COUNTDOWN TO CATASTROPHE The clock is ticking on climate change – but have we left our run too late? WORDS: Candice Holznagel
A
world without the Great Barrier Reef – it’s an alarming concept. This wonder, as we know it, has changed forever, and if current scientific predictions are correct, much of it could be dead within 20 years. Earlier this year, news broke that the billion-dollar tourist attraction, which covers an area of 344,400 square kilometres (a bit bigger than Italy) and is home to an array of marine life including 1600 species of fish and six of the world’s seven marine turtle species, has experienced its third mass coral bleaching episode in the past 18 years. News of the coral carnage made headlines around the world. The National Coral Bleaching Taskforce – a collaboration of scientists from across the nation – reports that 93 per cent of the reef, which dates back 500,000 years and is the largest living structure on earth, has been affected. Bleaching occurs when corals are stressed by changes in environmental conditions. The ARC Centre of Excellence Coral Reef Studies, says the statistic is an overall figure that has been calculated based on very severe, moderate and little damage conditions, which change dramatically along the 2300-kilometre 12 My Weekly Preview | July 22, 2016

length of the reef. Taskforce convenor, Professor Terry Hughes, says he’s never witnessed bleaching of this scale. “In the northern Great Barrier Reef, it’s like 10 cyclones have come ashore all at once. Towards the southern end, most of the reefs have minor to moderate bleaching and should soon recover.” During the study, the team flew over 911 individual reefs to map out the severity of bleaching. Of all the reefs surveyed, only seven per cent escaped bleaching entirely, while at the other end of the spectrum between 60 and 100 per cent of corals are severely bleached on 316 reefs. In April, scientists from the ARC Centre of Excellence for Climate System Science reported that if greenhouse gases keep rising as they are, mass coral bleaching events will happen every two years by the mid-2030s. New research published in the journal Science supports the theory, revealing that coral is losing its ability to protect itself against bleaching. As global water temperatures continue to rise, coral will lose the chance to adjust. Facing an environmental and public relations disaster, the chairman of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority, Russell Reichelt, has come out strongly
Professor Tim Smith against the coral bleaching findings, calling them exaggerated. He points to the preliminary results from a study by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority and the Australian Institute of Marine Science, which were released in June. Those findings show about threequarters of the reef are expected to survive this latest bleaching episode – but at the same time, they also reveal that 22 per cent of the coral has already been killed. One thing most scientists can agree on is the damage is caused by climate change. Go back 20 to 30 years and an entire
generation of primary school students sat behind wooden desks, looking on as teachers shared the basic facts about global warming and climate change, assisted by cartoon illustrations of greenhouses and the earth. We were told of how humans were burning fossil fuels and contributing extra carbon dioxide to the atmosphere. The message didn’t stick. Our planet, according to some leading biologists, is now on the verge of the sixth mass extinction, with predictions that 20 to 50 per cent of all living species will be eliminated within this century. NASA reports that carbon dioxide levels are at an all-time high. Data shows the level of carbon dioxide remained at 300 parts per million for centuries, but since 1950, it has steadily increased, and is now more than 400 parts per million. The current warming trend has proceeded at an unprecedented rate in the past 1300 years and global sea levels have risen about 17 centimetres in the past century. Alarmingly, the rate in the past decade is nearly double that of the past 100 years. extreme weather events. Experts agree there is a shift taking place, which has triggered a renewed focus on tackling climate change – but, more scientists are now focusing on adaptation rather than mitigation. Professor Tim Smith is the director of the University of the Sunshine Coast’s Sustainability Research Centre and has led or partnered on more than $14 million of competitive research grants into projects relating to sustainability. He says with dramatic climate changes predicted, Australia is entering unchartered territory. “We are still finding in research it is very easy to understand climate change mitigation – if you burn greenhouse gases it affects the atmosphere – but because the impact of climate change is so diverse, it affects different places at different times. (There’s) extreme flooding events then in another part of Australia there are heat events.” The impacts will be widespread, from our vulnerable older population struggling to deal with rising temperatures, to young farmers battling droughts. “It’s one of the reasons why we need to invest in these areas. We really don’t understand the specifics of the impact,’’ Smith says. “We are definitely going to have to adapt no matter what, but the extent is unknown. Into the future, how we design our communities and settlements needs to obviously act to reduce the extent of the impacts.’’ However, changing a community’s way of thinking and living is a mammoth task. There is money tied up in property, businesses will need to adapt. “Private property impacts are not the business of government so really it’s up to individuals and communities. The bill for dealing with natural disasters (is a government responsibility) and taxpayers foot that bill. “We live in a democracy for better or worse. People do have the ability to

contribute to processes to address climate change.” Earlier this month, Queensland Environment Minister Dr Steven Miles told delegates at the Climate Change for Good conference on the Gold Coast that the state was getting “back on track” when it comes to taking action. He says the government is developing and implementing strategies to better understand how global warming will affect the region. The State has committed an additional $6.8 million over four years to lead the development of climate change strategies and a further $3 million to

HELPING OUT Drought is yet another issue linked to climate change. According to the Climate Council, since the mid-1990s, south-east Australia has experienced a 25 per cent decline in average rainfall in April and May. Alarmingly, the relative risk of suicide can increase by up to 15 per cent for rural males aged 30 to 49 as the severity of drought increases. In a bid to assist affected farmers, the Caloundra Power Boat Club has joined forces with Rural Aid Australia on the Buy a Bale drought relief campaign. The Sunshine Coast community is being called on to help recognise hard-working volunteers by nominating them for the seventh annual Kawana Electorate Queensland Day Community Awards. Member for Kawana Jarrod Bleijie says the awards provide an opportunity to acknowledge and pay tribute to the thousands of local volunteers. Previously, volunteers from schools, not-for-profit organisations, scout groups, neighbourhood watch groups and animal welfare groups have been recognised. Nominations close August 15. People are being invited to a free type 2 diabetes workshop to learn how to better manage the disease. Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service is running the workshop for people who are newly diagnosed, need a refresher or have been told by their doctor they have pre-diabetes. Research shows there may be more than three million Australians living with diabetes in the next 20 years. The workshop is free and will be held at the Maroochy RSL sub-branch on July 27. BEN HUDSON AND CAP BRAVEHEART’S BIG WIN Mudgee rider Ben Hudson successfully defended his national title at the weekend after completing a 160-kilometre ride in wet conditions at the 2016 National Endurance Championships held in Imbil. This win looks certain to secure Hudson’s place in the Australian team travelling to the World Endurance Championships in Slovakia in September. Hudson, who rode Cap Braveheart, achieved the time of 10 hours 15 minutes and 30 seconds, while runner-up and Imbil local Kaylea Maher galloped in only three seconds behind. More than 97 riders competed, including 10 hoping to secure a place at the World Championships in Slovakia later this year.
SIX HERITAGE GROUPS AWARDED GRANTS Six heritage groups have received $29,800 in funding thanks to the Sunshine Coast Council’s Resourcing the Region grant. The Yinneburra Reserve is set to be expanded with the State Government announcing last week it will hand over a neighbouring block of land to the Sunshine Coast Council. Police Minister Bill Byrne says the government made the decision about the unused land owned by the Queensland Police Service, Point Arkwright Police Reserve, after thorough consultation. Councillor Stephen Robinson says the Coolum & North Shore Coast Care group is excited about the additional bushland.
COUNCIL AWARDED FOR ECO ACTION Sunshine Coast Council, Moreton Bay Council and 30 other community, industry and government stakeholder groups who are working together to protect Pumicestone Passage and its diverse catchment have been rewarded at the Healthy Waterways Awards on the weekend. Councillor Jenny McKay says, “After learning about its declining health, we knew that significant intervention was needed to save this precious waterway and the many wildlife species that call it home.” The council received a highly commended award.

Ark of the Covenant resides in the city of Axum), this east African country stirs different recent memories. During the 1980s, Bob Geldof’s Band Aid appeal broadcast images of poverty and famine to the world, and few would have considered coming here on holiday. But all that is changing. The country which claims to “make you seven years younger” and knocks all time schedules out of sync (by operating on a different calendar and clock system) is now one of the most progressive nations in Africa. New roads, facilities and – crucially – upmarket accommodation options, are opening doors for tourists. Especially exciting is Limalimo Lodge, on the edge of the Simien Mountains National Park, opening in September. After flying into Gondar, it’s a threehour drive to perky town Debarq, where we pick up a guide at the park gates – a requirement for every visitor. Passing weatherworn women stooping under the weight of back-buckling eucalyptus bales, we follow a winding dirt road leading uphill to the low-lying 12-bedroom lodge. Until young Ethiopian owners Meles and Shif were granted a lease from the Africa Wildlife Foundation, this was common grazing land. “When we started building, I went to

linging like a limpet to the sheer sandstone rock face, I dig my toes into disconcertingly shallow foot holes. Tackling a six-metre vertical climb to reach the fifth century Abuna Yemata Guh, one of Tigray’s famous rock-hewn churches hidden in the Gheralta
mountain range, really does require a leap of faith. Like much of Ethiopia’s ancient past, mystery surrounds the origins of this holy cave, where exquisitely preserved frescoes of wide-eyed archangels emerge from the shadows. Worshippers of all ages still make the difficult journey to celebrate

surrounded by hundreds of noisy, chattering primates hungrily digging and munching on roots, an activity occupying most of their day. During jealous family scraps, confrontational males peel back lips to reveal dagger-sharp teeth. The Simien Mountains are also home to the Ethiopian wolf, but I’m told sightings are far more common in the Bale Mountains, further south. A 10-hour drive from the capital city, Addis Ababa (aside from chartering a helicopter, road is currently the only access option), Bale Mountain Lodge is promoted as a sister property to Limalimo. Similar in environmental outlook and accommodation offering, the one-yearold lodge in the lichen-draped Harenna Forest belongs to British couple Guy and Yvonne Levene. A plaque in the main lodge lists a recently discovered butterfly species named after the Levenes, and the elusive Abyssinian lion has also been snapped by camera traps set in the grounds. Yet I’m stunned when Yvonne reveals numbers of the Ethiopian wolf may have dropped down to 80 following an outbreak of canine distemper in the park. Driving to their known home range on the Sanetti Plateau, I struggle to find
flashes of auburn fur amid giant lobelia plants and clumps of white everlasting flowers. It’s true – the world’s rarest canid could be edging closer to extinction. For a magical hour, though, I do manage to track a family on foot, hiding behind rocks and crawling into gullies. Despite my efforts, the wily wolves always spot me and with a quick scan of the horizon, they swiftly move on. The Levenes are campaigning to raise awareness of the fragile species’ plight, imploring Ethiopia’s government to
administer vaccines to the park’s domestic dogs, responsible for transmitting disease. “This is one of the most iconic species, four times rarer than the gorillas,” stresses Yvonne. “I’m not sure if anyone’s listening, but I couldn’t live with myself if I did nothing.” She’s right. The situation is dire and demands attention. There may be no churches on the stony, high-altitude Sanetti Plateau, but right now, everyone is turning to the heavens for help.

the local church and invited anyone interested to come and work for us,” says Shif, who has guided treks through the Simiens for 14 years. His wife, Julia, who gave up her job as a publisher in England to come and work here, proudly explains most employees live within five kilometres of the lodge. That night I drift off to sleep in what Limalimo’s real selling point, though, is an unparalleled view of the Unescolisted Simiens. Eroded pinnacles rise from a dry, dusty mist, like castle turrets in the sky, but come October, the earthy, undulating mass will be carpeted with grass and flowers. Gelada monkeys tentatively perch on rocky plateaus below the lodge, but for a closer encounter with the highland endemic, we drive for several hours into the park, where troops are more habituated as a result of ongoing work by researchers. Crouched in the long grass, we wait for sunlight to strike the cliffs and entice geladas from their night-time caves. Crowned with a glorious mane and distinctive pillar-box red breastplate, a statuesque male leads his family across the mountaintop to graze and play a short distance from our feet. A TRUCK LOAD OF KINDNESS
A Twin Waters couple has driven more than 20,000 kilometres to deliver essential supplies to drought-affected farmers. Words: Leigh Robshaw
I
an and Maree Lawson thought retirement would bring bit of golf and not much else. They settled in at Living Choice retirement village in Twin Waters in 2012 and planned to take it easy, but when they saw a TV news story about Aussie Helpers, a charity delivering hay and food for drought-stricken farmers, they felt moved to take action. Five days after seeing the news report last November, the golf was on hold and Ian and Maree were driving a semi-trailer loaded with hay to Quilpie, 220 kilometres west of Charleville. Ian grew up on a dairy farm and spent nine years in the army driving trucks and tanks, so was well qualified for the task. But Maree is a city slicker from Melbourne with no experience of roughing it. “My wife – she’s a five-star girl,” says Ian. “I didn’t think she could handle it, but she was up there in the front seat. She was my GPS. I wanted to make sure that anything we did in raising money and helping was actually getting to the farmers themselves and not being diverted along the way.” Their first trip involved driving a

19-metre truck loaded with 40 hay bales and dog food from Charleville to Quilpie. “We were there a month and did over 7000 kilometres,” says Ian. “What that did for us was show us these farmers were in so much trouble – they’re desperate. Some hadn’t seen rain in five years. A lot of the cattle had to be put down. When the water is low, the cattle get bogged trying to have a drink, then the crows come along and
eat their eyes. It’s disgusting. The farmers have no money, they can’t feed them, they can’t sell their stock because their in such poor condition. They can’t transport them and there’s no market for starving stock.” On New Years Eve they began their second month-long trip, delivering food and gifts to 65 properties around Charters Towers, came home for a rest and returned to Charleville in April for their
third trip. They’ve now driven a total of 21,500 kilometres to deliver life-saving help for farming families. “We’d go to a property, find a farmer and say g’day, how’s things? Some would say we’re getting through okay, some had psychiatric problems, some were breaking down all the time.” Ian says when they visit a property they have to pull in sideways, so the farmers can see the Aussie Helpers logo and don’t think it’s the liquidator. “They look at you funny for a while,” says Ian. “They don’t know if you’re fair

dinkum or a con artist. You say, how many acres do you have? They say 180,000. We say, how many cattle do you run? They say in good times, about 20,000, but we’re down to three at the moment. You leave them a carton of non-perishable food, you leave a pamper pack for the ladies and kids. A week later a truck comes in with 40 or 60 bales of hay – that’s when they cry. “When we go out with the 4WDs we always take a box of non-perishable foods and pamper packs – things like shampoo, creams, toiletries. When there’s kids involved, we take out toys. You get some great big heavy farmer who throws his arms around you and nearly crushes you. I had to pull one off my wife. These people are genuinely in trouble and there’s nowhere near enough being done to help them. “We met a few government people. I think what happens is somebody important from the government flies out to Longreach but they don’t get out to the properties. I just don’t think they get the first-hand story. “My wife tells a story about our first trip. The trucks come through the depot with hay. She was in the kitchen and a big truckie came in and said, g’day, mind if I have a shower? She said go for it. He said he’d gone onto a property to deliver hay
and suddenly an eight-year-old girl came running out and she threw herself at him. He cuddled her and she said thank you, thank, you, now mummy won’t have to shoot my horse. He said he got in the truck, drove a kilometre down the road, stopped and bawled his eyes out.” Ian and Maree were affected so much by what they saw, they organised a fundraiser at Living Choice and raised over $10,000 for Aussie Helpers. “The message I have for people is, your produce and meat comes via the supermarket, but it starts with people who live on properties and have to work hard in good times and bad to get that to us. That’s the first thing. The second part is, they need all the help they can get. “If we go to supermarkets at Charters Towers with our Aussie Helpers T-shirts on, people say, here’s $20. Chalk the Walk Day will give those who have lost a child the chance to tell the world their child is still loved, writes Sami Muirhead .
W
e all look for signs from loved ones we have lost. Lu and Adem Crosby lost their son Adem to leukaemia. Lu looks out for feathers as a sign from her son sending her little messages that he is okay. Another friend, Rachel, lost her dear little boy when he drowned when he was just 20 months old. Rachel also believe feathers are a sign from her baby boy. Another friend has had seven miscarriages. Every Sunday she lights a candle to remember those babies she lost. We all crave communication with those who have crossed to the other side. What I would give for five minutes with my grandmother, to smell her perfume again, and kiss her head and touch her soft hands. Lu and Brent Crosby formed Team Adem to help other families going through what they went through and to promote blood donation. They have organised the inaugural Chalk The Walk Day on July 31. It is a chance to write a message in chalk to someone you love who has died. It is a chance to literally spread the word about joy and love and living every day to its fullest. It will double as the official unveiling of an elegant sculpture they have built to honour lost children. The piece of art is called Bright Stars and stands beautifully in Lions Park at the top of Buderim.
My brave friend Rachel is going to write some words to her little boy Hamish on the day and also speak about the value of the statue and the importance of the walk and the sculpture. “There’s nothing more a bereaved mother wants than to hear her child’s name,” she says. “As time marches forward, his name is uttered less and less. I will rely on this beautiful tribute to remind the world that my child existed and he is still loved.” The mum of five has a children’s book coming out soon about her unimaginable ordeal. I want to share some of her words she has written on social media about her little angel. “As Hamish grew increasingly beautiful, our besotted family drank in his good humour. He laughed at every clowning moment, danced at every song, and smiled constantly; the joy seeping into the walls, floor and ceiling of our home. It didn’t matter where I hid the colouring pencils or crayons, Hamish would find them, expressing his creative soul with Picasso-like pieces on any available space. I could never chastise him. He would smile cheekily and I would struggle to hold my stern countenance. I swear if he could wink, he would have. And then he was gone.” The Chalk the Walk morning seems a fitting way to remember little Hamish. I hope you too can join us to send a message of love up to that someone special you have lost.

TITANS – A pungent aroma that really
dances off the senses. Its almost acidic tones are thanks to the majority of it being Greg Bird’s wee squeegeed off Byron Bay police cars. WARRIORS – This is a weird one, some days it smells beautiful, other days it carries the unforgettable stench of a flaming nappy bag. PANTHERS – A seamless capturing of all things Mt Druitt, subtle notes of burnt rubber, tracky dacks and Centrelink cheques are all apparent. DRAGONS – It’s actually just water, no fragrance at all, offering literally nothing to the wearer. SEA EAGLES – A distilled bottle of Daly Cherry-Evans’ tears now that the pressure of being a $10 million dollar man has hit. WESTS TIGERS – Combining all of the best parts of Jason Taylor’s personality, thus the bottle is empty. RABBITOHS – One for the bondage crowd, an overriding smell of whip leather, taken from the one Michael McGuire flogs the players with at training. EELS – The price just dropped, but you can only get it in a brown paper bag from under the counter. Cash only. ROOSTERS – Mitchell Pearce was involved in the development, so the two major notes are Bourbon and Schmackos. KNIGHTS – Could be renamed Prawns in the Sun, this number stinks like something that was great a long time ago but now offends multiple senses.

rom oral health, to cleaning products and even the common cold, essential oils have a wide range of uses. Rid your home of chemical-laden household products with my five favourite essential oils. 1. Lavender is the great relaxer, lavender oil is used to help aid peaceful sleep and is great for headaches. Lavender is also very helpful for skin rashes and is an effective disinfectant for burns and cuts. You can add lavender and one teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda (aluminium free) to your washing. 2. Clove has been used for centuries to help alleviate pain associated with dental cavities. An affordable remedy for toothache, clove contains eugenol, a strong antiseptic and anaesthetic to reduce pain and kill germs. Clove is also useful as a mould remover. Add 10 drops to 100 ml of water, spray directly onto mould, and leave for at least one hour
before wiping off. 3. Lemon contains the naturally occurring active constituent known as limonene and it can be used as a natural cleaning agent in your home, as well as being added to coconut oil and used as a chemical-free toothpaste replacement. 4. Peppermint is great for giving a fresh smell to your cleaning. It also makes a great natural tummy soother, as it’s high in menthol, calming stomach aches, nausea, and irritable bowel syndrome. 5. Eucalyptus oil is anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, antiseptic, antibacterial, and a decongestant. Eucalyptus can also be used for bites, wound healing and added to vaporisers for coughs. he development managers behind Maroochydore’s new city centre are poised for a business blitz south of the border with strong interest in the project since it officially launched to market last month. SunCentral Maroochydore chief executive officer John Knaggs says he will head to Sydney and Melbourne in coming weeks to meet potential developers, investors and future tenants. “The interest we’ve received in the project from potential partners has been extremely positive,” Knaggs says. “We are in a unique position to be able to offer a custom-made city, built from scratch. There is no other urban CBD development like it in Australia.” Expressions of Interest have been invited in the new 53-hectare CBD site which offers 150,000-square metres of commercial space and 65,000-square metres of retail area. “It is a unique chance for those in the professional and community services, education, research and development, technology and communications, health, tourism and other key sectors to be part of creating a brand new city centre in one of the fastest-growing regions in the country. “But it’s not just big investors or developers we’re looking for. This vibrant new city centre will be a great location for start-up companies and small businesses as well.” Knaggs says the project provides unprecedented opportunities for technology and digital infrastructure to be embedded in the new city centre before above ground construction commences. “We will create a genuine city for the future with super high speed connectivity, smart signage and lighting and public realm Wi-Fi without having to deal with the expense and inconvenience of retrofitting,’’ he says.
John Knaggs An independent assessment has found the new CBD will provide a $4.4 billion boost to the Sunshine Coast economy over the next 20 years and generate 15,000 jobs in the next decade. The plans to head south follow a successful trade mission to Asia with Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson last month. “Our trip to China, South Korea and Hong Kong was extremely fruitful, both in terms of meeting potential investors, but also in relation to learning more about how the digital age will help drive cities and businesses,” Knaggs says. “We are building one of the smartest cities in Australia and there is a lot we can learn from countries like South Korea in this respect.” Knaggs says the business community shares SunCentral’s vision of a bright future for the region with more than 60 per cent of our 30,000 businesses forecasting a rise in profits this year. The latest CCIQ Westpac survey ranks the Sunshine Coast as Queensland’s most profitable region. hat is Blockchain? Blockchain advances database technology by recording and storing every transaction that occurs across the network. All parties’ respective computers agree on how this information should be stored on the database using a consensus mechanism. Once agreed, this information is rendered unchangeable with the help of intricate cryptography, thereby creating an irrevocable and auditable transaction history and proof of ownership. Interest in Blockchain has soared as companies across a range of sectors investigate the technology’s benefits. The technology underpins Bitcoin, a crypto-based currency. One advantage for financial types is
that they can keep track of their assets in a single, shared database, rather than having to maintain their own databases. It will also drive efficiencies in transactions as trades can be settled almost instantly, rather than requiring myriad intermediaries. The technology also requires less capital, while supporting regulatory requirements, such as anti-money laundering, since it is impossible to conceal transactions. These efficiency gains are most relevant for trading exchanges, such as ASX. Specifically, Blockchain can help to reduce the time, cost and counterparty risk associated with clearing and settlement of trades. Indeed, the ASX has been at the forefront among exchanges around the world, exploring ways to adopt Blockchain technology. Earlier this year ASX announced a partnership with Digital Asset Holdings, a US-based technology firm, to investigate the viability of Blockchain replacing its current clearing and settlement platform. A proof of concept should be
finalised by the end of the year, with the plan to have a functioning system mid-2017. Talks with stakeholders will follow before implementation. ASX management predict costs throughout the value chain could fall by 15 per cent. In an associated industry, Blockchain could prove beneficial to asset managers that are also facing pressure to lower fees for investors. The technology could help them trim expense ratios by reducing fund administration costs, which represent around one third of ongoing fund costs. Analysis in the UK by our global
counterpart estimates that £1 billion in savings could be achieved, helping to alleviate pressure on fees. Looking more broadly, adoption of the technology by banks centres on a consortium called R3, established in September 2015. The consortium comprises 45 banks, which are collaborating on research that applies distributed ledger technologies within the global financial system. Bolstering the arrangement, Microsoft has announced a subsequent partnership with R3. Deloitte, a major accounting firm, is also investigating technological applications for auditing and reconciliation processes. The question is, who will be the winners and losers of such change?

CASCADA LIGHT AAP’s Peter Atkinson test drives Holden’s new convertible.
W
hy is it, do you suppose, that the countries with some of the planet’s worst weather make most of world’s fair-weather cars? Gloomy old Europe – with its sub-zero winters and months-long episodes of snow, sleet and grey skies – still manages to build the vast majority of convertibles – including virtually all of those sold Down Under. The latest convertible to hit the Australian market does so with the most
Australian of badges – it’s a Holden – but once again, it’s built in Europe. It’s called the Cascada – a soft-topped version of the very sporty-looking, European-sourced Holden Astra – effectively an Opel which has been given a slight Aussie drawl. Of course, this whole Aussie-made thing has become something of a moot point, now that Holden, Ford and Toyota have announced the end to their Australian-based manufacturing. Built in Opel’s plant at Russelheim,
Germany, the Cascada is a strikinglooking thing that combines the futuristic, swept-back lines of the equally attractive Astra with a folding cloth roof. It will fold back in about 17 seconds, at the push of a button and at speeds up to 50km/h. As cutting-edge as its exterior design is, some aspects of the Cascada’s interior feel a bit old-fashioned. Chief culprit in the Cascada is the digital display between the speedo and tacho in the main instrument panel – which seems to have escaped from the eighties with its garish, old-school orange LCD display. The centre stack, likewise, has missed the minimalist trend. I counted 42 buttons plus four knobs. It means that tasks like adjusting the radio or climate control settings are not very intuitive and near impossible to achieve while driving. Mind you, some of those buttons are pretty useful, too – including the auto stop start system that saves you fuel and the front and rear parking sensors. Dynamically, the Cascada is a bit of a mixed bag – although it steadily grew on us as our week-long test progressed. Initially it feels a bit stunted, performance-wise, with a relatively small 1.6-litre, turbocharged four-cylinder
providing the power (125kW, 260Nm). Coupled to a six-speed automatic transmission, the engine feels a little dull and uninspiring at lower speeds and requires a bit of driver encouragement before it starts spinning into its performance sweet spot. Once up and rolling, though, it’s more willing while still reasonable quiet and smooth in its operation. It all adds up to a pleasant – if less than exhilarating – driving experience.
HOLDEN CASCADA HOW BIG? It will accommodate four adults. It even offers decent cargo space for a drop-top model. HOW FAST? Not very – and certainly not as quick as the sporty exterior design would suggest. But if the Cascada’s more show than go, it is a very pleasant way to get around, nonetheless. HOW THIRSTY? Official thirst is 7.5L/100km – not great for a smallish engine, but it is dragging around quite a bit of weight. HOW MUCH? From $41,990 plus onroad costs – although Holden offered 50 “Launch Edition� variants with added features from $44,990. They’re probably better value if you can still find one.

Well, well, how was Mr Fanning’s win in South Africa? Deserved? Yep, he killed it! Now on to Tahiti next month. Not sure if he will be turning up but let’s hope for some solid swell regardless. Last week had some fun waves up in Noosa with less people in the water than you would think. As for this weekend… umm not so much - so get what you can. I’ll be on a logger so could be interesting. An old hipster I hear you ask? Maybe a follicly challenged one! Ha! It’s all about fun in the ocean. Enjoy.
FISHING REPORT with Wayne Nilsson from Maroochydore Fishing World
ESTUARY: Quality whiting are taking yabbies near the Bli Bli Bridge sand banks on the rising tide with the bigger tides this week to suit better. You can get trevally and flathead on plastics and lures at the mouths of Petrie and Eudlo Creeks. Mud crabs are on the move down the Maroochy River. SURF: There are bream at Mudjimba on the night high tide using mullet fillet and flathead in the low tide gutters during the day. You can find whiting along Maroochy Beach with pippies the best bait. There are tailor at Pincushion with the better quality just after dark using WA pilchards. OFFSHORE: When conditions allow, you can get Spanish mackerel on trolled lures at The Gneerings, with early morning best. Most reef areas are returning squire, sweetlip and parrot with the technique of jigging plastic baits or micro jigs returning the bigger fish. FRESHWATER: Freshwater licenses will only be available online or from Australia Post Offices from July 1. One of the best starts to the winter bass season with lures trolled along the weed line in almost any impoundment returning fish. Somerset also has golden and silver perch with baits and togas up at Borumba with visitors just enjoying the view.

GAMING GONE INSANE Richard O’Leary would rather live in a cave far from civilisation than play Pokémon Go.
I
stare over the bushland, feeling a million miles from anywhere. I tell my family I could live up here, in a cave at Cania Gorge, about 300 kilometres from the Sunshine Coast. No phone coverage, no TV, no traffic, no noise except the trill of a bird or the sound of my boys calling dibs on corners of the cave for their rooms. My wife raises questions about the cold, access to water, not to mention that it is a national park. Reality starts to seep through and the dream starts to fade. Predictably, I return to civilisation a few days later, if that is the right term. I’ll let you be the judge about whether our society meets the dictionary definition of the word: the stage of human social development and organisation which is considered most advanced. I have my doubts, many of them planted by the latest fad to sweep the world – Pokémon Go. How about Pokémon No?
For the uninitiated, it’s an augmented reality game where you download an app which taps into your phone’s GPS and clock, so you can go and find make believe monsters in the real world. It draws on nostalgia for those who played Nintendo’s Pokémon game in the 90s – remember when game play was restricted to your computer screen? That geographical constraint has now been lifted and millions of screen-fixated zombies are now stumbling around our suburbs looking for Charizard, Squirtle and Pikachu. The game, which began as an April Fool’s joke, is proving to be serious business for the game’s developer Nintendo, whose share price increased by 50 per cent in just over a week. It’s so popular that it already has more users in the United States than Twitter. There have been reports of zoned out Pokers (Pokémon Go-ers) being hit by cars, circling the centre of roundabouts
and falling into all manner of things: ponds, pools and poo. One positive is the game has released countless gamers from the confines of their dark bedrooms to get some exercise and discover the world around them. But the popularity of the game means it’s here to stay and imitators are sure to follow.
