OUR STORY My Weekly Preview is a high quality magazine delivering more of what matters to the Sunshine Coast. It features news, business, regular columnists, interesting facts ts and figures for that hot topic at the dinner table, motoring, socials, travel, health, lifestyles and more, as well as the most up-to-date information on local real estate. The magazine is 100% locally owned, which means we don’t just talk about being local, we are local, we live it every day. Delivered fresh every Friday. We’re also conscious of the environment at MWP – all our home delivered magazines are wrapped in degradable plastic.

S

ix out of 10 Australians have never interacted with an Aboriginal Australian. How can there be so little contact with a culture that has helped frame this country? As a person raised in rural North Queensland, this figure surprises me. I shared my school classroom with children from all races and backgrounds. We sat side by side, not recognising how the level of melanin in our skin could shape our future lives. We ate lunch together, read together and played handball together – as equals. As I matured, the naïvety of childhood made way for reality. It is this reality that former music exec and reality TV star Ian ‘Dicko’ Dickson unearths in this week’s cover story. Speaking exclusively to My Weekly Preview, Dicko questions assimilation and asks how as a nation we can ignore 40,000 years of heritage and culture? It is a thought-provoking story. Also this week, we chat with councillor Jason O’Pray about a beach matting trial – a terrific initiative improving the lives of many. And, on a festive note, together with Sunshine Coast Council we launch the My Christmas publication. The guide has all the fun, family-friendly activities happening in the region. QUICK CHAT

MEAT-FREE MUSCLE MAN Jay Acharya from Mountain Creek is a champion bodybuilder who was told he’d never make it as a vegetarian. WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY WORKING ON?

Brisbane at the Brisbane Classic this year. Seeing my parents be so supportive and doing them proud is one of my driving forces. This goes for my legend of a coach Leon Stensholm and our team Body By Leon.

One includes a studio for fellow physique/bodybuilding athletes, a healthy and more convenient meal service for athletes and lastly self-development for my upcoming competitions next year, as I will be making my debut as a pro athlete.

CAN YOU NOMINATE A DAY IN YOUR LIFE THAT TURNED OUT TO BE A TURNING POINT?

YOUR FAMILY INCLUDES. . .

The day I decided to step into the world of fitness modelling and acting. That day changed everything and since then I have travelled and gone through so much it really has been a journey and is priceless.

Mum, Dad and all of my legendary friends who support me in everything I do.

DO YOU HAVE A NICKNAME? J, Legionprince.

YOUR GREATEST REGRET?

FIRST CAR?

Not starting what I’m doing now earlier. I have truly been on an amazing journey and the experiences and relationships I have made; I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

Mazda Ms-8.

FAVOURITE BOOKS?

PROUDEST ACHIEVEMENT?

John Marsden’s Tomorrow, When the War Began series.

Again, winning my title as a professional athlete was amazing. I attained the goal I had set a year ago, and a lot of planning, time and effort had gone into this. Seeing your plans come to fruition is an awesome feeling in itself. Secondly, doing this all as a vegetarian. I had always been told that I won’t do well since I don’t eat meat, and that I won’t ever get ahead in the competitive industry sticking to such a diet.

WHAT ARE YOU READING NOW? A variety of self-development and skill development books to further help my business and create a better version of me. IMAGE: TRACY NAUGHTON

FAVOURITE SONG? Lil Wayne – Mirror. Labrinth – Earthquake.

BEST ADVICE YOU’VE BEEN GIVEN? Be productive. Make the most of the time you have. This is something my father always said to me growing up and still does to this day. He would ask me every day what I had done that was productive and contributed to self-development, and improving my skill set for the future.

YOU ARE HAPPIEST WHEN? I’m with family and friends. Training. Achieving goals and hitting targets as planned.

WHAT FRUSTRATES YOU THE MOST?

I moved over to the Sunny Coast in 2007 from New Zealand and have been here ever since. I really do live in paradise.

There are a few places, but Mooloolaba beach is definitely up there on a hot summer’s day.

Lack of discipline and drive. I know and see so many people who have dreams and aspirations, however they cut themselves short and don’t believe they could ever achieve them. Everyone is so much more capable than what they believe.

WHY DO YOU LIVE HERE?

IF YOU COULD CHANGE ONE THING ON THE COAST, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

IF YOU COULD TELL YOUR 18-YEAR-OLD SELF ANYTHING, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

I would add something more to do for the younger people.

Do more. Work harder, get out of your comfort zone and make the plunge into whatever it is that you are wanting to do.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU LIVED ON THE SUNSHINE COAST?

It’s a beautiful place. Amazing beaches, good weather – for the most part, friendly people and still has a lot of nature in the area. I guess what I’m saying is, it isn’t a concrete jungle.

WHERE DO YOU TAKE VISITORS WHEN THEY COME TO THE COAST? Beaches, Sunshine Plaza, Point Cartwright (amazing views).

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE ON THE SUNSHINE COAST?

BEST DAY IN YOUR LIFE?

TEA OR COFFEE?

I have many amazing times, but winning my Pro card and becoming a professional physique athlete was certainly one of my best days and winning the overall title of Mr Physique

COVER STORY

DICKO’S OUTBACK ADVENTURE A REALITY CHECK New Coast local Ian ‘Dicko’ Dickson speaks exclusively to My Weekly Preview about his life-changing month in the outback. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw

I

an ‘Dicko’ Dickson is a household name. You’ve seen him on Australian Idol, Australia’s Got Talent, My Restaurant Rules, Celebrity Survivor: Vanuatu, Dancing with the Stars and The Celebrity Apprentice, but his new show is like nothing he’s done before. The TV and radio personality, who moved to the Sunshine Coast in January, spent the month of June in the Australian outback for series two of the SBS show, First Contact – an experience that has stayed with him. It was the quickest ‘yes’ I’ve ever given to a TV show,” he tells My Weekly Preview. “I absolutely love living in Australia. I’ve been here for 15 years. I’m a proud Australian citizen but I also know this wonderful country, despite its sunny disposition, is hiding a dirty secret. “This continent was forcibly removed from its original owners and the result of that is still being felt now, with first nations people being at the bottom of the pile with nearly every single indicator of success we hold dear – education, health, child mortality rates, suicide rates, education, housing, employment opportunities, incarceration rates. It’s a bewildering litany of inequality and something we have to fix.” Series one of the show aired on SBS in 2014 and won the 2015 Logie Award for Most Outstanding Factual Program. The series attracted national attention for its treatment of contemporary Australian attitudes towards Indigenous Australians. Series two will feature six celebrities, including Dickson. “I got asked to do the celebrity version – for want of a better word. Six well-known Australians going to hang out with blackfellas,” says Dickson. “Six out of 10 Australians have never had any contact with Aboriginal Australians, which is kind of startling in itself. I know they’re only two per cent of our population, but it’s such a huge heritage we share. “The first step for me was the realisation I knew next to nothing about Aboriginal culture. I’m a bleeding heart leftie, but like most Australians, it’s like I filed it into the too-hard basket. It seems a bewildering task – where to start, what to do? I think if I’m honest, most suburban Australians I speak to would rather this just went away. “For me it was a recognition that something’s got to be done and this month away for me, I knew it wasn’t presenting me with any answers. What I hoped I would get was a couple of better questions.”

Dickson was so moved by the experience he came back to his home in Maleny and devoured 20 books on Aboriginal culture. “I realised how ignorant I was,” he says. “I had no clue about what had happened. It was clear to me the Indigenous story had been written out of Australian history between Federation and the 1960s. That was the thing that affected me. “It would be like me going back to England and telling people prior to 1788 all history was going to be wiped. No Romans, no Middle Ages, no English Civil War, no Queen Elizabeth, no Spanish Armada. That seemed to me like it would cause an uprising, yet that’s exactly what we expect of our First Nations to do. Forget about 40,000 years of heritage and culture. We just say, ditch that, you’re better off with us. What a terrible waste. As Australians, why can’t we have a shared heritage? How fantastic to live in a culture that goes back that far – we shouldn’t be sweeping this under the carpet.” In person, Dicko is not the tough-talking ‘nasty’ judge Australia got to know – and in many cases, dislike – on the first series of Australian Idol in 2003. He still has that no BS edge, but he comes across as a warm, sincere man who thinks more deeply than many Australian viewers might give him credit for. Some of the people he connected with while filming First Contact, he’ll never forget. “One of the most important moments on this show happened in a place in the Northern Territory called Elliott,” he says. “I met a woman who was living in a tiny house with 25 people. It was a shocking state of affairs. She was doing her best – she got eight kids washed and fed and off to school every day. She said to me, ‘Dicko, when are white Australians going to stop measuring us by their standards? They want us to be a 10, but we’re a one. The best we can do is try to be a two. When we’ve done two, we’ll have a crack at three. She described a pragmatic approach for elevating the status of her family and loved ones. It was devastating that even she acknowledged the dream is beyond her lifetime. “The thing that struck me was the amount of death – and young death – in every community. Some places I went to, it was almost like an epidemic. If that was white kids in a white community, there would be a Royal Commission. It’s this absolute avalanche of death that affects every one of these communities and I have no idea how they get through it. Actually, I don’t think they do get

DICKO ON MOVING TO THE SUNSHINE COAST As a record company executive in the UK and Australia, Ian ‘Dicko’ Dickson has lived a glamorous life and worked with many high-profile artists including George Michael, Celine Dion, Ozzy Osbourne, Primal Scream, Jamiroquai and Pearl Jam. He fell into a successful TV and radio career when he arrived in Australia and has walked many a red carpet. But in January this year, he waved goodbye to the bright lights and moved to Maleny with his wife Mel. “About 10 years ago, Mel went to a yoga retreat in Maleny and came back to Sydney and said, ‘we’ve found the most beautiful place in Australia and we’re going to live there one day’. I said, dream on, whatever. In August last year we came up to the Coast and were staying in Noosa. We came up to the Range for a few days and three days later, we’d bought a house. We went back to Sydney and thought, shit, what have we done? “I’m thrilled, I love it. I go down to Sydney now and everyone is so filled with their own self-importance. It’s the best move we ever made.” One week a month, Dicko flies to Sydney for work commitments, including his role as ambassador for the Western Sydney Wanderers. He’s no stranger to flying – during his stint on Fox Network’s The Next Great American Band in 2007, he commuted between Sydney and LA every week. But he’s always happy to land back in Maroochydore and head up the hill to Maleny, where he says he feels more creative, particularly with writing. “It’s good to be able to live between the two but it’s beautiful up here,” he says. “Once you’ve found paradise, stop looking. “I just love it the way it is, I hope there’s not too many more subdivisions around Maleny. I have places I stop and just gawk at the scenery and I can’t believe how beautiful it is at certain

times of the day.” After a long hiatus, Dickson has started managing a band again, a group of “local lads from Caloundra” he declines to name. “I’m very excited to be working with them, we’ve got a whole bunch of stuff we’re doing. I never thought I’d get back into music again. It just felt right and the Sunshine Coast has such a vibrant music scene – everything from Peregian Originals, the Caloundra Festival, the Woodford Festival and what goes on around Maleny. “Music finds a way out. People who are into music can only do music, that’s what they do, whether it’s busking out the front of IGA in Maleny or hanging out at Crystal Waters on a Friday night playing guitar.” Dickson’s favourite hangouts include Maleny’s Shotgun Espresso, where he’s often spotted sitting at an outside table having coffee with friends, and the Spicers Tamarind and Spicers Clovelly restaurants, which he says friends in Sydney rave about. He and Mel are regulars at Maleny’s Outspoken literary talks and he gives a special mention to Maleny musicians Linsey Pollak and Rob Longstaff. “I’ve got one of Rob Longstaff’s posters in my dunny from one of his gigs at the old Upfront Club. It’s great you can wander into town and see someone like Rob playing – he’s very talented. “We went to the launch of the Macedonian film organised by Linsey Pollak and afterwards the Unusual Suspects played. That’s fantastic. We would never have done that stuff in Sydney. It would have been on the other side of town. When that stuff happens in Maleny, you feel welcome. It has been a real shot in the arm for our social life.”

FILL A SHOE BOX THANK YOU BRUNCH WILL HONOUR VOLUNTEERS The Sunshine Coast’s hundreds of volunteers will be recognised next month when Sunshine Coast Council hosts a thank you brunch at Lake Kawana Community Centre. The event coincides with International Volunteer Day on December 5. “Each year hundreds of volunteers enrich life on the Coast by supporting a diverse range of community organisations and Council community programs and services,’’ mayor Mark Jamieson says. “Events, programs, community organisations, disaster and emergency efforts are just some of the areas of service that depend on the freely given time, skill and passion of volunteers.”

The Rotary Club of Kunda Park is seeking support from the wider community for its school shoe box project. The club has teamed up with students from Kuluin State School, who have spent the past month collecting school items such as pens, books and rulers, which will be placed into boxes and shipped to less fortunate Papua New Guinea. The shoe boxes will be collected from the school on November 30. To find out more about the Kunda Park club phone Caroline on 0422 438 876.

Stockland and Code Club Australia are teaming up for the inaugural Young Innovators’ Day to educate children on the importance of science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM). Seventy-five per cent of the fastest growing occupations require STEM-related skills and knowledge. The free December 10 event, hosted by tech entrepreneur Lili Scout at USC, will feature interactive activities and an introduction to new technologies including robotics, virtual reality, coding workshops, gaming and 3D printing. The day is for children aged eight to 15. Visit eventbrite.com.au and search for Young Innovators’ Day.

KIDS INVITED TO JOIN READING CHALLENGE Throughout December and January, you can decide whether you want to be a hero or a villain through the annual Summer Reading Club at your local Sunshine Coast Council library. The Australian Summer Reading Club is an annual program that encourages reading among children and young people. To join the fun, children need to read five books of their choice over the summer holidays. Then they complete the reading log and hand it in to their local library by January 16. “This Summer’s Club is packed full of adventurous things – everything about super powers, dastardly villains and flying heroes,” says councillor Jenny McKay.

Gifts have been exchanged to recognise a relationship between the Sunshine Coast and Tatebayashi City in Japan spanning two decades. Our region’s gift is an installation of 20 patinated copper leaf forms, one to mark each year of the Sister Cities’ relationship, riveted onto rusted steel rods using copper rivets from Tatebayashi. The work is titled Bending 5. The installation can be arranged to suit the space and place. Councillor Jenny McKay presented the gift to a Tatebayashi City delegation at the Caloundra council chambers on Tuesday.

NEW $2.98M BRIDGE Construction of a new $2.98 million dedicated pedestrian and cycle bridge across Eudlo Creek on David Low Way at Maroochydore started this week. The Queensland Government contributed $2.24 million towards the project. The new three-metre-wide bridge will be built north of the existing road bridge, separating motorists from pedestrians and cyclists and improve cyclist connectivity to the Maroochydore foreshore and the Maroochydore town centre.

BIG LAUNCH FOR CLEANTECH START-UP Sunshine Coast Innovation Centre start-up graduate Enopte has launched its new smart renewable battery system to compete on the world stage. The floor stackable power block lithium battery system plugs into the existing power supply to monitor and store enough energy to essentially take a property off the grid. Enopte is part of the region’s growing clean technologies sector and is identified as offering some of the best opportunities for future growth. “Their new product was fully developed here on the Sunshine Coast from design concept to software creation,” councillor Steve Robinson says. “The system plugs into the existing power supply in homes or businesses to provide more options for everyone to reduce their energy usage without even thinking about it.” Pictured: Cr Steve Robinson and Enopte CEO Mark Leckenby

MY LIFE

Is stress overwhelming? Feel anxious all the time? Low for no reason?

TOP 5 ESSENTIAL OILS FOR SENSITIVE SKIN

Anti-Depressants are not the only treatment option available Are you losing the ability to tolerate stress? Do you feel anxious more often, at times even for no reason? Do you feel sad and low, even though there are lots of things in life to be happy about? This is unfortunately an all too common scenario; symptoms can be obvious such as overreacting, feelings of depression, pessimism, no longer feeling joyful, difficulty sleeping, low energy. Other symptoms may seem less obvious like a foggy head, difficulty recalling names and events, inability to wind down, low libido, night sweats, weight gain or loss.

James Colquhoun from Food Matters says essential oils are nature’s remedy for all manner of skin problems.

H

ollywood movies would have us believe that the average woman has a flawless visage. Perhaps it’s time for a reality check? Sensitive skin impacts millions of people, whether its rosacea, acne, contact dermatitis, persistent burning and stinging sensations, psoriasis, excessive dryness or flakiness, ongoing redness or eczema. So, how can essential oils help your skin? When you think of the word ‘chemical’, does your mind automatically flip to visions of test tubes and chemistry labs? In one sense, you’d be absolutely right. Many chemicals are synthetic and unnatural. On the other hand, there are millions of chemicals that naturally occur in nature. Natural chemicals can also offer therapeutic actions. Here are five essential oils that contain potent natural chemicals to help heal and calm your skin. Roman chamomile – a lovely light, floral essential oil that is effective at treating irritated, itchy skin or rashes. Geranium – offers the balancing benefits

of both calming inflammation and stimulating new skin growth. Furthermore, geranium can help to regulate sebum production, which is helpful for both oily and dry skin conditions. Juniper – Another beautiful, soothing essential oil that offers anti-inflammatory action. Famed for helping with eczema and psoriasis, juniper will clear up itchy, patchy skin in a flash. Sandalwood – This rich, aromatic, essential oil is effective for nourishing dry skin and can assist with some rashes. Sandalwood also protects the skin against impurities, pollution and unwanted microbes. Rose – Commonly touted as the gold star for dry skin, it is also useful for young skin. It offers strong antibacterial action to help fight acne. Rose oil can lower inflammation and may even help with eczema.

As many as 40% of people who take antidepressants have minimal improvements in their symptoms. It’s important to know there are other more effective methods of treatment, once the cause has been identified correctly. Bacterial infections are a common trigger, picked up any number of ways from a bout of gastroenteritis, overseas travel or simply living with someone who has the infection. What we eat plays a major role in how we feel, with food sensitivities developing over time, compounding the severity of anxiety or depression. Stress is another factor people suffer on a regular basis, which can worsen symptoms rapidly as it depletes our nutrients and hormones. Being deficient in any one nutrient or low in hormones can be catastrophic when health is already compromised. Fortunately, treatment is simple, with most symptoms relieved following specific identification of infection along with addressing food triggers through comprehensive and specialised DNA testing. Once nutrient status is restored, together with thorough genetic testing to uncover any predispositions, the future looks bright again and mechanisms for coping and feeling joyful are returned. It’s vital that the correct measures are taken when treating depression or anxiety. No matter how chronic, there will always be an underlying cause which can be resolved with the right testing and approach. If you would like to know more, call (07) 5443 1987 and arrange a free half hour consultation with one of our trained integrated practitioners, or view the webinar “7 Steps to Freedom from Anxiety & Depression” at www.advancedwellness.com.au

SCREEN QUEEN BACKS COAST FILM INDUSTRY Screen Queensland CEO Tracey Vieira is excited about the Coast’s potential to be the home of independent cinema in Queensland. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw

W

hen Screen Queensland CEO Tracey Vieira was named the 2016 Telstra Queensland Business Woman of the Year, it wasn’t just a win for Queensland, it was a win for the Sunshine Coast. Vieira, whose advocacy for film has led to an estimated $1.5 billion worth of investment in Australia’s film industry, is a member of the Sunshine Coast Council’s Arts Advisory Board and is actively promoting our local film industry. The Board is developing a 20-year plan targeting our region’s cultural future and as part of that, Vieira’s role is to help build the identity of the Coast as an arts destination for tourism and industry. “The Sunshine Coast has been very clear with us that there’s an industry there that needs support and nurturing and I’ve been coming up at least once a month to meet with the Sunshine Coast Council,” she says. “I’ve looked at Heliport Studios at Buderim, which is owned by Allan and Barbara Pease. It’s an incredible world-class sound recording studio, but you wouldn’t even know it was there. It could be used for incredible work in film and TV but its under-utilised because there’s no awareness it’s there. “We also have a location team that has spent time on the Coast getting photos of different locations to make sure we are pitching the Sunshine Coast for any opportunities that come up. We’ve been taking photos of a whole range of things, from facilities to actual potential locations where you could set up a production office. We have an online library that we use and producers use to pitch against a script, so we’re doing photos to make sure we really sell the Sunshine Coast.” Vieira says one of the key priorities for the Coast’s screen industry is to have its own identity. “There’s no reason for it to look like the Gold Coast,” she says. “The Sunshine Coast has the opportunity to be the home of independent cinema in our state. We’re looking at how we build a crew base there, how we bring people together to collaborate, what sort of infrastructure is needed.” Vieira is teaming up with local talent like Livia Hanich, a producer and editor who has been based in Los Angeles for 25 years and recently moved to the Coast. Hanich has worked on primetime scripted programming for Paramount, Warner Bros, Fox, Sony, Universal and HBO. “She’s done some incredible television,” says Vieira. “She’s a person with world-class skills.” Vieira is also working with Sunshine Coast author Sue McPherson, whose novel Grace Beside Me is being made into children’s television series.

Above: Screen Queensland CEO Tracey Vieira with George Clooney and Keith Urban

“She’s an Indigenous woman with a beautiful Indigenous story. I think she’s a real up and coming talent from Eumundi.” Vieira says she’s always had a love of film and television and began her career working for the Queensland Events Corporation, securing international events for Queensland. That led to a job seeking international productions for Queensland, which progressed to a role with Oz Film where she was based in Los Angeles for 10 years. “My job was to get international development money for Australian productions,” she says. “I loved that job so much. It was about building relationships and selling how creatively Australia can work and the talent that’s here.” During her decade in LA, Vieira worked with major film studios, met her husband and gave birth to her son. She mixed with A-list celebrities like Nicole Kidman, Cate Blanchett and Geoffrey Rush and had Robert de Niro and Al Pacino over to her house. Sons of Anarchy was filmed in her house, an exciting experience for such a die-hard film and TV lover. “LA has a big place in my heart,” she says. “I lived in a wonderful community. “The one thing that really sticks with you with Australian

actors is they’ve usually made their Aussie community in the US and are really supportive of each other. Anthony LaPaglia has been opening doors for Australian directors trying to get a break in the US and Heath Ledger was really famous for opening his doors to Australian actors trying to get a break.” Vieira joined Screen Queensland in 2014 and wasted no time shaking things up. “One of the things that was really appealing to me was having been in Queensland, then gone overseas for 10 years, I was able to come back and see not a lot had changed in terms of people’s careers and opportunities. Screen Queensland had made headlines like: ‘Lights, Camera, Inaction’. There was a real opportunity coming in here to rebuild relationships with the industry and really look at the culture of Screen Queensland, how we operate, what we needed to do to get better outcomes.” In July, Queensland Premier and Arts Minister Annastacia Palaszczuk announced an additional $30 million for Screen Queensland over the next four years to lure new screen productions and develop world-class screen content. “We’re the best funded we’ve ever been,” says Vieira. “At the moment we’re supporting 30 film festivals across the state.” Two of those are the Caloundra Film Festival and the Noosa Film Festival. “I think it’s really important that people can engage with screen content you can see outside a cinema complex,” she says. “Australian stories you don’t get to see alongside a blockbuster. If you miss the one weekend it’s on at the cinema, you don’t get to see the film. Film festivals bring us stories about us, stories that are culturally really significant for us as Australians.”

TRAVEL

Two camels rests near the Al-Khazneh Treasury carved into the rock at Petra, Jordan. Petra is one the new Seven Wonders of the World

The Siq is the main entrance to Petra

A WHOLE NEW WORLD Time comes to a standstill in Jordan’s rose-red city of Petra.

P

etra was immortalised by poet John William Burgon as the “rose-red city half as old as time”. But the morning I visit this southern Jordan town, which dates back to around 300BC, time has come to a standstill. Lying in their shops set among the colourful cliffs, Bedouin women look bored. “Please come look,” they beg in English. “Every day no business.” I was expecting to be squished into the sprawling site with a million other tourists. But at 7.30am, hardly anyone but the Bedouins who work there are around. Still, the city unknown to the West until

the 1800s is nothing like I’ve ever seen. Petra, with its unique buildings carved out of red, white and orange stone, was declared one of the new Seven Wonders of the World in 2007. And as the numbers start picking up by mid-morning, I see more visitors pass through the site’s dramatic entry. The Siq, a 1.2 kilometre gorge between towering cliffs, is the only way in and out of the city. Horse carriages driven by Bedouin men send loud echoes of “clip clop” off the rock faces. And then, seemingly out of nowhere, Petra’s most famous building emerges. The Treasury is intricately designed and

remarkably preserved. Here you meet eyeliner-wearing men, who try to sell you a ride on their camel. You should also be prepared for their flirting. Many a western woman, including a New Zealand-born nurse who still lives with the Bedouin, have found love in Petra. “I love your smile,” a young bandanawearing man says to an Australian woman trying to photograph camels. Though the Treasury is the most visited site in Petra, it’s just the tip of the iceberg. Days could be spent in the city. Ignore your burning legs and follow a sign promising the “best view in Jordan” up another hill. It’s only then you can fully appreciate the size of the building set against the valley beyond. I feel pleased with myself as I start to make my way back down the stairs.

Back on the street, more women plead with me to look at their shops. Over a cup of tea, one lady tells me business has been bad since the conflict broke out in Syria, to Jordan’s north. It’s a shame to think many thousands of people might miss out on seeing Jordan’s biggest draw card because of neighbouring conflicts. I reflect on Burgon’s awed closing line: “Match me such marvel save in Eastern clime, a rose-red city half as old as time”. The writer was a guest of Movenpick, Qantas, Emirates and Visit Jordan.

IF YOU GO: GETTING THERE Qantas flies through Dubai in partnership with Emirates. Their sale fares in November start from $773 one way. STAYING THERE The five-star Movenpick Petra resort (movenpick.com/Jordan/Petra) is beside the entry to the site. PLAYING THERE One-day entry to Petra is about $90 for people who have spent at least a night in the country. Two days is about $100 and three days is about $110. It will cost you about $165 for a one-day pass if you’re not going to spend a night in Jordan. Visit http://visitpetra.jo

PARKLAKES PROMOTION

EXCITING TIMES AHEAD FOR BLI BLI AND PARKLAKES 2 Bli Bli represents a symbol of the Sunshine Coast’s recovery with the multimillion- dollar infrastructure and urban development investment transforming the area from an isolated sleepy village to one of the most popular residential communities on the Sunshine Coast. Living in Bli Bli means that you are central to all the action and still surrounded by natural beauty. The idyllic masterplanned residential community Parklakes 2 in the heart of Bli Bli is delivering unparalleled lifestyle in keeping with the developers’ original vision of bringing generations together. Inside this community is a future Prep to Year 12 Catholic school to open in January 2019 and the over 50s Luxury Lifestyle Community Halcyon Lakeside with a full suite of 5-star resort facilities. With the beautiful views of Mt Coolum, canopies of trees, lakes and the central park with waterfront café/tapas bar and lots of open space; you truly are surrounded by natural beauty and modern convenience at Parklakes 2. Bli Bli Shopping Precinct is only minutes away and is currently being extended to

include a medical centre, gym, tavern and hotel. “The Bli Bli Village Centre will give the community a retail heart and a shopping and commercial sector that local residents could only dream about. Bli Bli is a community which has delivered on its promises, and is evolving to be one of the most in demand communities on the Sunshine Coast thanks to its local infrastructure as well as easy access to local beaches, the airport and new CBD,” says Michael White, owner of White’s Supa IGA. There is a real confidence in the Sunshine Coast market and the solid demand for land at Parklakes 2 seen in the past year highlights that more and more people want to build their own home instead of renting. “We are finding that our buyers have done their research and even before they come to see us many have already decided to build at Parklakes 2, it’s a lifestyle choice for most people. They want to enjoy the outdoors at their doorstep and many buyers are building their second or third home and don’t want to compromise on space or privacy,” developer Robert Flipp says.

“After more than 30 years in property development we have never experienced this level of continued activity and it’s evident that Bli Bli now is a vibrant community well sought after.” The final stages are now selling at Parklakes 2 and with an average lot size of 640m2 there is room for ample parking, a pool, shed and a large outdoor entertaining area. MY OPINION

EXTREME LEGO STORAGE IDEAS

A LOT OF GIVE AND TAKE

Sami Muirhead goes to great lengths to find the answer to one of life’s greatest mysteries – what is the best way to store Lego?

Rebecca Grisman says the Coast’s deeper beauty lies in the generosity and kindness we show towards those in need.

L

ego is what we parents buy our kids in the hope the block building is feeding their little minds and honing their motor skills. It is also lots of fun to be a kid again and build stuff with your child. It brings mindfulness and simple happiness to actually make something. So in a perfect world, it is the gift that keeps on giving. Except when Lego goes rogue. And it always goes rogue. The little pieces in that one box inevitably get split up. Bits get lost. Pieces become weapons under your feet, crippling you in the middle of the night. Keeping an entire set in its box and all together is about as easy as running a marathon in flippers. I lie awake at night thinking about cheesecake and how I should be storing our pesky pieces. I know. I am completely tragic. We started off with great intentions and planned to keep each unit with its box or within a bag but I left the kids alone with the Lego for 10 minutes and the pieces were scattered across the house and I have found them in the washing machine and even in the pool. So I have started a new obsession with friends: asking them how they store their Lego. It seems colour coding is huge. Other friends tell me placing each set or colour in

zip lock bags is a failsafe option. Many use huge sliding draws, a few implement plastic jars, and one perfectionist custom-built a table with storage bins hanging off the side. Upcycling old fishing tackle boxes is a genius idea and one family just throws it all on a sheet and rolls the whole damn thing up. One mum I know has a binder where the instructions to each piece are hole punched, laminated, and popped into the folder. Wait for it. In alphabetical order. The rest of us do not stand a chance. So in the pursuit of perfect and practical Lego storing, I went as far as tracking down the only Lego professor in the Southern Hemisphere. Ryan ‘Brickman’ McNaught. Ryan is an Aussie who is living the dream job of many kids: he is paid to build Lego. The dad is the curator of the new global exhibition called Wonders Of The World. The Lego display will travel the nation and then the globe, but first it is premiering at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre. It took 5000 hours to build the epic structures and I think storing the pieces would have been the last thing on Ryan’s mind. More than 50 amazing models will be on display including a giant Lego Arc de Triomphe and Empire State Building. Ryan answered my question wisely: “The correct way to store Lego is the way Mum tells you to store it.” A smart Lego professor indeed.

“Ryan is an Aussie who is living the dream job of many kids…”

T

he Sunshine Coast region is often noted and celebrated as an extremely generous community for its widespread support for myriad causes and charities. Some simple online research this week provided me with lists of more than 200 registered charities across several categories. That did not include schools, churches or volunteer led organisations that are not officially registered as deductible gift recipients (DGRs) with the Australian Taxation Office. It also doesn’t account for the range of invaluable voluntary groups like Rotary, Lions and U3A, to name just a few, who give their time and skills to creating and supporting activities for charitable purposes. It adds up to a lot of good community work being done by many. Much of it is unseen, day to day, yet the ripple effects can impact many lives and even generations of local people. Social media in some ways makes it easier to share and shine a light on the many big hearts and willing hands that we are so fortunate to have in our local neighbourhoods. Although there are many, many causes out there seeking some attention and support it can be an easy way to share a moment, a photo, a memory and a need. In the past few weeks I’ve been moved to tears and to donate time, money, food, books and gifts for several local causes. Just some of them included supporting the

annual Day for Daniel, which means a lot to our region; primary students fundraising for rebuilding a sister school in Fiji destroyed by Cyclone Winston in February; Ken Mills Toyota’s innovative pop-up restaurant in their car servicing shed to support 5000 at risk children on the Coast via SunnyKids; and buying homewares for the Pathways College that’s under construction in Caloundra by STEPS.

“I’ve been moved to tears and to donate time, money, food…” My favourite cause lately, however, has been gathering 35 gifts for little ones and their committed teen mums who are completing high school through the STEMM program at Burnside State High School. As Christmas draws closer there will certainly be many more appeals and causes to come that anyone of any age can become involved in. My small son is already saving up for choosing several injured and rescued native wildlife to sponsor as gifts for his friends and cousins this year. It is the diverse tapestry of our Coast’s communities and organisations that makes up the fabric of our regional character and this time of year brings out many stories and also many hands to make things happen.

GAME CHANGER UPDATE

FROM THE MAYOR

WHAT’S ON TOP 3

1 One of the very pleasant duties our councillors get to enjoy at this time of year is attending the various graduation and speech nights held by our local schools. We are very fortunate to have so many outstanding educational facilities in our region and our visits to meet the students and staff always provide some memorable moments. Since graduation night season started in late October, I’ve enjoyed being a guest at Chancellor State College, Caloundra State High School, Nambour Christian College, St John’s College Nambour and Suncoast Christian College – with more to come. What has stood out at each school is that we have hundreds of very intelligent and engaged students heading into further education and the workforce. They have their sights firmly on the future and can see the pathways we are developing here on the Coast for their future careers. Another standout feature is the great cohesion that exists between the students and the dedicated teaching and administration staff. It’s all helping to build capable, confident young people who will do their families and our region proud. Best of luck! Mark Jamieson Mayor Sunshine Coast Council

IT’S GO TIME FOR AIRPORT Our Sunshine Coast Airport expansion plans are about to take off. With the major project approvals already in place and access to a $181 million loan from the Federal Government now confirmed, council is able to go ahead with the construction of the new runway, apron expansion and related infrastructure. It’s expected the new airport will be ready for passengers and freight by Christmas 2020. The expansion project will contribute $4.1 billion to the Sunshine Coast economy between 2020 and 2040 and result in 3500 fewer dwellings being affected by noise by 2020. It will ensure we have an airport that can accommodate larger, more fuel efficient aircraft, enabling more direct flights to more locations in Australia, Asia and the Western Pacific. Those new routes will boost our tourism and international trade and help our export businesses.

METERS TO SWITCH OFF Shoppers will be able to take advantage of meter free parking in the Caloundra CBD during the Christmas and New Year period. It will run for six weeks starting from Saturday, December 10 to Sunday, January 29. The two-hour time limit will still apply in order to support customer turnover for local businesses.

MAKEOVER FOR STADIUM Sunshine Coast Stadium, our region’s premier outdoor sports and events facility, will have its capacity boosted to around 10,000 thanks to a $2.5 million project now underway. The upgrade includes family friendly turf hills along the eastern, northern and southern sides which will provide great views of the playing field and a 36 square metre LED scoreboard/replay screen.

VULNERABLE HABITAT SAFE AND SECURE An incredible 27.5 hectare eucalypt and rainforest habitat in the foothills of Buderim will be protected and enhanced for many future generations to come thanks to your annual Environment Levy contribution. Council’s latest Environment Levy Land Acquisition Program purchase at 62-124 Crosby Hill Road, is one of the largest remaining vegetated lots in the Buderim area. It’s home to tall habitat trees along with a number of the Coast’s protected plant and animal species, including the biggest owl in Australia – the powerful owl. The $1.25 million property is a significant addition to council’s conservation estate and increases the amount of land purchased through the Environment Levy to more than 2860 hectares since the early 1990s. Just over one third (1052 hectares) has been acquired since 2008. We have already identified numerous important and vulnerable plant and wildlife species on the site and our council officers are excited to undertake further assessments to find out what else is sheltered in the fully vegetated, diverse

THE PLANNING FOR A SUSTAINABLE COASTAL VILLAGE Sekisui House invites the community to visit us for information and have your say.

Sekisui House Australia is preparing a new proposal for the development of a 5 Star international eco-tourism resort, conference facilities, apartments, terraces and single dwelling homes around a coastal village centre and public open spaces on our 19 hectare beachfront site at Yaroomba. This will be a new plan to create a sustainable coastal village based on principles developed in partnership with the community. We listened to community feedback about our previous proposal and will be making reductions in the hotel height and in the size of the residential community. Sekisui House is Japan’s most respected and successful community builders, with an international reputation for creating environmentally thoughtful and high quality developments that integrate with the natural environment. These same values, and our respect for the Sunshine Coast’s natural beauty and sustainability, will be paramount in our planning for Yaroomba Beach. The new proposal being developed will offer a medium-density and medium-rise development. It will be a venue for locals and a drawcard for tourists, setting a new benchmark for the Sunshine Coast. Sekisui House has signed an agreement with Starwood Hotels to operate The Westin Coolum Resort & Spa at Yaroomba Beach, and Starwood will bring its

international tourism experience to the process of planning for the first 5 Star hotel on the Sunshine Coast in nearly 30 years. The Yaroomba Beach site is a disused former golf course and is recognised as one of only two key, undeveloped Tourism Focus Areas on the Sunshine Coast – specifically set aside as primary locations for tourism related activities, facilities and infrastructure. Establishing a 5 Star eco-tourism resort will generate hundreds of local jobs and inject millions of tourism dollars into local businesses every year. Importantly the 5 Star ecotourism resort will be developed in the 1st stage. The important parabolic and frontal dunes that adjoin the site are not owned by Sekisui House, not included in the project and will not be developed. Sekisui House is targeting world class sustainability outcomes for the site, maintaining some of the mature vegetation and reducing the amount of imported fill under the new framework. Sekisui House is highly awarded for sustainable development in Australia and overseas and these values will be applied to the Yaroomba Beach project.

BEACH MATS A BIG HIT

V

isiting the beach is something many people take for granted. But for some of the Sunshine Coast residents who are looking forward to a day out at Maroochy Beach tomorrow, it has been a once in a lifetime opportunity – until now. Hundreds of people are expected to turn out to witness the second beach matting trial, which gives people living in a wheelchair the chance to feel the ocean. The first trial, held at Alexandra Headland earlier this month, was hailed a success and Sunshine Coast councillor Jason O’Pray has no doubts this weekend’s event will be just as rewarding. O’Pray committed $2500 towards the cost of the matting while not-for-profit organisation 121 Care kicked in $1500. “We had about 40 people living in chairs at that trial,’’ he tells My Weekly Preview. “It was not only one of my greatest days at work but one of the greatest days of my life in general. “There was a four-year-old boy squealing because he had never been on the beach. “It’s something we all take so much for granted, it’s such a powerful thing.’’ Saturday morning’s trial is in conjunction with the Disabled Surfers

WHICH SHARES HOLD THE TRUMP CARDS? Anthony Ward is from Ord Minnett in Buderim.

W

hat a confusing world we live in. Post the Trump victory, let’s look at how we see the state of play in domestic equity markets. As we have outlined before, we felt the ASX200 would largely remain range bound in the near term, between 4900–5400, with the upside being limited by persistent risks around growth, not just globally, but also domestically. We wouldn’t be surprised to see markets continue to trade within this range. Following Trump’s victory, we think a rally above the top end of our target near term is even more difficult given the uncertainty around policy direction and

implications for markets outside the US. However, we are comfortable for the time being that the market’s downside can be limited to around 4900, as policy on balance remains accommodative (and rate cuts even become a possibility again in several countries, including Australia), while valuations would be more attractive, as price-earnings multiples move back to longer term averages and dividend-bond yield gaps widen again. For the Australian share market, early beneficiaries of a Trump win would be companies leveraged to the defence sector (e.g. Austal), rising US rates (e.g. QBE Insurance), and the US economy in general (e.g. Orora, Westfield). Of these, we are fundamentally more positive on names like Austal, Orora and Westfield. More broadly, given our view of a range bound market, one does have to remain selective, and we are comfortable with the themes we have been advocating for within our equity market. Yield Plus: companies with more moderate yield and which are growing

“Post the Trump victory, let’s look at how we see the state of play…” earnings and therefore can grow dividends over time (e.g. AGL, Duet, Perpetual, Westfield, Goodman Group). Leverage to a declining AUD/USD: if anything, rising bond yields in the US will

see the gap between rates in Australia and the US close further, providing more relative support for the US dollar against the AUD. The key ways to play a rising USD (relatively to the AUD) would be a US dollar exchange traded fund (e.g. USD.AXW) or ASX listed companies with more exposure the USD (e.g. Orora, Treasury Wine). Structural growth stories or cycle defenders: that is, companies that are leveraged to structural trends such as the ageing population, or who are less dependent on the Australian economic cycle, given our concerns on the Australian economy. These include companies like Service Stream, Healthscope, and Ramsay Health Care.

plans and schedules provided to you earlier, as well as provisions specifying a sunset date by which the development must be completed. The contract should also include a provision requiring the developer to rectify any defects that may become evident during the first few months after you settle. Experienced lawyers will ensure that important matters are properly covered. In summary: • Do your research and get a clear picture of how it will all fit together • Beware of rental guarantees • Get the contract reviewed by a lawyer. There is obviously a lot more involved in off the plan property transactions so if you have any questions contact your lawyer. uying off the plan, although often a great way to get started with property or build an investment portfolio, can also be filled with many traps for inexperienced or ill-informed investors. Entering into a contract to buy an apartment or townhouse before construction has finished is known as buying off the plan. It’s a good idea to research the developer and the location and try to get as clear a picture as possible of the dwelling you will actually receive. Study all plans, drawings and schedules of finishes and even ask an architect for an opinion about them. Get a good understanding of how the body corporate will be structured and how much you can expect to pay each year. Beware of rental guarantees as they can give you a false impression about the return you can expect to receive. The proposed contract of sale and associated disclosure statement from the developer should include copies of the

ll business owners can relate to the hard work and commitment it takes to shape an organisation into a success. But, what would happen to your business if you, one of your partners or a key employee were no longer able to work? How would the business pay its share of any debts or working capital? Would the business continue to run profitably? Would there be any business partners or their spouses who would want their share of the business to be sold? These are all great questions to consider. When I speak to business owners about insurance there are three core protection needs that we address. These include:

ASSET PROTECTION This provides cover for capital purpose debt in the event of the death or disability of a business principal or key person.

Discover how changes to the Age Pension could impact your retirement income For a free confidential appointment to see how you will be effected by the changes, contact us on 5476 5117. Retirement is a time to enjoy all the hard work you’ve put in over the years. Ensuring your finances are in order enables you to have peace of mind so that you can focus on doing the things you enjoy most. • Find out how the Federal Budget changes are going to impact seniors. If you are on the part or full Age Pension you will find how these upcoming changes will affect you and what strategies are available to you to maximise your retirement income.

OWNERSHIP PROTECTION This type of cover provides funding for business succession in the event of the death or disability of a business principal. If you do not currently have a solution to any of the above circumstances, please contact MLC Advice Buderim on 5476 5117 to arrange a complimentary discussion about your business needs.

read recently that Stephen Hawking has suggested with the way the planet’s going, we only have about 700 years to find a new place for us all to live. That’s nowhere near enough time for my wife to pack. If the world was seriously going to end though, say in the next few weeks, I’d hope someone could knock up an underground bunker for me ‘coz at that point I’d be too busy out on the town maxing out credit cards and burning bridges. I learnt this week that RSVPing to a wedding invite “maybe next time” isn’t quite the right response. It went down like a toasted cheese and glass sandwich. Never mind that I’ve spent a fair bit of the last week worried sick that if one of my kids turns out to be a famous painter, then I’ve quite possibly thrown away millions of dollars worth of their artwork. In other news this week, another Mars robot has beamed back pictures of nothing from the red planet. No pictures of ESPN,

beer or nasty adult movies, proving once and for all that men are not from Mars. Marriage is tough, right? It really is. It has its good times and it’s not so good times. But it’s also supposed to be permanent. It’s like a big tattoo that yells at you. My cousin Damien has had two very unlucky marriages. His first wife ran off with another bloke. The second one didn’t. This week’s brew comes courtesy of the legends at Newstead Brewing Company in Brissie. I’m a massive fan of the Newstead crew and their Out & a Bout Pale Ale is a real treat. The brewery itself is located on Doggett Street in Newstead, a street named after Brisbane’s 40th mayor Harry Doggett. The Pale Ale is a tribute to the great man and the somewhat unsavoury streets of Newstead in the early 1900s, where if things got a little dicey, you’d be asked to take it outside. The Out & a Bout packs a tasty little punch, featuring a pine needle bouquet with an orangey, fruity palate it’s a cracking modern style all occasions ale that you should treat like a cab after a big day at the races and get into it. Remember for every beer we drink this coming festive season, God takes one minute off our lives and puts it onto Derryn Hinch’s. What’s a dozen minutes right? I give the Newstead Out & A Bout Pale Ale 4 out of 5 thumbs up.

OUR 50TH YEAR

TRANSPORT NETWORK UNIFIES A REGION

THIS MONTH IN HISTORY

The double lanes of the Sunshine Motorway are filling up and it’s only getting busier, but it wasn’t that long ago that motorists were driving on sandy tracks to get around the Sunshine Coast, writes DOT WHITTINGTON.

sk anyone who has served in local government and they will tell you that roads (along with rates and rubbish) were the big issue during their tenure. During the late 20th century, the list of projects to seal roads around a division was not only a key election platform, but was the subject of regular review at council meetings. It was a challenge, as there were lots of them – rough tracks with kerb and channeling still just a dream. In the beginning, there was the Cobb and Co route between Brisbane and Gympie. It operated from 1868 to 1880. Rail came next, with the opening of the Brisbane to Landsborough line in 1890, and the following year its extension to Nambour and on northwards to Cooroy. Trams connected Palmwoods with Buderim and Nambour with Mapleton and the sugar cane train line was brought into service for beachgoers. Even in 1925, less than a century ago, the “means of access” for visitors to Maroochydore from Brisbane was detailed

in a tourist guide as: “Rail to Yandina (69 miles) thence per Coulson’s motor launch to destination. “Rail to Nambour (65 miles). Tram to Deepwater, thence motor launch to Maroochydore. Rail to Palmwoods (60 miles); tram to Buderim (7 miles) thence conveyance to destination (3 ½ miles). “Conveyance to Maroochydore; arrangements for hire to be made locally. By this latter means a good round trip could be undertaken, embracing Palmwoods, Buderim Mountain, Maroochydore and return either via Nambour or Yandina.’’ And then came motor cars and the serious business of building a road network for this new form of transport which quickly gained popularity. It wasn’t until the 1960s, that road construction became a serious business to open up a growing region. Bridges were key to these routes and that meant money. It was an expensive business and priority setting was keen. When Alfred Grant applied to start

development at Kawana, approval was granted on condition that the Nicklin Way and a connecting road to Point Cartwright was built. This included construction of three bridges at Currimundi Creek, the Mooloolah River and Tuckers Creek. Construction of the bridge over the Maroochy River at Bli Bli opened up the David Low Way heading north. And by the 1970s, a coastal route from Caloundra to Noosa was reality, albeit still rudimentary. PICTURE SUNSHINE COAST, SUNSHINE COAST COUNCIL

In 1872, 40,0000 hectares from Noosa Heads south to Sunshine Beach was proclaimed by the Queensland Government as a Reserve for Aboriginal Mission purposes. It included Noosaville and Lake Weyba. The Reserve was cancelled in November 1878, with the announcement that 1700 acres would be opened for selection from January 1879 at an upset price of seven shillings and sixpence an acre and 8250 acres would be surveyed for auction.

DID YOU KNOW? • William Clark had experimented with sugar cane growing at Bli Bli in the 1860s, but in 1869, a group of Quakers took up land near the junction of the Mooloolah River and Sippy Creek. They planted sugar cane and erected a crushing mill. It was abandoned after severe flooding in the 1870s. • Pioneers referred to the rainforests as scrub, partial rainforests as bastard scrub and land with hardwood as forest land. The 50th Anniversary of the Naming of the Sunshine Coast will be celebrated on August 1, 2017. In the lead up to the occasion, My Weekly Preview will each week take a look into our region’s past. If you have any historical photos or stories to share, feel free to email: editorial@myweeklypreview.com.au

LIVING UP TO THE HYPE Mercedes-Benz has stayed a step ahead of the pack with its technology-rich new E-Class sedan. Words: Peter Atkinson, AAP.

M

ercedes-Benz describes this as the most technologically advanced car they have ever built. Which is a bit like singling out Bradman’s finest innings, or Donald Trump’s greatest gaffe (not that it’s done him too much harm). Still, when the world’s pre-eminent carmaker places such lofty expectations on a new model, the pressure to deliver is immense. Yet somehow, the new MercedesBenz E-Class lives up to the hype.

myweeklypreview.com.au

41.indd 1

It delivers luxury, technology, style and refinement in measures we couldn’t have dreamed about just a few years ago, such has been the pace of change, and advancement, in the luxury car segment. Mercedes calls this the 10th generation E-Class – although technically the company only adopted its letter-first naming convention in 1993. But it’s the latest expression of Benz’s love affair with the executive saloon format that started as far back as the early 1950s.

While it sits only midway up the Mercedes pecking order, the E-Class has in many ways been a standard-bearer for the famous three-point star for most of that time – with every successive model an evolutionary step forward. The problem, of course, is that it’s increasingly difficult to keep raising the bar. These days, technology is the dominant currency when it comes to selling cars in this very discerning part of the market and it’s here that Benz has put most of its focus.

Style, comfort and high-end specifications are a given, whether you’re shopping for a Beemer or a Benz, an Audi or an Infiniti, Lexus or Jag. While Jaguar has marked out its territory as the sporty, stylish alternative, the Germans are duelling for the technology edge – a battle to cram as much electronic wizardry as possible into their respective offerings. Enter the “smartest” Mercedes ever. Benz suggests that the new E-Class is a “major step towards autonomous driving’ – with some critics already dubbing it as the car that virtually drives itself, thanks to a new range of passive and active driver aides unveiled in its safety suite. Central to that is a Drive Pilot function that controls the speed, steering and distance to the car in front using a series of sensors. Adaptive cruise control and self-parking systems further reduce the onus on the driver. Active lane-departure mitigation and autonomous collision avoidance make this car almost impossible – or at least very difficult – to crash. The E-Class will initially be offered in five model specifications in Australia – with a choice of four-cylinder turbo petrol and diesel engines (the E200 and E220d), a six-cylinder petrol V6 (E350) and turbodiesel (E350d) and a twin-turbocharged sixcylinder (E400). An even more powerful eight-cylinder petrol variant, plus an electric hybrid, will be unveiled in the new year. We drove the new E-Class in its least expensive, most basic form – the turbocharged, four-cylinder E200 – using a two-litre petrol engine delivering 135kW and 300Nm. With a starting price of $89,900 plus onroad costs, it’s about $10-grand more expensive than the previous entry-level model, although technology and comfort continued over>

MOTORING <from previous page have both been substantially ramped up. In fact first impressions suggested the E200 feels more like the flagship S-Class limousine – both in appearance and functionality. Key to that is the widescreen cockpit format – first unveiled in the S-Class - with side-by-side 12-inch, high-definition display screens replacing the customary instrument panel and command-screen format. The screens can be customised to suit the driver’s preference – with three main modes and an almost limitless range of customised formats. Navigating the two screens is simple, thanks to two little touch-pads, which replace buttons or scrolling dials, on the steering wheel controls. They work by brushing your finger over them – the same technology as your smart phone – bringing new meaning to the term fingertip control. The two screens stretch two-thirds of the way across the Benz’s dash, which is distinguished by a curving, sculpted swathe of timber panelling that dissects the cabin. It’s beautiful, tasteful and seriously luxe. The turbine-style airvents, piano black finishes and sleek centre console evoke both the S-Class and the smaller C-Class, establishing a clear design ethic across the Benz sedan range. Outside, the family lineage is equally

unobtrusive, with the power being delivered in a seamless, intuitive fashion. Put it all together and this bigger, better E-Class further advances perhaps the world’s best passenger saloon. A car worthy of Bradman. Or maybe even the next President of the United States.

MERCEDES-BENZ E-CLASS HOW BIG? It’s the German equivalent of the Holden Commodore – so it’s amply-sized for a full family with all their luggage.

HOW FAST?

strong, particularly from the front and rear. Dynamically, the E-Class has always been a personal favourite with its flat, well-resolved handling and peerless ride and quietness. This model continues that tradition. OK, the 135 kilowatt turbo four hardly delivers firecracker performance – but it’s perfectly adequate and many Benz devotees would never ask for more performance than this car delivers. But I’d be inclined to spend at least the additional $3000 to step up to the dieselpowered E220, which boasts substantially

more torque and, as a bonus, a ridiculously frugal thirst of just 4.1L/100k. Many will no doubt be tempted to look further up the model range but the next step up is a big one – $134,900 for the E350d. Historically, high-end European brands have tended to deliver slightly spartan trim in their bargain-basement models – after all, the Germans use the basic E-Class as taxis – but that is far from the case with the E200. It is, of course, whisper quiet, as we’ve come to expect of vehicles of this pedigree. The nine-speed auto is as efficient as it is

Well, the model we’ve tested here is the least powerful of the range – so it’s not a worldbeater. If you want more grunt, there’s plenty available as you step up the model range – but at a price.

HOW THIRSTY? The turbocharged, four-cylinder engine and its ultra-smooth, ultra-efficient nine-speed auto transmission allows this big car to deliver a very respectable 6.4L/100km.

HOW MUCH? Again, this is where the entry-level model tested here makes a compelling case. At $89,900 plus onroads, it’s almost as affordable as the smaller, less-sophisticated C-Class with many of the features found in E-Class models costing twice as much.

unshine Coast charity SunnyKids has received a boost to the tune of $30,000 thanks to the generosity of a Maroochydore car dealership. Ken Mills Toyota Maroochydore’s fourth annual Millsy’s Donation Drive centred on a ‘You drive, we donate’ campaign. For each vehicle taken for a test drive at either the Maroochydore or Nambour dealership during a two week period in October, the company donated $40 to SunnyKids. A fun night of food and fundraising at the Ken Mills Toyota Service Centre’s Pop-Up Restaurant also contributed to the cause.

“The event is somewhere between a car yard sausage sizzle and a very elaborate restaurant, and in the middle you have the pop-up restaurant,’’ explains Brett Mills. “Obviously it is a car workshop by day, but the incredible team who are my staff at Ken Mills Toyota transformed it into a restaurant for 150 people in under 24 hours. “We are a big supporter of SunnyKids and we wanted an event where like-minded people can get together. We have one big table down the middle; it’s a communal kind of event, we share food, break some bread, have a drink and raise money for that awesome charity which supports the kids in our community. “As a father and long term resident of the Sunshine Coast, it is something I am especially proud to be involved in.” SunnyKids CEO and founder Chris Turner says the donation drive forms an essential part of the SunnyKids program. “Without the support of Brett Mills, himself a dedicated family man, we simply wouldn’t be able to reach the number of vulnerable children that we do,’’ Turner says. “Put simply the $30,000 raised by Brett and his team will secure support for an additional 62 children, and for that we are very grateful.”

THE POWER OF PRINT TO SELL HOMES

Getting the best price for your home can be as simple as ensuring your property reaches the eyes of as many people as possible. Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane looks at how marketing makes a huge impact in the final instalment of a five-week series.

T

he proof is in the pudding, both statically and anecdotally – it pays to invest in a thorough marketing campaign when selling your property. CoreLogic RP Data studied the sales history of 850,000 houses across a two-year period and found a combination of print and online advertising will sell homes faster and get the best price. The study, released in 2015, found residential properties sell on average seven days faster than those advertised only online and data compiled from Brisbane research shows properties advertised across both print and online experienced a 12.5 per cent increase in success rate and an increase of 5.8 per cent (or $27,000 for the average home) in the sale price. Define Property principal Ross Cattle says as much as trends shift to online, there is always a prominent place for print when marketing properties. In fact, the power of the combination of the two is irrefutable. “We have tracked where buyers have come from for over a decade and a prime example of combining print and online was a four-bedroom, deep water access, waterfront apartment that was very unique,” he says. “We had 48 viewings over four weeks and 39 of those [potential] buyers came from print, not online. Why? Because of the uniqueness of the property, we attracted people into the market that weren’t looking online and we had people that were not actively looking at buying, but once they saw the apartment in the property magazine, they decided it was time to move.” Cattle says restricting advertising to online only, in this case, would have excluded the 39 potential buyers and this is a huge gamble for sellers to take for the sake of saving money on advertising by restricting the number of mediums they market their property on.

“I have been working in the coalface of real estate now for 19 years and time and again, I find if you cover all bases with marketing, it might cost you $1000 or $2000 on marketing, but getting sucked into free listings could cost you more and that could be tens of thousands more by not getting the best potential price,” he says. “It is also important to look at other aspects of marketing, like the tried and true door knock. We did this on a street where a property had been open listed for four months and we invited the neighbours to inspect the home and it was sold for $1.5 million to a buyer we had attracted from three houses away.” More recently, a property at 62 Oloway Crescent at Alexandra Headland was marketed by Define Property across both print and online and over a four-week period, it set the record for the most-viewed property for the agency this year.

remax.com.au

“If this isn’t a reason to utilise print, I don’t know what is” Ross Cattle

“When we look at the numbers to see how the buyers found the property, we were delighted by the even spread between print, online, signage and street marketing,” Cattle says. He says it is as simple as thinking whether you wish to target the best buyer from a pool of four or five, or attract a larger pool of 20 or 30 potential buyers. “It’s critical to attract more people to ensure the highest sale price. One of the only ways to boost the price is to attract more people, so the more you can reach through different mediums, the more chance you have of doing that. Don’t undersell your biggest asset.” Cattle says convincing the owner of an Alexandra Headland property to invest in a marketing strategy after his property was listed for 14 months resulted in the property selling a week before a listed auction for $8000 more than the original list price off the back of an average print campaign. “If this isn’t a reason to utilise print, I don’t know what is,” Cattle says. He says it is important for sellers to find an agent that could help them to set a realistic price range for their property. “You don’t have to list at a price and auction is always a great way of ensuring you don’t undersell, but you need to go into any marketing campaign knowing what is realistic and while there is always the exception to the rule and some properties just have no benchmarks to compare, in most cases there is evidence to give you a range,” he says. “Once you have the range, it’s about a good broad range of marketing ensuring your covering every angle. “The other important thing is presentation and keeping the lawns mowed and the house clean before you go to the market and during the campaign as this can make a difference in price and the speed of selling.”

THE RESURGENCE OF NAMBOUR

S

o what’s the first thing that springs to mind with the mention of the word: Nambour? We all know Kevin Rudd and Wayne Swan spent their formative years there, it was the birth place of Maroon’s legend, Billy Slater, and tennis icon Pat Rafter carved his junior tennis career out on the Washington Street courts. But the town is more than the Big Pineapple and Big Cow put together. Nambour is enjoying a resurgence in music, art and café culture, and thanks to events like TramFest and some creative local businesses, confidence in Nambour as a place to live, study and work is on the move. There is a rising population, an increasingly younger demographic and a real buzz around town. Local councillors have been proactive in revitalising the community that sits in the geographical heart of the Sunshine Coast. And according to recent industry data, Nambour housing is on the move at a similar pace with several new offerings coming to market. The lifestyle of Nambour is a great mix of relaxed and rural, funky and friendly. It offers a diverse range of services – education, health, retail, sports facilities and serves as the

SURF REPORT

with MWP’s man in the water

At last the Sunny Coast welcomed a few decent waves mid-week thanks to the Coral Sea low which fed our ENE swell window. Hope you got into a few and let’s hope it’s the start of things to come. This weekend looks like the early risers will be rewarded with a couple of feet of swell on Saturday, but onshore wind won’t last too long so the earlier the better. Sunday is expecting a southerly wind change so try Moffat, Dicky to Currimundi, and the Alex to Maroochydore stretch. Get out there and enjoy.

ESTUARY: Whiting and flathead on the drift from the Twin Waters weir to Maroochy bar using yabbies, with the low tide concentrating fish in the gutters. Work the areas just pumped for bait. Jew on live bait as the tide slows around bridge pylons with plastics also returning fish. The warmer weather has brought on the mangrove jack with live bait working wonders. SURF: Not as much action along the beaches as in the rivers, but the rising night tides are still producing tailor, bream and some unstoppables attracted to mullet fillet and pillies with Mudjimba and Pincushion the most action. Maroochy Beach for whiting and dart in the early morning. OFFSHORE: Conditions have not been favourable of late but the calmer conditions slowly returning. Closed season for spanner crabs from November 20 to December 20. So fishing for mixed reef fish is the go. The hottest time of the day seems the quietest, so early mornings and evening fishing most favoured by seasoned offshore brigade. Mackerel starting to show up as the water temperature rises. FRESHWATER: Impoundments firing at present with the rising barometer best. Deep diving lures and live shrimp working well in Somerset, Bjelke Petersen and Boondooma, but our little local creeks are also producing well for bass on shallow divers and poppers as they move down to breed.

ARIES (Mar 21-Apr 20)

TAURUS (Apr 21-May 21)

GEMINI (May 22-Jun 21)

The new moon activates your adventure zone so your motto for the next few months is from birthday great, writer Mark Twain “Sail away from the safe harbour. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”

Don’t accept things at face value. With the new moon and Neptune stimulating your research zone, look beneath the surface to discover what’s really going on. Group activities will also be confusing so pay attention to the finer details.

Get ready for a relationship renaissance, as the new moon kick-starts your love life. Attached Twins shift into a serious new phase of a long-term partnership, while some singles will go on a promising first date.

CANCER (Jun 22-Jul 23)

LEO (Jul 24-Aug 23)

VIRGO (Aug 24-Sep 23)

Tuesday night’s new moon highlights health and fitness over the next few weeks. But - if you overindulge at celebrations - then you won’t fit into your clothes by Christmas! Venus and Uranus also fire up some divine discontent in your house of love.

The new moon encourages you to tap into your inner muse and be a creative cat. As Madonna (a fellow lion) sings, it’s time to “Express Yourself”. But don’t let imaginative daydreams turn into escapist delusions.

Home Sweet Home is a veritable minefield this week! A relationship with a loved one could end up in a mess, as you misread each other’s words and motives. So avoid jumping to conclusions and don’t hesitate to ask for some firm clarification.

LIBRA (Sep 24-Oct 23)

SCORPIO (Oct 24-Nov 22)

SAGITTARIUS (Nov 23-Dec 21)

The new moon sends a social media or education opportunity your way. But don’t sit on the sidelines and limit yourself Libra! And don’t let negative self-talk stymie your upward trajectory. You are far better at what you do than you think you are.

Are you worrying about a money issue? This week, avoid being uncharacteristically rash with cash and credit. And don’t let a friend or family member bulldoze you into a financial situation that you really don’t feel comfortable about.

Has a certain person been undermining your confidence? A close friend, family member or work colleague is unhappy with your current choices but you must formulate your plans to suit yourself, not others.

CAPRICORN (Dec 22-Jan 20)

AQUARIUS (Jan 21-Feb 19)

PISCES (Feb 20-Mar 20)

Venus is vamping through your sign so aim to be the most charming Capricorn you can be. Some solo time is favoured on Tuesday, when the new moon stimulates your privacy zone. Friday is a fabulous day to take a calculated risk, especially at work.

Tuesday and Wednesday are the days to do something unexpected, as Uranus unleashes the adventurous Aquarian within. But if you are too impatient, distracted (or even reckless) then you could find yourself involved in an argument or accident.

How’s your career going? With the new moon activating your job zone, you need to have a long think about adjustments that would improve your work experience in 2017. Have the courage to follow your intuition - it will point you in the right direction.

THE LAST WORD

LOOK MUM, NO HANDS Richard O’Leary asks, would a driverless car make a better choice than a human driver in a crash?

W

hat has two faces, is as big as an elephant and runs as fast as Usain Bolt? The first fully driverless, electric shuttle bus, which is being trialled in Perth. OK, not the best riddle of all time, but accurate nonetheless. Why two faces I hear you ask? Well, when you don’t have a driver the front and back of a vehicle lose their importance – the RAC Intellibus can drive in either direction without turning around. I was a passenger in this vehicle recently and I have to say you get over the bus being driverless really quickly. Any apprehension about safety dissipates within a few minutes of travel – the trial only allows the bus to go 11 kilometres an hour despite its capability to approach the speed limit in a school zone (which makes it closer to O’Leary than Olympic champion speed).

The cameras, GPS, and odometry combine with incredibly conservative settings so any car within cooee sets off the autonomous emergency braking. To be honest, within a kilometre or two, the greatest threat to one’s personal wellbeing is the potential to die of boredom. But that’s exactly what you want if you are the organisers of the trial. It did get me thinking though about the challenges faced as more driverless vehicles begin to operate on our roads. Those in the know predict that the widespread release of autonomous vehicles could be with us by 2020. Which poses a really important ethical question – how are these vehicles going to be programmed to avoid risk? There was recently a really interesting article on just this dilemma in the New York Times. It posed the conundrum of a car in a scenario where it either had to run off the road and risk killing its passengers, or

plough through a crowd of people. How does the algorithm weigh up the right course of action? Would the car make the same decision as the humans who are travelling in it? And if the computer chooses poorly, who is responsible? The car maker, the programmer or the poor person sitting in the car? This question was posed in a series of studies, which were recently published in the journal Science. Most people said the car that avoided large scale loss of life at the expense of the people it was carrying was the most ethical vehicle – yet just about everyone agreed they would only buy a car programmed to do the exact opposite. It may be hands-free driving, but it seems we still have a firm grip on self-interest.
