mmanuel Lutheran College art teacher Peter Evans says that all children are artists, until they reach an age where they decide they’re either not good at it or don’t enjoy it.

As he says, kids at an early age will give anything a go. It’s true. As a child there was something magical about putting pen or paint to paper, cutting, gluing, glittering, shaping. Art brought so much joy to my childhood. I had big dreams of becoming a children’s author/illustrator, and at the tender age of eight, I saw my future bright and clear.

That is until a school teacher suggested I steer away from art and focus on my stronger points. What may have been a flippant remark from one educator, felt like a brazen attack. Her words continued to reverberate through my young, impressionable mind and all that passion vanished.

It wasn’t until becoming a mother that I once again enjoyed basic art. Watching the enthusiasm, determination and joy on my son’s face as he creates boats, maps and robots from clay, boxes, egg cartons and paint, is something special.

This has reminded me of the importance of art and celebrating the industry, something the Immanuel Arts Festival does well by raising the profile of professional, emerging and student artists, here on the Coast. In this week’s cover story, Leigh Robshaw talks to the people behind the popular festival. It’s sure to spark your interest.

INSPIRING A NEW GENERATION OF ARTISTS The popular Immanuel Arts Festival is on once again. To celebrate, we speak to teachers, students and artists involved in the festival about the value of art in children’s lives today. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw.

W

ith an ever-increasing reliance on screens among our kids, the value of art in children’s lives is greater than ever before. While art teachers will tell you they don’t feel there’s enough emphasis placed on art in the curriculum, the weekly art classes most students attend are a breath of fresh air.

For kids who don’t do well in other subjects, art is a place they can relax and even excel. For those who feel pressured to get the right answer in maths, it’s comforting to know there’s no right or wrong answer in art.

“The first rule in art is there’s no rules,” says Owen Hutchison, who is the artist in focus at this year’s Immanuel Arts Festival.

“If you want to have a green sky have a green sky. You shouldn’t have boundaries and parameters, unless you’re a commercial artist.”

Before retiring and devoting himself full-time to his art, Mr Hutchison was a high school teacher. He’s a firm believer in the importance of art in children’s lives.

“I think it makes kids observant,” he says.

“I know that’s what it does for me. You look at objects and scenes and think, how would that look in a certain way. You take in data from the environment and you analyse it.”

Classroom art has come a long way since Mr Hutchison’s youth, when art wasn’t always taught in the most engaging way.

“When I was a kid, we had art once a week. We had pastels on grey paper – it wasn’t

really inspiring. The main influence on me came in high school where I learnt lino cut prints. I remember going home and doing a print just for fun.”

Peter Evans, a primary school art teacher at Immanuel Lutheran College, takes students into much more exciting realms than pastels on grey paper. “With the preps,

I look at how artists use lines and shapes to create artworks,” he says. “We looked at Kandinsky last term, we painted to music and did abstract artwork using lines, shapes and

colours. I show them artwork is pretty much just lines, shape and colours put together in different ways.

“At the moment we’re doing a monstershaped collage and for the Arts Fest, we’re doing a collaborative artwork. The preps’ part is doing some leaves. I’ve painted some leaves and they’re going to decorate them and put them on an art tree. Other grades are doing patterned rocks around the bottom of the tree.”

Mr Evans says all children are artists, until they reach an age where they decide they’re either not good at it or don’t enjoy it.

“Kids at an early age will give anything a go,” he says. “As they get older they have more preconceived ideas – if it’s not quite right they get quite frustrated.”

Mr Evans has been teaching art in primary and high school for close to 20 years and believes it’s not only a relaxing pastime for kids, it contributes to the development of a number of important skills.

“Art is about decision making and problem solving,” he says. “There are multiple possibilities; it’s just endless. It encompasses so many skills that are part of 21st century education. It is a form of therapy for a lot of kids and it’s also a form of mindfulness. Those who may struggle with literacy and numeracy, when they come to art it’s their thing and they really get into it. As an art teacher, I’m hoping I’m giving them the skills, strategies, problem solving, creativity skills, following procedure

Mr Evans runs a lunchtime art club once a week, and students can visit during morning tea time to draw or makes things out of plasticine. He also runs school holiday art classes, which is great for kids who want to explore art with more freedom.

unicorns, I get all sorts of weird and wonderful things they like to paint. They just come in and get into their zone.”

Mr Evans says art changes in high school, when it becomes more concept based, while primary school art is purely “creative and fearless”. Mr Evans and Mr Hutchison both agree that many parents don’t see the point in encouraging their children to pursue art, because they see it as a subject with limited career opportunities.

“A lot of people don’t see a future in it, but these days you have design, graphics and website creation – art is a pretty important skill to have with all those fields.”

Year 12 Immanuel Lutheran College student Charlotte Bateman is an avid artist who plans to study psychology next year. But for now, she’s gearing up to enter her first artworks into the Immanuel Arts Prize.

“The body of work we’ve been working on has been based on the concept of existence,” she says. “I really wanted to base my piece around the identity of people’s existence and how experience shapes existence.

“I’ve created three portraits using red, black and blue biro pens, used a technique of scribbling. It’s a really good medium to work with because it allows me to build on the darker parts and it allows for flexibility in the lighter parts. It allows depth to come through.”

Charlotte has loved art since she was a child and remembers going home every day after school and sketching. “I’ve always been passionate about it. I do mostly sketching but that leads into painting. I would consider myself an artist and I think it would be

interesting and a great experience to have a career as an artist, but it’s not very stable. It’s something I’d like to pursue when I’m older, after I have a career in something else.”

Charlotte likes to relax in her room with her smartphone like any other teen, but says art has given her something else to focus on.

“It’s an escape for young people to use their brains in a different way and to think differently. I’d much rather be sitting down drawing a picture and escaping into that world, getting into my mindset and letting my thoughts develop on a page.”

Charlotte says the Arts Festival is a great opportunity for emerging artists like herself to share their work. “There are so many different artists that come through and so many different pieces.

“All the students love it – we all go down and look at it. I just think that art starts from a young age. Children scribble and see they’ve created something and the parents might not understand what they’ve drawn, but the child knows. As you grow, it becomes structured and you see patterns.

“Eventually it becomes something beautiful. Art is very important for human development and is a big part of growing up.”

What is the value of art in children’s lives? I believe art is incredibly valuable in children’s lives. It allows them the opportunity to tap into their natural creativity, without fear of judgment, boundaries or expectations.

Art is an extension of who you are, a form of expressing emotions, and when children are given a safe space in which to play and create, they are also given an opportunity to be their own unique selves, which is a very important and precious thing indeed.

Why do you create art for children? I have never really felt that I created art specifically for children except with my illustrations for my Josh the Robot children’s books. Perhaps it is more about creating art that brings out the inner child in everyone.

My artworks are often abstract colourful explosions of thoughts and stories and sometimes simply a moment of enjoying certain colours and textures. I have previously enjoyed painting a variety of playful colourful pieces capturing happy faces and robots, which while can be seen as aimed at children, I have found that they are enjoyed by all ages.

Naturally children will be drawn to certain works, however, my wish is for every piece I create to hopefully connect emotionally with people, children and adults alike, for my art to bring joy and encourage everyone to get creative and share who they are. If I am able

more thrilled about the feedback I have received and continue to receive about my Josh the Robot children’s books, it is incredibly special to me. Josh is a character I created who understands what it is like to be treated differently and sometimes excluded, simply because he is different to others. I love hearing that parents enjoy reading my books to their children, knowing that they are learning about the importance of being kind, including others and that it is okay to be different. I particularly enjoy when parents share how their children have embraced Josh and have even taken my books to school to share the messages within the pages. One young boy even dressed up as Josh the Robot for Book Week. Nothing brings me greater happiness than knowing that something I have created brings joy to others.

Was art important to you as a child? Any creative means of expression I could find was important to me as I was not able to communicate verbally. I adored my puppets and drawing and would often put on puppet shows for my family with my varied collection of noises for each character. I am so grateful to my family for allowing me the space to express myself so creatively as it was also a means in which for me to communicate with them. While it was not until later in life that I discovered art as a means of therapy to assist with PTSD, it has grown to become a great love and source of happiness for me.

What’s the most important thing children should remember when they are creating art? Art is an extension of who you are. It is an opportunity to share what you have to say, so be true to who you are. Art should not have limits – have fun, play and most of all enjoy.

Both of the former members of parliament for Fairfax and Fisher have been re-elected following the May 18 Federal Election. At the time of print, just under 80 per cent of the votes had been counted. Liberal National Party (LNP) incumbent Ted O’Brien clinched a decisive victory, securing 52 per cent of the vote with first preferences and 64.37 per cent two-candidate preferred over Australian Labor Party’s (ALP) Julie McGlone, who was his closest competitor with 21 per cent of the primary vote and 35.27 per cent two-candidate preferred. In the neighbouring electorate of Fisher, LNP incumbent Andrew Wallace secured 50 per cent of the first preference votes with 75 per cent of the votes counted. He secured a win over ALP’s Daniel Parsell, his closest competitor with 22.67 per cent of the primary vote and just 37 per cent of the two-candidate preferred votes. Mr Wallace secured 62 per cent of the twocandidate preferred votes. More than 20 million ballot papers were counted on election night, delivering an election night result that saw the LNP retain government under Prime Minister Scott Morrison (pictured with his family).

University of the Sunshine Coast student and USC Spartans swimmer Kaylee McKeown set four new records at the 2019 UniSport Nationals swimming championships earlier this month. Ms McKeown set record times in the 50-metre backstroke, 100-metre backstroke, 200-metre backstroke and 200-metre individual medley. Her achievements helped USC finish seventh from the 29 universities that attended. Fellow Spartans swimmers Jake Packard, Tianni Gilmour, Dahlas Rogers and Kai Smeaton also had a great run, with Mr Packard winning both the 100-metre and 200-metre breaststroke events.

The $1.8-billion Sunshine Coast University Hospital has been recognised as Australia’s best public building in 2019, with a national award for innovation and excellence. Developer Lendlease was presented with the Woods Bagot Award for Best Public Building at the 2019 Property Council of Australia/Rider Levett Bucknall Innovation and Excellence Awards in Sydney last week. The hospital is the largest healthcare building to ever receive a six-star Green Star rating for design and construction from the Green Building Council of Australia. A NEW VIEW OF DISABILITY Compass Institute CEO David Dangerfield will join paralympian Karni Liddell for the next In Conversation event. WORDS: Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane.

W

hen Paralympian Karni Liddell was preparing for what was to become a successful games campaign two decades ago, she crossed paths with then Australian Paralympic Committee member David Dangerfield during squad training.

Fast forward and Mr Dangerfield is now the CEO of award-winning Coast charity The Compass Institute, which is dedicated to providing support for people with intellectual and/or physical disabilities, and Ms Liddell has become one of Australia’s most successful, well-respected and highly awarded Paralympic swimmers.

The two will cross paths once again at the Sunshine Coast Council’s next In Conversation event at Venue 114, where they are both guest speakers.

While Ms Liddell, who is one of the few TED speakers to receive a standing ovation, will challenge the audience to let go of excuses in order to pursue success, Mr Dangerfield will speak about the life-changing work being carried out through The Compass Institute.

With the theme Disability Vs Ability, Mr Dangerfield says

the event has come at perfect time with the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) reaching the final stages of its national rollout.

Mr Dangerfield says the NDIS has allowed more families than ever before to access services through the award-winning social enterprise. “Since the scheme started here on the Coast, our service footprint has expanded very considerably and it continues to expand. Previously, in a year we might typically have 25 applications for service and in January alone this year, we had 52,” he says.

“That places significant demand on Compass, which is a niche service, and our whole ethos is to maintain quality.”

Compass had been operating as an accredited post-school disability service that provides further training and meaningful employment for young people since 2003 and three years ago, an opportunity arose for them to branch out into early intervention through the Compass Assistance Dog program.

Mr Dangerfield saw an opportunity to play a role in vital early intervention for young people and their families.

“These specially trained dogs are quite literally a gamechanger for children who have autism in combination with their disability,” he says. “The autistic brain forms a certain way and because of neuroplasticity, they are not locked into forming that way. We can change the trajectory of the life of a young person through a strategically placed assistance dog.”

Mr Dangerfield says early intervention with assistance dogs has a genuine economic benefit to society by reducing that child’s reliance on funding for services later in their life as well as having immeasurable social benefits.

“We have seen children who have quite literally had their lives turned around in a matter of months or even days,” he says.

“We had a six-year-old girl with a significant range of disabilities and she didn’t sleep, so Mum didn’t sleep and their whole family was on edge. She had a dog placed with her and on the first night, she was sound asleep in her bed because she had been walking around with the dog all day and was tired, but she also felt secure with the dog there.

“When I saw a photo of the assistance dog sitting beside the bed with the girl asleep on his paw, which he had placed up on the bed, I just cried because this instantaneously changed her whole life and the impact will not only benefit this little girl, but also her family.”

In the past three years, 14 Compass Assistance Dogs have been placed with children across the region and at a minimum cost of $20,000 each, funding is critical to ensure more children can benefit from the program.

Coast residents can get involved by volunteering to become foster carers for assistance dogs while they undergo training, or joining the Dollar-A-Day program to contribute towards helping another child to get their own assistance dog.

THE COAST’S TOP COP The Police Officer of the Year Awards recognises the contribution of our hardworking men and women in blue. WORDS: Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane.

enior Constable Pierre Senekal has been named the Rotary Sunshine Coast Central Police Officer of the Year.

The honour was bestowed on the Kenilworth officer-in-charge in front of more than 50 guests including Police Commissioner Ian Stewart and Police Minister Mark Ryan at an event hosted by the Rotary Club of Sunshine Coast Central.

Snr Const Senekal was chosen as the winner from a pool of six finalists, who were chosen following a Coast-wide nomination process.

The police officer of 10 years describes the award win as “humbling” and is quick to point out that being a police officer means relying on other officers as much as the community to have a positive effect.

Snr Const Senekal has been posted in Kenilworth for the past three years and previously held positions at Maryborough, Tiaro and Coolum before becoming one of the renowned ‘Segway cops’ patrolling Hastings Street for the Noosa Police Beat.

“I’ve since switched to a role that required four wheels,” he quips.

“The highlight of my week is getting out of the office and walking into town to talk

“Police officers require that connection to the community so we can do the most effective work we can.”

Snr Const Senekal says the awards will continue to provide a positive connection between citizens and police officers.

“It’s a really good thing for us as police to see that the community actually see and appreciate what we do,” he says.

“That sort of acknowledgement is good because unfortunately in our line of work, we do get a lot of complaints. Nobody calls us when they win the lottery. They call us when there’s a problem, and we have to make difficult decisions sometimes that not everyone is happy with. That’s just the nature of the work.

“But whether it is cases like a 1.5-kilogram discovery of drugs that saw a defendant found guilty and taken off the streets, to arresting and charging a repeat domestic violence offender and seeing them locked up and unable to continue to abuse the aggrieved, it is all rewarding work and why I love my job.”

The winner is able to select a charity to which the Rotary Club of Sunshine Coast Central will make a donation on their behalf.

Snr Const Senekal nominated Make-A-Wish Foundation as a nod to the tireless support it gave his family when his son Peter beat liver cancer at the age of nine.

Past Rotary District 9600 Governor Carolyn Krueger was one of the driving forces behind establishing the Sunshine Coast Central Police Officer of the Year Awards in 2018 with the Rotary Club of Sunshine Coast Central as a means of growing the program, which started in Darwin and has spread throughout Australia.

“The number of people at the awards night was incredible and the support we have been given from the general public as far as the number of nominations we received has been amazing,” she says.

“Reading the nominations that came in was such an eye-opener and a real glimpse into what police officers across the region do to go above and beyond for people in the community.

“We had nominations for every rank from constables right through the whole range. If I was allowed to have done it, I would have made them all finalists.”

Ms Krueger says Snr Const Senekal received a number of nominations from within his community.

“The message that came over is that he is an outstanding police officer and really does put his heart and soul into his local community,” she says.

DIVE DEEP Charity Build is calling for skydivers to jump for a cause. WORDS: Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane.

T

he Sunshine Coast’s latest fundraising initiative is taking charity to new heights.

Reid Anderton is hoping to get 20 adrenalinehungry participants to leap out of a plane at 15,000 feet for the inaugural 1000Skydives May Day event on May 26 to raise money for Sunshine Coast children’s charity SunnyKids.

Mr Anderton, the director of Charity Build, says as part of a new partnership, the company gifted SunnyKids a Little Mountain home to provide short-term accommodation for families escaping domestic violence.

The need was so great that a family moved in immediately.

With a long-held passion for helping those less fortunate, Mr Anderton says the fundraising goal of $20,000 at the May Day event will allow SunnyKids to keep the home operational without any cost to the charity or the families seeking refuge.

While building is a skill for Mr Anderton, skydiving is a passion and he has turned to the latter for his sky-high fundraising drive. “A lot of charities host bike rides, treks and fun runs, but jumping out of planes is something that hasn’t been done too much,” he says.

“Participants need to raise $1000 to pay for the jump and $1500 for a jump and video, but of course we encourage everyone to raise as much as they can because charities are always financially stretched.”

Mr Anderton was a competitive skydiver throughout his 20s and says the eight years he spent travelling around Australia with the extreme sport gave him some amazing memories.

It was his drive to pursue charity work in Africa that

ultimately led him to “give away” skydiving to focus on establishing Eagle’s Wings, a not-for-profit organisation that educates disadvantaged children in Zambia.

“This is why I felt such a strong connection to SunnyKids.

I understood it from the get-go and love how they work at a grassroots level,” he says. “They work so hard to help kids and their families to reach their full potential no matter what challenges they are facing and being a regional charity, they are small enough to be personal and you can have direct contact with the beneficiaries.”

SunnyKids CEO Chris Turner says Mr Anderton is a tremendous supporter of the charity and the thousands of kids it supports annually.

“We are grateful for his creative thinking and generous spirit and we hope that plenty of people will see the chance to ‘go jump’ for kids who need us, as a good idea,” he says.

While May 26 is dedicated to fundraising for SunnyKids, 1000Skydives, the fundraising arm of Charity Build, has launched a campaign to raise $1 million over the next 12 to 18 months to fund construction of more houses to assist those in need.

Representatives from a number of Coast businesses have already signed up to take the plunge at Skydive Noosa on May 26 and there are still positions left for those looking for a last-minute adrenaline fix for a good cause.

eidi Middleton achieved fame and fortune as the co-founder of groundbreaking Australian fashion label Sass & Bide.

She met fellow co-founder Sarah-Jane Clarke at high school in Brisbane and they went on to create one of the world’s most iconic fashion labels, loved by celebrities like Madonna, Beyoncé, Rihanna and Sarah Jessica Parker. Having moved on from Sass & Bide, Ms Middleton relocated to Paris, where she drew inspiration for her next creative venture – Artclub, an atelier of art, slow fashion and vintage clothing. She spoke with My Weekly Preview in the lead-up to her visit to the Sunshine Coast to speak at the Sunshine Coast Council’s event Fabric – Slow Fashion, Artful Living.

Are you happy with the way Artclub has been received since it launched? Yes, we are so happy with the response, I love that people have embraced this new model so well. I was unsure whether it would be understood immediately, yet our customers have really welcomed it and appreciate our product and ethos.

Could you explain what you mean by slow-fast fashion? Well, the rotation of product is smaller but more frequent. In the past, I would design with a six-month lead time, as it took that long to order fabric, collect sales, produce offshore and deliver worldwide.

This new model feels much lighter and more free. It’s more fluid and is much more conducive to a higher level of creativity. I can design something and have it made locally

with remnant fabric that’s available immediately. This means it can be available to buy via our site within two to three weeks from design. I love the freedom and spontaneity of this, not to mention how much gentler it is on both people and the earth.

How do you feel about the waste produced by the fashion industry? It’s not okay and we can’t feign ignorance, as there is so much information out there. There is no denying the scale of damage that the industry contributes to the earth’s current state. This was a large motivation behind why we designed the Artclub model the way we did.

Did you go through a period of sadness after letting go of Sass & Bide, or were you just happy to have more time and freedom to pursue new paths? I feel that I said goodbye to it emotionally in that last year of working in the business. The workload was so immense that I knew I couldn’t sustain another few years at that intensity. I’m proud that we left when it was in such good health. It was an incredible chapter of our lives.

How do the clothes available on Artclub differ from Sass & Bide? My design sensibilities are always evolving, so I feel that the clothes are different to what I designed back then. In saying that, there are definitely design hallmarks that remain, i.e. the dichotomy of masculine/feminine and the bold graphic silhouettes.

When you’re designing a new piece of clothing, do you picture it in your mind first, or do you see a particular fabric and imagine what it could become? Both! Sometimes the fabric dictates the design… other times I’ll sketch an idea then find a great fabric to fit it.

Who and what are your influences in art and fashion design? I love the Bauhaus art movement and also mid-century architecture and furniture. I have always admired the Italian designer Mollini for his interiors.

The range of garments on Artclub is currently small. Do you plan to keep it this size or will you offer a wider range in future?

We will always have between 10–20 styles available on our website and will only make between 10–15 of each style.

You use a lot of green – is that a colour you’re feeling particularly drawn to at the moment? Is it linked to your sustainable fashion ethic? Yes, I have always loved greens, from khakis to a pop of forest. It might be subconsciously more pronounced at the moment with sustainability being at the front of all of our minds!

Metallic fabrics like lamé pop up in Artclub’s range, as they did with Sass & Bide. What do you love about metallic looks in clothing?

I’ve always enjoyed metallic elements in fashion. There is no particular inspiration behind it. It’s just a personal love of reflective materials.

How has your time in Paris influenced your design aesthetic and the way you live your everyday life? I think it subtly influenced many layers of my design aesthetic. It can’t not have, there was endless inspiration every time I stepped outside. I’ll never tire of the magic and wonder of European life.

You always look incredible. Are you always well-dressed, even when you’re relaxing at home? No! You should see me today.

(Although I have been known to wear ball gowns and trainers to the local IGA!).

What are your go-to pieces for everyday wear? Whatever fits the mood. I’m a big believer in sensory dressing. Go with what suits your mood.

OUR MEDICOS ARE AMAZING

Sami Muirhead is sad about Game of Thrones finally coming to an end and has put out a call for another show to replace it. Is that even possible?

Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane was never as grateful for the medical services we have on the Sunshine Coast as the night her son couldn’t breathe.

I

have not been so sad since Expo 88 finished, Sex And The City came to an end and Powderfinger disbanded. You see, I have the blues over Game Of Thrones ending. I know, I know. It’s a just a TV show, but for the past eight years it has been a constant in my life.

Each week it has been a solid date with my husband and I on a Monday night. We have pretty much been parents and married for that exact amount of time.

No matter how tired we have been as parents to newborns, we have sat down together on the couch to watch the next episode. No matter what life has thrown at us, good and bad, we have poured a wine and bonded over dragons. We have gained grey hairs and a dress size or two and our kids have grown up, but GoT was there for the journey.

And the characters. Wow. Jon Snow is the quintessential good guy who never let me down. The Mother of Dragons was relatable because she went through ordeals that women have gone through since the beginning of time. Then there is Tyrion Lannister, a dwarf with the sharpest mind and kindest heart, who I think is my favourite character. I have always loved an underdog and I have always had such compassion for his life journey. But then there is Sansa Stark, who I have watched

grow up from a young girl to a powerhouse of a woman not to be messed with.

I have been reading a lot of David Gillespie’s Teen Brain book. It is a must-read if you have kids who use a smartphone or tablet. So this is pretty much every kid in Australia. The author talks about how we do not have to wait a whole week anymore for the next episode of our favourite show, we can binge on entire seasons at once.

Teens are addicted to that adrenalin hit that comes with watching the next episode of a show on YouTube and they do not have to learn to control those desires.

Remember in the old days we would wait for A Country Practice to come on our screens to watch Molly and Brendan battle the world? Then we grew up a little and Monday nights rocked because Friends was on. Sex and the City was my favourite show and I would count down the days to see what fabulously whacky outfit Carrie Bradshaw would be wearing.

I am not sure I will ever have a show as gripping as my past screen loves. It is the way of the world to expect and get instant gratification. So if you have any shows you can recommend, throw this old duck an email at sami.muirhead@eongroup.com.au.

I

t was around 2.45am when I heard a strange gasping sound coming from the hallway.

Still half asleep, I stumbled out of bed and turned the corner to see the outline of my five-year-old, hunched over, staggering towards my bedroom door.

“Mummy, I need air” was all he could manage to wheeze out and, in that instant, I was wide awake and racking my brain to figure out how I could fix this.

It is every parent’s worst nightmare to find themselves in a situation where they are powerless and I will never forget his wide eyes as panic set in and he continued to struggle for breath while simultaneously gagging because his little airways were so swollen closed.

This had come clean out of the blue.

No telltale snotty nose, niggling cough or fever that would suggest his little body was battling with a virus of some kind.

He had woken up unable to breathe and was burning up with a temperature of 41 degrees, seemingly out of nowhere.

It is times like this that make me so grateful for the first-class medical services we have on the Sunshine Coast. Although we live more than 25 minutes away from the Sunshine Coast University Hospital, an ambulance with empathetic and highly professional paramedics arrived in just 10.

In fact, the moment I told my son the ambulance was coming, the panic left his eyes and he began to marginally relax,

such was the impression the paramedics had left on him from a previous hospital visit.

The whole chain of care is incredible and our paramedics, who stabilised my son on route to the hospital, handed us over to a team of incredible nurses and doctors who kept us in for observation.

Far from being just another patient in room three, they engaged both my son and I with conversation and reassuring words and kept me informed about everything they were doing and what the next steps were whenever they came in to check up on him or administer more medicine.

And that special treatment is not just reserved for cute kids. I had an emergency appendectomy early last year and although I was a nervous wreck, having never undergone any form of surgery before, everyone from the surgery prep team to the nurses, who were on hand to bring me back to reality once I was back in the recovery ward, were beyond reproach.

The Coast has thousands of general practitioners, specialists, paramedics, air rescue crews and those who serve on our waterways, all helping us through some of the most difficult health challenges or accidents and we don’t often take pause to recognise the feats these superheroes perform every single day.

So from my family and the wider community, thank you from the bottom of our hearts for all that you do.

M

y five-year-old leans back in his chair, hands folded behind his head and sighs in content.

“That’s the best high tea I’ve ever had.”

Despite the fact that he has only ever sat through three high teas, I have to agree with his overzealous enthusiasm.

After all, who doesn’t love a pastry swan or chocolate mousse tart, topped off by a glass of French champagne (or lemonade in

my son’s case)? It’s the perfect way to kick off 24 hours in the city, a getaway that has become a travel tradition for our little family of three. Generally, our escapes to neighbouring Brisbane involve a hefty amount of retail therapy, dining in the sun along Queen Street Mall and lots of walking.

This time we have opted for the rest and relaxation approach. Our base is the fourand-a-half star Brisbane Marriott Hotel, considered a legendary staple of the city’s

hotel scene. It has recently unveiled a $20-million redesign and Malaysian-based company Duoz Design has successfully ensured the modern transformation conforms with the classic heritage style.

All 267 guest rooms and suites, event spaces and restaurant Motion Dining, have been reinvented to coincide with the rebirth of the neighbouring riverside precinct.

Each room offers stunning views of either the Brisbane River and its iconic Story Bridge, or the city skyline.

Our room, much to the excitement of our young traveller, overlooks the bridge, which shines bright in hues of red, green and purple as darkness descends on the river.

As our high tea concludes, tummies full and happy, I make my way up to the fourth floor, which is home to the award-winning Dome Spa Retreat. And, what a retreat it is.

I’m ushered into the dressing room to change into a fluffy white robe and slippers.

I’m in heaven already, and I haven’t yet begun my treatment. Whisked into a darkened room, complete with mosaic rain shower, I spend the next 90 minutes blissfully unaware of the stressors and business of outside life. This detox and revive treatment is worth every cent, and I emerge a new woman. Slowly sipping a magnesium drink in the warm autumn sun on the spa’s outside terrace, I am hesitant to return to ‘real life’.

Thankfully, real life at the Marriott involves fine dining, a luxurious bed and river views. We emerge from the hotel the following morning, and as we travel down the river on the City Cat towards South Bank Parklands, I breathe in the crisp air. It’s amazing what 24 hours of relaxation can do.

he 2018 release of Good Mood launched Ball Park Music into one of the band’s biggest years, but for frontman Sam Cromack it already feels like a “distant memory”.

“I have well and truly got my mind geared towards whatever is next for us, even though we haven’t officially started recording our next album,” he tells My Weekly Preview.

Good Mood is the Brisbane-based band’s fifth studio album. They toured it extensively in 2018, playing the biggest venues of their careers. They also received three ARIA Award nominations, while Triple J listeners voted Good Mood their number one album of 2018.

I found the book was really informative, easy to read, beautifully designed with graphs, weekly meal planners and awesome recipes.

I’m yet to work my way through them all, but I tried the smashed avo on toast with feta and chilli and found it super easy and delicious.

You can tailor the program to suit your lifestyle and choose which elements suit you best. For me, I did the 16:8 intermittent fasting on days I was really busy – so less inclined to be tempted by snacking or eating a large meal.

THE SQUEEZE IS ON The demand for low-maintenance living is putting pressure on the existing property market and forcing developers to build smaller homes.

Stockland’s townhome development Sway Birtinya is an example of the style of dwellings that are in short supply for the changing needs of the Sunshine Coast.

T

he rising popularity of low-maintenance homes shows no signs of abating in 2019 as more homebuyers recognise the benefits of living options that leave plenty of free time to enjoy life.

Affordability, prime locations and smart floorplans are just some of the reasons why buyers at all stages of life are turning their attention to townhomes, terraces and apartments, as well as adding second dwellings onto larger properties.

Investor Property managing director Mal Cayley says the Sunshine Coast needs a new suburb to be created every 12 to

14 months for the next 20 years to be able to keep up with the demand for property in the region.

“The real challenge in the changing face of the property market on the Coast is the type of property needed,” he says.

“Around 70 per cent of existing supply and approvals are for detached dwellings, usually three- to four-bedroom homes.

Interestingly, circa 60 per cent of current household types on the Coast are single or two-person households.

“This means that while the overall demand levels remain high, the under-supply of smaller detached dwellings, apartments, retirement living, townhouses, duplexes, villas and ‘dual living’ variants over all of the above is where the highest demand exists. The limited availability only exacerbates the need for smaller living options.

“While there is no doubt there is an oversupply of apartments in other parts of the country, we definitely need a greater number of smaller product to meet existing demand and also cater for the future.”

Mr Cayley says the region’s economic landscape is changing with projects like the Sunshine Coast University Hospital, the Maroochydore CBD, the airport expansion and the international submarine cable all attracting more young singles, couples and empty-nesters to the region to take advantage of the opportunity to enjoy an idyllic lifestyle while still being easily connected to the rest of the world.

“This diversification of the economy has triggered an expanding workforce, focus on innovation, huge infrastructure works and the highest internal migration rate per capita in the nation. All these factors are working in

symmetry to boost business confidence, which is sky high and therefore, the region remains an attractive option for owneroccupiers, renters and investors,” he says.

Stockland senior development manager Matt Patullo says townhome project Sway Birtinya is a prime example of the new dwellings buyers are seeking. “Well-designed townhomes are highly liveable, spacious and appealing to a wide range of homebuyers who want affordability and convenience without sacrificing style and luxury,” Mr Patullo says.

The trend towards what demographer Bernard Salt terms “walkable cities” is apparent in the Coast’s greenfield developments at Aura, Harmony and Birtinya, where buyers are opting for smaller blocks and dwellings in order to be close to schools, shops, parks and other amenities.

Mr Cayley says of the next 200,000 people yet to move to the Sunshine Coast, 35 per cent will move to the greenfield development areas and the rest will fit into existing properties or newly constructed infill dwellings.

Hinterland real estate agent Mike Burns has taken the next step in his successful career, setting up Burns Property in Palmwoods.

C

hange was the name of the game for a young Mike Burns, who spent his younger years travelling the world before sweating it out as a chef in a number of different kitchens and working a variety of odd jobs including tour guiding and home renovation.

But once he found real estate and the Palmwoods community, he knew he had found his calling. Mr Burns opened his agency under the Elders brand in 2005 and expanded to Woombye six years later. He has assisted hundreds of people from all walks of life to buy and sell property in the Sunshine Coast hinterland towns.

Earlier this month, Mr Burns decided it was time for another change, but this time it was to step out and continue to make his mark on the real estate industry without the umbrella of a franchise.

Burns Property is based out of Palmwoods, with the former Woombye office closing last week. Mr Burns is already preparing to increase his team following tremendous support from the community he has called home and served in for the past 15 years.

“I sold a property on the same day that Burns Property was launched,” he says.

“I’ve had three sales in just over one week. The energy shift has been incredible and it goes to show the importance of building long-term relationships and keeping it real, which have been mottos of mine.

“Longevity in this industry is really only created by honesty and integrity.”

Despite servicing a relatively small demographic of between 4000 and 4500 in his early days in real estate, thanks to his approach, Mr Burns was named among the elite Elders salespeople numerous times, placing him in the top 10 salespeople in Australia.

“There is no secret to success,” he says. “I find that the harder I work, the luckier I get.

“For me, it’s never about just getting a sale. It’s about working with people to get the best sale price possible. I really do believe you’ve got to do what you say you are going to do, follow up and make sure you overdeliver on what you promise and not the other way around.

“People who are looking to sell their home or to get a good result should choose an agent who has a proven track record and is not operating out of the back of their car.

I’ve been here for such a long time and have

seen so many agents come and go.”

With Palmwoods undergoing a multimillion-dollar aesthetic transformation with the Sunshine Coast Council investing in revitalising public spaces in town, Mr Burns says Palmwoods has had a “bit of a growth spurt”.

“It is attractive to so many people and still in high demand because there are

What boards are you going to take and how many? I am off on a secret mission soon to a remote island where tigers still roam. Actually, I may have made that part up – makes the story more exciting.
