s a gardener, I’m a bit like a bear – when winter comes, I tend to go into hibernation. This means I’m never ready for spring when it inevitably arrives with a rush, as it does on the Sunshine Coast. But no more. I’m going to drag myself out of the cave a little earlier this year, and with a little help from the My Weekly Preview gardening experts, give you all the help you need to make this spring a blooming success. This week we have a quick chat with Clare Paton, who as CEO of Maroochy RSL is excited about nearing the end of the club’s multimillion-dollar renovations. We profile a Coolum man, Richard West, who is taking 62 days to ride his motorbike around Australia in aid of mental health – turn to page 20 to find out why 62 is the magic number. Since 2008. It’s paradise, no matter where I travel it’s one of the best places in the world to always come home to.

I was working on the trading floor of a large investment bank in London, alongside some of the brightest, most talented and wealthy people in the industry. Even though they worked side by side each day, hardly anyone knew each other or anything about anyone else. The lack of humanity was a huge turning point for me and I soon realised that money is not my motivation and the success of my life will be determined by the quality of my relationships, not job titles or bank balance. Soon after, I gave up what would have been a hugely profitable career and a job offer in New York, to live in a tent and plant trees in the Canadian wilderness. The first of many capricious events my work career would take.

Being a good wife, daughter, sister, aunty, friend and colleague. If at the end of my life I’m known as a good person with a kind heart by the people that matter, that’s my goal.

Three of Australia’s most popular gardening experts share their tips and tricks for a thriving garden. Compiled by Richard O’Leary

he Queensland Garden Expo is on again. In the lead-up to this wonderful Sunshine Coast event, we spoke to the experts to find out how to make the most of our gardens this winter. WHAT TO PLANT IN WINTER MARJORIE VAN ROY, MANAWEE NURSERY The cooler weather is finally here, and although it took a little longer than expected, it is very welcome for most gardeners. In South-East Queensland, winter generally means cold nights but warm enough days to still get outside. Just because it is easier to stay in bed a little longer, doesn’t mean you can’t get outside and enjoy your outdoor space. Winter is the only time of year you will come across some certain plant types and species. It is the best time to find roses, cyclamen, pansies, violas and daisies. It is also the time to be looking at what kind of bulbs you may be planting. Plant summer flowering bulbs during winter for the best performance. This will include: alstromeria, iris, calla lilly, dahlia, galdioli, hippeastrum, kniphofia, lily of the valley, tuberose and lilium. Your soil should be rich in organic material and well drained prior to planting. If planting in pots, use a

premium potting mix. Keep an eye out for summer produce plants as now is the best time to buy asparagus, potatoes, raspberries, rhubarb and strawberries. Your soil should be made up of well-rotted manure, with plenty of organic matter. Most produce is easier to grow in the ground, however strawberries can be a great pot specimen. Many plants still grow and flower during winter, so don’t neglect the garden just because things are happening a little slower. Make sure citrus and fruiting trees still get decent fertilisation, and although you might be planting different crops, the herb and vegie garden still needs some attention too. During the winter months consider using more organic based fertilisers – these will generally break down once watered and don’t require the heat for the plant to absorb all the nutrition. You still need to water. A lot of gardeners don’t feel so thirsty themselves and tend to forget that the garden still needs a drink, even in winter. You never want your garden soil to stay wet all the time, so most likely you will reduce the frequency with which you will need to water, depending on the plant species you are growing. If you have any

Marjorie Van Roy deciduous trees or dormant bulbs, take care as these may not need to be watered at all through this season. Use your mulch. A 30-millimetre to 50-millimetre-deep layer of mulch will help keep many gardens at a more consistent temperature – warmer in winter and cooler in summer. If you need to apply more mulch in certain areas or for new plants, make sure no more than this is applied. Excessive mulch will result in poor water and nutrient penetration, which means poor growth. Too little and your ground temperature may drop too low and many flowering perennials will become dormant until spring.

Weeds grow in winter as well, but much slower and they generally don’t set flower or seed as quickly. Take this opportunity to remove any unwanted garden visitors before they become a problem. Don’t allow them to take hold as they will rejuvenate through summer and may be almost impossible to remove. Many weed seeds hibernate under leaf litter left behind from autumn. Although the leaves may look pretty, collect them up and add them to your compost, before spreading back through the garden. We’re lucky in this part of the world that many of our favourite trees and shrubs can be planted almost year round. Prepare your soil properly and continue to plant citrus, lillypilly, murraya (mock orange), tibouchina, camellia, magnolia and more. Best planted in winter are many of the free flowering perennials such as lavender, salvia, nemesia, diasica, pelargonium, osteospermum, argeranthemum, bacopa, polyanthus, primula, cyclamen, scabiosa and abutilons. In the herb and vegie garden the following are perfect to grow through winter: chamomile, comfrey, dill, garlic, lavender, lemon balm, marjoram, mint, oregano, parsley, sage, sorrel, spinach, silverbeet, lettuce, cabbage, broccoli and thyme. myweeklypreview.com.au

The Micro Gardener says letting your garden go to pot can be a good thing. 8 TIPS FOR HEALTHY CROPS IN POTS ANNE GIBSON, THE MICRO GARDENER Edible container gardens can provide you with a continual abundance of homegrown vegetables, herbs and fruit. With these tips, you can save money and improve your health with delicious, freshly picked ingredients. Tuck in. 1. Watering. Adequate moisture is essential. It’s easier to kill your plants by overwatering than underwatering. Soil should feel moist, but not too wet or dry – 40 to 70 per cent soil moisture is a good range for most plants. A moisture meter is a handy tool. It can save you wasting time and money by watering unnecessarily. Water-stressed plants are a green light for nature’s pest ‘clean up crew’. 2. Plant nutrition. It’s equally important to provide your edibles with a ‘soil pantry’ of soluble nutrients. Food crops are often heavy feeders, like hungry teenagers constantly raiding the fridge. Rock minerals and trace elements, like those found in seaweed, help boost plant health. These vital nutrients help plants look vibrant, taste amazingly full of flavour and smell mouth-watering. Just like we get sick and suffer from ailments if our diet is lacking in vitamins and minerals, it’s the same with our plants.

3. Soil biology. An active living soil community with diverse microorganisms is essential for healthy plants. Microbes help feed nutrients back to your plants around their roots. Add compost, worm castings and organic matter to your potting mix. Don’t expect your plants to thrive in ‘dead dirt’. 4. Select plants carefully. There are many dwarf varieties of fruit trees and vegetables available now. You can grow your favourite foods without them being space hogs. Try miniature varieties of lettuce, dwarf beans, peas, kale, cherry tomatoes, pumpkins and capsicum. Though the plant or crop may be smaller in size, you can still enjoy a generous harvest. Team up plants with similar water needs in the same pot, e.g. rosemary, garlic chives, aloe vera, thyme and oregano only need minimal watering. 5. Sufficient sunlight. Find a balance between maximising the space in your container, without overcrowding. Plants need adequate sunlight, moisture and nutrients. Too much competition can weaken your plants. Have limited sunlight? Rotate or move your container on a portable trolley to a sunnier spot. Vertical structures and hanging baskets can help you take advantage of sunlight up off the ground. 6. Miracle of mulch. A thick blanket of mulch is an ‘insurance policy’ for plants. Mulch regulates soil temperature; insulates seedlings against weather extremes; reduces plant stress; retains moisture; reduces watering; and minimises weeds. It also helps build healthy living soil. Try coir peat; finely chopped straw, sugarcane and lemongrass; leaf mould; or dry seed-free grass clippings. 7. Sow little and often. Regular ‘succession’ planting every week or two will provide you with a continual supply of food for your kitchen. Sow seeds if you want to save money. Sow seedlings if you want to get a jump start and save waiting three to four weeks.

8. Plant for pollinators. To improve pollination of fruiting crops, like peas and strawberries, plant edible flowers in your pots to attract bees. For more tips visit themicrogardener.com.

Your herb garden will still require plenty of sun and good drainage through winter and many gardeners find that they need to plant less in order to be successful. Most importantly, enjoy your garden through the winter months. These cooler days will only last a short time, so enjoy the peace and quiet in the garden before the excitement of spring is here. She was good enough to put the spade down and take off the sun hat to have a quick chat with My Weekly Preview about why she thinks gardening can save the world. WHAT FIRST ATTRACTED YOU TO GARDENING? I actually grew up in a plant family; my parents owned a big plant nursery. Initially it wasn’t a choice, however, and I actually went away from that and became a naturopath and then I came back to it, and found out I loved plants and I loved gardening. I had always loved nature, but I thought the gardening industry was a tough way to make a living. But along the way I became addicted to gardening and now I would call myself an obsessive compulsive gardener, totally biased, I think that everyone should garden and that we can save the world by gardening. On a serious level, I think gardening is really important, not just for our health and wellbeing, but for the wellbeing of the planet.

WHAT IS SO ADDICTIVE ABOUT GARDENING FOR YOU? I think it’s fantastic stress relief. I’ve got a tribe of five kids, I’ve got a very busy life and I can tell when I need to get time in my garden, because I get a little stressed – when I know I need to get back down to earth. You hear these phrases all the time; someone is grounded or down to earth. We forget that is not just a hype thing, it’s about a connection with the earth. And it has an amazing grounding effect on you, even to the extent that there is a therapy called earthing, which is all about getting barefoot and getting the connection with the earth where there is an electron transfer – and as gardeners we get that all the time. WHAT WOULD YOU DESCRIBE AS THE PERFECT GARDEN? I don’t think a garden should be perfect actually. Nature’s not perfect and nature’s about as perfect as you can get. So my perfect garden would be one where I got to play in it every day. You can have a garden by buying the best garden a garden designer can create for you, but if you only look at it from inside, you’re actually not interacting with it. It’s still better than not having green space around you, but to me a garden is a verb, not a noun, so it’s about our interaction with nature, and being outside and noticing the birds, or the bees or the amazing beauty in a single flower. To me gardening is all about that.

Rural Aid Australia through its Buy a Bale drought relief program is working with the Caloundra Power Boat Club and the Sunshine Coast in raising funds for a spring hay run. All funds raised by the Sunshine Coast community and the Caloundra Power Boat Club will go towards the Sunshine Coast hay run, departing the region on November 27. For as little as $70, members of the community can buy a bale of hay at the club, donate money for hay at various sites on the Sunshine Coast, or attend a fundraising dinner at the Caloundra Power Boat Club on Saturday, September 24 to raise funds to help feed struggling livestock in drought-stricken Queensland. RAMPING UP ACTIVITY AT BRIGHTWATER A new facility at Brightwater in Mountain Creek is helping ramp up water-based activities in the Stockland estate. The seats of Fairfax and Fisher have been secured by the LNP following Saturday’s Federal Government election. The seat of Fairfax, previously held by Clive Palmer, was returned to the LNP with Ted O’Brien securing 48.76 of the vote ahead of Labor’s Scott Anderson who received 20.87 per cent on first preferences. In the traditionally safe LNP seat of Fisher, candidate Andrew Wallace secured 48.69 per cent of the vote on first preferences, ahead of Labor’s Bill Gissane, who claimed 25.01 per cent. Communities Minister Shannon Fentiman says the Coast is one of 15 designated Safe Night Precincts in Queensland to receive funding as the State Government’s new laws to tackle alcoholfuelled violence come into effect on July 1. “By providing rest and recovery facilities and mobile outreach, these services will increase the safety of vulnerable people and those at risk of harm to themselves and others due to the influence of alcohol.”

THE RIDE OF HIS LIFE

Coolum’s Richard West is riding his trusty steed around Australia to raise money for mental health charity beyondblue. Words: Leigh Robshaw

ast Friday, Coolum Beach man Richard West kissed his wife goodbye, kick-started his gleaming red Yamaha 1300cc V Star and rode off into the proverbial sunset. He’s never ridden a motorbike more than 100 kilometres and doesn’t know the first thing about mechanics, but he has embarked on a 15,000-kilometre solo trip around Australia, which he plans to do in 62 days – one day for each day of his life. He arrived in the town of 1770 feeling tired and says he hopes to build endurance as his ride progresses through Townsville, Darwin, Broome, Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney, before returning home. His Easyrider style adventure will give him plenty of time to reflect on the difficult stage of life he currently finds himself in. After a long career in banking and an adventurous life, which has seen him live in seven countries and travel through more than 60, he can no longer find meaningful employment. “I’ve sort of given up,” he says. “I can’t even get an interview. I put it down to age. That might sound like an excuse, but I feel I have huge amounts of experience and maturity, which brings a certain amount of stability. But if I was a 40-year-old executive looking to employ me, I wouldn’t do it. It would upset the team dynamics.” Having lost his enthusiasm for his job in banking, West went to China and spent a year there teaching English. When he returned to the Coast in 2010, he couldn’t find a job and decided to do a journalism degree, which he hoped would lead to a new career. With positions in journalism scarce, he applied for more than 40 jobs in fields ranging from administration to risk management and began to suffer depression and anxiety. “You go through periods where you

question your own ability when you can’t get a suitable position,” says West. “With every single refusal, the anxiety begins to build and you question what is my value if I can’t even get an interview? Clearly that is something you dwell on. It starts to dawn on you maybe you’re never going to get a position that you find attractive. I have no plans to stop work and I’ll work as long as I possibly can, but you have to find something you have some enthusiasm for.” After seeing the films A Walk in the Woods and Wild, both stories about dissatisfied people using adventure travel to find inner peace, West resolved to take action. He initially planned to cycle around Australia, but when he

spotted the red Yamaha with a for sale sign on it being wheeled out of a house just at the moment he was passing by, he saw it as a fortuitous sign to swap the pushbike for a motorbike. “When you shoot for the stars, you sometimes end up just hitting the moon,” he says. “This project is equally as adventurous and much more doable. The bike size, at 1300cc, is huge for me and it’s very heavy. I needed to get very fit and build strength and endurance.” To prepare for the trip, he trained at the gym and received a donation from Jetts Gym of $1105 – one dollar for each day he’d been a member. He hiked up Mount Coolum and cycled to Noosa four times a week, and lost a lot of weight.

“I want to demonstrate if you’re old, you can still do a lot of things,” he says. “We look old, but hey, we’re still 21 inside. I have white hair and I look old but when I sit on the saddle of my bike, I’m 21. I walk Mount Coolum regularly and I’m fit, but that exterior image of age is there and there’s nothing you can do about that. I’m into photography and now and again, I’ll take my camera up there. If I stop, some young people will come up to me and say, ‘you’re doing so well, it’s not far to go now’. I tell them I’m probably fitter than they are. Age can be very misleading.” West intends to vlog and blog while on the road to raise awareness and funds for beyondblue. His goal is to raise $10,000 and he’s already over the $2000 mark. “Mental health is a huge issue for a large number of people,” he says. “It affects far greater numbers than most people appreciate. Beyondblue supports those that are suffering from depressive illnesses to recover and lead healthy lives. Depression can hit anyone whether they are young, old, male or female. “On each day of this trip, I will reflect on all of my 62 years, so I guess it’s going to be a spiritual sort of journey. I’ve got a lot of questions and I’m looking for a lot of answers and I’ve got a long time to ponder, reflect and think. I don’t know what those answers will be but I’m hoping I’ll come back with a sense of clarity of what direction I’m going to take. “Maybe deep down, I suppose there’s a message there: hey I’m not 21, I’m 62 and this old boy is jumping on a motorbike and taking a big adventure around Australia. Maybe there’s a message that age doesn’t limit you in terms of your horizons.”

oor body image is an issue for young men, who are often suffering in silence, a new study has found. In the first large-scale study into male body image, researchers at the University of Sydney have found that men with bodybuilding and other body image issues are up to four times more likely than females to be undiagnosed. While more women among the 2000 respondents were dissatisfied with their bodies, the study also found men with image issues suffer more psychologically. They were at high risk of extreme dieting and purging, and were far more likely to suffer depression. The data, published in the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Public Health, suggests the use of anabolic steroids, which is strongly linked to male body dissatisfaction as well as eating disorders and muscle dysmorphia, or â€˜bigorexiaâ€™, is increasing. Lead researcher Dr Scott Griffiths says the problem is exacerbated by the stigma associated with males suffering from what

PROUD LISBON PAST PRESERVED AMID CHANGE Dusty old stores blend well with trendy new boutiques and restaurants in Portugal’s grand old capital, Lisbon. By Sarah Marshall

hen I lived in Lisbon 14 years ago, I stayed, rent free, in a dilapidated 12-bedroom palacio owned by a bon vivant called Jorge who wafted through its crumbling corridors with an air of faded grandeur. For decades, Lisbon has been trapped in a wonderful time warp: specialist shops still sell products from behind wooden counters and weathered doorways reveal historic interiors untouched for years. But now change is happening at an accelerating pace, and there’s a palpable energy in a city that’s drifted aimlessly for so long. According to figures collected by Lisbon’s tourist board, the number of visitors to the city increased 18 per cent from 2013 to 2015. To cope with the demand, there has been 150 per cent growth in hotel openings during the same period. It’s partly down to changes in government. Four years ago a centuryold law freezing rent charges was scrapped, sparking investment in rundown properties and a plethora of new restaurants and bars. Fortunately, proud Lisboans prefer to preserve their past rather than raze buildings and start again. Once dominated by government offices and embassies, Rua Dom Pedro V and the Principe Real district is now filled with wine bars, fashion boutiques and design stores. Climb the wooden staircase of revamped 1800s neo-Moorish mansion Embaixada (Praca do Principe Real, 26) to find ornate interiors just as beguiling as the pop-up shops now housed inside. The concept of upcycling was key to the design of new hotel AlmaLusa Baixa/ Chiado, which occupies a former arsenal

Azenhas do Mar is a pretty coastal town near Lisbon on Praca do Municipio – another area of the city enjoying a new lease of life. Director of operations Sofia Brandao shows me the original flooring – one of the few parts not to be flattened in the city’s devastating 1755 earthquake – and highlights fragments from the property’s more recent past: silver-stained mirrors from a barber’s shop hang in the restaurant, and Moroccan tiles once sold in a showroom decorate bathrooms. It’s possible to dine in a neighbourhood restaurant for 10 euro per head and even the 45-minute metro journey from the airport into town costs less than a couple of euros.

From dusty, traditional stores to trendy new openings, local shops champion artisan Portuguese products such as paper-wrapped soaps, household linens and even canned fish. Of course, Lisbon still bathes in the glory of its historical sites – including the UNESCO World Heritage sites of Belem, linked to the Age of Discoveries. Standing beneath the Monument to the Discoveries, where statues of 33 navigators reach out to the River Tagus, I imagine a time when Vasco da Gama set sail to extend the Portuguese Empire. Right now though, there’s so much on Lisbon’s own doorstep to explore. AAP

Take the tram A convenient way to traverse Lisbon’s ankle-busting seven hills, the 19th-century tram network is also great for sightseeing. Route E28 is the most famous, but equally scenic – and less crowded – are routes 12 and 25. Soak up views Spread across seven hills, the city has plenty of high points. Historic trams are an icon of Lisbon 19th century family house in Bairro Alto, which is now a boutique hotel. Weave through the cool, quirky interior to a terrace with views of the Sao Jorge Castle. Eat oysters at the bar, or order creative modern cuisine, while a DJ spins soul music. Cervejaria Trindade, cervejariatrindade.pt Traditional seafood dishes are near heavenly at this former monastery in Bairro Alto, where waiters are dressed as friars. Order fresh shellfish and swig draught Sagres beer, while seated at tables in the vast canteen-like space. An outdoor terrace can be found in the cloisters.

STAYING SANE IN THE HOLIDAYS

Bill Darby hopes the new MPs entering parliament will shake up a system many Australians are feeling disillusioned by.

ow are you surviving in the school holidays mums, dads and grandparents? There are two distinct camps here: the camp who loves their kids being home and the camp where they are counting down the hours until school returns and just about going insane in the meantime. I am in the first group. I love not having to rush out the door at 7.30am with three little people dressed and ready for a big day ahead. The school term is all hustle and bustle. We are kind of like a mad family of meerkats darting to school and to dance class and to swimming class and to doctor’s appointments and everything in between. I seem to live on coffee and wine. Trying to remember which beverage I am allowed to be drinking is at times a challenge. No wine before 5pm is the rule in my house. It is for the best. For the past few weeks we have been more walruses than meerkats. Slow and steady. Putting on some extra layers of fat for winter and kind of happy to just waddle about the home happily. My poor old husband goes to work at what seems the crack of dawn, but my kids and I lay about in our pyjamas and maybe eat chicken nuggets for breakfast. Okay, I am trying to be way cooler than I actually am here, as we do not really eat chicken nuggets for breakfast. But I have thought about it.

I am blessed to have some top bosses who have given me the school holidays off work. I type this not to suck up to those top bosses, or to make you feel like taking to my head with a hammer if you are a working parent in the school holidays. I type this to spread the word that workplaces such as mine exist, and in the hope other bosses may join the brigade of helping working parents. I love a boss who looks outside the box for solutions to get the job done. So the whole household just feels a bit happier. A bit lighter. A bit less stressed. We have been to Maleny Dairies and a movie and even went to see Playschool when it came to town. We have done a day trip to Gympie and we finally checked out that amazing park at Landsborough (yay for the fence) and we have just played at home with our toys. ustralians have the right to be totally disillusioned with the outcome of Saturday’s federal election. Irrespective of which side of the political spectrum one supports, some of the actions and rhetoric we’ve witnessed during the past few weeks is something neither party can be proud of. In what could easily be considered the most reprehensible tactic ever used in Australian politics, the Queensland branch of the Labor Party has admitted sending thousands of text messages to voters on election day that looked like they were from Medicare. Allegations of fraud now surround these actions. Queensland’s ageing population and those most dependant on public health services are among the most vulnerable in our society. To target this group of voters with such deception is inexcusable. While the Liberal Party isn’t being accused of dishonesty in their campaign, they’re not being hailed as overly inspiring either. The question on the lips of many Australians is what happened to the old Malcolm Turnbull during the election? What mechanisms within the Liberal Party led to Turnbull remaining silent on his pet issues such as same sex marriage, the Republic and climate change? These are the concerns not only of young people but ordinary Australians.

Very few people would dispute Turnbull’s credentials as a highly intelligent and successful financial mind. Turnbull had been able to make real connections with the community despite his personal wealth making him an easy target as a tall poppy. What it appears he hasn’t been able to achieve however, is autonomy from the right wing members of his party, who ultimately pull the strings. By sticking to the mind-numbing mantra of jobs and growth, voters may have simply lost confidence. So now we see the rise of the minor parties. We are following in the footsteps of Europe as it battles with extremist parties with dangerous policies, both left and right. Perhaps this is all part of us maturing as a democracy. Perhaps it’s that we simply don’t care or perhaps we choose not to educate ourselves enough to understand where this all leads. The 45th Parliament will see a few new faces, including at least three from the greater Sunshine Coast region. These fresh-faced newbies have the opportunity to challenge those views that are now out of date and bring change to a party many feel let down by. My hope for our new MPs is they remember all the ordinary people they’ve encountered on the campaign trail. Remaining true to your pledges and representing your electorate above all else is the noblest duty of all.

Those dreaming of a trip to Mars will be waiting at least 15 years, the head of the European Space Agency (ESA) says. “If there was enough money then we could possibly do it earlier, but there is not as much now as the Apollo program had,” ESA DirectorGeneral Jan Woerner says. Woerner says a permanent human settlement on the moon, where 3D printers could be used to turn moon rock into essential items needed for the two-year trip to Mars, would be a major step toward the red planet. US space agency NASA hopes to send astronauts to Mars in the mid-2030s and businessman Elon Musk, head of electric car maker Tesla Motors, plans to put unmanned spacecraft on Mars from as early as 2018 and have humans there by 2030. The ESA’s Woerner says it will take longer. A spacecraft sent to Mars needs rockets and fuel powerful enough to lift back off for the return trip and astronauts will need protection from unprecedented physical and mental challenges as well as deep-space radiation. HOW BREXIT WILL WEIGH ON MARKET Justin Scattini is from Ord Minnett in Buderim.

he Brexit vote does not mean the UK leaves the EU overnight, nor is it a foregone conclusion. Under the Lisbon Treaty, any member state wanting to leave has to formally notify the EU first. The parties are then given two years to negotiate the terms of the exit. Legal challenges or even a possible second referendum could still delay or reverse the decision. However, initial uncertainty following the Brexit vote will likely hurt sentiment and see spending slow, depressing growth for the two regions. The effect on the UK is expected to be more pronounced given exports to the EU account for nearly 13 per cent of its GDP, while for the EU, UK exports only account for 3 per cent of its GDP.

Estimates have Brexit taking anywhere between 0.5–1.0 per cent off UK growth in the first year (potentially seeing the UK flirt with recession), while the estimated impact on Euro Area GDP growth is around 0.1–0.3 per cent, with economies such as Ireland, Belgium and the Netherlands more exposed. Central Banks will be expected to step up their policy response to mitigate the risks of contagion and a tightening of liquidity conditions. The Bank of England (BOE) has already announced that it will provide additional lines of liquidity to banks around the referendum. It now appears likely that the BOE will cut rates by as much as 50 basis points by the end of August, taking rates in the UK to zero. Similarly, though we already expect the European Central Bank (ECB) to extend quantitative easing beyond March 2017, the Brexit outcome may warrant an increase in the size of that program from the current €80 billion ($122 billion) a month in asset purchases, and another rate cut of at least 10 basis points.

From an economic standpoint, Australia should be relatively sheltered, but Brexit will weigh on our equity market. Financials, in particular the banks and asset managers, could be harder hit given fears of tightening liquidity and lower equity values. Domestic mining companies with UK-listings, such as BHP and Rio, will also be caught up in any sell-off, and further, Australian companies with decent exposure to the UK and Europe being dragged down.

As no member has left the EU before, there is little experience to draw on, but to put things into context, if markets were to go back to the depths of the Europe credit crisis of 2012, then the downside could be 15–30 per cent (from pre-Brexit levels). This may be too bearish given some mitigating factors, such as the potential Central Bank policy responses; the gradual realisation that the referendum result itself is not binding, nor does it take effect immediately; and bargain hunting by investors. Despite the negative sentiment surrounding the vote, we believe that in these more volatile markets there will be relatively more support for yield based strategies and those benefitting from a lower AUD/USD. TODD’S GROG Todd Widdicombe ponders why we didn’t vote for Rick Astley in the election as he samples a new XPA.

o I was driving to work last week thinking about Will Smith’s recent global apology for his 1999 film Wild Wild West. He says he admits it was just terrible and has issued a full apology to the people of the world who spent their hard earned going to see it. Good on him for being so cool about his failures and that. Having said that, I’m still waiting for an apology for the movie he made with his kid Jaden, After Earth. Then there’s Hancock, and don’t even get me started on his golf flick The Legend of Bagger Vance. It

was originally meant to star Nicolas Cage. You know a movie is super bad when even Nic Cage turns it down. That guy’s like fructose, he’s in everything. But I digress. I was driving to work thinking, ‘you know, a lot of conflict back in the Wild West could have been avoided had the cowboy engineers and architects built a town big enough for everybody’. Not the only random thought I had for the week. If dogs could call 000, what would the emergency be? “Hello, 000, this is Buddha the black lab, listen a boy just threw a ball to me and I can’t find it anywhere… like it’s totally vanished. We were on the beach and everything was grouse and then suddenly, no ball. Can you help me?” “Just calm down sir, did you check his hand?” “What? Well of course I checked his… bugger.” Did Iceman kill Goose in Top Gun? Iceman took far too long to engage Viper and when he finally bailed instead of banking right like Maverick instructed, he banked left, consequently leading Maverick and Goose directly into his jet

wash, which caused them to whirl into an uncontrollable flat spin in which Goose was killed trying to eject from the plane. All evidence points to Iceman’s negligence here; perhaps it’s manslaughter at best. Either way, Goose died 30 years ago and yet for some of us, it’s still too soon. Some other random thoughts have popped up this week. Shouldn’t we have all voted for Rick Astley this election? His platform’s pretty strong. He’ll never give you up, he’ll never let you down, he’ll never run around and desert you. He’ll never make you cry, he’ll never say goodbye, he’ll never tell a lie and hurt you. Does anybody realise you can actually go to the gym without letting the world know on Instagram or Twitter? Ever notice how when you say the word ‘crisp’ it moves from the back of your mouth to the front? Did you know that if you say the word ‘orange’ really slowly, it sounds like you’re saying gullible. Yep, got ya. Of course, while I’m collating all these random thoughts, it’s always good to have a cold refresher on hand to quench the

thirst for knowledge, and this week it comes all the way from South Australia. STILL AS SUAVE AS EVER The new Jag didn’t need much tweaking. By Peter Atkinson, AAP

here’s always been something timeless about the way Jaguar designs its cars. That may be partly due to the fact that for several decades, its cars changed very little in appearance at all. Happily, Jaguar’s ‘gentlemen’s club’ design language has given way in recent years to a range of vehicles that is as beautiful, and contemporary, as any marque on the planet. Leading the way has been the XF. Launched to great fanfare in 2007, the XF has become a modern classic.

With that in mind, it should come as no great surprise that the secondgeneration XF, which hit Australian roads this year, looks similar – at least at first glance – to the first. Old habits die hard. Or, more likely, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. For the most part, the changes in this latest XF have taken place beneath those gorgeous, curving lines. It’s lighter, quicker, more fuel-efficient and more dynamic in its performance. The XF gets new engines, from a frugal new turbo-diesel at one end of the range to a sparkling supercharged V6 – tested

here – at the other. There’s also new technology including autonomous braking and collision avoidance and a self-parking function. Building upon the company’s use of aluminium construction, the new XF has shed a further 190 kilograms of weight, while delivering increased torsional stiffness – up almost 30 percent – for sharper ride and handling. Inside, the changes are equally subtle – cabin layout is fundamentally the same but with some interesting tweaks including a 12.3-inch TFT instrument cluster and an upgraded ‘InTouch’ central touch-screen, coupled to a premium infotainment system. The V8s have disappeared – at least for the moment – leaving the supercharged petrol V6 XF-S as the performance hero. The XF-S tested here costs $128,200 – certainly not cheap, but less than you’ll pay for models from rivals like MercedesBenz, BMW and Audi. If its 280 kilowatts and corresponding pricetag are a bit steep, the XF ranges through turbocharged four-cylinder and turbo-diesel variants, right down to the entry-level XF Prestige 20d at $82,800. The XF-S is a treat to drive and sounds the part, too. Handling is exemplary – delivering just the right amount of grip

and balance while not losing sight of the car’s luxury pedigree. The eight-speed auto – coupled with the wheel-mounted gearshift paddles – further enhances this drivetrain, both in performance and cruising mode. The new XF is unquestionably more evolution than revolution of the muchadmired model it replaces. You can hardly blame them for not straying too far from a car that brought the company back from the brink.

JAGUAR XF-S HOW BIG? With increased interior space, it’s one of the more generous choices in this mid-sized executive segment with decent front and rear space and a large boot. Yet it feels light and nimble to drive. HOW FAST? The supercharged V6 of our test machine delivers 280 kilowatts – which would make most V8s blush – and it will reach the speed limit in an intoxicating 5.3 seconds. HOW THIRSTY? Despite its performance credentials, the eight-speed auto helps it achieve decent fuel-efficiency of 8.3L/100km. HOW MUCH? The flagship XF-S costs more than $130-grand onroad.

Donkey Kong is in the house. J-Bay is starting with some 12 foot plus waves, and light offshore. It should be an exciting few days ahead. It will be fitting if Fanning and Wilson are the last two standing. So, I had a look at shark attack data. Yes, there is a website of this name. And the winner winner, chicken dinner for the most fatalities is Australia in first place, followed by America in second place and South Africa in third. All data is recorded as unprovoked - does that mean some idiot actually provokes a shark attack? Anyhoo… waves on Saturday with southwesterly winds. Sunday brings devil wind.

FISHING REPORT with Wayne Nilsson from Maroochydore Fishing World

ESTUARY: Bream are being taken from Maroochy bar to Eudlo Creek, and along Mooloolah rock walls using pillies, fowl gut, prawns and squid. Whiting and flathead are around at Twin Waters with yabbies the best bait, pumped from Goat and Channel islands. Jew and trevally are being caught using jigged plastics at the motorway bridge pylons. SURF: Good sized tailor are taking pillies at Pincushion just after dark. Sea bream and dart are working the same gutter early mornings. Whiting are taking pippies along Maroochy beach. Sharks are chasing mullet schools. Please remember to pick up plastic bait bags and dispose of properly. OFFSHORE: Sweetlip, parrot, Maori cod and squire are taking squid and cut baits at the pinnacles on Murphy’s Reef. Old Woman Island has been returning some fine golden trevally on live baits. Snapper, pearl perch and Spanish mackerel are taking micro jigs on the Barwon banks. FRESHWATER: Freshwater licenses will only be available online or at Australia Post Offices from now. The brackish water of both the Maroochy and Mooloolah rivers have been producing some nice bass on green or black shallow diving lures with floated worms and shrimps working just as well. Surprisingly good catches of golden perch and saratoga at Borumba and Lake Baroon with bass thrown in as well. Local advice works wonders.

SPORTS MAD Richard O’Leary is worried he has cursed all the sports teams he follows and is opting out of the Olympics.

t’s going to be an ordinary Olympics my friends. I can just about categorically state that at Rio this year, we will be coming back with less gold than the time my parents drove me around as a four-year-old trying to find the end of a rainbow. How can I be so sure? At the risk of sounding a tad grandiose… it will all be my fault. You see, 2016 has not been a great year for my sports teams. Where do I start? Well, the beginning is always good and in this case, all roads lead to a small pub in Gerringong on the South Coast of New South Wales. You see, the hotel was run by a young bloke called Mick Cronin, who also happened to play for the Parramatta Eels rugby league team, and because my dad drank at the abovementioned pub, our family signed up to follow the mighty Blue and Golds. Have a few beers after work ever caused more heartache? Undoubtedly yes, but these schooners consumed by
