ne of the first books I fell in love with was Eric Carle’s The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Around 41 million copies have sold worldwide, two of which are now on my son’s overflowing bookshelf. I may have been young, but this book sparked a lifelong passion for the written word. Obviously, my literary tastes have matured somewhat in the past 25 or so years and today, I struggle to pinpoint a favourite author or title. What has remained, is the joy I feel at the thought of curling up with a good book. Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body. We know it’s good for us, we know we’ll feel great afterwards, but unfortunately it comes down to time. The good news is that holidays are just around the corner. It’s a great time to take a break and stretch out on the sand with a book. In this week’s feature story, Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane takes a look at the hottest reads for summer and speaks with Coast identities about their reading suggestions. SUMMER READING GUIDE

here’s nothing quite like curling up in the sun with a book and delving into another world. With authors from all over the world continually surprising us with tales of adventure, suspense and romance, it is hard to know where to start when picking the next cover to open. My Weekly Preview has spoken to Sunshine Coast locals who can often be found with their noses in books to compile a list of great summer reads you can dive into these holidays. and his mother’s ceaseless love. I think Max is the epitome of a child’s essential resilience. The Lost Thing, Shaun Tan Who hasn’t felt lost at some point in their lives? Or collected a peculiar object and wondered where it belongs? Through his understated narrative voice and whimsical illustrations, I am constantly charmed by Shaun Tan’s ability to turn the familiar into something strange.
Dr Ross Watkins began teaching Creative Writing at the University of the Sunshine Coast in 2006. Watkins’ latest release, One Photo is an illustrated book that explores dementia, photography and family legacy. His award-winning short fiction and non-fiction has been published in national and international anthologies. We asked him to reflect on his all-time favourite books: Where the Wild Things Are, Maurice Sendak Beneath the apparent simplicity of Sendak’s prose lurks a sophisticated example of picture books at their best. Max certainly is a wild thing who should be sent to his bedroom, yet he’s also an imaginative boy who, through his journey to be king of all wild things, learns the value of empathy

The Road, Cormac McCarthy Minimalist and bleak, I first read this as a new father and found my heart aching for McCarthy’s father and son as they pick their way through desolation towards hope. A post-apocalyptic novel, McCarthy avoids the usual dystopian plot-trap of having to explain the cataclysmic event – just as words have lost the objects they were once tethered to, what ended the world as we know it is also meaningless. All that’s needed now is the survival of a torch-bearer for the good in us.
The Tree of Man, Patrick White Although Patrick White was highly contentious and belligerent, he sure knew the complexities of what it is to be human, and he knew how to portray those complexities with exquisite depth in his characters. White’s work appears to belong now to an outdated style of writing, yet he taught me how to stretch my mind into and across a narrative world with extravagance. Written on the Body, Jeanette Winterson In this lyrical elegy to an adulterous lover, Winterson captures the allconsuming passion and subsequent grief of short-lived love. Although Louise’s body is lost to cancer and science, the nongendered narrator goes about reconstructing her by writing memory into a ‘love poem’. Winterson is a stunning literary stylist.
Young Buderim author Lynette Noni is the mastermind behind the young adult fantasy series: The Medoran Chronicles. Book one, Arkanae, was released in February 2015, book two, Raelia, was released in March this year and the highly-anticipated Draekora, will be available in April 2017. Here, Noni shares some of her favourite reads:
The Harry Potter series, J.K. Rowling It’s a cliché favourite, but nevertheless true. The beloved boy-wizard and his magical world cemented my obsession with the fantasy genre at a young age, inspiring me to become an author so I could offer the same kind of escapism to my readers that Rowling gave to me. The Throne of Glass series, Sarah J. Maas This was a slow-build series for me, one that I was on the fence about for the first two books. But the third book blew my mind, as did the fourth and fifth, and I’m literally counting down the days for when the conclusion will hit shelves next year. It has everything you could want—action, adventure, suspense, romance and friendship, with a huge helping of assassins and magic on the side – making it easily one of my favourite series of all time. The Shatter Me trilogy, Tahereh Mafi This is one of those series that readers either love or hate. And that is because of the writing itself. It’s filled with purple prose, which is normally a literary no-no, but in this case, Mafi paints pictures with her words to an overall stunning effect. Never before have I been so captivated by the actual writing in a book than I was while experiencing the beauty of this series. Caloundra Powerboat Club. Here, Barber shares her top reads: Atlas Shrugged, Ayn Rand This is a beautifully-written book celebrating work and industry. Rand was born in Communist Russia and came to live in the USA. She called herself ‘an American by choice’. This contrast of ideologies comes to life in her writing. It’s a great book about ‘what if’. She takes welfare to an extreme, and shows what could happen in a world that kills initiative and free enterprise. Mary Barber was gutted when her local bookshop was replaced with a mobile phone store. Spurred to action, she started the first Tamarind Book Club in Caloundra in October 2013. The club now has nine groups that meet once a month, with all meetings held at the
Author Dave Dawson’s Salt of the Sea chronicles the stories of some of the colourful characters he has met during his 20 years in the commercial fishing industry. The Sunshine Coast local shares his favourite ocean-based page-turners: The Old Man and The Sea, Ernest Hemingway An absolute classic. I’ve read this book numerous times, it never grows old. This short novel is the captivating tale of an epic battle between man and fish, but it offers so much more as it delves deeply into the limits of human endurance, courage, desperation and compassion.
The Boys in the Boat, Daniel James Brown This book surprised me. I don’t usually go in for stories about sport but this one got me in. It’s about Joe Rantz, one of the rowers in the eight-oar crew from the University of
Moby-Dick, Herman Melville Moby-Dick is a long and challenging masterpiece. It’s challenging because it’s a work of fiction written in a poetic old English style, but it also has a factual historical basis. If you persevere, you will be rewarded with a beautifully written, captivating adventure focused on one man’s unreasonable obsession with a mighty white whale. It’s amazing to consider that just a couple of generations ago we relied very heavily upon whale oil and that there were whaling stations on nearly every cape, in Australia – Cape Moreton and Cape Byron for example. Stoked, Bob McTavish A great tale from surfing and shaping pioneer Bob McTavish featuring iconic Sunny Coast surf breaks such as Noosa, Alex and Moffat headlands, back in the days when they were all connected by dirt roads. No crowds, amazing waves, single fins, new designs. Hitchhiking along the coast from break to break, sleeping on surf club benches and the back seats of cars. No job, no care, no responsibilities – just an obsession with the next perfect wave.

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows This is a delightful book. Misleading in its simplicity, it throws you into some heavy territory – war, starvation, humiliation, bullying, dobbing on your mates. There are also many light-hearted moments. Juliet, the central character is a writer who survived the Second World War. Presented as a series of letters, this is an easy book to pick up, dip into and put down again. It’s a five-star read.

WHY LIANE MORIARTY LOVES HER SUNSHINE COAST HOLIDAYS Liane Moriarty is familiar with the Sunshine Coast’s attractions – our region has been a retreat of sorts for the world-renowned author. Moriarty has visited the Coast twice since December last year, the latest in August where she met with fans to discuss her latest novel, Truly Madly Guilty. The Sydney-based author of six international best-selling novels says she’ll be back this summer. “It’s our favourite spot for family holidays because it’s a very short plane ride and the beaches, the weather and the people are all wonderful,” she says. Her 2014 novel, Big Little Lies, debuted at number one on the New York Times bestseller list, making Moriarty the first Australian author to achieve this feat. She is also one of the few authors in the world to ever have three books on the prestigious list at the same time. The author says she never dreamed of the success she would achieve when she was spurred to write her first book during a sibling rivalry with sister Jaclyn. Moriarty wrote Three Wishes while studying at Macquarie University in Sydney and the rest is history. “I absolutely didn’t think about where my writing would take me at all. It was enough just to be published,” she says. “It has been an exciting, surreal experience seeing Big Little Lies turned into an HBO series by Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon, but the most exciting experience of all is still seeing someone reading one of my books.” Moriarty encourages aspiring writers to think of nothing other than their story. “Just lose yourself in the pleasure of writing your story. Then edit, edit, edit. Then, and only then, should you think about the world of publishing, or what makes a bestseller, or should you self-publish or not,” she says.

A study* released in April 2016 gives new hope for people suffering with disc injuries. Disc injuries can cause havoc with the spine and also irritate, compress or sometimes pinch on the nerves. The neck and back pain can also lead to leg pain or arm pain. Sydney researcher and Chiropractor, Dr Adrian Denerwall has been developing specific traction tools to help with disc injuries. These tools were used in this latest American University based study of 60 people with disc injuries. NRL STORM TO HIT NEW-LOOK STADIUM Tickets are now on sale for the Melbourne Storm and NZ Warriors NRL trial game at the Sunshine Coast Stadium early next year. This will be the first match to be played at the new-look stadium which is undergoing a $2.5-million upgrade to boost its capacity to 10,000 while spectator enjoyment will also be boosted by an LED big screen to show replays, information and live action. $3600 SCULPTURE STUNS A life-sized Plesiosaurus has emerged from the sands of Mooloolaba Beach, giving beachgoers a sneak peak of SEA LIFE Sunshine Coast’s new Jurassic Seas exhibit. Professional sand sculptor Peter Papamanolis captivated crowds for two days as he carved the prehistoric sea creature from four tonnes of sand, ahead of the opening of Jurassic Seas on December 8. SEA LIFE Sunshine Coast’s general manager Quinn Clarke says the sculpture is the ideal introduction to Jurassic Seas, which will guide visitors through a prehistoric period when dinosaurs roamed the Earth.
Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service staff at Caloundra Health Service have raised more than $3600 for the Sunshine Coast team at Orange Sky Laundry. The laundry is the world’s first free mobile service for the homeless. The money was raised as Caloundra Hospital staff join together for a weekly morning tea and give a gold coin donation. It costs Orange Sky Laundry $6 to wash and dry someone’s clothes, so the donation will provide more than 600 laundry loads.
NEPTUNE LIVES AT AIR MUSEUM Volunteers at the Queensland Air Museum are well on the way to fully restoring a recovered Lockheed Neptune P2 from Mareeba. The 30-tonne ex-RAAF aircraft was disassembled, loaded onto six trucks and transported to QAM’s Caloundra headquarters. Volunteers then worked tirelessly to restore the 32-metre wingspan, two 18-cylinder radial engines and its spare, and two jet engines. The fuselage is now almost complete, the main engines attached and the wings and tail are ready for assembly. CYCLISTS GEAR UP FOR BUDERIM 9 CHALLENGE

endricus ‘Henk’ Vogels has lived on Buderim’s Mons Road for a number of years and has marvelled at the gathering of hundreds of people each year for the Buderim 9 Challenge. It wasn’t long before the former ToyotaUnited Pro Cycling Team road bicycle racer, who retired from competition at the end of the 2008 season, joined the hype. Vogels has become the ambassador for the fifth annual event and says he looks forward to taking on the 75-kilometre course with people of all ages and abilities and the backing of the Sunshine Coat Cycling Club,

It’s great that people want to do it,” he says. “I know a 74-year-old cycling champion is tackling the hills and the whole community also gets involved and gets behind it.” Cyclists taking on the ultimate challenge of cycling nine of Buderim’s best hills in three hours have raised more than $60,000 for the CPL in the past three years to fund their Choice, Passion and Life programs, which help Sunshine Coast families with children

CPL Sunshine Coast service manager Carmel Smith says for every client they support, there are five more Queenslanders who need their help. “Funds raised from Buderim 9 go directly to CPL clients (children up to 18 years old) on the Sunshine Coast to assist families to purchase specialised equipment, including specialised beds, iPads, assistive technologies, shower chairs, headrests for wheelchairs, walking aids as well as funds for sibling support groups and gap payments for specialised equipment,” Smith says. “With Buderim 9 funds, children receive their equipment quickly, they can access their communities and the financial burden is eased for families. “Equipment helps to give the children freedom of choice, the opportunity to chase their passion and the support to live the life they choose.” Smith says the Buderim 9 Challenge is a remarkable event. “Not only is it a feat of perseverance and commitment, it also brings the whole community together for an important purpose,” she says. Buderim 9 was founded by Greg Paix, the Sunshine Coast Cycling Club vice president
and father to teenager Josh, who is one of more than 100 children that the CPL Sunshine Coast team based at Maroochydore support. Josh was named the biggest fundraiser at last year’s event, raising more than $16,000 for CPL. There is still time to get on board, with entries closing on December 12. TOURISM BOSSES PRAISE COAST’S RECORD YEAR

A
recent visit to the Sunshine Coast by the Airbnb’s Australia and New Zealand country manager, Sam McDonagh, confirmed what many of us already know – tourism on the Coast has picked up in a big way. Addressing the Sunshine Coast Economic Futures Board and business leaders at Aussie World last Friday, McDonagh said the Coast is one of Airbnb’s most popular destinations. “In the broader Sunshine Coast area we currently have around 2800 listings on Airbnb,” he tells My Weekly Preview. “That’s grown by more than 113 per cent year over year. It’s one of the fastest growing hosting areas in Australia and we know people use Airbnb on the Sunshine Coast because they want to have the opportunity to live like a local.” McDonagh visits the Coast every two to three months and says he always stays in Airbnb accommodation. “One of the things we see particularly on the Sunshine Coast is the Airbnb hosts tend to be a little older and are certainly great hosts – among the highest rated hosts. They always have great tips for local restaurants and activities for their guests to participate in while they’re on the coast. “I recently had a Sunshine Coast

That’s the kind of thing you see happen on Airbnb every day. “We certainly expect to continue to bring guests to the Sunshine Coast in the tens of thousands on an annual basis and we expect
that number to continue to grow significantly in the next 12 months to two years.” Visit Sunshine Coast CEO Simon Latchford acknowledges our local hotel industry has different views on Airbnb’s presence on the Coast, but believes the sharing economy is here to stay. “Airbnb is something I’m pretty careful of,” he says. “We have no natural involvement with them but we see it as another evolution of the world and it’s consumer driven. “We’re very conscious of our members and their opinion. It’s an interesting place to watch. People have very strong views on it, particularly those people who own hotels, motels and B&Bs, and I totally understand their point of view. But we have to understand how we can live together and work together.” While some in the hotel industry fear Airbnb could create an accommodation grey market, we’re certainly attracting more than enough visitors to go around. The Sunshine Coast Airport announced in November it had attracted over one million annual passengers for the first time and with the drive market complementing the growth in air traffic, the Sunshine Coast grew its domestic visitor numbers by 7.8 per cent to 3.1 million for the year, and expenditure grew by 6.2 per cent to $1.9 billion, the region’s best
domestic figures in more than a decade. The international market recorded 3.5 per cent growth to 366,000 visitors and expenditure increased by 26.7 per cent to $245.3 million for 2015/16. “We’ve had an outstanding year,” Latchford says. “Wotif recently announced the Sunshine Coat was the second most requested holiday destination for Australians for upcoming holidays. The only one that pipped us was the Gold Coast. With all due respect, they’ve got a $20 million marketing budget; we have all up about $4.2 million. Instagram has begun to roll out live video to its users, alongside a ‘disappearing video’ feature similar to that of rival social media app Snapchat. AN UNBREAKABLE BOND Chloe Greenland wasn’t prepared for the impact a group of Cambodian orphans with disabilities would have on her life. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw

hloe Greenland fell in love with little Chiwan the day she met him. The 21-year-old from Moffat Beach finished school in 2012 and planned to spend four months in 2013 volunteering at a Cambodian orphanage for children with special needs. Four months became four years and Greenland now calls Cambodia home and the orphans, her children. Chiwan is one of 114 orphans with special needs living at the National Borey for Infants and Children in Phnom Penh. The children, aged newborn and up, either have a disability, HIV or both. Chiwan, who is blind in one eye, found a special place in Greenland’s heart and she has brought him to the Sunshine Coast for specialised medical treatment. “He’s my little boy,” she says. “I fell in love with him the first day I saw him. He’s a very cute little boy; he’s a bit quieter than the others. I could see his potential – he’s so smart. I just had a lot of fun with him and I was just drawn to him. He’s so helpful with all the other children. He was only three when I met him and he would help with feeding the other kids. He and his brother – who is blind in both eyes and has severe autism – were brought to the orphanage when they were one. On the report it said they were passed around a couple of group homes during their first year. We don’t know who their parents are.” Greenland’s family helped her bring Chiwan to Australia, overcoming bureaucratic obstacles to allow him to seek treatment for his vision impairment. “My parents have funded everything,” Greenland says. “It has been a huge task and I will be forever grateful. We found we can’t fix his blind eye – it would be too traumatic for him. He has a small cataract on his good eye and we’ve managed to improve his eyesight by three times. We got him glasses and we’ll just keep his good eye strong and just watch it over time.” In Cambodia Chiwan shares a room with 20 children, so his Sunshine Coast visit has been unlike anything he’s known. “He absolutely loves it here,” says Greenland. “He calls my mum and dad Mama and Papa, he loves the beach, he’s become a little water baby. He’s getting a lot of attention and I think he’s really enjoyed being here. We’ve looked into adoption but it’s really difficult to adopt children from Cambodia.” Greenland and Chiwan are due to fly back to Cambodia this week, a bittersweet reality for Greenland’s family. “My parents would rather have me living here but they’ve been to Cambodia and have met the kids and understand why I’m doing what I do. They’re always helping me share the load.” Greenland says she grew up around disability – her aunt runs a respite centre in Caboolture – so this work felt like a natural fit. However, she didn’t realise just how involved she

would become when she set off for her gap year. “The first four months I was taking care of the children – they are very disabled, so I was feeding them, cleaning them, playing with them, doing daily physiotherapy with them. In Cambodia there’s such a big stigma around disability. Often the parents leave them with the grandparents and once they die, they don’t have anyone to care for them.” For 18 months, Greenland split her time between Cambodia and Australia: “I was living in limbo; I was always saving money to get back there. I was so invested in them.” In March, she moved to Cambodia permanently and was subsequently employed by BraveHearts Program, the organisation that provides funding for the orphanage (not to be confused with the Queensland organisation Bravehearts). She still cares for the children but is also tasked with fundraising. With 160 people living there in total (including carers), expenses are high. “I said to my boss, we need to be as transparent as possible because there’s such a stigma around fake orphanages. People are questioning where the money is going when they donate to charities. We need to prove our money is being spent on the
children – provide photos, give receipts, be open.” She says a $10 donation buys 60 nutritional shakes for the children, $20 buys a week’s worth of disposable nappies, $50 provides medicine for 10 children for a month and $100 pays for one child’s physiotherapy for a year. “If someone from Australia was looking in they’d say, these children have nothing, but they get fed three times a day and get snacks in between – they lead quite a normal life compared to if they were living on the street. “It used to be the culture that drew me to Cambodia – it’s a wonderful culture. But now it has come down to the kids. The kids keep me coming back. They’re amazing. They’ve taught me so much – compassion, empathy. We have so much and we take so much for granted. These kids have absolutely nothing but they are so content and so happy with the smallest things. “Often volunteers say, I don’t know if I’m helping. I say, you’re putting a smile on their face and that makes their day. Some might not have a lot of time left. “The kids at the orphanage have become my family and I wouldn’t change anything. I’ve seen a lot of bad stuff and had a lot of ups and downs, but I wouldn’t change a thing.”

SCHOOL’S OUT FOR SUMMER
ARE ONE NATION’S DAYS NUMBERED?
Sami Muirhead has nothing but praise for the teachers who have guided her daughter through her first year of school.

H
ow are you holding up, mums and dads? It is a pretty crazy time of year, isn’t it? No one told me the end of our first year at Prep at school for our daughter would be so incredibly emotional. My heart goes out to all those parents with graduating kids from high school. I cannot begin to imagine how you are feeling. It has been a wonderful year watching my little five-year-old spread her wings and find connections in the outside world. I felt heartbroken that first day of school in January this year and I was so sad to ‘lose’ my little ray of sunshine. I was not really ready for her to stop being my shadow. All I could think of was how much less bright my days would be. How would I cope without a constant second heartbeat at my feet wearing some ridiculously cute outfit? Fast forward to what seemed a few months and it is the end of the year. It turns out I did not lose my daughter but in fact gained a whole classroom of families and the support and guidance of some angels who pretend to be teachers. Those angels helped me all year by wrapping their arms around my little girl when I could not be there. They wiped noses and applied Band-Aids to her scraped knees.
They praised her scribbles that were actually unicorns dashing across a magic field and were patient with long-winded stories that probably made no sense to them. They instilled kindness and lots of wisdom to my little one about learning and about life. And somehow on top of that they found time to teach her to read and write. They also found time to reply to my barrage of emails fretting I had not applied enough sunscreen to my daughter or lamenting I had not packed her hat. They were patient with my two young boys who explored (read: wrecked) the classroom each morning and would often cry when the ‘pack up’ song played because it meant we had to leave the lovely safe classroom, and their big sister, until the afternoon. We would blow our cherub a kiss and look at all of those divine little faces who were so excited for the adventures that lay ahead that day. So to Ms O’Brien and Mrs Rodgers and to all the teachers on the Coast, I say the biggest thank you. Enjoy your break restoring your bodies and minds. And for now, I have my little girl back home trailing me around everywhere. And you know all she can talk about? Going back to school to be with her friends. I will be packing the tissues with the silly hat – if I ever find it.

I
mages of Pauline Hanson popping the champagne at the news of an incipient Trump presidency have reportedly rattled the local LNP. The liberating of the bubbles onto the Parliamentary lawn may, however, have been premature, as may concerns of the Queensland Parliament being swamped by Hansonites. There are a number of reasons to suppose that Australians, and in particular Queenslanders, will not choose to exercise their vote so clearly against their own interests as those unfortunates who plumped for Trump. The track record of One Nation in Queensland politics is notable. One Nation previously achieved considerable public support in Queensland. The State election in 1998 was the high watermark of the party’s popularity, gaining 22.7 per cent of the vote and 11 seats in the Queensland Parliament. What happened soon after this seismic shift in Queensland politics is instructive. By 1999, the One Nation party had imploded, splitting into the City Country Alliance and a group of independents. It may be that this fragmentation can be sheeted home to inadequate vetting by the party of the candidates, prior to the election. If so, then the recent turmoil between Senators Hanson and Culleton does not augur well for the future. The calibre of candidates is questionable at best. The Queensland secretary of the party, Jim Savage, has gone on the record
saying the party will field candidates in any seat where a quality candidate can be found. Recent form again is not hopeful for One Nation. Senator for Queensland, Malcolm Roberts, appears to be typical of the problem. A former coal miner, Roberts has devoted a decade to denying climate change. While both Roberts and Hanson were able to gain Senate seats with 9.2 per cent of the Queensland Senate vote, there are signs that achieving Queensland State seats, requiring substantially higher numbers, may be more difficult for candidates like Roberts. A recent survey of 1300 primary producers throughout Australia revealed

The Trump supporters will soon find their chosen demagogue never had their interests at heart. An unprecedented wave of buyer’s remorse is anticipated. It would be a shame for Queensland to once again experiment with One Nation. It may be the people of Queensland have moved on in the past two decades and are no longer prepared to give away their vote in protest so casually.

he iron ore price had another boost following Donald Trump’s election win, as speculation grew that a fiscal policy-led infrastructure boom was on the cards. If true, this would provide medium- to long-term demand for the material. Near-term support for iron ore also remains positive. At the time of writing, iron ore was around US$72 a tonne up 12 per cent for the month and 67 per cent over the past year. In particular, the latest round of Chinese economic data remains supportive of steel demand: • Chinese property prices continue to improve (property represents 42 per cent of steel demand in China • Floor space starts are up • Fixed asset investment has grown 20 per cent year-on-year and the Manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index is improving – it’s the best reading in two years • New loans are rising • Infrastructure spending is solid (this category represents a quarter of the country’s steel demand). In our view, the critical real estate and infrastructure sectors appear healthy, thereby underpinning improving steel demand. Chinese steel production in September rose to a rate of 829 million tonnes per annum (MTPA). In terms of iron ore production, September-quarter production reports from the major miners were mixed, with BHP Billiton (265Mtpa) and Rio Tinto (321Mtpa) shipments lower than our forecast, while Fortescue Metals (174Mtpa)
and Brazil-based Vale (365Mtpa) were slightly ahead of estimates. Further on prices, iron ore markets remain buoyant, based on the combination of healthy demand and positive lead indicators, along with a general rally in commodity prices. We remain positive on Fortescue and Rio Tinto, which continue to see consensus earnings upgrades. There is even discussion that Rio Tinto could provide some capital management initiatives, such as a special dividend, at its February result, given its debt position now sits at the lower end of its targeted range, a prospect unthinkable 12 months ago when commodity prices were in freefall. Meet the reindeer and pay Santa Claus a visit in Finnish Lapland
WINTER WONDERLAND Dreaming of a white Christmas? Lapping up an Arctic festive season is easier than you may think.
I
’m knee-deep in snow, slush pelting in my face and my six-year-old daughter Rosie is whimpering behind me. “You hate it, don’t you?” asks Sebby, our guide. It’s not a question I thought I’d ever be asked in Lapland, particularly on the cusp of Christmas. We’re sat atop a Ski-Doo, me at the front, Rosie clinging on for dear life at the back. About 10 minutes ago, we came to standstill in a big pile of fluffy snow, and now we’ve

narrowly missed a tree and appear to be precariously balancing at a 45-degree angle. As Sebby pulls us out (again), I manage to find some inner strength to stop myself hopping off and hiking back. Rosie has a face like a wet weekend and declares she’s never getting on with me ever again. So our once-in-a-lifetime trip hasn’t quite brought out my inner child just yet, and we’re also having trouble tracking down the man we’re here to see.
Every day, we climb on a coach in search of Santa and his elves and today, we’re told he’s been spotted with the reindeer. Bearing in mind there are more reindeer than people here in Luosto – slap bang in the middle of Finnish Lapland – this could be tricky, but we head off to find a lovely man called Anssi, who goes by the title of “reindeer man” and looks after Rudolph and his friends. Warming our feet by the fire, he tells us how reindeer learn to walk about 10 minutes after birth and can run within an hour. It seems fitting to see some of this running for ourselves and, as a sky of candyfloss pink, baby blue and marmalade syrup opens up all around us, we take our seats for the ride of our lives.
It’s minus five degrees (pretty warm for December) and Rosie and I snuggle up under a smelly old blanket and animal skin, staring up at a reindeer’s backside. “Mush,” Rosie commands, and before we know it, our sled is swooshing through the most picture-perfect Christmas card scene imaginable. It’s icy cold, but deeply relaxing, and if I could stop marvelling at the Narnia-esque surroundings, I might just fall asleep. After our reindeer ride, we warm our insides with some hot berry juice before Rosie runs off to make friends with the elves. There are 30 or so elves here, helping Father Christmas make and deliver toys. So far, Rosie’s thrown snowballs at Tricky Dicky, had a running race with Speedy Sam and

buried Noisy Ned’s bell in the snow. But there’s one special elf she’s fallen a little bit in love with. Her name is Snowy Bowy. She’s dressed in an elaborate white and turquoise gown, wears an enormous crown on her head and has sparkles on her face. After dinner we’re cosying up in our Alpine lodge warmed by a real fire, when there’s a knock at the door. Snowy Bowy has arrived to read a bedtime story. The following morning, rumour has it Santa’s been visiting the huskies, so we head up to the farm to seek him out. The dogs bark almost constantly unless they’re running, but as we get set for a husky ride, I hear a mention of the word “driver”. My heart sinks a little. But, one of our coach reps comes to the rescue and Rosie and I sit down, while he runs along, steering the sled from behind. The dogs pick up speed as we slide and swirl through the icy white winter wonderland. The downhill runs are by far the most exciting as we get gather pace, but as we come to the end of the ride, there’s still no sign of Santa. We’re about to give up all hope when we’re told elf Wendy Wood needs our help. It’s pitch black and we clamber into a great big sleigh lit up with twinkling fairy lights. a campfire on top of the hill. We’re singing Christmas songs and listening to Hans Christian Andersen tales when Rosie’s name is called. We head up the steps to a wooden house, knock on the door to find Wendy Wood, who leads us to Santa. Rosie’s eyes do all the talking as she stares in silent adoration, listening and receiving her gift. When we head back outside, she tells me she’s “absolutely certain that’s the real Santa”. As the kids party with the elves, I sneak off to realise a Christmas wish of my own. Speeding through fresh tracks, snowflakes falling thick and heavy, I’m on an adultsonly night Ski-Doo safari. As we reach the top of the mountain, we switch off the lights and sit in the dark, dark night. For a minute, it feels like I’ve returned to my childhood as we chatter in the darkness. AIRPORT HITS ONE MILLION It’s celebration time for our Sunshine Coast Airport which has hit the one million passenger mark for the first time in a 12-month period. The milestone, 55 years in the making, continues an incredible period of growth and development for our region’s air traffic gateway. WHEN THE TOURISTS FLOCKED TO THE RANGE A trip to the top of the Blackall Range was the big drawcard for holidaymakers a century ago, and those who made the journey were rewarded with an “exhilarating atmosphere”, writes DOT WHITTINGTON

iss T. Pickering, advertising her superior new boarding house Manjalda in 1925, billed Montville as “The Blue Mountains of Queensland”. This “splendid health resort” had hot and cold baths, excellent cuisine and was “lighted throughout.” Miss Pickering’s advertisement appeared in the Queensland Intelligence and Tourist Bureau’s booklet From Noosa to the Tweed, which referred to Montville as the “Queen of the Blackall Range”. Descriptions of the area were poetic: “On reaching the top the different quality of the atmosphere is noted. It is the genuinely cool, exhilarating atmosphere of mountain heights in a temperate climate.” Visitors could find recreation in pleasant
THIS MONTH IN HISTORY After 70 years in Pomona, Noosa Shire Council relocated its offices to Pelican Street, Tewantin in December 1980. The new building boasted air conditioning, 10 telephone lines and a staff of 39. The Queensland Government Gazette of 1872, had proclaimed: “Town reserve, Noosa River, 640 acres”. Cooran and Cootharaba were the first two towns settled.

walks through wooded lanes and already, efforts were being made to preserve the amenity, as the booklet commended “the artistic sense which decided that construction at Montville should not involve total destruction”. It was also noted that “Montville is a much newer settlement than Buderim, which is of lower elevation but it has many similar characteristics.” Another favoured boarding house was Elston, a “first class boarding establishment commanding extensive views of mountain, valley, sea and scrub… ideal for a real holiday”. It had a tennis court, waterfall and could offer trout and cod fishing in Obi Obi Creek, a comfortable walk from Montville. The creek rushed through a gorge or canyon known as The Narrows, hence Narrows Road leading down to Lake Baroon, which became the Maroochy region’s major water supply in 1989. But in 1925, Obi Obi Creek boasted freshwater cod weighing up to 1.4 kilograms. And if fishing wasn’t your thing,
you could always try some excellent sport with a gun in the adjacent scrubs. On a clear night, guests could see the light of the Double Island lighthouse and the South Passage light on Moreton Island. This was also a salad bowl, with mandarins, oranges, limes, lemons, pineapples, papaws, passionfruit, bananas and custard apples all grown profitably. One farmer with a property extending down the steep side of the range, had almost 1000 papaw trees bearing fruit, which he claimed was the largest papaw plantation “this side of the equator”. To reach this paradise it was necessary to take the North Coast Railway to Palmwoods. Trains left Brisbane at 8.10am to arrive in Palmwoods at 11.07am. Visitors then boarded a coach at midday for the 10-kilometre journey up the range. Finally they arrived in Montville at 2.30pm. Quite a day. There are still plenty of guest houses to enjoy the fresh mountain air but for the past 50 years, the Range has increasingly been handing its resort title to the beaches.

DID YOU KNOW? Mapleton School pupils had fruit packing lessons at various orchards and sheds in the 1920s and 1930s. The pupils were taught grading, wrapping, and packing fruit and how to calculate the number of oranges in each case. They won fruit packing medals at the Brisbane Exhibition in the 1930s. Television fame came to the Range in the 1970s, when an advertisement for Amoco petrol featured a sports car cruising along the Range Road between Maleny and Montville. The 50th Anniversary of the Naming of the Sunshine Coast will be celebrated on August 1, 2017. In the lead up to the occasion, My Weekly Preview will each week take a look into our region’s past. I
’ve decided that marriage should come with a stenographer. You know, one of those people who sits in court all day and types out every word they hear? Seriously, I reckon most women have an inbuilt stenographer and can access brain files and throw quotes at you word for word from every conversation, EVER. I could do with some help here because I struggle to remember what’s just been said… and worse than that, I struggle to remember what’s just been said.
Example. The mother of my four wee-uns lambasted me for double-booking a day out last weekend, saying this is what happens when I don’t listen, or something like that. I dunno, I wasn’t really listening. It’s like the time Michelle started yelling “are you even listening to anything I’m saying?” and I was like man, what a strange way to start a conversation. Then she said I treat our marriage like it’s some kind of game. Which sadly cost her four points and a bonus chance. I felt pretty bad about being such a lame husband so I suggested she come home at lunch for a quickie. She told me it’s pronounced quiche. Ouch. Something I’ve been loving lately is how my bed appears to be a magical place where I remember all the stuff I need to do. Bills, car service, clean the gutters, Christmas presents. I’ve seriously gotta stop this late night binge thinking. It’s not just everyday chores that keep me awake at night, it’s much more serious issues like getting an answer to the big questions such as, surely not EVERYBODY was kung fu fighting? I mean there was other stuff getting done, right? Like baking bread, driving buses, building stuff. This had been troubling me for months.
Turns out, it was the ‘70’s, Bruce Lee was pretty big and most of the kids were kung fu fighting but not all. The song should perhaps be re-named Almost Everybody Was Kung Fu Fighting. Or Quite A Few Were Kung Fu Fighting But Some Mowed Lawns. You get my drift. Thanks to my buddy Dicko for sorting me out there. He also pointed out that many songs don’t really stand up to solid scrutiny, like Do They Know It’s Christmas? where they sing “…and there won’t be snow in Africa this Christmas time”. Yeah, no snow except on the peak of Mount Kilimanjaro. Of course there’s another big one: ‘We built this city on rock n roll’. Yeah don’t wanna kill your buzz Starship, but there’s a bit more to building a city than rock n roll, like town planning and engineering. Don’t get me started on Alanis Morissette’s Ironic. “It’s like ten thousand spoons when all you need is a knife…” Less irony, more an inconvenience really. Now I’ve got that stuff off my chest, it’s time to rip into a few cold frothy chops and this week’s brew is an absolute treat. TEST YOUR METAL The Amity Affliction prepare to rock the Coast.

t has been more than a decade since The Amity Affliction formed in Gympie, and the small-town hardcore and metalcore band with big dreams has taken the world by storm. Ahren Stringer, Joel Birch, Ryan ‘Humpty Dumpty’ Burt, Kyle Yocum and Dan Brown recently returned from an extensive tour, playing to seas of people on the European summer festival circuit. This came off the back of a sold-out I Bring the Weather With Me tour along the East Coast. They are now back in the Northern Hemisphere to perform a string of concerts before hitting the Sunshine Coast next month on their Death to Misery regional tour. The Amity Affliction have won legions of fans by confronting the darkest aspects of human existence through their music, fuelled by front man Stringer’s battle with depression and substance abuse. Far from locking his pain away, Stringer draws on his personal challenges and channels them into heart-wrenching lyrics that people going through any type of struggle can connect with. Their latest visit to the Coast will be a
celebration of the recently released This Could Be Heartbreak, which was sitting at number one on the iTunes chart and scored them the cover of the Rolling Stone magazine in November. The acclaimed album follows their ARIA platinum-certified number one album, Let The Ocean Take Me, which was an international breakout success for the group and was also the second consecutive time topping the ARIA Album Chart following 2012’s gold-certified Chasing Ghosts. More recently, the band released Seems Like Forever, the ARIA gold-certified documentary chronicling their history through to their epic Let The Ocean Take Me world tour, which saw The Amity Affliction performing in front of capacity crowds around the globe, including sold-out shows at New York City’s Irving Plaza and London’s KOKO. unshine Coast-based building company Ausmar Group will unveil its new office building and state-ofthe-art design studio Atelier in Maroochydore next week. Mayor Mark Jamieson will officially open the $3.5 million facility on Tuesday, December 13. Ausmar Group director Tony Bryan says in addition to housing the company’s 60-plus staff, the Maroochydore headquarters also includes the company’s innovative design studio, Atelier, which will serve as a one-stop-shop for new home builders to view all the available products and finishes. “Whether it’s bathroom tiles, tapware, timber flooring or kitchen cabinetry, the new showroom provides a space for our clients to see and touch each of the options available so they can select their preferred look and feel for their dream home,” Tony says. “There really isn’t another facility of this kind on the Sunshine Coast, where prospective home builders can view all of the products under one roof, so we are very proud of Atelier and how it will enhance our customer experience.” Tony says 85 local contractors spent 10 months constructing the impressive new headquarters and Atelier. “Three years of client research and careful planning have gone into designing the building and we’re really proud of the balance we’ve struck between functionality and aesthetic appeal,” he says. “Since 2006, we’ve won more than 60 awards for our building projects, so we knew we had to put all our efforts into making this a really special space for clients and staff alike.” Fellow Ausmar director Tim Hendy says having been in operation on the Sunshine Coast for more than 20 years, Ausmar Group

Interior designer Jess Goebel from IssieMae, who styles all of Ausmar’s display homes, says stylists are drawing inspiration from the calm, muted tones of cool grey, white and cream that are seen everywhere in Scandinavian interiors. “Designs are kept simple and usually stylise the natural environment,” she says. “Scandinavian design is often equated with being modern and stark, but such an assertion is commonly just a stereotype.” Jess says despite symmetry and clarity, Scandinavian designs always radiate

Ausmar Commercial were engaged to deliver this project, which incorporated the main club building, the Golf Academy building and the maintenance sheds. The golf club building comprises of a function room with commercial kitchen, restaurant and bar, gaming lounges, pro shop, offices and amenities/change rooms. The main entrance features an architecturally-designed porte cochere supported by stone-clad structural columns. A similar structure is also constructed at the back of the building overlooking the golf course. Finishes include a combination of dry stone clad walls, rendered walls, panelled cladding and feature timber ceilings. The contract period was 12 months and the project was delivered on budget and on schedule. Ausmar reports that the construction was straightforward and the only challenges were working on sand and installing the stone work at heights. The contract period was 12 months.
Ausmar Assist, a business unit of the Ausmar Group, has been developing an accessible housing range called Homes4Life for the past two years and recently built a demonstration home in Sippy Downs. The fully adaptable demonstration home is the first of many designs and includes four bedrooms and a carer’s retreat. The easy living home features means that occupants can live independently. Ausmar identified the building code for accessibility was the minimum, and there is a strong demand for a housing range that is suitable for all ages and abilities. The Homes4Life range was designed to be highly adaptable to assist in keeping people of all abilities in their homes longer with their families and to make them feel safer and more comfortable. While the demonstration home was being built from the recommendations of four focus groups, a design evaluation day was also held to encourage end users to come and have their say.

THE PROJECT: This spacious two storey home is located in a much sought-after position on the Sunshine Coast, backing on to the sand dunes at Warana. The owners’ vision was to have a meticulously finished home to match the beauty of the beach behind, and a contemporary beach facade helps the home settle into the surroundings while giving an impressive street presence. The clients’ first request was size – every room needed to be generous. As soon as you walk through the large entry pivot door, you are greeted by high 2700 millimetre ceilings and an overwhelming feeling of space. The 180 millimetre wide spotted gum timber floors take you through to the main open living area of the home. Large timber bi-fold doors lead to the decked outdoor living area overlooking the pool and native bushland with the Pacific Ocean beyond.

All fixtures and fittings were chosen by the client to suit their sense of style and encapsulate their vision of quality. Stone benchtops throughout add to the luxurious feel. The central stairwell leads you to the upper floor, where you find a large sitting area with balcony for a quiet retreat overlooking the street. The master suite is a retreat in itself, with a well-appointed ensuite featuring full height tiling, freestanding bath and an immense private balcony overlooking the native flora. It’s easy to forget how close to the busy hub of Kawana this home is.
The Ashbury is an impressive two-storey design which welcomes you with a grand entrance way and flowing hallway into the heart of the kitchen and living areas. It’s a small lot home with larger lot inclusions. Upon entering the home, which feels larger than its compact 254m2 footprint, you are greeted by a hand-crafted timber batten screen surrounding the luxurious staircase featuring quality timber treads, edging over a wallpaper-lined feature wall. Ausmar directors Tim Hendy and Tony Bryan
T
im Hendy and Tony Bryan are the directors behind the expanding Ausmar Group. Tim graduated with a Bachelor of Business in 1982 majoring in accounting and business law. His family was directly involved in the building industry and, after serving an apprenticeship in public accounting and becoming a chartered accountant, he quickly realised his passion centred around building projects as well. Having worked in a number of senior accounting and administrative positions for building and development companies, Tim’s experience is put to the test as Ausmar continues to expand. Meanwhile, Tony started as a carpentry
apprentice at the tender age of 16, working under his father Barrie in a family-owned building business. Tony quickly became the state’s youngest registered builder, running his own successful building company and going on to work for several multi-national building corporations in a variety of senior roles. He has a vast level of building and construction experience, including in residential and commercial projects, and maintains a hands-on role in the business. Tony’s other passion is marathons and he has competed in full and half marathons in Australia, New Zealand, Indonesia and Malaysia. He aims to compete in at least one race per month with a healthy mix of shorter races and a few Ironman events per year. Tony trains a minimum of 20 hours per week and a standard week sees him complete at least 12 kilometres of swimming, 300 kilometres of riding and 60 kilometres of running. He is now training for the Australian long course championships, with the goal of qualifying for the world championships in Penticton, Canada in August 2017.

Y
ou can often learn a lot more about a motor company by driving their smallest, most affordable models, rather than their biggest and best. After all, just about anyone can make a
great car if they have the benefit of an inflated $100,000-plus pricetag. But building a good car for a fraction of that price is much more of an achievement. That’s why it’s always fun to test models at the lowest end of the price scale. It’s
usually an instructive and, pretty often, a rewarding exercise. Against that background, driving Kia’s new “baby” suggests the Korean carmaker is in pretty good shape. Called the Picanto, Kia’s new city car is
one of the most affordable models on the Australian market with a pricetag of just $14,990 drive away. The Picanto was added to Kia’s Australian showrooms only this year, even though it’s been available in various forms in other countries for more than a decade. Kia has taken the plunge into the micro-hatch market – taking on rivals like Nissan Micra, Mitsubishi Mirage, Suzuki Alto, Fiat 500, Ford Fiesta and Holden’s new, and apparently very impressive, Barina Spark. Plus, of course, Kia’s Korean platonic twin – the Hyundai i20. That’s despite the fact that this market segment accounts for a modest 700 sales per month – most of them to first-time car owners and the majority of them young females. The lure for Kia in joining this battle is, of course, to attract entry-level buyers to the brand and then keep them there. And, the Picanto is well placed to foster that kind of buyer loyalty. As well as being strong value it’s safe, economical and reasonably stylish. Kia has taken a novel, fuss-free approach to selling the Picanto. In a market packed with choice and options, this car will be offered with one engine choice, one transmission and one non-negotiable price. Buyers will be offered a choice of colours, though.

MOTORING First impressions are positive – the Picanto feels remarkably solid and stable on the road, despite its small wheelbase and modest weight. Just the kind of car, in fact, that you’d be happy for your daughter, or son, to have as their first car. Adding to that appeal is its five-star safety rating, with six airbags, electronic stability control, anti-lock brakes and a vehicle stability management system. Like other Kia models, the Picanto offers a seven-year new car warranty. So a Picanto bought for an 18-year-old is still covered by the factory guarantee when its owner turns 25 – by which time they’ll probably have outgrown this petite little hatch. Kia also offers fixed-price servicing and roadside assist. While most rivals have moved to small-capacity, three-cylinder engines in their micro-machines, Kia uses a 1.25-litre, four-cylinder powerplant. The numbers are modest – just 63 kilowatts and a fairly puny 120Nm of torque. Happily, its thirst is equally modest with an official combined average of just 5.3L/100km. The four-speed auto is competent if a rung or two below class-leading, and it tends to hunt around for gears on occasions. Still it keeps the little engine generally on song. Interestingly, the Picanto isn’t built by
Kia, but under a partnership by Korean compatriot Donghee Auto Company, which previously provided components, including sunroofs and suspension parts, to Kia. The relationship has lasted more than a decade and included the original model Picanto from 2004-2011. This current Kia model, recently refreshed and with upgraded equipment, has been available in other markets for about five years but has only recently debuted Down Under. It delivers the basics in a better-than-
basic way. Interior finishes are a bit hard and plasticky but it has a modern, clean feel. The cloth seats are not plush, but are pleasingly supportive and comfortable. Switchgear is fairly basic, but it boasts electric windows front and rear, airconditioning plus the obligatory Bluetooth connectivity for telephone and music, plus rear parking assist. The cabin is surprisingly roomy inside, and the five-door configuration gives ample access to the rear seats. Cargo space is a fairly cramped 200 litres with the rear seats in use, or 605 litres when they’re folded forward. We particularly liked the Picanto’s uniquely-shaped steering wheel with a clever two-spoke design, and the instrument panel that is bright and easy to read. Downsides? Well, I have to admit I felt a bit self-conscious driving the Picanto, mostly because of the very conspicuous shade of egg-yolk yellow it was painted in.
Kia calls the shade Honey Bee. Why do car companies insist on doing this kind of thing to middle-aged motoring writers? My wife, who teases me about driving these little “butter boxes” at the best of times, could barely contain her mirth. Which, when you think about it, is just another member of the family who enjoyed having the little Picanto around.
KIA PICANTO HOW BIG? It feels reasonably spacious considering the small amount of road that it occupies. At a pinch it will accommodate four full-grown people – preferably the young and nimble variety in the back. Cargo space is acceptable.
HOW FAST? Not very, which is probably a good thing for a car aimed at first-time owners. It gets rolling adequately and will cruise quite comfortably on the highway speed limit. And it feels reassuringly stable at all speeds.
HOW THIRSTY? Its tiny four-cylinder engine has an appropriately small thirst – just 5.3L/100km on a combined city-highway cycle.
HOW MUCH? No haggling here. It’s $14,990 drive away, with no options boxes to tick. The only decision is which colour to buy. I don’t recommend the pale yellow.

REIQ ANNOUNCES FINALISTS FOR AWARDS OF EXCELLENCE The Real Estate Institute of Queensland has announced its 2017 Awards for Excellence finalists and Sunshine Coast agents and agencies feature 15 times in the list. The finalists represent the best in the Queensland real estate profession for the year and this year’s awards attracted a record number of entrants, reflecting the growing strength in the market. Winners will be announced at the gala awards dinner at Brisbane City Hall on February 4, 2017. REIQ CEO Antonia Mercorella says Queensland’s real estate market has shown

LIFE MEMBER INDUCTED INTO MASTER BUILDERS Coolum-based builder Doug Montgomerie has been bestowed a life membership by Master Builders in recognition for his service to the organisation and the building and construction industry. QUEENSLAND HOUSING MARKET STEADY New South Wales has widened its lead over Victoria in the latest HIA Housing Scorecard report, but Queensland has remained steady. The scorecard ranks each of the eight states and territories based on the performance of their housing markets and the Queensland market has remained a strong performer, taking out third place with an unchanged score of 69. New South Wales moved up one rank with a 15-point boost to gain the highest score of 96. HIA senior economist Shane Garrett says this is due to “remarkable performance on the detached house side”. “In this edition of the HIA Housing Scorecard, Queensland grabbed the bronze medal with a solid showing on the multi-unit side,” he says. “Probably the starkest result from the scorecard concerns the volume of First Home Buyer loans, which have fallen well below their long-term average in each state and territory. The obstacles to housing affordability for first-home buyers merit a national-led response.”

Donkey Kong is in the house and the pipeline masters are about to start. Sadly, the swell prediction does not look that hot. You kind of lose interest when it is not near death takeoffs. Looks like lady luck might play a part as opposed to skill. OK, Sunday looks to bring a jump in swell, but has a predicted onshore as its partner. For me, a good friend just dropped around a new 7’6� Michael Peterson glassed-in single fin. Looks sweet, but too good to surf. My first surf board was actually a MP board, which I forgot to tie down on a road trip. Doh.

ESTUARY: Tides this week producing some nice whiting on yabbies along Cotton Tree with oversize flathead on live baits and plastics along the Twin Waters banks near the new boat ramp. There are mud crabs from Bli Bli to Eudlo Creek, with the rain bringing them out of their holes to feed. SURF: Dart and sand whiting along Maroochy north shore using pippies. The exposed rock along Alex Beach returning bream and chopper tailor on baby blue pilchards at dawn and dusk. There are a few tailor at the Maroochy bar. Typically they are here today and gone tomorrow. OFFSHORE: Unexpected good catches of snapper at The Gneerings just on dawn after heavy berleying. The Barwon Banks for pearl perch, snapper and rosy job fish with a few parrot. The best baits for quality fish are pillies and squid with an assortment of plastics – the variety needed to keep them guessing. Water temp around 24 degrees, so the mackerel should be showing up in better numbers FRESHWATER: Bass responding to spinner baits and medium divers in Lake McDonald near Cooroy with the odd Mary River cod for extra entertainment. A few small bass, golden perch and saratoga in Borumba Dam with dawn just perfect. Somerset has good reports of golden perch on a variety of baits and deep diving lures.

inally, the world is coming up O’Leary. A new book has revealed that being messy is actually a good trait. By being messy I don’t mean becoming a tad untidy on the drink, I refer of course to an inability to organise one’s desk, house, or life. Now any number of work colleagues would attest to the latter; my work space often resembles a random collection of political paraphernalia, family mementoes and studies I have never read. If there is a method to my madness I am completely unaware of it. But thankfully I no longer have to come up with excuses for my ‘system’. He’s not saying that you should intentionally be messy, but just that Benjamin Franklin’s axiom “a place for everything, everything in its place”, should not necessarily be taken as gospel. Harford argues that rigid rules are bad because they take away people’s ability to adapt when circumstances change, as they inevitably do in all jobs. He uses the example of a computer algorithm being used to try and solve a complex problem. One way to approach the situation is for the algorithm to adopt a step-by-step approach, making incremental improvements until the entire
riddle is solved. The only catch is this method rarely works because the algorithm gets stuck. So what computer scientists do is provide the algorithm with random shocks so it doesn’t hit a dead-end, and in doing so, increasing exponentially the potential to solve the question. I have seen people who operate like this on a daily basis – naturally messy people, who by definition have more experience dealing with chaos, and therefore find sticky situations easier to handle. Now I’m not saying I’m like this – a little tidy of my desk once in a while would probably do me no harm at all, but Harford’s book does give me hope.
