FIRST JOB? My first job was as an assistant dance teacher when I was a dance student myself. Far from the science career I have now.
There was a day when I was given the opportunity to trial in a job I had always wanted (my dream career) but after a day exposed to the role, realised it was a job I would be miserable doing – so I changed paths and am now very happily working in a job I LOVE.
WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY WORKING ON? I am using molecular biology to understand the neuropeptides responsible for reproductive physiology in the crown-of-thorns starfish, which are in plaguing populations on the Great Barrier Reef and contributing to the extensive coral loss the reef is experiencing.
YOUR GREATEST REGRET? Not taking a gap year between secondary and tertiary education.
YOUR FAMILY INCLUDES. . . Because I live far away from my parents, I am lucky enough to have a ‘family’ of friends on the coast. And I have my wonderful partner Mitch and my pet fish.
WHAT ACHIEVEMENT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF? I am proud of everything I have achieved so far. I have gained great work experience, travelled to amazing places, put myself through university to obtain a Bachelor of Biomedical Science, Bachelor of Science Honours, Graduate Certificate of Biotechnology and now a PhD in Molecular Biology. I think all of those things are something to be proud of.
WHAT ARE YOU READING NOW? I am consumed with science articles at the moment. Primarily for my own research but I enjoy reading about the newest science and technology innovations and discoveries.

I always take people to the Noosa National Park, Kondalilla Falls and some secret favourite spots.
I was born and raised in a small town along the coast of south-east Victoria and once I finished my secondary education moved to the Sunshine Coast to combine my university studies with a beachside lifestyle.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE ON THE SUNSHINE COAST? I am torn between the coves of Noosa National Park and the waterfalls throughout the hinterland – the coast has so many amazing places.
HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH IT? I need to take a moment to refocus and settle myself before analysing the situation and trying to achieve productive and positive solutions.
IF YOU COULD CHANGE ONE THING ON THE COAST, WHAT WOULD IT BE? Personally, I would reduce the development of estates and colonisation (despite the economic benefit it is said to bring). I would love to preserve the natural habitats of the Coast and keep it in a naturally pristine condition. The expansive natural space to enjoy is what attracted me to the Coast. I would hate to see it overdeveloped and overcrowded.
IF YOU COULD TELL YOUR 18 YEAR-OLD SELF ANYTHING, WHAT WOULD IT BE? Uphold a strong work ethic but allow yourself time to enjoy life. Travel, explore, value your education, volunteer and involve yourself in the community and groups you believe in. The world is your playground – so appreciate and respect it.

Recently I travelled around Iceland where I experienced seeing the Aurora Borealis (the Northern Lights). It was very special.

DON’T LET THE TEAM DOWN It may seem crazy to stick with one footy team no matter what, but you can blame it on thousands of years of evolution. WORDS: Richard O’Leary

A
re you are a sports fan, or a fanatic? I may have discovered the secret to answering that question during a recent office discussion about the rugby league team I follow, the Parramatta Eels. For those of you unaware of the trials and tribulations of the blue and golds this year, it started with the National Rugby League ruling that the club’s administrators had rorted the salary cap – in other words, they were accused of cheating the system, which is supposed to keep the competition even. But it was not my defence of the indefensible that showed I’d crossed the line from fan to fanatic, it was my use of language. A fan would say, “Everyone is doing it, Parramatta just got caught”, whereas I said “Everyone is doing it, WE just got caught”. I hadn’t even realised I’d phrased it that way until a work colleague pointed it out. The assumed proprietorship of the team had pushed me over the thin white chalk line that separates fans and the fanatics. It’s not the first time I’ve used a personal pronoun to talk about my team. I remember in Year 10, during a heated debate in the schoolyard with a Canterbury-Bankstown fan (is there any other form of conversation between Eels and Bulldogs supporters?) I said

‘we’ instead of Parramatta. He replied, “You don’t play for them.” I’d never really thought of it that way. Of course I had never played for them, and by that stage I knew I never would, but I felt part of the team, part of the tribe. On a rational level, I get how silly it is to get an emotional attachment to a footy side, or any other sporting team for that matter. I get how weird it is to get worked up about it. When you take a step back, there’s not
ones who were on my team but now play for other clubs, I hope they lose. Those players from other clubs who now play for my team, I support like they have always been a member of the family. Crazy stuff. When I look back, the only constant over the past three decades and hundreds of games has been the team’s colours. So in reality I really support the colours blue and gold (which are really blue and yellow).

Is this normal? Well, it appears so. Maybe. Lecturer in Psychology at the University of the Sunshine Coast, Dr Rachael Sharman says it’s all about being part of a tribe – and it’s as old as humans themselves. “In human relationships we form groups based on all sorts of characteristics: sex,
profession or sporting team and that’s what we call an in-group. And by definition, anyone who falls outside of the in-group is in the out-group. “Back in caveman days it started with family groups, but now you can find racial based groups, gender based groups, you can find all sorts of groups based on shared characteristics. “It helps with identity, and helps to motivate people to work towards common goals. It also, if we go back to warfare days, it’s really important to feel part of a common purpose and a goal and that’s shared by members of the same group. “From the evolutionary aspect, it’s about warfare more than anything else. Your current footy teams can be thought of as the modern day version of soldiers on the battlefield. “I think you can pretty much assume this is genetically engineered in us now. We do seem to have this need to belong to groups to start with and to compete with other groups, and it’s much better that we do that on the sporting field than on the battlefield.” Nathan ‘Nugget’ Dell, self-confessed sports fanatic, who has his own sports program on Zinc 96.1 every Saturday morning is also someone who says ‘we’ when he is talking about his teams. myweeklypreview.com.au

COVER STORY “I well and truly do feel like that for most of my teams – not so much the Queensland Reds, I talk about them more like a cousin I see once a year at Christmas – but the other teams absolutely. You ride the winds, you feel the success, but when they get beaten there’s a level of heartbreak because this is something you invest yourself in heart and soul, and when it doesn’t go your way it’s devastating.” “You go back to Roman times and people had their favourite gladiators. I think we’re a bit like that. If we could sit in a crowd and put our thumbs up or down to decide whether the lions come out, people would go for it.” He says his addiction to sport can be explained incredibly simply: it has the same effect as a mind altering drug. “It’s that tribalism. That team, that’s our tribe, that’s our group, they’re an indelible part of our life. When they’ve been successful we’ve been successful. When they’re terrible we’ve had a shocker. It’s just a given. “If your team gets done on a Sunday afternoon, hypothetically Parramatta gets beaten by Penrith, and you’re a Parramatta fan, not that anyone would admit to that, it might make your Mondayitis just a little heavier.” Sharman says it’s not all in his mind. “If you are talking about 2000 years ago in Roman times, the front line was literally what protected you against the barbarians. So if they broke through the front line you were going to meet the same fate as the soldiers, so we do tend to hang on to that importance, even though – and this will come as a shock to you Richard – but nobody is going to die if Parramatta loses (ha ha). But we still hang on to those really strong, passionate attachments and feelings about it.” A study by the University of Georgia and the University of Utah found testosterone levels in males rose by 25 per cent when their team won, with a similar reduction when their team lost. In other words, while our support for teams may be a mental construct, it has physical impacts. Another study, this one by the University of Illinois, showed fans watching their team had high levels of physical arousal, including
changes in brain waves, perspiration, breathing and heart rate. So how do we go about choosing these teams that can have such a big influence on our moods and physical wellbeing? Dell just believes he was born that way. “One of my earliest memories as a kid is watching sport and football. I think there is nearly an in utero style indoctrination, it gets passed down the gene pool I think. And although it’s not an exact science, he may not be too far off the mark.

Dr Rudi Meir in his doctorate Tribalism, team brand loyalty, team brand value and personal/group identity in professional rugby football, questioned more than 1600 selfproclaimed fans of either English or Australian professional rugby union and rugby league teams. In Australia, family links to a team were the best predictor of which team a supporter would follow (29 per cent), while where people lived was also a major factor (25 per cent). But Sharman says there can be other factors at play as well.
“If you’ve grown up in that environment where you are encouraged to attach to a particular group, of course the link will be strong. But it’s also how often it’s reinforced and how passionate your parents and family and friends are.” She says while this passion may have many benefits: a sense of identity, a feeling of being part of something bigger than yourself, and a common ground for communication – it can also have an uglier side. “When footballers behave badly, if they are part of your team you tend to make excuses for that, but, if they’re part of another team you think it’s absolutely outrageous, and something needs to be done immediately about that person.” It can also lead to hatred of the ‘out crowd’. In his book Jesus for the Non-Religious American, Theologian John Shelby Spong talks about a trip to New Zealand where he saw a local wearing a T-shirt with the words: “I root for two teams: New Zealand and whoever is playing Australia. In rugby league you replace Australia with Manly, while in the AFL Collingwood is the team to hate. In other countries, that animosity can spill over into violence and even death, but Australians tend to be a little more relaxed about their sporting grudges. Dell goes as far as to suggest that it may even be going the other way and some fans are adopting other teams as part of their sporting family. “I reckon what the second team principle is, is almost insurance against disappointment,” Dell says. “The most commonly heard statement in the National Rugby League is I go for – insert team here – but my second team is the Cowboys. Everyone seems to be a secondary Cowboys fan. I reckon that’s a bit of a human response. So if my tribe doesn’t do so well, I’ve got a back-up one and I can jump on their bandwagon if and when I need to. I think that principle is fascinating.” Now that doesn’t sit quite right for someone who has followed the blue and golds for most of his life – although I would like to see the Sharks win this year – or should I say the sky blue and blacks.

GUIDE DOG ROADSHOW Millwell Road Community Centre, Maroochydore On Thursday July 28, Barry the Guide Dog-in-training was the special guest at a unique roadshow event that gave locals a taste of the technologies and services available to assist blind and vision impaired residents with their daily living. The event offered a range of hands-on activities and information sessions for both sighted and vision impaired attendees. Barry gave vision impaired attendees the chance to experience how much better life can be with a guide dog. He was also available to meet and greet guests when out of his harness.

The Australian Paralympic Committee announced the 2016 Australian Paralympic swimming team at the University of the Sunshine Coast on Monday. A total of 36 athletes were selected and two-time Paralympian and reigning world champion Brenden Hall was in attendance. USC was chosen as the location for the announcement because the USC Spartans Swimming Squad has seven athletes in the Paralympic team, the highest number of any swimming squad in the country.
Dicky Beach is in line for a makeover with Sunshine Coast Council last week releasing its draft plan for the upgrade. Proposed landscape features that commemorate the SS Dicky include a hull-shaped viewing platform memorial, seating and sculptural elements inspired by barnacles. QantasLink will begin seasonal direct flights between Melbourne and the Sunshine Coast during the upcoming summer holiday period, following the success of the direct Sydney services launched last year. The airline will operate four return flights per week between the regions from December 16, 2016 to January 21, 2017. Mayor Mark Jamieson welcomed the new flights, saying they are a win for residents looking to travel to Victoria as well as holidaymakers from the southern states planning on visiting the Coast.

RUN TO PARADISE It takes hard work and persistence to run a marathon – the same qualities Sunshine Coast Marathon founder Gary Binet has applied to his work and family life to achieve success and happiness. Words: Leigh Robshaw
M
udjimba man Gary Binet started his working life sweeping floors at McDonalds at the age of 17. Today, he employs 550 people as the owner of five McDonalds franchises on the Coast and is one of the founders of the popular Sunshine Coast Marathon. Through the marathon, Binet’s efforts benefit thousands of people – the marathon participants, the families of sick children who stay at Ronald McDonald House, and the many other charities the marathon supports. But you won’t catch him big-noting himself. “I call myself Mr Average,” he says. “I liked the cross country at school, but I was average at it. I’m average height, average weight, average at running a business. I just turn up more than other people.” But what Binet and his team have achieved is anything but average. Since its inception in 2012, the marathon has raised more than $750,000 for over 90 charities and community groups. The aim this year – the event’s fifth birthday – is to hit the $1 million mark in overall funds raised. The idea for the event came about when Binet ran the Las Vegas Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon with two mates, Greg Biggs and Jason Crowther, six years ago. Binet and Biggs had been searching for a long-term fundraising idea for Ronald McDonald House and as they were all runners, they hit upon the idea of staging a marathon that would take advantage of the Sunshine Coast’s stunning scenery. “It was Greg’s idea,” says Binet, reluctant to take the credit. “My thought was I wanted a model that was sustainable as a not-for-profit organisation and didn’t rely solely on my time, because the thing needs to go for a hundred years – it needs to be perpetual. I engaged Jason Crowther, who does event oranisation. He was willing to organise the event for a small fee, and that’s how we got started. “I’ve done other fundraisers but you burn out. We just wanted a model where we could balance our lifestyles with contributing. If it continues, we’ve set it up the right way. That means people think it’s a good vehicle. That would be the real satisfaction, if we weren’t here and the event still ran. “In our initial discussions we asked, do we do a fun run, do we do a ten-kilometre run? The reason we chose marathon is because it’s the one with the history. Marathon is an iconic event, it’s not a fad. The marathon has been around for a couple of centuries. The Rio Olympics marathon is on the same day as ours.” Binet, Biggs and Crowther have faced many obstacles in
2015 winner Samuel Woldeamanuel with Gary Binet staging the event – which is the largest single-day event on the Coast. Getting the course approved by the Department of Transport and Main Roads in the first year was a massive challenge, says Binet. “These events are very expensive to run. A lot of money goes to closing the roads, paying the police. We do need thousands of people on the start line. Unless we are past our break even point, the event just can’t happen.” Binet has risen to the numerous challenges in the same way he has approached his career – with a mindset of persistence and hard work. “You just turn up every day and do the best job you can,” he says. “There’s no silver bullet and no special recipe. Be good to the people around you. Take advice and be mentored. But more than anything, it’s persistence. I’m not unusual, I don’t do crazy hours. You’ve got to be balanced in life, otherwise how can you achieve what you want to achieve?” The persistence that has seen him stay with one company for 30 years and pull off one of the Coast’s biggest events is also
apparent in his personal life. “I’ve been married to the same woman for 23 years,” he says proudly. “I don’t change jobs, don’t change wives, don’t change children. Loyalty and stability are important. If you’re lucky enough to have it, it’s a blessing.” Binet took up running partly because he wanted to model a healthy lifestyle for his three kids, who are 18, 19 and 22. “You wake up and you’re 35 years old and you go, I’m just going to run a marathon. So you start training for it. I ran the Melbourne marathon in 2003 and I’ve run six marathons. “Staying fit and healthy, being focused, achieving a goal – I’ve tried to pass these things onto my kids. You get your kids into being fit and healthy; they’re all runners at some level. They’ve learnt they can pull on their runners and go out the door, clear the head or lose some weight. Running is one of those things you can do anywhere in the world. You don’t even need runners, you can run in the soft sand in board shorts. You don’t need a fancy bike or goggles, you just need to run.” In October, Binet will head to the US with a group of 25 McDonalds franchisees to run the Chicago Marathon, another big fundraiser for Ronald McDonald House. But for now, he’s focused on pulling off another successful Sunshine Coast Marathon, with a turnout of 7000 expected. “We’re still working hard – if we could get between 12,000 and 15,000 people for our 10th anniversary, we’d be ecstatic. “The local community has been exceptionally positive about the event,” he says. “I believe they want to see it grow. There’s drawbacks in some ways because there are some traffic issues, but by and large, the Alex community has been very positive. We do affect about ten kilometres of road and we are very conscious that it affects people. All the feedback we get, from the councillors to the mayor to the state politicians, everybody thinks it’s a good thing for the community. We add to the economy in overnight accommodation, small business benefits, we source everything as locally as possible. “I enjoy giving back to the community in which I do business and live. I couldn’t imagine living anywhere else in the world. We’re lucky enough to own a good business in probably the best place to live in the world. To put some time and effort back that benefits the community in multiple ways, that’s satisfying. It’s pretty easy to go and put your feet up and sit on the beach, but there’s not a lot of satisfaction in that.”

arlene Pulls has an interesting job – after all, it isn’t every day that you get to work in both Sweden
and Australia. Pulls is one in a team of TAFE Queensland in-country managers who are living and working abroad in China, Latin America, Vietnam, Thailand and Europe with the primary purpose of recruiting international students to study locally. A day can involve anything from speaking at schools or attending expos and information days around the world. She has recruited around 150 European students during her career – many who contribute more than $5.8 million to the Sunshine Coast economy each year. Pulls had the chance to catch up with some of her recruits when she visited the Sunshine Coast recently as part of an International In-Country Representative Conference. “I love my job. I get the chance to help students grow as both people and as professionals,’’ Pulls tells My Weekly Preview. “(Currently) I’m travelling around Queensland to see the sights and visit the different regional campuses to both touch base with the students that I’ve sent Down Under and to learn what new study opportunities TAFE Queensland is introducing for international students. “The Sunshine Coast is the ultimate study destination. I mean, the Coast offers a lifestyle that many different parts of the world can only dream of. The climate is a major drawcard, but both the gorgeous beaches and friendly people here make the Coast a safe and supportive community to live in.’’ TAFE Queensland East Coast general manager Dr Paul Wilson says TAFE international students inject around $5.8 million into the Sunshine Coast economy annually. There are 189 international students currently studying at the local institute.

T
he competitive nature of the Australian mortgage market offers little confidence of a sustained margin recovery for the banks in a lower cash rate environment. Over the past 12 months, the sector has experienced an eight per cent downward swing in earnings per share expectations for the 2016 financial year, while 2017 expectations also remain vulnerable. Although the sector is circa 10 per cent cheap, with relative valuations and dividend yields looking attractive, we believe the lingering earnings risk will keep investors wary until there is more clarity on the following issues: 1) margins; 2) asset quality; 3) the positioning of the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA) on the regulatory capital agenda. We recently trimmed our earnings
estimates across the sector by around two per cent to reflect the elevated level of competition in lending. With lower cash rates in play and cost-of-funds headwinds from net stable funding ratio factors, we are concerned about the apparent lack of discipline on asset pricing. This is particularly so in mortgages, where discounting activity and churn rates are high. Although there are likely prospects for banks to reprice with any future cuts in the official cash rate, recent evidence suggests that this will offset current pressure rather than delivering higher overall levels of profitability. So while the sector has been weaker and forecasts are subdued, there are reasons for this. The drip-feeding of profit downgrades has produced an eight per cent swing in 2016 earnings per share forecasts from four per cent growth to four per cent contraction, which will see the first contraction in earnings per share since the financial crisis. With the sector trading on a price/earnings ratio of 11.5 times relative to the broader market’s ratio of 16 times and with supportive yields, the question is whether the sector is cheap enough to look through

SOUTH WEST ROCKS AN ANIMAL WONDERLAND Nature and history blend beautifully in this beach town. By Evyn Testoni
G
handi would’ve liked South West Rocks. The Indian independence leader famously said the greatness of a nation can be judged by the way its animals are treated. On that note, the small town on the New South Wales north coast is one of the greatest places on Earth. It’s an animal wonderland, from the small, furry critters in the nearby national parks to the massive humpback whales that cruise past the coast. Dogs especially have a treasured place in the historic fishing village’s daily life. Main Beach on Trial Bay in front of the town has one of the best off-leash areas you’ll find – with locals and tourists alike cavorting with their canine friends along the pristine sand and surf. Many eateries also allow dogs in outdoor areas, and there’s plenty of pet-friendly accommodation. Campers and caravanners are able to bring their pets by prior arrangement to stay at the BIG4 Sunshine Holiday Park, which
we called home during our stay. We were in a cabin and left our dog at home, but the kids got a fix of pooch playtime befriending other people’s pets. Sunshine owner Tony Mayne says they’ve even allowed in cats and rabbits, but have to restrict pets in peak times like the summer school holidays for safety reasons. Kangaroos are probably second in the animal pecking order, with mobs of eastern greys taking up residence at just about every major site. They are tolerant of humans, but not tame and locals make a point of asking visitors not to feed them. There was even a mob of roos inside the Trial Bay Gaol ruins at Laggars Point, happily nibbling grass as people wandered around them to take in the amazing site. The sandstone gaol is an eerie and stunning attraction in a sublime location. While the suffering of inmates is laid bare, particularly the German internees who were sent there during World War I, the watchtower offers incredible views of beaches on both sides of the headland.

time with a rod and reel. There are many great locations for even novice fishers and kids, with the town situated at the mouth of the Macleay River. South West Rocks is a bit of a hidden gem. Being a bit of a way off the Pacific Highway, which travels about 25 kilometres inland from the town, it’s a place you either know and love or have never visited. It’s about six hours’ drive from both Sydney and Brisbane, so is a great stopping point to break up a trip. Trial Bay northern NSW
On the day we visited, pods of dolphins were chasing fish right beneath us while not far in the distance endless pods of whales were migrating up the coast towards warmer waters – breeching, blowing and tail slapping along the way. The beach beneath the gaol site at the far end of Trial Bay is one of the rare places you can experience a sunset on Australia’s east coast as it curves into a fishhook shape to face west, allowing you to enjoy the day’s final rays. Roos are also in abundance at the Smoky Cape Lighthouse only a few minutes’ drive from town – another great place to whale watch. The lighthouse is within Hat Head National Park, which has many good bushwalks. South West Rocks’ main attractions are its water-related wonders – beaches, rivers and fishing. The town is one of the most eastern points of New South Wales’ coast and also happens to be one of the closest places to the continental shelf – about 13 miles, compared to 26 in Sydney – making it a haven for deep sea anglers. But you don’t have to be chasing big fish to enjoy some

ENAMOURED BY EUROPE
Despite the noise, mess and chaos of having three young children, Sami Muirhead is determined to relish every moment.
B
irthdays for our children are a way of keeping track of how time really does fly by so quickly, aren’t they? My youngest child turned two this week and I just don’t know how this happened. It feels like yesterday he was a tiny newborn and to be honest, my husband and I were filled with dread two years ago that life as we knew it would never be the same again, as we would spend our entire time chasing around our three kids who were then aged under four. Well. We do chase around our three kids and clean up after our three kids. We scrub and wash and pick up after our three kids and then do it all again the next day. And the house is a mess. It is more like a Club Med for little people and we are the suckers who run the 24-hour kids’ resort. And when people tell me they are tired from staying up late watching cool TV shows, I kind of want to punch them in the face. And I don’t know why my girlfriends still love me because I never see them. And you know what? Life is marvellous. It is a whirlwind and I have never been so content in my entire life. Children are a blessing, a miracle and a privilege to raise. And they are fun. Too many of us forget that along the way or never understand it in the first place. People warned us that the leap from two kids to three is a huge step. They will outnumber you, the doomsayers all whispered. You will need a new car. You will
never be able to travel again. Family passes only cater for two kids. I guess that’s why it took me by such surprise the sheer happiness our third child has given our entire family. Admittedly, we got lucky. Augie laughs from the moment he wakes up and scampers down the hallway, until the minute I put him back in his big boy bed (for the 13th time that night). Don’t get me wrong. He is actually a very naughty little boy. But that’s his charm. And he has his mum wrapped around his dirty, pudgy little finger. His huge brown eyes are full of mischief and he is so daring in his antics it sometimes frightens me. But our boy has given us nothing but joy for the past two years. His happiness and infectious laugh has been the glue of our family through good times and bad times. His cheeky ways and rambunctious nature have seeped into our hearts and souls. The walls of our home are constantly ringing with three children laughing and running and playing hide and seek. His big brother and sister adore him and even the two small dogs of the house secretly like the fact they have to be on guard at all times in case missiles are thrown at them by the tiny terrorist. The lot of them probably appreciate the fact he gets in more trouble than all of them combined. I have done a lot of reflecting this past week as my little clan grows up. I shouldn’t be sad my mate is turning two, but I am a little.

Australia could take a leaf out of Europe’s book on public transport, architecture and attractive public spaces, says Andrew Pitcher.
W
e are just back from a mid-year vacation in Europe. It was great to show the kids some of our old haunts and the significant history on offer. Unlike Clark Griswold, my mind was racing with ideas for Australia, comparisons and opportunities. Here are a few: Public transport and traffic are major issues. With population growth and commercial congestion, the pressure on our roads has never been greater. The need for modern, accessible and fast rail transport is acute. As it relates to the Coast, this isn’t just duplication – we must get passenger rail into the heavily populated corridors of Caloundra and Maroochydore as a priority. Public open spaces are important. Some of the most memorable places we visited were parks and gardens built hundreds of years ago that are as vibrant today as they were when conceived. While we have natural beauty all around us, it is critical that we also create man-made spaces in the heart of where we live and work that are attractive, substantial and enduring. Signature architecture attracts tourists. The highlight of the trip for me was a tour down the Thames looking at the fantastic architecture around the City of London. The Shard, the Gherkin, the Walkie Talkie and the new London City
Hall are all attractions in themselves, and sit nicely alongside the historic monuments. I wonder if, in our quest to ‘not be the Gold Coast’, we have lost our inspiration to create magnificent buildings here? Attractions are important. While we love and protect our natural assets, tourists also visit for attractions and events. We need to keep creating a diverse offering that includes fun, adventure, history, nightlife, culture and natural attractions here on the Coast. Brexit was unsurprisingly surprising. There were many pros and cons in the UK leaving the EU, but I wasn’t at all surprised that the Remain campaign was surprised they lost. Citizens everywhere want action on issues such as border security, size of government and economic opportunity. The Leave vote reflected the frustration at decades of inaction. Customer service does differentiate. The service we received in different countries was hugely variable. The French were superb, the British were ambivalent (at best) and the Asians were mixed. What strikes me is how little effort it takes to provide exceptional customer service. It is something we should aim to differentiate with here on the Sunshine Coast. We do live in a wonderful place, but we shouldn’t be complacent. We need to do much more than just be ‘the holiday road’.

t feels like it’s been a while between drinks friends, and in that time I’ve realised just how crazy the world has become. For example, America wants people to choose between 10 finalists in American Idol but only puts up two for the presidential election, which I guess is the same in our great country right? No, go with me on this. Last election it was basically a choice between Malcolm and Bill, right? As opposed to the Bachelor guy on the tele who starts with 22 ladies then whittles
them down to two and finally one, with whom he plans to spend the rest of his life. I’d like to compliment the Bachy, it’s a cracking TV show that gives Aussie blokes plenty of ideas for exotic places to take the lady of your dreams and tell her you’re keen to make out with someone else. But I digress. I recently learnt that you can go online in the US and buy a bona fide ouija board that’s suitable for eight years and above. So in the US you have to be 21 to drink and or drive a car and vote, but you only have to be eight to summon the devil. Nuttier than a Snickers. Then there’s the whole presidential race. Hillary Clinton vs the Trumpenator. Both with solid support from everyday Americans. I did just hear late yesterday that Donald Trump has found Jesus, although I believe he had him deported immediately. So, I’m not down with the Pokémon Go craze. I mean don’t get me wrong, I love me a craze. Lazer discs, green tomato sauce, Hammer pants, Tamagotchi pets, Hypercolour T-shirts, sea-monkeys, Gangnam Style, mood rings, lava lamps, Star
Wars action figures, breakdancing, hacky sack, South Park, the Rachel hairdo. . . But the Pokémon fad? Yeah no. Strangers go online, throw out a lure in the hope of catching a random creature they can then keep as a trophy and tell all their friends about. Don’t we already have this? It’s called Tinder. Good old Tinder, where I’m told you can find the absolute one true love of your life. Sometimes twice in the same night. I forgot to go to the gym this morning. That makes it, um, four years in a row now. I’m keen to get in shape but hey, as I always say, round is a shape, right? Had a great epiphany last weekend. I realised that being a husband is just like being a TV weatherman. You can be wrong 85 per cent of the time and still keep your job. It’s true. My neighbour’s ex-boyfriend’s kid’s PE teacher’s brother said it on Facebook. We are celebrating International Beer Day today people. FASHION FORWARD AAP’s Peter Atkinson says the Range Rover Evoque has been spiced up.
B
eing fashionable is easy enough. Staying fashionable is the hard part. Matching strides with the in-crowd can be a day-to-day proposition. Range Rover’s chic baby SUV, the Evoque, has been at the cutting edge of fashion ever since it first rolled down the catwalk in 2011. Make no mistake, the Evoque is as much a fashion item as any Prada handbag or pair of Jimmy Choo stilettos. To prove the point, its makers even released an exclusive, highly-priced Victoria Beckham edition a couple of years back. The
Spice Girl turned fashionista added her touch with mohair carpets, rose gold accents and massive wheels – plus an equally massive price tag. Only 200 were made – mostly for the Chinese market – with a reported price of $150,000. Very Posh indeed. Now, five years after the Evoque made its stunning mark on the motoring landscape, the time has arrived for a facelift. Happily, with a nip here and a tuck there, the good folk at Range Rover seem to have pulled it off. The Evoque borrows many of the same styling cues from the Range Rover Vogue and,
more recently, the Rangie Sport – square, economical lines, plenty of glass and purposeful, masculine stance. To freshen things up, they’ve given it a more masculine front end with larger air intakes, new grille and headlights, distinctive bonnet vents and sportier tailgate. While the physical changes have been relatively modest, this update is nonetheless a substantial one. A key ingredient is Range Rover’s new ‘Ingenium’ diesel – which will be offered in two versions – one with 110kW and another with an impressive 134kW output – with fuel consumption as low as 4.4L/100km. We tested the feistier of the two – coupled to a class-leading nine-speed automatic transmission – and it’s a cracker. Crisp, responsive and smooth, it delivers instant get-up-and-go that perfectly matches its urban-focused, weekend escape personality. The engine is frugal but fun – a good combination for a car that pretends to be outdoorsy but is probably more at home outside a theatre than on a muddy track. For those not partial to the mild clatter of these diesels, there’s the option of a turbocharged two-litre, four cylinder petrol engine that offers a punchy 177kW. The luxurious interior emphasises the Evoque’s urban pedigree – with a cleaner, contemporary design throughout. Emergency collision avoidance braking,
attention assist, lane-keeping system and a hands-free tailgate are part of the comprehensive electronics package. The new Evoque will be offered with two distinctive body styles – Dynamic or standard – and with the choice of two-wheel or all-wheel drive. The Evoque will be offered in five trim levels – the real fashion slaves might want to wait for the ground-breaking soft-top cabriolet model, which arrives later in the year.
RANGE ROVER EVOQUE HOW BIG? It’s a compact luxury SUV – but despite its smallish dimensions it offers decent interior space for four adults, plus reasonable cargo capacity. HOW FAST? We tested the 134kW diesel variant which is quite a rocket. There’s a more docile diesel or a turbocharged petrol engine that’s even quicker off the mark. HOW THIRSTY? The diesels each drink less than 5L/100km while the petrol variant slurps about half as much again. HOW MUCH? You can get into the base model for a touch over $50,000 plus onroad costs. Most buyers will prefer one of the more luxurious options, which range all the way up to $80-grand. Some options will push you dangerously close to $100k, even without Victoria Beckham’s input.

Coast-based software company has released an online voting program that promises to provide strata lot owners with an easy and cost-effective way to manage their strata scheme. Strata Vote delivers all the information a lot owner needs to make a decision and cast a vote, wherever they are in the world. It also means owners can host online meetings if they are out of town or unable to attend. Strata Vote managing director Dee Pannell says apathy is killing the nest eggs many Australian’s have worked hard to build. “Most people don’t know that as a lot owner, you have a right and a responsibility, to ensure your Body Corporate is being managed and maintained properly.” Due to the inefficiencies in the running of strata schemes - from meetings, to
casting votes – many lot owners don’t want to waste valuable time taking an active role, Pannell adds. “This often results in a dangerous situation where the Body Corporate is controlled by a few, self-interested owners. “Keeping abreast of everything that’s happening with your strata property can already be a headache due to the complexities of the Strata Legislation in each state– an issue that’s further exacerbated for overseas or interstate investors. “The simple fact is, protecting against sudden hikes in levies and irresponsible use of funds becomes very difficult when owners don’t actively participate.”
New research commissioned by an Australian bank shows that home owners are after more than affordability when it comes to the property market. Following affordability, the highest priority for first home buyers when purchasing a home is the potential for house price growth, according St.George Bank. The survey of 1000 first home buyers across Australia reveals value growth is their second priority followed by the distance to work, distance to shops and, in fifth place, distance to family and friends. Evaluating which properties presented good value was ranked by respondents as the most difficult task during the house hunting process, showing the importance placed by first home buyers on understanding the market and potential for
capital growth. While buying in a growth area was extremely important for first home buyers, more than one quarter (26.4 per cent) of respondents say they had to make compromises to buy their home, with half (49.8 per cent ) of those compromising on location, and 45.7 per cent compromising on price. Retail Banking general manager Ross Miller says the research highlights that first home buyers are looking beyond lifestyle factors when purchasing property. “Buying a first home is more than buying a roof over your head. Our home is usually our biggest financial investment and over the last few decades we have seen a sharp increase in the value of the average Australian home.”

MBA chief executive Wilhelm Harnisch says reinstating the Australian Building and Construction Commissioner (ABCC) will

lead to the cost of building hospitals, schools and other public infrastructure falling. “The community has rights and those rights can be enhanced by laws that will lower the cost of construction, laws that will reinstate the powers of the ABCC. The HIA New Home Sales Report, a survey of Australia’s largest volume builders, shows that total new home sales ended 2015/16 on a higher note. Queensland has particularly fared well. Chief economist Dr Harley Dale says the bounce of 8.2 per cent in June highlights the resilience of the national new home building sector. “The overall profile of HIA new home sales is signalling an orderly correction to national new home construction in the short term, as are other leading housing indicators,” he says. “Below the national surface, the large
geographical divergences between state housing markets have been a prominent feature of the current cycle – that will continue. The New Home Sales series highlights this fact. Comparing the June quarter this year to the same period last year, detached house sales are down very sharply in South Australia (-21.4 per cent) and in Western Australia (-27.5 per cent), yet sales are up by 17.0 per cent in Victoria and by 7.1 per cent in Queensland.’’ Detached house sales increased by a significant 14.9 per cent in Queensland for the month of June.

Well, well, well… looky at the swell. Yep, looks like a bump in the waves this weekend. Depending on who you believe it could be 6ft or 3 ft. But one thing for sure it will be windy. Head to Noosa or the river mouth up there, or maybe look at heading to Bali? Just saw airfares return for $200! That is insane. The Vans US open finished in crappy waves – now I can remove the sharp pencils from my eyes. Yep a Brazilian won it, so no surprise… boring.
FISHING REPORT with Wayne Nilsson from Maroochydore Fishing World
ESTUARY: Bream are still the go with quality fish taken this week using mullet fillet and fowl gut at the Maroochy Bar and along Bradman Avenue. You can get flathead on the drift using livies along the Twin Waters banks near the new boat ramp facility in Nojoor Road. There are winter whiting along the oyster banks at Bli Bli. SURF: Tailor are along most open beaches from Mudjimba to Kawana with low tide gutters after dark the more favoured spots using pillies. Sea bream and flathead are working along North Shore on whitebait. OFFSHORE: Snapper have moved in closer with the new moon and quality catches have been taken this week at Coolum. You can also get them at The Gneerings and Caloundra wide using squid and pillies. The Barwon Banks is best for pearlies, squire, amberjack and trag jew. Kingies are taking livies at the Blinker at first light with cobia, around the northwest fairway marker off Caloundra. Water temp is 20 degrees.

Water holes below the dam wall at Borumba are returning a good mix of jew, bass, and golden perch on earthworms and shrimps.
