Already this patrol season, 50,000 preventative actions have been taken by local life savers. Furthermore, not a single life has been lost between the flags on the Coast in the movement’s 100-year history.

In this week’s cover story we pay tribute to our heroes in red and yellow.

Also in this edition, we report further on Mayor Mark Jamieson’s campaign – #OperationMedSchool. This is a vital community campaign to ensure the Sunshine Coast University Hospital is granted the medical school it was promised, sooner rather than later.

The day my high school careers advisor told me to rethink engineering at university because he thought it might be a bit too hard. I reckon that was the point that cemented my determination that I was going to be an engineer. (And he was right – it was really hard – but I did it anyway.)

In my current role I lead the delivery of a $3 billion capital works and maintenance program on the state transport network as well as the operation on the state road network.

ome of Jett Kenny’s earliest memories are of splashing among the waves on Mooloolaba beach and watching on with awe and anticipation as his two older sisters Jaimi and Morgan enjoyed nippers each weekend.

As the youngest child of ironman legend Grant Kenny and Olympic swimmer Lisa Curry, it was no surprise when Jett decided to step into the world of surf lifesaving.

Jett has many fond memories of patrolling the Coast’s beaches, something he has done since achieving a bronze medallion at the age of 15.

“You become good mates with all the people you work with and there is a big social side to it, especially over the summer when so many people are around. The lifesaver and lifeguard numbers double and the beachgoers triple,” he says.

“I’ve only made one rescue – prevention is the key.”

More than 50,000 preventative actions have been taken by Sunshine Coast lifesavers this season and more than 780,000 people attended beaches patrolled by both lifesavers and lifeguards from Christmas eve to New Year’s Eve. And nearly 12 million people visited the 11 patrolled beaches between Noosa and Caloundra in the 2015-16 season – and that was just on weekends and public holidays from September to May. Jett was among the 3000 active patrol members watching over them. The livesavers consistent vigilance means the region has an enviable record of no lives lost between the flags.

Jett started in nippers at Mooloolaba Surf Life Saving Club before moving to the Noosa club in under-15s to follow coach Darren Mercer. Four years ago, he moved back to Alexandra Headland to train under Jeff Lamarseny.

The competition bug didn’t bite as much as nibbled at a young Jett, who admits he took on “whatever came up” as he rose through the age group ranks.

“The earliest memory I have of racing was the Rainbow Beach and Redcliffe carnivals and I remember the surf was always big… but I don’t know if that was because I was little,” he quips.

“When I reached under-11s and could enter bigger competitions, hopping on a board became my favourite event.”

He has racked up several junior national medals in his time, but the 20-year-old says he “doesn’t count” those medals, because he believes the pinnacle of competition is when you hit the open category.

He came second in the open double ski in his first year at that level and in 2015, he

came fifth in the nationals in the ski race.

For the past two years, he has finished third in nationals in the ski relay and when he partnered with James Porter in the double ski, they proved a force to be reckoned with.

The pair were unbeaten in the Summer of Surf series in the 2015-16 season before taking second place at nationals.

“I’m always striving for the win, and never really happy with the minor places, but I take it as it comes,” he says.

“Because of what my parents did and how my grandfather (surf legend Hayden Kenny) was in the sport, I have a natural passion for it, but I haven’t really focused on it fully for a whole season. One year I might give it a good crack.”

He has only competed a couple of times against his father, who as a 16-year-old in 1980 famously won both the Australian Junior and Open Iron Man Championship on the same day. And Jett hasn’t always come out on top against his now 53-yearold father.

“At the state titles last season, we both got to the semi-finals of the double ski and (my partner and I) both got hammered and Dad ended up beating me. I have to take that one on the chin; he never lets me live it down,” he says.

With 291 active patrolling members, Alex is one of the larger clubs on the Coast, but it is still small fry up against many of the clubs from the Gold Coast and Sydney. Jett says the club is once again starting to hold its own against the southern powerhouses in the competition realm.

He has put in the hard yards training throughout the holidays in the lead-up to the nationals at the end of March, while also working his fourth summer as a paid lifeguard.

Late last year, Jett also signed on with Vivien’s Models and hit his first catwalk for swimwear brand Budgee Smugglers.

TIM DWYER Caloundra Metropolitan You might have seen Tim Dwyer getting around the Coast in a suit as the Sunshine Coast Council deputy mayor, but when his roster rolls around, he does not hesitate to swap the shirt and tie for his boardies and a red and yellow cap.

COVER STORY Caloundra Metropolitan Surf Life Saving Club since he joined nippers as a five-yearold in 1968.

The influence of his father Des, who was heavily involved in the club since he joined in 1947, combined with Dwyer’s own love of the beach means he took to surf club life like the proverbial duck to water.

Aside from when he moved to Sydney to pursue a rugby league career and joined the Queenscliff club for one season, Dwyer has been a loyal active Caloundra Mets member.

“It’s a lifestyle, so being a part of a great club culture has been rewarding, as is learning to be proficient in the ocean,” he tells My Weekly Preview.

“However, the two things I have enjoyed the most are surf sports and being on the beach doing beach patrols.

“While some things change and some stay the same, the biggest change has been centred around the response to the world of liability and risk mitigation. It’s much more serious today.”

Dwyer says he has enjoyed countless experiences through the club, where he has taken on the roles of assistant branch delegate, assistant clubhouse director, gear steward, active member delegate, deputy president and vice-patron at one time or another.

Despite representing Queensland three times and being state captain in 1976, Dwyer says competing in surfboats between 1994 and 2000 is a stand-out.

“From the early morning training sessions to carnival days, the big surf days and the luck – or lack of it – that goes with that, the laughs, the arguments, and the success of that period, it’s all wrapped into a memorable period of my time at Mets, especially as my brother Dan was in the boat with me throughout those years,” he says.

The late Des held many roles at Mets, including president, life member and he was the club’s second life governor. Now Tim’s son James has become the third generation Dwyer at the club, entering his third year in nippers.

Dwyer says he draws great satisfaction

from seeing the club culture thrive as well as traditions respected and continued by each generation.

“The movement has a bright future, particularly if it ensures that the enjoyment, camaraderie and dedication of its volunteers isn’t swamped by red tape, administrative excesses and top-heavy bureaucrats building empires,’’ he adds.

“It’s got to be fun.”

“There were plenty of times we thought we just weren’t going to be able to do it. We really made it by the seat of our pants.”

There was a constant effort from the club members to raise money during this time and they would pitch in using ingenious ways.

“We used to hold raffles at the pub each weekend; sometimes we’d get 20 or 30 chickens from a nearby farm and bring them back and cook them on the rotisserie at the club house, then someone would run them up to the pub and raffle them off straight away,” Western says.

JOE WESTERN Mooloolaba Mooloolaba Surf Life Saving Club life governor Joe Western has been involved with the club through both its most successful years and its toughest.

Western was one of the core members involved in the re-building of the club house after it was destroyed by fire in 1978.

Western joined the club as a 16-year-old in 1960 and he, along with most of the members, travelled up from Brisbane for weekends and school holidays, mostly by hitch-hiking or getting a lift with the older members.

Recognising that he would never be quick enough to be a competitive swimmer, Western turned his focus to surf boating, which became his life-long passion.

He won his first State Junior title at 16, then later switched to sweep and piloted crews which have won seven Queensland titles, a National Masters title and many branch titles.

“I don’t think there’d be a member who’s gone through the club who hadn’t rowed with me at some stage,” Western says.

However, competition has never been the sole focus for Western. His dedication lay with the club’s lifesaving efforts, which were put under pressure when fire tore through the clubhouse in the late ‘70s.

The clubhouse was insured for $25,000, but the new one was going to cost $250,000.

CAITLIN KNIGHT Dicky Beach Becoming a surf lifesaver has taught Caitlin Knight how to save lives and it is a skill she has drawn on many times. The 27-year-old registered nurse has been involved with the Dicky Beach Surf Life Saving Club since she was nine years old.

Introduced to nippers by her parents, it didn’t take long for Knight to “fall in love” with the movement and she says she cannot imagine life without it.

Knight does not shy away from the tougher aspects of being a volunteer lifesaver, having performed rescues with a tube, on a board, jet ski and the IRB in her decade of being patrol captain.

She is also a talented competitor, taking on everything from surf sports and surf rescue to IRB racing and more recently surf boats, where she has made a mark on the international stage by placing second in the women’s open mass rescue, women’s open team rescue and women’s open surf race at the world titles in Glenelg, South Australia in 2014.

It was a big season for Knight, who was also the club’s Summer Surf Girl representative for the 2013-14 season,

managing to fundraise more than $128,000 for the club.

Her hard work and determination saw her secure the overall title as well as win the highest fundraiser of the year.

“Being part of the club for so long, they are my family, so this was a way to say thank you and to give back,” Knight says.

“I really didn’t think I was surf girl material, but I got tapped on the shoulder and when I got started, it was an amazing experience to be part of. I met so many people in the movement, from nippers right up to president of Surf Life Saving Australia and had some amazing moments along the way, like teaching 15 to 17-year-old kids on their first ever trip to the beach some basics about surf safety.”

Knight says red and yellow is now part of her DNA and she will remain part of the 202 active lifesavers at her club for as long as she can.

“The ocean is pretty powerful and unpredictable at times, so it is pretty special to know that people can go home to their families safe after swimming at the beach because we are there to help them,” she says.

“The skills that you learn as a surf lifesaver you can use in both your personal and professional lives and knowing how to save a life is pretty special.”

THE 2016-17 SEASON SO FAR • Lifesavers have counted 73,460 people at Mooloolaba Beach, 52,400 at Alexandra Headland and 8800 at Maroochydore Beach • 90 rescues have been performed across all Sunshine Coast beaches • Of those, 40 were swimmers caught in rips • 74 rescues were performed outside the red and yellow flags • First aid has been administered to 5706 patients • Lifesavers have conducted at least 50,000 preventative actions.

Natalya Alexiou, 14, is packing her ballet shoes and leotard in preparation for Queensland Ballet Summer School from January 16 to 21. Alexiou, who has studied dance since age three and is accomplished in many styles, says classical ballet is her favourite.

“Classical ballet is such a beautiful art form, it allows me to express myself without words,” she says.

Motorists are being urged to drive carefully near road works as more than 80 kilometres across 193 roads will be improved as part of council’s $23 million Road Reseal and Rehabilitation Program this financial year. Councillor Greg Rogerson says: “The work is important to deliver smoother and safer roads. While most people are considerate, too often we see motorists who are impatient to get through road works putting their lives and the lives of our road workers at risk. COUNCIL ENCOURAGES COMMUNITY The Sunshine Coast Council has introduced increased flexibility to its monthly Ordinary Meeting agenda to make it more convenient for community members to watch debates on key issues in the council chamber. The crew at the Sunshine Coast based RACQ LifeFlight Rescue hangar have benefited from the efforts of the members of the Rotary Club of Caloundra Pacific and the generosity of local businesses who participated in the Ian Baker-Finch Charity Golf Day at Caloundra Golf Club. The event raised $9000 to provide 13 purpose-built lockers for the local crew. In 2015-16, LifeFlight flew a record 1864 missions from all of its Queensland rescue bases, a 32 per cent increase on the previous year.

The Sunshine Coast RACQ LifeFlight Rescue helicopter was one of the busiest in the state with 511 missions flown.

NEW INTELLIGENT COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS With the Sunshine Coast named as one of the world’s Smart21 Communities for 2017 – the third time in four years – the council has joined 19 peer organisations to take regional collaboration to new levels. Mayor Mark Jamieson says the Sunshine Coast has already achieved remarkable success and is in an excellent position to tap into new innovation partnerships.

SWIM COACH LOVES WORKING IN THE FAST LANE After medal success in Rio, Chris Mooney now has his sights firmly set on the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw.

hris Mooney is a man who loves his job. It involves early starts and being on call most of the time, but the head swim coach at the University of the Sunshine Coast is living a dream that just keeps getting better.

In August he took three members of the USC Spartans swim team to the Rio Olympics and while they fell short of individual medal wins, each came back with a relay medal – Leah Neale and Taylor McKeown with silver and Jake Packard with a bronze.

Getting his first taste of the Olympics as a head coach has ignited an even bigger flame in Mooney’s heart for his favourite sport and he now has his sights set firmly on the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

Word has spread about the highperformance swim program Mooney is running at USC alongside veteran swim coach Jan Cameron. Mooney is now coaching 12 elite swimmers, including Packard, McKeown and Neale and with his contract renewed for another four years, he’s fired up and ready to take things to the next level.

“We’re 13 weeks into the preparation for Tokyo,” he says.

“The kids had a really good break post Rio – they did a lot of work over a four-year period and I wanted to give them a mental and physical break.

“We’ve had some athletes join from Sydney and Melbourne and we’ve also promoted a lot of junior athletes to the high performance program.”

Mooney says the Rio Olympics were a real eye-opener and an experience he’s keen to repeat.

“We’d had quite a bit of international experience with the Commonwealth Games and World Championship events, but all the experienced coaches and athletes would say nothing can ever really prepare you for the Olympic Games except the Olympic Games. It’s really different from anything you’ve tried to prepare for. It’s the ... pinnacle of the sport,” he says.

“It wasn’t something we walked into blindly. We’d all educated ourselves; we’d all prepared the best we could. It’s got the best athletes from the planet, from every country in the world, ready to go for a benchmark result.

“My biggest thing is you’ve just got to be ready for when that pressure and expectation collide and that happens at the Olympics. I was really proud of my swimmers. I’ve got a bit of a term – my athletes are gold medal people. Every time they turn up to training and give 100 per cent with that accountability that’s required to make all those improvements, they’re already winners in my eyes.”

While Mooney says he was happy with the performance

of his swimmers in Rio, he’s still not satisfied.

“I know now we belong there and I know we can go to that next level,” he says. “We’ve proven it to ourselves. We’ve weathered the storm and we know that we belong there. We want to do better and we know we can do better. We’re going to have another red hot go at this one; being part of the (Olympic) journey again is going to be awesome.”

Mooney started his swimming career in Brisbane, training under the great Laurie Lawrence. At 12 his parents moved to the Gold Coast where he trained with another renowned coach Dennis Cotterell and while he did well, his swimming career was destined to go in another direction.

“I was very fortunate to have two of the greats of all time, two completely different personalities,” says Mooney. “Laurie was a successful motivator and Dennis was also a fantastic motivator but he was like an inventor. He was such a science-driven type of coach.”

After beginning his coaching career under the tutelage of Cotterell, in 2002 he took a job as a swim coach at the University of Hawaii, moving with his wife and young family to the US, where he became head coach and designed

USC head swim coach Chris Mooney in Rio with his two charges, silver medallists Leah Neale and Taylor McKeown training programs. Part of his role involved recruiting and one of his first recruits was Sunshine Coast swimmer Melanie Schlanger, who was 17 at the time.

“I’ll never forget the meeting that took place with her dad, Paul Schlanger,” he says. “He’s just looking at me going, ‘Mate, she’s 17’. I sat there for hours and hours. I said my wife and I would look after her as if she were one of our own. I’ve sold some real estate in my time but that was one of the hardest sells I’ve ever had to do. Eventually Melanie’s parents gave me permission to take her back to Hawaii on a scholarship.”

Schlanger went on to represent Australia at the 2008 Beijing and 2012 London Olympics, winning five Olympic medals (including two gold) and is now studying medicine at Bond University.

Mooney left Hawaii in 2007 and moved to the Sunshine Coast because he thought it would be a great place to raise his two sons who are now 21 and 24. He was based at Caloundra and coached at Australian Crawl in Morayfield.

“That’s where I came across the young Taylor McKeown,” he says. “She was a little nine-year-old in the mini squads.”

Mooney is working on a new training plan for McKeown going into the 2020 Olympics, always sticking to his mantra that you can’t focus on outcome, only on the process.

“All we focus on is going to work every day and we focus on those one per cent improvements. That’s the only thing we can control. We can’t control the result.”

UP TO SPEED WITH THE NBN

Confused about the NBN? You are not alone. A Sunshine Coast tech expert explains what you do and don’t need to do to be ready when the technology is available in your street. WORDS: Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane

T

he National Broadband Network is already in some suburbs on the Sunshine Coast and under construction in others, but there is still a lot of confusion among residents and business owners about what they need to do to harness the new technology.

XL Information Technologies owner Richard Mueller says he has fielded numerous calls from people who are confused about whether they can access the service, how fast it will be and what impact it will have on their phone systems.

This confusion has been compounded by some phone companies calling business owners to tell them their phone systems need to be replaced as they are not compatible with the NBN. But Mueller says this can be misleading and people should seek a second opinion before leaping into an expensive and disruptive refit that might be unnecessary.

“Eventually all phone systems that do not support internet telephony will need to be replaced, or moved to a cloud hosted system,” he says.

“But at the moment, the only urgency will be for those using Public Switched Telephone

Network phone lines, which are analogue and typically provide one phone number to a premises and are used for ADSL and fax lines.

“These are scheduled to be decommissioned 18 months after the NBN rollout in an area.”

Mueller says businesses typically use other technologies such as an International Subscriber Digital Network, (ISDN), a digital network that uses multiple phone lines.

NBNCo, which is rolling out the NBN, has not yet released a schedule for the decommissioning of ISDN services, so businesses will have more time to transition to an IP-based phone system.

sketchy at the moment, with suburbs from Mooloolaba along the coast to Currimundi, the new hospital precinct, some parts of Bli Bli, Palmwoods and Hunchy now connected.

New developments in Caloundra including some sections of Pelican Waters, Bells Reach and Creekwood and Ivadale Lakes have access to NBN, as does the Palmview Forest estate on Frizzo Road and a couple of new estates in Beerwah.

The build has begun in Buderim, Maroochydore, Woombye, Nambour and Yaroomba up the coast to Peregian Beach, Coolum Beach and Peregian Springs.

For residents who want to access the NBN, Mueller says it will be easier to transition through their current internet provider if you are happy with their service.

But be aware there are a range of speed tiers offered on the NBN and even if you choose the highest speed tier, you may not be able to reach the maximum speed.

“If your connection is based on fibre to the node, you will still be relying on the quality of the copper wires running from your premises to the cabinet in the street (the node), and how far away you are from the cabinet,” Mueller says.

“You can ask your service provider whether this is your connection mode so they can help you determine how fast your internet will be. Those with fibre to the premises will be able to access higher speeds.”

social media campaign urging the Prime Minister to deliver 15 additional medical training places to the Sunshine Coast University Hospital has continued to gather momentum.

Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson launched the campaign – #OperationMedSchool – last week calling on the Federal Government to step up and urgently deliver a medical school for the region’s soon-to-open $1.87 billion hospital. The new facility has been granted 35 places but requires 50 to be given the full tertiary status.

Without the additional places, SCUH will be recognised only as a clinical school, which means students may complete some training on site, but will be required to finalise training in metropolitan-based hospitals, removing them from the local region.

“The way it is shaping up, our Sunshine Coast University Hospital will be the only tertiary teaching hospital in Australia without a medical school,’’ Jamieson said during the launch of the campaign.

“That’s because the Federal Government has not allocated the additional 15 medical student places needed.

Federal Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace says he was made aware of the issue regarding placements during the 2016 election campaign. He has been working alongside Member for Fairfax Ted O’Brien to “secure a positive outcome” and says it was the result of this advocacy which led to the national review of all medical school placements.

“The establishment and operation of the medical school at the SCUH has been a relatively fluid situation,’’ Wallace tells My Weekly Preview.

“Originally, the University of Queensland was to be involved, but withdrew its support a couple of years ago. That left a vacuum which has still not been filled today. There is a Queensland-based university that is considering whether to operate the medical school. They currently have 35 guaranteed places with which to commence the school but have indicated that, in order for the school to be economically viable, they need another 15 Commonwealth Government-funded places.

“To be clear, this issue has never been about the cost of funding those places, but rather ensuring that Australia has an appropriate number of trained doctors.”

Referencing a 2014 Commonwealth Health Department report, Wallace says that on the current rates of training there will be an oversupply of 7052 doctors by 2030.

“The challenge for State and Federal Governments is ensuring that qualified doctors are dispersed across the Australian community in an appropriate way. The Federal Government is of the view that if an appropriate number of Would you like exclusiv e access to opportunities that others d ’

A spokesperson for Queensland Health Minister Cameron Dick says as it stands SCUH’s medical school will not be operational until 2019, and that’s if a decision is made by the end of February.

This will act to alleviate the current disparity between access to medical care between rural and regional Australians and their city counterparts,” Wallace says. “As I understand it, the national review is supported by the Australian Medical Association.

“Irrespective of any campaign by the Sunshine Coast Council Mayor, as a community we need to let this process take its course and assess the results when they are presented in April 2017.’’

However Jamieson says the key issue is about allocating existing medical places from elsewhere where supply is higher than demand to the Sunshine Coast University Hospital. “There is certainly not a surplus of doctors in the Sunshine Coast region,’’ he says.

“In fact, Kenilworth and Rainbow Beach are both needing doctors and it was recently stated there are 1000 foreign doctors working in Queensland. So clearly there is a need within Queensland.

“Our government does not regulate the number of lawyers or carpenters becoming qualified. Nor, if we are truly advocating for best medical care for our residents should there be a cap on the number of doctors trained.

“What’s just as important is that those Sunshine Coast residents who want to train as a doctor should be able to train on the Sunshine Coast.

“They should not have to pay thousands of dollars, and leave family and friends, to be trained elsewhere.

“At the end of the day, all I want to see is an outcome and it is immaterial to me who has achieved it. This is a matter of significance to our region, which I am elected to represent, and I will continue to raise it until it is resolved.

“It is about getting the 15 additional medical student places required so we have a medical school at Sunshine Coast University Hospital.”

A spokesperson for Minister Dick says his department is aware there is a shortage of doctors in Queensland, particularly in rural and regional areas where there is need for specialists and more general practitioners.

“This is the first tertiary hospital built in Australia in 20 years and it deserves a medical school to ensure the Sunshine Coast can attract the best doctors, educators and researchers,’’ Dick says.

W

hile the momentous events of 2016 (Trump and Brexit) won’t be repeated in 2017, there are many important events on the horizon, including elections in Europe (France, the Netherlands and Germany) and also China’s National Congress in October.

We are positive on the Australian outlook, expecting GDP growth to strengthen to 2.9 per cent and unemployment to remain relatively low (5.7 per cent). The housing market is crucial to Australian growth, and while we expect some deceleration we don’t expect it at a pace that will threaten the whole economy.

The one piece of the domestic puzzle missing is inflation, which has been persistently weak in 2016, therefore increasing the likelihood of further rate cuts here (expect one per cent by end of 2017).

This is also expected to drag the AUD/USD exchange rate lower (we expect $0.68 by year end).

Globally, we expect GDP growth to rise to 2.8 per cent and inflation to hit 2.4 per cent. This is predicated on China continuing to grow at a robust rate (6.4 per cent) in 2017, which assumes that a damaging trade war with the US does not play out.

Without doubt, US economic policy has become more active, if not more volatile and unpredictable. Put another way, a Trump presidency increases the range of potential outcomes.

We begin 2017 with a growth bias, favouring equities, cyclical stocks, energy, commodities and hybrid securities, while reducing exposure to fixed-rate bonds, bond-like equities and gold. Within equities

we prefer stocks that are offering growth at a reasonable price (ANZ, Oil Search and Rio Tinto are good examples).

Fixed-rate bonds, as opposed to floating rate securities, appear to have reached the end of a multi-decade bull market, hence further upside opportunities are limited.

One of the key global investment themes of 2016 should carry on into 2017; the shift away from monetary policy into fiscal policy. This is particularly evident with Trump’s proposed policies of tax cuts and infrastructure spending.

Large fiscal stimulus is good for growth and reflation, but it does heighten the risk that the Federal Reserve increases the cash rate faster than expected to contain inflation. Higher growth and fiscal deficits are quickly being priced into bond yields.

T

here is a new girl in town. So when it comes to Frozen we can finally “let it go” with the release of Moana at the movies. The new film is set to send Elsa and Anna flying away on their ice skates.

I am a Frozen fan and that song actually never annoyed me despite hearing it about 5000 times. I know. I am a freak and I am in the minority.

But there is a new heroine in town called Moana and this Polynesian powerhouse comes complete with her own kick-butt song. If you have not heard it yet, you will soon enough. It is called How Far I’ll Go and it is going to be performed millions of times by little girls and by drunk women at karaoke competitions around our globe.

Something never sat quite right with watching my daughter watch Elsa fall head over heels in snowflakes in a few seconds for a bloke who, of course, turned out to be a love rat.

But the daughter of an island chief, Moana, is just the greatest role model for girls. She is not physically the insanely unrealistic proportions of Barbie. She has strength in her powerful legs and she can swim and sail boats and navigate by the stars. She is brave and kind and resilient

and does not once want or expect to be saved by a bloke.

In fact, when she talks about the future and seeks guidance from her grandmother, it is not about a fellow, but about destiny and power. Boom.

And these role models matter to our girls because we still live in a man’s world.

Men are paid more. Men are not told they are bitchy if they disagree with something.

There are other exceptional movies for kids out this summer. The new Star Wars spin off, Rogue One, is epic. And the lead is a brilliant female character.

The late Carrie Fisher is in it, too, for the shortest of time that brings back the happiest of memories.

Trolls and Sing are both wonderfully funny and have strong female lead roles too.

Maybe Hollywood is changing a little at long last. And Disney has just announced all its movies to be released in the next three years.

The best thing about having kids is getting to eat cheerios and fairy bread with wilful abandon and going to see Disney movies. Beauty and the Beast will be released in March this year. I know. It’s too much. Save the date to spend a magical few hours with Belle. But my pick this summer is Moana. Go and see it – you will not be able to get that song out of your head.

t should be no surprise that Australians work longer hours than almost anybody; that working all that extra time does nothing for our health; and that we lead remarkably busy lives. Travel time is a major factor and as congestion builds on the Sunshine Coast and north of Brisbane, we have to look at ways to make travel time productive.

I thought about all of this when, for a month late last year, I locked up my car and chose public transport – as well as car-pooling, walking and cycling – as an alternative means of transport.

Rather than just sit and gaze from the window of my bus or train, I used the time to complete my work, check emails, make phone calls and catch up on social media.

In short, I turned commute time into communication time.

And, as I surfed the net on my way home on the train, I discovered that many others had found the same truth – that time spent on public transport can be very productive. Millennials everywhere (those born since 1980) are quick adopters of technology, prolific users of public transport as an alternative to buying cars, and see the availability of public transport as a key factor in choosing where to live.

During my challenge I found that many of our buses are fantastic.

They’re comfortable and convenient, and if you’re lucky, can be just like your own private limousine. On one occasion, I

was the only occupant on a bus from Alexandra Headland to the train station at Landsborough. I was able to work on my laptop on the bus and train.

Certainly, it would be great if there was an express train from Landsborough to Brisbane – I’m working on that.

I found the routes and timetables convenient and simple to organise. The cost can vary significantly depending on the trip, but Translink’s recent changes to fares and zones have made public transport cheaper, and a viable alternative to travelling by car.

The purpose of the exercise for me was to show it is possible to change driver behaviour and, with some planning, reduce my congestion footprint by least 50 per cent.

Before November, I did what many Sunshine Coast residents always do and opted for the convenience of my own car. I now look for the opportunity to use public transport or car pool whenever I can.

The Salvation Army camp at Cotton Tree was a popular annual event at the turn of the 20th century and swimmers flocked to the river and beach, setting the stage for the Coast’s first lifesaving club, writes DOT WHITTINGTON.

T

he Maroochy River mouth was an important fishing area for the Kabi Kabi tribe, who called it “Murukutachi-dha” or place of black swan, although explorers James Cook and Matthew Flinders weren’t much interested in beaches on their voyages of discovery.

But in the late 1890s, weary farm workers and residents from the hinterland looked forward to an annual holiday camping beside the river mouth at “Maroochy Heads”, now known as Cotton Tree.

Many could only stay for a couple of days as that was all they could manage to carry in supplies when they arrived by boat.

The Salvation Army set up tents for provisions and the first annual Christmas camp was recorded in 1896, although it is thought it was around for a few years before then. The Salvation Army Christmas Encampment provided religious and leisure activities although alcohol, gambling and dancing were prohibited.

Nevertheless, its popularity grew and at Christmas 1905, 400 people camped at

the Cotton Tree reserve, most of them from the Blackall Range and districts around Nambour.

But as numbers increased, so did the list of casualties as swimmers took to the water at the river mouth and at the first surfing beach south of the river mouth.

A lifesaving reel, one of the earliest lifesaving devices, was installed on Maroochydore beach in late 1908, but it wasn’t until January 1, 1916, that, in a tent provided by the Salvation Army, the Maroochydore Branch of the Royal Life Saving Society (RLSS) was formed in reaction to the constant loss of life at Maroochy Heads. A new surf reel was commissioned that same day.

It was only the second surf lifesaving club in Queensland, after Greenmount on the Gold Coast in 1909.

A squad of instructors from the Royal Life Saving Society had travelled to Maroochydore in late December 1915, taking the cane train from Nambour to Bli Bli, then travelling by launch via Petrie Creek and the Maroochy River to Cotton

Tree. The Chamber of Commerce arranged their accommodation in tents, and also covered their transport costs.

Surrounded by more than 2000 campers, whose only surf protection up to this point had been 300 metres of manilla rope and a copper lifebuoy hung on a tree in 1908, the instructors set to work on two “reel squads”.

The first patrols began on January 2, when squads from Bli Bli and Maroochydore arrived. It must have been a wild day on Maroochydore’s ocean beach as five rescues were recorded.

By Easter 1918, the surf club had purchased a new line for the surf reel, new flags and a new belt. It was stored in “the life saving shed” in time for the Easter holiday period.

By the 1920s, Maroochydore was very much at the centre of surf life saving activity within the North Coast Branch of the RLSS. And it can be proud of its record, as no loss of life has occurred in its patrolled area during the past century. *Thanks to Peter Rigby, Ralph Devlin and Jon Erbacher for their research.

THIS MONTH IN HISTORY The Landsborough to Yandina section of the railway line from Brisbane to Gympie was opened to the public on the same day it was completed – January 1, 1891.

The concept had been discussed since the early1880s and various routes investigated.

The survey took six years and the plans for Caboolture to Yandina, a distance of “38 miles and 32 chains” was presented to parliament on November 11, 1887 and approved a month later. There were 900 men employed during construction.

Todd Widdicombe gets nostalgic farewelling his childhood heroes.

A

s a child of the ‘80s it’s fair to say the past five months or so has been shonkier than a 2am sausage roll from a service station hot box. First there was the passing of the great Willy Wonka closely followed by the Dad from Growing Pains, the dreamy bloke from Wham! vale George, and most recently Princess Leia. Fair dinkum, people, somebody better put Mr T and Indianna Jones in cotton wool.

I guess it’s a sign of my own age, that time in my life where the icons from my early years are all beginning to bid us adieu.

When I think about it, this culling of my childhood faves began last Christmas with the unexpected death of the galaxy’s greatest smuggler Han Solo. My friend Sami still makes jokes about his untimely demise

but let me tell you lady, 13 months on, it’s still too soon. I hadn’t experienced such shock and disappointment since I found out Hulk Hogan’s real name was Terry. With all due respect every Terry I know is a legend, including Bindi’s Mum, but I just didn’t think the Hulk had an everyday name and Terry? Really?

I guess with the passing of these legends it’s a timely reminder that the world can be so unjust, how come these awesome peeps are dying yet Rob Schneider still gets work in Hollywood? Unbelievable.

This recent bout of nostalgia has taken me back to those awesome carefree days as a kiddy growing up in ‘80s Australia.

I mean street cricket, BMX Bandits (Nicole Kidman as Judie was basically Jesus on a bike) He-Man on the telly, you could drink water from any tap anywhere in your neighbourhood and you didn’t die.

Kathleen Turner was a dead set spunk, so was Kirstie Alley for that matter and Dennis Keith Lillee and his remarkable moustache made the Australian cricket team invincible.

On the hardened street of the 1980s it was breakdancing, Big Wheels and BMX

bikes that ruled the hood, especially bikes with spokey dokey’s.

Don’t get me started on Young Talent Time when Dannii was more famous than sister Kylie and Joey Perrone ruled our Sunday Nights.

MISTER MAKER BRINGING THE SHAPES TO KAWANA MIST His distinctive lopsid lopsided, spotted waistcoat is an icon for crafty kids around the world and now Mister Maker is bringing his popular show to the Sun Sunshine Coast for the first time. Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane chats to the art master before he hits our shores…

But after a half-hour conversation with the popular character presenter, I quickly found myself in awe of the man behind Mister Maker.

His name is Phil Gallagher, and between writing, filming and touring with the popular children’s show and starring in pantomimes – the latest in the role of

Muddles for a British production of Snow White and the Seven Dwarves – he had about two weeks off in 2016.

And 2017 is shaping up to look much the same, with not even 24 hours between taking his final bow and exiting stage left from the pantomime before he visits Australia for his next run of what is set to be sell-out shows.

The best news for Sunshine Coast mini-makers is that this time around, Gallagher will be bringing his Doodle Drawers and the beloved Shapes right to our doorstep with his fun and interactive live show.

“I was lucky enough to buy my first home a couple of years ago, but still don’t really feel like I’ve moved into it because it’s kind of been like a glorified storage unit, with new carpet that hasn’t been walked on and most of the rooms taken up with spotty waistcoats and arts and craft,” he says.

Gallagher first donned the lopsided waistcoat, which has become a trademark recognised by children around the world, in 2007 after landing his dream job that has taken him places “beyond my wildest dreams.”

Mister Maker is screened in more than 100 countries and has earned him a BAFTA Children’s Award for Best Presenter.

The experienced performer has revelled in the role, particularly when he can interact with mini-makers in real time.

One of his first forays into live performances in Indonesia five years ago, saw 12,000 people turn up to see him at a short live show at a Jakarta shopping mall.

“It was unbelievable and something I will never forget. It took us an hour to get from our vehicle to the stage where we were performing and there was just me and a crew of three. Luckily the centre had some other staff that could help us manage it,” Gallagher says.

Fast-forward to 2017 and Gallagher is performing an hour-long show that is filling stadiums around the country and engages his young fans in arty adventures with a sprinkling of song and dance for good measure.

“I will pull out dance moves that you haven’t seen since the ‘90s,” he quips.

But he did not take the responsibility of writing the show lightly.

“For a lot of the kids, this is their first

experience of live theatre and I wanted to be respectful of that and I also wanted to tie in elements for the parents. I’ve made The Shapes more chatty in this show after the 2016 show saw Rectangle’s monologue on who he thought was going to win the Ashes cricket series went down a treat with the older members of the audience,” he says.

“The moment when the shapes run out is always a real magical moment. I’ve performed nearly 1000 Mister Maker live shows around the world and that is the moment that still makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. It’s this amazing moment when you see the kids’ faces light up and the cheering just blows the roof off the place.”

The Minute Make, one of the most intense portions of the TV show will be taken to heady heights during the live show, when Gallagher sings a song while making three things at the same time – all in 60 seconds.

NEW JEEP’S EXTRA DASH OF GRUNT Jeep’s Grand Cherokee has been a successful recipe for decades, but a new high-performance model adds some extra spice to the mix. Words: Peter Atkinson, AAP.

T

ake one large SUV and stir in a liberal quantity of SRT. About 6.4 litres of it, to be precise.

Give it a good mix, and allow it to percolate for a while.

What does it make? Well, that’s the

recipe for a whole lot of fun in the form of the wildest Jeep ever built – the Grand Cherokee SRT Night Edition.

Those ingredients? Well, let me explain.

The SUV part you surely know about.

And the Grand Cherokee is an SUV that

needs very little introduction.

The the SRT part? That’s Chrysler/ Jeep’s go-fast brand – Street and Racing Technology. An acronym that, to be honest, probably has no logical connection to rugged vehicles like the much-loved

Grand Cherokee.

The 6.4 litres? That’s the size of the stonking V8 engine that transforms a normally civilised, sophisticated familysized urban off-roader into one of the most wicked machines we’ve driven recently.

This SRT Night Edition is a limited release of the high-performance Jeep aimed at pumping some additional sales momentum into a model reaching its middle age.

Not that there’s anything vaguely thick around the middle about this beast.

It will crack the speed limit in less than five seconds, which slots it into elite territory – compliments of its gaudy 344 kilowatts of power and 624Nm of torque.

The SRT brand has become a familiar part of the Chrysler/Jeep family, with a similarly potent version of the Chrysler 300C developing quite a cult following Down Under. But the Night Edition adds a new twist.

Jeep calls it “stealth styling” – and it extends to a darkened appearance including black roof, lustrous satin black 20-inch wheels plus a black grille, front fascia and window surrounds. Inside there’s upgraded leather upholstery, dual-pane sunroof and premium Harmon Kardon audio.

MOTORING <from page 48 Ours came in a shadowy shade of cherry red which complemented the black trim nicely.

The SRT is generously equipped, with most, if not all, of the trinkets you’d expect in this part of the market – leather sports seats, electronically adjusted and heated; full multimedia setup, adaptive cruise and high-end climate control.

But it’s the performance package that appeals here – 0-100km/h in 4.8 seconds, top speed of 258km/h and an electronics suite that includes its own version of launch control.

There’s also a configurable digital display that can be customised, when performance modes are selected, to feature a centrally-placed tachometer and, believe it or not, lap timer.

The chassis is nicely resolved, with a firm but not uncomfortable ride, accurate and direct steering and enough balance to gather itself up quickly after any rapid changes of direction. Jeep has integrated as many aluminium components as possible to keep weight down and nimbleness intact.

The SRT’s price point is an intriguing one. At $97,000 plus onroads, it’s almost 50 per cent more expensive than the standard, top-of-the-range Grand Cherokee.

Its mechanical twin, the Chrysler 300 SRT8 that shares the same engine, transmission and much of the running gear

including oversized brakes and sports suspension, is substantially cheaper with an entry-level price of just $59,000.

But then you compare this machine with other SUVs that deliver the same kind of performance and equipment levels and the big Jeep seems like an absolute bargain.

Of the European options, perhaps only the Porsche Cayenne gets close to the Jeep’s price with its entry-level models – as does the new Jaguar F-Pace’s flagship supercharged V6.

Pound for pound (or kilowatt for kilowatt), the SRT is more comparable with high-priced German performance SUVs like the Mercedes GLE63, the full-blown Cayenne and BMW’s X5 and X6M. And in that company, the Jeep looks like

remarkably good value.

It might lack that Euro brand cache – but the extra $50 grand in your pocket might help soften the blow.

Big American V8s like this one have, in our experience, tended to be more about capacity and sheer brawn than finesse.

But we were pleasantly surprised by the driveability and nimble, responsive personality of the SRT’s thundering powerplant.

It’s quick to respond to throttle inputs and loves to rev, creating a sonorous experience as it, rather rapidly, gathers momentum. Yes, it has 50 per cent more capacity than the turbo-charged V8 engines of its German rivals – but it’s not some ham-fisted, low-tech bruiser, either. And its eight-speed auto, sophisticated all-wheeldrive system and selectable drive modes – giving choices from eco and tow modes right through to sport and track settings – enhance that output.

There’s even a valet mode – presumably for when your kids want to borrow the car.

When selected, the engine performance is dialled back with a maximum 4000 revs; transmission is similarly neutered, launch

CALOUNDRA IS QUEENSLAND RENTAL HOTSPOT The Real Estate Industry Queensland’s quarterly vacancy rate data reveals Caloundra and Noosa are the tightest rental markets in the state, something local property managers have consistently seen on the ground. Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane talks with some Caloundra industry experts to find out why this suburb is such a hot spot.

TIPS TO IMPROVE YOUR CHANCES OF SECURING A RENTAL PROPERTY

W

hile nearby rental markets in Brisbane remained at 3.3 per cent, Moreton Bay eased from 1.7 per cent to 2.2 per cent and the Sunshine Coast region was sitting at 1.6 per cent in the REIQ data report, Caloundra topped them all in the September quarter, with a 1.2 per cent vacancy rate, despite easing slightly from one per cent the previous quarter.

REIQ CEO Antonia Mercorella says the surprising result in Brisbane’s “middle ring”, which saw vacancy rates reach 4.1 per cent, was likely due to the oversupply question and rents becoming extremely competitive, luring tenants from the middle to the inner ring of the city.

“Also, a significant level of development has come online in the middle ring and some agents have reported that without being able to sell, many of those properties have been put into the rental pool,” Mercorella says.

Realway Caloundra property investment director Kerry Baikie says Caloundra remains a tight market because the area places residents within five to 15 minutes from the ocean and has a host of excellent state and private school options.

“In my opinion there is not a shortage of houses, or rental accommodation, there is a shortage of cheaper accommodation on the Sunshine Coast and in Caloundra,” she says.

“If people move to the Sunshine Coast expecting to rent a four bedroom home for $350 per week, unfortunately for them this isn’t possible. The recent developments in Meridan Plains included a large variety of home sites, both large and small and the new developments in Bells Reach, which is almost completed, and Aura in Caloundra West will see a huge injection of new properties on the rental market with fantastic infrastructure planned that will create great lifestyle solutions for many and for many years to come.”

Baikie says beachside and acreage properties are the hardest to come by as there is simply not enough supply.

“Properties are generally tenanted in less than two weeks for an average three or four bedroom home and units can take a little longer, but irrespective of which type of accommodation the property must be priced correctly. Quite often owners may want to try to achieve a slightly higher price, just to feel the market, which they have every right to do.

“However, if the price is too high they end up losing income because of the time the property is sitting vacant.

More than 50 prospective tenants were matched to properties that were newly listed through a database system in just one week in early December.

Baikie says agencies are in the midst of the “manic season”, which runs from November to February, where a “large population explosion of families” come to Caloundra ready for the new school year.

“The highest percentage of renters would be families, all coming to the Sunshine Coast for a lifestyle change, however, I am confident that we will be seeing a higher percentage of individuals, couples and professionals as we await the opening of the long-awaited Sunshine Coast University Hospital in a few short months,” she says.

“Today more so than ever, there are some wonderful people wanting to rent homes on the Sunshine Coast. These people value and appreciate the opportunity they have been given when they receive the call to congratulate them that they have been approved for a home. They treat these homes with love and respect, so I encourage

home owners to buy that investment property or lease out their homes rather than selling them.”

ReMax Caloundra senior property manager Charlie Campbell says the close proximity to Brisbane makes Caloundra an attractive option for those who commute to work in the city.

“We have a waiting list, and a fantastic client database which informs our potential tenants of upcoming properties and in some cases we are renting the homes before they are even listed on the internet for rent,” Campbell says.

“Over the past six months, the majority of new tenants are families relocating to the area and most of them are from interstate and from northern and central Queensland.”

Campbell says when competition heats up, some potential tenants offer to pay three or six months of rent up-front to secure the property they desire.

“This is more likely to happen rather than offering higher rents,” he says.

“There is so much legislation in place that it is important that owners appoint an agent that is able to ensure that their properties are compliant and able to achieve a good return on their investment.”

1. Be organised. Download the application form from the internet and complete it ready to hand in at the viewing.

2. Notify your employer that they will be contacted by the agency. If it is a large corporation, they will want written authority from the prospective tenant that the employer can divulge their personal information. Privacy laws can be a hold-up.

3. If you have a pet, provide full details and even a photograph. Pet references are always helpful.

4. The application processing time should be within 24-48 hours and this can be achieved if you are thorough, all details on the application are complete and referees are readily contactable.

5. Include a single page summary, because owners like to know who their tenants are.

Let the owner know the make-up of your family, why you are leaving your current home or area, what brings you to the Sunshine Coast.

CHARLIE’S TIPS: 1. Keep a lookout for new rental listings and be the first to apply – if you snooze you lose.

2. Ensure you have all your information ready to complete the application form along with the required supporting documentation.

3. Obtain your rental references beforehand if possible. Having strong rental references is a great start.

4. Be on time for inspections at the property you are viewing – arriving late leaves a poor first impression with your new property manager.

Oh well. If only there was some surf, I could remotely justify having a beer. The word was that Noosa had some fun waves last weekend and if you were like me, that is the last place you would go on the holidays. It seems everyone had the same idea and stayed away. Waves were had by the brave.

Now this weekend. Umm, it looks like the wind might play ball, so go looking and you might be pleasantly surprised. Maybe head to Noosa and youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll have a good chance of scoring some action.

’m probably a bit shyer than you’d assume. I’m a natural introvert despite having worked in roles that have forced me to emerge from my comfortable carapace. At work, I’m paid to be a particular person and that is what I become, but when I leave the office I change back to a more reserved self.

This is one of the reasons I love my dog so much.

Let me explain.

Most nights I take Truman for a walk. He’s a chocolate brown mongrel with a heavy shake of grey despite being just three years old.

Now if I go for a walk by myself my social interactions are nearly non-existent; I don’t start conversations with strangers on the street.

But as a man with a dog, people come up to me, and my late night strolls through the CBD become Carver-ish short stories.

I’ll give you an example: A couple stumble out of a pub and a young woman comes over to Truman and starts to pat his furry coat.

“A sheep, a sheep,” she says.

With great effort she picks him up.

“A sheep, a sheep,” she says again.

After I kindly ask her to put him down, she lowers Truman to the pavement and her longsuffering boyfriend tries to drag her away. But before they take half a dozen paces she heads back to Truman and me.

She locks eyes with me, leans in and delicately reaches out and places her hand against my cheek – and starts to stroke my beard.

“A sheep, a sheep,” she laughs and then turns to try and catch up with her quickly disappearing companion.

Then there’s the time we come across a young bloke asleep, his head resting on a table at the local McDonald’s and his wallet sitting across from him.

I try to wake him up, and after a few attempts he lifts his face.

“Where are we going?” he says.

“Mate, you need to put your wallet away.”

He looks at me and then at Truman.

“Is he real?’’ he asks as he pats my dog.

“He’s real.”

“Are you sure?”

He still looks unconvinced as he again rests his head on the table.

“Mate, you really need to put your wallet away,” I say.

With great effort he lifts his head once more and looks at me.

“Where are we going?”

“We’re not going anywhere, but your wallet will if you don’t put it away.”

Through the haze the words sink in and he reaches across and grabs his wallet and pushes it into a pocket of his pants, and then he goes back to sleep to dream about a robot dog which looked just like the real thing.
