My first job was working for my parent’s restaurant at the tender age of eight waiting on patrons and learning the gift of the gab. It was at this age that I found out that hospitality was for me.
BEST DAY IN YOUR LIFE? The day I came back from Melbourne for Mother’s Day as a surprise for my mother. The tradition in our family is to work for Mother’s Day as a family and to serve our most loyal customers and to me that was a day never to forget when I saw the shocked faces of both my parents.
WHAT ARE YOU CURRENTLY WORKING ON? Running my business, Cocorico Chocolates. I’m known as the youngest chocolatier of Australia and I hope to keep the title for years to come.
CAN YOU NOMINATE A DAY THAT TURNED OUT TO BE A TURNING POINT? November 19, 2011 when I went to work for Eric Pernoud, a french pastry chef in Cooroy. This was when I learnt the art of tempering chocolate and ever since then I have been making chocolate for love and as a career.

FIRST CAR? Loved my first car, but then again who doesn’t? Mine was a 206 Peugeot cabriolet. Unfortunately I wrote it off.
FAVOURITE BOOK? Would it be bad to say I don’t read? Never really have been one for books but if I had to mention one it would have to be A World of Chocolate.
FAVOURITE SONG? Now this is more my style of question, though one that is almost impossible to answer as I love music of all genres. One that touches the heart is Chopin’s Nocturne E Flat Major Op.9 No.2.
BEST ADVICE YOU’VE BEEN GIVEN? A good friend/mentor of mine by the name of Laurent Vancam (chef Laurent) used to say, ‘always say yes’. This was a base idea for business but it also blended into my life to say yes to opportunities and tasks that step me outside of my comfort zone.
WHAT ACHIEVEMENT ARE YOU MOST PROUD OF? I would have to say graduating high school with a full three-year chef’s apprenticeship behind me.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU LIVED ON THE SUNSHINE COAST? I have been situated on the Sunshine coast for 13 years, since the age of seven, when we moved up from Brisbane.
WHY DO YOU LIVE HERE?
Wouldn’t know how to answer that one because to me, regretting something is actually taking a turn on things you learn from. It’s like the quote ,’If there are 100 ways to do something and you fail once, then at least you have 99 other ways of doing it.’
YOU ARE HAPPIEST WHEN? I listen to music, simple! (Which happens to be almost 24/7 seeing as I work and sleep with it).
WHAT FRUSTRATES YOU THE MOST? As much as this is a two-way street, one thing that frustrates me is when people say they don’t like something (food wise) when they haven’t tried it or are going by what they have been told.
IF YOU COULD TELL YOUR 18 YEAR-OLD SELF ANYTHING WHAT WOULD IT BE?
Because the Sunshine Coast is amazing; not only the views and the culture but the people are amazing to have as both friends and customers. I know of people who come up for a holiday just because of how heartwarming and outgoing the Sunshine Coast people are.
Wow, that was only two years ago so realistically I don’t know much else. But if anything, it would be to hold on to those important to you, such as family and friends. They are what make life worth living.
WHERE DO YOU TAKE VISITORS?

A
ussies love exotic food. We covet a great curry and savour spices from every corner of the earth. But are we as open-minded about the people intrinsically linked to those foods when they move into our communities? About 60,000 migrants call the Sunshine Coast home, with up to a third coming from non-English speaking backgrounds. But do the rest of us make them feel at home? Have we rolled out the welcome mat, and been fair dinkum about embracing them as part of our local culture? The reasons international migrants move to the Coast are obvious and no different from the reasons interstate migrants flock here; the beautiful surrounds, the laid-back lifestyle and our pretty spectacular climate. Shirin Jedari, her husband and two sons migrated from Iran two years ago. “It is so calm, without the stress and the pressure. Life is good, the weather is good. There’s no pollution,” she says. The family was living in the Iranian capital, Tehran, a city of 12 million people. They waited three and a half

years for their application to immigrate to Australia to be approved. “We had a good life but the atmosphere of the country is not good. All the people are in stress, and more people are depressed,” says Jedari. She says the main reason they left is because of Iran’s government. “Ours is in such a bad situation. All the people have to work so hard, early morning to late at night and they have not got good incomes. They can’t balance their income and expenses.
Jedari’s husband ran his own business in Tehran, here he has had sporadic casual jobs and is currently working at a car wash. Jedari has had difficulty finding work in her field too. “It’s so hard because I have my Bachelor’s degree in Child Psychology but I cannot do anything with that.” Linda Dennis, the Sunshine Coast’s migrant Settlement Worker, says finding stable employment is one of the biggest challenges migrants face. “There are not many jobs on the

They have to work a lot more. My husband worked from 6am to 11pm,” she says. For them, Australia was a new start with fresh opportunities for a more balanced life. But settling in here hasn’t been easy.
Coast full stop, so that is made more difficult if you’re from a non-English speaking country. The competition is huge, so everybody goes for them. “The other thing that makes it really difficult is that so many jobs are heard about through word-of-mouth and they
don’t have the same networks that other people have… because they’re perhaps not as engaged in the community.” Dennis’ job is to help people like the Jedari family navigate those difficult early days upon their arrival. She’s seen what the stress of immigrating can do to a family. “The toughest thing would be when it just doesn’t meet their expectations. So they’ve perhaps spent all their money, or they find that getting a house is really difficult, the stresses they go through in terms of their relationships as they try to settle in, (and) they get exacerbated when people say racist statements to them. “The other thing that is sad is when people make assumptions. Some of the people can speak three languages and yet they’re spoken to as if a lack of English proficiency equates to a lack of intelligence,” says Dennis. Thuy Woodman moved here from Vietnam six years ago. She was a busy accountant in Ho Chi Minh City and when those qualifications weren’t recognised here, she promptly did the courses required to rectify that. Still, myweeklypreview.com.au

she couldn’t find employment and volunteered at the Nambour Men’s Shed doing the bookkeeping to gain some local work experience. Two and a half years went by and her job prospects had not improved. “I think it is because the labour market in this area is very flat and maybe local businesses don’t trust migrant people. They don’t give me a chance to let me try.” Determined to find work, Woodman changed directions and enrolled in an early childhood education course at TAFE. She graduated in June. “I hope that I can find some work,” says Woodman. The story is similar for Tania Hassan from Bangladesh and Amrita Rauber from Mauritius. But besides their migrant backgrounds and steely resolves to make a life here, these four women have another thing in common – their love of cooking. Last year they joined forces to create Kitchen Carnivale, a cooking school run out of Nambour Community Centre, a place where they’ve all found support over the years. “There is not many different cultures on the Sunshine Coast,” says Rauber. “I just started to miss people from different cultures and I didn’t know anyone here… that’s why I went to the Community Centre, to meet people. “I am a dressmaker by trade. I started cooking for the Community Centre and everyone liked my food and said, ‘Why don’t you do cooking classes?’” says Rauber. Hassan had a cooking school in Bangladesh and helped put a proposal together to present to the Community Centre in mid 2013. At first, there were eight women involved. Each woman teaches recipes from their respective countries and includes stories about their cultures as they go. Afterwards, participants sit together and enjoy their meal.
“We thought that it may help us to find more jobs, and help us to find more business opportunities. We have good times together,” says Jedari. Mark Wischnat is the co-ordinator at the Community Centre. He believes the classes are so much more than just cooking lessons. “The act of sitting around a table and sharing a meal is a significant human activity, and add into that this cultural interaction and the sharing of stories, and it’s something very special,” says Wischnat. “We share food and we share our culture and let people understand more about our culture,” says Thuy Woodman. And Rauber believes food can bridge the gap between people of

Food can be a good link to help people understand.” Seeing migrants make community connections through things like Kitchen Carnivale is just one of the reasons settlement worker Linda Dennis loves her job. Ask her to list what she finds most rewarding and she doesn’t hesitate. “When they feel that they have

made a friend who they can hang out with, when they know how to solve a problem themselves… when they come and say they don’t feel so lonely anymore.” Dennis says our migrant population is growing at a steady rate, and that’s a good thing. “We are probably more similar than we are different. So if we accept the similarities that makes it a better starting point. People all have the same basic needs. The need to feel welcome, the need for friendship… a sense of belonging. “Once you get to know someone individually then all those stereotypes about people from other countries are challenged. It’s worth taking the risk to get to know those people. It changes your world view,” says Dennis. Tania Hassan says there is much to love about her home on the Sunshine Coast, and has just one message for the non-migrant population. “We are people the same as they are. Some people say, ‘Oh you are a migrant, you came from another country’, but we have been here a long time. Our children are growing up here,” says Hassan, and after 14 years on the Coast, she now considers herself an Aussie.

Sunshine Coast Council is calling on the community to await full information before lodging submissions about a proposed 140-bed aged care facility at Buderim. The proposed development exceeds Sunshine Coast Planning Scheme height limits and the council and State Government will seek more information before public consultation, which is expected to begin later this year.
QANTAS RETURNS TO COAST It’s been more than decade since Sunshine Coast Airport has welcomed the flying kangaroo, but that’s about to change, with Qantas announcing it will introduce an early morning return flight to Sydney six days a week. Mayor Mark Jamieson said the 110 seat Boeing 717 would depart the Sunshine Coast at around 6.30am and touch down again at about 7.30pm Sunday to Friday. The new service targets the business sector and will start February 8, 2016. Qantas will also provide a more traditional tourism based service from December 21 to February 2, servicing the Sunshine Coast to Sydney around midday six days a week.

The Sunshine Coast could soon become the only regional centre in Australia able to offer direct international broadband connectivity to global markets, delivering a $700 million annual windfall to the local economy. Sunshine Coast Council has lodged a submission with the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) to start the process to declare an offshore cable protection zone, to encourage the private sector to deliver an international undersea broadband cable. Mayor Mark Jamieson says if granted it would facilitate private investment in Australia’s next off-shore broadband connection to the rest of the world – landing right here on the Coast. “The Sunshine Coast would then be the closest digital connection point in Australia to the leading markets of Asia and the United States. “This off-shore cable will connect directly with global networks and link to Australia’s terrestrial networks like the National Broadband Network (NBN). “There are only five international cable connections into Australia now – four within a short stretch of coastline

TIME TO COME CLEAN The State Government must fess up about the real impacts of urban development on the Pumicstone Passage, writes Keryn Jones.

S
leep and I are the opposite of peas and carrots. Yes, you just read a Forrest Gump quote. Sleep is a big fat tease in my life. It is evasive and hard to hold down to a firm commitment each night. I skimp on sleep too much because, like most others, I am too busy. And when I could finally go to sleep at the end of a long day, I take advantage of a quiet house and stupidly log on to Facebook or Instagram and deprive myself of more sleep in order to find out someone I knew in grade 10 washed their clothing with a new brand of detergent a few hours ago. Riveting stuff. I am a loser. But I know I am not alone in being a loser. How many of us are constantly tired and using coffee to fire up in the mornings, chocolate or some other sugar hit to crank up the afternoon and then wine to keep going at night? Sleep is a pretty elusive mistress at the best of times, but when you throw in work and kids and a million things you have to do, then a good night’s sleep is a rare commodity. There is a new sleep website that is a game changer when it comes to hitting our fluffy white pillows. I am slightly obsessed with this new site, because it is so far proving to live up to its promise to give me a great night’s sleep. You can find the site at sleepcalculator.com. It is not a virus. It is not a funny joke that will play a loud alarm at work to alert your boss to the fact you are surfing the net. It is a
calculator that is easy to use and tells you what time you need to go to bed to feel fresh as a daisy in the morning. So if you need to wake up at a certain time each morning, you should go to bed at one very specific time at night. All you do is punch in the time you need to wake up in the morning and you get a list of beneficial times to go to sleep. If you need to wake up at 6am, the science says you need to go to sleep at 8.46pm, or 10.16pm, or even 1.16am. The sleep calculator dictates that it’s not just how many hours you get asleep, but how many sleep cycles you can tick over. So the theory is, if you wake up at that specific time, it will be between 90-minute sleep cycles. A good night’s sleep consists of five to six sleep cycles. The cycle is the sleep secret. It takes the average Aussie 15 minutes to fall asleep and that is also factored into the equation. So no more going to bed willy-nilly just because you are tired or because you have finally finished your chores for the night. Nope. We are smarter than that now. But for Pete’s sake, when you look at your phone or computer to see how many sleep cycles you should be squeezing in, don’t fall into the trap of checking your Facebook updates! Sweet dreams.

few weeks ago, the AuditorGeneral handed Parliament a report that found the Government is yet to effectively respond to the 12 year-old Great Barrier Reef Plan. The Reef is in poor condition and moves to reduce agricultural runoff lack urgency, purpose and accountability. The Auditor-General’s findings on the Reef Plan show us that we should also be worried about our beautiful Pumicestone Passage, a waterway of international significance because of its ecological values. Much research was undertaken to establish the Water Quality Objectives needed to protect these values and these are clearly stated in the Environmental Protection Act. Like the Reef though, the Passage is in trouble. The current water quality is poor and declining due to land use within the catchment. Governments recognise the need to fix that up, so there’s a plan to use taxpayer money to improve water quality. In the meantime, however, the massive Caloundra South development is proceeding. The project approval requires the developer to prepare a Water Quality Management Plan that only requires runoff from the development to have a ‘no worsening’ effect on the Passage. That’s not good enough. Close analysis of the
information provided shows that the developer’s assumptions are unlikely to be achievable, meaning that even poorer water quality outcomes are possible. The only way to understand what might occur is to model the impacts of runoff from the development using realistic assumptions, without influences from other land uses. Has that modelling been done? No. So, as public money and community energy is expended to clean up the catchment and improve Passage water quality, runoff from Caloundra South will probably mean the long-term Water Quality Objectives will never be met. SCEC and others have brought this matter to the attention of successive State governments and asked for the modelling to be carried out. We get a figurative ‘pat on the head’ in response. It is time for the State government and developers to come clean and confess that their insistence on major development within the Passage catchment comes at the expense of this internationally significant wetland and that more needs to be done to address these very real concerns.

WOOD ON FIRE Arron Wood’s passion for sustainable business is catching on. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw
W
ith his ability to combine a green perspective with solid business acumen and make it all seem easy, some would say Arron Wood is the face of Australia’s business future. The award-winning sustainable business expert will deliver a keynote address at the Connect 2015 conference on July 30, which will bring a line-up of forward-thinking innovators to the Coast. Mayor Mark Jamieson says, “His success as a micro business owner, radio presenter, reporter, sustainable business expert, professional speaker, advisor, environmentalist, communications expert and councillor not only reflects Mr Wood’s diverse range of skills and expertise, but also his ability to be an influencer and understand a broad range of business operations and the challenges faced by business owners on a day-to-day basis.” Wood is managing director of Firestarter, an environmental communication and education consultancy and a councillor for the City of Melbourne. In 2006 he won the
United Nations Individual Award for Outstanding Service to the Environment and in 2001 was Young Australian of the Year (National Environment Winner). He has a long association with the Sunshine Coast through his Kids Teaching Kids program, an environmental education program that has seen 90,000 students participate. “I love the Sunshine Coast – it’s pretty stunning. I think it has some amazing natural assets. That being said, there’s obviously a number of threats – the biggest one is the explosion in growth. Like many cities across Australia, there’s been a huge growth in population.” When asked about the thwarted Sekisui House resort proposal at Yaroomba, Wood says: “Yes, coastal areas need economic development. Things like jobs in the locality are critical and it makes environmental sense as well, in terms of things like travel. But once you lose your natural assets, they’re very hard to get back and some are gone forever. “I’m not against density, sometimes it can lead to good environmental
outcomes. Densification in its own right is neither bad nor good. But we need to be very logical, very data driven, very focused on the long-term stewardship of coastal areas, native vegetation, native animal population, beautiful beaches and marine species, because that’s why people come to the Sunshine Coast. “Yes, having facilities like resorts and hotel accommodation are critical, but they have to be sympathetic to the environmental needs of what is a very beautiful area.” Wood will teach Coast businesses to take advantage of green business opportunities and says they can bypass the current lack of federal government support for renewable energy. “There are amazing opportunities as the global economy starts to shift,” he says. “You watch where the money is going – the uptake of renewable energy is mind-blowing. It’s getting cheaper and cheaper all the time and huge names are investing in that space now.” He reels off an impressive list: the C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group,

American business magnate and renewable energy advocate Mike Bloomberg, the Rockefeller Foundation and General Electric. “I would prefer to put my lot with names like that. The message I’ll be sending to small and micro business at the Connect conference is don’t underestimate the leadership role that you play. You hear a lot about big business and what big business wants. As a small business, you can come together with other small businesses to play a big advocacy role. “When you’re in the day-to-day minutiae of your business, you need to put your head up every now and then to see what’s happening and don’t subscribe to what our national leaders are saying.” Visit connect2015.com.au.

UP AND AWAY IN WA To fully appreciate the Kimberley, you have to see it from the air. By Diana Plater
W
e’re in a helicopter with the doors wide open flying over the magnificent Bungle Bungles in the World Heritage-listed Purnululu National Park of the East Kimberley. The wind is whooshing through the cabin and my hair has turned into a bird’s nest. But what does that matter when you are swooping down over gorges dotted with trees carved into this 350 million year-old landscape? This has to be the highlight of my week in the Kimberley, which includes seven flights. Taking in the view from a helicopter or a small plane gives a totally different perspective, providing a sense of how vast this land is. The huge cattle stations and scattered Aboriginal communities have relied on this mode of transport for years. Known as the Kimberley Aerial Highway, a series of landing strips feature on the landscape, providing
access to gorges, waterfalls, remote beaches and pearl farms. But now a flight over the Horizontal Falls leaving from Broome or one to the Bungle Bungles or El Questro Wilderness Park in the East Kimberley is on many bucket lists. On our first breathtaking flight that took us to Cape Leveque for a swim and breakfast and then back to Broome over King Sound, the Kimbolton Ranges and the Buccaneer Archipelago, we learn the islands below are 1.8 billion to 2.4 billion years old – the tips of ancient mountains. Back on the tarmac in Broome, we chat to Andrew Grace, the owner of Kimberley Aviation. He found that as well as seeing this stunning landscape, tourists also want to engage with the people of the Kimberley, so he has devised tours where an Aboriginal guide relays the story of Jandamarra, the late-19th century Bunuba outlaw who was believed to have magical powers including being able to turn into a bird and fly.
The day of the Bungle Bungle flight we leave El Questro and fly over the Argyle diamond mine, controversial and secretive when it was first mooted in the late ‘70s but now a major part of the East Kimberley economic scene. In Kununurra’s Kimberley Fine Diamonds store you can ogle at the pink diamonds with their prices into the hundreds of thousands of dollars and imagine how the red earth hid their presence for millions of years. DANCE EXTRAVAGANZA Brisbane’s Cloudland Dance Hall at Bowen Hills was an iconic venue for more than 40 years and is the inspiration for interactive stageshow Not Strictly Ballroom, which will be performed in Caloundra later this month. Vocalist and host Paul Hayman has created the show around a replica bandstand with a dancefloor in front of the stage to encourage dancing. The show incorporates the music, history, fashion and dance phases during Cloudland’s existence (not to be confused with the current club Cloudland at Fortitude Valley). Not Strictly Ballroom took 12 months to research and develop with the musical repertoire pieced together in consultation with former Cloudland musical director Gary McDonald. The cast of 20 people, including professional ballroom dancers, is led by Hayman whose vocals capture the mood of every song. The Events Centre, Saturday July 25. Tickets are $44.50. SINGING UP A STORM The Sunshine Coast Choral Society will present their show Celebrating Choral Singing next month. Sometimes inspiration comes instantly or I’ll spend all day thinking of a dish in the back of my head until I get it perfect. I start with the main item, then figure out the best components to go with it. Q. What do you think Sunshine Coast diners are looking for? I think they are after great flavoursome meals using fresh produce, locally sourced seafood and the highest quality meat available on the market.

Growing up I used to cook a lot and wanted to be able to create all the amazing meals you see on the internet, TV and in some restaurants. She has six Golden Guitars under her belt thanks to a successful music career and has entertained audiences on Dancing with the Stars. Now, Melinda Schneider is stepping back in time with her latest show to pay homage to her musical hero, Doris Day. Following on from the success of her theatre stage show DORIS, Schneider is bringing the songs from the show to The Events Centre, Caloundra in a concert format called Melinda Does Doris. Her love affair with Doris began when, in childhood, Schneider saw the 1953 film Calamity Jane. “She was such a huge talent,” she says. “A triple threat as they say – she could sing, dance and act. I thought then she was the best of everything a woman can be and when I grew up I wanted to be just like her.” The concert will feature hits including Sentimental Journey, Que Sera, Sera, Everybody Loves a Lover and Secret Love. A
fter charging out of the gates earlier in the calendar year, the Australian equity market faltered at the end of the financial year. January offered a promising start, which was then boosted by a local interest rate cut and the European Central Bank kicking off its quantitative easing program. Since then though, various factors have sapped investor confidence, including Greece’s ongoing brawl with the European Union; the prospect of the US Federal Reserve raising interest rates; a lift in long-term bond yields and declining earnings expectations. At the time of writing, enough has been said about Greece and China, so let’s look at the other matters.
In relation to the Federal Reserve, improving US data signals the first cash rate rise in September 2015. Indeed, the interest rate market has priced in a two-thirds probability of a September move. The next element was the sharp increase in longer-term bond yields around the world. We see three possible explanations for the interest rate moves: firstly, better growth expectations; secondly, higher inflation expectations; and thirdly, technical factors. From an equity investor’s viewpoint, the relative attractiveness of stocks, especially higher-yielding stocks, diminishes in the face of higher bond yields, hence that market’s contribution to the recent sell-off in local stocks, especially the banks. Finally, a major problem for the Australian market is a lack of profit growth in many companies across a range of sectors. It is difficult for a stock market to
sustain a rally without the underlying support of company profitability. If we drill a little deeper, we can see that earnings expectations for the immediate term continue to be eroded. Since the start of the calendar year, estimates of profit growth in 2016 have dropped from nine per cent to near zero. The sectors where these downgrades are most acute include consumer staples, banks, energy and materials. Given these sectors are some of the largest in the market, they have had a significant influence on the market’s performance.

W
ith cars, just as it is with comedy, timing is everything. And considering it can take a handful of years to bring a vehicle from concept to showroom, that is not always an easy thing to get right. The pages of history are littered with brilliant ideas that arrived too soon or
too late to achieve the greatness they deserved. So it is with the Honda HR-V - a car that was ahead of its time if ever there was one. Honda first released the HR-V in 1997 at the Tokyo Motor Show - no doubt hoping to cash in on the success of its class-leading (back then) mid-sized SUV,
called the CR-V. The HR-V was smaller, sportier and edgier. It was, to all intents and purposes, the first urban SUV. Nimble, economical and clean to run, it should have earned the first slice of the massive sales that this niche category now enjoys. The only problem was, when it arrived in Aussie showrooms in 1999, not
that many people noticed and not many were looking for a baby SUV anyway. It was not a failure Honda sold about 5000 HR-Vs in Australia, but the model disappeared just two years later. It was, without question, the right car at the wrong time. Now, 15 years later, Honda has revived the HR-V nameplate to take its place in a market teeming with small, urban-styled SUV machines. They range from BMW’s X1, Benz’s GLA and Audi’s Q3 through to a plethora of competitors from Mazda, Mini, Mitsubishi and Nissan - not to mention the growing Korean contenders. Once a ground-breaking idea, the HR-V, second time around, is now just another hopeful face in a very large crowd. And while the original HR-V was eyecatching and edgy with its design, the modern iteration is pretty mainstream in its appearance. Like a few models we have seen from Honda of late, it is a bit bland in its styling and probably fails to capture the feeling of quality and excitement that once characterised the Japanese brand. That is not to say the HR-V is a bad thing - in fact, it is a very enjoyable machine that arrives at an accessible

price. It is part of a fresh model assault that Honda hopes will revive its fortunes, which have flagged since the global financial crisis. The HR-V’s strongest appeal is inside, where it breaks some interesting new ground with a very modern take on the centre console. Every control operates via a pair of glossy touch-screens. Known as Display Audio, the first of these is a seven-inch touch-screen that links with your smartphone and can be swiped and pinched in the same way as your iPhone. It is also possible to connect your iPad to the system via Bluetooth and the Siri voice control function can be channelled through the car’s system. The console, too, is unusual in its design, narrow and swoopy with a minimalist kind of appeal. And the driver’s instrument panel is quite cleverly presented with the central speedometer surrounded by a coloured LED ring that glows green when you are driving economically, or a foreboding red when you are too heavy on the accelerator pedal. The HR-V is a sweet little thing to drive, too. It is light and nimble, as most of these urban SUVs are, and delivers
precisely the kind of fuel efficiency you would hope for in a city-focused machine. The 1.8-litre, four-cylinder powerplant delivers a more than adequate 105 kilowatts while keeping emissions low, just like the original HR-V. We covered more than 300 kilometres during our week-long test, virtually all of it in urban traffic conditions, yet used less than its 50-litre tank of fuel and, according to the trip computer, averaged
just 8.5L/100km. Around town that is impressively frugal, particularly considering the HR-V does not get the fuel-saving stop-start system so common these days. It does use a seamless CVT transmission that helps conserve fuel as well as delivering very smooth progress. Our week-long test was spent in the base model of the HR-V - the VTi model
that retails for $24,990 plus onroads (ours had metallic paint for an extra $600). That will get you standard features including 16-inch alloys, daytime running lights, Bluetooth connectivity, reversing camera and climate-control air. An electronic park brake is standard across the range. Step up to the VTi-S ($27,990) and you will add smart entry and pushbutton start, larger alloys (17 inch), LED headlights and running lamps, rainsensing wipers and blind-spot monitoring, plus a city-safe braking system. Target buyers will like the HR-V’s high-riding stance, which gives a feeling of safety and all-round vision to what is a fairly small machine. Honda’s clever magic seats - a versatile system that allows you to choose any of up to 18 configurations for the rear seats maximises the HR-V’s seating and cargo capacity. The HR-V is a practical option for young families or empty-nesters seeking a city-focused machine that adds the space and convenience of an SUV. But unlike its namesake, it is not quite ahead of the times. Honda will hope that its time is now.
HONDA HR-V VTI HOW BIG? It is a compact SUV, meaning it is bigger and more practical than a small hatchback, but a bit roomier than conventional cars of that size. HOW FAST? A sweet-spinning four-cylinder engine gives it punchy performance while not sacrificing fuel efficiency with an official combined average thirst of just 6.6L/100km. HOW PRACTICAL? Honda has added some clever touches to this machine, most notably the way its multimedia system embraces smartphone technology, plus the company’s flexible seating arrangements that maximise its interior space. HOW MUCH? Prices start at $24,990 plus onroads, which is reasonable value. Those seeking more luxury and technology can spend as much as $35-grand.

70% Australian homes are some of the biggest in the world. According to CommSec data, they average more than 240 square metres. The average new freestanding house takes up about 215 square metres. Greenlivingpedia.org reports that Australia has the largest homes in terms of floor area per person. We do like our space.
According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, the average home today has more spare rooms than the homes we lived in a generation or two ago. In 1976 there were 3.1 people living in each Australian household. That figure is now 2.6 people per household and yet the average number of bedrooms per home has risen from 2.8 to 3.1 in that time.
Around 70 per cent of Australian households own or are purchasing their home, according to the Department of Parliamentary Services.
CommSec has found that while the average new home today is around 215 square metres, 20 years ago it was 180 square metres, while 30 years ago it was just 160 square metres.
Australian Bureau of Statistics figures show 22 per cent of 15-to 24-year-olds own or are buying a home. About 50 per cent of 25-to 34-year-olds own or are buying, while by the age of 75 close to 85 per cent of people own their homes outright, with less than three per cent having a mortgage.
Reserve Bank of Australia figures show that in the 1981-82 financial year, the median after-tax income was around $15,000 for Australian households. At that time the median dwelling price was $48,000. That means the price-to-income ratio back then was close to three (in other words, it took about three years of take-home pay to buy a home). These days the price-to-income ratio is about six, meaning the average income-earner needs about six years of pay to buy a home.

The Real Estate Institute of Australia reports that in March 2015, on average 31.5 per cent of income was spent on home loan repayments. Renters paid an average of 24.8 per cent of their income on rent.

So here I was sitting up in bed watching the J-Bay finals last Sunday when suddenly I was about to see Mick Fanning get eaten alive by sharks. Man, that was heavy! I don’t think sharks hunt humans but take a taste test. Lucky for Mick Fanning he was not on the menu that day! I remember a famous Gary Larson cartoon where two great whites sharks are talking to each other while looking down at a scuba diver when one says to the other “don’t eat those ones, they make you fart!” Looks like a fun weekend of small waves so get in early just in case the wind turns. Have a good one and keep off the menu!
FISHING REPORT with Wayne Nilsson from Maroochydore Fishing World
ESTUARY: Bream are moving into the Maroochy River on the high tides with fowl gut and baby blues on ganged hooks the best baits. Whiting are taking yabbies around Goat Island. The Cod Hole area is firing for jew, grunter and estuary cod. Flathead are being caught in the bar area and drifting around the banks at Bli Bli. There are Garfish in the Mooloolah basin around La Balsa Park when the water is clear. SURF: Bream are taking prawns, gar fillet and pippies along Maroochy mouth and along the northern beach area of Mudjimba and Marcoola. Dawn and dusk seem to be the best time of day for the best quality. You can get dart and whiting from close in gutters right along the beaches. OFFSHORE: The water temp is around 20 degrees. Go to the Blinker and Murphy’s for snapper, parrot, sweetlip and moses perch – use squid and cut baits. Cobia, squire and red emperor are at most close in reefs. There are still a few mackerel around but bait schools are a challenge to find. FRESHWATER: Borumba Dam is returning saratoga right up in the Sticks with golden perch, bass and jew below the dam wall. Most of the local dams are working well down at their weirs with rattling lures and spinner baits the best.

FIGHT FOR YOUR RIGHT TO PARTY Kids’ birthday parties might be painful – but it’s a good pain, writes Richard O’Leary.
“W
hat would be a good theme?” is usually how it starts. That simple phrase sets off a chain reaction of more tears, fears and tantrums than the ABC TV series The Killing Season. But unlike the threepart special on the rise and fall of Rudd and Gillard, the Birthday Season won’t drop off i-view after a couple of weeks, it will be re-run in our house every year until the boys leave home. Mentioning the theme is our family’s code for the official end to the promise made minutes after the last birthday party to “never again” go down that path. They say you can’t remember pain, which is why women can have more than one child. It’s also why parents can host more than one birthday for their children. Now don’t get me wrong – kids’
birthdays are great. Especially the birthdays of other people’s kids. Although some parents do cheat and hold them away from home; at a park, an inflatable world or a trampoline emporium. As a family, we don’t take the easy option. We like to raise the level of difficulty to the maximum possible level to ensure heightened stress, increased anti-social behaviour and an abundance of “I told you so’s”. That usually means a combined party with multiple themes, hosted at home. Which is fine, but sometimes we just get a bit over-confident. I won’t go into details to protect the guilty, but these are some of the issues we have faced in recent years. Parking has been a problem. In particular when one guest reversed his new people mover into the deep culvert out the front of our house.
A bloke down the road called Smiley came to the rescue with a winch. It’s fair to say he didn’t get his name because he is always happy. Crowd control has been a challenge. A campfire to toast marshmallows may seem like a good idea, but I’ll give you two tips: don’t light it at the bottom of a slope, or in windy conditions. Not all surprises are good. A phone call about a death in the family is not the best way to get the party started. But we’ll have another one this year. And when the last balloon is popped, the last streamer pulled down and the final food stain is wiped away, my wife will say: “Never again”. And I will smile and say nothing. Because if the truth be told, despite the dramas, I wouldn’t have it any other way. roleary@myweeklypreview.com.au.
