F

or the past two weekends, my husband and I have made a point of getting out and about to experience all that the Sunshine Coast region has to offer.

From a day spent in the hinterland to another exploring the beautiful coastline from Caloundra through to Noosa, we have devoted time to become reacquainted with this beautiful place we call home.

We have a specific goal – to introduce our four-year-old to new experiences and educate him about the surrounding environment.

We’ve spent hours bushwalking, browsing and driving through stunning scenery.

It has been wonderful stumbling across interesting shops and markets overflowing with local and farm-fresh produce.

And one of my all-time favourite things to do as a foodie is to enjoy a long lunch with my family.

From five-star dining to quirky and eclectic cafes, we’ve discovered it all.

The Sunshine Coast truly is a melting pot of fresh, seasonal produce and this can be seen on hundreds of well-planned menus, and store shelves.

From paddock to plate, our growers and restaurateurs are doing this region proud, our foodie trail is second to none.

I hope you enjoy this week’s special food edition as much as we enjoyed compiling it.

First job? A seafood restaurant in Buenos Aires.

What are you currently working on? A few things: Lola’s Pantry, a casual cafe and catering business; a burger shop called Grass Fed in Brisbane; new products for Fenn Foods; and an avante-garde plant-based restaurant for 2020.

Your family includes… My wife Paola, one-year-old daughter Lola and Lily (a little Westie).

Your greatest regret? No regrets. Things happen for a reason.

First car? A VW Golf in the UK.

What achievement are you most proud of?

Professionally, I’m really proud of being able to build a team of good people who can deliver a great experience for our guests. Personally, I’m super proud of the family and friends I have around me.

Favourite book? That depends on so many factors (when you read it, what’s happening in your life, your age and mood), but I really like the one I’m reading now, Agil Mente by Estanislao Bachrach. It is so interesting I read each chapter twice. The book is about how our brain works, to improve creativity and improve life.

Favourite song and why? If I have to pick one, it would be Somewhere Over The Rainbow by Israel Kamakawiwo‘ole, just because it reminds me of my wife.

What are you watching right now? I just finished Money Heist, a really good series, but I’m looking forward to watching Who is America? (I love Sacha Baron Cohen’s humour).

When was the last time you played sport? I ran the Gold Coast Half Marathon this year. I would love to do more sports, but it has been hard this year with all I have on my plate.

Best advice you’ve been given? Sleep while you can (before having a child). Hahaha!

BIO Alejandro Cancino is a former executive chef of Urbane, Brisbane’s only three-hatted restaurant. Earlier this year, he moved to the Coast and became a Visit Sunshine Coast ambassador to showcase the region as one of Australia’s leading and most vibrant food tourism destinations. He is also pioneering plant-based cuisine under his own vegan food-label, Fenn Foods, and a vegan cafe/catering business called Lola’s Pantry.

be a turning point and why? There have been many days that really changed my life. When I started studying cooking and I knew there was a scholarship to France for the student with best marks, I told my mum, ‘in two years I will go to France’. When I started in the restaurant Mugaritz, it really shaped me as a chef and person. When I met my wife, that really changed my life.

What is your favourite place on the Coast and why?

I love the hinterland, where I’m looking for the right place to open a restaurant with views and a garden.

What frustrates you the most? When I don’t get closer to my goals and then I feel like I’m not enjoying myself.

How do you deal with your frustrations? I try to get back to the present and just enjoy the ride. Life is too short.

If you could tell your 18-year-self anything, what would it be? Don’t take things to seriously. Relax.

If you could have dinner with any three people, dead or alive, who would they be? I don’t idolise people. I would prefer not to meet the people who I admire for their ideas or careers. So, I would choose people I know, my wife, my step-father (rest in peace) and Mum. If you won $1 million, how would you spend it? I would invest it, and use the interest or profits to travel every year to a different part of the world.

Tea or coffee? I love tea, from iced oolong, to chai tea and everything in between.

NRL or AFL? Hahaha, I had to Google that question.

The Coast is one of Queensland’s biggest strawberry hubs and a number of these farms offer pick-your-own visits. McMartin’s Farm, located in Bli Bli, dates back to 1945. It started off as a sugar cane farm and then later became a dairy farm. There was no road access and supplies of groceries and mail used to be delivered by river on the mail boat. Cream from the dairy went by boat to Yandina. Today, it is a popular strawberry farm to visit.

According to Queensland Strawberries, eating eight strawberries a day has been shown to lower blood pressure and improve memory and heart health.

There is a reason the strawberry is considered the fruit of love and romance – it was a symbol for Venus, the Goddess of Love, because of its heart shape and red colour.

If you are a book lover, chances are you will recall the first time you read the brilliant The Return of the King by JRR Tolkien, which was first published in 1955: “Do you remember the Shire, Mr Frodo? It’ll be spring soon. And the orchards will be in blossom. And the birds will be nesting in the hazel thicket. And they’ll be sowing the summer barley in the lower fields… and eating the first of the strawberries with cream. Do you remember the taste of strawberries?”

Strawberries were originally cultivated in ancient Rome.

Eight strawberries contain more vitamin C than one orange. The fruit also contains fibre, potassium and antioxidants.

“Most of us have an emotional connection to food and it’s a key part of the social fabric of our lives,’’ she says.

“Valued at $700 million in 2018, with support from FAN and other stakeholders including Sunshine Coast Council, it is anticipated the industry will be valued at $1 billion by 2021,'' she says.

“Not only does it directly employ more than 3000 people, indirectly some 10,000 jobs can be attributed to the food and agribusiness industry.

“It’s so important to support local.

"It means our industry will grow, employ more locals and our food is freshest and doesn’t have to travel thousands of kilometres before it’s on our plates.”

CUT THEM UP, DON’T CUT THEM OUT Consumers are banding together to support strawberry farmers, with reports sales have bounced back following the fruit contamination scare.

The industry took a beating this month when needles found in strawberries caused widespread panic. Farmers were forced to dump tonnes of strawberries as supermarket giants Woolworths and Coles removed the fruit from their shelves.

Police have revealed more than 100 reports of contaminated fruit had been made around the country. Farmers and consumers alike have taken the issue in their stride, launching major #smashastrawb and #noneedleshere campaigns.

Meanwhile, the Australian Government last week announced that “food terrorists” would be met with harsher penalties – up to 10 to 15 years behind bars.

AAP reported that the government passed draft laws last Thursday in under four hours after Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced a crackdown on people sticking needles in strawberries.

HOW YOU CAN HELP • Photograph your strawberries and share on social media.

• Green Zebra Restaurant has added three strawberry cocktails to the menu – mojito, daiquiri and bellinis. Two dollars from each sold will be donated to help local farmers.

• Chop them up and freeze them.

• Get the family in the kitchen and do a cook up of strawberry cakes, jam and tarts.

CONTAINER REFUND SCHEME ON THE WAY The locations of Local Container Refund Points in Caloundra have been revealed as the state gears up for the introduction of the Container Refund Scheme (CRS) on November 1.

COAST TEEN BREAKS WORLD AVIATION RECORD When Liam Morey touched down on the tarmac at the Sunshine Coast Airport on Monday afternoon, he officially broke an aviation world record, becoming the youngest person to circumnavigate Australia solo and unassisted. The Buderim teen, who is 16 and nine months old, took off from the Sunshine Coast on September 1 and has travelled 16,000-kilometre and taken in 99 per cent of Australia’s coastline around all of the states and territories including Tasmania during the journey.

CALOUNDRA EAGLES IN FOR THE WIN The Caloundra Eagles women’s football team secured the Premier Championship following a nail-biting final against the Nambour Beegees.

The game moved into extra time with the score locked at one goal each. Caloundra captain Michelle Cerda’s steady boot ensured the team emerged victorious, breaking a 15-year drought for the team.

The Caloundra Chamber of Commerce has announced it will progress with the installation of CCTV security cameras secured through a $140,000 federal government grant. More than 20 cameras will be installed throughout the Caloundra business district and are expected to be operational before Christmas. The CCTV system, which boasts panoramic 180-degree cameras and a total of 33 imaging devices, will be managed and maintained by the Chamber.

The system also incorporates state of the art licence plate recognition technology, which instantly alerts police via text of any blacklisted registration number plates.

BIG BOOST FOR DEMENTIA AUSTRALIA Jamie Milne, Lee and Dan Rolley and another five Sunshine Coast business owners ran the length of the UK in July this year with the aim of raising money for Dementia Australia. On Wednesday Mr Milne, a strength and conditioning coach and the founder of charity organisation Many Miles for Mary (MMFM), presented Dementia Australia with a cheque for $13,000. MMFM is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year and Mr Milne says the latest donation brings the total amount raised through the organisation to more than $100,000, with half of that going to Dementia Australia.

hile the winners of the Sunshine Coast Art Prize have already been announced, Coast locals and art lovers still have time to vote for the People’s Choice.

Madeleine Kelly was named the $25,000 major prize winner for the event, for her piece Allowable Forms and Unconscious Facts, a contemporary painting that combines figurative and abstract imagery.

Ms Kelly’s piece has now become part of the Sunshine Coast Art Collection, joining more than 300 works (including paintings,

photographs, prints, sculpture, ceramics and textiles), which make up the collection.

Queensland artist Aaron Butt received the $5000 Highly Commended award for his work entitled Missed Encounter, while New South Wales artist Monika Behrens earned the Sunshine Coast Art Prize residency at Montville Country Cabins for her work entitled Hunting Trophy II. Mayor Jamieson says while the Sunshine Coast Art Prize has become the region’s signature annual art prize, it has also built up a national profile that culminates in an

exhibition of some of the nation’s best contemporary art.

“Our thanks to the judge Dr Campbell Gray, who decided on the winners from a high-calibre exhibition,” Mayor Jamieson says. “It would have been a difficult task and the three works he has chosen reflect the diversity of visual art that the Sunshine Coast Art Prize is able to showcase.”

Dr Gray, the director of The University of Queensland Art Museum, selected the winning artwork because of its complexity and ambiguity, underpinned by its high level of craftsmanship. “The foundations of this work are based in the artist’s visual and theoretical awareness of art history together with extensive personal capacity in the craft of painting,” Dr Gray says.

Local art lovers have a chance to see if they agree with the judge’s verdict – organisers are calling on them to vote for their favourite artwork by visiting the exhibition and voting in the gallery or voting online at the gallery website before October 14.

It’s been a tough competition. From the quality field of 325 entries, 40 established and emerging artists were named as finalists in the prestigious award. Arts portfolio

councillor Rick Baberowski says the art prize attracted entries from some of Australia’s best artists.

“The growing acclaim of the art prize has seen its reach spread far and wide, attracting first-time entries from a new generation of contemporary artists, as well as entries from several established artists with strong national and international profiles, including Jon Campbell, Madeleine Kelly, Danie Mellor and Monica Rohan.

“The finalists include five local artists, 16 Queensland artists in total, five Indigenous artists and 14 artists from regional locations.

“Congratulations to our local finalists Sam Cranstoun, AJ Taylor, Margaret Turner, Tori Beeche and Kim Guthrie.”

RIDING A NEW WAVE Three budding local entrepreneurs are seeing their ideas come to life.

n app that stops drivers using mobile phones, another that helps fashionistas find the clothes they are looking for and a portable mobile phone battery recharger are the top three ideas pitched by budding Sunshine Coast entrepreneurs in the 2018 Generation Innovation Challenge.

Selected from a field of 10 competitors, Ray Steele, Georgia Switala and Te Peina Henare have made it through to stage five of the six-stage competition for young people aged between 15 and 25.

Stages one to four included signing up, designing the concept, making the pitch and promoting the venture. The final three receive seed-funding up to $2500 with an opportunity to raise further funds with help from Generation Innovation (GI) through stage five – crowd-funding.

The three entrepreneurs put their business models to the test, raising more than $3000 combined, and Georgia was ecstatic to have beaten her $2000 target. The 15-yearold’s business, Fashion Hunta, provides retail fashion consumers with a platform to search the stock of local businesses with ease. MILKING IT Camel farming was never part of her grand plan, but QCamel founder Lauren Brisbane and her family have become pioneers in this niche industry in Australia, and they’ve found their happy place right here on the Sunshine Coast. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw.

L

auren Brisbane makes no secret about how much she loves camels. As the owner of local company QCamel, she owns 115 camels and says the key to creating the company’s award-winning camel milk products is love and kindness.

While she lives with her husband Peter in the Glass House Mountains, they lease a 3000-acre property at Bells Creek with beautiful views of the Glass House Mountains, where the camels can roam freely the way nature intended.

“We follow Bedouin traditions on pasture management,” Mrs Brisbane says. “They’re herd managed and they’re not locked up. We produce a great-quality product and that’s a testament to them being happy. If they’re a stressed and unhappy animal, you don’t produce a good product.”

Mrs Brisbane takes pride in not sending any male camels to the abattoir, instead rehoming them and training them for land management and as companion animals.

“Some are trained as ride camels but only

by a specific operator who looks after the camels the same way we do. We train our boys to be companion animals, so people can use them for land management, to eat weeds and co-graze with cattle.”

Mrs Brisbane wasn’t always a dairy farmer.

She spent her twenties in London as the general manager of a streetwear company, which had four stores in the heart of the city.

“This was in the ’80s and ’90s and I had a lot of fun. I lived in London the way you should live in London, driving a BMW, living in my own little flat and going out to restaurants and nightclubs, nicking off to Europe for a weekend, as you do.”

After returning to Australia, she married and had three children. A big life change arrived when her husband, a mining engineer, moved the family to Emerald and Moranbah in Central Queensland, a move that would lead to her current passion for camels.

“I didn’t wake up one day and think, camel milk, that’s a good idea,” she says. “We arrived in Central Queensland in the drought in the

’90 and I watched ’90s a llot of people go under. Every other un week there would we be a funeral.

“People who were “P generational ge farmers were fa either shooting e tthemselves or hanging o tthemselves. It was nothing they did n wrong. It wasn’t bad management – it was because there was a drought for such a long time and they had lost everything. The banks were knocking on the door. I looked at cattle and thought, the imperial life from England doesn’t work in our country. I thought, there’s got to be a better animal than this.”

Mrs Brisbane conducted a self-funded two-year study in which she wrote about the development of the camel industry in Queensland, which she published in 2009.

“The government was proposing a mandate to shoot the wild population of camels in Australia – they shot 120,000 camels and left them to rot in the desert. It was a $30 million project, the largest funded environmental project in Australian history.

“There were problems with wild camels, walking through fences and drinking out of all the waterholes. I thought, we just need to have another focus to manage them. When I wrote the study, one of the things my husband and I discussed was if we were going to go into the camel industry, dairy would be our focus.

“Financially it made sense – it’s a health product and there was a market for it.”

Camel milk has a different molecular structure to cow’s milk and is closest in composition to human milk. It contains less lactose, three times more iron and 10 times more vitamin C than cow’s milk, as well as

having antibacterial and probiotic qualities. It does not contain the whey proteins that cause dairy allergies.

“One of the things we recognised is that Australian camels are the only disease-free camels in the world. It also appealed to us ethically. We like the way you manage camels when you milk them. I certainly don’t have any opinion at all on how other people manage dairy animals; it’s not my business.

But I’m a bit of a sook and with camels, you don’t remove the babies from the mothers. We like that. Ethically, that sits well with us.”

While Mrs Brisbane is thrilled with the reception her products are receiving, the journey has not been without its challenges.

Compared with cow’s milk, it’s expensive.

You can’t milk a mother without her calf, which means it takes twice as much animal husbandry to produce each litre of milk.

Then there’s the issue of Australian tastes.

“Australians are really parochial,” she says.

“They’re also distrustful of people saying ‘it’s a health product’. But people who drink our milk love it and they always come back. It makes them feel so much better. I think we’re on the right track and we’re certainly gaining a reputation for what we’re doing.”

She’s says when the airport expansion is finished, it will open even more international markets. And after having spent 12 years in the outback, she knows she’s found home here on the Coast.

“I like space,” she says. “I didn’t want to live on a little tiny block in Brisbane. I’m interested in agribusiness and we have beautiful food on the Sunshine Coast. When you live in mining areas or western rural areas, all the food is trucked in. A lot of food is kept in cold storage for months before you get it and it’s really poor quality.

“The Sunshine Coast has amazing food.

We’re not far from the beach, we live near the mountains, we can go bushwalking and the people are relaxed, so the Sunshine Coast is the perfect lifestyle for us.”

WHEN KIDS SHOW US UP

I

have been pondering the big issues over the past week, like how early is too early to have happy hour? I’ve also been spending an unhealthy amount of time wondering how Cassandra from The Bachelor managed to go flying down a killer waterslide and keep her tiny bikini covering her private parts. Now, when I say tiny bikini, girls, I am talking basically a seatbelt.

Cass Wood opted for a tiny bit of black fabric to cover her chest and some black dental floss wrapped around her bare bottom. But the damn thing did not move. It did not even move when Cass went flying down the Tornado at Wet ‘n’ Wild and no doubt had water rushing into parts of her body that water should not rush into.

Pop culture has always been punctuated with iconic swimwear. Bo Derek and cornrows made for the perfect 10; Ursula Andress looked scorching hot as she sauntered from the ocean with a scuba belt around her flat stomach in Doctor No; and who can ever think of Baywatch without picturing Pamela Anderson in THAT red one-piece?

Sure, Cass on The Bachelor has a banging body, but the real intrigue was how the hell that bikini stayed on her body. If you do not know which girl Cass is, then let me fill you in on the plot. Poor old Cass is the bunny boiler of the show. The model is so in love with Nick Cummins she can hardly walk or talk or breath around him. This obsession (that is actually pretty much just old-

fashioned stalking) has resulted in car crash TV viewing; you cannot turn away. Cass was somehow even hoodwinked by those nasty producers to actually read out parts of her diary (yes, she keeps a daily handwritten diary just like the one I had in Year 4) proclaiming undying love for Nick IN FRONT OF HIM. It was awkward and I nearly died of embarrassment for her and for him. But was it captivating? You bet it was!

Summer is almost here, so it is time for us to invest in a swimsuit that flatters our body shape and can hold up and stay on in the ocean and in the pool. Now that is about as rare as a whole colony of unicorns. We all have a horror story about a top or bottom malfunction over the years. One of my first memories as a child was screaming with sadness when my brand-new crochet string bikini top fell off in the ocean and floated out to sea, never to be seen again. I loved that bikini with all my heart.

Togs are such a big part of our culture on the Coast and I have always loved buying a new pair of togs every summer. These days, I enjoy shopping for togs about as much as I enjoy walking on broken shards of glass to get to a four-hour cricket match in the middle of a blistering hot summer’s day. I have tried throwing money in the pursuit of the perfect togs, but promises of sucking in tummies and controlling wobbly thighs are just empty dreams. Which brings us back to that first pesky question: how early is too early for happy hour?

cabinet minister misleads parliament, blatantly and unequivocally lies to the house of our elected representatives. In doing so, he lies to the people of our nation.

Self-absorbed right-wing provocateurs are actively supported by members of our houses of parliament. Their special brand of divisiveness championed by our leaders and media, in the name of supporting our ‘inalienable’ right to free speech. Everyone has the right to be a bigot, they say.

There are no consequences. Just another day at the office.

A nine-year-old girl refuses to stand for the national anthem in a display of compassion for those she believes are not represented by the song for all Australians.

And everyone goes crazy.

There was the shadow minister for education labelling her a ‘brat’, calling for her suspension from school. A finer example of the approach to modern education will be hard to find. And a senator suggests the lass should be ‘kicked up the backside’. There’s nothing quite like our elected representatives promoting violence toward children, particularly in the shadow of a Royal Commission into the abuse of children.

Many held a disbelief that a child could

form her own view. ‘It must be her parents putting her up to it. Let children be children’, they said. Of course, there is no irony in the common refrain of conservatives lamenting the ‘good old days’, when children were ‘seen and not heard’.

The problem is, as we all know, children rarely listen or do as they’re told. Perhaps not surprisingly, from a very early age they form their own views of the world. They have an inherent sense of what is right and good. They are compassionate by their very

Sadly, they also learn from what they see in the behaviour of adults. And that’s where it all starts to go to the dogs. When our fearless leaders behave with duplicity; when they behave inappropriately without consequence, they set an example that self-interest trumps all. Why suffer the consequences of responsibility when you can do as you like?

Teaching our children they deserve to be heard, and actually belong, is surely the best way to ensure a better future for society.

Better yet, let our leaders remember, it’s not ‘do as I say, it’s do as I do’.

TRANSURBAN GROUP ON THE ROAD AGAIN

T

ransurban Group (TCL) is a well-known stock that has been listed on the Australian Stock Exchange since 1996 and is well favoured by our research team. TCL manages and develops urban toll road networks in Australia and the USA. TCL has recently been in the headlines after Sydney Transport Partners, a consortium led by Transurban, won the bidding for a 51 per cent stake in the New South Wales State Government’s WestConnex project with a $9.3 billion offer. WestConnex is a major $16.8 billion investment in Sydney’s road infrastructure, and is the largest urban road project currently under construction in Australia. The consortium comprises Transurban with 50 per cent, AustralianSuper with 20.5 per cent, the Canada Pension Plan

Investment Board with 20.5 per cent and the Abu Dhabi sovereign wealth fund Tawreed Investments with nine per cent. Approvals from the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission and the Foreign Investment Review Board have already been granted.

Transurban’s equity share of the purchase price is $4.1 billion, to be funded via a 10-for-57 rights issue at $10.80 a share, and placements at $10.85 a share to AustralianSuper and Tawreed Investments to raise $450 million and $150 million, respectively.

In Ord Minnett’s view, the Transurban-led consortium is the natural owner of the WestConnex stake given: 1) its existing interests in the M5 motorway and the broader Sydney toll-road network, which create likely revenue benefits and cost savings; 2) its accumulated proprietary knowledge of the Sydney metropolitan network, for example traffic and pricing data and tolling systems; and 3) its proven track record of working with industry and government partners to deliver critical infrastructure. That said, we are somewhat surprised by the price paid for the asset.

Based on the WestConnex tolling regime – and assuming it can achieve operating earnings margins similar to Transurban’s existing Sydney network (a margin we estimate at around 80 per cent) – we forecast

traffic forecasts would need to be almost 50 per cent higher than the New South Wales Government’s projections in order to generate a return greater than Transurban’s weighted average cost of capital.

Despite this, investors should, in our view, have confidence in Transurban’s traffic expectations given the enviable track record of its 40-strong team of forecasting experts.

The difference in forecasts may also be due to the State Government’s conservatism – which may not have included the benefits of future projects – and Transurban may have a more optimistic view of the take-up of automated vehicles, as well as Sydney’s economy more generally.

Infrastructure remains an attractive asset class for many investors, providing access to relatively predictable, growing cash flows, and within this asset class Transurban is a top-quartile performer.

Transurban’s significant development pipeline and management initiatives should allow it to continue growing toll revenue and operating earnings in the near term at a rate in excess of the local economies where it operates.

he local bar and restaurant scene is about to get a lot more interesting after Sunshine Coast Council announced changes to its planning scheme, which has been amended to allow for rooftop dining.

Tourism, Events and Sport portfolio councillor Jason O’Pray says the change enhances the region’s tourism offering, but we think it’s a win for locals too.

“This is a trend that has spread through bigger cities and urban surroundings,” Cr O’Pray says.

“These amendments allow residents and visitors to take advantage of the great weather and stunning views the Sunshine Coast is renowned for. Who wouldn’t want to relax and enjoy a drink or a meal from a rooftop overlooking Mooloolaba Beach? I think that would be a fantastic asset to our region.”

The allowance provided by the change will apply just to the areas in Maroochydore,

Mooloolaba, Alexandra Headland and Coolum. Cr O’Pray says the changes to the scheme aren’t drastic and are limited to tourism precincts.

“This is about prompting potential developers to consider these options in future applications because we think that’s something the community and visitors will really embrace.”

And developers have already started embracing the change. The Rooftop Bar, which is set to welcome its first diners in December, is located just off Duporth Avenue in Maroochydore and will offer 360-degree views. The space will be set up for functions and events, with a bar and restaurant able to cater for up to 200 people, seven storeys above the ground. The roof will also be retractable, so the space can be enjoyed no matter what the weather’s doing. Cheers to that!

Local actor Rowan Howard (pictured) has been treading the boards since he was a child, but it’s been a varied career trajectory that has led him back to the stage in his latest role as Daddy Warbucks in the musical Annie.

“I took some years away from acting whilst I was completing my carpentry apprenticeship and in the years that followed, although I would occasionally dabble here and there in the local theatre in Cairns, my hometown,” he says. “I have been lucky enough to have had some amazing opportunities.”

Those opportunities include various television roles in shows such as Harrow, Neighbours, Please Like Me and Wentworth.

He says he has long been an admirer of

Mad About Theatre, the company presenting Annie. “I knew they put on quality productions and I had been away from musical theatre for a long time.”

While his role as Daddy Warbucks gives him plenty of stage time, he’s inspired by the other actors in the company. “I just love watching the talent of the kids in this show.

Every time they do a scene I am in awe.

“This entire cast is incredible and all of them are just beautiful to work with.”

Audiences can expect a traditional show – Mr Howard says they are using the original script and music, but there are always little touches that individual cast members bring to each character that make it unique.

He’s encouraging locals to get out and see the show. “I think it’s important to remember that this is a locally produced show from a company that has national success. Most of these people all work and go to school right here on the Sunshine Coast and you would have to travel a long way to get a show as good as this in a metropolitan centre.”

It is quite an adventure that involves dangerous coyotes and a powerful cougar. Bella’s instinct and amazing sense of smell are vital if she wants to survive. As the story is told through the dog’s eyes, the writer chooses which feelings and information the dog processes. What comes across is the bond that can form between human and dog and the resulting love and companionship – something we dog lovers already know well. I did not find the novel unenjoyable, but I did find the underlying sentiment cloying at times and I felt the story went on a bit long.

STICKY VIETNAMESE CHICKEN WINGS INGREDIENTS • 1 kg chicken wings • 100g potato starch COATING SAUCE • 2 tablespoons fish sauce • 2 tablespoons sugar • 1 tablespoon chilli sauce (sriracha) • 2 tablespoons water • A few drops of sesame oil (optional) • Black pepper and shallots to garnish METHOD • Clean chicken wings and cut the tips, then shake dry.

• Coat the wings evenly with potato starch.

• Heat oil then deep fry wings until golden and crispy.

To prepare the coating sauce: • Mix all ingredients in a bowl.

• Heat sauce in a non-stick pan on low heat.

• Just before the sauce starts to bubble, throw in the wings.

• Turn heat on and toss the wings so they’re evenly coated. Keep tossing to avoid burning, until sauce is thickened.

• Shake pepper on wings and drop green shallots in.

SUNNY COAST BEST PERFORMER IN THE STATE If you take the time to look beyond sensationalist headlines about potential property crashes, the truth is reassuring.

P

icture this – you’re not that familiar with the Australian property market and one day you decide to do a quick search on Google and some news sites to see what’s happening. If you’ve jumped online in the past week or so, no doubt you’re imagining the bottom is falling out of the market and Australian property prices are headed for a nosedive. But you’d be wrong.

Unfortunately, it’s usually just Sydney and Melbourne markets that grab the headlines, and while things look pretty wobbly in those markets, on the Sunshine Coast, the sky is most certainly not falling in.

Just take a look at the latest figures from the Real Estate Institute of Queensland’s latest Market Monitor. The document outlines the state of play in Queensland’s various property markets, and it shows that most Queensland property markets are in good shape. It shows one important factor that many property commentators forget to point out – that each property market around the nation is very different to the next.

Michael Knights (pictured) from Horizon Property Alliance says, “If you’ve read a paper in the past six months, you’d be forgiven for thinking Australia’s property market is headed for Armageddon. [But] there is no such thing as a single Australian property market. Every state, every city and every suburb – right down to every street – has its own property cycle and great buying opportunities. Even different types of properties have their own cycles. Units, townhouses, houses, off-the-plan and land subdivisions all have their time in the sun and are on varying paths of price movement over a variety of timeframes.”

time in the sun seems to be our own. According to the REIQ’s Market Monitor, the property market in the Sunshine Coast Statistical Division, which includes the Coast and Noosa, is the state’s best performer in terms of median house price growth.

“Overall, Queensland’s property market continues to operate at two speeds. The south-east corner is performing well, with the Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast, Brisbane and Toowoomba growing consistently,” says REIQ CEO Antonia Mercorella.

Whether the news you’re reading is good or bad, if you want to really understand a property market, look beyond the soundbites and simple stats. And while median prices can be helpful, they certainly need to be read in context.

This is something property analyst Michael Matusik advises investors often. He says no one should look at median price alone, whether those figures are going up or down.

“When you see a ‘hot list’ for detached house price growth, ask yourself how have the figures been influenced by newly constructed houses and/or recent renovation activity?” he advises. “Another important factor is survey size. If you are going to use median house prices as a benchmark, then you need to have many hundreds, but preferably thousands, of sales to ensure a meaningful sample.

“We only use large areas – like a total local authority area – when using median values. And only then as a broad indicator. Nothing beats detailed sampling, comparing like with like and focusing on individual resales.”

Mr Matusik warns against getting caught up in the hype.

“The thing to realise is markets move in cycles – always have and always will,” adds Mr Knights. “Property values rise and momentum runs in response to positive drivers – population growth, low interest rates, rising employment numbers, high overseas and interstate migration – myriad factors combine to interact and create demand that’s outstripping supply.

“Markets will eventually soften as demand dries up a little and values retreat in response. Bad media follows, confidence is zapped, and buyers leave the market, while sellers get nervous about achieving sales. Prices and supply will eventually find their bottom where buyers will once again start to take notice. It is a cycle and it is repeating regardless of what newspapers, radios or TV say.”

A mother feeding her baby on the surface came up right beside us for 10 minutes.

Just sat down on my stand-up and enjoyed the show. I certainly was not complaining about this happening in public! But I must admit, the whales seem to be going wide this year, as I am not seeing many compared to last year.
