hen I look back at my childhood I shudder at some of the near disasters, including the time a car missed me by centimetres as I raced across a highway on my bike without a helmet. It was different back then. When I was six I’d walk to school, make my own way to footy training, and go to birthday parties where pass the parcel had just one prize. Parents are more careful now – and justifiably so – but have we gone too far? That’s the question I try to answer in our cover story. Also this week, you get the chance to meet the woman who has just been named as the coach of the Sunshine Coast’s new national netball team, see Paris from the River Seine, and of course there’s plenty of property, including good news for the new home market. CITY TO SURF Carolyn Tucker of Sunshine Beach is an award-winning journalist who is now part of the team bringing the new Maroochydore CBD to life. IF YOU COULD CHANGE ONE THING ON THE COAST, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
FIRST JOB? I had just turned 14 and landed a job in a handbag store in the Brisbane CBD. I took a bus into town one Saturday and went from store to store asking if they had a Saturday morning job available until someone agreed to give me a chance. The unofficial job description was ‘dogsbody’ but that was fine with me. I was pretty determined to join the paid workforce.
I’d like to see a wider range of employment and career opportunities on the Coast, but that will come with the new Maroochydore City Centre. We also need better public transport, and a light rail service connecting key centres on the Coast would be an enormous step forward.
BEST DAY IN YOUR LIFE?
WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY WORKING ON? I’m the marketing and communications manager for SunCentral Maroochydore, the company overseeing design and delivery of the new Maroochydore City Centre. It’s a fantastic job and a privilege to work on such an incredible project.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU LIVED HERE?
WHY DO YOU LIVE HERE? I’ve had a long connection with the Sunshine Coast. My mother grew up in Palmwoods and went to Nambour High, and my family used to holiday at Alexandra Headland when I was a child. As a teenager, I used to take the bus up to Noosa with a school friend whose parents had a holiday house at Little Cove. My husband grew up and went to primary school in Cooroy. When we met in Brisbane, we discovered our mutual love of the Sunshine Coast and would spend as much time here as possible. We had our wedding reception at Harry’s on Buderim and our honeymoon in Noosa. It seemed inevitable that we would wind up here permanently and finally took the plunge in 2002.

Setting aside the usual responses to this question (yes, my wedding day was wonderful), my 40th birthday was pretty special. We spent a few days at the Sheraton Mirage in Port Douglas and had a wonderful dinner at Nautilus Restaurant for my birthday. When Bernie and I returned to our room at the resort, there was a string quartet playing Sweet Caroline under a gazebo beside the lagoon pool. It wasn’t for me – that would have been beyond cheesy. There was a wedding reception nearby and the music was for that function but there was something magical about that moment just the same.
CAN YOU NOMINATE A DAY IN YOUR LIFE THAT TURNED OUT TO BE A TURNING POINT? The day I received a call from the ABC in Brisbane to tell me I’d been selected for a cadetship. It had been quite a lengthy and intimidating process for a new university graduate – first writing an application, being advised that I’d been short-listed, then having to sit a general knowledge exam followed by a three-member panel interview. I was over the moon when I received that call. It set me on a course that defined my career.
YOUR GREATEST REGRET? Not persevering with piano lessons when I was a child. I had no talent whatsoever, but I would like to be able to play today.
YOU ARE HAPPIEST WHEN? I’m sharing bubbles and laughs with my dearest friends, and when I’m walking my dogs on the beach.
ADVICE TO YOUR 18-YEAR-OLD SELF? Buy into the Sydney property market as soon as possible.

LETTING KIDS BE KIDS Is overprotective parenting hampering the healthy development of our children? WORDS: Richard O’Leary
We are in the age of the helicopter gunship parent – someone who hovers near their child to launch pre-emptive strikes against any chance of disappointment
I
’d suggest there’s little chance my boys will ever be called bubble wrap kids – the popular term used to describe children who are quarantined from any potential risks – although they do occasionally enjoy popping the plastic pockets of the packing product. My five- and seven-year-olds are encouraged to climb trees, test themselves at skate parks, scale mountains and attempt other gravity-defying stunts. We send them to a progressive school where independence is encouraged and students are given freedom within limits. But it’s funny how freedom for the child, can easily make the parent feel trapped. When our eldest came home from school last year with a permission slip to go on a three-day camp in Brisbane, we understood at an intellectual level all the benefits it would provide, but there was still a churning in the guts – he’s only six! What if he gets picked on? Will he be safe? How will he handle being in a dorm? Will he remember to brush his teeth? We’d talked the talk, but could we walk the walk? After seeking more information and being reassured that he’d have an older

buddy to look out for him, we agreed he could go and we signed. A few weeks later we waved him off, his little face beaming back at us with the joy of the adventurer. In many ways the first camp is a rite of passage for the parent as much as the child, but it seems many of us are finding it

A study by environmental foundation Planet Ark investigated children’s interaction with nature, in particular outdoor play compared to indoor activity. Seventy-three per cent of respondents played outdoors more often than indoors when they were young compared to only 13
Essentially we are not allowing our kids to do what we did, and that extends beyond a simple measurement of indoors versus outdoors play. A three-year study of parental fears conducted by VicHealth and La Trobe University – entitled Beyond the bubble wrap found that almost half (48 per cent) of parents of children aged nine to 15 are
worried about their child’s safety when they are not with an adult because a stranger might approach them, and around one-third (36 per cent) of parents avoid situations where their child goes without an adult, because they are fearful they would be approached by a stranger. Although this study of more than 2000 parents of children aged nine to 15 across Victoria only concentrated on the independent play and travel allowed by parents, there are far wider implications created by these attitudes of fear according to former school teacher Dan Haesler, who has become a leadership coach, and a critic of parents who wrap their kids in cotton wool. COVER STORY for their kid falling over when running in the playground – rather than teaching a kid to run properly (laughter) or watch where they are going. “As a PE teacher I’d help run swimming carnivals and I’d have parents ring in complaining their kid had not won a ribbon. So, I’d explain their daughter had come sixth – and that wasn’t seen [by the parent] as a reason for her not to get a ribbon. “It’s this idea that every kid gets a prize. You see it with little kids when they do pass the parcel. When you and I played pass the parcel as kids I’m betting there was just one present in the middle, and sometimes it was a rubbish present. Now, every kid gets a prize and I’ve even heard of kids complaining the present they get is not good enough. I’ll give you another one – musical chairs where you have the same amount of chairs as there are kids. So everyone gets to sit down (laughter). “Don’t get me wrong – every kid is special, every kid is wonderful – but we tend to blur the line between every kid thinking they should have a cake walk through life, and everything should be smooth for them. I think parents, often unwittingly buy into this.” He says these artificial cocoons are constricting the development of our children. “I often speak to parents and they want their kids to be happy all the time. For me – the first thing I point out is that to be happy all the time is in itself a mental health condition. The 2015 Australian Child and Adolescent Survey of Mental Health and Wellbeing conducted in the homes of over 6,300 families revealed that almost one in seven (13.9 per cent) of children aged four to 17 had mental disorders in the previous 12 months. This is equivalent to 560,000 Australian children and adolescents. Males were more likely than females to have experienced mental disorders in the 12 months prior to the survey (16.3 per cent compared with 11.5 per cent). It’s open to debate whether or not the rise of a generation of kids too scared to take chances has contributed to the alarming
rates of mental disorders in our children, but Dr Jennifer Hart, a lecturer in Early Childhood Education at the University of the Sunshine Coast, says boys in particular are being harmed by society’s propensity to be overprotective – and she’s called for the gloves to come off. Hart wants schools to allow some rough play to improve the way young boys learn and behave in classrooms. “It could be sword fighting, light sabres,

just wrestling around, rough and tumble play, superhero play, gun fighting, play fighting – generally it’s whatever the boys decide to call it.” “By allowing boys to engage boys in playful aggression, opens up opportunities for developing skills that they may not necessarily have. Opportunities to particularly develop social skills because this type of play is between friends. The stronger the friendship the more intense the physical actions are. If it’s your best mate you’re going to punch him a little bit
harder. This is how they express care and empathy for one another.” “When two mates punch and shove it’s the equivalent of two girls giving a hug and saying – how are you doing today.” And if the rough play goes too far and someone gets hurt? “There’s some miscommunication in what’s happening. That’s where it’s important to have guidelines, and to involve the children to develop rules and boundaries about what is considered playful and what is considered not playful behaviour. And help them develop those verbal cues – literally saying ‘stop – I don’t like that’ – and all the players stop.” And what happens if you don’t let boys be boys? “They are going to have pent-up energy for sure. It sends them a mixed message that their play choice is not appropriate because as adults we say that’s too rough or that’s too dangerous. “We’re removing risk-taking and play behaviour. The research shows the social, emotional development of boys thrives with this type of play.” It’s the sort of play welcomed by former PE teacher Haesler. He also wants to see kids climb trees, ride bikes around the local neighbourhood, and race against their mates – even if they don’t get a ribbon for finishing sixth. “I’m not saying to be stupid about it. I think we’ve pulled too hard on the reins. We’re stealing some of the experiences you and I would have had by just being out there and learning for ourselves. “We’ve over-regulated childhood in a way. We expect that we can teach kids how to be resilient, we can teach kids how to problem solve, just by telling them rather than allowing them to get in these situations by themselves.” And our son’s school camp? His buddy ditched him after the first night to hang out with older friends. But our boy made new mates, was the first to volunteer for every activity, brushed his teeth at least once and walked off that bus looking a few centimetres taller.
GET RID OF THE BUBBLE WRAP • Go on a nature walk. Smell flowers or hug a tree. Look for animal footprints. Watch insects. But remember, soaking up the smells, sounds and sights is sufficient, and leave only footprints behind. • Go on an adventure bike ride. Simply enjoy riding in the fresh air. • Create an obstacle course. This could be indoors or outdoors, and you could use trees to run around, a pile of leaves to jump over, a stick ladder on the lawn. • Visit a local lookout, hill or mountain. See the world from a different view. Talk about how birds and animals see the world differently to us. Roll down the hill. • Go camping. Set a date to go camping with your family. Sunshine Plaza is set to undergo a $400 million facelift with the project gaining final approval this week. The centre will grow from 73,000 square metres to more than 107,000 square metres and feature a David Jones department store, Big W, refurbished Myer, new Amaroo Street mall entrance and more than 100 new speciality stores. Construction is expected to start this month with work on a new carpark, with the entire project set to be completed by December 2018. Around 2900 jobs will be created during construction.

AURA ON TRACK Stockland is accelerating the development of future stages of its $5 billion masterplanned city of Aura. Two local civil contractors, Shadforths Civil Contractors and Hall Contracting, have been appointed to ensure earthworks and civil works are on track. Sunshine Coast Stockland regional manager Ben Simpson says more than 500 lots are under construction. Meanwhile, the 2.8-kilometre stretch of the first stage of the $115 million Bells Creek Arterial Road, which will link to Aura’s first suburb, is on schedule and expected to be opened to motorists by the end of the year.

Sunshine Coast building approvals are at their highest level in seven years, with the Sunshine Coast Council issuing $1.29 billion of approvals in the 2015/16 financial year. The approval figure is 11 per cent higher compared to the $1.17 billion of building approvals issued in the previous financial year. The council’s Development Indictors Annual Highlights report indicates the current approval figures include $701 million in new dwellings (up 15 per cent compared to 2014/15), $203 million for multiple unit dwellings (up 19 per cent) and $156 million in additions and alterations (up 141 per cent).

Star netball coach Noeline Taurua reveals why her new role is a perfect fit both professionally and personally. Words: Leigh Robshaw
N
ew Zealand netball coach Noeline Taurua is starting a new life on the Sunshine Coast and she’s excited for more reasons than one. The ANZ Championship coach was recently appointed inaugural head coach of the Melbourne Storm and University of the Sunshine Coast (USC) backed netball franchise. The chance to coach the Sunshine Coast’s first national elite sporting team is a major professional highlight, but it also means she’ll see more of her five children than she’s seen in the past 16 years. “The good thing with me coming over here is it’s the first time in 16 years that I’ll actually be living and working in the same area,” she says. “I have four girls and a boy – my youngest is eight. I’m usually away for between seven and eight months of the year, on and off sporadically. This means I can do some of the things with my children I haven’t been able to do, and just be there. That’s a big thing for me and my family.” Taurua says while her youngest daughter is just starting to show an interest in netball, her other children aren’t so keen. “They’ll do any sport other than netball,” she laughs. “They link it with me being away. It’s been hard for my husband too – he’s come to the stage where he wants to expand his own career and be free. When I’m not there he takes the load, which is actually big. We’re all ready for a change.” Securing Taurua’s services for two years is a significant coup for the Sunshine Coast team, with the former Silver Fern in hot demand around the world at the conclusion of the ANZ Championship season.
Taurua hails from Mount Maunganui, on New Zealand’s North Island and says the Coast reminds her a little of home. “It’s just absolutely stunning and beautiful here and obviously bigger,” she says. “It has the same holiday feel as Mount Maunganui but not the hustle and bustle of a city. It feels like quite a close community. It all happened very fast and I feel like I’ve been blessed to come to a place like the Sunshine Coast. It’s amazing to be here and to be under the support of the Melbourne Storm, a really professional sporting
organisation. I only signed the contract ten days ago but just the learning I’ve had within a short space of time has taken me up another notch compared to what I was used to.” Taurua began playing netball at the age of nine, won a silver medal in the 1998 Commonwealth Games playing for the New Zealand Silver Ferns, and moved into coaching after two knee injuries in 1999. “It wasn’t really an occupational career I was heading towards but sometimes opportunities arise,” she says. “What I really enjoy is the challenge of working with people and getting them to perform on a given day. There’s an art to coaching and a lot that goes behind it, scientifically. “It’s about people. I’ve always had this motto that if you have happy people, you have happy players. It’s about the players’ growth and development, it’s about creating an environment that cares for them and also challenges them to be the best. It’s also about how they work with others, both on and off the court. You have to have some technical nous as a coach, but I believe it’s about people management. “Coaching overseas has always been one of my goals and with the highly-regarded Melbourne Storm picking up the reins of the first ever national elite level sport’s team to represent the Sunshine Coast, the timing was perfect to be part of a new venture and new era for netball. “It doesn’t get any more exciting than moving to a new country to coach a brand-new team in a groundbreaking competition. For that I am grateful and relishing the opportunity.”

Sami Muirhead has had one of those weeks, but a few hours on the beach with her family puts it all into perspective.

I
went to my friend’s dear mum’s funeral and I wore red. Bright red. With boots. Not a good look for such a sad occasion. I had the busiest morning and didn’t even stop to look at myself in the mirror. By the time I dress the little people and push them out of the car each morning, it is a miracle I don’t do the school drop-off in a bra and undies. Then the bad week continued. I smashed the car. Again. Only a scrape, but you know, the panel beating bills are adding up my friends. Then I thought the tide had turned. I felt so smug because my husband and I gathered up our three kids and a friend’s child and we headed off to the Mooloolaba Surf Club for their Nippers sign-on day. I felt smug for several reasons. I am so proud we are actually going to sacrifice Sunday mornings of Nutella pancakes (you must try them before you judge me) and dancing at home in our pyjamas so our five-year-old can learn essential surf safety skills. Parents of the year. Giving up gluttony and a really lazy ritual for our child’s growth and gain. I felt extra smug because we took a friend’s child. This mum helps me every week and drives my daughter to dancing. Without her my girl could not go to ballet class as I am at work. It felt so good to at last repay the favour in a small way. So we herded our delightful but feral
children into two cars and rocked up with our three Aldi bags bulging with towels, sunscreen, changes of clothing, sneakers, hats, nappies and enough fruit to feed a small country. I have no doubt we looked like a little family of circus people in transit. Into the reception I strutted. And you know what? The beautiful Sue who works at the door on Sunday mornings told me
“…we are actually going to sacrifice Sunday mornings” ever so nicely that sign-on day is next weekend. Fail. Epic fail. That parent of the year award was stripped from me immediately. I gulped and turned a little red with embarrassment. We are probably not sending out a signal that we are the family you want in your surf club. But every wave has a frothy silver lining. We spent several blissful hours on the quiet beach thinking how lucky we are to live here on the Coast. I have a new plan for more calm in my life that involves better planning the night before. My girlfriend of course didn’t care what colour I wore to her mum’s funeral. The panel beating bill is minor. Sometimes you just need to get back to nature for the world to stop spinning so fast.

Special skills: Water assaults at high speed, sparkling personality. Weakness: Constantly needs to go to the chemist to restock. Even the slightest criticism rocks him to the core. Name: Robert Allenby. Codename: Back Nine. Special skills: Can do unspeakable things in order to help the squad and will have literally no memory of them later on. Give this bloke

The high sugar content gives dried fruit its bad name, but you can still enjoy it as a healthy snack, writes James Colquhoun from Food Matters.

ried fruit has receive plenty of bad press lately – and sometimes for good reason. Dried fruit is any particular fresh fruit that has had the water removed either naturally, through sun drying, or by using a dehydrator. This concentrates the sugar content, giving dried fruit its trademark sweet flavour. As healthy and nutritious as a piece of fruit is, once dried, it becomes more energy dense. It is also very easy to eat dried fruit in large amounts – resulting in excess sugar and calorie intake. However, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t have dried fruit at all. Let’s look at some of the nutritional benefits found in my favourite dried fruits. Dates – a rich source of dietary fibre, helping to reduce LDL cholesterols. Dates are also a good source of iron, manganese and vitamin B6. Figs – rich in calcium, magnesium, potassium and manganese. Apricots – contains almost half your

daily intake of vitamin A and is a rich source of iron. Always opt for brown or black organic apricots, as the orange colour is due to a sulphate-based preservatives. Prunes – contain B vitamins and are a well-known home remedy for stimulating the bowels. Prunes are also a good source of iron. Sultanas – a good source of potassium and manganese, they are the perfect snack. Mangoes – contain a powerful punch of vitamin A and C, both important for immunity. Eaten with awareness – and not thrown down like a bag of potato chips – dried fruits are a nutritious, healthy, sweet snack-on-the-go. Case Study: 30 years of Depression explained. Within weeks she felt happy, motivated and amazed to get her life back. A patient in her early 30’s attended the clinic having suffered symptoms of depression for most of her adult life and anxiety throughout her childhood. Suffering with symptoms of poor motivation, sadness, anxiety and insomnia, exhaustion then caused anger and irritability. She had responded to an ad about depression and was curious about learning what could be the underlying reasons, to finally address them thoroughly. No emotional events or trauma had occurred during her life to cause her condition, so biochemical factors were reviewed extensively. After taking a full history, pathology to investigate inflammation, genetic conditions, infection, digestion, nutrients, hormone’s and brain chemical levels, the causes became clear. Having travelled extensively with her family, living in various countries throughout her childhood, so contracting certain bacteria in water overseas was a potential problem, having the capacity to cause symptoms of depression, and so were investigated. We also found she was moody, with bouts of sleepiness, and fogginess throughout the day, usually indicating a relationship with food. Blood tests also confirmed two genetic conditions that did not allow her to produce brain chemicals adequately without supplementation of certain nutrients, very simple to treat, though if undetected creates further health problems. This problem alone if untreated lowers the immune system, allowing a lifetime of susceptibility to infections, and poor digestion with allergies becoming common. Food reactions cause symptoms of depression, anxiety, irritability, insomnia and low thyroid function. The liver detoxifies the offending food, by using enzymes which are also involved in making serotonin in the brain resulting in low moods. One of these enzymes is responsible for producing melatonin for sleep, so insomnia follows. The thyroid function drops during a food reaction, reducing progesterone, creating oestrogen dominance, PMS, menopausal symptoms, mood swings and more. After treatment, starting a diet tailored to her test results, raising serotonin, melatonin, and dopamine naturally, and treating her genetic conditions, she began to feel happier than she’d ever felt. Like all difficult and complex tasks, it is best to break it down to smaller, more achievable jobs you can check off one by one. Once you have checked them all off you can sit back and relax. The process is much the same when dealing with your investments. We have put together a handy list to follow for a portfolio spring clean. We call it an annual review.
STEP 1 Reflect on what you want to achieve. Think about what may have changed in your financial situation that requires you to reassess your goals. What level of income do

OPERA + CIRCUS = FUN Step right up, under the starlight of nature’s big top at Kings Beach and experience the wonders of the circus. Cirque de la Opera will feature aerial acrobatics, magic, enchanting dance and the story of a helpless romantic clown. The program is specifically designed to appeal to a wide demographic of music tastes, from modern day musicals and popular songs to excerpts from some of the world’s best known operas.
The free family-friendly event is at the Kings Beach Amphitheatre on September 3. There will be roving entertainment from 6pm and the Unity College dance group will perform at 6.30pm in the lead-up to the main event.
The Safe Child Africa Ball is being held this weekend to raise funds and awareness of the issues faced by the 15,000 Nigerian children who have been accused of practicing witchcraft. Sponsored by Smart City Vocational College and hosted by charity group, Safe Child Africa, the event will raise money to assist in developing a new housing facility in Nigeria.
The ball is on August 20 at the Sebel Pelican Waters Golf Resort and Spa at 7pm. Tickets are $99 and 100 per cent of money raised will go towards the project. Sunshine Brass in conjunction with the Buderim Concert Band are presenting a concert, Magnificent Musical Moments, at the Maroochy RSL Events Centre this weekend.
Admission is $15 and tickets are available at the door. The concert begins at 1.30pm.

W
ork hard. Aim high. Never give up. They’re the values we try to teach our kids - that nothing succeeds like persistence and hard work. You might not be the smartest or most talented, but if you’re willing to put in the hard yards – and keep plugging away – you’ll eventually get what you desire. I couldn’t help thinking about that analogy while driving Audi’s all-new A4 sedan. This latest A4 reflects all that hard work
and dogged persistence. This latest model is effectively the ninth generation of the A4 and while it doesn’t look all that different to the model it replaces, there’s a world of difference once you hear that satisfying thud of the driver’s door closing. It boasts new engines and a welter of new electronic aides. But above all else, it drives like no Audi that’s come before. There’s always been much to admire about Audi’s road-holding and ride capabilities – centred around the company’s
signature Quattro all-wheel-drive system. But the A4 finally couples that with the best steering feel and feedback of any car we’ve driven from the German maker. The drivetrain is a cracker. We drove the top-spec 2.0 TFSI quattro, which delivers an entertaining, thoroughly adequate 185kW and a gutsy 370Nm of low-down pulling power – while sipping a modest 6.3L/100km. Driven through a smooth, quick-shifting seven-speed dual-clutch S-Tronic transmission, and of course putting the power through all four wheels – it’s as close to an ideal drivetrain as you could wish for in this type of machine. We put that part of the A4’s personality to the test on a lengthy weekend getaway. It’s when you point it at a series of corners that this A4 really shows its colours. Razor-sharp steering, wonderful feedback through the chunky, flat-bottomed sports steering wheel and effortless poise and balance through each change of direction. Audi has recently become a class-leader in interior presentation – and the A4’s cabin rivals the standards set by the muchawarded, class-leading C-Class. The highlight is the “virtual cockpit” – a 12.3-inch colour video display that replaces the traditional instrument panel with a customisable, amazingly versatile screen. All models boast emergency braking, an
“exit warning” system that stops you opening doors into oncoming traffic, cyclists or obstacles; blind-spot warning, pre-sense pre-collision system and rearview camera. It adds up to a package that shows the benefits of persistence. Take a lesson, kids. Work hard, don’t give up and success can be yours. Maybe you’ll even be lucky enough to drive an Audi A4.
AUDI A4 2.0 TFSI QUATTRO HOW BIG? As with rivals in this compact segment, it offers enough space for four adults or a family with three kids. Bootspace is also impressive.
HOW FAST? We tested the most powerful variant, which will reach the speed limit in just over five seconds. Other, cheaper models aren’t as quick, but are more frugal.
HOW THIRSTY? The two-litre, turbocharged engine we drove manages 6.3L/100km – less powerful variant sips 5.3L/100km. The diesel is best at 4.6L/100km. HOW MUCH? Prices start from the mid-50s for the entrylevel models, although most buyers will probably opt for the quattro versions starting from $66,900.

Australia’s leading property watchdog, which is the only national industry association for building professionals, says the latest ABS figures on housing finance show that new home lending saw a healthy rise during June. In addition, new home sales ended the 2015/16 financial year on a high note. The HIA New Home Sales Report – a survey of Australia’s largest volume builders – indicates that the increase of 8.2 per cent in June highlights the resilience of this particular property sector. “The overall profile of HIA New Home Sales is signalling an orderly correction to national new home construction in the short term, as are other leading housing indicators,� says HIA chief conomist Harley Dale. The report comes as the number of home loans to owner occupiers for dwelling construction rose by 2.1 per cent, in seasonally adjusted terms, in June. Loans for the purchase of new homes saw a comfortable growth of 2.7 per cent, according to the report.

FISHING REPORT with Wayne Nilsson from Maroochydore Fishing World
ESTUARY: Whiting to 500 grams are taking live worms and yabbies along Twin Waters and around Goat Island. You can get flathead on the drift from Maroochy Bar to Twin Waters using lures and live bait. There are trevally and jew at the Motorway bridge - use pillies and plastics with heavy jig heads. SURF: There are plenty of dart in low tide gutters along Kawana and Maroochy beaches with pippies the best bait. Sand whiting are taking beach worms from Mudjimba to North Shore. There are flathead at Maroochy Bar. You can get tailor at Pincushion using pillies just after dark. OFFSHORE: There are mixed reef fish around the Blinker and out to Murphy’s Reef. The southern end of Barwon Banks is firing for pearl perch, snapper, moses perch and parrot. Try drifting in the deeper water using micro jigs. Bait has been moving about, but when located the sailfish and cobia are there. Water temp is 22 degrees out on the Fifty Metre Line. Whales and dolphins are putting on a show at present.

LESSONS FROM THE OLYMPICS Richard O’Leary says science has caught up with a theory he stumbled upon while living in a share house in the ‘90s.
I
discovered perspective is everything when I lived in a share house with my youngest brother and a couple of mates in the mid-90s. In that terrace in Leichhardt we would come up with some wild ideas, ingenious plots and fascinating insights. Although when I look back, none of those ideas were turned into actions, the elaborate schemes were never carried out, and few of those lightbulb moments withstood the first light of morning. Probably no great loss – we were just young blokes finding our way. Although I do wish we had followed through with our idea to start a T-shirt business – if only because we had the perfect name – Perspective Is Everything – which was quickly shortened to P-I-E. It became a mantra of ours. Whenever someone came home from work complaining about this or that – someone would reply P-I-E.

P-I-E was also the go-to response when our parents criticised our great wall of pizza boxes or the giant clumps of mould that hung from our walls. And it now seems that modern science has caught up with our pronouncements on P-I-E. David Matsumoto from the San Francisco State University used a high-speed camera to capture the faces of athletes immediately after judo medal matches at the Olympics. What he was found was in the unguarded
moments straight after victory or defeat, and before the athletes managed to put their game faces on, all competitors responded in much the same way: smiles in victory, and frowns in defeat – proving that our reactions are nature rather than nurture. Not surprising you may say. But he also looked at the reactions of athletes on the dais as they received their medals, and discovered something really interesting. Gold medal winners wore huge smiles, as you would expect, as did those who had won bronze. But silver medal winners had forced grins – their mouths were upturned but the eyes didn’t crinkle at the edges. Why? Matsumoto’s hypothesis is the silver medallists are thinking about what could have been – ‘I was so close to gold’. While the bronze medallists are so happy because they are grateful – ‘I was so close to nothing’. The exception to the rule was bronze medallists who had won at the previous world championships and were favourites for gold, but had to settle for a bronze.
