etting paid to write is pretty cool, but getting paid to read, now there’s a job. And I speak from experience – about 10 years ago when working for a Sydney newspaper, I used to write book reviews. Heaven!

So as you can imagine, when I was compiling this week’s cover story, it certainly did not feel like work for me, and I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed working on it.

This week we’re bringing you our winter reading guide. I’ve been on the hunt for some new releases that have the industry talking, and I share a few of my favourite titles with you. We also have three local booksellers who share with us their picks of new releases and old favourites.

If you’re at a loss as to what to do this weekend, head out to your local bookseller and grab yourself some books. Winter provides a great excuse to go to bed at 8.30pm with your favourite novel, and let’s face it, there’s nothing on tellie you’ll miss out on.

Speaking of getting cosy, we have three pages of stylish buys for the home, starting on page 32.

In a change of pace, our My Weekly Preview fashion expert Di Mullins is already in a spring mood, as she shares her favourite warm-weather buys over in my style on page 30.

WINTER READING GUIDE Many people I know dread winter – without the beach to beckon they just don’t know what to do with themselves. But I love the colder months because it gives us all an excuse to spend time indoors curled up with a book. Need inspiration for winter reads to get you through to September?

The plan is to get stuck into People of the Book by Geraldine Brooks.

My friend Kerry has read the awardwinning novel six times (yes, six!), so I am an intrigued to f nd out what it is about this read that has her so hooked. So, what would I recommend to others? A few contemporary novels I have added to my favourites list in the past few years include the following:

I love American writer John Irving, and while Last Night in Twisted River isn’t quite up to the Irving classics such as The World According to Garp, A Prayer for Owen Meany or The Hotel New Hampshire, it is classic Irving – quirky, unpredictable, incredibly endearing and very cheeky.

by Hilary Mantel Hilary Mantel made history when she won her f rst Booker Prize for 2009’s Wolf Hall, then won again for the 2012 sequel, Bring Up the Bodies. They were gripping, meaty reads and I can’t wait for the third instalment of the Thomas Cromwell trilogy.

I haven’t seen the movie adaptation but can’t imagine it’s a patch on this beautiful novel.

Narrated by Death, it tells the story of a 10-year-old girl in Nazi Germany.

Again set in Germany at the time Hitler came to power, Funder’s 2012 Miles Franklin award-winner is a moving tale of love, betrayal and regret.

by Sue Monk Kidd Based on a true story, this book deals with issues of prejudice and human determination. A slave girl rises up above her shackled existence and two sisters rebel against their upbringing and become trailblazers in speaking out against slavery. They are also pioneers in feminism.

Goldfinch by Donna Tartt A gripping and challenging read about a boy who loses his mother but gains a rare painting. The resulting diff culties he endures in his life are at times harrowing but well worth the effort, as this novel is very well written.

Forgive Me, Leonard Peacock by Matthew Quick Engaging and confronting, this novel deals with issues

such as suicide but it does leave you with hope. This clever account of a life in turmoil has been written for adults and young adults.

Ronan’s Echo

by Joanne Van Os Set in contemporary Sydney, a forensic archaeologist learns about her family’s history through First World War evidence and uncovers complex secrets and relationships. An interesting insight into the diff culties arising in families touched by the tragedy of war.

by JD Salinger (1951) Through its memorable narrator/character Holden Caulf eld, this novel offers insights into the teenage mind. The book attracted enormous controversy, and even censorship, in its early years. Some see 16-year-old Holden as immature, lazy and unfocussed, while others f nd his loneliness, generosity and sensitivity endearing. His capacity to pick the ‘phony’ features of the adult world is reason to revisit this novel.

The Grapes of Wrath

by John Steinbeck (1939) This American classic came from Steinbeck’s 1938 visit to Californian camps where families had f ed the dustbowl droughts of Oklahoma. His experience of Americans starving to death gave us the

long-suffering Joad family and their desperate, forlornly optimistic trek across America.

All Quiet On The Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque (1929) Based on the German author’s experience in the First World War, this is a superb account of the horror, futility and comradeship of the trenches. Remarque comments in the preface that the novel “will try simply to tell of a generation of men who, even though they may have escaped its shells, were destroyed by the war”. It makes for sober reading.

F. Scott Fitzgerald went through several names for his magnum opus, including Trimalchio, Under the Red, White and Blue, and Gold-Hatted Gatsby. he probably got it right with The Great Gatsby

My Brother Jack by George Johnston (1964) This Australian novel is a semi-autobiographical tale of two brothers, one the typical Aussie bloke and the other, a more bookish intellectual. Set in Melbourne between the two World Wars, it covers the generation that was affected by the wars and the Great Depression. It eloquently examines the stereotypes and values that Australians are constantly reminded of.

Lord Of The Flies by William Golding (1954) This English writer gives a confronting reminder of how thin the veneer of civilisation is.

A group of schoolboys marooned on an island quickly divide into those who see a need for rules and morality as opposed to those who seek power at the expense of fairness and humanity. A cleverly written novel, which, if it were a true story, would be just another evening horror item in SBS’s World News.

Graeme Bowden, The BookShop at Caloundra Lost and Found by Brook Davis I was able to read this whimsical story in just three sittings but wanted it to go on for much longer. This is a terrif c tale with three main characters: Millie Bird, seven years old, obedient to a point, very wise but a bit preoccupied with dead things; Agatha Pantha, old, reclusive, cantankerous, very resourceful and delightful in a funny sort of way; and Karl the Touch Typist, very old, kind, lonely, brave and a bit resourceful. I knew this story had to end because I was

running out of pages but I was not expecting this ending – brilliant and perfect.

Mr Wigg by Inga Simpson Inga, I am pleased to say, is a Sunshine Coast author and she has written a wonderful novel. Mr Wigg has been widowed for a number of years but still lives as if Mrs Wigg were present and inf uencing his work in their garden of f owers, vegetables and his beloved fruit trees.

This is not an action story. It is just a lovely gentle story about family and the problems and joys that confront them all.

I Am Pilgrim by Terry Hayes This is 887 pages of just thrilling entertainment.

Given the background of the

author, which I did not know at the time, this was to be expected. Fast paced, lots of action and locations, twists in the plot and a range of characters for you to like or loath depending on your mood and where you are in the story. This story is very well written, very believable, and will keep you wondering until the very end. Brilliant.

To Be Sung Underwater

by Tom McNeal Tom McNeal has a beautiful style of writing. Easy to read, humorous, evocative and able to involve all your emotions. To be Sung Underwater is the story of a couple, Judith and Malcolm, both successful in their careers but perhaps growing apart individually. Judith

Joseph Heller’s Catch-22 started out with the title Catch-18.

When Heller’s agent asked him to change it, they threw around Catch-11, Catch-17 and Catch-14 before settling on the number 22

The Narrow Road to the Deep North by Richard Flanagan There have been many books written about life as a POW on the Thai-Burma railway but Richard felt he needed to write this book to better understand what his father went through during the war. Like many of the men who served during the Second World War, Richard’s father did not talk about his experiences. I think this book helps us to understand that generation better. It has been one of the most popular books on the market since Christmas.

She says one of this year’s additions includes the Upcycle your Coffee Cup initiative, where attendees can take their used coffee cup from the Expo to the Upcycling Station and have it f lled with soil and a free plant.

Traditionally, the Expo had many seniors visiting but in recent years young families were attending.

Queensland Garden Expo chairman and Birdwood Nursery owner Peter Young is looking forward to taking part in the Expo’s 30th anniversary.

Birdwood Nursery is one of the only exhibitors to have taken part in all 30 Queensland Garden Expos.

“As a manufacturer and wholesaler, this is the one

ust like any good garden, the Queensland Garden Expo has been nurtured from humble beginnings to a flourishing event.

What started with 30 exhibitors and 300 visitors 30 years ago has grown into a three-day event with more than 360 exhibitors and 115 demonstrations and is expected to attract more than 35,000 visitors.

Queensland Garden Expo event manager Marion Beazley says while the event has evolved signif cantly over the past three decades, the fundamental ingredients that helped to make the Expo so popular remained the same.

“We have always made a concerted effort to be ahead of and responsive to the latest trends in the gardening realm, which has been instrumental to our success,” Beazley says.

“In the early days, the event had a real focus on gardening in the sub-tropics. During periods of recession, the emphasis changed to creating a garden with Asian

opportunity we have each year to deal directly with the public and gain feedback about their likes and dislikes, as well as provide them with expert advice for growing citrus,” Young says. “We usually bring around 1500 plants to the Expo and f nd our new varieties are always a hot favourite year after year.

“In fact, attendees consistently cue around the block on day one of the event to be the f rst to get their hands on the hottest new plants available at the Expo.”

This year Birdwood Nursery will launch mini-grafted dwarf fruit trees at this year’s event that can be ‘multi-planted,’ meaning two or three different citrus varieties can

be planted in one pot or one spot in the garden.

Beazley says more than 55 nurseries will be at the Expo, selling in excess of 40,000 plants per day.

This year’s speakers include renowned gardeners such as Gardening Australia’s Costa Georgiadis, Jerry Coleby-Williams and Angus Steward, ABC Radio talkback hosts Annette McFarlane and Noel Burdette and horticultural experts Clair Levander and Claire Bickle.

Local gardeners joining the program include author Barb Wickes, Edible School Gardens founder Leonie Shanahan and landscaping and horticulture expert Sean Morrow.

The northern end of the Coast is gearing up for its annual celebration of the arts with the 10-day Noosa Long Weekend Festival set to kick off next week.

The festival showcases theatre, literature, music, dance, f lm, visual arts and thought-provoking forums.

This year’s event will bring together television personalities, industry experts and educators as part of the popular forum program.

Festival Director Ian Mackellar says the four forums hold something for everyone and are an important component of the Festival.

“The Festival Forums are a great way for audiences to engage with some of the country’s leading authorities on everything from architecture, bias in the Australian media, reinventing retirement, and taking the pulse on national politics,” Mackellar says.

Flannery will speak at the Innovation Centre auditorium from 6pm to 7.30pm on Thursday July 17.

Leading Australian writer, scientist and conservationist professor Tim Flannery will present a free public lecture at the University of the Sunshine Coast next week.

The lecture is part of USC’s 2014 Research Week, which takes place at Sippy Downs from July 14 to July 18.

Flannery, a former Australian of the Year and Australian Humanist of the Year, has named 25 living and 50 fossil mammal species and was described by David Attenborough as a great explorer.

Flannery’s pivotal book on global warming, The Weather Makers: How Man Is Changing the Climate and What It Means for Life on Earth, was a New York Times bestseller.

The key to a long-lasting home is a good skeleton.

When it comes to building a house good bone structure is fundamental to quality and longevity.

Morcraft Homes director Steve Morcombe says while most people spend time choosing the aesthetics and finishes of a house, it’s the things you can’t see that are the most important.

“You want to make sure you get the skeleton right so that when you put all the fine finishings in it will stand the test of time,” Morcombe says.

“Taking shortcuts and cutting

corners economically could save you $15,000 in the building process but it could cost you tens of thousands of dollars in years to come.”

The frame of your home is an important part of the skeleton and using properly treated timber will give you a 25-year warranty against termite infiltration.

While the Sunshine Coast is classified as a non-cyclonic zone the region is prone to severe storms with strong, gusty winds that can cause significant damage.

Gallipoli

If Gallipoli is the reason you are here, make sure you do it right and get a guide. While you can easily travel around the Gallipoli Peninsula and visit all the important sights, war cemeteries, and memorials yourself, to get a real feel for how the battles unfolded at Anzac Cove a century ago, a local guide adds all the necessary background. Most guided tours go for about four hours and every second is needed to really appreciate the remote beaches, the ridges, valleys, and trenches and tunnels hidden in the undulating wild scrub of the area where so many lost their lives. You can do a very long full-day tour from Istanbul or go to Canakkale and stay a night or two to enjoy the area.

While in Gallipoli, enjoy the seaside resort of Canakkale, where hourly ferries dart across the Dardenelles joining the European Gallipoli peninsula with the Turkish mainland in Asia Minor.

The remains of the city of Troy are a half-hour trip south from Canakkale. The giant wooden horse from the Hollywood movie starring Brad Pitt and Eric Bana is on the promenade at Canakkale, while there’s another at the ruins which is becoming a worthy tourist attraction. There is a lot more to Troy than the story from Homer’s Iliad and the trip is worth the effort.

Istanbul

Istanbul is your likely arrival destination in Turkey. You need at least four full days to truly appreciate all that is on offer in this ancient city straddling Europe and Asia. Once Byzantium, then Constantinople, the city has a history to rival Athens and Rome. The big sights include the Aya Sofya, once a Christian cathedral, then

a mosque and now a museum; the Blue Mosque, younger by some 1000 years; Topkapi Palace; the Roman Hippodrome; and the Grand Bazaar and Spice Market. Across the Golden Horn over the famous Galata Bridge is Karakoy and the hip shopping strip of Istiklal Caddesi topped by Taksim Square. Regular cruises take you up the Bosphorus from the Sea of Marmara to the Black Sea, showcasing the great palaces and grand houses along the waterway.

Sultanahmet

The most famous tourist area of Istanbul, many who visit the city don’t leave its environs. Apart from the Aya Sofya, Blue Mosque, and Hippodrome, it is walking distance to the giant covered Grand Bazaar and equally alluring Spice Market. The other major attractions in the area include the underground cistern, made famous in James Bond movies and Dan Brown novels, the massive Topkapi Palace where the Sultans ruled for 800 years, and the nearby Istanbul

Archaeological Museum, which holds some of the region’s amazing hidden history. This is the area to stay while visiting Istanbul because so much is so close. There are dozens of small hotels, hostels and pensions but the place to stay if you can afford it is the Four Seasons, a transformed prison now the ultimate in luxury with commanding views of the historic sights and the Bosphorus.

Ephesus/Kusadasi

One of Turkey’s must-see places, Ephesus drew the Apostle Paul in the years after the death of Christ and pilgrims still head there in droves. But now they come to see some of the best and biggest Roman ruins outside Italy. For fans of archaeology or Raiders of the Lost Ark, it’s a fascinating look at how the Romans lived. The remains of the Greek Temple of Artemis are nearby – one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World; and the supposed house where Christ’s mother Mary lived out her f nal days. There’s nowhere to stay in Ephesus itself but the beautiful beachside port of Kusadasi is a short drive away.

This central Turkish region features lunar-like landscape, ancient underground cities some 800 metres deep, towns carved into the sandstone mountains complete with churches and painted walls, and giant volcanic rock shapes carved over centuries by the wind and rain. Urgup and Goreme are the starting points for foot, bicycle, horse or bus tours. Some of the valleys and ravines look a bit like America’s Grand Canyon and are a hikers’ paradise.

The other great way to see this area is by hot-air balloon. Weather conditions are conducive year round and while views of the landscape from on high are incredible, the experience of f oating away as the sun rises is worth the cost alone.

STAYING THERE: Turkey offers a wide range of accommodation from backpacker hostels to top end. In the off season you can get good deals on the better hotels but in peak season be prepared to pay for quality.

Visit at least one mosque and one Turkish bath just for the experience. Drink the Turkish tea and coffee and eat the baklava and Turkish delight. They are good all over the country.

e believe the Australian dollar will soften over the remainder of 2014 due to weaker commodity prices, moderate Chinese growth and narrower interest rate differentials.

Our year-end target is $US0.89.

The transition back to trend growth in the Australian economy is proceeding slowly, and downside risks to growth exist via a larger than expected decline in mining capital investment and more intense f scal drag as the Federal Government tightens f scal policy.

A frothy housing market and improvement in the labour market are likely to keep the Reserve Bank steady on the cash rate. The RBA

has hinted that it is no longer forecasting a rise in unemployment, and the latest labour market data reinforces the trend of better employment outcomes.

We note there is some uncertainty as to how quickly and how far the US Federal Reserve will adjust its cash rate. Further improvement in American employment or an uptick in inf ation would represent clear headwinds for the Australian dollar/ American dollar exchange rate.

Iron ore prices are down 21 per cent since the start of the year in American dollar terms, with Australia’s terms of trade biased lower through 2014. Due to the difference between spot and rolling contract prices received by Australian exporters, weaker market commodity prices take time to be ref ected in trade outcomes. Nonetheless, the March trade data show the f rst signs that export values are starting to ref ect the signs of lower commodity prices, with Australia recording its lowest trade surplus for a year.

We expect the terms of trade to fall f ve per cent this year. Despite the fact the Australian dollar has diverged from high-frequency measures of commodity prices, the terms of trade should still be a signif cant anchor for Australia’s real exchange rate.

Recent Chinese purchasing managers index (PMI) data are consistent with stabilisation in the economy in the near term, but we expect the pace of recovery to be modest. Classic American pick-up truck arrives

A

ustralia has a new fully accredited car manufacturer.

With the Australian Design Rule (ADR) approval of a 2014 Ford Super Duty F-250 pick-up re-engineered by Performax International, the independent American vehicle importer is ready to produce and supply the popular series to the Australian market.

The f rst Performax-built right-hand-drive examples of America’s most popular pick-up are expected to be delivered in August at prices starting at less than $100,000.

ADR approval, meaning the F-series is ready to be road-registered in all Australian states and territories, completes a six-month development program led by former GM Holden and Ford Australia engineers at Performax’s Gympie manufacturing headquarters.

Performax International is the f rst manufacturer in Australia to be awarded full volume compliance for the F-series under a much more rigorous set of standards than previously required.

In addition to its annual output of around 320 RHD Chevrolet Silverado, Toyota Tundra and Dodge RAM pick-ups, Performax International will have the capacity to build up to 300 more Ford F-250s and F-350s in series.

The F-250 comes with a 6.7 litre V8 commonrail turbo diesel engine producing 294 kilowatts of power and a massive 1084 Newton metres of torque. Combined with six-speed automatic

transmission and on-the-f y four-wheel drive, this gives the vehicle a f ve-tonne towing capacity and exceptional all-terrain ability.

Performax general manager Glenn Soper says he expects healthy demand for the new Fords from business and private buyers.

“The F-250 is a magnif cent vehicle, with not only prodigious power but also supreme style and comfort for the driver and four passengers.

“We’re very happy with the mechanical and interior f nish quality of the unit we submitted for ADR approval,” Soper says.

He says Performax International will initially offer the Ford Super Duty crew-cabs for less than $100,000 and the top-spec Lariat, King Ranch and Platinum crew-cab for around $125,000 plus on-roads (prices are subject to f uctuations in exchange rates).

How to drive safely with pets The number of animals injured or killed falling from moving vehicles has prompted the state’s peak motoring body to warn motorists about the dangers of unrestrained pets when travelling in the car.

RACQ’s Renee Smith says motorists underestimate the risks even a small crash poses to the lives of their cats or dogs.

“The RSPCA f gures show every year around 5000 dogs are injured or killed in Australia as a result of falling from a moving vehicle,” Smith says.

While it’s not a legal requirement to restrain your pet while driving, she says motorists could be f ned if their dog or cat was in their lap or caused a distraction.

“Ultimately it’s about ensuring their wellbeing. “Motorists should treat the safety of their pets as

“If you’re driving at 60 kilometres per hour with an unrestrained 20-kilogram dog and you need to break suddenly, the impact for your dog if it collided with the driver, passenger or dashboard would be the same if they were dropped from a three-storey building.

On the move There’s no doubt that moving house is a stressful life experience – it involves time and money, is physically exhausting and most of all, a major disruption to your daily routine. TALK ABOUT THE MOVE Talking as a family about the move and the reasons behind it will help your children understand why their home is changing.

Take them to the new house before you move in so you can show them where they will be living (if the home is vacant, take a few boxes of clothes or toys each time). Also point out nearby parks, playgrounds or bikeways, as this will help get them excited about their new neighbourhood.

Ask a friend or family member to take your child out for the day – a trip to the movies, Aussie World or SEA LIFE will take their mind off the move (and keep them out of your hair).

If they can have a sleepover at a friend’s house while you f nish unpacking, even better.

BACK TO BASICS While your instinct may be to get the kitchen in

order f rst, try to get your child’s bedroom set up as soon as possible, so it is ready for them to come home to and explore.

Try to resist the urge to invest in new bedroom furniture or redecorate at this stage, unless your child is old enough to f nd the whole process exciting – you want their bedroom to look as familiar and reassuring as possible.

It’s also a very good idea to try to maintain your existing meal time and bedtime routines in the new house, so children can settle back into routine quickly.

STAY POSITIVE Try not to let the stress show too much – your child will pick up on your emotional state, and too much tension or anxiety can have an impact on how they feel about the move.

If you are positive about the change it will encourage your child to feel positive about it as well.

SURF REPORT with MWP’s man in the water

For me it is the best time of the year. Winter swells, sunny days and still wearing boardshorts! Ha, say Ha! Last Saturday it was fantastic fun up north as there were banks to be found everywhere, with great conditions. This week I watched a doco on fear and how people use their brains to overcome it.

Apparently some people have small brains (no sh#%!)

Some people have to re-train their brains in order to hold their breath longer. Now, I always thought it involved the size of one’s testicles! Especially when it is BIG. How wrong I was. Ha! Anyways, there should be some fun waves on Saturday with early next week jumping up with an attached SE wind. Be kind to your fellow surfers! Oh and maybe boogie boarders too.

FISHING REPORT with Wayne Nilsson from Maroochydore Fishing World

ESTUARY: Flathead will be on the drift from the Cod Hole to Chambers Island f icking plastics. Luderick have moved in the Maroochy with quality f sh taking weed in the usual haunts. Catch Bream and trevally at the Maroochy Bar with frogmouth pillies and prawns, and whiting along the Black Banks using yabbies.

SURF: Bream will be on the high tide in front of the Seabreeze Caravan Park using fowl gut and mullet f llet. Tailor is present right along the beach from Alex Headland to Pincushion with pillies and froggies best bait. Dart and whiting will be working low-tide gutters at North Shore with pippies great bait.

OFFSHORE: Snapper and spotted mackerel have been working bait from Currimundi to Coolum with better quality taking pillies at dawn and dusk, after berleying. Check the Barwon Banks for squire, pearlies and mixed reef f sh with squid and cut baits best.

FRESHWATER: Bjelke-Petersen and Boondooma are returning bass, golden perch on jigged plastics and sinking f ies with early morning best. Somerset is f ring for golden perch and bass using live shrimps and green prawns. Small dams like Borumba and Lake Macdonald are also worth a visit for Mary River cod and saratoga on a mix of f ies, lures and live baits.
