ho doesn’t love a good wedding? I, for one, enjoy celebrating the love and commitment between two people. Weddings and commitment ceremonies are a beautiful reminder of the good things in life – love, friendship, family.

Of course, it’s also a great excuse to dress up and have some fun. And today’s weddings generally guarantee guests plenty of fun and generate wonderful memories.

However, modern weddings don’t come cheap – Bride to Be magazine’s Cost of Love Survey 2015 put the figure at a whopping $65,482. This edition, My Weekly Preview celebrates all things ‘wedding’ and discovers that it doesn’t take thousands of dollars to create the perfect day.

My first job was in administration for the department of services and property in Darwin. I grew up in the Northern Territory, my father was transferred there from Adelaide through his government position. I was seven at the time and lived there for 20 years.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU LIVED HERE? I have lived on the Sunshine Coast and surrounds for 30-odd years. I remember seeing it for the first time and thinking I would make this gorgeous place my home.

WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY WORKING ON?

WHY DO YOU LIVE HERE?

I am currently designing a red carpet gown for a young Australian film director. She is wearing it to the premiere of her latest movie in Brisbane. I love this kind of project, it gives me a chance to do something incredibly glamorous and extraordinary. I love the glamorous world, probably partly due to the fact that there wasn’t much of it around in my childhood.

The lifestyle on the Coast ticks all the boxes for me. It is relaxed yet offers so much – world-class dining, some of the best beaches and it’s close to everything.

IF YOU COULD CHANGE ONE THING ON THE COAST, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

FAVOURITE PLACE? I love Bribie Island. My husband and I kayak over and walk the beach. It’s so isolated and unspoilt.

My four gorgeous kids, two girls and two boys, all living on the Coast. A beautiful little grandson Enzo who has changed our world for the better, my husband and his two children, a daughter in Sydney and a son in New Zealand. My family is my world.

WHAT ACHIEVEMENT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF? My children. They have all grown into productive, amazing adults. They add much to society and I am immensely proud of them. I’m proud also of my business success to date. I started on a shoestring and it has grown to be a label known internationally. I am incredibly proud to have taken first place at the Australian Bridal Industry Awards for Couture Design Queensland and be the winner of The Sunshine Coast Fashion Festival Couture Designer. It is also a huge honour to have been asked to create gowns for the ARIAs for the past two years.

FIRST CAR? An old Kombi van, all decked out with a bed, a fridge and a cooking facility. I went thirds in it with my big sister and my bestie. I was 18. We painted it with flowers. We were light-hearted and fancy free. We drove around Australia stopping to pick grapes in the Barossa Valley to fund our journey up the West Coast to home.

FAVOURITE BOOK? I love biographies. I recently read Turia Pitt’s book, Everything To Live For. Her strength and determination is inspiring.

WHAT ARE YOU READING NOW? Tony Robbins. Anything that motivates me and propels me to success. I have recently discovered Audible, it allows me to work and listen to a book at the same time.

FAVOURITE SONG? I am showing my age here but my favourite song is Hotel California. My friend Kathy and I played the Eagles on our trip around Australia so it brings back memories of freedom, fun and discovery.

Slow down the growth. Like everything beautiful, we all want to be part of it. Its growing at such a rapid rate it seems the roads and infrastructure struggle to keep up.

BEST DAY IN YOUR LIFE? The day my four babies were born were definitely the best days of my life. I cannot imagine life without them.

CAN YOU NOMINATE A DAY IN YOUR LIFE THAT TURNED OUT TO BE A TURNING POINT? My father took our family to Timor for a holiday from Darwin when I was 13. It opened my mind to travel, showed me how interesting and diverse the world is. I will never forget the sights, sounds and smells and the excitement of discovering other cultures. I see the influence from my early travels reflected in my work as a couture designer.

ADVICE TO YOUR 18-YEAR-OLD SELF? Be bolder, braver and more confident and don’t waste time holding back and worrying what people think. To follow my heart and have self-worth.

An important part of this process was the opportunity for locals to provide their views and a number of interesting questions on topics ranging from building design and jobs to the impact of lighting on turtles and cycle and pedestrian paths through the village were raised.

One that stood out to the project team was about height and visual impact: “I’m very concerned about what the roofing materials will look like. At this moment the existing development is a sea of white, highly

reflective roofing which is jarring. How will this construction seek to soften that visual impact quickly?”

The “existing development” the questioner refers to is the current approval for our site which allows for the clear-felling of all vegetation on the property and the import of significant fill to construct a gated residential estate of two to four storey (16 metre) residential dwellings and apartments.

We have made the point very openly that any development on our site – which is a disused golf course – will be seen from Mt Coolum. But our new proposal will ensure that sea of white roofs won’t be repeated, and it will not interrupt the views to the beach and Pacific Ocean from Mt Coolum.

WEDDINGS GONE WILD Dogs in tuxedos, fireworks, choppers and ring-bearing owls – Australians are in the grip of a wedding fever so contagious we’re spending upwards of a house deposit on creating the most memorable day imaginable. But how much is too much? WORDS: Leigh Robshaw.

would have made no sense to generations past – wedding insurance. After the much publicised closure of several Sunshine Coast wedding venues recently, it is now seen as a necessity. Murray says Maleny Manor is the first wedding venue to offer it in Australia.

“A wedding can cost as much as a car – you don’t want to drive around with your wedding on your shoulders,” says Murray.

While Maleny Manor has won many awards, including Australia’s Number 1 Reception Venue at the 2016 Australian Bridal Industry Academy Awards, Murray is surprised she doesn’t get many bookings from hinterland locals.

“You will find anyone who is cashed up usually goes out of their region,” Murray says.

“The spend of the wedding keeps growing because people are utilising the whole region.

It’s not just about Maleny or Noosa or Mooloolaba – it’s the region. It’s so diverse.”

While Murray says classic elegance will never go out of style, couples are increasingly looking to personalise their weddings. No longer does the groom have to stand nervously at the altar waiting for his bride to walk down the aisle. The latest trend is for the groom to make his own entrance by chopper.

“We get more choppers than cars – it has become a real thing,” Murray says. “The boys love it. The bride has spent four hours in hair and makeup and the groom doesn’t usually get a big arrival. Our guests will be mingling and then they’ll see a chopper getting closer and closer, the music starts, the boys land on our helipad and it feels very James Bondish.”

ustralia is in the grip of a wedding fever so monumental it’s driving couples to spend the equivalent of a house deposit on their nuptials and spend their evenings watching strangers get married on TV for entertainment. The February 14 episode of Channel Nine’s Married at First Sight beat Channel Seven’s My Kitchen Rules in the ratings, the first time the cooking show has fallen off its number one pedestal in eight years.

The Valentine’s Day Married at First Sight episode averaged 1.024 million viewers across the five capital cities, proving Australians love a wedding – big or small, real or staged.

Statistics on the average cost of a wedding are highly variable. Bride to Be magazine’s Cost of Love Survey 2015 put the figure at a whopping $65,482, while the 2016 Annual Australian Wedding Survey from website Easy Weddings, which surveyed more than 2300 couples, put the figure at $30,985.

Either way, Australians are investing a lot of time and money to ensure their wedding day is the most memorable day of their lives.

It’s a phenomenon Maleny Manor manager Marlene Murray has noticed growing over the past 20 years and exploding with the influence of social media.

“When we arrived 19 years ago people said, you may as well give up now, no one will do weddings in Maleny. Back then people either went to halls or wherever was close – your church or a club. There were not designated wedding venues. It has evolved so much, it’s now big business. We have receptions that cost $30,000 to $60,000 and $100,000 is not unthinkable if you add on the big overseas honeymoon. It’s not uncommon to have $10,000 worth of styling and florals.

“When we started it was just a chair bow and bomboniere, that was about it. Now it’s a whole themed event, you’ll find people have Pinterest boards dedicated to their wedding.

Instagram is a huge vortex. Our brides gather ideas from social media, but then they want to personalise it. It’s as if the world has opened up in weddings. You can either get the luxury car that’s worth $100,000 or buy the runaround. If you went to LA and looked at weddings you would die – you’re talking half a million.”

Murray is on the wedding committee for Hinterland Tourism and says weddings bring an estimated $50 million to the Sunshine Coast hinterland annually – and that’s just between Maleny and Mapleton.

“It’s just going off the Richter scale,” she says. “It’s one of the most sought-after areas.

It’s all about the scenery. We have people coming from Sydney, Melbourne, London.”

She had two weddings in 2010, a small affair in Tasmania and a big bash in Buderim with 220 guests and 14 dogs. “We had a wedding very much catering for adults, kids and dogs,� she says. “We had croquet, we had a fairy swinging in a tree who did circus tricks, we had a kissing cave for the adults and we had fireworks.�

enough. But dogs? “We had great danes, poodles, beagles and our three little shitzus,� she says. “We had little tuxedos made for our three boys. Some of my friends who aren’t dog people thought it was weird and random and stupid, but our dogs are like our children, they’re such a big part of our life, so that’s why we wanted them to be part of our wedding. All the dogs were dressed up, whether they were wearing tutus or ribbons. We had doggy cupcakes and doggy cookies for them to eat. They all chilled out and there was no weeing on anyone.�

Sunshine Coast wedding cake designer Lorinda Rogers made an eye-popping seven-tier multicoloured cake as a gift and Muirhead says while she splurged on food and entertainment, she saved in other areas. “I did lots of second-hand shopping. I found beautiful old linen napkins, I got my veil from the Salvos on Aerodrome Road, we did our own flowers and decorations and the fireworks were a gift from one of my bridesmaids. “It was so much fun, everywhere I looked it was fun – a riot of colour.�

Having seen wedding trends come and go, Murray says what’s most important is class, quality and remembering what getting married is all about. “People are spending a lot, but it’s all about family and genuine love,� she says. “They’re still very wrapped up in the concept of getting married, but they want it very private. I think people should just try to keep it real while going with as much quality as they can afford.�

Muirhead says people should have whatever wedding they like, on one condition: “I really do think it’s a very individual thing how much people spend. If that’s your bag and you want it to be bigger than Ben Hur that’s great, but I think people can lose the symbolic meaning. It’s a union of people it’s not a competition to have the most expensive dress, the most expensive champagne. You need to keep that feeling of genuine love and if you can make things yourself, it adds a beautiful touch.�

DOING AWAY WITH TRADITION On Christmas Eve 2016, Buderim couple Russell and Jacqui Dell decided to do away with tradition and have a surprise wedding at a friend’s house, without telling anyone in advance. The couple has a family custom of holding a Christmas Eve gathering each year so with their closest family members already planning to turn up, they took the opportunity to tie the knot.

Both had been married before in big traditional weddings and had no desire to walk that path again. “Because it’s a regular event we do on Christmas Eve we were able to keep it under the radar,� says Russell. “It was a massive cost saving but that wasn’t the driver for it.� “I had my gown, flowers and the wedding cake hidden upstairs, so I disappeared and Russell made an announcement that we were getting married,� says Jacqui. “A lot of people were surprised,� adds Russell. “People were happy but naturally, there was a bit of emotion – most of it from me. I’m a big sook.�

Russell and Jacqui work for Grant Smith of Century 21 real estate in Buderim, who shared his home as the venue. “Grant walked me down the stairs and my little boy was waiting at the bottom,� Jacqui says. “Having it so private it was a lot more emotional than the first time around. “I bought a standard dress from Forever New and had it altered. I did my own makeup

The couple knew they’d put a few noses out of joint, so they organised a gathering at Corbould Park Raceway when they returned from their honeymoon in Bali. “I’m super glad we stuck to our guns and did it our way,� says Jacqui. “We had a good time, we did it the way we wanted to do it,� says Russell. “There were times when we could have buckled to the pressure to please everyone else, but at the end of the day, we had the wedding we wanted. We got to do it without going crazy and breaking the bank. It was a really beautiful, intimate, quiet ceremony. Having the kids there adds to the emotion of the day.

A team has been tasked with testing every one of them as the hospital reaches commissioning stage. Staff are ensuring the building is ready to transition, systems are operational and the equipment is safe and in place. Operational Commissioning SCUH Program director Angela Bardini says there is a significant focus on staff training and familiarisation and more than 1000 staff have attended training.

Cleaning crews have also been kept busy, with the equivalent of 15 football fields of carpet being cleaned before the March opening.

NEW ROUNDABOUT TO RESHAPE FOREST GLEN Construction of a new $2.6million roundabout at the intersection of Mons Road and Owen Creek Road in Forest Glen has begun. The upgrades will improve traffic flow and will also include cycle lanes and landscaping. A northern leg of the roundabout Councillor Ted Hungerford at the existing intersection, in front of Owen Creek Road will also be constructed to service future development sites. LOCAL CHARITIES JOIN FORCES TO KEEP DV VICTIMS SAFE

A

lthough Rosie Batty forced the nation to confront our domestic violence problem during her time as 2015 Australian of the Year, the Sunshine Coast continues to experience a high level of domestic violence across all socioeconomic categories.

Queensland Police Service figures show there have been 1660 domestic violence applications on the Coast in the past 12 months. This was up from 1018 in the same period the year before.

The number of breaches of domestic violence orders in the region also rose from 733 in 2014-15 to 1018 in 2015-16.

While there is still a lot of work to be done in domestic violence prevention, families fleeing domestic violence situations will be a lot safer on the Sunshine Coast thanks to the fundraising efforts of local charities.

After more than six years of fundraising, construction has begun on the Zonta Club of Caloundra’s Restart in a Safe Environment (RISE) project, which will provide a safe house and short-term accommodation for women and children escaping domestic violence.

Andrew Elvin, CEO of Coast2Bay Housing Coast2Bay Housing (C2B) came on board with a generous $100,000 contribution towards the half a million dollar project and will be responsible for the ongoing maintenance and management of the house, which is located on the southern end of the Coast.

The two organisations joined forces with

an ambitious goal of raising $90,000 in 90 days last year and received overwhelming support from the community.

RISE project chair Marilyn Holness has been at the helm of the fundraising efforts since the idea of domestic violence accommodation was first discussed.

“Back then, the biggest challenge was the topic of domestic violence. Prior to 2015, nobody wanted to know about it despite the appalling statistics of one in four women being affected by domestic violence,” Holness says.

“Thankfully Rosie Batty raised the profile, and now we are seeing remedial courses offered to perpetrators to change their behaviour. In the meantime, we cannot leave vulnerable women and children in fear on a daily or weekly basis.”

The RISE house will temporarily accommodate two families for up to six months while they find suitable longer term accommodation and stability.

The Salvation Army will also provide professional assistance to the tenants to help them to adjust in a safer environment.

Chrissy Moon and her love Nathan were the first Sunshine Coast couple married through the My Wedding Wish charity organisation, which gifts weddings to couples who are fighting extreme health battles and cannot afford a beautiful white wedding.

Founder Dr Lynette Maguire says Chrissy, who lost her battle with terminal cancer almost two years after her 2013 wedding, inspired her in many ways.

“She was so courageous in her battle and had such a beautiful, positive outlook and nothing was too much trouble for her. She never said ‘why me?’,” Maguire says.

“She lit up every room with her smile and she impacted all who met her.”

elcome to week five of the school term. For those of you playing at home with kids who are yet to graduate, you will know this means we are halfway through the famous battle also known as Do-YourBest-To Get To-The-End of-Term OneWithout-Losing-Your-Sanity.

It is an easy won battle compared to the one that comes in term four, known as the battle of I-Am-Going-To-Stab-EveryoneWith-A-Blunt-Butter-KnifeBecause-Our-Whole-FamilyIs-So-Damn-Tired.

And for those of you who do not have school-aged children, well, it is still good to know when to avoid the school holiday crowds and stressed out mums that come with those hordes.

The weeks are busy. They are a blur of taxi driving kids, keeping bread without mould near, shuffling the little people out the door to sport and other activities, galloping through readers or homework at night so we can throw those tired monkeys into bed and pack school bags and lunches before finally having a wine and attacking the blueprint (and all it entails) for the next day. And repeat.

Those of you who read this column on a regular basis (thanks Mumsy), know I am in the camp that loves school holidays. I don’t get those parents who detest the break. For

our family, no school means we can eat fish fingers for breakfast at 10am and stay in pyjamas if we want to. It also means movies with choc tops and frosty air conditioning.

And there are so many great movies due out in the next six months. But they are mostly old favourites that are being re-made or as the cool kids say these days, re-booted.

Because I am a bit of a loser, because I am such a romantic, and because I need dreamy, really pathetic distractions in life, I am of course counting down the weeks until we get to once again feast on the big screen of a tale as old as time: Disney’s Beauty And The Beast.

Belle is back baby with her leading Beast. It is released in Australia on March 23 and it stars Emma Watson. This classic has one of the best soundtracks.

The hot duo singing the title track from the live-animated movie is Ariana Grande and John Legend. When the animated version was released 26 years ago, Celine Dion and Peabo Bryson sang the title track.

Nearly three decades ago people – how is that even possible?

This time, Ewan McGregor sings Be Our Guest. Old Ewan can sing, remember him in Moulin Rouge? And if you aren’t already feeling old, here’s another crazy fact: Ewan has four daughters and one is in her 20s.

olunteering was a word that had not entered my vocabulary until last year. As a working mother of two, I was focused on the day-to-day routine that comes with having young children.

But all of that changed when my eldest went to a community kindergarten.

I ended up on the executive committee and I found it extremely rewarding knowing we were working towards a better facility, not only for our kids, but also the future children who would go there.

Parents who couldn’t volunteer extensively did what they could, spending a morning covering books for the kindy library, or helping with crafts. It created a real sense of community and brought us all closer together.

So when the time came for my eldest to venture off to prep, I volunteered to spend a couple of hours every Friday helping the students in her class with their sight words by playing games and reading to them (or them to me, as it turned out). But alas, there entered the regulation dragon.

My only condition was that I bring along my three-year-old, as Fridays are one of our only mummy-son days.

This was OK with the teacher and in one morning, I was able to help almost half of the class with some extra reading activities – something the teacher was struggling to do with her largest class ever at this school.

My pre-schooler found a bucket of

plastic ocean animals and was entranced.

You literally couldn’t see or hear him as he squirrelled himself away between the white board and the home corner.

Despite this, I was contacted by the teacher to say I couldn’t come to help unless I was on my own. This wasn’t an order from her, but was ‘school policy’.

All three of us were upset by this. The teacher was crying out for volunteers to help and she had not only lost me, but two other mums as well because of this policy.

I was upset because I enjoyed having the opportunity to see my daughter in her class environment, meet her new school friends and help them with their learning.

My daughter was upset because she was thrilled to have me there and felt proud she had a mum who was willing to spend time in the classroom.

So, who exactly are the winners of this policy? It sure isn’t the students.

We live in an age where it is becoming increasingly hard to get volunteers of any sort – from Rotary and View club members to environmental group participants, school committees, SES and op shop workers.

Speak to any volunteer organisation and they will quickly tell you this is their greatest challenge. So why, when people are willing and able to help, are parents being turned away because of something so trivial?

In this case, it is the kids who are the real losers in the equation and that doesn’t sit right with me at all.

BUDERIM FARMERS DECIDE ON A TRAM TO GET THEIR PRODUCE TO MARKET The farmers of Buderim, struggling to get their bountiful crops to market, came up with an idea for a tramway and, for 21 years, Palmwoods was the terminus for a link with the main North Coast railway. WORDS: Dot Whittington.

n 1903, Buderim farmers approached Maroochy Shire Council for funds to construct a tramway to transport their produce to Woombye, or even the Diddillibah terminus of the Moreton Sugar Mills tramway.

They were unsuccessful and tried again in 1907, this time approaching the Queensland Treasury.

This time, they suggested building a line over one of the two formerly proposed routes but also came up with a third, Palmwoods. The Department of Agriculture turned them down.

Finally, in 1910, promoters convinced Mr Phillips, an engineer, to make a trial survey of a route between Palmwoods and Buderim. The 83 ratepayers on the proposed benefit area were sure that their choice of route was right even though construction and running costs would be higher than a route to Nambour.

They asked Maroochy Shire Council to apply for a loan of £21,000 to cover plans, specifications and estimated costs of construction and balanced it against expected revenue.

Before the loan was approved in 1912, the Palmwoods to Buderim route was

inspected by the Commissioner of Railways.

The chief engineer in charge of railway surveys gave it his approval as “the most feasible from an engineering point of view”.

As the original loan was considered insufficient for construction and equipment, the Treasurer granted a loan of up to £26,500.

Resumptions, labour and materials proved more expensive than planned but the promoters still believed the line had to go through at all costs and the loan was increased by £3500 in 1914 – and again in 1915.

Difficulties were also experienced with linking the line to the government railway at Palmwoods, which helped inflate the loan to £36,000 pounds by the time the line was finally opened at the end of 1914.

The first locomotive, bought new from Krauss in 1914, was quite a large engine for a Queensland narrow gauge line but was efficient, economical and fast.

The second, a Shay bought in 1915, was much larger and although powerful, was slow and heavy on coal.

The engines were black with red buffer beams and ran chimney first towards Buderim and last on the way back, as there

was no way to turn them. A passenger carriage had an interior arranged as a saloon with cushioned seats facing inwards.

Windows were glazed and the ride was reasonably comfortable. For the goods, there were four tonne open wagons with drop sides for general merchandise and flat timber bolster wagons.

The late Bill Atkinson of Palmwoods, whose mother was the first postmistress/ station mistress at Forest Glen, recalled that there was never a serious accident on the line, although, “one Saturday afternoon the guard’s van left the line at Cape Horn, the most southern part, and John Atkinson put it back on the rails and braked it down to Forest Glen”.

And once, while a Mr Pope was working the little engine Krauss, he “placed the selector in the wrong way so that it went backwards when forward was selected”.

The tram made six trips a week and two extra fruit trips on Tuesday and Friday.

During the strawberry season, there was a Saturday afternoon trip.

The line closed in 1935, and on its last journey down the hill, the rails were lifted behind it as it went. Parts of the old route can still be explored today.

In February 1984, the first meeting was mooted for Landsborough and Maroochy shire councils to discuss construction of the Baroon Pocket Dam. The Maroochy/Landsborough Water Board was formed but little more was done until after the local government elections of March 1985.

DID YOU KNOW? • The first sawmill opened in Mapleton on January 1, 1909. It was destroyed by fire and rebuilt near the hall. It was destroyed by fire again in 1924 and again rebuilt, then closed for a few years during the Depression.

It was finally closed down in 1972.

• In 1903, Thomas O’Connor purchased all of the bankrupted William Pettigrew’s Mooloolaba and Maroochydore properties from the Union Bank, making him one of the most significant figures in Cotton Tree and Maroochydore after the turn of the new century.

O

rd Minnett has resumed coverage of the telecommunications sector, noting that structural changes in the wake of industry restructuring are presenting opportunities for investors.

Tailwinds remain strong in the mobile market, with our base case assuming a three-player market. The Australian mobile market is one of the more attractive markets in the world due to the three-player dynamic and strong population growth.

We expect increasing data usage and mobile device proliferation to support continued growth in the industry. There is potential for a new entrant from the 700MHz re-auction in April, but our base

case assumes it remains a three-player market due to the expensive and lengthy network build with uncertain returns.

The National Broadband Network (NBN) is expected to continue pressuring margins for the incumbents but creates an opportunity to invest in operators, such as Vocus Communications, which are poised for accelerated growth over the next four to five years, aided by growth in data usage.

New entrants could potentially put pressure on prices, but we expect faster speeds and higher data limits to offset pressure on pricing.

We have initiated on Vocus Communications with a buy recommendation and a December 2017 target price of $5.25. Vocus is the best-positioned of the major players as recent acquisitions put the company in a strong position from a product and network perspective. With the smallest fixed-line broadband share, we expect the company to benefit from the forced churn and accelerated fixed broadband adoption, on top of steady growth from its corporate business. Vocus currently trades at 6.9 times FY18E enterprise value to operating

the NBN expected to reduce operating earnings by some $2–3 billion annually and the potential for mobile roaming regulations and new entrants. BLUE SKY BUSINESS WHIZZ TO SHOW US HOW IT’S DONE Business maverick Mark Sowerby says the Sunshine Coast has the most impressive startup culture in Queensland. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw.

I

magine being set for life by the age of 45. That’s the position Mark Sowerby is in, having left his company Blue Sky Alternative Investments to take up a pro bono role and spend more time with his two teenaged sons.

Last year, Sowerby left the company he founded in Brisbane in 2006, after it posted a record net profit of $10.5 million. He took Blue Sky from a startup to Australia’s only listed funds manager focused on alternative assets, with $2.1 billion in private equity, real estate, hedge fund strategies and real assets.

In October 2016 he was appointed Queensland’s First Chief Entrepreneur, a new role designed to give Queensland startups a leg-up and in March he’ll visit the Coast to share some of his top tips for local entrepreneurs and innovators.

“It was supposed to be a part-time role but it has been pretty busy,” he says. “For the first three months it was a bit crazy. It feels like a real charitable social good opportunity.

I’ve been travelling the state, visiting all the regional areas and getting a feel for what structures are in place, where things are happening and where things are not happening.

I’m trying to get the message out around entrepreneurship and what really works. That’s for the first six months of the role. For the second six months of my role, we’ll try to get the rubber to hit the road a bit.”

After recent visits to the Coast for events at the University of the Sunshine Coast and the Innovation Centre, Sowerby says we top the state in regards to our startup activity.

“There’s something unusual and exciting happening on the Sunshine Coast,” he says. “I’m a structure freak and the structural pieces are in place around the innovation hub and the university and its culture. It feels to me a like the Sunshine Coast, after the GFC, decided to do something about controlling its destiny.

“My sense is that the Sunshine Coast has the most interesting startup and scaleup culture in the state. There are some unique elements – the new greenfield CBD, for example.

You need a mothership – a home for business. There’s also the new hospital, the development of Kawana and the University of the Sunshine Coast, which is very impressive. The quality of businesses I saw on the pitch day were very high. It’s a very supportive community, a great environment, it’s close enough to Brisbane to get access to the things it needs but far enough away to have its own identity.”

Sowerby will address a business breakfast in Caloundra on March 17 and plans to talk about the difference between innovation and entrepreneurship and what Sunshine Coast businesspeople can do to achieve the kind of stratospheric success he has enjoyed.

Chief Entrepreneur role. I’m on the board of Racing Queensland and Starlight Children’s Foundation (in 2015 he swam the English Channel and raised more than $1 million for the charity). You can do those things for free and your reasons for being there are pure; they know you’re there to do your best.

“With Blue Sky, it was really hard work and the pain was substantial. I think about so many people who work hard and don’t get to the point of financial freedom.

“The pain in the gut is gone,” he says of his new life.

“There’s a real pain in the gut that comes from worrying about all the things that go right and wrong. Part of building a business is being relentlessly pedantic.”

Sowerby is keen to share what he knows with the Sunshine Coast business community and has some ideas about how the Sunshine Coast can get ahead economically.

“I put in more than a million dollars, sold everything and put it into the business”

A country kid brimming with ambition, he rose from a rural background – the son of a cotton farmer in Warren, New South Wales – to reach the heights of business success.

“I went to Moree Ag High School, came out of uni and was totally insulated,” he says. “I had no idea what the world held and then I spent the next 15 years trying to understand what worked. I’m not particularly bright, but I worked really hard.”

Sowerby has an infectious enthusiasm for business and is open about the sacrifices he made to get to where he is today.

“It’s quite surreal,” he says. “Through the whole Blue Sky process and before – we never really had any money. I saved up a lot of money through the first 12 or 13 years of my working life so I could do Blue Sky. I put in more than a million dollars, sold everything and put it into the business. The goal I had was financial freedom. The interesting thing about this is the freedom to choose to spend your time to do things like the

“You can change your life if you start your own business. I’ll go through the Blue Sky story and what it was like for me, give lots of case studies and challenges you may experience…it’s raw, there’s no fluffy stuff.

“The problem for the Sunshine Coast, as it is for the rest of Queensland, is infrastructure. The amount of time we’re all wasting sitting on slow trains or slow highways is an embarrassment to both sides of politics and there’s just no excuse for it. We really need to do something as a game changer.

I can’t understand as a progressive nation why we can’t do things that are a bit more visionary.

“Having said that, it might mean the Sunshine Coast builds its own culture regardless. It might say well, no one is going to help us, we may as well do it ourselves. My personal view, however, is that it’s the role of government. They have to stop finding excuses for failure and get it done.”

You can start by paying close attention to advertisements in local media or bridal magazines and even talking to friends of family members who have had weddings in the past 12 months (they will probably love the opportunity to recap their big day) to see if there are any immediate stand-outs for you.

Heading straight to the internet can be great for inspiration when it comes to themes, colour schemes and what is on trend and you may start to see some local suppliersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; names keep popping up with styles that you envisage for your big day.

Whether you create your own wedding website, have a wedding book or a simple notepad, start recording the details of suppliers you like the look of or who have been recommended.

You may find the same suppliers keep appearing on your radar, so it makes sense they will be one of the first that you connect with.

STEP 3: SEEK OUT AN EXPO Expos can be busy and bustling, but they negate the need for endless Instagram scrolling, because you can speak with and

view the work of dozens of suppliers all in one place.

There are several wedding expos across the Coast each year, so do a quick search to see if one is happening near when you hope to start your planning â&#x20AC;&#x201C; you may just be able to knock over steps one and two at once if you attend an expo.

You will quickly be able to tell if the supplier is the right fit for you by gauging how connected they are with you vision and how easily you can talk to one another.

At this early stage, monogamy is not essential, so feel free to meet with as many suppliers as you need to until you find â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;the oneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;.

STEP 4: CONNECT WITH YOUR FAVOURITES

STEP 6: TIME TO THINK DOLLARS Now that you have some frontrunners, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s time to consult the wedding budget you and your fiancĂŠ would have discussed before this planning adventure began.

If you absolutely love a certain supplier, but their fee is just outside your grasp, look at other areas you can chip away at in order to secure them for your wedding.

Also, bear in mind the majority of suppliers will require a deposit to secure your booking.

Most suppliers will have an enquiry form you can fill out online to see if they are available for your wedding date and this is also an opportunity for you to start working out how much they will charge.

If they donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t, send an email with as much detail as you can possibly give at this early stage of planning to save you from several to-and-fro emails to get the answers you seek. Or, go old school and pick up the phone to speak with them directly.

STEP 7: LOCK THEM IN STEP 5: LET THE SPEED DATING BEGIN

Once you are satisfied you have found a supplier who is as passionate about your ideas as you are, they are available on your planned wedding day and within your budget, be sure to lock them in by paying your deposit. This is when you can begin to turn your ideas into a reality.

There may already be a clear winner for you in one or two categories, but if there are still several options on the table, the best way to whittle them down is to meet with them in person.

rouble in paradise this week with my wife Michelle telling me she wants our marriage to be like a fairytale. Just had to apologise for locking her in her Nan’s room with a wolf.

Easy mistake right?

Then she accused me of ruining her birthday. Not correct at all. How could I? I didn’t even know it was her birthday. Then to make up for it, she wanted me to make sweet love on the bonnet of her Honda Civic. You know what, if I’m going to do that, it’s going to be on my own Accord.

I was heading off for a weekend away with some mates and Michelle says, “Have a great time, don’t forget to text” and I’m like “Really Michelle, it’s highly unlikely I’ll forget such a basic skill”. I know right? I’m not a compete idiot.

Gotta say though, my wife did stop a fire in the kitchen at her work and saved an entire media corporation and dozens of people’s lives. I caught two Skittles in my mouth on Tuesday, so it’s been a big week for both of us.

In other news, I spent 30 minutes the other day watching my dog Pepper Potts chasing her tail. I thought about how easily dogs are amused. I’ve always found it amazing that if you blow on a dog’s ear while they’re on the couch with you, they hate it.

But when you’re driving down Sunshine Motorway at 100 kilometres an hour, they’ll gladly whirl their head out of the window.

I’ve done some research into this and apparently it’s because the amount of smells the dog picks up while cruising the streets is like a rush of drugs to the dog’s head. They are literally tripping. True story. Which is probably why you always see actor Vince Colosimo hanging out the sunroof of the limo when it’s arriving at the Logies.

There’s a tops new brew coming out of Sydney’s Northern Beaches, that’s already picked up a bunch of fancy awards and as such, has claimed the title Champion Pale Ale. I know what you’re thinking, there’s more Pale Ales on the market than Joe Hockey’s had cronuts. You’re right, but there’s a bunch of them that are just ace and the Modus Operandi CPA is another one for sure.

This rich, golden coloured Pale is dry hopped with the Yakima Valley’s best heavy hitting hop, Simcoe. Brought in from the US, the Simcoe creates big aromatics of pine and citrus and touts a solid crisp finish, making it one of the most unique PA’s on the market.

Beer first, no shortcuts, is MO’s ‘Modus Operandi’ and they’ve absolutely nailed it with this Champion Pale Ale. Not for the faint hearted though, at 5.2 per cent and only available in fancy looking 500 ml cans, the MO PA is a real treat.

READER’S CORNER Fava Beans for Breakfast Author: Suzanne Salem Publisher: Harlequin Mira RRP: $29.99 Reviewer: Gill Read Suzanne Salem’s Fava Beans for Breakfast, is set in the ‘70s on the New South Wales coast, when people could arrive in Australia, easily find work and follow their dreams.

The main character, Nayeema, and her husband are on such a journey, but not without some bumps in the road.

The novel touches on some of the difficult choices and major themes in life – relationships and priorities, the price of ambition, prejudice and racism, but also love and the importance of place.

For the most part, Salem’s writing flows easily.

Occasionally, I felt the plentiful imagery tried too hard and sometimes broke the flow (a large, plump ant is compared to a knob of celeriac).

However, comparisons are interesting and there are mysterious and exotic elements.

While some behaviour of minor characters is perhaps puzzling, Salem has created a sympathetic heroine and an easy read for the beach.

BRINGING THE SPORTS BACK Audi has blended the rough with the smooth to create its latest SUV, the civilised A4 Allroad. By Peter Atkinson, AAP.

T

he great irony about the world’s love affair with Sports Utility Vehicles is that despite their name, the vast majority of them aren’t really very sporty at all.

Yes, they’ve won our hearts with their high-riding stance, their space, practicality and even their growing levels of comfort and refinement.

But apart from a few high-profile, high-performance models from big SUV

makers, they’re generally less than inspiring to drive.

This one is different.

Audi’s A4 Allroad puts the Sports back into the SUV – probably because it’s not really a typical SUV at all.

In fact despite its all-wheel-drive grip and some rugged-looking trim around the bumpers and wheel arches, it’s more an Audi wagon than purpose-built soft-roader.

The A4 sits squarely near the “soft” end

of this spectrum. Based on the all-wheeldrive version of Audi’s A4 Avant (wagon), it sits slightly higher (34mm) than the conventional load-lugger and has some tough-looking trim to emphasize the point.

But in every other respect it behaves more like a sporty wagon than something built for the soft stuff.

Now in its second generation, the A4 Allroad offers a turbocharged petrol engine for the first time Down Under and it’s made a world of difference to this very elegant, refined little wagon.

Previously it made do with a diesel-only engine choice – still available on this latest model but unquestionably shadowed by the vigorous nature of the petrol powerplant.

The two-litre turbo four delivers a punchy 185 kilowatts and 370Nm which, when combined with a slick-shifting seven-speed dual-clutch auto, and Audi’s famous Quattro all-wheel-drive-grip, gives the A4 a decidedly sporty edge.

The diesel is once again available in this model, with a more modest 140kW and hefty 400Nm of torque – plus a tempting fuel consumption rate of just 5.2L/100km.

Both engines are coupled to an impressive seven-speed S-Tronic dual clutch transmission.

This all-new A4 Allroad couples its Quattro all-wheel-drive system with a new, model-specific Drive Select system that

allows the driver to choose a variety of performance and traction modes.

Standard fare includes 18-inch alloys, MMI Navigation with smartphone interface and Bluetooth streaming, leather sports seats, three-zone climate control, pushbutton start, electric folding mirrors and LED adaptive headlights.

Pre-sense autonomous braking function, blind-spot assist, cross-traffic assist and rear-view camera are part of the safety package.

AUDI A4 ALLROAD HOW BIG? Based on the latest-generation A4 wagon, it’s officially a compact SUV but feels bigger and more spacious than that. Four adults will comfortably enjoy its plush cabin.

HOW FAST? Pleasingly quicker than most options in this pseudo off-road category, with a 0-100km/h sprint time of just over six seconds. That used to be sports car territory not all that long ago.

HOW THIRSTY? The two-litre turbocharged petrol engine (6.7L/100km) is quite frugal, although the less potent turbo-diesel eclipses it for fuel efficiency at 5.2L/100km.

HOW MUCH? $74,900 plus on-road costs; as tested $79,223. The diesel is cheaper at $71,400.

FEAR NOT: AUCTIONS ARE A GOOD WAY TO GO Auctions can be a fun and exciting experience for both buyers and sellers, if the fear of the unknown is removed.

ear can play a huge role in the auction process, with fear of missing out driving up prices as emotional bidders push their budget boundaries to secure the house of their dreams. But fear can also prevent sellers from venturing into the auction realm to begin with.

Next Property Group founder Loren Wimhurst says the more you learn about the auction process, the more you realise it is a great vehicle to maximise the sale price of your property.

“From a seller’s point of view, it simply puts your property to the market with a closing date and is essentially saying, ‘this is what we’ve got and now you can tell us what you would pay for it’,” she says.

“Some people have a fear of control being with the market rather than in the hands of the seller, but you’ve got an opportunity to get good, honest feedback for what the market is prepared to pay for your property and you could be pleasantly surprised.

“As a buyer, you know the seller wants to make a decision on the day as well, so they know they have a genuine seller.”

The Auction Group reports a recent clearance rate of 63 per cent, with one week of 20 auctions seeing one withdrawn and 12 of the remaining properties sold either prior, under the hammer or immediately after the auction.

Wimhurst says it is important for first-time auction goers to realise that while some properties do not sell under the hammer, they will often sell just a few weeks later.

“Auctions work well to get interested buyers to the property and when a property is passed in, the agent can continue to work with these people to get a deal done,” she says.

“Nobody monitors the clearance rates post-auction, but I believe up to 90 per cent would be under Loren Wimhurst contract in the three weeks after auction and there is always that 10 per cent where the seller is a little unrealistic about their price, or they see how much interest there is in their property from others and decide to keep it.”

Wimhurst credits the increasing number of people moving to the Coast from southern states, where auctions are the norm, and the transparent nature of the auction process for its increase in popularity in the region.

“It really is a fun and exciting process,” she says.

Absentee bid A procedure that allows a bidder to participate in an auction without being physically present. Generally, a bidder submits an offer on an item prior to the auction.

Absolute auction Where the property is sold to the highest bidder without limiting conditions or amount.

As is Properties are auctioned ‘as is’, meaning they are sold with all existing faults and imperfections. This is why buyers are encouraged to carry out building and pest inspections prior to bidding.

Auction with reserve An auction in which the seller or the agent reserves the right to accept or decline any and all bids. A minimum acceptable price may or may not be disclosed and the seller reserves the right to accept or decline any bid within a specified time.

Conditions of sale The legal terms that govern the conduct of an auction, including acceptable methods of payment, terms, buyer’s premiums, possession, reserves and any other limiting factors of an auction. Usually included in published advertisements or announced by the auctioneer prior to the start of the auction.

Passed in If the auction bids don’t meet the seller’s reserve, the property is likely to be passed in, which means the highest bidder then gets first right to negotiate with the seller in an effort to achieve a sale.

Refer the bid When an auctioneer says they will refer the bid to the vendor, this often means bidding has slowed and the reserve is a long way off.

The auctioneer will explain this to the vendor and will discuss whether to lower the reserve.

“The house is on the market” When an auctioneer says this, the reserve has been met and the house will sell to the highest bidder.

Vendor bid This can be placed by the auctioneer and is an indication that the seller/vendor is unhappy with the price reached at that point.

“Some people are worried about spending the money on marketing for an auction, but if you’re going to sell your property, this is an investment in the outcome of the sale of your largest asset.

“We are essentially casting out the widest fishing net possible to get noticed by every potential buyer out there as the more people interested in their property, the better the price you will get.”

All buyers need to do to allay their fears is to speak openly with the agent representing their property and to seek guidance if they are unsure about the process.

Generally, buyers will need to arrange their own building and pest inspections to be satisfied with the quality of the property and will also need to have pre-approved finance to ensure they bid within their means as the sale immediately goes unconditional.

“There is great energy around auctions and sellers need not be disappointed if bids on the day are low as many properties that are passed in go on to sell at market value shortly after,” Wimhurst says.

“People are entitled to go in bidding for a bargain. With every auction, there is a swing of 20 per cent between bargain bidders and fair price bidders, but the former are usually bidding based on their budget as opposed to the value of the property, which are two different things.”

SURF REPORT

The waves were back to our summer norm last weekend with northerly winds knocking down the small bit of south swell that appeared mid-week. This week has seen stronger southerlies and this should result in a tad more swell over the weekend.

Saturday winds will be SE all day but go early for slightly calmer conditions with the swell predicted to peak around the metre mark. We will have a new moon tide early with the points and protected areas better later on the lower tide.

Sunday will see the swell back off a bit but the SE winds pick up, so let’s hope there’s more south than east in those winds where the points and protected corners will once again be the pick.

At least, the southerlies blow the stingers away.

ESTUARY: Mud crabs are out of their holes and moving into the deeper water at the mouths of Eudlo and Petrie Creeks. Bream and flathead off the Cotton Tree sand bag walls. Jew, estuary cod and mangrove jack taking live bait in the mouth of Eudlo Creek.

SURF: Sand whiting along Maroochy Beach on the rising tide using pippies. Quality tailor and bream taking baby blue pilchards on small ganged hooks at Pincushion. Flathead and dart along North Shore.

OFFSHORE: Moses perch, Maori cod and sweetlip taking squid at the Blinker, along with mackerel and quality cobia proving great sport. The Barwon Banks and wide Caloundra returning cobia, snapper, pearl perch and some big sharks.

FRESHWATER: Lake Macdonald for bass and Mary River cod on lures trolled along the weed drop off with 10 to 15 feet favoured. A change of colour can be all it takes. Plenty of shrimps in the Obi Obi Creek with bass and jew feeding in the cooler part of the day, also plastics jigged off the bottom working well.

Further afield, Lake Awoonga, near Gladstone, is firing for barra on a variety of lures and live baits worked over the weed.

here do you get your ideas from? This is a regular question I get asked about this column.

As I am sure few will be surprised, they come from just about anywhere, with many of them starting as questions I want answered – so here are some of my random thoughts from the past few weeks.

Why when you iron a shirt is the stain always on the last panel, which means you have wasted all that effort before having to throw it in the wash to soak?

Also, why is it that wherever I leave my shirt – in the few minutes between finishing and putting it on – is always the best place for my boys to jump, wrestle or sit?

These two things may explain why I don’t want to be filthy rich, just rich enough to get someone to iron my shirts.

Why do some people think it’s OK to

steal shopping trolleys? I’ve seen people walking down main roads with them fully packed with groceries.

Why when people drop things into the garden of our ground floor apartment is there nothing that we want? So far people have donated a stubby cooler, an election

found my eight-year-old had waited up for me. He looked me up and down before offering some words of reassurance.

“Dad, sometimes change is good and sometimes change is bad. Sometimes you get home early, and sometimes you get home late.” With that, he went to bed, satisfied that all was OK with the world.

And why do kids ask such brilliant questions? Questions I would never think of, let alone be able to answer. Like this from my youngest: “How loud was the Big Bang?”.

To save you a Google search – there was no sound at all because sound waves need a medium like air, water or solid matter to travel through – but matter was not created until long after the Big Bang.

So that’s how I get my ideas. A little wonder, a touch of intrigue and a sprinkle of the absurd.
