Well, while both of these things will play a part in the weekend ahead, my main focus will be on family. As we grow older, we have our own children, create our own families, loved ones come into and leave our lives. Priorities ebb and flow with the changes within our own environments. So, in our house, 2017 will be all about family – creating memories, sharing laughter, appreciating the moments we have together and celebrating how lucky we are to live in this part of the world. Being a good husband, dad and councillor and looking for continuous improvement. From the council angle, the Coast has a lot going for it with plenty of activity at the moment, so it’s a good time to be involved with the region’s major projects. In this council term I have the honour of being the deputy mayor. The position has various extra responsibilities to that of my councillor role but in essence, it’s about being where the mayor can’t be. Whether that is chairing a meeting, attending functions in his place, presiding at citizenship ceremonies or doing official duties when a new facility is opened.

Giving up piano lessons in grade six. I wanted to get to school to play cricket. Now my body can’t handle cricket and I still can’t play a musical instrument.

WHY DO YOU LIVE HERE? I thought the Sunshine Coast was the best place in the world when I was a younger fella, and after growing up and seeing the world, I now know it’s the best place in the world.

FAVOURITE PLACE?

Apart from my kids, it was when I was elected onto the New South Wales Rugby League (now NRL) Players Association in 1989 while playing for the Roosters. We took on the NSWRL when they wanted to introduce a Players’ Draft. The Draft’s guidelines showed little regard for the players and we ultimately won a hard fought legal battle through the courts. It was little wonder that Super League started a few years later, as the League’s power brokers in those days never properly acknowledged the value that the players created for the game.

He has been watching the Coast grow for decades and has a highly optimistic view on our future commercial prosperity and cultural identity. WORDS: Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane.

magine a city where footloose businesses are thriving and a wave of entrepreneurial ‘hipsters’ are attracted to the strength of a flourishing region to launch their innovative startups. A city where established industry leaders move in to expand their growing empires and the influx of people, who wish to live a healthy lifestyle, fuels the cutural, artistic and sporting spheres and creates an enviable work and lifestyle balance. According to renowned demographer Bernard Salt, this is what the Sunshine Coast will look like in just over two decades. Salt’s report, The Activated City: Imagining the Sunshine Coast in 2040, found 550,000 people will be living in the region and it will become the home of nimble businesses, techsavvy Millennials and young families in a major transformation set to reinvent the leisurely seaside image that has been the Coast trademark for decades. The report was commissioned by SunCentral which is driving the construction of the new CBD on a 53-hectare greenfield site in the heart of Maroochydore. But far from being an outsider looking in, Melbourne-based Salt has been a regular on the Coast since the mid-1980s. “I have been interested in the Sunshine Coast for pretty much all of my career,” he says. “My first time travelling interstate for business was in 1985, when I was commissioned to do a feasibility study into demographics for the Sunshine Plaza before it was developed. “I have been coming back to the Sunshine Coast throughout the years and have worked from Caloundra, Maroochydore, Coolum and Noosa, so I am very familiar with the suburbs and how the demographics have changed over the years. “My wife and I often spend a weekend at Noosa, along with half of Melbourne I’m sure, and we have been holidaying there with the kids for more than 10 years.” Salt says the Sunshine Coast has really come into its own in the past decade and is now positioning itself to reap the rewards of a more connected community. “To be blunt, 20 to 30 years ago the Sunshine Coast was quite straggly. It was a spindly collection of villages loosely connected by the Bruce Highway, the David Low Way, and the Nicklin Way. It has now filled out, densified and got critical mass and has some real form to it,” he says. Salt says the establishment of the University of the Sunshine Coast two decades ago was a “game changer” for the region and there has been further activation with the Sunshine Coast University Hospital now operational and the planned expansion of the

Sunshine Coast Airport set to open the region up to Asian markets from 2020. He says the final piece of the puzzle is the new CBD, which will generate significant economic and social shifts. “In a lifestyle city like the Sunshine Coast, business districts can grow in a haphazard way and cause infighting between suburbs over who has dominance. But the beauty of SunCentral’s new Maroochydore CBD is that it is clearly defined and you can reimagine the space from scratch,” he says. “It is a tremendous opportunity and it will unlock the Sunshine Coast and fuse it together. SunCentral is one of the most exciting, boldest projects I’ve seen in regional Australia, and it’s the right thing for the Coast. You can imagine the best hotels, the best streetscapes and when you put all of that together, there will be a rise of innovation and small business.” Salt says the Coast will distinguish itself from other cities of its size and by the sheer volume of small businesses it has. “It imbues the Coast with an

entrepreneurial, independently-minded spirit,” he says. “Sunshine Coasters are not ‘me too’ people, everyone’s got an opinion and that’s terrific. The region will harness that to create and grow the businesses of the future, which will be as diverse as construction, leisure business and hotels, health and lifestyle and technology. “As the Coast gets bigger, we will not see more of the same. There will be an articulated culture, not just retirees, commuters and lifestylers.” Salt says a hipster culture will be fuelled by young people in their 20s and 30s, who move to the region as they become disenchanted with Sydney’s unaffordability and they seek a lifestyle location to begin their careers or start up new businesses. “The results will be a Sunshine Coast that is not just bigger, but also younger, more highly educated and entrepreneurial.” Salt says businesses that can operate from any location will be attracted by the myweeklypreview.com.au

Bernard Salt says the new Maroochydore CBD will unite the Sunshine Coast like never before technology, lifestyle, cost and connectivity, while university-educated Millennials will team up with “second generation CEOs”, baby boomers who have retired to the Coast to kick off new businesses. In turn, this will see more parents investing in the community, safe in the knowledge their children will not be forced to move to pursue their chosen careers. Despite the overall positive way in which he paints the future of the Coast, Salt says he

has no doubts there will be challenges. “We are a young country and a growing country and all of that is epitomised on the Sunshine Coast, but overall the foundations are being laid to allow corporates, national and international, to establish a substantial office presence in a lifestyle location in a campus-style office, which is pretty much the way they do things in Silicon Valley, with all the amenity of a CBD that is minutes away from an international airport, minutes away

from the beach, the university, the billiondollar hospital and hopefully all of this will be threaded together with light rail.” To maintain the predicted growth from 350,000 residents to 550,000 by 2040, the Coast will have to build the equivalent of a new suburb every 14 months and a new school every two years, as well as keep abreast with new infrastructure. Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson says the region is up to the challenge. “We have always taken the view that we will shape the future, not simply react to it,” he says. “Our Regional Economic Development Strategy sets out a bold but achievable plan to build a $33 billion economy by 2033, with 100,000 new jobs in high-value industries and household incomes above the Queensland average. “The creation of an entirely new CBD is one of the ways in which we are setting this new course for the Coast. Bernard Salt describes the new CBD as the ‘missing link’ that will transform the Coast and deliver jobs and growth for decades to come. He is absolutely right.”

SunCentral Maroochydore was established to oversee design and delivery of the new city centre and since expressions of interest for lots in the core CBD precincts opened last year, we’ve received many exciting responses from the private sector. We are currently considering submissions for Stage One, proposing commercial and mixed use building projects with a construction cost of over $400 million and look forward to successful contract announcements in coming months. NAMBOUR SPLASH PARK DRAFT CONCEPT PLANS ENDORSED A splash pad, water spray elements and waterslides are some of the inclusions proposed in the Nambour Splash Park Feasibility Study that have been endorsed by the Sunshine Coast Council. One of the key recommendations identified in the Nambour Activation Plan, endorsed by the council in 2015, was the investigation of a Nambour splash park and leisure corridor. Otium Planning Group has been commissioned to undertake the feasibility study and Division 10 councillor Greg Rogerson says there is no doubt the community is keen to see the Nambour Aquatic Centre Precinct revitalised. Funding for the detailed design works will be put forward for consideration in the 2017/18 capital works budget.

BRISBANE ROAR PLAYER MAKES A SURPRISE VISIT TO KIDS Brisbane Roar W-League player Mackenzie Arnold dropped in on Nambour Yandina United’s K3 Coaching, much to the delight of the NYU junior squad. The visit was secured by long-term sponsor the Nambour RSL Club and official Brisbane Roar partner Pauls Milk. QLD RURAL WOMAN OF THE YEAR WINNER Gourmet Garden global innovation manager Jacqui Wilson-Smith intends to use her new title as Queensland Rural Woman of the Year to help fund an innovative online training platform for rural industries to access a design led thinking approach to solving problems in their businesses. With her $10,000 bursary winnings, Wilson-Smith wants to launch a learning platform, called Design Thinking, which will enable the creation of virtual communities where rural businesses can collaborate, learn how to speed up the pace of innovation, reduce risks and create business growth.

The beginning of a new era was celebrated at Maroochy Beach Gymnastics earlier this week as the first sod was turned on the $1.75 million building expansion project. The 40-year-old club has almost 1000 members, with more than 300 regularly on the waiting list, and is projected to surpass 2000 members by 2020. The Sunshine Coast Council is keen to attract Commonwealth Games Athletes and this upgraded facility is already drawing international interest.

USC CELEBRATES FIRST LAW GRADUATES The University of the Sunshine Coast celebrated the graduation of its first law students at an intimate reception. The 10 students involved were among the first cohort welcomed to the Six of the 10 Bachelor of Laws (Graduate Entry) graduates with USC Law School Head of USC Law School Professor Pamela O’Connor when it opened in 2014 and will each graduate with a Bachelor of Laws (Graduate Entry), an accelerated program designed to fast-track a career in law.

BETTER WEATHER BRINGS EASTER VISITORS TO THE COAST Tourism operators are preparing for a busier second week of school holidays. WORDS: Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane.

x-tropical cyclone Debbie may have rattled a few potential visitors enough to keep them away from the Sunshine Coast during the first week of the Easter school holidays, but tourism operators are preparing for a much stronger week ahead. Visit Sunshine Coast CEO Simon Latchford says several operators reported some cancellations and “softening” in the first week of the holidays as a result of the heavy rain following Debbie, but Coast businesses are projecting a positive message that the region is largely unaffected, still accessible and open for business. “We are certainly looking stronger during the second week, particularly over the Easter long weekend. We are fortunate the Sunshine Coast weather is more like what southerners would consider ‘summer’ and there is also still excellent availability along with good deals for people who have left things to the last moment,” he says. Visitors and residents alike will be treated to a host of free and family-friendly events, including the Kenilworth Cheese, Wine & Food Fest on Easter Saturday and the Ocean Street World Festival being held on Easter Sunday and many of the libraries, galleries

and attractions including Australia Zoo, Aussie World, the Ginger Factory, Sea Life, Sunshine Castle and Sunshine Coast Recreation Centre are putting on Easter school holiday activities. According to Tourism Research Australia, the drive market continues to inject the largest chunk of funds into the local economy, with almost 5.9 million day trip visitors hitting the region in the 12 months to December 2016 and spending $622.2 million. AIN’T NO MOUNTAIN HIGH ENOUGH Rhys Greedy is taking on a new mountain to raise money for the Queensland Ambulance Service Legacy Foundation. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw.

week before his 21st birthday, Rhys Greedy wasn’t celebrating like most people his age – he was facing the battle of his life. It was 2009 and eight months of gruelling chemotherapy and radiation lay ahead. Beneath his tough-guy exterior, he was scared. After graduating from Caloundra Christian College, he joined the army at the age of 19, planning to spend eight years there before joining the emergency services. He had his life well mapped out but when he couldn’t shake a chest infection and a nasty cough, and soon began to lose weight, he knew something sinister was at play. Blood tests and x-rays revealed he had Hodgkins lymphoma and his world came crashing down. “For the duration of my entire life, that will be the most vulnerable I’ve ever felt. I had that military mindset – I was a young alpha male, I didn’t want to portray any weakness. I was very stubborn, I wouldn’t let my mother and partner at the time come to the chemo with me. I could count on one hand the times I actually let them come.” His oncologist gave him an 80 per cent chance of survival, but he now knows it could have gone either way. “I’ve met three patients who have passed away and had the exact same diagnosis as me,” he says. “It was a wake-up call for me in realising how lucky I am. It’s one of those things that can go pear-shaped very quickly. It terms of treatment, your body is going to respond to it or not.” Greedy went on to serve five years in the army before leaving and enrolling in a Bachelor of Paramedic Science at the University of the Sunshine Coast, living with his parents at Moffat Beach while he completed his studies. A fitness fanatic who loved hiking and mountain climbing, it was during a trek on the Kokoda Trail in 2014 that he had a lightbulb moment. “While doing the Kokokda trail in June 2014, I decided I wanted to reach out to other Hodkins lymphoma patients. Up until that

Rhys Greedy at his favourite sunset location, Mount Ngungun and right, at the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, Tanzania point I had just sort of swept it under the rug, but it was there I realised my five years in remission, which would have been October 2014, was fast approaching.” Within two weeks of returning to Australia, Greedy was meeting with the CEO of Lymphoma Australia about trekking to raise money and awareness for the organisation. In December 2014 he took on Trek Towards a Cure for Lymphoma Australia, hiking to Annapurna Base Camp in Nepal. In July 2015 he climbed Mount Blanc in the French Alps and raised $14,300 for lymphoma patients. In July 2016, he climbed Mount Kilimanjaro for his Kilimanjaro for Kids campaign and raised $21,000 for the paediatric ward at Nambour Hospital. In less than three years, he has raised almost $50,000. After graduating from university in November last year, Greedy has embarked on his career as a paramedic with the Queensland Ambulance Service, working out of Chermside. Maintaining a close relationship with his parents, he spends his days off with them at Moffat Beach. Having realised how much he enjoys

fundraising for worthy causes, he’s now focusing on helping the families of Queensland paramedics who have died. “I had another trip on the bucket list I wanted to tick off this year,” he says. “I’ll be returning to Nepal and doing quite a significant mountain climb, about 6500 metres elevation. “The Queensland Ambulance Service Legacy Foundation reaches out to families of paramedics who have passed away. I’ve set a $10,000 bar to raise between now and November, which is when I’ll fly to Nepal and attempt the trek to Mera Peak. It’s considered the highest trekkable peak and I’ve set a personal challenge to do it in half the time it’s meant to be completed, which is 20 to 23 days. I’m going to try it in 12. “I put together a little video and posted it to my Facebook page on April 2 and it got 5000 views overnight. It really exploded and it has been recognised on a national level. “I want to have a major event every couple of months in the lead-up to the trek. I have no qualms about the fact that we’ll raise $10,000 once people get an idea of what’s going on.”

But before Greedy packs his hiking boots and his Kathmandu gear for another trip to the Himalayas, he’ll celebrate eight years in remission on his special day – October 13. “I’ll go down to Moffat Beach during the sunrise by myself and sit there for an hour, watch the sunrise and have some personal reflection. It feels a bit more special this year, thinking back on what’s happened. With these fundraising campaigns, the money raised is a bonus. It’s just been nice to connect with so many people. There has been tragedy with that – I’ve grown close to a couple of patients and unfortunately one of them did pass away a couple of months ago. “But I’ve realised reaching out to people can have a huge effect. Frankly, I was very apprehensive at the start, wondering if I was even going to raise money or if people were going to be interested in helping. I just threw it out there and the ripple effect has been nothing short of phenomenal.”

In my travels around our Sunshine Coast, I’m fortunate to speak with a whole range of residents and visitors from different age groups and backgrounds. At the moment, council has an extra special focus on our region’s youth as we create a new Youth Action Plan that aims to strengthen how young people participate and contribute to our healthy, smart and creative community. We want our region’s youth, aged 12 to 24, to be strongly involved in putting this plan together. We’re committed to ensuring they are considered in the decision making that affects their lives. Through an online survey, we’re after feedback about how our youth participate in their community, how they like to be engaged, decision making opportunities they would welcome and their short-term goals. Once it is complete, the Youth Action Plan will include priority areas and actions for council that will guide and direct the support provided to young people and the youth services sector on the Sunshine Coast. CBD GATEWAY UPGRADE TO BEGIN

Two major intersections on Maroochydore’s Aerodrome Road are set to be upgraded in preparation for the new Maroochydore City Centre, catering for future growth while improving road safety and connectivity. Work starts this month on the First Avenue and Maud Street intersections on Aerodrome Road, as construction on the Dalby Street and Bungama Street intersections reaches completion. Major stormwater upgrades along First Avenue into Cornmeal Parade will also be undertaken during April and May. The intersections at Maud Street and First Avenue will be one of the key entry points to our new Maroochydore City Centre, so it’s vital they are upgraded now to cater for additional traffic movements and make it as easy as possible for people to access the area to live, work and do business. Funded through council’s Capital Works Program, the Aerodrome Road upgrades prioritise active and public transport with new pedestrian paths and crossings, a separated cycle facility and improved access for public transport.

FREE SPEECH AT WHAT COST?

WHY EASTER ROCKS

Sunshine Coast lawyer Kyle Kimball says in the debate about the right to free speech, we can’t forget that words come at a cost.

Sami Muirhead gives some compelling reasons as to why Easter is a more relaxing holiday than Christmas – it’s hard to argue with chocolate.

f you are chasing me over the next few days do not expect a response because I have big plans to turn off my phone, stay in my pyjamas with my family and eat as many hot cross buns as possible. All this will be done with a large amount of time spent in bed. I could just take that entire packet of tiny Easter eggs and glue them to my backside, because I have no self-control this time of year. I love Easter! My plans are so sinfully lazy and decadent, though we will of course have to leave our chocolate- bingeing nest to conduct Easter egg hunts and occasionally put on fresh pyjamas. Easter is just about the most underrated holiday of the year. Christmas gets all the accolades as the big-ticket item and this is exactly what makes the Yule so tough at times, because we have a huge list of expectations such as giving endless gifts and seeing a small army of friends and relatives. Christmas is stressful financially and socially. It has become this monster that often causes more stress than merriment. So here are my top three reasons why Easter is the best thing in the world. 1. The climate. Finally, it is not so hot that even going to the beach feels a miserable mission. We have all just spent months sweltering and sweating. Yes, we live in paradise but it is exciting to actually be able to break out comfy jeans and the cosy tracksuit and have a hot cup of Milo or a hearty glass of red wine. And do not get me

started on fish and chips in the cooler weather. Pure bliss. Simple scooter rides along the river feel more like exciting adventures with windswept children and getting into flannelette pyjamas to watch movies snuggled under blankets is one of life’s joys. 2. It is a four-day holiday. Even though our poor retail workers are on duty this Easter Sunday, many of us have nowhere to be except in our beds eating hot cross buns. Four whole days to visit the hinterland and sip chai lattes or go to Boreen Point and get back to nature or maybe even clean out the garage. 3. Chocolate, glorious chocolate. No one judges you for eating your body weight in Cadbury Creme Eggs for breakfast. It is a national dietary requirement to indulge in fish and chips on Good Friday and nothing says Easter long weekend like a glass or two of wine at lunch. So I hope you enjoy a safe and soulreplenishing break. May it be bad for your hips but good for your mental stability. My six-year-old daughter did question why I am more excited about a holiday that is about the death of Jesus than the festival that celebrates his birthday. I did not really have a satisfactory explanation for this logic. Perhaps I need to start home schooling the little smart monkey. But maybe once she is served hot cross buns in bed for a few mornings, she too will be the Easter enthusiast I am. Happy Easter everyone.

ur esteemed members of Parliament recently found themselves debating proposed amendments to section 18C of the Racial Discrimination Act. This was presumably in furtherance of Attorney General Brandis’ brilliant insight that ‘everyone has the right to be a bigot’. However, the problem with rights, or more particularly the people so vehemently keen to exercise them, is that they also tend to carry with them responsibilities. Put simply, we can’t have people running about willy-nilly exercising their ‘rights’ without regard to the rights of others. For example, what about the rights of those folk who wish to avoid the bigoted expositions of others? Is that right any less valid than the supposedly sacrosanct right to free speech? There are many good arguments in support of protecting the right to free speech. Not the least of which include the benefits to society of being able to engage in free-flowing exchange of ideas that, sometimes at least, may include the criticism of others. To be free of the fear of recrimination for such speech is an important aspect of a modern, free, society. But even in that bastion of freedom, the home of the brave, the good ol’ USA, their constitutionally enshrined right to free speech is tempered by the caveat that one cannot ‘shout fire in a crowded

theatre’. That is, the Supreme Court was saying that even a fundamental right such as this carries the responsibility that it be used wisely and with regard to the rights of others. Any boor can shock the party with their supposedly uninhibited exercise of free speech. “Just saying what you were all thinking”, is the usual refrain. It takes a person with heart, and concern for the welfare and interests of others, to engage their brain before they open their mouth

It is used, not as a tool for the benefit of all, but as a defence for lazy and self-indulgent communication. It purports to excuse words that, often, do naught but serve as a cloak for fear and ignorance. Perhaps ‘free speech’ is a misnomer. Don’t we tend to take for granted that which is free? Let’s recognise that words come at a cost, that speech isn’t really ‘free’.

Child safety campaigners Bruce and Denise Morcombe have launched a new version of a space-themed online game that provides children aged eight to 10 with strategies to avoid sexual abuse. The original game, Orbit, was created several years ago by University of the Sunshine Coast academic, Professor Christian Jones, who has since collaborated with the Daniel Morcombe Foundation to develop Orbit Rescue, an interactive app designed to teach children in a non-threatening way to recognise predatory behaviour – like secrets, special gifts and other grooming techniques.

POLITICAL CAREER FLUSHED DOWN THE DRAIN In 2017, it’s hard to imagine homes in Buderim with backyard dunnies or a septic tank sitting in the landscaped gardens and yet, less than 35 years ago, sewerage was an issue on the plateau. WORDS: Dot Whittington.

he 1982 local government election spelt the end of the long Maroochy Shire Council reign of Eddie De Vere, who had been at the helm since 1967, and the local councillor for Kenilworth since 1951. He had successfully guided the shire through its first major growth pains, played a big part in getting tourism off the ground as an industry and was caught up in fierce local debate about the desirability of high-rise development. And yet, it was his passionate belief that Buderim should be connected to the sewerage system that led to his political demise at the 1982 local government election. It was ironic that the issue which led to his downfall was the same one that had previously scored him untold points. Water and sewerage systems had been a priority for De Vere since his election as the councillor for Kenilworth. Its reticulated water supply was the first on the Sunshine

Coast when it was turned on in 1957, and its sewerage scheme opened in 1963. Buderim’s water supply was opened in 1968, and by the early 1980s, De Vere had overseen construction of sewerage systems for most of Maroochy Shire’s major centres – Buderim being the exception. In those days, the State Government would assist with funding on such projects, as it was a means of generating employment. Having previously completed other sewerage projects around the shire with dollar for dollar state subsidies, De Vere was keen to keep going while money was available. He feared that the subsidy was about to be cut from 50 per cent to 30 per cent which, in a project amounting to millions of dollars, was the difference between it going ahead and becoming unaffordable. The problem was, that it also meant that rates would go up in Buderim to cover a levy for the new sewerage scheme.

A survey was sent to all ratepayers, who were invited to tick the box if they were in favour. An easy majority of 76 per cent voted in favour of going ahead with sewerage – but the exercise of contacting all the residents of Buderim cost nine months. With time running out on the available subsidy, De Vere pushed ahead quickly to get work underway. A large section of Buderim – was sewered on maximum subsidy and when the subsidy was dropped, De Vere had to plough on with the job that had been started. With the 1982 election in sight, the job was well underway and the project was past the point of no return. But debate continued to rage that Buderim rates were too high and the people could not afford to pay more for sewerage. It was reported in October 1981, that State Government cutbacks in local authority subsidies had forced Maroochy Shire Council to abandon a Yandina sewerage scheme (which opened two months later) and to freeze Buderim’s pending a review. Public opinion, stirred up by the local newspaper reports, started running high against De Vere and when headlines on election day in March 1982, were dedicated to the folly of a Buderim sewerage scheme, he knew that his more than 31 years in public life were over even before the polls opened. He recalled later, “As soon as I saw the headlines I knew at once I didn’t stand a chance. I put the newspaper straight in the wastepaper basket.” Eddie De Vere died at 86, in November 2000. Today, it is difficult to believe that a politician might lose his seat for wanting to install sewerage, but even harder to imagine Buderim without a sewerage system.

Maroochy Sands was officially opened on April 4, 1971, at the corner of Aerodrome Road and Sixth Avenue. At 10 stories, it was the tallest building on the Sunshine Coast and its first high-rise.

DID YOU KNOW? • The Maroochy Shire Council administration building, which opened in Nambour in 1978, was built with future expansion in mind. Its foundations were made strong enough for another three to four storeys to be added. But nobody foresaw Maroochydore replacing Nambour as the administrative centre. • A cattle run was established on land between the Maroochydore River and the Mooloolah River in the 1860s known as the Moolooloo Plains, while another run to the west was known as Mooloolah Back Plains. The 50th anniversary of the naming of the Sunshine Coast will be celebrated on August 1, 2017. In the lead-up to the occasion, My Weekly Preview will each week take a look into our region’s past. It’s not easy in those times, but another Buffett quote comes to mind: “Be fearful when others are greedy and greedy when others are fearful”. Such courage usually leads to significant long-term wealth creation. The next one from Benjamin Graham also rang true post GFC: “The individual investor should act consistently as an investor and not a speculator. This means you should be able to justify every purchase you make and each price you pay by impersonal, objective reasoning that satisfies you are getting more than your money’s worth for your purchase”. Restated, this means that you need a process to evaluate investment decisions rather than just taking a punt. I can’t tell you how many times clients ring up wanting to buy something after a tip from a mate at the golf club. Almost 100 per cent of the time these don’t end well. Longterm, rational investment decisions are the only real answer. Many retirees fall for the next trap: “Saving is a great habit, but without investing and tracking, it just sleeps” – Manoj Arora. The difference between saving and investing has never been more important.

recently read an article by Shane Oliver from AMP outlining 21 great investment quotes, and some of them are definitely worth reviewing. The first one really rung true in the GFC and it came from Warren Buffett: “Cash combined with courage in a time of crisis is priceless”. In March/April 2009 it became obvious this was the start of the post GFC recovery. Those with cash picked up bargains such as Commonwealth Bank at $26 (now $86) and Macquarie Bank at $15 (now $90). The list is endless. Conversely, those with no cash missed the obvious opportunities. Those with debt actually got caught out

Saving involves spending less than you earn (a very important first step) and then leaving the money in a bank deposit. However with interest rates at historic lows, this will not grow your wealth significantly, and you may even be going backwards after inflation. Investing is a disciplined process of placing your savings, and maybe some borrowings, in assets that will grow in value and in income return over time. The two main assets in this category are shares and property. While you can add other alternative assets such as gold, precious gems, antiques etc, these are much more speculative and generally just rely on someone more foolish than you paying a higher price than you did for something without an intrinsic value. There are many more such gems, however they all sum up something like this: Save and invest. Don’t take on too much risk. Research thoroughly any investments. Autumn garden inspiration

Marjorie Van Roy is a horticulturalist and the director of Manawee Garden Centre. She is passionate about providing advice to customers ranging from the home gardener to the developer. The aim is to gain pleasure and enjoyment from a garden or a complex. Having lived both in the southern states and in Queensland, Van Roy has extensive knowledge of both tropical and cool climate plants and their requirements. Van Roy has a personal interest and love of the French country style, using extensive hedging and pleached trees from magnolias to fruit trees. The pleasures gained from a well-maintained garden cannot be understated and become an asset to any home.

AUTUMN HOME PROJECTS The days are cooler and the leaves are beginning to fall off the trees. It’s time to get outdoors. Here are our top five autumn renovation and project tips. Clean the gutters If you haven’t done so lately, grab the ladder and get on your roof to clean fallen leaves out of your guttering.

Finally after some long awaited rainfall, autumn has arrived in earnest. Following the intense weather early in the month, make sure you have taken some time to inspect your garden. If branches or stems have been snapped, take the time to prune the branch cleanly – poorly pruned branches are susceptible to disease and are generally weaker the next season. Tidy up gardens beds from leaf debris and stems – these can all be wonderful compost additives, but they often create fungal problems when left on the ground.

Prune overhanging branches Autumn is also a great time to prune any overhanging branches, which will begin to drop leaves.

IN THE FLOWER AND VEGETABLE PATCH With cooler temperature, it is time to start preparing for winter crops. Make sure your soil is well cultivated and drains thoroughly – most winter crops will not tolerate over watering. Remember that most plants will grow slower during this period, so ensure you have a good slow releasing fertiliser incorporated into the soil. For edibles, consider planting; broccoli, cauliflower, cabbages, bok choi and other Asian greens, beans, peas, spinach and silverbeet will all do well. The flower range is increasing as well with aster, delphiniums, primula, pansy, snapdragons, sweet peas and violas all starting to thrive.

There are times of the year that present opportunities to use plants that we often can’t find throughout the rest of the year. With the shorter day lengths comes the flowering wonder of chrysanthemums. Whether they are for cut flowers or just potted pleasure, chrysanthemums offer a huge variety of colour and are some of the most durable flowers around. They will happily grow outdoors in full sun or even in a pot, in a well-lit indoor environment.

This is possibly the last time before winter you will have to fertilise, before the colder weather slows everything down. Organic Plus Fertiliser is a complete fertiliser, suitable for use on all plants, including natives. This product is a pulverised, granular fertiliser, which will break down over three months, providing plenty of nutrition to plants over the cooler season. Remember to always apply any fertiliser to a damp soil, and water in thoroughly once applied.

Restain the deck The harsh Queensland sun can damage outdoor decking, particularly through the summer months. Take advantage of the fresh weather and get to work restaining dried-out and faded decks. You will need to clean the area thoroughly before beginning. Allow it to dry properly before applying the stain with a wide paint brush. Roof repair Did you know that holes or gaps in your roof can affect the warmth of the interior of your home? When cleaning out the gutters, have a look around for any damage to tiles or sheeting. Speak to a professional about required repairs.

SPEEDY SUV PACKS A PUNCH Audi has raised the stakes in its high-tech rivalry against its fellow German marques with this ballistic new weapon. Words: Peter Atkinson, AAP.

here’s an arms race being waged that has nothing to do with the United States, China or Russia. It involves the Germans – but doesn’t concern Chancellor Angela Merkel (or her good mate Donald Trump, for that matter). This power play is being fought between the three leading German carmakers – and particularly Audi and Mercedes-Benz – on a most unusual battlefield. The weapons here are SUVs – and the prize is to see who can conjure up the most outrageous, most audacious soft-roader on

the market. Audi has fired the latest salvo in the form of its new ballistic weapon – the fire-breathing RSQ3 Performance. Just when you thought the automobile world couldn’t get any less predictable, with SUVs from the likes of Maserati, Lamborghini, Bentley and Jaguar, along comes yet another gobsmacking addition to the soft-roader firmament. I mean really? A pint-sized SUV – the kind of car which, in its everyday form, is most likely found picking kids up from kindy or

transporting the family groceries home from the supermarket – that can reach the speed limit in 4.4 seconds? That makes it faster than a Porsche Boxster and even the original version of Audi’s spectacular R8 coupe. As the name suggests, the RSQ3 is based upon Audi’s baby Q3 – until recently the smallest member of their ever-growing SUV range. But it’s the RS part that makes the difference here – with a five-cylinder, turbocharged engine straight out of the company’s evil science laboratory. The RSQ3 was launched two years ago – quite rightly aimed at a niche market of about 100 annual sales Down Under. Surprisingly, it sold almost four times the expected volume – prompting Audi to release this all-new, trumped-up version of this potent little machine. Its snarling 270 kilowatts gives it more than double the power of the entry-level Q3 upon which it is based. The Performance model adds an additional 20kW – and shaves almost half a second from its 0-100km/h time – over the regular version of the RSQ3 it replaces. Yet despite its precocious performance numbers, it’s a surprisingly pleasant thing to drive. It’s compact and nimble enough to be an absolute joy driving around the city. Its clever design means it’s ideally suited to loading young families, and all of their

accompanying gear with a minimum of fuss. But it turns into Mr Hyde when the lights turn green. I’m not totally convinced that it’s necessary. Yes, its ‘evil twin, the RS3 hatchback, which uses the same phenomenal engine, transmission and underpinnings – is a sublime thing. But I couldn’t help feel that, in the RSQ3, we’ve somehow ventured slightly beyond the sublime towards the ridiculous. Did we enjoy driving it? Of course. And it’s a hard thing to criticise, with all the class and finish Audi pours into all of its vehicles.

AUDI RSQ3 HOW BIG? It’s a compact SUV, meaning there’s space in the rear for three, preferably children. It has a modest cargo capacity with electric rear tailgate. HOW FAST? Ridiculously so. It’s one of the fastest SUVs on the planet and will give most supercars a decent run for their money.

HOW THIRSTY? Official thirst is 8.8L/100km – not great for a little SUV, but pretty decent for a car with this performance potential. HOW MUCH? Base price is $84,216; our test car with upgraded leather trim and metallic paint topped $90,000. Onroads will push it dangerously close to six figures.

Ok here it is, your teaser for today. If a quiz is quizzical what is a test? Haha. Wow, ding ding here we go with Bells Beach. I don’t think it is going to be as exciting as Margaret river was. Man, that was off the hook. Also, get yourself down to the Pa and Ma Bendall Memorial Surfing Contest at Moffat Beach this weekend. It has a great vibe with food stalls and a lot of friendly locals. This is one of the longest running surf competitions in Australia so we should all support it. Now, I think there will be waves around but I have written this column way too early so I am winging it. One hand is praying while the other types. But, we will have some visitors and, as always, be friendly as this is the key to good coastal economics. To the person who stole three boards from me recently: I hope your son needed it more than mine did.

ESTUARY: Small bream have been a nuisance from Bli Bli to the Maroochy Bar but size will improve on the full moon with fowl gut and yabbies the best bait around the snags. Whiting are being snapped up on cured beach worms and soldier crabs at Twin Waters and Goat Island. Flathead and trevally along the drop-offs at Cotton Tree. Mud crabs are still about. SURF: Good sized dart from Marcoola to Mudjimba and Kawana. Beach worms are returning sand whiting in the low tide gutters. Tailor and bream at Pincushion with dawn and dusk best, using small pillies and mullet fillet. OFFSHORE: Murphy’s and Twelve Mile reefs have good reports of squire, sweetlip and Maori cod on squid and cut baits. The Barwon Banks, if conditions allow, and wide Caloundra will return snapper, pearl perch and Spanish mackerel. Spanner crabs are being caught in about 40 metres. FRESHWATER: Lake McDonald at Cooroy is returning bag limits of bass on trolled medium divers one day and live shrimps the next, mainly in the deep. Somerset has golden perch, silvers and bass with slow trolling deep diving lures and shrimps jigged next to the sticks working equally as well. The recent rains have clouded the water at Borumba making it hard to spot the saratoga, but the water will clear quickly.

THE JOY OF PRANKING YOUR PARENTS Richard O’Leary finds himself the butt of his son’s practical jokes – and it’s not funny.

sit down to my Saturday morning cup of coffee. I’ve made it myself – ground the beans, packed the filter holder, pressed the button and watched the creamy pick-me-up stream into the cup. I add a splash of soy milk and take myself to the dining room table to read the paper. Perfection. I take a gulp – and can’t get to the kitchen sink quick enough to spit it out. It takes me a while to work out what is wrong – it tastes like the ocean, actually it’s saltier than that. Puzzled, I try to work out what has gone wrong. I peer around the back of the espresso machine to look at the water container, which has suspicious clumps of salt resting on top of it. I disengage it from the machine and there’s a centimetre of white sediment on the bottom. I pour out the water and start again. By this stage my eldest son can hold

out no longer. “Nice coffee?” he asks with a Luna Park smirk. Under his arm he is carrying 101 Cool Practical Jokes like a loaded gun. “A little salty, perhaps?” I keep my cool. Not so much the second time around. In the following days he works his way through the abovementioned book – Quick and Easy Jokes, Not So Quick and Easy Jokes, Food and Drink Jokes, Parent Jokes, and the list goes on. Curious and keen to get it out of his hands, I commandeer the book. I’m interested to read in the introduction that practical jokes should never hurt anyone or be cruel. I’d argue the old salty coffee trick fails both those preconditions. I take some solace from the fact I am in good company as far as being punked by practical jokes. The book reveals that in 1957 a British television show convinced viewers that spaghetti grew on trees (a joke repeated by

an Australian TV station in the ‘80s), and Richard Branson once flew a hot air balloon shaped like a flying saucer over London. But it also warns about the dangers of practical jokes, something my eldest son finds out a week or so after the start of his family torture sessions. It happens just after he finishes judo. All hot and sweaty, he reaches for his drink bottle and takes a huge swig. He pulls the most unusual face and spits the water back into the container. No, and before you go there, I didn’t turn the tables on him – it was all his own doing. He’d spiked his brother’s bottle. Unfortunately for him, they look exactly the same, and he grabbed the wrong one. Did he learn his lesson? Not really, he thought it was hilarious.
