oosa councillor Jess Glasgow made a mistake. No, he didn’t kill anyone, he didn’t rob anyone, he didn’t wear socks and sandals (criminal!). He made some inappropriate comments on The Bachelorette. For that, he has copped a savage public flogging and been asked to resign from a job he holds dear and is passionate about. But worse – his father and grandmother have suffered too. I interviewed him to find out his side of the story and what he was most upset about was the effect on his family.

Jess issued an apology and that should be the end of it. But he has received death threats and thousands of abusive messages from TV viewers out for blood. It’s an indictment on Australian society and far worse than anything Jess did. The reality behind reality TV is not pretty. Turn to page eight to read the story.

Also this week, Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane was granted an exclusive interview with Bec Hewitt who was on the Coast recently. They caught up when Bec was in Buderim filming a new TV series, Time & Place. Read why this was the show that attracted Bec back to acting on page 18.

Jenna Sanders is the owner of Kenilworth Country Bakery, home of the famous onekilogram donut. This single mother of two boys took her small country bakery to worldwide fame when a customer asked her to bake a giant donut for her son’s birthday. She shared it on social media and received 3.5 million views in less than 24 hours. When she launched her business she had four employees. Today she has 30, with three full-time bakers, two part-time pastry chefs and an apprentice baker. Not bad for a small country town bakery.

Your greatest regret? Coasting for way too long, just living each day as if I have a million more, just working nine to five with no passion or zest for life.

Let’s get real Reality TV can be a guilty pleasure, but it also has a dark side. When a ‘villain’ is cast, the consequences are far-reaching and can hurt not only them, but their families. Just ask Noosa councillor Jess Glasgow.

A

fter his appearance on reality TV show The Bachelorette, Noosa councillor Jess Glasgow received 98,000 messages on Instagram, ranging from hostile to outright murderous.

After he departed the show in October, it appeared the entire country wanted to crucify him for what many TV viewers saw as sexist and misogynistic behaviour towards the show’s leading lady, Sunshine Coast personality Angie Kent, as well as female crew members.

To preserve his sanity, he decided to quit social media altogether. Friends who monitor his social media accounts have told him about one in 10 of those 98,000 messages have been supportive, but the rest are messages of pure vitriol. That’s a lot of hatred directed towards one man.

“I’ve had death threats, someone said, ‘you’re an insult to pigs’, someone said, ‘you should end up as dog food’. I got an email from someone saying, ‘you’re a cyclist you pig, I’m going to run you over if I see you on the road’. This is really serious stuff.

“I agree my actions weren’t exactly acceptable and I take responsibility for my actions, but I really just want to move on and have my life back. I started to question my whole existence and ask myself, what have I done? I have to see a psychologist every week and Channel Ten and the producers, Warner Brothers, have doctors

and psychologists ringing me all the time.”

Mr Glasgow says he’s holding it together but it’s not himself he’s worried about, it’s his family. Raised in Tewantin by a single father after his mum left when he was a baby, he’s close to both his father and his grandmother.

“I’ve got family members who have some severe mental issues going on,” he says. “My dad is just a wreck. How do you think it feels for him? He’s one of those old-fashioned guys; you never seem him get emotional. It has brought him to tears. He’s been taking sleeping pills and he event contemplated taking his own life to take the heat off me.

“My grandma, she’s just so beautiful. I have the best relationship with her. My grandma goes to the bowls club and she’s getting hissed at, people saying ‘your grandson’s a pig’. She’s an 84-year-old woman for God’s sake. How defenceless could she be?”

Mr Glasgow also copped a public serve

by Noosa Mayor Tony Wellington, who demanded his resignation. He is now under investigation by the Office of the Independent Assessor for his conduct and the result of this investigation is due by mid-2020. In the meantime, Mr Glasgow has apologised for his behaviour and says even Ms Kent herself has jumped to his defence, telling Sydney radio presenters Kyle Sandilands and Jackie O he should not lose his job and she “can’t stand” the way the nation has attacked him.

Mr Glasgow says he had never watched the show nor considered finding love on a reality TV show until producers found him through Instagram and contacted him.

“I went on this program with the best intentions,” he says. ““I know in my heart that I didn’t mean anything derogatory and I have a lot of respect for Angie. I went on there for love. It was nothing like I expected. Honestly, I was a bit naive. I went on the show and genuinely thought there was an opportunity for love there.

“Looking back at it now, they certainly

didn’t get me on the show for my looks. All the men on that show were very handsome, good-looking guys. I’m guessing they picked me because of my role as a local councillor and they thought if they baited me the right way, it would blow up in Australian media, which it did.”

Mr Glasgow claims the producers

instructed him to be flirtatious and jovial, which he agrees he took too far.

“They pinpointed me and said ‘you’re a Coast guy, she’s a Coast girl, she wants to see your animalistic side’. Angie’s all about not taking herself seriously.

“There was a very playful attitude. I kind of just wanted to be a regular guy, I just wanted to walk on and introduce myself, but they bait you. They manipulate, they control.

It’s very contrived to make drama and no one’s mental state is worth that. The truth needs to be told. It’s toxic and manipulative and it doesn’t just ruin the candidate’s life, it ruins lives around them too.”

Australian actress Pia Miranda was also tried in the court of public opinion when she took home $500,000 in prize money from Australian Survivor this year. The reason? She voted show favourite Luke Toki – a father with two sons on the autism spectrum and a baby daughter with cystic fibrosis – off the island and went on to win.

She copped a wave of criticism and was called ‘Australia’s most hated woman’ for doing what’s expected on the show and playing tough – the show is called Survivor, after all. But in the world of reality TV, all is not fair in love and war.

It’s a subject Dr Karen Brooks addressed in her piece, Reality TV and Meanness, published in The Courier Mail. Dr Brooks is an author, columnist and academic who has myweeklypreview.com.au

FEATURE STORY studied popular culture using a psychoanalytical model. She is an Honorary Research Consultant in the Centre for Critical and Cultural Studies at the University of Queensland and an Honorary Senior Fellow at the University of the Sunshine Coast.

“Commercial reality TV relies on bringing out the worst traits of human nature and presenting it as entertainment,” says Dr Brooks. “Colin Vickery, who writes a lot for TV, said it’s bad for the soul. It’s not just about TV. It draws the public in by encouraging social media participation. It’s bad for the Australian psyche and it does normalise traits like bullying, aggression, cattiness, bitchiness, boastfulness, arrogance, deceit. It encourages schadenfreude, which is taking pleasure from other people’s pain.

“I hate tarring all reality TV with the same brush because there are quality reality TV shows like Gogglebox, The Great Australian Bakeoff and some of the estate shows like Love It or List It, but commercial reality TV is incredibly toxic for everyone, even the producers. They put their own careers above the health of other people. The producers will whisper in a contestant’s ear, they set up situations, they take people to the precipice and they watch them fall. Every single contestant talks about that.”

While Dr Books says producers have a duty of care to all contestants, even the ‘bullies’ and ‘villains’, the onus is on contestants to behave appropriately.

“Jess had a very high risk profile and he came in with a target on his back. He did say things that were very inappropriate and people read him in a particularly negative way. He became a symbol of how not to behave, but they forget he’s a human being.

They treated him as a caricature rather than a real human with feelings who made stupid mistakes.

“I agree he shouldn’t have to quit his job.

What he needs to do now through his job is prove that was an aberration. What people are doing to his dad and grandma, that’s far worse than what he did.

“It has been a horrendous fallout and it’s wrong. I don’t understand the pile-on. God forbid any of us should do things wrong and

have stones thrown at us. In some ways, reality TV shows are morality plays. We invest in them to see how not to behave as much as how to behave. We champion some, dislike others. We seem to invest so passionately and heavily and social media takes it further.

“That’s why I see it as bad for the psyche.

That’s why the producers have a duty of care – it has this ripple effect. What we’re lacking is kindness. We underrate kindness; we see it as a weakness but it’s a source of strength.

her shtick and she handled it really well.”

A fact we need to keep in mind when there’s a scandal on a reality TV show that blows up across the media, is that it’s a relatively small percentage of the population watching. Scandals are good for ratings and according to Dr Brooks, the

reality shows need all the help they can get.

“The ratings for these shows are declining,” says Dr Brooks. “That’s why they amp up the drama. Survivor is an exception.

That’s why they do the promos saying so and so is lying, so and so is bullying. People are tiring of the negativity.

“It’s a minority of people who watch these shows. The Bachelorette has a dedicated audience and a very loud audience. When you see people piling on with [online] hatred, it’s because there’s no consequences. They’re not saying it directly to the person’s face. It makes cowardly people brave in that cyber moment, but if they had to see the psychological and emotional consequences of that hatred, it would be a different story.

“Jess has had 98,0000 messages but hey, we’re a population of 20-plus million. I like to believe most of us are decent and we won’t engage at that level. We do mistake the minority as the collective mind – they’re not.

Most of us are rational and reasonable and think it’s ridiculous, it’s overkill. It’s just crazy.

The shows are about people’s hearts and not just the hearts of the people on the shows. If you don’t like a show, vote with your remote.”

As the trolls and online haters gradually forget Mr Glasgow and move onto their next target, he’s waiting for the dust to settle and getting on with the job of working for the people of Noosa.

“I’m still the same person I was when I was elected three and a half years ago,” he says. “My number one priority is still here in Noosa. I don’t believe anything they write is true and I have had messages of support from Noosa councillors, federal politicians, women and men. I’m still in contact with the 19 guys from the show and I had lunch with Jamie [Doran] last week.

“I don’t think any female in the southern hemisphere would want to be touching me right now, but I’m open to a relationship. I’m 37 and I have a great life, living in Noosa where I grew up. I have so much love and attention to give to one person. This whole thing just blew up like a storm.”

My Weekly Preview reached out to Channel Ten for comment, but the network had not responded at the time of print.

For a fictionalised look at what goes on behind the scenes of reality TV shows, check out the US TV show Unreal, now in its fourth and final season. Premiering in 2015, it’s about the making of a reality TV series not unlike The Bachelor, called Everlasting. The plot follows a young producer, Rachel Goldman, who is pressured by her executive producer, Quinn King, to manipulate the show’s contestants in order to produce continual conflict and drama and increase ratings.

Any semblance of morality and integrity is left behind as they edit contestants’ conversations out of context, conceal knowledge of a contestant’s father’s heart attack, dig up painful childhood trauma to try and to squeeze out a few tears and pit one contestant against another with deliberate lies and deceit. Unreal may be a fictional show, but it’s not far from the truth.

The show’s creator, Sarah Gertrude Shapiro, based it on her own experience as a former Bachelor producer and many former Bachelor contestants and crew members have admitted Unreal is disturbingly accurate. Four National Rugby League heavyweights will do battle on the Sunshine Coast next year after the NRL released its 2020 premiership season draw. The Cronulla Sharks will tackle the North Queensland Cowboys under the new lights at Sunshine Coast Stadium in Round 10 of the NRL season on May 16 at 5.30pm. This will be followed up with the South Sydney Rabbitohs playing the New Zealand Warriors in Round 22 on August 15 at 3pm.

Mayor Mark Jamieson says the Coast will be the only regional destination in Australia to host two NRL clubs in the one season next year. Ticketing information for both matches will be available soon.

Members of Girl Torque donated close to $21,000 to Bloomhill Cancer Care after raising the phenomenal amount through their annual Bras and Bikes event last month. Girl Torque president Judy Carroll says just under 500 riders attended the 18th annual ride. “Going back 18 years ago it was considered very risque for the girls to wear a pink bra on the outside of their shirts, but these days the dressing up has become such a huge fun aspect of the entire day,” she says. “This gradually escalated to decorating the bikes as well and now we find it very hard indeed to pick a winning bike for best dressed as everyone goes to such great lengths to ‘pink up’ their ride.”

Construction has started on a $5.5 million building at the University of the Sunshine Coast that is set to inspire the study of Creative Industries and enliven the campus. The building will have an internal performance area for an audience of 80, plus a stage that opens out to a lawn and the USC Art Gallery piazza. It will feature professional-quality recording and video studios, a black box theatre production space, and Queensland’s first MIT Fab Lab Maker Space. All areas of the building will be connected by a high-end audio-over-IP system that will enable recording of high-fidelity, broadcast-quality audio from any part of the building, making it suitable for professionally recording acts as small as a solo artist or as large as an orchestra. It’s on track to open in March.

A BEAUTIFUL BOOK TO SAY GOODBYE After the devastating loss of two pregnancies, Rachael Tickner poured her heart into creating a beautiful gift book to help others who have gone through the same experience. WORDS: Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane.

’m sorry, there’s no heartbeat.”

They are the devastating words no parentto-be wants to hear. Just like that, Rachael and Brenton Tickner’s little Chickpea was gone.

It was an indescribable pain the couple experienced twice on their journey to becoming parents.

The emotional and physical turmoil of losing two ‘flutterby babies’ is what inspired Mrs Tickner to pour her heart into her recently-released gift book, Flutterby Baby, Forever in Our Hearts.

Now a mother to Ollie, four, and Oscar, two, Mrs Tickner lost Chickpea and Chestnut in the space of five months between 2013 and 2014.

Chickpea was lost to a miscarriage and Chestnut was lost through a ruptured ectopic pregnancy.

“This December will mark six years since we lost our first boy.

“When it happened, I was in quite a bad place and didn’t know how to handle the situation. Especially because he was an early miscarriage, I know there are so many women, one in four in fact, who have lost babies much further along their pregnancy journey and I felt like my pain and grief would pale in comparison,” Mrs Tickner says.

“We found out on November 13, 2013 that we were expecting and had seen our baby’s heartbeat on our first dating scan. We were overjoyed.

“Then to go from a healthy dating scan to the specialist finding no heartbeat at our nine-week scan, it was just devastating. When they saw the size of Chickpea, we found out he had stopped growing just three days after our first scan.

“Where you think of miscarriage, often you would have bleeding or pain or something like that, but I had none of that. But the emotional pain began as soon as we heard those words on December 13 that year.

“The hardest part about our first loss is that they couldn’t tell us what had happened. We had no reason.

Even if they’d have said our little one was missing a chromosome, it would still have been devastating but

found that Chestnut had not made it all the way to the womb.

After losing two babies, Mrs Tickner says she was hyper-aware of everything that was going on throughout both of the pregnancies that led to her happy and healthy boys, meaning she wasn’t able to enjoy the pregnancies at all. She also experienced hypertension and gestational diabetes, which heightened her anxiety about getting her pregnancies to full term.

Mrs Tickner says she didn’t seek any help for her mental health until she was pregnant with Oscar.

“If I could tell myself now what I should’ve then, it would be to not be afraid to get help sooner,” she says.

“The hospital was great with physical things, but from a psychological perspective hospitals can definitely improve on that. My advice to anyone going through it is don’t be afraid to talk to friends or family, someone you can trust. It helps you to get through it.”

It is for that reason she has partnered with The Pink Elephants Support Network and $5 from every book sold will go to the charity to help it to support women and their partners grieving the loss of their baby or pregnancy loss.

Network co-founder and director Sam Payne says Mrs Tickner’s 52-page gift book will be a great resource for many women and their partners.

The book has been beautifully illustrated with watercolour paintings by Joanna Osborne, graphic design by Tanya Heath and gorgeous calligraphy by Charlotte Chan. it may have made it easier to understand why the pregnancy wasn’t progressing.”

Mrs Tickner found out on May 3 the following year that Chestnut was on the way, although it was too early to tell the gender of this bub.

Just three weeks later, after experiencing pain and bleeding, Mrs Tickner underwent an operation to remove her right ovary and fallopian tube after it was

he women’s magazines have been going into hyper drive with speculation over which television series has drawn Bec Hewitt back to the small screen – and their guesses have been wrong!

In an exclusive interview with My Weekly Preview, the actress – who played Hayley Lawson on Home and Away

from 1998 to 2005 – reveals it is a Sunshine Cost television series that has inspired her to return to acting.

Ms Hewitt, who is married to former tennis champion Lleyton Hewitt, says being a mother to her three children Mia, 14, Cruz, 11, and Ava, nine, and recently taking on a presenting role on Channel Nine’s travel show Hello World has been well

and truly keeping her busy. But when she met Time & Place’s writer and director Tam Sainsbury and read the script for the series, she knew she had found the role she was waiting for.

Speaking to My Weekly Preview while in Buderim to shoot scenes for the yet-to-be-released series, Ms Hewitt says the cast of familiar names – including Heartbreak High star Lara Cox, former Home and Away stars Bree Desborough, Guy Edmonds and Conrad Coleby, Australian Film Institute and Logie Award winner Tracy Mann, and Glitch and Mystery Road actor Aaron McGrath – all were great drawcards for her to sign on for Time & Place.

“I wasn’t searching for anything when this role came up. To me it has to be something worth the time away from my kids. I loved the story and cast instantly and the moment I read the script, I knew this was the right job for me.”

After leaving Home and Away 14 years ago, Ms Hewitt says she experienced a real “pinch-me moment” when she arrived on set to film at Malumba Estate in Buderim.

“I woke up that morning with an extra spring in my step to be on the set of a TV show again, seeing all of the cast and crew buzzing about on the set,” she says.

Ms Hewitt joined a small selection of lead characters to shoot several scenes at Malumba Estate to present to television networks. Ms Sainsbury and the producers will also use the scenes at the Screen Forever conference in Melbourne next week to pitch directly to national, international commercial and streaming networks. She is one of only 10 Australian directors and two Queensland directors selected by the Australian Directors Guild to attend this prestigious conference as part of a directors delegation.

Ms Sainsbury says it is almost surreal to see how Time & Place has evolved since she first started writing the script four years ago. “About 16 months ago, we shot six episodes as a web series here on the Sunshine Coast. I chose the web format because it is obviously much easier to screen something via the web rather than television,” she says.

“Screen Australia came on board as principal production investor and along with Screen Queensland, both funding bodies urged me to look at transforming Time & Place into a TV series. As we originally shot for the web, production values were lower than for television so that producers decided we would reshoot some scenes with higher production values to take to the networks.

“I honestly believe we will have a long-running series on the Sunshine Coast, which will be incredible for job creation, growing the local film and television industry, as well as for tourism. Time & Place could do for the Sunshine Coast what Home and Away has done for Palm Beach.”

The next incarnation of Time & Place has evolved to include six new characters and a slightly altered plotline to accommodate them. Ms Sainsbury says she has also recast some of the original characters and says the cast is now rock-solid.

“One of the drawcards for such a high calibre of talent was the location we will be shooting in – they are all very happy to come to the Sunshine Coast to be able to go to the beach and stay in a beautiful part of Australia while filming,” she says.

“During the weekend shoot, the actors all felt the hospitality of what it will be like to work here for a long period during the series shoot. We had incredible sets, catering from Aimee Provence and DeliFish and accommodation in the gorgeous Aquila Retreat. They definitely felt the Sunshine Coast love.”

Ms Sainsbury and Ms Cox, who plays the lead character of Rebecca Woodruff in Time & Place, first connected more than a decade ago, when Ms Cox starred in a feature film created by Ms Sainsbury that was also filmed on the Coast.

“I like my character, I love the family unit; it’s loving and quirky and fun and she’s a good character to play. There’s a lot of carrying some heavy burdens and a few secrets, but in all, she’s trying to do the right thing. I can’t wait to see how Tam writes future episodes. If I could do this every day, I would be in heaven,” Ms Cox says.

Like Ms Hewitt, Ms Cox is selective of the shows she works on as she is now a busy mother of two. But when she got the call-up from Ms Sainsbury, she was all in.

Heading back home to tennis practice, dance competitions and end-of-year Christmas parties for the children, Ms Hewitt says she is excited to see where the series goes.

“I love a bit of drama and I think the characters in Time & Place are strong. Tam’s created a great script.”

An Eat Pray Love adventure in Ubud Bali offers more than shopping, beaches and partying. It’s a deeply spiritual place that delivers much to the seeker. WORDS: Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane.

I

sat down in front of an elderly Balinese man. While he was small of stature, he had a presence that enveloped me. This was Cokorda ‘Cok’ Rai, a 96-year-old shaman and the grandson of the last King of Ubud. I smiled as I sat down, wanting to project an air of confidence despite feeling nervous as heck about what this renowned healer would pick up about my energy and health.

Many people travel to Bali for cheap shopping, cocktails on the beach and a chance to relax. My purpose for visiting this Indonesian country for the first time was very different. I was on an Eat Pray Love-type quest and it had brought me from the beautiful high-end beach community of Seminyak out into the tropical surrounds of Ubud.

Just like Elizabeth Gilbert, the author of the aforementioned international bestseller, I had found myself on a spiritual day tour, where myself and a small group of friends would be taken to meet the famed Cok Rai

(pronounced ‘chock rai’) before being whisked to Tirta Empul, the Balinese Water Temple, to cleanse our spirits in the fountains. We would then be meeting with one of the many palm readers in Ubud.

It sounded like fun. I underestimated the power of what was about to unfold.

Here I was, inside Cok Rai’s stunning compound where he lived with his extended family as all Balinese do. There were intricate temples for their daily worship and we were allowed to explore at will. But I was pulled straight to the small, thatched-roof hut where he sat, quietly powerful, in a wooden chair.

We each took it in turns to approach the shaman, some with concerns and others, like myself, simply curious to see what he would be able to pick up without me uttering a word. He saw right through my smile, by the way. Simply stating, “You are very happy, you laugh a lot, but there is also great sadness.”

So, he set about curing my worry and my sadness, promptly pinching one of the toes on my left foot, causing excruciating pain to shoot up my left leg. “This is where your pain and worry sits,” he explained, before performing some energy healing. When he pinched the same spot again, I felt nothing.

This cynic had been converted. Now, I was open and willing to take on Tirta Empul, with the firm belief that I could truly make a mental shift that day.

The temple was a hive of activity. Our tour guide explained it is where all of the locals go before weddings, major celebrations and after farewelling loved ones in funerals. We went through the tradition of donning a sarong to cover our swimsuits and were directed in the correct process of being blessed at the fountains.

We moved through a series of six fountains, performing the same ritual at each one, before moving onto a second set of fountains, which were dedicated to removing curses, curing nightmares and having the opportunity to say a prayer or make a wish for something to come true.

The spring water that feeds the fountains emerges through the volcanic soil just metres from where it cascades out of the mouths of the Balinese sculptures and into the pools.

Feeling refreshed, and a little chilled

fill up my spiritual cup with all of the things I desired.

It’s true I felt more at peace that day than I had in a long time and gained a new respect for spiritual practice and how it governs the way of life for the Balinese, something I would never have been able to comprehend if I’d remained beachside in Seminyak simply taking in stunning sunsets and bargaining with vendors for gifts to take home.

This is a side of Bali I have truly fallen in love with.

IF YOU GO: Restaurants overlooking the rice paddies in Ubud are stunning from standing in the icy cool waters of the pools, we changed and went off to Puri Pandawa to meet a husband and wife team for our palm reading. Everything inside their compound was spectacularly purple.

We each took it in turns to have our reading, which was done the traditional way.

The wife was the reader, carefully examining my palm and channelling her thoughts as they came. The husband was my translator, letting me know in English what she could tell from my palm and what she was predicting for my future.

This felt a little less impactful given the intensity of my previous two experiences that day, but it was interesting, nonetheless, to see that some of what I was being told here had also been mentioned by Cok Rai just hours earlier, on the opposite side of Ubud.

As we were being driven back to our mountainside villa surrounded by rainforest, I had the perfect setting to reflect on everything that had just transpired. Our driver said I had an opportunity to wash my slate clean that day and could now begin to

Construction – drier weather reduces delays A longer run of dry weather will allow construction companies to complete projects faster, or on time, and within budget, benefiting companies like Lendlease.

D

rought has long been a characteristic of the Australian landscape, but the current arid weather is taking a particularly onerous toll with little relief in sight.

Lower-than-average rainfall is apparent across a wide swathe of the country. In turn, areas in drought – deemed as having rainfall in the lowest 10 per cent band on record for three months or more – now cover most of New South Wales and South Australia, along with parts of Queensland and Western Australia.

Drier-than-average conditions are forecast to continue until December, with a less than 30 per cent chance that most of the mainland will exceed the median rainfall. Even if conditions ease in early 2020,

several months of above-average rainfall are required to end the challenging conditions.

We estimate the drought has added 0.4 percentage points to food inflation and presented a 0.15 to 0.20 per cent headwind to economic growth.

In our view, below-average rainfall presents downside risks for agriculture (lower livestock or crop yields), banks (higher loan impairments), fertiliser producers (less demand for crop protection or fertilisers) and some transport companies (lower grain and livestock volumes).

On the other hand, the lack of rainfall is supportive, or even beneficial for some industries, such as for construction activity, general insurers and supermarkets.

General insurance – lower claims Insurance Australia Group, QBE Insurance and Suncorp could see an improvement in margins as reduced rainfall results in lower motor accident rates. Furthermore, flooding tends to be more costly for insurers, so the reduced chances of floods could see below-budget catastrophe costs.

Supermarkets – food inflation Food inflation, which drives sales revenue and margin expansion, is likely to be more meaningful for Woolworths and Coles revenues, as fresh food (fruit, vegetables and meat), represents roughly 20 per cent of their supermarket sales versus five per cent at Metcash.

WHAT A TIME TO WINE AND DINE The restaurant scene on the Sunshine Coast has evolved from humble beginnings in the 1960s, and by the 1970s and ’80s locals were spoilt for choice with plenty of fine-dining options and our fair share of colourful characters. WORDS: Dot Whittington.

T

he 1970s was a feast for fine dining on the Sunshine Coast, as it moved from a staple of fish and chips at the beginning of the decade to filet mignon at its close. And by the 1980s, the restaurant business was really cooking.

The title of the “first quality restaurant” must go to the Boolarong, which the enigmatic Englishwoman Betsan Coats opened in 1957.

It stood alone during the 1960s as an exotic and sophisticated restaurant-motel, “a delightfully decorated, gay place”.

At the beginning of the 1970s, choices for dining out were limited, even though people were invited to “breakaway” in their new Torana.

Local “where to eat” listings suggested Caprice on the Esplanade at Mooloolaba, which specialised in seafood, and Cotton Tree Inn’s Nautilus Room for a-la-carte lunch and dinner during the week and “a fabulous smorgasbord” on Sundays.

Audine’s Restaurant in Bulcock Street, Caloundra, had an a-la-carte menu until 9pm, and the offer to bring your favourite wines and not pay corkage.

Nettleton’s Restaurant on Buderim Mountain suggested trying “vintage wines from our renowned cellar” and menus “arranged to suit your requirements”.

Bryan’s Bistro opened below Hayne and Perren Pharmacy in Currie Street, Nambour, in March 1970, promising the “finest a la carte menu on the Sunshine Coast” with “soft lighting, sweet music and smooth decor”.

It advertised that “for the connoisseur it’s a delight to ponder upon” and the

Local guides helped residents settle on a place to eat gourmet needed to go no further.

These were the times when Thai and Indian were unheard of and even Italian cuisine was still in the future.

Menus were typically prawn cocktails, carpetbag steak and surf’n’turf accompanied

by Liebfraumilch Blue Nun hock, NuitsSaint-Georges Burgundy, Melini Chianti and Mateus Rose, followed by Vandermint, Sabra and Pasha liqueurs.

When the 11-storey Maroochy Sands opened as the Coast’s first high-rise in 1971, the ground floor became a large Chinese restaurant. Peter Sun catered for large groups and with live music, the place was always packed.

The problem had been the Queensland liquor laws, which had restricted licences for restaurants to just two establishments a year, but once relaxed, the revolution began, with the late John Douglas, ‘JD’, leading the charge. He introduced the Coast to fine

dining and dominated the restaurant scene for decades.

Aged 77 when he died in August, Mr Douglas was tall and lean, and known for a characteristic cough and the small towel draped over his shoulder as he kept watch over the patrons who consistently packed his restaurants – Fronds, Smuggler’s Cove, Checkers, Charades, Hernando’s Hideaway, the Galleon. One after another he took the restaurant scene to new heights.

Alfie’s Restaurant on Aerodrome Road moved it up a notch when it offered sorbet to cleanse the palate between courses.

In 1977, Yule Rust, an ex-Navy American who had been living in New Mexico, arrived at Sixth Avenue, Cotton Tree and opened what was to become an institution.

Rusty’s Mexican Restaurant was so popular among locals that Rusty would close over the lucrative Christmas period and take his holidays like his clientele, saying he

wasn’t there for the tourist trade.

Furnishings were rudimentary yet authentic, the menu never changed – neither did the staff – and patrons would line up to get in, year in and year out for at least 25 years.

Although the original diners arrived to a haze of smoke, Rusty’s would become the first restaurant on the Sunshine Coast to ban smoking. (One regular recalls the night Rusty invited a group to stay on for a tequila on the house, then later said he was off and to shut the door on their way out.)

In early 1979, the first, and only, floating restaurant opened on the Maroochy River near Chambers Island. A former dredge mounted on a barge that had pumped sand from the river until 1975, was converted into a seafood restaurant and opened as the Barge-Inn River Restaurant.

The name was changed to the Rusty Pelican and then operated as the Pelican Queen until 1986 when it was destroyed by fire. It was never rebuilt.

Pisces Seafood Restaurant at Alexandra Headland, Signatures on the riverfront near Cornmeal Creek and the Coral Restaurant in the Rolling Surf motel at Kings Beach entered the market and tempted the crowds.

Now, half a century later, the Sunshine Coast has too many restaurants to mention.

STUDENTS ON SHOW TAFE Queensland’s Mooloolaba campus will come alive in a kaleidoscope of colour, concepts and creativity on Friday, November 22 when it hosts its inaugural CRE8 festival.

Students from eight creative study areas will take centre stage at the event, showcasing their incredible work between 6pm and 9pm in a range of inspiring displays, including galleries, pop-up shops, performances and a fashion parade.

In addition to admiring students’ work, the public and local industry will be able to enjoy the festival environment of CRE8, with a variety of installations, entertainers and food trucks present to ensure a night of fun for all.

The event will provide photography, graphic design, visual arts, fashion, music, hair, beauty, and screen and media students with the opportunity to exhibit the amazing work they have created using the skills they’ve developed throughout their courses.

TAFE Queensland Diploma of Visual Arts student Julie Field is one such student – the 47-year-old’s artworks are among those on display and for sale at CRE8.

Ms Field will showcase a collection of 12 equine-inspired 2D and 3D pieces on the night, including charcoal drawings, an oil

painting and ceramic sculptures. She says that while this won’t be her first exhibition, she is excited to be involved.

“Not only is this a great opportunity to showcase our work and receive feedback, but it will also give the public the chance to support local artistic talent and hopefully encourage others to follow their own creative journey,” Ms Field says.

The Eumundi resident has had a passion for visual art since she was at school, but decided to pursue a more conventional career path in business. She never lost her creativity though, and in 2017 she enrolled in a Certificate III in Visual Arts with the goal of honing her skills and becoming a full-time artist.

She has been working at the Cooroy Butter Factory Arts Centre and was named a finalist in the Du Rietz Art Prize at the Gympie Regional Gallery and also at the Taste of Art exhibition at Noosa Regional Gallery.

Ms Field says she is looking forward to CRE8, which is proudly supported by My Weekly Preview, and the opportunity it presents for her to once more showcase her work and connect with like-minded creatives.

FRIENDSHIP IN THE DIGITAL AGE The digital world keeps us connected like never before, but the human desire to find meaningful real-life friendships is far from dead. WORDS: Lorraine Page.

T

he Beatles released Eleanor Rigby, a melodically catchy but lyrically bleak song, in 1966. Poetic in form, it was often described as a lament for the lonely.

In hindsight, it may have been an early indicator that social isolation can cut across all ages and levels of society. Five decades later, the UK has a Minister for Loneliness.

And a new survey on conviviality by wine and spirits company Pernod Ricard shows

more than 85 per cent of Australians believe friendliness contributes positively to their wellbeing. On the flipside, two-thirds of Australians think the world is less friendly than it was five years ago, and almost half feel relationships with their friends are becoming more superficial.

Pernod Ricard is extending a global invitation to make a new friend a day in a bold bid to encourage greater human connection.

Sociologist and expert on Australian culture, Neer Korn, says making a new friend every day is probably wishful thinking – the point being more about making the effort to go out, even if it’s a bit uncomfortable, and connecting with someone in real life.

“It’s such an obvious thing that we forget how to do it in modern society,” Mr Korn says.

Although the world is bursting with tech and social media for people to hide behind, there are obvious benefits that come with the

digital age. Meetup is a site that has millions of users globally, where you can find friends, share a hobby or network professionally.

“We need these groups and we need these connections,” Mr Korn says. “The problem we have in society is we’ve used the social media texting screen as an excuse to not have real-life interactions and that affects people because it’s a necessary human value.”

Most people, he says, find a special interest group through people they already know, which is a more natural way of making first-time connections with strangers.

When Facebook came on the scene it reminded body corporate manager Michelle, 59, of the days when she had a pen pal – except now she was able to write to hundreds of people at once.

She says the gloss of Facebook has since worn off for her and she’s noticing that users are not sharing as much information about themselves online as they did a few years ago.

“It has become more like a phone book in some ways,” Michelle says. “We can go into private messaging and say, ‘do you want to get together?’.”

Before her divorce five years ago after 20 years of marriage, she worked on building up her own social circle through real-life connections close to home. After her divorce, she switched between two online dating sites to meet like-minded singles.

She’s met her share of ring-ins but doesn’t blame the ease with which the digital world can be manipulated and hidden behind.

“With the first person I met online, I had this fairy-tale belief that we were going to stay together and everything was going to be marvellous,” Michelle says. “I was reading between the lines of things we were texting.”

She says there have been many times she’s met to have drinks with someone who didn’t look at all like the posted photo.

“When you meet people on a site oftentimes it doesn’t go past a first date. It’s

55 PLUS not that they’re not nice people, but you don’t get that spark,” she says. “When you get older, you’re harsher on your expectations.”

Kris, a health professional with many years of experience, works intensively with people every day and loves how social media has shrunk the world to more manageable proportions, connecting us in ways never thought possible.

“Rapid dissemination of information and communication allows us to feel less alone – we can find hundreds of sites, groups and pages about dealing with depression, parenting, studying, illness – anything!” she says. “In life we sift through people we meet, finding those with whom we have some commonalities and genuine rapport.

Equally, we do this on social media. We may have less information online to assess people or sometimes more.”

Kris says she doesn’t use social media as a substitute for real-life contact and if a friend has something major happen, she picks up the phone and meets up.

In real life she has met friends she made exclusively on Facebook, from interstate and overseas. She vetted them carefully over time and says she felt only a few moments of awkwardness on actual meeting.

“Through many messages, posts and photos I ascertained a reasonable idea and feel for the personality of these friends,” she says. “When I actually met, they were just as I thought they would be, and it sealed our genuine real friendship.”

The support of Kris’s online friends, including many of those she has actually met, was never more apparent than when her old dog died last year. She says she received more cards, flowers, gifts, phone calls and messages than she’d ever had in her life.

“I don’t think people are intrinsically different from hundreds of years ago – same emotions, hopes, and that very basic need for human interaction,” she says. “There are just

more of us and we communicate in different ways now.”

The Sunshine Coast Singles 60 and Over friendship group came into being when Maggie Taubman, 74, found herself living a lonely life despite one son and his family living only 30 minutes’ drive away.

“People retire up here and think they’re going to have the life of bliss, and there’s no friends,” Maggie says. “I used to be cleaning the silver on Saturday morning and I thought there’s got to be a better life than this.”

She eventually found the courage to host her own group on Meetup 18 months ago.

Once a month, 45 to 50 members, mostly women, have lunch at Coolum.

While social media has widened our possibilities for friendship, it may have muddied the definition of who exactly is a friend. “When you’re under 20 you want thousands of friends, and by the time you’re 30 you want just five good ones,” Mr Korn says. “When you experience a real-life connection with all its subtleties and facial expressions, that is an innate human response of warmth and connection that you can’t beat.”

SIGN ME UP Much has been written about the genteel art of writing letters and postcards being lost to the speed and convenience of electronic mail, but there’s another delightful old practice that has also disappeared – the autograph book.

A friend recently sent me the autograph book of his aunt, in which most entries were dated around 1930. This prompted me to dig out a couple of my own – my mother’s from the mid-1930s and mine from the mid-1960s.

What a pleasant reminder it was of another, more gracious era when, before assurances that technology would bring us more leisure, we actually found the time to write verses, draw pictures in ink and make a record in our own hand.

And now, 90 years later, these humble autograph books provide a delightful record to leaf through. I don’t expect anyone to get quite the same joy scrolling through my emails in 2109.

Ada, Myrtle, Edna, Maude, Rita, Vera and Nora wrote inspirational quotes, risqué verses, and wise words for the future: “Love all, trust a few and always paddle your own canoe”; and “Life is pleasant, greet it with a smile. Friends are treasures, keep them all the while”.

Edna was a bit cheekier with her 1930 entry: “A man is like a new chest with a lock and key to close, good to look on outside but within – God only knows” and Kitty in 1934: “Three in the parlour you can plainly see, the

lamp, the parlourmaid and he. Three’s company there’s no doubt, that’s the reason the lamp went out”.

By the time it got to the mid-1960s, signatures and greetings from celebrities had been added to the pages. Chips Rafferty, the La Balsa crew, the world yo-yo champion from Mexico, and a man who rode a penny farthing from London to Sydney (fortunately I had written this against a signature that means nothing at all) were among my collection, along with the TV personalities of the day – Tony Barber, Joy Chambers, Don Seccombe, Ron Cadee and other names from QTQ Nine.

They were among entries from primary school buddies (“Dorothy sitting on a fence a monkey on a rail, the only difference that there is, the monkey has a tail”) and teachers (“Wherever you are, whatever you be, stay as sweet as you were in my Grade Three”).

There was a standard collection: “I auto sing, I auto laugh but in this book I autograph”, “by hook or by crook I’ll be first/ last in this book”, as well as “by eggs and by bacon, I think you’re mistaken” in small print at the very edge of the very last page.

And of course, the many and various versions of “roses are red, violets are blue”.

Copybook handwriting, sketches, a polite tone, eloquence and optimism are hallmarks of the autograph book. “Think of me when you are lonely, Keep for me a little spot; And in the garden of your memory, Plant a Forget-Me-Not”.

But the last word goes to Nora, who in 1933, wrote, “When your days on earth are ended, and your pathways here are trod, may your name in gold be written in the autograph of God.”

Lifestyle can reduce dementia risk In good news for those of us worried about the risk of dementia, a recent study by UK researchers has shown a healthy lifestyle could help offset a genetic risk of the disease.

The study found that for people who had a high genetic probability of developing dementia, the risk was a third lower in those who led a healthy lifestyle.

While none of us can be certain what the future holds, we all want to have some control over our quality of life. Loss of capacity, whether through dementia or some other illness or accident, is a frightening scenario to contemplate.

Having a financial plan in place is a helpful guide to family members if things go wrong.

Having a documented financial plan, as well as legal documents, like a Will and Enduring Power of Attorney, can make it easier for loved ones to act on your behalf, should the need arise.

Therefore, effective and accessible treatments are available for what was once treated with a bleak outlook. Ultimately, the best treatment is still prevention.

DENTURES

Implant retained dentures In my clinic I see many patients who present with dentures that have lost stability due to bone loss, especially on the lower ridge. These patients are especially prone to sore spots and they experience difficulty with chewing food effectively as the denture moves in and out of position easily. Relines and soft liners only offer limited success.

In these cases, implants can restore much-needed stability to maintain good function and improve mastication.

Your dental prosthetist will refer you to a dentist or specialist to be assessed for implant treatment.

Once treatment has been approved, a minimum of two implants are placed in the bone on the lower ridge. These are allowed to heal for three to four months. The implants are then exposed and healing caps placed. After a week, the locator abutments are screwed into position and your dental prosthetist will fit the housings that are fixed into the denture.

Different plastic inserts can be inserted to reduce or increase retention of the denture.

The denture can easily be removed for cleaning and maintenance.

As we age, maintaining overall health including strength, mobility, agility and general wellbeing is an essential to enjoying independent living. However, often as we get older these components of health tend to deteriorate if not actively addressed.

The Pilates Method can be used to improve strength, balance and endurance, to aid in injury prevention and rehabilitation, correct muscular imbalances and increase emotional wellbeing.

THE REAL COST OF A HOME Property markets around the nation face problems with affordability, but there are affordable options in our region. Words: Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane.

ousing affordability. It’s a topic that can lead to some rather healthy debate around the barbie or the dinner table.

Everyone’s got an opinion on what constitutes affordability, but one thing’s for

certain – with record-low interest rates, every Australian is in a better position to become homeowners or first-time investors.

When cash in the bank is no longer viable and vacancy rates across the Sunshine Coast region remain tight, it is no wonder

that the real estate market is remaining steady.

The HIA’s chief economist, Tim Reardon, says interest rate cuts have “more than offset the rise in home prices to ensure an ongoing improvement in housing affordability”.

This comes after the HIA’s Affordability Index – which is calculated for each of the eight capital cities and regional areas on a quarterly basis – found that all of the eight capital cities experienced improved affordability over the year to September 2019 The Index takes into account the latest dwelling prices, mortgage interest rates and wage developments and found that Brisbane, our closest capital, was seven per

cent more affordable. Perth took out the greatest improvement in affordability, with its index up 15.3 per cent, whereas Canberra languished on just a 1.4 per cent improvement.

“Australians are still a nation that aspires to own a home. Over 90 per cent of renters want to own their own home, partly due to the financial stability it provides in retirement,” Mr Reardon says.

“With little opportunity for interest rates to be reduced further, improvements in affordability will require the right economic conditions with a strong volume of new homes, low interest rates and supportive policy settings from state and federal governments.

“Up to 50 per cent of the cost of a house and land package can be red tape and taxes.

Reducing the tax on homes and ensuring an adequate supply of homes is an ongoing challenge for governments.”

Michael Matusik of Matusik Property Insights, who has been providing housing market and residential project advice for about 30 years, says the ratio of mortgage debt to household income has jumped to a record high of more than 140 per cent according to the Reserve Bank.

“The RBA also says that total household debt to household income is now over 210 per cent,” he adds.

HIA’s chief economist, Tim Reardon Mr Matusik uses the median house prices from CoreLogic and compares that to the median household income of dwellings in each capital city as provided by the Australian Bureau of Statistics. He estimates an affordable house price is set at 5.5 times the average household income.

“However, such results on a decadebased time line would suggest that the average Australian with a 25-year standard variable P+I [principal and interest] mortgage has been paying, during the 2010s, in real terms, around 35 per cent of their household income in repayments,” he says.

This is compared to just seven per cent in the 1960s and according to Mr Matusik’s figures, it has been creeping up each decade.

But he is quick to point out that housing affordability has improved over the past 12 months.

“Declining or stagnate prices and lower interest rates will do that,” he says.

Closer to home, the Sunshine Coast continues to be an affordable property destination when compared with the nation’s capital cities.

In fact, there are still many pockets of affordable land across the region that are priced below $300,000, making them accessible to any demographic of homebuyer from the first-timers right through to the retirees.

AVID Property Group’s Harmony is one of the greenfield sites in the region that is providing a host of opportunities for people to secure their slice of Sunshine Coast living while getting the most for their money.

AVID Property Group general manager Bruce Harper says the region is quite diverse and as such, there is a need to provide a range of affordable housing options.

“The vast majority of land at Harmony is priced well below $300,000, with the average block of land around $250,000 and even less for smaller blocks. Only a few very large blocks exceed the $300,000 price. However, upward pressure on land prices will mean that in a couple of years this will likely not be the case,” he says.

Michael Matusik beyond the white picket fence when it comes to buying a home and are seeking more affordable options with less maintenance attached.

In masterplanned communities like Harmony, residents can make the most of being in a well-connected community with easy access to services and recreation spaces, so they don’t have to build or purchase larger homes.

“Buyers nowadays live, entertain and play in a much different way than they have in earlier generations,” Mr Harper says.

“Large blocks of land with significant outdoor space require substantial time commitments to maintain and are much less compatible with today’s lifestyle – so

housing needs to adapt to accommodate this. From what I have seen, the lowmaintenance lifestyle trend on the Coast is relatively recent compared to other states.

“I expect we will see an emerging trend of a higher percentage of two-storey homes on these smaller lots, as people seek to maximise their land as much as possible.”

evelopment of the Maroochydore CBD has reached a new milestone with the first crane operating on site at the $30-million Evans Long commercial building Foundation Place.

The cutting-edge office tower is the first

building to come out of the ground in the 53-hectare greenfield site and is on track for completion by late 2020.

Evans Long director, Matthew Evans, says developers love to see cranes on the skyline because they’re tangible signs of a robust economy.

“Foundation Place is really setting the tone for the Maroochydore CBD — this is the first crane for the first building in a precinct which is going to revolutionise the Sunshine Coast in so many ways,” Mr Evans says.

“The CBD will have an enormous impact on this region’s economic future and we’re really excited to be a part of the journey from the very start.

“Those tenants who have already committed to space in Foundation Place will see the benefit of getting in early and securing offices in what will soon become the heart of the Sunshine Coast business community.”

The building, which was already 50 per cent leased, has attracted a number of tenants including businesses working in the legal, finance and construction industries.

SunCentral CEO John Knaggs says the crane and construction work on site are further signs of confidence in the new city centre.

“The Evans Long team should be commended for their foresight in the development of Foundation Place, everything from the design through to its eco-credentials ensures it will be a landmark building which sets the tone for other developments within the new city centre,” Mr Knaggs says.

Maroochydore Chamber of Commerce President Brendan Bathersby says about 60 business operators attended the Coffee + Connect event held at The MET, a new space in the city centre for events, activations and performances.

“The strong turnout reflects the high level of interest about the project,” he says.

“It’s also recognition of the importance that such a large scale, long-term project plays for this region. It will be a real game changer for Maroochydore and the Sunshine Coast, especially with the international broadband network coming online next year and delivering the fastest data and telecommunications link to Asia from the east coast of Australia.”

SURF REPORT

with MWP’s man in the water

Last Sunday I counted 62 in the water at Moffat Headland at 9am and not many waves coming through. That said, the conditions were magical. At one point the surfers were so close together a group cuddle would have been in order. And if you have seen some of the old, smelly guys in the water, it would have been awkward!

Then, last Wednesday, it turned on and most were sleeping. There were waves aplenty with low numbers. What is the point, you ask? The point, my wavedstarved friends, is the early bird catches the worm! Or the wave in this case. So get up early and enjoy the best part of the day!
