his week I was dealt a tough question. ‘What book changed my life?’

Reading has been a lifelong passion – a way to escape, a way to connect with characters and their various journeys; a way to experience the world differently. Books got me through my teen years and sparked my career.

So, what book changed my world? There was John Marsden’s Checkers, which I discovered during one of my bi-weekly visits to the town library. I was 11 or 12 and it moved and shocked me in a way that I’d never felt. It showed me how powerful words can be, the far-reaching effect politicians can have, how books spark emotion and encourage compassion. This book cemented my dream of becoming a writer.

Then there was The Complete Poems by William Blake. I was 14 and Blake’s The Sick Rose with its raw, dark and elusive words further fuelled my desire to pursue the written word. I read and re-read this poem. His prose introduced an entirely new context and style to my teen mind and sparked a love for literary works such as William Shakespeare’s complete works and classic novels such as The Great Gatsby and All Quiet on the Western Front. In adulthood, it is the incredibly real A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini that I return to time and time again.

This edition, we speak with Sunshine Coast identities about life lessons and the books that changed their lives. I hope you find plenty of inspiration. I know I did. Enjoy.

Leap of faith Actor Emm Wiseman talks to My Weekly Preview about life in LA, working with Dame Helen Mirren, and the importance of forging her own path.

E

mm Wiseman has the kind of luminous screen presence that can’t be taught. It’s a combination of natural acting ability, an ice-blue gaze that portrays both strength and vulnerability and that magical quality every actor wishes they had: charisma.

The former Sunshine Coast local took a giant leap in February this year, moving to Los Angeles, and in a short time has established herself as a new Australian talent to watch.

In her first feature film, the 2018 gothic thriller Winchester, she starred opposite Dame Helen Mirren. At 28, she’s starting later than most actors, but is quickly making an impact.

“To be able to work with Helen Mirren was

surreal,” she says. “For someone of her status and celebrity, she was so gracious and patient.

“I remember her saying to one of the directors after the first table reading, ‘you don’t have to worry about me. I will never be late.

You can always rely on me’. I think that set a real precedent for how I go about work. It’s about respect and professionalism and I think that’s what a lot of the Aussies in LA tend to have a lot of.

“I heard about Aussies doing well in LA when I was growing up but I thought it was a myth,” she adds. “I think there’s something about us, we’re a bit exotic even though we don’t see ourselves as exotic. Aussies come here to work and they work really hard.

“They’re really lovely about it most of the time, they’re welcoming and they enjoy doing the work, which I think is really well-received.”

Also in 2018, Ms Wiseman appeared in an award-winning Australian feature film called Celeste, gaining the attention of key industry insiders. “The producer Lizzette Atkins said in the audition room, ‘she’s like a young Nicole Kidman’,” she says. “Any little glimpse that you are going in the right direction is always validating. There are so many rejections that sometimes you can drive yourself a little crazy, thinking, what am I doing, what is this freaky thing I’ve decided to embark on? For someone to say something like that is so encouraging.”

Ms Wiseman was born in the US, spent her early years in South Africa and moved to Australia with her parents at the age of five.

The family moved to the Sunshine Coast when she was a teenager and she attended Sunshine Coast Grammar School. Her parents still live in Buderim and she considers it home.

“I am a Sunny Coast kid through and through,” she says. “It is one of the most beautiful places in the world. I just remember finishing school and we’d hop on the bus and go down to Mooloolaba Spit and get fish and chips. Those memories are the best.

“I was always a creative kid, but I never thought acting was a viable career choice until later on. My drama teacher Katie Livock took me under her wing and made the drama room a safe place for me to try and understand what was going on in my world at the time. It was kind of a tumultuous time and I really think it was from her seeing me and the struggles I was going through, and encouraging me to explore that in the drama room, that started my journey to where I am today.”

After school, Ms Wiseman moved to New South Wales to study, before landing a job in TV production. “One day I was sitting in the office looking out the window and I thought, this is not where I’m supposed to be. I’ve tried this, I’ve done the nine to five, but I’m not

going to do it anymore. In 2016 I got an agent and it kind of went from there. I think the naivete of not knowing how the industry worked helped, because there was no fear. I just put down a bunch of scenes of myself on camera with my friends and sent it to the top 10 agents in Australia.”

As fate would have it, she stood out from the crowd and won the role in Winchester.

After realising she had a real shot at an acting career, she sold her car and bought a one-way ticket to LA in February, only to immediately win two TV roles in Australia and be flown back. She’s currently appearing as Jules Jelly in the Channel 9 remake of Seachange and will appear in a new series called The Gloaming, due to air on Stan later this year.

Chatting to My Weekly Preview from her home in LA, sirens are blaring in the background and she’s up late preparing for auditions. Life in LA is faster than what she’s used to, but she’s settling in well. “I really love it here,” she says. “There’s something special that happens when different people from all walks of life come to the one place to create something. You find yourself meeting really interesting, passionate people who you would otherwise not get the chance to work with.

“Moving to LA was very impulsive. It happened very quickly but I’d been thinking about it for a long time. I was terrified. You have no idea what’s going to be on the other side of that flight.

“I did go completely out on a limb and against everybody’s advice. People were like, ‘what are you doing, this has come out of nowhere?’ They knew I was creative but it took me a really long time to admit to myself that if I didn’t try, I’d regret it. If for some reason another door opens, that’s great, but at least I was following a path that was my own.”

BOOKS THAT

CHANGED MY LIFE Compiled by Jemma Pearson.

Books have the power to educate, to inspire and even transform their readers’ lives.

They can make us forget our worries, they can inspire us to change, to think differently about how we view the world.

Ask any book lover about their favourite read, one that truly moved them, and you’ll probably see their face light up as they describe how the story stayed with them long after they had read the last word and turned the last page.

All book lovers have at least one. So we asked seven prominent Sunshine Coast residents about the books that changed them.

Hopefully they will inspire you too.

Cyndi O’Meara, Changing Habits founder Mutant Message Down Under by Marlo Morgan So many books have changed my life and the beliefs I hold when it comes to history, food, life and parenting. The most profound book I read was Mutant Message Down Under. I was in my late twenties. Even though I was brought up in Australia, I had little knowledge of the Australian Aboriginal people and their culture and life before European settlement.

This book, along with a more recent book, Dark Emu by Bruce Pascoe, showed me that throughout my Australian history lessons, I had been completely lied to about the culture and tradition of this amazing race. They were agriculturists and very specific about how they grew food, how they prepared it, the importance of food preparation and nutrition in addition to cultural healing and relationships.

These books encompassed traditional life, food, spirit and purpose and I find inspiration in both books every time I read them. They are books to read over again as you always find another gem to help you on life’s journey.

Chris Turner, SunnyKids founder and CEO Shelley’s Poetry and Prose At 13 years of age, I was in my first year of high school and having a hard time with a bully. For some reason he needed me to feel bad about myself so he could feel good about himself, and the way he went about that was to try and isolate me socially and make it hard for others to be friends with me, and if they did then he’d set about isolating them too.

The book had a poem in it called Ozymandias: “I met a traveller from an antique land, Who said – Two vast and trunkless legs of stone Stand in the desert. Near them, on the sand, Half sunk a shattered visage lies, whose frown, And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command, Tell that its sculptor well those passions read Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things, The hand that mocked them, and the heart that fed; And on the pedestal, these words appear: My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings; Look on my Works, ye Mighty, and despair!

Nothing beside remains. Round the decay Of that colossal Wreck, boundless and bare The lone and level sands stretch far away.”

A teacher who probably knew what the bully was up

to used the poem to talk about why some people feel the need to make other people think they are powerful.

He talked about how we’re all powerful if we stick together and work together and that if we ever find ourselves needing to convince others we are powerful then we’re on the wrong path. He showed us the king’s power was illusory and worth nothing more than the endless sand that surrounded his broken down statue. To me this said that no matter how big and powerful the bully seemed now, he wouldn’t be that way forever, and the rest of the class understood the message too.

Suddenly the bully’s power was little more than that of the long forgotten king’s, and in our minds the bully became no different to the rest of us.

I also learned that a poem in the hands of a thoughtful teacher can change a struggling child’s life forever.

That lesson led me years later to work with Australian poet Rupert McCall and local author Angela Bueti to create a series of poems and stories that more than 500,000 kids across Australia read on Remembrance Day – with the message that dealing with bullies is best done by all of us having the courage to stick together even when people who seem more powerful than us as individuals are trying to get us to treat someone badly. myweeklypreview.com.au

I was around 30 years old when I discovered Anita’s book in the early 2000s. I was a relatively new business owner. Anita was the founder of The Body Shop and a leader and entrepreneur who was well ahead of her time. She was one of the world’s most outspoken, successful and controversial business women with a flair for leadership, community and team spirit.

Anita struggled long and hard to make The Body Shop the world-renowned business it is today, and Business as Unusual follows the story of how this unfolded. Her passion, purpose and focus without a doubt were the keys to her success.

This book inspired me to work hard and take on a second travel centre. I wanted to shoot for the stars, build my own empire and follow in her footsteps. It’s a book I still re-read every so often and is as relevant today as it was then. In fact, today it would probably be considered quite mainstream, whereas 15 years ago it was a book like no other in the marketplace.

Elaine Jobson, JETTS Fitness CEO Awaken the Giant Within by Anthony Robbins I remember the day my boss at the time gave me a copy of Awaken the Giant Within.

I was 21 years old and fresh into my first sales role in a start-up gym business. My boss was only 26 and a difficult man to work for. He was an entrepreneur with high expectations. He insisted that all his staff read the book and he wasn’t a man you wanted to upset, so I sat down and read it cover to cover over a weekend.

Until I read the book I had never heard about the science of NLP (neuro-linguistic programming). This book sparked a new passion in me that I recognise now as the key to unlocking my own personal development. I realised I hadn’t been purposeful in setting my goals or charting my own path in life. I had let other people negativity influence my own thinking; this book changed everything for me. It gave me the tools to master my mind and to hone the skill of using language in a way to influence others.

It was the summer of 1980. I was seven years old and collected Smurfs and desperately wanted a Cabbage Patch Kid and white roller skates with red wheels. I read dozens of books that holiday and it was all thanks to my grandmother.

As soon as I finished a book my gran would buy me another book. I found this terribly exciting. And so it became the summer of reading as we caught a bus to Chermside shopping centre every few days for the sole purpose of buying me a new book. I felt like royalty.

Steven Lang, author and Outspoken Maleny festival director The Adventures of Augie March by Saul Bellow This is the story of Augie March, the son of poor Russian immigrants in Chicago in the early part of the last century. It’s a tour de force. One of the keys to my fascination with this book is in the quote: “A man’s character is his fate…”

At one point Augie makes money by stealing books for university students. He hasn’t gone to university, but he reads the books before handing them over and thus gives himself an eclectic education. The novel is full of references to the ancient Greeks, to philosophers, scientists, great writers.

I read the book in the ‘80s, in love with Bellow’s extraordinary facility with words, but I didn’t know who these people were. I wanted to be a writer but I was working as a builder. I hadn’t gone to university. I’d never heard of Heraclitus, Alcibiades, Themistocles or any of them. The novel made me want to know. I applied to go to Macquarie University and my life was never the same.

I could not get enough of Enid Blyton’s The Famous Five and The Faraway Tree series. I devoured Naughty Amelia Jane stories and I just kept reading that holiday in my happy world. I also read Charlotte’s Web that summer and was so incredibly sad when the mummy spider died. It taught me about death and loyalty.

But the book that rocked me to my core was The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe.

The characters took me to another world with them in a way no other book ever had and few have since. I spent all my waking

A common phrase I heard a lot during a recent trip to India was “our health is our wealth” so the first book I’d like to mention is by The Telomere Effect: Living Younger, Healthier, Longer. It’s full of practical science-based insights that are applicable to people of any age, but particularly as we grow older.

The second book is The Rise of Superman and again draws on experiences of peak human performance, specifically in the area of extreme sports where all too often failure is rewarded with death.

hours wondering what was really happening in the magical white world of Narnia. It was the first book that deeply explored death and friendships and honesty. Perhaps I just loved the total escapism of the plot and the rich characters. I loved Aslan the lion with all my heart.

I do know whatever life has thrown me in the darkest of times I have always gone back to books as my base to calm me and to escape into another world with a cup of tea.

I will always be grateful to my grandmother for the gift of loving books.

The Sunshine Coast knows the story of little Finn Smith (pictured with Sarah Coureas and Jason Smith) – the 13-month-old boy who lost his hands and feet in 2013 to meningococcal septicaemia. Sepsis, as it is more commonly known, is one of the most common causes of death among Australian children. On September 13, World Sepsis Day, Finn’s mum Sarah Coureas spoke to a room of 800 people at Wishlist’s Spring Carnival to raise awareness and money for Sepsis research on the Sunshine Coast. The event raised a record $214,743. Wishlist and the Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service’s Study, Education, Research Trust fund (SERTF) announced their commitment to direct close to $90,000 to important sepsis research. The funding will allow the Sunshine Coast University Hospital’s (SCUH) paediatric intensive care specialist Dr Paula Lister to conduct two sepsis-related projects that will change the way the common disease is diagnosed and treated.

ComLink has been a fixture on the Sunshine Coast since 1987 and the community organisation is set to move into new headquarters in the new Kawana town centre in late 2020. The five-storey project, which has been called The Vitality Village, covers almost 4000 metres-squared of commercial space and will include a food and beverage outlet as well as space dedicated to ancillary health care services that ComLink offers to clients. ComLink CEO Feda Adra says they generated $14.9 million in revenue in the 2017–18 financial year and the new venue will signal an exciting new stage for service delivery.

A Buderim volunteer helping drive the expansion of inclusive sport on the Sunshine Coast to encourage more social interaction between able-bodied people and those with disabilities has become a USC Honorary Senior Fellow. Suncoast Spinners Wheelchair Basketball Club secretary Sharon Hill received the honorary award at a USC Sunshine Coast graduation ceremony at 10am on September 27. USC Vice-Chancellor Professor Greg Hill says Ms Hill has tripled the club’s membership and created opportunities to employ people with disabilities for programs such as coaching local school children to play wheelchair basketball, irrespective of their abilities.

The Sunshine Coast Airport has been confirmed as the fastest growing airport in the country for the 2018/19 financial year, according to results released by Bureau of Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Economics. The BITRE results are calculated by comparing the top 20 growing airports in Australia, with Hobart and Mackay coming in second and third on the list. At 5.8 per cent growth year on year, Sunshine Coast Airport outpaced the national airport average growth rate of 1.1 per cent. The results are backed up by a record numbers of passengers for the month of July 2019, at almost 120,000 passengers.

Rock solid The Baby Animals are heading back to the Coast as part of the Caloundra Music Festival line-up. WORDS: Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane.

E

very single Baby Animals gig is unique, which is a huge feat for a band that’s performed thousands of gigs since forming in 1989.

Guitarist Dave Leslie says they will often improvise on stage, “running on instinct and letting [the music] take us wherever it wants to go. It keeps us as well as our fans on their toes a little bit and while they often work, other times they fail spectacularly. We love that element of risk and it gives us a chance to end every night with something unique rather than the same stuff night after night.

“When we go on tour, the improv can become its own piece of music and just evolves. It becomes a song that writes itself on the fly and that’s an exciting way to end a gig.”

Mr Leslie, frontwoman Suze DeMarchi, drummer Mick Skelton and bass guitarist Dario Bortolin will perform at the Caloundra Music Festival for the fifth time since 2014, a

gig Mr Leslie describes as a “good hang”.

“The weather is always so beautiful and we get a chance to hang out with not only our fans, but other musos as well that we usually don’t get the chance to catch up with socially because everyone is so busy,” he says. “That festival is so well run and playing to a sea of smiling faces at a venue that is jam-packed with music lovers is always awesome.”

Ms DeMarchi and Mr Leslie have been creating music together for three decades and while there are bigger gaps between tours now, the recent release of their greatest hits album sparked the latest influx of touring, which Mr Leslie says he misses.

“There is an incredible dynamic with the band and whenever I sit in a room with Suze, I’m still knocked out by her talent when she starts to sing. She has such an amazing voice and when you are together all the time you can take it for granted,” he says.

“The time we have apart makes us miss each other and then when we jump back into being a band, it’s all good fun. I always feel blessed when we get a chance to play.”

There’s no doubt that Baby Animals classics like Rush You and One Word continue to have people singing at the top of their lungs. Mr Leslie says they will always be timeless for him.

“I’ve spoken with guys in other bands and they sometimes lament, ‘if I had I known I was going to spend the rest of my life paying this song…’ but that has never happened for me,” he says. “Every song has its own amazing elements as well as challenges and that means we have to bring our A game to every gig.”

The magic in the studio is also something Mr Leslie thrives on.

“There have been moments where we are recording and are listening back after putting a part down, and Suze has tears in her eyes.

That’s when we know we are onto something special and those moments are worth all the hardship and all the hard stuff,” he says.

“We’re in writing mode at the moment, kissing a lot of frogs trying to find a handsome prince. We are sifting through and developing ideas. We’d like to do an album in the near future.”

Those who can’t wait for the latest album can get their Baby Animals fix at the Caloundra Music Festival. The band will perform at 6.45pm on October 6 at the Kings Beach Soul Stage. Tickets to the festival, which runs from October 4 to October 7, are available at caloundramusicfestival.com.

Up for the challenge The Sunshine Coast will be well represented at the International Surf Rescue Challenge in South Africa. WORDS: Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane.

A

strong contingent of Sunshine Coast surf lifesaving athletes is heading over to South Africa to represent Australia at the International Surf Rescue Challenge.

Among them is 16-year-old Tayla Halliday, whose inclusion in the team is another milestone for what has been an incredible few years in the sport for the Alexandra Headland teen.

The Australian Life Saving Team will arrive in Durban on Wednesday to begin to

prepare for the three-day tournament from September 28 to October 2, which includes the 2019 International Surf Rescue Challenge Trophy, 2019 Tri-Nations Trophy (NZ and South Africa), and the 2019 Trans-Tasman Challenge Trophy against New Zealand.

Although Miss Halliday has become a force to be reckoned with in the oceans around Australia, this will be her first time competing abroad.

“I’m both nervous and excited, because it’s an honour to represent your country and

I get to do that for the first time, but there’s also some pressure that comes from racing for your country,” she tells My Weekly Preview.

Miss Halliday was an obvious choice for team selectors after claiming four gold, two silver and one bronze in the under-15 category at the 2018 Australian Surf Lifesaving Championships. She also won two gold, two silver and one bronze at this year’s national competition.

The Sunshine Coast Grammar School student was also named the 2018 Queensland and Sunshine Coast Surf Life Saving Athlete of the Year and in March was the youngest competitor in the IronWoman opens qualifier.

“I will be entering an Iron over in South Africa – it will be on the Wednesday after the three-day competition,” Miss Halliday says.

“There’s quite a big time difference, so we will be spending a few days adjusting to that and checking out the beach conditions so we are ready to race on the weekend.”

Members of the team will be put through their paces in the board, ski, swim and Iron events as individuals and board rescue, board, ski and ocean relays, swim team, and rescue in teams.

Miss Halliday joined Nippers as an under-six and a few years later a passion for surf lifesaving was ignited in her.

“It’s not just a sport, we are saving lives as well, so I really love the fact I can volunteer

and help out the community as well as compete in something on the ocean,” she says. “The ocean changes every day and I’ve always been someone who loves the beach and I’ve been around it since I was little.

Being able to compete in the ocean as well is awesome.”

Seven of the 12 members of the youth team are from the Sunshine Coast. Miss Halliday is pumped to give it her all at the international competition before turning her focus onto the Coolangatta Gold under-19 short course and then the 2020 state and national surf life saving titles.

“I want to represent the country the best that I can and try to beat New Zealand – that’s what everyone says to us,” she quips.

The Sunshine Coast Screen Collective formed in August last year and the board is actively working towards creating a strategic and business plan to establish opportunities for a sustainable screen industry.

President Livia Hanich says the first step was to create an online resource directory so people looking to hire anyone with industry skills has an easy one-stop shop to visit.

“The region is so spread out that even now when we have networking events and workshops, there are professionals from one end of the Coast who are meeting others from the other end for the very first time,” she says.

“Connection and collaboration through networking will be one of the strongest ways

for us to grow this industry. The bigger picture of creating this connectivity within the region is that those outside the region will become more aware of what is available to them here and that would incentivise them to come here and produce content on the Sunshine Coast.”

Ms Hanich says the “blue sky vision” is to establish such a strong industry in the region that interstate and international production teams will see the value of bringing their large-scale projects to the Coast.

“So many creatives like myself choose to live in the region for a lifestyle choice and it would be incredible to be able to live in a this fantastically beautiful part of the work and still work in our chosen profession,” she says.

“We have world-class talent here and we can offer so much from a locations perspective, if we could complement that with sound stages and other infrastructure in the future, a much wider variety of story content could be produced here year-round.”

Ms Hanich is an award-winning TV producer who lived in Los Angeles for 25 years and worked with the likes of Aaron Spelling, Darren Star and Steven Spielberg.

She and her family moved to the Sunshine Coast for a more level lifestyle and Ms Hanich now often travels for her work.

here was a buzz of activity and excitement at Venue 114 earlier this month as more than 300 Year 5 to 8 students from across the region came together for Sunshine Coast Council’s Kids in Action conference.

Students gathered to share experiences and learnings with a common goal to help save the Sunshine Coast’s spectacular environment.

This year, students from 23 schools came together for the conference, which is part of the National Kids Teaching Kids Week, where students become the teachers, sharing the environmental projects they have been working on for the past few terms.

Kids in Action aims to increase children’s environmental knowledge and understanding, while inspiring and

providing opportunities for positive environmental and sustainability action.

The 2019 Kids in Action theme was Connecting to Country: Celebrating nature’s icons, in recognition of the United Nations International Year of Indigenous Languages.

As a part of the program, Sunshine Coast Council Deputy Mayor Cr Tim Dwyer said students were asked to select a significant native species of flora or fauna as their school’s totem.

“Through working with Traditional Owners and learning from their Indigenous cultural and spiritual connections to Country, as well as scientific knowledge, the students have gained a deeper understanding of the role those species play in the broader ecosystem of our own backyards,” Cr Dwyer said.

The one-hour sessions will be held on Thursdays from 6am with classes kicking off on October 3 through to November 28.

“By learning about these species and how they fit together within the natural environment, our future generation now has vital information to help keep the Sunshine Coast a beautiful and naturally valuable place.”

Students selected species ranging from the cute and cuddly Gu’la (Kabi Kabi for koala), to the feathered Djandurr (Jinibara for black cockatoo), and the Pikki (Kabi Kabi for piccabeen palm) to Barnii (Jinibara for bunya pine).

They shared knowledge about their totem species through dance, visual arts, news report-style videos, yarning circles, interactive displays and scavenger hunts.

RIDE LIKE A GIRL IS A MUST-SEE

STREETS AHEAD

Sami Muirhead encourages everyone to see the new Australian film Ride Like a Girl, which is destined to become a classic.

On the chaotic roads of Bali, Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane learns a valuable lesson about staying calm.

P

lease go and see Ride Like A Girl at the movies. This Australian biopic is the true story of female jockey Michelle Payne winning the Melbourne Cup in 2015. It is brilliant, witty, heartbreakingly sad and pure Australian.

It tells the story of a woman smashing barriers in a man’s world of racing. It highlights the battles of an athlete who has to overcome a massive rehabilitation after nearly dying in a horse fall. It also tells the story of her brother Stevie, a young man with Down syndrome, who plays himself. What a refreshing example of highlighting abilities not disabilities.

Michelle is one of 10 kids and her dad Paddy (played by Sam Neill) raised his Catholic clan himself after Michelle’s mum was killed in a car accident when she was just six months old. Stevie stole our hearts in real life all those years ago and the big screen loves him. The movie documents his close bond with Michelle as her sibling and as her strapper. Stevie delivers hilarious lines with brilliant timing and his relationship with his sister is beautiful to witness.

The mastermind behind the movie is actor Rachel Griffiths. What a woman!

Rachel came into my work last week to chat about the movie she directed. I have not met such a special human being in a long time.

Rachel has acted with the most famous talent in the world, but is relishing her new role of directing.

After living for decades in the States, the

mum and her husband and three children are also happy to be back home. There are many subtle nods to her home country. The scenery is open wide plains with native trees reaching up to our blue skies and larrikins having a beer and a bet.

The Payne kids all show that grit and optimism that we are taught from the day we are born in The Lucky Country. Your children will love this movie, trust me. My eight-yearold daughter now wants to ride in The Melbourne Cup! The plot has a wedding, a funeral and plenty of laughs. Our Aussie movies need support to succeed. I recently chatted to Bryan Brown who is starring in and has financially backed Palm Beach with his director wife Rachel Ward. Bryan said the United States movie production companies are juggernauts and urged us to go and buy a ticket to an Aussie movie to keep the industry alive.

And if you are feeling patriotic and in the mood for a whole lot of cheeky fun, check out Muriel’s Wedding playing in Brisbane on stage. It will make you gasp in surprise. It is vibrant. It is rude. It is funny and sad. Rachel Griffiths played Muriel’s best friend maverick Rhonda in the original movie way back in 1994. Rachel continues to lead the way to show us all how to lead richer lives. Michelle Payne won our hearts the day she galloped up that straight and into the history books but Rachel Griffiths is every bit the trailblazer as well.

I

step into the heavy air, sticky with humidity, and climb into the back of one of the smallest minivans I’ve ever seen. It would easily be the same width as my home office work desk and yet, it miraculously fits five of us plus a driver inside its slimline frame.

I am in Bali and relaxed after enjoying a few solid hours of reading a good book on the plane, a novelty I rarely enjoy being a busy mother-of-two.

This is my first time in the popular Aussie tourist destination, so I have no anticipation of what awaits me as our mini-minivan leaves the safety of the airport carpark and enters the fray of the streets outside.

Hundreds of cars, scooters and minivans just like ours are jostling for position on the road. Lanes? What lanes? We quickly come face-to-face with another vehicle. It has been all of 60 seconds and the calm of my book-induced bliss has evaporated. I grip the ‘holy s*** handle’ until my knuckles, turn white and hold my breath.

Why are there no honking horns? Where are the crazy flailing arms and shouting obscenities out the window? Is my door locked to keep out any crazy road rager?

Having seen each other before any point of impact, the drivers stop and there is silence as they calmly look around one another, put their indicators on and glide on by. It’s the most Zen almost-accident I have ever seen. I’ve had Aussie drivers lean on

their horn if I so much as fail to accelerate away from an intersection the very second the traffic light turns green!

In this little silver minivan, I begin to pay a lot more attention to what is happening out the window around me. It is what we here in Australia would call chaos on the roads of Bali, with main intersections a flurry of vehicles travelling every which way (I saw just one set of traffic lights during my whole eight days there) and side streets so narrow I thought we were going to peel the sides off the minivan as our driver expertly navigated them. What happens when someone is already parked in one of these impossibly tiny streets? The driver calmly gets out of the car and approaches the vehicle, asking politely if they can pull into a nearby garage to allow us to get through.

Imagine if we could embody some of that road Zen here? If we just slowed down and weren’t so in a hurry. If we could understand we are all humans and yes, there will be times when other drivers will make mistakes on the road.

Instead of raging, what if we took a moment to empathise with that driver?

Maybe they are pulling out in a hurry because they’ve just got a call from the school to say their child has broken a leg?

I know I will be embodying the calmness of every Balinese driver we had throughout those eight days whenever I encounter an act of randomness on the road – breathe, look for a calm way around it, carry on.

THE BEAUTIFUL GIRLS TO HEADLINE OFFBEAT MUSIC FESTIVAL The Beautiful Girls are poised to headline the inaugural Offbeat Music Festival at The Imperial Hotel Eumundi in November.

Singer/songwriter, multiinstrumentalist and Beautiful Girls frontman Mat McHugh says they are pumped to head to the Coast to headline an epic line-up that will see more than 20 bands playing on five stages on November 2 from midday until late.

Reflecting on the band’s origins, Mr McHugh says he went through an apprenticeship playing in “a million weird little noisy garage band combinations” before forming The Beautiful Girls, which was named to irk his “punk rocker tough guy friends”.

“I grew up in a single-parent lowincome suburb by the beach and while my mother was working, I spent a lot of time being raised by the surf and skate community,” he says.

“I’d hear hip-hop and reggae and punk rock on the sound systems at parties

or blaring out of the back of cars on the way to the surf. All these sounds kind of mashed together into one combined soundtrack for me.

“I was fooling around with my acoustic songs by adding dub bass lines and hip-hop grooves on a beat-up old drum kit in my garage and singing in a mellow style about my real feelings, while all my other friends in bands were playing punk rock and screaming at the world. I still really love that stuff but I felt like my own musical expression lay elsewhere.”

Beginning as a musical collective that started out playing ‘guerrilla gigs’ – jacking open the power box at their local skate bowl – their road would lead from open-mic nights to number one albums, glowing reviews, tours, international travel, meetings with heroes, dalliances with villains and an exploration of what was important as artists, musicians and human beings.

CONFIDENCE IN THE NDIS IS GROWING More than 300,000 Australians are now accessing the NDIS, including 100,000 who are receiving disability support for the first time.

T

he latest Quarterly Report for the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) released last month shows the world-leading NDIS had benefitted more Australians and from increasingly diverse backgrounds than ever before.

Acting CEO of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIA), Vicki Rundle, says the latest COAG NDIS Quarterly Report for April 1 through to June 30, 2019 shows the strong progress the NDIS has made.

“The positive impact that the NDIS continues to have on the lives of Australians with disability and their families and carers is demonstrated by improved participant satisfaction results,” Ms Rundle says.

“This report outlines the NDIA’s progress – we’ve now exceeded 300,000 Scheme participants being supported, including close to 100,000 participants who have received supports for the first time.”

Ms Rundle says confidence in the scheme is growing, with 90 per cent of participants satisfied with their planning

experience and 86 per cent saying they thought their plan would make their life better.

Ms Rundle says access to a growing, vibrant and competitive provider market is

vital to participants achieving their goals.

The growth of the NDIS provider market is up six per cent in the June Quarter to 21,510 registered providers.

“Eligible Australians across almost all

areas of Australia now have access to the NDIS and we are particularly pleased to see an increase in the diversity of participants entering the Scheme,” Ms Rundle adds.

“Over 2000 participants identifying as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander joined the NDIS between April and June – representing 7.3 per cent of all participants entering in the quarter.

“Additionally, 10.3 per cent of participants who received an NDIS plan in the quarter were of Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) heritage, compared with 8.2 per cent in previous quarters combined.”

More children aged 18 years and under were benefitting from the NDIS than ever before, with 129,764 children nationally that had an approved NDIS plan – including 57,564 who had not received supports prior to entering the Scheme.

“While the latest quarterly report results are promising – there is still room for improvement and we continue to work on a number of initiatives to further enhance the experience participants have with the scheme.

THE IMPACT OF THE NDIS ON KIDS New survey results show the NDIS is having a significant impact on children and their families after just two years benefitting from the Scheme, including: For children who are not yet of school age: • 94 per cent of parents and carers thought the NDIS improved their child’s development compared to 91 per cent in their first year; and • 85 per cent of parents and carers thought the NDIS increased their child’s ability to communicate what they want, compared to 82 per cent in their first year.

For children starting school to 14 years after two years in the Scheme: • 65 per cent of parents and carers felt their child had become more independent as a result of the NDIS compared to 56 per cent in their first year.

STEPS chief executive officer Kerry Staines says the NDIS is a revolutionary new scheme for Australians with a disability, their families and carers.

“STEPS are helping people to navigate through the web of information. We’re working closely with our customers and families, showing them the tools and supports available to help them confidently achieve a life of greater independence based around individual needs and choices,” Kerry says.

“We really take the time to get to know our participants, we meet with them so we can put a ‘face to the name’ and understand what their needs and goals are,” Chelsea says.

“We also believe that getting to know the service providers is just as important, so we know we are recommending providers that we can trust, that will be the best fit for the participants’ needs.

“There is a huge sense of satisfaction in being able to get to know a participant, listen

to their story, help them to link in with services and the community, and watch them flourish.”

First National Real Estate CEO Ray Ellis shares his thoughts on the Sunshine Coast real estate market. WORDS: Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane.

D

uring his recent tour of the region, First National Real Estate CEO Ray Ellis was blown away by how much the region has evolved in recent years.

Mr Ellis recalls first being introduced to the region when visiting Coolum, when the oceanside town’s main highlights were a corner store, a theatre and a caravan park.

He says while there has been much expansion across the region, it still retains a lot of its charm for those living in inner cities but looking for a sea or tree change.

“It’s the place to retire, the place to relax and the prospects are good in terms of affordability compared to Sydney and Melbourne,” Mr Ellis says.

“In the last five years, more people have left the major cities than moved to them.

More people are changing their lifestyles to be a lot more relaxed.”

He says the Coast property market continues to remain steady because of what it offers in terms of a combination of lifestyle and emerging infrastructure projects.

“Australians have a fascination with real estate and 95 per cent of the Australian population are living within 100 kilometres of the coast, and the Sunshine Coast is

“The younger Queenslanders will always find living on the Sunshine Coast attractive because it’s like home for them, but younger people need more action and buzz within the community as well.

“The region has a stable market and it hasn’t experienced the huge peaks and

troughs of the Sydney and Melbourne markets, which makes it even more attractive to investors and owner-occupiers.”

One of the toughest things facing the industry at the moment is the continued practice of assessing loan applications with a nominal serviceability rate of 7.25 per cent.

Mr Ellis says the traditional one in eight loan

applications failing has been increased to three or four out of every eight thanks to this practice. “[There are] no real signs of that changing in the short term, making it hard for investors and serviceability of the loan,” he adds.

“Some of the latest studies show the average person living in inner-city Sydney or Melbourne would spend up to $300 per week on Uber Eats and people are outsourcing odd jobs more than ever before. They are paying people to mow their lawns, clean their pools, clean their houses and cars, do the ironing, so the cost of living is more than it ever has been for some demographics, and this all affects serviceability of the loan and are all factors the banks now consider.

“Banks continue to be more invasive than they were even two to three years ago, but there is always a way and buyers just need to be more aware of how they treat their money in order to get the loans they need to enter the property ladder or expand their property holdings.”

Mr Ellis says he believes the Coast will continue to be a “popular place” for people to set down roots, predicting a continued stability for the property market.

GETTING IT SOLD If you are still on the market you might find this interesting SOLD AFTER ONE AD IN MY WEEKLY PREVIEW After two weeks of open homes with no attendance at all, I spoke to my sellers about “powering up” the campaign of their property with some print ads in MWP. The day the ad came out I had an email from a Coast buyer who hadn’t been searching the Nambour area on the internet, but had seen the printed advert. By 10.20am we had a conversation. At 12.15pm they had an inspection and the property was under contract by 2pm that day. Time and again I’ve found that adding a print campaign into the marketing mix is key to finding the best buyers. SOLD BEFORE AUCTION FOR A COMPLEX RECORD Thanks to advertising in MWP I was able to attract a first homebuyer who was willing to pay a premium on an auction campaign at 16/1 Merchants Parade, Marcoola. The buyer wasn’t specifically looking in the area and if it wasn’t for the ad that ran in MWP we wouldn’t have attracted that buyer to the open home. The price level our online buyers were interested in paying for the property was around $15,000 less than our MWP buyer was willing to pay.

PRINT DELIVERED THE PREMIUM RESULT After a slow start to the campaign just relying on internet advertising and signage, I convinced my vendors that we had to do something different. They invested in just two quarter-page ads in My Weekly Preview and as a result we had a boost in numbers to the open house. A couple who had viewed the property online but discounted it, came and had a look after seeing the print ad. It turned out that the property was perfect for them. The result was a contract at the price the vendors wanted – happy vendors and happy buyers!

Well, the yawn fest is over with completion of the wave pool comp. Yep, watching test cricket is more exciting. Time to remove the chopsticks out of my eyes.

Now, we are entering the frustration season where northeast winds prevail and more alcohol seems to be drunk. But I do bring great news! There is a huge long ground swell about to hit and that by all accounts should last three weeks and average six foot. Nah... but nice to be positive. Cheers peeps.
