I

remember the first time my husband and I left our little boy for a few hours. As silly as it sounds, I was an emotional mess. Perhaps it was mum guilt or I was still in that first-born bubble. Either way, I spent our night out constantly checking my phone and fretting.

Fast forward four or so years and I’ve come a long way. I’m still hesitant to leave our little boy for an entire night, but the occasional date night with my husband is a welcome break from day-to-day life. Who doesn’t love venturing out for dinner and a movie? (Hubby, if you are reading this, I also love flowers…)

It’s no surprise that between work, kindy and mum duties, relationship time for couples can be a little haphazard. But, sharing in laughter, talking and spending quality time is vital for connection.

With Valentine’s Day this week, deputy editor Leigh Robshaw decided to dive into the dating world and find out from the experts what it takes to keep a relationship alive.

One interesting study revealed that those couples who had a ‘date night’ once a month were less likely to separate. It’s food for thought. The story is on page eight. What are you waiting for?

Mmm that is a tough one. I love I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here, but I don’t have too much time for TV to be honest.

Can you nominate a day in your life that turned out to be a turning point and why? The day I decided to launch my business. It was scary leaving a good job, but I knew deep down I had to try this and reach as many people as I could to help transform their lives too.

Your greatest regret? I don’t have any. I live each day knowing there is a lesson in it, and it gets me to the next.

Best advice you’ve been given? My dad actually said when I was at school many years ago, ‘Kate, It doesn’t matter what you do in life, even a garbage collector, just be the best at it!’

What is your favourite place on the Sunshine Coast and why? I would say Currimundi Beach near the lake. It is a gorgeous spot to sit and have a picnic with dogs, kids and a glass of wine.

If you could change one thing on the Sunshine Coast, what would it be? Higher salaries. The Sunny Coast is not keeping up with the rest of the high-growth locations in Australia.

Best day in your life and why? Obviously, I would say my wedding day (I would be in trouble if I didn’t)

What achievement are you most proud of? Stepping out into my own business and doing more than I could have ever expected. People from all over the country are referred to me now and I am so humbled that I get to change people’s lives for a living.

You are happiest when? I am with my kids and hubby at the dinner table every night. We all go around the table and say one thing we are grateful for each day – the kids’ answers are just adorable!

What frustrates you the most? People that whinge and do nothing about it to help themselves.

How do you deal with your frustrations? Vent! I am the queen at venting.

If you could have dinner with any three people, dead or alive, who would they be? My grandma, my mentor Grace and Dad. If you won $1 million, how would you spend it? I would buy my mum a house, help parents of children that are born premature and save the rest for the kids. Maybe a long holiday too.

DATE NIGHT Need to inject the spark back into your relationship? Just start with date night!

My Weekly Preview chats to those in the know about keeping the love alive.

M

y aunt and uncle had a weekly Friday lunch date they never missed throughout their long years of their marriage.

They’re now in their late seventies and ill health has intruded, but for decades, they chose a beautiful restaurant every Friday and enjoyed lunch and a glass of wine together. Just the two of them. The ritual saw them through the raising of four children close in age and ensured they never forgot to prioritise their relationship and remember what it was they both fell in love with when they first met.

They didn’t call it a ‘date’ – that’s a relatively modern term and one that has crept into the Australian vernacular from the US. But the idea was this: if you don’t take time out from work, friends, raising children, hobbies and everything else that creeps up and demands your time and attention, it’s all too easy to begin taking your relationship for granted. To think it will just always be there. But relationships don’t work like that. They need tending, like a garden, if they are to stay healthy – to blossom, grow and become even more beautiful.

Sunshine Coast identities Allan and Barbara Pease have been married for 27 years. They have six children and eight grandchildren. Allan travels every month, either around Australia or overseas, and Barbara accompanies him three to four times a year. A regular date night simply

doesn’t work for them. Instead, they have date ‘times’, which could be anything from sitting on the bed chatting and laughing, to going for a walk or out for lunch.

“When we first got together we had date nights,” Barbara says. “Alan organised one date night, then it was mine the next week. It got to be so complicated. I thought, all it’s doing is putting pressure on us. It’s about having that time to connect and be a loving couple again, with no phones,

back. We will never change that, unless we’re going somewhere.”

The key, according to Barbara, is to talk about each other, not the kids.

“We talk about our goals and our dreams,” she says. “It’s all about us. If there’s something relevant about the kids, like something fun we want to do with them when we visit Paris, then we do. But it’s not about the day-to-day grind. It’s our special time to remember we’re a couple.

“A lot of couples go fishing, some people go camping, some people go dancing, some go out for dinner.

“I feel like having to come up with something really special for a date night each week can be really detrimental to a relationship, so we don’t plan dates, but every Sunday when Allan’s around, we walk to Buderim. That’s our time. We don’t take the kids, grandkids or friends. We take the back path to Buderim. We laugh, we talk, we have a coffee in peace and we walk

“We’re business partners as well as parents and this is the one time we can be a couple. If you don’t put yourself first, you keep putting yourself last, then the relationship doesn’t last.”

When we talk about date night, we’re not talking first dates. We’re referring to long-term couples who can all too easily let the romance drift out of their relationships when work demands and kids enter the picture.

In 2016, the Institute for Family Studies in the US conducted a Millennium Cohort Study, surveying 9969 couples to compare how often they went out together as a couple when their child was nine months old, with when they were still together as a couple when their child was aged 11. They found couples who went out monthly were significantly less likely to split up.

Sunshine Coast psychologist and relationships counsellor Suzanne Loubris says there are as many ways to have a successful date night as there are couples – the key is how well it allows you to reconnect as a couple.

“Is it date night or is it connection time?” she asks. “What is appropriately connecting for you as a couple? If you’re just passing each other in the corridor or feeling like your love cup isn’t full, it might need some thinking about what to do to reconnect.

“A lot of couples go fishing, some people go camping, some people go dancing, some go out for dinner. Some couples find it’s extremely connecting to stay home and look after the children – they don’t need date night. That’s what their values are about. We assume that our way of connecting is the only way, but it’s about who are the two individuals in the relationship and they have to work out what’s connecting and disconnecting for them.”

“People do not understand how fragile a relationship is,” says Ms Loubris. “They don’t realise a relationship can be broken.

They assume I’m going to love and honour you forever, through sickness and health for 60 years. It’s completely unrealistic for many people. Once you get into the relationship, people start burping and farting and being messy and flirting with other people. They

“For the woman, know what turns your husband on. If you know he loves it when you wear a pretty dress and have your nails painted, do those things for him. Men are oriented towards the physical appearance.

think, this is just me being myself and I should be able to be myself. They don’t understand a relationship can be destroyed slowly. There’s all these things we do that may be a turn-off and we think our partners should keep loving us through all that stuff.

“Why do we make the assumption the passion will stay through all of that? It’s naïve of us. We need to minimise the behaviours that discourage passion. Be that person your partner fell for and show you are interested in your partner.”

For those couples who do like the idea of a regular date night, Ms Loubris suggests establishing ground rules together.

“The rules for the man would be to treat your wife like a princess. Tell her she looks beautiful. Ask her questions about herself.

Pretend it’s a first date and get to know her.

Ask her, ‘how do you feel about being a mother? What parts of being a mother do

important to your man and let him open the door for you, if that’s what you both enjoy.”

Ultimately, date night is about understanding and appreciating your partner on a deeper level – and them doing the same for you. Barbara and Allan Pease keep a journal where they record all the positive things the other has done for them during the week, and often re-read it before they go on a date.

“We write things like, ‘I just felt so special when you made me breakfast this morning. Thanks for the flower you bought me.’ On the other side of the page there could be a negative, just so things don’t fester in your relationship. You always have to frame it in terms of your own feelings. You could say, ‘there’s just something I knew you didn’t notice but I’d like to tell you I felt left out when you didn’t include me in your conversation at the conference.’ We need to

have a solution so it doesn’t come up again.”

On the surface it seems like Allan and Barbara Pease have the perfect relationship, but Barbara is quick to point out they also have their challenges and sometimes fall into the trap of neglecting the relationship.

“It’s mainly me,” Barbara says. “Allan is really good; he always makes me number one and puts me above anyone else. He’s fantastic in that way. For me, I’m the organiser of our whole world – our business and personal world. He does have to remind me and say, ‘listen, our relationship is number one. I need some Barbara time.’

“It’s gentle, it’s not finger-pointing, it’s not being aggressive. It’s just saying, ‘you’re working too hard, we need to chill and relax’. I think in a relationship if you have someone who is the accelerator, you need someone who is the brake.”

DO’S & DON’TS FOR A SUCCESSFUL DATE NIGHT Do go somewhere new. It’s comforting to go to the same restaurant you always go to so be adventurous and spontaneous.

Don’t look at your phone constantly. This is your time together to connect – put your phones away.

Do try to get out of the house. It’s okay to have a date night at home, but only if you know you won’t be interrupted.

Do get dressed up. It’s easy to become complacent with your appearance when you’re in a long-term relationship. Make a bit of effort!

Do set some ground rules – are you okay with talking about the kids on your date night or would you prefer to focus on each other?

Don’t break your budget – a fancy restaurant occasionally is nice, but if you’re on a budget, go for a coffee date or a sunset beach walk instead.

Don’t invite friends! This goes without saying.

• Make your regular date night a weeknight when it’s easier to get restaurant bookings and there are fewer competing social demands.

• If you’re on a budget, look around for mid-week specials at local restaurants and cafes.

• The Sunshine Coast has plenty of great restaurants and bars. Go to one you’ve never been to and surprise your partner by keeping it a secret.

• Pack a picnic basket and head to a local beach or park.

• Take a walk at dusk and watch the sunset together.

• Have a dessert date – the cost of dinner out regularly can really add up so switch it up for cake and coffee only.

• Go for a drive to the hinterland and explore some local art galleries.

• Visit some of our excellent local bookstores together and choose a book you think your partner would love.

• See some live music or a movie – you don’t always have to be talking to feel you’re connecting.

A stormwater network upgrade in some residential streets of Mooloolaba is set to help alleviate local flooding in an area which can be susceptible during severe weather events. The work, which starts in mid-February, includes new stormwater pipelines between Lawrence Street and Ocean View Avenue. THE HOUSE THE COAST BUILT GETS UNDERWAY More than 30 local businesses have put their hand up to help Wishlist and Ausmar Homes commence work on The House the Coast Built. In late 2018, Ausmar Homes put out the call for help to build a home away from home for families with loved ones receiving life-saving treatment at the Sunshine Coast University Hospital.

The response has been overwhelming and the foundation has been inundated with offers from businesses wanting to donate their time and services to help in any way they can, allowing Wishlist partner, Ausmar Homes, to turn the sod and get construction underway. Wishlist CEO, Lisa Rowe says this important project is only possible because of the generosity of our local community. “The home is going to benefit local families as well as families from outside the region.

A NEW WAY TO HELP TOWNSVILLE FLOOD VICTIMS Sunshine Coast recyclers can now donate their Containers for Change refunds to Townsville flood victims at the Kunda Park Tomra recycling centre. Tomra has announced social good and disaster relief charity, GIVIT, as an emergency donation partner at all 10 of its recycling centres in Ipswich, Brisbane, Toowoomba, Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast.

Locals returning their containers can help provide much-needed aid to those left devastated by the floods simply by choosing the “donate” option and selecting “GIVIT flood appeal” on any of the reverse vending machines.

Throughout 2018, Maroochy RSL made a huge difference to veteran support, community organisations, charities and vital services throughout the Sunshine Coast region and beyond, by donating $1.4 million in funding for their needs. More than 150 community groups and organisations received donations, sponsorship and in-kind support over the past 12 months. Veteran’s welfare services are always the focus, but many community groups also benefited, including local disability services provider Sunshine Butterflies, which was provided $10,000 to assist completion of an activity shed.

HELP THOSE WHO HELP OTHERS Local charity Bloomhill is calling on the community’s support as it faces an uncertain funding future. WORDS: Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane.

T

he Sunshine Coast community has thrown its support behind Bloomhill Cancer Care after the charity voiced its need for urgent financial support.

Close to 4000 people have signed the Save Bloomhill petition, which was launched last week and calls for the State Government to redirect more than $600,000 it owes the Federal Government to Bloomhill in order to assist in the funding of essential nursing staff.

The request is not a new one, with Bloomhill CEO Chris Franck writing to Queensland Minister for Health Dr Steven Mills in November last year, explaining the self-funded charity is not making enough from its 12 Coast op shops and annual fundraising events to continue to cover the growing number of clients it assists at the Buderim centre.

The money requested from the State Government would alleviate the pressure on Bloomhill’s budget by covering nursing services, freeing up the money it raises to pay for

the many other allied health and support services it offers at its Buderim centre.

In a more recent letter to Dr Mills, Mr Franck said Bloomhill’s client base is increasing by 35 to 40 per cent each year as cancer diagnosis rates increase.

“Each of our oncology nurses holds a caseload of over 250 clients at any time. This reality is juxtaposed by Bloomhill facing reduced funding opportunities, being entirely community and self-funded,” he writes.

“If we have no funding alternative by the 15th of February 2019, critical decisions will have to be made regarding service and staff consolidation, forcing a redirection of patients back into the public health-care system, which will cost taxpayers far more than the cost of our services We are therefore in this vulnerable time reaching out to you to respectfully request support in the form of funding of our oncology nurses.”

In the letter, Mr Franck states that Bloomhill care reduces hospital admissions. “If we keep only 10 per cent of our active clients from being admitted to hospital once per year each, we reduce the burden of health for the State Department by more than $500,000 per year,” he says.

An earlier statement from the Queensland Government stated the Federal Government is responsible for “funding primary care” and Member for Fairfax Ted O’Brien has thrown his support behind Bloomhill, calling on the State Government to redirect money it had promised the Federal Government for Sunshine Coast medical school places.

With the funding deadline looming, Mr Franck says he remains cautiously optimistic that a resolution will be found,

but admits the stress has taken a toll on staff.

“Living in such times of uncertainty is very stressful.

Clinical staff are anticipating an embargo to accept any new clients – a horrific thought to have to turn clients away when they are in dire need of support,” he says. “Volunteers continue to express their dismay in funding requests being ignored by both levels of government.”

Mr Franck says he has received many calls from the community expressing shock that no government initiatives to fund Bloomhill have yet been forthcoming, but they have been buoyed by the level of support they have received from Coast residents and local businesses.

SECOND CHANCES Years of bullying and a tragic accident led Stephen Dale to reassess his whole life, and in the process he became an inspiration for others. He tells his story to My Weekly Preview. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw.

F

ebruary is an important milestone for Brisbane’s Stephen Dale. It marks 30 years since he fell 30 metres down a cliff, shattering his body and almost losing his life. He spent eight months in hospital and his brain injuries left him unable to read, write or speak. Now, decades later, he is an author and public speaker who has created a successful and happy life for himself and along the way, learned some valuable life lessons.

Stephen was 21 when the accident happened. A childhood rife with bullying had led him down a selfdestructive path of alcohol and drugs and he was under the influence the day he fell. Left with brain and spinal injuries as well as major organ damage, he lost 45 kilos in hospital and upon his release, embarked on a 10-year self-rehabilitation program, teaching himself to do everything again.

In 2002 he started his company, Smiling Tiger, to teach business people how to overcome professional and personal obstacles and achieve their goals. He also speaks to school students about something he has in intimae understanding of – bullying.

“Anywhere I went at school there was someone waiting for me,” he says. “I’d catch the train home and they’d be waiting at the train station for me. There was no way out.

I started dreaming about it, started developing ulcers. In grade 10 I realised if I drank alcohol with them at lunchtime and amused them by doing dangerous things and taking risks, they wouldn’t hit me. I started a very dangerous lifestyle, seeking to do inappropriate things just to gain acceptance. I thought, the only way I’m going to make friends is if I become a bully myself. It led to me turning inward, fearing everything, hating myself, loathing who I was.

I kept taking the mirror off my bedroom wall because I didn’t want to look at my reflection.”

Having experienced the disastrous effects of bullying himself, Mr Dale has deep concerns about online bullying, which he says has no clear solution.

“My immediate response is to say get off social media, but kids live their lives on social media,” he says. “If you separate yourself from social media, you’re separating yourself from the groups you want to be part of. If you’re

not in touch 24 hours a day with them, they exclude you. It’s a terrible dynamic.

“The issue to me is, who are you spending your social media time with? When people start to creep up and online bullying starts to come through, how quickly do you nip it in the bud? Online bullying tends to be at its worst after 6pm.

Sometimes the phone is the only light in their room, the only voice in their head before they go to sleep.”

It’s not just young people Mr Dale is worried about. It’s all of us. He believes our phone addiction has come to control our lives – he says if you can’t go a day without something, it is controlling you.

“You think, ‘I can hear Facebook calling me’. It’s so deeply

embedded in your brain, it’s now part of you. It’s very insidious as far as I’m concerned. Instead of talking to people and feeling good by looking into other people’s eyes, we’re replacing it with a screen that does not care about us. I’m not saying anything is good or evil. It’s the abuse of it that’s the problem. TV, social media, Netflix – its like alcoholism. An addiction is an addiction. It means you’ve lost control. You are relying on the unreliable.

“It’s like me hiding from the bullies at lunchtime. I was isolated and alone, playing with terrible thoughts and it had such an impact on me. You need to get out and be with friends, not sit on mobile phones. Actually talk to each other. That’s what the brain has evolved to do.”

When Mr Dale speaks, he barely takes a breath. You can sense he’s been to hell and back and is enthusiastic about sharing his insights because if there’s something he has learnt from his ordeal, it’s that helping others leads to genuine happiness. “I was a major parasite before my accident,” he says. “I certainly didn’t contribute. I’ve learned many valuable lessons. Contribution is your balance. Some people might contribute a little bit, but they take an awful lot.

“When was the last time you gave to someone you’ll never see again? True contribution is finding out what the other person needs before you ask what you can give, rather than just giving something that is convenient for you.

“But that by itself doesn’t lead to true happiness. Nothing by itself leads to true happiness. It’s a combination of things.

“People think they deserve so much, but I don’t believe in ‘deserve’. I think the words deserve and fair are words we’ve made up to justify how we live our lives. You’ve got to work for things. You’ve got to earn them. The world didn’t care about me until I started to do something with the knowledge I had to help other people, and that has kept me on the right path.”

CHEERING FOR CONSTANCE

BE A RAY OF SUNSHINE

Sami Muirhead applauds high-profile blogger Constance Hall for her courage in standing up to bullies on behalf of our kids.

Candice Holznagel says victims of the catastrophic north Queensland floods need community support and now is the time to help.

N

othing breaks your heart as much as watching your child be bullied. It is a form of torture to watch your child’s pure heart be broken into a thousand pieces. I would not change my children for the world, but there are some days I would change the world for my children.

This week marks the National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence. It is a day that is growing every year, where students and parents across the country take a stance against bullying and violence.

And we have an unlikely crusader against bullies in our schools. It is Constance Hall: controversial blogger and outspoken businesswoman. And I love this woman with all my heart following a six-minute speech she broadcast on her Facebook page this month.

Please, if you do one thing to become a better person this year, watch her raw and honest account of how she has been trolled and tormented for years. The level of online abuse spewing venom at Constance skyrocketed when it was leaked she would dance in the new series of Dancing With The Stars. The mum of seven children will dance in honour of anyone who has been cyberbullied or picked on in the schoolyard.

“I want to read about her in The Western Australian obituaries,” wrote one horrid human being. “She looks like she needs to be bathed in a flea bath,” typed another gutless bully. “I am surprised her husband

hasn’t hung himself.” The trolls refer to Constance as “fat pig”, “feral” and “it”.

So what was Hall’s response to the tirade of vitriol? “There are children and teenagers having to go school after reading things like this, after being treated like this themselves, who are being bullied,” she says. “This online bullying I get is not just me, it is so many children in our country. It is reported that on average three young people kill themselves a week due to bullying. What I am dancing for is every single one of you,

This time last year, Kate and Tick Everett were in a state of shock after the tragic death of their daughter, Dolly, who took her own life due to cyberbullying in January 2018. Dolly was just 14. And sadly Dolly was not in the minority. So for the sake of our babies, please dance your heart out Constance Hall and shoot those trolls down.

orth Queensland has been declared a disaster zone, and it is heartbreaking. My family and friends – and thousands more – are living with the consequences of what has been labelled one of Australia’s most catastrophic events. The one-in-a-500 year flood event has left devastation in its wake.

At the time of writing, a friend is missing, swept away in the torrent of water flowing from the Burdekin River.

All we can do is pray for this lovable, kind larrikin with who we shared laughter. We pray for his family and close friends, many who have spent days searching the flooded waters with hope in their hearts.

There are lives lost, homes destroyed, more than 300,000 head of cattle dead in the western region of the state. Farmers who faced months of drought have now had any hope of salvation destroyed.

In Townsville, parts of the city look like a bomb site. My former suburb was inundated, water flowing through streets and into houses. Residents’ belongings sit on sidewalks, now nothing more than a pile of damp, muddy mess. I’m told that the photos and vision do not compare to the reality, the heartbreak.

My brother and his wife have spent the past two days cleaning, desperately spraying vinegar in the hope their belongings can be salvaged. Their couches dumped, clothes, shoes, cupboards, my 18-month-old nephew and five-month-old niece’s books

and toys binned with no hope of removing the overwhelming mould.

And, they are the lucky ones.

One heartwarming moment to emerge from the mess is the sense of community spirit. Emergency service workers, Army personnel, business and the community working together to help each other.

That north Queensland spirit and resilience shines. Sitting here, taking in the blue skies and perfect beaches, it could be easy to ignore the grief and pain. But, we are Australians, and when disaster hits, we get in and get the job done.

This week the Federal Government announced it will provide immediate payments of $1 million to each of the affected shires.

“This payment will be for them to use on priorities they deem most urgent – whether that be rate relief for impacted properties, infrastructure, or the disposal of cattle which have perished,” Scott Morrison said.

It’s not much, but it’s something and it is also a timely reminder of the need for the entire community to pull together.

Donating to the Queensland Floods Appeal is one way you can help. Through the appeal you can donate to the Australian Red Cross, The Salvation Army, Vinnies and Uniting Care Community.

Clothes, books, financial contributions – it all helps.

The floodwaters may be receding, but the tears have only just begun.

ALISHA TODD EVOKES THE BEAUTY OF ICELAND Sunshine Coast musician Alicia Todd spent six weeks hitching through Iceland and her new song captures its essence.

merging Sunshine Coast musician Alisha Todd dives deep into the peaceful ambience of Iceland with her single Icelandia.

Described as a dreamy, guitar laden love song, swimming in soaring vocal harmonies that transport the listener, Miss Todd says the tune is the result of six weeks of hitching and camping alone.

“It was ample time to fall in love with that land and this song is a representation of that love… it really is another world,” she says.

Recorded in her hinterland home at Belli Bunya Studios and mixed by Scott French at Lovestreet Studios in Currumbin, the collaboration continues with the stunning lyric video cut by England-based Dylan Isaiah featuring imagery from Norwegian

“I was hitching to the Landmannalaugar four-day hike and was dropped off in an Icelandic desert by a Polish truck driver. The next person to pick me up had to be going where I was going, there was only one destination from there and it happened to be Kenneth who took me there,” she says.

“We were both enthralled with the land… it’s like we were destined to create something together to show how beautiful that FOODIE island is.”

Fresh from supporting Wild Marmalade and Band of Frequencies, Miss Todd’s first single from her forth-coming EP Make Believe is now available on all streaming platforms.

Who’s up for a food challenge? Well, prepare yourself because this is one tough – yet delicious – undertaking. The Bavarian at Sunshine Plaza is offering schnitzel stardom to anyone who can take on The Schnitzelmeister – a one-kilogram, six-stack chicken tower topped with Napoli sauce, ham and cheese. A cowbell announces its arrival and the table practically heaves under the weight of the platter, which also contains four side dishes (don’t miss out on the sauerkraut!). The key is to devour it within an hour to receive it for free. While we didn’t quite do that, we did enjoy the fresh flavours. And, if a giant meal isn’t your thing, perhaps the new range of loaded schnitzels is more your style. They are a flavour bomb!

he phrase was coined by British technology pioneer Kevin Ashton.

This concept can be defined as a network of physical objects – appliances, machines, vehicles and other items – that are embedded with electronics, sensors and software, which connect and exchange data over the internet.

Any physical object can be transformed into an Internet of Things device, if it can be connected to the internet and controlled that way.

The Internet of Things depends on a host of technologies – application programming interfaces, radiofrequency identification tags (RFID), cloud-based platforms and architecture to connect devices to the internet. They help individuals and companies manage device connectivity security, as well as collecting

data, and build and run applications.

Smart devices generate a massive amount of data that needs to be analysed in real time using data management tools, including predictive and data analytical tools. Machine learning and artificial intelligence are also used to add context to data, and trigger actions without human intervention.

The ability to electronically monitor and control things in the physical world has inspired a surge of innovation, and unlocks endless possibilities across a range of industries and applications.

In manufacturing, for example, these technologies completely transform the way products are made. They drive industrial automation, remote monitoring helps predict and prevent equipment failures and – perhaps most importantly – they improve worker safety.

Intelligent transportation systems help move people and cargo all over the world.

Thousands of sensors are used on planes, trains, ships and vehicles to optimise safety, engine performance, and logistics and supply chain management. For example, General Electric’s GEnX jet engine, which powers the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, generates its own service newsfeeds, thereby cutting maintenance time, shortening aircraft turnaround time and

boosting performance over time.

Car manufacturers and technology companies are using the Internet of Things to help drivers in connected cars (or smart cars) avoid accidents, predict maintenance issues, find parking spots (can this function arrive for Christmas shopping in 2019?) and more. The technology is also bringing self driving cars to the market.

Given the potential gains from the Internet of Things, it is not surprising that a number of industrial companies are active in its development. The scale required to compete effectively means these companies tend to be large multinational companies,

whose shares trade overseas.

Networking giant Cisco predicts that the opportunity represented by the Internet of Things will exceed US$14 trillion for companies and industries globally in the next decade.

In summary, change is coming.

NEW BUYERS NEED TO PLAN WELL TO SECURE A LOAN

I

t will become even harder to get a mortgage after the banking royal commission, with lenders to be told to do more to check customers’ living expenses, but a Sunshine Coast industry expert says a successful loan application is as simple as ensuring you are “credit ready.”

Banks have already tightened lending standards during the year-long inquiry and on the back of regulator restrictions, but commissioner Kenneth Hayne QC’s final report is expected to lead to further restrictions in the availability of credit.

Loan applicants have already experienced the impacts of tightened lending, with banks having to do more to verify customers’ income and their actual living expenses, rather than relying on the household expenditure measure (HEM) benchmark in assessing mortgages, as well as car loans and credit card limit increases.

Orchard Financial director Nicky Orchard says being “credit ready” will help Coast families improve their chances of securing a loan for their dream home.

“It’s about reducing your credit cards, paying them out and cancelling them while establishing a good saving history,” she says.

“You can be a high income earner, but if

you are just spending all of that money, it shows the banks you are a spender and not a saver.

“If you are renting, ensure you are not just paying the rent, but also putting money into a savings account that is the equivalent of a home loan repayment so the banks can see you can service that size of a loan.”

Ms Orchard says financial institutions look at a minimum of three months of transaction history when assessing a loan application, so she advises putting a sixmonth action plan into place which you can do by seeking out advice from a mortgage broker or financial advisor or utilising the free budget calculator on moneysmart.gov.au to give you an idea of what your current expenses are.

“You need to set your goals of how you are going to place yourself to make you look attractive to the bank,” she says.

“We want to see that clients are ready for that commitment and the extra expenses of household maintenance, rates and insurance, which is completely different to being that of a renter, where all you are worried about is the rent every week.”

The Real Estate Institute of Queensland (REIQ) welcomes the finalisation of the Royal Commission into the banking and financial services sector and the release of its report, but CEO Antonia Mercorella says it is now important that the government and regulators address the problems identified in the report without causing further damage to the property industry and broader economy.

Wow, did anyone watch Pipeline Volcom Pro? Sunshine coaster Reef Heazlewood made it right through to the final and had the highest single wave score. Sadly, he could not get a decent second wave so ended in third with Jack Robinson killing it and winning the event. It’s worth watching his heats. He scored a near perfect 20/20 heat.

Big jump in the swell this weekend with strong winds, but all roads will lead to Noosa. Alex should have the goods as well.

Hopefully the rain kicks in to help keep it a bit glassy.
