SUNSHINE AND SAMBA Local samba dancer Sasha Mazzeu is one of an elite group of international dancers heading to the world’s most famous carnival in February. WHERE DO YOU TAKE VISITORS WHEN THEY COME TO THE COAST?

WHERE DO YOU LIVE? I live on my family’s cane farm in Bli Bli. My front yard is the Maroochy River and the backyard looks over the cane fields to Mount Coolum. It’s definitely my happy place.

IF YOU COULD CHANGE ONE THING ON THE COAST, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY WORKING ON? I have just finished choreographing and training for the World Salsa Solo, where I won first place in the Samba Female Pro division and my dance partner John and I got second in the Mixed Latin Pro Couples. I’m forever working on exciting cultural dance events for the year ahead and dance curriculums for my company Sombasha. I’m also training to keep my fitness at peak, as I will be dancing in Rio de Janeiro’s Carnaval in Brazil next year with a company called Estacio de Sa. I will be one of only eight international dancers that auditioned and received a place. Also, I am entering the very first International Samba Queen competition, representing Australia, so this requires scouting some sponsors to support me. Then there is parenting two young boys. Plus, I’m 10 hours off completing a 200-hour yoga teacher training course.

I remember every moment of being in labour so clearly and once Sian had entered the world I was like, I did it.

BIG PLANS FOR A BRIGHT FUTURE Find out what’s in store for the Coast in part one of a two-part series about our major infrastructure projects. COMPILED BY: Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane

he Sunshine Coast Council predicts the region will reach a population of 424,000 by 2031. That’s less than 15 years away, which means investing in development of property and transport and securing the sustainability of the region are key factors to ensuring we are prepared for the future. University of the Sunshine Coast regional and urban planning lecturer Dr Nicholas Stevens says the region is in a great position considering the global shocks of the past decade. “Council has a line of sight for planning and development and that builds confidence in the community and investors,” he says. “The council has done a great job of plan development and delivery, there have been some hiccups, but overall it is good planning. “They are not prioritising just the highest and best use now, but considering the long game, our future generations and lifestyle. I think the major projects in the region are a good mix of building both community and the economy – we are in good shape.” With 2017 upon us, My Weekly Preview’s Roxanne McCarty O’Kane takes a look at some of the major projects that are on the radar or underway.

LIGHT RAIL PROJECT LIFE: Estimated completion in 2025. ESTIMATED COST: The initial stage of light rail from Maroochydore to Kawana is forecast to cost around $1.3 billion. ECONOMIC BENEFIT FOR THE REGION: $3.6 billion. ABOUT THE PROJECT: Light rail is one of the Sunshine Coast Council’s major game-changing projects and is also one that has been recognised on a state level after the SEQ Regional Plan acknowledged the need for a passenger transport corridor from Maroochydore to Caloundra and on to Beerwah. The daily number of journeys around the region is projected to increase by 60 per cent by 2031 and without light rail or a similar investment in public transport, the north-south road network will need to accommodate more than double the existing traffic volume. A council spokesperson says following the council’s decision to endorse a preferred light rail alignment for further investigation between Maroochydore to Caloundra, work continues to gain a better understanding of the costing and developing a planning strategy for the coastal corridor. “Elected representatives and council

officers have continued to advocate for the project at State Government level and to consider input from the private sector for the completion of a Feasibility and Business Case by December 2017 and the delivery of a light rail system by 2025,” he says. “Council is prepared to solely undertake this work but would ideally like to partner with the State Government and/or the private sector in the preparation of the future business case.” The project will be rolled out in stages, with the first taking in the 14 kilometres from Maroochydore City Centre to the Sunshine Coast Public University Hospital at Kawana and stage two, running from the hospital south nine kilometres to Caloundra. Additional future stages to the Sunshine Coast Airport and to Beerwah are yet to be considered. The spokesperson says how the current pressures of growth are managed will determine the future attractiveness and competitiveness of the Sunshine Coast. “At present two possible scenarios exist for the Sunshine Coast – to continue the transport focus on road infrastructure alone, or to shift towards a more integrated network with public transport supplementing the road network,” he says. “At this point in time there is a unique and exciting opportunity for the Sunshine Coast to plan for a new way to move and

In addition to its capacity to move large volumes of people efficiently, light rail is recognised for its ability to improve property values and stimulate investment. The construction phase will see the direct and indirect creation of almost 9000 jobs and when it is completed, the light rail will also improve mobility, especially for the aged and people with disabilities. Dr Nicholas Stevens from the University of the Sunshine Coast says the light rail is a key to reducing our dependency on private cars and offering new residents the opportunity to do away with their cars. “The way it can activate urban spaces is spectacular and now is the time to act, before we develop ourselves into a corner,” he says.

ABOUT THE PROJECT: A Transport and Main Roads spokesperson says planning for the Mooloolah River Interchange (MRI) supersedes previous planning carried out for a key segment of the Multi-Modal Transport Corridor (MMTC). The MRI is the Kawana Arterial and Sunshine Motorway upgrade, which includes a new connection to the $1.8 billion Sunshine Coast University Hospital precinct via a two-lane road, which will form part of the future Kawana Arterial. The arterial will connect Kawana Way at Parrearra across the Mooloolah River with an upgraded Mooloolah River Interchange on the Sunshine Motorway at Mountain Creek. On the other hand, the MMTC is a proposed future transport corridor from Caloundra Road to the Sunshine Motorway, but construction plans have stalled twice. HOW WILL IT AFFECT US? Member for Buderim Steve Dickson has been heavily campaigning for the delivery of the MRI as he believes it will ultimately save lives by providing faster access to the hospital in times of emergency. myweeklypreview.com.au

ABOUT THE PROJECT: Although the Sunshine Coast Council’s main focus is on the delivery of light rail by 2025, the Caboolture to Maroochydore Corridor Study (CAMCOS) has been a work in progress for the Department of Transport and Main Roads since it was endorsed in 2001. CAMCOS defines the route for a future heavy railway line branching off from the North Coast railway line at Beerwah and extending through to Caloundra and Maroochydore. A Department of Transport and Main Roads spokesperson says funding for further planning is being considered. “The time frame for construction and commissioning of rail infrastructure in the CAMCOS corridor may be influenced by several factors including potential delivery time frames for the Beerburrum to Nambour Rail Upgrade project and future state infrastructure priorities,” the spokesperson says. “Further planning needs to be carried out to update the project to consider recent developments in the corridor and to determine costs and delivery time frames.” HOW WILL IT AFFECT US? When it becomes a reality, the CAMCOS corridor will provide fast, high capacity rail services through to Maroochydore. However, a council spokesperson says CAMCOS is long-term proposition. “Our current focus is on advocating for the State Government to upgrade the North Coast Rail Line to Nambour, and provide a light rail service connecting major centres within the council area,” he says.

ABOUT THE PROJECT: The AVID Property Group’s development will see 5000 homes built over the next 10 to 15 years to house 12,000 residents on the 378-hectare site that sits to the south of Sippy Downs and east of the Bruce Highway. Called Harmony, this is the largest of three developments within the 500-hectare Palmview area and includes 100 hectares of open space and a 15,250 gross floor area town centre. AVID Property Group general manager Bruce Harper says the development is the result of a decade of planning and work is already underway on the extension of Claymore Road into Peter Crosby Way, which is Harmony’s main entry road. In early 2017, construction will also begin on Harmony Display World, which Harper says is the largest display village north of the Brisbane River and will showcase the latest home designs from Queensland’s best builders. HOW WILL IT AFFECT US? The Coast will benefit hugely from the 9000-plus jobs that will result from it. Harmony is the first South-East Queensland development to achieve a six ‘leaf’ national EnviroDevelopment certification in master planned communities from the Urban Development Institute of Australia, meaning it will be closely watched by industry specialists and potentially used as a model for future developments.

ABOUT THE PROJECT: The development application for stage one of this 19-hectare development by Sekisui House will be submitted to the Sunshine Coast Council in early 2017. The first of seven stages includes the Westin Coolum Resort and Spa with conference facilities, serviced apartments and residential dwellings backing onto the shops and cafes within a new village heart and a significant 3.3-hectare public park. The Westin Coolum Resort will be the first five-star international and eco-tourism resort to be built on the Coast in nearly 30 years. An application to the council in 2015 to change the town plan to accommodate a 10-storey height limit was rejected and the newly designed resort proposes a maximum height of seven storeys and will accommodate 220 luxury rooms. Sekisui House development manager Evan Aldridge says Yaroomba Beach will not be a gated, exclusive community. Locals will be able to buy spa memberships, dine, shop and attend functions in the 450-seat conference facility and enjoy the park and beach access. HOW WILL IT AFFECT US? Yaroomba Beach will create 2400 construction jobs and support 1400 new local jobs, including career positions with Westin, with possible international opportunities. Sekisui House plans to gift the equivalent of four football fields of landscaped parks, lakes and bushland pathways to the council for public use. The developer will also pay for the costs of maintaining the facilities and reinstate an active beach patrol. With a connection to the Starwood Preferred Guest, Marriott and Ritz Carlton rewards programs, the Westin Coolum Resort will be on the radar of 77 million people worldwide.

ABOUT THE PROJECT: The 15 mega-watt solar farm, covering 24 hectares of a Valdora site, will be the biggest solar farm in Queensland and the fifth largest solar farm in the nation. Mayor Mark Jamieson says it will offset 100 per cent of the council’s electricity consumption across the administration buildings, swimming pools, performance venues and community centres, holiday parks, libraries and art gallery and sport and recreation facilities. “Most other governments are still talking about offsetting 50 per cent of their energy needs from renewables by 2025, so our 100 per cent offset puts us way ahead of the game and that’s a win for our environment and our community,” he says. “This project will see us proactively take control of our electricity supply, isolating council from increased price risk.” The Sunshine Coast Solar Farm will, at its peak, generate 15,000 kilowatts of electricity from the sun. Over one year, the solar farm will generate sufficient electricity to power around 5000 homes. HOW WILL IT AFFECT US? The construction phase of the solar farm is expected to generate up to 60 local jobs. “Every Sunshine Coast ratepayer will benefit from the certainty this project will provide in regard to council’s electricity expenditure and in the context of combating rising electricity costs,” Jamieson says.

MAKE A TOAST TO MIKE STORKEY A Sunshine Coast man was this year appointed president of one of the world’s largest not-for-profit organisations. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw

ost people fear public speaking more than death, so imagine being the president of an international organisation with 350,000 members and spending much of your time travelling the world giving speeches. It’s all in a day’s work for Mike Storkey, the international president of Toastmasters International. The businessman and father of five from Twin Waters has been a member of the organisation for 26 years, and in August was appointed to the role of president in a ceremony in Washington DC – one of only two Australians to be given the role. This makes him the head of some 15,500 clubs in 142 countries. “I’m the chairman of the board of directors, which covers 14 regions across the globe and many nationalities and cultures,” says Storkey. “I’m the roving ambassador and I travel four and a half months of the year. “It is fun but it is work – you usually work about 18 hours a day on the trips. I have to visit as many clubs as I can, meet as many people as I can and promote the organisation.” Storkey is clearly at the top of his game when it comes to public speaking, but it wasn’t always that way. He joined Toastmasters 26 years ago when he and his wife Leslie were living in Airlie Beach and looking for something to do at night that didn’t involve clubbing and bar-hopping. They went along to their first Toastmasters meeting and the rest is history. “On my first attempt at impromptu speaking I thought, I can do this, this isn’t hard. I can’t remember what the topic was but I said one word and clammed up. To this day, I can’t remember what the one word was,” he laughs. Storkey moved up the ranks of voluntary leadership roles over two decades, all of which were voluntary. “People say you don’t get paid – yes you do,” he says. “You get paid in what you learn and the experience you gain.” Storkey has had a varied professional career, from Woolworths store manager, life insurance salesman and hotel manager, to real estate agent, which he retired from this year. For the past nine years, he his wife have run Storkey’s Team, a communications and leadership training company for SMEs and local government. He says Toastmasters has been an invaluable aid throughout his career. “It definitely changed my life,” he says. “It made me far

more confident in dealing with people from all cultures and political persuasions, people of all statuses. It gives you the confidence to express yourself. One of the biggest things it does is it teaches you to listen. We say you have one mouth and two ears and you should use them in that proportion.” Storkey says most people could benefit from attending Toastmasters, particularly in our digital age. “We’re in danger of becoming a society of hermits,” he says. “Everybody talks through the phone, or through texts or emails. People seem to be terribly scared of face-to-face communication, yet that is the best form of communication that exists. If you’re speaking to someone face-to-face and you’re not sure what they’re saying, you can ask a question and quickly overcome misunderstanding; you can pick facial gestures, intonation of the voice. “So little communication these days is face to face. In my real estate office, people would be sitting in the next cubicle to me and they could have looked over the top to talk to me but instead they’d send an email. That’s crazy. There’s no guarantee

I’ll get it, read it or understand it.” Storkey says the reason people fear public speaking more than death comes down to confidence. “It’s a fear of appearing not to be knowledgeable, appearing not to have confidence and not believing what they have to say is of any importance to anyone else.” “I can remember going to P & C meetings where parents would not stand up to voice their opposition or support for something simply because they were afraid of public speaking.” Storkey says everyone gets nervous before speaking publicly, himself included. “Everyone gets butterflies, the trick is to get the butterflies to fly in formation – to know how to structure a speech, how to engage an audience, read an audience, establish a rapport with an audience. They’re the skills Toastmasters teaches you.” Storkey says it gives him a “warm glow” to be part of an organisation that can help facilitate better communication in our world, a skill that’s needed more than ever. “We’re one of the few not-for-profit voluntary organisations that is still growing,” he says. “Ten years ago we had 240,000 members and now we’re up to 350,000. “Toastmasters has the potential to be a great envoy for global peace. If we could communicate with each other and respect other people’s opinions, there would be a lot more understanding.”

Is it a boat? Is it a plane? Well, it’s both. ‘Willy’ is a Wilga Warbird (PS104-80) designed in the 1950s and built in Poland in 1982, the only one of its kind in Australia that floats. We cruise along the Maroochy River before pilot Shawn Kelly does a u-turn and we pick up speed and take off. My initial fear of being in the air in such a tiny plane gives way to excitement as we fly above Maroochydore and Mooloolaba with the doors off and wind in our hair. There’s a panorama of endless ocean on one side and inland waterways and mountains on the other. From the air, the built-up areas are dwarfed by the natural environment and you gain a fresh perspective on how beautiful and mostly untouched the Sunshine Coast really is. It’s a lot of fun and the closest I’ll ever get to skydiving.

I feel I’m in safe hands as Kelly expertly manoeuvres the plane, which has recently been refurbished but retains its vintage charm, with details like the original instrument panel left intact. He tells me about a mother and her surly teenagers who begrudgingly came on board because they’d been given gift vouchers they felt obliged to use. Within five minutes of being in the air, their scowls became huge grins and I can see why – it’s an adrenaline rush that can’t help but lift your spirits. As we descend over the rooftops towards the river I brace myself for impact but the landing is feather-light and smooth. I’ll be back for another go and next time, I’m bringing the kids. o our mind, the Tasmanian salmon industry offers attractive growth prospects from rising Australian per capita salmon consumption, high barriers to entry, and increasing returns from scale and best practices. Domestic prices have increased, having weathered unfavourable growing conditions last year owing to warmer waters. If prices stay high, a normalisation of per-kilogram production costs could lead to significant margin expansion in 2018 and 2019. Our base-case valuations for the local industry’s two biggest players, Tassal (TGR) and Huon Aquaculture (HUO), suggest 20 per cent and four per cent upside, respectively. The market is concentrated, with both

companies representing greater than 80 per cent of Australian production, which is around two per cent of the global market. This market structure should encourage pricing discipline and support margins. Huon is a vertically integrated salmon producer operating in Tasmania. The company owns hatcheries, marine farms, harvesting and processing facilities. Revenue is derived from the sale of product, principally fresh salmon, but the company also supplies processed products such as filleted/smoked salmon and a small amount of trout. The largest sales channel is Australia’s wholesale markets, with a lesser amount exported, mostly to Asia. Huon listed on the ASX in October 2014 and is headquartered in Dover, Tasmania. Tassal is the largest vertically integrated salmon producer operating in Tasmania. The company owns hatcheries, marine farms, harvesting and processing facilities. Revenue is derived from the sale of product, principally fresh HOG (head on, gutted) salmon, but the company also supplies processed products such as filleted/smoked salmon. The largest sales channel is retail

and the company supplies Coles and Woolworths. Tassal’s products are marketed nationally under various brands. Tassal listed on the ASX in December 2003, and is headquartered in Hobart, Tasmania. We forecast Huon’s profits to grow faster from a lower base, but we prefer Tassal, given its market position stability of returns, and the fact that outer-year valuation multiples for Huon are similar to those for Tassal, suggesting a superior risk-reward profile for Tassal. The salmon industry offers attractive structural industry trends over the medium term. Australian salmon per capita consumption at circa 2.5 kilograms per annum has more than doubled in the last 10 years, but we believe Australians are hungry for more. Supported by trends such as consumers seeking healthier lifestyles, changing dietary preferences and population growth, we see the potential for salmon consumption to rise by mid-single digit percentage rates over the medium term. There is also the possibility of significant margin expansion in 2018 and 2019. In 2017, we expect average production costs to rise given the lag following poor growing

To start 2017 on the right foot, Sami Muirhead is taking a leaf out of her grandmother’s book.

The Sunshine Coast has had a bumper year for tourism and big plans are in the works, says Simon Latchford.

new year – a new start. I love a clean slate and the promise of adventure. I kid myself every year I will get organised. I vow I will clean out my cupboards, get into my skinny jeans, wipe off my credit card debt, and see more of my friends. None of these things have ever happened. This year was the year of the self-help book for me. I was obsessed with that Japanese book about decluttering your home and only keeping things that ‘sparked joy’. I kept the stupid book because it sparked joy and still have clutter everywhere. The Danish hygge trend about making everyday life cosier was my next obsession. I read several books on it but there are still toys everywhere. So then I picked up an Oprah Winfrey book from a bargain bin, in which Oprah tells us all her life lessons. Queen O sits under her grove of oak trees every morning and the butler brings her coffee. It is here she ponders life. I think if we all had a manservant to bring us coffee as we sat under a damn canopy of trees we would all probably be a fountain of wisdom. I eat the kids’ toast scraps as I run out the door brushing my hair and shouting at anyone who will listen to get in the car. Not much time for contemplation in that ritual.

But you know what? We search around the world for wisdom and often it is under our nose. The person who has taught me the most in this life was my grandmother, who passed away when she was just shy of turning 90. Boon, the name everyone called her, lived a good life despite many setbacks from the school of hard knocks. My grandmother never complained and never spoke ill of anyone. Never. Think about that. I did not inherit that trait. The pensioner would give her grandkids her last cent if we allowed her to and she was humble and hardworking. She did not have high expectations of anyone. Boon did not need a huge house or a designer handbag to be happy. She had a modest but spotlessly clean house she took great pride in, she did not have credit card debt because she did not have a credit card, she was not remotely overweight, and she always made time for her family and important friends. Perhaps 2017 is the time to get back to the basics in values and goals. Happy New Year everyone. May the year ahead be gentle to us all and may we appreciate the simple things. I will try for my grandmother, but I fear I am already doomed to fail, as I would really love the odd morning shared with a butler, a fancy chair and a flat white.

ollowing what has been a bumper 2016, I am pleased to report solid bookings across the Coast for the summer holiday period as we move towards 2017 and the 50th anniversary of the naming of the Sunshine Coast with great optimism. The Sunshine Coast Airport topped the one million passenger mark for the year – the first time it has ever achieved this. Traditionally, the Sunshine Coast has been a ‘drive’ market destination, with the majority of visitors arriving by car. This will always provide a solid base, but a priority has been to expand direct air links as it attracts a higher-yielding market that would otherwise fly somewhere else. In the past year, we have seen Qantas reintroduce direct services, and Jetstar bring online a new Adelaide service and Virgin and Air New Zealand significantly expand frequencies. But there is a finite logistical barrier to growing air numbers much further with our current airport. The Sunshine Coast Airport has been the fastest growing airport in Australia over the past year, and with the recent confirmation of the extension and upgrade to the airport, we can look forward to growing our air capacity even further over the long-term. And if planes and cars aren’t enough, we are looking towards a bumper cruise season in 2017. Now recognised as one of the fastest growing port destinations, we know that once passengers have the opportunity to

The Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service (SCHHS) is urging people to stay safe over the holidays. Director of Nambour Emergency Department Dr Michael Natale says his emergency team see many patients whose festive season is ruined by injury, road trauma and overindulgence. HOLIDAY PARK EXPANDS Council’s popular Mudjimba Beach Holiday Park has expanded by 30% following the completion of 46 new sites now being enjoyed by holidaymakers. There are 45 new powered sites, one unpowered site and new internal roads, as well as new fencing and landscaping, drainage, and electrical and plumbing work. An existing barbecue shelter was also upgraded to a modern camp kitchen with new appliances, a kitchen sink and functional seating. The Mudjimba park now offers 35,000 site nights per year and 2016 occupancy has been up 5% compared to 2015. It holds a four out of five TripAdvisor rating. Work is also underway to add 16 sites to Dicky Beach Holiday Park, construct concrete annex pads at Coolum Holiday Park and a new caretakers’ undercover veranda has recently been completed at Maroochydore Beach Holiday Park. CHECK OUT THE NEW BULCOCK STREET There’s been some impressive changes in Caloundra’s main street as we reach the end of 2016. The new Bulcock Street streetscape, from Felicity Park to just past the Minchinton Street roundabout, is now open and being enjoyed by our local residents and thousands of visitors over the holidays. The streetscape upgrade is a $5 million investment by council to create a vibrant new look for Bulcock Street and transform the Caloundra CBD. It enhances the look and experience of the area, improves safety and access, and provides a new drawcard, which will maintain and build a sustainable economy for the town. The new streetscape’s main features are the reshaped roadway and footpaths, new contemporary street furniture and

advanced sized trees and shrubs. Many underground services, including telecommunications cabling, a new water main and a stormwater filter that protects the Pumicestone Passage from pollution, were installed before work on the aboveground elements started. A modern, dynamic canopy lighting feature which uses new technology, along with several other smart technologies such as automatic traffic bollards for market days will be installed early in 2017. We will also be adding free Wi-Fi points, waste bin sensors to detect rubbish levels, LED lighting and sensors to detect car parking availability for motorists. OUR 50TH YEAR

CHRISTMAS MEMORIES ARE MADE IN SUMMER Christmas on the Sunshine Coast is announced by heat, summer storms and beach towels flapping from balconies. DOT WHITTINGTON recalls the joys of holidays past.

t is the smell in the air that gives it away, not the decorations turning up in the shops a week earlier every year or the canned carols playing in supermarkets. It’s that scent that rises from the earth after a hot day, one that is often amplified by a solid storm to cool everything down in the late afternoon. It’s the smell of Queensland summer that turns up to announce the Christmas holiday season. After the excitement of the school breakup party, when watermelon was handed out and red iceblocks arrived packed in hot ice in big, army-green canvas bags, it was the countdown to the big day. On a sultry summer evening, the Christmas beetles, once mostly a shimmering cream but now more commonly a dull brown, began to buzz the air and their prickly little legs would grab on to skin and clothing. The cane toads turned up en masse too. In the week before Christmas, the Wimmers truck arrived carrying its precious

cargo of a crate of softdrinks – creaming soda, lime cooler, cherry cheer and that awful sarsaparilla. The factory was in Bury Street, Nambour near where the council chambers now stand. Almost opposite was the Co-Op, the supermarket where locals stopped for a chat while buying their groceries. With stores in Yandina and in Currie Street, the Co-Op also picked up shopping lists or took phone calls and delivered. It wasn’t quite the online option we know now, but dangerously close and perhaps more personal. Most prized among the stock at this time of year was the navy blue and gold wrapped and sealed tins of Arnott’s cream biscuits that turned up only at Christmas. Chickens came fresh from the farm gate at Eastons in School Road, Maroochydore and one year, Jack Vermeulen from the Windmill Bakery at the top of Nambour, baked a crispy crust for the ham. The memory of that crust still sticks like little fingers did to the licorice allsorts and jellybeans that filled bowls in December.

Live a colourful life at Aura

The coast turned into tent city as beachfront parks filled with happy holidaymakers under canvas, running around in their togs with white zinc splattered across their noses and, sometimes, a hat. Queues formed at the paddle boats and the slippery slide in the bay at Cotton Tree – a spot long since lost to the changing river mouth – while a little paddle pool topped with a black swan column was the feature of Cotton Tree park. Coloured lights straggled between posts on the old cottages that lined Bradman Avenue and although humble, were still worth a drive-by while enjoying the fresh river air after a humid day. Along the esplanades, brightly coloured beach towels flapped from balconies of the little houses and blocks of flats (all two storeys of them) and the trees in the caravan parks. There was a festive, holiday feeling in the warm Christmas air in the 1960s. Simple pleasures, but memories are made of this.

On December 27, 1958, surveyor JFH (Fred) Murray signed the survey plan which marked the boundaries of the Maroochy Airport at Mudjimba. It was not until August 12, 1961 that the airport was officially opened. He was a shire councillor on December 6, 1979, when the first airport terminal building opened.

DID YOU KNOW? Sir John Lavarack, the first Australian-born Queensland Governor, gave his name to the crescent in Buderim, although his retirement home was in Eckersley Avenue, which was named for consulting engineer A.C. Eckersley, from Nambour. The Foote brothers, Buderim’s first main developers, chose the name. Alexandra Headland was once known as Potts Point, after John Potts an employee of William Pettigrew who lived there from 1880-1890. It was renamed in honour of Queen Alexandra, when her husband King Edward VII took the throne on the death of his mother Queen Victoria in 1901. The name was formally gazetted in 1915 and contrary to common use, is singular as there is only one headland. One of my favourite stats of 2016 was a survey that asked 1000 women in the UK if they’d ever sleep with Shane Warne – 68 per cent of them said “Never again”. On that note, it’s time to take a look back at some of my favourite stuff from the past 12 months, the highs and lows, the unanswerable questions and the good, the bad and the ugly. Firstly, the greatest puns of 2016. I buy all my guns from a guy called T-Rex. He’s a small arms dealer. I’m really good friends with 25 letters of the alphabet. I don’t know Y. Velcro. What a rip-off. My Dad wants me to become an organ donor. He’s a man after my own heart. I just deleted all the German contacts from my phone, now I’m Hans free. Of course, this year has been filled with awesomeness thanks to random facts about the great Chuck Norris. Here’s the top three. If Chuck Norris was to donate an organ he could only donate his left kidney because his right one was replaced with a hand grenade in 1978. Chuck Norris once urinated in the fuel tank of a semi-truck. We now know that semi-truck as Autobot Optimus Prime. Chuck Norris likes his meat so rare he only eats unicorn. Of course, we’ve heard plenty of top jokes throughout 2016, many of them Donald

Donald Trump wants to ban the sale of pre-shredded cheese so he can Make America Grate Again. That last one’s so dumb it’s grate. Great. Of course it’s been a big year for some unanswerable questions too. Why do we call pineapple, pineapple? I mean who came up with this? It’s a fruit, does it contain apple? No. Does it contain pine? No. There’s a distinct lack of apple and pine so, I know, how ‘bout we call it pineapple? Do you think the bloke who discovered the boomerang was terrified? Can a chubby person go skinny dipping? The Mannequin Challenge took the world by storm in 2016. The Mannequin Challenge is the art of staying completely still and doing nothing for as long as possible. The current record is held by the Federal Government. Is the Wham song Last Christmas a Chrissy song or a breakup song? Better still, is it simply a tribute to the shabby art of re-gifting? And finally the greatest festive season question of all time, “Is Die Hard a Christmas film or an action movie?”. The answer of course is Christmas film, and one of the greatest of all time. When it comes to beers of the year, Your Mates and Stone and Wood are up there with a special mention to the QuickDraw Pale Ale. But here’s one that you might wanna get on your radar for the festive season – BarRat’s Brew. ife changed forever for Think Investment Realty CEO Jack Childs when his son David took his own life in 2011. In a bid to prevent anyone else from feeling like they have run out of options, Childs, a motorsport enthusiast and Sunshine Coast businessman, has thrown his support behind a special event being hosted by beyondblue. The organisation has been critical in helping to raise awareness about depression and has worked tirelessly to remove the stigma associated with the illness, particularly among men, who make up more than 75 per cent of all suicide deaths each year. Every day in Australia, seven people will die from suicide and another 30 will attempt to take their own lives.

The appeal of motorsport for men, as both spectators and participants, makes it an ideal avenue to set about eliminating the stigma associated with depression and mental illness and beyondblue will host a special event in conjunction with the opening round of the Super Sedan Summer Slam motorsport at Mothar Mountain Speedway on December 29. The Summer Slam will be the biggest motorsport event staged in Gympie this season and series organisers have confirmed a car display, meet-the-drivers session and barbecue will take place at Lighthorse Oval between 11am and 2pm, with all proceeds from the event going to beyondblue. The Super Sedan Summer Slam will be at the Lighthorse Oval, Lake Alford Park, on December 29.

feel-good machines - which celebrated the big four-oh this year. Now in its seventh generation, the GTI remains a staple – and a very lucrative one at that – of the German hatchback range. Not bad considering that, back in 1976

when VW launched the first GTI, they planned to release 5000 units of this special model. Instead, more than 2 million have been produced in the ensuing four decades. Like the donor Golf, it remains instantly recognisable as the progeny of that first

version, but one that’s got better with every successive model update or upgrade. How can something be so much better while staying basically the same? I guess that’s the power of German engineering for you. To mark the Golf formally reaching middle age (without the grey hairs and round tummy, mind you), VW has released a special 40 years edition of the GTI. The VW engineers have been let loose to give the GTI a hefty performance boost to emphasize that, while it might be entering its 40s, the Golf is in better shape than ever. That power boost lifts its output to an impressive 195 kilowatts – plus an overboost function that delivers a snarling 213 kilowatts for up to 10 seconds – when required for urgent acceleration or overtaking. The Golf GTI is, to my mind, one of the best fit-for-purpose machines in the automotive world. It knows exactly where it fits into the scheme of things and has never tried to be something it’s not. It’s not, for instance, a full-blown sports machine. That territory is amply filled in the VW lineup by the punchier, pointier Golf R. Rather, the GTI sits atop the “conventional” Golf lineup bringing all the practicality and appeal of the iconic German hatchback, but with a liberal dose of added driving engagement. Which explains why VW had to tread warily when tinkering with this anniversary

MOTORING edition. The risk was spoiling a famous recipe by adding too much of a good thing. Whereas previous GTIs have always been sparky, delightful things, that successful recipe has never included gaudy power outputs from their four-cylinder engine. Not much more than 140kW has always proven ample power to make the GTI a must-drive machine. But this latest version moves dangerously close in power to the Golf R – a car that boasts all-wheel-drive and a specialised, focused handling package that makes it virtually racetrack ready. Happily, the GTI recipe remains. That substantial extra dose of power has not compromised that long-held GTI ethic. It’s fun but not too focused, quick but still eminently practical and driveable in everyday situations. And even though it will reach the speed limit in a rapid 6.3 seconds, its thirst remains a respectable 7.1L/100km. That added performance isn’t the only enhancement VW have thrown into this commemorative model. Mechanically, that extends to an electronic locking front differential, upgraded brakes and exhausts and a bespoke aero package. It enjoys an upgraded technical package including adaptive cruise control and frontal collision avoidance with emergency

BMW’S EXCLUSIVE CHAMPION RELEASE

ar enthusiasts who want to be a part of motoring history will have to be quick. Last week, German car manufacturer BMW announced it is set to release an exclusive onroad version of the BMW M4 DTM. But with only 10 of the Champion Edition vehicles set to be released in the Australian market, the title is expected to sell fast. The car was made famous with German racing driver Marco Wittman piloting it in its 2014 debut season. Wittman was able to seal the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters (DTM) driver’s championship for BMW Team RMG. The combination took four round victories out of 10, beating some of the toughest competition in the world. Remaining with the BMW team, and his faithful BMW M4 DTM, during the past two seasons, Wittman was able to secure a second DTM driver’s championship in 2016, adding a further three race victories to his illustrious career. To commemorate this victory, BMW M has announced the release. BMW Group Australia CEO Marc Werner says the global run will be limited to 200 vehicles. “Securing five per cent of the M4 DTM

Fuel consumption is listed at 8.5L/100km on the combined cycle, with 199g/km CO2. HIGH HOPES FOR 2017 REAL ESTATE MARKET After a year of steady growth in the Sunshine Coast property market, Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane talks to real estate agents from across the region to find out what they predict for 2017.

t is a year that Sunshine Coast real estate agents have described as consistent, exciting and the strongest for buyer demand in recent memory. And with widespread demand for more property listings to meet the demand from buyers continuing, many are expecting those trends to continue well into the year ahead. Next Property Group owner Loren Wimhurst says while there is always a “huge demand” for the medium-priced market from investors and families, the market has fared well with plenty of movement within all price points and there was an increase in

demand for waterfront properties. “We saw a rise in the market from about June this year and it hasn’t really slowed up until now. There is generally a busy period around the summer months with more buyers around wanting to move to this stunning region,” she says. “I am personally looking forward to 2017, with continued growth and new development on the Coast, next year could be a very busy year for us all.” Harcourts Buderim principal Jarrad McCarthy says the unprecedented level of infrastructure projects underway within the region has boosted demand for properties. “The increased demand in property was met with a decrease in supply, with listing levels at much lower levels than previous years,” he says. “This imbalance of supply versus demand created upward pressure on prices and better results for sellers and property owners – 2016 was one of the strongest years for buyer demand in recent memory.” McCarthy says the pre-Christmas rush has been their peak period this year, with “frantic levels of activity” from buyers throughout November and December, with particular focus on vacant land and mid-range housing between $600,000 to $800,000. “We are completing more ‘off market’

sales than ever before, where we match the right buyer to an upcoming listing and achieve a sale before the property hits the market,” he says. “This has provided swift results for sellers and can often result in a premium price as the buyers wish to beat the competition. The buyers are benefiting by having the certainty of securing a suitable property.” With the factors that have driven this market activity set to continue into 2017, McCarthy says prices are likely to rise steadily throughout the year, especially if listings do not increase. “Record low interest rates and affordable property prices in comparison to Australia’s major cities will continue to provide confidence in the local property market,” he says. Day & Grimes principal Ian Black says the bottom end of the Nambour market has performed well over the past 12 months, with detached houses the most in demand. “There were no particular peaks for Nambour and surrounds, just a constant build as supply became short and we are set to see more of the same, with lack of supply underpinning price performance,” he says. Maleny Realty sales consultant Jess Luthje says well-presented property was snapped up in the hinterland and land sales

remained strong throughout the year, rising to meet the ever-present demand for properties with stunning views. “There seems to be a real satisfaction with the area and people don’t want to leave in general so we’re not seeing a lot of property come onto the market,” she says. Oceanside Property Sales marketing manager Gail Hunter says waterfront property has been in high demand this year, with local investors and owner-occupiers wishing to downsize to prime waterfront locations. This has also been buoyed by strong markets in Sydney and Melbourne, which have become “overheated”, pushing buyers over the border. “The area surrounding the new Sunshine Coast University Hospital is in high demand and will only continue to grow as the hospital opens and thousands of employees take up positions. Being shift workers, they will prefer to live close to work,” Hunter says. “I don’t believe we’ve begun to experience the wave of investment which will be generated by highly paid medical professionals and others moving to the Sunshine Coast to work in and around the hospitals. “I predict 2017 will be even busier in the real estate market than 2016.”

he development of Maroochydore’s new CBD is set to surge forward in 2017 after the completion of the first phase of work on the 53-hectare site. More than 100,000 tonnes of earth has been moved and 18 kilometres of electrical conduits have been laid in the opening stage of the transformation of the former Horton Park Golf Course into the Sunshine Coast’s new urban heart. SunCentral Maroochydore CEO John Knaggs applauded contractors Shadforth Civil Contractors and Cardno for their

professionalism in undertaking the early stage works and design. “The transformation of the site has been impressive and the outline of the first stage of the future CBD’s streets, plots, parks and waterways is now clearly visible,’’ he says. Sunshine Coast-based Shadforths has completed the physical work on site, while Cardno has acted as the project’s principal engineering consultant. Early next year, will see the start of civil engineering works on Stage 1 of the site, including road-building and the laying of underground infrastructure.

REACHING NEW HEIGHTS The Sunshine Coast is set for a tourism boost with a proposed five-star hotel to be developed in Mooloolaba.

During a lay day at the Pipeline Masters a surfer pulls into Backdoor pipe and scores an epic large barrel before coming out and hitting a massive 360 degree aerial over near-dry reef. He lands perfectly. John John Florence? Nope. Gabriel Medina? Nope. It was a 45-year-old veteran called Kelly Slater. Absolutely crazy. But, a good reason to keep in shape. Set some goals for next year and head to Indo to score some uncrowded perfection. Be friendly in the water and give the visitors a few waves. See you next year peeps.

School mackerel showing up from Bribie Island to Caloundra on a variety of baits and lures. Water temp around 23.5 degrees, bait in abundance, so mackerel are being finicky. The Barwon Banks is good for snapper, pearlies and Samson fish. FRESHWATER: Borumba Dam is returning bass on trolled divers and saratoga on floated baits. Lake McDonald is the go for golden perch, bass and spangled perch on live shrimps and small deep divers. Somerset Dam returning golden perch, bass and jew on live shrimps, earthworms and slow trolling with deep divers. Boondooma has been firing for large bass, golden and spangled perch with green prawns and jigged lures working well.

NO MEAT, NO GUILT Richard O’Leary can’t justify eating meat when he doesn’t have the heart to kill the animal himself.

he brush was soaked in a viscous red liquid the day I painted myself into a corner over eating meat – there was no turning back without leaving the permanent footprints of my capitulation. I didn’t set out to be a vegetarian*. Growing up there were few signs I would take this path. I ate meat and three veg for just about every dinner as a kid. Most holidays I went to my grandparents’ farm – so I knew where meat came from. In fact, from a very young age I saw many sheep killed with the slice of a carving knife to the throat. Alive. Dead. In the time it took to blink. The animal would be bled before the carcass was butchered so we could take home a boot full of lamb chops and shanks. I can’t remember what I thought of the executions in the old shearing shed.

My most vivid memories are the smells – a mixture of wool and sheep shit. I don’t recall being disturbed by the casual slaughter, although I can’t say the same about the first time I took a life. It was on the same farm when I became bored of shooting cans with an air rifle so I took aim at a sparrow. I missed. Many times.

Growing up there were few signs I would take this path…” Until I put the gun up so close to the poor bird it didn’t have a chance, its body dropping to the ground. Alive. Dead. In the time it took to blink. The guilt fell on me just as quickly. An act of violence for no other reason than to

pass the time. The first swipe of the paintbrush had started to steer me towards the corner. But it would take three decades to become fully trapped. I bought acreage in the Sunshine Coast hinterland and convinced myself I would produce all my own food; grow vegies and fruit, raise chickens and sheep. Then something happened I didn’t expect. I could pick the fruit, collect the eggs and loosen the lettuce from the soil, but I couldn’t kill a chook and throw it in the pot. Who was I to decide whether a creature should live or die? And since I couldn’t do the deed myself, how could I expect others to do it for me? So here I sit in the corner of the room looking at the glossy red floor, still wet and unwelcoming. *I still eat fish, justifying it through the delusion that I could kill a fish.
