We bought a house at the end of 2003 when I was a national coach. We spent the summers here and lived overseas in cycling season. My wife grew up here and I grew up in Canberra. My wife loves the humidity but I don’t – I only put up with it because the Sunshine Coast is so nice.
Q. Why do you live here? A. The Sunshine Coast has got the best of both worlds. It’s not too big and not too small, it’s got the beach, it’s got the hinterland. It’s got that relaxed country feel and the community is really great. We’ve got some great cycling areas. I ride two or three days a week. We go through Mudjimba, along David Low Way or Kawana Way, and every now and again we venture up the range.
Q. What is your favourite place on the Sunshine Coast?
A. Cotton Tree. We’ve got one of the best

views in the world. I’m hoping to get back into surfing once the boys are bigger.

A. There’s a number of areas, from Point Cartwright around the headland, and up on the range around Montville is quite nice. At Maroochydore you’ve got the beach and the river; it’s a bonus having the river if the swell is too big.
used to have the Cycling Australia club championships here and a lot of my friends said, ‘geez the drivers are aggressive up here’. You don’t hear that so much anymore. training in Germany in 2005). That was obviously quite a big turning point not only for me but a lot of people. I think it just makes you appreciate life and how fragile it can be. You wake up – it’s great to be alive. I had kids after that and you just appreciate life. I think people went, ‘geez, Warren’s changed a bit’. I go yeah, I don’t push people to achieve… because I still coach. If you want to achieve, if you want to do it that’s great. I look at the bigger picture; it’s not all about sports and being very successful in life. The best thing is my kids and family. I’ve had job offers to go to America and around Australia but I’ve chosen to live here on the Coast because that’s what I want to do. I could be more successful if I went but that’s not what I wanted to do. I’m training a few Sunny Coast athletes who are becoming high profile – Daniel Fitter, Ryan Cavanagh and Kristina Clonan. I’m on a small stipend to be a development coach for the region.
Q. When are you happiest? A. With family and friends at Cotton Tree. The water is very soothing.
Q. What frustrates you the most? A. Bad coffee. Q. If you could tell your 18 year-old self anything, what would it be?

SWEET SURRENDER We are a nation of sugar addicts, but what’s so bad about that? WORDS: Richard O’Leary
Actor and director Damon Gameau got stuck into the sweet stuff for his documentary That Sugar Film
P
icture this, if you will. You go into your local supermarket and head straight to the baking aisle. You take six one-kilogram bags of sugar from the shelf and put them into your trolley and then go to the checkout and pay and take them home. Over the next week your family eats all that sugar so you go back to the shops and do the same thing. You do this week after week. It’s difficult to imagine isn’t it? Yet that is exactly what the average Australian family is doing, except all that sugar is hidden in the processed foods we buy every week, and it’s not just the usual suspects: soft drinks, chocolate and ice-cream. More than 80 per cent of the food on supermarket shelves has sugar in it: breakfast cereals, muesli bars, fruit juices, tomato sauce, BBQ sauce, pasta sauce, yoghurt, and baby food. So what? Where’s the harm? Those were the questions actor and director Damon Gameau tried to answer in a new movie called That Sugar Film, which has just been released. The human guinea pig consumed 40 teaspoons of sugar a day (the average Australian consumption according to the movie and anti-sugar crusaders) for two months to test the effects on his health. He ate only processed foods which are normally considered healthy: breakfast cereals, muesli bars, fruit smoothies and the like. He ate no lollies, soft drinks or desserts. Gameau, who didn’t usually eat added sugar (which is any sugar except what you find in dairy or whole fruit and vegetables – if it’s processed into fruit

juice it becomes an added sugar), started the movie weighing 74 kilograms with a waist of 84 centimetres and a healthy liver. Just 60 days later he had put on 8.5 kilograms, added 10 centimetres to his belly and was diagnosed with fatty liver disease (joining six million other Australians). The one-man experiment reinforced the thousands of studies which have linked sugar to weight gain, type 2

The movie describes a term in the food processing industry called the ‘bliss point’ – the perfect percentage of sugar in a product to make people love the taste without pushing it so far that it’s too sweet. The movie’s ‘bliss point’ came a couple of weeks before it hit cinemas when the World Health Organisation (WHO) released its draft guidelines on sugar consumption. WHO said 12 teaspoons a day (the equivalent to a can of Coke) would be good, and six teaspoons a day would be ideal – in other
words, Australians would need to cut their sugar consumption by more than two-thirds just to get a pass mark. The release of the recommendations and the movie within weeks of each other has created a less than sweet debate about sugar in our diets. When you examine the arguments they come down to three basic positions: don’t eat any added sugar, some sugar is OK, and what problem? – it’s all a storm in a teacup.

It doesn’t supply anything of benefit to humankind and every little bit of it you consume increases your risk of a series of chronic diseases, not only wiping out our health system but destroying the quality of lives of millions of Australians.” Inconvenience is the killer, according to Gillespie. He says people should aim for no added sugar, but realistically most of us will have to make some compromises. “I made myself a general rule of thumb; if it has more than three grams of added sugar per 100 grams, put it back on the shelf. I found if I made the rule no added sugar, there would be nothing. “While you could say I’m not going to eat any processed food whatsoever, then you are going to seriously inconvenience yourself because you are going to be making everything from scratch. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with that, but you are showing a level of commitment that the vast
NO SUGAR AT ALL (NEARLY) Self-described recovering corporate lawyer David Gillespie has been advocating for people to cut out all added sugars since the 2008 release of his book Sweet Poison – why sugar makes us fat. Gillespie, who lost 40 kilograms by cutting added sugars out of his diet, argues that sugar is addictive and the leading cause of obesity in Australia and the rest of the world. “When we eat fat and protein, a hormone is released in our gut that tells us to stop eating when we’ve had enough. And when we eat carbohydrates, a different hormone is released by our pancreas to do the same thing. Except there is one carbohydrate that doesn’t trip the appetite switch control – fructose, which is one-half of sugar. Everything that contains sugar contains fructose. Our bodies do not detect fructose as food and our livers convert it immediately to fat,” Gillespie says. Gillespie argues against moderation, saying it’s a marketing term used by the

Renowned Sunshine Coast nutritionist Cyndi O’Meara says sugar has a place in our diets and that it is vital for the proper functioning of the body as it’s found in every organ of the anatomy. She says the most important issue is the quality and quantity of the sugar. “First of all they said salt was evil, then it was fat and now it’s sugar. What’s next, protein? Everyone wants a one pill wonder, there is no one pill wonder. There is nothing wrong with sugar, carbohydrates are really important…the problem is we eat too much of it and we eat the wrong type of it. We eat the refined type as opposed to the real type.” O’Meara advocates using organic myweeklypreview.com.au

maple syrup, rapadura sugar and raw honey as natural alternatives. “I think we need to be very careful that we don’t vilify sugar, and people don’t end up looking at man-made sugars or artificial sweeteners.” O’Meara is concerned about processed foods in general, not just their high sugar content. “Get back to real foods, stop buying packaged foods, buy at farmers’ markets, eat seasonally, eat locally, and start following our evolutionary roots. That doesn’t mean go off grain, or go off dairy, but have a better quality dairy, a better quality grain, have a better quality vegies, fruit, meat and nuts.” More than 80 per cent of processed foods in supermarkets contain added sugar
WHAT PROBLEM?
My Weekly Preview contacted a number of sugar industry peak bodies to ask some of the questions posed in this article but the magazine was redirected to the Australian Sugar Industry Alliance, which then passed on the request to its research arm, the Sugar Research Advisory Service (SRAS), which then provided nutritionists in its employ to field any questions. Those nutritionists have a different take on the sugar debate. They say it’s not whether there is added sugar in the processed food, but what else is in it as well. Bill Shrapnel who is a consultant to the Sugar Research Advisory Service warns against putting all processed foods into the same basket. “Sugar finds itself in all sorts of foods. Some of them, like soft drinks, are nutrient poor and there’s nothing in them except sugar and calories. So how could any nutritionist recommend them? You find added sugars in yoghurt and chocolate milk which are nutrient rich, and if you target sugar per se, you end up limiting those foods and you end up having a detrimental effect on diet.” Shrapnel also says sugar shouldn’t be singled out as the cause of Australia’s obesity epidemic. “The fundamental problem is
overeating, it’s not whether you’re having this sugar or that sugar. Don’t overeat. There is nothing inherently fattening about sugar or fat or starch or anything else, you can only put on a great amount of weight in a short period of time if you are grossly overeating.” Shrapnel disputes some of the claims

Gillespie says those figures fail the common sense test. “They are saying the total sugar consumption for the average Australian is the amount contained in a can of Coke [12 teaspoons of sugar] – that’s garbage. That doesn’t even count as logic let alone data analysis. It’s just nonsense.” Trying to establish how much added sugar we are eating is an inexact science. The Australian Bureau of Statistics stopped tracking it decades ago. That Sugar Film uses figures from the Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics and Sciences, which quantify how much sugar is produced and then divides that figure by the number of Australians, and David Gillespie uses a similar method, while Shrapnel has used the results of the National Nutrition Survey. One thing nobody seriously disputes is that the abuse of sugar can seriously harm your health. A little over a hundred years ago sugar was a relatively rare commodity which could only be bought by the very rich, which meant its capacity to harm was extremely limited. But a century later, people who don’t eat sugar are the exception to the rule, and our addiction to the sweet stuff has turned sugar into a luxury our health simply can’t afford.

n a major coup for the regional economy, Youi insurance has chosen the Sunshine Coast to become its global headquarters. The company will spend between $80 to $100 million over the next 10 years on a purpose-built facility on the corner of Sippy Downs Drive and the University Boulevard. The first phase of the project is expected to be completed by 2018, allowing Youi to double its workforce to 2000 employees – making it one of the region’s biggest employers. In wages alone, that will mean an extra $1.2 billion injected into the Sunshine Coast over the next decade – and that’s without taking into account the substantial multiplier effects to the region’s economy. The economic benefit to the construction industry alone is estimated at more than $200 million and about 700 additional construction jobs will be created.
Group CEO of Youi’s parent company OUTsurance, Howard Aron says after eight years of renting on the Coast it was time to find a permanent base. “It’s like when you are building a house, you are always in transit until you buy a home and call it home.” Youi intends to use local builders, tradespeople and developers where possible to make sure most of the money it is investing stays on the Coast. Aron says despite the company knowing there would be strong interest from other regions to host Youi’s headquarters, the long-term relationship with the council made Sunshine Coast the preferred option. “I think fundamentally it’s still better the devil you know than the one that you don’t. The relationship we built here was more than enough for us to commit and stay here.” The council also provided unspecified assistance to sweeten the deal. “There were a couple of incentives
change that decision.” Sunshine Coast Mayor Mark Jamieson has welcomed Youi as the first financial services company to establish its global headquarters on the Sunshine Coast. “This is not just creating jobs. This is about creating careers for Sunshine Coast residents in positions that traditionally pay above the regional average wage. “While people may be familiar with the Youi call centre, the global headquarters will be home to all corporate positions including IT, marketing, HR and other professionals – providing a career path for those wanting to live on the Sunshine Coast. “This is the largest non-government related investment in the Sunshine Coast’s history and one of, and if not the, largest in regional Australia.” It’s been a meteoric rise for the South
African company. In 2008 Youi established its Australian operations on the Sunshine Coast with a small building it leased, a handful of staff and zero per cent of Australia’s $25 billion insurance industry. Fast forward nearly eight years and it now employs more than a thousand staff and has about 3.5 per cent of the market. Along the way it’s had its fair share of problems; Youi is now in its third building and parking caused serious issues for the company at its existing premises in Birtinya. But Youi CEO Danie Matthee says the good has far outweighed the bad. “We’re very grateful for what the Coast has done for us, and I think this is a great opportunity for us to repay that by showing our commitment. It really has been a good journey, and I have little doubt it will continue to be a good journey.” Youi says it will now try and help attract other big businesses to the region. Construction of the new facility is expected to start in October.

with souvenir stores and popular fish and chips takeaway shops attract as many customers as the award-winning culinary establishments. The town’s population sits at around 1300 but often quadruples with the influx of tourists. We chose to visit outside of school holidays and yet the streets were still humming with activity. It’s evident that Port Douglas residents are used to sharing their home with tourists. We were greeted with smiles in the street and store owners welcomed us with open arms, taking the time to stop for a chat and offer advice on things to do and places to see. This hospitality extended to the staff at QT Port Douglas, which became our comfortable base for the week. Situated a few minutes drive from Macrossan St and beautiful Four Mile Beach, this stylish resort is described as ‘Mad Men meets the Hamptons’ with a sophisticated, upmarket vibe. QT’s marketing team isn’t too far from the mark. Think retro chic – funky furniture and bursts of colour adorn the resort, which offers a choice of studios or deluxe one- and two-bedroom villas.
Our one-bedroom villa was large enough and fitted out with vibrant décor, much of which is for sale. Yes, if you like a vase or scatter cushion then chances are, for the right price, you can take it home. It’s the small details that don’t go unnoticed, such as the pick-up sticks and card games available for purchase in each room. Even the baby’s cot came complete with a pamper pack featuring the resort’s signature Malin + Goetz botanic-based body, hair and skin treatments. If you are looking for a laidback and easy holiday, there’s no need to leave the resort, which boasts a lagoon-style pool, Estilo bar and Bazaar restaurant. But with so much on offer around Port Douglas we hired a car and set out to see the sights. It was one of Port Douglas’ most famous residents that caught the eye of our eight-month-old. Crocodiles have become somewhat of an unofficial Port Douglas mascot and given that reptilian tourism has brought millions into the local economy it’s easy to see why. The far north is renowned for its scaly residents and there is ample opportunity to jump on board one of the river charters
in search of the famous crocs. But for those not game, you can catch up with the crocs – among many other critters – at Port Douglas’ Wildlife Habitat. Located on the outskirts of town, the award-winning park sits on two hectares of land that has been recreated into a natural environment as part of its commitment to conservation. There are plenty of animals to get up close and personal with, including koalas, kangaroos, emus, wallabies, snakes, ducks and cassowaries. With the tourism season about to heat up, Port Douglas and all its tourist attractions are about to go on show. The 21st Port Douglas Carnivale will take place from May 22 to 31. A celebration of the tropical north’s best local food and wines, the 10-day event will feature the Macrossan Street Parade, Longest Lunch, Family Beach Day and Yabusame Tournament, World Racing Cooler Championships and Backyard Games, Carnivale Golf Competition, The Avenue of the Arts and Palates of Port where the region’s best chefs get together and host a degustation under the stars. DANIEL’S STORY ON THE BIG SCREEN Local film producer Rod Hopping says the Morcombe’s story has global importance. WORDS: Leigh Robshaw
S
unshine Coast film producer Rod Hopping has a big job on his hands. His Warana-based production company Heritage Films, based at Warana, has been entrusted by Bruce and Denise Morcombe to bring their incredible story to the big screen in a feature film tentatively titled, Where is Daniel? Slated for release in late 2016, it’s the biggest project of Hopping’s career. He has the task of raising the estimated $5 to $10 million budget, signing top Australian actors to play the lead roles and scouting the Sunshine Coast locations where key scenes of the movie could be filmed. Hopper approached Bruce and Denise after reading their book, Where is Daniel? “As I read the book I was literally seeing it on screen,” says Hopper. “I believe Bruce and Denise are reluctant heroes. They are living what I consider the hero’s journey.” The project has drawn some criticism from those who say a film is unnecessary or in poor taste, but the Morecombes are enthusiastic and Hopping says people who think they already know the full story are mistaken. “Being local, the story is very real to me. We’ve all lived through the headlines over 11 years, but I was taken aback by the incredible detail in the story that I don’t think anybody has seen yet. People don’t know the real story.” The Morcombe’s one fear was they didn’t want their potential involvement in the film to impact on their child safety work in schools around the country.
Peter Cousens, Bruce and Denise Morcombe, Rod Hopping “I just love that that was their response and it made me even more passionate about doing the film,” he says. “This is what makes them heroes; they’ve chosen to do the extraordinary. They are ordinary people who were thrust into the limelight. They didn’t choose it, the tragedy chose it for them and their choice is to daily do extraordinary stuff.” An initial trailer for the film has been made using the voice of a 13 year-old Gold Coast boy who plays Daniel, talking to his parents about what has happened to him. It’s a chilling couple of minutes, though the film won’t necessarily use the voice of Daniel as the narrator. “It’s our first calling card to start the process and to
share that vision of it being a dramatic feature film,” says Hopping. “We’re getting some amazing feedback. It’s hard not to be emotionally engaged with that. Who isn’t emotionally engaged with the Morcombe story? “One of the things that excites me is that a movie is a more accessible medium than a book and we have an incredible opportunity to introduce their story to a broader audience outside of Australia.” Hopping is currently in talks with scriptwriters and is seeking government and private funding. The film will be directed by Peter Cousens and filmed by cinematographer Dean Kundy, of Back to the Future, Jurassic Park and Apollo 13 fame. Cousens is committed to filming at iconic locations around the Sunshine Coast. “There’s Kiel Mountain Road overpass, there’s the Glass House Mountains, which was the place they discovered Daniel, there’s the place where Daniel’s funeral was held, his final resting place. I think it makes sense for some of these places to become characters in the story. “Our aspirations are high,” he says. “This is a good versus evil story. Evil forces were at play the day Daniel went missing and Bruce and Denise have served up sweet revenge on evil. This is a movie about hope and perseverance. I’m biased, but I believe it’s a film that has a global importance because of the sheer tenacity of Bruce and Denise. It’s a human spirit story.”

ast week my little girl had her scooter stolen from a Buddina park bordering the river while she swam a few metres away with our family friends. My four year-old came through the front doors in a flood of tears, so confused as to why anyone would take her scooter. She had clocked up hundreds of hours riding up and down our deck carrying Barbie and Peppa Pig. My little girl would just scoot up and down and up and down happily chattering to herself, lost in her own innocent little world. And what a world she lives in, as do most little people. We drink ‘rainbow tea’ for breakfast and eat ‘magic unicorn cupcakes mixed with berries from the forest fairy’ for lunch. So Scooter-gate meant so much more to us than just a rusty old toy being stolen. It was the first time we had to sit down with our child and explain there are bad people in the world. My internal thought was, thank God it was the scooter taken and not my daughter. And then thoughts of our poor Daniel Morcombe flashed through my mind. My daughter cried herself to sleep that night and I had a massive realisation that kids really do believe in all things good. When does that change? When do they stop believing in magic? And what

makes them stop? My two year-old boy wears glasses and not once has a child at day care said anything mean to his cherub face. OK, I am about to be a biased and overprotective mum with the next line, so forgive me please: those glasses are incredibly cool and I suspect will help our little man be a chick magnet when he grows up! But as a mum, I worry that the day will come where he will be called names because he is a little different. And I will not be there to protect him. The mother lion gene is strong in all of us. A friend of ours has a daughter who has a permanent limp. The mum has confided in me that she feels sick with frustration because she cannot ‘fix’ the situation. Another friend is worried about her teenage daughter being bullied at school. But deep down we all know we have to take a nervous breath and hope for good people to cross our children’s paths who will nurture them and act with grace. To quote Cinderella (it is magical you MUST see it): “Have courage, be kind”. And stop for as many cups of rainbow tea as possible.
here’s been a shift in the collective mood of the community in recent years and elected representatives who fail to respond are on notice. We’re no longer a predictable mass that will loyally vote for one side or the other with just a sliver down the middle up for grabs. The signs have been there for some time, but the recent state election result has cemented volatility as the new normal. Perhaps it’s the multitude of information platforms with the internet, blogs and social media providing an opportunity for people to air and share their grievances like never before. Perhaps it’s the 24/7 news cycle making politics and politicians more visible and virtually impossible to avoid. Or perhaps we’re just fed up with being bullied, patronised, blindsided, hoodwinked, ignored and generally played for mugs. Whatever the reason, voters are alert and it seems much of the time, we’re alarmed. Retribution for abuse of power or trust is now swift and unforgiving and governments should make no mistake about why they’ve been dumped: it’s not me, it’s you. Our new state government will need to raise the bar if it hopes to calm a cranky electorate and the numbers alone should keep them on their toes. There’s no room for complacency, blunders or nasty surprises and the Independent

Peter Wellington has already declared he won’t be a rubber stamp for the ALP and I imagine the government won’t be in any hurry to test the boundaries of his support. The precarious state of the numbers do not necessarily mean chaos and uncertainty. It wasn’t the case when former Gladstone MP Liz Cunningham backed the (then) Coalition in 1996 or when Peter Wellington supported the ALP in 1998. An evenly divided parliament might just push both sides to perform and focus on delivering for their constituents and the wider community. Their future survival depends on it: the electorate is clearly in no mood to accept anything less.

PRETTY IN PINK WALK Melinda Bingley is a self-confessed lover of all things pretty and pink. She is also a woman who loves to help her local Sunshine Coast community. This is why the owner of Mind and Body Personal Training created the Pretty in Pink Walkathon, with the aim of raising funds to support women battling cancer. Bingley will be joined by hundreds of like-minded people for the fourth annual walk in Caloundra on Sunday, April 19. Not one to shy away from a challenge, she hopes this year’s event will be bigger, better and brighter. “Last year we raised more than $7000… and had 200 people participate,’’ Bingley says. “This year we are aiming for 500 people. I’m aiming to raise $20,000. Come along, dress in pink – get a tutu, pink shoes, pink hat, pink bra.’’ This year’s recipient of the walkathon is local nurse Dimity Fisher, who recently underwent a double mastectomy after being diagnosed with breast cancer. Sadly, Fisher and her family had to postpone a trip to America due to her surgery and Bingley hopes the money raised will send them to Disneyland later this year.

PARVOVIRUS PROTECTION Dr Marja Helme says vaccination is the best way to protect dogs from the lethal parvovirus.
P
arvovirus is one of the most serious diseases your dog can get and even with the best treatment some animals may not survive when infected. Parvovirus is highly contagious. It is spread via stools of dogs infected with the illness. The virus is tough and can survive in the environment for up to 12 months through dog beds, people’s clothing or in dog parks. Unvaccinated or inadequately vaccinated adult dogs and puppies are most susceptible. Early veterinary attention is important if your dog becomes unwell. Parvovirus attacks the gut and the cardiovascular system and the main symptoms are vomiting, diarrhoea and a rapid deterioration due to fluid loss. There is no specific cure for
parvovirus, but supportive care such as a drip to maintain hydration and electrolyte balance, drugs to control vomiting and sometimes a transfusion may be required. It’s recommended that puppies be restricted from outdoor public areas until the entire series of puppy vaccinations are complete. The best advice we can give is to make sure your dog is vaccinated. Puppies should receive their first vaccination at six to eight weeks of age, then a second at 10 to 12 weeks of age. The final vaccination is given between 14 to 16 weeks. Boosters are then required to provide continued adequate immunity. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to contact your vet. Dr Marja Helme is a Sunshine Coast vet based in Palmwoods.

I
love chocolate. From when I first started Changing Habits I have been telling everyone that chocolate can be good for you, which is great news with Easter just around the corner. However, most chocolate is tainted with hydrogenated vegetable oils, additives, preservatives, colours, artificial flavour, powdered milk solids, soy protein isolates, lecithin, and much more. In fact, some chocolates have no chocolate whatsoever – it is all fake. I would eat this type of chocolate and feel sick. So I stopped eating it until I discovered good-quality chocolate made from 100 per cent cacao, with nothing added. Cacao contains many nutrients such as magnesium, iron, zinc, copper and vitamin C, and is high in antioxidants, amino acids and minerals with no additives or flavourings. It’s also
gluten free and suitable for vegans. Since then, I have not stopped making chocolate. I make chilli lime, peppermint, lemon myrtle, coconut ruff and coconut chocolate as well as drinks, ganache, fruit covered in chocolate, cakes, chocolate chip cookies, icings, truffles, slices and mousse. The list is endless. You name it, the versatility of the cacao bean not separated into the butter and the powder has far exceeded my expectations. All these treats are delicious. HYBRID SECURITIES DEMYSTIFIED Mark Davidson is from Ord Minnett in Buderim recent issues have been floating; that is, they pay a fixed margin above the bank bill rate which floats. The total rate is reset on a regular basis, typically every three months. For example, AGL Energy subordinated notes pay a margin of 3.8 per cent above the bank bill rate. If the bank bill rate on reset date is 2.3 per cent, then the total rate is 6.1 per cent, a fair bit better than the six-month term deposit rate of around three per cent. The total rate will be reset again in three months referencing the bank bill rate at the time. Typically, the maturity dates on these instruments can be quite long, with some set over 20 to 30 years, although many have early redemption or reset dates. As they are traded on the market, however, it is possible to exit at any time at the market price. There are also regular reset dates, which sometimes give an early opportunity for redemption.

he asset class of hybrid securities has received a lot of attention in the media during the past 12 months, particularly as term deposit rates have fallen to a level where retirees are finding it difficult to earn sufficient income to fund retirement expenses. So just what are hybrids? Most hybrid securities fall into one of two groups: subordinated notes or preference shares. They share some similarities, but there are also some important differences. Let’s look first at the similarities. Most hybrids have a face value of $100 and are traded on the ASX. They can be fixed or floating-rate securities, although the majority of
As they are market traded the price will not stay at $100, although the price volatility is usually a lot less than that of ordinary shares. At the moment, the price of most hybrids falls between $98 and $105. The margin above $100 consists of a small accrued-interest component plus the premium that investors are willing to pay for the higher yield inherent in hybrid securities. A significant difference between subordinated notes and preference shares is that notes rank higher up the security scale. The highest security available to the retail investor is cash or term deposits, which are government guaranteed up to $250,000. The next in line is subordinated notes followed by preference shares and then ordinary shares. If the issuer of the hybrid runs into financial difficulties, hybrid holders rank above ordinary shareholders when it comes to any return of capital. The above analysis only scratches
the surface of the intricacies of hybrid securities. ’ve often thought there’d be so much more tolerance on Earth if the Middle Eastern, warring countries of the world had access to bacon. For religious reasons, some people don’t do bacon and for bacon reasons, I don’t do religion. But with more and more disharmony I’m beginning to think it might take more than bacon. We should all try to be pandas. Think about it, pandas are a truly racially harmonious creature. They are black and white and Asian all at once. Although they’re not Mexican, so perhaps if we are going to be pandas we need to be pandas holding a taco. Which leads me to one of the greatest jokes in the world. There’s two Mexican brothers, Pepe and Louis. They have been lost in the desert for days and finally Louis collapses and tells his brother he cannot go any further. Pepe refuses to believe they will die in the desert and clambers to the top of a sand dune where on the other side he spies something quite unbelievable. He turns to his brother and says, “Louis, me thinks we are saved, I can see a bacon tree just on the other side of theez dune.” “Are chou sure it’s a bacon tree Pepe, eez not just a mirage?” Louis says. “No Louis, eez definitely a bacon tree I am going to get some for us now…we will surely be saved my brother.” “Chou need to be careful Pepe.” “Eez OK Louis, I got’s this…” And with that Pepe starts to run down the sand dune towards the bacon tree when suddenly gunfire breaks the air and Pepe

NEW TURBO ACTION FOR LEXUS This week Peter Atkinson from AAP reviews the LEXUS NX200t
T
his is the new Lexus. Or so say the giant banners showcasing the new Lexus NX model, on billboards and plastered around Lexus dealerships almost everywhere you look. The new Lexus contains a deliberate double meaning.
Yes, this is the latest model in the Japanese luxury makers growing range. But, more than that, it also represents quite a change of direction for this ambitious company. Not just in terms of styling, but also of philosophy. For the first time in its history, Lexus has unveiled a car with a turbo-charged
engine, the significance of which cannot be overstated. Lexus, with its company-wide commitment to the virtues of hybrid petrol-electric engines as its preferred answer to the world’s fossil fuel pressures, has been steadfast in its resistance to diesel and turbo-charged drivetrains.
So the launch of this two-litre, high-tech turbocharged engine, developed entirely in-house by Lexus, is significant not just because of its effect on this model but because of what it potentially means for all manner of other Lexus models. The verdict? Well, it’s pretty good. Using 16 valves and twin-scroll technology, the force-fed four pumps out a substantial 175 kilowatts and, just as importantly, 350 Newton metres numbers you’d normally associate with a bigger, six-cylinder engine. That, in turn, means more than adequate get-up-and-go for this futuristically-styled mid-sized SUV. The engine is smooth and quiet (mandatory traits for any Lexus powerplant) and it’s responsive and flexible enough to handle most situations with aplomb. Our only misgiving about the new engine was its thirst. Lexus claims official combined consumption of 7.9 litres per 100 kilometres but our test drive, extending to about 600 kilometres including two lengthy highway runs, delivered slightly disappointing numbers of 8.2 litres per 100 kilometres. Not disastrous, but perhaps a little

north of what we’d expected. That’s the trade-off for squeezing a few extra ounces of power from a modestlysized engine. How about the NX itself? Well, we first encountered this machine on its national launch in Adelaide late last year and have been itching ever since to get back behind the wheel for a longer drive. That chance arrived recently in the form of both the NX300h hybrid version and the NX200t turbo petrol variant. Testing the two models back to back gave a useful insight into the philosophical change mentioned earlier. First the hybrid, then the new turbo. The result? I’d give the points to the turbo. The hybrid NX300h with its 2.5-litre, four-cylinder normally-aspirated engine, bolstered by a 50-kilowatt electric motor which curiously drives the rear wheels only makes a positive impression. It’s sublimely quiet and the added weight of the electrics and associated batteries makes the car feel granite-like in its ride and smoothness. But that extra weight also compromises performance (although not fuel efficiency) and it sometimes feels a little bulky in quick changes of direction. The NX sits somewhere between a
traditional SUV and a sedan in its ride-height settings but it definitely feels more car-like in its handling. That nimbleness is amplified in the turbo version it’s as much as 45 kilograms lighter than the hybrid and that’s evident in handling and responsiveness.
The six-speed auto, too, feels noticeably more responsive to throttle inputs than the hybrid, whose constantly variable (CVT) auto is smoother but slower to react. The turbo’s ample torque a grunty 350 Newton metres available virtually from idle coupled with an impressive 175 kilowatts of power makes this a pleasingly sharp machine. Claimed fuel efficiency is 7.7 litres per 100 kilometres for the two-wheel-drive version, slightly higher at 7.9 litres per 100
kilometres for the all-wheel drive version. That’s fair, but hardly outstanding, although given the engine’s impressive outputs, it’s a reasonable balance. The NX will have four variants for each engine configuration - the base-model Luxury spec in two-wheel or all-wheeldrive, plus all-wheel-drive versions of the mid-range F-Sport and flagship SportLuxury models. The two-wheel-drive version of the turbocharged NX starts at a fairly accessible on-road price of $58,886 with costs rising as you go up the chain to the all-wheel-drive Luxury ($66,596); F-Sport ($70,990) and Sport Luxury ($80,260). We tested the very smart mid-range F-Sport variant having previously experienced the hybrid F-Sport model in an earlier road test. The NX’s external styling is quite out there in some respects, particularly the aggressive look to front end with its bold, in-your-face spindle grille, stylised headlights and long front overhang. Being a Lexus, it’s jam-packed with techno tricks. There’s no doubt the NX will be a welcome addition to the Lexus range and early reports are that it has already given sales a substantial boost. A turbo boost, you could say.

THREE NEW CARS GET FIVE STARS The Ford Mondeo, Toyota Prius and Lexus NX have entered the esteemed club of ANCAP five-star rated vehicles.
R
esearch indicates that people consider safety one of the top priorities when buying a new car. Motorists looking to purchase a vehicle now have three new models to consider with ANCAP last week releasing five-star safety ratings for three diverse models – the Ford Mondeo, Toyota Prius V and Lexus NX. These ratings extend across all current model variants. The Australasian New Car Assessment Program is Australasia’s leading independent vehicle safety advocate and through its safety rating program provides consumers with information on protection and collision avoidance capabilities in the most common types of serious crashes. The new Ford Mondeo, which is due for launch in Australia in the coming months, scored highly. It comes equipped with a long list of safety features including side headprotecting (curtain) airbags for front

and second row seats, inflatable rear seat belts, smart key, trailer stability control and automatic emergency call as standard. The seven-seat Toyota Prius V hybrid also passed ANCAP assessment with flying colours achieving high scores in all physical crash tests and providing a broad range of standard key safety features.
As a result, all Prius V variants built from 2012 will earn the five-star rating. ANCAP chief executive officer Nicholas Clarke says the Prius was a good family car. “It has side head protection and seat belt reminders for all three rows, reversing camera, and provides excellent pedestrian protection,’’ Clarke says.
All variants of the Lexus NX launched late last year also meet the same five-star level of safety. Autonomous emergency braking (AEB) is available for all three models but only on higher-priced variants. “With ANCAP’s annual increases to requirements, ANCAP reminds consumers to look for two simple things when buying their next car,’’ says Clarke. “First, look for five stars. Second, look for a model which has the latest ANCAP date stamp. “That way you can be assured you’re buying one of the safest cars possible.’’ All three models qualify for a 2015 ANCAP date stamp. Earlier date stamps indicate a model has been assessed to earlier, less stringent standards.

The agent and auctioneer is helping to organise the inaugural Compass Cup, which will raise funds for local charity Compass Institute. The institute is a Sunshine Coast-based charity that provides training, education and support for young Queenslanders with a disability. “I’ve donated 50 rounds of golf to the institute and it’s just an opportunity for people to have a good time with all
proceeds going to the Compass Institute and farm,” Burns tells My Property Preview. “They have a little shop now and they sell their produce and wares. It [the institute] is an outstanding opportunity for these kids. They have a great time there. It is really good.” Burns is clearly passionate about the charity and reminds readers that it relies heavily on events such as the upcoming golf day for its funding. He is hoping to see lots of keen golfers supporting the day and having fun. The institute’s DJ McGlynn says the
money raised will be used at the Compass Farm. “It will go towards a woodworking and art facility. This is our seventh social enterprise.” He says the money raised will buy tools and other equipment. “Mike has been wonderful in donating the golf passes,” McGlynn adds. ESTUARY: Trevally are chopping into bait in the deep channel from Twin Waters around Goat Island. Lures and live bait are the go. There are whiting and f athead from the Maroochy bar area. Larger bream are starting to show up, so there’s a good winter season just around the corner. You’ll get mud crabs at Bli Bli. SURF: Bait is moving in close to Pincushion with tailor and some spotted mackerel rounding them up. Whiting and bream are in the gutters along Maroochy Beach. OFFSHORE: The Blinker is the hot spot for kingies on jigged lures and mixed reef f sh at dusk. The Barwon Banks is the best for larger snapper, pearl perch, rosy job f sh and tiger f athead. You’ll get spanner crabs east of Murphy’s Reef. FRESHWATER: Most impoundments are f ring for golden perch with Somerset leading the way. Live shrimp jigged around each snag is returning f sh. Smaller dams such as Cooloolabin and Lake Macdonald are having a good run of bass, jew and Mary River cod. Borumba is best for saratoga on f y, and bass on lures.

THE BRIGHT SIDE OF LIFE Our region’s future depends on the big dreams of those who don’t quit, writes Richard O’Leary.
A
s a politics tragic, I read most of what was said about Malcolm Fraser following his death last week, and one quote stuck out for me more than the others: “You have to be an optimist. Why involve yourself in issues of public policy unless you are?” I’d like to think most people would consider me a glass half-full kind of guy. After all, I have followed the Parramatta Eels my whole life – and besides the glory days of the ’80s, there’s been little to celebrate. I’m a regular visitor to the club’s forum site, where fans have a wonderful term for optimists – they call them “unicorns”, because they believe there’s always a rainbow just over the horizon, regardless of the evidence to the contrary, whether that be a Parramatta win or the discovery of a mythical horse with a horn. But I don’t think you have to be
a unicorn to feel optimistic about where this region is headed. In the last week alone, there have been a couple of events that give you confidence about its future. The first is the decision by Youi to base its global headquarters at Sippy

billion dollars injected into our economy through wages alone. The second event is much smaller in scale, but important nonetheless. On the weekend, the Bellingham Maze re-opened in all its former glory. When the cypress pine hedge maze was removed in 2013, many feared they would never have the opportunity to walk through it again. But the owners never gave up and 20 months later, a new lilly pilly hedge has risen and the maze is back doing what it does best – keeping kids amused and their parents confused. It may well have been easier to walk away two years ago, but the owners stuck with it and the region is better for it. It’s these sorts of decisions, which happen every day on the Sunshine Coast, which determine the future of the region – one which is based on the glass being half-empty, or spilling over the sides with unicorn juice.
