aul Kelly is one of many stars who has performed at the Caloundra Music Festival, and the chorus from one of his most popular songs probably best sums up the progress of the event over the past 10 years: “From little things big things grow”. Starting with just 22 bands on two stages and attracting 5500 people – the region’s signature musical extravaganza this weekend is expected to draw 36,000 people, who will get the chance to see 80 bands on five stages. In this edition we take a look at the first decade of the CMF. Also this week you get to meet a man who has drawn art and music together for a unique local exhibition, have a quick chat with one of the region’s best known radio presenters and hit the road to experience all the glories of glamping. The day I knocked on the door at ABC Sunshine Coast and the news editor agreed to let me do a trial. I’d been thinking for a couple of years about trying to get into radio. As soon as I knocked on the radio door, it opened for me, and I knew straight away that I’d found my true career.

Ten years ago the Caloundra Music Festival started from scratch, with high hopes and a determination to succeed. A decade later and it has become a must-see on the festival circuit and this weekend’s event is expected to attract more than 36,000 people. To mark this milestone year, My Weekly Preview has taken a trip back in time to re-live the big moments with festival director, Richie Eyles.

DIARY OF A DECADE

ichie Eyles has been organising the Caloundra Music Festival from day one – so we asked him to take My Weekly Preview readers on a trip back in time to revisit all the memorable moments of the iconic event over the past 10 years – this is his diary of a decade.
2007 • Obviously memorable as the first event, we had no real identity or personality as a festival. • With a first festival anything can happen – so we were not sure what we were prepared for or getting into. • 2007 featured an interesting and electric line-up of iconic Australian bands e.g. Jimmy Barnes, Ross Wilson, Daryl

Braithwaite, Mental as Anything, James Blundell. • We started our longstanding relationship with New Orleans and brought out Jon Cleary and Absolute Monster Gentlemen to perform. • Jon went swimming though not between the flags and almost drowned. Luckily for him and the festival, he was saved by some local lifeguards and then went on to give a great performance (in front of the lifeguards who saved him).
2008 • In 2008 we upped the ante with Pete Murray and the Whitlams. • We were still finding our feet, but buoyed on by the success of the first event.
• Daryl Braithwaite enjoyed the first festival so much, he came back to headline for a second time.
2009 • Great performances by Augie March and Hoodoo Gurus. • Slowly starting to develop a festival personality and identity.
2010 • One of the most memorable years. • We had snared Powderfinger as the headliners, who then announced they were going on their farewell tour. • The tickets for the festival sold out in a day,
which made us start thinking about how big we could grow. • To go from a smallish festival to something this big, we’d never considered the concept of selling out. • It was also memorable in that the festival went on in near cyclonic conditions, which presented a new set of challenges, not faced before. • By the end we had to shut the festival and move the remaining acts to the pub across the road. • Some of the more lucky punters who stayed, got to see Paul Kelly in a more intimate pub venue.
2011 • Hard one to follow after the success of myweeklypreview.com.au

FAST FACTS • The crowds loved the Baby Animals. • Wolfmother went off – we had them in a smaller tent which was packed and had a great energy and vibe. • John Butler came back and gave a solo performance, as his bass player had broken his arm. It was one of his best performances at CMF by far. • Tina Arena was an absolute pleasure to work with and partied on till the wee hours of the morning. • Daryl Braitwaite had firmly established himself as a cult CMF figure popular across all ages groups. • Even teenagers love him – as the man who does the horse song.

• Aggregate attendance year one was 5500, anticipated aggregate attendance in 2016 is anticipated to be 36,000-plus • Almost 180,000 music lovers have enjoyed nine festivals • Year one featured 22 bands on two stages, year 10 will feature 80 bands on five stages • 460 bands performed in the past 10 years • 54 have performed at two or more festivals • Daryl Braithwaite, Blue King Brown, Lisa Hunt and Melbourne Ska Orchestra have all graced the stage at four festivals • Headline acts from year one included Jimmy Barnes, Richard Clapton and Mental as Anything • Headline Acts in 2016 include Michael Franti and Spearhead, Guy Sebastian, The Cat Empire, Icehouse and Kate Miller-Heidke • In 2010 the festival secured Powderfinger on their farewell tour and they performed in near cyclonic conditions • CMF has featured some of Australia’s biggest and best acts over the past 10 years, e.g. Powderfinger, John Butler Trio, Wolfmother, Empire of the Sun, Xavier Rudd, Boy and Bear, Angus and Julia Stone, The Cat Empire, The Living End, Eskimo Joe, Missy Higgins, Paul Kelly, Jimmy Barnes and many more • Over the past 10 years, CMF has developed a relationship with the city of New Orleans and has featured many of her most famous musicians including Alan Toussaint, Jon Cleary, Dumpstphunk, Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Trombone Shorty, Royal Southern Brotherhood, George Porter and Galactic, just to name a few • Other international acts have included Tower Of Power, Earth, Wind and Fire, JJ Grey and Mofro, Roy Ayers, The Baseballs, Katchafire, Donavon Frankenreiter, Sierra Leonie Refugee Allstars, Babylon Circus, Andrew Strong and many others • In 2016, CMF is expected to contribute $10 million to the local economy • Our volunteer team has grown from a tiny group of 50 in 2007 to over 550 in 2016.
2015 • In 2015 we had our first foray into hip hop with AllDay and Thundamentals – the kids loved it and they suited our eclectic line-up. • Xavier Rudd came back with his big band and it was an amazing highlight performance. • Ben Lee performed and declared it was the best festival he ever gigged at.

2010 and the Powderfinger performance, but we tried to up the ante with some big acts. • We were able to snare Empire of the Sun, which was a new style of music for the festival. • We were also certainly in a rebuilding phase after the Powderfinger year. • We really started to hone our personality and firmly decided that we were eclectic and didn’t necessarily need to rely on big names to sell tickets. • There was a strong international contingent in 2011, Jon Cleary came back and we brought out Tower of Power for the first time (who are back again this year).
• We had really found our feet by this stage and had started to build on our brand personality. • John Butler first became associated with the festival, which was great because people liked him and he liked us. • We’d say that 2012 was the best CMF yet. Best line-up, amazing atmosphere, great weather, good vibe. Great year. Guy Sebastian
2013
The Jezabels
• The performance from Earth Wind and Fire is a highlight in terms of all of the acts we’ve had. • The Baseballs from Germany were brilliant. • Great to have Xavier Rudd come back – and he gave a great performance. He is another really iconic act that suits CMF – like John Butler.
2014 • By this stage we were building the crowds and festival by about 40 per cent year on year.

10 LOCALS WIN HACKERS AWARDS Local hackers have shared in $3000 of prizes from the 2016 GovHack competition that aims to uncover new digital products and services that can benefit the community. Sunshine Coast creative technologist Mic Black won the Spirit of GovHack award, and took out the Spirit of GovHack Queensland State Title for creating the random idea generator. Other winners included Dr Mark Utting, Michael Conolly, and Lin Liu who took out the Sustainability category, with their device for the elderly and disabled to make it easier to engage people and make them feel less isolated. A total of 10 Coast people were recognised at the awards.
$90,000 FREE VACCINES Pregnant women in the Sunshine Coast region are being encouraged to get vaccinated against whooping cough. The vaccine, which is free for women in their third trimester, can protect newborn babies against whooping cough until they can receive their first immunisation at six weeks. There have been more than 25,000 notifications of whooping cough since the start of 2011 and six Queensland babies died from whooping cough between 2000 and 2015. Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service’s Dr Rosie Muller says there is an annual average of 469 cases of the illness on the Coast. Visit qld.gov.au/vaccinate.
The team behind the Restart in a Safe Environment initiative are seeking help to raise $90,000 in 90 days. COULD WE STAGE THE OLYMPICS? Mayor Mark Jamieson has welcomed the decision by the Council of Mayors South East Queensland to proceed with a feasibility study into a possible 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games bid for the region. The feasibility study will include a long-term, region-wide People Mass Movement study; a detailed analysis of current sporting and performing arts venues and future needs; and a full Olympic feasibility study. “These studies will deliver highly valuable information and insights that could underpin future planning and decision making,’’ he says. The council has committed more than $214,000 to the feasibility study process.

James Colquhoun from Food Matters has some healthy swaps for the decadent treats we love to indulge in.
O
ne-third of Australians eat too much junk food, with a nationwide survey confirming our eating habits are well below par. Just one per cent of people are avoiding junk food, according to the 2016 CSIRO Healthy Diet Score report. “We find that there is often a tendency to under-report on certain types of food, so in all likelihood that figure is even higher,” says Professor Manny Noakes. The CSIRO report showed that construction workers were among those with the poorest diets, while public servants, real estate agents and health industry workers reported some of the healthiest eating patterns.
Women also have better nutritional levels than men. Researchers at the CSIRO canvassed the dietary habits of more than 86,500 adults across the country over a 12-month period and found four out of five Australians have a below par diet. Overall the nation was awarded a diet score of 59 out of 100. The closest we get to meeting Australian Dietary Guidelines is the fruit food group where 49 per cent of respondents meet the recommended intake. Prof Noakes says Australia has an image of being fit and healthy but this is not so and people need to act now to improve their diets to better fight the battle against obesity and type 2 diabetes. “If we can raise our collective score by just over 10 points, we help Australia mitigate against the growing rates of obesity and lifestyle diseases such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes and a third of all cancers,” Professor Noakes says. “All people need to do is halve the bad and double the good. In other words, halve the amount of discretionary food you eat and double your vegetable intake.” AAP

ere is the last of my series on healthy substitutes for much loved but unhealthy foods: Milk chocolate: It takes 13 minutes of skipping to burn off the calories from a 40-gram bar. Healthy swap: Choose quality over quantity and throw in some extra goodness. Gently heat a small amount of raw vegan dark chocolate until just melted, then dip a fresh strawberry in the chocolate mix until the strawberry is 50 per cent submerged. Set the strawberries aside on a tray for the chocolate to cool, then enjoy. Berry chocolate bliss. McDonald’s Big Mac: It takes 80 minutes of moderate exercise on an elliptical trainer to burn off the calories from a Big Mac. Healthy swap: If you really love eating burgers, why not make some healthier versions yourself? Choose a gluten-free bun. Make a veggie patty or use lean mince (ground beef) from grass-fed, free-range sources. Hold the cheese or opt for an organic, free-range source. Pack your burger bun with heaps of extra salad.
Buffalo Wings – It takes 80 minutes of moderate rowing to burn off the calories from 10 of these deep-fried chicken wings. Healthy swap: Use organic chicken thighs instead of chicken wings. Chicken thighs are succulent, tender and a much healthier cut of meat. Make your own marinades using freshly ground spices. Lightly pan fry or oven roast the chicken thighs and coat the thigh fillets in some gluten-free breadcrumbs or light batter before cooking. Banana Split – You’d have to do 90 minutes of indoor bowling to work off the calories from a banana split. Healthy swap: Use half a large banana or a small lady finger. Add a small scoop of dairy free ice-cream, or plain organic yogurt, with a dash of maple syrup. Drizzle in a small amount of fair trade dark chocolate and scatter a small quantity of chopped, activated nuts over the top.

CAMPING IN STYLE
A glamping weekend blends back-to-nature relaxation with the luxury of creature comforts.
I
am, by and large, a happy camper. I spent my formative years chasing wild deer away from open tins of baked beans; wading through streams in hopes of encountering leeches; and chasing the dream that is successfully locking one’s elder sister inside a dome tent using nothing more than a hair elastic. Not so my beloved, whose concept of a back-to-nature experience involves swapping his morning Weet-Bix for granola. And so it is in the spirit of compromise that we pack ourselves into our humble Yaris for a decidedly on-road adventure. It will be our first weekend away in almost two years, and our last before we are due to wed in the spring. We could use a holiday. We are bound for the Thou Walla Sunset Retreat at Soldiers Point, Port Stephens. Less than three hours’ drive north of Sydney, it is one of a growing number of glamping destinations popping up along the NSW coast. Thou walla – pronounced ‘dha walla’ – is a Worimi word meaning “meeting or gathering place”. The Worimi people have lived in and around this area for centuries, and only a few weeks before our stay, the State Government declares almost six hectares of land at Soldiers Point an official Aboriginal place, in recognition of its special significance to the
Worimi community. Somewhere between a campsite and a laid-back seaside resort, Thou Walla offers 10 safari tents set amongst lush native gardens and promises an escape from the city for couples who don’t know their pegs from their poles. There are also one- and two-bedroom villas and cottages on offer for those unwilling to go full canvas. Our tent is perfectly positioned. I’ve barely set down my overnight bag but with one look at the view – our flyscreen ‘windows’ look directly out onto the marina and the water beyond – I’m ready to go exploring. My fiance, who has already kicked off his shoes and settled in on the massive daybed on our private timber deck for a spot of Candy Crush, needs a little more convincing. I hustle him away from the tent and we meander down to a nearby wooden pier to watch the sun set over the Karuah River and dangle our feet over the edge in silent contemplation. It is the kind of peace I’ve rarely found outside midsummer trips to far-flung beaches and it is broken only by the sound of my partner’s stomach rumbling – a reminder we have a dinner reservation. We make our way to The Point, which sits atop the marina just footsteps away from Thou Walla, and could hold its own alongside
Sydney’s waterside dining offerings. One hundred-and-eighty-degree views of the water compete for our attention with the food itself. The Sea Breeze cocktail is sweet but not saccharine, and the Tasmanian salmon melts in my mouth. My fiance finishes his cannelloni – baked eggplant, capsicum, spinach, pine nut and fetta in a white miso sauce – and then eyes his empty plate with a look I fear signals he is about to lick it. I hiss at him that I still have time to call off the wedding and he wordlessly pushes it away. By the time we have polished off dessert – a buttery rhubarb and apple crumble – we are so overstuffed that it’s all we can manage to stagger back up to our tent and fall into our king-sized bed. Between the fireplace and the flat-screen TV, it’s easy to forget we’re supposed to be roughing it. But a whiff of the compost toilet in our ensuite is enough to jog my memory, and the birdcall that cuts through the thin walls of our tent takes me straight back to childhood trips out bush. And in the morning I wake to find fiance back on our deck, looking out across the river, with nary a smartphone in sight.

WHERE ART MEETS MUSIC Barrie Morrisson mixes art with music and has crossed paths with the rich and famous in a career that has taken a long and winding road.
H
ow Caloundra’s Barrie Morrison came to be in possession of Elton John’s glasses is a long story. The co-owner of Holloway Gallery at Moffat Beach collects music memorabilia and is exhibiting some fascinating pieces during October to coincide with the Caloundra Music Festival. You can try on Elton’s groovy glasses, read the lyrics to LA Woman handwritten in Jim Morrison’s poetic scrawl, and see drum pads signed by the drummers of the Rolling Stones, Deep Purple, KISS and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. The story of how such a collection came to find a home on the Coast fits into place when you chat to Morrison, who is connected to some of the greatest musicians in history. A bass guitarist and “bad piano” player, he ventured to Vietnam as a 17-year-old to play for the troops in his band Xanadu. “My brother was the drummer, my sister was the singer and we had two Aussie friends,” he says. “We went to Vietnam for seven months in 1971 to entertain the American troops. We played pop music, straight up what was current, songs like We Gotta Get Out of this Place, everything the Americans wanted to hear.” They lived in Bangkok for 18 months, performing on TV shows and sending their music to potential record labels. To their delight, Maurice Gibb from the Bee Gees signed them up and at the tender age of 18, Morrisson found himself living in London playing music. Then in 1974, he and his bandmates opened one of the first budget multi-track recording studios in the country. “I spent ten years in the UK in the music business and we had a lot of famous bands doing their demos in our studio,” Morrisson says. “In those days, opening a recording studio was a hard thing to do – it was a big deal. There were lots of budget recording studios but we were only the second to do a budget multi track – or 16-track studio.

He used to come down, he grew up in Stoke Newington where our studio was. All the fans would be outside and he’d get them to wash his Rolls Royce. “The chap we owned the studio with, who remains a friend to this day, his parents were Elton John’s housekeepers for 20 years. Martin has the most phenomenal collection of Elton John memorabilia. Elton never bought a shirt – he would buy 10 shirts if he liked that shirt, all Versaces. Martin has a collection of his

glasses, so I asked him if I could have a pair; they’re multi-coloured camouflage, very ‘70s and very cool. I also have a pair of Elton’s trousers, which are the famous Eton College woollen pin stripe trousers.
“I never met Elton but through this friend Martin, I got some wonderful stories. He’s had a lot of flak in the media over the years, but god his generosity was ridiculous.” Morrison says while England was a music hub in the ‘60s, in the ‘70s the music scene was wilder in Australia than it was in London. But then along came the Sex Pistols and changed everything. “We recorded the Sex Pistols,” he says. “We recorded Anarchy in the UK and God Save the Queen in our studio. Malcolm McLaren was the manager, they were just pimply kids. He was clever, he was such an out there sort of guy so I can remember him more. The punk thing was a movement that was happening and I was thinking, this is horrible. It wasn’t about music, it was about fashion and London was always about that. It was society saying, let’s get back to the garage and make music.” It’s clear Morrisson could talk about music all day and music fans can hear his stories in person at the Holloway Gallery during October’s ‘music month’ exhibition, where it’s not only music memorabilia on display, but also music inspired artwork, such as Anar Higgins’ melting guitars. “Anar’s stuff, it is what the gallery is about,” Morrisson says. “I don’t want to look at art and say, I could have done that. I’d love to think it’s artistically clever and Anar’s guitars certainly are. You think, woah, that’s really well done and it fits into eveything we’ve done. “The tie-in of music and art is a fabulous thing. There’s so many artists who like music and so many musicians who don’t try their hand at art. Ronnie Wood from the Rolling Stones, Bowie, McCartney, they were all very much into art.” Holloway Gallery was established by Morrisson’s partner Annie Holloway and represents artists from Spain, USA, Russia, the UK, Japan and South Africa, as well as selected Australian and local artists.

lle Macpherson parents like a boss when it comes to manners and discipline. The 52-year-old mum of two has told the media she makes her sons send a handwritten thank-you note whenever they receive a gift from a family or friend. And if they do not conform to this rule within 24 hours, the gift is confiscated. And when you think it cannot get any better, Elle added the present is then given to charity. On top of that, she runs a business empire, has a successful TV career and seems to have a secret stash to the Elixir of Youth. At first I was in total awe of Elle’s thank-you note policy. Elle’s sons (Flynn, 18 and Cy, 13) could easily be rich, good looking kids who are spoilt little brats. But then I thought this thank-you note policy through. It is a wobbly platform to want to stand on and deliver. When I had only one child I am pretty sure I did keep up to date with thank-yous and phoning relatives on birthdays. Then child number two came along and we got busier. Then child three came along and the house is a mess and I’m lucky if I remember to wash the kid’s uniforms for school the next day, feed the dogs, rock up to work with brushed hair. I am not sure I can enforce handwritten thank-you notes. A sad but realistic fact of
life at the moment. And not just a cop out when you have multiple kids. I could start with sending thank-you notes for my four-year-old son’s gifts he was showered with when he was born. Did I mention he is four? I actually printed photos of his little newborn chubby face and even wrote on each card, but then never got over the finish line that is taking them to the post office and posting them. Fail. They sat in my car for about one year and in the end I got so sick of feeling guilty every time I looked at them I threw them in the bin on my way to grabbing a takeaway coffee. I do love the fact that Elle insists on handwritten notes. A recent study by Deakin University showed over one-third of Aussies never write about personal thoughts, goals or feelings. I do not need a survey to know we are all writing less and less. I still receive a handwritten note from my father every few weeks. He has beautiful penmanship and writes from the his heart with big bold words flowing across the pages like music. He uses stickers and draws little pictures on the envelopes. And he always puts actual stamps on the lovingly created masterpieces. Those letters are treasures and when one is sitting on my desk for me to open, my soul sings with joy. Not even Elle can top that one.

often wonder how it is these days that, with a 24-hour news cycle, social media and more access to information than at any other time in our history, we are still completely missing the point on so many issues. Economically and socially, common sense seems in such short supply that it has become decidedly uncommon. The easiest, most efficient and most positive solutions are being ignored, compromised or watered down. At our local school, the community has been lobbying multiple agencies for a pedestrian crossing on a busy intersection which is used twice daily by dozens of children. While everyone agrees the solution is the right one, rather than take immediate steps to remedy, there has been a constant shuffling of responsibilities, papers and jurisdictions. Will it take child being seriously injured to get action? Have you tried understanding how you can get the NBN to your house? After billions and billions of investment dollars, the last few metres of connection is about as intuitive as assembling Ikea furniture. We don’t have a common sense roll-out plan with an outcome in mind. A major road in one of our hinterland towns doesn’t yet join in the middle. There is good intent to make the connection but construction estimates have blown out significantly. Rather than find a way to deliver the outcome for the town, we are applying process, rules and complexity – so
the road won’t get built any time soon. Then there is an example I heard recently where a widow has taken two years, and several letters to the CEO of a big four bank, to get her deceased husband’s name removed from statements and other documentation. Two years. Any finally, there is the furore over the recent non-compliance of a high rise development in Mooloolaba. Sure, planning regulations are there for a reason and there should be penalties for those who flaunt
“Economically and socially, common sense seems in short supply” them, but a degree of common sense is required to continue to encourage investment, which brings jobs and modern accommodation here. Mark Twain once said: “We need to stop calling it common sense. This assumes that it is common and everyone has it. We need to start calling it un-common sense because so few people seem to have it.” Our plan for the region is fantastic but we have to execute many things better. Let’s stop using excuses, fear, laziness and complexity to decide the way forward. Let’s get some outcomes.

A showcase of new AI (artificial intelligence) developments is the focus of the GPU Technology Conference (GTC) which has started in Taipei. NVIDIA CEO Jen-Hsun Huang delivered presentations on Wednesday, which included demonstrating such AI applications as self-driving cars and 3D virtual reality glasses. Huang played a video of the BB8 self-driving car in the United States, which partly included images from the perspective of the electronic eye inside the vehicle that uses NVIDIA’s AI technology. The video shows the system’s initially flawed driving but then “after 3,000 miles of learning” a passenger is able to play with his mobile phone while the car drives faultlessly along roads and highways. Huang also demonstrated the HTC VR glasses showing the inside of an office, and explained that this technology can be used both for gaming and engineering purposes. The GPU Taipei conference is one of eight GTC events scheduled across Asia, Australia and the United States running through to early December. AAP

MILESTONE AT SOLAR FARM There’s plenty of progress happening at our Sunshine Coast Solar Farm, with the first solar panel table about to be lifted into place and secured. When the 15-megawatt (MV) solar farm is complete, Sunshine Coast Council will become Australia’s first local government to offset 100 per cent of its electricity consumption from clean energy across all its facilities and operations. The solar farm will see council proactively take control of our electricity supply to combat rising electricity costs, which are, on average, 14 per cent higher in Queensland compared to last financial year. Located at Valdora, west of Coolum, the solar farm will deliver $22 million in savings, after costs, for our ratepayers over the next 30 years and will be instrumental in helping our region transition to clean energy economy. If the weather is favourable, all of the almost 60,000 solar panels should be up by Christmas. The solar farm is expected to be operational by mid-2017.
OUR RUBBISH REVOLUTION It’s a waste collection system that has never been seen in Australia – and it’s coming to our region. The Sunshine Coast has again taken a nation leading position by unveiling Australia’s first, high-tech, automated waste collection system for a CBD, to be installed in the new Maroochydore City Centre. Rather than using wheelie bins, waste will be transported from commercial buildings and apartments at up to 70kmh through a 6.5km system of underground vacuum pipes located beneath Australia’s newest city centre. Mayor Mark Jamieson said the waste system, which will be installed in stages over the coming decade, would help to make the 53-hectare Maroochydore City Centre one of the cleanest and greenest cities in the country. When the contract for the system was signed last week, it prompted enormous media coverage across Australia, shining a
spotlight on the country’s only greenfield CBD site. Mayor Jamieson is sure other cities and major urban projects will soon be following in our footsteps. The rubbish revolution means that city workers and residents will never have to walk past rows of wheelie bins or be woken early by noisy garbage trucks in the Maroochydore City Centre. Common aspects of waste collection such as odours and vermin will be avoided, and the costs of daily street cleaning will be reduced. New urban developments in Stockholm, Seoul, Barcelona, London, Singapore and Beijing have all utilised the Swedish-designed Envac waste collection system – but no Australian city has done so – until now. uperannuation changes were a cornerstone of the recently announced 2016/2017 Federal Budget. Unfortunately too many of the proposed changes were not well received. As a result the Government has recently responded to the negative feedback by announcing amendments to the proposed reforms. In this week’s article I will highlight the new changes and the opportunities that remain in place for the remainder of this financial year. It is important to note that the changes to superannuation laws are just proposals at this stage. They will need to be passed
into legislation before they can be acted upon. The non-concessional contribution (NCC) limit is proposed to reduce to $100,000 per annum from July 1, 2017 provided the member’s balance is below $1.6 million as at June 30 of the preceding financial year. While this is a reduction from the current annual limit of $180,000 it is much better than the original Budget proposal. Persons aged under 65 will be able to continue using the three year bring forward rule.

Also from this date you may able to make a CC above the annual limit where you have not fully utilised the CC limit in previous financial years. Not all of the most recent proposals are an improvement. The Budget proposal to remove the ‘Work Test’ for individuals aged 65 to 74 has unfortunately been abolished. This means the work test of 40 hours of gainful employment within a 30 day period must be satisfied for those aged 65 to 74 before a contribution to super can be made. Superannuation is not only complex but also constantly changing – it is imperative that you obtain high quality advice to ensure that you use the rules to your advantage.

This increases to the considerable amount of $1.15 million combined for a couple. Ingredients: 1 thick slice crustless bread 375ml milk 25ml oil 10ml butter 2 onions, sliced 2 cloves garlic, crushed 25ml curry powder 10ml salt 25ml chutney 15ml smooth apricot jam 15ml worcestershire sauce 5ml turmeric 25ml brown vinegar 1 kg raw mince 100ml sultanas 3 eggs Pinch of salt and turmeric bay leaves

Method: Soak bread in 50ml milk. Heat oil and butter in large pan and fry onions and garlic. When onions are soft, add curry powder, salt, chutney, jam, worcestershire sauce, turmeric and vinegar and mix well. Drain and mash bread and reserve milk. Add
bread to pan together with mince and sultanas. Cook over low heat, stirring, and when meat loses its pinkness, remove from stove. Add one beaten egg, mix well, then spoon into a greased, 28 x 16 cm baking dish and level the top. Beat remaining eggs with reserved milk and the salt and turmeric. Pour over meat mixture and put a few bay leaves on top. Stand dish in a larger pan of water and bake uncovered, at 180 degrees Celsius for around one hour, or until pie is set. Serve with rice, coconut, chutney, nuts and bananas.

I
f you’ve been nominated as an executor under a will, then you should be mindful that certain people can apply to the court, after the will maker dies, for orders which result in them receiving more from the estate than the will allows for. Spouses, children and certain dependents of the deceased can bring these applications if they have been left out of the will altogether, or even if they believe that what the will provides for them, isn’t enough. What they need to prove is that the will fails to make adequate provision for their proper maintenance and support. What is adequate or proper will depend on the facts of each case, but as an executor it is important for you to understand that there are certain time limits within which these applications must be made. You should be very reluctant to allow any distribution of assets from the estate before
you are confident that the time for an application to be made has passed. This point is very important because if a successful application is brought after you make distributions, you could find yourself personally responsible to pay money back to the estate. If an application is made, then as executor your primary duty is to defend the claim and uphold the will as this represented the wishes of the deceased. However, where appropriate, you may need to negotiate a compromise that satisfies the various parties. An executor must notify all interested parties that a family provision application has been made, participate in settlement and mediation discussions and present to the court all relevant evidence. RATES TO STAY LOW Australia will follow the same path as the US, Japan and Western Europe and keep interest rates low for the long term, says a leading global economist.
A
ustralia’s interest rates are likely to stay low for years, perhaps even decades, a top global economist has warned. US futures trader and exchange operator CME Group’s executive director and senior economist Erik Norland, who is visiting Australia this week, says any rate rise forcing Australia’s debt-laden companies and households to pay more interest could be crippling and unbalance the entire economy. The country’s total private sector debt, including companies and households but excluding financial institutions, rose from 203 per cent of GDP to 243 per cent between 2011 and 2015, to $2.89 trillion, according to the Bank of International Settlements. Because of that burden and associated risk, Norland expects the Reserve Bank to avoid starting a cycle of raising rates in the long term, and he doubts Australian interest rates will ever get back up to a level of three or four per cent. “I think it’s going to put Australia on a path to becoming eventually like the United States, Japan and Western Europe, where rates will ultimately be very, very low,”
Norland says. However, he said that situation would not be unusual as, looking back to the 1800s, the high interest rates of the 1970s to the 1990s were the exception rather than the norm.
“…he doubts Australian interest rates will ever get back up to a level of three or four per cent” “We’re essentially going back into a new normal where there are very, very low levels of interest rates around the world, so that could potentially last not just for a few years, it could potentially last even for decades,” Norland said. He says low rates potentially make stocks and property trade at higher levels but a low rate environment would not necessarily lead to higher volatility as
investors hungry for returns kept demand for those asset classes high. Norland says higher rates usually attracted investors to safer assets such as bonds because they had high returns and
were less risky than stocks or property, but low rates usually did the opposite. “Now that interest rates are very low I think it takes all of the risky assets and elevates their price potential.” AAP

FRANK BARRETT, HIA AWARDS JUDGE Are there any mistakes people should avoid when entering their projects into the awards? When entering a project for judging, make sure you can provide proof of value so the project is valued in the correct category. If the build was a contract (most are) make sure the owners are part of the process. We judge the end product, the degree of difficulty in the construction process is not considered, except in extreme circumstances. Are there any buildings that stand out in your years of judging? We have seen some amazing houses over the years. I am looking forward to seeing a project that is so well designed and built at a median price which is capable of winning the overall prize as House of the Year for the Sunny Coast. What I mean by that is say a $480,000 build is as a good as a $2,500,000 house that wins its category but is not necessarily House of the Year. An item that stands out to all the judges is the emerging talent among the 26 to 36 year-old builders on the Coast. Not everyone will buy an award-winning home – but are there attributes from
these award-winning homes that everyone can think about when they build their own home? Buyers of new homes or those seeking to renovate can be confident that the winner of the category does good work. The strong competition on the Coast ensures that the high standard is carried down the line. Most of our good builders have heavy work bookings, some will happily refer clients. The best way to find a good builder is to ask for recommendations from HIA or a friend who had a project completed and is happy with the outcome.

What changes have you noticed over the years in the entries? Every year from a design perspective, we see new trends driven by market influence however, increasingly projects have embraced passive design principles, water and energy efficiency. Clients and practitioners are very well educated in the benefits that this brings from a liveability perspective through to cost savings for the home occupier. As a judge, what are you looking for when considering the difference between a good entry and a winning entry? Judges comment on the skill and passion that our builders exhibit through their work. The judges are afforded an intimate appreciation of each project by the builder, which is indeed a privilege. While everybody has their own unique preferences when it comes to building and design, the judging of our entries is carried out in quite a clinical fashion to achieve the fairest and most transparent selection of a
winning project. Typically each entry is scored individually by three judges against specific weighted criteria that is relevant to the category of entry i.e. Custom Built Home, Spec Home, etc. The key aspect of the project that affords the entry the most marks is the workmanship, construction detailing, degree of difficulty and choice of materials. Bearing in mind these are builders’ awards, the design of the building can contribute to the appeal of a project, however the builder is not always in control or even involved in the design. Rather, the builder is charged with delivering on the design. However, where the builder has clearly contributed to this aspect, it allows bonus points. Other areas that contribute to a final score are the ‘green’ credentials, value for money/cost effectiveness, market demand and innovation. an opportunity to get together with our peers in appreciation of the work carried out. Winning an award is a bonus – the icing on the cake – but being a part of the awards speaks volumes to your team, the client, subcontractors and suppliers who have contributed to the project. For the builder it’s a shout out saying, I think we’ve done a great job here, I want to put it up for an award. Are there any buildings that stand out in your years of judging? Yes several, but for different reasons. A few years back there was a stunning home built in Tasmania. The build cost was $700,000 and it deservedly took out the National Home of the Year. So perhaps contrary to opinion, it’s definitely not a matter of throwing money at a project to make it a winner. It’s true of course that where money is no object, it is often an opportunity to carry out something that is truly unique. Not all builders get this sort of opportunity in their career, but it doesn’t make them any less professional or successful. Not everyone will buy an award-winning home – but are there attributes from
these award-winning homes that everyone can think about when they build their own home? Quality and position are the key. Building a home should be an exciting and rewarding experience and as it is often the largest investment we’ll make, look at the care and detail in the work that your builder displays. Ensure the home is built using appropriate materials for the environment in which it will stand, and take into account the cost effectiveness of maintaining and living in your home.

T
he Kawana address can be confusing even for old locals. Put simply, Kawana Waters is the generic term for the large land tract between the Mooloolah River and Lake Currimundi that was first mooted for development in 1959. Specifically, it is a series of suburbs that have grown up step-by-step, as ti-tree scrub has been converted into canal and beachfront estates in the oldest and biggest single land development on the Sunshine Coast. Minyama, Buddina, Parrearra, Warana, Bokarina, Birtinya, Kawana Island and Wurtulla all share the same Kawana 4575 postcode. Celebrating its 55th birthday in 2015, Kawana Waters is a ribbon development between Caloundra and Mooloolaba, and the beach west to the Mooloolah River National Park and Meridan Plains. The opening of the Mooloolah River bridge and the 11km Nicklin Way in 1965, brought the realisation that here was land ripe for housing. The first suburb to be built was

Birtinya, near the Kawana Way west of Bokarina. As well as providing thousands of houses beside the beach, Kawana also has substantial commercial and industrial areas, making it a virtual microcosm, complete with its own set of emergency services, schools, parks, offices and retailers and a major hospital on the way. Kawana Shoppingworld, in 1979, was the first major shopping precinct to open on the Sunshine Coast.

Finally, I was given permission from my eight year old to help him catch a wave last weekend. Yes, a very stubborn young boy who finally relented. When you only weight 25kg dripping wet the length of ride is quite astounding. As he rode off in to the distance I can understand why they call it Happy Valley as the smile on his face said it all. Perfect conditions for learners this weekend with good conditions unfolding. The whales also have been putting on a show up and down the coast so it will be perfect conditions to sit on a headland or paddle out to see them.
FISHING REPORT with Wayne Nilsson from Maroochydore Fishing World
ESTUARY: Whiting up to 500 grams are taking yabbies and worms from the southern end of Goat Island in the Maroochy River. Flathead are taking plastics, baby blue pilchards and hard body lures along Cotton Tree. You can get jew and trevally at the Cod Hole on the top of the tide. A few mud crabs are showing up at Bli Bli. SURF: Tailor are still plentiful on the night tides at Pincushion with some unstoppables providing a bit of sport. There are bream off the rocks in the front of the Sea Breeze Caravan Park with white bait and fowl gut the best bait. OFFSHORE: Water temp is around 21 degrees. Mixed reef fish are being taken at The Gneerings using squid and mullet fillet. Yellowtail kingies at The Blinker are taking jigged lures and live baits. The Barwon banks is best for for snappery squire, pearl perch and cobia. WA pillies are the best baits. FRESHWATER: It’s probably the best time of the year to fish impoundments with the water crystal clear with fish rising to baits near the surface. Borumba Dam near Imbil has returned saratoga and bass this week on fly and trolled lures. Bjelke Peterson is another dam firing for bass and golden perch using a variety of baits and lures. There are good reports from Somerset this week for golden perch, bass and jew from the usual haunts.

I was reminded of my occasional flights of fantasy about how I will be remembered – if at all – after reading a New York Times obituary about an American businessman – the headline read: Edward Davis, ‘World’s Grumpiest Boss’, Dies at 85. The article went on to catalogue the memorable missives which had earnt him that unfortunate moniker. “Do not speak to me when you see me. If I want to speak to you, I will do so. I want to save my throat. I don’t want to ruin it by saying hello to you all.” “DO YOUR JOBS AND KEEP YOUR MOUTH SHUT!”
Will they talk about you as a good dad? Devoted brother? Reliable friend? Good workmate? Or will the opposite be true?
