hristmas. I’m afraid it has crept up on me this year. With less than three weeks until the big day, I admit I was feeling a little overwhelmed with all that is left to do – menu planning, present wrapping, carol singing and of course, seeing all the community Christmas lights.

And then it hit me – how blessed am I that the only Christmas stress I have comes from my own need to host the perfect holiday? It was one particular sentence in this week’s cover story that struck me: according to Relationships Australia, Christmas is considered the sixth most stressful life event. How has this day of joy become such a burden?

If you forget to buy Aunt Mary a box of chocolates, it really isn’t the end of the world, is it?

The cheesecake didn’t set? Oh well.

Instead, spare a thought for those people who are without a home or food these holidays. Or for those families working through their first Christmas without a loved one, or for people battling illness.

If those of us who are in a position to help do our little bit – support a family in need, donate to the Salvation Army, buy a gift for the Wishing Tree Appeal – it might just brighten someone else’s Christmas, even a little. And, that’s what it should be about, shouldn’t it?

OUR PLACE Rosemount is a locality with an interesting history. There were a couple of sawmills there until floods caused them to relocate in the 1890s. Rosemount Provisional School (Rosemount State School) opened in April 1886 and in 1911 a new school building was erected on Petrie Creek Road. Not far away a public hall was built in 1922 and for the next 40 years this was where locals gathered for meetings, dances, church gatherings.

STAY SANE THIS SILLY SEASON

With less than three weeks until Christmas, you might be starting to feel the pressure of the big day. And you’re not alone. So how do you survive the silly season? My Weekly Preview asks a few locals for help. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw.

C

hristmas can be a wonderful day of joy and celebration that brings family and friends together to celebrate, spread peace and love, eat delicious food and open wonderful gifts.

But it can also be the exact opposite. A time of great stress, when unresolved family tensions explode, budgets blow out and the pressure to make everything just perfect becomes overwhelming.

It’s not surprising Relationships Australia identifies the Christmas period as the most likely time of year for people to experience anxiety and depression. In its December 2016 online Christmas survey, it found Christmas is considered one of the six most stressful life events, along with divorce, moving house and changing jobs.

In one survey of more than 3000 people, 86 per cent reported they find buying presents to be difficult and 65 per cent reported Christmas shopping to be stressful.

A US survey found 45 per cent of Americans dread the festive season.

Sunshine Coast psychologist Suzanne Loubris says lowering your expectations and maintaining a sense of humour are your best tools for surviving Christmas.

“Number one: don’t be disappointed if people behave badly, and don’t expect they will behave well and you won’t be surprised by anything,” she says. “Humour is always a good way to get around anything. Have your sense of humour firmly in place. Be helpful,

wash the dishes, clean up, listen to people without the need to express your opinions, keep things agreeable. Mostly, try and stay detached from what other people say. If someone says something rude, just smile and think, it’s just for today. Tomorrow is a different day.”

Ms Loubris says people get caught up in unrealistic ideas of how Christmas should pan out and family members often have competing expectations.

“When people drink too much, all the latent resentments come out. We don’t talk to each other all year because we don’t really like each other and now we’re going to sit around the table together and play happy families. Be mindful of that and be prepared for war rather than goodwill and cheer. Tell yourself, I can keep smiling for these three or four hours, then walk away.”

“If you have blended families or you’re going to the in-laws, remember everyone does it differently and cooks food in different ways. As long as you’re expecting things should be done your way, you’re going to find yourself disappointed and frustrated.”

When it comes to alcohol, she says have a glass of wine or a beer and put your feet up, but don’t have too much.

“If it’s not for mums, Christmas just doesn’t happen and that pressure kills you,” she says. “It kills me every year.”

Allen uses the Raiz app, which rounds up purchases you make on cards throughout the year and saves the money. This money funds her Christmas and an end-of-year family holiday. She also suggests buying a $5 or $10 gift card every time you do a shop, as well as buying non-perishable Christmas food like pudding, nibbles, chocolate-coated nuts and almonds well before the big day.

“I add one or two of those things every time I do a shop and put it in a cupboard,” she says. “I do my big Christmas gift shop online because I don’t like fighting people for a car park. With Christmas gifts, I get my boys to write a list. I set up alerts on all the cheap websites like catch.com.au, so when an item comes on sale, I grab it.

“I do a load of cooking before Christmas and give lots of gifts of food,” she says. “I make rum balls, honeycomb, peanut brittle and nuts and bolts [a spicy Nutri-Grain mix] for neighbours and the boys’ teachers. It’s all cheap and easy to make. I always like giving gifts of food because it doesn’t cost much and it’s really from the heart.

“My dad loves cheese sticks – the really hot ones. It costs about $4 to buy all the ingredients and he loves it. I like the thought of carrying on family traditions and there’s so much commercialisation, so it’s nice to make something by hand.”

COVER STORY and the other side of the family for Boxing Day. “I never book more than one thing per day,” she says. “Our kids are 10 and 11 and this allows them time to play with their new things on Christmas morning.”

Mrs Allen puts a cap of $200 on food for the big Christmas celebration and favours fancy salads and cold meats with a jug of gravy heated up in the microwave.

“Salads are so beautiful, delicious and healthy and really fun to make. I’m not a big one for the traditional Christmas dinner.

We’ve never eaten a turkey in our lives. We like to do a really nice barbecue with fancy nibbles and a cold Christmas dessert. It’s not a time to do garden salad. You should be having pumpkin and blue cheese, balsamic roasted veggies, all done cold with parmesan cheese. A fancy salad goes a long way.”

Mrs Allen doesn’t drink alcohol but loves making Christmas punch with cold tea and loads of fruit, which the kids love.

When it comes to gifts, she buys one big present, like a trampoline, for the whole family. Then the children get something they want, something they need, something to wear and something to read.

“I’m a bit naughty. I always say I’m going to budget $200 a child and I always blow it. I end up spending $500. I’m terrible. It’s the sort of thing all mums fall into. You see something that would make their day so special. I spoil my kids rotten, like anyone.

Kids are made to be spoilt, so why not? Go nuts – it’s only once a year.”

Having said that, she never buys gifts for adults in the extended family and the kids under 12 get one gift with a $20 limit.

“I don’t think grown-ups need presents,” she says. “You buy your significant other a present but I think adult presents are a ridiculous idea.”

When Christmas Day dawns, Mrs Allen focuses on keeping things relaxed.

“We make a point of not travelling too far,” she says. “We just want Christmas Day to be relaxing, not this big anxious day. We watch a Christmas movie, look at the local Christmas lights. We just make sure our immediate family is doing something together and something relaxing.”

TODD & SAMI’S 7-STEP CHRISTMAS SURVIVAL GUIDE STEP 1: Sami: The first step to the perfect Christmas is, of course, to have a colour theme and a clear image in your head of how your home is going to look to celebrate the festive season. I put up our tree in mid-November to try to get at least six weeks of all its glory. I mean, I am nothing if not a joiner of the festive season.

This year our house is covered in rose gold and pale pink baubles, tinsel and decorations.

The rule is less is not more: don’t hold back from matching your dinner plates to the wreaths hanging in the loo.

Toddy: I think of Christmas as a marathon not a sprint, so we need to ease our way into it. As far as putting the decorations up, well it’s never too early if you still haven’t taken them down from last year. Don’t be ashamed to leave the outside lights up all year round. The Christmas lights soon become the lights of the New Year and then Straya Day lights, Valentine’s lights, the lights of Saint Paddy’s Day and… Well, you get the picture. By the time you’re dining out on the lights of footy finals in September, you’re on the downhill stretch to Christmas again.

STEP 2: Sami: Have a signature cocktail to welcome

Toddy: Ace idea to have a fridge full of frothy cold ones and some bubbles. Social lubrication is a must when catching up with annoying relos you haven’t seen all year. Don’t though, whatever you do, use Bundy Rum in the rum balls or you’ll find the angry juice kicking in around lunchtime and you’ll have a literal ‘relly bash’ with Uncle Mervyn and cousin Damien rock ‘n’ roll wrestling late into the arvie on the front lawn.

STEP 3:

Toddy: Don’t waste your hard-earned buying emergency presents just to save the embarrassment ‘in case’ rellies or friends drop in unannounced. Seriously, DO NOT JUST DROP IN. Unless you’re okay with nudity.

STEP 6:

Sami: Matching pyjamas.

Sami: Crank the Christmas carols. You Nothing screams ‘festive season’ can never have too many Christmas the way matching pyjamas carols on high rotation in the house.

STEP 4: Sami: Don’t forget to leave Santa his treats on Christmas Eve. We leave a few carrots and may leave him a pink gin to get him through the long night this year.

Toddy: Unless you’re dealing with Hipster Santa, there’s no need to leave out a coconut

Toddy: Sure, bon bons are fun on the big day, the tissue paper crowns are awesome – especially when they get stuck to your forehead with sweat – but for fun in the lead-up to December 25, make sure you wrap up a few empty boxes so that when the kids misbehave or fight with each other, you can throw one in the fire.

A local teenager plans to take on Buderim hill for his favourite charity. WORDS: Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane.

Josh Paix is a regular in the Buderim 9 Challenge the other 300 or so cyclists. It is an annual tradition he has enjoyed since the event’s inception in 2010.

“To have a mobility scooter like mine costs about $10,000 and it would not be possible without the support of government funding and the support of my parents,” he says.

“My scooter will happily do around four hills and I help some riders up the hill as well. They hang onto my chair as they get a breather. Going up the hills I can stay with

a few of the riders, but going down the hills they zoom past me like an aeroplane.

“I appreciate their support as I ride with them. The atmosphere at the finish line is amazing with lots and lots of people cheering you on. My face gets sore from smiling.”

When asked what his secret is to gaining the top fundraising spot, Mr Paix says it’s finding a combination of friends and family as well as local businesses who are willing to support his desire to give back.

“I would like the Buderim public to come along and watch part of the course to get out and support the efforts of the riders climbing nine of Buderim’s most picturesque hills. It’s a challenge, not a race and I hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable day,’’ he says.

CPL Sunshine Coast manager Georgina Quin-Conroy says they hope to beat last year’s event tally of $24,000 to support children and families on the Sunshine Coast with cerebral palsy.

osh Paix may not be able to ride a bicycle, but that hasn’t stopped the Nambour teen from becoming a force to be reckoned with in one of the toughest cycling events in the region – the Buderim 9 Challenge.

The 18-year-old has become the only person to achieve two consecutive years as the highest fundraiser for the physical challenge where cyclists set out to conquer nine of Buderim’s tallest hills over a 76-kilometre track in less than three hours.

And, Mr Paix is determined to secure the title once again this year.

Growing up with cerebral palsy, he knows how important the work of Buderim 9’s beneficiary Choice Passion Life (CPL) disability support services is for local families.

“CPL has been very supportive over the years both guiding and supporting in my treatments and physio and the numerous hours of fundraising they had to do before the Buderim 9 came along,” he says.

“While it’s anybody’s guess who the biggest fundraiser will be, as there are so many people fundraising, I would love my name to be on [the perpetual trophy] three times.”

Sunshine Coast residents are being urged to thoroughly check the plug, leads and lamp holders of any decorative lights they plan to use this festive season.

This reminder comes after a Cooroy man suffered an electric shock from potentially deadly 240-volt wires that were exposed in newly purchased Christmas lights he had ordered over the internet. The faulty wiring could have resulted in a house fire.

WorkCover Queensland (WQ) is reminding people to check that the lights they have on their tree or hanging up around the home meet Australian standards.

For those looking to buy new lights, WQ advises looking for the regulatory compliance mark logo and approval number, which are on the packaging, on a plastic tag near the plug or on the transformer body if it is a low-voltage type. WQ warns against buying lights online, particularly from overseas.

Safety tips: • Use power boards fitted with overload protection.

• Avoid double adaptors or piggyback plugs.

• Use factory-made extension leads or those made by a licensed electrical contractor.

• Check lighting and all leads for damage.

• Always unwind extension leads to avoid possible overheating.

• Use extra-low voltage outside, such as LED or solar lights.

A REVAMPED EVENTS CENTRE IS IN THE WORKS The Events Centre at Caloundra is in the midst of a $6-million redevelopment, with the most significant stage of work due to start later this month. Co-funded by Sunshine Coast Council and the Federal Government through the Building Better Regions Fund, the plans include an upgraded theatre, covered deck area, function room and covered Gary Mears, GM with Cr Tim Dwyer entrance. To ensure the redevelopment is completed quickly, the centre will close for four months, reopening in April 2019.

The Events Centre chairman and councillor Tim Dwyer says the upgrade includes internal and external improvements that will provide better access, comfort, acoustics and visitor services.

A group of 20 local kids from grades three to eight are preparing to rock out after three months of private tutoring and mentoring from some of the region’s best musos for the annual Eumundi School of Rock concert. Founder Katie Noonan (pictured) will also perform alongside two bands the kids have formed and Melbourne three-piece Dallas Frasca. The kids rehearse with their teachers every Wednesday afternoon at Eumundi State School and will show off their new skills at the concert on December 14 from 6pm at the Eumundi School of Arts. EUMUNDI SCHOOL OF ROCK READY TO ROLL

A principal architect for the Sunshine Coast City Hall project will be engaged this month. Sunshine Coast Council’s group executive business performance Jeanette Allom-Hill says the City Hall building, which will be located in the Maroochydore City Centre, will establish a benchmark for future development. After the principal architect is appointed, a design consultancy team will be selected. Construction is expected to start in late 2019, following a tender process and the council intends to occupy 75 per cent of the new building’s floor space and provide working space for up to 600 staff, including those already located at Maroochydore.

CHRISTMAS CONCERT The Sunshine Coast Concert Band will host a Christmas concert under music director Ken Chadwick. It will feature the Coastal Caring Clowns, a wide variety of music and talented vocalists. STADIUM SET TO EXPAND USC Stadium is set to welcome larger crowds than ever before, with the University of the Sunshine Coast and Sunshine Coast Lightning announcing the start of work on a new-look sporting and community facility. USC Vice-Chancellor Professor Greg Hill says the redevelopment, which is being funded by the Queensland Government, is expected to take six months and will increase the stadium’s seating capacity by 50 per cent, expanding from 2000 seats to about 3000. The extension also includes new athlete changerooms, a multi-purpose function room, dedicated seating for people with a disability, a new sound system and new public bathrooms.

The Daniel Morcombe Foundation has produced the Keeping Kids Safe Program for Scouts to support young people to develop personal safety skills and have the ability to Recognise, React and Report when they feel unsafe. Developing an understanding of respectful relationships is also a key learning area within the program. This aligns nicely with the Scouts Queensland Child Safe Scouting Policy. The Mount Cotton Scout Group are the first to have completed the program and have been presented with their Keeping Kids Safe badges. The program is based on five half-hour sessions.

TOP AUSTRALIAN CYCLISTS JOIN STUDENTS ON BIKE RIDE Stockland has unveiled an exclusive partnership with the Australian Cycling Academy that will see world-class riders helping to teach cycle safety to Aura residents.

The partnership will also help to achieve Stockland’s vision for Aura to become a national cycle city showcase with infrastructure that encourages residents to get on their bikes as an alternative to car travel. Children from Baringa State Primary School joined professional riders from the Australian Cycling Academy last week on a ride along one of Aura’s dedicated veloways to launch the partnership. The riders will also make further community visits to Aura, train on its roads and veloways and take part in future cycling events in the community.

TAURUA NAMED QLD COACH OF THE YEAR Sunshine Coast Lightning Head Coach Noeline Taurua has taken out a prestigious accolade at the Queensland Sport Awards, winning Queensland Sport Coach of the Year. Ms Taurua led the Lightning to back-to-back premierships in 2017 and 2018.

Ms Taurua says she is humbled to be recognised for her contribution to the club throughout 2018.

This is the 17th year the group has hosted the event and Bloomhill CEO Chris Franck says this generosity will ensure that many additional services and therapies will be provided for more than 400 clients, their families and carers. The event continues to be supported by many prominent sponsors and is well supported by motorbike riders and their pillion passengers who all dress in pink, with many donning pink bras on the outside too, and decorate their bikes for the ride which sets off from the Yandina Bowls Club and does a circuit through the hinterland.

SAVING PUMICESTONE PASSAGE SHORELINE The Caloundra Power Boat Club is supporting its Pumicestone Passage foreshore neighbour at Golden Beach, TS Onslow Naval Cadet base, to protect the shoreline near its base by donating $2500 to Stage 2 of the TS Onslow Shoreline Management Project. The funds were presented by Joe Keates, vice president of the Caloundra Power Boat Club at TS Onslow recently. Take Action on Pumicestone Passage (TAPP) president Ken Mewburn says Stage 1 of the project has seen the successful installation of soft engineering structures, including mangroves, to stabilise the first section of eroding shoreline.

HP Billiton has announced an off-market share buyback of $7.3 billion. As the recent RIO buyback demonstrated, depending on your tax status, the after-tax return from participating in the off-market buyback may be greater than the return from a sale of shares on market.

The final buyback price will consist of a capital component of $0.38 per share and the balance will be a fully franked dividend.

Based on the current price of BHP, one could estimate a possible final outcome as follows: The BHP current price at time of writing is $30.77. The buyback price based on an anticipated 14 per cent discount is $26.46 (which is comprised of capital – $0.38, dividend – $26.08). With franking of $11.17 this gives total buyback proceeds of $37.63.

Compared with the current price, this gives a potential profit of $6.86 or 22.3 per cent.

Buybacks are always scaled back, so unless you end up with a small holding of less than 30 shares, 100 per cent of your holding will not be taken.

Buybacks are not for everyone. On the positive side, they are profitable for those who don’t pay any tax such as low income earners or pension funds. We generally don’t recommend them in accumulation super, or for shareholders who pay tax at marginal rates. If the price of BHP stayed steady post buyback, you could repurchase the shares on market and lock in a short-term profit of around 17 per cent.

On the negative side, the franking credit refund will not arrive until your tax return is lodged for next year. Also, a profit is not guaranteed. There is always the possibility that the BHP share price could rally strongly between the time when the buyback price is set and when you receive the proceeds. If the intention is to buy back into BHP to recover the shares that have been accepted in the offer, you could possibly pay more than the $37.63 price used in the example above.

FOOD FOR LIFE Morag Gamble is on a mission to improve the lives of people in Uganda, and she’s taking the next generation with her. WORDS: Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane.

E

ver since they were born, Maia and Hugh Raymond have been soaking up every ounce of knowledge bestowed on them by their mum Morag Gamble, an internationally renowned permaculturalist.

Having grown up in a permaculture village on the Sunshine Coast, Ms Gamble says her children have helped to start school garden programs and have assisted her with teaching different education programs and workshops for other kids.

Now aged 12 and 10 respectively, the Crystal Waters youngsters are set to accompany Ms Gamble to Africa on December 5, where they will spend time co-designing a sustainable food garden for The African Children’s Choir Primary School. They will work in a school garden demonstration centre that feeds more than 300 orphans daily and take laptops and permaculture books to resource the permaculture education centre in Uganda.

Maia and Hugh will also be students in their mother’s permaculture design course for teachers, farmers, activists and community workers. They will also support Ms Gamble when she offers an introduction to permaculture program with a women’s self-help group in Kenya and meet with the Ugandan minister of education to seek support for the development of permaculture curriculum and gardens for primary schools throughout the country.

This is all being done through Ms Gamble’s social enterprise, the Permaculture Education Institute.

This will not be Maia and Hugh’s first foray overseas. They accompanied Ms Gamble and their father Evan Raymond to

“They are young permaculture leaders,” Ms Gamble says proudly. “By being involved in these programs, they see the importance in helping people to address things like clean water, clean food and generating

opportunities for livelihood on small pieces of land.

“In Uganda, one in five children are stunted because of malnutrition and 70,000 children drop out of school each year because there is not enough food. Introducing sustainable food garden programs in schools and supporting the local initiatives that are already operating there will give them strength to ripple out across the country and make a difference to so many children’s lives, while helping families to get ahead.”

Ms Gamble has been fundraising and hopes to be able to take over $10,000 to distribute to the various organisations she will be working with. The money will go directly to the projects they are working on.

Despite the prevalence of poverty and hunger in Uganda, Ms Gamble says there are a lot of people who are looking for ways to move towards a future free from violence and desperation. “From the conversations I’ve been having, there’s significant impact already being seen on farming culture due to climate change and this is the main source of income and livelihood in Uganda,” she says.

“My role on this trip is to mentor those young teachers, because we want to overcome the whole colonisation thing and instead be supportive of what it is they are seeking to do.

“There is a real drive for them to get back to the traditional way of being on the land.”

IN HER WORDS Di Morrissey is one busy lady. On the heels of her 26th novel, the author chats to My Weekly Preview about the inspiration behind her latest work and the publishing career that she just can’t leave behind. WORDS: Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane.

D

i Morrissey recalls how it felt like “jumping off a cliff” when she made the decision to leave Australian television and the role on Good Morning Australia she had occupied for eight years to stay at home and write books.

Little did she know at the time, but that leap of faith was the start of a career that would see her become one of Australia’s most successful authors.

Speaking with My Weekly Preview following the release of her 26th novel, Arcadia, Ms Morrissey says you could not have imagined a worse time for her to have a dramatic career change than in 1989 when she was almost 40.

“I felt that I’d had the best years [on Good Morning Australia] and things weren’t as fresh and exciting as when I first started,” she says. “But I was on my own, I was divorced, the kids were in college and I had no money. I decided to go for it and I rented a cottage in Byron Bay and wrote. A year later, I had my first book.

“I don’t think I felt that gob-smacking moment until the book arrived in the post. I opened the box in the Byron Bay post office, stood it up on the counter and everybody looked at it and I cried.”

The raw emotion of that moment has been the driving force for Ms Morrissey to create engaging tale after tale.

She says it is the settings of the book that come to her before the storyline unfolds in her creative process and although she has visited Tasmania a few times, it wasn’t until she started to think about climate change, land clearing and other environmental elements that the island seemed the perfect backdrop for her latest novel.

“I am a big admirer of [environmentalist] Bob Brown and I thought I’d just go down there and look. It’s funny how when you put it out into the ether and you say it out loud, things start to manifest and I began to learn amazing things.”

Ms Morrissey admits she is “obsessed with trees” and was intrigued by king’s holly, the oldest plant in the world. It is thought to be 43,000 years old and one small cluster is growing in a secret Tasmanian location.

“All these elements create a sense of mystery and when I went [to Tasmania] last year in September, I experienced an

incredibly brooding winter and it was very evocative. I went up the Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers National Park and saw dripping forests with dark dropping hills towering over the river and the rapids. It was an extraordinary setting,” she says.

Arcadia evolved into a contemporary novel about two young women in their thirties who were childhood friends that reunite and set off on a road trip around Tasmania, but it becomes a sinister journey for both of them.

Even before Arcadia had returned from the printers, Ms Morrissey had already begun exploring the basis of her next novel. Making that mental switch the day after the final

proofread goes off to the editor has allowed Ms Morrissey not to remain attached to the characters she has already brought to life – a hazard she found in her early years of writing books.

“You live with these people seven days a week for seven months and you think about them and breathe every moment with them, so I have to give myself a psychological turning-off point so I can move forward,” she says.

There is no doubt Ms Morrissey has firmly placed her stamp on the literary world. The Underwood typewriter her grandfather taught her to type on is now on display in a museum near her Manning Valley home in New South Wales.

Ms Morrissey is a passionate ambassador for the Royal Institute for Deaf and Blind Children and established the Golden Land Education Foundation to raise funds for a school she set up outside Mandalay in Myanmar.

While she loves spending time in the garden on her two-acre property, cooking and making marmalade, she does not have much spare time since she launched The Manning Community News, which distributes 8000 print copies and has an online edition.

The foundations of her career were built on print journalism – Ms Morrissey’s first job was as a copy girl and then cadet at The Australian Women’s Weekly. She went on to work for Northcliffe Newspapers on London’s Fleet Street for several years and says even during her days on Australia’s first ever current affairs breakfast show, she continued to write.

Ms Morrissey says she was driven to start up the new monthly publication in her home town because she became increasingly dissatisfied with the reporting in the existing local newspaper.

“I didn’t feel like the community had a big enough voice, so I started an independent publication to represent the community and it’s gone gangbusters,” she says.

While she has some volunteer contributors, Ms Morrissey does the bulk of the work writing, editing and publishing the newspaper each month.

“Once you’re a journalist you never stop being a journalist.

Those skills helped me enormously with interviewing and researching for my novels and this is why I go to each place I write about; I couldn’t imagine just making it up,” she says.

TOURISM WRAP FOR 2018

Sami Muirhead has some great tips for keeping the kids entertained over the Christmas holidays – without spending a fortune.

Simon Latchford reflects on the past year in tourism on the Sunshine Coast and highlights future challenges and opportunities.

S

chool is nearly out for most of the students on the Coast. My brood is tired and emotional. So am I in fact. It is a time of year filled with tears and laughter and parties and goodbyes to special teachers and friends and lots of different feelings for both big and little people.

We all need a recharge and I am here to hopefully inspire you with some free ideas to keep the monkeys entertained.

Tip number one is to use the local libraries. Our libraries have so many free workshops and courses and resources inside their walls it is mind-boggling. Gone are the days of quiet places where you had to walk around in silence. Libraries are funky hubs of communication with cutting-edge technology that kids of all ages absolutely love.

Tip two is to make a treasure hunt and visit each of the 10 ‘Story Seats’ in the region if you have little kids. Each location is in one of the best parks in the region and has a beautiful bench with the name of one of 10 children’s book on it and is designed for you to sit with your family and read and sing and play games. While in town, why not check out each of the locations stretching from Currimundi to Kenilworth and up the Range. It is a great way to see our backyard.

Tip three is to check out the council’s art programs. These classes are world-class and just beautiful and suit most ages. Head

to the council’s website and look for the ‘kids’ tab to find out more.

Tip four is all about lights, camera and action down on the sand at Mooloolaba as the Summer Beach Movie Series continues.

We are all invited by the council to enjoy free movies under the stars. I have a date with Hugh Jackman on January 5 with The Greatest Showman screening.

Tip five is to just soak up nature and turn off our devices. Sounds easier than it is. We have waterfalls, mountain ranges, rivers, beaches and lakes that are all breathtakingly beautiful and will replenish and restore the soul after a busy year of school and sports.

Tip six is to hit the shopping centres as many of them have free school holiday activities. This one can be tricky if you are trying to not spend money, but the air conditioning is an added bonus.

Tip seven is to listen to the local radio stations and find out if they are broadcasting at a location. I am not telling you this because I work at Mix FM (although I do like it if people visit because it keeps me in a job), but I tell you because there are often free face painters/jumping castles/prizes/balloon artists/drinks and other goodies on offer. And most radio stations put on a free sausage sizzle.

And you know what? My radio station is still serving sausages on bread with onion on top. Perhaps this is the greatest Christmas gift of all. You are welcome.

he big jolly red man is set to plummet from the skies above Peregian Beach in an entrance fit for a rockstar.

When you consider he has been making an appearance at the Peregian Beach Christmas Carols for more than half a century, it’s no wonder he is ready to take things to the next level.

The December 11 event holds the title of the longest-standing carols on the Sunshine Coast and the 2018 carols are proudly presented by East Coast Originals, a local not-for-profit organisation that organises the monthly music Peregian Originals series.

While skydiving Santa and his aerial elves will be a hit for when they arrive around 6pm, local artists Pete Allan Collective and Alisha Todd will perform carols, along with a couple of their own original tracks.

Special performances by the Suncoast Calisthenics, Sambazzy Carnivale Troop, Hula Hoopers and Circus Tribe with roving Christmas Angels will ensure an ongoing feast for the eyes and ears.

A plethora of food trucks to suit all tastes,

a sausage sizzle by Surfrider Foundation, face painting, temporary tattoos, glow sticks and candles will also be available.

The evening will conclude by 9pm with a fireworks display over Peregian Beach.

Entry to the 54th Peregian Beach Christmas Carols is by gold coin donation, with all proceeds going to the East Coast Originals for the facilitation of the carols event and to provide support for ongoing Originals events in 2019.

fter 40, you become quite nostalgic.

These days, things are just too hectic. I mean, when we were kids, you’d go down to your local deli with one dollar and come home with three packets of Samboys, two Mars Bars, a Bubble O’ Bill, some Hubba Bubba, a half dozen Redskins and a can of Passiona. Nowadays, they’ve got cameras everywhere.

With the end of the year approaching, I thought we’d take a trip down memory lane and share some things I’ve learnt in 2018.

If someone says, “Yeah, that’s hilarious” after something you said, they weren’t really listening in the first place.

When you’re watching Netflix, ‘just one more episode’ actually means six more.

The hair growing out of my ears and my nostrils is just like Obi Wan Kenobi from Star Wars. The more I strike it down the more

powerful it becomes.

It doesn’t really matter if your glass is half-empty or half-full, so long as you drink it through a crazy straw.

Vodka mixes well with everything. Except good decisions.

You should never trust a man wearing more than zero necklaces.

Relationships are hard. Kebabs are soft and tasty. Choose kebabs.

If you vague out in a conversation and have no idea what’s going on, simply smile and say “Yeah, that’s hilarious”.

This week’s beer comes from the champions down the road, Brisbane’s Newstead Brewing Co. These guys have had a cracking year. Just in time for summer comes the Newstead Nineteen 09 Coastal Ale, a nod to our life savers.

It’s as refreshing as you can get, with mandarin aromas, subtle citrusy hops flavours and a light-bodied crisp and slightly bitter finish. It’s the perfect thirst quencher after a day at the beach. The other outstanding thing, as usual with Newstead, they’re giving back to our community and all proceeds from sales go towards supporting our volunteer Surf Life Savers.

The popular train will mark a major milestone with a record number of train journeys scheduled for December, as strong demand from visitors builds.

The heritage railway experience will run 34 services in December, a 30 per cent increase from its regular timetable of the 26 services spread across Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays.

Mary Valley Rattler chairman Ian McNicol says he is thrilled with the way Queenslanders have embraced the return of the Rattler since the train revived its timetable in October.

We have planned some very special trips to celebrate Christmas,” he says.

“There will be a special Christmas service… with two additional charter services to run for private functions. We expect the Christmas trains, and the Boxing Day steam service, to sell out quickly so encourage passengers to book early.

PAUL TAYLOR’S SECRET BBQ RECIPE Nine News Regional anchor Paul Taylor knows a thing or two about how to throw together the perfect summer meal. And while he admits this isn’t the kind of recipe that includes specific measurements and techniques, he offers the following recipes as “more of a guide to help you create some exciting barbecue meals over the amazing Queensland summer”.

BARBECUE PRAWN SKEWERS

MANGO SALAD

Marinating any meat is a great way to add flavour. A personal favourite is marinating prawns shell on or off (or chicken) in soy, crushed garlic, ginger and lemongrass, finely cut chilli (up to you what chilli you use and if you keep the seeds in) and a splash of fish sauce. Be as liberal or sparing as you like.

I tend to leave this to marinate overnight if I have time, but just before you chuck them on the barbie works, too. Throw your prawns on skewers to keep the slippery suckers together – it’s easier to flip them this way too.

If you’re really getting fancy, grill up wedges of lime either on the skewers or straight on the barbecue. Grilling citrus creates an amazing sweetness, plus, when the juice drips down and creates steam, the meat is infused with more citrus flavour.

The prawns only need a few minutes either side for a perfect, tender and juicy result. Ready to eat straight off the barbecue with the squeezed grilled lime on top.

You can’t go past a Bowen mango, especially in my family where there seems to be an unspoken rule to eat as many as you possibly can over summer.

Mango salad is a quick and easy addition to any meal, especially at barbecues, where healthy options may be few over the silly season.

My mango salad recipe is easy – grab just about any vegetable you have in the fridge, cut it up to your liking and chuck (or place neatly depending on the type of person you are) onto a serving plate.

I like cos or iceberg lettuce, cherry tomatoes, cucumber, avocado, capsicum, slices of radish and red onion.

My secret ingredient – mango – can be added fresh, or if you’re looking for something to wow your guests, pop slices on the barbecue to char for a few minutes. You should still be able to taste sweet, juicy fruit but like the lime, the mango develops an even sweeter and smokier flavour.

Eat salad and prawns together for the ultimate Queensland-style barbecue that everyone from your fussy niece to your great uncle will love.

NDIS TO ROLL OUT ON THE SUNSHINE COAST The National Insurance Disability Scheme will change the lives of thousands of locals, and the groups and businesses that support them.

S

unshine Coast residents living with disabilities and their families are eagerly awaiting the start of 2019 more than most. As of January 1, the $22-billion National Insurance Disability Scheme (NDIS) will become available in the local government areas of Sunshine Coast, Noosa and Gympie, leading to a greater quality of life for thousands of people.

The NDIS is designed to support people with a disability to achieve their goals, helping them to realise their full potential, participate in and contribute to society and exercise choice and control over their lives and futures.

Whether it is assistance to live independently at home, transport to access daily activities, assistive technology, home modifications, vehicle modifications or help finding and keeping a job, there’s a long list of support services available under the NDIS. The NDIS is expected to support around 91,000 people in Queensland, including an estimated 7500 in the Sunshine Coast region.

The level of annual expenditure in Queensland is expected to more than double to $4.3 billion, and create up to 35,000 new

jobs in disability services across the state.

As at September 30, the number of people (including children) accessing NDIS supports in Queensland is 25,564. Of this number, about 27 per cent are receiving supports for the first time.

There are 17,925 providers registered to deliver NDIS supports nationwide, with 4110 in Queensland. The number of registered

providers in Queensland at the end of September represents a 16 per cent growth on the previous quarter.

Central to the NDIS is a shift to directing funding and resources to NDIS participants who will then drive and shape the market through their individual choices. This fundamentally changes the funding relationships that have characterised the disability support system in the past.

It’s not only those with a disability who will benefit from the NDIS. It also opens up new employment opportunities for service providers and their staff.

The NDIS market will expand dramatically in coming years, creating significant opportunities for the existing service sector and for new entrants, including sole traders.

The latest quarterly data for the NDIS shows that 93 per cent of participants now rate their experience as ‘very good’ or ‘good’ – the highest level since the trial phase.

The NDIS will continue to implement a range of improvements to enhance the experience participants and providers have with the NDIS.

The NDIS Participant Employment Taskforce will work with NDIS participant representatives, employment service providers and related organisations. It will include representatives from the Department of Social Services (DSS) and the NDIA. Minister for Families and Social Services, Paul Fletcher, and Assistant Minister for Social Services, Housing and Disability Services, Sarah Henderson, made the announcement at the National Disability Services CEO Forum in Melbourne. “Despite their enthusiasm, commitment and good reputation as employees, people with disability too often find it hard to get into the workforce,� Mr Fletcher says.

Ms Henderson says overall employment of NDIS participants has remained consistent at 22 per cent. “The NDIS is designed to provide reasonable and necessary supports to people with significant and permanent disability to support them to choose and

achieve their goals in their communities and workplaces. “We know that having a job brings greater economic independence, and significant social and emotional benefits.�

Mr Fletcher says the taskforce will look at how participants in the NDIS are best supported to seek employment, through the NDIS and through existing services such as Disability Employment Services. “It will make sure employment is prioritised in the NDIS planning and plan review process. It will improve employment supports in participant plans, including greater use of existing employment services,� he says. “Other responsibilities include finalising pricing for employment supports under the NDIS to include supported employment, aligning with the government’s broader jobs agenda. “It will be charged with improving communication on employment of NDIS participants and finalising a NDIS participant employment strategy.�

During this critical first step your provider will help you start to think about what is important to you, what supports you currently have in place and what supports you may need in the future. It is important to think about the things that are important to you, and all your needs and goals prior to your NDIS meeting.

STEP 2 Meeting with the NDIA You will be contacted by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) to set up a planning meeting. To create your first plan you will meet with an NDIS planner or local area coordinator to have a conversation about your current situation and supports.

STEP 3 Starting your plan Once your plan is approved, it is time to action it. There are supports available to help you implement and monitor your plan. This is called support coordination.

Your coordinator will link you with service providers in your area, address any barriers to accessing services and build your capacity to gain more independence.

STEP 4 Turning your plan into action Your coordinator will take the time to get to know you, and identify the best ways to support you achieve your goals. Whether it’s your career aspirations, exploring a passion, or travelling the world, together you and the NDIS can make it possible.
