ourteen years ago, I stood on the headland at Moffat Beach watching surfers rise with ease onto their boards and grace the rolling waves with their signature moves. They looked free; content. I was inspired. At 21, I had recently relocated to the Sunshine Coast from a small town where surfing as a kid had meant lying on a body board, gently bobbing in the calm water. I made the calls, found a surf school and geared myself up. And then I hesitated. All these years later, the closest I have ever been to experiencing that exhilarating freedom is squealing as my husband patiently tried to teach me how to stand on a board. I have a lot of admiration for surfers and each year, when we are home for the event, I still pay a visit to Moffat Beach to watch competitors in the Pa and Ma Bendall Memorial Contest. I love the comp’s history, the camaraderie and the talent. This edition, I chat with Reef Heazlewood, a Caloundra surfer who has his sights set on the fabled World Championship Tour. This weekend, he will display his talents as part of the local contest. If you are around this Easter, be sure to go along and enjoy the weekend-long event. You may even feel inspired to grab a board of your own. All of the details are on page 14. As for me, that desire to learn is still there. Who knows, maybe I’ll find the courage soon. ARE ELECTRICITY COMPANIES CASHING IN? There is no doubt many consumers and businesses are finding it increasingly difficult to pay their power bills, but are big energy companies really enjoying a run of record profits while customers struggle? Let’s take a look at the facts. WORDS: FactCheck for AAP.

THE STATEMENT “The big energy companies continue to take record profits, while Australian families and businesses continue to struggle under the burden of high energy prices.” Federal Energy Minister Angus Taylor advocating for greater consumer protections in the power sector, February 2019.

THE ANALYSIS The profits being reported by big power companies have prompted federal Energy Minister Angus Taylor to renew his push for greater protections for electricity consumers. AAP FactCheck has examined Mr Taylor’s assertion that companies such as AGL, Origin Energy and EnergyAustralia – often referred to as the big three of electricity retailers – are experiencing record profits as their customers struggle to pay their bills. In 2018, AGL reported an after-tax profit of $1.587 billion, up 194 per cent on the previous year. While this was a huge jump, it did not surpass the $1.596 billion net profit it reported in 2009, and was therefore not a record – or new highest – profit. Origin Energy recorded a $218-million statutory net profit in 2018 but made more in 2014, 2013 and 2012. Both companies have reported net losses

in the past five years, and together with the above figures, this establishes no pattern of ever-increasing earnings by two of the three biggest power companies in Australia. In its latest annual report, EnergyAustralia, owned by Hong Kong-based company CLP Group, made a $440 million operating profit – a 48.1 per cent jump on the previous year. This was the highest operating profit since CLP Group rebranded TRUenergy as EnergyAustralia after purchasing the retail operation from the New South Wales Government in 2011. While earnings have varied considerably over this time, no losses were reported by the final member of the ‘big three’. It is widely acknowledged that high electricity bills have had a negative impact on businesses and households. In her January 2019 written submission to the Senate Standing Committee on Economics

Inquiry into the Treasury Laws Amendment (Prohibiting Energy Market Misconduct) Bill 2018, AGL general manager for competition regulation and strategy Beth Griggs acknowledged customer concerns. “We recognise that despite some recent price reductions, high energy prices are having a significant impact on households and businesses, and that our customers’ concerns with these cost pressures need to be considered alongside those of energy security and environmental sustainability,” she said. A similar sentiment was expressed by Origin Energy CEO Frank Calabria in his submission to the same inquiry. “We agree with the government on the need to get electricity prices down for households and businesses,” he said. He rejected the Bill being considered, instead favouring 56 recommendations made in July 2018 by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC). The Federal Government had asked the ACCC to prepare a report for its Retail Electricity Pricing Inquiry, and it recommended a raft of measures aimed at fixing the causes of high electricity prices across the entire supply chain. “It is clear that most households are paying far too much for electricity,” ACCC chair Rod Sims said. “In addition, some of the most vulnerable in our community are forced to struggle through freezing winters and scorching summers, with many others also having difficulty paying their bills.” Before the inquiry and ACCC report, a 2017 paper titled Empowering Disadvantaged Households to Access Affordable Clean Energy

was released by the Australian Council of Social Service in collaboration with the Brotherhood of St Laurence and The Climate Institute. “Despite being an essential service, electricity prices are skyrocketing, disconnections have increased, the number of households experiencing measurable hardship has risen, and more households are rationing energy to the detriment of their health and well-being,” it said. The report said there were about three million people living below the poverty line in Australia but noted the number of people experiencing energy bill stress “is likely to be much higher than the poverty figures”. Australian Bureau of Statistics data from the Household Expenditure Survey released in August 2017 showed the average weekly household spend on domestic fuel and power costs had increased by 25 per cent between 2009/10 and 2015/16. AAP FactCheck concludes big power companies are not continuing to take record profits, but a cross-section of sources concur that high electricity prices have led to stress and/or hardship for consumers, despite recent price cuts.

RIDING HIGH The Coast’s newest surfing star, Reef Heazlewood, is one of a legion of surfers who have a soft spot for the Pa & Ma Bendall Memorial Surf Contest. WORDS: Candice Holznagel.

A

s the sun rises across Moffat Beach, a young surfer skims his fingers lightly across the surface of the glistening deep blue water beneath his board. He feels at peace; calm and content by the touch of the ocean. As the wave rises behind him, he springs to his feet and drives his short board into his signature air game. It’s hard to believe that only six months ago, many of the global surfing circuit crew had not yet heard the name Reef Heazlewood. How things have changed, the years of dedication and persistence now paying off for the Caloundra 19-year-old. So, how did it happen? Well, first there was Hawaii’s Rocky Point – the epicentre of aerial amelioration – where Reef captured the attention of the surfing world with his epic moves. Then in November he posted a video to Instagram demonstrating just how talented he is on a board. The post amassed thousands of views and, as industry magazines declared his video was breaking the internet, his peers started to take notice. Tackling the Banzai Pipeline during the Volcom Pipe Pro followed, with Reef once again proving he is a solid contender for the prestigious World Surf League Championship Tour (CT). But, it was this month’s effort as a wild card entry at the CT Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast that catapulted him to stardom. After winning the trials and being granted entry

into the main event, the Caloundra young gun took out fellow Coasty, and pro surfer, Julian Wilson. Advancing to Round 4, Reef placed second, which secured him a ninth place ranking. “I’ve been looking up to Julian since I was young and he is such an awesome surfer,” Reef tells My Weekly Preview. “Being able to go out there and entertain with him, and I guess spar with him, was really awesome. To take that win… I was so

With his sights set firmly on qualifying for the CT in 2020, this well-mannered and down-toearth teen shows no signs of slowing. Currently ranked 15 on the Word Surf League Qualifying Series (QS), he hopes to secure wild card entry into a few more CT events to improve his QS rank through 2019. “I hope to finish in the top 10 at the end of the year. That’s the goal for me. This year is to

do the qualifying series and then next year to be on the CT full time.” This weekend, we’ll have the chance to see Reef in his home surf in the Pa and Ma Bendall Memorial Surf Contest. Celebrating its 45th year, the Moffat Beach contest has become an iconic event on the surfing calendar, and it is one that runs deep through Reef’s salty veins. “I’ve been in the Pa and Ma contest a couple of times. Moffat is my home beach. “Dad started taking me out and having me on his shoulders when I was three. It [surfing] all started then. It was something that I really wanted to do. “I love the beach and just the culture of it. I guess it’s the way I’ve been brought up, just living at the beach. To surf as a local and to compete locally is amazing.” Hosted by the Caloundra-based WindanSea Surf Club from April 19 to 21, the classic is the second longest running surf contest in Australia and offers a total prize pool of $10,000. Its history is iconic. Named in honour of Charles Ben ‘Pa’ Bendall – the grandad of Queensland surfing – the first contest was held in 1974, following his death. After Pa’s wife Marjorie ‘Ma’ died in 2001, the event was renamed to incorporate her moniker. In its early days, it was one of the richest contests in the world and attracted professional surfers Wayne (Rabbit) Bartholomew, Simon Anderson and Hawaiian

legend Gerry Lopez. Through the years, it has continued to attract big name surfers including WSL World Champion Joel Parkinson, Wade Goodall, Robbie Sherwell and Dave Reardon-Smith. WindanSea club president Terry Landsberg says the 2019 event will feature 130 competitors from Australia, Indonesia and Fiji. “The contest is more so about what Pa and Ma were about and that is helping young surfers over the years. Pa would be surfing, while Ma would be making a cup of tea and biscuits for surfers to have on the beach. It was about camaraderie,’’ Mr Landsberg says. “Going through the numbers, we’ve got a good showing this year.” This year’s undertaking includes the likes of Sunshine Coast pro surfer Eli Steele, Jake Colreavy, the Gold Coast’s Maddy Job and Sophie McCulloch, who is ranked 12 on the Women’s Qualifying Series. Mr Landsberg is encouraging people to settle in at Moffat Headland and experience a little of what the Sunshine Coast surfing community is about. “The contest is a feel-good event,’’ he says. “It has been a springboard for many young surfers moving into the professional ranks, with past winners including Australian and world champions. It has also made a significant contribution to the community fabric of Caloundra and helped raise the profile of the region through international publicity created by the contest.” myweeklypreview.com.au

‘Pa’ is acknowledged as the grandad of surfing in Queensland. His love affair with the sport began in 1959 at the age of 50. He and his wife Marjory (Ma) settled in Caloundra in the 1950s and their Bulcock Beach home, Harmony Lodge, became an institution for surfers, who were welcomed in with open arms. At the time, there were only a handful of other surfers living locally and the pair became known as the mother and father of surfing on the Sunshine Coast. Pa formed the invitational Moffateers in 1966 as a club to promote integrity and sportsmanship in the sport of surfing. He encouraged the surfing youth of the Sunshine Coast to maintain their good character by offering them free membership to the club. Using the club contests as training and

conditioning for more challenging contests, Pa encouraged the young Moffateers to compete nationally. In 1973 Pa passed away and his funeral service was conducted overlooking his beloved Moffat waves. His ashes were scattered from a plane over the water. In August 1973, a memorial plaque was unveiled in what is now known as the Pa Bendall Park on Moffat Headland. The contest is a memorial to Pa’s enthusiasm for surfing and his efforts in promoting the sport and encouraging the young surfers of Caloundra and worldwide. The first Pa Bendall Memorial contest was held at Moffat Beach in February 1974 in three- to four-foot surf. First prize offered up $1500. It continues through Saturday and wraps up on Sunday with the finals taking place from 7am through to 2pm. The Easter Bunny will make an appearance this year. Categories include open men’s, masters (over 40s), legends (over 50s), cadet girls (U16), junior boys (U18), open women, senior men’s (over 30s) and cadet boys (U16). It was established in 2013 with a single event in Sydney and in 2019 expanded to 11 events around the country. The Sunshine Coast will have its own BLW on June 16, with the route running between Coolum and Mooloolaba. The event raises money for the Mito Foundation to create greater awareness and support for those affected by mitochondrial disease, a debilitating genetic disorder that robs the body’s cells of energy, causing multiple organ dysfunction or failure and potentially death. FLU TRIAL SET TO BEGIN University of the Sunshine Coast Clinical Trials is about to begin research into a ‘universal’ influenza vaccine. There are many different flu viruses and not all are covered by current vaccines. USC Clinical Trials director Lucas Litewka says this trial is an important step in identifying a broad-spectrum vaccine that could transform global health and potentially eliminate the need for annual flu vaccinations. COAST TRAVELLERS CONNECTED TO THE WORLD The Sunshine Coast will be opened up to Europe, Asia and America, while offering locals the opportunity to connect directly with a vast number of international flights, now that Qantas’ new direct morning service from Sydney has begun. It is the second daily service offered by Qantas and reflects strong growth in demand from business and leisure travellers wanting to fly direct to and from the Coast. Sunshine Coast Airport has been the fastest growing airport in Australia, with 43 months of consecutive passenger growth, and year-on-year average growth of nine per cent. The airport’s CEO Andrew Brodie (pictured, centre) says connectivity is key for regional airports and the new service will not only be able to deliver international visitors to our region more efficiently, it will mean local residents can fly out of their own airport at a convenient time and connect directly to international flights out of Sydney. “As any Sunshine Coast resident knows, the vast amount of road works on the Bruce Highway has meant that travelling to Brisbane for domestic and international flights is often impacted by significant traffic delays and disruptions,” he says. “The new direct Qantas services will save both time and worry for Sunshine Coast travellers planning overseas travel. The addition of a second Qantas service highlights the strong demand by business travellers, as the Sunshine Coast becomes an increasingly diverse market, with a rapidly growing business sector.”

THE QUEENSLAND CARTOON TAKING ON THE WORLD If you have young children, you’ll no doubt be familiar with Bluey, the adorable kids’ cartoon that has become the most watched show on ABC iView and has captured worldwide attention. We meet its executive producer, Daley Pearson, who hails from the Sunshine Coast. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw.

ustralia has fallen head over heels in love with the ABC Kids show Bluey, which follows the adventures of a six-year-old blue heeler who loves to play and turn every day life into extraordinary adventures. With more than 40 million downloads since its launch only six months ago, it has become the most watched program ever on ABC iView – and three of the show’s key players hail from the Sunshine Coast. The Sunshine Coast’s Daley Pearson is one of the executive producers of the program and the co-founder and director of Ludo Studios, the Emmy award-winning production company and animation studio behind Bluey’s phenomenal success. Another of the show’s producers, Sam Moor, is from Buddina and animator Caitlin O’Brien is from Buderim. Last week it was announced BBC Studios and Penguin Random House would bring three Bluey books into Australian stores by Christmas and deals for international distribution are underway, with Mr Pearson

and his team taking the risky move of stipulating the characters’ accents must remain true-blue Australian. “It was a big thing to insist on because

you could lose sales,” Mr Pearson says. “You never know if you’re going to upset someone. “We had amazing people who were interested and loved it and we wanted to go

with them, but then the subject of dubbing started coming up. We had a discussion and decided we weren’t going to change the accents [for English-speaking countries]. Fortunately, it went over really well and everyone agreed really quickly.” Bluey’s widespread appeal lies in its charming storylines centred around family life with a mum, dad and two daughters finding themselves in everyday scenarios both children and adults can relate to. “Part of Bluey’s appeal is that it has never spoken down to kids; it has always been on their level,” Mr Pearson says. The dialogue is very Australian, without being too ‘Crocodile Dundee’, in the words of Mr Pearson. It’s a show families genuinely love to watch together, with plenty of laughs for all ages. The show is set in Brisbane and features sub-tropical leafy streets and Queenslander homes. It is created using animation software called CelAction, which Ludo Studios trained its team of 50 animators to use. For many of the show’s animators, it’s

LOCAL NEWS their first job and Mr Pearson is proud of the opportunity the show has created for up and coming Queensland animators. “I grew up in Coolum and went to school in Nambour,� he says. “The first show I did was based in Coolum. It was called The Strange Calls and was a comedy we made for the ABC. They did a remake at NBC in the US. That was our first door opening to wanting to do local stuff. “I met Joe [Brumm] who created Bluey a few years ago now. He had this amazing idea and had done a lot of time in London and worked on Charlie and Lola. He came back and said he’s waited 10 years or so to create this show. “It really is about him and his family. My co-founder Charlie and Joe, they both have daughters and it’s very much about dads and daughters. Dave McCormack, who is the voice of Bluey’s dad Bingo, has daughters, so he has that dynamic as well. The show is definitely about families, but it’s also about dads and daughters.� Since its premiere on October 1 last year, Bluey has topped the iTunes Kids Chart, peaking at number one and consistently remaining in the top five. So just what is the magic formula that has resonated with so many people? “I think Bluey is the best thing in the world and I think it has come at a good time,� says Mr Pearson. “I don’t think Australia has had a family show like this for a little while. Its bracket is preschool, but we set out for it to be a co-viewing show. Often when you say that it’s a bit of a lie, but I think Joe has accomplished that. It’s got the relationship between parents and kids, the games they play as a family, it’s got the City Cat, Newfarm Park, the parents have a condo on the coast, they Skype from their apartment. A lot of those little things add up to more and more relatability. “It’s also quite authored. We made it in

Built in 1891, the Dularcha tunnel is one of only two tunnels along the old narrow-gauge North Coast Line between Brisbane and Gympie – a serious labour-intensive feat. Tip: Take a torch.

Grab a kayak and paddle over to this pretty island located across from Maroochydore’s Bradman Avenue. You can also walk across the footbridge, which is a fun journey in its own right. Spend some time exploring the island before enjoying a picnic lunch. There are toilet facilities on the island.

EWEN MADDOCK DAM: FERNY FOREST MTB LOOP NOOSA NATIONAL PARK: EMU MOUNTAIN Also known as Peregian Mountain, this popular spot boasts a 360-degree view of Coolum and surrounds. reparations are well underway to mark Anzac Day across the Sunshine Coast on April 25. This is the 105th year since the Gallipoli landing. Thousands of people are expected to attend the dawn services and mid-morning services being held across the region. Nambour RSL Sub-Branch secretary Neil Friend says he is always pleasantly surprised to see the growing turnout of people of all ages to services throughout the region. “When I was first posted to Canberra back in the early ’90s, myself and a mate of mine would attend the dawn service at the war memorial and there would be 300 people maximum,” he says. “We’d all be clustered around the

podium and now, down in Canberra, you’ve got to park kilometres away before you can get anywhere near the place. “The biggest thing is the fact that Anzac Day services seem to be attracting more and more people to keep the memory alive, which is wonderful. I suspect a lot of that has to do with the education being provided to the young people.” Mr Friend, a former navy officer, gave the Anzac Day address last year and says this year, Conspicuous Service Cross recipient colonel Scott Gills will speak at the dawn service and ex-Air Force Vietnam Veteran Len Bebbington will address the main mid-morning service. “At Nambour, we have five schools involved in the parade and local students sing the Australian and New Zealand national anthems for the services,” he says. “It is a truly multi-generational gathering, with kindergarten students marching for the first time last year, and joining us again this year, and we have jeeps that bring the older generation through. Among them this year is [Member for Nicklin] Marty Hunt’s wife Kelly’s grandmother, who served in the second World War. She is now 92.”

ANZAC DAY EMBRACED BY NEW GENERATIONS

Remi Rafter joined the Army straight out of school and spent 13 years serving here and overseas. Here, he shares his views on the continuing significance of Anzac Day, especially for younger generations of Australians and those newly arrived. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw.

F

or Remi Rafter, Anzac Day isn’t just about honouring the sacrifices made by Australia’s servicemen and women. For the former Army engineer, it’s about something equally important. “Anzac Day is about more these days,” he says. “It’s about appreciating that the Australian way of life is as good as it gets. It’s about acknowledging and being grateful for the freedoms we enjoy, which I believe a lot of people take for granted. We’re very fortunate here. Having spent time in the Army and going to a lot of underprivileged countries, I’ve got a good understanding of how fortunate we are in Australia. “The Australian way of life, including the freedom and prosperity we all enjoy today, has come at a cost,” he says. “Our current and ex-service men and women are highly respected as a result of this.” It’s a sentiment shared by many Australians, least of all those who have served and have a deep understanding of the sacrifices made and the dangers faced, often at a young age. Mr Rafter was born at Nambour Hospital and grew up on the Sunshine Coast. He joined the Army straight out of school and served for 13 years, leaving four years ago at the age of 30. Now living at Alexandra Headland, he’s the Queensland acquisition manager for Pindan, a privately-owned property development and construction company. “I always had an interest in engineering and construction and I wanted something challenging, something a bit more exciting,” he says. “At the time I joined the Army, I probably didn’t fully appreciate what I was getting myself into. You’re 17 years old and you’re not really sure what you want to do. As an outsider looking in, you don’t fully appreciate the magnitude of the tasks the Army does.” Mr Rafter studied civil engineering at the Australian Defence Force Academy and completed officer training at the Royal Military College, Duntroon. Following completion of training, he served in a variety of roles as an officer in the Royal Australian Engineers, including combat engineer positions at the 1st Combat Engineer Regiment (Darwin) and construction and project management positions at 21st Construction Squadron (Brisbane), and 19th Chief Engineer Works (Sydney).

Training for the Army meant being constantly challenged, not just physically, but academically. “You learn about the whole history of Australia and our involvement in all the wars to date,” he says. “That’s quite a humbling experience. You’re sitting there wearing the uniform at the time, knowing there’s been many tens of thousands of people before you that have been in much more challenging situations. I think every serving personnel in the military is always constantly hopeful they can live up to the expectations of those who’ve gone before.” Mr Rafter served in Australia and overseas, including Afghanistan, where he planned and delivered living quarters to

protect troops from rocket attacks. “The bases where our troops were in Afghanistan were constantly under various attacks,” he says. “We were in a situation where we were in the middle of Afghanistan trying to get construction materials in and it was very difficult. We had to rely heavily on local labour, dealing with local construction companies and the challenges associated with that, including the security issues associated with using local people.” Here at home, he led a team of tradesmen to construct medical facilities in the remote Indigenous community of Kalumbaru in northern Western Australia and led the combat engineering team providing high-risk search capability for the security of the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting in Perth. After more than a decade serving his country, Mr Rafter is now enjoying life back on the Sunshine Coast, which is all the sweeter given where he’s been. Every year, he joins the mates with whom he has served to attend an Anzac Day dawn service. “This is usually at a different location every year – this year it will be at Mooloolaba,” he says. “It has become very important to me to spend Anzac Day with this group of mates and reflect on our service and the service of others. We have a very strong and unique friendship. “It is important to ensure Anzac Day continues to be relevant for the next generation of Australians and Australians recently arrived. It is pleasing to see younger generations of Australians to take interest and be involved in Anzac Day commemorations. “I encourage not just my family, but everyone I come across to appreciate the great country we live in – people of all ages and backgrounds should all find their own way to develop their understanding of the Anzac legacy.”

MUCH-NEEDED RELIEF ON THE WAY?

he much-fatigued Australian consumer could find some respite in the second half of this year as the paths of fiscal and monetary policy combine to impart some muchneeded relief. Consumption has been grinding lower as high household indebtedness, a near-zero savings ratio and low wage growth have constrained the consumer. These constraints have been exacerbated by sinking house prices in Sydney and Melbourne. A fiscal policy boost is coming, no matter who emerges victorious in next month’s federal election. The government’s budget looked set to impart the largest fiscal boost to the economy since the GFC response a

Meanwhile, in his budget reply, opposition leader Bill Shorten offered more money for low-income earners but said the Labor Party – favoured by the polls to win the looming election – would reject the second stage of the government’s tax plans that would have benefitted middle- and high-income earners. In any case, tax relief will be a policy centrepiece for both Labor

As an added boost, our economists recently shifted their call to two interest rate cuts from the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) in the September quarter of this year, which would take the cash rate down to one per cent. The banks are unlikely to pass the full extent of any cuts through to borrowers, but we would envisage a reduction in

mortgage rates of 0.35 per cent to 0.40 per cent. This move should, in theory, alleviate some of the pressure on house prices, which have been on the slide now for 18 months in Sydney and Melbourne. Furthermore, it could slow or maybe even turn the tide in home loan approvals, which have been falling sharply over the past year. At the very least, the combination of supportive fiscal and monetary policy should serve to avert the much-feared lurch downward in consumption. Our economists expect consumption to pick up and stabilise at around a two per cent seasonally adjusted annual rate this year before firming in early

2020, which is still anaemic against the post-GFC average but a marked improvement on the annualised rate of 1.6 per cent in the December quarter of 2018. The slide in wages growth post the mining boom has been a key drag on consumption and seems to be a more vexing issue for policy makers. appy Easter! ‘The Festival Of Jesus’, as my mate Toddy calls it. It is a special and fun time of the year for all ages. Not only does it spread the values of Christianity, but it’s also great for the little kids who love chocolate and the Easter Bunny, and super for adults who partake in a few extra wines and seafood over the holiday period. But can we talk about hot cross buns please? The world has gone bonkers, with no less than 20 new hot cross bun hybrid flavours released this year. It is as crazy as that final show of Married At First Sight. We have seen chocolate hot cross buns, apple and cinnamon hot cross buns, and white chocolate and raspberry hot cross buns. Just as I was getting over my anger towards Coles for getting my kids addicted to collecting those fruit and vegetable Stikeez, the grocery giant has done something even worse with its new hot cross bun flavours. There’s sticky date pudding with butterscotch sauce hot cross buns, a black forest cake flavoured hot cross bun and a Belgian choc cherry hot cross bun. I am a purist. I like original hot cross buns heated up in the oven with butter. Plain and simple. Why do we have to mess with perfection? These new novelty concoctions should not really even be called hot cross buns. They are fancy bread cakes with a cross decorating them. Apparently we have the millennials to blame. The big brands want the millennial

dollar and this age group likes the products of yesteryear, but with a modern day twist. There is even hot cross bun flavoured ice-cream on the market. And strawberry milk has gone fancy with the release from Arnott’s of the strawberry milk Iced VoVo flavour. There is also a lime milk that is Mint Slice biscuit flavour. Bottle shops have followed too. You can now buy gin infused with just about every flower or fruit ever invented. Rhubarb gin.

“I am a purist. I like original hot cross buns heated up in the oven with butter’ Strawberries and cream gin. Spit-roasted pineapple gin. Elderflower gin. And if this flavour fusion frenzy is not bad enough, you can also buy raspberry Maltesers. Even Aldi has got in on the act and is selling frozen chips in a sweet chilli and truffle oil flavour. No! All you need is a serving of hot chips coated in tomato sauce with lashings of salt. Serve the chips in paper and eat them in a park and you have perfection. Finish off your Easter feast with a plain hot cross bun and you are pretty much Nigella Lawson. Enjoy this most wonderful time of the year.

I

expected parenting to be a learning experience but didn’t realise how much it would teach me about myself. It’s also changed me and given me new insights about my own upbringing. It must have been challenging for my young parents to balance their working and home lives, raising four children in a small town and a different era of thinking. When I was in preschool, my 20-something mother was voted ‘Housewife of the Year’ and the photo of her wearing a minidress and the winner’s sash, sporting a beehive hairdo and a big dimpled smile, for years was proudly displayed alongside our family portraits. I found it funny, still do, but can understand how rewarding it must have felt to her. From 19, my mother ran our household while working full-time in three businesses. She often worked all night from a small counter space in the kitchen. No matter what time you woke up, that light was on. She created a new way of managing small business that today has become a national program, without any fanfare. My father was a doctor with a small country town outlook. He worked non-stop in his own practice and making rounds at two hospitals and home visits. I rarely saw him. We were discouraged from bothering him unless we were ill and I feel I hardly knew him. Some of my childhood friends have great memories of him tending to them when they were sick, and he is well-respected for his many years of

medicine and research he contributed to university projects in his own time. I am told he had a genuinely caring bedside manner and it fits with my memories of him. I left home for university long before my parents had any spare time. My childhood was brief, busy, comfortable and structured around achievement, but there just wasn’t much time for holidays, hugs or being together. My folks did what they knew best. In contrast, I married later and had my son later, and every day I’m learning there are no rules for raising a happy kid. I’ve

THE FRENCH FILM FESTIVAL IS BACK

he 12th annual Sunshine Coast French Film Festival is gearing up to be the biggest yet, with a long weekend of entertainment featuring seven movies in three cinemas and two special events. The well-loved event is produced by the Alliance Française de la Sunshine Coast with the generous support of local companies and the Noosa Film Society. The Festival launches on May 3 at Noosa 5 Cinemas with a gala soiree before the screening of The Trouble With You (pictured). This sparkling comedy, one of the biggest audience hits of Cannes 2018, is an irresistible mix of laughs, action and romance. The May 4 screening is Non-Fiction, a witty movie starring the beautiful Juliette Binoche, that will take in the Parisian publishing world. On Saturday night, Girl – a deeply moving and intelligent first feature from Belgian director Lukas Dhont – is about Lara, a 15-year-old girl born in the body of a boy, who dreams of becoming a ballerina.

On Sunday, the festival moves over to the Majestic Cinema in Nambour with three movies. The young and young-atheart will enjoy Asterix and the Magic Potion, followed by The Ideal Palace, based on the remarkable true story of Joseph Ferdinand Cheval, a stunning and engrossing account of love and dedication. The day will wrap up with Who You Think I Am, a beguiling story, part-drama, part-suspense. Between films, tapas and wine will be on offer at the Bison Bar. As a crowning finale, the Big Screen Caloundra will screen Sink or Swim, an unashamedly French take on the challenges of 21st century masculinity, reuniting an impressive cast of French A-list acting talent. For one night only, a magnificent collection of Australian musical talent celebrates the music and the life of guitarist Phil Emmanuel and the posthumous release of his final recording Thunderbird Legacy. Brother and famed international guitarist Tommy Emmanuel says he is excited about the release of his brother’s album with a special event to be held in Nambour. “I think Thunderbird Legacy is Phil’s best work and I know his fans, and guitar fans, are going to love it too,” Mr Emmanuel says. In 2017, Phil Emmanuel hit Diamond Valley Studios with his band, guest guitarist Jacob Funnell and producer/musician Parris Macleod. The eclectic session included favourite tunes, cinema themes, and new original songs. The result was Thunderbird Legacy, finally mastered by Don Bartley the day

before Phil passed away in May 2018. The guitarist had been excited about the recording and had been planning future productions. The album will be officially launched on April 24, with a concert event, featuring an extensive line-up of some of Australia’s finest established and emerging musicians, paying tribute to the much-loved guitarist. Phil’s former studio band and a selection of special guests, including his daughter, singer-songwriter guitarist Jesse Emmanuel, all feature in the star-studded concert line up. “This will be an amazing night, an authentic tribute to his legacy, and I look forward to seeing you all there in Nambour,” Mr Emmanuel says. MARSHMALLOW EASTER BUNNIES INGREDIENTS • 2 cups sugar • 1 cup boiling water • 2 tbsp gelatin • 1 tsp vanilla extract • Pinch of salt • Food colouring • Olive or other oil spray • Bunny or other Easter-themed moulds • 2 cups coconut (optional)

METHOD Dissolve the gelatin in boiling water. Add sugar to a separate bowl and add gelatin mixture. Mix for 10 to 15 minutes or until marshmallow is very thick and white. Add vanilla and salt to mixture while still mixing. Use oil spray to grease moulds, then spoon in mixture and smooth top with a knife or spoon. Place moulds in the fridge for about an hour, or until solid. Place coconut in a snap lock bag. Dissolve food colouring in a few drops of water, then pour into bag. Seal the bag and shake until coconut is uniformly coloured. Remove marshmallow from moulds, cover with coconut or just leave them plain and enjoy.

Retirees will have the opportunity to learn the secrets of decluttering and downsizing at a free workshop to be hosted at Living Gems Caboolture Riverfront on May 15. Motivational speaker, author and interior designer Tanya Lewis (pictured), known as The Eco Organiser, will share her knowledge at the hour-long Declutter your Life workshop. Attendees will learn how to ethically declutter, how to identify clutter and how to downsize and live life well – all while saving money. Resort sales manager Sherry McOmish says while decluttering is ‘on trend’ at the moment, retirees have been doing it for years when they go through the process of downsizing. “The workshop is designed to help you start the process and give you some helpful tips along the way,” she says. This is achieved by exploring strategies to better organise and manage household clutter. Ms Lewis says the audience will be encouraged to rethink their relationship with clutter in order to live richer, happier lives. “I will cover topics such as how to honour and respect your treasures, how to

save money and energy and how to let go of ‘stuff’,” she says. COAST SET TO SOAR WITH NEW SUBMARINE CABLE We look at exactly how the submarine cable will benefit the Sunshine Coast and its effect on our property market. WORDS: Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane.

T

he world is on the cusp of the fourth industrial revolution and the Sunshine Coast is uniquely positioned to maximise the opportunities that are poised to abound. According to property investment expert and futurist, Investor Property’s Mal Cayley, although the Coast continues to enjoy multibillion-dollar investment in sustainable game-changing projects that will create lasting change for the region, it is the future submarine cable that will catapult the Coast to greatness. Mr Cayley believes the power of this project is being underestimated as the capabilities of having a subsea cable linked directly to Maroochydore are not properly understood. “If you’re thinking we already have internet, what’s the big deal? The big deal is there is a clear correlation between subsea cables and macro-economic growth in terms of GDP, incomes, capital formation and trade,” he says. “That is to say that as a country increases their connectivity, their economy expands. Importantly, there aren’t any real examples of a regional economy like the Sunshine Coast receiving such a boost. If at the macroeconomic level there is a massive boost, and there is much being said about its effect on the Queensland economy, we can only imagine what the impact will be on the Sunshine Coast and how this city by the beach will change forever.” The cable is touted to make telecommunications faster, cheaper and more robust and will in turn make the region highly attractive to data-sensitive or latency-sensitive sectors that are seeking the quickest possible access to the Asian markets. Research by RTI Connectivity, who is delivering the cable in conjunction with the Sunshine Coast Council and the Queensland Government, shows every time a cable is connected to a country, it improves gross domestic product, creates jobs, increases incomes and boosts trade, airports, ports, rail lines and connectivity between cities across the nation. “The importance for our trade and national connectivity is huge,” Mr Cayley says. “All of the cables going into Sydney are within 35 kilometres of one another and most of the network in Australia is on copper, restricting the ability to move that information. “When you consider that in the days of dial-up, it would take a day to download a movie, 4K movies downloaded over the internet connected to the NBN still take around an

hour-and-a-half to download and you will be able to get 7K movies, that’s the extent of the technology now, from the optic cable connected to Maroochydore downloaded in 0.8 of a second. “This demonstrates how massive it will be for the banks, the finance industry, the health sector as well as other data-intensive businesses. This capability will be used not only to leverage opportunities, but to change the way we live.” According to Mr Cayley, this fourth industrial revolution will change just about every aspect of life as we know it. “The first revolution, where we saw the use of steam, was some 200 years ago. The second, electricity, was 100 years ago, and the third, the introduction of computers and the digital age, was 50 years ago,” he says. “The fourth, which we are on the cusp of now, will be so significant that it will change everything in the next 25 years. The key thing about the Sunshine Coast, which I don’t think most people have comprehended yet, is that every submarine cable in the world is connected to a major city. Ours will be the first cable connected to a regional city anywhere. “If a submarine cable is significant for a nation and huge for Queensland, imagine what it means for the first regional city to benefit from such a connection. For it to come at a time when data is king, it will undoubtedly transform how we live.” When it comes to the property market, Mr Cayley says there is “undersupply bearing down on us”. The Property Council is warning that if all we do is achieve the council’s dwelling approval targets, we’ll have an undersupply the size of Nambour by 2040. Mr Cayley says dwelling completions have historically been less than 80 per

cent of the number of approvals. “For example last year we only completed just over 2100 new dwellings but needed over 3800 just to meet the growth, not to mention an existing undersupply of 20 per cent. “All the projections that look into what is happening on the Sunshine Coast have often not factored the submarine cable in, and its job stimulation and subsequent demand for property to house new employees will come on top of [those projections].” At a highly anticipated Sunshine Coast Property Market Update event with renowned and awarded developer Ron Grabbe from RGD Group, Mr Cayley says the Coast already boasts the top spot for infrastructure investment per capita in Australia as well as some of the lowest vacancy rates in the country and high-performing key suburbs in terms of property sales. The Coast has the highest internal migration in the country and analysts predict the number of full-time jobs will double in the next 15 years, along with the overall value of the economy. “This is all because of the gamechangers, including the Maroochydore CBD, the airport expansion, the upgrades to public transport, large residential developments and, of course, the submarine cable,” he says. “This combination of events is unprecedented and the cable is coming at a time in history when the importance of data is about to explode exponentially. If you looking for an outing this weekend, head to Moffat Beach for the Pa and Ma Bendall. The guys at WindanSea Surf Club put on the best show in town and it has such a great vibe. Additionally, Bells Beach starts in Victoria. These are two of the longestrunning surf competitions in Australia. Where does the Easter Bunny get his eggs from? An eggplant. Happy Easter peeps.
