HEALTHY OUTLOOK Michael Metcalfe is settling in to a new lifestyle at Dicky Beach, having left Toowoomba to take up a new role on the Coast. FIRST JOB?
FAVOURITE PLACE ON THE COAST?

I’ve always been fond of Moffat Beach, with its wonderful view of the water and the great little mix of cafes and shops. The surf at Alex has always been a favourite place for a swim. Since we moved to Dicky Beach, I’ve been developing a greater appreciation for this little hideaway and the largely uncrowded stretch of beach. The boys and I have been practising our body boarding skills before we do the quintessential ‘new to the Sunny Coast thing’ and learn to surf.
WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY WORKING ON? I was recently appointed to the position of Assistant Commissioner, Sunshine Coast Local Ambulance Service Network, Queensland Ambulance Service. Prior to this I spent 18 months as part of the executive team at Darling Downs Hospital and Health Service. Apart from the role with DDHHS, I have been with the QAS since 1991 and was previously the Assistant Commissioner, Darling Downs LASN.
WHERE DO YOU TAKE VISITORS? We spend a lot of time with visitors at Dicky and Moffat Beaches. It is still almost too good to believe having the beach there on tap every day of the week, and only a few minutes’ walk from home. We are also spoiled for choice with coffee shops, restaurants, and a great little micro-brewery.
YOUR FAMILY INCLUDES. . . My immediate family includes my wife Laanie, daughter Gabby, my sons Jake and Toby and Floyd the dog. IMAGE: TRACY NAUGHTON
FIRST CAR? A wonderful 1969 Mini 1100. Unfortunately, not long after paying it off I had collision with a cow one night on the highway and the Mini was no more.
FAVOURITE BOOK? I love reading and largely prefer a book to movies in most cases. I have a soft spot for the escapism of crime and suspense novels, and am a great fan of the Charlie Parker series by John Connolly.
WHAT ARE YOU READING NOW? Just finished A Time of Torment by John Connolly.
FAVOURITE SONG? Indifference by Pearl Jam. Huge fan of Pearl Jam and Eddie Vedder’s singing.
BEST ADVICE YOU’VE BEEN GIVEN? Don’t waste energy on things over which you have no control. I see people regularly consume themselves trying to influence or control the outcome of events that they have no capacity to influence; rather than being clear about what they can change or influence, and focusing on these things.
YOUR GREATEST REGRET? Not attending university straight after school. That would have been much more fun than fitting it in around work.
WHAT ACHIEVEMENT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF? My work has given me numerous opportunities to have an enormous and fundamental impact on people’s lives, for which I think I am blessed.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU LIVED ON THE SUNSHINE COAST? I moved here approximately four months ago, and my family followed at the end of the last school term.
WHY DO YOU LIVE HERE? Work is what allowed us to relocate here, but the weather, the climate, the lifestyle and beautiful surrounds is what made it an attractive place to move to. We have been holidaying here for many years now, and it is nice to be able to experience all the attractions of the area on a daily basis.
IF YOU COULD CHANGE ONE THING ON THE COAST WHAT WOULD IT BE? We do miss the size of our house block at Highfields where we moved here from. It would be nice to be able to be this close to the water, but have just a little more space.
BEST DAY IN YOUR LIFE? Clearly, the day I married my wife Laanie.
CAN YOU NOMINATE A DAY IN YOUR LIFE THAT TURNED OUT TO BE A TURNING POINT? The day my youngest son had open heart surgery – it clarified for me, beyond any doubt, what was important to me; and conversely, the things that really didn’t matter.
YOU ARE HAPPIEST WHEN? Riding motorbikes and with my family, so it’s always nice to get away for a weekend of motorbikes, camping and a fire.
ADVICE TO YOUR 18 YEAR-OLD SELF? Buy the house, not the car.
TEA OR COFFEE? Coffee, either flat white or espresso.

HOMEGROWN HEROES To celebrate Father’s Day, we spoke to three prominent Sunshine Coast dads about their favourite job in life. Compiled by Richard O’Leary.

t was once said that “Dads are most ordinary men turned by love into heroes, adventurers, storytellers, singers of songs”. This Father’s Day My Weekly Preview has asked three well-known Sunshine Coast dads to share the secrets of their success – and suggest ways they could have done things better.
ALLAN PEASE – Body language expert How many children do you have? Six children: Melissa 43, Cameron 41, Jasmine 34, Adam 32, Brandon 11 and Bella 8. We also have eight grandchildren. I have been doing the school run for over 40 years (and I have at least another eight years of it to go). What’s the best part about being a dad? Being their mentor and sharing in their daily lives. Taking them to school, travelling around the world with them and showing them how life works (or doesn’t work!). Travel broadens kids’ perspectives and makes them more interesting and worldly as people. All my kids have been to at least 30 countries each. Bella has visited 50 so far and Brandon 60. Barb and I trained them all to work in the business and to travel with us and to understand things like currency rates, cultural mores, to speak in public and to communicate in other languages. Some people say it’s an expensive way to parent (and it is!) but the self-development opportunities for kids is wonderful, so it’s worth it.

What’s the most challenging part of being a dad? There’s no instruction manual. Knowing that many of the things the kids experience now, will likely not be fully understood or appreciated by them until they are older and have their own families. Some things I teach my younger kids they may reject or laugh about now because parents can be seen as not cool. Is there one memory as a dad that sticks out more than others? Being at the birth of four of my kids. That’s an experience unlike any other.

What’s the best advice you have been given about being a dad? When kids get older and have partners or spouses who don’t fit your own expectations or values, you have to shut up and keep your opinions to yourself, unless asked. If you put yourself between your older kids and their partners, you will lose out, big time. If there was one thing you have done

What don’t you get told about being a dad before your children are born? That your life as it exists will never be the same again. In my case, I was the lead guitarist in a rock band when my first daughter was born – I had a beard and an afro hairstyle and planned to travel the world playing the blues. Suddenly, I had to shave, get a haircut and a real job. If you are going to be an involved hands-on father, life can never be
that you would recommend other dads not do, what would that be? Most new dads make a point of telling everyone that when they have children, they will be wellmannered and disciplined angels, not like some of those out-of-control psycho kids they’ve seen running wild in supermarkets. The reality is that you’ll get what nature gives you and have to manage them as best you can. You’ll likely end up being the father
you currently hope you don’t sit near on a plane. Do you think it was easier to be a dad now or when you were a boy? When I was a boy, life was much simpler and life and family values were clear. There were no distractions like the internet, Minecraft, cell phones, nude television or violent video games. We found our friends in our street – not on an iPad – and our goal in life was to own a bicycle. Our parents taught us how to do everything from changing a lightbulb to cooking, washing and repairing things. Boys had a respect for their dads and even if we didn’t like their advice, we still admired them. Today’s dads have to compete with too many things that unsettle their kids. If you could pass on just one piece of advice to your children, what would it be? Strive to be the best person you can be – but do it for yourself, not for others. While today’s life is in fact, one huge competition with others, the true measure of your worth as a person is how well you are doing against yourself, not against others. What’s the best advice your dad gave you about life? He taught me how to put my goals in writing and how to achieve them. He said there was nothing I couldn’t do, so I grew up believing anything was possible. And it is if you believe it is. The enjoyment of seeing my children grow up and develop as good human beings together with the contribution they individually and collectively make to our family and community. What’s the most challenging part of being a dad? Being a good role model, not compromising standards and being even-handed and fair to each child. Is there one memory as a dad that sticks out more than others? The birth of each of our children, it was such a defining moment when they actually arrive, there’s a great sense of expectation prior but delivery created a sense of reality and love for Lorrell and I. What don’t you get told about being a dad before your children are born? I have four younger brothers and one younger sister and Lorrell is the youngest of nine

with lots of nephews and nieces so we had a lot of experience with either babies or younger children and were well schooled in what to expect What’s the best advice you have been given about being a dad? From all of the advice I’d received, I determined that I could sum up my responsibility in two words: the role of the father is to ‘provide and guide’. If there was one thing you have done that you would recommend other dads not do, what would that be? There’s always a danger that you will try to develop your children like you were or in the way you were parented. I think it’s important to recognise every child is an individual and different and what works with one may not work with another. Do you think it was easier to be a dad now or when you were a boy? Every generation deals with different challenges and opportunities but I think it was easier to be a dad in my father’s era, because families tended to live a lot closer together and there was a lot more extended support and guidance. There was generally a greater degree of respect for elders from advice to discipline. We lived on a farm with a party line phone and seven miles out of town, so the biggest challenge was how to get to town, Nowadays, children can access destinations anywhere in the world via improved communications. If you could pass on just one piece of advice to your children, what would it be? To enjoy the diversity and friendship that the world offers and be a contributor. What’s the best advice your dad gave you about life? Dad encouraged me to be a good communicator and to know your facts. When my father used to ask us a question and we’d say, “well I think the answer is… ”, he’d say “don’t think, know the answer, don’t wait for the crows to build a nest in your ar-and then wonder where the sticks came from!”.
TODD WIDDICOMBE – Radio star How many children do you have? I have four bin lids: Noah, 12, Noah’s brother Fynn, 14, Nedd, 9 and Isla 7. What’s the best part about being a dad? Seeing the joy on your kids’ faces when they do something awesome and the surprise on your wife’s when you do. Seriously, parenting is basically 83 per cent making empty threats and 17 per cent picking up Lego. I wouldn’t change it for the world.

Especially the cute mispronunciations of words like Corn Flakes to Florn Cakes and butterflies to flutterbies. The word popcorn is a whole other story though. What’s the most challenging part of being a dad? Raising a teenage boy. There’s plenty of eye-rolling, cursing, emotional meltdowns and threats of running away… and that’s just from me. With younger kids the sleep deprivation can be pretty bad. Kids are awesome but they are like little terrorists and sleep deprivation is how they torture you. My little girl asked me recently what it’s like to be a dad, so I woke her up at
3am just to tell her my sock came off. Is there one memory as a dad that sticks out more than others? Well it’s a memory, a very distant memory from BK (Before Kids). I vaguely recall a time when I was able to go to the bathroom in peace. There was a time long ago in a galaxy far, far away when I could sit on the toilet without the minute my backside touches the seat hearing, KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK… “Dad, how long are you going to be in there? I need to go… Daaaadddd… Do you know where the matches are? Dad can I have a sleepover at Kai’s? Nedd’s hurt himself. Dad can we get a cat? Hey Dad, Fraser’s mum is here. SMASH. Dad, how much money was your guitar?” Aaaaahhhhhhhhhhhh. What don’t you get told about being a dad before your children are born? That kids are like girlfriends, they move in, take over and wreck your stuff. Oh and you’re going to get kicked in the tenders – a lot. What’s the best advice you have been given about being a dad? Be the type of man you would want your daughter to be with. Teach your sons to respect all women simply by respecting and loving their mum. If there was one thing you have done that you would recommend other dads not do what would that be? Don’t tell your kids that the local home ice-cream guy only plays music when he’s run out of icecreams. It’ll come back to bite you on your Iceberger Caramel Crunch. Do you think it was easier to be a dad now or when you were a boy? It’s easier to be a dad now than when I was a boy because, well, back then, I was boy. If you could pass on just one piece of advice to your children, what would it be? Always be nice to people and treat them well. Our greatest value as humans is how we make other people feel. For my boys, “All a woman needs to survive is food, water and compliments, always provide all three”. For my little girl Isla, “If the shoe fits, buy it in every colour baby”. What’s the best advice your dad gave you about life? My dad was a man of very few words, I remember him saying, “Son…”.

There was a special delivery off the Sunshine Coast this week when a baby humpback whale was born in front of a local whale watching tour group. Skipper of the Whale One vessel Arnie Jorgensen secured naming rights after being the first to spot the calf – and he’s called it ‘Cartwright’ in recognition of the iconic point near where it was sighted. There are a record number of whales making their annual migration up the east coast of Australia this year.

EPIC TALE TELLS THE REAL STORY
Veteran author and journalist Robert Macklin is on a mission to set the record straight about our greatest explorer. Words: Leigh Robshaw

I
t has been 25 years since Canberra journalist and author Robert Macklin has visited our region, but his desire to share the intriguing story of Australia’s most underrated early explorer will bring him to Coolum in September for the Sunshine Coast International Readers and Writers Festival. Macklin is speaking to My Weekly Preview the day after the launch of his 26th book, Hamilton Hume – Our Greatest Explorer. The work has generated enormous interest here and overseas and details how Hume worked alongside Aboriginal tribes to complete some of Australia’s greatest expeditions. “He was really an extraordinary man and he did remarkable things and did it all in cooperation with the Aboriginal people, which really made him stand out with the British born explorers,� he says. “He taught Sturt how to handle himself in those situations when there was any hostility from Aboriginal people whose land he was passing through. With Major Mitchell, it was Hume’s influence that caused Mitchell to give his surveyors the order that wherever possible, they should use the Aboriginal names for geographical features and so on. “So he really did have a huge impact on early Australian colonisation.� Hume was born in Toongabbie, near Parramatta, and as a teenager, explored the Illawarra area with an Aboriginal boy called Dual, with whom he became great friends. “He really understood Aboriginal law and the bush. He loved the bush and it became an open book to him. “What Hume did – and Sturt followed his example – when it appeared there was a hostile reception, Hume would walk forward and actually give his rifle to the Aboriginal leader and suddenly he was no longer a threat and the situation quickly quietened down. That was what Sturt learned to do and he was very grateful that Hume had taught him how to get along with the Aboriginal people. “Hamilton Hume was never interfered with by the Aboriginal people, they invariably helped him out with directions to waterholes and that sort of thing.� Hume’s great journey from Sydney to Port Phillip, along with William Hovell, was made possible through his benevolent relationship with Aboriginal tribes he encountered, particularly on the return trip. What is today a ten-hour drive, took Hume and his party 16 weeks in 1824–25. “That was the expedition that really changed Australia from being a penal colony to the potential to become a nation in its own right,� says Macklin. “He opened up a vast amount of wonderful country, to say nothing of the Murrumbidgee and
the Murray Rivers.� Macklin penned Hume’s biography in part to address the injustice prevalent in Anglophile accounts that credited the English-born Hovell as the leader of the Sydney to Port Phillip expedition, when in fact he had wanted to turn back three times. In this book, Macklin sets the record straight. Macklin began his career at The Courier Mail, later moving to The Age in Melbourne and The Canberra Times, before taking on the role of press secretary to Deputy Prime Minister John McEwan in 1967. A prolific writer, he has an affinity for the Australian bush: “There’s a lovely sense of space and of belonging I find that really moves me to be out in the bush alone and I just love it.� He also has a deep love of Australian history and is currently writing a history of Australia/China relations over the last 200 years. Inevitably, the book will bring him to write about Kevin Rudd once again, the subject of his 2007 biography. Asked to comment on Rudd’s failed UN bid, Macklin says, “It would have been absolutely devastating to Kevin,

because the long period I spent with him in researching his biography, it was quite clear to me that becoming Prime Minister of Australia was only a stepping stone in his mind to becoming secretary-general of the United Nations. I don’t know if he would have made a good secretary-general, but he certainly didn’t make a good PM.� For now though, Macklin’s focus is on his latest book, which he says fills in the gaps in his own education, and that of many Australians. “The more research I do, the more I’ve come to realise we were never taught Australian history in school,� he says. “I grew up in Brisbane and the Queensland bush and what we were taught was the British history of Australia, which is a very different beast. As I’ve become more and more interested, I’ve become more aware that we know very little of that period – the first 80 years of our colonial past.� Macklin’s father-in-law was a bush auctioneer and amateur writer and researcher who became interested in Hamilton Hume in the 1970s and began to research his life. The research served as a helpful starting point for the project. “But then I expanded it to include the whole of our history in that 80-year period from the gold rush to the bushrangers, and Hume’s life in a way threads itself all the way through that period, because he didn’t die until 1873.� Hume died a well regarded man, having been made a member of the Royal Geographical Society and becoming a prominent land owner, but still felt a sense of injustice. “He was always terribly concerned that his name be properly remembered, because when he came to our biggest river, he named it the Hume after his father, yet a few years later when it was discovered further downstream by Sturt, he named it the Murray after an obscure Scottish politician. Hume was upset by that, but he of course had no idea that the Hume Highway would be named after him. “That’s one of the reasons I’m so pleased with the book and the way in which it’s been received. In a sense, I’ve been able to give him the recognition he deserves.�

By the end of the century most of the world will be too hot to host the Olympics in summer, researchers say. A study from the University of Auckland has found by 2085 almost 90 per cent of the large cities in the Northern Hemisphere will be so affected by climate change, the temperature and humidity will be too high to safely run a marathon in summer. But epidemiology and biostatistics professor Alistair Woodward, who co-authored the study, says where to host the Olympics would only be the start of the problem for outdoor exercise in the future. “Increasing restrictions on when, where, and how the Games can be held owing to extreme heat are a sign of a much bigger problem,” he said. The study found only three cities in North America, two in Asia and none in Africa would be considered “low-risk” for outdoor exercise in the future. – AAP

Shipwreck in crystal clear waters of Heron Island

W
hile some of the Great Barrier Reef off far north Queensland is in big trouble, there’s still a whole world of untouched, unbleached, amazing coral to see – you just need to head further south. Mid-way down the Queensland coast off
Hamilton Island, snorkelers are getting their first taste of the reef. And they can’t believe what they’re seeing. Pastel-coloured hard coral spreads over the drop off and surrounds the lagoons on Bait Reef, where we’ve come for a day of snorkelling.
This healthy coral provides homes for hundreds of fish. Patches of green sea grass ebb and flow in the ocean current as anemones hiding clown fish reach their tentacles towards the sky. Down here, there’s certainly no sense that the reef is dying.
Further north, it’s a different story. Around Lizard Island, one of the most northerly of Queensland’s islands off Cooktown, the reef has seen extensive damage. News of coral bleaching has reached far and wide, with echoes sounding this year with the release of David Attenborough’s Great Barrier Reef documentary, in which the naturalist descended beneath the waves in a state-of-the-art submersible, screening pictures of damaged reef around the world. The Great Barrier measures 240 square kilometres and is 2000 kilometres from top to bottom. “It’s a bloody big distance,” Hamilton Island’s resident reef expert David Stielow, who works with Explore tours, tells AAP when I ask him what he tells tourists who ask about bleaching. “I think people get pleasantly surprised when they go on tours like mine, they say this is really pristine.” Bait Reef is indeed superb. unscreens that smell good and are anti-ageing and moisturising will be the focus of sunscreen campaigns into the future, according to the Cancer Council. “The suncare category still has great potential to educate more consumers that wearing sunscreen is not only one of the great ways you can help reduce your skin cancer risk, but also help protect skin from the signs of premature ageing, Cancer Council Australia head of licensing Vivienne Mellis told Beauty Directory. “Moreover, sunscreens that look, feel and smell good on the skin make it more appealing to incorporate sunscreen use. Cancer Council will continue to lead the way as an innovator of sunscreen betterfeeling formulas.” A standout ingredient trend in the suncare market for this summer is vitamin B3 (nicotinamide). “It has so many benefits
to the skin when applied topically including moisturising dry skin, improving the appearance of skin tone and texture and helping to maintain normal skin barrier function,” says Ego Pharmaceuticals spokesperson Lauren Porter. “Nicotinamide is also showing signs of significantly reducing the incidence of some skin cancers when taken orally.” Nicotinamide is found in all SunSense sunscreens. Three sunscreen trends predicted by experts to be big for spring/summer 2017 are aloe vera sprays in aerosol cans, facial sunscreens with moisturising benefits, and physical sunscreens with a lighter, invisible-feel formulation. oes it ever feel like losing weight and being healthy are a little bit in conflict? So many weight loss products contain artificial sweeteners, replace fat with extra sugar, and are totally empty of nutrition. In the first of my three-part series on this topic – I will provide some swaps to show you some simple ways to make healthier choices. Potato gems – It takes 40 minutes of cycling to burn off 140 grams of potato gems. Healthy swap – Skip the frozen or fast food bags of potato gems and make your own at home. Try lower-carb sweet potato and broccoli gems or simply peel and parboil potatoes then finely grate using a cheese grater or rice masher. Squeeze the excess water from the potatoes and add your choice of seasonings, such as salt, pepper, nutritional yeast, parsley, shallots, or oregano, plus a little gluten-free flour to bind it all together. Roll this mixture into
little gems. Fry or oven bake the gems with a little oil of your choice. So good. Donuts – It takes about 35 minutes of circuit training to burn off the calories from a standard donut. Healthy swap – With a few healthy twists, you ‘donut’ have to miss out on this popular sweet. Simply halve a gluten-free, wholegrain bagel, mix some date paste, tahini and vanilla essence together to form a ‘caramel spread’ and top with natural sprinkles. French fries – It takes 25 minutes jogging to burn off 85 grams of fries. Healthy swap – I’d take oven-baked, crispy, sweet potato fries over french fries any day. (They seriously taste just as good, if not better than the real thing.) Simply cut whole sweet potatoes into shoestring fries, coat with a little oil and sea salt, then oven bake until crispy.

Often when I’m travelling around our beautiful Sunshine Coast, I get asked: “What’s it like being the mayor?”. My response is always the same: “It’s the best job in the world”. Here’s a snapshot of one recent morning which showed what a rewarding and enlightening role it is. The day started speaking with year six students at Siena College, who were very keen to find out more about local government and to share their views on the Coast’s future. They were an impressive group with great ideas. After launching our new national netball team, the Sunshine Coast Lightning, with the help of dozens of young netballers from our region, I dropped in on the Seniors Week high tea. Like the year sixes, the older residents I was fortunate to meet were upbeat and excited about our future. Their positivity was infectious. The morning closed with a sod turning at Harmony – the new $3 billion masterplanned community at Palmview, which will create 9000 construction jobs. We live in one of the best places in the world and those few hours again showed why we are on our way to make it even better.

One of the first technology trials in council’s Smart City Program has demonstrated the effectiveness of bin sensors and provided valuable data that will reduce council’s carbon footprint and improve service efficiency. The public place bin sensors, installed in five bins on Caloundra’s Bulcock Beach Esplanade, monitor the amount of waste placed in each bin using ultrasound technology.

If the sensor shows the bin is not in need of emptying, a waste collection vehicle is able to be directed elsewhere. Reducing the frequency of public bin collections can mean less disruption, particularly in a recreational zone like Bulcock Beach Esplanade. Installing this technology widely across the region could also help council better understand where our waste ‘hot spots’ are to deliver a more efficient service.

Sami Muirhead reckons there’s more important things in life than worrying about how you look in a swimsuit.
The Coast is not only beautiful on the outside, at our heart we are a region of givers dedicated to philanthropic pursuits, writes Bill Darby.
I
t’s actually spring! I am not quite sure how this happened. I am happy for warmer and longer days. I am ecstatic about more sunshine and weeks filled with sandy beaches, salt water and fresh air. However, I feel a little bit guilty. I have pretty much hibernated all winter and consumed a grizzly bear’s body weight in wine and cheese. And potato bake. And chocolate. And I am pretty sure it’s all headed straight to my backside. Spring of course means swimming on the Coast. Which means getting my Rubenesque figure into a swimsuit. It is akin to getting a sleeping bag into its tiny cover. Bits just seem to pop out or sag down or refuse to budge. Remember the days you could buy a bikini for under $15 from a chain store and it would still look pretty good? If only I realised that at the time instead of whittling away my 20s with insecurities when I had a stomach that will never be so flat again. I could see my toes in my twenties. I used to keep a spare set of bikinis in my glove box. I don’t know how to change a tyre, but I could change into a two-piece for a dip at Cotton Tree by my car door in less than three minutes. Oh youth. You really are so wasted on the young.
Nowadays of course, swimwear seems a more sombre shopping task. The togs I am looking at cost much more than $15, as they seem to have inbuilt scaffolding that could hold up the foundations of the Eiffel Tower. They promise to have magical powers these expensive shapewear togs that will pull in your stomach, lift up your bottom, harness your wayward bosom and even elongate your torso. I keep seeing pictures of skinny young things in magazines wearing the most insanely high-cut swimsuits. Think Christie Brinkley when she was the ultimate uptown girl. And remember Elle rocked the rubber high cut one-piece in the TAB advertisement? The one-piece has gone retro and the latest designs are super skimpy. On top of that, many of the swimsuits have cut-outs so they are basically missing critical parts of fabric in critical places of coverage, such as the midriff section. Oh well girls, it does not really matter what we wear or what we look like in a swimsuit. I have been to too many funerals in the last few weeks and all that matters is we are kind to each other and as happy and healthy as we can be. And remember my motto: a kaftan and a mojito makes any swimsuit look fabulous.

W
hat is it that makes the Sunshine Coast unique? There are any number of beautiful destinations in Australia but the Sunshine Coast remains a quite a distinctive place and I think I know why. Over the years, our community has developed a deep appreciation of the importance of giving. Among the people I’ve come to know, I could count on one hand those not involved in some form of charity organisation or community endeavour. Either as a donor, a volunteer or simply as an active participant in a local event or business group, Coast people love to get involved. A friend recently shared with me an article containing research from the Australian Charities Fund and the Centre for Social Impact. From a survey of 4100 people from the country’s biggest employers, those who donated through staff giving programs performed better. There are few better examples of staff giving than at the University of the Sunshine Coast. A year or two ago, USC started a program named Starfish to help fund much needed student assistance bursaries. There’s a story about a boy on a beach standing among a thousand washed up starfish. The boy was throwing the starfish back in the water one by one to save them and was told by a passer-by that his efforts would make no difference. The boy corrected the man saying, “I’ve made a difference to that one”. A growing number of USC’s staff
contribute each fortnight to the Starfish Bursary Fund. Anyone from the community can download a form from USC’s website and also donate to help a student in need. I remember when local radio station MixFM started their Give Me 5 For Kids campaign. Years on, this juggernaut charity movement has engaged thousands and raised millions for children’s health services. The number of worthwhile causes active here on the Coast continues to grow. The calendar of gala balls is ever expanding and the call on businesses and the community to contribute is increasing – and we seem okay

Doing something kind for someone else, often a stranger, is so powerful it even bombards us on our smartphones. Random acts of kindness go viral on social media. The more you give the more you receive. Known as the paradox of generosity, it’s a philosophy many people live by. It worked for good old apostle Luke, and it stacks up for a great many of us here today, too.

S
ince struggling at the start of the year, the Australian stock market has picked up nicely following a surge in a range of sectors – materials, property trusts, industrials and consumer discretionary. While local shareholders have welcomed this rebound, investors in the US have even more reason to cheer. The three major benchmarks there – the Dow Jones, the S&P 500 and the NASDAQ – each closed at all-time highs on the one day in mid-August – the first time since 1999. In contrast, our local ASX 200 benchmark – 5,560 at the time of writing – is still short of its previous record of 6,852, struck in 2007. It’s worth discussing why this is the case but also questioning whether this is a fair comparison to begin with. Dealing with the
appropriate basis of comparison first of all, a traditional price benchmark is perhaps mistaken given the different approaches to dividends between the two countries. Firstly, Australian companies pay out more of their profits in dividends than their American counterparts with current payout ratios of 77 per cent and 37 per cent, respectively. US companies instead tend to buy back large amounts of their own stock. Secondly, Australian stocks trade on higher yields; currently 4.7 per cent versus 2.1 per cent. This dividend paying behaviour is influenced by the different tax treatments of capital gains and dividends. It could be argued then that a fairer benchmark is an accumulation index rather than the more commonly reported price index. Accumulation measures total-return, which accounts for price changes and dividends. Looking at the ASX 200 Index on an accumulation basis, we note that it is around 20 per cent higher than its 2007 high point. The index hit a record high in April last year, dipped in the intervening months but has rallied in the last few months and reached its second-highest point in August.

underperformance of other sectors has been sobering. For example, the materials and energy sectors have halved in value (despite recent rallies). One factor that greatly influences a sector’s performance over the longer term is its profitability. There is a close relationship between earnings and share prices performance. For example, healthcare earnings have doubled since 2007, which has underpinned the sector’s 150 per cent growth in value. This emphasises the fact that profits matter over the longer term. Among sectors that have performed well this year, earnings for the more cyclical ones such as consumer discretionary and materials are on the up at the moment, but note they tend to be volatile. On the other hand, earnings for property trusts tend to be more consistent.

The Shed at Aussie World will rock on September 10 when young local talent, supported by big business, comes together to raise money for two local teenagers living with cancer. Tim and Sam Aitken of Hoo8hoo have performed at numerous Sunshine Coast charity events and are the driving force behind the KidsFORKids initiative. “We thought it would be a great idea for kids on the Sunny Coast to get involved in a cool charity event to raise money and support other local kids who are doing it tough in some way — and we’ll let adults come as well, says Caloundra City Private School student Tim. Preparations for the first KidsFORKids Concert began just a few weeks ago and the response has been overwhelming. The open-age event will feature an impressive line-up of local teenage talent including Hoo8Hoo, Flooke and Doolie to show their support for teenagers Bella Harry and Declan Walker, who are both battling cancer. Declan – a Year 10 student at Pacific Lutheran College – was diagnosed in December with primary mediastinal B-cell lymphoma. Declan’s mum Michelle had to give up
work to be Declan’s carer and the impact on the family has been significant. “We are so grateful for this concert,’’ she says. “The monies raised will go towards ongoing bills and expenses associated with Declan’s treatment and travelling to and from Brisbane. It will also go towards his rehabilitation, including tutoring to help him once he is able to return to school, so he doesn’t fall further behind. We are really humbled by this event being organised for Declan and incredibly grateful.”
Bella – a student at St John’s College in Nambour – has a similar story with diagnosis of bone cancer in her right femur, left hip and shoulder early in 2015. After what her doctor described as ‘brutal’ chemotherapy, Bella had the bottom half of her right femur removed and replaced with an internal titanium prosthetic. This month Bella will have surgery to remove the top half of her left femur and replace it with a prosthetic. Once she has recovered from this operation, she will have her shoulder replaced, making her the first person in the world to have three bones replaced this way. Bella will then continue on chemotherapy for the rest of the year. Bella’s mum, Emma Harry, says the family is incredibly grateful for the support given the emotional and financial strain they have been under. Method: Place the milk and whipping cream in a saucepan. Using the point of a knife, scrape the seeds from the vanilla pod into the saucepan. Add the pod and heat slowly until simmering. Remove from the heat and discard the vanilla pod. Add the chocolate to the cream and milk mixture and stir until completely melted. Place over a bain-marie to keep warm. Slice or cut the fruit into pieces but leave the strawberries whole. Thread the fruit onto metal skewers and serve with individual bowls of the fondue.

B
eing cute and adorable only gets you so far in life. Ask Shirley Temple. Or Nikki Webster. And for sheer cuteness, few cars can match Italy’s iconic ‘Bambino’ – the Fiat 500. The reborn Bambino – an icon of the ‘50s and ‘60s and reimagined into a modern form almost a decade ago, has just undergone an update that further emphasises that it’s more than just a pretty face. The latest Fiat 500 has been improved in just about every way, with Fiat claiming more
than 1800 changes in all. Cabin comfort has been upgraded, there’s a fancy new Uconnect entertainment and information system, including satellite navigation, as well as digital audio and upgraded safety systems. Fiat has also simplified the model line-up somewhat – at least for Australian buyers – by reducing the range to three main choices, utilising what Fiat says are the most popular engine and trim options. The entry-level 500 starts at $18,000 – not cheap for a micro-car like this one, albeit one
that’s nicely kitted out – although Fiat has softened the blow by offering driveaway pricing for an additional $1000 outlay. That price would also get you a start in the next-level Fiat 500 Pop, whose $19k pricetag doesn’t include onroads but does get you some extra features. Topping the range is the 500C Lounge at $22,000 drive away. In all three forms the 500 retains the feel-good, retro vibe that has made it a global fashion accessory, with more than 1.5 million sold over the past decade. But it’s also an outstanding city car – one that you could easily justify purely on the strength of its mechanical excellence, its high standards of presentation and its desirability. The 500 and Pop get a 1.2-litre, fourcylinder petrol engine and the choice of five-speed manual or five-speed ‘Dualogic’ transmission (more of that later). The Lounge gets more power, courtesy of a 1.4-litre, four-cylinder and six-speed manual or five-speed self-shifter. We tested the Lounge and came away enjoying the experience. It’s an engaging little machine, with its perky little engine (pumping out a modest but effective 74kW) – and utilising a character-filled transmission. The Dualogic gearbox isn’t quite an automatic – it’s a ‘robotised manual’ which can be programmed to change gears by itself, or allow the driver to do so using the funky little
shifter on the centre console. It’s most effective in manual mode, where you’re encouraged to blip up and down through the gears using a shifter. Our Lounge test machine was nicely fitted out in terms of technology and comfort items, including classy leather trim. The 500’s market is primarily young, trendy things who’ll love its style, its quality finishes and its fun factor. Cuteness, after all, still counts for something.
FIAT 500 LOUNGE HOW BIG? It’s somewhere between tiny and minute. But there’s ample space in the front for two, and in a pinch you could cram a couple more in the rear. But a family hauler it is not.
HOW FAST? With the upsized 1.4-litre engine our test machine was amply quick, particularly in city traffic. It’s surprisingly solid on the highway, too.
HOW THIRSTY? Official fuel consumption dips as low as 4.8L/100km for manual versions – the automatic is slightly less frugal. HOW MUCH? Even for a car this small, it represents decent value from as low as $18,000 up to $22,000, drive-away, in the flagship model.

tourism is recognised by the scattering of B&Bs and a tourist information centre. Surrounded by farms, particularly pineapples, avocados and macadamia nuts, it was previously more important as a loading centre for farmers. Glass House is still often described as a village, as even though there has been a lot of residential development in the past few decades, (the population doubled between 1991 and 2006) it has held on to its country feel and rural landscape. Some of the credit for that must go to the old Caloundra City Council which set out to ensure that townships retained their identity and did not melt into one long urban strip from Beerburrum to Landsborough. The Glass House district has a land area of 29,674 hectares.

ESTUARY: Quality sized whiting are being taken this week from Goat Island to Cotton Tree with cured worms and yabbies best, on a rising tide. There are good flathead on the drift past Chambers Island and down past the Twin Waters banks. Sand crabs around, so don’t forget you crab pots. SURF: You can find some tailor on the night high tides from Mudjimba to North Shore. Try big baits. There are whiting just down from Alex Surf Club with pippies and cured worms working well. You can get trevally on lures and herring or whitebait at Pincushion. OFFSHORE: Northerlies have slowed down the action, but when the wind swings back to the south, reef fishing improves. Berley is a must if you are anchoring with Murphy’s and Coolum Reefs which are returning sweetlip, parrot and spotted mackerel at dawn and dusk using cut baits. FRESHWATER: Anglers are having a ball catching and releasing bass in Somerset, Lake Baroon and Lake Macdonald. Borumba is looking good for flyfishers, and are having a fantastic time around the lily pads chasing the elusive saratoga during the warm part of the day. Good news from Ewan Maddock Dam as big bass have been reported on plastics, spinner baits or live shrimps. But remember at this dam you need a government license.

Richard O’Leary says to help kids learn, sometimes we just need to get out of their way.
O
ne of the great joys in my life is the opportunity to visit my boys’ classrooms as an observer every six months
or so. I sit on a child-sized chair for half an hour and just watch as my sons go about their days. Last week I watched as my eldest son was given his first lesson on how to divide by two-digit numbers using a set of Scrabble-sized tiles representing the thousands, hundreds, tens and ones. As the teacher knelt on the ground so she could be eye-to-eye with him, one thing stood out to me: it was what she wasn’t saying that was making the difference to how he was learning. When my eight-year-old became stuck on part of the problem, she didn’t tell him what to do. She asked him a question which allowed him to discover the solution for himself. You could just about see the bulb
light up in his brain as he worked it out. She used the same method for the same result as he worked his way through the second problem. It made me think of the times I have tried to ‘help’ my boys, rather than let them work it out for themselves – depriving them
“We can’t make children learn, but we can let them learn” of an opportunity to learn from doing, rather than being told. In her new book, The Gardener and the Carpenter – What the New Science of Child Development Tells Us About the Relationship Between Parents and Children, psychology professor Alison Gopnik argues parents should back off and give their kids room to learn.
“We can’t make children learn, but we can let them learn,” Gopnik says. The carpenter in the title of her book describes a parent who tries to shape the child into a certain type of adult, while the gardener is a parent who provides a nurturing environment so the child can flourish into the person they are meant to be. Performing tests in her Berkeley lab, Gopnik found children intuitively understand concepts like reliability, probability and metaphysics – we just need to provide the opportunities. If Gopnik is right, and who am I to argue with a Berkeley academic, it proves to me something that I’ve suspected for quite some time – I learn a lot more from my children than they learn from me. The most important thing I can do is to love them. And that’s much easier than long division. roleary@myweeklypreview.com.au.
