H

ow incredible are the Morcombes? From absolute despair and tragedy, Bruce and Denise Morcombe have risen up and created a lasting legacy in the name of their son, Daniel. In the process, they have helped make all of our children safer.

This year marks the 15th anniversary of the creation of the Daniel Morcombe Foundation and its flagship events, Day for Daniel and Walk for Daniel. In those 15 years, a groundswell of support has grown to the point where the entire country embraces the key messages of the Morcombe Foundation – recognise, react, report.

Last year, 1.2 million people around the country donned red clothing – the colour Daniel was wearing the day he went missing – and took to the streets for the National Day of Action to raise awareness of child safety, protection and harm prevention.

This week, journalist Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane sits down with the Morcombes in the new Daniel House at Palmwoods for a heart-to-heart about what has been achieved over the past 15 years and the foundation’s vision for the future.

Also this week, we profile acclaimed musician Clare Bowditch, who is visiting our region in November to talk about her beautiful new memoir, and we feature the winners of the HIA–iLandscape Housing Awards Sunshine Coast and Wide Bay. The winning kitchen will no doubt inspire envy!

Your greatest regret? Not pushing myself harder at school. I am very happy with all I have achieved, but now I have children I understand how fortunate we are to have free public schooling and I regret not working harder and being more focused.

Obviously my kids, but also starting Miss Monogram from nothing. Seeing my passion come to fruition and seeing our customers using their products proudly has given me so much joy.

Amazon will soon start selling wireless earbuds, finger rings and prescription eyeglasses with its Alexa voice assistant built in. The goal: Get Alexa outside the home and wherever customers are.

Day for Daniel It’s the 15th anniversary of Day for Daniel, and Bruce and Denise Morcombe are more dedicated than ever to protecting our children.

D

aniel Morcombe is a name forever etched into the Australian psyche. He is the 13-year-old Palmwoods boy who went missing on December 7, 2003.

The red T-shirt he was wearing has become an iconic symbol of child safety in this country due to the tireless work his parents, Bruce and Denise, have put in since 2005 to build up the resilience of our children and strengthen the resolve of parents, teachers and carers to have the tough what-if conversations that have the power to save lives.

As has been the case on the last Friday of October for the past 15 years, a sea of thousands decked out in red will participate in the four-kilometre Walk for Daniel from Suncoast Christian College to Briggs Park in Palmwoods in honour of Daniel, who was finally found in 2011, his abductor and murderer now locked away in jail.

The annual Day for Daniel is much more than a tribute to the youngster; it is a national day of action for child safety.

More than 3600 schools and day-care centres across Australia will tune in to the Daniel Morcombe Foundation’s Biggest Child Safety Lesson and learn how to Recognise, React and Report unsafe situations.

The resources provided to the community free of charge by the Daniel Morcombe Foundation have already created waves of positive change.

The foundation sent out a survey to Queensland schools last year, which included a question about students reporting crimes against them following Day for Daniel or

Child Safety Week education events.

Of the 500 schools that participated in the survey, six per cent of schools reported concerning disclosures.

“It doesn’t sound like a lot, but there were 106 disclosures as a result of education and creating an environment where children felt safe to let a trusted adult know that something had happened to them,” Mr Morcombe says.

“These kids probably would never have come forward without that.”

Mrs Morcombe says as well as raising body awareness and empowering children to set boundaries around physical contact, children are becoming less scared to ask for help if something does happen to them.

“In the past, the victims have been so frightened and there was great fear around disclosing,” Mr Morcombe says. “More people now understand it is not your fault if you are a victim of crime. It’s especially never a child’s fault, and if you let someone know, we can look after you.”

Mrs Morcombe adds, “Teachers often come up to us after one of our in-school education events, which Bruce and I still do, and let us know in person that a child has made a disclosure while we are there.”

Mr Morcombe admits trying to pin down “reliable” statistics around crimes against children is near impossible.

“With disclosure rates seeming to go up,

you may be inclined to think the number of offences is on the rise, but it is most likely due to the confidence that victims have to find their voice and speak up,” he says.

“One of our biggest achievements is the Daniel Morcombe Child Safety Curriculum, where we teach Recognise, React and Report.

It is the only child safety program used in Queensland and is always available to every state and territory in Australia.

“We would like to see a future where all children and young people are provided with education, protection and support to be safe from abuse and risk of harm.”

The Daniel Morcombe Foundation already has a host of ageappropriate child safety resources for children and young people that are designed specifically to prevent abuse and promote lifelong health and wellbeing.

There are resources for children with special needs and for First Nations families as well as educators, parents and carers.

Through their Walk Tall program, they also directly support young victims of crime.

There is no doubt the Morcombes have met with countless people from all walks of life on their quest to give back to the community that have supported them from the day Daniel went missing.

Just a few weeks ago, Queensland Governor Paul de Jersey met with the Morcombes at Daniel House in Palmwoods to pass on his congratulations and tour the foundation’s new headquarters, which officially opened in February.

On the way home, a “bikie” gave them a friendly wave. Mr Morcombe says while these two men would obviously “live very different lives”, it goes to show the power of Daniel’s legacy and the support for the foundation.

But Mr Morcombe says they are, at the end of the day, “just Daniel’s mum and dad”.

“Denise and my story has captured Australia’s imagination over a lot of years and because we are very easy to contact, we have had a number of parents and families reach out to us over the years with family members or friends who have been victims involved in horrific crimes from violent sex offences through to murders and they seek guidance and support from us,” he says.

“We are not qualified counsellors, but we help them where we can and refer them onto other services. Likewise, survivors come in all forms. At every event, someone will come up to us to congratulate us on our work and suddenly, they can’t talk. It could be a big, burly man in his fifties and you can see his chin start to quiver and you just know.

“He might not share it with you, but you wonder ‘what happened to you?’ There are so many survivors that never spoke up and had that path forward in recovery because they thought they would not be believed.

What we are doing is making sure that the 10-year-olds we see don’t feel that way.

Mrs Morcombe says there is no doubt that her heart breaks when she hears the stories of loss and suffering of so many people around the country, but she also feels good that she can provide some level of support to those in need of it.

“I will never forget we were speaking with a woman in her eighties one day, who told us she was distraught that she had lost her son in difficult circumstances three years before.

Her son was in his seventies and it made us realise that it doesn’t matter how old you are, if you lose a child at any age it is still beyond painful,” she says.

Mr Morcombe says while Daniel was abducted by someone unknown to the family, the “stereotypical stranger lurking in the shadows is no longer a reality”.

“The predators are in our homes every moment on social media and kids, in their quest to be popular and have the most friends, are welcoming them in,” he says.

“These predators, they appear as 13-year-olds with a pony, but the reality is very different and this adult male could be based in Sydney and be prepared to fly up to the Sunshine Coast to meet a child.”

“I go to primary schools right across Australia and the principals are pulling their hair out because the parents aren’t enforcing this,” Dr Carr-Gregg says.

“You have got up to 60 per cent to 70 per cent of primary school kids on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat. We have to get that message through to parents, we have to educate them, and at the moment we are not doing enough.”

Mr Morcombe says parents and carers need to be more proactive than ever in educating their tweens and teens to only connect with people online that they know in real life.

“As the ones who pay the bills, adults also need to be exercising their right to see the photos being taken and shared [by their children], the friends they have on social media and the conversations they are having.

It is so important. In fact, it’s a war and we need to make sure we do what we can to keep our kids safe,” he says.

“Apps do exist that allow you to hide things under a ‘skin’ like a calculator, so sneaky kids will still be sneaky, that’s been around since the caveman days when a girl would say she was going to a friend’s bonfire when she was really sneaking off in the other direction to be with a boy.

“But the repercussions are so much more severe now. What we can do is have those conversations, be proactive and teach our kids safety messages.”

At Day for Daniel, a series of Conversation Cards will be released by the Morcombe Foundation to help parents and carers bridge the gap and have open discussions with their children about child safety.

I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to take a tour with Mrs Morcombe through Daniel House, which was opened in February this year.

Nestled in gardens lovingly tended to by Mr Morcombe, Daniel House is located just outside Palmwoods and has become the permanent headquarters of the Daniel Morcombe Foundation and a place where children going through their Walk Tall program can meet with counsellors in a homely and private setting.

The building houses three counselling rooms, offices for the foundation’s seven staff, a boardroom, purpose-built sound room and the Morcombes’ office. It is a far cry from the home-based HQ they created in 2005.

“Daniel House has given us a vision for the next 20 years, which is enormous. For the past 15 years, we have only been able to plan from one fundraising event to the next,” Mr Morcombe says.

“The saying, ‘build it and they will come’ is true for us. We now have the ability to budget for the next three years and that has never happened before.”

They are still the only members of the foundation that go out to schools and are

now in a position where they can review the requests that come in from around the country and plan which ones they will visit the following year.

2005 – The Daniel Morcombe Foundation was established and the inaugural Walk for Daniel was held, attracting 90 supporters.

2006 – The Foundation Red child safety DVD was launched.

2011 – Daniel’s predator was arrested and Daniel was brought home.

2012 – The Orbit Rescue sexual abuse prevention program was launched, including a game app for children.

2014 – Keeping Kids Safe, an awardwinning resource, was launched.

2018 – The Foundation won the Sunshine Coast Australia Day Community Group/ Organisation Award.

2019 – Daniel House opened in February.

In April, the Federal Government announced it would allocate $7 million to go towards a sex offenders list in Australia, called Daniel’s Law. In October, the sod was turned on the Build it for the Kids charity auction property, which is being constructed by Murphy Builders with help from 50 local businesses and trades on a lot in Harmony.

SOMETHING NEW FOR BULCOCK STREET A development application has been lodged with Sunshine Coast Council to create a quality cultural, commercial and residential hub on Caloundra’s Bulcock Street. It includes a mixeduse development comprising a four-star hotel with 77 suites and 119 short-term and permanent residential apartments alongside retail, dining and community spaces. The mixed-use project, SEA Caloundra, is located at the top of Bulcock Street bordering Canberra Terrace and Knox Avenue on a site at the eastern gateway to Caloundra’s CBD. The applicant for the project is Caloundra Central, a long-term property owner in Bulcock Street. The company represents investors experienced in property development, both on the Sunshine Coast and overseas.

Company spokesperson Syd Walker of Place Property says the applicants are committed to the rejuvenation of Bulcock Street, while maintaining Caloundra’s warm and welcoming community, so that Caloundra can continue to create fond memories for locals, visitors and holidaymakers.

Mr Walker says the project is expected to generate $347.4 million during the construction phase and when completed an extra $73.7 million will be injected into the local economy annually.

COAST STUDENTS PROVE TO BE THE BEST IN AUSTRALIA Buderim Mountain State School students have won the national Language and Literature category of the Opti-MINDS competition final. The winning team comprised seven students from grades four to six, who demonstrated their problem-solving abilities in a series of challenges over two days. The students secured their position in the nationals after winning seven awards at the regional Opti-MINDS event in August. To win the Language and Literature title, they presented concerns and ideas on the diminishing amount of green spaces in urban communities, participating in a three-hour team challenge.

New data released from headspace National Youth Mental Health Foundation reveals 62 per cent of young Australians say the mental health of young people is getting worse, with 37 per cent of respondents saying social media is one of the leading contributors. Expectations from school, family or community and work or study pressures were also called out. Headspace CEO Jason Trethowan says, “A young person’s real-world persona and online persona are so intertwined these days so for example, if they’re being vulnerable online or sharing something personal and not getting the reaction they were hoping for, it can be really upsetting.”

REMEMBERING LISA A young woman’s words continue to help others thanks to the release of a book in her honour. WORDS: Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane.

L

isa Magill was one in a million. The young woman made the decision to share her story following a diagnosis of terminal stomach cancer. Her raw and uncensored blog, Terminally Fabulous, was read by more than 65,000 people around the world, who drew comfort in being able to relate to Miss Magill’s honesty.

Miss Magill lost her cancer battle in March 2017 after four years living with the disase. Next month, her mother Geraldine will release a book bearing the same name as the blog.

“A week or two before Lisa passing, I committed to creating the book for her,” Mrs Magill says. “It was her wish to have the blog transformed into a book so that her words and thoughts would continue to help people.

“It’s taken me two years, because it was an emotionally and almost traumatic process, having to go back to those memories, but I wanted to make the book as good as it can be and something that Lisa would be completely proud of.”

Mrs Magill says her daughter was inundated with private messages from people reaching out for advice, support and simple companionship. “Lisa made sure to respond to every single message up until that last

couple of weeks of her life. While she was helping them, it also helped her feel somewhat normal that somebody understood what she was going through.

“Lisa had many late-night conversations with people over the other side of the world, which provided her comfort in the early hours of the morning.”

“When you are on a cancer journey, whether you are the patient or the family member, your head is so full of things like appointment times, medication requirements, ensuring you keep as healthy as possible. You are 100 per cent focused on the situation that you don’t even think about arranging something like a family holiday to make memories.”

Dreams2Live4 receives no government funding and sources referrals for dreamers aged 17 and older from more than 170 hospitals around Australia, and the Sunshine Coast University Hospital is among them.

Mrs Magill will be on the Sunshine Coast on November 28 to launch Terminally Fabulous at a charity luncheon at The Lakehouse in Mountain Creek. Just like the blog, the book is designed to provide real support, with no subject off limits and Miss Magill’s humour and brutal honest shining through.

As a co-author, Mrs Magill also added her insights into what it was like to be a carer for her daughter.

Todd and Sami from 92.7 Mix FM will host the luncheon and Sunshine Coast talent Taylor Moss will perform live on the day.

All profits from the book sales will be donated to Dreams2Live4, which makes dreams come true for patients who are living with metastatic cancer.

The Magills were able to have a dream holiday to Broome in Western Australia in 2016 through this amazing charity, a holiday Mrs Magill says she will always remember.

“Somebody from the charity reached out to Lisa and asked if there was anything they could do for her. Lisa said she’d always wanted to visit Broome.

BUDERIM 9 CHALLENGE IS BACK FOR CEREBRAL PALSY CHARITY

I

t is a challenge that puts even the most physically fit to the test, and it is back bigger than ever this year.

The Buderim 9 Challenge 2019 event was launched last week, marking nine years of successfully raising funds for Coast charity CPL (Choice Passion Life).

The challenge is an exciting annual 76-kilometre community cycling event covering nine hills around Buderim. It lasts for three hours and is held on the last Sunday every year before Christmas, which will be December 22 this year.

Last year, $20,000 was raised to support children and families in the region with cerebral palsy. Since Buderim 9 began, the event has raised more than $120,000.

This year, the event will become more inclusive than ever, with new distance categories including Buderim 3, Buderim 6 and Buderim Electric, a special category for electric bikes.

There will also be a Disability Kids Ride organised by Sunshine Coast Developmental Physiotherapy in the Buderim Wanderers Football Club. The kids’ cycling machines will be in action while the main riders navigate the hilly terrain on the official route.

Clare Bowditch reaches for the light

W

e’ve only been chatting for five minutes and Clare Bowditch has already made me laugh.

Speaking with My Weekly Preview in the lead-up to her Sunshine Coast visit, she is funny, insightful and very down-to-earth. She recalls her first visit to our region as a WWOOFer (a volunteer farm worker) back in 1994 with fondness, and is looking forward to revisiting our region.

“I stayed on farms in the Glass House Mountains and Maleny areas,” she says.

“I remember the beauty of it. Picking macadamia nuts and avocados from a tree just completely blew my mind. And the size of the bananas – it was fecund! I remember shovelling lots of manure and the Maleny family I stayed with taught me how to dumpster dive!”

award, releasing top 10 albums and moving into the upper echelons of the Australian music industry. She was named Woman of the Year by Rolling Stone and toured with Leonard Cohen, who was so smitten he proposed.

Having performed on the Melbourne pub circuit since she was 17, Ms Bowditch came to national prominence in 2012 when she appeared in the Channel Ten show Offspring.

Her latest project is a raw, heart-wrenching yet uplifting memoir, Your Own Kind of Girl.

It’s a book she wanted to write for 20 years, but life as a musician, actor, radio presenter, entrepreneur and mother of three came first.

It also took time to work up the courage to reveal some painful episodes in her life.

“The book is about reaching for the light and I would love to have been able to avoid speaking about the darkness to be able to hand over the hope, but it doesn’t work that way,” she says. “I had to share some personal stories in order for it to make sense. I felt like in order for people to relate to it, I needed to tell that human story. It was uncomfortable, but I kept going because I kept thinking of me in that desperate state.”

Born into a large Catholic family, tragedy struck when Ms Bowditch was young and it caused her to carry repressed grief for many years. This manifested as severe anxiety that eventually led to a nervous breakdown.

Her intricate descriptions of the swirling, irrational thoughts of dread, doom and self-loathing that gripped her are harrowing, but this is not a dark book. In fact, it’s peppered with Ms Bowditch’s wry humour and quirky anecdotes.

“I wrote it for people who have had or know someone who has had this experience of acute self-doubt, trying to make sense of the long tail of childhood grief, which is misunderstood. The intention was born 21 years ago, at the start of my own recovery from the acute panic and anxiety and it was a hopeful thought that one day I might be well

enough to have a story to share. For me that feeling never went away and at the age of 40, I finally got the balls to do it.”

Looking at Ms Bowditch today, it’s hard to imagine the years of torment she put herself through, never believing she’d make it as a musician because she thought she was too large. She shines with confidence now, but for many years, she struggled with body image and feelings of inadequacy.

“I was having dinner recently with my mum and sisters and a lady come up to our table and said, ‘you look really familiar, you’re not Adele are you?’ I get this a lot.

“It’s really funny, but it’s also gorgeous because it indicates there are different role models available for our girls. But to be clear, that story I told myself about not being good enough, that story happened at every size. It happened when I was thin and when I was fat, it happened when I was young and when I was older.”

Ms Bowditch found salvation in the work of Dr Claire Weekes, an Australian doctor credited with pioneering modern anxiety treatment using cognitive therapy, which Ms Bowditch details in her book.

“I would’ve no doubt ignored it if I hadn’t been so desperate. She’s a gorgeous little old lady who looked like my grandmother. I would’ve said no way, give me something cooler. Because I was so desperate and she spoke directly to the symptoms of my anxiety – she called it nervous suffering – suddenly I felt recovery was possible, even for me.”

Solar farm charges ahead The Solar Farm is quietly making a massive difference for our region and the environment.

t’s been two years since the Sunshine Coast Solar Farm started generating power at full capacity.

In that time, it’s been the quiet achiever, silently delivering savings and offsetting more than 107 per cent of Sunshine Coast Council’s electricity costs.

This region-shaping project has enabled council to combat rising electricity costs by taking proactive control of its electricity supply. And with electricity prices predicted to rise and council’s facilities continuing to grow each year, the Solar Farm future proofs ratepayer dollars - money better spent delivering services to the community.

Over the past two years the Solar Farm has generated 58,863 megawatt hours of electricity. The total energy consumed by council in the past two years was 54,947 megawatt hours.

Perhaps most importantly for our region,

the Solar Farm is packing a powerful environmental punch. A massive 47,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions have been avoided since operations commenced.

The Solar Farm is certainly working for our community but it’s just one part of the clean energy puzzle, representing just seven per cent of the region’s current solar generation.

Forty-three per cent of homes on the Sunshine Coast have already made the switch to rooftop solar and it’s our community which can make the most significant impact. (APVI June 2019: 208 MW total capacity of rooftop solar and Sunshine Coast Solar Farm).

It’s with that in mind, and the growth of future environmental custodians, that council has moved into the detailed design stage of an

education centre at the Solar Farm site.

The education centre will serve to inspire and educate not just our community, but the broader Australian community, which has demonstrated interest in learning from our Sunshine Coast approach.

WIDE AWAKE AT 3AM?

AVOIDING THE BLAME GAME

Sami Muirhead has trouble sleeping so she has turned to an app that plays stories in the southern drawl of Matthew McConaughey.

Suzanne Loubris says most people are quick to blame the other person during relationship conflicts and asks – what if it’s you who needs to change?

O

h, sleep. I miss you! Are you also a fellow vampire? Do you also struggle to sleep at night and instead walk the corridors of your home in a blanket of darkness?

Back in the day, I could party for hours, fall into bed and be asleep within seconds.

But fast-forward to my mid-forties and my night routine is different. I struggle to sleep.

Even with a diffuser puffing out clouds of lavender-smelling smoke and an expensive pillow and soft relaxing music, I still battle.

I take magnesium. I use ear plugs and a sleep mask. I try to meditate. But still I frequently wake up about 3am and start to think about all the things I have not done and all the people I have not contacted and all the emails I have not read.

Why haven’t I started cooking more organic food? Should we look at Airbnb-ing our home if we ever hope to take all the kids on an overseas holiday? Is it too early to start my Christmas shopping? Should I try the keto diet? Am I truly happy in life?

But instead of getting out of bed and achieving something practical, I stay awake for hours cursing myself and getting so worked up and worried about the fact I am going to be so tired tomorrow.

It is a vicious cycle. Throw in coffee every day, wine most nights and little people and little dogs sharing the bed and its no wonder I have not had a good night’s sleep in about a decade. But help is here in the form of Matthew McConaughey. I am in fact being

I recently purchased the Calm app and it has celebrities reading stories to help you drift off into peaceful slumber. The actor uses his southern drawl to tell you about the cosmos. I look forward to my time with Matthew each evening. But I have a few men on the go. Stephen Fry takes me on a meander every night through the lavender fields of Provence.

“It’s no wonder I have not had a good night’s sleep in about a decade” since only last year. And last week the US military revealed the trick it uses to help its personnel get to sleep in two minutes. You must first relax the muscles in your face and then breathe out, keeping your chest relaxed. But here is the strange bit: you must then visualise one of two scenarios. The first is lying in a canoe in a calm lake with blue skies all around you. The second scenario I am going to try. It is visualising being wrapped in a black velvet hammock in a dark room. Now that sounds like I would revert back to being a vampire. I know that routine well. Wish me luck.

henever you are having relationship difficulties, it’s always their fault, isn’t it? We say to ourselves, if only they could be more loving, more affectionate, more interested. We tell all our friends how bad they are treating us – everyone agrees and says to kick them to the curb.

But, did you tell your friends about the things you said and did in the heat of the moment? Have you reflected on the possibility that it might be you? That just maybe you are the problem?

Hmm, that’s a bit challenging and confronting isn’t it? Just maybe you were the problem all along. How can someone tell you that you are the one ruining the relationship, if you are committed to your view of yourself as blameless and perfect?

You’re perceiving everything they do as the cause of the problems and you feel completely justified in your position. No effort to self-reflect; no willingness to consider that you may have the wrong end of the stick. You might spend a lot of time explaining how right you are and how justified you are in reacting as you do. They may try to respond a few times in the beginning – but it doesn’t take long for them to learn to keep quiet and nod. Then they are in trouble for not communicating.

I have listened to clients try to explain to their partner how problematic their behaviour is and they don’t get the first sentence out before they get cut off,

disagreed with and not given a chance.

How is someone supposed to tell us we are destroying the relationship if we are not prepared to listen? I have seen couples who are clearly in love, but they’re in pain.

Neither party is willing to consider that their behaviour may be at the root of the problem.

Just imagine a world where we could truly walk a mile in our partner’s shoes and try seeing things from their perspective.

Create an environment where they feel safe to tell us how they feel and what we are doing that is not loving and constructive to the relationship. As long as we try to be open and honest about our feelings and experiences in a gentle and respectful way, we’ll have a lot less miscommunication and conflict. We have to be willing to listen to the other person’s opinions and consider that they might be right. That maybe we are doing or saying the wrong things.

So what do we need to do to stop this train wreck? Maybe we all need to start with ourselves and question what we are doing to cause conflict and ways we can avoid this. Take some time to reflect on whether you would like to be in a relationship with yourself (and your behaviour). If you are really brave, you could ask people around you to give you feedback on how you come across and listen without getting upset, but rather see this feedback as things you can do to improve yourself and your relationships.

WISE WORDS For Sunshine Coast author Taryn Bashford, writing young adult novels is much more than just bringing stories to life; it is about creating a “metaphorical hug” for her readers.

“I want to connect to teenagers to show them that while life is tough, we all go through challenges in life and I hope through showcasing some of these in my novels I can help them to understand what they are going through and feel like they are not alone,” she says.

“As a teenager, I read a book that dealt with daddy issues and it helped me to understand some of the issues I was going through. It connected with me so much that I want to replicate this for my readers with other issues.”

The Peregian Beach resident’s latest novel, The Astrid Notes, delves into the world of Jacob Skalicky, a trust fund kid and one of the main characters from her debut The Harper Effect.

Ms Bashford says the character Jacob stayed with her long after she had finished The Harper Effect and she couldn’t let him go.

“He was still the one that was most messed up, he still needed fixing, he was still angry, didn’t know what his future would be,” she says. “He had patched things up with Harper, but he needed to find his own route without her. That’s where Astrid came in.”

Writing has always been a passion for Ms Bashford, who was 23 years old when she submitted her first manuscript for a novel titled A Walk in the Park which Little, Brown Book Group in England showed interest in. But in

a sliding doors moment, Ms Bashford decided to focus on her fledgling career in advertising, and writing was pushed to the background for another two decades.

“I have trunk loads of unpublished books,” she says. “Through writing them all, I have found that I get about a quarter of the way through a book and it writes itself, the characters come alive and start talking and I never know what it going to happen. It’s like I’m watching a movie and just writing down what I see.”

PEAR AND GORGONZOLA PIZZA Time: 25 minutes | Serves: 8 INGREDIENTS • 1 large pita bread • 3 tbsp Mayver’s hulled tahini • 2 pears (sliced lengthways) • Handful fresh rocket • 50g gorgonzola cheese

METHOD Place pita bread down on a pizza tray. Spread a thin layer of Mayver’s tahini across the top. Slice the pear thinly across the centre, so they are flat slices. Lay them in a flower pattern across the pizza top. Scatter a couple of fresh rocket leaves across the top. Crumble the gorgonzola evenly over the pizza so that it will melt and cover the pizza with a thin layer of cheese. Place in moderate oven at 150° for around 15 minutes, or until cheese has melted. Be careful not to have the oven too high, otherwise the edges of the pita and rocket will burn.

TEPS Autism Treehouse builds community and connects Sunshine Coast families, children and young people living with autism.

It has grown to be the leading Sunshine Coast organisation to help families and professionals navigate the latest in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) information, resources, community events, NDIS support co-ordination and workshops.

According to the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA), 29 per cent of National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) participants with an approved plan have a primary disability of ASD, making it the largest primary disability category for the scheme as at March 2018.

NDIS data reveals outcomes for participants entering the scheme with ASD are worse in many respects than those for participants with other disabilities: â&#x20AC;˘ 0 to school: Participants with ASD are more likely than most other disability groups to experience difficulties in six or more areas of development and are less likely to be able to make friends, to participate in community activities, and to feel welcomed or included when participating. â&#x20AC;˘ School to 14: Participants with ASD were

HELPING MAKE LIFE EASIER

CASE STUDY

After more than a decade being the principal carer for her husband Steve, Alice Hardy is cutting back on her caring role to take up new career opportunities – and Mr Hardy is thrilled.

The Sunshine Coast resident was granted access to the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) last year aged 64.

With his plan approved at the start of 2019, for the first time in a long time he no longer has to rely on his wife to support him in everything he does.

Mrs Hardy has spent years juggling her twin needs to support her husband and bring home an income, working part-time and after-hours roles first as a cleaner, then in retail.

“I couldn’t really do much more than that because a lot of that time we still had three children at home and over the past 12 years Steve has needed me more and more, including driving him everywhere,” she says.

Mr Hardy has the genetic condition Usher syndrome, which caused congenital deafness from birth and the gradual onset of blindness from the age of 30.

He has worn a hearing aid from the age of six and learnt

how to talk properly only after the aid was fitted.

“I had to surrender my driver’s licence in 1992 as my peripheral vision dropped away,” he says. “I could still read a newspaper up until 2008, then that went too.

“I’ve injured myself falling down stairs, fallen flat on my face on the footpath – I’ve basically got no depth perception.

Despite these hurdles, Mr Hardy had a 38-year career in local government across two states, built up TAFE qualifications and almost completed a university degree along the way. A self-driven man, he has always taken enormous pride in standing on his own two feet and providing for his family. Then he was forced into early retirement in 2014.

“I was shocked – the way I saw it I was basically put out of work because of my disabilities,” Mr Hardy says. “Suddenly I was stuck at home while Alice had to do everything, looking after me and the kids and working in jobs she didn’t enjoy so we could pay the bills.

“Being made redundant when I felt I still had a lot to give caused me so much distress.”

After a tough few years since losing his job, Mr Hardy’s NDIS plan now pays for support to get him out of the house, into community activities and back into physical exercise. It’s also funded training in new screen-reading software.

“The NDIS pulled out all stops to get me on when the scheme went live on the Sunshine Coast on January 1 this year,” he says. “Since then I’ve had great support from Carers Queensland and Kathryn, my local area co-ordinator.”

With her time freed up, Mrs Hardy has recently completed a Certificate III in Disability Support at TAFE and is just about to start the 120-hour placement that will see her become a fully qualified disability support worker.

Grant McDonald Homes, Home of the Year rant McDonald Homes took out the Home of the Year at this year’s Housing Industry Association awards for a striking home at 13 Carnarvon Court, Yandina Creek. The People’s Choice Award went to a home at Sage Street in Buderim designed by Coastal Properties and Sprout Architects. Called the ‘Zen Home’, it was designed for a small lot, and used high ceilings, secondary rooms and storage spaces to give the small home a feeling of volume.

Frank Barrett, who has been a HIA judge for eight years, says the awards show some of the region’s best design and construction work. Mr Barrett says when looking at a house, judges use a template that awards points for all aspects of construction, with most of the points awarded for workmanship. Design is also important and does affect the score, but is not the main measure. The judges include designers, builders and certifiers.

“The standard of this year’s entries was very tight,” Mr Barrett says. “We were judging over five very full days and often finishing just before dark. The detail and value in some of the houses was awesome. There is a huge increase in the use of natural products such

as stone, timber and off-form concrete.

“The changes in houses over the last 10 years have been substantial,” he adds.

“The biggest change is indoor/outdoor living and natural lighting. Other changes include minimalist kitchens central to living areas, improved design and function, to ensuites and bathrooms often fully tiled.

Higher ceilings to give a greater feeling of space. These changes are a response to our climate and lifestyle.”

Another change in the region relates to small-lot housing. “The challenge for designers, builders and sub-contractors is immense. Designers have to deal with providing natural light into a building that is all but joined on long side walls. The designs on small lots have improved dramatically with some selling for over $1 million. The trades have also managed to improve the finishes.

“The quality of builders on the Sunshine Coast is very high. I believe they are among the best in the country.

“Last year the Sunshine Coast took out seven of the 10 state awards. That is a strong endorsement of design and workmanship from this region.”

Brad Read Design Group won Apartment of the Year for Tangalooma Residence, an exclusive waterfront apartment complex.

The multi-residential building consists of just four apartments and has communal features such as a lap pool, deck and access to individual boat mooring facilities. The building makes a statement both externally and internally, with each of the four apartments occupying an entire level with its own private lift from the basement to the unit. The visitor access is quite striking, with a four-storey high foyer showcasing water features and a green wall.

Sterrantino Developments took out the gong for Small Lot Housing with â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Crisp Clean Linesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;, a Mediterranean island-inspired luxe home at Orchid Lane, Sunshine Cove. The home was designed to complement a northfacing location, with an open-plan design with high ceilings allowing cool breezes to flow through and the sun to fully penetrate the home during winter. The crisp white colour palette was a key component of the build, complementing beautiful Australian timber finishes.

Tucked away in the Noosa hinterland, the contemporary home features an earthy palette of spotted gum flooring and free-form natural stone cladding to juxtapose the clean, black lines of the ‘modern box’. on the Sunshine Coast or even in Brisbane.

“I first met Zoe through our mums group and she too was also looking for a baby signing group and couldn’t find anything either, so we decided to just start our own.”

Ms Stigwood and Ms Twose say as a new parent it can be quite lonely and they wanted to create a group where parents could come together, share their experiences and feel

supported. “Aside from the benefits for the children and their communication, we really want Sunshine Sign and Sing to be another place where parents can come and meet each other,” Ms Stigwood says.

Nearly half of the apartments have already sold and Cube Development’s director Scott Juniper says there has been an overwhelming amount of interest in this project. “We only have one penthouse with a private rooftop terrace left for sale but all the residents will have access to a taste of luxury with the Curve private pontoon, resident gym, pilates studio, pool, spa and sauna,” he says.

“We have a lot of interest from buyers who are looking to downsize but don’t want to compromise on lifestyle and quality.

“We have families, first homeowners and people over the age of 50 showing interest and we know these buyers want to make the apartments their home – 90 per cent are owner-occupiers.
