eing a working mother can be exhausting. Don’t get me wrong, I get the best of both worlds – a fulfilling and enjoyable career and the love and bond that comes with being mum to a two-year-old child. But I can certainly appreciate the difficulties former Coast woman Cindy Vogels has faced. I take my hat off to this inspirational woman, who is our profile story this week. Rather than accept her life for what it was, she stepped outside her comfort zone to create her own opportunities and fulfil her passion. This single mother of four children is tackling life head on and by doing so, setting a terrific example for her offspring – something many working mothers are proud to do. Vogels – who graces our cover with country songstress Caitlyn Shadbolt – shares her journey, from milliner to celebrity stylist. The day I married my best friend and husband of 18 years, Rob, a rough and tough Rhodesian boy. We met when I was 18.
My first job was managing a holiday resort in Zululand, nestled away in the lush sugar cane fields and set on the sprawling estate of an old traditional colonial farmhouse.

WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY WORKING ON? A million and one things. I am finishing off an anatomy assignment for college, answering model applications, chatting to my friend about my recent break-in at the salon and trying to block out all the “Mum, may I have a cold Milo.”
The day we were told that Rob has a rare and terminal bone cancer in his spine; I decided to be proactive and raise awareness for Rare Cancers Australia.

The adjunct professor at the University of the Sunshine Coast (USC) is a futurist who spends his working life analysing scenarios that could play out in our world, so we can plan for them. Inayatullah was recently appointed Chair on Future Studies at UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation), working with institutions in Malaysia, the Asia-Pacific, North America and elsewhere. “This new role recognises the work of the community of futurists and the importance of future studies at a global level,” he says. “It’s really working out what to do with leaders who don’t understand the emerging future. “Big issues such as climate change and technology disruption can benefit from futures thinking. The aim is to devise long-term policy solutions and good governance for future generations by preparing people, businesses, communities and nations for transitions to different types of futures.” Professor Inayatullah’s expectations of radical change in global education over the next 15 years were recently published in USC’s 20th anniversary celebration book, Visions. His piece for the book was titled, How Well Do You Get Along With Your Robot? The piece references the likelihood that artificial intelligence (AI) will make many jobs obsolete, but Inayatullah says we can use AI to our advantage, rather than fear it. It’s hoped the benefits of Inayatullah’s UNESCO appointment will spread to the Sunshine Coast by encouraging PhD research at USC which would aim to help our region tackle future problems. With AI and other advances in technology set to dramatically change the way we live over the next 50 years, we asked Inayatullah to comment on some of the most exciting changes we are likely to see.
1. DRIVERLESS CARS Buckle up people, we’re in for a fun ride. Robotic vehicles operated by AI are no longer the stuff of science fiction. Selfdriving cars (with a human driver present) and completely driverless cars are lauded as the future of motoring – it’s hoped they will make roads safer and reduce congestion. Adelaide was the first Australian state to trial a self-driving car, the Volvo XC90, in November 2015 and the first self-driving car developed in Australia was unveiled in

October this year, a joint venture by German multinational Bosch and the Victorian Government. It uses the shell of a Tesla with Bosch components and took a team of 45 people nine months to build. US-based developer of software for self-driving cars, nuTonomy, trialled a driverless taxi service in Singapore in August (with a driver as backup) and Uber began public test rides of its automated fleet in the US city of Pittsburgh in September. Tesla CEO Elon Musk says all Tesla cars built from now on will contain fully autonomous hardware (without the features activated at this point). US company IHS Automative, which analyses market trends, predicts that 10 per cent of all new vehicles sold 20 years from now will be self-driving. But there are a multitude of safety and ethical concerns to iron out before then – how does the car’s AI software choose between protecting a driver or hitting a child who runs into its path? The US government recently set guidelines for companies wishing to test self-driving cars on public roads, however Australia is yet to set similar guidelines. While numerous trials are underway, a future where we’re all chillaxing in driverless cars on our way to work is a way off yet. The US Society of Automotive Engineers defines stages of autonomous driving from none to level five, which is fully robotic. Toyota has said it will demonstrate an autonomous vehicle, with at least level four
capability, by 2020, in time for the Tokyo Olympics, but no one can say when we’ll reach level five capability. Professor Inayatullah says it’s too soon to say for certain when we’ll see driverless cars freely cruising Australian roads. “We don’t try to predict one future. We say, here’s the technology, what are the possibilities? In one scenario, we could have 50 per cent of cars being driverless in Australia by 2040 and by 2030 in Singapore.”

2. SOLAR GETS SEXIER Launched two weeks ago, Tesla’s solar roof tiles make something techy look sexy – a concept Apple cottoned onto years ago. But critics say the improvements are more about design and aesthetic than efficiency
and are unaffordable. However, there’s no denying they’ve gained enormous interest in a short space of time. At least two companies are planning to bring them to Australia, to be used in conjunction with the Tesla Powerwall 2.0 home battery. Australian home insulation firm CSR Bradford is already working with builders to offer the Tesla Powerwall 2.0 as a standard in new home builds. Integrale Homes is a Sunshine Coast company building new homes in estates like Aura, Harmony Estate at Parkview and Parklakes 2. They’re currently offering a complete solar PV system with a Tesla Powerwall for $3000 in addition to the price of a new home, a move that has proven popular with homebuyers. Brad Drinnan from Integrale Homes says, “Integrale Homes loves technology, full-stop. [The Powerwall] has an intelligent inverter that you can program to charge on a tariff that’s cheaper, say at night. We’re the first on the Sunshine Coast to offer the Powerwall and it has been really well received.” Inayatullah agrees Tesla’s solar roof tiles and the Powerwall are an exciting development and that in 10 to 15 years’ time, every home on the Sunshine Coast could be a producer of energy. “We will have solar panels or tiles that are far more advanced than what we have now,” he says. “If that’s the case, what happens to traditional energy companies, myweeklypreview.com.au

what happens to Origin in that environment? They can’t be energy providers because energy is already being provided. They become the Uber of energy – providing energy sharing apps. “With robots and AI systems when there are down times, you go high. Each home will be producing its own energy, have it’s own 3D printers‌ In that future things always go wrong. For companies like Origin, when things go wrong they provide the solutions. IBM went from producing desktops to producing energy solutions.â€?

Humans have harboured a deep fear of AI for years, hence the popularity of Isaac Asimov’s I, Robot science fiction stories published in the 1940s and ‘50s. More recently, physicist Professor Stephen Hawking was quoted as saying AI could be “either the best, or the worst thing, ever to happen to humanity�. Every tech company in the world is jumping on the AI bandwagon. Google has bought 11 AI companies and Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has said one of the company’s main goals is to “do world-class artificial intelligence research using all of the knowledge that people have shared on Facebook. Facebook is already using AI to identify spam, determine which Facebook user is in an image and make decisions on which posts and ads you can see.� But will humanity eventually be destroyed by AI? Not according to Inayatullah. “AI taking over – I don’t think that’s the big game right now,� he says. “I think that’s overdone. Fear plays easy; we’re trained for fear. If you don’t give people a chance to vent the fear, they can’t go to the good. But if you stay in the fear, you get ‘defend’, you don’t get ‘create’. “The real issue is to create skill sets to use AI wisely. By 2020, 80 per cent of all news could be done by AI. But that’s not the interesting part. The interesting part is the other 20 per cent. It’s seeing news not just about information – it’s community
“I’ve been tracking that for 15 years – it’s a disruptor,� he says. “The first burger cost $325,000. It was a lab-grown burger invented by the Dutch – some of the scientists who came up with it were from Perth. Now it’s dropped to $16 and a new company wants to drop it to $1.50. They’re saying it tastes as good as a burger. Why pay $5 for a burger when you can pay $1.50?� “The cultural early adopters will come from Sydney and Melbourne and it will take a while to reach regional areas, but it will catch on,� he says. “I moved to Mooloolaba in 1999 and there weren’t many vegetarian places to eat. Now they’re everywhere on the Sunshine Coast.�

4. CLEAN MEAT EATERS It might sound gross, but we’re going to be dining on lab-grown meat in the near future. NASA is 3D printing meat and an Israeli biotechnology start-up called SuperMeat is developing meat in a lab from the cultivation of animal tissue without harming any animals.

GENE TECHNOLOGY When My Weekly Preview interviewed Dr Karl Kruszelnicki in February, the scientific breakthrough he was most excited about was CRISPR. “CRISPR is going to be really big,� he said. “It’s genetic editing technology. You could have a child with cystic fibrosis and you could snip that out with CRISPR. We are in the first position ever that we can control our evolution. CRISPR will change genetics. What will we do with the increased population? What makes you think we’re going to live on Earth? We are turning into a space-going race.�

A study* released in April 2016 gives new hope for people suffering with disc injuries. Disc injuries can cause havoc with the spine and also irritate, compress or sometimes pinch on the nerves. KEEP A LOOKOUT OUT FOR TURTLE NESTS Sunshine Coast residents are being encouraged to keep an eye out for turtle nests, with the season about to get into full swing. TurtleCare volunteers have spotted a green sea turtle who laid the first nest of the season in the Bokarina sand dunes. Last season, between November and May, 143 registered volunteers contributed around 4766 hours patrolling beaches. Around 6400 turtle hatchlings emerged between Caloundra and Point Cartwright. GRAMMAR SCHOOL CAR WASH SUCCESS FOR CHARITY In a muscly effort, more than 60 Sunshine Coast Grammar School staff and students washed 200 cars at Buderim War Memorial Hall. The volunteer Grammar Helping Hands community dedicated four hours to wash cars, raising funds for Verrierdale-based Sunshine Coast Riding for the Disabled. “For us, it is about giving our time and energy to help those who are less fortunate than us,” Community Coordinator for Grammar Helping Hands Ben Princehorn says.

THREE WINNING UPGRADES An upgrade to a park in Coolum’s civic heart and a historicalthemed youth activity precinct and war memorial in Nambour have taken out three Institute of Public Works Engineering Australasia awards for the Sunshine Coast Council. The awards were announced at the Queensland Excellence Awards Gala Dinner, held in Brisbane last week, where the council was nominated for four awards. “It is great recognition of our teams’ abilities to develop and manage construction of outstanding facilities for our communities,’’ says councillor Peter Cox.

Atmail, Osler Technology and Strategik Pty Ltd will share in almost $300,000 of first round Advance Queensland Ignite Ideas funding. “I want this funding to be a catalyst for the international success of these businesses, helping them through the sometimes difficult developmental stages, building their resilience and giving them a boost onto the international stage,” Innovation Minister Leeanne Enoch says. “These are the companies which will build a robust knowledge economy for the Sunshine Coast and Queensland, and provide jobs for the future.”

TAKE A HIKE IN HONG KONG Lush countryside and uncrowded beaches await just outside the city.
I
’m standing at the edge of the ocean in my underpants, water lapping around my ankles, and preparing to dive into the cool water. This is the last thing I expected to be doing in Hong Kong. It’s a city known for bustling streets, high-rise buildings, high rents and high population numbers. On Hong Kong Island that’s certainly true. But take an Uber ride away from the city and you’ll find lush countryside, uncrowded beaches and geological treasures. I’ve come to Sai Kung in the New Territories to hike through Sharp Island. It’s humid. Sweat sticks under the collar of my
shirt and, like a true Aussie, I’m hankering for a cool dip in the ocean. But since I forgot my swimmers, I’m in my undies. Also known as Kiu Tsui Chau, Sharp Island is the largest island in the Kui Tsui Country Park and is part of the UNESCO Global Geopark. The lush green island is covered in rocks formed from volcanic fragments and magma. Locals call them pineapple rocks because their cracked surface resembles the fruit’s bumpy skin. The hike from Kiu Tsui Beach to Hap Mun Bay takes just over an hour. It’s advisable to do it in the winter months of November to March as the summer heat will make it tough.

The trail begins at Kiu Tsui Beach where Sharp Island connects to nearby Kiu Tau (island) by a natural stone bridge, called a tombolo. The Sharp Island tombolo is exposed at low tide, when it’s possible to walk from one island to the other. But instead, we’re heading up the hill, ascending a steep set of stairs away from the ocean and towards the top of the island. Butterflies flutter constantly across the trail, grabbing onto leaves and resting their wings. Above us, dozens of kites circle like a cyclone, communicating with each other as they ride the wind. As I follow the ridgeline I enjoy stunning views of secluded beaches, outlying islands and the towering mountains of the country park. Without the high-rise buildings in the distance, it would be hard to believe I am in Hong Kong. It’s stunning. After a 1.4-kilometre hike along a trail littered with gardenia flowers, we’re rewarded
with a view of Hap Mun Bay. The bay takes its name from the broken English form of ‘half moon’ and follows the shape of the beach. After a sweaty hike, it’s a rewarding sight. Flinging off our sneakers, we delight in the feel of sand between our toes. But it’s not enough; the water is beckoning. Diving into the water is an instant relief from the humidity and I wash the sweat and grime off my skin. The water is pleasantly cool, the kind of temperature that makes you want to stay in the ocean forever. The writer travelled as a guest of Hong Kong Tourism Board and Qantas.

ore often these days men and women are suffering with hormonal imbalances, which can cause insomnia, sweating through the night, difficulty concentrating, poor energy, poor memory, depression and anxiety. As we go through life, taking on more responsibility, the hormonal system must work harder, yet our hormone production is reduced from that in our 20s. Therefore, it’s important that we understand how to maintain the strength of this system. Certain nutrients are deficient in Australian soils and act as hormone communicators between the different glands. An example of this is iodine, which assists in keeping the hormones balanced. Including foods from the cruciferous family such as broccoli, cauliflower, brussel sprouts and cabbage is important for supporting the clearance of these excess hormones. REACHING FOR THE STARS How did a Sunshine Coast single mother of four find herself working with one of the world’s most famous pop stars? WORDS: Leigh Robshaw

W
hen Cindy Vogels saw Lada Gaga singing alongside Tony Bennett wearing the feathered crown she had crafted with her own hands, she cried. It was a triumphant moment for the Gympie milliner and fashion stylist, a single mother of four who works seven days a week. “I felt pure elation,” she says. “My legs crumpled beneath me. My kids stood around me in awe, because they knew how hard I’d been working.” It was a big break for a girl who grew up in Nambour and dreamt of a career in fashion. Her mother owned a garment manufacturing factory on the Coast in the 1980s and ‘90s and while other kids played on jungle gyms, she played around sewing machines. When she left Burnside High, she studied a diploma of fashion on the Gold Coast and launched her own label, then put her dreams aside to become a wife and mother. “I sat up in bed on my 39th birthday, four years ago. I’d been a completely devoted mother and wife for more than a decade and hadn’t done anything in my industry since I ran off to get married and start a family. I was really craving it and missing it and I didn’t know how to step back in, because I’d lost all my connections. A decade is a long time to be out of your industry. You’re completely starting from scratch.” That night, she made a list of everything she was going to achieve in the year proceeding her 40th birthday, which included launching her millinery label, The Devoted Milliner. “By January of 2013 I hit the launch button… and within 18 months I was working with Lady Gaga.” Brandon Maxwell Studios in New York spotted Vogels’ work on Instagram and asked if she’d contribute to the US for Lady Gaga’s Cheek to Cheek promotional tour with Tony Bennett. “For the first two months I actually didn’t believe it was legitimate but kept working anyway, on the small chance it was real. They said they’d been following my work and loved my designs. I had five sleepless nights with a lot of loud Lady Gaga music playing. I completely researched everything she was wearing and tried to tap into her energy at the time.” The first shipment Vogels sent contained seven pieces and nothing was used. Delivery costs were covered, but no payment was offered. “I remember being absolutely terrified sending my first ‘drop’ – their name for a collection. A friend said to me if there was a one per cent chance your collection could arrive in Manhattan with the chance of it being worn by Lady Gaga, would you do this? I took a deep breath and said yes.” The day Lady Gaga chose to wear Vogels’ black feathered crown, there were 47 other global designers

contributing to the film shoot. “The feathered crown was sitting in its return box for six weeks before I even knew it had been used,” she says. “It wasn’t until I was bombarded with texts and messages online one morning that I knew. I woke up and there she was, wearing a piece out of the second drop I sent over. It changed my life as a designer. Having that opportunity gave me exposure like I’ll probably never get again.” Three days after Lady Gaga wore the crown, a Hollywood collector offered Vogels $10,000 to buy it, but she declined. Vogels used what she learnt working for Lady Gaga to launch her second label, Racy & Lucky, a styling service for musicians, particularly Australian country artists. Growing up with a father who played in a country music band, she has a soft spot for the genre and her signature Racy & Lucky T-shirts have created a new niche for the designer. Vogels has a busy schedule, travelling interstate twice a month for music festivals, videos and fashion appearances, and recently returned from the spring racing carnival in Melbourne, where she co-hosted the annual Late Mail Luncheon. Fortunately, her close-knit family are always on hand to help
with the kids. After a painful divorce, Vogels found herself alone with her four children, aged six, 10, 12 and 16. Four years ago she moved from Buderim to Gympie to be closer to her family. “I work seven days a week and I’ve moved my studio home so I can be close to the children as much as possible,” she says. “I’m in a high functioning survival mode, recovering from divorce. Everything I’m doing now is to show them when you have the rug pulled out from under you, you can achieve success as long as you have passion and drive.” Vogels snapped up another great opportunity when she was asked to style The X Factor runner up Caitlyn Shadbolt, a fellow Gympie Girl, for her videos. “I was invited to dress her for the red carpet at the Golden Guitar Awards in January and the Country Music Channel awards in March. I had my first red carpet gowns exposed to the masses and it has opened doors with other artists.” She recently began working with Christy Lamb, who tours with Lee Kernaghan, and performed a duet with Keith Urban at the Deni Ute Muster over the September/October long weekend, and she’s also styling Missy Lancaster, the first female Australian country music artist to be signed by Sony. “I particularly have a passion to transform the face of Australian female country music artists and help them to shine as bright as the American girls do.”

o I cannot help myself. I am a Christmas tragic. The planning has already started and the tree is going up this weekend. And yes I feel damn smug. Yes, it is early to put up my trees. Yes, we have more than one. You see, I like to get in while it is still mid-November and get value per use every year due to my exorbitant decoration collection. No one else has 40 snow domes, I can assure you. No other nutter boasts 50 reindeer ornaments. And do not get me started on the dozen or so wreaths I have in storage boxes. They are just popped away in one of 15 huge storage boxes packed sky-high in a storage shed. I collect decorations like a boss. It is a shame it is not an Olympic sport. Of course, having three young children really does make it such an exciting time of the year. I have been stumped twice by my five-year-old this week with questions about Christmas. The first question was: how old would Jesus be and would we be putting birthday candles on the plum pudding? Umm. I had never thought of doing that to honour The Big Man. The second chat we had still has my head spinning. My girl’s bedroom mess is well-documented in this column. So, we are having a clean-out and I explained to Ms Lucky that we need to give some of her toys to kids who perhaps cannot afford toys. My logic is Santa will be coming with gifts so we
need to clear the decks. My daughter shot back that Santa visits all kids, so the poor kids actually do not need toys because every child who believes will receive. Right. Okay. Got me again. So let the good times roll. It is going to be a great festive season. The mangos and cherries are in season. The frangipanis are blooming. John Farnham and Olivia have a new Christmas album out. Fruit mince pies are now allowed to be consumed on a daily basis. The beaches are beautiful and summer storms are soaking

Soon we get to take our family Christmas photo, where every year I secretly hope at least one kid will cry because it would be boring if they all just smiled and acted sweetly. One year, my spirited child did not pass on the Christmas spirit and indeed kicked poor old Santa in his sack. It makes me smile every time I look at that photo. It is Christmas carol season. And even the silly cricket on the TV cannot dampen my happiness. So let’s all agree to try and have a merry season because we really are the luckiest people on the planet.
T
here isn’t a week that goes by where we don’t hear about transport on the Sunshine Coast. From the airport and flights north through to Bruce Highway upgrades and the introduction of paid parking. This is great because we as a community need to be having these discussions. A hot topic at the moment is the congestion that we are likely to face when the Sunshine Coast University Hospital opens in 2017. The Mooloolah River Interchange is touted as the solution, however even if the interchange works commenced next year, it will be five years before completion. So I don’t believe this can be our only solution. We need to discuss, plan, think and act differently and make choices about how we commute. As the Sunshine Coast continues to grow, we need to adopt innovative solutions as well as modal migration to public and active transport. Last year my wife and I travelled extensively overseas and I got to experience how technology can give you choices and change commute habits. For the most part, we took public transport and utilised an App called Rome 2 Rio to work out which travel option, route and price suited us. WHEN THE HINTERLAND RULED With timber at the heart of the economy, government grew up in centres on the road to the capital, writes Dot Whittington.

t the foot of the Blackall Range where rich timber resources made it worthwhile for pioneers to settle, and on the main route between the capital and Gympie gold, Landsborough and Nambour were the logical centres for commerce. It was a time when progress was creeping from the south to the north, rather than west to east as occurred a century later. Maroochy Shire was first to break away from the Caboolture Divisional Board. On July 5, 1890, the Maroochy Divisional Board was proclaimed with its headquarters in Nambour, between Mapleton and Montville farms and the collection of fishing cottages known as Maroochydore. Buderim and Kenilworth were not originally included within the boundaries and the first council chambers were built on Blackall Terrace in Nambour. They were later relocated to Currie Street, above the Nambour Civic Hall and facing Station Square adjacent to the railway line where Centenary Square replaced it in 1990. By 1978, the impressive façade of the
old hall was hiding cramped quarters and staff were being billeted out to premises rented around the town: “Five people shared an office fit for two and one of those was the shire clerk.” The space was hopelessly inadequate to deal with a growing shire and in October, the new building was opened further south at Bury Street. It remains the administrative headquarters of the Sunshine Coast Regional Council – for now. Meanwhile, Landsborough, between Maleny and Caloundra, became the administrative centre of the Landsborough Shire – named for the explorer – when it too broke away from the Caboolture Divisional Board in 1912. The council met in Dyer’s Hall in the town until a basic shire office was built in 1913. War broke out a year later, and attention turned to the battlefields of Europe. Finally a new shire chambers, along with a school of arts, opened in Landsborough in 1924. By the 1960s, the population had shifted to the coast and more than 75 per cent of
the shire’s 7000 people were living in Caloundra so, in 1968, the old shire offices were abandoned in favour of a new building in Bulcock Street. The next big change came in 1987, when the Landsborough Shire became Caloundra City. It was a move supported by Jack Beausang who had been a councillor for 33 years, 24 of them as shire chairman. He believed it would block any moves to split the shire between coast and hinterland. In the north, Noosa Shire was formed in 1910 with Pomona as its local government headquarters, although Cooroy had been the main connection centre with the coast. The Noosa Shire Council headquarters remained in Pomona for the next 70 years before being moved to its current location on the river at Tewantin in 1980. The three shires made up the Sunshine Coast at its formation in 1967, and in 2008, were amalgamated under the banner of the Sunshine Coast Regional Council. Noosa went its own way by popular vote in 2013, and was de-amalgamated from January 2014, returning to Noosa Shire.
THIS MONTH IN HISTORY The roots of what we now know as the Sunshine Coast Regional Council lie in the record books under the date of November 11, 1879. It was on this day that the area was incorporated as part of the Caboolture Divisional Board, under the Divisional Boards Act of 1879. This acknowledged that it was no longer a collection of haphazard settlements, but a region in its own right.

In 1946, the town of Maroochydore boasted a population of about 500 and aeroplanes still occasionally landed on Aerodrome Road. By 1977 it was nudging 40,000 but just five years later, the population was more than 50,000. The 50th Anniversary of the Naming of the Sunshine Coast will be celebrated on August 1, 2017. aloundra scientist Elke Hacker is tackling the issue of skin cancer head on with her latest research project aimed at reducing sunburn in under 30s. Dr Hacker, who works at Queensland University of Technology’s public health unit, is trialling the success of UV indicator skin patches, which change colour to warn people if their sunscreen is wearing thin. The patches are being manufactured in America and Canada but are not yet available in Australia. The team’s summer pilot project, which continues through December, will test prototypes for efficiency and results before they hit the local market ahead of the 2017 summer months. “These new technologies are getting invented and are marketed straight to the community without any real regulation until a few years have passed,’’ Hacker says. “We are trying to bridge that gap to see if there are ways we can refine or improve the product to make it more sun safe.’’ The study will target young adults who are being encouraged to partake in the study by volunteering to wear a patch for a week. “We are targeting young people under 30 because we have a high sunburn rate in young adults,’’ Hacker says.

S
eemingly every day there are news items that move investment markets – Brexit, Trump, the Euro debt crisis, the potential for a Chinese meltdown, property overvaluations and so on. It is known that share markets tend to climb a wall of worry, even more so these days in an era of instant accessibility of information. There is a danger that as investors, we focus too much on these short-term news items rather than focussing on the bigger picture long term. Of course the problem is that the news is out there in many more forms these days, particularly online. And the media loves sensationalist headlines.
If the share market fell 80 points in a day, media headlines would read something like ‘Billions wiped off share market’. However as I write this article, the market was up almost 70 points yesterday, yet not a headline to be seen. One had to delve into the middle of the Financial Review to see an article. Investors tend to panic and allow knee-jerk reactions to certain events. Take Brexit for example. The market was sharply sold off on the news but yet within a few days it had recovered all the lost ground. Typically, these times of panic selling tend to create opportunities for astute investors. Warren Buffet was quoted once as saying: “The stock market is a device for transferring money from the impatient to the patient”, and this has never been truer than in the information age. And then there are the newsletter spruikers telling you about the looming financial crisis, and about how the market will plunge 90 per cent in the next three weeks. Most of these newsletters successfully
pick at least 100 of the last three crises. A quick audit of their historical results typically reveal these wild claims are rarely accurate. Successful investors ignore the market noise and invest for the long term. They are fully aware of the investment cycle, they are diversified among asset classes, they don’t follow the herd, they don’t over gear, and they look for businesses with sustainable and growing business models. They also look for emerging themes, for example the rise of the Asian consumer or
the ageing demographic. In summary, some basic rules for investors: ignore short-term news and recognise there has always been an endless stream of worries, build your own set of investment criteria to assist in filtering news, don’t check your investments every day, and look for opportunities thrown up by media hysteria and panic. Some other rules thrown in as a bonus: small caps will generally outperform large caps over the longer term, active investing will generally outperform passive investing, and some themes such as the ageing population and the rise of the Chinese consumer will play out over multiple decades. BOY & BEAR BACK ON THE ROAD Hot off a smashing tour of the USA and Canada, ARIA award-winning band Boy & Bear will showcase their latest album Limit of Love to fans on the Sunshine Coast. Roxanne McCarty-O’Kane caught up with bassist Dave Symes in the lead-up to the group’s tour.

heir name was randomly created through an online band name generator, but nothing Boy & Bear have done since has been left up to chance. Talking to My Weekly Preview one day into their latest regional Australia tour, bassist Dave Symes breathes a sigh of relief as he recalls how he and bandmates Dave Hosking, Killian Gavin, Jon Hart and Tim Hart touched down in Melbourne last week and avoided the craziness that ensued as Donald Trump was elected the US president. The accomplished indie, rock and folk outfit have just completed their mammoth tour of American and Canada. “Like everything in America, whether it is culture or politics, it seems to affect the rest of the world, so we did find ourselves watching the debates and it was interesting to meet so many people over there and see their different points of view,” Symes says. “It was nice to get out of there just before (voting) happened and after being away for so long, it was nice to come home and just drive around Victoria and prepare for the Australian regional tour.” The Lake Kawana Community Centre is
one of the stops on the month-long tour and Symes says he is looking forward to venturing back to the region. “We love the Sunshine Coast because it’s at the top of that really nice stretch of Australia from Byron Bay up and there are so many music lovers there,” Symes says. The band’s third album Limit of Love debuted at number one on the ARIA albums chart last year and a re-release live tour edition a month ago has kept fans satiated while they get the touring out of their system.
Symes says they are already itching to get back into the studio, but regional tours are dear to him. “The bottom line is, we love making music and we love playing live and we are always thrilled when we get an audience where we choose to go and play.” This humility is something found in every member of the band, who are multi-instrumentalists and collaborate in such a way that each band member can be the creator of a song.
“We all work together on everything and allow each other’s strengths to come forward at the right time,” he says. “While some songs can start with a bass line or a drum beat, a lot of things come from acoustic guitar and vocals and then we transform them as a band.” Since Boy & Bear formed in 2009, they have been wowing audiences far and wide with their unique writing style, distinct vocals and their use of string instruments to produce catchy ‘70’s style rock songs with church-like harmonies. Symes says although travelling on tour and performing three or four shows back-toback in different towns can be exhausting, they like to slightly adapt each show to make sure they were giving fans something special. “We like to keep it fresh, which can be the biggest challenge,” he says. “We have three albums now, so we have a fair bit of material to draw from and we also throw in a cover or two, which is something we like to work on when we can.” Boy & Bear will perform at Lake Kawana Community Centre on November 19. Renowned artist Valarie Ross is Clearing the Decks to raise funds for Cittamani Hospice. Ross is an accomplished artist, having more than 50 years’ experience in the visual arts. Ingredients: 300g dark chocolate, finely chopped 100ml whipping cream Unsweetened cocoa powder or finely grated chocolate 1 tsp vanilla extract

In a saucepan, heat the whipping cream until simmering and pour over the chocolate. Add the vanilla extract. Whisk lightly until the mixture is smooth and thick. Using a teaspoon or piping bag fitted with a round nozzle, make small balls of ganache on the lined baking tray. Place the tray into the refrigerator for about 50 minutes. To make the coating, sift cocoa powder into a flat container. Wearing rubber gloves, use a fork to roll the balls in the cocoa powder or grated

chocolate, coating them evenly. Place in a sieve and shake gently to remove any excess coating. Put each truffle into a small paper baking case or cupcake case. TIP: The truffles will keep about 15 days stored in an airtight container in a cool place (12°C maximum). You can keep the truffles refrigerated for one week on a plate filled with cocoa powder, before rolling them in cocoa and placing in paper baking cases.

PRACTICAL BECOMES THRILLING Buying groceries will never be the same in Audi’s RS6 Avant – perhaps the world’s fastest station wagon. Words: Peter Atkinson, AAP.
B
eing sensible doesn’t normally feel this good. And being practical, as far as I can remember, has never been quite so thrilling. Because sensible, practical cars, as we
all know, are more about function than form, or fun. But German maker Audi has forever changed the rules for practical cars with its latest lethal load-lugger – the RS6 Avant.
Yes, technically it’s a wagon. And yes, it does all of those practical, sensible wagon things. But it brings a few additional adjectives to the wagon lexicon as well. Sporty. Sexy. Stonking. Storming.
Not your typical wagon words. Some might argue that a couple of other words fit just as well. Superfluous, for instance. Maybe even silly. You see, on one hand the RS6 makes absolutely no sense. An indulgence that defies any kind of logic, delivering performance and capability that will never come close to being fully used on Australia’s speed-averse roads. On the other hand, it might just be the most versatile car ever built. Think about this for a minute. Not only can it fit five people in absolute comfort, but it can swallow a mountain of luggage or golf clubs or whatever else you need to cart around. It’s supremely safe with all-wheel-drive and an armada of electronic safety aides, warnings and avoidance measures. Not to mention gargantuan brakes that will stop it on a postage stamp (more of that later). And it saves fuel at every available opportunity – turning off the engine when you’re stopped in traffic and deactivating up to four cylinders when you’re cruising along the highway. Yet in a one-on-one contest it will blow some of the world’s top performance machines into the weeds. Its 0-100km/h sprint time of 3.7 seconds will leave plenty of Porsches, multiple Maseratis and even a few Ferraris choking in its exhaust fumes Continued over>

MOTORING <from previous page (and no doubt enjoying the seductive note of its twin-turbocharged V8 engine). That engine pumps out a gaudy 445 kilowatts and 700 Newton metres of torque. Yes, it’s a wild wagon. An indulgence disguised as something quite useful. Audi has carved out quite a niche for itself in this hyper-wagon territory. Arch-rival BMW’s M-Sport division doesn’t even offer wagon variants of its M3 and M5 sedans. But Audi, with its RS4 and RS6 Avant (the Audi name for wagon) models treats these machines almost as “hero” elements of its formidable performance range. This car is proof that Audi’s motto – Vorsprung Durch Technik, or progress through technology – is no idle boast. Every new model they bring out needs to lift the bar in one way or another. And this latest iteration of the RS6 most certainly does that. It is a dazzling display of that technology with twin turbochargers delivering not only brutal power and acceleration but surprising fuel-efficiency for a car with this performance pedigree. While that menacing performance lurks barely below the surface, you can still drive this car quite conservatively – the immense torque of that twin-turbo V8 meaning it will chug sedately around town. All-wheel-drive grip makes it safe and
secure in all conditions – and the massive brakes not only arrest it from racetrack-like speeds but also, as I encountered, allow you to stop almost on the spot when some inattentive guy in a Camry suddenly decides to stray into your lane without warning. That’s a good thing because the last thing I’d want to do is to hand back a $245,000 car with a few Camry scrapes on it. Oh, did I forget to mention that? Yes - a quarter of a million for this potent device. Oh, that’s not all by the way. Our test machine came with an optional $12,000 Bang and Olufsen sound system – in case you’d like to listen to music other than that emitting from the massive tailpipes – pushing the on-road price towards $270k. Audi also offers two “dynamic” packages – in case you crave just a little more
performance. One costs $4900 and adds dynamic steering, a dynamic ride control system and an expanded top-speed (electronically limited) of 280km/h. There’s also a $25,840 Dynamic package plus that adds all of the above, but bumps up the permitted top speed to 305km/h plus, sensibly, a ceramic braking system that will arrest those top speeds. Finally you can add an $8500 Carbon Styling package that adds some pretty carbon fibre features to the outside. Phew! The nett result is a ballistic wagon costing well in excess of $300-grand. Not everybody, of course, will see the value in this car. Even my wife, who doesn’t particularly like to drive fast and likes being driven fast even less, was aghast at the cost equation of the RS6. And given Australia’s very restrictive road speeds, it’s not an easy argument to make. You’ll rarely use this car beyond a fraction of its capability. Not everybody is going to take their family station wagon for track days at Phillip Island or Lakeside, just to blow out the cobwebs. But for those people who love cars – and
I’m happy to be counted among them – this machine is worth every precious penny. For the way it sounds. For the way it looks. For the way the body stiffens, then squirms and ultimately catapults you forward every time you push your right foot toward the floor.
AUDI RS6 AVANT HOW BIG? It’s based on Audi’s A6 executive wagon, so it’s a full-sized vehicle in terms of interior space and its carrying capacity.
HOW FAST? Where do we start. In the 3.7 seconds it takes to reach the legal speed limit, the Audi is just beginning to stretch its legs. The ballistic acceleration would continue all the way to 250km/h – and only then would an electronic limiter interrupt your progress.
HOW THIRSTY? In the interests of corporate responsibility, Audi has invested in numerous fuel-saving features on the RS6’s twin-turbocharged, 4-litre V8 engine. So it uses as little as 9.7L/100km on the combined cycle, and substantially less in cruising mode.
HOW MUCH? Here’s the painful bit – $245,400, plus onroad costs, just to get started. Tick a couple of boxes and there’s no change out of $300k.

BUYING AND SELLING IN THE SAME MARKET With the Sunshine Coast experiencing a rise in demand for properties, My Property Preview asked two industry experts what some of the benefits and pitfalls are of buying and selling in the same market and how to view the current market climate.
KAREN JONES, NEXT PROPERTY GROUP Buying and selling in the same market – this is possibly a term you may have heard from your agent in any experience when buying or selling. The relevance is this: ultimately, the market will determine the price your property achieves when offered for sale. What value the buyers put on your property is influenced by not only what your property offers, but what else is on the market for sale at the same time and also what comparable properties have recently sold for. Now certainly, an experienced and professional agent can negotiate favourably in the seller’s favour, but there are always market forces at play. I do come across sellers who are hoping for an above ‘market price’ for their property and are prepared to wait for that buyer that might, just might, see a higher value in their property than all the previous buyers and the market evidence would suggest. Sometimes sellers are in a fortunate position where they can wait for the market to reach their expectations, but this isn’t without its own set of problems. Buyers get concerned when a property sits on the market for a long time, especially in a buoyant market like we currently have. They will ask the agent two things normally; is the property overpriced or is there something about the property stopping buyers from proceeding? Either way, the conversations begin with a negative connotation rather than a positive, like when a property is fresh to market and interest and excitement at their peak. Most people selling, are selling to buy another property. And this is a position that you need to consider carefully. If you wait for the market to reach your

expectation of a selling price, there is every chance you will be paying more for the property you purchase, so this waiting game actually negates any advantage you thought you were achieving by waiting for that “dream price”, i.e. you might get more but you pay more. In my experience, if a property is marketed and presented properly, it will sell within the current average time on the market. A faster sale at a healthy market price will put you in a position to go out and purchase as soon as your contract is unconditional. Then you will be buying and selling in the same market.
There’s a common phrase we use without thinking: “Can’t see the wood for the trees”. But what does it really mean? In simple terms, it describes the difficulty in having any real perspective if you’re looking too closely at small details, or you’re too closely involved. The real estate market is heavily complicated by this dynamic. It’s such an important transaction for both buyers and sellers, it’s hard for either party to be objective. Some might say impossible. Even for good agents who work in one particular area or price point, it can be tough to see the big picture. That’s one of the upsides of being an independent auctioneer with extensive experience on the Sunny Coast. I’m lucky enough to work with more than 100 different agencies in our local region and have built up quite a picture of trends over the past 15 years living and working here. Now calling around half of all the auctions on the Coast, I really do see it all. Like many in our industry, I’m constantly being asked what I expect to happen with the market. My stock answer is that without a crystal ball it’s difficult to say, but recently my answer’s been a bit different. For context, the Sunshine Coast region is rapidly changing – gone are the days where
it was a seaside holiday destination and the bulk of full-time residents were retirees. Today, it’s a growing satellite city, with all the associated employment opportunities and necessary infrastructure. For the property market, this means demand is growing, both for owner occupiers and investors. So I do believe the future for the local property market is bright. But right now, there’s a twist – there’s not a lot of properties on the market for sale, which is putting a pressure on prices that won’t necessarily always be there. For those who’ve owned property here for many years, the result of this is that the current market value of their property might come as a surprise – particularly after the massive fall in prices the region experienced back in 2010–11, up to 40 per cent in some cases. I know for me personally, I was forced to hold property I would otherwise have sold for an extended period as I waited for prices to recover. But that time has come. Not only have prices recovered, they’ve grown, and today’s competition is yielding some tremendous results at auction right now. If you’ve been waiting to take your profit, the perfect opportunity might well be right in front of you – that’s the forest, not the trees.

Lake McDonald is one dam that is returning bass and Mary River cod on lures that dive to around three meters, fluro is the best colour.

POETIC JUSTICE Nobel Prize or not, Bob Dylan has always been a poet, writes Richard O’Leary.
I
t’s been a few weeks now since Bob Dylan was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature, but like the great man himself, I have maintained my silence for a little while to let the significance of the moment wash over me like the lyrics from one of his songs. My initial reaction to hearing the news was validation. Nearly three decades ago I remember asking my English teacher whether or not Dylan – Bob Dylan not Dylan Thomas – could be considered a poet. He dismissed the suggestion out of hand, probably a bit more bluntly than he needed to, or maybe I was just at an age when I saw any

contradiction as a personal slight. His basic premise was that Dylan’s writing would not stand the test of time. This was a man I respected. He once told me his proudest achievement was having read every Shakespeare play. He opened my mind to the beautiful precision of Donne and the bitter bite of Pinter. But he lost me a little at that moment. Not because of his opinion – even then I realised he was entitled to it, and many may well argue he was right, and remains so. But it was the offhand manner in which the suggestion was dismissed. Stated as a fact. Unequivocal. Not to be discussed further. Imagine for a second if he had explored the idea. Brought some Dylan songs to the class and
explained why he thought they were good lyrics, but not necessarily great poetry. We may have still disagreed, but maybe he would have learnt a little more about Dylan and I would have picked up a greater appreciation of some of the finer points of poetry. I must emphasise, despite the Nobel Prize, in no way am I claiming to be right. I am no expert. But for me Dylan has always been able to communicate universal themes in everyday language. Most importantly, he reaches my heart as well as my head – and for that reason he will always be a poet to me.
