was 26 when I was first appointed to a management role. Not only was I young, but I was female and known for being a gentle person.

It’s fair to say I experienced my share of challenges. A few select people attempted to overshadow my position, while reference to my age was a common theme.

From this, I learnt. It took some time but I began to value and respect my own abilities in the workplace. Fast forward a few (OK, more than a few) years and each negative experience thrown at me from the early days of my career, has helped shape who I am.

That, and a handful of wonderful mentors.

Today, I proudly work alongside a strong team, made up of both men and women, who support and respect each other.

As I write this, I am sitting in an office surrounded by six other women who are strong, capable and intelligent. These women – who have become an integral part of my life – support each other personally and professionally.

To all the women out there who have faced challenges, I’m sure you will appreciate this week’s cover story. Let’s continue to inspire each other.

YOUR GREATEST REGRET? FIRST JOB?

I’d say not listening to people earlier. As teenagers and young people in particular, we tend to want to learn things for ourselves rather than taking the advice of others, particularly our parents. I could have saved a lot of time and effort and made a few people a lot happier.

Working at a fish and chips shop cooking burgers and fries when I was 14.

WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY WORKING ON? I’ve just started uni at the Sunshine Coast University doing a Bachelor of Business and I’m just finishing off my commercial pilot’s licence. I’ve been doing a few talks around the place and I’m looking at launching a couple of businesses in future around youth development.

WHAT ACHIEVEMENT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF?

FIRST CAR? Nissan X-Trail, silver.

FAVOURITE BOOK? The Book Thief – I think it’s really creative that it’s narrated by death.

FAVOURITE SONG? I love my jazz. I like the classics, like Frank Sinatra. Michael Bublé has some great songs. Come Fly With Me was a big part of my world flight. I started playing trombone in a jazz band at school and I absolutely loved it. I’ve played the piano for 12 or 13 years now.

BEST ADVICE YOU’VE BEEN GIVEN?

HOW LONG HAVE YOU LIVED ON THE SUNSHINE COAST? My whole life.

WHY DO YOU LIVE HERE? I’m still living at home so that’s one reason. I love the Sunshine Coast because you’ve got such a variety of things you can do. If I drive 20 minutes east I’m in the ocean, 20 minutes west I’m out in the bush camping.

You’ve got city if you want it, rural if you want it. It’s the perfect place to live.

FAVOURITE PLACE? Image Flat Falls – it’s a little waterhole towards the back of Yandina.

WHERE DO YOU TAKE VISITORS? Where don’t I take visitors, more like it. The beach and Image Flat Falls. I love getting up on the range, Maleny and Montville, looking at the views up there. If they’re special visitors I’ll take them for a fly and that’s the best way to see the Sunshine Coast.

IF YOU COULD CHANGE ONE THING ON THE COAST, WHAT WOULD IT BE? There’s a bit of a stigma attached to a few places, particularly Nambour, but things are really changing. Nambour is becoming a bit of a hipster place, almost like a little Maleny.

BEST DAY IN YOUR LIFE? The day I got back from the world flight. It was the day when all my stresses of three years of planning came to an end and I could finally sit back and relax and say I did it. Without being cocky, so much effort went into it, so much time and stress. I didn’t see mum for eight weeks. Mum was really strong before I left, she didn’t sob – much.

But she let it all out when I got back as she didn’t have to hold it all together anymore.

She marshalled me in when I got back. She didn’t know what to do, she was just waving the paddles around. When I got out she just dropped the paddles and ran towards me.

WHAT FRUSTRATES YOU? We have a big problem in Australia with tall poppy syndrome. I’m never one to get angry or visibly upset, I always like to make sure everything is in control – it’s a pilot thing. But the tall poppy syndrome in Australia is frustrating. There are so many young people out there with fantastic dreams but they often won’t go and do it because they’re afraid of failing or being called a try-hard. It’s really rife in our schooling system. I think it’s something that needs to be addressed because achieving is something to be celebrated and hard work should be celebrated.

TEA OR COFFEE? It really depends on what mood I’m in, but I love both. Coffee, white with one sugar.

Tea, white with no sugar.

NRL OR AFL? NRL – they haven’t been doing very well in the last decade, but the Wests Tigers.

I’m an only child, my parents separated when I was young, it’s just my mum and I at home in Nambour and I visit my dad in Buderim. Both my parents have partners and I have a big extended family.

I’d say the world flight and more importantly, what’s followed after. I did a bit of a tour of schools, sharing my experiences and what I learnt about how to achieve. I’ve seen that come into effect with a few of the people I’ve spoken to.

Schoolkids have come up and said, I had this dream and never thought I’d get there but now I’m going to give it a go.

AROUND THE WORLD Astronomers have found a nearby solar system with seven Earth-size planets bolstering the prospect of discovering extraterrestrial life.

The planets circle the star, known as Trappist-1, a small, dim celestial body in the constellation Aquarius. It is 39 light years away from Earth, close by astronomical standards, but about 44 million years away at the average cruising speed of a commercial passenger jet.

To say I was taken aback by this vintage advert, is an understatement. This 1950s advertisement demonstrates the bias attitudes, which were acceptable in mainstream media and the community, about women. It was not uncommon for women to be stereotyped into gender roles. While there is still some way to go, I am grateful to live in a time when gender and race equality is edging closer to where it should be.

f you aren’t willing to fight for what you believe in, then don’t even enter the ring.”

We are more than 100 years on from the birth of the Australian feminist movement and yet these words, as spoken by known social activist Madonna, ring true.

Perhaps today, more loudly than ever.

Many global citizens – both male and female – believe that gender equality has been set back decades following America’s decision to empower a man who, throughout his lengthy business career, has publicly objectified women.

A man who has been quoted by media outlets for using the words: ‘fat’, ‘pig’ and ‘crazy’ to describe women, including fellow presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.

On January 21, an estimated five million people worldwide marched in opposition to the political agenda of US President Donald Trump.

It is 2017 – a time when gender equality should be the norm – and yet this year’s Women’s March has been labelled as the largest protest in American history with participation at 600 sites across 60 countries.

Feminism, equality – call it what you will – this issue has reignited with force and is at the forefront of human rights and political agendas across the world.

We are in the grip of the third-wave of the feminist movement – a time where women are working towards addressing social, cultural, financial and political agendas and inequalities. There is no escaping the fact that it remains a work in progress, even here on home soil.

In Australia, the average full-time weekly wage for a woman is 18.2 per cent less than a man’s. The national gender pay gap has remained stuck between 15 and 18 per cent for the past 20 years.

Figures from the Australian Human Rights Commission show that in 2014, 49 per cent of mothers experienced discrimination in the workplace.

It’s not all negative – we have made some inroads.

Women now make up 18.6 per cent of the boards of ASX 200-listed companies – a jump of 8.3 per cent in four years.

And, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, women held 41 per cent of senior executive roles and just under 48 per cent of executive level roles in the Australian public sector in 2015.

Professor Joanne Scott is the Executive Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Business and Law and Pro Vice-Chancellor (Engagement) at the University of the Sunshine Coast.

She has published in the Australian and Queensland history, labour history, gender and race relation sectors and says, as a historian, she has witnessed significant changes in women’s roles in our workplaces.

“That doesn’t mean that as a community we should sit back and be satisfied with what has already been achieved; there’s certainly more to achieve,’ Scott tells My Weekly Preview.

“There are still obstacles for women and also sometimes for men who want to enter and succeed in careers that were traditionally regarded as women’s work.

“During my career I have occasionally found myself the only woman in a room of male colleagues. And thankfully, a long time ago, I had the experience of realising that people I was meeting with were looking past me, assuming that ‘Professor Scott’ would be male and presumably was about to follow me into the room. I continue to encounter situations where there’s a tendency to identify men rather than women as the obvious choice for a position or an opportunity.”

A new study conducted by researchers at the University of Illinois, Princeton University and New York University, shows that by the age of six, girls are more likely to associate brilliance with the opposite sex. The aim of the research was to determine if young children endorse stereotypes.

Lead researcher, Lin Bian of the University of Illinois, says the identified notion pushes women away from jobs perceived to require intelligence.

In one experiment the children, aged between five and seven, heard a story about a person who was “really, really smart” and were asked to guess who it was about based on male and female characters.

Boys and girls aged five view their own gender positively. However, girls aged six and seven are less likely to associate brilliance with their own gender.

Social commentator Dr Lynette Maguire, who studied narcissism for her doctorate at the University of the Sunshine Coast and has majored in psychology, says breaking down stereotypes is the key to a reformed approach.

“I believe the messages we’re giving our boys and girls are different, and that’s part of the problem. The messages come from all areas, the media, movies, books, music, advertising and parenting,’’ she says.

“For example, parents buy kitchens for girls and engineering type toys for boys so again, reinforcing tired stereotypes that girls belong in the domestic space and boys are smart and will go out and earn the money.

“Girls’ tees will have logos such as ‘pretty princess’ and boys’ tees say stuff like ‘pilot in training’. Basically this type of thing legitimises the idea that boys are the brains and girls are sexualised, and that their looks are more important than any other asset.”

Gender equality and respect for women goes deeper than stereotyping.

Some commentators on the issue go as far as to say gender preference and discrimination has resulted in 62 million more males than females on our planet.

Alarmingly, more than 100 million baby girls have been killed, aborted and neglected

“It’s important we teach this to all genders. Stop buying into the retail objectification of our children and as consumers and parents, start looking at the subliminal messages.

“Deconstruct advertising with children – not many people have realised that soft porn is taking over the advertising market, again reducing women to sexual objects.

to the point of death, indicating that this dominance is at the hands of society.

Movements such as International Women’s Day, which will be held on March 8 and 4Girls GLocal Leadership aim to bring empowerment into the hands of women.

The 4Girls GLocal Leadership Women’s Empowerment Global Survey – believed to be a world first – shows that the number one challenge facing teenage girls and young women is gender discrimination and violence, including war.

The number one change they want is personal development, followed by career and income, while more than 60 per cent said they were their own greatest contributor to creating change. Furthermore, 46 per cent reported that self-awareness improved their life, followed by experience and thirdly, education.

Coolum resident Nicole Szepesvary has broken down all barriers when it comes to both her professional and sporting career.

By day, the 29-year-old works as a medical scientist at the Sunshine Coast Private Hospital in Buderim. But once the white coat comes off, she steps into a different lab.

On any given day you are sure to find her sweating it out at Combat Lab, the gym owned by her husband Joel, where she trains for the mixed martial arts (MMA) circuit.

Szepesvary looks slight but she is a force to be reckoned with once she takes to the ring.

“I’ve been doing jiu-jitsu for four or five years. I’ve won every state final in the past four years.

“October was my first MMA fight and then I had another in December. I won those first two. (MMA) stems from the popularity of the Ultimate Fighting Championships (UFC)… and Rhonda Rousey. Some people love her, some people hate her, but she’s the one that started women in UFC. Women are realising they can do this as well.”

As for encountering obstacles, Szepesvary says she has experienced no discrimination.

“When I get into the ring I love it, I feel amazing. I thrive under pressure like that too. That rush you don’t get anywhere else.

“You are doing it 100 per cent yourself, it’s 100 per cent up to you.”

She hopes to inspire other young women to believe in themselves and their goals.

“It’s the confidence. Don’t be afraid to try something different. Don’t feel like you have to be feminine, do whatever sport makes you happy.”

Szepesvary agrees that breaking down barriers begins in the home.

“I’ve always been given every opportunity growing up. I’ve never been made to feel that anything is out of reach.’’

As the owner, director and builder of Hotondo Homes on the Sunshine Coast, Alyssa Pepper is another woman breaking down barriers. She says it is only a matter of time before the gender equality discussion in the workplace will be extinct.

“I’m the type of person who thrives on challenges, and every obstacle that presented itself is just another challenge to take on, learn a little more and grow – it’s my driving force. I have been fortunate to never encounter restrictions by working in a male-dominated industry, if anything it has been the complete opposite.”

Pepper’s advice to young women: “Don’t be deterred by something that doesn’t seem to be the norm. I would rather be doing something I am extremely passionate about every day. Admittedly, it may not always be completely smooth sailing, but if you really want to pursue your passion, there is nothing stopping you but yourself.”

Builder Alyssa Pepper says education has been great in breaking down the barrier of male and female dominated industries which has allowed people to pursue a field of interest that may have been deemed for a specific gender.

NEW ADEM CROSBY CANCER CARE UNIT OPENS IN APRIL The Comprehensive Cancer Care Unit at the new Sunshine Coast University Hospital is on schedule to open in April. The Adem Crosby Centre, named after the well-known cancer fundraiser who lost his battle with leukaemia in 2013, will include expanded cancer care services, provide medical oncology, radiation oncology, haematology and acute specialised inpatient services. Two linear accelerators worth about $5.6 million Adem’s family Brent, Miranda and Lu Crosby in total will be used to deliver radiotherapy to patients with cancer needing radiation treatment. More than 650 patients are forecast to receive 13,000 treatments from the linear accelerators in the first year of operation.

AN END TO PETROL PRICE CONFUSION IS ON THE WAY The Queensland Government has begun community and industry consultation on reforms to protect motorists from pricing confusion at petrol stations.

The government plans to ban the display of discounted prices on fuel price boards that are only available to motorists who have a discount voucher or make an in-store purchase. The strict new regulations should be signed off by mid-year and service station owners then given six months to implement the changes which would take effect from January 2018.

58 POINTS ELECTORAL BOUNDARY CHANGES The Queensland Redistribution Commission has released its proposal for redrawing the state’s electoral boundaries, announcing 19 new or renamed seats, including four extra electorates added to South-East Queensland. One of the proposed new seats for the Coast will be called Ninderry. It is situated between Mons and Kuluin and the southern border of the Noosa Shire Council area.

The Sunshine Coast Lightning have continued to show they are a force to be reckoned with, following up their first round draw with the Firebirds with a victory over the Melbourne Vixens on the weekend.

NDIS FREE INFORMATION SESSIONS The number of people on the Sunshine Coast living with a disability, and who are entitled to government funding, is expected to double in the next few years under the introduction of the National Disability Insurance Scheme. Coast-based charity, 121 Care, has begun a series of information sessions, which will continue throughout March. The sessions cover the introduction of the NDIS, how it operates, eligibility for the new system, and what the next steps are. hen Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve was officially opened in 1960 by the then Governor of Queensland, Sir Henry Abel Smith, he stood on the back of a truck to deliver his speech.

This week, Queensland Governor Paul De Jersey stood in the brand new $4.7-million Rainforest Discovery Centre to mark the beginning of a new era for the popular Maleny reserve.

Among those who attended the official opening on Monday was long-time Maleny resident Desley Malone, who was 18 years old when she attended the original opening 57 years ago.

Malone says back then, the reserve was open parkland with a toilet and the reserve we came to know slowly took shape with the assistance of the Rotary Club of Maleny and later the Mary Cairncross Park Committee, both of which her husband Tom volunteered for.

“The locals maintained it until the council was able to find money to help and they built the cottage as a caretaker’s residence, which was then developed into a kiosk to provide food and drinks to people,” she says.

“We have waited a long time for this facility, and it has exceeded all expectations.

“It is really one of the loveliest tourist facilities that I’ve seen, and I have travelled around the world, so we’re so lucky to have it just outside our door.”

Malone knew the Thynne sisters, Elizabeth, Mabel and Mary, who, with the aid of their brother Ted, originally gifted the reserve land to the council in 1941 in honour of their mother, Mary Cairncross.

They stipulated the 55 hectares of subtropical rainforest be used for conservation, preservation and exhibition.

The new discovery centre does all of that and more, with an elevated viewing platform offering spectacular views of the heritage-listed Glass House Mountains, a boardwalk and the Rainforest Education Centre with a combination of traditional interactive displays, multi-sensory experiences and exhibits.

There is also a theatrette, a conservation research area and offices and amenities for the hard-working volunteers and staff who run the information desk.

Of the $4.7-million project cost, $319,000 was made up of gold coin donations given by visitors of the reserve, $30,000 from the Friends of Mary Cairncross, the council’s contribution of $3.51 million and $1 million in funding from the Queensland Tourism Infrastructure Fund.

Mayor Mark Jamieson says the new centre is one of the most impressive buildings in the region.

“This reserve is a Queensland icon with highly significant conservation values and has been a popular destination for residents and visitors for more than 50 years,” Jamieson says.

“It attracts about 200,000 people annually from around the country and overseas and this new Discovery Centre, with so many unique features to enjoy, is going to significantly add to the experience they will receive while they are here.

“Most importantly, it will improve council’s ability to deliver on the Thynne sisters’ desire to conserve and exhibit the reserve’s stunning flora, fauna and scenery.”

The new centre is open for visitors and the new-look cafe will be open for service from mid-March.

In January last year, an old shed on Steve Irwin Way was transformed into a work of art with five simple letters on it – ACTVE. With it came a promise that the Sunshine Coast would become the home of a theme park the likes of which the country has never seen before.

With Sanad Capital having been granted a development approval from the Sunshine Coast Council for the first phase of the $400-million venture, construction will begin in a matter of months.

The first stage of Australia’s first active lifestyle theme park will be built over 14 hectares and include a state-of-the-art waterpark, a great lawn for major events and an outdoor adventure park with activities including kayaking, bungee jumping, net climbing, flyboarding, Segways and electric skateboard hire, zorbing, stand-up paddle boarding and football to name a few.

It also includes a 6000-square-metre retail and restaurant zone, which Sanad Capital CEO Bradley P Sutherland says will attract leading global brands.

The next two phases of the project will be submitted to the council this year. These will include a four-star, 225-room family hotel with conferencing facilities, an action sports precinct with world-class facilities for skateboarding, BMX, parkour and more, and the much anticipated Wave Reservoir, another first for Australia.

Visit Sunshine Coast CEO Simon Latchford says the project will boost the region’s ability to attract leisure travellers and conferences.

“The Sanad project will add significantly to the Sunshine Coast’s tourism and entertainment sector, and will be particularly effective for attracting domestic and international family travellers,” he says.

“This project, along with other long-term investments such as our new airport, will open the way for growth, jobs and further tourism investment on the Sunshine Coast.”

Sanad Capital, a privately owned development and investment company, is based on the Sunshine Coast and is an offshoot of Dubai-based business group Najibi.

37TH IMMANUEL ARTS FESTIVAL LAUNCHED

N

ot many photographers take a back seat and let their subjects guide a shoot, but that is exactly what John Dumble did when he collaborated with Julia Loaney to create the exhibition InnerSense, which will debut at a Sunshine Coast Business Women’s Network International Women’s Day Breakfast on March 8.

The collection features 13 Sunshine Coast women who have inspired Loaney since she moved to the region in 2002, including Mayor Mark Jamieson’s wife Lorrell, former Sunshine Coast councillor Debbie Blumel and 2015 Summer Surf Girl winner Tiffany Di Ianni.

But this is far from a collection of glamour makeovers. Loaney and Dumble asked the women to direct their own shoot, provide their own props and backdrops and decide exactly how they wanted to be portrayed.

The results are a glimpse into who these women believe they are at a very deep level.

“There is everything from jigsaw puzzles to chameleons, but I’m not going to give too much away,” Loaney says.

The seeds for InnerSense were planted in the late 1990s when Loaney launched Canberra photographer Michael Thorne’s Sense of Self exhibitions.

Loaney was the subject of one of Thorne’s

John Dumble and Julia Loaney exhibitions and says the process of looking deep within your psyche to determine who you are is an enriching experience.

With no budget to work with, Loaney says this project was brought to life with community support. Express Print & Mail provided 16-page booklets with each of the photographs and captions inside, Deck the Walls mounting the photos free of charge for the exhibition and Dumble donating his time to photograph the women.

Professor Andrea Maier from Royal Melbourne Hospital and University of Melbourne says living longer is relatively easy, but living healthy life spans requires effort. “But you just have to make your life a little bit more difficult – include your physical exercise in the daily living,� she says.

Life expectancy has increased across the globe, and in South Korea it’s creeping towards 90.

According to new life expectancy projections, Australian boys born in 2030 can expect to live to 84, four years longer than those born in 2010. Girls born in 2030 can expect to live until they are 87.5.

The good news is behavioural changes that have an impact can be made even at the age of 50 and 60.

MEMORY DECLINE DOESN’T DISCRIMINATE, STUDY A higher level of education might give you a better memory but it does not slow the rate of its decline, a British study has found.

Researchers at University College London measured the cognitive ability of more than 11,000 Europeans aged 65 and over from 10 countries.

Participants’ ability to use their memory was tested when they entered the study, with the result known as their baseline score.

The participants, sorted by the number of years they had spent in education, were retested every two years over an eight-year period to measure any decline in their memory.

The study found people with higher levels of education had better baseline scores, meaning they had better memories than their counterparts with lower levels of attainment.

But those with high and low education levels saw their memory decline at the same rate over the eight years.

Our Sunshine Coast libraries are among our best loved and most used assets.

And we are always looking to make the experience of visiting your local library an even better one for everyone.

Last year, our eight library branches and two mobile libraries received an amazing 1.4 million visitors, with 2.5 million items borrowed and 400 volunteers providing 20,000 hours of support.

We added another 17,000 new library members to take the total past 113,000, which makes it the biggest ‘club’ on our Sunshine Coast.

There are now 395,000 items in the library collection that members can borrow for free.

At our February council meeting last week, councillors endorsed plans to expand Coolum Library, which was identified as one of the smallest in the library network while experiencing some of the highest growth in visitor numbers.

The Coolum Library alone welcomed 180,000 people last year.

This expansion is a great investment in our community and I’m sure will be welcomed by library lovers in the Coolum region.

PIPES CHECK IN The initial shipment of pipes for Australia’s first, high-tech, automated waste collection system for a CBD has arrived in Maroochydore, ahead of construction on the first stage starting later this year.

The waste system will be installed in stages over the coming decade and will make the 53-hectare Maroochydore City Centre one of the cleanest and greenest cities in the country.

Rather than using wheelie bins, waste will be transported from commercial buildings and apartments at up to 70kmh through a 6.5-km system of underground vacuum pipes located beneath Australia’s newest city centre.

Project teams from Council and SunCentral Maroochydore joined representatives from system designer and manufacturer Envac, who flew from South Korea, to inspect the pipes and other materials.

As well as making our city heart more attractive, this technology has a track record of increasing recycling rates to benefit our environment.

NEW ANIMAL POUND OPENS ITS DOORS Lost pets and livestock on the Sunshine Coast are now being cared for at a new facility with council’s new Sippy Creek Animal Pound in Sippy Creek Road, Tanawha, officially open.

Construction started in January last year on the state-of-the-art facility, which features a cattery building with 32 individual cat enclosures, a kennel building with 32 individual kennel modules, an assessment facility, a large animal enclosure, a poultry enclosure and central administration and reception building.

The new pound will have the ability to service the region’s growing pet population and animal management needs now and into the future.

The former pound had been servicing the Coast for more than 30 years and

demand on the service has grown significantly over that time.

Council has a commitment to safely house lost or abandoned animals and the new pound will enable us to do so in a way that is aligned with contemporary animal welfare obligations and guidelines.

The new facility features an impressive list of sustainable design features.

To make it easier for residents to collect their lost pets, the new pound has extended its trading hours and is open from Monday to Friday 8.15am to 6pm and Saturday 9am to noon.

The project was funded through council’s $183 million Capital Works Program, which council delivers to provide high quality services and facilities across the Sunshine Coast.

A LIFETIME OF HARD WORK PAYS OFF Caloundra’s Tristan Kurz is now Australia’s top BMW dealer after taking out the coveted Dealer of the Year award last week. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw.

A

s a child, Tristan Kurz hated having to wash cars in his father’s dealership every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon. He was only nine and an ocean lover who wanted to be swimming and surfing with his friends. But in hindsight, he can see how his parents were determined to instil in him a work ethic, something that has stood him in good stead throughout his life and last week, led him to be crowned Australian BMW Dealer of the Year, ahead of 43 other dealers nationally.

“It was written in stone,” Kurz says. “Every holidays, Tuesdays and Thursdays after school and when I was a bit older, Saturdays. The older you get the more you appreciate what your parents did. Only once you become a parent do you understand some of the decisions your parents made when you were a kid. While the skill level I provided mightn’t have been the highest, I certainly tried. It was a great lesson in life that if you worked hard, you got things. I remember being about 10 years old and working a full week, then going to Toy World and buying the latest Ninja Turtle figure. That was a big thing for me.”

If you count washing the cars, Kurz has worked at Coastline BMW in Currimundi for 28 years, and it hasn’t been an easy ride.

“The year I bought into the business was the year the GFC started,” he says. “You couldn’t get a bigger challenge in the last quarter of a century in trying to sell luxury cars. There was a really special moment when our external accountant told us we had to cut multiple staff, which was very upsetting, emotionally and practically. We had invested so much time in training these people. My father woke up in the middle of the night and said, I’ve worked out how we can keep them.

Let’s all take a ten per cent pay cut.”

There was universal buy-in from the staff and the dealership survived, reaching a pinnacle on February 21 when Kurz received the award at the State Library of Victoria in a gala event. Kurz is quick to avoid claiming the credit, citing his general manager Brad

“To be assessed to be better than those 43 others you get a great sense of pride, not only in what I have achieved but the 60 other people working here that are a huge part of it.

We have come second seven times in the last 12 years so... it was a mixture of massive relief and massive excitement.”

Despite achieving the top gong, Kurz hasn’t always been sure he’s in the right job.

“I think there’s not a day in the week where a car dealer doesn’t wonder if he shouldn’t have done something different, there’s huge pressure from the manufacturers and huge pressure from staff, pressure from customer expectations, moments where you go, do I really want all this stress?”

Kurz completed a Bachelor of Business at the University of the Sunshine Coast in 2004, with a major in international business and a minor in marketing and languages. He paid the bills during uni with a role on a Channel Nine kid’s show called Hot Sauce, an

experience he describes as “great fun”. While he’s now at the top of his game in business, he has a burning desire of a different kind.

“I always wanted to be and still hope to be a high school teacher,” he says. “I’ve got a great passion for learning and I really enjoy teaching people. I love telling people about history and economics, I get so much enjoyment out of that and love teaching my kids. I’ve threatened multiple times to complete the degree to become a teacher but with the car yard and a young family, there isn’t time.”

Kurz has two daughters, five and three, with his French wife, Coralie. Of German ancestry, Kurz lived in France for two years as a child and speaks both German and French.

At home, Kurz and his wife speak only French to the children.

“French is their first language,” he says.

“They’re very lucky. Their mother has spoken French to them since they were born.”

Kurz lived in Europe in his late teens and early 20s, working at a bar in Paris followed by

a stint at the BMW headquarters in Munich.

“I had this crazy idea I was going to marry a French girl,” he says. “I met her 10 years later [in 2009] in Sydney. My friends and I had just become the first ever Australians to climb Mount Kosciuszko wearing stubbies, thongs and singlets and thought we could drive to Sydney after that for a celebratory beer and that’s when I met her.”

Kurz has a tradition with four mates to explore a new part of Australia every year.

“Another great trip was in 2008 when we flew to Adelaide, packed up a car, drove from Adelaide to Uluru, then to Tennant Creek, Mount Isa and Brisbane in five days. We enjoyed the local pubs every single night. It probably wasn’t the world’s smartest thing to do but it was a great adventure.

“The last one we did was in the Northern Territory and the highlight of that trip was being stuck out in the middle of nowhere a long way from any food. We had some barramundi in foil in an esky and were trying to make the few hundred kilometres to the nearest store. We drove through a bushfire and there were smouldering logs so we said, hold on, we can do something with this. We pulled the barramundi out and put it on the fire and I said to the boys, this is literally one of the best moments of my life.”

Kurz has achieved a lot in his 36 years and has simple goals for the future.

“The most important goal I’ve got is at the age of 70 I can look back and say I’m content with what life was,” he says. “I always say to my wife, when we look back are we going to be content with what we did? You want your children to be safe and happy and grow up to be good adults.

“On a business basis, I would love to be able to venture into the big opportunities that come with making the planet more sustainable. I just spent a week in Germany looking at the different advances opening up in that area and it’s really intriguing. I’d love to be a part of that one day.”

hat’s the first thing you think of when it comes to Margaret River?

Chances are, it’s wine.

A total of 220 wine producers call the Western Australian pocket home, and they turn out more than a quarter of Australia’s

premium drops.

The region is so renowned for its wines that viticulture – the science, production and study of grapes – is taught at the local high school.

But away from the countless vineyards on the rolling green hills, something is brewing.

And it tastes nothing like shiraz.

Located a three-hour drive south of Perth, Margaret River has long been a bucket list destination for foodies and wine connoisseurs, but rarely one for those who prefer spirits or beer.

festival, held every year for the past five years, attracts the best of the best in cooking across the globe to celebrate the region’s food and drinks.

It was crowned the country’s Best Tourism Event at the Australian Event Awards in September.

Nigella Lawson, Rick Stein and two of the world’s best female chefs – Dominique Crenn and Ana Ros – all turned up in 2016.

Adam Liaw, Guy Grossi and Guillaume Brahimi pulled up a seat too, while executive chefs Aaron Carr (Vasse Felix), Seth James (Wills Domain) and Dany Angove (Leeuwin Estate) waved the Margaret River flag.

But much to my surprise as I wandered around the festival’s main attraction – the Gourmet Village, nestled in the grounds of Leeuwin Estate – I noticed revellers weren’t queuing for wine.

I joined them, shoulder-to-shoulder, outside Limeburners’ pop-up stall, as the Margaret River distillery sold countless bottles of its single malt whisky before completely running out of its official event gin.

Phillips, crowned WA Barman of the Year in 2015 and a WA finalist in this year’s The Perfect Blend national contest, says Morries reopened early last year as a darker, smaller cocktail bar after four years as a dawn-till-dusk cafe. “We went for breakfast, lunch, dinner, cocktails, wine bar, coffee shack,� Phillips says. “That was kind of what the town could’ve used back then, but a lot of other businesses opened up and places got more specialised. “It’s hard to sell cocktails at 8am. We’re all doing what we’re passionate about now.�

The local institution is packed every night of the week, with tasty small plates of masterstock pork belly, twice-cooked Japanese chicken, ‘drunken’ whitebait and venison carpaccio adorning the menu.

He says the idea of batching cocktails and producing drinks in bulk has made him think “more with a chef’s brain�. And it’s paying off. “I just kind of see what trends are going on everywhere and I’m always learning new techniques, using nitrogen, shrubs, making

my own bitters. “I guess it’s also about having a local approach, trying to use what we have here wherever and whenever possible.�

He says he dreams of one day offering a completely local and organic cocktail menu. “It’d be pretty cool if we could do that.

EYES OPENED TO CLIMATE CHANGE

The new maternity ward at the Sunshine Coast University Hospital will offer mums and bubs the luxury of total privacy, writes Sami Muirhead.

On a recent trip to Antarctica, Bill Darby was shocked by what he learnt about climate change and asks – will the Coast end up underwater?

B

irtinya is a suburb. It sounds a bit like a like a foot disease but it is a part of the Coast that is well and truly being thrust into the spotlight. It will be the place of birth printed on our little ones’ birth certificates later this month when the new maternity ward opens at the $1.8 billion-dollar Sunshine Coast University Hospital.

For decades Nambour hogged the fruit bowl with two birthing hospitals (one private and one public), which meant most of us had ‘Nambour’ stamped on our kids’ birth certificates.

The flash new hospital will boast 32 beds in the maternity wing, with no less than 14 birthing suites. It is all single rooms (hallelujah!) and each birthing suite has a spa bath for mums, a private ensuite with double-headed shower, and facilities so partners can stay overnight. This is wonderful news for our region.

Nambour Hospital has always had the most beautiful nurses and doctors, but we all heard the horror stories of mums labouring in cupboards and all over the place because there was simply not enough room. Our local mums and dads deserve a private room to recover and enjoy that once-in-a-lifetime moment of bonding with bub.

Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service chief executive Kevin Hegarty is proud of his new baby. With reason.

“Nambour is an older facility obviously, so yes the design at the University Hospital is

very contemporary”, says Mr Hegarty. “And yes it will have all single rooms but the most exciting thing is we will have the capability to care for more premature babies than what we can at the moment. At the moment we can handle the delivery of babies from around 33 weeks but we will now be able to do gestation periods from as low as 28 weeks. So at the moment those mums have to go to Brisbane to deliver but soon they will be able to stay on the Coast,” he adds.

And of course, having a baby does not always go as smoothly as it does in the movies so if a mum is having a rough time, the solace of a private room is a godsend after the craziness that is labour. You want to be able to leak and squirt and pace the floors in private. You do not need to know the lady in the bed next to you had 13 stitches and will probably never want to make out again after giving birth to a baby the size of a watermelon. You do not want to be woken up when your roommate turns on the lights to feed her bubba, because you are already a walking zombie. I am so happy that all women on the Coast will now be afforded this privilege of privacy.

The hospital is such a wonderful asset for our region. I am so excited about it as more of our family and friends will have the best of care. And if you are like me and stutter and stammer over just how exactly to say ‘Birtinya’, then just go with ‘Kawana’. I am thankful the powers that be didn’t go with the bordering suburb of Parrearra.

o tell you the honest truth, I’ve never given too much thought to the climate change debate. Having developed a healthy mistrust of politicians, all I can see is one big money grab all in the name of saving the planet.

We’re told that fossil fuel polluters are the devil incarnate and if we don’t start taxing big business, our great grandchildren won’t have a planet to live on.

On a recent holiday, a bunch of us from the Sunshine Coast decided to get all adventurous and visit the Antarctic. I guess we expected your typical cruise experience along with nice scenery.

We did of course see great scenery and wildlife, but the highlight was travelling with a highly skilled team of global experts on all things polar. Throughout the ten days, scientists, glaciologists, historians and wildlife experts passionately conveyed their relationship to this incredible continent.

One memory that sticks with me was a conversation I had with the ship’s glaciologist. This 30-something French woman knew a lot about ice. In a casual chat one night I asked what I thought was a reasonable question. I said, “Do you believe that global warming is man-made or just part of the cycle of climate change that occurs naturally as it has many times throughout history?”

She looked at me like I was an idiot. She then went on to ask (in a very animated way) if I realised polar ice both in the Antarctic

and the Arctic regions is currently melting 30 times faster than any other time in history?

Glaciers and the polar ice shelves that hold the continental ice in place, are deteriorating rapidly and the wildlife isn’t coping. This is the heartbreaking reality that impassions the people working in Antarctica and the Arctic Circle. We’ve all heard about the massive decline in the Arctic’s polar bear population. Equally sad is the effect on Antarctica’s penguins as rain replaces the dry

In the past few weeks it’s been revealed that an ice shelf the size of Trinidad and Tobago will soon separate from Antarctica.

This will lead to further destabilisation of glacial ice causing sea levels to rise.

Returning from Antarctica, I now care a lot less about what produces climate change.

It seems to me that irrespective of the cause, we simply need to find a way to address it.

Walking around penguin colonies littered with dead chicks is confronting, but it pales into insignificance compared to watching the coastal towns of the Sunshine Coast eventually end up underwater.

e have previously discussed in this column the major changes to superannuation coming into effect from

July 1, 2017.

Given the relatively short time frame for you to take advantage of the more generous current superannuation regulations, it is important that we briefly recap the coming changes and possible strategies to implement prior to July.

The concessional contribution cap will reduce to $25,000 per year. It is important that you review your employer contributions, including salary sacrifice to super, to ensure that not only do you take advantage of the higher concessional

contribution limit this financial year, but also that you do not exceed the lower limit next financial year.

Those people employed by large corporations who provide generous extra super contributions by matching additional contributions that the employee may make, will need to review if they should start making non-concessional contributions from July 1, to ensure they continue to take full advantage of the extra employer contributions. This is a complex area but one that requires your careful attention.

Currently the earnings and capital gains tax on the assets backing a Transition to Retirement (TTR) pension are tax free.

However, from July 1, earnings and realised capital gains on assets supporting TTR pensions are assessable to the super fund.

The pension payments a person receives remain tax free from age 60. Prior to July, it is important to review if you have satisfied a full condition of release and have the ability to convert your TTR pension to a regular account based pension, where the earnings of the fund

will remain tax free. If you do not satisfy a full condition of release, you should review if a TTR pension is still appropriate for you or if the funds are better in a superannuation accumulation account.

Another major change is the reduction in the non-concessional contribution cap (NCC) to $100,000 per year from the current limit of $180,000. It may be possible under current regulations for an individual to bring forward two years’ worth of contributions and make a NCC of $540,000, prior to the end of this financial year.

The final four months of this financial year provide the opportunity for some people to take advantage of the current relatively generous superannuation regulation – but you must act quickly.

HOME, HOME ON THE RANGE While arts and crafts and tourism now weaves a common thread through the Blackall Range towns, Maleny, Montville and Mapleton grew up quite separately, writes DOT WHITTINGTON.

Noosa Shire was officially declared on March 10, 1910. James Duke was elected first shire chairman on April 22. Five of the nine councillors were residents of the southern part of the shire who pushed for the office to be on the Cooroy Memorial Hall reserve. They hastily began building as ratepayers in the northern and central part of the shire were petitioning the Home Secretary for the office to be in Pomona. On November 29, 1910, Pomona won and the chambers remained there until December 1980.

ather than north-south connections with each other, the Range towns historically had a greater association with the townships below them, because of the transport routes to the east.

Landsborough was the feeder for Maleny, Palmwoods for Montville and Nambour for Mapleton.

The Blackall Range was named in honour of Sir Samuel Blackall, the Queensland Governor from 1864–1871, by the surveyor C.S. Bradbury in 1874.

Rich timber reserves first drew settlers to the hills, but this soon evolved into dairying in Maleny while the rich, red volcanic soil turned Montville and Mapleton into a fruit salad bowl. For new arrivals though, the biggest challenge of all was getting there.

The first white settler in Montville, Thorvald Peter Ludwig Weitenegar (also spelt Weitemeyer), a Danish timber-getter, and his Scottish wife, made their selection in Razorback (Montville) in June 1887.

Montville Historical Group reported in 1987: “Having heard of the rich soils and

fine timber on the Blackall Range he took passage with his wife and three children up the coast. The family and their belongings were landed on the beach and brought by bullock wagon to the bottom of the range, whence they walked, carrying their belongings up what was probably a track made by the Aborigines, up the Razorback ridge”.

Maleny, at the southern end of the range, was closest to the penal settlement of Moreton Bay and was the first port of call for timber-getters. Lured by the promise of cedar, ‘red gold’, they made the first tracks up the slopes through dense scrub from Mellum Creek (Landsborough).

Felled timber was hauled by bullock teams to the brink of the range and rolled down the slopes in ‘shutes’.

When 21-year-old William Smith and his 20-year-old brother Thomas were sent by their father to look for land to grow bananas in 1889, they took the train as far as it was constructed, to Caboolture, then a Cobb and Co coach to Woombye where they stayed overnight.

In the morning they set off for Petrie Creek (Nambour) and then travelled the 18 kilometres to what would become Mapleton, on foot, carrying heavy swags up rough, steep timber tracks to Dulong.

From there it was straight up to the top, 427 metres above sea level. The only tracks had been cut by the surveyors and it took them two days to beat their way through the thick scrub to the top.

David Williams married the Smith brothers’ sister Amy in 1892, and it is said that when they were returning from their honeymoon, the passenger trains made only infrequent trips. They rode in a coal hopper to Landsborough and then walked, with their belongings, to Mapleton.

Not surprisingly, the Smith brothers led early settlers in clearing a road up the range.

By 1895, there was a rough track used by drays, carts and wagons loaded with fruit until a road from Nambour to Mapleton was cleared and levelled in 1900. A year later, a road was made from Mapleton through Flaxton to Montville and the Montville-Palmwoods Road opened in 1929.

DID YOU KNOW? Early Mapleton settler David Williams, while on a mail delivery, broke a strong shoot off a pear tree to use as a riding whip. He stuck it in the ground on the roadside near his slab hut.

It was to become Mapleton’s historic pear tree (pictured above). It was blown over in October 1979 after 80 years of bearing large crops of stewing pears.

Frenzal Rhomb’s Lindsay McDougall talks to Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane about making it through more than two decades of rocking out.

T

he fast-paced life of a punk rock band is something Lindsay “The Doctor” McDougall thrives on.

From broken limbs to damaged instruments, McDougall has seen it all inside the mosh pit of the countless gigs he has performed alongside his Frenzal Rhomb bandmates.

The iconic Aussie outfit formed 25 years ago and were set to perform at the inaugural Monsoon RockStock festival on March 4.

It was ironic that weeks before the cancellation of the festival, McDougall told My Weekly Preview that his band was an 'Achilles heel' for festivals.

“We played Livid in Brisbane and then it turned out to be the last one ever. We were also in the line-up for the last Big Day Out and the last Homebake and we were set to play Soundwave when they announced that it was cancelled. “Maybe we are the Achilles heel, but we hope we will have

the opposite effect this time.”

Sadly, it was not meant to be, with festival organiser Jacob Stewart pulling the plug on the festival due to rising costs and poor ticket sales.

McDougall quips the band has been successfully “destroying things” for a quarter of a decade, but hopes to make it up to fans when their latest album is released in April.

“I’ve had bits of my guitar broken off and ended up missing a couple of tuning pegs at a gig because there was no wall between us and the crowd.

“Guys see that as the perfect opportunity to get up and put their arms around us and have a sing along. It is just guys, because the ladies are too smart to do it.

“I feel bad for some blokes, because they push their way to the front of the crowd and do their best to get up on stage and that’s as far as they’ve planned and they don’t quite know what do to, so they end up doing a bit of a Dude-Where’s-My-Car style dance and then the stage guys walk them off out of pity.”

McDougall also recalls the event where their drummer broke his arm during a stage dive before their set was over.

“We had random guys coming up on stage to help us get through the rest of our songs,” he says.

“He has a bionic arm now, so it’s invincible.”

PLUG IN AND TAKE OFF The BMW i3 94Ah Range Extender is like the Tardis – small on the outside, roomy on the inside and it will take you as far as you need to go on one recharge. Words: Peter Atkinson, AAP.

C

ars can make you feel good in a variety of different ways.

Some make you feel good by the way they look. Others by the way they sound, the way they take corners, or the way they accelerate.

BMW’s i3 makes you feel good by what it doesn’t do. It doesn’t use any petrol, for a start (well, most of the time).

It doesn’t produce any carbon emissions (again, most of the time). And it doesn’t make any sound. And because of all

that, it doesn’t have any noticeable impact on our fragile environment.

Yet it’s quietly changing the way a number of Australians think about their private transportation.

The electric i3 is now three years on the

market – and recently underwent a facelift that delivered a number of improvements.

Key among those is a boost in the distance it can travel between battery recharges. Which also boosts the amount you can enjoy those features listed above.

BMW boasts that it now has 100,000 electric-powered vehicles on the road globally – including 60,000 i3s and about 10,000 of its larger, futuristic-looking i8 sports cars.

The remainder fall under the Bavarian brand’s range of so-called “i-performance” machines – effectively hybrid models with plug-in charging capacity that can run largely on electric power during the week and revert to conventional petrol power when the journeys are longer.

BMW is promising more plug-in models plus pure electric Minis and BMW X3 models over the next couple of years.

In the meantime, though, the use of ‘range extender’ engines as a backup to pure electric power is a useful and credible stopgap. And in that context, this updated i3 represents a substantial leap forward.

Thanks to a co-operative effort between BMW and electronics giant Samsung, battery capacity has been greatly expanded to allow the i3 to travel more than 200km on a full charge. If you choose the optional rangeextender generator engine (a $6000 option) you can stretch your combined range to almost 350km, which is as far as most families

The car can then be recharged in one of three ways – at home using BMW’s recommended I Wallbox (delivering 80 per cent charge in eight hours); at a dedicated recharging station (80 per cent charge in four hours) or via a conventional home powerpoint (80 per cent charged in 14 hours).

How does the cost compare? Well, it’s estimated that electric vehicles cost about 4.5 cents per kilometre to run (versus about $15 cents/km for a typical petrol vehicle) – based on an electricity cost of 35 cents per kilowatt hour. That means a full 200km charge will add about $10 to your electricity bill.

The new model is, rather unromantically, called the i3 94Ah (representing 94 Amperehours) – and our test machine came with the option of an additional range extender generator engine.

That means a premium price of $71,900 plus onroads – with i3 prices starting at $63,900 for the entry-level model.

It was one of the more interesting road tests we’ve done recently.

The design, while not exactly pretty, is deceptive. At first glance it looks tiny – not quite Smart car-like, but you’d swear it’s got the dimensions of the smallest city cars. Yet put it beside one of those little hatchbacks and the Beemer is taller and wider than you might imagine.

Those compact exterior dimensions

conceal a surprisingly spacious interior.

The unusual ‘suicide’ doors at the rear – so called because they hinge at the back and open from the front – provide wide open access to the two rear seats.

There’s 260 litres of cargo space in the rear – 1100 with the rear seats folded down – plus another handy 35L beneath the front bonnet if needed.

The cockpit design is also a distinct departure from convention – more bitsy than the cohesive look typical of this brand – and using weight-saving and environmentallyfriendly materials not found elsewhere in the BMW range.

Seat trims include recycled polyester and 40 percent pure wool; sustainable eucalyptus is used on feature panels all aluminium used

in the car’s construction is recycled.

It’s a fun thing to drive – although not necessarily in the typical BWM style.

Acceleration is surprising, thanks to 250Nm of torque and 125 kilowatts – which is instantly available because of the electric propulsion setup. It whizzes to the speed limit in just over seven seconds.

Its handling is competent but not up to the razor-sharp standard we’ve come to expect from Bavarian machines. Turned sharply into corners it feels prone to understeer – a trait magnified by the very skinny rubber on the i3 – necessary to reduce rolling resistance as part of its energy-saving mission.

It is a breeze to park with its tight 9.8m turning circle. Ride is generally good but occasionally a little choppy over rough or undulating surfaces – again a product of its tallish design and short wheelbase.

There are three driving modes – but no Sport mode we’ve come to expect from BMWs. In standard Comfort mode the driver has access to the car’s full performance potential – but switch to Eco Pro and power output is restricted.

In full Eco Pro Plus mode, all ancillary services are disabled and performance even further dialled back.

Our week in the i3 ended up with almost 300km covered – one overnight recharge from the standard electric plug in our garage – and we handed it back with about 55km charge still remaining. Best of all, not a drop out of the petrol tank.

You have to feel good about that.

BMW i3 94Ah RANGE EXTENDER HOW BIG? Its short, nimble design makes it the ideal city car – yet all four occupants get more than enough room in its airy, glassy cabin. It’s a breeze to park, too.

HOW FAST? It will burn off most rivals away from the lights, thanks to the instantly-available thrust of its electric motors. Top speed is limited to 150km/h.

HOW THIRSTY? Thirsty? Well, not at all unless you exceed the 200km limit of its batteries. We averaged 0L/100km during our week-long test – honestly.

HOW MUCH? It’s not cheap considering its size – with even the cheapest i3 costing more than $60-grand. Still, it’s well equipped – and think of all the money you’ll save on petrol.

GET READY FOR THE CONCEPT X-CLASS

T

he Concept X-Class powerful adventurer touched down in Melbourne for the first time early last week.

It’s a sign that preparations are underway for the highly anticipated release of the new Mercedes-Benz X-Class in 2018.

Following on from its October launch in Stockholm Sweden last year, the Concept X-Class was flown in from Germany for a number of promotional activities, including a series of photo shoots which placed the vehicle in typical Australian settings.

The photos will be used for various promotional materials supporting the launch activities.

It also featured at the Mercedes-Benz Vans Australia

and New Zealand National Dealer Conference held in Melbourne.

The dealer network received a detailed briefing on the vehicle from Christian Pohl, global head of product management and marketing for X-Class, who was also in the country supporting the local team ahead of next year’s official arrival.

Managing director Mercedes-Benz Vans Australia and New Zealand Diane Tarr says: “Australia and New Zealand are critical markets for the success of the X-Class.”

“The concept has been flown from Germany so our dealers can get a detailed briefing about the vehicle and continue their preparation for a successful launch of the X-Class in 2018.”

Demand continues to grow for property near the Sunshine Coast University Hospital, which is set to open next month.

In the past 18 months, the RGD Group has sold 200 waterfront apartments across four projects, all of them adjacent to the new hospital.

Hello kiddies, I am back from riding pristine powder in North America and records were set. I even witnessed possibly one of the greatest wipeouts from a skier ever – after seeing him fall from a run called The Cliff for what seemed an eternity, he finally came to rest 300 metres from his fatal first turn. Once I realised he was OK, I rode down to congratulate him on being rag-dolled so far. On the home front, looks like a few small waves around and is it just me or are we so, so overdue for cyclone or big low pressure system? Let’s hope it hits for the Quiksilver Pro and Owen Wright has a great return.

Mud crabs working down steam from Bli Bli with better results using whole mullet cut in two as bait. Flathead on plastics under the high rise buildings along Duporth Avenue.

SURF: Low tide gutters producing tarwhine, sand whiting and flathead from Mudjimba to Pincushion using yabbies, pippies and cured beach worms. A few tailor around the Maroochy Bar just after dark, with the odd jew taking bigger baits.

OFFSHORE: When conditions allow the close in reefs of Coolum, Gneerings and Currimindi working well for mixed reef fish with dawn and dusk best.

Pillies or squid returning better quality fish. The Barwon Banks for pearlies, rosy job fish and squire.

Mackeral around, you need to search to find them.

FRESHWATER: Lake McDonald hasn’t the volume of fish as the bigger impoundments, but will always return a bass or golden perch on medium diving lures with red and black preferred. Lake Boondooma another great place for both seasoned anglers and beginners with bass, golden perch and red claw available.

he last time I went to Bali I took five books and didn’t get past the first chapter of one. It was my eldest son’s first overseas trip and at nine months old, I had underestimated the effect he would have on my holiday binge-reading.

For my recent return with the now eight-yearold son and his six-year-old brother, I was more realistic and only brought a single book, which my wife promptly stole on the first night.

But it was still a relaxing break, if travelling with two boys 24/7 can ever be described in such a way.

Although for the first part of the trip I couldn’t say we exactly immersed ourselves in the local culture – more like skimmed along the surface with the occasional Balinese phrase and prayer-hands greeting.

We floated on comfortable full-body cushions in a pool the size of a couple of football fields. Well I tried – my boys weren’t too keen to see me switch off completely and made regular incursions into my piece of paradise.

Mostly I’d abandon ship and return to the safety of the shore to try and read a chapter or two of Donna Tartt’s The Goldfinch, which I’d swiped from the hotel’s library.

But inevitably after a page or two, I’d have to resume my maritime pursuits with my boys seemingly intent on sailing over the edge of the infinity pool to experience the six-floor drop at the end of this man-made flat earth experiment.

But when we did emerge from this reality-challenged cocoon we were soon rewarded – our visit to a village in the Balinese countryside was the highlight of the holiday.

Our boys attended a local school, did some ploughing (my youngest called it cowing because two oxen pulled the farming equipment) and learnt all about family temples.

It was during a conversation with our guide that I had my ‘moment’ while away.

He was explaining the Balinese term ‘Taksu’ – which roughly translates to charisma, to talk from the heart, one with great character – when it struck me he was describing an old friend of mine who had passed away just the night before.

Last year I wrote a column on Michael Rauch – a camera operator I used to work with when I was a television reporter. A man I admired greatly but had lost touch with when life got busy. He was diagnosed with lung cancer last year, despite never having smoked a cigarette in his life.

Just a matter of months later, he was gone. I was grateful for the one last chat I had with him to tell him how much he meant to me and how he’d influenced my life. But I was still at a loss to find the right words to explain why he was such a special person – he just had a way about him that made others feel good about themselves.

In Bali I found that word. Taksu.

And for me, that’s worth more than reading a dozen books by the pool. olearylastword@gmail.com
