emember that song? It’s a simple question, yet one that triggered quite a lengthy conversation in the My Weekly Preview office recently.

It started with an enthusiastic chat about our favourite hits of the 1980s, before moving to a reminiscing session (I promise, we do work!) about the era’s stellar fashion.

There was Leigh with her lime green tube skirt and fluro pink socks, and Anita with a bubble skirt.

My personal favourite was washed denim.

Before long we were excitedly sharing memories from our childhood. There were a lot of laughs and plenty of exclamations of agreement, as memory after memory flooded back. And so became the inspiration for this week’s feature story – Take a trip back in time.

From riding in the back of our dads’ utes, to the risk of damaging our wrist bones while playing clackers, everyone in our office had a story to tell.

And, as the year-end draws closer and we edge towards a new decade – one that will be known as the ’20s – we thought what better time than the present to take a step back to the good old days.

Your family includes? My husband, two sons, our beautiful border collie, a goat, a sheep, budgie, duck and way too many chickens.

First car? A Holden HR. Favourite book? Stephen Hawking’s A Brief History of Time.

What are you reading now? Clan of the Cave Bear by Jean M Auel.

As the secretary of the Suncoast Spinners Wheelchair Basketball Club, Sharon Hill was recently awarded a University of the Sunshine Coast Honorary Senior Fellowship for her services. She has tripled the club’s membership and created opportunities to employ people with disabilities. Ms Hill is an animal lover who has a passion to change the way the society views the abilities of people with a disability.

Your greatest regret? I try not to have regrets but to move forward each day.

What achievement are you most proud of? The Honorary Senior Fellow award is one I am most proud of as it reflects my passion for inclusive sport.

What are you watching right now, would you recommend it, and why? I am trying to watch Outlander and I would definitely recommend it.

Can you nominate a day in your life that turned out to be a turning point and why? The day I was introduced to Dr Bridie Kean. Over the past four years we have worked together to develop the Reverse Inclusion sporting movement, which encourages people without a disability to participate in wheelchair sport.

When was the last time you played sport and what was it? I am not a sporty person at all. The closest I have come to playing any sport is to jump in a wheelchair to make up numbers on court.

Best advice you’ve been given? The best advice I have ever received is to just accept compliments when offered; say ‘thank you’.

What is your favourite place on the Sunshine Coast and why? Home is where I most like to be, with my family.

If you could change one thing on the Sunshine Coast, what would it be? Create an accessible sporting venue.

Best day in your life and why? In 2004 my family spent eight weeks in the US travelling. I took one day for

The European Union and some American states have also phased out the use of BPA, which was commonly used in plastic products.

Some of the Sunshine Coast’s heritage buildings will be open to the public this weekend. Sunshine Coast Open House program features Bankfoot House, Caloundra Lighthouses, Fairview and Pioneer Cottage. Cobb & Co coaches, travelling between Brisbane and the Gympie goldfields, used the property as a lunch stop and staging post. The house was named after Mary’s village in Scotland. Independent travellers used Bankfoot House as an overnight stop, paying one shilling for dinner, one shilling for a bed and one shilling to feed and stable their horse. TAKE A TRIP BACK IN TIME Who remembers the days before smartphones were constantly interrupting our lives? The years prior to the world wide web? Or, a time when sitting around the telly with the family, watching Young Talent Time, was considered a great Saturday night. Life has become so busy. We rush to work, stress more than we need to, and yearn for quieter days; the good old days.

Here at MWP, we’ve been reminiscing, so we decided to share some of our favourite memories with you. Enjoy!

There was only one shop we wanted to browse in during the ’80s, and that was the Sale of Century gift shop. From 1980 through to 2001, Sale of the Century dominated Australian televisions.

Originally hosted by the suave Tony Barber, the game show was later presented by Glenn Ridge, while hostesses included the likes of Delvene Delaney, Jo Bailey and Nicky Buckley.

Oh, how our viewing habits have changed.

Back in the days before reality TV, we loved The Beverly Hilbillies, Hogan’s Heroes, The Brady Bunch, Mr Squiggle, Happy Days, Mash and Gilligan’s Island.

Who else still shudders at the thought of drinking warm milk? The Australian government’s free milk scheme was introduced after Prime Minister Robert Menzies raised the issue in a letter to state premiers in 1950. The Milk for School Children Act was passed in all states and territories, with the exception of Queensland, whose government raised concerns about the tropical climate and milk delivery and quality. The state later adopted the program in 1953, and in the end around 150,000 Queensland school children were consuming 113,500 litres of free milk each week. The Education Queensland website provides this anecdote: “Teachers and children of the 1950s and 1960s will remember that the milk was supplied in small bottles containing one third of a pint. Plain drinking straws were provided. The insertion of the straw into the

bottle was challenging. The bottle was almost impossible to open by normal means, which was downward pressure under the palm of the hand followed by a twisting motion. It would open by the ‘thumb through the lid’ strategy. Use of the thumb was problematic as it had to be discreet given that it was forbidden. The secret was not always well kept as it could be explosively messy.

“The taste of the free school milk will remain vividly in the memory of school children from this era. The milk was never refrigerated and on a hot Queensland day, the taste it had acquired by ‘little lunch’ could be sickening. Enjoyment was not improved if you forgot to shake the bottle before opening and got a mouthful of warm, sometimes lumpy cream.”

DID YOU KNOW? FEBRUARY MARKS 36 YEARS SINCE THE CONTROVERSIAL MEDICARE SYSTEM WAS INTRODUCED INTO AUSTRALIA. PRIME MINISTER BOB HAWKE CALLED IT AN HISTORIC INITIATIVE.

A favourite family pastime was digging in to fish and chips on a Saturday night while watching Young Talent Time. The original variety show ran from 1971 until 1988 and was hosted by singer-songwriter Johnny Young. The program featured a core group of young performers and a junior talent quest. The popular show launched the careers of a number of Australian performers including Jamie Redfern, Tina Arena and Dannii Minogue.

Riding in the back of dad’s ute, or mum’s station wagon was a rite of passage for any Aussie kid prior to the ’90s. One MWP staff member tells the story of travelling to the Gold Coast as a kid to visit an aunt and uncle. While holidaying, the two families – four adults and eight children in total – would pile into one station wagon and drive an hour to Coolangatta to buy eggs. It seemed totally normal at the time.

Oh, and don’t get us started on ‘baby safety seats’. We’ve all heard the stories of how our mums would bundle bub into a wicker basket, pop it on the back seat and head into town. It was completely legal, of course.

Playing elastics in the school playground was a favourite pastime.

The game required a large elastic band, which was placed around the ankles of two ‘anchor’ players, and then the jumping began. Other yard games we loved as kids include stuck in the mud, red rover and what’s the time Mr Wolf?

REMEMBER CLICK CLACKS/ CLACKERS? ANYONE ELSE GET BRUISED OR BROKEN WRISTS FROM THESE BAD BOYS? Hands up who snuck into a drive-in hidden under a blanket, or in the car boot? These open-air cinemas were hugely popular from the 1950s to the 1970s, with 330 venues in Australia at their peak. Pyjama-clad kids would pile into the family car, while young couples thought it was the ultimate date night. It’s thought that only 16 drive-ins still exist across the country today.

The first televisions weren’t only black and white, they also needed fine tuning every time you changed the channel.

That involved moving the dial and then the rabbit ears. Every. Single. Time. As the years went by, we were lucky enough to have access to three or four television channels. Ad breaks were a time to dash to the loo! Even better, who remembers the test pattern on the telly?

On Friday nights during the ’80s and ’90s, Aussie teens could be found holed up in their bedroom, hovering over their cassette players, fingers at the ready to record the top pop songs of the week from the radio.

It was during the early 1950s that Cuisenaire rods first became a staple in school classrooms. These colourful, wooden bars assisted generation after generation of Australians in learning how to add and subtract.

Australian fashion has moved steadily with the times.

Here’s a quick snapshot of the nation’s style file.

1940s – A-frame skirts, hourglass shapes and high waists sum up this decade.

1960s – Revolutionary and rebellious, the ’60s brought colour, mini-dresses and mini-skirts. Oh, and we can’t forget the go-go boots, and the bikini’s debut.

1980s – Big hair, bright makeup and a lot of neon – welcome to the ’80s! Perms had never before been so popular, and leg warmers, leotards and netted gloves were the height of fashion.

Who else can remember regular blackouts during the 1980s? Electricity outages and power strikes were common during Sir Joh Bjelke-Petersen’s reign, until he turned around and sacked a thousand SEQEB workers. It was a tumultuous time, but for many Queensland families, the blackouts were also a great opportunity to connect over a game of Chinese checkers, Mastermind and draughts.

ANTARCTICA PIONEER TO SPEAK AT USC The Royal Geographical Society of Queensland Sunshine Coast and the University of the Sunshine Coast (USC) Geography have joined forces to present a seminar from Sydney Kirkby on The Getting of Australian Antarctica.

Mr Kirkby will speak on how Australia, a nation which had no individual identity for almost all of the discovery phase of Antarctica’s history, became its biggest claimant. Mr Kirkby undertook many expeditions in the late ’50s through to the early ’80s engaged in Australia’s Antarctic program, undertaking extensive and prolonged sledging journeys for exploration and mapping. In the early years of this work about 85 per cent of Antarctica was unexplored. From about the mid-1960s, his major focus shifted to the national topographic mapping program, where he was heavily involved in such developments as Aerodist, the revolutionary airborne electronic survey system, the laser terrain profiler, digital photogrammetry and ortho photomapping. Mr Kirkby’s lecture will be held on October 22 from 7.15pm to 9pm at USC Lecture Theatre 2 (K Block). GAGA TO REGURGITATOR She has created unique headpieces that adorned the head of international music icon Lady Gaga and now Gympie-based designer Cindy Vogels has announced another massive wardrobe design project… Regurgitator. The Sunshine Coast delivered its highest ever international and domestic visitor numbers in the year to June 30, 2019 – and led the state in overseas visitor growth. Tourism Research Australia’s International Visitor Survey (IVS) and National Visitor Survey (NVS) show overnight visitor expenditure was a record $2.6 billion, an increase of 8.3 per cent and we had a record 3.98 million visitors, an increase of 17.1 per cent.

STUDENT ATHLETE WINS USC’S FIRST CYCLING MEDAL Jacqui Russell and esteemed Captain Laura Langman have re-committed to Sunshine Coast Lightning ahead of season 2020, with the club officially retaining all of its current 10-athlete squad. Re-signing two-time Team Spirit Award recipient Ms Russell for next season is a boost to the club’s midcourt stocks. The 31-year-old, who predominantly plays at wing defence, has repeatedly shown just how relentless she is one-on-one, as well as her attacking drive. Born to be wild

Growing up, did you enjoy Johnny’s music, and was he an inspiration for you to go into the entertainment business? Oh absolutely.

Whenever I’d spend time with Johnny and my cousins, I’d always walk away thinking, wow, he’s the kinda guy I want to be. Not just because he was effortlessly cool and super famous, and flashy and fun and magnetic in every way, but also because he was a good man. Wild as a tiger in a tiger-skin suit, and obviously full of the highs and lows of his heart’s journey, but also huge-hearted and loving in every way.

TV personality Andrew O’Keefe will visit the Coast in November for his stage show celebrating the life of his famous uncle, Johnny O’Keefe.

What can we expect from the show? I can’t wait to let this show loose on the Coast. What you’ll get is a stomping tour through the greatest hits of JOK, woven together with very personal stories of his life, and of my relationship with him. And those stories take you right into the heart of the songs, to shine a light on the soul of a man who’s music changed the lives of so many others.

Do we need to brace ourselves for any audience participation? Only if you have a

dodgy back. Otherwise, the participation will be positively therapeutic for body and soul. If you ever saw JOK in concert, you’ll know exactly what I mean!

Is it aimed primarily at Johnny O’Keefe fans or is it the kind of show music fans of any age will rock out to? Oh definitely both. The fans that know and love JOK’s music will hear it in concert for the first time in 40 years, performed by some sizzling hot rock ‘n’ roll musos and a guy

Does the show tell any aspects of Johnny’s story that will surprise people? Plenty.

Because I tell the story of his life from my own little boy’s view of it, the audience gets to see The Wild One from behind the curtain, as not only the first local megastar they’d ever known, but also as a son and a father and a brother and an uncle, a man whose love of family and whose hunger for recognition were the driving forces of all his passion and success.

Did you feel pressured to go into law and at what point did your realise entertainment was your true calling? It wasn’t pressure as much as simply a natural pull. Law was the family trade, and both my brothers went through law before I did. But I always knew

that the law would only ever be one aspect of my life, and if you’re born a wolf, it’s very hard to be a lamb forever. So entertainment was always a part of my life.

You clearly put a lot of yourself into the show (and into all your endeavours) – are you a bit of a perfectionist who pushes yourself too hard at times? I certainly don’t feel comfortable with giving less than 100 per cent of my efforts to any job I do. After all, the audience doesn’t give less than 100 per cent of the ticket price, do they? I wouldn’t say I’m a perfectionist – in fact, often the gold can be found in the cracks between the rocks – but I do like to feel that I couldn’t have done any more to make a show great. And if that means that the tank runs dry at times, well that’s why I have good people around me who can make sure I stop and fill up now and then.

You’ve enjoyed a varied career in the spotlight – how does being on stage compare to your TV work and where do you feel most at home? I love television, just as Uncle John did, and I love live television in particular because it’s a direct and unfiltered line to the audience. But I love the stage most of all, because what you see on stage is me, no editor, no responsibilities to the advertisers, no commercial selfcensorship, just the raw real me. But even better than that, in a live stage show, the audience becomes a part of the show: their reactions, their energy become the fuel for the show and can change the show from night to night. In essence, the show becomes a joint effort between the audience and myself, which makes each show something unique.

ith ginger fur, a cheeky demeanour and an insatiable desire to please, Dee is one special puppy.

The ginger labrador is Vision Australia puppy instructor Brendan Ainsworth’s latest student, and she is one of the few who have been raised and trained here on the Sunshine Coast.

Dee is being taught the fine art of being a seeing eye dog and is set to be paired up with her future Brisbane owner at the start of next month.

Mr Ainsworth, who works from the Victoria-based organisation’s Maroochydore office, has been training puppies to assist people with low vision or blindness for the past 20 years. The past four years have been with Vision Australia.

Not every puppy that enters the training program makes the cut, with high standards in place to ensure dogs won’t be distracted by other dogs, people in the street and even food lying around.

Mr Ainsworth says that when the dogs are working, they need to have a steely determination and single-minded focus to locate their objective, which could be an item around the home, a pedestrian crossing if out for a walk or escalators if in a building.

Puppies that are a little too excitable, or that get stressed while working, are released from the program and find new homes as

“She’s very confident and loves working,” Mr Ainsworth says. “Whenever she successfully completes a task in training, she

looks at me with a wagging tail and is so proud, like she’s saying ‘I did it. I did it’.

“Avoiding obstacles is a big thing the dogs learn. It’s self-preservation for them to avoid things on their left side, so we have to show them how to allow space for someone

Seeing Eye Dogs Sunshine Coast puppy development trainer Tracey Bashford says the journey from playful puppy to working dog takes about two years, and the first step is being placed with a volunteer puppy carer.

“Puppies need carers from eight weeks of age until they are about 12 to 15 months of age, and we currently have pups that are ready to go to homes straight away, with

other litters ready to go to homes throughout the year,” she says.

“We especially need full-time carers to have the pup until they enter their formal training. We are also on the lookout for temporary foster homes for when the regular carers may go away for a short period.

“Another option is boarding an adult training dog. The dogs require housing weeknight evenings and on the weekends.

They are picked up weekdays in the morning [by Mr Ainsworth] and dropped off in the afternoon.”

Carers will ideally be located in the Buderim, Maroochydore, Mountain Creek areas. Mr Ainsworth says connecting dogs with their new owners is the most rewarding part of his job.

“It’s life-changing for people. It gives them more independence; they’ve got a living being that is now a part of their life for companionship and support,” he says.

“For me, it’s job satisfaction at its finest, but we simply can’t do this without the help of puppy raisers and carers.”

There are, of course, some requirements to becoming a carer, including having a fully fenced property and allowing the dog to live and sleep inside.

Coast teen’s game changer A Sunshine Coast teen has raised thousands of dollars for Rural Aid thanks to his entrepreneurial drive. WORDS: Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane.

15-year-old has raised enough money to buy hundreds of bales of hay for drought-stricken farmers by combining his love of electronics with an entrepreneurial flair.

Sam Pilgrim has raised more than $3000 for Rural Aid’s Buy a Bale program after

repairing, installing and managing arcade games at The Wharf Mooloolaba.

The idea struck 18 months ago, and Sam persuaded his father, Philip, to help him buy a second-hand machine so he could ‘tinker’ and repair it.

Mr Pilgrim says Sam has developed a real

interest in arcade games and used pocket money and asked for his Christmas present early to make the first purchase.

“Sam was really keen and has always been interested in how things work and fixing them, and it was a great opportunity to teach him about business so I put together a spreadsheet for him to monitor expenses and income and it has grown from there,” he says.

Sam went on to buy a second machine and both were installed rent free at The Wharf Mooloolaba. He volunteers his time checking and restocking the machines each week, allowing all profits go to Rural Aid. Sam says he has been interested in electronics for as long as he can remember.

“It was really hard to find out how to fix [the claw machines], but I watched some videos online and then just tried different things until all the components were working properly,” he says.

“We initially got the second machine so we could use parts for the first, but then I got them both working.”

Sam says there are settings on the machines that make it more difficult to win, but he likes to keep them “really fair” so people have more chance of a win.

“I love going down and watching people win – I know I’ve helped make their day,” he says.

“To know that I have helped buy

hundreds of bales is really awesome – and all from just two machines.”

The Wharf Mooloolaba co-owner Dirk Long says as soon as he heard about Sam’s idea to use the machines to raise money for drought relief, he offered The Wharf as a location.

“Coming from a rural background, I know the challenges producers face, and how those challenges become even worse with prolonged drought,” he says.

Rural Aid donor relations manager Jason Castle says Sam’s donation and the story behind it are awesome.

“Stories like Sam’s, where kids are putting in the hard work to help producers, really puts a smile on our dials,” Mr Castle says. “It’s great for us and for the farmers who benefit, not only from the hundreds of bales Sam’s donations have funded but also by knowing that people on the Coast are supporting them.

“I used to play at The Wharf on weekends and the Coast is such a great environment, with higher-than-average rainfall so it’s often hard for people to believe that just an hour-and-a-half west people are really struggling because of the drought.”

Airport takes off From humble beginnings, the region’s airport has come a long way.

T

he Sunshine Coast moved into the jet age in April 1984 when an Air New South Wales Fokker Fellowship F-28 touched down at Maroochy Airport. The flight from Sydney had taken about 85 minutes, slicing almost an hour off the time taken by its predecessor, the F-27 turboprop.

East West Airlines had been operating out of Maroochy Airport since 1970, but a pilot strike robbed it of the honour of bringing the first jet into the region, and it landed a day

later. The East West boss declared: “We may have the second jet on the tarmac, but we don’t intend to run second much longer. East West and the tourist industry on the Sunshine Coast have developed hand in hand.”

Progressively known as Maroochy Airport, Maroochydore Airport and finally – and logically – Sunshine Coast Airport, it has jets coming and going all day and welcomes more than a million passengers a year.

Its story began in 1958, when Dave Low, who was both Maroochy Shire Council

chairman and the Member for the state seat of Cooroora, organised a retinue to accompany him to inspect land for an airport.

Surveyor Fred Murray described the mission to get there: “At that time there was no bridge over the Maroochy River at Bli Bli so we parked our car on the western side of the river and rowed a boat across.”

They were met by a local farmer with his Massey Ferguson tractor and trailer and taken to the aerodrome site through patches of sugar cane, dense tea-tree scrub and equally dense swarms of mosquitoes and sandflies.

“We ate our lunch on the sand dunes looking out to Old Woman Island with not a soul in sight. It was a rare day when a lone four-wheel-drive Land Rover made contact with us by coming south from Coolum,” he wrote in his memoir. “I signed the survey plan which marked the boundaries of the airport on December 27, 1958.”

The Maroochy Airport opened with great fanfare on August 12, 1961, five years before the North Coast became the Sunshine Coast.

And it has been all up since then.

On December 6, 1979, Murray returned, this time as a Maroochy Shire councillor, for

the opening of a new terminal building.

Architect-designed to “blend with our coastal features” it was considered very modern by 1979 standards and was long overdue. Then came the game changer – the arrival of jet aircraft. Maroochy council spent $2 million laying 15,000 tonnes of asphalt to extend the north-south runway.

The terminal was soon inadequate and was upgraded “to provide an exciting gateway experience to passengers arriving on the Sunshine Coast” in 1990.

A year later, Murray told a Tourism Sunshine Coast meeting it was time to plan for a second runway, saying if an “open skies policy was to become a reality, a second runway should be built within the next few years”. He recommended, unsuccessfully, that land for an east-west runway be acquired. Instead, the existing runway was upgraded in 1993 to cater for larger Boeing 737 and Airbus 320 jets.

The terminal was given another major upgrade in 1997, almost trebling its size and giving air travellers a “tropical experience” on arrival.

A new north-west/south-east runway due to open next year is set to bring the Coast into another new era, making direct flights to southeast Asia, China and Hawaii possible.

They were surely on the money in 1983, when it was predicted “jet aircraft will put the region closer to the rest of the world”.

Get Ready Queensland Week is underway, reminding us to be prepared in the event of extreme weather or a natural disaster.

n extended period of extremely dry conditions and wild winds led to a ferocious early start to the annual bushfire season, with a number of homes threatened around Peregian Springs and numerous fires burning throughout the hinterland in September.

All of this week, the Queensland Government, Sunshine Coast Council and emergency services have banded together for Get Ready Queensland week, aimed at preparing us for bushires, flooding and other natural disasters.

Sunshine Coast Council’s disaster management coordinator Cathy Buck says the ember storm that swirled around Peregian Beach is a reminder to Coast residents that anything can happen and it’s best to be prepared in advance.

“The firefighters I’ve spoken to have never seen anything like that ember storm, plenty of blazes of course, but this was definitely unique activity for the Sunshine Coast,” she says.

“It was so sudden that the only action was for people to evacuate in that case, but as a general rule we find more people who have experienced fires elsewhere and then moved to the Coast are very diligent with fire evacuation plans. The Peregian fires have served as a timely reminder to all of us not to become complacent and to remain diligent about being prepared.”

The Peregian fires started on September 9 and burned for two days, resulting in hundreds of residents being evacuated from the area. One home was completely lost in the ember storm, another was severely damaged and large portions of bushland were destroyed.

A 14-year-old Peregian Springs boy and a 15-year-old Coolum Beach girl were charged with endangering particular property by fire on September 12. The following day, Queensland Fire and Emergency Services were battling 70 fires across the state.

The aftermath of the Peregian fires hinterland already this season, with many in inaccessible bushland that become natural firebreaks. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We activated the local disaster management group for the Peregian fires and over three days we would have had upwards of 150 to 200 personnel coming through the centre for shifts because we operate 24/7 and thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s just our local disaster group. We also were in touch with outreach organisations like Lifeline and Red Cross who donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t necessarily come into our centres, but who head to the evacuation centres to assist people directly,â&#x20AC;? Ms Buck says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;All of the agencies work together like one big machine.

Everyone has a specific role to make sure that people are kept safe and looked after in social and emotional aspects as well.â&#x20AC;?

The Bureau of Meteorologyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s (BOM) long-term predictions show there wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be any substantial rainfall until January 2020, leaving the region vulnerable to more bushfires. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We are very well prepared and we are taking no chances.

We do need to look at how these fires are staring. Often it is the result of people doing activities that inadvertently cause fires,

like mowing the lawns. Sometimes mowing can cause a little spark and in times of high winds and dry weather, thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s all it takes to start a fire,â&#x20AC;? she says.

The past week has been all about creating â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;what ifâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; plans. â&#x20AC;&#x153;If you have to leave immediately, your evacuation pack should be ready to go and contain three days worth of what you need to survive. Food, water, certainly medication if you regularly take any, and any important documents. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s also a good idea to throw in spare clothes too,â&#x20AC;? she says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;First and foremost is the safety of you, your family and your pets. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s also a good idea to connect with your neighbours, particularly elderly neighbours who might not be able to prepare their own evacuation kits and procedures.â&#x20AC;?

Some people can experience anxiety when talking about the â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;what ifsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;, however they are necessary conversations. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Communicating to kids or those who are anxious why it is important to be prepared will help, especially if you put it in the context of how you would be ready and not have to panic if an alarm was sounded and you had to leave quickly,â&#x20AC;? she says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;This way, everyone is familiar with where to go, what to do and where to find your emergency evacuation kit.â&#x20AC;?

Ms Buck says itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s also important not to rely on social media for any disaster information or updates and rather to download the Sunshine Coast Councilâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Disaster Hub app, follow the BOM or Queensland Fire and Emergency Service websites or tune into ABC radio. Remember, if you spot active fire or feel your property is under threat, call Triple Zero (000) immediately.

DAWN OF A NEW DECADE

MIDDLE GROUND

Sami Muirhead reflects on the past decade as we edge closer to 2020 and says now more than ever, we should embrace celebrate our wins.

Richard O’Leary had a tense relationship with his father for many years, until they joined forces on a job recently that forged a new feeling.

Y

ou know what? You should just go and do whatever you have been putting off. You should buy whatever it is you have been lusting after. Life is short. You should tell that person in your life you love them.

I always find an excuse to buy that extra handbag/have that extra drink/splurge on that holiday. I could convince an Eskimo to buy an ice-cream shop in the northernmost corner of the North Pole when it comes to buying stuff or going on adventures.

We only have two months left of living in this decade – 2020 is knocking on the door, baby. We will refer to the next decade as the ’20s and I am looking forward to it.

The years from 2010 to 2020 have been the best decade of my life, despite gaining more wrinkles and more kilograms. I also gained a husband, three children who are the loves of my life, and found a job where I work with the best people in the world. My managers are progressive and caring and my radio partner is a legend.

I met Hugh Jackman. He was a dream.

My parents and my elderly dogs are still alive and I have a gorgeous set of friends. I have a whole new unexpected set of friends thanks to my kids starting school. I really like my hair on a good day. I live in the place where I grew up and it gives me comfort to see my kids play on the same beaches.

Mind you, we have our battles as everyone does. And the last few years have been tough in parts due to the health of one

of our kids and the stress of juggling work and play and family. But our motto this year has been ‘celebrate the wins’. We have tried to worry less about mortgages and our kids’ futures and all the stuff we are not getting done. We have tried to praise ourselves when we do cook a healthy meal or when we do make it to the school assembly. And just like that, our kids will continue to grow up and we will be in 2020.

So here are a few accolades to celebrate the best of the decade. Best invention: on a very shallow level for me it has been the hair straightener that has managed to tame my crazy curls. Instagram has rocked my world.

I fell in love with John Wick at the movies. We all fell in love with the Hemsworth brothers.

Wills married Kate. Harry married Megs.

They had babies.

In the music world we sang along to Adele, Ed Sheeran, Pink and Pharrell Williams. Hipsters ruled supreme. Good facial hair became a must. Rosé wine made it to our cellars, as did craft beer. Serving any food on a paddle was cool and technology gave us watches that are phones and TVs that are really cheap. We had our first female Dr Who and Wonder Woman showed a new generation what a kick-arse girl is capable of achieving. Breaking Bad, Game Of Thrones and reality TV shows consumed our nights.

Netflix changed our lives. Maybe even more than my hair straightener. So enjoy the last two months of 2019 and bring on a new decade of life and celebrating the wins.

ome things just take time. Take my relationship with my father. To paraphrase an old Split Enz song, there’s always been a fraction too much friction.

Dad was a builder, he worked with his hands. I am a writer, I work with words.

Which is how he always wanted it. He didn’t want me to break my back to earn a living, like he had to.

After Year 12 many students do a gap year. I spent the three months between finishing exams and going to uni labouring for my dad. It was tough work in 40-degree heat. Just how he wanted it.

It pushed me.

I fantasied about shooting myself through my foot with a nail gun, so I could just take a break. One early start, unable to handle the day ahead I surreptitiously drank some syrup designed to make you throw up – it worked, and I vomited long and loud.

Once I finished heaving, Dad told me to get ready for work. I stayed home but I didn’t try that stunt again.

By the time I finished labouring I was stronger, physically and mentally. My work ethic was established and would serve me well for the decades to come.

It also taught me what I didn’t want to do, which encouraged me to try just a little harder when I went to uni and started work as a journalist.

Which was just how he wanted it.

It was a life lesson delivered on a

concrete slab and reinforced by heavy radiata house frames.

Which would have been fine if the story stopped there. But that’s how our relationship continued for the next 30 years – he was the master and I was the apprentice. He was the man and I was the child.

I don’t blame him. He may have wanted to teach me at times, but he had the patience of a doer rather than an explainer. And I was often a reluctant learner. Usually one of us

It was a life lesson delivered on a concrete slab… would say the wrong thing and dig that trench between us a little deeper.

But one day it changed.

We were getting rid of a concrete path at my place recently and his busted body could no longer take the lead. So, I spent two days on the jackhammer and crow bar and he would pick up the small jigsaw-puzzled blocks of concrete. We worked as a team. He helped me. I helped him. We finished without a cross word.

We’d removed a physical path and a mental roadblock.

He turned 75 earlier this week. Happy birthday, Dad.

IMPEACHMENT: HOW WILL MARKETS REACT?

T

he threat of impeachment has shadowed US president Donald Trump for most of his term in office. Recently, that threat moved a step closer to becoming reality after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced the House of Representatives (‘the House’) would move forward with an official impeachment inquiry.

The process is expected to take a number of months. Even if the House decides there is enough evidence to vote for impeachment, the move seems destined for defeat in the Senate given the upper house is currently controlled by the Republican Party.

US presidential impeachments are rare. Only three presidents have been

impeached by the House: Andrew Johnson (in 1868), Bill Clinton (in 1998) and Richard Nixon (in 1974). Of these, Johnson and Clinton were acquitted in the Senate, while Richard Nixon resigned.

Voter support for impeachment is low, despite a laundry list of allegations against the president.

In fact, his approval rating has risen from the lows of January 2018. Financial market reaction to the latest inquiry has

“Voter support for impeachment is low, despite a laundry list of allegations” been muted for two reasons: first, the general sentiment is that a Republicancontrolled Senate will block a conviction against one of its own, and second, previous experience suggests that political turmoil is secondary to economic conditions at the time of the impeachment proceedings.

For example, in Nixon’s case, the equity market suffered significant declines due to an oil price shock that sent the US economy into stagflation, whereas the market was largely unfazed by Clinton’s impeachment, instead lifting on positive momentum in the US economy and a boom in dot-com companies.

On this occasion, Trump is dealing with China, which may prefer to delay a resolution to the trade crisis in the hope that it puts more pressure on the US

economy and scuttles Trump’s chances of retaining the presidency in the 2020 elections.

How will this play out in markets and the economy? Watch this space.

We based ourselves at the ideally-located and stylish Sage Hotel, and with a rare 24 child-free hours in front of us, we didn’t waste a second. Checked in, luggage stored away, we emerged from the contemporary lobby on to the sun-drenched sidewalk of James Street.

What ensued was a weekend of shopping, eating and taking in the city vibe.

SUNSHINE COAST ARTIST SHARES HIS BEAUTIFUL MESS Soulful, engaging and enigmatic are words used to describe Sunshine Coast artist Toby Robinson, aka TOBiAS. Two decades of performing on the international stage has cemented his reputation as one of Australia’s leading indie/folk pop artists, playing alongside Missy Higgins, Jen Cloher, Archie Roach and Fanny Lumsden.

TOBiAS has just released the first single from his forthcoming untitled album. Beautiful Mess is a song he wrote after a girl at Woodford Folk Festival told him, “you’re a beautiful mess, but I want you”. “How we desire the need for affection but sometimes are drawn into dysfunctional entanglements was an interesting concept,” he says.

Beautiful Mess was recorded at Heliport Studios on the Sunshine Coast and TOBiAS says his musical journey has evolved on every studio album he has created so far. This is his third release.

he home exchange – not to be confused with house sitting – engages people of all ages, but is particularly well suited to retirees on moderate budgets with a flexible schedule and a yen to travel. What’s more, older people rate highly with home exchange agencies because they are usually reliable, clean, tidy and don’t indulge in wild parties that upset the neighbours.

Beyond the obvious advantages of free

accommodation and the comforts and conveniences of a private home, swapping your house or apartment with carefully matched peers can give you the chance to immerse yourself in another culture.

Some travellers who happily reduce accommodation costs by ‘sitting’ other people’s homes are intimidated by the idea of exchanging their own.

Couple Joe and Nell Lidgard arranged a house swap with people in Perth and were let

down at the last minute. Non-refundable air fares meant they still had to make the trip and were forced to pay for accommodation.

“It didn’t put us off the idea though,” says Joe. “Only the next time we went through an established agency, which lowers the risk a bit.”

Home exchange agencies have been around for at least 30 years and are proliferating to meet the demand. They have attractive websites listing specialised home

Transparency and honesty are an important factor in home exchange and you need to check your exchange partners very carefully before committing. On the other hand, if you have a beloved pooch and they have a spoiled cat it could be a win-win situation all round.

Some home exchange agencies include insurance in the membership fee but this only reimburses air fare, accommodation and car rental costs should a cancellation occur.

Statistically, however, damage and theft are rare with home exchanges. The most likely problem is last-minute cancellations by one of the participants. This is just one reason why it’s important to arrange home swaps through an agency with a good track record, which vets, verifies and rates its participants – and preferably offers a written contract.

There are at least 70 from which to choose, most offering much the same service with new platforms evolving all the time.

For example, industry giant HomeExchange recently introduced its flexible ‘Balloon’ option, which extends the traditional one-on-one swap to a wider group of exchanges.

It’s worth noting that house swapping does not need to be simultaneous: for example, you stay in your exchange partner’s home at a time that suits you and they stay in yours at another time that suits them – an arrangement that is, of course, easier with second or holiday homes.

Brisbane’s Ainslie Waldron is the doyenne of home exchange in southeast Queensland.

She and her partner Mike have regularly swapped their second home on Macleay Island for accommodation, staying in everything from a Swiss mansion to a tiny but well-located apartment in Vienna. They even managed to find a suitable swap in Iceland.

Ms Waldron’s is a travel writer whose website myplaceforyours.com and blog ainslie.growingbolder.com are full of information about house swapping.

“It’s been a great adventure,” she says.

“And because of it we’ve made friends all over the world.”

HOUSE SWAP CHECK LIST Follow these essential rules when making your own home exchange: 1. PLAN AHEAD Plan six months to a year ahead.

2. PREPARE YOUR PROFILE Offer as much reassuring detail about yourself to the agency as possible to ensure a good fit. Take photos that reflect what your home is really like and be honest about your neighbourhood.

3. CONSIDER INSURANCE Especially to cover air fares and associated costs if there is a last-minute cancellation. If exchanging cars, make sure you have comprehensive car insurance.

4. AGREE ON BILL PAYMENTS Clarify expenses you and your exchange partner will be covering. Make it clear that extraordinary expenses incurred by the other partner, such as high phone bill, must be paid by them.

5. PROVIDE INSTRUCTIONS Leave detailed instructions about how your house works and who to contact in case of emergency.

NO REAL POWER IN THESE FLOWERS At the risk of sounding callous, I confess to being very cynical about the now-popular practice of laying flowers in public places every time something awful happens.

Once upon a time, flowers were placed at cenotaphs on Anzac Day and, even then, many came from the family garden.

Although a mass outpouring of public grief is unquestionably good business for florists, I am not convinced of its real value.

In my memory it began after the death of Diana, Princess of Wales in 1997, when hundreds of thousands of wreaths, posies and bouquets were stacked high and wide at the entrance to both her home at Kensington Palace and at nearby Buckingham Palace.

Mourners came from miles away to pay their respects. She was the People’s Princess and the people rallied and united in their grief.

Florist shops in the UK were stripped bare and Holland had a 25 per cent spike in orders.

It was said that the weight of bouquets was more than 10 tonnes and 60 million flowers blanketed the royal precincts. Volunteers later had to clear up the mess of decaying flowers, ribbons and cellophane wrap.

Although the Americans left some floral tributes in the days after the September 11 attacks in 2001, it was nowhere near the scale of the British outpouring.

In Australia, Martin Place in Sydney was

awash after the Lindt cafe siege in 2014.

Almost 100 volunteers had to rush to clear up the decaying blooms before the predicted rain arrived. Dreamworld was inundated by a sea of cellophane-wrapped tributes after the 2016 ride tragedy.

It can only be hoped that the families of those involved in tragedies of which the public has claimed ownership draw some comfort from shared grief and support.

But what about the little people – the woman who died at the hands of her husband and whose neighbours place flowers at the gate; the baby brutally murdered by those he trusted and whose memory is marked by a bouquet from strangers?

Where once we rallied around a family and baked a casserole, minded the children or offered some real, tangible help, now we simply buy a bunch of flowers.

There may be some public purpose in placing flowers at the spot where a car has crashed as a stark warning to take care, but leaving flowers for a stranger seems little more than virtue signalling.

It makes us feel good that we did something when touched by tragedy. Perhaps it makes us feel we are building up good karma and warding off something equally terrible happening to us. Most of the time though, we have done nothing at all except contribute to the waste and create a job for someone to clean up the detritus.

So, the answer is this – avoid the waste and the mess and make a donation to a children’s charity, a women’s refuge or a volunteer organisation. It’s more practical, less wasteful and can make you feel good knowing you have made a real contribution in a time of tragedy.

Awareness vital to recognise changes Being breast aware means being familiar with the normal look and feel of your breasts.

If you know what is normal for you, it is then easier for you to notice if there are any changes.

Take the time to get to know the normal look and feel of your breasts while showering or looking in the mirror.

It is never too early to start being breast aware and it’s important to maintain the habit even if you are having regular breast screens.

Changes to look for in your breast area include: a new lump or lumpiness; a change in the size or shape of your breast; changes to the nipple such as crusting, ulcers, redness or inversion; nipple discharge; changes in the skin such as redness or dimpling; and an unusual pain that doesn’t go away.

Most changes are not due to breast cancer, but it is important to check with your doctor.

If you are over 50, you should also have a breast screen every two years. Breast screens can detect changes in the breast well before a woman can notice or feel them.

I perform hundreds of knee-replacement surgeries every year, so I see first-hand just how important it is for people to take the right steps to recover.

The first tip to rehab after kneereplacement surgery is to use an ice compress. This method is crucial in reducing swelling and pain, which will ultimately increase movement of the knee. In my practice, we lend patients an ice machine following their surgery to encourage this.

Secondly, let your body recover and don’t overdo physiotherapy. All prescribed exercises should be done in short duration with more repetitions. Most people want to get back to normality as quickly as possible, but sometimes when they push themselves too hard, it can have the opposite effect.

In saying that, exercise is still paramount, so taking regular, short walks is one of the best ways to help your body return to normal function.

Where there’s a Will…(part 3) This is the third article in our series detailing steps you can take to reduce (or prevent) a challenge being made to your estate.

Any estate plan involves understanding the important distinction between ‘estate’ and ‘non-estate’ assets. Central to this is understanding that a person’s Will controls only assets held solely in their name at the date they pass away.

Given the proliferation of asset-holding strategies (such as companies, self-managed super funds and discretionary family trusts) sometimes the only assets controlled by a person’s Will are a surfboard and fishing rod.

Before any substantial assets are acquired, careful consideration needs to be given as to how you might want that asset dealt with on your death. Do you want it held in your own name or another structure?

By not owning the asset in your name, the size of your estate can be reduced. This can be important if there are any challenges anticipated from disgruntled family members. There are often a number of competing issues regarding the ownership of assets and they can range from asset protection and tax to estate planning.

It can be costly to ‘unwind’ structures, so it is important to deal with the ‘now’ but keep one eye on the horizon.

It’s pollen season For some of us spring means the beginning of a lot of sneezing and wheezing. Pollen in the air is a common trigger for people living with asthma and/or allergic rhinitis (hay fever) that can exacerbate their symptoms.

Almost one in five Australians suffer with allergic rhinitis and of those, 10 to 40 per cent also suffer with asthma. It is vital to know what your symptoms are and what your triggers are to successfully treat your condition or minimise symptoms.

Typical allergic symptoms include clear runny nose, sneezing and red and watery eyes. The most common symptoms of asthma are wheezing, a feeling of not being able to get enough air or being short of breath, tightness in the chest and coughing.

Asthma symptoms for some people can be also be seasonal. Regularly waking from asthma symptoms or using your reliever medication more than two to three times a week (except before exercise) indicates your asthma is poorly controlled and you need to talk with your health professional.

Because the symptoms of asthma and allergic rhinitis can overlap (and many people suffer with both), it’s important to get a correct diagnosis.

Partial dentures Partial dentures improve your smile by filling the gaps where natural teeth have been lost. They maintain an equilibrium in your mouth by sharing the workload when chewing, creating lip support and maintaining the positions of your natural teeth.

Partial dentures can be made from different materials.

An acrylic partial denture is generally the most cost-effective option. Additional teeth and clasps can be added when required.

A cobalt chrome partial denture uses a metal framework that is designed to be as thin as possible to ensure optimum comfort. Metal clasps can unfortunately be unsightly and adding teeth at a later stage can require soldering.

A flexible partial denture is made from nylon-based materials and clasps can be made to copy the colour of your gums or teeth. Adding teeth at a later stage can be difficult.

Nylon clasps can be added to most partial dentures to improve aesthetics.

Your dental prosthetist will discuss all these options with you and conduct an examination of your mouth to check that your teeth are healthy before treatment ensues.

2. Aromatherapy – mixing lavender oil into body lotion and applying to wrists and temples can be a calming influence.

3. Temperature control – make sure the bedroom isn’t too hot. A cooler room can allow for a blanket, and the weight of a blanket can help people feel safe and calm.

4. Avoid arguing – trust me, it won’t help and will delay you returning to sleep!

5. Check for pain, hunger or need for the bathroom – identify a legitimate cause of unrest and offer a solution.

6. Avoid medication – seek advice from a GP, but know that some medications can accelerate cognitive decline and make thing worse.

A good night’s sleep is a carer’s secret weapon! When you are rested you feel much more capable to tackle the day ahead and make it a good one!

DISCOVERING THE ART OF A HAPPY RETIREMENT It was love at first sight for Nature’s Edge Buderim resident Ann-Marie Granger when she first discovered the intricate art of Japanese brush painting more than 10 years ago, and she has been perfecting her craft ever since.

“The style of painting is very volatile,” she says. “The paper is very thin, so when you put a wet brush on it, it just explodes. You need to know where to place the brush and that’s where it becomes very technical. You spend the first 12 months just learning how to load the brush correctly so you get the right effects.”

As part of the lively arts and crafts community at the over-50s lifestyle community village, Ms Granger joined one of the regular art groups and says not only has she enjoyed honing her skills, but she has also formed many friendships along the way.

“We work on all sorts of mediums,” she says. “We do portraits or scenery with watercolour and it changes every week to keep everyone interested.

“It has allowed me to continue to practise my craft and I have really enjoyed the social aspect of it.”

More recently, Ms Granger has incorporated her love of the ancient art form to create stunning hand-painted silk scarves using French dye in a range of intense and vibrant colours. “The colour is so vibrant and alive,” she says.

Her beautiful scarves were one of the many items on sale at the hugely successful inaugural Nature’s Edge Buderim Arts & Crafts Expo last Saturday, where a great day was had by all.

I'm here to say that negative gearing is doomed, and Positive cash flow is King.

They head off to a seminar or speak to an advisor. They learn that some of the tax they are paying could be refunded back to their bank account. The socalled Property Gurus spruik about how the value of a house and land package could double over 7 years and the market will grow by 5% a year.What a load of garbage. Nobody has a crystal ball.

No way, this is old school and negative and in my opinion a big SPRUIK

House & Land Packages: Why I don’t Like them

It's a controversial call, but let me break it down for you.

The average negative gearing scenario happens something like this: Mr & Mrs Smith are making good money. They see their tax bill every year and it's a shock.. they're paying a lot. They really really dislike paying tax.

You totally dislike paying too much tax, so you get persuaded into buying a house and land package with just a 5% yield. Perhaps you'll get a rebate and pay down the debt, or draw some equity from the capital growth and pay down your personal home loan. They might even promise you a free car in the deal.

These fancy wealth plans get promoted and promises get made by the smooth-talking and potentially unqualified advisors. Most of these so-called advisors wear several caps and work under different ABN numbers and licenses that allow them to work in the unregulated new property market.

Evading compliance issues, some even promote themselves under a governing regulated membership.

There is a massive conflict of interest, be aware and ensure you do your homework before doing any business or investing with a company like this.

usiness leaders have welcomed a new report that identifies the Sunshine Coast region as having the strongest property market in Queensland.

The monthly Hotspotting report by respected property researcher Terry Ryder found that major infrastructure spending from the private and public sector had boosted the region’s economy, generating new jobs and economic activity.

Maroochydore Chamber of Commerce president Brendan Bathersby says the

report’s findings were not a surprise, with many operators reporting a lift in business in recent months.

“Maroochydore is seen as a place on the Sunshine Coast where things are happening,” he says.

“We have the new Maroochydore City Centre, where construction is underway on the first buildings, as well as the expansion of the Sunshine Coast Airport.

“Major investments like these not only buoys local business, but serves to attract top tier operators to our region.”

Businesses will now start to identify the Sunshine Coast as a place they want to operate their business or stage their next big event.”

SunCentral Maroochydore Chief Executive Officer John Knaggs says the new CBD is well placed to take advantage of national and international interest in the region.

“A number of significant developers have already recognised the Maroochydore CBD as the place to be for business on the Sunshine Coast,” Mr Knaggs says.

“Construction has started on the first commercial building by Evans Long, Sydney-based hotel investment and development firm Pro-Invest will soon commence a new Holiday Inn Express and Suites and Brisbane’s Habitat Development Group will start its $83-million mixed commercial and residential project in early 2020.

“There is strong focus on the new Maroochydore CBD and we expect that interest to continue to grow.”

PROPERTY INDUSTRY EXPERT APPOINTED TO SUNCENTRAL BOARD Property industry stalwart, Peter Sherrie has been appointed to the board of SunCentral Maroochydore.
