For many it will be a chance to get away from the hustle and bustle of Brisbane, and some will love the place so much they may well decide to move here. Well, they’d better be quick. This week’s cover story shows the real estate market has started to emerge from its post-GFC slumber, and the recovery is underway. Firstly, have the belief that you can do it. My mum was a single mum and she impressed on us we could do whatever we wanted to do if we put the work in. Secondly, keep studying and learning. Can you nominate a day in your life that turned out to be a turning point?

The day I moved to America in 2000; it was the start of life part two. I was a successful speaker here but then my ex-business partner and best friend took me to the cleaners. A couple of opportunities came up in the States so I moved there. I didn’t know anybody when I arrived. It was a good exercise in resilience because I just landed there; I didn’t even know how to make a phone call. I ended up living in Dallas with a wonderful family and they owned a speaker’s bureau. I was incredibly blessed. I had to be very careful on stage over there, especially with my humour. I couldn’t say ‘life sucks’, I had to say, ‘life’s a Hoover’. Generally speaking, they’re a wonderful genre of audience, it just takes them a bit longer to warm up.

Q. First car? A. Mazda 1300, which I loved. Q. Favourite book? A. Winne the Pooh Heffalump when I was little – too many to list as an adult.

THE RECOVERY WE HAD TO HAVE Residential real estate sales are up, interest rates are at rock bottom and our region’s economic future looks bright, so it’s a perfect time to purchase a little piece of Sunshine Coast paradise.

he first eight years of this century the real estate market on the Sunshine Coast was like a river after rainfall; there was a steady flow of sales, and prices continued to rise, sometimes so fast it looked like the banks may overflow. But when the Global Financial Crisis hit it was like a dam wall had been put up overnight. The number of sales slowed to a trickle and prices slumped so quickly they’d soon hit the river bed. How times have changed. The Sunshine Coast chair of the Real Estate Institute of Queensland (REIQ) Amber Werchon says the recovery is real and has started to gain momentum. “The Sunshine Coast residential real estate continues to gather strength, with a rebounding economy fuelling confidence in the local property market. The Sunshine Coast recorded an impressive double digit increase in house sales in the three months to December, with local agents reporting this momentum has already carried over into 2015. “The latest REIQ stats show that residential real estate sales in Queensland have hit a five-year high. The latest figures reveal that Queensland recorded $51 billion worth of residential real estate transactions in 2014, the highest level since 2010.” Werchon says it’s a positive time to be in real estate on the Sunshine Coast and she puts it down to the resurgence of the regional economy – and expects the market to keep growing. “The regional economy is starting to fire on all cylinders thanks to major 14 My Weekly Preview | April 2, 2015

infrastructure projects such as the new Sunshine Coast University Hospital and Maroochydore CBD project. The area seems destined for further population growth and consequent demand for real estate. This combined with the current low interest rates is the driving factor behind the current recovery. “The upward growth trend [in real estate] has been at sustainable levels and development is continuing on the Coast specifically, plus interest rates will remain low, so this should continue.”

THE ANALYST

Real estate analyst Michael Matusik says the Sunshine Coast is now in the recovery phase which means while property prices are relatively flat, the volume of sales is increasing, rents are rising, new housing is growing and supply is tight.

MATUSIK’S TOP TEN THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE INVESTING ON THE SUNSHINE COAST 1. Sales volumes are expected to accelerate throughout the year. There were 16,000 residential sales on the Sunshine Coast last year. 2. End values are just starting to rise. This typifies a market in the recovery phase of the property cycle. Prices should lift this year. 3. The average house on the Sunshine Coast costs $480,000. Vacant land averages $250,000 per allotment and resale apartments average $350,000. 4. Weekly rents have risen consistently for detached houses and rapidly for apartments. That trend will continue. 5. The vacancy rate is tight with about 7,000 properties listed for sale. 6. Lots of jobs are being created with an extra 10,700 new jobs added in 2015. The local unemployment rate is steady at about seven per cent. 7. The top employment growth industries on the Sunshine Coast are health care and social services, retail, education, tourism and admin. 8. About 330,000 people live on the Sunshine Coast. The current growth is an extra 6,000 residents a year, that’s expected to rise to 8,000 in the next couple of years. 9. Household incomes are statistically lower – but a high proportion of residents are retirees. 10. Priority for the Sunshine Coast to meet real estate needs are more townhouses, small lot homes, and infill apartments.

Loren Wimhurst Wimhurst says the time to buy is now. “I just don’t think you could go wrong whether you are buying an acreage or waterfront or beachfront. I think it just comes down to what you can afford.” “Up to $650,000 is just motoring, and we’re selling a lot of the multimillion stuff because buyers recognise it’s as low as it’s ever going to go. “A lot of locals are using the breather in the market (post GFC) to step up a cog to the property above them. So they are going from canal to river, from no view to a view, from a smaller house to a bigger home, because they realise the gap between the two has probably never been closer. “The stock is tight, we do have very limited real estate here on the Coast at the moment, there’s not a lot of it. “Some people will wait until they think it is a better time to buy, but why would you wait? Get what you want. I mean interest rates, how much lower can they go? “I think people should jump in and lock-in, at least you know what is happening now, we know the interest rates are at the level they’re at, lock-in or you could miss out if you wait 12 months. “When you purchase property you should always do it with a long-term view, it should always be a five- to 10-year decision. I just don’t think there’s been a better time. The prices are great. I just think it’s really good value at the moment.” myweeklypreview.com.au

Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson says there are many reasons for people to be confident about the region’s economic future, which provides the impetus for a buoyant real estate industry. These are his top five.

YOUI Securing the global headquarters of a major financial services company such as Youi is a major coup for our Sunshine Coast. Youi will build an $80 to $100 million state-of-the-art facility at Sippy Downs. This is the largest non-government related investment in the Coast’s history and one of, and if not the, largest in regional Australia. The economic benefit from the project construction alone is expected to contribute more than $200 million into the economy and contribute to the creation of an additional 700 jobs. The purpose-built facilities at Sippy Downs will allow Youi to expand now and into the future and its decision to be based here, ahead of other potential homes overseas, is proof Sunshine Coast Council has what it takes to attract major investment to the region.

Maroochydore is about to start. Maroochydore City Centre will be developed on the current Horton Park Golf Course site, and is undoubtedly one of the region’s largest gamechanging developments. Over time, the new city centre’s 53 hectares will be home to entertainment, exhibition and convention facilities, community facilities and meeting spaces, parklands, walkways, recreation areas and waterways. It will become a contemporary international city – but with a character that embraces the values we all love about the Sunshine Coast. We are all fortunate to be part of this project from the very start, to see it rise from the ground in the coming years.

SUNSHINE COAST PUBLIC UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL With its nine giant cranes visible for kilometres, the $1.8 billion Sunshine Coast Public University Hospital is Australia’s first new, not replacement, hospital development for more than 20 years. When it opens in late 2016, the hospital will revolutionise healthcare on the Coast and offer a range of new and expanded free public hospital services. The hospital alone will provide employment for more than 3500 staff in its first year and this will increase to about 6000 staff by 2021. This will include doctors, nurses and allied health professionals, administrative and operational staff.

AIRPORT EXPANSION Our Sunshine Coast Airport extension project is expected to be completed by 2020, subject to obtaining all the necessary approvals and funding, and will cater for larger, more fuel efficient aircraft than those that use the airport at the moment. This project will be a huge boost to our tourism and international trade potential, especially for our export businesses in the agricultural sector, enabling them to get their products and services to markets faster and more efficiently. The expanded Sunshine Coast Airport will contribute $4.1 billion to the value of the Coast’s economy between 2020 and 2040 and generate more than 2230 jobs. Amber Werchon

SEKISUI’S BALL BACK IN COUNCIL’S COURT

he developer of a controversial tourism resort at Yaroomba has presented Sunshine Coast Council with a revised proposal for its 20-hectare site. Some building heights have been lowered, including the removal of three of the five 10-storey buildings (39 metres), although the proposal still doesn’t meet the existing planning scheme. The original concept included 10 buildings between seven to nine storeys;

the amended version has nine buildings between seven to eight storeys, with no nine storey buildings. Sekisui House senior development manager, Evan Aldridge says the removal of all the tallest buildings would compromise the commercial viability of the project. “The need for the hotel precinct to be 10 storeys is based on substantial feedback from major international hotel operators to ensure the ongoing viability

of a five-star international hotel.” Under the revised plan there will be 1350 apartments, which is 120 less than originally put forward. Aldridge says the building footprint will remain under 20 per cent of the site, with the remaining 80 per cent to be open space, including a three-hectare park. “Our updated proposal represents a balance between the needs of residents, business groups, community feedback, Council’s objectives, and Sekisui House as site owners.” Sekisui House wants the Sunshine Coast Council to review the revised proposal and consider amending the region’s planning scheme. “It’s important the community knows that this is only the first, in a number of steps, before we are able to submit a development application,” Eldridge says. He says the changes are the results of months of public consultation, including a survey which found an even split between people who opposed, supported or were neutral about the development. A survey commissioned by a residents group before the original concept plans were released found nearly half of people polled opposed the development.

The Sunshine Coast Council is holding a special meeting later this month to consider changes to the planning scheme.

Take the family to a destination where the meals are bland, the showers are cold and every mountain vista is food for the soul. WORDS: Malcolm Foster

awn’s golden light catches the tops of the snow-capped Himalayas and gradually creeps downward as the rising sun lights up a sweeping arc of soaring peaks, at once forbidding and starkly beautiful. The stunning vista from the top of Poon Hill – at 3,193 metres, the highest point of our family’s six-day trek in Nepal – was among many highlights of a Lord of the Rings-like adventure through lush forests, terraced fields and traditional villages nestled above plunging valleys. Sometimes the going was tough – like hiking two hours up steep, stone steps. Other times, we walked along gently undulating woodland paths. Along the way, there were rewards: children who ran to greet us (sometimes asking for money or lollies), wildflowers beside the path, breathtaking views and cups of hot masala tea at cute little rest stops. If you’re looking for a family adventure that immerses you in nature, beauty and a fascinating culture – and you’re willing to rough it – consider trekking in Nepal. Our two boys, 12 and 10, loved the experience. One of my older son’s favourite parts was the camaraderie with other trekkers from around the world in common rooms at the tea houses. Children as young as eight could handle the popular 65-kilometre Ghandruk-Ghorepani-Poon Hill loop we hiked, located just south of the Annapurna Range, while small children can be carried on the backs of porters.

We hiked four to six hours daily, depending on the trail’s difficulty, usually reaching our destination by 3pm, allowing time to relax before dinner. With good weather, this route will give you stunning views of a string of mountains. The circuit starts and ends near the lakeside town of Pokhara, central Nepal’s trekking hub. We used 3 Sisters Adventure Trekking, which specialises in training and employing women, to hire our guide, Mana Kunwar, an experienced, flexible and fun Nepali woman who spoke good English. Her knowledge of the trail, culture and language – and contacts at tea houses where she booked our rooms – enhanced our experience immensely. We also hired a male porter to carry one backpack while I carried another. My wife and kids hiked with smaller knapsacks. Hiring guides is not only a way to get to know locals, it also offers them a valuable source of income. Peak trekking season is in October and November, when skies are clearest and temperatures hover between 15 to 25 degrees Celsius. We mostly hiked in T-shirts and shorts but we needed fleeces and long pants for cold mornings and evenings. April and May, also a good time to go, can be cloudier, but the rhododendron trees are in bloom. June, July and August are rainy. Be prepared to rough it. Some teahouses offer hot

showers but water supplies are often limited. Rooms are $US3 to $US5 ($4-$6) a night and are spartan, but clean. Blankets are available, but most trekkers bring sleeping bags, which can be rented or bought in Pokhara or Kathmandu at shops that sell everything you need, including knock-off brand fleeces and backpacks. Trekking poles are recommended, especially when descending. Don’t buy hiking shoes when you arrive; break those in at home. The food is rather monotonous: lots of dal bhat, or lentil stew with rice, plus curries, pastas and soups, and not much meat or fruit. Deep-fried gurung bread is quite good. You may want to bring canned tuna or meat. As for that sun rise from Poon Hill, we woke at 5am and hiked 45 minutes from the village of Ghorepani to see it, and shared the experience with 300 to 400 other trekkers. But like the rest of the trip, the effort was well worth it. We got a panoramic view of both the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges in all their majesty.

MUM’S THE WORD FOR LOCAL SURF STAR Today, Serena Brooke is happiest surfing the waves of parenthood. WORDS: Tamara Simoneau

housands will head to Moffat Beach for the annual Pa and Ma Bendall Classic over the Easter weekend, held in their honour every year since 1974. With Pa and Ma Bendall’s status as Coast surfing icons, winning it is a rite of passage for up and coming surfers. In the early ‘90s, it was a teenage Serena Brooke who stood on the podium as one of the winners at the end of the event. And later, it was Ma Bendall who would give Serena a grant to help launch her surfing career. “She was a really sweet lady, we had a cup of tea and she talked about old surfing stories, and basically told me to follow my dreams,” says Serena. In the years that followed, the Caloundra teenager became the most successful female surfer the Sunshine Coast has ever produced. She was a regular on the World Championship Tour for 14 years with her rivals and good mates Layne Beachley and Lisa Andersen. Twice she has finished the season as the runnerup World Champ, and she’s featured in surf videos, magazines, movies and advertising campaigns. But these days you won’t find her jet-setting between perfect breaks on one side of the Pacific to the other. You’ll find her at home in Noosa, chasing her spirited twin girls from one side of her leafy property to the other. “It’s so different,” says Brooke. “It is nice to not be on planes all the time and have a bit of structure and not be in different time zones all the time. Having

a family and having a place where you’re settled, I love all that.” It’s quite the seachange. But it’s one she was more than ready to make shortly after she met her partner Emma Sheldrake five years ago. Emma’s colourful portraits. After some initial emails, it was another eight months before they met. “We had an instant connection,” says Serena. Serena spent her early years in Mapleton with her mum and five sisters. When they moved to a house right on Shelley Beach in Caloundra when she was 14, Serena’s trajectory on the surfing scene was almost instantaneous. She picked up a board, taught herself how to surf and within 18 months was sponsored by Beach Beat and was dominating school surfing contests around the country. By 1995 she was professional. “I did my time. I travelled non-stop for 14 years, and then travelled another five years doing shoots and events for my sponsor, Bud Light.” These days surfing is purely for pleasure, but she surfed professionally as long as she possibly could. Her last contest was in California when she was 12 weeks pregnant with the twins. “I had the craziest morning sickness ever and was trying to hide it from everyone.” Serena and Emma’s twins are now two, and as any parent knows, that’s a whole lot of busy. Luckily, this family of four thrives on being busy, but when Serena needs a little ‘mummy break’, you can guess where you’ll find her. “I go surfing to refresh and get some sanity back,” she says with a laugh. Parents of toddlers will know exactly where she is coming from.

n recent weeks I have confessed to you to being just about the worst driver on the Sunshine Coast. Who said back in high school that I would never excel at anything in life? Well this week, I have a little update to my driving dramas. My husband is trying to bribe me to not have an accident. Yes, it is true. He figures it is cheaper to buy me something pretty than take out shares at the panel beater. It is strange logic but you see, he is dangling the carrot of diamond earrings as a reward if I can drive until Christmas without having an accident. That means not a single dent, bash, scrape, nick, scuff, or scratch on my car because in theory, I will be trying harder to not reverse into wheelie bins. At first I was a little insulted at his blatant bribery. It is a form of incentification. It is the same as the star chart many of us use to toilet train our kids. Except I am not a two year-old toddler. And no woman wants their husband treating them like a petulant child. What a ridiculous and insulting proposition from my husband. So of course I accepted. You know why? Because I am a greedy little

shopaholic. I blame a modest childhood, but I am actually plain greedy when it comes to collecting pretty stuff. My black cold heart did beat a little faster every time I fantasised about dripping in those diamond earrings. I was day dreaming about diamond porn. I have long fancied my ear lobes frosted in diamonds ever since watching Dynasty on TV when I was 10 years old. Joan Collins was intoxicating with her big hair, big shoulder pads and big diamond earrings. I badly want that bling. And I wanted my husband to be a little humbled, because he thinks I have no chance of driving responsibly until December. So I accepted his challenge. Then three days after making the bet I reversed into a ute. My hopes and dreams for elegant earlobes were smashed along with my tail lights. I got out of the car and purveyed the damage and stamped my foot. In exactly the same way as a petulant child who was sent to her room with no toys.

BEHIND THE BHP DEMERGER Anthony Ward is from Ord Minnett in Buderim

HP Billiton shareholders will shortly be voting on the proposed demerger of the new South32. The move was first signalled in 2014 and looks likely to proceed this year. We have made the following key observations. Firstly, cost savings appear to be a key driver of value creation. Secondly, South32’s low gearing should allow for growth options and lastly, South32 could begin trading as early as May 18. The streamlined BHP business after the split is expected to generate pre-tax savings of about US$100 million ($128 million) per annum, with 90 per cent of this achieved by the end of 2017. Offsetting this is US$738 million in one-off costs associated with the split. In the same vein, South32 will incur an extra US$60 million per annum of costs as a standalone entity with management confident its application of a regional business model will deliver savings over and above this figure. Ord Minnett see investors interested in South32 (so-named for the 32nd parallel south which links the company’s two main centres – Johannesburg and Perth) for its commodity exposures position in the cycle, combined with its low gearing and liquid scale. The firm, however, believes the exclusion of the stock from FTSE indices could somewhat dampen UK investor interest. South32’s pro forma balance sheet has net debt of US$674 million, representing gearing of five per cent on net assets of US$13 billion. The company will also have access to

a US$1.5 billion revolving syndicated bank facility. This relatively low gearing level and available liquidity should give South32 the means to pursue growth options. South32 intends to distribute 40 per cent of underlying earnings as dividends from the first half of fiscal year 2016, which management believes is a better-suited payout policy than a progressive dividend policy as per BHP, given the quality and variability in the cash flow of South32’s underlying assets. The shareholder vote is scheduled for May 6. If approved, BHP shareholders will receive one South32 share for every BHP share they own by way of an in-specie dividend. Trading is expected to start on the ASX by May 18 on a deferred settlement basis.

Recipe supplied by Point Cartwright Seafoods 3 whole fresh crabs 4 red chillies 3 cloves of garlic Small knob ginger 1 egg 2 tsp cornflour 1 tbs tomato sauce 1 tsp sugar 1 tsp vinegar 1 tbs peanut oil Half cup chicken stock Salt to taste

Method Clean the crabs, discarding any grey or pulpy matter. Cut crab, including shell, into small pieces. Heat oil in pan and fry one chopped clove of garlic with the crab for a couple of minutes. Add chicken stock, cover pan and simmer until crab is cooked (about 12 to 15 minutes). Pound the chillies, two cloves of garlic and ginger until fine. Add this, together with remaining ingredients, to the crab. Stir until sauce thickens and serve garnished with lettuce.

EUROPEAN CLASS, KOREAN SMARTS This week Peter Atkinson from AAP reviews the HYUNDAI GENESIS.

o matter how high you’ve climbed, or how quickly you’ve made the ascent, it never pays to get above your station. Ask American rap singer Kanye West, who recently got caught out namedropping with his claims that US

President Barack Obama regularly phones him for a chat. In case you missed the story, Kanye says: the Prez often calls me at home. The commander in chief suggested otherwise. Like Kanye, Korean car company Hyundai has come a long way in a relatively short space of time. And like

Kim Kardashian’s other half, Hyundai has started dropping a few impressive names into the conversation of late. In promoting its new flagship sedan, the Genesis, Hyundai has suggested it can match the world’s big-name prestige and luxury car brands at a fraction of the price.

It names BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Lexus and Jaguar as benchmarks for the new model. All well and good. There’s no question the Genesis draws Hyundai much closer to the hallowed ground occupied by the European super-brands along with their aspiring Japanese competitors. But in comparing the Genesis to European models costing at least twice as much, Hyundai is asking for trouble. The Genesis is a good car. And for the price it’s an astonishingly good one. But let’s not get carried away just yet. Sensibly, Hyundai also talks about premium design, benchmark safety features and putting luxury within reach of more Australians. The Genesis certainly does that. With a starting price of just $60,000, it offers a handsome, luxurious driving experience, long list of technology features and impressive refinement from a brand that, just a few years ago, still wore the cheap and cheerful tag. Like Kanye, this ambitious company has made incredible strides and is now a genuine player on the world stage. Hyundai would love this car to be compared to the European executive saloons that dominate the $100,000-plus

market – Benz’s iconic E-Class, the BMW 5-Series, Audi’s A6 and the Jaguar XF. But be careful what you wish for. Let’s be honest. Very few people tossing up between a Benz and a Beemer are going to be tempted by a Hyundai, no matter how good. That kind of badge snobbery takes decades to overcome – just ask Lexus. Perhaps it’s Lexus and fellow Japanese premium marque Infiniti who should be more afraid of the Genesis. Although it doesn’t quite match those plush standards, it is certainly an attractive option for those not obsessed with European lineage. From certain angles it looks a lot like a BMW 5-Series or 7-Series. One friend even suggested the front-end has a bit of Aston Martin about it, although I’m not so sure. That might have something to do with the winged badge adorning the bonnet. Aston Martin and Chrysler might also be flattered (or irritated) by the similarity to its winged crest. That Genesis emblem, by the way, does its best to mask the car’s true origins. The only recognition of its Hyundai heritage is the badge on the boot;

otherwise the parent company is all but ignored. When directly compared to the Europeans, its cabin feels a little last year. It’s well made, well finished and highly specified but reminded us of a previous-model Benz or BMW. What’s beyond doubt is that sitting in the Genesis, riding in it and putting

It has achieved a record high score in Australia’s ANCAP safety testing thanks to nine airbags, robust build and a welter of electronic safety aids. braking, radar cruise control, lane departure warning, parking assist system with rear-view camera, 9.2-inch colour screen with satellite navigation, power seats with leather trim, dual-zone climate control, automatic wipers, headlights and high-beam dimming and high-end audio. Phew. Spend another $11-grand on the sensory pack and you can add head-up display, blind-spot and cross-traffic alerts, lane-change assist, around-view monitor, premium leather, memory seats and self-dimming mirrors. The flagship Ultimate model ($82,000 plus onroads) further adds glass roof, power closing doors and boot lid, ventilated front seats and heated rear seats, larger alloy wheels and privacy screens. Impressive stuff. The Genesis is big and imposing, feels quiet and sturdy on the road and is propelled by a smooth, quiet 3.8-litre V6 engine through a seamless eight-speed automatic transmission. For the price, it represents fabulous value. In time, those European brands will be even closer within reach. But we shouldn’t expect to see Kanye West driving one any time soon. Or his buddy Barack Obama, for that matter.

HYUNDAI GENESIS

How big? It’s a full-sized sedan with wheelbase comparable to a Holden Caprice. Interior space is vast, the boot even more so. How fast? It will reach the speed limit in 6.5 seconds; not supercar quick but impressive for a big, plush car like this one. And with 232kW and almost 400Nm, there’s plenty of grunt for overtaking. How thirsty? Official combined figure is 11.2L/100km, not great. What’s to like? Fabulous equipment and quality for the price and the five-year warranty is also impressive. How much? From $60,000 plus onroad costs for the basic model; if you want all the fruit you’ll pay about $20k more.

he last full-length waterfront development site fronting the Maroochy River in the Duporth Avenue precinct of central Maroochydore has been sold for an undisclosed sum in conjunction between Savills and G1 Property Mooloolaba. The 10 Duporth Avenue property is set on a 2064 square metres, including a huge 23.2 metres of direct river frontage. It currently comprises a three-level riverfront unit block, developed in the 1960s, as well as single-level retail shops fronting Duporth Avenue. The riverfront site was sold to an undisclosed UK-based buyer, for an undisclosed sum, who was introduced to the property by G1 Property Mooloolaba’s owner Simon Guilfoyle and Terri Liddell.

SURF REPORT

Two things are worth exploring this weekend. One is the Bells Beach Rip Curl Pro, although the surf is predicted to be small which suits those Brazilians who weigh nothing! The other is the gang at Beach Beat are knocking 50 per cent off a lot of stuff. It’s time to start thinking about heading to Indonesia to chase some swell. Don’t wait until you are too old or you’ll be the wealthy guy in the grave yard with no epic memories! …just sayin! Locally, it’s a good time for a round of golf.

FISHING REPORT

ESTUARY: Whiting and bream are providing lots of fun for all the family. Catch and release is a great lesson for the kids especially around Cotton Tree and Picnic Point. Jew are in the cod hole and motorway bridge area with deeper holes producing bigger f sh at night. Mud crab and f athead are in gutters around Bli Bli. SURF: You’ll f nd tailor at Pincushion just after dark with some f sh around 2 kilos, with pillies proving the best baits. Jew have been taken from Mudjimba to Kawana and pillies are the best bait there as well. Whiting and dart are in the low tide gutters along Maroochy Beach using worms and pippies. OFFSHORE: It’s a fairly mixed bag at present with the close-in reefs of Murphy’s, Gneerings and Coolum f ring most days - sweetlip, parrot and coral trout are worth the effort. Barwon Banks is also returning a good feed of mixed reef f sh, with dawn and dusk seeming to be the best times. You’ll get spanner crabs east of Murphy’s Reef. FRESHWATER: There have been good reports of bass and golden perch from Red Rock to The Spit at Somerset, with most f sh taken on lures. The upper reaches of the Noosa River from Harry Spring Hut to No. 13 camp are returning bass on lures cast at almost any snags. Lake Baroon is returning bass and spangled perch just out from both ramps using bibless crank baits.

turned 43 this week and I’m proud to say I’m still active enough to sustain a football injury. When I say football, I mean soccer, and I wasn’t actually playing, I was practising a drill designed for five year-olds. You see, I’ve become coach. The great thing about being a coach is you don’t have to be skilful, smart or fast – in fact, it was my slowness off the mark which secured me the role. When they asked for a volunteer, everyone else took a step back really quickly. That was not my only problem. My last game of soccer was as a 14 year-old – and I was a goalkeeper, so I had absolutely no idea how to train these young boys and girls. My overactive imagination quickly fast-forwarded to me playing in a proper team on weekends, enjoying the camaraderie of my fellow players and maybe, just maybe, being head-hunted by a Brisbane Roar talent scout. It was at that moment I felt a sharp pain in my leg like somebody had stabbed me. I quickly scanned my fellow trainee coaches in case one of them had randomly attacked me. But nobody was within cooee. I crumpled to the turf, fantasy shattered, calf muscle torn. There was only one thing to do – I said I had to go (an hour earlier than scheduled) and hobbled off to my car at the far end of the field, clutching the red folder of soccer drills firmly under my arm, feeling every day of my 43 years.
