o say my wife is addicted to op shopping may be overstating the situation, and it probably wouldn’t be advisable to say so even if it was true. But it’s fair to say she has come home with plenty of dresses, skirts, blouses, handbags, and clothes for the boys. There’s obviously the buzz of the bargain, but I think it’s her way of getting a guilt-free fashion f x by doing her bit for the planet (after all it’s just another way to recycle) and helping a charity. She also donates bags of clothes to Vinnies – although they tend to be the shirts and shorts our boys seem to outgrow in the time it takes to watch an episode of the Octonauts. And it appears my wife is not alone; op shops have become de rigueur, so My Weekly Preview has taken a look to see what all the fuss is about. Watching coverage of the state election can be a bit like op shopping; it can take a lot of time to f nd something that’s good. But help is at hand – MWP is sifting through all the statements, stories, and missteps to cut out all the boring bits and bring you the most memorable quotes of the week (p16). We’ll also take you for a ride on the Ghan, test drive the new Lexus, judge the best and worst dressed, and as always, there’s plenty of property. I look forward to talking with you again next week.

TREASURE TROVE There’s a shopping phenomenon sweeping the Coast which may just provide the solution to your Christmas induced credit card crunch. The humble op shop has become the first stop for many fashionistas as they look to combine the buzz of a bargain with the feelgood factor of helping a charity. WORDS: CANDICE HOLZNAGEL IMAGES: PAULA BRENNAN

annah Bunting’s hands rifle through the clothes hanging on the rack as her eyes quickly scan and appraise each piece. Silk dresses, bohemian skirts, camisole and swing tops, shift dresses, oversized coats, blazers and pants in every fabric and colour imaginable. Pink, black, yellow, print – you name it, it’s there. It’s not unusual to unearth some great pieces she tells me, her voice ringing with excitement. Only last month she picked up a classic Chanel skirt for $5 from a store in Maroochydore. Then there was the time she found a $25 pre-loved Louis Vuitton handbag. Today there is no reward from a famed French fashion house, but we do snag a black and white Zara shift dress for $7. It’s not a bad result for an hour of hunting. It’s the name of the op shop game, according to Bunting. Some days you strike gold and other days you walk away empty handed. Bunting (pictured), 24, is a part-time model and owner of mobile hairdressing business Pura Vida Hair. She is also a self-confessed fashion and op shop fanatic. “I grew up knowing about pre-loved fashion,’’ she says. “My mum owned the f rst pre-loved clothing shop in

Southport and sold great clothing like vintage Chanel at really good prices. We used to raid mum’s wardrobe and when we started doing that she started to take us shopping for ourselves.’’ A decade on and Bunting now frequents the local op shop scene. She has no favourite hot spot, preferring to scout different stores up and down the Coast. “With modelling, sometimes they ask us to bring along accessories and basic pieces. They are searching for different things. The op shops have those unusual pieces. “I op shop for everything from everyday wear to clothes for dressups or op shop parties.’’ For the record – and for those not up with the lingo – an op shop party is when the host dictates a monetary limit and you have to wear whatever you can buy for that amount. “In the fashion sense, I think a lot of people are enjoying op shopping now that vintage clothing is in style,’’ Bunting adds. “You’ve just got to have the patience to f nd the right outf t. My advice is don’t go looking for a specif c item because you might be disappointed. Just go in there and have a look around.’’ From designer pieces to everyday work wear, our op shops have it all. They have become not only a

necessity to many, but a staple stop on shopping itineraries. It was a Tuesday following Christmas when I ventured out on the op shop trail with a sense of determination and my purse stocked with cash (many small op shops still don’t offer eftpos facilities so it’s best to be prepared). The National Retail Association estimates Australians spent $43.7 billion in the lead-up to Christmas. It comes as no surprise that as a direct result, January and February are traditionally quieter times on the retail scene, with consumers tightening their belts. Throw in a State Government election and those belts draw even tighter. It seems this isn’t the case for op shoppers and I was surprised to see dozens of people browsing aisles f lled with clothes, books and homewares. “We’re always busy,’’ says Lifeline Bokarina manager Shelley Chick. “These months are no different to any other month here.’’ With those hurried words she is off to the showroom f oor, her ponytail swinging behind her as she moves hastily from customer to customer. The store’s intake speaks for itself: it generates the largest amount of funds raised in the greater Sunshine Coast area and is in the top 10 Lifeline stores in Queensland. [ Lifeline Regional Retail coordinator Melissa Keary says the op shops raise funds for the service’s 24-hour crisis hotline and to raise community awareness of mental health illness leading to suicide. “Together we are preventing suicide and protecting families, friends and community from the devastating consequences of losing someone close. Lifeline answers more than 700,000 calls per year. “Working hard for something we don’t care about is called stress. Working hard for something we love is called passion.’’ There are 60 of these passionate volunteers in the Bokarina store, ranging from retired antique dealers, book specialists, merchandising and fashion experts. These people are all willing to make your shopping trip a memorable one. “We get some great labels such as Lisa Ho, Camilla, Tiger Lily, Ginger and Smart, Sass and Bide and many more,’’ Keary says. “We also have the basics in clothing at great affordable prices.’’ Perseverance is key to f nding these beauty bargains, says Sunshine Coast stylist Dianna Mullins.

“You need to be prepared to have a good dig through and see what you f nd,’’ she says. “You can f nd some designer pieces that are good quality. There are people who have the disposable income to buy and then pass their clothes on to charities. “It might be a connector piece in your wardrobe. You might have a base suit and need a little top to pop in colour. Sometimes you can miss things in the shops… with op shops you can never guess what you will f nd. “More now than ever in fashion you can choose what you want to wear. Before we were bound by trends. Now you can pick what you like and it has opened up fashion a lot.’’ Bunting agrees and says this is why op shops are the holy grail of style. “Beforehand people only compared what everyone else was wearing,” she says. “Now times have changed and you aren’t pinned in to a particular style. “Open up an expensive fashion magazine and you will f nd clothes and accessories in there that you f nd in op shops. “Have the patience and you will f nd some great surprises.’’

HOW TO DONATE

Donating to op shops will always be fashionable. Do your part for the community and give preloved belongings the chance to brighten up someone else’s home. According to Vinnes.org.au op shops welcome good quality clothes, books, music and bric-a-brac. Donate by delivering your goods directly to a store or to a collection bin. DO NOT use op shops as a way to dispose of rubbish. Items that are damaged or broken cost the charities money to dispose of and takes away money from people in need.

Taylor Moss primed for country music stardom WORDS: Sam Walker

S

unshine Coast local, Taylor Moss, will take to the stage in the Toyota Star Maker final at the Tamworth Country Music Festival this Sunday. The 19-year-old from Cooroibah is one of 10 emerging country music artists to take part in the f nal, which has been the main event on the f rst Sunday of the festival since the competition’s inception in 1979. “I’m very excited. I’m feeling very positive,” she says. Moss is in good company with the entrants, who hail from across the country, selected by a panel of judges. And Star Maker has helped launch the careers of some of the industry’s biggest names including Lee Kernaghan, Keith Urban, James Blundell and Beccy Cole. Three grand f nalists will be selected from the f nal to perform in the Toyota Star Maker grand f nal next Friday along with industry stalwarts including Lee Kernaghan, Travis Collins and the Bob Corbett Band.

I love the lifestyle and the music and the fact that everyone in Nashville has the same goals and the same dreams. I could learn so much from other people; we could all work together as a team Moss, who has been singing since she was three and writing songs and performing since she was 13, can’t imagine doing anything else with her life. “Music makes me feel whole. I feel if I didn’t have music in my life there wouldn’t be me, there would be no Taylor Moss,” she says. “I love being able to make people smile and make people dance. “Music can trigger so many emotions.” Moss is a student at the Queensland Conservatorium at Griff th University on the Gold Coast where she is doing a Bachelor of Popular Music but her focus and her love is country music. She describes her music as country pop and says she is inf uenced by Keith Urban, Lady Antebellum and Taylor Swift. Outside of music she loves to go to the beach, camping and wakeboarding. But while music dominates her life, family is also very important to the Sunshine Coast teen and she loves hanging out with them and being a role model to her brothers, aged 14 and three. “Whenever I get asked the question what do I want to do in the future, I’ve always wanted to pay it forward.” Having received much support throughout her life, she has a strong sense of wanting to give something back, especially to her younger brothers. [ 18 ] MY W EEKLY P RE VIE W \ J AN UARY 16, 20 1 5

18.indd 1

“I want to be the best role model big sister I can be.” Moss describes herself as very conf dent and bubbly, talkative and extremely determined – attributes that have contributed to her success. Last month she returned from her third visit to Nashville, where she wrote all the songs for her second EP, which she has just released. She doesn’t f nd it diff cult to f nd inspiration for her music – like most girls, her emotions swing from one extreme to another and her music moves “from complete heartbreak to being head over heels (in love)”. She gives herself plenty of time to write, allowing her creativity to f ow naturally. “I would never put my inspiration on a deadline. It’s like putting your heart on a deadline and saying I’m going to fall in love in this time – it’s never going to happen.” While the Star Maker f nal at Tamworth is on her mind this week, the teen has set her sights on moving to Nashville and has a goal of relocating to the country music capital of the world by the time she is 21 – she’s got 18 months to go. “I love the lifestyle and the music and the fact that everyone in Nashville has the same goals and the same dreams. “I could learn so much from other people; we could all work together as a team.”

About Star Maker Star Maker is an annual search for an individual star who has the greatest potential to take advantage of the opportunities offered by the prize package, which is valued at more than $100,000. It includes the recording of a full album with a leading producer, full use of a Toyota vehicle including a fuel card for a year, guaranteed performances at major festivals around Australia and a return f ight to Nashville to attend the CMA Festival.

Tamworth Country Music Festival 2015 • Friday January 16 to Sunday January 25. • One of Australia’s largest music festivals and one of the world’s top 10 music festivals. • More than 800 performers will entertain crowds with 4000 shows held across 120 venues throughout the festival. • More than 600 buskers will perform in Peel Street. • More than 55,000 visitors will f ock to Tamworth for the festival. • The pinnacle event of the festival is the Golden Guitars – Country Music Awards of Australia. China proves lucrative for Glenview business

Cutting-edge New Media Award winners on show

Sunshine Coast business that recently completed the construction of a multimillion dollar aquaculture facility in China says the key to business success in the region is not being afraid of hopping on a plane and meeting the client face-to-face. There’ll be a lot more f ights on the cards for staff members of award-winning Glenview company RADAQUA as they undertake stage two of the project in Zhao’an in the Fujian Province. “We’ve been constructing in China for the past eight months and now we’ve moved into the management phase. We’ll have two to three staff f ying over to China on a rotational basis every few months to ensure the facility is operating at the highest standard,” says RADAQUA’s Executive Director Rodney Missen. China is the world’s largest seafood consuming country and the industry has begun seeing the value in sustainable f sh farming as a way of feeding the population. The RADAQUA facility, when it reaches its peak, will be able to produce more than 6.2 million f sh per year for the Chinese domestic seafood market. Missen says it has been highly benef cial having the support of Sunshine Coast Council during the business dealings.

Bubble-blowing robots, mind-bending animations and interactive pixel mosaics – the inspiring creations of local artists will go on display this month as part of the Sunshine Coast Art Prize New Media Award exhibition. The winning artworks will be accompanied by a range of workshops, forums, seminars and discussions that aim to encourage visitors to interact with art. The exhibition, which begins January 30 at Caloundra Regional Gallery, will include a large digital installation by Mic Black featuring the stories of 468 local school kids – converted by the artist into LED colour tiles. The pixel mosaic piece will stand four metres tall and 2.5 metres wide. Aiming to encourage emerging artists between the ages of 15-30 years, the New Media Award focuses on digital projection, moving image, still digital image, digital photograph, soundscape and new media installation. This is the f rst time the category has been included in the Sunshine Coast Art Prize. The Sunshine Coast Art Prize has been running for nine years and is among the nation’s most signif cant regional art prizes, attracting the best contemporary and emerging Australian artists.

“Council assisted greatly. The Chinese regard the role of the mayor quite highly, so it was wonderful to have Mayor Jamieson attend the opening ceremony here in China and to have council’s support for the project,” he says. Jamieson says RADAQUA is a f ne example of a Sunshine Coast-based company that is developing leading global technologies and solutions in line with the council’s Regional Economic Development Strategy.

Sunshine Coast Dr Maria Arena and Dr writers Dr Eileen Eileen Herbert-Goodall Herbert-Goodall and Dr Maria Arena have created a website called Field of Words in the belief emerging writers will come to contribute work, share experiences and compete for a bi-annual national short story competition. Herbert-Goodall says her experiences as

a writer motivated her to develop the project. “I know how diff cult it is for an emerging writer to have their work read by the public – it took me years to get published in f ction. “Field of Words is a constructive forum where writers can come together online, exchange ideas and share their work.” The website includes useful writing tips, fun writing challenges, and a critiquing and editing service. The f rst competition opens on February 2. It gives writers the chance to have their work published on the website, and share $600 in prize money. Visit the website at f eldofwords.com.au.

Environment Levy Highlights 2013-2014 Message from the Mayor Your Environment Levy in action for 2013-2014 The Sunshine Coast is renowned for its environmental values, including its waterways and coastal foreshores and its diversity of native vegetation and animals–all of which help support the lifestyles and livelihoods of the region. Sunshine Coast Council’s vision is to be Australia’s most sustainable region – vibrant, green, diverse. We are committed to protecting and enhancing the environment and providing an enviable lifestyle for the Sunshine Coast community and its visitors.

Buying, protecting and enhancing environmentally significant land

$6.13M

Your Environment Levy funds are helping Council to purchase environmentally signi¿cant land to expand its conservation network. By managing these lands, Council is contributing to the protection and enhancement of the region’s biodiversity values for today’s community and future generations to enjoy and appreciate.

Four new reserves 398 hectares

acquisition program

$480,000 establishing our new reserves

The $60 Sunshine Coast Environment Levy, contributed by all rateable properties, enables us to invest further in the region’s biodiversity, waterways and foreshores, and to strengthen partnerships with the community. To make sure we are investing the Levy where it matters most, we refer to our long-term planning tools, Council’s Biodiversity Strategy 2010-2020, Waterways and Coastal Management Strategy 2011-2021 and the Local Government Area Pest Management Plan 2012-2016. Protecting the Sunshine Coast environment is an important foundation of this community and your Environment Levy helps us achieve that aim.

Delivering on-ground environmental projects The Environment Levy invests in major rehabilitation and on-ground management projects such as removing weeds in coastal foreshores and road reserves and restoring native vegetation along our waterway corridors. These projects are targeted at maintaining, enhancing and reconnecting our natural environment.

We have committed to building impressive environmental and sustainability credentials and we want to build on these to reflect our community’s strong desire to maintain and enhance our natural assets, biodiversity, pristine landscapes and outstanding liveability. I am very proud of the significant outcomes we achieved in 2013-14 and look forward to continuing that success as we strive to become the most sustainable region in Australia. Cr Mark Jamieson Mayor

TASTY TRAIN TRIP Words: Caris Bizzaca, AAP

W

hen settling down for lunch on a long-haul train trip, most people are probably expecting pre-packed sandwiches, or a squashed sticky muesli bar, rescued from the depths of their bag. Hardly appetising. But a plate brimming with fresh and colourful local produce? Fine dining options that range from snapper, to steaks, to quinoa salads? That just seems crazy. Not so on Great Southern Rail trains The Ghan and Indian Pacif c. In fact the latter, which winds across the country from Perth to Sydney and vice versa, whets passenger appetites with a Food & Wine train. In the second half of 2015, the Indian Pacif c Food & Wine Train will chug across the country again, bursting with local produce, new ingredients and a foodie focus. So while you’re watching eagles soar across the arid Nullarbor after a stop at Kalgoorlie, or gaze at

stretching kangaroos and mountain ranges in New South Wales, you can also be savouring some of the best food from the area. For chef Jenny Taylor, it was a pleasant surprise to see just how seasonally driven the food on the Indian Pacif c is. “When we go through Port Augusta or we go over some section of land, we try to get the produce from that area so there’s a story behind everything we eat,” she says. So the grilled southern bluef n tuna is sourced from Port Lincoln, the chook in the tarragon chicken galantine is from South Australia and the cheese plate, features cheese from every state – a Hunter Belle ‘Blue Moon’, Alexandrina ‘Mt Jagged’ cheddar and Margaret River brie. Mouth watering yet? The guy who dreams up the train’s tantalising menus is chef de partie Joseph Cobiac, who says it all starts with the produce. The trick is not getting too carried away. “Let those f avours do the talking,” he says.

* The writer travelled as a guest of The Indian Pacific and Great Southern Rail

And when it comes time for the Food & Wine Train to roll in (and out) of town, the chefs really get to have some fun – because they’re not the only ones bringing something to the table. On the inaugural trip, celebrity chefs Adam Liaw and Mark Olive were on board and Cobiac says it really injected a burst of enthusiasm into the kitchen – and the dining car too. Passengers feasted on menus designed by the famous chefs, with highlights including Liaw’s lamb loin and shoulder with black vinegar honey, which was fall-apart tender. Meanwhile, Olive got your tastebuds tingling through a platter piled high with delicious smoked meats of the native variety – emu, crocodile and barramundi. Taylor says there are so many different options to cater to everyone’s tastes. “It broadens their horizons.” And probably your waistline a little too, with all food and wine included on the four-day journey for platinum and gold ticket-holders (red service has a different dining area and menu). There is time to walk some of that off when the train stops. Excursions include a stroll around the bustling Adelaide Central Market, a wander through the art galleries at Broken Hill, or a break in the scorching, all-but-deserted town that is Cook. But as the train puffs to your f nal stop, regardless of what you chose to do or eat, you know the Food & Wine Train is def nitely an indulgent treat. The Indian Pacif c Food & Wine train will return in the second half of 2015. Exact dates are yet to be conf rmed. For information visit greatsouthernrail.com.au.

Why I want to be a part of your home: I would love to have my own home and I have been waiting for those special caring people to walk through the gates of the refuge and choose me. What you should know about me: I am very happy, active and friendly but I am deaf so I will require new owners who are committed to training me via signing commands. I will make a wonderful pet for the right situation. I am desexed, vaccinated and microchipped.

Torio male domestic shorthair, 4 years What I love to do most is: lie around in a quiet spot and take a well-deserved cat-nap. Why I want to be a part of your home: I have been living in the refuge since November, so I feel it is time I had my own new home. What you should know about me: I am four years old and sadly my owner could no longer keep me, so I came to the refuge through no fault of my own. I am OK around another cat, and have lived with a dog before. I am affectionate, but independent. I am desexed, vaccinated and microchipped.

Are hormones draining your energy, making you crazy or your weight won’t shift regardless of exercise? Mood swings so strong you just want to scream or crawl into bed and sleep till it’s over. Anxiety over nothing, irritable over everything, crying at the drop of a hat! Now, I’m not just talking about menopause and PMS; to all of you men, MANopause can and will happen, so listen up! Are you irritable, nervous, depressed, low libido, foggy thinking, can’t sleep, or gaining weight? Is anything sounding familiar? Hormonal imbalances don’t just happen without cause. Why can some people eat anything and maintain their weight, yet you gain 3kg overnight from just thinking about breaking your diet! It’s not all about weight, but some of it is, these symptoms are just the tip of the iceberg for what hormones can do to your body when out of balance long term, accelerated aging, permanent metabolism malfunction, leading to diabetes and heart disease, decline in brain function, including loss of short term memory, and loss of important older memories permanently. There are six triggers that affect hormones including diet, food reactions, def ciencies, infections, stress, and f tness. Most people only deal with one of these at a time. You’ll

see a specialist in only one area, though if you don’t address all of them, you’re caught in a cycle that goes on for life. The frustrating part is once these triggers upset your hormones, your hormones cause these triggers again! How do you stop it? Actually, it’s pretty easy to stop, as long as you deal with them all at the same time and properly! I have seen hormone creams to balance hormones, the pill, HRT, and bio-identical hormones. These might help your current symptoms, though they won’t f x the cause, and they won’t f x the permanent effects, so the cycle continues and you become reliant on them. Fortunately, it can be treated properly, and most symptoms are improved within weeks, and completely relieved within just a few months. Hormones are one part of a 7 step process for permanently treating mood issues. These steps have been proven with testing to improve brain and total body function, without medication. If you’d like to know more, call for a free half hour consultation with one of our naturopaths, where you’ll learn about everything that causes hormonal and mood problems, and what to do about it.

Dead heat in Death Valley WIN News weather presenter and meteorologist Hannah McEwan explains heat waves.

T

he highest air temperature ever recorded was 56.7 degrees Celsius at Death Valley, California in 1913. The standard way of measuring temperature is in the air, 1.5 metres above the ground and away from direct sunlight. Temperature measured directly on the ground can be over 30 degrees Celsius more than the air temperature. On the Sunshine Coast, our position and climate inf uences don’t regularly allow us to see temperatures over 40 degrees, and heat waves are even less common. A heat wave is def ned by the World Meteorological Organisation as

daytime maximum temperatures at least f ve degrees above average for a consecutive period of f ve or more days. The world record for the most days in a row above 37.8 degrees was 160 days in Marble Bar, Western Australia. The most favourable condition for a heat wave is to have high pressure above an area for several days or weeks, usually in summer. When we have high pressure, air sinks towards the surface. The region of sinking air acts like a cap and traps the heat instead of letting it rise in the atmosphere. Without the rising air, we don’t have cloud cover or rain, and hence more heat builds. In 2013, Australia had a record breaking heat wave that continued for more than two weeks across a large part of the country. A heat wave is considered severe weather and can cause major damage to agriculture, widespread power outages due to an increase in electricity from air conditioning, and in extreme cases loss of life from overheating.

The cost-effective way to invest offshore

Chris Harris is from Ord Minnett in Buderim

T

he need to gain offshore exposure, directly and/or via investments listed on the ASX, with offshore earnings is important. In this article, we’ll take a high level overview of exchange traded funds (ETFs). An ETF trades the same as any other stock on the ASX, the only major difference being that rather than representing the value of just one company, the ETF gives exposure to the companies in an entire index. The performance of the ETF seeks to ref ect the performance of the index, including payment of any distributions, less the charges applied by the ETF provider.

ETFs allow investors to simply and cost-effectively establish a diversif ed portfolio through an individual security. They can be used to create a diversif ed portfolio or to complement an existing portfolio. A good example is iShares Global Healthcare ETF, which is an index composed of global equities in the healthcare sector and is a subset of

ETFs allow investors to establish a diversified portfolio lio the Standard & Poor’s Global 1200 Index. This ETF provides exposure to international shares focusing on the healthcare sector. Aside from accessibility, several other features of ETFs make them worth considering. The f rst is liquidity, because the level of demand for an ETF, whether high or low, is unlikely to affect its market price. Specialists (typically international

broking f rms) will operate in the market to match buyers and sellers. Investors are also able to buy or sell an ETF during ASX trading hours and at a price quoted on the ASX. Investors can also track the value of ETFs on an intra-day basis. ETFs are also transparent. They are designed to ensure they trade close to their underlying value and provide income for investors through distributions. This provides the investor with certainty that the on-market price will ref ect the value of the assets held in the fund. The holdings of each ETF portfolio are disclosed on a regular basis. Finally, they are cost-effective. ETFs are often able to achieve lower operating costs, so the underlying management and expense fees are

typically lower than actively managed funds. ETFs are also more costeffective (and simpler) than holding the same exposure through individual shares. A brokerage fee will typically apply when buying or selling an ETF, just as in trading stocks. The number of ETFs available to Australian investors continues to expand. At last count, there were more than 100 ETFs trading on the ASX with exposures to Australian and international shares, currency, f xed income and commodities. Five-piece Sydney rock band The Preatures have two EPs to their name and have performed at sold-out Australian tours. A thrifty luxury car for city slickers WORDS Peter Atkinson

W

e all have things we’d probably do differently if given a second chance. For Lexus, I suspect that applies to its baby hatchback, the CT200h. Not so much that it would like to change the car itself, but rather the way it went about marketing the smallest, most affordable model in its range. From the outset, Lexus tried to position the CT as some kind of sporty option, even to the

point of launching it at the Australian Formula One Grand Prix. An equally confusing advertising campaign for the CT seemed to further muddle the message when Lexus was hell-bent on breaking free of its somewhat fuddy-duddy image. The problem was, the CT200h is the perfect car for those ‘fuddy duddies’ Lexus was trying to distance itself from.

It’s affordable, comfortable, practical and incredibly frugal – perfect for those empty-nesters who, in growing numbers, are moving closer to their favourite inner-city restaurants and coffee shops. But with just 100 kilowatts of power on tap, it was never going to fulf l that sporty promise. Fortunately for Lexus, the car industry is full of second chances. Between new models, there’s always the mid-life freshen-up. That opportunity has arrived for Lexus and the new look CT200h. It has tweaked the exterior styling and thrown in some improved technology and features in a bid to spark some fresh sales momentum for the CT, which has won about 3000 Aussie buyers since its launch. There are three trim choices instead of four – the previous Prestige model has been replaced by the Luxury variant at the entry-level price of $39,900 – with Lexus claiming upgraded specif cations into the bargain. There’s also an F-Sport at $48,990 and Sport Luxury at $56,990. The CT is one of seven hybrids in the Lexus range, with the Japanese luxury brand selling almost half of all hybrid vehicles sold in Australia. It has made huge headway by offering plush cars with an environmental edge. And that is where the CT200’s sweet spot truly lies. It’s not a sports machine, although it can, in sports mode, be a fun thing to drive. In fact it’s the ultimate city car, perfect for people who live in the inner suburbs, occasionally

[ venturing away for weekends but mostly driving in heavy traff c. In this context, the CT200 is almost without peer. We covered more than 400 kilometres during our week-long test, almost exclusively in the kind of stop-start traff c conditions that play perfectly into this car’s comfort zone – and used barely more fuel than we would have if on a motorbike. Comfort, by the way, is the operative word with the CT. In normal mode its performance is modest, albeit beautifully smooth and quiet. But by dialling up Sport mode, the CT gets a punchier edge to it: not exactly fast but adequately responsive, making it a breeze to dart in and out of traff c. On the open road, the CT feels right at home. It cruises comfortably and silently at highway speeds with enough performance left in reserve for any accelerating or overtaking. Signif cantly, though, it will use less fuel in the busy commuter drive than it will on the highway. In stop-start conditions, it relies more heavily on its hybrid electric motor,

producing better fuel economy than when it’s using its petrol engine to maintain cruising speeds. We averaged just 4.9 litres per 100 kilometres for our 400 kilometre-long test – remarkable numbers for this kind of driving. This upgraded model features an improved interior with new switchgear and displays, second generation Remote Touch cabin management system and a reverse camera across the range. There’s also an upgraded version

of the clever Enform service, accessed via the colour central screen, that allows occupants to contact Lexus customer care and download information via the internet. Drivers also receive audio and visual alerts to traff c hazards such as speed cameras, level crossings and school zones. Lexus also boasts of new technology in the high-end audio system in CT models, which feature world-f rst bamboo loudspeaker technology and uses natural f bres to create what Lexus says are the world’s thinnest speakers - improving sound quality. We tested the f agship Sport Luxury model – at $56,990 certainly not cheap for a car this size and fairly modest performance – although one with enough features to probably justify the price tag. Not to mention the amount of money you’ll save on fuel. Which brings us to one f nal question about the CT200h. Is it a posh Prius – or the cheapest luxury car on the market? That’s a question best answered by Lexus.

Subaru customers benefit from FTA with Japan

S

ubaru Australia has announced it will extend duty reductions to three more key models in its range, pending finalisation of the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with Japan. From today, manufacturer’s list prices (MLP) for the award-winning Subaru Forester range will reduce by $1000 for every variant, while each XV will be $750 less and every Impreza $500 less. Subaru’s customer-friendly initiative comes in response to the

formalising of the FTA. “This latest development will complete a strategy that we began in March, with the introduction of the new generation WRX at a MLP of $38,990 – less than when the original launched 20 years ago, yet packed with specif cation and features, says Nick Senior, managing director, Subaru Australia. “Perhaps our biggest statement came last month when the new Liberty launched at up to 25 per cent less than the outgoing model, and Outback at up to 17 per cent less. “This has been a very carefully thought-out long-term strategy to ensure the optimum result for our customers. Senior says Subaru’s status as the only mainstream brand to import all vehicles in its range from Japan had also ensured the customer benef t price realignments right across the range.

Going down? With interest rates so low, more Australian borrowers are opting for variable home loan products. By Jemma Pearson

F

ixed rate demand has hit its lowest level in 22 months, according to new data. The latest national home loan approval data from Mortgage Choice shows f xed rate home loans accounted for just 22.29 per cent of all loans written in December. This is a signif cant drop from the 26.98 per cent recorded the month before.

whether borrowers opt for a f xed rate mortgage or a variable rate home loan, they will be able to secure a competitive rate. “Australia’s lenders are offering some very sharply priced products at the moment, so regardless of what type of home loan product you eventually decide upon, now is a good time to be a home buyer,” she says.

Mortgage Choice spokesperson Jessica Darnbrough says with speculation mounting that the Reserve Bank of Australia could cut the cash rate again in the coming months, it’s not surprising an increasing number of borrowers are opting for a variable rate home loan. “At the beginning of December last year, speculation was rife that the Reserve Bank of Australia could cut the cash rate throughout 2015,” Darnbrough says. “Ongoing weakness in the Australian and global economy has encouraged some analysts to change their cash rate forecasts to include up to two further rate cuts. While future cash rate cuts are purely speculation at the moment, it would seem the chatter has been enough to encourage more home buyers to take out a variable rate mortgage.” She says if rates were cut again, borrowers with a variable rate mortgage may benef t. Across the country, variable rate home loans are most popular in Victoria, with this type of product accounting for 85.79 per cent of all home loans written last month. South Australia and Western Australia were not far behind, with variable rate products accounting for 82.81 and 82.11 per cent respectively, while 77.25 per cent of Queensland borrowers chose this type of product. Variable rate products were least popular in New South Wales, with this type of mortgage accounting for 70.61 per cent of all loans written. By comparison, f xed rates remained very popular in the state, accounting for almost 30 per cent of all loans written. Looking ahead, Darnbrough says regardless of

When you sign on for a new home loan, the f rst question to consider is whether to go for a f xed or variable product. So what’s the difference? A home loan can be f xed for a set period (say one, three or f ve years), which means the interest rate remains unchanged for that period. Variable loans mean your rate will change according to f uctuations in the market. Both options have advantages and disadvantages but basically those looking for a loan with no surprises will generally opt for f xed, while those who are keen for f exibility will opt for a variable product. Fixed products are more desirable in a market where it looks like interest rates will rise, as a borrower will have the security of knowing their home loan repayments won’t change, which also helps when working out the family budget. However, in a market such as the one we are experiencing where rates are low and unlikely to rise, variable loans tend to be more in demand. Often a variable interest rate loan will also include features such as an offset account, where you can withdraw cash from your loan, providing you still have enough money in there to cover the basic loan repayment amount. Fixed rate loans don’t generally allow for extra loan repayments, which is annoying if you come into some extra cash and want to pay it off your home loan. If rates start dropping after you’ve f xed your home loan interest rate, you can’t take advantage of the lower rate. However, if you don’t f x and rates rise, your home loan will start costing you more.

IN A FIX

If you’re currently on a variable loan and are thinking of f xing, it’s a good idea to consider the following before you lock it in: • If you think you might be selling the property before your loan period ends, you might be penalised for breaking your loan. Check with your provider what the rule is here. • If you’re keen to invest in other properties, having a f xed loan on your home may restrict you accessing the equity in it. • If you think you may be able to make extra repayments to reduce the term of the loan, or if you’re keen for an offset account where you can squirrel away some savings and offset the loan balance, you won’t be able to do so with a f xed rate loan. • It’s worth checking with your mortgage provider if you can split the loan, so that a portion of it is f xed, providing security, while the rest is variable, providing that f exibility. • If you still decide f xed is the way to go, really consider the length of the term. Will you still feel the same way in f ve years?

BUILDING APPROVALS HIGH The Housing Industry Association reports that the latest lending f gures show new home building activity is strong, and set to stay that way. During November 2014, the number of owner-occupier loans for the construction or purchase of new dwellings declined by 1.4 per cent. However, lending was 4.6 per cent higher than the same month of 2013. Furthermore, new home loans increased by 0.7 per cent in the three months to November and were 7.3 per cent higher than the [ 46 ] MY W EEKLY P RE VIE W \ J AN UARY 16, 20 1 5

46.indd 1

same period a year earlier. “Building approvals reached an all-time high during November, and today’s lending f gures add further to the evidence that Australia’s new home building industry will start 2015 on a strong footing,” says HIA senior economist Shane Garrett. He added a caution though: “The number of loans remains high, although there is little sign of further growth. “Fortunately, the f ow of loans for new home construction is very solid. The number

of new home construction loans in November was 7.6 per cent higher than a year ago.” Comparing the total number of owner occupier loans for new housing in November 2014 with November 2013 shows the strongest increases in the Northern Territory (+63.9 per cent) and in Tasmania (+14.3 per cent). Increases also occurred in Victoria (+3.3 per cent), Queensland (+1.6 per cent), and South Australia (+1.7 per cent). New loan volumes fell in New South Wales. M Y W EEK LY PREVIEW.C OM .A U

“Given the recent high number of dwelling approvals and commencements coupled with the high level of purchase activity from investors, we would anticipate that the rate of rental growth will remain soft throughout 2015,” Kusher added. “Rental market activity will largely be dependent on what takes place outside of the housing market as broader economic conditions remain mixed.” Still, the rental market remains tight for prospective tenants on the Coast. The REIQ’s Rental Survey, which was conducted at the end of September, showed vacancy rates are tight across the south-east of the state. REIQ CEO Antonia Mercorella said at the time that Queensland’s tourism centres were continuing to record tight rental conditions. “On the Sunshine Coast, the vacancy rate is at one per cent, the lowest of any major region in the state,” she said.

increasing by just 1.8 per cent over the past 12 months. The report shows that in terms of houses, over a three-month period to December rents rose in Brisbane by 2.5 per cent, and Sydney by one per cent. Melbourne recorded no change. In regards to unit rental, Hobart (at 1.8 per cent) and Brisbane (1.3 per cent) were the only capital cities to record growth to December 2014. Nationally, annual advertised rents are now 2.6 per cent higher than they were in December 2013 for both houses and units, while across the combined capital cities, house rents have risen by 1.2 per cent, compared to a stronger level of growth for unit rents which rose by 2.5 per cent. According to CoreLogic RP Data research analyst Cameron Kusher, rental rates across the combined capital cities have remained f at in 2014, which is the most subdued the rental market has been since the mid-2000s.

ARIES [Mar 21-Apr 20] With your constantly heated emotions, you can be a real hot-head. This week Mars links up with Neptune, so you’ll feel less frantic … but you’ll also feel much more confused. With Mercury reversing through your social zone – double-check all texts, tweets and emails.

TAURUS [Apr 21-May 21] Don’t get bogged down in a career-rut, bulls. Have you lost your passion? Are you overdue for a promotion? Is it time to look for a better job or even change vocation? If you are retired, how about taking up a volunteering opportunity with a worthy local cause?

GEMINI [May 22-Jun 21] Being a scatter-brained Gemini will just lead to problems this week. You’re in the mood to study, but avoid jumping to conclusions. Instead, think things through. Overseas friendships are favoured, as you expand your group to include an international new crowd.

CANCER [Jun 22-Jul 23] Close relationships are put under the microscope, and you’re keen to show your nearest and dearest how much you care. Avoid being overprotective, loved ones need room and there’s a big difference between loving and smothering.

LEO [Jul 24-Aug 23] Leos love to be leaders … but are you leading others (with passion and purpose) or just bossing them around? This week, if you proceed without considering others, then you’ll stir up unnecessary angst. So strive to accommodate the needs of those around you.

VIRGO [Aug 24-Sep 23] The new moon gets you thinking about rebooting your daily schedule, as you shake things up. Mercury turns retrograde mid-week, so avoid signing contracts and buying big ticket items (like a car, computer or holiday package) until after February 11.

LIBRA [Sep 24-Oct 23] Your social side is stimulated, as the new moon fires up your entertainment zone. But a relationship with a child or friend may go through a bumpy patch over the next three weeks, when retro Mercury confuses communication and heightens sensitivities.

SCORPIO [Oct 24-Nov 22] The new moon moves through your domestic zone so it’s time to spruce up Casa Scorpio as you clean, tidy, de-clutter and decorate home and hearth. But with retro Mercury also there, relations with relatives will be a minefield over the next three weeks.

SAGITTARIUS [Nov 23-Dec 21] Sagittarians are usually incredibly optimistic souls but with Saturn now moving slowly through your sign (until 2017), your life at the moment may not be as light-hearted as you’d like. That’s OK! The purpose of obstacles and challenges is to help you develop and mature.

CAPRICORN [Dec 22-Jan 20] Expect some confusion involving social media, siblings, neighbours or local community connections. Don’t accept other people’s version – take the time to check things. Friday’s sun/ Saturn link up is perfect for finalising jobs or making progress with personal projects.

AQUARIUS [Jan 21-Feb 19] The new moon’s in Aquarius, so you’ll feel inventive as you launch projects and plan new adventures. But, if someone approaches you with a deal that looks too good to be true, start running! If you let yourself be sweet-talked, you’ll just end up making a messy mistake.

PISCES [Feb 20-Mar 20] Confusion reigns supreme this week, as Mars and Neptune hook up in your sign … and then the new moon and retro Mercury stir up your selfsabotage zone. It will be easy to lose direction and be led up the primrose path by a persuasive person with dubious motives.

SURF REPORT with MWP’s man in the water

Righto then, get up early and score the rewards on offer! SW wind is on the cards for Saturday. Should be a lot of fun. Everywhere should be fun so spread out. Now I heard of a great bank near a certain lighthouse – find it and be rewarded. But only on a north or east swell. I think there was also a report of a shark swimming around Moffat Beach last week. If not tell all your friends and it will thin the crowd. Good luck for the weekend and get up early!

FISHING REPORT with Wayne Nilsson from Maroochydore Fishing World

ESTUARY: You’ll find mangrove jack and jew at the motorway bridge using live baits and mullet fillet - night tides are best. Flathead and large whiting are plentiful along the sand banks around Goat Island with yabbies and worms working well. Mud crabs and flathead are at Bli Bli. SURF: The Pincushion area is returning chopper tailor, jew and trevally using baby blue pilchards and mullet fillet. Sand whiting are moving in as the big tides wash in. North shore Maroochy is the best for flathead and shovel nosed sharks. OFFSHORE: When conditions allow, you’ll get kingies at The Blinker along with quality Spanish mackerel. You can get sweetlip, parrot, moses perch and mixed reef fish using pillies and local squid. Cobia are working bait from Murphy’s to The Gneerings. There’s plenty of black marlin in the area. Look for the bait schools. FRESHWATER: Borumba is returning a few saratoga and bass on slow trolled medium diver lures. Lake Macdonald has cod, bass and spangled perch on shrimps. Somerset Dam is working well with jigged lures. Remember the new laws for opera house pots start from February 1 to protect platypus. Check the DAFF web site for full information.
