am Kerr’s star is on the rise and it’s for all the right reasons. As the captain of our national women’s soccer team, the Matildas, Sam is currently carving it up on the field as part of the FIFA Women’s World Cup campaign.

The young Perth-based woman is athletic, skilled and wholesome – the ideal role model for our younger generation.

Why is it then that female athletes such as Sam are still relatively unknown outside of sporting circles, while certain controversy-plagued male footballers continue to be celebrated by the community?

Then there is the issue of salary. The 2019 Women’s World Cup is fighting for just 7.5 per cent of the 2018 Men’s World Cup allocation.

When and how will the parity come? This is the topic of this week’s cover story, which you can read on page 12.

First job? At school I worked at Kmart, then straight into nursing at the Royal Brisbane Hospital.

What are you currently working on? Marketing our SCARS 100+ Club (cats and dogs who have been in the refuge long term). I would love for them all to find forever homes and find them sponsors while they wait for those homes.

If your life was a book, what would be the title? The Right Choices. I feel like I’ve done many things but always ended up happy with what I am doing.

If you could change one thing on the Sunshine Coast, what would it be? I know we need more roads and infrastructure – I just wish it wasn’t at the expense of so many trees and native wildlife.

What frustrates you the most? Constant negativity. I am always trying to find the positive in life and think of those less fortunate than most of us, which reminds me how great a life we have. We live in a great place.

How do you deal with your frustrations? I try and have a laugh and find the funny side.

If you could tell your 18-year-old self anything, what would it be? Trust that everything happens for a reason and learn from your ‘mistakes’.

Always be kind and life will be good to you and your loved ones. Reach out for help if you need to – your friends are always there.

If you could have dinner with any three people, dead or alive, who would they be? David Attenborough, Audrey Hepburn and Ellen DeGeneres.

Best day in your life and why? May 25 this year when I married the love of my life.

If you won $1 million, how would you spend it?

I’d probably want to rebuild some of the dog shelters at SCARS! Its 40 years old and needs a revamp.

Oh and some nice holidays with great friends, food and champagne.

Nine turtles bundled in a parcel and 19 lizards stashed in airport luggage are among the live animals seized in Australia as part of a global operation targeting the illegal trade.

The Australian arm of the three-week, 14-nation Operation Blizzard resulted in the seizure of 69 reptiles. FAIR PLAY Determined sportswomen across the nation are driving a change in community and business attitudes towards female sports. But there is still a long race to run to achieve any kind of parity with their male counterparts.

A

s the FIFA Women’s World Cup reaches fever pitch in France, Matildas’ skipper Sam Kerr is boldly embracing her role as the poster girl for women’s sport in Australia.

Ms Kerr’s celebratory back flip is fast becoming the stuff of legend and her face is all over Nike Australia branding campaigns as the Matildas receive more media coverage than ever before.

Even though Ms Kerr has established herself as one of the best strikers in the world, she acknowledges there is still a long way to go before parity is reached on any level for women in sport.

On the surface, advancement of elite female sport in Australia has accelerated since the milestone year of 2017. This was the year Ms Kerr was listed as the number one sports performer on the Fox50, the AFLW debuted, and the Jillaroos continued their dominant run, winning the Australian-hosted Women’s Rugby League World Cup. The following year, Australia’s female cricketers triumphed on the international scene while the men languished with ‘sandpapergate’ and rugby league launched NRLW with a short but powerful season, satiating a growing call for greater opportunities for women in the code.

Speaking to My Weekly Preview while training in the Netherlands for the Cup, Ms Kerr says support has grown exponentially for women’s soccer since she first laced up her boots to wear the green and gold.

“Australia has got behind us and there has been a lot more publicity around the team and I think that’s well earned. The girls have

had a huge part to play in that. The standards of the W-League have certainly lifted and the interest in the team from the last World Cup to now is day and night,” she says.

“With the good comes the bad. We’ve had a positive response from the country and everybody is behind us and loves the way we play. Obviously with that comes the pressure to have to perform. The year that everyone got behind us, we had so many good results and now that is what everyone expects of us.

“We love that, we love that we have high expectations, but it has been new for us to have that pressure to win and not disappoint everyone.”

Growing up in an “AFL family,” Ms Kerr played in predominantly male teams and says while she always felt welcome, it was

its history to score four times in one game, en route to claiming the competition’s 2017 Golden Boot and MVP Award.

Ms Kerr also led from the front as Glory reached the 2016-17 W-League Grand Final, scoring 10 goals and earning the Julie Dolan Medal and Penny Tanner Media MVP Award for her efforts.

While she humbly acknowledges these accolades, she says there is still much to be done to achieve equality, from broadcast and media coverage to pay. In the 2016/17 season, Socceroos star Tim Cahill netted a cool $3.5 million to play for Melbourne City while the following year, the W-League had a total salary cap of $2.2 million to split across nine clubs and 181 players.

the lack of future opportunity which led her to soccer at the age of 12.

Much has changed on the field since then, with Ms Kerr becoming arguably the best player in Australia. She splits her time between the Perth Glory, the Matildas and her US club side Sky Blue FC, where she became the National Women’s Soccer League’s record all-time goal scorer and the first player in

Australia. The ABC reported teams at the 2019 Women’s World Cup will be fighting for just 7.5 per cent of the purse handed out at the 2018 Men’s World Cup in Russia.

The disparity means even if the Matildas win the tournament this year, the team will win $5.74 million, half of the $11.47 million the Socceroos earned last year when they were knocked out at the group stage level.

With the Women’s World Cup final selling out in just half an hour, Professional Footballers Australia has asked for an immediate doubling of total prize money from $43 million to $82 million. When you look at the $575 million prize pool given to men’s teams in Russia just last year, it doesn’t seem like a huge ask.

This is a pay gorge, not a gap, and this is even more apparent in the AFLW and NRLW, with female players still working full-time jobs to supplement the small amount they receive for their efforts on the field. Ms Kerr says the issue is something all female athletes are fighting to progress.

“You can’t just go from zero to 100 [on equality]. I think all us girls playing in the W-League are really proud that it’s our 11th season going in and we take steps every year and increase things like pay, length of the season and the amount of players on teams.

It’s these details that end up making the league so much better in the long run.

“I truly believe that it’s a process and it’s not going to happen overnight. The W-League is doing a good job of leading the way. [Parity in sport]has got a long way to go, but we are enjoying the ride and enjoying proving people wrong.”

Organisations like Women Sport Australia (WSA) have been working tirelessly for years to improve pay, career progression, training facilities, media time and leadership and mentoring opportunities for women in sport.

“Women only make up 3.9 per cent of CEOs in sport and there are only 13.4 per cent of women chairs in sport,” WSA president Carol Fox says. “Media coverage is still sitting myweeklypreview.com.au

A large percentage of girls leave sports at the age of 12, but Ms Fox says the growing number of codes offering elite pathways provides role models that will encourage women to stay in sport.

“The old story that no one wants to watch female sports has been blown out of the water and while there are elite pathways there now, we need more parents and committees to be proactive at a grassroots level and make a stand so that things will change,” she says.

“There are still girls at local clubs getting dressed in their car because there are no change rooms for them. If you go down to a field with girls and boys teams training, you will find that the boys are training close to the facilities, while the girls are the furthest away.”

ALANA BOYD Olympic pole vaulter Alana Boyd always had a strong female role model – her mother Denise Robertson was a two-time Olympic 200-metre finalist. This set the tone for all three Boyd children to go on to make their mark in their respective sports.

Ms Boyd took out gold at the 2010 and 2014 Commonwealth Games, placed fourth at the 2016 Olympics and her personal best of 4.81 metres set in July 2016 is the standing Australian record.

She recalls being in year one when she first said she wanted to “go to the Olympics

like Mum”. As Ms Boyd progressed in her skill level, she found herself training with younger men as there were fewer female competitors to be matched against. She says she never felt out of place or ostracised and was accepted without question.

She did, however, have to hold down a part-time job throughout her career to supplement her income. At one time, she had secured sponsorship from Nike, but an injury that led to surgery and a year of downtime quickly saw that evaporate.

“What I was earning wasn’t what male sports people are on. Football players can definitely set themselves up through their salaries, but I was in a position where I had to work as well as compete,” she says.

Ms Boyd, now 35, says she is heartened by the progress of women’s sport and women’s health as a result.

“We are certainly still inundated with sportsmen in society, but having the Sunshine Coast Lightning in our backyard has taken us from being a little regional area to seeing lots of other codes opening up opportunities for boys and girls to get involved in any sport that they want to.”

Ms Pearce, who has a 12-year-old daughter, says responsibility for change reaches down as far as the grassroots clubs, and she is pleased to see more soccer and rugby sevens girls teams on the Coast.

“Once a girl turns 13, there is a national discrimination law that says if they are playing rugby or soccer, we don’t have to put them in the team anymore. I know of two very skilled girls, one who is 13 and one who is 14, who have had to change clubs and leave their school teams to find a club team that’s prepared to take them,” she says.

“Why don’t we change the rules? Society makes the rules up, so we could make a girls team with different ages within it so that they can keep playing.”

We can all do something to improve conditions and the future of women in sport, and for Ms Pearce, it comes down to three simple things: “Pay, play and watch.”

TAHLIA RANDALL The almost seamless progression of Tahlia Randall’s AFL career is proof of how far the code has come in recent years. Ms Randall plays for North Melbourne in the AFLW and was among the pioneering women of the inaugural AFLW code as a player for the Brisbane Lions.

The Buderim-born 21-year-old found AFL at the age of eight, when she was asked to join her older brother’s club, the Chancellor Park Eagles. She excelled in the sport and was devastated when she was told she would not be able to progress beyond under 12s with the club due to safety issues.

“It's always hard to be told that you can’t do something, let alone a sport that you are really involved in, but the club let me repeat another year even though I was older than the boys and that really helped me because I wasn’t cut off,” she says.

Her progression has been smooth sailing since then, moving into the Mountain Creek State High School AFL program and joining the Coast youth girls competition as soon as it was created.“Opportunities for girls to play AFL on the Coast continue to grow. There were just four or five teams when I was up there and now there are eight.

“AFLW is only in its third year, so it’s still a rather new sport; in terms of equality in training facilities, financially and how they help us off the field, it continues to grow. In my first year at the Lions, we were training on a community football ground and the following year, we had access to the Gabba.”

HUGE TURNOUT FOR SAMUEL JOHNSON’S VISIT

Hundreds of people flocked to several events on the Coast last week to catch up with the inspirational Samuel Johnson as he travels around Australia as part of his mission to raise $10 million for cancer research though Love Your Sister, the charity he co-founded with his sister Connie before she passed away following a battle with an aggressive form of breast cancer. Mr Johnson hosted a pop-up market at Caloundra’s Bank of Queensland last Monday and then ventured to IGA Marketplace on Wises Road. Mr Johnson called out for people to “find me and get a hug” and people turned out in droves to meet the Gold Logie winner and most recent Dancing with the Stars champion. Mr Johnson continued north with his pop-up market and is determined to stay on the road until the charity reaches its $10-million milestone.

Set to become a vibrant haven for events, meetings, cultural activities and learning, the new Baringa Community Centre has celebrated its grand opening. Mayor Mark Jamieson says the new heart of Baringa – the community centre – has been designed and funded by the council in partnership with Stockland to provide a central meeting place. The centre is the final stage of the Baringa Community Hub Pilot Project, which was created to promote the shared use of state and local government assets and resources. The centre is perfectly positioned adjacent to the town square, youth plaza and park and conservation areas.

Sunshine Coast historians John and Janice Groves have released their latest book, Caloundra Pictorial Changes. Their latest offering is a collection of photographs of iconic sites from the 1800s and 1900s that are paired with photos from 2018 of the same sites, in a real ‘then and now’ comparison that is a true reflection of the amount of progress seen in the once sleepy fishing town. The book also features a selection of stories and memories that complement the images.

uderim-born Ashlee Unie will step onto the court at the helm of the USC Thunder on June 23 as the new club debuts in Queensland Netball’s 2019 Sapphire Series.

Based at the University of the Sunshine Coast’s high-performance sports precinct, USC Thunder is creating a valuable step in the pathway between grassroots netballers and Sunshine Coast Lightning, the two-

time Suncorp Super Netball champions.

For Ms Unie, who developed a passion for netball as a member of the Buderim Firebirds, being named the captain of the team is a real honour and the title is even more special as Ms Unie was the club’s first signing.

“Playing for USC Thunder means that I can pursue my netball dreams in the birthplace of my netball journey,” she says.

“All my junior netball was completed on the Sunshine Coast, from learning to catch and pass at the old courts in Elizabeth Daniels Park and honing my skills each week at Fisherman’s Road, to more recently training as a part of the Lightning squad at USC. “Growing up as a part Sunshine Coast landscape has shaped me as a player and also as a person and I am indebted to those who have helped me along the way. I am thrilled to be able to represent the Sunshine Coast netball community as a part of the USC Thunder in 2019.”

Josephine Hungerford has been named as vice captain and the Thunder includes high-level athletes such as 19-year-old Jesse Wardlaw, who plays AFLW with the Brisbane Lions, and Abigail Latu-Meafou, who has already been called up to the Queensland Firebirds in the Suncorp Super Netball league to fill in for an injury.

Led by Garry Pashen, the only male

coach in the league, USC Thunder will debut in the semi-professional Sapphire Series on June 23, competing against six clubs from across Queensland. Matches will be played at the expanded USC Stadium in Sippy Downs and the new Queensland State Netball Centre in Brisbane.

Mr Pashen enjoyed a stellar on-court career which included playing for the Sonix Australian Men’s Netball team, representing Australia in 2001, 2010 and 2011 before moving into coaching positions, including spearheading the SunCoast Lynx when it was created in 2001.

“We wanted to make sure young women can stay on the Coast as long as they want” “Coming back to the Coast with another inaugural team is a nice little bookend for me,” he says.

Stepping into the role in October last year, Mr Pashen says there was no shortage of players interested in creating history with the Thunder.

“Even though we only have unofficial links to the Lightning, training at the same facility and having access to the same equipment and the opportunity to develop good relationships with their coaching staff and some of the players as well means the girls are not only just being around an team, but they will be training in a professional manner,” Mr Pashen says.

With the USC launching a Netball Academy this year, the development pathways to the Suncorp Super Netball are clearer than ever before. In fact, four Thunder players are already training partners for Suncorp Super Netball teams.

Mr Pashen says the team is already playing “like they’ve been together for seasons”.

“Training is very much heating up at the moment and we are looking forward to getting going. It’s going to be a massively tough competition, but with us being a new club, we’ve got nothing to lose and we’re certainly going to throw everything out there,” he says.

“I know we will compete well and our focus is going to be on the performance. If

we can do that well, the scoreboard will take care of itself.”

Sunshine Coast Lightning secretary Simone Pearce says a core group of passionate advocates have worked for several years to prepare a bid for a Sunshine Coast-based state competition team.

When the Sapphire Series was restructured and relaunched for 2019, they were in a strong position to launch the successful license bid.

“We wanted to make sure young women can stay on the Coast as long as they want to and be able to take their competitive sport to a higher level,” he says. “It’s actually a little bit surreal that they will be on the court in a few weeks.

“Even 12 months ago if you’d said this was going to happen, I wouldn’t have believed you.

“There has been a lot of hard work from a lot of different people and now we are hoping that the community gets behind the Thunder as passionately as they did with the Lightning.

“These girls have worked so hard and deserve to be celebrated and for us to be in awe of how good they are.”

BIG PINEAPPLE PROJECT TO CREATE DOZENS OF JOBS Moves are underway to return the Big Pineapple to its glory days, with $6.8 million in federal funding giving the renewal project a major boost.

ig moves are happening at the Big Pineapple with the State Government chipping in millions of dollars to accelerate plans for a redevelopment of the tourist icon.

The 169-hectare site is currently a mix of tourism and rural zones and Big Pineapple Renewal’s project director Jim Costello released a whole-of-site plan late last year, the result of three years’ worth of planning and consultation.

Mr Costello says the plan will ensure a

sustainable future by leveraging the Big Pineapple’s strong brand and history to focus on a combination of eco-tourism, agribusiness and supporting local producers, as well as providing entertainment opportunities, outdoor educational facilities and accommodation.

Tourism Industry Development Minister Kate Jones has announced $6.8 million will be invested in the precinct to refurbish the internal structure of the Big Pineapple and reception area as well as repurposing the old

“As a result of the upgrade, we’ll attract an extra 160,000 annual visitors and pump another $4.5 million a year into the local economy,” she says.

Mr Costello says the funding adds to the momentum of the renewal program.

“These works are just a part of our

extensive master plan to ensure the iconic Big Pineapple returns to the glory days as a must-visit tourist attraction,” he says.

“Our vision is gradually coming together, with visitors again able to climb the Big Pineapple from next year, enjoy time in our zoo and TreeTop Challenge, and tackling a parfait and other foods and beverages afterwards inside the Sunshine Planation Building.”

Visit Sunshine Coast CEO Simon Latchford says while the Sunshine Coast has some of Australia’s most appealing natural attractions, “a new era of tourism products is vital if we are to fulfil the region’s tourism potential, grow the economy and provide a significant flow of new jobs for the area’s growing population”.

Man on a mission

Mark Forbes is determined to help treat those suffering from eating disorders, and he’s got the Sunshine Coast community behind him. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw.

M

ark Forbes is a driven man.

For the past four years he has channelled that determined spirit into a cause close to his heart – the establishment of Australia’s first residential facility to treat eating disorders.

And now, a long-held dream is on the verge of becoming a reality.

Mr Forbes’ charity EndED has not only secured the funding to buy a property and build a facility, but his initiative has prompted the Federal Government to commit to $70 million to building more residential facilities for sufferers of eating disorders.

“Once I set a goal, I don’t stop to think, are we going to get there,” Mr Forbes says. “I just set it and know we will get there. But I didn’t realise we’d get to where this is heading now.

It’s absolutely wonderful.”

In April, Federal Minister for Health Greg Hunt announced his government would provide $70.2 million to establish six residential eating disorders centres, with $4.5 million of that going towards a collaboration between EndED and the Butterfly Foundation to run the first facility on a 25-acre Mooloolah Valley property for the next four years.

It’s a far cry from the days when Mr Forbes and his wife Gayle, the parents of two daughters who suffered with eating disorders, put their house in Buddina on the market in order to fund the residential facility.

“The United States has had residential eating disorder facilities for 25 years, but we have none in Australia,” Mr Forbes says.

“Through our own journey, we understood the need to achieve that. We looked at about 12 properties and when we drove halfway down the driveway to this one in Mooloolah Valley, we said ‘this is it’, but we didn’t have the money to buy it. We managed to get a six-month settlement on the property so we could source the funding and we put our own house on the market.”

Fortuitously, Mr Forbes met Sunshine Coast philanthropists Roy and Nola Thompson at a function and discovered they had their own family connection to eating disorders and understood EndED’s mission.

“Roy said, ‘do you have a business card?’

I handed him my card and then he turned to his wife Nola and said, ‘we just bought this business card for a million dollars’. I gave Nola a kiss and Roy said, ‘don’t you go kissing me’.

“I went to see him on the Monday and he had a cheque written out to EndED for one million dollars,” Mr Forbes adds. “He

didn’t want to see a land contract or anything.”

With the money secured for the land, the Forbes no longer needed to sell their home, but decided to sell anyway and move out to a house on the Mooloolah Valley property, where they’ve established vegetable gardens and brought in chooks, sheep and pigs. From there, they both work as full-time volunteers for EndED and employ two lived-experience eating disorder recovery coaches, Millie Thomas and Laura Chamberlain.

Mr and Mrs Forbes have dedicated their lives to this cause but they have also been supported by a host of businesses that have offered their time and services free to build the facility. The Sunshine Coast Council also granted $60,000 to buy a 12-seater bus, which is used to transport eating disorders sufferers from around the Sunshine Coast to the facility.

“We’ve had a lot of people volunteer their services,” Mr Forbes says. “Pottery teachers, art teachers, sewing teachers, yoga teachers – they come here on a Monday and Friday and provide those services to the girls.

“We bring them out of their isolation and connect them with social activities, connect them with the land, help them learn new skills and just be part of a community again. They’re actually getting a lot of rehabilitation without even being aware of it.”

EndED has partnered with the Butterfly Foundation and the facility will be called EndED Butterfly House. Construction will start in a couple of weeks.

“What we’ve achieved has surpassed everything I could possibly imagine,” says Mr Forbes. “This is where the Sunshine Coast is such a wonderful region – to come together as a community to help deliver this project.

There’s no stopping us.”

t took a dedicated team of 200 volunteers more than three years of toiling across five op shops and now supporters of Sunshine Hospice are celebrating the purchase of land for a future community hospice.

A six-bedroom palliative-care facility is a huge step closer after Sunshine Hospice acquired the 6100-square metre property in Illuka Street in Buderim. An application for a material change of use is with the Sunshine Coast Council and, if approved, construction can begin on the facility, which will offer end-of-life care, respite care and counselling for families.

For Bev Barton, who has been an active participant in fundraising for a community hospice since 2006, the milestone is a huge step forward. It follows the disappointment of seeing the former Katie Rose Cottage at Doonan close three years ago due to lack of funding and the landlord wishing to sell the property.

“We have learned a lot from operating Katie Rose for five years and we have changed our model of care,” she says. “The Buderim hospice will be licenced as a private hospital and although it won’t look like a hospital, it will be fully accredited and by achieving this model, we should be able

to tap into ongoing funding from government, Department of Veterans’ Affairs and private health funds – revenue streams previously excluded during our five years at Doonan.

“We also own this property, so we have certainty for the future.

“We are very much going to cater for the whole family with lovely lounge rooms where families can be together. We will incorporate a family room so that we can invite sick children from rural Queensland to have a holiday on the Coast and we can support them and their families with care from registered nurses while they make some precious memories here.”

Ms Barton says the idyllic setting will provide patients and their loved ones with a beautiful setting surrounded by native bushland where they can be at one with nature. Board members and volunteers have been making themselves available to neighbours in order to share information about their desired outcome for the site.

Sunshine Hospice Board chairman Frank Lewins says the land was purchased from Unitywater and the vision is to provide high-quality, residential palliative care.

Dr Lewins says it is important to counter misconceptions about hospices.

“A hospice is not a hospital, but rather a peaceful home away from home,” he says.

“Sunshine Hospice will be a quiet place: architecturally designed and surrounded by natural bushland and landscaped areas, providing a tranquil environment for patients.

“The hospice will care for a person’s physical, spiritual and psychological wellbeing, as well as supporting loved ones.

“Hospice care will be delivered free of charge to the patient,” he adds “In a similar way to other hospices in Queensland, we will be sustained by a range of funding sources including our own community fundraising, private health funds, Department of Veterans’ Affairs and government.”

The Sunshine Hospice Board will now start a wide-ranging fundraising campaign to raise the $5 million or so needed for the construction and fitout of the building.

T

he Australian and global stock markets have made solid strides in 2019 so far, but a road map for the way ahead shows some obstacles. In the global backdrop, markets are focused on the latest manoeuvres in the protracted trade war between the US and China.

At the time of writing, tariffs on $US200 billion of Chinese goods imported into the US have been raised to 25 from 10 per cent.

China reacted swiftly, imposing higher tariffs on imports of US products. The latest move comes as recent talks in Washington ended in a stalemate. Heightening the situation, US negotiators told their opposite numbers that China had four weeks to agree to a deal. If no deal is reached, additional tariffs of 25 per cent would be imposed on a further $US325 billion of goods imported from China. This raises the prospect of all of China’s goods

exports to the US – valued at circa $US540 billion in 2018 – being hit with new imposts.

These tensions also threaten to reverberate to other markets.

Previously we noted the US raising tariffs, along with retaliatory responses from China, could reduce the S&P 500 Index’s earnings per share by $US8 to 10. A reduction in market EPS of that size, assuming no derating in the current price-earnings (PE) multiple, would equate to a fall of around five per cent. A reduction in earnings, and a one-point derating in the PE multiple, would take another five to six per cent off the value of the S&P 500 Index.

For China, our global research partners estimate that without a trade deal, corporate earnings growth in 2019 could ease to around 10 per cent from 15 per cent. Assuming no derating in the MSCI China Index’s PE multiple, this would equate to a circa four per cent fall in the index, while one-PE-point derating would take the index down a further eight per cent. The immediate market reaction to the latest developments was muted but we remain neutral on equities generally given the delicate situation.

Sami Muirhead has kept hidden stashes of money from her husband in the past, but now there are no secrets between them – except one.

Richard O’Leary experiences the best and worst dad moments ever when called upon to produce a costume for a school performance.

lmost a third of us hide financial secrets from our partners. The main thing we lie about is having a secret money stash, according to a Canstar survey.

I must admit I cheated on my husband for years and years. I did not confess all my sins when it came to money. I had multiple secret cash piles and would sometimes even get out an extra $50 from the Coles checkout so as to hide my ‘bonuses’. And I still miss those Medicare cash rebate days. Remember those simpler time, girls? Collecting Medicare reimbursements was like backing a winner in a horse race when that bit of extra money came into your life. I do not really know what I did with these extra cash injections, but it felt good having them!

These days I have given up hiding my little stashes. My hubby knows I am a bit like a squirrel – I like to sock away little bits each week in order to build up a big supply to get me through winter, or in my case, to get me to the ball in fabulous shoes.

I am that person who spends whatever they earn. I know for sure that I would spend every last cent no matter what I earned. So I have to be really strict on myself and I currently have a travel account where my friend and I direct deposit $15 every week into an account of hopes and dreams that we pray will one day take our children to Paris. Our children may be 33 when this eventuates.

I have another little box where I stuff $10

into each week with the aim of buying a really lovely handbag. I know. Money does not buy happiness but a great handbag or pair of shoes can help shake away the bluest of moods.

The problem with my cash box is that whenever I need tuckshop money or cash for something else, I raid the box. So in three years I have managed to save the grand total of $400. But onwards I march.

So what do you save up for? I also usually have a lay-by going to chip away at bigger

And while we are clearing the air, I probably should tell my husband I haven’t been on our joint diet for weeks. I am guilty of cheating on that front too. I have been eating cheese late at night straight from the fridge door. And there are brand-new cushions for the couch hidden in the boot of my car. End of confessions.

ow we just need the gladiator clothes,” my eldest son said.

It was the afternoon of the day before he would appear in a play about Ancient Rome at his school.

He and a classmate were going to tell the audience all about gladiators before a final epic battle between the two of them.

My 10-year-old had drawn the short straw to die in the fight – after his comment about needing fancy dress as well, I felt he may have lucked out in the father lottery as well.

To be fair, I had already helped him make a sword and shield – buying the wood before working with my son to cut, paint and put the pieces together.

The result was better than expected, for me anyway – a silver looking sword which may have been a bit blocky and a full-size shield, rendered in Roman red.

“I really like doing this Dad – making stuff together,” my son said at one stage.

Best dad moment ever. Then he got home from the last rehearsal before the play.

“How did you go?”

“Alright.”

“How did the sword and shield go?”

“Good. Although my friend made his with a jigsaw. It looked real. In comparison mine looked like two blocks of wood stuck together.”

That’s when he told me about needing a gladiator outfit as well.

I searched online. I searched op shops.

I’d left it too late. I’d failed.

The next morning my son improvised, turning a red T-shirt inside out and making do with some shorts instead of the ancient Roman leather skirt.

To top it off he needed a helmet.

It came to me in a flash. He had a bike helmet which already had a large crest like a prehistoric Mohawk running from the front to back, all I had to do was cover the rest of it in aluminium foil.

I handed it over to my son, fearing the worst.

“Cool,” he said.

I dropped him to school more nervous than he was, and picked him up in the afternoon.

“How did it go?”

“Really good, remembered all my lines – got a couple of laughs, when my helmet fell off. Twice.”

I was still pondering this when I dropped him at school the next day. In a plastic bag next to his hook was another handmade gladiator helmet.

“What’s that?”

“It’s my friend’s helmet. He didn’t want to wear it after he saw how good mine was.”

A NEW HUB OF SPORTING EXCELLENCE The new $27-million Sports Hub at Kawana is another game-changer for the Sunshine Coast and is already attracting nationwide interest.

“Everyone who has toured the facility over the past month has been really impressed with the concept and I’m confident that when we open in July, the Hub will be considered as one of the best training camp destinations in the country.”

Stage one of The Sports Hub comprises a High Performance Sports and Medical Centre, which offers services like strength and conditioning training, rehabilitation, recovery facilities, sports education, sports science and sports medical services.

The Knee Joint and Advanced Pain and Wellness have now begun trading, with the other tenants opening their doors in the coming weeks. This part of the Hub is currently 90 per cent leased, with some great leasing opportunities still available.

Stage two will be a not-for-profit Sports Club, which is another first for the Coast.

Comprising a bistro, sports bar and multiple function spaces, this will be a great venue for locals to relax overlooking the lake and for sporting teams to host awards nights and fundraising events.

Stage three is affordable short-term accommodation, which provides serviced, ensuited rooms designed for athletes and groups who want to use the facilities and services offered at the The Sports Hub, while

staying in comfortable, conveniently located accommodation. There are 78 rooms all up and Mr Cook is already taking bookings from school groups, sports camps and event accommodation.

“The accommodation has been really well received by team coaches and managers, as well as athletes visiting the area. It’s a great location and great price point. We’re hitting the ground running in July with multiple sports camp bookings and I have been really surprised by the different types of enquiries

“We’ve really targeted it at that camp and conference market” we have had – everything from professional teams, school teams, student tours, leadership camps through to fitness summits and wellness retreats.

“For professional teams like the Queensland Reds and the Gold Coast Titans, the big challenge is transport. Generally when they’re staying at a camp they’re having to get transport multiple times daily to the sports precinct at Kawana to utilise the facilities. This

takes an hour out of their day. That’s huge.

Here, they don’t require transport and they get an extra five or six hours of training time over a week.”

The accommodation also includes multiple dining and function rooms with bars, a conference room, commercial kitchen, laundry facilities and a state-of-the-art security monitoring system to ensure the safety of all guests. Local catering company Deliciously Clean Eats will be operating out of the Hub and will providing fresh, healthy meals to accommodation guests.

Mr Cook says the High Performance Centre is unique to Queensland and is a similar concept to the Australian Institute of Sport.

“We have everything an athlete would need here on site – allied health, professors, doctors, people who are top of their fields and currently working with state, national and international athletes. A big part of Shane and Clayton’s vision was to create a world-class facility where our local professional athletes can complete their training, meaning they do not have to relocate to capital cities where facilities of this level are located.

“A lot of our local professional athletes have to move away from friends and family because the facilities here on the Coast weren’t at that level, but now they have everything they need at the Hub. That provides a huge advantage for our local athletes.”

r Peter Fowler and his wife Amanda are relatively new to the Sunshine Coast and bring a wealth of expertise in sports science with them. This husband and wife team settled on the Coast a year ago and have joined the cutting-edge Kawana Sports Hub with their clinic, The Recovery Room.

“More recently I worked as a research scientist at Aspetar Sports Medicine Hospital in Qatar, where my research focused on developing practical interventions for athletes to enhance recovery,” he says. “While at Aspetar, I was also a consultant to a range of elite athletes, clubs and organisatons from the English Premier League, Rugby Sevens World Series, Rugby League, NFL, cycling and motor racing, together with the Qatar Olympic Team and Football Association.”

“Having worked for 11 years in highperformance sport in the UK, Australia and Qatar, I am excited to bring my knowledge and expertise to the Sunshine Coast to help local athletes to perform on the national and world stage,” he says. “I am also excited to share technology, equipment and support at levels usually reserved for elite athletes with the general public to help them achieve their performance goals.”

“A centre like The Recovery Room would have been an invaluable resource to help me recover between training and competition,

and reduce the injuries I sustained,” she says.

“Unfortunately, my dancing career ended at 25 when I injured both hip flexors and my priorities shifted to recovery.”

ith the federal election out of the way and no change of government or a shake-up of property policies, The Auction Group auctioneer Gordon Macdonald is expecting a return to normality on the Sunshine Coast.

Being at the coalface of auctions across the region means Mr Macdonald has his finger on the industry’s pulse and he says the region has enjoyed an “incredibly good run” in the last couple of years in terms of the number of property sales, the prices being achieved and the continued demand that has isolated the Coast from the giant peaks and troughs experienced in the southern markets of Sydney and Melbourne in the past 18 months.

“What we will see [post-election] is a return to a smart, sustainable growth in a region that has a very positive 30-year outlook,” he says.

“People coming to auctions at the moment are curious. They are coming along and using auctions as a bit of a barometer for how the market is faring post-election and when there’s more people at auctions, people seem more confident and when people are more confident, there is more energy and when there’s more energy, people are seemingly happy to spend.”

Contrary to the unpredictability of the

southern markets, which the majority of media coverage focuses on, Mr Macdonald says the Coast is a “very different game”.

“In a good market, our auction clearance rate sits at around 50 per cent and in a challenging market, it sits around 45 per cent,” he says.

“There are a number of factors with auction clearance rates and one of the biggest influences is the sellers’ willingness to meet the market.

“People coming to auctions at the moment are curious” “Because our market is stable, and has been for such a long time, it doesn’t fluctuate, and seller’s expectations aren’t exceeded by the market.”

Mr Macdonald says auctions continue to remain a popular mode of sale because it puts a cap on the number of days a property spends on the market.

“You’ve got to get into the psychology of the buyer. When you walk into an open home for inspection, one of the first questions they

ask is how long has this been on the market?

The reason they want to know is because if it’s been on the market for three months, they’ll be thinking to themselves, ‘what’s wrong with it?’

“Their next thought is that if no one else wants it, they will make an offer 30 per cent less than what the seller is asking because they believe the asking price is too high.”

Mr Macdonald says if you flip this and the property has been on the market for six days in a 21-day auction and the agent tells you a print advertising campaign is going live the following day, the buyer then has a sense of urgency to act.

“That’s what auctions do, they help us to help the buyer make a faster decision, either a yes or a no, and auctions by their very nature attract an offer that isn’t subject to finance, which is great for the vendors,” he says.

“It creates an ecosystem of effort and energy and a succinct time spent on the market, so you don’t get the low-ball offers.

“With an auction campaign, the print advertising component creates engagement with the neighbours and the community and you find other media want to know about upcoming auctions and auction results because this is the pointy end of the industry, it is the arrowhead that drives the market forward.”

Well folks, there’s not a lot of surf to write about at the moment. Although we’ve had some great waves for the pros at Bells and again at Margaret River, this past week has been pretty flat across the Coast. This is a great opportunity to catch up on those ding repairs and gear maintenance in preparation for the next swell. Or to book a snowboard trip down south as it’s been puking snow at Falls Creek and Perisher. The good news is it never stays flat forever.
