ast Friday night, I had the honour of attending the 21st annual Sunshine Coast Business Women’s Network Awards. It was glitzy, glam and above all else, inspiring.

Those 300 people gathered in the event room were joined together in one common interest – to celebrate the achievements of the 27 women who were this year’s award finalists.

As each woman took to the stage – the winners sharing their stories of hard work, stumbles and success – I felt fresh waves of inspiration.

I was inspired by their tenacity to overcome various odds to achieve. I’m sure there wasn’t a woman on that stage who hadn’t battled difficulties in the background, and yet continued to thrive in their chosen field, remaining optimistic about their future success. Although not everyone could take home the winning title, all of the finalists were worthy recipients. You can check out all of the photos from the big night on pages 14 and 15.

Speaking of optimism, this week’s feature story is about just that! We chat with celebrated author Jim Stovall about the importance of adopting gratitude and optimism in our everyday lives. It’s not as difficult as it sounds.

SUNNY GIRL First job? Farmer Tom’s Convenience Store in Maroochydore at 14. I was on the checkout. Old men used to come in and buy People and Picture magazines and I used to give them a glare. Every shift I got a free doughnut and soft drink.

What are you currently working on? I’m looking forward to the walk. We want to drum up as much support as we can. I’m also looking forward to relaxing a bit more towards the end of the year (as the beginning of the year was so full on) and I’m going to be a bridesmaid at Jules’ and Cam’s (from MAFS) wedding!

Favourite book? One of my favourite books is Conversations With God. I’m currently reading number four. It’s not religious; it’s quite the opposite. It just gives another perspective on life. The first book opened the door to so many things for me.

Heidi Latcham is a breakfast announcer with 91.9 Sea FM. She grew up on the Sunshine Coast and moved away, returning to base herself here earlier this year. She rose to prominence as a contestant on the sixth season of Married at First Sight earlier this year. Heidi is an ambassador for Cancer Council Queensland and will participate in the Walk for Women’s Cancers starting at Alexandra Headland Skate Park on Sunday, September 15.

If your life was a book, what would the title be? Oh My Goodness I Can’t Even Believe It!

upset or angry, I read that quote and think, no, do not feel sorry for yourself. I stand up straight and I get on with life.

What is your favourite place on the Sunshine Coast?

Definitely Point Cartwright. I love it so much. It just makes me feel good in my body and my heart. I love the grass and sand and I can look out on everything from the lighthouse. It makes me smile.

Best day in your life and why? I wake up every day and hope to make today my best day so far.

Your greatest regret? I don’t have any regrets but I do wish sometimes I wasn’t so hard on myself.

What achievement are you most proud of?

Working at Sea FM doing the breakfast show. I’m doing my dream job in my dream place. I have wanted to live back here for so many years so I’m grateful to be able to live and work where I do.

What are you watching right now? I ‘was’ watching Stranger Things. I watched season one and two in four days but my life got so hectic, I felt like I was in Stranger Things! So at the moment I’ve banned myself from watching season three.

When was the last time you played sport and what was it? I do pilates a couple of times a week, and I go to the gym.

Best advice you’ve been given? The other day I was watching the movie GI Jane (for the fifth time) and at the end there was a quote in a book: ‘I never saw a wild thing sorry for itself. A bird will fall frozen dead from a bough without ever having felt sorry for itself.’ Every time in my life when I think, what’s going on? Or I’m

You are happiest when? I’m on the beach, in the sun, about to go in the water.

What frustrates you the most? Mean people and bullies. There is just no need.

How do you deal with your frustrations? I just don’t have anything to do with them. There’s no room for them in my life.

If you could have dinner with any three people, dead or alive, who would they be? Prince, Oprah and BarRat from Sea FM (he made me say that).

If you won $1 million, how would you spend it? I would buy an amazing house here on the beach.

Tea or coffee? Neither – I like smoothies.

NRL or AFL? Until this year neither, but it’s NRL now.

At work we have a lot to do with the Sunshine Coast Falcons. Eric Smith from the Falcons and Jack Reed from the Broncos have been teaching me about football and I’m actually really enjoying it, because now I understand what’s going on!

Eating dark chocolate could boost mood and relieve symptoms of depression, scientists say. Adults who tucked into the treat had 70 per cent lower odds of reporting depressive symptoms than those who ate no chocolate at all, the research showed.

The team studied data from 13,626 adults in the US and also found the 25 per cent who ate the most chocolate of any kind were less likely to report depressive symptoms than those who did not eat it.

But the survey was only a ‘snapshot’ and further research is needed to confirm a link, experts have cautioned.

Lead author Dr Sarah Jackson, from University College London’s Institute of Epidemiology and Health Care, said: “This study provides some evidence that consumption of chocolate, particularly dark chocolate, may be associated with reduced odds of clinically relevant depressive symptoms.”

Data was gathered from the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Adults’ chocolate consumption was checked against their scores on the Patient Health Questionnaire, which looked at depressive symptoms.

OPTIMISM Looking on the bright side of life isn’t just for Pollyannas.

We can all benefit from being more optimistic, even when the odds are stacked against us. WORDS: Candice Holznagel.

W

hen I was a child, my mum always told me to look on the bright side of life. She said there was no use dwelling on the past. Instead, she said, “life can be hard, but we’ve got to keep going.

We’ve got to look at all the good things we have.”

This from a woman who, to this day, has endured more loss than anyone I know.

I am a mother now and through the trials and tribulations of life, I try to instil a sense of positive wellbeing and optimism in my son.

During the tough times, I hear my mother’s voice; I am inspired by her strength and her ability to not turn away from her difficulties, but to acknowledge and choose life over loss.

Oscar-winning filmmaker Guillermo del Toro penned a piece on optimism for a Time magazine column, summing it up nicely.

“Optimism is our instinct to inhale while suffocating. Our need to declare what ‘needs to be’ in the face of what is. Optimism is not uncool; it is rebellious and daring and vital.

“Optimism is radical. It is the hard choice, the brave choice. And it is, it seems to me, most needed now, in the face of despair.

“The American writer Theodore Sturgeon once said: ‘Ninety per cent of everything is crap’ and I believe he was

right. But surely that also means that ‘Ten per cent of everything is worth the damn effort,’” wrote del Toro.

However, Mr Stovall says that the benefits, not only on a personal level, but also societal, are huge.

“Beyond being healthier, wealthier, and happier, optimism allows us to have more positive interaction with family, friends, and the world in general.

“Being an optimist is one of the greatest gifts you can give to yourself and our society,’’ he adds.

And, for those who feel that optimism is out of reach, I leave you with the words of Mr del Toro: “History and fable have both proven that nothing is ever entirely lost. David can take Goliath. A beach in Normandy can turn the tide of war.

“Bravery can topple the powerful. These facts are often seen as exceptional, but they are not. Every day, we all become the balance of our choices – choices between love and fear, belief or despair.

Stephen King, author In his initial writing years Stephen King was both broke and struggling, as he lived in a trailer with his wife, who was also a writer. They had no phone due to its expense and had to borrow clothes for their wedding in 1971. Despite his less than fortunate financial position, King didn’t let this get in the way of what he loved most. Both he and his wife continued to work multiple jobs in order to support their family and still pursue their writing careers. King also received a staggering number of rejection letters, but still refused to give up. In his autobiography On Writing he states: “By the time I was 14… the nail in my wall would no longer support the weight of the rejection slips impaled upon it. I replaced the nail with a spike and kept on writing.”

Optimism reduces the chance of anxiety and depression.

Millennials are known as the most optimistic generation.

A study at Bentley University shows that despite increasing levels of student loans, debt, poverty and unemployment millennials are still more confident about their future financial positions.

Optimists take fewer sick days. Optimists thinkers have been found to get less sick, recover faster from major surgery and experience a smaller number of injuries.

Jim Carrey, actor From a young age Jim Carrey relied heavily upon the power of a positive mindset. When Carrey’s father lost his job, the family found it difficult to make ends meet. They lived in a Volkswagen campervan located on a relative’s lawn, and at a young age, Carrey worked an eight-hour shift each day in a factory after school, to help support his family. While many would have given in to the probability of a bleak future, the aspiring young comedian went on to perform his first onstage routine at age 15. Initially, his performance bottomed out, but still not willing to give up his dream, Carrey quit school the next year and at age 16, decided to focus his full attention on comedy. After moving to Los Angeles, Carrey would spend his nights parked on Mulholland Drive picturing his successful future. His optimistic thinking soon paid off, as he received his first multimillion payday for his part in the comedy success Dumb and Dumber.

Anh Do, author, presenter, comedian No one understands the art of optimism quite like Anh Do. After escaping Vietnam on a nine-metre fishing boat to live in Australia, Do and his family did everything they could to adjust and have a better life in a strange country. But it wasn’t a smooth transition.

On their way to a new life in Australia, their boat was attacked by pirates, twice. Do reflects on the moment a pirate hung a small boy over the railing of the fishing vessel. Eventually the pirate gave the boy back to his distressed mother, “and that’s a good thing” Do recalls, because, “that kid is my little brother Khoa, who in 2005 was Young Australian of the Year.” If his optimistic attitude in the face of life-threatening danger isn’t enough to inspire you, then his ability to go on and become one of Australia’s most loved comedians surely will.

THE ANALYSIS In a speech at a national bush summit in Dubbo, Prime Minister Scott Morrison said he was concerned about the disconnect between the city and bush and the rise in organised farm invasions [by animal extremists]. He said he wanted to reconnect Australians with rural and regional communities and ensure there was an “appropriate balance� in what students were taught about farming.

AAP FactCheck examined the claim made by the Prime Minister. A spokesperson for Mr Morrison told AAP FactCheck the source of his claim was a 2011 report titled Food, Fibre and the Future commissioned by the Primary Industries Education Foundation, a not-forprofit advocacy body funded by a number of large Australian agricultural producers including Cotton Australia and Meat and

Livestock Australia.

The Food, Fibre and the Future report surveyed year six and year 10 students and teachers, to find out what they knew about primary industries in Australia.

Seventy-one schools participated in the survey, including 35 primary schools. No primary schools in the Northern Territory or the ACT took part.

The report does not name the schools which participated, nor how many were in regional or rural areas.

Year six students, the group quoted by the Prime Minister, performed the worst in the survey. The report found 75 per cent of the grade six students surveyed believed cotton socks were made from an animal product. This supports the first half of Mr Morrison’s claim.

However, Mr Morrison’s representation of the report’s findings on bananas, cheese and bread is misleading.

The survey showed students a picture of a lunchbox containing a cheese sandwich and banana, accompanied by a question asking which foods in the lunchbox come from farms. The answer options were: just the banana, just the banana and the cheese, just the bread and the banana, all of them.

The report found only 55 per cent of grade six students identified all three items as collectively coming from farms, meaning 45 per cent could not correctly identify the source of all three.

However, according to the report, an additional 24–79 per cent correctly identified both the banana and cheese as coming from a farm. The report found students had the hardest time linking bread with farming.

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics Sample Size Calculator, the report’s sample size was too small to reach “the required level of accuracy�.

The number of grade six students surveyed was 213 – or 0.077 per cent of the total number of grade six students of 276,038 according to ABS data in 2011 when the survey was undertaken.

THE VERDICT As the sample size of the survey was too small, the report was eight years old, and the results were misrepresented slightly by the Prime Minister, AAP FactCheck found Mr Morrison’s claim to be true but somewhat misleading.

the conversation Natasha Exelby will share her own struggles with mental health as part of an inaugural conference on PTSD. WORDS: Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane.

Y

ou know her as an award-winning journalist and competitor in this year’s I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!, but Natasha Exelby has fought many private battles in her past.

As an ambassador for FearLess, Ms Exelby will share her harrowing story at the inaugural FearLess conference for the PTSD charity.

“From the age of 15, I had straight-up depression. I had a picture-perfect childhood but a chemical imbalance in my brain meant that I struggled,” she says.

“My parents took me to basically every psychiatrist and psychologist under the sun for me to be well, but there were times where it nearly killed me “When I was 31 years old, I had a

nervous breakdown and had to go and live with my parents for three months. I wasn’t capable of coherently speaking with other people and stepping outside the front door seemed impossible. But bit by bit, I had to work my way up.

“When you get hit like that, it takes a long time to get up, but I am up. I’ve lived in six different cities including internationally and am working and living a normal and fantastic life.”

Ms Exelby admits that although she hates recalling those dark moments in her life, hearing others share their stories helped to give her the hope that she could get back up again. “Hearing them speak helped save my life,” she says. “If I can help someone by telling my story then it’s worth the pain for me.”

The FearLess conference will bring together the PTSD community, including those who are suffering this acute form of brain injury, their families, and the individuals and organisations that are providing assistance (whether that takes the form of medical treatment or social support) with a view to identifying what a national strategy for managing PTSD might look like.

As a correspondent to the Middle East, where she covered activities in the war zones, Ms Exelby says she has seen firsthand the effects of PTSD on everyone from civilians to military forces.

“Part of being a journalist is to meet some people on the worst day of their life and the trauma that causes in the many years following that can be more deadly than the event itself,” she says.

“We need to dispel the myth that PTSD is only experienced by war veterans, because it goes far beyond that and includes our emergency service teams, nurses and doctors in emergency wards, domestic and sexual violence victims among others.

“Some people that have PTSD don’t even realise it; they just think they are going crazy. They’ve actually got a brain injury, a trauma, and it needs to be medically treated.”

FearLess PTSD Australia New Zealand CEO Alex Gerrick says PTSD is a significant national problem that demands a national response from not only health-care professionals, but also from government bodies, the corporate community, academia and community groups.

“PTSD touches all parts of society so we are thrilled to generate more discussion on this pervasive issue that affects so many Australians,” he says.

The three-day conference runs from August 21 to 23 at The Events Centre in Caloundra and will include an impressive line-up of speakers from the PTSD community. These include Professor Richard Bryant, Police Federation of Australia president Mark Carroll, former police inspector Belinda Neil, Phoenix Australia’s Professor David Forbes, University of Sydney Professor of Neuroscience Maxwell Bennett, ANROWS chair Sam Mostyn, USC chancellor Air Chief Marshal Sir Angus Houston and Stories of HOPE founder Kerrie Atherton.

UNITED WE STAND A new alliance has been formed to help prevent suicide on the Sunshine Coast. WORDS: Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane.

O

rganisations across the Sunshine Coast are joining forces to help prevent suicide, with the Alliance for Suicide Prevention – Sunshine Coast growing to 50 alliance partners since its launch in February this year.

The alliance was formed by USC’s Sunshine Coast Mind & Neuroscience Institute – Thompson Institute, and brings together a network of community groups and organisations across a range of sectors that are committed to preventing suicide.

Research fellow in suicide prevention Dr Amanda Clacy says on average, one person per week dies by suicide on the Sunshine Coast, which is higher than the national average.

“For every Australian that takes their own life, 100 people are impacted,” she says, noting that four in five local suicides are men.

“The Coast has plenty of organisations, support groups and community groups working in this space, but until now they’ve not necessarily been interconnected or worked together.”

The aim of the alliance is to share knowledge and resources and offer a

rate of suicide and it does so by reducing the rate of depression,” he says.

“We know there is a very strong link between depressive symptoms and suicidality and so the idea is that if we can reduce the rate of depression, we can identify it, we can put people into care, and we have discernible impact on suicidality on the Sunshine Coast.”

“It is important that more people in the community have the skills to identify someone who might be struggling” Suicide prevention researcher Dr Amanda Clacy comprehensive picture of the support available to Sunshine Coast residents.

“By unifying and synchronising suicide prevention on the Sunshine Coast, we can remove help-seeking obstacles, connect people with the right services, provide a range of relevant training and education opportunities, and

destigmatise how suicide is discussed and treated,” Dr Clacy says.

Thompson Institute director Professor Jim Lagopoulos says the alliance is modelled on the European Alliance Against Depression because of its grounding in evidence. “The European model has very strong evidence to show that it reduces the

LOCAL NEWS A survey conducted by the Thompson Institute found 75 per cent of respondents would talk to their friends and family about mental health concerns, but 80 per cent of people were also either unsure or did not believe that their friends or family had the skills to identify a mental health problem and provide support.

Dr Clacy says the findings highlight the need for the public to increase their awareness of mental health issues and gain the skills needed to support those close to them.

“These may not even be skills we know we need, but the people around us may need us to have them,” she says.

“It is important that more people in the community have the skills to identify someone who might be struggling with mental health so they know how to start the conversations that can really help those people.”

There are a number of ways to connect with the alliance. On an individual level, you can attend free suicide awareness training every month, to learn how to identify when a person might be struggling and connect them to professional help.

Organisations can host suicide prevention training programs for their workplaces and Sunshine Coast health professionals can access subsidised

advanced suicide awareness training delivered by the Black Dog Institute through the alliance.

The alliance also welcomes new partners to integrate suicide prevention strategies into their organisation.

“We have built up to 50 alliance partners and there are around 1800 staff employed within those organisations, so approximately 130,000 people will be in contact with those organisations in a year,” she says.

“When we look at the potential for extrapolation of information, it gets very big, very quickly and the more organisations we have as alliance partners who are integrating suicide prevention into their training schedules we are accessing.”

True colours Caloundra artist Steven Bordonaro talks to My Weekly Preview about the inspiration for his latest mural – a wonderful celebration of Sunshine Coast life. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw.

ou can’t miss the new mural at the Maroochydore Homemaker Centre. Pandanus palms, surf lifesavers, surfboards and a smiling sun painted in bright yellow, blue, red, green, orange and pink animate what was a blank wall in an incredibly colourful, happy artwork.

Local artist Steven Bordonaro created the mural over six days and has received nothing but positive feedback.

The long-term Caloundra local is known for his colourful abstract murals, often in a style reminiscent of Picasso, which can be seen across the Sunshine Coast, from Kings Beach to Nambour.

“Everyone says the same – there should be more of it. People love the colour, you never hear any negative comments. The work I do, I try to keep non-offensive and all ages.

“Kids and the elderly love it. Every now and then, I go down to the beach with my easel and canvas and just paint what I see.

“I have a surf and a coffee. I always get people grabbing a chair and just watching.

They say it’s therapeutic watching me paint.

“While they’re watching me, I’m hearing their whole life story and what I’m hearing is flowing into the painting.

“On a Saturday morning when the tide is really low, I get out there with a rake and do really big sand art. You’re out there swishing around and it’s like you’re painting with your body. I even take a rake over to Spain when I go.”

To create the mural at the Homemaker Centre, Mr Bordonaro began with a table, chair, coffee mug and vase to represent the furniture and lifestyle offerings at the centre.

“That was the centrepiece and they said, ‘maybe we could just represent our lifestyle around it’.

“So I did lifesaving, Point Cartwright, whales, a bit of the hinterland, people being active, a person on a bicycle. I just wanted to tie it all in. If you look at it, it all joins up.

They were really happy with it.

“I love using my hands and getting grubby and sweaty,” he says.

“Just the sense when you finish a piece – it’s so satisfying. You get totally lost in it. It’s quite daunting when you do the big murals, because I know what’s involved to get it to where I need it to be. Some of them take a few months. You step back and go, did I just do that? How did that happen? It’s really rewarding and I love it.”

in Nambour, I had the students help me and they really enjoyed it. They really come out of their shells. They’re quite shy when we first meet and they think they’re going to muck it up. I say ‘no, it’s only paint’ and I guide them.”

Mr Bordonaro has always liked art and even as a child, knew it’s what he would do for a living. He had an arty mum and was aware he could make a living from being creative and doing something he loved.

“I’m pretty blessed,” he says.

“My first mural was in Melbourne. I might have been about eight or 10 years old and I painted a big mural of the Keep Australia Beautiful campaign they had running in the ’70s. It was on the side of a post office.

“My big breakthrough here was probably five years ago, when I did a big mural for the Sunshine Coast Council in Caloundra. It was an abstract depiction of my life growing up in Caloundra at the top of Kings Beach. It’s part of the Sunshine Coast mural trail.”

Mr Bordonaro also runs a graphic design business and with his wife Rhonda regularly travels to their favourite place, Spain. They love flamenco and Mr Bordonaro draws inspiration from the creative ambience there.

A keen surfer and beach lover, you’ll often find him down at Happy Valley creating sand art.

Australia’s great train trip turns 90 An important part of Australia’s pioneering story, The Ghan now offers a luxurious cruise through the heart of this beautiful nation. WORDS: Tim Dornin, AAP.

N

inety years ago it was the lifeblood of the South Australian outback, a vital link between the city and rural communities from Adelaide to Alice Springs.

Now, The Ghan is a destination and a cultural experience in itself, and one of the nation’s leading tourist attractions as it winds its way north and south across the continent.

The train marked nine decades of operations this month with a special service that left Adelaide for Darwin on August 4.

The commemorative departure offered a tribute to The Ghan’s history and celebrated its evolution into one of the world’s great train journeys. But while The Ghan is officially 90 years old, its genesis actually stretches back further into the early years of the South Australian colony.

In the mid-1800s a desire by the early settlers to push out into the state’s outback where there were no roads and no railways prompted the rise of the cameleers, camel drivers largely drawn from India, Persia and Afghanistan. Their animals, mostly brought

to Australia from the subcontinent, could handle the heat and were vital in bringing mail, food, water, tools and equipment to remote towns and pastoral holdings.

They also played an important role in major infrastructure projects including the completion of the overland telegraph in 1872. So by the time the first rail lines in South Australia’s north were laid in the late 1800s, it was little surprise the locals referred to the new service as The Afghan Express.

Over the next 30 to 40 years the railway pushed further north, but it was not until 1929 that Adelaide and Alice Springs were finally linked and the first Ghan service was launched, the name a clear nod to its pioneering history.

In the years that followed, The Ghan grew in popularity and during World War II was called into military service, moving troops and supplies across the country. The idea of a truly transcontinental railway had long been on the federal government’s agenda, but it was not until 2001 that the project to finally link Alice Springs to Darwin began, taking

three years to finish at a cost of $1.3 billion.

The completion of the near 3000-kilometre line that stretches from the Adelaide suburbs through Australia’s vast desert outback up to the country’s tropical north is a key factor in its changing status over the past 15 years.

One person who has witnessed that change firsthand is train manager Dean Duka, who has worked on The Ghan for 29 years. Mr Duka started as a silver boy, a glamorous title but actually the most junior position on the train as the one responsible for cleaning all the knives, forks and spoons.

From there he graduated to apprentice chef and qualified chef before stepping out of the kitchen and into a managerial role in 2008.

Mr Duka says when he started on The Ghan it was still, to some extent, just “a way to get from A to B”. But over the years the trickle of passengers picked up at various country towns has disappeared, along with some of the towns themselves.

“Now we’re a high-end, world-class luxury journey,” he says. “It’s an amazing

holiday. It’s more about the experience.”

And that has changed the type of people who come aboard. Its travellers, both local and international, have the time to take the slower ride across the country and tick a great train journey off their list.

Managing director Stephen Kernaghan describes The Ghan as the “cruise ship of the desert” and a unique opportunity for travellers to experience the vastness of the Australian outback.

“To see the diversity of the desert environment is something people never forget,” he says. “When you go by plane you see it from above, like a canvas. But when you drive through it you really can appreciate it.

“There’s nothing like immersing people in such a stark and beautiful space. The Ghan does that in spades.”

Mr Duka believes rail remains the best way to travel across Australia. “If you really want to have a good look at this country, do it through the window of a train.”

REGIONAL QUEENSLAND TO GET FASTER INTERNET Regional Queensland residents will get access to faster, cheaper internet using the state-owned fibre-optic network. The tech scheme will use an enormous amount of spare capacity along 6000 kilometres of fibre-optic cable, which was installed throughout regional Queensland to service state-owned corporations. State-owned entity Fibreco will lease the capacity to internet retail service providers. More than 600,000 homes and businesses from the Sunshine Coast to Cairns will benefit. The network also stretches inland as far as Emerald, Roma and Toowoomba. Innovation Minister Kate Jones says, “You should get the same quality service as someone in Brisbane, for the same price. Increasing competition in the backhaul market will lead to more internet service providers entering the regional market.”

A

bombshell was revealed to me in the past week that upset me greatly. Patrick Swayze does not sing Hungry Eyes from Dirty Dancing. I have spent the past 30 years of my life safe in the knowledge Johnny Castle, the dance instructor with great guns and even better gyrating hips, sings the steamy love ballad to Baby in between tango sessions, carrying watermelons to secret dance parties, and learning dance lifts in remote lakes while wearing white and wet singlets.

My world was rocked when I found out Eric Carmen sings Hungry Eyes. I think I just wanted Johnny – I mean Patrick Swayze – to be singing it so I just kind of tricked my mind into believing it is true. But it also makes perfect sense Patrick Swayze would sing it. I mean, how stupid to outsource the most steamy song of the movie when the main star can sing. And dance. Oh Patrick!

It is akin to outsourcing Danny from Grease singing You’re The One That I Want. I was last this upset in relation to the music world when I found out Milli Vanilli were lip syncing Blame It On The Rain. My heart cracked in two that day. As if this reality bombshell wasn’t tough enough to deal with, we are all facing the tricky world every day of our lives of untangling misheard song lyrics.

There is a word for when you mishear song lyrics: mondegreen. These are the top three misheard song lyrics of all time

according to the world wide web.

The number one song is Bad Moon Rising by Creedence Clearwater Revival.

Mondegreen: “There’s a bathroom on the right.” Should be: “There’s a bad moon on the rise.” Song two is Purple Haze by Jimi Hendrix. The mondegreen is: “Scuse me while I kiss this guy.” “It should be: “Scuse me while I kiss the sky.” And song number three is Stairway To Heaven by Led Zeppelin. The mondegreen is: “And there’s a wino down the road” but it should be, “And as we wind on down the road.”

We all do it, sing completely incorrect song lyrics and I think sometimes our own lyrics are better than the original. “Cheap wine and a three-day-growth” by Cold Chisel? Well, our family belt out “Cheap wine and three gay goats” because we think we are a bit funny. The first line of Cheap Wine is actually “Once I smoked a Danneman cigar”. Who else always thought it was: “Once I smoked a dynamite cigar?”

I have always been really bad at mishearing song lyrics. And did anyone else spend years singing: “Why did you give up on miso soup” instead of “me so soon?” when it came to Bernard Fanning’s Wish You Well?

led a fairly sheltered childhood.

A childhood of innocence and perhaps even naivety. But you know what? That was okay, because as I’ve come to learn, innocence is a trait that we lose quite quickly, and innocence – ignorance, however you would like to coin it – is bliss.

As a mother, I had hoped to retain my son’s blissful innocence for as long as I possibly could. Sadly, last weekend we made the tough decision to somewhat shatter his protective shelter.

The irony isn’t lost on me: a happy family moment halted by an ugly reality. As we stood on the edge of the Landsborough train station – our son excitedly watching a passenger train come to a halt – my husband reached out, grabbed my arm and pulled me towards him. His eyes wide he pointed to the ground where, a mere centimetre or two away from where my sandaled foot had been, a used syringe shattered our bubble.

Our eagle-eyed son had noted the incident, and so the questions ensued.

We were faced with a difficult scenario – casually brush the incident off, or invite the first crack into our five-year-old’s innocence.

We chose the latter. Education over ignorance. “That was a dangerous needle,’’ we explained. “And if you ever see anything like this, you are to move away quickly without touching it and tell an adult immediately.” Our little boy, face serious, nodded emphatically.

Unfortunately, we weren’t the only

people faced with this issue that same day.

At the popular Grahame Stewart Park in Currimundi, two used syringes were found partly buried in the sand of the playground.

And, only this week, yet another used syringe was found; this time at the edge of the popular Currimundi Lake.

Arguments around the illness of addiction aside, this behaviour is inexcusable, and selfish. Public bathrooms around the region are fitted with disposable boxes, while various organisations offer harm reduction centres and needle and

If you do find a syringe, the Department of Health recommends contacting the local council. If you choose to dispose of it yourself, the recommendation is to find a hard plastic container with a screw top lid (such as a juice or soft drink bottle) and scoop the syringe up by the barrel – staying away from the sharp end, and contact council for collection.

To think we can change people’s actions is naïve. It is an issue that we will continue to face, and as parents all we can do is remain vigilant.

Ultimately, Just Eat It has its strengths, but it won’t be everyone’s cup of tea.

Makes 10 INGREDIENTS • 3 cups grated carrot • 3 cups grated zucchini • 3 pinches seaweed salt • 3 eggs • 3 tsp coriander powder • 1 cup chopped coriander • 1 cup cheddar cheese, grated • ¼ cup buckwheat flour • 1 tsp turmeric powder • Coconut oil or butter

METHOD Put the grated carrot and zucchini into a bowl and sprinkle the salt over the top. Allow this to sit for a few minutes. After this time, some of the water from the vegetables will be drawn out because of the salt. Discard the water (roughly ¼ cup).

Now add the remaining ingredients, apart from the coconut oil or butter, to the bowl and mix together to combine.

Heat a large frying pan over medium heat and add some coconut oil or butter and allow it to melt and cover the entire pan.

Add three dollops of the batter into the pan, evenly spaced apart to create three fritters. Cook each side until golden brown and cooked through.

When they’re they’ cooked, place them onto a plate.

Continue cooking the fritters in batches and adding butter or coconut oil co to the frying pan pa as needed.

When they’re they’ ready to serve, enjoy.

“Any movement is better than no movement,” she says. “Over 55s, especially over 60s, find their lives revolve around the house, the kids, perhaps the grandkids – who tend to keep them at least slightly active.”

But they probably need to do more.

“It starts with wellbeing,” says Ms Reinhard. “Of course you can take the dog for walks but the dog needs to stop for piddle, a sniff around.

“Really, you need a goal. I, for example, run classes for those with a goal.”

She says there’s also an emotional side to exercise, particularly among the over 55s.

“I see them [clients] making new friends, which is also part of their wellbeing journey,” she says. “It’s healthy.

“Exercise keeps people out of institutions and helps them take control of their own lives. Exercise for seniors should be as important as sleeping.”

t’s becoming a cliche but like all cliches there’s some truth there: fitness is not only about adding years to your life, it’s about adding life to your years.

If you had a personal best, you’re not going to reproduce it in your twilight years.

The best, longest, fastest, heaviest and highest are going to stay right where they are – in the past. But that doesn’t mean the 55-plus are, or should be, mere onlookers in the world of exercise.

And the fitness industry hasn’t been at all slow to catch on and catch up.

A Google search will bring up page after page of gyms and fitness programs tailored to over 55s – everything from miracle cures to the elixir of life. Don’t be fooled.

There’s no easy way to get the heart

beating slower and the lungs working more efficiently. All involve effort of some sort.

The most popular is walking. It’s free and, mostly, pleasurable but with so many of us time-challenged in what should be our resting years there are all manner of options for getting fit and, more importantly, staying that way.

Most fitness experts seem to agree that 150 minutes of exercise a week is important for seniors who, probably without being aware of it, have been living in deteriorating bodies since their mid-30s.

Sunshine Coast Council offers its Healthy Sunshine Coast Seniors program in partnership with Resolve Fitness.

Designed for people aged over 55, the fitness class costs $2 per person and is

held every Wednesday in Caloundra.

Council also supports a range of low-cost senior classes across the Coast, including aqua fitness, strength and stability, balance and core.

Or Google ‘exercise for seniors Sunshine Coast’ to find a host of options. Most involve a fee so don’t be shy to ask.

Ruth Reinhard of Health Thru Fitness is a comparative latecomer to the fitness industry who has definite views about the need to stay active in later years. Made redundant at age 57 from the Queensland public service, she contemplated her future and decided to take control – something she strongly advocates for the seniors who now attend her individual sessions and group classes.

Myth 1: There’s no point to exercising. I’m going to get old anyway.

Fact: Exercise and strength training helps you look and feel younger and stay active longer. Regular physical activity lowers your risk for a variety of conditions, including Alzheimer’s and dementia, heart disease, diabetes, certain cancers, high blood pressure and obesity. Not only can exercise help stem the decline in strength and vitality that comes with age, it can improve it. And the mood benefits of exercise can be just as great at 70 or 80 as they were at 20 or 30.

Myth 2: Older people shouldn’t exercise.

They should save their strength and rest.

Fact: Research shows that a sedentary lifestyle is unhealthy for adults over 50.

Inactivity often causes older adults to lose the ability to do things on their own and can lead to more hospitalisations, doctor visits, and use of medicines for illnesses.

Myth 3: Exercise puts me at risk of falling down.

Fact: Regular exercise, by building strength and stamina, prevents loss of bone mass and improves balance, actually reducing your risk of falling.

Myth 4: It’s too late. I’m already too old to start exercising.

Fact: You’re never too old to start exercising and improve your health! In fact, adults who take up exercise later in life often show greater physical and mental improvements than their younger counterparts. If you’ve never exercised before, or it’s been a while, you won’t be encumbered by the same sports injuries that many regular exercisers experience in later life. In other words, there aren’t as many miles on your clock so you’ll quickly start reaping the rewards. Just begin with gentle activities and build up from there.

Myth 5: I’m disabled. I can’t exercise sitting down.

Fact: Chair-bound people face special challenges but can lift light weights, stretch and do chair aerobics, chair yoga, and chair Tai Chi to increase range of motion, improve muscle tone and flexibility, and promote cardiovascular health. Many swimming pools offer access to wheelchair users and there are adaptive exercise programs for wheelchair sports such as basketball.

A

monstrous task for a hoarder is opening up the old shortbread tins and assorted other boxes that contain a lifetime’s memories – letters, postcards, tickets, cards for every occasion and children’s messages to mum.

Well, it’s not actually opening the boxes so much, as deciding it’s time for it to go.

After all, why continue to have it taking up space when the kids no doubt are going to ditch the lot when you’re gone?

It seemed a worthy occupation for an overcast and chilly winter’s day, so I finished my morning coffee, dragged out the big plastic bin containing the various memory boxes, and set to work.

Had I really saved every letter from my mother while I was living in Europe during the late 1970s and early 1980s? I didn’t recall her being such a prolific writer either.

But there they were – piles of flimsy blue airmail letters and fat envelopes filled with foolscap pages of news from home.

My mother died 15 years ago, but I recognised her handwriting and once again I could hear her voice.

I also gained new respect for my younger brother. As a 14-year-old he had painstakingly typed a letter – heavily edited for typos, spelling and grammar (I suspect by Mum) – and handwritten at least two others

with apologies that he only sent me one for every two from me. I certainly appreciated his advice: “I still think you could get blown up at work in London, so don’t”.

I took a photo of it and sent it off to him.

He asked me to keep it safe so he could read about what he was doing in 1978.

“I’ve kept it safe for 40 years. I’m sure I can manage another few weeks,” I replied.

Next were bundles of postcards filled with the names and places from another time. Messages of the comings and goings of young travellers; a lot only vague memories but others worthy of a text message to the friends who had sent them – a snapshot of their life recorded for them.

Cards signed by various colleagues as I had left various jobs, payslips for $60 a week, references, certificates, and glitter spilling from Mother’s Day cards written

“My mother died 15 years ago, but I recognised her handwriting” by young hands. They were all there.

And so the sun set on a nostalgic journey.

The neatly sorted boxes were sealed and placed back in their big plastic bin and safely returned to their space.

The value of letters and licking a stamp cannot be underestimated.

And the rubbish bin didn’t need emptying. There were only three cards (each with just a name inside), one aerogram (I didn’t recognise the name of the sender) and two receipts inside.

Retirement matters QUESTION: How do I know if I have enough money to retire on?

ANSWER: Here is an overview of a simple* five-step calculation you can use to determine if you’re likely to have enough income and savings to cover your expenses in retirement.

1. What are your total annual contributions to retirement savings?

2. Multiply that number by the number of years left until retirement.

3. Add your current retirement savings to that number.

4. Divide by the number of years you expect to live in retirement.

5. Add that to any other guaranteed sources of income.

When you are done with the calculation, compare the answer to your current annual expenses to see if the amount you projected to have is enough to cover the living expenses you normally have.

There is a bit more to it than just this calculation, but this little five-step plan will give you some idea. (*This example will not address inflation, investment returns or losses.)

If you are experiencing debilitating osteoarthritis pain in your hip and you’ve tried everything, a total hip replacement can restore function and decrease pain.

The contemporary approaches for hip replacement surgery are posterior, anterolateral and the anterior minimally invasive approach. When performed well, all of these are likely to have an excellent result.

My preference is to perform the anterior, minimally invasive approach for nearly all hip replacements. This is a technique that I teach to other surgeons and am quite passionate about. My preference is due to the potential benefits of less pain, quicker recovery, lower dislocation risk and a smaller scar. Obviously, all approaches have potential complications as well.

With your GP, choose a surgeon who is highly skilled in their preferred approach, not based on which approach they perform. Your surgeon should make you feel comfortable with their recommended approach.

Always ask your surgeon the number of these procedures they perform and their outcomes. Never be afraid to ask for a second opinion if you are not comfortable.

Radiation therapy has changed dramatically over the years. Our ability to precisely target an area for treatment and avoid healthy surrounding structures has resulted in improved tumour control with reduced side effects for patients.

Stereotactic radiotherapy (SRT) is the cutting-edge technique used to treat small tumours in either the brain, with stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) or in the lung, spine, liver and bone, with stereotactic ablative body radiotherapy (SABR).

For suitable patients, stereotactic radiotherapy may be offered instead of surgery and is minimally invasive, with treatments often complete within three to eight sessions.

With this treatment now available close to home on the Sunshine Coast, patients can avoid lengthy travel to and from Brisbane for treatment during the already overwhelming time of a cancer diagnosis.

Where there’s a Will…

This week’s article is the first in a series detailing strategies a Will-maker can adopt to reduce the likelihood of (or perhaps entirely prevent) a challenge being made to their estate.

Sadly, there are often disputes over the distribution of a person’s estate.

This is particularly the case where the Will-maker’s family involves a second marriage and the interests of a second spouse, biological children and stepchildren.

Owning land as a ‘joint tenant’ can be a useful estate planning tool available to Will-makers to reduce the impact of any possible challenge.

Jointly owned land does not form part of the estate of the first joint owner to pass away. The deceased owner’s share simply automatically passes to the other surviving owner(s) and is not exposed to challenge.

There is no stamp duty payable on a transaction which transfers from one spouse to the other, an interest in residential land if, after the transfer, the land will be owned as joint tenants and will be their principal residence.

Falling risks

Wonderful ear wax

Are you medications increasing your risk of falls? Medications that cause adverse effects such as drowsiness, dizziness, blurred vision, confusion or postural hypotension increase the risk of falling. The more medications you take, the higher the risk.

Medicines of concern may include: Benzodiazepines (such as Temazepam, Oxazepam, Diazepam) – medications used to help you sleep or reduce anxiety can increase your risk of falls by up to 50 per cent. If you have been taking these medications for a long time people feel they can’t sleep without them. However, after four weeks of regular use they lose their effectiveness. A slow reduction plan is required with long-term use to reduce rebound insomnia.

Antipsychotics (Risperidone, Quetiapine) – when used to treat behaviours in dementia.

Opioids (Morphine, Oxycodone, Tapentadol, Tramadol) – can cause drowsiness and confusion.

Anti-hypertensives – if you are on multiple blood pressure medications and have been on them for years, they may not all be necessary. Sometimes they can cause your blood pressure to drop too much when you stand up, causing dizziness and falls.

If you’re on a number of medications and have been on them for a long time, ask you pharmacist for a MedsCheck or to organise a Home Medicine Review to check if your medications are increasing your risk of falls.

Earwax, or cerumen, is really important stuff.

It protects the skin of the human ear canal, assists in cleaning and lubrication, and provides some protection against bacteria, fungi, insects and water. The body cleans the ear canal using a ‘conveyor belt’ process of epithelial migration, aided by the movement of your jaw. The cerumen is moved along with this process, taking with it sweat and foreign matter towards the entrance of the ear canal where it typically dries and flakes off or is cleaned away. However, as we get older this migration of wax tends to become less efficient and can lead to a build-up of wax which needs to be removed manually.

• In medieval times, earwax and other substances were used to prepare pigments used by scribes to illustrate manuscripts.

• The 1832 edition of the American Frugal Housewife said that “nothing was better than earwax to prevent the painful effects resulting from a wound by a nail [or] skewer”; and also recommended earwax as a remedy for cracked lips.

• Before waxed thread was commonly available, a seamstress would use her own earwax to stop the cut ends of threads from fraying.

If a denture becomes loose it will exert an uneven force and that will result in increased bone loss in areas of greater pressure.

Using denture adhesive should be seen as a short term solution and you should visit your dental prosthetist to assess your dentures for a possible reline. Your prosthetist can reline your dentures the same day. Denture relines can be made in hard or soft material depending on what suits your mouth best.

FILM HIGHLIGHTS SENIORS’ CONCERNS The filmed version of a play produced by Suncoast Community Legal Service provides information about wills and enduring powers of attorney within a fictional narrative while exploring the subtleties of financial elder abuse.

Piano Forte follows 78-year-old Eliza. Her grandson, Robert, is her carer and enduring power of attorney. Robert’s wife Lucy is Julian Porter, principal pregnant, and she wants it all solicitor, Suncoast – a career, a baby, a house and Community Legal Service. a supportive husband. But where is Robert when she needs him most? Will the competing pressures of his inter-generational responsibilities lead Robert to make a choice he may regret forever?

In keeping with the musical reference that is the title of the production, Eliza finds herself ‘played’ by the dynamics of

life. But a fateful event steels her to take stock and overcome her vulnerabilities.

“The themes arising from these areas of the law are ripe for storytelling,” Suncoast Community Legal Service principal solicitor Julian Porter says. “Trust, money, power, responsibility and family conflict. Audiences really get a great insight into how easily circumstances and temptation can get the better of someone, even with the best of intentions, and how important it is to put some safeguards in place.”

Mr Porter says since the original production of the play in 2017 and a run of film screenings last year, Piano Forte has “taken off”. “Seniors legal services from Mackay to the Gold Coast have used it to get the precautionary message across,” he says. “NSW Legal Aid screened it in 17 regional and metropolitan libraries. It even got a run in the Blue Mountains a few weeks back. It will be great to bring it home to Maroochydore for Seniors Week 2019.”

The free film screening is on August 20 at 9.30am at the Maroochy RSL and will be followed by a facilitated discussion about issues raised in the film. Morning tea is provided.

With the pick of the bunch, the seller was able to select the most attractive terms of sale and the property was sold on August 6 for $475,000. “[The sellers] were really quite blown away with the amount of people through the house and they were ecstatic with the final result they got, which was to be able to choose the cleanest terms of sale with a 21-day contract pending building and pest inspections,” Mr Thomas says.

“I have had quite a few like that recently.

In Rainforest Sanctuary, there was a property

with sellers seeking offers over $845,000. We had 16 groups through to inspect on the first weekend and ended up with six offers.

“The seller was once again in a position to choose and they were able to get $870,000 cash for the property with a 30-day settlement.”

Mr Thomas says Sunshine Coast property continues to represent value to both owner-occupiers and investors, who are looking for great buys that have great capital gains potential.

“It’s onwards and upwards for the Sunshine Coast, with a property [market] that is growing so rapidly and continuing to attract new investments and projects. It’s creating more and more competition for good property,” he says.

“The Coast has experienced a couple of really good years in the property market. At the start of this year through to the election, it had become hard to selling anything. We were back to being a buyers’ market and they

could name their terms. But since the election, sales have gone through the roof again and we are firmly back to a sellers’ market again. Sellers can command better prices again due to confidence in our market here on the Coast.”

Although demand for property remains high, Mr Thomas says there are a few key things for sellers to keep in mind in order to maximise their chance of getting the best possible price for their property.

“You need to use all of the different means of marketing, from print to websites and social media,” he says.

“When it comes to print, running threeto four-week campaigns works best and any properties worth over $1 million should aim for full-pages ads, while those in the $500,000 to $900,000 range look best on half pages.

“By coupling this up with premiere online listings, distributing auction invites to the neighbourhood and contacting people on our database, we want to cause a frenzy in the first week or two on the market and generate as much excitement around each listing as we can.

“When you get that competition cranking, you can really get a great result.”

So they have started! Yep, whales are being spotted off the coast heading south so time to crack out that stand-up or kayak.

A few years ago my mother told me of a sinking yacht off Moffat Beach. She saw the white sails disappear then reappear.

About this time of the story I informed her she had spotted Migaloo the white whale – ha ha.

Won’t be much surf around but conditions for whale watching are prime.

Oh and Teahupo’o starts next week.
