People love the beach but I have a phobia of sharks, so although I have lived on the Sunshine Coast since 1990, I have not set foot in salt water in 26 years. I think I watched Jaws when I was too young. I cannot step foot into the salt water.

BEST DAY IN YOUR LIFE? I think it would be three and it would be the kids being born.

WHY DO YOU LIVE HERE? We moved up here when Uncle Coop (Lindsay Cooper) got the Ettamogah Pub, so we invested. We were New South Welshmen, travellers here, but we saw an opportunity to invest. A meeting in Caloundra at someone’s house with a few of the Liberal National Party people and we were talking about who would be the candidate for Kawana, and I was sitting there and no-one was mentioning me. They were coming up with all these names and I was thinking of all these reasons why that person wouldn’t be appropriate and then there was one person who then looked at me and said “What about you Jarrod?”, and that’s when it all started for me.

JEMMA’S PICKS The dust seems to have settled after the abrupt publication of Harper Lee’s Go Set a Watchman, the not-quite-a-prequel-orsequel to her beloved To Kill A Mockingbird, which happens to be my favourite American novel – ever. I picked up Watchman with trembling hands, knowing it could never be as good as Lee’s Pulitzer Prize winner. And it’s not, but I would still encourage book-lovers and Lee fans to read it, if only so I have someone to talk about it with. I am heading off overseas next month and plan to take Anna Funder’s The Girl with the Dogs with me. I absolutely adored Funder’s 2011 novel All That I Am, and am keen to dip into this, her third book. I recently saw John Birmingham at Outspoken, the wonderful literary event held regularly in Maleny. The selfeffacing Brisbane writer told the Outspoken audience that some

A THRILLING RIDE of his books “improve with altitude”, and as I am getting on a plane soon, I will certainly be checking out the airport bookshop for Emergence, the first in Birmingham’s David Hooper Trilogy. So, what else would I recommend? Earlier this year, at a friend’s suggestion, I picked up Charles Dickens’ A Tale of Two Cities (I have two copies on my bookshelf but have read neither). Why did I wait so long? Though set in an incredibly bleak period in French history, it’s a beautifully poignant story. Still in a French mood, straight after Dickens I moved on to Patrick Süskind’s Perfume, which I first read about 10 years ago. They say smell is the most evocative of the senses and it’s hard to argue with that after reading this book. The story, like an overpowering aroma that lingers long after the source of the scent has left the room, stays with you. Great stuff!

Released back in January, The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins has been smashing sales records in the UK and US. Close to two million copies had been sold around the world in the three months after its release, and the books are still selling like hot cakes. Hawkins says, “I developed a taste for crime as a teenager with Agatha Christie, but I think it was Donna Tartt’s The Secret History which really opened my eyes to the possibilities of the psychological thriller. I read a lot of crime fiction now.” Many readers have drawn comparisons to Gillian Flynn’s acclaimed Gone Girl, which Hawkins is flattered by, but adds that her novel “is a very different book. While Gone Girl deals with the disintegration of a marriage, in The Girl on the Train we have already passed that point: Rachel’s marriage is gone, she has no job, no home, she has lost everything. Most importantly, she’s lost control – whereas Flynn’s protagonist is very much in the driving seat.” Hawkins says she has always loved creative writing and has been writing

BOOKSELLERS’ PICKS We asked two local booksellers what they have been curling up in bed with. Here’s what they had to say. GRAEME BOWDEN, THE BOOKSHOP AT CALOUNDRA

KAY NIXON, BOOKS OF BUDERIM

The Orchardist, by Amanda Coplin. One of my very favourite books of the past few years. Amanda has created a wonderful story with an excellent cast of characters that will stay with you for a long time. It is set in the north-west of America at the start of the last century. Talmadge, the orchardist, befriends Jane and Della, two young but troubled sisters. The way their lives entwine and involve the other participants in the story is both tragic and beautiful. This is a book you must read.

The Little Paris Bookshop, by Nina George. This would be one of the most enjoyable books I’ve read this year. A bookshop that considers itself an apothecary, on a canal boat with two cats in Paris – sounds like a captivating formula? Well it is. Quirky characters, a crazy romp through the French canals along with some quite profound observations on life. Yes, there is some inward (dare I say, French) angst, but it is worked through with a satisfying result.

A Time to Run, by JM Peace. The debut novel by a Sunshine Coast author is a very good and different crime story. Sammi Willis – a police officer on a night out with a girlfriend – is befriended, drugged and kidnapped by a serial killer. His usual pattern is to release victims in the bush, hunt and kill them. This time, however, it will not be as easy as it usually is. I am looking forward to the next book from this author and hoping it involves some of the same characters, particularly Detective Janine Postlewaite. This is a very good read.

Addition, by Toni Jordan. This book has been around for some time, but it has not lost its appeal. It is a really delightful story about a young woman, Grace, whose life is ruled by numbers. Numbers affect how she buys her food, where she sits or how many times she brushes her teeth. All determined, never varied. She is in love with Nikola Tesla, the inventor, even when Seamus enters her life. This is laugh-out loud funny but with a much deeper story. You will love Grace and her story will leave you feeling good.

The Other Side of the World, by Stephanie Bishop. Stephanie has written a novel of a scope that I find difficult to sum up in a few words. Charlotte is a young Englishwoman married to Henry, an Indian man raised in England. They move to Australia with their children looking for a better life. I wonder how many of the English migrants who came to Australia in the 1960s had these difficulties. I would imagine quite a lot. This is a beautifully written, evocative novel that will exercise all of your emotions. It would be an excellent choice for any book club.

We Never Asked for Wings, by Vanessa Diffenbaugh (to be published in September). This is the wonderful new novel from the author of The Language of Flowers. I am in awe of the talent of this young woman. Like her first book, Wings is the story of a number of supposedly ordinary people whose lives are full of challenges – Letty and her children Alex and Luna, Carmen and her daughter Yesenia, Wes, the father of Alex, and Rick, the workmate trying to help Lette. You will enjoy the journey with them all. This is an outstanding story that you should read.

Amy Snow, by Tracy Rees. If you like the style of Bronte and Austen with a hint of intrigue, this may be a modern author who can continue to feed that appetite. I would not place it up on the same pedestal, as that style is no longer original, however, it is quite well executed. Amy is the baby who is found by a girl in a privileged situation, abandoned in the snow. Much to the disgust of her parents, she takes the baby in and they become close friends. The story follows a quest given to Amy as a dying wish by her carer. Through this quest she discovers more about herself as a young woman in early Victorian England and the secret of her dearly missed friend. The Versions of Us, by Laura Barnett. This debut novel is reminiscent of the movie Sliding Doors. Three versions of outcomes are explored in a relationship that could have taken different paths if circumstances early on had been different. It makes you wonder how much of your life is according to chance, your choices and destiny. Eva and Jim were both students at Cambridge in the late ‘50s and their connection is woven with other lives and events throughout the novel with a number of intriguing twists.

Archie Greene and the Magician’s Secret, by DD Everest. Older children and teens looking for a book in a similar style to JK Rowling, this is one for you. On his 12th birthday, Archie Green receives a mysterious parcel and so begins an exciting adventure when he discovers that he is one of a line of gifted book binders. A hidden library beneath the known library in Oxford is where magical books are stored. Someone, though, is trying to get hold of the darker magical books and so Archie and his new-found relatives have to stop the evil forces that would love to get hold of such power. I found it to be an exciting and at times fun read and I look forward to the sequel. Snail and Turtle are Friends, by Stephen Michael King. This book by Australian author/ illustrator Stephen Michael King was shortlisted by the Children’s Book Council this year, and rightly so. It is a gentle picture book with a message about appreciating each other’s differences, a message as important to adults as children in the present climate of mistrust and fear. The illustrations are also enchanting. Children from three onwards will enjoy this book, which will probably become a keepsake for later in life.

HEALTH HUB’S HEALTHY OUTLOOK The Oceanside Health Hub in Kawana is five years ahead of forecasts in terms of employment generation and economic growth, according to the developer of the site Stockland. FINALLY – A KIDNEY FOR KATE

or the past three years Kate McColm-Fulton’s life has been in limbo. Two days before celebrating her 21st birthday, the Caloundra student was diagnosed with the rare autoimmune disease Goodpasture syndrome and was told she required a kidney transplant. She was placed on the organ transplant list along with the 1600 other Australians who are in need of a lifesaving transplant. Earlier this month, to recognise DonateLife Week and assist in raising awareness about organ donation, the 24-year-old spoke to My Weekly Preview about her illness. “There are more people waiting for kidneys than any other organ,’’ she explained. “The wait list average is four years.’’ Coincidentally, on the evening the My Weekly Preview story published, Kate received the phone call that has forever changed her life. Two days later she was given a life-saving kidney transplant. “On the Friday night my specialist called me at 10.30pm,’’ Kate, who was in

hospital dialysing at the time, says. “When she first called I didn’t even think about it but I thought something might have been wrong with my bloods. “She said: ‘I think we have a kidney for you’.’’ As the specialist team tested the kidney to confirm compatibility, Kate and her family waited with bated breath. She finally got the okay the following morning. “I felt relief, happiness,’’ she says. “There is nothing you can compare it to really. It was really surreal.’’ Kate underwent the two-and-a-half hour surgery at Brisbane’s Princess Alexandra Hospital. She will now spend the next two months living in an apartment close to the hospital so she can be closely monitored by her medical team. “I’m feeling well. Honestly, even the first day out I felt better. “I met the guy who got the other kidney as well… it’s like there was a connection. It’s pretty amazing.’’ While Kate will never know who she received the kidney from, she is able to write monitored letters to the family

through DonateLife. Kate remains adamant that the message is not about her personal battle. “It’s about the wider community of people waiting for transplants,’’ she says. “There needs to be a lot more awareness about organ donation.’’ Each week an Australian dies waiting for a transplant. Last year, 1117 Australians received an organ transplant as a result of the generosity of 378 donors whose families agreed to donation at the time of their loved one’s death. In Australia, the final decision is always made by the family despite their loved one’s wishes. This is why it’s important to inform family members of your decision, in addition to registering. The Australian Organ Donor Register is the only national register for people to record their decision about becoming a donor after death. Since the program launched in 2009

there has been a 53 per cent increase in organ donors. More than 90 per cent of families consent to donating if their loved one is on the register. However, only one per cent of people who die in hospital are suitable as a donor as donation of major organs is only possible after brain death and from a person who is on life support. ’m standing in the middle of scenery so staggeringly beautiful, they should probably reshoot the opening scenes of The Sound of Music here. Picture-perfect pine forests, distant snow-capped mountains, even a gentle stream tinkling along in the background for good measure. And yet, for all nature’s magnificence in the Aosta Valley, in Italy’s Western Alps, there is only one thought in my head: “I really, really want another hot chocolate”. An hour earlier, in the equally quaint and made-for-a-postcard Italian alpine village of Gressoney-La-Trinite, we’d

stopped off for an energising snack to fire us up for our two-day hike, and that snack was the most delectable hot chocolate you could ever imagine. And now, it’s all I can think about. “Sorry, no more until we get back tomorrow,” shrugs our guide, striking off along the alarmingly steep footpath. There are far greater culinary pleasures in store. After seven hours of walking, we arrive at our accommodation, Chalet Hotel Breithorn, where we’re served a dinner that gives me a new obsession. A Walser version of macaroni cheese – made with local cheese and bits of

salami – is the best I’ve ever tasted. It’s not your traditional Italian fare, but then this bottom corner of the Alps isn’t your traditional Italy. Populated by the German Walser people, fleeing religious persecution in the 12th and 13th century, everything from the architecture, to the language (Walserdeutsch, a dialect that sounds similar to Flemish but is resolutely German) and the food (hearty, carbfuelled dishes) is influenced by a certain Teutonic nuance. On day two of our hike we make a few stops as we wend (mercifully) down the valley and back to Gressoney. Quads and glutes now aching, our pace becomes noticeably less urgent than the day before. The fact the sun is blazing also slows us down. It’s easy to forget just how hot the Alps can be in the summer months, as in the winter, this area, known as Monterosa, is a popular ski destination. We cool off by filling our water bottles in mountain streams, then prepare to indulge in yet another guilty pleasure – wine tasting. We find a small bar in Gressoney-LaTrinite, offering incredible food and fantastic wine. The master taster dutifully explains the basics of tannins. It’s a mystery why they’re not sending this wine

out to the wider world – the 14 per cent red is incredible. But they rightly want it all to themselves. Thankfully, they’re a little less strict on the amount of local salami and cheeses you can take away, and after a quick scout of the local shops, my suitcase is packed with offensively pungent delicacies. The Aosta Valley boasts some of the greatest treks in the Alps, including the 10-day, ominously named Trail of Giants. Perhaps if we’d attempted some of those, we’d have really deserved the endless treats we keep indulging in. AAP

choolkids across the Sunshine Coast can’t get to the beach fast enough when the swell is up, but 15-year-old Josh Whiting’s excitement isn’t spurred on by surfing. Instead, he prefers to be under a wave, or in its glassy vortex as it crashes on top of him and his camera. It’s there that he is happiest, and it’s there that he has captured some incredible images of Mother Nature at her finest. “It’s a good feeling as soon as the wave comes over and you know it’s a good one,” says the budding photographer. The year 10 Chancellor State College student was given a GoPro camera by his parents for his 13th birthday. Ever since, his bodyboard has taken a backseat. “I guess if I take my camera out there I capture the moment in that day and I will always have the photos. With the bodyboard, I will only be catching the waves once and probably forget about it,” says Whiting. His Mother, Donna, is his number one fan and recently encouraged him to print and sell his photos. She had some hanging in their family home at Kawana, which

have been snapped up by buyers. “Kids go through phases where they’ll want to do something and want to collect all the gear to do that something, and you think, ‘Oh yeah, they’ll do it six months and forget about it’, but Joshua hasn’t been like that with his photography work. He always wants to know more and more.” “He always strives to be the best he can be, and if he sees something and he doesn’t know how to do it, he will make a point of researching until he knows how to do it,” she says. Now, with several sales under his belt, a small sponsorship deal with a zinc company and a quickly-growing Instagram account that showcases his work (@joshhwhiting), you might think Josh would be zooming in quickly on a career in photography. But this talented teen has other ideas for now. “I’m probably going to go to uni and be an engineer. At school we are doing all these career planning things and. . . that has been popping up, so that’s what I am going to go for.” And don’t expect him to skip school, even if perfect sea conditions beckon.

“School’s first. I’m pretty good at school, getting good grades, so I’ll stick with that first.” But when the bell rings, Josh heads to the beach, camera in hand. His goal is to raise the $3000 plus needed to buy underwater housing for his Canon 70D, which will allow him to take higher quality photographs. “Every second day we are at the beach. He calls that his office now. ‘I’ve got to go to the office now Mum, I’ve got to go to work,’” laughs Donna. His work doesn’t just require skill behind the lens. It also requires

considerable confidence in the water, fostered in Whiting’s case by a childhood spent at the beach. “I’ve only hurt myself badly once. I got washed up onto the rocks,” he says. “He’s come home a few times and said, ‘Look at this bruise, but I got a great shot,’” says Donna, who knows a couple of wipeouts won’t deter her son from pursuing his passion. “This is just the beginning of what we’re going to see from Josh with his photography. What he’s creating is something original. He wants to just stay on the ride and see where it all ends up.”

here’s one downside to Facebook I haven’t seen mentioned anywhere. With its countless re-posts of quotes and motivational messages, the world’s leading social media platform has flooded lives with hollow encouragement and has diluted inspiration. It’s a lesson in the truism that everything on this planet has upsides but also downsides. To be hit each day with quotes from truly great achievers like Gandhi, Walt Disney and Steve Jobs is actually a little overwhelming. A timely quote, just at the moment it’s needed, is valued and encouraging. But they come too often, so often that it’s hard sometimes not to roll the eyes when we get a repeat dose of Buddha suggesting again the secrets of happiness, or of success, or of love, or of some other wonderful thing. Even leaders and celebrities, who we think might have some unique take on life, often re-post quotes from others. Combined with other time taxing posts, it’s no wonder it’s sometimes a relief to just log off. It’s understandable rumours circulate about Facebook’s loss of traction in the world.

Thankfully, real human interaction again comes to the rescue. A simple coffee catchup with a friend recently had me buzzing. It was fun. We chatted about everything, from politics, our journalism careers, our families, our chickens. . . lots of stuff. We shared stories about our own unique experiences that delivered to us our own important life lessons. It was warm, inspirational and uplifting. We even spoke about Facebook and how those many repeated cool quotes and life messages have lost their punch. They are meant to be delivered, quietly, poignantly, at the time in our lives when we need a lift. They were never meant to be thrown around like confetti. Facebook and other social media have provided avenues for further reach geographically, conveniently and numerically, but it’s potentially robbed us of truer, deeper and more beneficial human interaction. There is no comparison to human contact, traditional human interaction, a laugh, a cry, or sharing some personal life lesson, with someone in person. Give it a go. It’ll make for less rolling of the eyes, and instead encourage a smile and inspire the spirit.

ipartisanship in federal politics has been a very rare commodity since the ascension of Tony Abbott as Prime Minister in September 2013. Apart from an ever-increasing level of cruelty toward vulnerable asylumseekers, heavyweights in the major parties are seemingly only united in their desire to prevent their expense claims from being brought into line with community expectations. The Australian public is outraged and rightly so. Some politicians are either dishonest, or grossly incompetent, seemingly incapable of distinguishing between what can and cannot be properly claimed – a feat managed by people in all other walks of life. The comments about ‘lifters’ and ‘leaners’ and the ‘age of entitlement’ have come back to haunt the Coalition. But Labor cannot escape culpability. The fact that members on each side of what was once considered the political divide have made suspect claims, prompting an unwillingness to point the finger, cannot be a sufficient reason for maintaining the status quo. The Prime Minister’s prescription is an inquiry, which promises to fiddle

around the edges and produce a report in July 2016, which it is expected will sink without a trace. Such an approach will simply sow the seeds of the next scandal. Many of the recommendations of the 2010 Belcher review of Parliamentarian’s expenses have not been implemented. One of these, that individual MPs publish on their website details of an expense claim at the same time it is lodged, would appear to be a simple way to achieve transparency. In the area of public and professional ethics, this is known as the ‘newspaper test’ – an individual should not act in a way they would not want to see exposed on the front page of the local newspaper. Any individual MP struggling with the correctness of a particular claim may receive considerable assistance in determining the matter by means of a requirement for immediate publication. Another tool may be the quarterly, cumulative, publication of a league table of entitlement claims. Allowing for particular positions, such as Foreign Minister, and large, remote electorates, there may be considerable incentive for individual MPs to be closer to the bottom of such a ladder than the top.

io Tinto has produced a strong first-half result for CY15, with underlying earnings coming in 20 per cent ahead of consensus forecasts. This is one of the strongest beats Ord Minnett has ever seen from the miner and nine per cent ahead of our own estimate. Furthermore, Rio Tinto delivered net debt of US$13.7 billion ($18.9 billion), 10 per cent below Ord Minnett’s forecast, with a large part of the cash flow surprise due to capital expenditure savings. A planned further US$2.5 billion cut in capital expenditure over the next 18 months should allay concerns over the sustainability of Rio Tinto’s US$4.1 billion per annum dividend commitment.

Overall, Ord Minnett believes it is hard to fault the result, leading us to reiterate our accumulate recommendation on Rio Tinto and raise target price to $68 from $66. Underlying earnings of US$2.9 billion beat the US$2.7 billion estimate and topped consensus forecasts of US$2.4 billion. Cash generation was also stronger than the Ord Minnett forecast, with net debt of US$13.7 billion up by just US$200 million, versus an estimate of US$15.1 billion and consensus of US$14.5 billion. The primary driver of lower net debt was reduced capital expenditure, coming in at US$2.5 billion for the half, versus an estimate of US$3.4 billion, along with higher operating cash flow. The company is guiding to revised capital expenditure budgets of US$5.5 billion in 2015 and below US$6 billion in 2017 – previously it was about US$7 billion in both years. The result, in our view, highlights the flexibility the large diversified

miners have in lowering capital and operating expenditure during a downturn and bodes well for the upcoming BHP Billiton (BHP Hold) result. That said, Rio Tinto continues to look more attractive than BHP Billiton due to valuation metrics and its balance sheet advantages. Rio Tinto is trading on a price to net present value ratio of 0.79, a CY16 price to earnings multiple of 13 and a CY16 dividend yield of 6 per cent versus BHP Billiton’s metrics at 0.89 times, 27 times and 6.3 per cent, respectively. Moreover, Rio Tinto’s balance sheet gives it more flexibility to pursue projects and capital management.

The competitors will battle it out this Saturday, August 22, vying for more than $600 in prizes in the jalapeño burrito eating competition. The first to finish, and keep down the hot burrito will take the title. Competitors will not be allowed to have beverages during or immediately after the challenge in order to see who truly is the Sunshine Coast’s Burrito Bandido. The final kicks off at 11am and there will be family activities, spot prizes and giveaways. Zambrero is located on the Mooloolaba Esplanade.

It was 18 years ago when Christine Marriott hosted a surprise birthday ball for her husband Frank’s 60th birthday. The couple enjoyed their involvement with Sunshine Coast dance club the Merry Makers and it seemed like the perfect gift. Sadly, Christine passed away seven years ago but her kind legacy continues, with the ball becoming an annual charity event on the Merry Maker’s calendar. The annual Frank’s Black Tie Annual Birthday Charity Ball will be held at the Lake Kawana Community Centre on August 29. “Christine used to do a lot for charity,’’ says dancer Rose Dooley. “The club decided to keep the ball going. We usually get about 230 people attend. “Each year Frank chooses a couple of charities and he supports ones that don’t get much funding.” The ball will support not-for-profit organisation Riding for the Disabled and Katie Rose Hospice, which provides care to terminally ill people and their carers on the Sunshine Coast. in the practicality and flexibility of its interior space, the ingenuity of its design and its extraordinary ease of use. It is, though, certainly different – and a car that makes you rethink many of our assumptions about the family vehicle. Every angle, every feature, every nuance of this car seems different, quirky, and, at first, unsettling. The feeling of space, the unique styling of the dash and seats, and the incredible “glasshouse” effect of the cabin all combine to make this a fresh, unique driving experience. In part, that space is created by the angle of the windscreen, which is not only wide and deep but extends and curves up over the heads of the front passengers – delivering an extraordinarily clear view of the road ahead – and of the sky above. It almost merges with the panoramic sunroof. The glass on the front forequarters, and the side and rear windows, emphasises this airy feel – almost like you’re sitting in a display case. It’s strange but, like many aspects of this unique machine, somehow quite lovely at the same time. It’s easy to imagine yourself driving this car down the grand boulevards of Paris, admiring the centuries-old

icasso, it’s fair to say, was a fairly different kind of character. The Spanish artistic genius with the mighty moustache created a Cubist style that brought an entirely new perspective to the art world and challenged those who viewed it. So it only stands to reason that a car bearing his name should be different, too.

And Citroen’s C4 Picasso certainly is that. The Picasso nameplate has been around for close to a decade now – worn primarily by the French maker’s take on the people mover. But recently Citroen released a five-seat Picasso that effectively bridges the gap between people mover and

practical hatchback. That original Picasso (now known as the Grand Picasso) delivered seating for eight. Yet this model is only a fiveseater, which, you would think, kind of defeats the purpose of the people mover concept entirely. But not so fast. The virtues of this five-seat Picasso lie

architecture of that wonderful city. Or, indeed, cruising out among the French countryside as you head to your favourite chateau. While the original Picasso can be had with a diesel engine – a distinct advantage over many of its rivals – this five-seater forgoes that advantage and will utilise a turbocharged 1.6-litre petrol version – albeit one that has captured many best engine awards in Europe. It’s certainly smooth and quiet in its operation, delivers surprising performance and responsiveness and, perhaps most importantly, sips as little as 5.6 litres per 100 kilometres on the combined cycle. So, what else is so different about the Picasso? Well, apart from that airy design, the layout of the dashboard is unique – dominated by two separate TFT screens. The bigger of the two houses the speedo and other important information and, because it sits high on the centre of the dash, doesn’t require the driver to look away from the road. The second smaller screen uses touch-screen technology to allow adjustment of audio, climate control and other functions. Other switches are therefore kept to a minimum – although

the multi-function steering wheel offers access to a variety of functions including cruise and speed limiter, audio settings and trip computer options. The gearshifter is interesting – a tiny, spindly stalk that hangs off the steering column that, once again, maximises the available space in the cabin. The auto transmission is a six-speeder that is smooth and unobtrusive. Seating is modern and funky in its design and emphasises practicality and ease of use. The front passenger seat includes a footrest that, when fully extended, turns the seat almost into an aircraft-style lie-flat bed. Odd, but clever. The rear seats, too, are eminently adjustable and the cargo space is generous and flat. Outside, the Picasso features more quirky styling – although its economical

use of space allows it to be small and nimble enough for tight parking spots. A self-parking feature – coupled with a 360-degree view parking camera – makes that function even less of a chore. The Picasso’s functionality can be further enhanced by choosing a $2000 drive assist pack – on top of the $40,990 asking price – that adds lane departure warning, smart high-beam function, active cruise control with collision avoidance system and self-dimming mirrors. Leather is an additional $2-grand and an electric rear tailgate will cost $1000. But even in its standard form the Picasso’s standard kit is generous – including blind-spot monitors, selfparking, sat-nav, keyless entry and start, automatic wipers and headlights, electronic park brake and cruise control. It feels beautifully finished and has an upmarket ambience – albeit in a uniquely presented style. Cabin quietness is impressive and the ride is smooth and compliant – if not exactly sporty. There’s no doubt this car will attract as many fingers of scorn as those of delight. It will polarise and divide opinion. Yet there’s something slightly engaging about the Picasso, in its own unusual kind of way. Just like the original Picasso.

CITROEN C4 PICASSO HOW BIG? Despite being fairly petite on the outside, it’s massive inside – and the vast expanses of glass make it feel even more so. It’s almost like sitting in a glassy room with fabulous views all round. And it can swallow up almost 600 litres of luggage with the rear seats in use. HOW FAST? Not particularly so – the speed limit arrives in a touch under 10 seconds which is average – but typical buyers won’t be looking for scorching performance. HOW THIRSTY? The 1.6-litre turbo petrol engine delivers thrifty driving at just 5.6L/100km. HOW MUCH? Starting at a tick over $40,000, the Picasso feels like pretty decent value, even though it’s not much bigger than your average hatchback on the outside. And it’s probably the cheapest Picasso you’ll ever buy.

SAFER CARS SAVE LIVES

ustralasia’s leading independent vehicle safety advocate ANCAP has joined forces with the Australian Medical Association to lobby for improved safety in vehicles. Through the Avoid the Crash, Avoid the Trauma campaign, the organisations are asking governments and car industry leaders to embrace new technology – starting with Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) – and make it standard in all new cars sold in Australia. AEB is an advanced driver assistance technology proven to reduce the number and severity of vehicle crashes and associated trauma. AMA president Professor Brian Owler has called on politicians, the car industry, and all road users to join

the push for adoption of new technologies to make cars safer. “The key is making cars safer, and educating drivers about the risks of speeding and careless driving,” Professor Owler says. “Too often, I see the horrific injuries and loss of life caused by road crashes when drivers get it wrong. “Prevention is far better than the cure – if we avoid the crash, we avoid the trauma. “Road safety and public health go hand in hand. Road trauma has an enormous impact on the lives of everyday Australians and our health system. “We must do all we can to eliminate it, and governments have an important role to play, especially in working with the car industry to make cars safer, preferably by making life-saving technology like AEB standard features in all new cars. “The safest cars should be in reach of all Australian drivers. “Vehicle technologies such as AEB can help reduce road trauma at a much faster rate than we are seeing now.” ANCAP chief executive officer Nicholas Clarke says new cars available in Europe, Japan and the United States are seeing AEB fitted as standard. He says AEB will reduce the number of death and injuries from road crashes. “While the number of people killed on Australia’s roads is declining, road crashes are still unnecessarily killing around 1,200 people every year,’’ he adds.

So no need to get super excited. Heard some good reports about A bay last weekend with a couple of spotted white pointers who beached themselves. Be careful out there kids. Remember your zinc! Caught up with a friend who told me he is doing a hit and run job on G land. Three to four foot offshore perfection. As I pray for a crowded Brazilian line up my laughter is heard through the office.

ESTUARY: Bream are around in good numbers with better quality at night from the Maroochy Bar and Cotton Tree using prawns and fowl gut. Flathead and whiting are on the drift past Picnic Point and down to Chambers Island with white bait and yabbies the best bait. Plastics are also returning most species. SURF: Some great gutters and holes north and south of Pincushion with bream, dart and whiting working in on the rising tide. Worms and pippies are the go for best baits. You can get tailor at night using pillies in the same area. Stingrays and shovel nose sharks are a nuisance. OFFSHORE: Pearl perch are in surprisingly close at The Gneerings and around Murphy’s with whole WA pillies working better than cut baits. You can get parrot, Moses perch and Maori cod at Currimundi and Caloundra Six Mile. FRESHWATER: A few nice bass are being caught and released at Lake Macdonald trolling lures past the boat ramp. Somerset is another impoundment firing for bass and golden perch with live shrimps and jigged shiny lures the best. Sleepy cod are taking earthworms just off the ranger’s house.

TAKING THE BAIT Clickbait is designed to lure you into the arms of advertisers – cue Jaws theme music. By Richard O’Leary.

“W

hen sharks are eating people, it’s time to cull,” screamed the headline in one of those Australian newspapers owned by that well known, former Aussie, now American billionaire. It described sharks as “human cullers”, “leg maulers”, “life destroyers”. It included this classic line: “The ocean is our domain and sharks have no place destroying lives and livelihoods…” The bloggers took the bait and there was soon blood in the water: “If the ocean is our domain then I suppose space is as well. You can’t breathe there either”; “Are you flipping kidding me?!!! You know Jaws and Sharknado are just made up movies right?!!!”; “Shark attacks since 1791 – 999 with one quarter of those fatal. Road fatalities in 2014 – 1153. Makes sense why we should go on a killing spree”.

There were 700 comments like this when I last looked, and it was only then that it finally dawned on me what the story was all about. It had nothing to do with taking a responsible look at the culling of sharks – but everything to do with the catching of clicks. And readers had fallen for it hook, line and sinker. Clickbait is not new – you’ve seen it countless times. You know the headlines you see online that promise much, but deliver little. They are designed to be so intriguing that you click through despite knowing you are being duped – and all the while you are generating money for the website by creating traffic (whether you read the story or not), which is then used to sell advertising. There’s a general formula that is used… lists, shock and sex. It’s become such a “thing” that satirical websites have been created that put random topics and phrases

together to generate the perfect clickbait headlines. Things like: ‘Klan member asked to leave university because of his small nostrils. First you’ll be disturbed, then you’ll be inspired’. ‘39 words sexy single people write tweets about’. ‘An Ordinary Joe tries to make love to a Disney Princess. The reason will shock you’. Thankfully, the tsunami of clickbait headlines appears to have peaked, with Facebook trying to block them and people becoming wise to the tactic. Which makes the story about the shark cull even more curious. Was it written just to create an online feeding frenzy, with no regard whatsoever for sensible debate? Or, was the journo serious?
