P

roperty prices making headlines – there is nothing new about that. For decades, Australians have had a fascination with the real estate market, and for good reason. The age old Great Australian Dream rings true in our hearts – settle down, buy a house with the white picket fence and happily live out our days. Of course, the Aussie property market has had its fair share of ups and downs, what with soaring and plummeting interest rates, growing prices and an ongoing scrabble for beachside land. But the headlines in recent weeks have been particularly concerning, delivering blow after blow about the troubling state of our market and the housing crisis to come. What’s important to note is that some of the facts and figures paint somewhat of a different picture. While, southern cities may have reached the proverbial glass ceiling with strong indication that property prices will continue to fall, it’s important to keep in mind that the Sunshine Coast is a market unto itself. According to three reputable property and economic experts we spoke with recently, the Sunshine Coast is still going strong, running its own race. Favourite song and why? As with books, I have a super-eclectic taste in music. I can’t possibly name an all-time favourite song, but I can’t get enough of Låpsley’s Long Way Home album right now. It’s so gorgeous.

When was the last time you played sport and what was it? Does dancing count? I don’t play sport (unless it’s at a family barbecue) but I love yoga and dance for fitness, and enjoy bike rides and swimming with the family. Best advice you’ve been given? Trust the process. It’s a simple reminder for me that I can push and hustle like crazy, but I’ll often surpass my goals with far less pain and exhaustion if I let my intuition lead and surrender to the journey. What is your favourite place on the Sunshine Coast and why? It’s hard to beat beautiful Wurtulla Beach. If you could change one thing on the Sunshine Coast, what would it be? I’d love to see more alternative schooling options spread along the Coast (particularly

Your greatest regret? Even the most difficult parts of my life so far. Despite pain or challenge, they’ve all provided me with unexpected gifts and opportunities to learn. What achievement are you most proud of? The day I graduated with a Master of Psychotherapy at 34 weeks pregnant with my second daughter!

You are happiest when? I am in flow with the needs of my family and my personal desires. What frustrates you the most? Getting swept up in the pressure to succeed and losing sight of things that really matter. If you could tell your 18-year-old self anything, what would it be? Listen to your body – it never lies. If you won $1 million, how would you spend it? Thankfully my husband’s sensible, grounded approach has rubbed off. I would invest the majority of it, but travel and adventure would be on the cards as well. Tea or coffee and how do you have it? Caramel latte on almond milk first thing in the morning and herbal tea throughout the day/evening. NRL or AFL? I avoid both equally. Ha!

The Sunshine Coast property market continues to run its own race, defying the trends seen in the southern states and the Queensland capital. WORDS: Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane.

T

he Sunshine Coast property market is continuing to flex its muscles despite reports the major Sydney and Melbourne markets are beginning to stagnate. In fact, multiple reports have highlighted the region as the jewel in the state property crown, having outperformed almost every market in southeast Queensland in the past 12 months. This alone will give peace of mind to those second-guessing their future as homeowners and investors, but when you also consider a number of renowned property experts are firmly backing the Sunshine Coast as the market to watch, it is easy to have confidence that the region will continue to ride on the property upcycle trajectory. Place Projects property commentator Syd Walker says population growth, the strength of tourism and the economy and the continued property demand versus supply imbalance have created the perfect conditions for the thriving property market. “The rate of [population] growth on the Sunshine Coast is more than most developed countries and one of the fastest rates in the country,” he says. “This strong population growth in the area has seen demand for property outstrip supply during recent years with new developments recording strong sales volumes and established properties consistently being sold at higher prices than they were purchased for. “Tourism growth to the Sunshine Coast has remained fairly steady with over 12 million visitor nights last year. This has

helped the economy enjoy strong jobs growth during recent years. In the year to June 2018 jobs growth was recorded at 7.1 per cent. “There are at least 12 major infrastructure projects planned for the area over the coming years with many additional minor projects also planned. “These 12 infrastructure projects alone are expected to inject approximately $25 billion into the Sunshine Coast regional area economies over the coming years, as well as create over 36,000 direct and indirect jobs and attract 20,000 students and over 110,000 residents to the area. The scale of these infrastructure projects will have a significant impact on the economy.” The Place Advisory Sunshine Coast Regional Area Property Market Report shows despite a soft decline in sales volumes in the past 12 months, largely due to lack of supply coming onto the market, demand for property has increased thanks to the boost in jobs and trust in the local economy. “The region’s property market has now moved into unprecedented heights, defying the lacklustre growth that has occurred in Brisbane during the same period. The past year, ending June 2018, has seen impressive growth rates of 7.3 per cent for houses and 4.8 per cent for units recorded for the region overall,” Mr Walker says. This is backed up by the latest BIS Economics Australian Housing Outlook. The report reveals the Coast is the state’s star performer for 2018, with price rises outperforming both Brisbane and the Gold

Coast over the past year. The report shows median house prices on the Sunshine Coast rose by three per cent in the year to June 2018 and are expected to continue to grow strongly, reaching $650,000 in 2021. In comparison, the report predicts the Brisbane median house price will reach just $615,000 in 2021. Project Urban managing director Andrew Stevens says the local property market is on an “upswing” and poised to capitalise on the southern downturn through migration, which

will inject financial investment and intellectual property into the region. “This is the first property cycle where our population and economy has hit a selfsustaining level. Our proximity to Brisbane will always have some influence, however the Sunshine Coast has matured and is taking control if its own future,” he says. “I cannot remember a time when the market was so solid. Yes, we have had plenty

of upturns in the past, but never with the fundamentals for our economy so strong. “[It is] conservative growth supported by employment generation and infrastructure investment. The Coast’s economy is more sophisticated than in previous property cycles with the fundamentals providing a safety net against a national property downturn.” He says while the future for the Coast has never looked brighter, it is more important than ever to maintain housing affordability. The region is expected to hold 10 per cent of southeast Queensland’s new housing development – being some 38,000 new dwellings – over the next 20 to 25 years. Gold Coast Commonwealth Games gold medallist Jake Packard (pictured) has been named USC’s Sportsperson of the Year for 2018. The powerful breaststroke swimmer and Animal Ecology student received his trophy from USC’s Vice-Chancellor Professor Greg Hill at the USC Sports Awards ceremony in Sippy Downs. The 24-year-old Palmview resident claimed gold as a member of Australia’s 4x100m medley relay team at the Commonwealth Games in April, setting a Games record. Mr Packard also won medals at the 2018 Pan Pacific Swimming Championships in August and the Rio Olympics in 2016.

YOUNG MATHEMATICIANS GO HEAD TO HEAD Hundreds of the region’s brightest young minds converged on the Lake Kawana Community Centre for the annual Sunshine Coast Mathematics Tournament. The tournament is one of the highlights of the year for schools on the Sunshine Coast, challenging students in areas of mental arithmetic, team problem solving and relay problem solving. Year 6 and Year 7 students competed on day one and Year 8 to Year 12 students competed on day two. NEW PROGRAM BOOST FOR APPRENTICESHIPS Young people on the Sunshine Coast, and the businesses that employ them, are set to benefit from the Federal Government’s investment of $60 million in a new apprenticeships incentive. The investment will support a trial of wage subsidies for businesses who employ apprentices. From January 1 next year, a new subsidy under the Australian Apprenticeships Incentives Program will support new apprentices in trades on the National Skills Needs list like plumbing, mechanical, electrical, baking and hairdressing. Queensland’s long-awaited Containers for Change Scheme kicked off last week and 160,000 containers were returned at TOMRA Recycling Centres on the opening day of the scheme. LOCAL HOSPITALS IN GREAT SHAPE A new reports shows there is increasing demand for health-care services on the Coast.

he Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service (SCHHS) has released its 2017/18 annual report, which highlights how much demand has grown for services since the opening of the Sunshine Coast University Hospital. Among some of the more impressive figures are the 284 babies born at SCUH in August last year and the $17-million redevelopment of the Caloundra Health Service, which began last November. More than $3 million was invested every day to provide health care to the community, an increase of 22 per cent from the previous financial year. However, Member for Caloundra Mark McArdle has expressed concerns about the reported operating loss of $13.9 million as the wage and salary bill increased by $99.27 million across the health service. Queensland’s Minister for Health Dr Steven Miles says an extra 368 nurses, health practitioners, medical staff and operational staff were employed in that time in order to offer Coast residents the best in health care. He predicts a balanced operating position in 2019. SCHHS board chair Dr Lorraine Ferguson says 2017 and 2018 included a lot of important milestones and

achievements for the service. “The commissioning of SCUH Stage 2 built environment and preparation for, and opening of, new tertiary services continued,” she says. “In January the Paediatric Critical Care Unit opened, providing much-needed care for critically ill or injured children closer to home. “Work on the redevelopment and refurbishment of the Caloundra and Nambour hospitals continued this year and we will see increases in a number of beds and services at these facilities as works are completed.” The roles of the Nambour and Caloundra hospitals have changed since the SCUH opened in March 2017. Nambour General Hospital’s capacity has reduced from 425 to 137 beds. Redevelopment of the hospital is expected to be complete in 2022 and will see bed capacity increase to 251. The Caloundra Health Service has reduced to 34 beds and by the time refurbishment is completed at the end of 2018, the number will rise slightly to 46 beds and bed alternatives. The annual report says Nambour and Caloundra will be fitted out with purpose-built infrastructure that will assist in the delivery of allied services and models of care that will reduce the demand on the SCUH. The second stage of the SCUH program will build on the capacity of the hospital, with bed capacity to increase from 507 to 602 beds. There are also plans for additional clinical spaces and new tertiary services and specialisations such as vascular surgery, plastic and reconstructive surgery, head and neck surgery, maternal foetal medicine, complex paediatrics, neonatology, cardiac surgery, neurosurgery, trauma, thoracic surgery and interventional neuro radiology.

HELP MILLER AND HIS MUM Imagine your five-year-old child catches a cold and then two weeks later he loses the ability to speak, move and even feed himself. You are then given a diagnosis no parent should ever have to hear – that your beautiful boy has a terminal disease. This is the reality for Miller O’Flynn’s mum Sophie Cashen. The Sunshine Coast boy, who is now seven, has PKAN (pantothenate kinase-associated neurodegeneration). People with PKAN lack a chemical necessary to metabolise a vitamin in the brain. Without normal levels of this metabolite, part of the brain degenerates, causing severe problems with walking, co-ordination, vision, speech and swallowing. PKAN affects one in one million people and many children with PKAN die before the age of 10. Because Miller’s airways are now affected by dystonia, with spasms that pull his tongue back so he gasps for air, he needs to be lying down in order to obtain the safest airway possible. He can also no longer sit up on his own, and his body is constantly twisting and spasming. Normal car travel is just no longer possible for young Miller, his mother and baby sister. “As we don’t have a suitable vehicle, we just can’t get out of the house anymore,” says Ms Cashen. “We want to take him to see the water, and to stroll along the beaches. He would so love to swing at the park and see his friends and family, but he’s stuck laying on his mattress on the floor at home. “A larger, safer vehicle would be life changing. Truly, Miller would be able to live his life with dignity and doing the things every little boy deserves to be doing.” Local businesswoman and mum Jess Ryder is helping the family raise the much-needed funds to get the van they need. Ms Ryder is holding a fundraiser with all proceeds going to Miller and his family.

Local palliative care patients are benefitting from music therapy. WORDS: Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane.

M

usic is powerful for healing the soul and no one knows that more than Tracie Wicks. The music therapist at Dove Palliative Care Unit harnesses the power of music with songwriting, improvisation, guided imagery and music, lyric analysis, singing, instrument playing and music therapy relaxation techniques to help patients and their families. Wishlist recently committed more than $50,000 to funding the music therapy program at Dove Cottage until 2021, increasing the hours from 10 to 15 hours per week. Music therapists are university-trained practitioners who use music to actively support people to improve their health. Mrs Wicks has a masters in music therapy and has been working as a therapist for eight years. She says when she first began working at Dove, she had just four hours a fortnight to connect with the patients. “When they increased it to 10 hours a week, I instantly saw a huge change [in the patients] and now moving to 15 hours each week, we can do follow-up sessions and build on what we are doing,” she says. “I can give

them more continuity and offer greater support such as assisting in making personalised music playlists for them to use between sessions. I am also able to see a greater number of patients. “Professionally, I am also more integrated into the care team and can collaborate with other disciplines and be at those important meetings where they discuss the needs of patients and how we can best address them.” Music therapy can help with pain management, reduce stress and anxiety, and

allows patients to reconnect with their identity, creates positive memories and provides a way for them to express their emotions or their thoughts with more ease. “Some people have been musicians all their lives and haven’t been able to engage with music due to their illness. Recently I was working with a 95-year-old who loved going to dances in her youth and she was able to reminisce through music. This also helped reduce feelings of anxiety and shortness of breath. Another patient was a dancer and she wanted dance music played in her last few days of her life because it was such a huge part of her identity,” Mrs Wicks says. “I also do legacy work, including working with the patients to create a music-assisted life review, where you are looking at the music that has been meaningful in that patient’s life and compiling a list of this music for their families. Caloundra’s newest mural is literally jumping off the wall. Commissioned by Sunshine Coast Council, the new work, which is the region’s first public artwork to use augmented reality, is titled The Looking Glass Fish in the Deep Hue Sea. It is a collaboration between Melbourne-based artist George Rose and digital artist Stu Campbell (Sutu), founder of the EyeJack app – a platform where visitors can view animated work on any mobile device. Sutu originally began his practice as a comic book artist, but quickly realised the potential to create an interactive realm for his illustrations with enhanced storytelling abilities. This has evolved into taking the Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality(AR) world by storm, being commissioned by the likes of Marvel, Google and Disney.

A Sunshine Coast woman has chronicled her story since being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 2007, and has created a raw account of how the disease changed her life. What Sharon Millows thought was simply a sprained ankle she sustained while picking strawberries in 2007 turned out to be an overt symptom of an underlying problem. After undergoing a barrage of testing, Ms Millows was 41 when she was diagnosed with MS on March 24 that year. In the 11 years that have since passed, Ms Millows has gone from working as a personal assistant to the boss of a legal firm and indulging in her passion for motorcycle riding and photography, to increasingly becoming physically restricted by MS. Ms Millows is now sharing her story as the realisation of what the disease was doing to her set in. Her book, The MonSter will be launched with a free event at the Glasshouse Country Baptist Church on November 14 at 10am. Funds raised through the sale of The MonSter on the day will support the Multiple Sclerosis Society and the Glasshouse Chaplaincy.

It was the day his daughter came home from school in tears. “My daughter went to a careers day and was asked, ‘What are you going to be when you grow up?’. I like to call that, ‘What do you want to be when you give up?’. She said she wanted to be a professional cellist or an artist. “Without hesitation, the careers guidance counsellor said, ‘Yeah, but what are you going to do for money?’. She came home really upset. It broke her heart. “When she told me, I was furious. I was pacing around the kitchen, fuming. I was saying, ‘Just because [the guidance counsellor] may have given up on her dreams and ambition, it doesn’t mean you have to’. We have a large mirror in the dining room and I literally looked straight into the mirror and thought, ‘Well, what example are you?’. I was working in a job, ignoring my passions.” He decided it was time to prove he could make a life filled with creativity and set an example for his daughter Jazmyn, now 16. “That was the moment of change for me,” he says. “The next moment started everything, and that was a conversation around the table about how do we make art more accessible to everyone?” This question led him to develop Pixel Mosaic, a world-first interactive digital art project that reached thousands of students from 74 schools to express themselves in colour using Arduino technology. He now runs a boutique research and development service, Mic’s Lab, travelling the world working on high-impact social and economic projects and guest lecturing in universities. A prolific inventor and early-stage investor in novel technologies, he believes in open sharing and collaboration to show others it’s not really hard to do really hard things. “I’m a professional maker. Sharing that experience with others is what drives me.” A local project he’s currently involved with is the Noosa Hydro project, one of a slew of Sunshine Coast projects that won awards at GovHack in September, where more than 3000 participants across Australia data hacked over a 46-hour weekend. The Noosa Hydro project won the Sunshine Coast Sustainability Challenge and will progress to the national awards in Canberra on November 10. “It’s a project initiated by local resident genius Chris Drake,” Mr Black says. “Using government data, he discovered a unique coastal current just off the Peregian Beach coastline. It harnesses these ocean currents to give us renewable energy for the entire region. What’s really unique about this is it’s a

brand-new design – the way the propellers work are not marine life death traps. A small installation around a kilometre long could sustainably and reliably power all of Noosa and four of those may even power the whole Sunshine Coast. “I’ve worked with Chris on a few projects before. This time I built a demonstration model for the project at the Sunshine Coast Maker Space in Warana. We worked through the night doing the math and laser cutting a model until it was able to describe the brilliance of Chris’ original design and then extend on it. “ “It’s the equivalent of having a wind farm with 2000 kilometre-per-hour winds all year round. It’s so efficient and constant, unlike solar or wind.” Mr Black and Mr Drake have presented the concept to the Sunshine Coast and Noosa councils and are now working on defining a feasibility study. “The current is so intense and

it comes right near our shoreline,” Mr Black says. “Not only is it a unique technology, it’s also using something we are already blessed with in this beautiful place where we live.” Mr Black also won the Spirit of GovHack Award. This was awarded for his willingness to help multiple teams despite them being competitors, freely sharing his knowledge, and for taking along a modified 3D printer and printing pancakes for the participants – a duck pancake with Elvis hair was the most popular. Mr Black says he can’t believe this world of ideas and invention is now his day job, and he’s paid to travel the world working with great creative minds. This year alone, he’s built full-size self-driving cars, automated a farm, set up multiple makerspaces and worked with organisations like the Chelsea Football Club in London and the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and the Australian Film Television and Radio Service. “I’m known for doing cutting-edge things with technology, then sharing that knowledge freely. This year we taught 60 farmers how to build their own Internet of Things devices to automate their farms, which was featured on Landline. It was such a real and valuable moment to re-equip these ingenious farmers with new tools and freedoms.” Mr Black is often told his ideas are ‘pie in the sky’ so to prove that’s not an obstacle, he’s planning to launch an actual meat pie into near space, just to prove it can be done. “We’re going for a world record for the highest pie in the sky,” he says. “I’m hoping it will meet up with a flying saucer, which is a projective tomato sauce canon that will shoot tomato sauce onto the pie. “If you were to tell me back in 2014 this is what my normal life was going to be like and I was going to meet all these amazing people and have the ability to collaborate on out-of-this-world ridiculous projects, I would not have believed you, and neither would my daughter. Now we call it ‘Tuesday’.”

A FILM WORTH STAYING UP FOR

HAVING A REAL RELATIONSHIP

Sami Muirhead has finally managed to sit through a movie without falling asleep and she’s got Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga to thank.

Suzanne Loubris says the idea that love is enough to keep a relationship alive is the stuff of fantasy. Effective communicate is where it’s at.

S

omething momentous happened in my little life during the week: I went to a movie for adults and I stayed awake. I have not done that for about eight years. Anyone who is single, childless and smug will not understand. But put me in a dark space after devouring a choc-top or two and it is a recipe to drift off and drool in public. I have stayed awake in plenty of kids’ movies because I spend most of the time taking kids to the loo or telling them to be quiet or explaining the plot or sitting with three kids on my lap. You see, I have an unofficial movie club with some of the mums from school and I am pretty much the laughing stock of the group as I have become famous for snoring away merrily about half an hour into every movie we have ever seen together. Recently, there was Mama Mia: Here We Go Again. I was in and out of a deep sleep and could not make any sense of the singing all-star blockbuster cast in their ’70s costumes and renditions of ABBA songs. It was as if I was having frightful hallucinations that involved Cher and donkeys and cocktails on a Greek Island. Then we saw that movie called A Simple Favour staring Blake Lively. I was catching z’s within the first 15 minutes. I could have just set fire to my ticket money. It is a shame, as I do not get out too often and I would like to be friends with these mums – my kids going to school has given me the unexpected gift of lovely new

relationships. Before school, I thought my friendship card was full. I was too busy for new friends. I had too many friends I already never see. How wrong I was. I love catching up with these delightful women after drop-off or grabbing a quick coffee with them. They have my back in our bunker of trying to make it through the school days. These women understand my frustrations and joys when it comes to raising kids. They text me when the monkeys have school swimming the next day to remind me to pack togs. They pass me gold coins without saying a word when they can see the alarmed look on my face in the classroom when I realise I have forgotten another sausage sizzle fundraiser. They ring me if I forget to pick up a kid. And they like to have a wine. In fact before movie night, we like to have a big feed of Mexican and a margarita. Which could also explain my issues with nighttime narcolepsy. The movie I stayed awake for was A Star Is Born. It is magnificent! It is so gritty and raw and captivating. Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper take you to another universe with their passion and singing. And pashing. The pashing is so, so, good. And the soundtrack is out of this world. It was a night of extreme emotions indeed between my school-night margarita plus staying awake plus falling in love with Gaga and Bradley. I slept like a baby in my bed that night.

e all like to believe we will love someone forever. When we enter into a relationship we cannot imagine not loving everything about that person. This wonderful state lasts about two years and is known as the honeymoon period. It’s complete insanity to think that love will carry us through every relationship crisis. We are surrounded by people getting divorced, yet we are eternally optimistic. At no point during this blissful state do we take time out to gain some skills on how to talk to each other when the veil lifts and reality sets in. Why on earth do his socks never make it into the washing basket? Why does she talk during the game? Can’t he at least wear a nice shirt when we go out to dinner? Does she have to have so many pairs of shoes? We have two people who both think they are fine the way they are. Without any training, we expect these two people to have an adult conversation about the things they do that drive the other person insane. Mostly what happens is that if one person broaches the subject of relationship imperfection, the other person believes they are being attacked. Coping mechanisms include defensiveness, aggression, walking out and silent treatment. “You don’t listen to me” is the favourite of all the complaints women make about men. Men do listen to women – when they are trying to win them over. A bit like a

hunter. Once they have achieved the goal, there is no further purpose to hunt/listen. It’s just a theory. I haven’t proved it yet. Remember: listening isn’t something you do with your ear pointed in the direction of your partner while the remote is in your hand and your attention is on the TV set. It’s about being present. Engaged. Interested. Making your partner feel valued and important to you. From what I have seen, women also need to understand there is a time to talk to a man and a time to be silent. Let’s see what it looks like to be an adult having a useful conversation in a relationship. When someone says – “You keep talking over me” – don’t say, “No I don’t”. Say, “Really? I didn’t realise. Thanks for letting me know. I better stop doing that. Let me know when I do it again.” When someone says – “Can you do more housework?” – say, “Okay, let’s draw up a roster and work out who is responsible for which jobs and when they need to be done.” Two adults in a relationship can negotiate these issues. Don’t stop until both parties are satisfied with the outcome. Until fairness has been achieved. Remember that while optimism is wonderful, it doesn’t glue a relationship together quite like being really interested in what you can do to make sure that the other person is willing to put up with you for another year or 20. Be interested in your imperfections. It might save your relationship.

T

he clock is ticking as markets head into the final quarter of 2018. We have seen heightened market volatility in recent weeks and note that the Australian dollar is now trading at around $US0.71 at the time of writing. The Australian dollar has continued its fall against the US dollar this year. The decline has been precipitated by weakness across emerging markets as fears of a US-China trade war intensified. This has not been the chief reason behind our view of Australian dollar weakness, however; rather, it is a widening in interest rate differentials with the US. We have now revised our outlook, which still sees a further, but more modest decline for the Aussie against the greenback. The local currency is second only to the Swedish

krona as the worst-performing G10 currency against the US dollar in 2018, with even the Chinese yuan (offshore traded), down circa six per cent, faring better despite concerns over the impact of trade imposts on growth in the world’s second-largest economy. The latest slide in the Australian dollar came as the US threatened to raise tariffs on another $US200 billion of imports from China, which sent the price of base metals lower. An easing in the trade rhetoric, and Standard and Poor’s (S&P) upgrade to the outlook for Australia’s AAA rating from negative to stable, allowed some recovery from around $US0.71 to almost $US0.73. This was short-lived, however, as the trade war tensions ratcheted up again, sending the Aussie down below $US0.71 at time of writing. We doubt this marks the end of its decline, although the weakness should be more gradual from here. Our currency forecasts now see the Australian dollar reaching $US0.70 by the end of 2018 and $US0.68 by the middle of 2019. There are three main reasons for this prediction. 1. Australia-US interest rate differentials – We forecast the US Federal Reserve to deliver further interest rate rises (around 0.25 percentage points per quarter into 2019) while the Reserve Bank of Australia stays on hold. This means that by

mid-2019 the US federal funds rate could be three per cent, versus Australia’s benchmark cash rate at 1.5 per cent. 2. Tax gap – Australia has one of the highest corporate tax rates globally, particularly among Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development countries. The US, for example, recently cut its federal corporate tax rate to 21 per cent, compared with Australia’s 30 per cent. 3. Economic convergence – Real Gross Domestic Product growth in Australia should slow to 2.5 per cent in 2019 from 3.2 per cent in 2018 as the incremental

contribution from mining exports fades, while consumer spending and housing growth slows. This would see growth largely on par with the US. Some preferred off-shore earners that should benefit from a falling Australian dollar include Boral, Reliance Worldwide, and Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield. time PUB CHOIR HITS OCEAN ST The Ocean Street Precinct look set to host the biggest Pub Choir to date as part of the Summer Series. WORDS: Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane.

he venues that make Ocean Street a vibrant cultural entertainment hub have banded together to create the collaborative Ocean Street Precinct, which is bringing a series of five Summer Series events to life in the coming months. The Precinct now features the Coastal Quarter, a massive temporary venue that includes a 600-metre-squared weatherproof marquee. The challenge is on for Pub Choir to set a new record by filling the venue to its 2000-person capacity on November 10. Ocean Street Precinct spokesperson Jo Jordan says the Coastal Quarter will become a temporary music classroom as participants, who don’t need any musical experience or even to be able to sing in tune, come to learn the lyrics and harmonies from a popular song. “The Pub Choir phenomenon is taking off,” she says. “Their latest events in Brisbane and on the Gold Coast sold out. People are just loving the idea of coming together and

singing as part of this group activity with a beer in their hand. “Because the Coastal Quarter is significantly larger than any of the venues that have hosted Pub Choir, we have the opportunity to become the largest event of this kind.” The Coastal Quarter is located near Solbar and includes a stage, amenities as well as food and drink options. “It’s basically a pop-up venue,” Ms Jordan says. “Really we are just amplifying the things we know and love about Ocean Street.” Visitors can visit oceanstreet.com.au to find everything about the venues in the street and all of the gigs and special events happening in the precinct. The Coastal Quarter will host five Summer Series events in November and December, proudly supported by My Weekly Preview.

From almost 1000 votes, a painting by local artist AJ Taylor has won the Sunshine Coast Art Prize 2018 People’s Choice Award. The work titled Sapling Forest (Morning Light), by the Woombye-based artist, received the most public votes during the Sunshine Coast Art Prize 2018 exhibition to take out the $2500 award, sponsored by Caloundra Chamber of Commerce. Arts Portfolio Cr Rick Baberowski says, “I can see the appeal of Sapling Forest and why it has clearly captured the imagination of the viewing public. It’s worth remembering that the Sunshine Coast Art Prize exhibition includes a high calibre of artists from right across Australia, so it’s particularly pleasing to see a local artist receiving this award and being recognised for his talent by gallery visitors and online voters.”

TODD’S TALES Todd Widdicombe is having trouble switching his brain – and bladder – off.

S

o after extensive research amongst my mates, I’ve concluded that when the average person gets into bed, they’re out for the night. Not me. I’m finding as I get older, I’ve adopted the bladder of a 92-year-old grandmother, so I’m up at least once in the night, on average twice and if I don’t treat it like a Formula One pitstop, my brain wakes up and starts its ritual banging on… “Hey Todd, I wonder if the guy who invented the phrase ‘one hit wonder’ ever came up with any other sayings?”. “Don’t forget to order tuckshop for the mini terrorists in the morning.” “Okay, nighty night.” “Hang on, what was the name of the town in The Flying Doctors again? Mount Thomas?” “Nah, that was Blue Heelers.”

“Funny thought – if you spot a chameleon, it’s a bad chameleon, yeah? Write that down…” “Who the hell invented fishnet stockings? Was there a fisherman who got caught in a net and he’s all, “Help fellas, help, my legs are caught in this net,” and his mates are all, “Geez, Troy looks hot right now.” Yep, that’s just a sample of the average night with me and my grey matter. Luckily I can find distraction by knocking the top off a cold frothy chop and this week’s beer is a ripper from the champions at Hawkers. The Hawkers XPA picked up the top honour at this year’s Aussie International Beer Awards with its refreshingly bitter taste and big hop presence. This little baby delivers layers of tropical, fruity and floral aromas with a slight fizz and a fruity caramel aftertaste. If you like a pale ale but you want more kick and find the IPAs more intense than a camping trip in the rain, have a crack at Hawkers XPA, (Extra Pale Ale) it sits right in between, it’s a quality quaffer and as far as XPAs go, the best in the land. I give the Hawkers XPA a sound 4 out of 5 thumbs up.

The inspiration for The Pearl Thief came from a museum exhibition – how did you then create the interconnecting tale of the people surrounding the jewels? I saw a magnificent piece of jewellery many years ago at the British Museum and it stuck in my mind. When it was time to think about this book, I actually began with Prague, a city I’d visited repeatedly in my life and was keen to set a story in. Once I’d decided on Prague for a new story, I realised it was also the city that essentially set WWII in motion.

CHIA PUDDING INGREDIENTS • 125g black chia seeds • 500ml almond milk • 1tbsp brown sugar • 1tbsp vanilla essence • 250ml boiling water

CHEF’S TIP The chia mix and the poached rhubarb need to be made 24 hours before serving

• 250gm white sugar • ½ bunch rhubarb stems • Roasted macadamia nuts • Maple syrup • Fresh mint

METHOD Chia mix: Add chia seeds to (room temperature) almond milk. Stir through brown sugar and vanilla essence. Let it rest in fridge for two hours. Spoon chilled chia mix into mason jars, ¾ full. Poached rhubarb: Cut rhubarb in 2cm chunks. Boil water and sugar together, stirring constantly. Take off heat and add rhubarb. Leave rhubarb in syrup until cool. Strain and put in fridge. To assemble: Take mason jar with chia mix and add a little maple syrup. Top with rhubarb chunks, roasted macadamia a nuts and a sprig of fresh mint. Serve on a small plate..

MY HOME CHECKLIST These are key design elements to consider when planning for your home. • Weatherboard – traditional Hamptons design means taking a step away from our Queensland love of rendered brick. Whitewashed or grey weatherboard with sandstone or stone elements is as Hamptons as it gets. • Balustrade – for two-storey homes with internal staircases, balustrade plays an important design role. It should be square and white. • Flooring – use slate or naturallooking tiles. Light-coloured or off-white timber flooring will also work. • Shutters – roller blinds will not work with this style. Instead, opt for plantation-style shutters. • Floor plan – rooms should create conversation. W

hen you think of Cairns, one of the first images that pops into your mind is most likely related to the Great Barrier Reef and being near or on the ocean. But Cairns has a lot more in common with the Sunshine Coast than you might think – it’s close to the beach with a lush and thriving hinterland providing a stunning backdrop to the city. There is a wealth of experiences in the Atherton Tablelands, which rise up behind Cairns, and getting to one of the most popular destinations, Kuranda, is an adventure in itself. Kuranda is a small leafy village at the top of the tablelands that has a thriving arts scene. While a leisurely stroll through town sampling the culinary delights will be enough to satisfy some, there are also many other experiences on offer, from witnessing the mighty Barron Falls to walking among butterflies or watching a demonstration of how to ‘milk’ a venomous spider. During our latest trip to Cairns, we decided to make a real day of our Kuranda adventure and booked tickets on the world-famous Kuranda Scenic Railway. The kids were in awe as the majestic engine rolled

into the station and the carriages maintain that real heritage feel as you nestle into the bench seats for the journey, which lasts just under two hours. The winding track rises from sea level up to a whopping 328 metres high and passes through World Heritage-protected tropical rainforest, and chugs so close to some of the spectacular waterfalls that you can feel the spray through the windows. While it’s not as interesting for the little ones, there is a running commentary that explains the significance of the railway, which was constructed between 1882 and 1891 when hundreds of men dug out the 15 tunnels and constructed the bridges with brute force and simple tools. A short stopover at the towering Barron Gorge gives everyone a chance to stretch their legs and get some photos before embarking on the last short leg to Kuranda. When you are in town, there is so much to do. For us, it was a relaxed walk up and down the street, checking out the many artisan offerings and buying a gift or two to take home. When the tummies started to rumble, there was plenty on offer from standard bakery fare to specialist eateries. We decided to take the kids to The

Australian Butterfly Sanctuary and it was fantastic. Stepping into the large enclosed aviary was like teleporting to another world. The abundance of flowers, shrubs and delicate winding waterways was simply stunning and it was easy to pass a couple of hours making our way slowly around and stopping to admire the delicate butterflies as they showcased the incredible colour combinations on their wings. Those wearing brightly coloured clothing who stand still for an extended period of time might be lucky enough to attract a butterfly or two to land on their shirt – something my youngest was absolutely thrilled to achieve on several occasions during our visit. With the day quickly passing, we made our way to the final stage of our adventure, the Kuranda Skyrail Rainforest Cableway. While taking in the awe-inspiring view from the cabin as you descend is a treat in itself, there are also two stations in which you can get off and have a stroll through ancient rainforests or spend time in the interpretive centre to gain a greater understanding of the flora and fauna that live on the mountain. This was a truly magical way to round out an incredible day of exploration in and around Kuranda.

he craze of augmented reality (AR) burst onto the scene when the Pokémon Go craze saw people walking the streets with their phones in hand trying to catch them all. But the technology is now being harnessed by real estate agents to add another layer of sophistication to the local property market. McGrath Estate Agents are leading the charge on the Sunshine Coast by introducing AR to their marketing campaigns to enhance potential buyer engagement. Agent Damien Michael says the Buderim and Mooloolaba agencies are piloting the technology for the entire group, giving Sunshine Coast buyers and sellers the first opportunity to experience the impact AR can have. “Augmented reality allows the seller to better showcase their property through video,’’ he says. “This innovative technology allows buyers to get a better feel for the property they are looking at. By visually bringing the ads to life with augmented reality, buyers can look through a property instantaneously and click through the web listing with a single touch.” Mr Michael says the AR stamp on the McGrath print ads that feature in My Property Preview “bring the ad to life”. All readers have to do is download the free AR app and scan the main image in the ad to activate a video showcasing the property. From there, they can click through to the property listing and get in touch with the sales agent with the touch of a button. “Utilising this technology will give buyers an immediate insight into the property and in turn drive buyer enquiry. By

The majority of our properties are now videoed by our local full-time McGrath videographer and the AR technology is yet another way we can showcase our properties to the market.” UnifiedAR co-founder Steven Belshaw says AR is predicted to be a $6-billion industry by 2021, with an estimated 70 per cent of businesses utilising the technology. “Augmented reality is here to stay and it’s only going to

get bigger. Those getting on board now, like McGrath, are going to be the leaders both now and into the future,” he says. Mr Belshaw and business partner Kaushal Gunaratne have worked with many small to medium-sized enterprises to develop AR applications for their businesses and he says the possibilities are “pretty much limitless”. “From a property perspective, you can do what McGrath do and link print advertising through to video and you could also create an application where you can hold your camera up to the outside of a house and it will link to a video,” he says. “For builders and developers, you can link materials through to 3D models or renders of properties so people buying off the plan can see what the final product will look like and get a visual indication of how it will look on the land. These can be linked through a brochure, print advertising or signage. You could also deliver 3D walk-throughs through AR. It really streamlines the process for the consumer.” With 2021 just a few years away, Mr Belshaw says the technology is poised to explode. “Every day, you turn around and there’s a new idea being created,” he says. “This used to be limited by budgets and accessible to only the top five per cent of businesses, but it is now becoming more accessible for all industries.” To see how AR works for yourself, download the AR app and try it out on this week’s McGrath advertising.
