hat makes you happy? Chocolate? Relaxing by the beach? Spending time with family and friends? Perhaps something a little deeper – love, faith, self-belief and acceptance? This is the question we put to the community while researching this week’s feature story, and we were overwhelmed with the response. Within 24 hours, more than 500 Coast people had responded to deputy editor Leigh Robshaw’s callout on social media. The answers were wide, varied and in some cases, gave us a good laugh (case in point: “getting the USB stick in the port on the first try”). One theme to surface during our quest to find the answer was love and relationships. It was heartwarming and reassuring to know that even in this time of change, and with an ever-increasing reliance on technology, people still continue to value the importance of human connection. Interestingly, studies conducted around the world have indicated that these connections are the key to happiness, and longevity. Be sure to turn to page 10 to read the story. ALL FIRED UP Where do you live? The beautiful Sunshine Coast, 100 metres from the beach. First job? In a bakery. Whenever I smell fresh bread it takes me back. What are you currently working on? The launch of Venue 114 (formerly Lake Kawana Community Centre). The re-branding has given us the opportunity to be the dynamic, contemporary venue we have longed to be! Your family includes? I am so blessed. My wonderful mum and dad, sister, brother, my awesome husband and our two precious beach bubbas. First car? Mazda 323. I was stoked! It had roof racks for my surfboard and it was always full of my girlfriends as we cruised up or down the Coast every weekend. Favourite book? Lucky by Jackie Collins.

If your life was a book, what would be the title? Never Too Tall For High Heels. What are you reading now? Leadership, health and wellbeing books and children’s nursery rhymes every night.

The day I decided to defer uni, pack my bags and accept my ultimate dream job of working and living on beautiful Great Keppel Island. It is such a magical island. What achievement are you most proud of? Creating two beautiful healthy children. They are best of friends and have so much spunk and spirit. They make us laugh every day – we feel very blessed.

You are happiest when? I’m up early being active and at the beach, followed by laughs and a few wines on sunset. What frustrates you the most? Bullies. They need to be more accountable and called out on their bad behaviour.

How do you deal with your frustrations? Jump in the ocean, surround myself with positive, like-minded people and laugh out loud lots.

When was the last time you played sport and what was it? Exercise has always been a must and very important to me. I love exercising at sunrise watching the ocean.

If you could tell your 18-year-old self anything, what would it be? Your life truly does fly by so quickly. Live and love life to the fullest every day – don’t sweat the small stuff, be true to yourself, leave a positive footprint and enjoy the fabulous, fun journey.

Best advice you’ve been given? Be kind, always use your manners, take pride in your work and treat people the way you would like to be treated.

If you could have dinner with any three people, dead or alive, who would they be? Cameron Diaz, Pink and Turia Pitt – all such incredible women.

What is your favourite place on the Sunshine Coast and why? The beach. This is where I recharge. We are so lucky to live, work and play on the Sunshine Coast and still have the lush rainforest only 30 minutes away.

If you won $1 million, how would you spend it? Hire a massive cruise liner and steam around the gorgeous islands with my treasured family and friends. Beach time through the day and sensational parties at night. The rest I would spend on house renos and future holidays.

THE KEY TO HAPPINESS

What’s the secret to a happy life? My Weekly Preview has put that question to the experts and quite a few Sunshine Coast residents, and the answer is not only simple, but universal. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw.

he science of happiness has become a hot topic in recent years. Positive psychology is a relatively new research area that focuses on what makes life worth living – shifting the focus of psychology from managing mental illness to helping people thrive in life. Studies designed to discover the key to happiness have become incredibly popular.

The people who were the most satisfied in their relationships at age 50 were the healthiest at age 80.” It’s not wealth, fame, intelligence, good genes, beauty, social status, power or material possessions that keep us happy throughout our lives, the study revealed, but close, supportive, trusting relationships – and quality is more important than quantity. George Vaillant, who directed the study

Do you say, ‘now I’m old I can’t do that’, or ‘now I’m old I need to find another way to do that’? “Part of happiness in old age is staying engaged with life,” she says. “Finding something you like to do. It might be volunteering, craft, gardening, the men’s shed. It might be learning a new skill – you

WHAT THE RESEARCH SAYS One of the most famous studies in this field is the Harvard Study of Adult Development. Harvard’s longest study of adult life, it began in 1938, when scientists began tracking the health of 268 Harvard sophomores (secondyear students) during the Great Depression. They hoped the longitudinal study would reveal clues to leading healthy, happy lives. What they found surprised them. The study tracked the students from the classes of 1939 to 1944, in tandem with a second cohort of 456 disadvantaged youths who grew up in Boston between 1940 and 1945. The subjects were all male and continue to be studied to this day. After 80 years of tracking these men, they discovered what they say is the key to happiness: connection. In a TED Talk that has clocked up more than 10 million views on YouTube, the director of the 80-year study, Robert Waldinger, said good relationships are the key to health and happiness. “When we gathered together everything we knew about them at age 50, it wasn’t their middle-age cholesterol levels that predicted how they were going to grow old,” Mr Waldinger said on TED. “It was how satisfied they were in their relationships.

WHAT PSYCHOLOGISTS SAY Lecturer in psychology at the University of the Sunshine Coast, Dr Prudence Millear is interested in what makes for a happy old age. “My father recently died at 92 and three quarters,” she says. “He had a lot of zest, had young friends, was active, worked in his garden and the weekend before he died he was making marmalade. He was never an old person. “How do you see yourself? Do you see yourself as old and helpless or old and getting

can do that at whatever age you like. It’s finding something meaningful to do. It’s looking out, rather than looking in, and not losing that enthusiasm for life. I have to say, if you are unwell or in pain, it’s actually hard to do that. Pain and disability take away your focus on the outside. But some people say, ‘things are bad, but they could be worse’. “Looking outside yourself and being interested in other people maintains your relationships. All those things will allow you to keep a hope for the future. To be curious about the world, at whatever age, is an absolute treasure.” Again, it all comes back to relationships

and connection, and Dr Millear says one of the keys to happiness in old age is knowing you spent time nurturing your relationships with your children when you were younger. “Kids need to know their parents love and care about them and the way they know that is they spend time with them,” she says. “As long as you are with them and you are present and you’re not on your phone, children then go, ‘my parents actually care about me. They’ve looked me in the eye and they’ve listened to me and been present with me.’” But Dr Millear warns that parents who do too much for their children are actually hindering their happiness. “Parents who are doing everything for their kids are denying them the joy of doing something hard,” she says. “Look at people who win Olympic gold medals. The look on their face is intense, deep satisfaction because they worked their arses off and they won. They have earnt the joy, earnt the happiness.” The deep joy in a hard-won success and the fulfilment that comes from taking responsibility for one’s life are more enduring than the state of happiness, which is fleeting, she says. Her words echo those of Canadian psychologist and academic Dr Jordan Peterson. His book 12 Rules for Life was published in January and has sold more than two million copies. Dr Peterson believes happiness is a pointless goal, and taking responsibility for your life is a more attainable and rewarding goal. “Happiness is done in at the first harsh blow life deals you,” he says in one of his myweeklypreview.com.au

You can’t boil it down to a simple dimension, happiness versus unhappiness. “You might compare the difference between elevator music and a symphony. The symphony isn’t happier than Muzak, it’s deeper and more profound. That’s the right metaphor for life, not happiness but depth and profundity.”

“I completely agree with him,” Dr Millear says. “If you think about the Buddhists, they say life is suffering. Life is ephemeral, there is too much that can happen to you. “It’s not the pursuit of happiness, it’s the pursuit of meaningful activities that makes you happy as you go along. If you’re living this life and all you’re doing is selfishly pursuing the positive, it denies the fact life is pretty rubbish sometimes. Try changing your focus to living your life well, living your life in a way that is honourable and worthy.”

WHAT THE COMMUNITY SAYS “What do you think is the key to happiness?” We asked this question on a local Facebook community board* and received 570 comments in 24 hours. The answers that came up multiple times were gratitude, giving, not caring about what others think of you, low expectations of others, love, self-worth, good health, money and pets. On a lighter note, beer, wine, cheese and chocolate were also popular responses. In analysing why the question struck a chord, Dr Millear says it tapped into our need for connection and sharing. “To be able to share brings deep satisfaction in life,” she says. “Everybody has an opinion on the key to happiness – it’s not an academic issue. “I think the really nice thing about these responses is that it shows you can find happiness in many places. It doesn’t have to be this amazing thing – it can sometimes be something so small as finding the kids didn’t eat all of the chocolate.” Here’s a snapshot of the responses: Natalie Alexander, Alexandra Headland: “Getting through hardship and then finding joy in simply being free of life’s hard yards. I can honestly say I have had to teach myself to appreciate all the little things in life, and although life is definitely not what I want or asked for, I am thankful for the family and friends around me. Change the negatives into positives somehow. Never dwell because life is precious and we only get this shot so live it. Always give, always love and don’t judge. ART PRIZE WINNERS TO BE ANNOUNCED ON AUGUST 31 The Sunshine Coast Art Prize 2018 winners will be unveiled at Caloundra Regional Gallery on August 31. The best of the best athletes from around the country will flock to Mooloolaba to compete in the Ironman 70.3 Sunshine Coast on Sunday, August 26. In one of the fastest growing triathlon series in the world, athletes will complete a 1.9-kilometre swim, a 90-kilometre bike ride and a 21.1-kilometre run in the endurance race that takes in some stunning Sunshine Coast scenery. The highly-anticipated race will kick off at 6.10am with the first competitors expected to cross the finish line around 9.50am. Ironman 70.3 Sunshine Coast provides a fitting warm up for those athletes heading over to Hawaii to take on the Ironman World Championship in October.

COAST’S FIRST PRIVATE EMERGENCY CENTRE The Sunshine Coast now has 24/7 access to the region’s first private medical emergency centre, with the Buderim Private Hospital opening its $4-million custom-designed emergency facility earlier this week. Buderim Private Hospital general manager Wallis Westbrook says the much-anticipated service will provide the Coast community with greater access and wider choice of emergency healthcare. The emergency centre’s experienced emergency physicians will provide specialist care for medical emergencies 24 hours, seven days a week, including all public holidays, and will be available to those with and without private health cover.

Two interstate athletes have claimed the men’s and women’s titles at the 7 Sunshine Coast Marathon. More than 6000 people from serious competitors to casual joggers participated in the weekend’s events at Alexandra Headlands, which included the 42.2-kilometre marathon, 21.1-kilometre half-marathon and a number of smaller two, five- and 10-kilometre community events. Melbourne’s Chris Rancie claimed the marathon crown on Sunday. The 34-year-old finished in two hours, 27 minutes and 23 seconds and for the women, it was Sydney’s Eleanor Goldrick, who crossed the line first at a time of two hours, 59 minutes and 25 seconds.

SOLAR PROGRAM EXPANDING ACROSS COAST Sunshine Coast Council has started installing 30 kilowatts of solar panels to the roof of the Nambour waste transfer station, further expanding its rooftop solar program and building on the success of the solar farm. Economic Development and Innovation Portfolio Councillor Steve Robinson says council is committed to its vision of becoming the most sustainable region in Australia. “Four of council’s eight waste transfer stations already feature rooftop solar installations, with arrays added to Buderim, Witta and Beerwah earlier this year,” he says. “We will add a further 60 kilowatts of solar power across Nambour and Caloundra this financial year, with Caloundra completed earlier this month.” myweeklypreview.com.au

PLAYING BY HER OWN RULES Australian actress Deborah Mailman is back on the small screen in Channel Nine’s new series Bite Club. She took time out of her busy schedule to chat to My Weekly Preview about her favourite roles, her family and her future. WORDS: Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane.

ith a smile to rival that of Julia Roberts, a magnetic presence and warm personality, Deborah Mailman has been a staple on Australian film and television screens since 1998. But in her latest role, as Superintendent Anna Morton in the Channel Nine series Bite Club, she is tackling the crime drama genre for the first time. The Wollongong mother-of-two tells My Weekly Preview she is a die-hard fan of Law and Order: SVU and to take on this new role was a dream come true. Filming for the series, which debuted on August 15 and will continue for eight weeks, wrapped up in Manly in December, giving Ms Mailman, husband Matthew Coonan and children Henry, 10, and Oliver, eight, an opportunity to visit the Sunshine Coast in July for some rest and relaxation, and to connect with Mr Coonan’s parents on the Noosa north shore. “When it comes to my [Bite Club] character, professionally she hasn’t put a foot wrong and has worked so hard to get to where she is, even though there are some who think she is not competent enough to be in that position. “But personally, she is getting it all wrong… she just happens to find her younger work mate incredibly attractive and although she’s a smart woman and she knows how stupid she is in getting herself in that situation, she can’t help herself. It’s an interesting dilemma to play with,” Ms Mailman says. Picking up scattered pieces of Lego from the floor of her New South Wales home while conducting the interview, she admits she never had a grand design for how her career would play out when she set her sights on acting at the age of 16. But through sheer hard work, spending a decade on the theatre circuit before her television debut, Ms Mailman became the first Aboriginal actress to win the Australian Film Institute (AFI) Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role for the 1998 film Radiance. She went on to win four more AFI awards in film and television. She is well known for her character Kelly Lewis on the successful series The Secret Life of Us and later played Cherie Butterfield in Offspring, for which she won two Logies for Most Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series in 2002 and 2004. While both Kelly and Cherie hold a firm place in her heart (she played the characters for six and four years respectively) Ms Mailman says taking on the role of Eddie Mabo’s wife Bonita in the film Mabo changed her life.

The acclaimed film chronicled the story of the Torres Strait Islander who left school at age 15 and spearheaded the High Court challenge that overthrew the fiction of terra nullius, or ‘nobody’s land’. “It wasn’t just a role, the project meant so much to me and to all of us,’’ she says. “To play such an extraordinary woman was daunting at first, but it was such an incredible experience. “A beautiful thing that came out of that production is the relationship I now have with the Mabo family. They have the Logie I won that year [2013]. I gave it to Bonita and we are really dear friends.” Ms Mailman is a proud Kalkadoon (Mount Isa) woman

and has played numerous other powerful Indigenous roles in television series including Redfern Now and Cleverman as well as acclaimed films Rabbit-Proof Fence, Bran Nue Dae, Oddball, The Sapphires and Paper Planes. She says while Australia still has a long way to go in regards to Aboriginal affairs, the film and television industry has evolved considerably in the past 25 years. “Way back in the early ’90s, there were hardly any Indigenous Australians on television, and now we are represented in dramas, comedies, documentaries, and a range of genres,” she says. “The Indigenous unit of Screen Australia has been instrumental in seeing this happen and a lot of hard work, advocacy and investment has done it. Redfern Now, which was written, directed and produced by Indigenous Australians, was a real game-changer in showing what is possible for us and for the industry as a whole. “I think it empowers us all when we do see our mob doing different roles and succeeding within the industry. We are now in a powerful place because we can be authors of our own stories, which was never the case, and the result is an incredibly diverse range of stories across all genres, even sci-fi in Cleverman.” While Ms Mailman is excited to see how viewers react to her latest show, she is now working on a couple of passion projects, including writing a play adapted from her cousin Keelen Mailman’s book The Power of Bones, serving her second term on the Sydney Opera House Trust, and spending as much time as she can with her beloved boys. “I love this job, I really do, despite all of its hardships and the unpredictability of it,” she says. “But while it might look glamorous, it isn’t rosy. Often as actors we tend to be at the mercy of the industry, so it was more making sure that I was saying yes to as many different opportunities as I possibly could and you could never plan for what roles could come up. “It is always hard to say no as an actor, but as your career progresses, it becomes just as important what you say no to as what you say yes to. Becoming a mother definitely made it easier for me to say no because my boys became my priority, and I remember one year working back-to-back and it killed me as I rarely got to see them. “When work requires me to be everywhere else, I have to assess now how much time it will take me away from my boys because that year I was away, it really broke my heart and I won’t do it again.”

WOMEN CELEBRATING WOMEN

From sports star, to trailblazing politician and now author, Nova Peris has achieved a lot, and she’s sharing her story with local audiences. WORDS: Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane.

hen Nova Peris was compiling her latest book Nova: Finding My Voice, a sense of sadness washed over her. The book is a compilation of the speeches she gave during her time as Australia’s first Aboriginal woman elected to Federal Parliament. While its creation gave her the chance to relive some of the heartfelt and passionate speeches she gave in her time as a member of the Northern Territory Labor senate, one of the last speeches she made before deciding not to recontest the seat due to family reasons brought a tear to her eye. “It was around Reconciliation Week in May of 2016 and I recited elements of senator Neville Bonner’s maiden speech that he gave in 1971, and 45 years on, when you look at where Aboriginal affairs are at, I’m still talking about the things he was championing back then and not much has changed,” she tells My Weekly Preview. (Mr Bonner was the first indigenous Australian elected to federal government.) Ms Peris moved to Maroochydore in 1989 and lived there for 18 months to play for a local hockey club, and she will return next week for the first time since then for an author talk as part of the Horizon Festival. Ms Peris made history as the first Aboriginal woman to win an Olympic gold medal as part of the Hockeyroos at the 1996 Olympic Games. She then switched to sprinting and represented Australia in the 1998 Commonwealth Games, winning the 200-metre sprint and the 4 x 100-metre team relay before going on to the 2000 Olympic Games. She says the seed for a tilt at politics was planted in 2004, but her son was only 18 months old at the time, so she decided to pass. But the thought was never far from her mind, so when the opportunity arose again, Ms Peris jumped right in. “When you get asked to serve, or your put your hand up, you feel extremely passionate about it,” she says. “I found it hard going in through the opposition at the time, but I went in with good intentions to shine a massive big spotlight on what I had seen through my lifetime and when I got in there, it wasn’t all it’s cut out to be.” Ms Peris calls her latest book an “appetite builder” for

Nova Peris after winning the women’s 200-metre final at the 1998 Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur her upcoming autobiography, which will pick up where her 2003 release Nova: My Story left off. Finding My Voice also features the speeches of wellknown figures around the world who have inspired Ms Peris’ journey and motivated her to have the courage to speak out on the topics she is passionate about. No longer a politician, Ms Peris now works for Vicsport and is helping the Essendon Football Club establish an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Sports Hall of Fame. Her children are following in her sporting footsteps, with 14-year-old son Jack a two-time national 400-metre champion in the under 15s and under 16s. He was also recently named the NAIDOC Sportsperson of the Year, becoming the youngest recipient to date.

here we were on our girls’ weekend, with freedom to do anything and talk about anything and where did our conversation turn? It turned to a dark topic that has gripped me with fear and panic. We sat in our girl circle of trust and in hushed tones discussed a very big problem in our families at the moment: the fact we have not been able to secure the entire set of Coles Mini Collectables. My kids have made me feel like a failure because I can’t find the damn chocolate milk mini to complete our set. Now if you do not know about these minis, then you are simply going to think I have finally lost my mind. They are the work of the devil. Our lives seem to revolve around collecting the entire set. My kids’ friends have the complete set. I know this because there has been a lot of smug Facebook bragging about the fact. It seems to be a dimly disguised dig at other, clearly incompetent parents such as myself who are yet to reach the goal of slotting 30 minis into their little spaces. My kids are now begging me to go food shopping and I have joined the feeding frenzy trying to complete our set. It was all warm and fuzzy as we first stood there like The Brady Bunch and tore open our little bags to reveal Nutella and nappies. Then we got the adorable Tim Tams. Fast forward a few weeks and we are more like the Lannister family from Game Of Thrones. Nanny tried to ask for a few extra minis

at the checkout and was refused. Nanny needed a stiff scotch that night. I have now succumbed to texting and talking to friends about swapping doubles to complete the set. Chat in the school carpark revolves solely around scoring. And our children look to us in hope every day we will be victorious before the sun sets. Hundreds of Facebook pages have been set up for swapping and giving away doubles of the minis with names like ‘Coles Little Shop Minis Group Australia’. Some have tens of thousands of adult members. I dared to forget to ask for the stupid things last week after a shop and my four-year-old actually said to me when I got home: “Go and stand in the naughty corner!” before he burst out crying. I did not even shop at Coles before the Mini Revolution of 2018. Let’s face it: we are part of a bold marketing ploy by Coles. The little toys are not exactly environmentally friendly and they will lie discarded on the stairs in a few months. And now Coles has announced there are 700 incredibly rare ‘red hands’ available – as in those big red gloves people wear in the Coles ads. My family still needs the damn chocolate milk until we can celebrate glory, but if anyone tells them about the elusive red hands, I swear I may lose it. Good luck collecting everyone: may the odds be always in your favour and remember to celebrate being a stellar parent when you complete that set.

milestone birthday in our household this week – my eldest son turned the big one-oh. It got me thinking about what advice I should give him as he leaves the security of single digit years – after all, he is now closer to his future driver’s licence, than the days of being pushed in a pram. But really, what could I tell him that he doesn’t already know, or he’ll need to find out by himself, and who’s to say that anything I could pass on would be what he needs to hear? No, I think a better course of action is to thank him for everything he has taught me, and all the lessons he’s sure to deliver in the coming years. Thank you for teaching me I am not the centre of the universe, and why the hell would I want to be anyway? Thank you for teaching me cuttlefish are colour blind but can change themselves to just about any colour to camouflage against predators, and the many other fantastic facts you pass on. Thank you for teaching me you can love someone with all your heart, and love his brother exactly the same amount. Thank you for teaching me if you swear in front of your children, regardless of how irregularly, they will repeat it, and at the most embarrassing moment possible. Thank you for teaching me about being true to yourself and not worrying a damn about what other people may think.

RIO – TIME TO ACCUMULATE!

io Tinto (RIO) shares have fallen more than 10 per cent from their peak this year. The stock is still outperforming the S&P/ASX 200 Index this year, but the pullback now sees it lagging BHP Billiton, as well as the broader resources sector, on performance. We think there are good reasons to own, and even accumulate, Rio Tinto, at these levels. In June, we noted valuation constraints as a reason for removing Rio Tinto from our preferred picks. Since then, Rio Tinto’s share price has fallen more than 10 per cent from its peak, and underperformed BHP and the broader resources sector. A three-to-four per cent earnings miss at its results due to higher than expected costs in the aluminium division, fewer surprises around balance sheet de-gearing and capital

Our reasons for seeing Rio Tinto as an attractive option in the mining space are as follows: • Excess capital – This means share buybacks in both Australia and the UK are likely. Rio Tinto’s strategy is now more about value than volume, i.e. pursuing more measured volume growth of around two per cent per annum, so as not to undermine prices.

The stock is trading on a forward price-to-earnings ratio of 12.6 times, well below its historical average, and it is also at a 17 per cent discount to BHP. • Potential for broker forecasts to be revised higher – If iron ore prices remain around current levels, then in our view there is a likelihood of earnings upgrades, which could be expected to push the price higher. • China – The government in this key market is easing policy in response to trade concerns. Already there has been two cuts to the bank Reserve Requirement Ratio (totalling 1.50 percentage points), as well as an expansion of tax deductions for corporates. We expect these stimulus measures to be expanded upon in the current half year. FIRST SAND FOR AIRPORT Sunshine Coast Council’s largest infrastructure project has reached another milestone with The Nile River delivering the first sand for the foundation for Sunshine Coast Airport’s new runway. The Nile River, which is a trailing suction hopper dredge, will become a familiar sight as it undertakes its work to deliver sand from the Spitfire Realignment Channel in Moreton Bay. The bright green, 150-metre long vessel, will make up to three trips a day, seven days a week until the end of October. At the beginning of each trip it will lower two suction devices to the sea bed in an existing sand extraction area and vacuum up around 12,000 cubic metres of loose sand. The vessel then makes the 72-kilometre trip to connect with a pump-out facility off Marcoola. The sand is pumped along four-and-a-half kilometres of pipeline in place on the sea bed and underneath the David Low Way, around the existing runway and out to the sand containment area.

espite being an iconic Australian band, Regurgitator bass player Ben Ely likens the group to the “weird nerd in the corner doing something different while all the cool kids are in the middle of the room”. TODD’S TALES Todd Widdicombe has found love – a new beer from Stone and Wood with the poetic name of Cloud Catcher. It won’t disappoint. Pale ale: you’re a trendy know-it-all with a penchant for manicured facial hair and ’80s pop culture. Lemon infused beer: you prefer Hugh Jackman as the Boy From Oz, rather than as Wolverine. Not that there’s anything wrong with that. And finally, fully imported German bier: you have all the class of James Bond but sadly, the habits of a drunk aunty at Christmas. Stout: you have grown thick skin and a lush manly beard and could possibly win a wrestling contest with a small, yet angry black bear, or perhaps a Peruvian Olympic weightlifter, depending on her size and fitness of course. CHERMOULA BASTED LAMB RUMP Head chef Benjamin Limpus from The Grill at The Sebel Pelican Waters Golf Resort and Spa says the inspiration for this dish came from a group collaboration. “When The Grill introduces new menu items, the kitchen team have a brainstorming session with each member providing influence and ideas,’’ he says. This particular dish was created by the senior members of the brigade, each providing one element that complements the creative influence of the others. “This dish is unique to our venue. Using a mix of new and traditional cooking methods, from slow cooking to chargrilling, this dish covers many areas of gastronomy.” The parsley and confit garlic-based chermoula enhances the earthy flavours of the lamb. It’s accompanied by the subtleness of the pulled lamb shoulder and sage tones of the croquette. The burnt carrot and orange puree provides a fresh and zesty element, and the freshness of the heirloom vegetables administers crunch and colour contrast.

FOOD FANATIC James Clarke has been a chef for 33 years and became the Club Kawana head chef in 2004. He enjoys the challenge of being creative every day with different ingredients, coming up with fresh ideas for menus. He says it’s the reactions of customers after they eat his meals that he loves the most. “I love seeing the smile on customers’ faces as they leave satisfied after a meal you have prepared for them. That’s a great feeling,” he says. For the home cook, Mr Clarke recommends checking seasoning and tasting as you go. “Also, have a nice sharp knife and always work clean. A clean and organised kitchen makes cooking a lot easier.”

FIRST-HOME BUYER PARTICIPATION HITS SIX-YEAR HIGH A slow down in price growth and ongoing low interst rates has favoured new buyers aiming to get into the property market.

he Housing Industry Association has declared first-home buyer participation in the property market has reached a six-year high. HIA senior economist Shane Garrett says the first-home buyer share of owner-occupier housing loans increased again during June 2018 and is now at its highest since late 2012. The Australian Bureau of Statistics housing finance figures for June 2018 indicate that first-home buyers accounted for 18.1 per cent of owner-occupier home loans during the month. “Over the past 12 months, the volume of first-home buyer owner-occupier loans has increased by 11.4 per cent,” Mr Garrett says. “In recent years, record numbers of newly built apartments have also come on stream. In terms of design and price point, many of these are particularly suited to first-home buyers and have made the purchase of their first home possible.” Mr Garrett says the slow down in dwelling price growth over the past year and ongoing low interest rates has also been favourable for those seeking to get a foot in the door. “In contrast, the value of housing investor loans hit a five-year low during June and has declined by 22.4 per cent since its peak at the

beginning of last year,” he says. Investors have been facing increased challenges in participation in the housing market due to recent policy and regulatory changes and Mr Garrett says with Australia’s population hitting 25 million, any obstacles to housing supply must be avoided so the industry can meet our future housing needs. HIA deputy managing director Graham Wolfe says the 25 million milestone has been reached sooner than predicted and the focus should be firmly on affordable housing for

future generations. “In 2002, the first Intergenerational Report estimated that Australia would reach a population of 25.3 million in 2042,” he says. “The 2007 report suggested this target would be reached in 2027. By 2010, our population was 22 million and the IGR estimated the population would exceed 25 million by 2020. But it has happened now. “Clearly growth has occurred faster than the experts predicted. The latest Intergenerational Report (2015) now predicts

that Australia’s population will reach 39.7 million by 2055.” Mr Wolfe says we must find a way to keep new, affordable homes coming into the market to ensure supply is maintained across the country. “To do otherwise would see Australia continue a pattern of undersupply, ongoing affordability challenges and further reductions in home ownership rates,” he says. “In 2016 Australia built a record number of 230,000 new homes. We will need to maintain this rate of annual supply across all states for the next 30 years if we are to keep pace with population growth. “We know that the excessive cost of supplying new housing lies at the core of the affordability challenge, with almost 40 per cent of a new house and land package being made up of taxes and charges, but equally a stable supply chain underpins greater certainty in affordability.” Mr Wolfe says cooperation from all three tiers of government is essential to keeping the housing market buoyant. “A strong housing sector at a time of population growth not only means more affordable houses, it means more jobs, and a more prosperous economy overall,” he says.

So Julian bummed out of Tahiti. It was a cruel way to go out – no waves with 17 minutes to go. You would have thought the ocean would have given him something. Now they move on to the wave pool situation. I guess it will be like watching ice skating with no variables. Big yawn fest! It should suit the Brazilians. As for waves this weekend, Sunday is looking the goods so enjoy what you can. Sadly, it has not been the best winter and with the NE winds starting soon it could be a cruel few months ahead. But let’s hope I am wrong!
