’ll never forget the first time I saw a whale up close. After an uncertain wait, a dark mass appeared in the water and the boat inched its way forward. I feared the whale would flee like the marlin in Hemingway’s The Old Man and the Sea. But it stayed and played, circling the boat and slapping the water with its massive pectoral fin. This magnificent being was interacting with us – comparably ant-sized humans – clutching our cameras and pointing like overexcited children. Whales do that to you. They instantaneously lift your spirits and make you feel at peace. They emanate a gentle grace and playfulness that can’t help but make you smile. This has been a bumper season for whale spotting on the Coast, so do yourself a favour and book a whale watching trip while the whales are still hanging out in our wonderful waters. On the subject of water, something every parent of young children ponders at some point is swimming lessons. But is it better to throw them in the deep end as early as possible, or wait until they’re older? Candice Holznagel investigates in our cover story. We have a quick chat with a local entrepreneur who deftly juggles two kids and three businesses, and meet Monty Thomas, who will appear at this weekend’s Sunshine Coast Fashion Festival as Queensland’s first androgynous model. THE BLISS OF BEING YOUR OWN BOSS Award-winning Maroochydore entrepreneur Yvette Adams is a go-getter who dreams big and designs her day the way she likes it. IF YOU COULD CHANGE ONE THING ON THE COAST, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

FIRST JOB? The first income I earned was cleaning the houses of rowdy surf clubbies who would have wild parties (that I was sometimes at) and then I’d get in and clean them the morning after for some dollars to support my next sports trip. I was also a paid lifeguard at age 17. My first proper 9 to 5 job was working for the Hillary Commission, the equivalent of the Australian Sports Commission, as media liaison for Sir Edmund Hillary and many of the sports celebs of the day.

Help bring the International Submarine Broadband Cable project to fruition – a fast speed which would link the region directly to global communications systems in Asia, the Pacific and the United States. The council has lodged a submission with the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) to start the process to declare an offshore cable protection zone. If the zone is declared, this will encourage the private sector to deliver an international submarine broadband cable connection that would land at the Sunshine Coast, making us the only regional centre in Australia to offer direct international broadband connectivity to global markets

WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY WORKING ON? All sorts, as always. This includes working on a tender we just won with a group of Pacific Island Fisheries Administrations, which will involve a trip to a Pacific Island to deliver some training soon (don’t mind if I do). Doing pre-interviews for the next round of filming for my show about young entrepreneurs, which I am filming in Sydney. The show airs on brin.ai – a free app you can download and watch shows on via Android or iOS devices. Responsibilities associated with my new role as Chair of the Knowledge and Professional Services Taskforce – helping the region grow in a positive way.

CAN YOU NOMINATE A DAY IN YOUR LIFE THAT TURNED OUT TO BE A TURNING POINT? The day when I found out I had become pregnant on the pill in London. Everything changed when I knew I was on the journey to become a mum.

YOUR GREATEST REGRET? That I didn’t spend more time with my grandmother when she had a stroke in Brisbane and was in hospital for two weeks. I think I was in denial. I just thought she’d pull through and I’d see her again because she was such a strong woman. But her number was up. And I miss her every day.

YOUR FAMILY INCLUDES. . . Me, my son Rio (almost 13) and Matisse, 9. My cousin Shane also lives downstairs in our granny flat. And we have a steady stream of international guests.

The Yaroomba Beach site is a disused former golf course and is recognised as one of only two key, undeveloped Tourism Focus Areas on the Sunshine Coast – specifically set aside as primary locations for tourism related activities, facilities and infrastructure. Establishing a 5 Star eco-tourism resort will generate hundreds of local jobs and inject millions of tourism dollars into local businesses every year. Importantly the 5 Star eco-tourism

resort will be developed in the 1st stage. The important parabolic and frontal dunes that adjoin the site are not owned by Sekisui House, not included in the project and will not be developed. Sekisui House is targeting world class sustainability outcomes for the site, maintaining some of the mature vegetation and reducing the amount of imported fill under the new framework. He may be young, but at two years of age, Xavier has already mastered the core understanding of staying calm and finding the nearest surface for safety. His wide eyes seek out his parents, where he is rewarded with praise, shadowed by some relief. Moments later the energetic toddler is back in the pool, propelling himself through the water with strong kicks and a whole lot of confidence. This is precisely what Xavier’s father Sam Bingham has hoped for – his son to learn the basics of water safety. “He was five months old,’’ Bingham says of his son’s first swimming lesson. “We enrolled him for two reasons. One, is that we are living near the beach. We want him to be comfortable and safe around water and pools. I’m a surfer and that’s important to me. “Two, everyone was giving us the impression that the earlier you get them

into swimming, the more at ease he would be with learning. “We have had some people say it was pointless, saying that they are not learning at this level. “Of course they are learning. It’s the repetition. We are building into his conscience the safety aspect. He can go underwater, hold his breath, and climb out by himself.

Four of the 11 beach drownings in the state

of five in Australia. Tragically, many of these deaths also occur at home in the bathtub. Statistics from Kids Alive – Do the Five show that 47 children under five have drowned in the bath in Australia since 2000. For Steve Kerry and his wife Eve, these statistics are more than just figures – they are personal and it has been the driving

force behind their ambitious goal of changing the face of learn-to-swim programs not only on the Sunshine Coast, but Queensland-wide. And, it seems to be working. More than 10,000 local children have been taught at their school, Sink or Swim. The Kerrys left behind careers as advanced care paramedics for the Queensland Ambulance Service to answer the call for help in a different way. “Pretty much, it was being in the wrong spot at the wrong time,’’ Kerry recalls. “I happened to be called to, and went through a stage, where there were eight children in a two-week period all pulled out of the water. I won’t go into details, but obviously, if they are calling paramedics it’s bad. “This prompted me and my wife, who have two young children ourselves, to get [them] into swimming lessons. “In regards to safety, we wanted them to go from nought to a hundred in no time flat, hence why we do the model we do at Sink or Swim. “It’s about getting our kids swimming as best as possible, as fast as possible. “When we began teaching, nobody had only three students to a class. COVER STORY process at a young age. The goal is to teach children to reach for the safety of a wall or floating device, rather than panic on impact. “It’s about getting them familiar and happy. We have them on pool noodles and kickboards very early. I’ve had students floating around on pool noodles by themselves at 10 or 11 months. “We do falling in practice. Not just falling in from the wall; we flip them off the mats, fall in different ways, run and jump, get them falling in sideways, face first, going down the slide, falling in feet first. At a young age it’s not about the skill but the reaction. “You can’t drown-proof someone, but you can make them drown resistant.’’

The Australian Water Safety Council launched the Australian Water Safety Strategy 2016–2020 earlier this year with an aim to reduce drownings by 50 per cent. The strategy identifies children aged zero to 14 as the number one priority. Swim safety advocate Laurie Lawrence has also continued to make waves on the circuit since launching his program in 1988 with the single goal of preventing drownings. His Kids Alive – Do the Five initiative educates the public on five important steps to reduce the risk of preschool drowning. He also launched Learn to Swim Week, held nationally in late September. This is something taken seriously at Sink or Swim, according to instructor Mark Macdonald. Macdonald, who last year won the Queensland AUSTSWIM Teacher of Swimming and Water Safety Award, says the curriculum takes children outside the confines of the pool and teaches them in real life situations, and also the importance of knowing how to call triple zero. “I conduct a junior lifeguard program and take them to the beach. This gets them familiar in the pool first, and then the

Researchers from the Griffith Institute for Educational Research conducted a survey of the parents of 7000 children aged under five during a three-year period. It proved that children who learn to swim at a young age are reaching developmental milestones earlier than most. In what has been deemed the world’s most comprehensive study into early-years swimming, the 2013 research showed that in addition to achieving physical milestones faster, children also scored better in visual motor skills such as cutting paper and colouring in, and mathematics-related tasks. Performance in general areas of literacy and numeracy were also better. Backing the Australian-based findings are study results released in the UK earlier this year. The Telegraph reported that swimming lessons assisted children in boosting their maths grades. The study, which was conducted by NatCen Social Research, Newcastle University and ASK Research, analysed more than 6400 children.

Kids are pretty smart at a young age and they will climb over it. Clean up the pool area so there are no toys. “The other one is to remember that all bodies of water can be a danger. An esky left at the end of the night with ice in it that melts to water, an infant can climb into it, fall in. “Dams, nappy buckets, ponds. Living here we have got all the waterways with no fences. All the lakes, the rivers that are all within walking distance.” He recommends getting your children into the pool from as young as four or five months, depending on their development. This not only gets them comfortable and happy in the water, but starts the learning

DARK SKY PARK ON COUNCIL AGENDA Our region could get its first dark sky park if the Sunshine Coast Council has its way. These parks, which are typically at high altitude with minimal light pollution and are perfect for clear star gazing, are part of a growing international trend in astro-tourism. The council has identified Howells Knob Lookout, near Maleny, as a potential location for a dark sky park. Environment Portfolio Councillor Jenny McKay says the site is zoned rural, preventing residential development in the foreseeable future and has the closest and best viewing to Brisbane.

There will be summer flight opportunities aplenty on the horizon with more than 65,000 extra chances to fly south. The Sunshine Coast Airport’s domestic airline partners will boost their carrying capacity from November through to March. The additions include 24,200 more seats to and from Sydney and 16,920 on the Melbourne to Sunshine Coast route, as well as the 23,400 seats on Jetstar’s new Adelaide service. “Our growth figures continue to lead the country and that increased demand is being met by the airlines with increased capacity,” general manager Peter Pallot says. Our airport’s growth rate of 14.4 per cent is more than double the next best airport, Launceston in Tasmania.

SWIM STAR SNAGS EIGHT MEDALS IN DARWIN Sunshine Coast teen Emily Dring stood out in a field of 700 competitors at the School National Swimming competition in Darwin recently. The Sunshine Coast Grammar School Year 11 student took home seven gold medals and one silver medal over five days of Olympicstyle competition. Dring powered home to win all her individual events which consisted of 50 metres, 100 metres and 200 metres freestyle. In her 100 metres freestyle event, she swam a personal best time of 56.61, which broke the School Sport Australia record and also resulted in her being awarded Most Outstanding Performance of the Meet.

COOLANGATTA GOLD DREAM FULFILLED There was less than 60 seconds in it, but it was all Campbell Guthrie needed to clinch the under-19s short course race at the Coolangatta Gold. The Alexandra Headland competitor says he has dreamt of winning the title for much of his life. Guthrie finished in a time of three hours, 16 minutes, 11.2 seconds, just under a minute ahead of North Burleigh’s Grant Harris and Noosa’s Bailey Williams. It has been a stellar year for Guthrie, who also won the under-17 taplin relay at The Aussies in April with local teammates.

Hundreds of people flocked to the Sunshine Coast JobShow at the TAFE Queensland East Coast Campus on October 19 to try to secure one of the 700 jobs on offer. Among some of the major locally-based companies were Stellar BPO, Youi and Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Services. Touted as a one-stop shop of current and upcoming job vacancies on the Coast, the event helped to link 170 people with jobs in 2015.

ocal model Monty Thomas will appear at tomorrow’s Sunshine Coast Fashion Festival as Queensland’s first androgynous model ever to grace a catwalk. Thomas will walk as a male model for Myer and then as a female for VaVaVoom Corsetry and international award-winning designer Thang de Hoo. The 26-year-old hairdresser, who goes by the stage name Jess Whoo, leapt at the opportunity when approached by the fashion festival organisers to showcase his creativity and gender-bending aesthetic. “I seized the opportunity to do it not only for a platform for my career, but to make a bit of a statement that progression is something that has to happen and basically someone just needs to be brave enough to go, hey, the world is progressing.” Thomas says he was severely bullied throughout his school life due to his effeminate looks. “I was very flamboyant,” he says. “I’ve been dancing since I was four years old and was bullied because of my interest in dance and the way I look, which is naturally quite feminine. Boys are supposed to look a certain way and girls are supposed to look a certain way and the kids didn’t understand me, and we fear things we don’t understand. “I wasn’t treated very well and it happened from preschool to year 12 and it still happens today. I find it worse here on the Coast, but the thing is, I never bite back. People only know what they’re taught, and that’s why I want to be a model in this fashion festival. It’s teaching people you can have femininity without compromising who you are as a person and it needs to be embraced. “I see it in all these young guys who go to the gym all the time. They’re pumping their muscles and hurting their bodies just to prove their masculinity. My ex-boyfriend was a football player and he committed suicide because he couldn’t handle that he couldn’t be himself in his sport. He was torn between who he loved and what he wanted to do in life.” Thomas grew up in a sheltered Christian family and it initially took them some time to embrace their son’s identity. “They didn’t know how to deal with a gay person because they never really came across them, but they’re supportive now, which is really good. Mum is coming to the festival, which will be really fun.” Thomas says while he was severely bullied at school, he maintained an innate sense of who he was and as harsh as the kids were, they didn’t stop him doing what he wanted to do. He went to the dance room and practised dance during

lunchtimes and saved his pocket money to buy the innovative fashion magazine, Russh. Inspired by the magazine, Thomas taught himself to sew and started making his own wearable art and began winning competitions, while studying dance at the Sunshine Coast Academy of Dance. After graduating he moved to Brisbane and that’s when his interest in drag blossomed. “I was living with a friend from school and she was very open-minded. She loved the LGBT community and kept telling me how pretty I was. One night we put all her hair extensions in my hair, put a hat on me so it looked like my hair, put a dress and some shoes on and she said, ‘oh my god you look like a girl’. My interest in drag stemmed from that.” Due to his dance background, Thomas quickly established a reputation as a highly creative drag queen in Brisbane and has turned the past hurts of being called a girl in a derogatory way, being victimised for being gay or being

called too feminine, into a positive. “The key word that keeps coming up in association to me is androgyny,” he says. “Androgyny is the combination of masculine and feminine characteristics. Androgyny can be found in fashion, gender identity and sexual lifestyle. I associate more around the fashion identity, it’s not really a sexual or gender thing for me. It’s more of a political statement that we need to learn that gender identity is so not what it was in the 50s and we still think that way. “It almost makes me laugh to think we’ve progressed so far in technology, but we’re still saying boys aren’t allowed to wear makeup. Its just baffling to me. There’s an amazing quote: “What is seen as feminine is often nothing more than what is rejected by masculinity, things like crying, showing emotion, dancing, makeup and more. None of these things are inherently feminine, they’re only feminine because society says so and because they’re feminine, men should not do them.”

BUILDING THE WAY FORWARD With a name and boundaries in place, it was time to start marketing the Sunshine Coast as a tourist destination, hailed in 1968 as the next great industry for the region. WORDS: Dot Whittington.

s early as 1968, there were some disputes over whether Bribie Island should be included in this new Sunshine Coast region made up of Landsborough, Maroochy and Noosa Shires. The Maroochy Shire Chairman Eddie De Vere, who had been leading the Sunshine Coast charge, ruled it out: “People are trying lots of angles to get into the Sunshine Coast but we can’t have unwieldy, wandering areas or the name will lose its impact”. By now, tourism was becoming recognised as the next great industry – timber had long since faded, the fruit industry was dependent on rural fluctuations and sugar cane, while still very much viable, would not be enough to sustain a growing region. Besides, there was money to be made, capitalising on the area’s natural beauty and rawness compared to its arch-rival, the glitzy Gold Coast. There was going to be some coastal envy for a few years yet. Amid controversy, De Vere set off in February 1968, for a two-day promotional trip to Sydney and Melbourne to extol the virtues of the new Sunshine Coast: “There are so many fish in the river that you had to stand behind a tree to bait your line.”

It was controversial because the trip was sponsored by Alfred Grant, the big land development company selling the expanding area of Bundilla Lakes behind Mooloolaba. At the same time, the promotional opportunity came at no cost to ratepayers. It was to become the first of many Sunshine Coast tourism delegations. In Melbourne, De Vere was asked in one of dozens of press, radio and television interviews, why the Queensland Tourist Bureau there couldn’t give them any information about the Sunshine Coast. “At this stage they don’t know enough about it,” De Vere had replied. Three years later, in July 1971, there was another delegation heading south. East-West Airlines had made its first direct flight from Sydney a year earlier, and was considering regular flights at a time when “only jackasses and magpies landed at Maroochy Airport (later to become the Sunshine Coast Airport)”. Within a decade, there were enough passengers for the airport to be upgraded to jet standard. Tourism was the region’s new and growing industry.

In October 1897, Henry Smith applied to the Under Secretary of the Post and Telegraph Department in Brisbane to open an office at Razorback. Permission was granted, provided it was at no cost to the department. The name Razorback could not be used because there was already a receiving office of that name and once a new name was selected, it would become the name of the area. Smith’s second choice, Vermont, was also rejected. His third suggestion was that of the small town in Connecticut where his mother lived, Montville. From the Latin “mont” meaning hill or mountain, and “villa”, country house/farm, it was reluctantly accepted with the notation on the reply that the department did not approve of the “Franco-American terminology”.

VISION IMPAIRED SWEDISH STUDENT EXCELS AT USC The University of the Sunshine Coast has long recognised the need to champion equity and diversity. Lars Karlstroem is tapping into the university’s technological adaptability and campus support network to achieve his goal of a Bachelor of Counselling.

SC counselling undergraduate Lars Karlstroem moved from the other side of the world to complete a degree and establish a new home in a region he cannot see. But the independent, affable young Swede just chuckles when asked if he’s doing anything extraordinary: “Well, people keep telling me I’m doing that. I know my family is proud of me, not only because I had the courage to even think about doing this, but because I had the motivation – through many setbacks – to actually continue and be doing well with my courses. “Some people identify themselves with their disability. They say ‘I can’t’ when in reality they’re saying ‘I won’t’. When I do the same, it’s really because I’m not motivated, or inclined to put much energy into it.” Lars uses a positive and solution-based mindset, “to rethink and say, ‘Well, why not? Let’s see if we can make this work.’” He arrived at USC in mid-2014, spurred to return to Australia to study after a memorable Christmas vacation with his brother. He noticed that Australians’ attitude towards someone with a visual impairment was, “Okay, you’re fine by yourself, but if you ask for help we’ll make it possible.” Instructors made it accessible for him to do an introductory dive at the Great Barrier Reef, swim with dolphins, and surf. “I evolved a lot on this vacation and the idea to study abroad was born.” Lars looked at universities in different English-speaking countries and contacted an organisation called Kilroy

Education for help. “One of their options was USC and I found the Bachelor of Counselling program,” he recalls. “It was exactly what I wanted to do.” He admits that the start was a bit overwhelming. “I’d never studied at uni and although I was confident in English, it wasn’t my native language. Fortunately my dad flew down for two weeks to help me get settled. After he left, I initially had to rely on friends to go to the supermarket with me, and find the right share accommodation. But the Sunshine Coast culture is so open, and this uni arranges everything I need. I really like it.” He finds the courses interesting, especially the counselling basics such as listening, responding, paraphrasing and reflecting feelings. “I have an academic assistant, Kaye McGarry, and she helps

me in lectures and tutes, with note-taking and reading aloud text from PowerPoint presentations. I get all my books as PDFs from the uni so my screen reader can translate them into speech. Kaye helps with visual checks of my assignments. For example, my screen reader won’t pick up a misspelling like ‘sighted’ instead of ‘cited’. “I’m allowed to submit assignments in PDF instead of the preferred Word for ease of formatting on my Mac computer. To me, this shows a very individual approach to learning. The uni really wants everyone to succeed.” Lars is impressed by how friendly and helpful people are on campus at Sippy Downs. “It just happened today. I was walking outside D Block and a guy came up beside me and started chatting. He asked if I needed help and I didn’t, though a bit more tactile paving might be beneficial. But since we were heading the same way, it was easier for me to just borrow his arm. It’s not uncommon to hear, ‘Hey mate, how are you doing?’” – Extract from Visions.

MARKETS ENDURE SOME VOLATILITY Mark Davidson is from Ord Minnett in Buderim.

ompany reporting season in August is an important time to assess how profitable companies are and to gauge their ability to grow profits over the coming year. As is typical, the latest season produced a range of outcomes, including a number of recommendation changes. Subsequent to the completion of reporting season, global markets have endured some volatility; albeit September is traditionally a rocky month. The root cause this time is centred on the looming decision of the US Federal Reserve (the Fed) to raise its official cash rate again. The first raising in this tightening cycle was last December, so given its infrequency, markets have become obsessive about the next move. While the Fed aims to clearly telegraph its intentions for monetary policy, investment markets become more erratic as the decision edges closer. One reason for this greater variability relates to the position of bond markets. The primary scenario that has been priced into bond markets is that inflation will remain depressed, bond yields will stay low for longer and that this will leave central banks committed buyers of bonds. At the margin though, as investors ponder the path of Fed policy, there is some speculation that we are on the edge of a shift in bond markets that will lead to a sharper lift in bond yields. This has a direct effect on equity markets given the correlation between bonds and stocks has recently become positive. In other words, prices of both markets are starting to move in tandem. Therefore, any sudden shift in bonds could have consequences for stock markets,

especially those stocks with higher yields that have been bid up strongly as interest rates have fallen. Trading around Fed movements is enlightening. In September, one of the Fed governors in the US, who had been supportive of only a gradual change in interest rates, hinted that sooner ratherthan-later might be appropriate. This put global markets into a tailspin, including Australia’s market. The S&P/ASX 200 Index responded sharply to the comments with a 2.2 per cent fall, the biggest daily drop since the Brexit decision in June. Sectoral performance was most enlightening. The sectors hit the hardest were global cyclicals (mining and energy), and those considered bond proxies (property trusts, utilities and industrials, which contains a number of infrastructure stocks). In relative terms, some of the better performing sectors were the more typical defensive sectors, such as telecommunications and consumer staples. Banks were also better placed, perhaps due to the relief they might gain if interest rates were to pick up more rapidly. The upshot of all this is that one must be aware of developments in this area, particularly in the US. Rising rates can have a negative impact on shares, as we witnessed to our dismay in 1994.

ONE PERFECT DAY

Sami Muirhead reflects on how birthday parties have changed since she was a girl, and tries to pinpoint the moment of her conception.

here seems to be a lot of birthdays this time of year. The birds and the bees are out spreading the pollen for spring, but I think they spread their love dust at the start of the year to ensure October is bursting with newborns. I have recently had a birthday and I am part of a large crew celebrating turning another year older in the 10th month of the year. I have a sneaking suspicion I am a New Year’s Eve baby. I think my parents saw in 1973 with a bang and a baby girl followed later that year. My mother will never confirm or deny my allegations during my inquisitions, but it is a shared joke we have between us. Adding to the humour is the fact that to me, my parents really hate each other. They have not spoken in about 35 years (except for a super awkward moment at my wedding) so the thought of them making a baby is kind of bizarre. And a little gross. You need to speak to each other to procreate I would assume. Maybe not. My dad turned 80 this week. I spent his birthday party looking at him thinking he is starting to look a little older. He still has his razor sharp wit and a sparkle in his eyes, but something has changed. My father is larger than life and a big kid, so this was a big moment of realisation for me. We think our

parents are immortal. At the other end of the scale my middle darling son is turning four next week. I stupidly decided to have a car-themed party. Well, that has aged me about 10 years in one week. Parties are stressful events. Back in my day, you could just play red rover and feed everyone chocolate crackles and cordial and that was a rip snorting party. Not anymore. People serve tofu. And sushi. And alcohol for the parents. Some big time party professionals even have coffee vans for the parents while the little ones get to the party fun. You are expected to have a range of healthy food for the kids to eat and soft drinks are considered the work of the devil. And outsourcing is the new black. So many parties now have hired face painters, jumping castles or magicians. If you don’t hire it, the trend seems to be to hand make everything from organic material. So wish me luck. Our party will not be super flash, but we are having an egg catching competition. And Mum, if you are reading this column, you need to know I have done the maths. A baby born on my birthdate in October would have been conceived on January 2, according to Google. I reckon Google is clearly wrong by 24 hours. Wink wink. Nudge nudge.

he stillness of the Maleny morning was broken last weekend by the rumbling bellows of a male koala. Looking out from the verandah, I spotted a rotund grey and white piebald figure scaling one of the trees along the fenceline. Gathering up the wakeful toddler, we went to the base of the tree, where we both watched fascinated as our visitor plucked handfuls of leaves and perched in a fork, began munching contentedly. Later that same day, with toddler and newborn in tow, my wife and I braved the traffic to head to the north end of the Coast. We stopped in briefly at the Making of Midnight Oil exhibition at the Noosa Regional Gallery. I wandered through the displays, stopping to check out the touring stage set up with stuffed dingo and old water tank. An old poster invited us to the ‘Noosa Aussie Hop’ in 1983, where the Oils performed with Skyhooks, Mental as Anything and the Sunnyboys. The toddler, reaching his boredom threshold, signalled by his efforts to clamber up and execute a stage dive, prompted our removal to the beach. Swinging around the endless roundabouts, seemingly installed to fling unwary visitors toward ‘all other destinations’, we eventually navigated to Noosa National Park. We dismounted, together with all the equipment necessary to sustain two infants, and headed for the water.

Guiding the toddler over the rocks, my eye was caught by a spray of foam off the point. Sporting in the bay was a pod of whales, launching themselves clear of the water and crashing back, throwing up sheets of white water. The display continued for more than an hour, close to shore. The toddler located a natural slide formed by some rocks and shrieked with laughter as he slid in and out of the water, revelling in the foam being pushed periodically into his rockpool by the swells.

“Sporting in the bay was a pod of whales, launching themselves clear of the water…” Walking the length of Hastings Street and then out to the Heads, the toddler marvelled at the acrobatic kite surfers, tumbling through the air before turning to race back toward the North Shore, for a time. A planned detour via one of the ice-cream vendors was called off when we found a little girl lost. As we stood outside the Police Beat (closed on weekends), the frantic father ran up and the family was reunited. Returning home to the Jurassic sounds of koalas in the night, all that remained was this series of fragments which, together, made up a perfect day.

The Pop-Up Book Shop will grab the attention of the Coast’s book lovers this November. This markets-inspired event will see 30 writers who have self-published their books come together to showcase their stories. Founder Mary Barber, from the Tamarind Book Club, says this is a way for self-published writers to promote their work and also for readers to meet the authors in a relaxed space. The shop includes a range of genres from crime, romance, photography and art to children’s books. The Pop-Up Book Shop will be held on November 6 from 10am to 1pm at the Caloundra Power Boat Club. Entry for adults is by gold coin donation for the Buy a Bale campaign. Children are free.

T PREPARE FOR PENSION CUTS More than 300,000 Australians are set to lose their age pension entitlements from January 1, 2017.

ore than 300,000 Australians aged 65 and over who currently received the Age Pension or Part Pension will have their pension cut in 2017, with around 100,000 losing all entitlements. The Australian Government recently introduced changes to the Age Pension’s assets test thresholds, which will take effect on January 1, 2017. The thresholds indicate the value of the assets age pensioners can own (excluding their home) in order to receive the pension. Under the new changes, around 50,000 Australians will be better off, with around 120,000 part-pensioners to receive an added $30 per fortnight. “Many people are unaware of how it will affect them,”says Ryan Oliver, principal adviser at MLC Advice, Buderim. “If you’re a couple who own a home and you have $700,000 in assets outside your residential house that are deemed part of this assessment, your current pension amount would be $19,265. “The new amount under these new rules would be $9,573, so it’s a reduction of $9,692

a year. It’s quite significant and we’re finding a lot of our clients are affected. “We’ve let all our clients know and we’ve sat down and had chats about how they’re affected and if there’s anything we can do to lessen the effects. “There’s a couple of things we can do but it’s really dependent on their individual situation,” he says. “It depends on the age of the spouse, there’s a whole range of things we can do but it really depends on their goals and personal situations.” As part of the new rules, the taper rate is being doubled from $1.50 for every $1000 over the assets test threshold to $3 for every $1000 over the assets test threshold. So the threshold has been reduced and the taper rate doubled and the two go hand-in-hand. While pensioners will still have their seniors cards for discounts, these changes will result in many seniors losing their cash flow and Oliver suggests planning ahead. “You want to be aware of how it’s going to affect you so it doesn’t surprise you. “The question is, how do you make up for that loss in cash flow?”

DOWNSIZE IN COMFORT

here is no typical home owner in Nature’s Edge Buderim. Everyone has a unique story that has brought them to this part of the world, and this unique lifestyle community. Norman and Patricia moved into Nature’s Edge Buderim in December 2015. Patricia is from British Columbia, Canada. Norm is from Albany in Western Australia. There are lovely breezes, the birds and the rainforest. “It’s an easy walk to the local shops and we love the security and friendships we have made – we love it here.”

Gardening guru Graham Ross kicked off the festival with sold out shows on the Sunshine Coast and in Brisbane, bringing his love for all things horticultural to the two audiences. “Y

ou’re over the speed limit,” says the female voice from beside me. It took me by surprise, and not just because I didn’t realise my speed had crept up so quickly.

My surprise was mainly because I was the only person in the vehicle at the time. This voice came from the car itself – Mazda’s very impressive new seven-seat SUV, the CX-9. Surely, the ultimate family car. Not only

can it swallow up seven passengers and their cargo – but it can actually nag….I mean, remind you that you’re going too fast. There really was no excuse, of course. My speed was, after all, being beamed into my field of vision by the clever head-up

display that’s also standard kit on upmarket models of this handsome new wagon. Mazda calls these new safety technologies iACTIVESENSE – a clumsy name but an impressive array of safety equipment standard across the CX-9 range. That package includes blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert and a smart city-braking package that applies the brakes when it senses a potential collision. An additional array of safety measures – including that speed warning alert plus lane-keeping assist and adaptive headlamps – comes in higher-spec models of Mazda’s recently relaunched family machine. Mazda tags it as an SUV but really, the CX-9, even in all-wheel-drive form, is not ever likely to be used for anything more challenging than a steep driveway. It’s a family wagon – and a good one at that. In size and price, the CX-9 becomes the new flagship of the Mazda range – and it brings an appropriate level of style and sophistication to the task. After all, flying the corporate flag for Japan’s most progressive marque brings with it some heavy expectations. And to be honest, the CX-9 delivers in just about every department. MOTORING <from previous page bar across the spectrum. Mechanically, it replaces the previous V6 with a more economical, but still powerful and responsive turbocharged four-cylinder. The 2.5-litre SkyACTIVE engine, found in normally-aspirated form elsewhere in the Mazda range, has been tuned to deliver 170 kilowatts and a useful 420Nm NM of torque in the CX-9. It’s a combination that gives the big Mazda surprising responsiveness off the line and also for mid-range acceleration. The engine rarely seems laboured – although I must admit we didn’t try it with all seats in use. But with five adults on board its performance remained sharp and zippy. It drives through a six-speed automatic that’s just as unobtrusive and smooth as the engine. Once criticised for the noise and harshness of its vehicles, Mazda has clearly made this a focus and the CX-9 exemplifies that improvement. It is remarkably quiet – particularly when hurtling down the highway – with the hush emphasised by the smooth ride. The CX-9 is available in four basic trim levels with a broad range of prices. The CX-9 Sport opens the batting at $42,490, the Touring follows at $48,990 – with a step up to the GT ($57,390) and flagship Azami ($59,390).

We drove the Azami in front-wheel-drive form – if you opt for the all-wheel-drive version you can add another $4000 to the price and apart from added all-weather grip, it’s a spend you could do without. The big Mazda is amply roomy for a full-sized family, with five seats in normal configuration and an additional two for emergency use – or for accommodating the smallest members of any family. Putting those seats into action is a very simple, one-hand operation – accessed from beneath the shelter of the rear tailgate. When they’re in use there’s probably enough remaining cargo space for the family’s weekly grocery shop. When they’re laid flat it becomes a very spacious cargocarrier indeed.

While the previous CX-9 had a somewhat bulky look about it, this new model has developed a more athletic appearance, courtesy of Mazda’s signature Kodo design language. Inside, too, the styling is impressive – right down to gorgeous touches such as the way the airconditioning vents on the dash ingeniously merge with the door trim. It just looks like they’ve put extra thought and extra effort into every aspect of this machine. With its modest starting price and class-leading fuel-efficiency, the CX-9 will command the interest of any family craving oodles of space without surrendering all pretense of driving enjoyment. At the higher end of the price scale the

added features, refinement and finish magnified those qualities. It might even be enough to satisfy that little voice inside the cabin.

MAZDA CX-9 AZAMI HOW BIG? Seriously so. While its external dimensions are disguised by its slinky lines, the cockpit feels airy and spacious. We had no trouble accommodating five adults and the two rear seats are ample for the smaller folk when required.

HOW FAST? It’s not designed to be a sporty conveyance but we found the big Mazda pleasingly nimble and responsive. It will reach the speed limit in quick time and there’s ample mid-range punch for overtaking.

HOW THIRSTY? It’s lighter on the fuel than its predecessor, thanks to an efficient four-cylinder, turbocharged engine and six-speed auto. Mazda’s i-Stop technology ensures no fuel is wasted while stationary – allowing a frugal average of 8.4L/100km (8.8L/100km for all-wheel-drive models).

HOW MUCH? Prices start from just over $40-grand for the most basic model, called the Sport. Our test machine, with all the bells and whistles, will set you back about $60k plus onroads.

AGENT PROFILE My Property Preview had a chat with Glennis Schindler from Next Property Group. What was your very first job? My first job was as a junior sales secretary with George Wilson & Sons Real Estate in Maroochydore. What was your favourite place on the Sunshine Coast? I love all of our beaches. I find walking along the walking tracks and taking in the scenery is very therapeutic. Describe your perfect day? Walking along the beach, or on the Alex to Mooloolaba track. Stopping for coffee with friends and then heading to work, negotiating a property and achieving a really great price for one of my sellers. What is the best holiday you have ever had? I have been fortunate to have some wonderful holidays, but seven weeks in Europe last year was an absolute highlight. From sitting next to Elton John having lunch in Portofino to the history of the Roman ruins. What are you reading now? The tragic death of Alison Baden-Clay. How long have you worked in the real estate business and what attracted you to it in the first instance? I started my career as a junior sales secretary in a large Maroochydore agency where my father worked. He organised me a job in the agency. I proceeded into sales in 1992 and obtained my principal’s licence in 1995 then went onto purchase my own office in 1997. Tell us about the first property you sold: I remember it clearly. It was late 1992 and my husband’s friend rang and said he wanted to purchase an investment property but he was suspicious of real estate agents. I showed him numerous properties and he purchased a new unit in Arwen Street, Maroochydore. I then went on to sell three out of the four units in the complex. What was your most recent sale? I recently auctioned unit 218/120 Alexandra Parade. My seller followed my suggestion on marketing which was an internet package and print advertising for four weeks in My Weekly Preview. This resulted in 23 inspections, four active buyers, two bidding at auction, and it selling under the hammer. Everyone was excited and it made me realise why I still do this job. What do you love most about your job? Helping people. To help the seller move on to their next dream and help the buyer get excited about the purchase of their new property is such a buzz. Being with like-minded people who love to laugh and who are motivated in a positive way.

What is the most difficult thing about your job? Telling sellers that the market will not pay the high price they think it is worth. What’s best – auction or private treaty? I now feel auction is the best, because it has a time frame, we know we have got the best price for our seller, and the certainty of the sale proceeding. How have you seen the property market change in the past 12 months? We are now experiencing a lot more enquiry due to the new hospital and the Maroochydore CBD development. How do you see it changing in the next 12 months? With these developments taking shape and attractive interest rates, buyer activity will certainly increase.

TIP FOR BUYERS: Meet with a bank or broker to get yourself into a position to purchase, as the properties are being sold very quickly. A seller will take the strongest offer so be a step ahead.

TIP FOR SELLERS: Feel comfortable with your agent. Listen to their suggested marketing, as they have worked hard to obtain the most cost effective way to achieve the best price in the shortest time frame.

The strength of the Sunshine Coast’s building industry was apparent at the Master Builders Queensland Housing and Construction Awards, with eight awards linked to projects within the region. ESTUARY: Mangrove jack are showing up on the high tides with Eudlo, Petrie and Coolum Creeks returning quality fish on live bait and rattling lures. Flathead up to 85cm on the drift past the cod hole area jigging plastics. Remember, flathead sized above 75cm must be returned to the water as these are breeding. Trevally and tailor at Cotton Tree. SURF: Tailor are biting just on dusk at Pincushion with WA pillies the best. Sand whiting in the low tide gutters from Maroochy bar to Alex. A few bream taking pilly pieces off the Mooloolah rock walls. OFFSHORE: When conditions allow, the close in reefs are working well for mixed reef fish with the lead up to the full moon bringing in the bait. Spotty mackerel are working the bait, but in the last week they have been especially shy, so anchor and berley for the best results. FRESHWATER: Lake Baroon is returning bass along the weed edges. Borumba Dam is also firing for bass and golden perch on either live shrimps or deep diving lures with some anglers nailing fish just as they push off from the boat ramp. Don’t forget your impoundment licence.

A NEW CANDIDATE FOR PRESIDENT Richard O’Leary says it’s time for a woman to lead the US, but it’s not who you think.

f the continuing Trump circus has taught us anything, it’s that this is the right time for the most powerful nation in the world to elect a woman as its president. A woman who is smart. A woman with class. A woman with passion. A woman with integrity. A woman with a quiet dignity. A woman who knows the difference between right and wrong. A woman with the widespread respect of the American population. Now being a republican in the Australian context of the word (one who thinks we should do away with the monarchy), I’m not in favour of anything that hints at dynastic rule, but on this occasion I’m willing to make an exception. Of course I am talking about… Michelle Obama. Her response to the release of the video of Trump boasting about sexually

assaulting women, will go down as one of the great speeches of the modern political era. I have written many political speeches, and seen many more delivered, so I’d like to think I’m a pretty tough judge – but I was totally mesmerised by her performance. Not only what she was saying, but how she

“No woman deserves to be treated this way — none of us deserves this kind of abuse. “I can’t believe that I’m saying that a candidate for President of the United States has bragged about sexually assaulting women. “I feel it so personally. It’s like that sick, sinking feeling you get when you’re walking down the street minding your own business and some guy yells out vulgar words about your body, or when you see that guy at work that stands just a little too close, stares a little too long so you feel uncomfortable in your own skin. “We simply cannot endure this, or expose our children to this any longer — not for another minute, and let alone for four years. “This has got to stop right now.” Imagine if Michelle Obama was a candidate… now that could make America great again. rolearylastword@gmail.com
