6 beef Osso Bucco Plain flour, seasoned to taste 1 large onion, finely chopped 2 cloves garlic 2 carrots, finely chopped 2 stalks celery, finely chopped 2 bay leaves

Dust Osso Bucco pieces in flour. Heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil in a large frying pan and add the beef, cooking on medium heat until golden on each side. Remove from heat. In a large saucepan heat ½ cup olive oil. Add the onion and garlic and cook over medium heat until onions are soft. Add carrots, celery and bay leaves and cook for another 3 minutes or until the vegetables are slightly tender.

Add wine and simmer for 5 minutes then stir in tomato paste until well combined. Add tomatoes and water. Cover the pot and simmer for 10 minutes. Season to taste. Scatter butter over the base of a large oven proof dish. Add the beef then pour over the vegetable sauce mix and water to almost cover the beef.

Cover dish tightly with foil and place in oven, cooking at 180 degrees for 90 minutes, or until meat is tender.

We recommend serving with a side of oven roasted vine ripened tomatoes and mashed potato.

First job? I’ve always loved working in customer service but had very humble beginnings at a BI-LO deli.

What are you currently working on? Welcoming our first residents into Estia Health Maroochydore. It’s the latest residential and respite aged-care home to open on the Sunshine Coast.

Your family includes? My wife, two girls and a therapy dog named Maitland.

If your life was a book, what would be the title? Caffeine Up and Wine Down.

David Schade has worked in the aged-care sector for more than 15 years. He joined the Estia Health team a year ago as the company’s Queensland customer relations manager. With Queensland Senior’s Week in full swing, Mr Schade is welcoming residents into the brand-new Estia Health Maroochydore aged care home, located in Sunshine Cove.

If you could change one thing on the Sunshine Coast, what would it be? With the Coast having such a large geographical footprint it is hard to stay connected as a community but new placemaking such as the Maroochydore CBD is leading the way. I would love to see more ways we can keep all members of our community connected, especially our elderly.

Best day in your life and why? I’d have to select two – the birth of each of my daughters.

Can you nominate a day in your life that turned out to be a turning point and why? At the age of 19, I made the big step to move from one side of the country to the other – Broome to the Sunshine Coast. I’ve never looked back.

Your greatest regret? Not getting to visit Europe before the birth of my children.

What achievement are you most proud of? Being a good role model for my children.

What are you watching right now, would you recommend it, and why? Billions on Stan– it’s a bit of a thriller and it’s very witty.

When was the last time you played sport and what was it? I enjoyed a game of golf about a month ago. I used to work at what was the Hyatt Coolum and used to love playing there.

Best advice you’ve been given? Follow your heart.

What is your favourite place on the Sunshine Coast and why? Coolum Beach. I met my wife while working at the Hyatt Coolum and we loved the peace and tranquillity of living under the mountain. We were regular walkers at Stumers Creek and loved being so close to the beach.

If you could tell your 18-year-old self anything, what would it be? Don’t take life so seriously!

If you won $1 million, how would you spend it? I’d buy a beach shack at Coolum Beach and renovate it.

Tea or coffee and how do you have it? Coffee – lots of it and long black please.

Our bid for the

OLYMPICS Jobs, money, roads, rail, tourism – the benefits of southeast Queensland winning the 2032 Olympics bid would be enormous. We talk to the key players who are working towards this monumental goal.

he hearts of countless Australians swelled with pride as iconic runner Cathy Freeman ascended onto the stage holding the Olympic torch high and officially opened the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney.

We could once again have the opportunity to celebrate and support our greatest athletes on home soil as a team of representatives from all tiers of government, known as the Leadership Group, have met with the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) to begin to put southeast Queensland (SEQ) on the radar to host the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Fairfax MP Ted O’Brien has been named as the Prime Minister’s representative for the SEQ Olympic campaign and he joins Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk, State Tourism and Major Events Minister Kate Jones, Lord Mayor of Brisbane Adrian Schrinner, Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson, and AOC President John Coates in the Leadership Group.

Mr O’Brien says the inaugural meeting of the Leadership Group has seen them “walk out from the changerooms to stand at the starting blocks, shoulder to shoulder, as a united force” to provide the best possible opportunity for SEQ to become a serious contender for the 2032 Games.

The existing Olympic sports program consists of 28 sports, with an Olympic Pre-feasibility Analysis Report and masterplan compiled by the Council of Mayors South East Queensland (COMSEQ)

Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson says the SEQ 2032 Olympic Bid is, and always has been, about the future liveability of the region.

“From the very outset, the SEQ Mayors identified the critical legacy that an Olympic and Paralympic Games would deliver in terms of the connectivity of SEQ,” Mayor Jamieson says.

“The investment required in the transport infrastructure and services for

SEQ will position us as a 45-minute region and well and truly set our communities up for the 21st century.

“Placing SEQ on the world stage and in front of a global audience will do much to cement our reputation as an outstanding destination to visit and invest, but the enduring benefits for our communities of hosting the Olympic and Paralympic Games are equally as important.

“Lighting the Olympic flame in SEQ will signal a bright future for our region.”

Visit Sunshine Coast CEO Simon Latchford says a successful bid would make an extraordinary contribution towards creating global destination awareness.

“To achieve the same level of awareness, from a standalone Sunshine Coast tourism perspective, it would take us a generation and from a budgetary point of view, is beyond our existing capacity,” he says.

“A key point in tourism marketing is you cannot visit a destination you’ve never heard of, nor can you buy a product you do not know exists.”

Mr Latchford says the Sunshine Coast Airport Expansion project will be completed before 2032, meaning each of the three major players in SEQ – Brisbane, Sunshine Coast and Gold Coast – will have international airports, streamlining arrivals and departures for athletes and spectators.

use of temporary facilities, this means that the greatest investment in infrastructure for us would be in transport and given our population growth as a region is one of the highest in the country, we need this investment. If the legacy of an Olympic Games is the fast rail network, for which I’ve been campaigning for now for 18 months, then I would be in heaven, because that’s precisely what we need.”

Mr O’Brien says the 2032 Olympics was much more than a one-off opportunity to secure a major event.

“It’s an exciting decade of preparation and a lasting legacy that will be enjoyed for generations,” he says.

“The Olympic Games is not just the world’s greatest sporting event, but also one of the world’s greatest unifiers and if we can secure the 2032 Games a decade out, it allows our region to play a critical role in bringing people together right across the world and showcasing the very best of the Coast.”

The next milestone in our Olympic bid is a delegation, which includes Mr O’Brien and Mayor Mark Jamieson, to meet with the IOC president Thomas Bach in Lausanne in Switzerland next month.

ECONOMIC LEGACY OF THE LAST THREE OLYMPIC GAMES

Commonwealth Games, Gold Coast Deputy Mayor Donna Gates told the ABC the Games had injected $2 billion into the local economy, with vision that was seen by 1.5 billion viewers around the world.

There is no doubt the financial benefits are substantial. According to the official Olympics website, the Games are estimated to have brought about a Gross Domestic Product uplift of between $6 and 7 billion to Sydney following the 2000 Olympics, creating over 100,000 new jobs and boosting the number of tourists by around 1.6 million per year.

Mr O’Brien says there are two key concerns that people have raised with him; the operating costs of the Olympics and investment in infrastructure.

“In relation to operating costs, the International Olympics Committee (IOC) have made big changes to their charter and their way of doing business with a view to making the Olympic Games a cost-neutral deal, in other words, the IOC have indicated that SEQ would not make an operating loss at all from the Olympics due to the changes they have introduced,” he says.

“The IOC is now encouraging the use of existing infrastructure and maximizing the

Beauty on Tasmania’s east coast Experience the natural wonders and bounty of Tasmania’s stunning environment with a luxury outdoor tour. WORDS: Caroline Berdon, AAP.

I

t’s a typical winter’s day on Tasmania’s east coast – clear, beautiful and cold – and I’m thigh-deep in a freezing river, tasting oysters at a table of white linen.

Our guide Chella Armstrong from luxury lodge Saffire Freycinet is plucking the shelled creatures from their beds, shucking them and laying them out alongside dipping sauces.

Geared up in waders, we help wash the oysters in the Apsley River, which flows from Great Oyster Bay. They’re dripping, briny and salty-sweet.

There’s an umbilical link in Tasmania between decadence and nature, between beauty and produce. The Apple Isle’s rich green pastures provide some of Australia’s best meat, wine and cheese, and its clean, cold waters some of our best seafood.

The turquoise sheen of our bay, about two-and-a-half hours north of Hobart by car, is surrounded by a visual feast: the white beaches of Freycinet National Park, thick green bush and the pink granite peaks of The Hazards mountain range.

hotel at this year’s World Travel Awards, captures the view perfectly.

It also encourages guests getting out to savour the area’s abundant wildlife, bird and marine life through 18 immersive experiences. Within half an hour of arriving, we’re in apiary suits and heading out to Saffire’s hives, which house 60,000 bees.

In winter the bees are a little dozy and we don’t want to disturb them, so we delve straight into tasting. One specimen is Leatherwood honey, unique to Tasmania, said to be one of the world’s best: creamy, balsamic and fruity all at once, it tastes of the island’s wilderness.

Our indulging has attracted the attention of some awkward-looking but cute animals.

Right next to us is the lodge’s free-range Tasmanian Devil enclosure, one of many around the island to ensure an insurance population of devils while facial tumour disease continues to ravage the species.

Back at the lodge the fires are raging and it’s nearing dinner time for us. Saffire boasts a stunning kitchen garden and its Palate

Restaurant stipulates that 80 per cent of its produce be sourced locally on the island.

There’s grass-fed, full-flavoured game meats, local fish and seafood (including those fat oysters from the bay), fresh herbs and spices and seasonal fruit and vegetables.

Discerning foodies from the mainland now expect nothing less from this island.

They also want to get out and explore Tasmania’s beauty in style. Freycinet’s jagged coastline is stabbed with secluded coves, while inland trails wind up to lookouts with breathtaking views of the lagoons and ocean.

Wineglass Bay, with its beautiful, perfectly curved white beach, is Freycinet’s highlight and up at a lookout on this fresh July day, its waters are a topaz mirror, glassy still. One of the best ways to experience the Freycinet Peninsular, the Tasman Peninsula and – between the two – Maria Island in outdoor decadence, is on Tasmanian Walking

Company’s Wineglass Bay Sail Walk, which spans four or six days. Sleeping on the Lady Eugenie, a 23-metre luxury ketch, guests enjoy dinners of local produce and wines either on board or barefoot on the beach.

Maria Island is dotted with cute, furry wombats chomping the grass. These rounded marsupials didn’t always have the run of the island, which lies 16 kilometres off the coast.

In its past, Maria has been a prison for the first convicts, a probation station and a farming community, but the last residents reluctantly left in the early 1970s, when the island was turned into a National Park.

It now belongs to the wombats, wallabies, kangaroos, fairy penguins, devils, the endangered Cape Barren goose and the fairy spotted pardalotes. The award-winning Maria Island Walk is the perfect way to explore this special place. It is an active but decadent way to enjoy the stunning landscapes while spending the night in tents and eco-friendly cabins.

Like in Freycinet, the island tempts us with its turquoise waters and if it was summer, I’d be straight in.

But today the sea is cold; a crab crawls slowly along the shoreline and a wombat munches happily on the grass behind the beach. A typical winter’s day in Tasmania.

NEW BEACH ACCESS AT BOKARINA OPENS

STAGE TWO OF BLI BLI TOWN CENTRE OPENS Sunshine Coast beachgoers have a much-anticipated new point to access the sand and surf at Stockland’s Bokarina Beach community following the official opening of a fully accessible public pathway. The $1.2-million project provides public access through the dunes to the beach for beach users, swimmers and emergency vehicles, as well as incorporating a timber viewing deck, seating, bike racks and shower, and a future lifeguard tower. Bokarina Beach will one day be home to more than 2500 people and Stockland senior development manager Mark McMahon says they are opening the much anticipated “missing link’’ of the regional Coastal Pathway, which will now connect through Bokarina Beach. The new beach access integrates with the Coastal Pathway, the longest shared pedestrian and cycle pathway in the Sunshine Coast region. This also coincides with the completion of 1.8 hectares of parkland surrounding the community’s new signature lake. The parkland is already becoming a popular regional destination for families, with the southern side incorporating a wooden pier, public square, places to picnic as well as grassed areas down to the water’s edge.

The second stage of the new $30-million Bli Bli Village Town Centre Development has officially opened. An F45 Fitness Studio, Salvos Retail Store, photography studio, Ray White Bli Bli, Sunshine Coast Radiology, an accountancy practice as well as an Indian restaurant all feature in the latest stage. Local coffee operators Daniel and Zac Carew have also recently opened another Bean There Done That cafe in stage one of the precinct. Developers Michael and Roz White (pictured with Ed and Natasha Hackenberg) say the new businesses will complement the 16 operators who have already opened. The final stage will include a hotel/tavern with 20 short-term accommodation units and is expected to be completed in late 2020.

Suncare volunteers Sally Dickinson and Paul Freeborough have been awarded the Aged and Community Services Australia (ASCA) Queensland State Award for Volunteer(s) of the Year. Ms Dickinson has been volunteering for Suncare for many years and is known for taking the time to get to know each customer. Mr Freeborough is skilled at helping customers engage in activities they love. Suncare has more than 200 volunteers who donate their time across a range of roles, including organising a wealth of activities at the centre in Maroochydore.

TACKLING SEPSIS TOGETHER Most people on the Sunshine Coast know the story of little Finn Smith (pictured in 2014), the 13-month-old boy who lost his hands and feet in 2013 to meningococcal septicaemia, or sepsis. enny and Lance Collett started their family business, Buderim Auto Service, in 1988 and have seen their fair share of ups and downs as they seek sustainability on all levels in their business.

While ensuring customer service, customer attraction and cash flow were consistent and always improving, their focus on mental health and wellbeing has only recently come to the fore.

The husband and wife team, who operate the workshop with their son and qualified mechanic Luke, have all tapped into the incredible resources available on the

Sunshine Coast Council and Mindstar’s joint program B-Well and Prosper.

The Australian-first free wellbeing program for small- to medium-sized businesses has been making waves among the Coast business community.

“Everything was relevant to us and our business, because when you are dealing with different kinds of stresses as a business owner, if you don’t do something positive, your mind will go down the drain.”

Mrs Collett says all business owners know that business can be hard at times as well as stressful, but they don’t have to do it alone.

“What the council has done is a great initiative, whether you have been in business for a long time or a short time,” she says.

“This event has always been about supporting our innovative Coast boutiques while fundraising on a small scale,” she says.

“Not only will we have three boutiques for the first time, but guests will be able to indulge in a delicious high tea at the Lakehouse instead of our usual lunch fare.”

Mrs Olson says while it’s the fashion and social connection that draw people to these events, which were formerly known as Fashionista Fridays, they have raised more than $70,000 over the years to support Coast families who are doing it tough. Coast-based charities have also benefited.

Proceeds from this My Style Fridays event will go to My Wedding Wish, which gifts weddings to couples where one partner has a terminal illness.

For the love of laughs

Comedian Tommy Little is on his way the Sunshine Coast, and he can’t wait. WORDS: Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane.

T

ommy Little can’t wait to ditch the freezing Sydney temperatures for some sunshine when he comes to the Coast as part of this year’s Horizon Festival.

The comedian, one-half of radio’s Carrie & Tommy show and The Project fill-in host says he is particularly keen to get in front of a Sunshine Coast crowd.

“I’ve finally got enough of a profile to get some big crowds while touring regional areas,” he say.

“I’m stoked to get away from the inner-city arts festivals to see real people who are genuinely up for a good time.

“My family are all from the country and I feel like audiences in regional areas are a bit more aware that it took you a while to get there and they give less f***s, which is right up my alley.”

Mr Little’s latest show, Self-Diagnosed Genius, is a satirical look at whether some of his more unusual accomplishments – namely bungee jumping nude on live TV

and signing up to run one of the toughest marathons in the world, in minus 20-degree weather in Antarctica, with no previous experience or training – are the acts of an idiot or a pure genius.

“It’s just a fun hour where you don’t learn anything. A lot of comedians tell people how to live their lives, but if you are going to a comedy show to get life lessons then you’ve already lost in life,” he quips.

“This is an opportunity to forget all the s**t you’ve got going on in your life and have a laugh, with me or at me, and have a good time.”

Having become a household name on national radio and TV, Mr Little insists that, “stand-up is my love”.

“While people keep employing me to do other things, I’ll do them and love doing them as well, but stand-up’s my first love.

“There’s nothing quite like a live audience,” he says.

“Comedy was kind of a natural fit for me,” he adds. “I was always described as a bit of an over-excitable d***head and comedy is great when you fail at all other job prospects in life.

“Nobody does comedy out of choice; it’s a last resort.”

For the past few years, Tommy has been the host of the Just for Laughs stand-up series from the Sydney Opera House, filmed for the Comedy Channel in Australia, and regularly sells out his live shows across the country.

He hosted the Comedy Channel’s Whose Line is It Anyway? Australia and whatever the medium, Tommy is smart, engaging and holds the audience in the palm of his hand.

Girl Gone Maleny author Leigh Robshaw discovered a strength within herself, and so much more, on a transformational trip to South America. WORDS: Jemma Pearson.

G

rowing up in Sydney and the Blue Mountains in the 1980s, writer Leigh Robshaw fell in love with faraway places and exotic cultures.

“When I was really little I used to read Encyclopaedia Britannica,” she says.

“The full-colour pictures of exotic places in the world – I was fascinated.

“I remember seeing pictures of pyramids in Mexico and the waterholes where they found bones of sacrificed Mayan women and children. I have always been drawn to those

strange, dark stories. Near Katoomba we had the Inca Gallery – an unusual little gallery of ancient artefacts. I went there as a teenager and was intrigued. I was fascinated by South and Central America – iconic places like Machu Picchu and Christ the Redeemer in Rio. I felt a deep pull to those cultures.”

In 1995 the then 23-year-old filled a backpack and, with her friend Emily, boarded a plane for the adventure of a lifetime. Arriving in Buenos Aires, Ms Robshaw instantly felt at home. And then she met Gabriel.

“On my third day I met a man in a market.

It was an instant connection. Without wanting to sound too woo-woo, I felt it was a past-life connection. It was love at first sight.”

Ms Robshaw and Emily had planned to go backpacking around Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia and Peru before heading to London to find work. It was an extraordinary trip, but Gabriel was never far from Ms Robshaw’s mind.

After six months in London with her bank account replenished, she travelled back to South America to live with Gabriel in his homeland of Peru. But adventure called and they took to the road with the intention of embarking on a new life together.

“We travelled north and didn’t really know where we would end up. We just wanted to be by the beach in a tropical climate where we could sell jewellery.”

They found their dream home in Playa del Carmen, a Mexican resort town between Cancun and Tulum – a destination now popularised by Instagrammers.

Gabriel was an artisan jewellery maker and they made a humble living selling his creations to tourists in Playa del Carmen.

There they met Jimmy No Problem, a charismatic Mexican shopkeeper who invited them to sell their wares from his store, a hub for a crew of colourful characters.

“Everyone was an artisan or artist, musician or traveller. I met lots of amazing people. We were invited to live in a little compound of thatched-roof huts near the beach. There was no security, no hot water.

It was primitive and I loved every second.”

As her Spanish improved, Ms Robshaw’s relationship with Gabriel, who didn’t speak English, intensified.

“There were small cultural differences, but we were best friends and our connection was very strong. I wanted to marry him, have babies and live there forever. But there were things about Gabriel that began to surface. We both had some issues we needed to work on

and these were exacerbated by a few dangerous situations we found ourselves in.”

Despite the ups and downs, Ms Robshaw loved her new life, which was a stark contrast to the one she had back home, where she had often felt insecure and misplaced.

“Due to some difficulties I experienced in childhood, I grew up with low self-esteem and little sense of belonging. I felt like I needed to reinvent myself away from Australia, in a place where I could be whoever I wanted to be and where I felt accepted.”

After three-and-a-half years away, she did return home, but with a new sense of purpose. “I didn’t feel as lost anymore. That trip and overcoming challenges in a really difficult environment strengthened me and made me resilient. It was transformational.”

It’s this transformation she shares in her new book You Had Me at Hola, a memoir of her time in South America and Mexico.

Through her book, Ms Robshaw hopes to inspire others to see South and Central America and its people in the way she does.

“I feel there has been a lot of bad press about Latinos lately. Violence and poverty does exist there, but the vast majority of people are warm and welcoming. People who had nothing, who were poor, welcomed me again and again.

“The people with the least amount are often the most generous and that is a big thing I learnt in Latin America, and it is something that will always stay with me.”

T

he Australian stock market has finally reached a fresh high, with the S&P/ASX 200 Index recently surpassing its previous intraday peak of 6851.5 and the closing high struck on November 1, 2007 of 6828.7.

By comparison, the US S&P 500 Index took less than six years to pass its pre-global financial crisis peak and the Nasdaq Composite took less than four.

On the other hand, it has been nearly 30 years since Japan’s equity market peaked.

The local market has retreated sharply since scaling those peaks, sliding more than five per cent before recovering some lost ground to currently stand around four per cent lower. That swift reversal comes as the trade war between the US and China

enters a more antagonistic phase after Washington slapped a 10 per cent tariff on another $US300 billion of Chinese goods imported by American companies and consumers.

China retaliated by allowing its currency, the yuan, to fall to the lowest level against the greenback in more than a decade – making its exports cheaper – and telling state-owned enterprises to halt purchases of US agricultural exports.

“The swift reversal comes as the trade war between the US and China enters a more antagonistic phase” That, in turn, led the US Department of the Treasury to formally label China as a currency manipulator, and threaten to engage with the International Monetary Fund to eliminate what it described as China’s unfair competitive advantage.

The action by Treasury is the first such event since president Bill Clinton’s administration in 1994 and had bipartisan support in Congress.

US president Donald Trump’s latest move comes just days after the Federal Reserve cut interest rates for the first time in 10 years.

Trump is likely hoping the US can exert pressure on China without significant consequences, as the Fed will act as a backstop – cutting interest rates to support the economy and limit market volatility –

the so-called ‘Fed put’. This may work but it is a high-risk tactic given stagnating manufacturing activity, only middling global corporate earnings momentum, and a (still) sharp rise in valuations.

The question remains, who will blink first?

Sami Muirhead says science has proven men see just as much mess as women do around the home – they’re just better at ignoring it.

Richard O’Leary discovers his son has a hero and it’s not his dad. But after the initial shock, he realises he’s fine with just being a good dad.

D

oes the bloke in your life seem to have selective vision when it comes to tidying up? Well, a study has come out that I feel we should have splashed across front pages around the world, because it busts an age-old myth and proves that men do in fact see the same mess women see in a room.

Say what? I would have bet the farm this was not the case. I am currently running my own little sneaky experiment at home. I have placed a pair of sneakers on the bottom step of the staircase. For seven years we have lived in our two-storey house and anything on the bottom of the steps means it needs to be taken up next time someone walks up the stairs. Anything that needs to come down is placed at the top of the staircase.

I do not think this is brain surgery. But do you know, not one single person in our house has ever picked up said items and carried them up or down, unless I have barked instructions? I seem to be the only mule that carts things up and down the stairs. I bet if a packet of jelly beans was lying there, the kids would pick it up quick smart.

So I am leaving the sneakers to see how long my husband just ignores them. At this rate, we may have all succumbed to global warming before he notices the sneakers.

When we are in marriage counselling, he will be hearing a lot about the stupid pair of sneakers. It could even lead to a book titled The Day The Sneakers On The Stairs Made

Me Snap.

I wonder if the same selective blindness would be at play if the item on the step was a beer?

A lot of my time is being taken up with this sneaker experiment that no one else in the house knows I am even conducting. To be fair, my husband is a beautiful soul who spoils me rotten but we all have that one thing that bugs us, right? I am sure I have plenty of annoying habits.

So when I read Leah Ruppanner from the University of Melbourne’s study I froze in my tracks. Goddess Leah has proven in her research that men spend a third as much time cleaning as women on an typical day.

We probably knew that. But Leah claims women are not the beacons of cleanliness and men are in fact able to see the messiness in their midst. The study shows men are simply less penalised for not keeping their spaces tidy and clean. No one expects a man to keep a clean home but the whole world is pretty quick to judge a woman if we have dust bunnies in our homes.

Leah also claims women are not better at mutlitasking than men. I find this one a bit of a stretch. I can make lunches, check emails, listen to music, drink wine and hold a conversation like a boss!

All this research does not answer another question: why is it most blokes cannot spot a dirty plate on the kitchen table, but they can spot a g-string on the beach at fifty metres away? Curious indeed!

ad, I have a new hero,” my 10-year-old said. This should be interesting, I thought.

“Capablanca.”

“Capa-what-now?”

“Daaaaad! He’s a chess player.”

A little disappointed I’d been usurped, I played along nonetheless.

“Why is this Capablanca your hero?”

“He once went 18-years straight without being defeated in chess.”

A quick scan of the book my son was reading also revealed Jose Raul Capablanca was the most famous chess master to play against a roomful of opponents in Britain’s House of Commons.

“I once went 18 years without a defeat in chess,” I quipped. No one beat me between me between 1972 and 1990, the latter date being the first time I played the game.

“It doesn’t count if you’re talking before you played a game,” he replied. Check. My eldest son was a step ahead of his Old Man in life, as well as on the chess board.

I can’t say my childhood heroes were exotic as a grand master from Cuba. My idols were rugby league players: Sterlo, Pricey and Brett ‘Bert’ Kenny.’

Much like my son though, I wanted to follow in the footsteps of my heroes; read a game like Sterling, tackle like Price and jink like the five-eighth who dethroned Wally Lewis on the 1982 tour of Great Britain.

cNab is cementing its mark on the Sunshine Coast, celebrating its win for the construction of Shine Birtinya Retirement Village at the Master Builders Queensland Housing and Construction Awards.

The $44-million vertical retirement village, constructed on behalf of Stockland and in partnership with PDT Architects and Motus Consulting, was awarded the best Community Accommodation for Aged Care

and Nursing Home on the Sunshine Coast.

The annual Master Builders Housing and Construction Awards recognise members at the forefront of building innovation and quality craftsmanship, promoting and showcasing excellence in Queensland’s housing and construction industry.

McNab managing director and CEO Michael McNab says this award is testament to the quality of work the Sunshine Coast team and its subcontractors have consistently

delivered since the office opened its doors in 2017.

“We worked in close partnership with the client to ensure we could deliver the village in three stages, allowing residents in the first tower to move in four months early, while the remaining tower and pool area were completed,” he says.

“This type of sequenced approach was done to ensure Stockland’s sales strategy was streamlined for the new development with two display apartments ready for customers to walk through before the entire construction was complete.”

The retirement village is an eight-storey, 140-unit luxury complex with one, two and three-bedroom apartments designed to meet the needs of retirees and build a sense of community. The village includes an outdoor pool, dining areas, landscaped garden and a two-storey club house including a kitchen, coffee lounge, library, billiards room and gym.

To achieve a Four Green Star rating, the building incorporated a number of sustainable elements, including rainwater harvesting, appropriate sanitary fixtures selection, ventilation and cooling design and the use of natural or recycled products.

Following the success and completion of Shine Birtinya Retirement Village, McNab has maintained the relationship with Stockland and has since been awarded a few more projects in southeast Queensland.

Stockland Builtform Communities regional manager of development Pauline Barton says Shine Birtinya Retirement Village is a particularly exciting project given it was the company’s first greenfield vertical retirement village in Queensland.

usinesses located in the new Maroochydore City Centre will be in the ‘beating heart’ of future growth on the Sunshine Coast, according to Sunshine Coast Chamber Alliance secretary Jennifer Swaine.

Ms Swaine, a small business owner, says the new CBD was a ‘shot in the arm’ for the Sunshine Coast economy which is growing at a higher rate than the national average.

“There was a sense of stagnancy post-GFC, but we have really turned the corner,” says Ms Swaine, who is also chair of the Sunshine Coast Business Awards.

“The latest migration figures show the Sunshine Coast is one of the biggest hotspots in Australia.

“There’s been incredible levels of public and private infrastructure investment in the new hospital, the international subsea cable, the Sunshine Coast Airport expansion

and the creation of a new CBD for the region.

“A city forms the heart of every region and that’s what Maroochydore City Centre is doing for the Sunshine Coast. It’s already beating very strongly.

“If people don’t get in now, they will miss out or have to pay a lot more in the future.”

Bespoke Investment Group director Matt Greenough says his company is relocating from Sippy Downs into the CBD’s first commercial office building, Foundation Place, which is already 42 per cent leased and is expected to open late next year.

“Our business specialises in property investing across the country and we have every confidence the new city centre will form a large part of the region’s growth in coming years,” Mr Greenough says.

Mr Greenough says the international subsea cable, which will be operational by 2020 and provide the fastest data and

telecommunications connection to Asia from the east coast of Australia, swayed his decision to relocate Bespoke to Maroochydore City Centre.

“It will bring international opportunities to the area and, by being right here in the middle of the action in the CBD, we hope to take advantage of those opportunities as well,” he says.

“The subsea cable is a game changer for the Sunshine Coast economy and I’m confident national and international companies will also identify the business opportunities it offers.”

Following People’s Day celebrations earlier this month to mark the official opening of the first stage of the new city centre to the public, Horizon Festival will take over the newly-formed Metropolitan creative precinct (The MET) with live music, children’s activities, arts workshops, pop-up galleries and more.
