BATTLE OF THE AIRWAVES We all have our favourites, but which Sunshine Coast radio station is really number one? WORDS: Richard O’Leary

RADIO WARS It’s just after 5am on the penultimate day of the radio survey which has been running for three weeks on the Sunshine Coast. Dawn is still a good hour away as the breakfast presenters launch into their days – there’s no such thing as easing into programs, it’s flat out from beginning to end. The ABC is talking turtles, Mix FM is debating whether or not men have outlived their used by date, while Hot FM is riffing on the history of the merkin. It’s a surreal world where no one has a last name (on the commercial stations at least), everyone has been up since 3am, and the level of chirpiness is not only unnatural for this time of the day, but for any time of the day. Rewind to the last time there was a radio survey on the Sunshine Coast: John Howard is Prime Minister, Facebook is just months old, and the first iPhone is still two years away. It leaves the industry in a limbo land where ten year-old statistics, “confidential” in-house tracking and gut feel shape who is winning or losing. Commercial stations ask advertisers to book campaigns on trust – radio’s equivalent to a used car salesman getting a customer to take the test drive after the sale. But it’s all about to change. The Sunshine Coast is just days away from finding out who rules the airwaves. There are three main contenders: EON 14 My Weekly Preview | June 5, 2015

Broadcasting which owns the Mix FM and Sea FM stations is the early favourite, the challenger is Grant Broadcasters which controls Hot FM and Zinc FM, and ABC Sunshine Coast, which in many ways is running a different race altogether, as the results won’t affect its bottom line. The stakes are high. Not only are they competing for bragging rights, the commercial stations are fighting for millions of dollars in potential advertising revenue, and the local ABC dearly wants to beat it’s big brother 612 Brisbane All agree the survey is long overdue, and that the battle will be won and lost in the breakfast programs.

ABOVE THE FRAY Despite not competing for advertising dollars, the radio studios of the ABC Sunshine Coast look more corporate than the commercial stations; soft blues and greys broken up by the national broadcaster’s bright red branding. A scribbled on whiteboard is the only thing that looks out of place with its handwritten reminders to plug Facebook, twitter and the station phone number. Breakfast presenter Jasmin Midgley sits behind a barricade of four monitors, clears her throat and begins. “Good morning, five-past-five, Jasmin Midgley joining you across the Sunshine Coast and Cooloola Coast this morning on ABC Sunshine Coast.

It’s nice to wake up to a little sprinkle on the roof. We’ve made it, it’s Friday.” It’s been a challenging survey for the ABC after its long-serving breakfast announcer Rob Blackmore was called away in the second week of the survey for family reasons. It’s a tough break in an industry where it can take years to build an audience. An on-air sign flashes red as Jasmine talks. For her it’s about having an easygoing conversation, just like two friends over a cuppa. “I imagine I’m talking to my friends, my mum,” she says. She’s so good at it that sometimes I think she is talking to me while on-air, and I just catch myself before attempting to answer the question directed at the audience. She freestyles through the first hour with off-the-cuff questions, arms waving, and ready laughter, covering topics as varied as the weather, Eurovision and the State of Origin.

Experienced journalist Bruce Atkinson joins her to discuss the news stories of the day. The biggest talking point is a report of a police chopper flying over Maroochydore the night before to search for a gunman. Bruce has a dig at police media about not getting back to the ABC’s phone calls and emails. The clock approaches six and Jasmine throws to the news. John Caruso is the content director for the ABC Sunshine Coast. For him the results of the survey will be interesting, but not integral to his station’s future direction. “We’re not in a music battle, we are ABC local radio, we’re about telling local stories. We’ve got a little niche, somewhere where we sit comfortably because no one else is telling local yarns. We’re not a pop breakfast show that talks about the Kardashians or Real Housewives, we tell local stories. It’s about unique content. It’s about

content that you provide that you can’t get anywhere else.”

“I’ll have some butterflies. We’ll have champagne and win, lose or draw, we’ll always have a drink.”

THE CHALLENGER It’s only a hundred or so metres from the ABC to the building next door which is home to Hot FM and Zinc FM, but it’s a whole different world. You walk into studio of the Hot FM breakfast team and it feels like you’ve just had a quadruple shot of coffee – complete sensory overload. The station’s logo is pasted on every spare patch in the studio, Sam (Sam Coward) and Edmo (Lynda Edmunds) wear bright red shirts and they trade one-liners at speed. It’s high energy and looks exhausting. They arguably have the toughest radio gig on the Sunshine Coast as they have been thrown into the middle of a survey just nine months after becoming a team. Edmo spent the previous seven years as a newsreader at the station while larger than life Sam was plucked from his role as the marketing and communications manager for a local charity. He holds up a sign to me – a square of laminated cardboard which simply says “Don’t act, don’t yell” – a reminder for him to just be himself. It take some teams years to completely gel and feel comfortable with each other but Edmo and Sam seem to have fast-tracked that process. Just months after teaming up Edmo did a live cross to Sam while giving birth to her second daughter. “We’re so new, we admit we have our training wheels on, so we just soak it all in – we love it,” Edmo says. If they have a difficult task, their boss’ is even tougher. Steve Hirst started as station manager on the first day of the survey. The reality he faces is a relatively new breakfast crew (after Hot FM’s long established team of Todd and Sami were lured to arch rivals Mix FM last year for its drive program) and no time to fix existing challenges. “The timing could have been better,” he says, “but I’m confident the guys

John Williams we have got on air now, we’re well placed moving forward. To be honest, the survey is important to some media buyers and clients. From our personal point of view, it’s not important. A radio campaign will work if you are the number one station or if you’re the number four station if you put the campaign together properly.”

THE FAVOURITES Mark (Darin) and Caroline (Hutchinson) from Mix FM stand behind two bright blue lecterns in the car park of Lifetime Timbers in Warana which is celebrating 25 years in business. The outside broadcast is a suitable metaphor for their success over the past 12 years in breakfast radio – the whole Sunshine Coast has become their studio. They look relaxed. There’s none of the frantic feel of their competitors, they are comfortable in each other’s company and chat like old friends on and off the air. They have already beaten some of radio’s best talents including Chrissy Swan and Jamie Dunn of Agro fame. They are radio royalty without any airs or graces, Mark says the secret of their success is simple. “The trick is, and it’s taken us a while to figure this out, what we are constantly watching out for is to be where the audience is already, and that way they are more likely to interact with you and listen, because it’s the thing they are after.” Caroline says, “The best radio is when the listener interacts so the goal for us every day is to make the phones ring, so find the topic they want to talk about.”

Mark has the confident patter of a practised salesman. Radio is his life, he spent stints in country New South Wales and Queensland and time in Sydney and Brisbane before settling on the Sunshine Coast. Caroline started in TV in Western Australia before crossing to radio in Victoria. A bloke turns up called Jay, who has been listening to them talk about the police chopper over Maroochydore – and he’s dropped in to tell them what he saw. He starts to blurt it out off-air, but Mark asks him to wait so the audience can hear it for the first time with them. While the ABC was struggling to get comment on the police chopper – Mark and Caroline have people driving to their outside broadcast to be

interviewed. To put an exclamation mark on that point, one of the region’s top cops, Inspector Jason Overland, calls in to tell them the story is not as big as everyone is making out. Some describe Mark and Caroline’s relationship as similar to a married couple (they prefer brother and sister), and there’s no talk of divorce even after 12 years of early mornings. “Mark, and I hate to say this in front of him, but he actually makes me laugh every day. So it’s usually quite fun for me to come to work,” Caroline says. “Yeah, yeah, I was done after about four weeks,” Marks quips. As you read this, the chances are results are still being collated, with radio stations to be emailed the findings on June 10. Most insiders predict Mix FM and Sea FM will secure first and second, with Hot FM and Zinc FM to get third and fourth, and the ABC to finish fifth. In reality nobody knows; at best, those predictions are educated guesses, and only one thing appears certain as John Williams the station manager of EON Broadcasting explains. “The fact there hasn’t been [a survey] in this market for ten years, you wait for an email to jump through from the research company to tell you what happened. I’ll have some butterflies. We’ll have champagne and win, lose or draw, we’ll always have a drink. We’ll definitely have a quiet one.” That will be the only quiet thing since the survey started.

80,000 More than 80,000 cubic metres of sand will be pumped onto popular Coast beaches this month to assist with erosion protection in the lead-up to the summer storm season. Works will begin on Maroochydore Beach on June 9, while Mooloolaba sand pumping will start on June 10. Small sections of the beaches will be closed for the works and traffic measures will be in place throughout the project.

TRAMWAY CENTENARY The centenary of the Buderim-Palmwoods tramway will be celebrated on June 20 with a re-enactment of the official opening ceremony. A memorial plaque will be unveiled at the event, to be held at the old station site at the corner of Lindsay Rd and Main St, Buderim at midday. CROC HUNTER’S POSTHUMOUS AWARD Steve Irwin has been awarded the first posthumous Queensland Greats Award for his lifetime achievement in wildlife conservation. Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk says it was a great loss to our state and country when Steve unexpectedly passed away in 2006. Since 2001, 75 individuals, 10 institutions and one posthumous recipient have been honoured as Queensland Greats.

The second year TAFE students, who are completing a Diploma in Applied Fashion Design and Technology, drew on inspiration from Sunshine Plaza’s autumn/winter style to create illustrations. Student Maddison Burr based her piece on the crop trend and drew inspiration from the work of famed haute couture illustrator Rene Gruau. Other students used other popular styles in vogue such as hippie deluxe and sports luxe.

CITY MAKER

Building a city is an unusual job description, but that’s what the former CEO of the Sunshine Coast Council John Knaggs has been asked to do in his role as the boss of SunCentral. By Richard O’Leary HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE GIVEN THE RESPONSIBILITY TO BUILD THE NEW MAROOCHYDORE CITY CENTRE? It’s an incredible honour and privilege to be given the opportunity to work with a group of local designers and engineers, landscape architects, urban designers, a whole range of specialists to put the building blocks in place for this most important new CBD for the whole of the Sunshine Coast. It is a very rare privilege to be involved in that – to help lead that exercise, a genuine new Central Business District, a new city centre for the Sunshine Coast that is a development we have not seen on the Sunshine Coast before, and it is a development that is absolutely critical to the future of the Coast. It is about the recognition of the fact that if we are to be in excess of 500,000 people in 15 years, then we want places for businesses to carry out their activities to be competitive in South-East Queensland and to be competitive internationally, and that’s what this CBD project is about.

HOW DO YOU GO ABOUT MAKING A CITY? The first thing you have to have in mind is the people who will populate and use the city. That is the thing that drives everyone in the team, that drives our understanding of the street patterns that need to integrate into the balance of Maroochydore, the fact that we must knit this project in to the existing urban fabric, that is absolutely important and above all, to understand how people will move through this place, how they will conduct business, how they will engage socially. I call the streets in a city context ‘the power of the streets’. What will be the power of the streets in this new built form, and the streets, for me, are everything. Great cities are essentially comprised of great streets. And it’s the businesses and activities, civic activities, the social activities and the cultural activities that put flesh to those bones. From the sorts of paving we might use, to the lighting, the way natural light is dealt with in the design of these streets, the way vegetation plays in the public realm and most importantly how people can enjoy the place that will be their central city, their downtown.

What we hope to do is present an absolutely memorable city centre and one that all ages will enjoy and be immensely proud of as their own.

HOW DO YOU TURN THOSE STREETS INTO SPECIAL PLACES? You move away from streets that have traditionally been dominated by motor vehicles. In our case, we want these streets and the public realm to be dominated by people, by pedestrians, by cyclists, by families, by business people meeting; so the motor vehicle in that sense is a lesser factor in the way that street operates. Nevertheless, we still need to use the site in a way that solves some of the other problems that Maroochydore has, and we can do that by getting some critical through routes on the site to ease what has been a huge issue across the whole of Maroochydore. The way the future light rail services the city centre and ultimately – and we know it’s many years into the future – the site has the heavy rail connection coming in, the designated corridor coming off the motorway up through into the site, so we’ll have a major public transport terminus that’s heavy rail, light rail and/or buses. And that in itself is a huge benefit to the city in terms of accessibility and movement to and from downtown. Essentially, what drives the design is that we’re creating an urban context, not a suburban one.

IN THIS CONTEXT, WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN URBAN AND SUBURBAN? This is a city centre, both in commercial and community terms, and in development terms. Essentially what that means is significant buildings addressing the street, so no front setback; they are at the front boundary. They are buildings of significant scale of eight, 10, 15, 20, 25 storeys. That is a city centre of built form significance, and because of that, the design and configuration of the streets, the width of the streets, how those streets perform and how those buildings interact with the street will be critical. So those are the things we’ll be focusing on as we develop the designs for the city centre. It is a city centre; an urban centre not a suburban centre.

SO IT WILL FEEL LIKE A CAPITAL CITY? Well it’s certainly going to be the capital of the Sunshine Coast. It’s very important commercially. We are expecting leading businesses to locate here, and we hope to provide the commercial and urban amenity so they are attracted to this and want to be here.

What I would like is a city that the people of the Sunshine Coast feel excited to visit, that intimately understand it’s a place to do business, it’s a place to see government at work, it’s a place to see cultural attractions and activities, it’s a place to celebrate, it’s a place to protest. I very much want to see this city centre operating as great city centres do across the world, where the locals feel at home, they feel safe, they know they can transact business of any form because it’s got a range of businesses operating, there’s professional and technical services being operated in the city centre, and that there’s cultural and other social attractions that bring them to the city centre, as well as business.

That there were signs it was turning into a 24/7 city, that young people in particular are employed here, and are enjoying working and living here. That the South-East Queensland region has a new city centre added to it and that people understand that, in both the marketplace and social circles. Most importantly, that there are thousands of people employed in this city centre and there are students being taught, and learning and experiencing a life, business and education in this place.

WHAT WOULD BE A FAILURE? A failure would be that we get a poor market response and that would be telling us is there is a concern about growth in South-East Queensland, that big capital cities are the place to do business. And that the confidence that we all have as locals in this place as a place to raise families and conduct business is not shared across the nation as we would like.

ARE THERE ANY MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT THIS PROJECT THAT CONCERN YOU? One is that Council’s playing the developer. It is not. What Council is doing is exhibiting incredible leadership by positioning this site and the region to manage the impacts of growth for future generations. We do not have a city heart on the Sunshine Coast and for a region of some 300,000, that is not a good outcome. Council has purely and simply intervened here, acquired this land, developed a delivery model which is SunCentral Maroochydore. It has said to its skills based board, with its resources, to deliver the things that the council specifies. So we are building the things that Council has specified, which are the city-making design and public realm attributes. We are not at this point playing the developer role in terms of development of lots adjacent to those great streets that we hope to develop. There is an incredible role here for the private sector and local developers and businesses on the Coast near and afar to invest in this opportunity to purchase those lots, develop the businesses, the buildings and the reputations in this place as a lifestyle region, as a place to do business. This is the opportunity council is providing. Council is not being the developer.

WHAT’S YOUR RESPONSE TO SOME PEOPLE SAYING YOUR JOB SHOULD HAVE GONE TO SOMEONE WITH A DEVELOPMENT BACKGROUND? I’ve cut my teeth professionally in city building techniques and marketing methods in the ‘80s and ‘90s in central Melbourne, where there was a long held market and government aspiration to see more central city living in the CBD. And the Postcode 3000 program I co-designed and led with a small team, essentially produced some incredible outcomes and received accolades nationally in the way it contributed to the way a city evolves and prospers. To be quite frank, I don’t have too much truck with the naysayers there. We’re building a positive team, we’re very active and positive about the outcomes, and we know as is traditional on the Coast, there are naysayers for everything. But similarly, I have worked in this community for a long time now and I’m constantly amazed by the way the silent majority pat you on the back, push you along, and say, ‘keep going John, this is going to be fantastic, let’s get going’. And I’m reminded of that almost every day with people.

AT THE END OF THIS PROJECT, HOW WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE REMEMBERED? (Laughter) That’s not something that drives me. What I am passionate about, and determined to see happen, is the people of the Sunshine Coast celebrate this CBD and what’s in it, not so much who helped get it there.

A BITTER PILL TO SWALLOW The financial collapse of the Noosa Food & Wine Festival should be a wake up call to our leaders that our hospitality industry is in trouble, writes Bill Darby.

arlier this week, it was revealed that Noosa’s International Food & Wine Festival (along with the iconic Berardo’s Restaurant) had been placed into voluntary administration. This happens when the directors of a financially troubled company appoint an external administrator. This is often the first step towards becoming insolvent. For years, Noosa socialites Jim Berardo and Greg O’Brien have been the toast of the town, riding a wave of culinary success. The duo not only delivered one of Noosa’s premier dining experiences in Berardo’s, but they leveraged that success by creating a world class festival blending celebrity

and all things fine dining. So what went so horribly wrong? Across the Sunshine Coast, restaurant owners and event promoters will be sympathising with Jim and Greg because they would all know that feeling of deep despair when the figures aren’t adding up. When the money coming in through the door just isn’t enough to meet ever-increasing costs. Believe it or not, this is happening every day, somewhere across the Sunshine Coast. It a common reality that surviving in business has become increasingly tough. In every type of enterprise there is always that balance between risk and reward. In my opinion, this very public and costly business failure is a sign that here in this country, we haven’t got that balance right. Cost burdens such as building occupancy, workplace relations and compliance charges are not sustainable when established

well-run businesses routinely collapse. In 2013, a representative delegation of the Sunshine Coast Chambers of Commerce briefed the now Federal Employment Minister, Eric Abetz and Deputy Prime Minister Warren Truss on the challenges faced by the local hospitality trade. This included a presentation by Jim Berardo that addressed the unsustainability of high penalty rates. This is a timely reminder to Senator Abetz and Mr Truss that the government’s inaction has consequences. It should also be a wake up call to the Federal Opposition that continuing to support a highly regulated and union led suite of industrial relations policies is costing people their jobs. How many more people will join the unemployment queue in Noosa after this week? Like many other regional areas throughout Australia, the Sunshine

Coast is a fragile economy based largely on hospitality, retail and other services. Our youth unemployment levels are unacceptably high and business overall confidence remains shaky. The profit margins that make a business resilient to seasonal ups and downs have been eroded away, leaving no room for the unforseen. Our politicians tell us that small business is the engine room of the economy, so one then wonders why they apply so much pressure to our entrepreneurs through regulation. Here’s a message for the pollies: If marquee events like Noosa Food & Wine Festival can’t make a buck, there’s a lot of people out there in trouble.

A WATCH TO WATCH OUT FOR The war of the smartwatch is underway and last week yet another contender entered the field. The Pebble Time is the renewed and revised gadget from the makers of Pebble – an e-paper watch that entered the market in 2012 through a Kickstarter campaign. This latest offering also debuted on Kickstarter and raised $20 million. It has been distributed to its backers with news it will be ready for pre-order to the general public by the end of June. Features that make this watch popular are a seven-day battery life, its ability to work with both android and iOS and 30-metre water resistance. There is no word on the price as yet. THE PARCEL NEST This invention is the brainchild of Australian Tony Forrest who grew tired of missing parcel deliveries at home. He hopes his invention will put an end to trips to the post office to collect packages. The Parcel Nest can receive deliveries as big as two dozen bottles of boxed wine and it is easily secured to the front fence or on a post. A recent Kickstarter campaign raised $14,000 for the project, falling short of the required $55,000. However, Forrest is continuing with the project and you can register your interest online. LATEST PODCASTS SCIENCE VS Debuting at number one on the Australian iTunes podcast chart, this new show has captured the nation’s attention. Presented by ABC radio, Science Vs is hosted by science journalist Wendy Zukerman who will spend each episode investigating the latest fad claiming to be scientific fact. THE CHOOK WHISPERER

on Lait was 14 years old when he got hooked on chooks. “I used to have a pet chook on the dairy farm,” he says. “And I went to the Ag show and the poultry ssection and thought, geez, I want to get some of these, and I did.” That was 1952. A year later, he entered his best bird in his very first poultry contest at the Nambour Fanciers Club. The experience wasn’t anything to crow about, thanks to a rather nasty judge. “He said, ‘Listen sonny, get your mum to pluck him and put some roast potatoes around him and have him for dinner next Sunday’.” But young Ron would hear none of it. He went home determined to produce a ribbon-winning rooster at what’s now known as the Sunshine Coast Agricultural Show. “And six weeks later I showed him [the same rooster] at the Ag show and here he

I handed him a photo and asked him to draw that on my Holden ute. “And of course when I sold the ute, the bloke said, ‘How am I going to get rid of that?’ “ chuckles Lait. Now, the 78 year-old Nambour stalwart has more awards for his prized poultry than he can count, including many from the Ekka. Even more impressive than his tally of prizes is his dedication to the show. Since that first win in 1953, he has only missed three shows, each time because he was judging poultry at other shows. He doesn’t judge at the local show, but he has been an integral part of it as a regular prize winner and volunteer since those early days. He started off sweeping the floors and helping out where he could before being made chief steward of the

you just don’t have these organisations. “When I first got involved, Mum and Dad bought a couple of chooks off Ron for me and [later] Ron invited me over to show me how to wash a chook and everything. “He’s somebody that a lot of people look up to in poultry… I hope to emulate him,” says Burton. Sunshine Coast Agricultural Show President and Division 5 councillor, Jenny McKay, says Lait’s extensive knowledge has helped shape council by-laws regarding the keeping of roosters and chickens, and his service to the show is an inspiration. “In a day when volunteers tend to be on the decline, then you come upon people like Ron and it’s very special. I take my hat off to him, it’s absolutely amazing,” says McKay.

And this year, despite the recent loss of his beloved wife, he’ll be at it again – plucking the best specimens from his flock of 30 chooks to clean and preen for show time. “In the old days there were a lot more entries, but the competition is still tough,” says Lait, who never names his birds. “I’m not worried, I know which one is which without having to name them. There is enough to think about getting them ready for shows. “It’s a terrific hobby… I don’t walk around the show to anything else, I am just interested in the chooks and that’s where I stay.” The Sunshine Coast Agricultural show is on June 12 to 14 at Nambour Showgrounds. It’s only seven hours from Australia, but opulent Brunei exists in a world of its own. WORDS: Judy Skatssoon

am sitting on the balcony of my hotel room in Brunei’s capital Bandar Seri Begawan watching a blazing red sky as the sun sets over the South China Sea. It’s my first time in this small, devoutly Muslim nation on the island of Borneo – land of gold-plated mosques and wooden water villages, home to the Sultan of Brunei and a nation so rich from its oil and gas resources that no one pays tax. It is only a seven-hour flight from Melbourne but Brunei is a little known and very much underrated destination for Australian travellers. Brunei is clean and virtually free of crime, with pristine rainforests, palmfringed beaches and palatial resorts. It has a population of less than 500,000 and the people I met were friendly, gentle and hospitable. But there are a couple of things we may as well get out of the way. If you want to buy alcohol, forget it. Alcohol is banned and the only way for a traveller to have a drink is to bring your own and consume it inside your hotel. Smoking is also banned in public. Then there is the matter of sharia. The strict Islamic law code – which includes flogging, stoning and

amputation – is being phased in since its introduction in 2014. And no discussion of Brunei could be complete without mentioning the playboy brother of Sultan Hassanal Bolkia, Prince Jefri. Prince Jefri has gained notoriety for his harems of beautiful women, his flotilla of luxury yachts including a boat named Tits and his alleged misappropriation of billions of dollars while he was finance minister. Royal Brunei Airlines recently resumed its service from Melbourne to Ho Chi Minh City via Brunei, making it possible to stop at Brunei either for a self-contained visit or on the way to or from Vietnam. I arrive in the afternoon on my way

This grand and regal complex is situated on sprawling leafy grounds with immediate access to the bath-warm waters of the South China Sea, a lagoonsized swimming pool, a cinema, three restaurants, a luxury spa and an 18-hole golf course designed by Jack Nicklaus. (Golf buffs take note: in 2011 The Empire was named Best Golf Resort in Asia Pacific by Asian Golf Monthly.) Lovers of piano will appreciate the Fazioli grand in the lobby. If that doesn’t mean anything to you, consider this: only about 100 of these are made each year and they come at a cost of up to $380,000. I could have easily spent my two days in Brunei lapping up the luxury at the Empire, but there isn’t much point in being somewhere new if you don’t get out and about to taste the local flavour. My guide Nabil meets me in the lobby for a city tour. First stop is Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque. The main dome is covered in pure gold and it’s considered one of the most beautiful mosques in the Asia Pacific. We also visit the Jame Asr Hassanali Bolkia Mosque – the largest mosque in Brunei – and the Royal Regalia Museum, which celebrates the life and successes of the sultan, and provides a welcome relief from the sweltering heat. “We only have two seasons,” Nabil tells me. “Hot and wet.” From there it’s a trip aboard a water taxi to the Water Village, or Kampong Ayer, where we stop at the home of Hijh Azizah and her family for homemade Malaysian sweets and tea. With its stilt houses and maze of rickety wooden walkways situated on the Brunei River, it’s the world’s largest water village and Nabil compares it to the Italian city of Venice. No trip to Brunei would be complete without visiting the Istana Nurul Imam, home of the sultan himself and the seat of Brunei government (effectively the sultan

and his family). We’re not allowed inside on this day but as I peer in from the gate Nabil informs me it contains 1788 rooms, a 110-car garage, a stable for the sultan’s 200 polo ponies, five swimming pools and 350 toilets. A colleague who spent several years as a reporter in Jakarta rather unkindly described Brunei as the most boring place on earth, but I’d have to beg to differ. ustralia’s Reserve Bank cut the cash rate in May for the second time this year. A few days later, it trimmed growth projections in its quarterly statement. The unexpected removal of an easing bias produced a bounce in the Australian dollar, despite the need for further currency depreciation. While the removal of the easing bias was unforeseen, it remains consistent with the structural nature of this easing cycle. The RBA hopes that improving household demand will be enough to generate the long-awaited lift in nonmining investment, and that a move by the US Federal Reserve to lift its cash rate in the second half of this year will be

enough to drive the US dollar higher. Easy money produced by central banks responding to weak economic growth has been the major driver of investment market performance for some years now. This meant that holding an increased weighting in shares has been a rewarding strategy. But this asset reflation theme appears to running out of road, thanks to a couple of factors: valuations and the weakening supply side of the global economy. From a value perspective, assets have gained in price as weaker growth – brought on by higher savings rates and reduced borrowing – spurred central banks into action, using a variety of tools from low-to-zero cash rates to quantitative easing. Falling cash yields have led to higher asset prices, including share market rallies. But price gains from falling yields alone are not sustainable, which means expected returns should be lower from here.

A collapse in productivity growth also inhibits economic growth. More broadly, without signs of healthier profit growth, it is difficult to see the Australian equities market staging a strong short-term performance from this point. With the annual season kicking off on Sunday, Coast residents have the perfect opportunity to witness this spectacular sight. Whale One’s Lisa Lawer says whale watching is an incredible “bucket list item.” “It evokes a lot of emotion in people and it’s pretty awesome seeing them in the wild. “Everyone has to do it once in their lifetime.’’ The Whale One tours are three to four hours in duration and the best viewing is 10 to 12 nautical miles off shore, an area known as the whale highway. The season is expected to go through until November. “The whales start up around Port Macquarie and as the southern oceans cool they come towards warmer waters,’’ Lawer says. “They go to the Whitsunday islands for breeding. ’ve got to tell you it’s been one of those crazy weeks where I’ve received nothing but negative news. I just turned 40 and my best mate Troy said, “Congrats big fella, enjoy your first colonoscopy”. Yep, thanks for that buddy. As an aside, I’m currently on the search for a doctor with slim fingers. But when you think about it, 40 isn’t that old – if you’re a tree. I’ve come to the realisation that the first 40 years of childhood are the hardest. Worse than that, everyone has wished me well then in the same breath muttered, “Woah ho, 40, look out, it’s all downhill from here!” But isn’t that a good thing? To me, that phrase says, “Hey you’ve done the hard yards getting up the four decade-long hill, now kick back, relax and bomb the next 40 you sexy piece of 40 year-old man candy!” Sorry those last few words were pure fantasy. If I had a best before date, this fella is now well and truly in the discount bin along with the new Cadbury Vegemite chocky and Mick Malthouse’s 2015 Carlton members carpark pass. Just two days ago, I noticed my hair is turning grey. From the side of my scone to the salt and pepper chest hair, to the area surrounding my willy pillows, it’s all changing and at an alarming rate. What used to be ginger is 50 shades of grey. In the old days, if I stood naked in the bathroom I’d look down and see Prince Harry staring up at me. Now I cast a glance south and I find it’s more Prince Phillip. As I mentioned, it’s been a hell of a

week and I can’t wait to get home and pour myself some dinner. And what a dinner it’ll be, with the refreshingly thirst quenching Matilda Bay Beez Neez. This old chestnut was originally created as a Christmas gift from the bosses at Capilano honey to their staff. The brewers combined a traditional handcrafted wheat beer with pure light amber honey and in doing so, gave birth to what is now a Matilda Bay stalwart. It pours absolutely golden with a taste bigger than Gus Gould’s head. Although not a serious session beer, the BN is a rewarding friend you can call on at any time of the day or night, not just at breakfast time. Clean, dry and non offensive, Beez is the Hamish Blake of beers – it appeals to everyone. I give the Matilda Bay Beez Neez a solid four out of five thumbs up.

Don’t feel too sorry for Audi, though. Let’s not forget they’re part of the world’s dominant carmaker – the VW Group. And remember, too, that Audi is more than competitive – even dominant – in some market segments. Its SUVs and sporty A1 and A3 small cars have enjoyed considerable success. Its R8 and RS7 are among the finest luxury performance machines on the market. Yet the A6 still seems like the proverbial red-headed stepchild. Now in its fourth generation, the A6 has recently been facelifted with the new look arriving back in March. In many ways it gets closer to its uber-rivals than ever before – showcasing new technology, class-leading engines and sharp pricing. It does enjoy one significant advantage over its German rivals – in the Australian market at least – where it’s the only one of the ‘big three’ to offer all-wheel-drive. This makes the A6 Quattro a popular choice among safety-conscious buyers, particularly those who enjoy winters in the snow. Despite its qualities – and the consistent way this car has improved from model to model – the A6 remains unlikely

magine if you were a golfer who only ever got to compete against Rory McIlroy and Jordan Spieth. Perhaps picture yourself owning a restaurant in the same street as Gordon Ramsey and Heston Blumenthal. Or as a shopkeeper, going head-to-head with Coles and Woolies.

A tough assignment, you might think. But that’s the scenario faced by Audi’s A6 sedan each and every day. The A6 is unquestionably one of the finest cars in the world. Yet, at the same time, it’s rarely even spoken about as the best car in its own neighbourhood. Such is life as a German prestige car.

It’s a battle the A6 has fought bravely – if not quite successfully – for two decades – ever since the A6 replaced the previous Audi 100 sedan in the mid-90s. to overtake its German arch-rivals any time soon. Yet it’s difficult to see why. We drove the mid-range offering with a V6 turbo-diesel engine, seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and Quattro all-wheel-drive. It’s a handsome, assured and refined vehicle that really stands up to any comparison. Mechanically, it’s outstanding. Audi is the king of diesel technology, thanks to its heroics in the world sports car championship with its R8 TDI machines – and that expertise clearly has trickled down to its passenger models. We’ve previously tested the A6 with a twin-turbocharged variant of this same engine – a memorable machine that is the most un-diesel diesel we’ve ever driven. This more modestly-performed, single-turbo version also makes a compelling case, particularly with a price tag a smidgen below the magical $100,000 barrier. Interestingly, Audi has trimmed back the engine options on this latest A6, with one small-capacity (1.8-litre) turbocharged petrol engine in the basic model, the two V6 turbo-diesels and, at the top of the scale, a bi-turbo petrol V8 in the high-performance S6 model. Our test car, with its sensible and

frugal three-litre turbo-diesel V6 might sound pretty tame, but it warrants some attention. They call it a ‘clean diesel’ – thanks to its impressively frugal 5.1 litres per 100 kilometre thirst. Yet that green cred comes without any noticeable compromise on performance or driving enjoyment. It will reach the speed limit in a brisk 6.6 seconds and its outputs of 160 kilowatts and 500 Newton metres of torque are delivered with impeccable smoothness and quietness. The car delivers a granite-like feeling of sturdiness on the road as if it’s bolted to the asphalt regardless of speed or conditions. We’ve previously been critical of Audi’s tendency to deliver slightly vague steering but this latest A6 offers razor-sharp turn-in with ample feel and feedback to the driver. One area where Audi has clearly outshone its rivals is in the instrument panel, which in the A6 is the best we’ve seen anywhere. Drivers are presented with a vivid, easy-to-read blend of analogue dials and crisp digital display, which is a joy to use. The rest of the cockpit is restrained but classy. The MMI colour monitor takes

pride of place at the top of the centre stack and is the platform for cabin functions. We also loved Audi’s satellite navigation system, which allows you to choose a mode where the graphic street displays are overlaid on a Google Earth satellite image of the surrounding neighbourhood. So while your path is highlighted in yellow, you can actually see the buildings, parks and other features you’re driving through (albeit from space) – almost as if you were hovering above the route you’re driving. We did have a couple of bugbears with the A6. First was with the audio system – which insisted on turning down the volume – or sometimes completely changing the station – every time the car was switched off and on. Irritating. And I’m not a huge fan of the unnecessarily fiddly way Audi arranges its climate controls – push a button, then turn a knob for every function. I have to concede, though, it’s a system that doubtless becomes more intuitive with regular use. So, does the A6 finally manage to steal the limelight from its German arch-rivals? Hmmm. I hate to break the bad news. Anyone for a game of golf?

AUDI A6 3.0 TDI QUATTRO HOW BIG? A full-sized executive sedan comparable to a Mercedes E-Class or BMW 5 Series – or an Aussie Commodore. It looks even bigger on the road, and has all the interior space a family could need. HOW FAST? It’s surprisingly quick and agile, even though it’s not even the most powerful diesel offered in this model. Again, more power and performance than an average family would ever demand. HOW THIRSTY? Despite having the pulling power of a V8, it drinks like a fourcylinder hybrid, using just 5.1L/100km. That’s amazing for a car of this size and specification. HOW MUCH? Partly because of its low consumption, which helps it avoid the Luxury Tax, you can buy this A6 for just under $100-grand (before all the obligatory on-road costs).

OCEANSIDE KAWANA – KEY FACTS Oceanside Kawana is set to become a thriving destination with the health, retail, commercial, education and residential hub plus kilometres of waterfront bike paths and walkways. Here are some key facts about it:

ix months after work began on the first commercial site in the Oceanside Health Hub, an eight-storey multi-deck carpark with ground-floor retail space is being built in the allied health, commercial, aged-care, retail, accommodation and high-density residential precinct. A critical infrastructure component for the Health Hub, the 581-bay carpark will provide spaces for many of the individual developments which will be located there. Developed by Excel Development Group, the $18 million project followed an assessment that found a separate multi-level parking station in the Oceanside Health Hub would decrease the number of parking spaces required in up to six commercial buildings in the precinct. “By reducing the total number of car spaces and locating them in single off-site location, a more sustainable outcome is being achieved that will assist with future plans to encourage greater public transport dependence at Oceanside,” says Ben Simpson, Stockland regional manager for the Sunshine Coast. “This will improve urban design outcomes at the Oceanside Health Hub, which could otherwise have seen a number of commercial buildings constructed with several levels of above-ground parking.” While this type of consolidated approach to parking occurs organically in long-established CBDs, it is

understood to be the first time it has been implemented in a greenfield master-planned project of this size. Managing Director of Excel Development Group, Peter Sherrie, says Oceanside Kawana is one of the finest examples of modern master planning and successful collaboration. “Key stakeholders including Stockland and Sunshine Coast Council have played an important role,” he says. “The multi-level carpark will offer significant benefit to the community, adding to our recently completed projects within Oceanside, including The Edge commercial centre and the Saltwater/Broadwater residential apartments.” Other projects currently under construction in the Oceanside Health Hub are the $15 million Best Western Plus Oceanside Kawana motel project, which is due to be completed in November, and the $21 million Pulse Oceanside Medical complex, due to be completed in December. “The Oceanside Health Hub is a now a constantly changing landscape and there’s a real buzz of excitement as construction moves ahead,” Simpson adds. “It’s fantastic to see the huge amount of activity on the ground. • The $5 billion project encompasses about 140 hectares of land, taking in Birtinya, Bokarina Beach, the new Sunshine Coast University Private Hospital and the Sunshine Coast Public University Hospital under construction, the Oceanside Health Hub and the future town centre. • The $880 million Oceanside Health Hub will provide a wide range of allied health services, commercial space, aged-care facilities, retail outlets, cafes and hotel-style accommodation. The 17-hectare precinct is designed to suit buildings of up to eight storeys with a total of 120 metres of street-level shop frontage. Construction on the first commercial project in the Health Hub started last year and construction on the first residential component, a $36 million aged-care facility, is expected to begin this year. • St ockland’s Birtinya at Oceanside community is the primary residential precinct in Oceanside and offers a wide range of accommodation types, including house and land, townhouses and apartments. • Se veral developers have purchased medium-density development sites in Birtinya from

Stockland, with projects including Moko Living, RGD Property Group’s Island Waters, Broadwater and Saltwater apartments, and Squire Development Group’s Residence on Regatta. There is also the prestige residential project Entrance Island, with 17 waterfront allotments. • Other non-Birtinya precincts in Oceanside also have future apartment and short-term accommodation sites. • Stockland is continuing to create new lakefront and dry blocks in the Birtinya at Oceanside community, which is now almost 50 per cent completed. • A new Oceanside Kawana Sales and Information Centre opened last month, with plans for a cafe and play feature in coming months. • Other components planned for Oceanside Kawana include the Oceanside town centre with a subregional shopping centre, which is likely to feature a department store, supermarkets, specialty stores, cafes and entertainment. New community and cultural facilities are also planned. These include a major library and learning centre, a performance space, parks and other open spaces. • Research conducted by the Urbis group has found the total economic benefit of Oceanside Kawana would top $5.3 billion over the next 15 years and generate more than 45,000 direct and indirect jobs. • The new heart of Kawana will provide apartment-style living for thousands of residents, approximately 21,000 ongoing jobs and contribute $828 million annually to the economy. myweeklypreview.com.au

Devil wind is predicted on Sunday with a south wind predicted on Saturday. Maybe try Maroochydore? But Sunday is a no go. Fiji Pro is pumping waves. Looks like it will be 4 to 6 ft so nothing too epic. Hopefully some Aussies can stand up! Now there seems a lot of trash talk about the Brazilian storm. Just checked the rankings and there is no less than six Aussies in the top 10! So if Brazil is a storm with just two, the Australians must be a cyclone.

ESTUARY: Bream numbers are improving with the cooler weather, fowl gut and mullet fillet are returning better quality around islands in the main river systems of the Coast. Prawns are moving just on dark in the usual places, just watch for the cast netters in action. SURF: Whiting and dart are working holes from Maroochy Surf Life Saving Club north along all beaches with worms and pippies the best bait. Tailor sizes are improving with the cooler weather, pilchards on ganged hooks are the go for best bait. OFFSHORE: When conditions allow, the close in reefs of Murphy’s, Gneerings and Wide Caloundra are working well for snapper, and pearl perch with fish of quality size. Lots of undersized red emperor caught, but don’t be tempted to keep them. Iodine bream are being a pest. Barwon Banks is the best for bigger snapper, pearl perch and parrot, but you need to hunt for the best spots. FRESHWATER: Cooler winter weather has given Borumba a new lease of life with togas, bass and jew taken this week on both baits and lures. Somerset Dam is returning bass and yellow belly on deep diving lures. Upper reaches of all coastal rivers are seeing good catches of bass.

SKY HIGH CEO SALARIES STINK Shareholders should take a stand against unfair executive salaries, writes Richard O’Leary.

friend of mine works for Telstra and it’s been a tough 12 months. His job has been hanging in the balance as the communications giant weighs up what to do with him and his fellow workers. The company said some of their jobs would be moved to other countries – but they just didn’t know how many. He was recently told he would get to keep his job, but not before a process where he had to reapply for the position he’s worked in for many years. It’s hard to put a price on the distress that has caused him, and others like him, over the past 12 months. It’s much easier to quantify how much his boss was being paid over that period. The former head honcho of Telstra, David Thodey, earnt $12.8 million in the last financial year. That’s more than double what most people will earn in their lifetimes. If you break it down to a

standard five-day working week, it works out at about $6,153 an hour or $100 a minute. This guy goes to the toilet and he’s earnt more than most people do in a day. In a previous career, I met Thodey in a Sydney boardroom. He was engaging, smart without being too

except for the fact he was happy to collect it while those he employed were battling to save their average income jobs from being exported to countries where wages are much lower and Thodey’s income could buy decent sized towns. To be fair, Thodey is not on his own. Macquarie Group’s Chief Executive Nicholas Moore earnt $16.5 million last year and Nine Entertainment’s David Gyngell pocketed nearly $20 million. To put that in perspective, Tony Abbott earns $507,000. Whether you are a fan or not of our onion eating PM, it seems strange he earns just a small fraction of some of our business leaders. This guy is charged with running the country – but you know what his constituency would do if he started to ask for similar sums.
