T

he first time I had to inject insulin into my own stomach, I took a deep breath, closed my eyes and prayed it wouldn’t hurt. I also prayed that it would do its job in normalising my blood glucose levels.

I was heavily pregnant, and the only hope of keeping my baby intact for the next five weeks, was to control the gestational diabetes.

Up until that point, weekly sessions with a specialist, a stringent diet and swimming had controlled the issue, but as my pregnancy progressed, so did the disease. Thankfully, my son was born without complications, but that experience left me with a clearer understanding of diabetes and the risks it imposes on our bodies, and the wider community.

Around 1.7 million Australians live with some form of diabetes. Alarmingly, 500,000 people are unaware they are suffering from type 2, which is brought on by poor diet and lack of exercise. Despite money and resources being thrown at the problem, it is now listed among Australia’s top 10 causes of death.

In the lead-up to National Diabetes Week, we take a look at the disease and ways to minimise your risk.

HIGH FLYER Where do you live? I live in Ocean Grove, Victoria with my son and daughter-in-law and am currently spending the winter in Cotton Tree.

If you could change one thing on the Sunshine Coast, what would it be? Plant more trees, especially on the foreshore.

First job? A factory hand in an electrical transformer business, age 17, earning 14 shillings and six pence per week for a five-and-a-half day week.

Best day in your life and why? Meeting my lovely wife Joan. Our first date was a picnic and I proposed to her and she said yes! A recent highlight was meeting the two sons of my wartime mate and co-pilot John Bull (deceased) and consequently travelling to Kiama in New South Wales and going to the HARS Aviation Museum and sitting in the cockpit of a Black Cat (Catalina flying boat).

Your family includes? My wife Joan (deceased), four boys and one daughter, 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

First car? 1928 Buick Tourer. Subsequent cars included a Holden FJ, Morris Minors, Holden EK, Holden EJ, Holden HD X2, Holden HQ, Monaro, SLR Torana, Mitsubishi Cordia, Holden Gemini, Holden HR, VP Commodore wagon.

Favourite book? The Bible.

Allen Cover served as a World War II Catalina pilot and says this period of his life was “full of amazing experiences with lots of travel”, much of it in South Africa where he flew around the Cape of Good Hope submarine spotting. He lives in Victoria and is currently spending his seventh winter in Cotton Tree. Born on July 13, 1919 in South Australia, Allen Cover will this week celebrate his 100th birthday.

What are you reading now? King of the Air by Ann Blainey. I even attended the book launch/signing two months ago and was asked to speak, as I was there at Eagle Farm in 1928 when Charles Kingsford Smith landed.

Your greatest regret? I don’t have any, but maybe selling my orange Monaro?

What achievement are you most proud of? I was a foundation member of Gideons International in 1956 and am still a member. It took 20 years to distribute one million Bibles. Now the figure is 17 million.

I have been to many countries (during WWII) on trains, planes and ships, including the Queen Mary and Mauretania. My first journey was to Rhodesia with EATS (Empire Air Training Scheme) and then Scotland.

If your life was a book, what would be the title? The Endless Journey to Eternity.

Favourite song and why? I love all the classics – Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert.

When was the last time you played sport and what was it? I play golf once a week and drive my golf cart to the local Ocean Grove course, where I am now an honorary member. I’m having a rest from golf now whilst up here.

What is your favourite place on the Sunshine Coast and why? Cotton Tree – Chateau Royale. Sandy, Simon and Jaime are wonderful hosts.

You are happiest when? I am happiest when I’m around family and friends.

A troublesome turtle has brought a passenger plane to a grinding halt after it decided to catch some rays at the Gold Coast Airport.

Jetstar first officer James Fuller was forced to pull up his Airbus A320 when he spotted the critter, believed to be a saw-shell turtle, enjoying a sunbaking session on the side of the tarmac last Thursday.

The plane had been taxiing towards its take-off point when Mr Fuller and Captain Nigel Waccura realised the lump they’d spotted off the right wing was actually alive.

They quickly pulled up and applied the park brake before informing passengers that the lazy reptile was holding up their travel plans.

“We radioed the tower and apparently it was the second time he’d been up there that day,” Mr Fuller told AAP on Friday.

“He was about a foot long. With the cooler weather he was enjoying a sunbake out there on the tarmac. So we just put the park brake on.

“The captain made an address to the passengers just letting them know why we’d stopped. I think a few of them were up trying to take photos out the window.”

A safety car was sent out to relocate the turtle to a nearby creek, and pilots are now keeping a keen eye out in case he returns.

A sign of the times In the lead-up to National Diabetes Week, which is held from July 14-20, we investigate the nation’s silent killer, and the warning signs no one can afford to ignore.

nlike many people with type 2 diabetes, Maleny’s Debbie Rossow wasn’t surprised when she was diagnosed with the disease that affects 1.7 million Australians.

Type 1 diabetes featured in her family and for that reason, she had been having regular blood tests to monitor her blood glucose levels. She was diagnosed with pre-diabetes 20 years ago, but it wasn’t until last year she was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.

“It’s worrying, even when you are expecting it,” she says. “I have relatives who have had type 1 diabetes who have had terrible things happen. My uncle lost his vision and both legs below the knee. They’re scary things and you hope that being careful with eating, you can avoid it.”

Ms Rossow maintains a healthy diet and tries to stay active despite suffering chronic pain from a number of other health issues, and due to her family history, takes Metformin to help keep her blood glucose levels down. The biggest lesson she’s learnt through navigating the illness is how important it is to educate yourself, because not every health practitioner will give the right advice for your specific needs.

“I’d been on Metformin for about a month and the doctor said the normal process is to go up to two tablets. I said I wanted to have a test first, rather than just keep increasing the medication. I had a test and it showed I was below seven.”

The international standard way of measuring blood glucose levels is in terms of a molar concentration, measured in mmol/L (millimoles per litre). A fasting blood sugar level from 5.6 to 6.9 mmol/L is considered prediabetes. If it’s seven mmol/L or higher on two separate tests, you have diabetes.

With her diet of green smoothies, soups and salads, it wasn’t food that made the major difference in Ms Rossow’s case – it was medication. However, she had to challenge both doctors and dieticians to find the right treatment for her case. “I’m all about being proactive and advocating for yourself,” she

I know my own body and I know what I can and can’t do. You have to be your own advocate in some cases because you can’t rely on every doctor or support professional to be able to consider the complexities of each individual.

Something else she’s learned is how important it is to confront the disease head on. “Some people would prefer to live in the dark with it and pretend it doesn’t exist, until suddenly they get hit with something major that’s gone wrong.

“It’s a natural human response to flee from it, to not want to know. For me, I’ve

says. “Just because people tell you something from a medical field, it doesn’t mean you have to agree with it. You can challenge it and ask for a second opinion. I wasn’t happy with my first dietician – she was rude and told me to eat foods I knew I was allergic to, like gluten. So I found another one.

“It wasn’t that I was being dogmatic in my ideas; it was that I’d been well-informed and

always known it was a possibility because of my family, so I’ve always had checks.”

Diabetes is the fastest growing chronic illness in Australia. According to Diabetes Australia, one Australian is diagnosed with type 2 diabetes every five minutes, and it costs the country $6 billion a year. Globally, diabetes killed 1.6 million people in 2016 and was the seventh biggest global killer,

according to the World Health Organisation.

Of the three main forms of diabetes – type 1, type 2 and gestational – type 2 is by far the most prevalent, representing 85 to 90 per cent of all cases. It usually develops in adults over the age of 45 years, but is increasingly occurring in younger age groups, including children.

According to a recent study by The University of Edinburgh, the chance of children developing type 2 diabetes more than triples if their mothers are obese during pregnancy.

Most concerning is that hundreds of thousands of people have undiagnosed type 2 diabetes, which could lead to a host of health problems, from blindness to amputation or heart disease, if left untreated.

Diabetes is a chronic disease characterised by high levels of glucose in the blood. Blood sugar levels are controlled by insulin, a hormone produced by the pancreas. Diabetes occurs when the pancreas is unable to produce enough insulin, or the body becomes resistant to insulin, or both.

It’s called the silent killer because its symptoms are easy to miss, or pass off as something less sinister. Symptoms include weight loss, frequent urination, excessive thirst and hunger, fatigue, irritability, blurred vision, slow wound healing and nausea.

The good news is most people can manage type 2 diabetes by following a nutritious diet and staying active.

The Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service (SCHHS) provides free information sessions for people diagnosed with type 2 diabetes or pre-diabetes. The workshop is designed to support participants to achieve their health goals and enable better management of their condition.

SCHHS healthy lifestyle co-ordinator Kerry Roach says: “Most people have a good understanding of what they need to do to lead a healthy lifestyle, so our sessions are designed to build on that and empower and motivate people to get on with the job.”

The information sessions include presentations from dietitians, social workers, nurses and health promotion officers. Participants can also access resources and links to further support in the local community.

“Leading a healthy lifestyle and having good management of blood glucose levels will assist a person with type 2 diabetes to reduce their risk of complications associated with the condition including blindness, kidney damage, amputations and heart attack,” Ms Roach says Information sessions are held regularly across the Sunshine Coast at Gympie, Maroochydore and Caloundra.

A DIETICIAN’S PERSPECTIVE: DALE COOKE

In 2016, diabetes caused 1.6 million deaths globally.

Dale Cooke is an accredited practicing dietician with Diabetes Queensland and travels the state running group education workshops. She says what’s so alarming about diabetes is that so many people are unaware they have it.

“In Queensland, we’ve got more than 100,000 people walking around with type 2 diabetes who don’t know it yet,” she says. “It can take quite a long time for the symptoms to become apparent. Often men, especially, don’t go to the doctor. They tend to suffer in silence.

“On the Sunshine Coast there are 13,000 people with type 2 diabetes and in Queensland overall, there are 215,000 living with it. That’s about one in four adults.”

Ms Cooke advises against fad diets in the management of diabetes type 2, and while plenty of people are getting good results with the keto and paleo diets, she is cautious.“The thing with something like the keto diet is it’s good for losing weight, but it’s not a sustainable way of eating. You can’t go out and meet a friend and have a meal and follow a keto diet, generally.

“Any fad diet isn’t recommended. We just recommend people eat healthy. Generally, we’d look to recommending the Australian dietary guidelines, which is two serves of fruit a day, five or more serves of vegetables, lean meat or vegetarian alternatives, nuts and legumes, lean dairy products and good fats, monounsaturated fats found in things like avocados and olives.

“Ideally you would minimise added sugars, cakes, biscuits and lollies. But you also have to recognise that a lot of our celebration food contains added sugars and added fats. It’s not the end of the world if you do have a slice of cake on your birthday if most of the time you’re eating healthy and aiming for 30 minutes of exercise a day… It’s when the extras form the basis of your diet that they become a problem.

“We would recommend people get a check with their GP, particularly if they’re over 40 years of age.”

CASE STUDY: RUSSELL SMITH Russell Smith is a 64-year-old bus driver and former truck driver from Eagleby. He spent years living on Coke, Pepsi, McDonald’s and KFC, driving trucks long distances and doing no exercise. The thought he could develop diabetes never occurred to him.

“I didn’t really care,” he says. “I couldn’t walk far because I was too overweight – around 130 kilos. My doctor told me to get off my big fat behind and do some exercise or he guaranteed I’d be dead in 18 months.

“He did a full blood work-up and said ‘this is what it should be, this is where you are – mate, you’re the walking dead’. I was shocked.

“I went to a dietician who took all my measurements, did a pinch test … and said, ‘you’re in bad shape’.”

Mr Smith subsequently cut out the junk food, began to hit the gym five days a week and now weighs 88 kilos.

“It was relatively easy actually. It has taken me from 2011 to now to lose that weight. I was drinking Coke like it was going out of fashion, eating KFC and Maccas.

I hardly ever sat down and had a decent meal with vegetables. Now I make sure I have potato, carrot and pumpkin mashed up with peas and cauliflower. If I have sausages, steak or chops, I make sure I have at least five vegetables. I don’t have time to go shopping for fruit, so I buy tins of fruit salad, but in the juice, not the syrup. I just have two or three dessert spoons of that. For lunch I have a sandwich with lettuce, ham, cheese, tomato and pickles.

“The last full blood count my doctor did, I was a four.

Anything over seven is classified diabetic. The doctor said, ‘… you’ll never get rid of the term diabetes, even through you’re a four. All you have to do is start eating all the wrong stuff and you’ll be back here’. I said ‘that will never happen’.”

Mr Smith says he could barely walk half a kilometre before he tuned his life around. Now he can walk 10 kilometres, despite injuries to his knees, shoulders and spine from three truck crashes. “I’ve still got pain, but it doesn’t hurt as much. All you have to do is eat properly, have a well-balanced diet and do your exercise. I used to be the laziest son of a gun out; I wouldn’t walk to save my own life. The way I look at it, if I can do it, anybody can do it. It’s just a case of wanting to do it.”

Literary buffs are preparing to get their annual fix at Voices on the Coast.

Immanuel Lutheran College and the University of the Sunshine Coast present the award-winning youth literature festival, which has been running since 1996. With more than 20 years’ experience cooking in some of the world’s best restaurants, both in Australia and overseas, the presenter of Channel 7 program Better Homes and Gardens (pictured at Yandina Station) visited the region last month to film a series of food-themed episodes. Coordinated and supported by Visit Sunshine Coast and Sunshine Coast Council, the crew filmed local vistas and met with home-grown producers to feature a selection of ingredients to cook up a unique recipe. “The most remarkable thing about the Sunshine Coast as a food destination is its unique combination of variety and world-beating quality,” Mr Halmagyi says. “From wild flavours, to artisan ingredients, to some breathtaking restaurant experiences, it’s a journey every gourmet needs to take.” Watched by around one million viewers each week, the Better Homes and Gardens episodes featuring the Coast aired on July 5 and 12. This initiative aims to tell the Sunshine Coast food story in the lead up to The Curated Plate, a new four-day destination food festival August 8 to 11.

ACADEMIC HAS GAME PLAN FOR SAFER HOLIDAY ROADS University of the Sunshine Coast road safety researcher Dr Bridie Scott-Parker (pictured) has proposed a new way to make family holiday road trips safer, more enjoyable, and valuable learning opportunities. Dr Scott-Parker, who is a senior research fellow and leader of USC’s Adolescent Risk Research Unit, is working towards developing a game she calls Spot the Signs. “This game encourages children to look out for and learn about different road signs. By doing this, they might even help their parents out by identifying signs that are new or unusual.” Dr Scott-Parker says she plans to seek funding to develop the game.

Ten community groups on the Sunshine Coast have shared in more than $300,000 worth of funding from Stockland’s 2019 Aura Community Grants program. The grants, ranging from $1500 to $50,000, were delivered at a special ceremony at Aura, with the funding to aid valuable community activities from festivals to beach clean-ups and conservation work, as well as helping young surf lifesavers obtain vital gear and qualifications. The program will see about $5 million of funding delivered to local organisations throughout the duration of the construction of the Aura community.

COAST MUM RAISES MONEY FOR DRY JULY Maroochydore’s Chelsea Barnard signed up for Dry July after her husband Sam was diagnosed with advanced stage 2B Hodgkin lymphoma in April, just before his 30th birthday. Doctors found a large mass in his chest, which was measuring 21 centimetres wide and pressing on his lungs and heart. Mr Barnard began six months of fortnightly chemotherapy.

In early July, the Barnards received the news that Mr Barnard is in remission and the cancer is showing to be completely inactive, having reduced in size by 70 per cent. T

he thought of having to swing a golf club in front of a crowd of onlookers on the Coast later this month is causing Alison Brahe-Daddo some grief, but the newest ambassador for charity organisation RizeUp is prepared to venture well outside her comfort zone to raise funds

for the organisation that supports women and families fleeing domestic violence.

While living in the US with her husband, actor Cameron Daddo, and their three children, the former model volunteered with a number of organisations to help underprivileged children from broken homes.

When they moved back to Australia, she came across RizeUp and felt an instant connection.

RizeUp not only drives awareness of domestic violence in communities but also works with refuges, agencies and services to provide life-changing support for families left with nothing but the clothes on their backs.

This includes creating new homes for victims, supporting children in their healing process and raising much-needed funds.

“Everything they were talking about and the actions they were taking were so impactful for the families they were helping, I instantly knew this is what I wanted to do,” Ms Brahe-Daddo says.

She signed up as a RizeUp volunteer and was then asked by CEO Nicolle Edwards if she and her husband, would become the charity’s first ‘Patron Pair’.

With intimate partner violence remaining one of the leading contributors to premature death for women aged 18 to 44, RizeUp has

engaged the couple to help them drive awareness of its mission to aid the many vulnerable families affected by family and domestic violence across the nation.

Ms Brahe-Daddo will take part in the Sunshine Coast Business Associates Charity Golf Day on July 19. Proceeds from the popular event will be donated to the Sunshine Coast Chapter of RizeUp Australia.

“One in four Australian children currently lives in a house of violence” “I’ve never played golf and my husband is always out there playing, so it’s tough that he is tied up with his show [stage comedy The True Blue Revue] and can’t come up with me,” she says.“I hope I don’t frustrate the actual golfers with my attempts to hit that little white thing around… But at the end of the day, it’s all about RizeUp.” She adds, “It breaks my heart that one in

four Australian children currently lives in a house of violence… it is a truly sad community issue so the unique work that RizeUp provides to support some of the most vulnerable people in society is unbelievable.

“I can’t even begin to understand what these families have been through, but we are fighting to give them a voice and whether I can help by bringing awareness, or making the beds in the families new home or talking to corporations about sponsorship, I will do it.”

Ms Edwards says a domestic violence order is broken three times each hour on average in Queensland. “RizeUp is encouraging locals to join in eradicating this unimaginable trauma by volunteering or donating, and for women and children currently impacted by violent relationships to know there is help available,” she says.

W

ith the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) cutting rates to one per cent for a second month in a row, the hunt for yield is even more difficult. In addition to this, globally bond yields are at all-time lows and term premium is virtually non-existent.

Our economists expect the RBA may cut the official cash rate to 0.5 per cent by mid-2020.

The reduction in rates forces those with savings to think harder about where to allocate their capital to earn them the most amount of income. Generally, in this scenario, capital will flow towards higher yielding sectors. Investors need to be aware, however, that this also generally involves accepting more risk.

Recently, however, the UK’s FTSE 100 Index has overtaken the S&P/ASX 200 Index in the yield stakes (based on one-year forward dividend yield), although Australia is still a highly attractive destination from an income perspective. This ‘yield appeal’ has, in our view, been an important factor in the year-to-date outperformance of the S&P/ASX 200 Index versus its offshore counterparts.

There is evidence of yield-seeking activity on the share registers of Australia’s major banks. Banking sector positioning in many portfolios is still deeply underweight, and with short interest falling, and accelerating ETF flows and high yields, there appears to be short-term tactical appeal in the sector.

hen Pauline Hanson made her maiden speech to the Australian Parliament in 1996, Benjamin Law was in his early teens, just commencing those awkward years of adolescence when most kids are desperate to be accepted by their peers.

Things were about to get a whole lot more awkward for Mr Law, an Asian Australian who grew up on the Sunshine

For his latest project, writer and journalist Benjamin Law explores our relationship with China through the lens of his own family history.

“I think it was the fist time I was politicised,” he says. “Someone in power was saying Asians don’t belong in Australia. We don’t assimilate. I thought, wow, this is where I was born. This is the accent I speak in, it’s one of the broadest Australian accents you’ll hear.

“I was one of the first Asian kids in my school and I started feeling like a conspicuous target. Before that I wasn’t bullied.”

In his best-selling memoir The Family Law, he wrote about growing up on the Coast with his Hong Kong-born parents and four siblings in his trademark witty, insightful way.

It was later adapted for TV and became a hit.

His new show, Dragon Down Under, promises to be every bit as entertaining and incisive as he delves into his cultural roots and explores the history of Australia’s relationship with China. As part of the filming, he returned to the Sunshine Coast to retrace his parents’ footsteps, who migrated here in 1975.

“They landed in Caloundra from Hong Kong – you couldn’t get a bigger contrast.

It was a culture shock, but my parents were really accepted by the local people. This was an age where the national conversation was about multiculturalism as a positive thing, but then the tone changed in the 1990s when multiculturalism became talked about as a negative thing and Asians were singled out.

“As a child of migrants and an Asian Australian kid, that’s when I became very conscious of my race for the first time.

“There were incidents of people yelling things at me from passing cars, which is always a nice thing to do to a child you don’t know,” he laughs. “My friends would say, ‘yeah I think Pauline Hanson is right’. I’d say, ‘but she says Asians don’t assimilate’. They’d say, ‘we don’t see you as Asian’. This is messed up.

You feel relief, but then you think, if you don’t see me as Asian, what do you see me as? I’m

not white. What they’re saying is being Asian is inherently bad and we don’t see you as bad.

That’s a brutal thing for a growing brain.”

The idea that Asians didn’t assimilate made no sense to Mr Law, who saw his parents and grandmother hit the ground running, opening their own restaurant, paying taxes and contributing to Australian society.

Dragon Down Under explores these cultural assumptions through the lens of his own family’s experience and confronts the anxieties that exist in Australia today about the growing influence of China on our shores.

“One of the takeaways from the documentary is Australia has an intimate but uneasy relationship with China and in a way, always has. Our economic past, present and future is dependent on China, but we’re also deeply different countries in terms of attitudes towards human rights and politics.”

In revisiting the Coast for the show, Mr Law is full of praise: “I hope people watch the show and see the Sunshine Coast as a region who came out and supported my parents at a time when there were very few people like them there,” he says. “They were pioneers in business and they could only do that because the Sunshine Coast came out and supported them.”

Dragon Down Under will air on the ABC on July 30 and August 6.

PARENTCRAFT VS MINECRAFT

Sami Muirhead is not one of those parents who dreads the school holidays – she loves every spare minute she spends with her children.

Richard O’Leary struggles with the age-old dilemma every parent must face: whether to let your children play Minecraft.

B

est part of my week? Making pancakes for my children while we were still in pyjamas at 10 am.

Having time to eat the pancakes (with three different toppings) and not even getting mad or flustered when one of my kids tipped over the entire canister of sugar all over the kitchen bench.

I had time to do the dishes and even put them away. My plates usually drip dry and I probably stunned the entire family as I hummed away to Cat Stevens and just felt all ‘nesty’. Okay. Nesty is probably not a word, but it should be. You know that feeling you get when you are just glad to be home fussing and clucking and doing normal things like washing and cooking dinner?

I don’t know about you, but sometimes my soul is so battered from my busy life, all I need is a dose of nesting to feel planted again. And I love the school holidays because I have more time to do the simple things with my beautiful kids and feel like I am not failing at this adulating gig.

It has become cool to criticise the kids being home during holidays and to whinge about the juggle and the effort to entertain kids. But not this little mother hen. I have always loved the change of routine the holidays bring to our clan. I love having my babies back home.

I love holiday me. Holiday me has time to cook a proper breakfast. Holiday me throws together meals for the slow cooker and feels like Nigella Lawson all day as the

house fills up with amazing smells of corned beef and apricot chicken bubbling away.

Holiday me takes time to collect the mail from the letterbox with the kids. Holiday me plants succulents with the kids. Holiday me has caught up on the folding and ironing.

Holiday me lights candles to make the home cosier. Holiday me even makes the kids’ beds happily. Holiday me has taken the kids to the library. Holiday me has sat and watched DVDs with the kids. I have so much more time without the school drop-off and without the extracurricular activities and I

I recently caught up with a friend who is a financial planner, and he told me 90 per cent of his elderly clients tell him their biggest regret is not spending more time with the kids. I know some of you are rolling your eyes, as the kids send you bonkers.

So I hope holiday you has been thriving too and making little memories for you and your kids along the way. And do not start thinking I am a changed woman forever, as when school returns next week, the beds will not be made until school holidays and my little bubble will be burst.

be Lincoln’s definition of a hypocrite was a man who murdered his parents, and then pleaded for mercy on the grounds that he was an orphan.

My definition is a little less dramatic – just be a parent for a day and the opportunity to expose your hypocrisy presents itself every few minutes.

I’d like to think I avoid the ‘do as I say, rather than do as I do’ most of the time, but I have uncovered a glaring exception to that saintliness in recent weeks.

My eldest son is obsessed with Minecraft. His conversations are populated with zombie pigmen, endermen, spider jockeys, creepers, slimes, silverfish and nether mobs.

My 10-year-old talks about how to make tools, weapon and armour, enchanting and earning experience points.

Not to mention his discussions about the finer points of creating a base camp, how to mine, and drawing a mud map of all the steps needed to build a beacon.

All this and he is yet to play the game.

He’s read every book he can find on Minecraft, and has obviously picked up some of the tactics because he’s waged a concerted campaign to overturn the ban on the game in our home.

Manoeuvres so far have included: seeking an amendment to the family rules, the introduction of a limited trial focussing just on the creative setting of the game, and

lastly checking out a book from the library called The Minecraft Guide for Parents – Down-To-Earth Advice for Parents of Children Playing Minecraft – and leaving it on my desk.

The strategies he’s learning are less than subtle, but persistence makes up for any possible lack of nuance. I read the book and I have to say, the game itself sounds inviting. I wouldn’t mind a crack at it myself. But it did little to allay my fears about its addictiveness.

Our family is a probably more wary on this subject than others, as we have seen someone close to us brought undone by an addiction to gaming.

This kid’s life ran completely off the rails – and that’s not a risk we are willing to take.

So we are yet to surrender to our son’s frontal assault, holding firm in our belief that it’s easier to keep the gate closed, rather than try and shut it once it’s been opened.

Which brings me back to the beginning.

Many times when my son has asked about Minecraft I’ve had to interrupt my interaction with fantasy footy, which I spend a lot of time playing on my phone.

Believe it or not, buying and selling rugby league players in a made-up competition against people I have never met can become compulsive.

Maybe I’m not scared of what my son may do if allowed to play Minecraft – maybe I’m thinking what I would have done?

THE UMBILICAL BROTHERS ARE COMING TO NOOSA The famous duo are back in Australia and ready to perform at NOOSA alive! WORDS: Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane.

T

he audiences of Australian comedians can often be classified quiet easily. Carl Barron will have a room full of ocker Aussies, while Kitty Flanagan attracts the high-brow ABC-consuming audience.

But when you turn up to an Umbilical Brothers show, you will find generations of families from all backgrounds ready to experience the duo’s unique fusion of physical and vocal comedy that has taken them to stadiums supporting Robin Williams, brought comedy audiences into the Sydney Opera House and seen them named as two of Entertainment Weekly’s 100 Most Creative People In Entertainment.

This is the environment David Collins and Shane Dundas, affectionately known as the ‘Umbies’, have spent 28 years creating.

They have performed in 38 countries and spend most of their time abroad with their acclaimed stage shows, and now they are

returning to the Sunshine Coast with one of their most beloved shows, SpeedMouse, as part of the NOOSA alive! festival.

Speaking to My Weekly Preview from Newcastle in the midst of creating their seventh stage show, Mr Collins says that although they created SpeedMouse 15 years ago, avid fans will be pleasantly surprised by how it has evolved, with new material and jokes added to keep it fresh for the duo and their fans alike.

Mr Collins says SpeedMouse is a liveaction, fast-paced, rewind, slow-motion, frame-by-frame adventure where two men create the impossible out of a microphone and a physical ability. “We stand on an empty stage and the audience has to use their imagination to go on this journey with us. It is the only one of our shows that has a Sixth Sense ending and the second time you watch it, you pick more things up,” he says.

“As soon as we came up with it, we knew

it was a special show. Don’t tell your friends if you’ve seen it before, ‘cause then you’d be a bit of a d*ck.”

The Umbilical Brothers have gained a fanatical toddler and college fan base with their television series The Upside Down Show, Disney’s The Book of Once Upon A Time, The Sideshow and Maisy.

They also work on solo projects when they appeal to them, which Mr Collins says has been the secret to their longevity.

“I recommend anyone in any kind of relationship, whether work or personal, get the hell away from each other once every month or so,” he says. “I really like doing other stuff and after 28 years in the industry, it is great for our minds to have the break away to do something else and then when you come back, the jokes feel new. Doing stuff separately and stuff together helps the relationship and helps the performances.”

Mr Collins says they return to Australia only to create new content and their work in progress, tentatively named Green, is unlike anything they have attempted before, using green screens, live action animation and audience participation that embodies the best elements of live theatre, a platform he says will always be dear to his heart.

The Umbilical Brothers will perform at The J on July 26 at 7.30pm as part of the NOOSA alive! festival, which will bring world-class musicians, authors, dancers, artists, food events and more to Noosa for an amazing 10 days of arts and culture from July 19 to July 28.

The festival will open with a free event on July 19 at Laguna Lookout from 4.30pm.

As the sun sets over Noosa, the festival will be opened with a talk from Dr Eve Fesl, performances from the Gubbi Gubbi Dancers and more.

From 6.30pm celebrations return to The J Theatre for an hour of free entertainment with Tane Tokorangi with drinks on the deck to warm up for the evening’s headline event, The Modern Maori Quartet, which is a ticketed performance.

CASH IN ON LOW RATES With interest rates falling to a historic one per cent, investing in property could make more sense than tying your money up in a term deposit with low returns.

Y

ou will no doubt have heard about the Reserve Bank of Australia’s decision to cut interest rates to a historic low one per cent.

The latest cut of 0.25 per cent is an attempt to boost jobs growth, wages and inflation.

The RBA cut the official cash rate from 1.50 per cent to 1.25 per cent at its June meeting, and despite expectations it would wait until early August to cut again, it moved sooner, with another 25 basis points cut at its meeting on Tuesday taking the cash rate to one per cent.

The last time the RBA cut the rate in consecutive months was in 2008, when it cut at five consecutive meetings from 7.25 per cent in August 2008, to 3.25 per cent in February of 2009.

A borrower with a mortgage of $500,000 could expect to see about $74 shaved off their monthly repayments, or almost $27,000 across the life of a 30-year loan – assuming lenders pass on the full 0.25-point cut.

While this is great news for people who already have a mortgage, it is not the best for those who have relied off cash investments such as term deposits, with returns now dropping to around 1.9 per cent.

According to a Canstar analysis, the best return you would get on a one-year term investment in one of the big four banks is with Westpac, who as of

July 1 was offering 1.95 per cent.

With a deposit of $50,000 locked away for 12 months, you would earn $975.

However, if you use that $50,000 to invest in property on the Sunshine Coast, you will be entering the property market at an opportune time.

According to the Real Estate Institute of Queensland’s (REIQ) latest Queensland Market Monitor report, which was released in June, the average investment home on the Sunshine Coast returns four per cent and an investment unit yields 4.8 per cent.

The QMM report shows a three-bedroom investment home in the 4557 postcode, which includes Mooloolaba, Bundilla, Kawana Island and Mountain Creek will net the owner median rent payments of $490 per week, or $25,480 a year.

“The REIQ is predicting rental returns will remain strong, making property a more attractive prospect” over the past five years, with the 4557 postcode enjoying an average increase of $80 a week since the March 2014 quarter and demographers are projecting that the population will continue to surge at an annual rate of 2.5 per cent to half a million by 2040.

As a result of this regional growth, the Sunshine Coast has seen a strong pipeline of significant infrastructure projects in the region including the Sunshine Coast Health Precinct, an expansion to the Sunshine Coast Airport, an international submarine cable and upgrades to the Bruce Highway.

With this level of future demand and current rental vacancy rates sitting at around 1.5 per cent in the tighter areas of the Coast, the REIQ is predicting rental returns will remain strong, making property a more attractive prospect than ever before to having cash locked away in a term deposit.

Brisbane property development company has earmarked the new Maroochydore city centre for a mixed-use project set to change the commercial real estate landscape of the Sunshine Coast.

The $83-million commercial and residential project by Habitat Development Group includes six Small Office-Home Office (SOHO) townhouses, to be built on part of a 4158 sqm parcel of land in the new CBD. Habitat Development Group managing director Cleighton Clark says the three-storey SOHOs will introduce a new form of commercial-residential space never seen before on the Sunshine Coast.

“Each of these SOHOs will have nonresidential space downstairs, with street frontage, that can be used for an office, shop, food and drink outlet or other kind of business,” Mr Clark says.

“There will be a mezzanine level that could be used for operational parts of a business – the staff kitchenette, photocopiers or private offices.

“Upstairs will be residential. They are designed to have the efficiency of an office with the comfort of a home.”

Mr Clark says interest in the SOHOs had been “quite incredible”.

“We have received numerous inquiries from potential tenants about the town homes,” he says.

Habitat Development Group’s project will also be the first residential development in

“Habitat Development Group recognised early on the Maroochydore City Centre will be a place that people will want to live and work,” he says.

“I expect demand from owneroccupiers and investors to be strong, not just for the SOHOs but the residential and retail space as well.”
