affodil Day, Hearing Awareness Week, Jeans for Genes Day and Breast Cancer Awareness Month – at any time of the year there is a day, week or month dedicated to a worthy cause. The ‘day’ that started it all was Red Nose Day. Held every year in June, Red Nose Day raises funds for SIDS and Kids, an organisation that helps save lives and support grieving families. This week we have dedicated our cover story to the day, and we look at the facts surrounding the mysterious illness that affects too many families. Please turn the page and f nd out more. In a change of pace this week we take a look at the Sunshine Coast Art Prize and meet some of the talented locals who are representing the region in the prestigious event. That story kicks off local news, which starts on page 16. Over in My Property Preview, Michael Matusik is putting the local property market under the microscope. The respected real estate expert has some timely advice for investors. Want to know what he has to say? Turn to page 40. Now, did you f ll out the readership survey that we have been running for the past couple of weeks? If you did and you want to know if you were one of f ve winners of the IGA Marketplace voucher, head over to our Classif eds section on page 54 to f nd out. We had an incredible response from our readers, and whether you have walked away with a voucher or not, thank you so much for taking the time to make our magazine a better read. Until next week! Ongoing research has saved thousands of babies’ lives, but the actual cause of SIDS remains a mystery. WORDS: Sam Walker

I

t’s hard to imagine anything more heartbreaking than putting your healthy baby to bed and the little one never wakes up. After more than 20 years of research, Sudden Infant Death Syndrome – or cot death as it was once known – remains a medical mystery. SIDS and Kids CEO and University of the Sunshine Coast adjunct professor Leanne Raven says SIDS usually affects infants aged up to 12 months. Less common, but equally as devastating is Sudden Unexpected Death in Childhood (SUDIC). “SIDS is still the highest cause of death in infants,” Raven says. SIDS is a classif cation, not a disease and it is a diagnosis of exclusion. “When a little baby dies and they can’t f nd any reason why it’s died then they classify it as SIDS,” Raven says. “It’s one of the worst things that can happen to any family and many families struggle as a result of it.” SUDI – the sudden and unexpected death of a baby – includes deaths as a result of SIDS, a fatal sleep accident or resulting from a serious illness or problem the baby was born with. It is a real fear for Alira Williams, whose 10-week-old daughter f ts several of the high-risk categories for SIDS and SUDI. The Caboolture mum says Alexis was born three weeks early, and weighing just under 2.5 kilograms, she was slightly below the average birth weight. She is also indigenous and Williams and her

[ 6 ] MY W EEKLY P RE VIE W \ J UN E 6, 2014

6.indd 1

partner both smoked. They are all factors that have been linked to higher rates of unexpected death in infants, so when Williams was presented with the opportunity of trialling the innovative Pepi-pod, as part of a program led by University of the Sunshine Coast professor Jeanine Young, she jumped at it. “Aboriginal and Torres strait Islander babies are 3.8 times more likely to die suddenly and unexpectedly than non-indigenous infants,”

“She’s just so precious,” Williams says of the daughter she has always wanted. “I was just that little bit more scared that something might happen to her.”

Young says. “And we know that infant deaths are associated with co-sleeping in hazardous circumstances, particularly for preterm or low-birth-weight babies. “Or where smoking, alcohol, drug use or unsafe sleep environments are present.”

It is Williams’ third child and her f rst girl and this time around she was more aware of SIDS and the risks and more concerned. “She’s just so precious,” Williams says of the daughter she has always wanted. “I was just that little bit more scared that something might happen to her.” The Pepi-pod program, which originated in New Zealand, is being delivered as a partnership between Apunipima Cape York Health Council, USC, Children’s Health Queensland and Change of our Children New Zealand. Young, who is also chair of the SIDS and Kids National Scientif c Advisory Group, says the pods enable safe sleeping places for babies who aren’t in cots. The program targets safe sleeping for families with known risk factors for SUDI. Williams described the Pepi-pod as a shallow plastic box with a f rm-f tting mattress. It f ts between parents in bed, enabling the baby to safely co-sleep while remaining in its own bedding and sleep area. But Williams says it f ts inside the cot or can be used by people who don’t own a cot and it is also transportable, so can be taken out of the home. She has been using it for about three weeks and so far loves it. The Pepi-pod won the Team Innovation Award at the HESTA Australia Nursing Awards last month and is a f nalist in the National Lead Clinicians Group 2014 Awards for Excellence to be announced next week. LIFE-SAVING RESEARCH The search for a cause of SIDS is ongoing. For SIDS and Kids Australia, Red Nose Day – which has been running since 1988 – is still its major fundraising event. The red noses are the hero product but other initiatives have been included and she is urging the community to get on board on June 27. “It’s about being silly for a serious cause,” says SIDS and Kids CEO Leanne Raven. “After all these years SIDS and Kids has invested $16 million in research and we are still investing in researching the cause. What that research has taught us is how to minimise the risk.” We know you should put your baby on its back to sleep and babies should sleep in their own uncluttered environment. The face and head should be uncovered and research has shown sharing a room with your baby for the f rst six to 12 months reduces the risk of SIDS. We also know it is safer to keep the baby in a smoke-free environment before and after birth and

RED NOSE DAY

The annual Red Nose Day fundraiser is a chance for people to “be silly for a serious cause”. This year SIDS and Kids is calling on Australians to ‘Say G’day the Red Nose Way’ by buying any Red Nose Day product or taking part in the Dare to Care project. This year a new range of Australian-themed products are available, including three plush toys inspired by Australian wildlife – Kevin the koala, Rooby the kangaroo and Charlie the snake. “Purchasing a Red Nose Day product is a small act that helps SIDS and Kids make a big difference in the Australian community,” says SIDS and Kids CEO, Leanne Raven. Dare to Care is a callout for people to take on a personal challenge while raising funds for Red Nose Day. It could be bungy jumping, taking part in a fun run or going to work in your undies. SIDS and Kids has also teamed up with four Australian and New Zealand fashion designers who have each created a limited-edition

where possible it is better to breastfeed your baby. “For the 20-odd years that we’ve been educating the community, we’ve got an 80 per cent decrease in the rate of Sudden Unexpected Death in Infancy,” Raven says. That means between 1989 and the latest f gures in 2012, the lives of 8000 babies have been saved due to the ongoing research. “But we still don’t know why it happens, why some little babies die from SIDS. There’s no one factor. It’s multi-factored. It crosses socio-economic and population groups within society. It can happen to any family.” “Through the research we are starting now to understand the physiology that might be behind what is happening,” Raven says.

T-shirt for the 2014 campaign. Proceeds from Red Nose Day will help provide bereavement support for Australian families, enable further research into areas such as stillbirth and SIDS and provide community education to reduce the risk of SIDS. The Red Nose Campaign runs throughout June, with National Red Nose Day taking place on Friday June 27. For more information visit sidsandkids.org

“One of the latest things is what might be happening to the brain stem of babies – how the serotonin might be impacted.” SIDS and Kids Australia is funding four research projects including professor Jeanine Young’s Pepi-pod program at USC. Another is a large international research project out of Harvard University to understand the mechanisms mediating sudden and unexpected death in childhood. The organisation is also funding the work of a PhD student at Monash University, who is looking at intra-uterine growth restriction and its possible impacts on the heart and circulation. And it is also supporting an Australian study investigating the incidence of sudden unexplained death or collapse in the f rst seven days of life. “We want to f nd out why (SIDS occurs) and we want to stop this from happening to other families,” Raven says. You can support SIDS and Kids ongoing research by taking part in any of a number of Red Nose Day initiatives.

COT-TO-BED SAFETY SIDS and Kids recently launched a brochure and mobile app, Cot-to-Bed Safety, designed to help parents know when to move their children from cots to beds. Too many babies and toddlers are sustaining injuries from falling out of cots and beds. During 2010-2011 more than 20,000 children aged zero to four years were hospitalised as a result of injury. Of those hospitalisations 879 were due to injuries from falls involving a type of bed product but many were related to cots. These injures may be due to not recognising the right time to move a baby or child out of a cot, or a baby or young child being placed too early in an adult bed or being placed in an unsafe sleeping environment. “The launch of the Cotto-Bed Safety brochure and mobile app is simply to present the Australian community with

Annabel’s Essential Guide to Feeding your Baby and Toddler

This website aims to push boundaries and make you think about some of the controversial issues around the globe. It gives a voice to artists who challenge traditional thought processes and encourages the general community to be more informed and engaged. It claims to publish “unf inching and provocative” perspectives and provide analysis and commentary on issues that often don’t make it to the mainstream media. Check it out at creativetimereports.org.

$7.49 This beautifully created app is a collection of 200 recipes by children’s food expert Annabel Karmel. This is a great app for parents who are looking for new ideas for providing nutritious meals for their children. The app contains step-by-step instructions, including handy cooking tips. Annabel’s Essential Guide to Feeding Your Baby and Toddler also contains My Planner, an ideal tool for busy parents enabling them to plan meals for the week ahead. A recent update also includes video content from The Essential Baby Care Guide, giving advice on general baby care such as ref ux. A young Australian designer has taken out a $10,000 prize for the e computer game controller he designed, but children with cerebral al palsy might be the real winners. The controller, designed by Max Hughes for the Young Australian Design Awards, enables children n to place their palms on a soccer ball-shaped controller and move e it around in a mount to navigate computer games. Generic hand-held controllers can prove challenging for cerebral bral palsy sufferers due to the high level of dexterity required. In his award application, Hughes said the controller can have e therapeutic benef ts by encouraging users to engage their dominant inant and non-dominant hands. “Using the controller with two hands may mean their sense of touch improves through a more immersive form of engagement compared to physical therapy,” he says. “The motion of the ‘dome’ is simple and very intuitive, and the majority of children pick up the unique way of controlling the game straight away.” AAP

Smartphones lose their glow as consumers hanker for simplicity of vintage mobile phones With smartphones a ubiquitous and let’s face it, highly addictive part of daily life for many people, a growing number of mobile phone users are going retro. They’re putting apps, video calls and emoticons on hold and

returning to old handsets like the Nokia 3310 or the Motorola StarTec 130, which just allow basic text messaging and phone calls. They f t in a pocket, have batteries that last all week and are almost indestructible, so perhaps it’s not

surprising old-school Nokias, Ericssons and Motorolas are making a comeback as consumers tire of fragile and overly-wired smartphones. Demand for them is growing with some of these second-hand models fetching prices as high as

$1500 each. For some users it is about being trendy and different to the pack. The ageing population is looking for simpler phones and others are just tired of the technology race between phone makers. AAP

SIX LOCAL FINALISTS IN SUNSHINE COAST ART PRIZE

ix Sunshine Coast artists have been named as finalists in the prestigious 2014 Sunshine Coast Art Prize. The six, from the length and breadth of the Coast, are among a total of 40 artists chosen as f nalists in the art prize, which draws entries from across the nation. Buderim’s Carley Cornelissen was thrilled when she learned she’d been selected from about 300 entries. “It’s pretty exciting,” Cornelissen says. “It’s def nitely the most prestigious prize that I’ve Sunshine Coast Art Prize 2D been a f nalist in. 2012 - Highly Commended “A lot of the artists that I Kate Bergin, Mr Percival, His Mobile look up to have won and been Phone and Other Stories, oil on canvas, a f nalist so to be part of that group 125 x 125 cm, 2012 is pretty exciting.” Cornelissen, 33, has been painting since she was 14 but has been taking it seriously and entering competitions for about three years. “It is pleasing to see there are six of the Coast’s f nest artists named as f nalists vying to win the 2014 Sunshine Coast Art Prize receiving a $15,000 cash prize. “I certainly do not envy this year’s judge’s role in critiquing and reviewing these works to determine the winner.” Miles Allen from Flaxton enters the competition every year and this is the second time he has been selected as a f nalist. “It’s good to be shown in a prestigious competition like this,” Allen says. “It raises my prof le and raises my ego as well.” Allen has been an artist for 15 years and has been full-time for the last three years. His work is usually abstract and geometrical. In recent years he has been using timber fruit and vegetable boxes sourced from Europe, which he cuts up, rearranges, paints and puts on colourful backgrounds. He’s been using the boxes since

Pam Walpole has also been a f nalist several times. “I think it puts you up there with your peers,” she says. “It’s quite an honour to be chosen because [the entrants] are from all over Australia.” The Sunshine Beach artist says her entry this year incorporates rusty nails and other materials used to create a landscape art work. All f nalists will be exhibited at the Caloundra Regional Gallery between August 27 and October 26.

feel right at home

As you already know, building a new home is one of the biggest investments you can make in a lifetime. Here’s how you can get it right the f rst time: • Check with your building designer and make sure you’ve got the orientation of your new home right. This will make or break the liveability of the home • Do you know what the best and most cost effective type of home construction suits your site…what’s best building methods for sloping sites, acreage, waterfront, knock-down/re-build or standard developer sites? While we are waiting for our new display home to be built we will be trialling a new concept of inviting you out to a Costa home in construction that is close to completion. New app to reduce food wastage on the Coast

Sourcing sustainable food could get a lot easier across the Sunshine Coast with a University of the Sunshine Coast student’s plans for a new mobile phone app. Mooloolah’s Rowan Schindler is developing the iForage app with the input of other USC students and staff. Schindler, who is in the f nal semester of his Arts degree, raised the concept at this month’s Startup Weekend at the Innovation Centre as part of his participation in a USC Business Entrepreneurship course. The 24-year-old is pursuing a

business plan for the app, which will identify the locations of free food across the Coast and offer advice on sustainable food consumption, such as edible plant species. “There are plenty of food resources that have been neglected or forgotten by people, Schindler says, listing wild mango and banana trees, berries, leftover seasonal produce at roadside giveaways, even certain f owers such as dandelions. He got the idea after doing a three-week sustainability project in the Canadian Arctic earlier this year and saw the resourcefulness of the Inuit community he lived in. “I came back to the Coast and thought, ‘There is food everywhere and we’re letting it go to waste’. “People are afraid because it’s not in a store. We need to rediscover a sustainable way of foraging for food like our ancestors did. The app will be among the bright ideas for sustainability being presented by USC researchers at the World Environment Day Festival at USC on Sunday.

COMMITMENT? Running a self-managed super fund (SMSF) gives you control over where your super money is invested. You will have access to a greater choice of investments compared to managed super funds, such as retail or industry funds. As a SMSF trustee, you can invest in direct property or shares… virtually any valuable asset. You can even purchase business property, such as an office, and use the property in your business. Before you get too excited about the positives of running a SMSF though, you need to ask yourself some key questions: • Are you into commitment? • Are you familiar with investing? • Is superannuation the right place for that particular asset to be purchased? • What is your tax rate outside of super? If you answer yes to all of those questions, chances are Self-Managed Super is for you. And if you put in the time to understand the rules and seek advice when necessary the prospect of complying with the superannuation laws should not deter you from running your own SMSF. We don’t sell SMSF’s – we provide financial advice only. Therefore our advice on the subject is impartial. If you would like a free consultation on the matter, please call our Buderim office on 5445 6044 to make an appointment.

WEATHER WISE WIN News weather presenter and meteorologist Hannah McEwan is feeling the cold. Last week I spent some time in southern Victoria where I grew up, and where – unlike the Sunshine Coast – it is actually freezing at this time of the year. Well, I thought so anyway. I couldn’t get enough layers on to be honest, but the rest of Melbourne was in shorts and T-shirts, talking over a latte about how balmy it was at 18 degrees. Meanwhile, they are looking at me, dressed in every item that f t into my suitcase, and you know they are thinking ‘typical Queenslander’. How quickly you acclimatise to the weather up here. But that doesn’t mean it does not get cold here. So for those who live on the Coast and for those just visiting, I am going to run through some of the facts and f gures about our winter weather on the Sunshine Coast, so you can be prepared for what is to come. Our coolest month is generally July, and over the winter months our average maximum temperature

is 21.3 degrees and our minimum is 10.3 degrees. The coldest day we have seen is a chilly 12.4 degrees on August 12, 2005, and the coolest temperature ever recorded at night at the airport was minus 0.7 degrees on July 20, 2007. So the next time someone from the south tells you that you don’t know what cold is, pull out these random facts, and I am sure they’ll be surprised. I know I am going to enjoy some cooler weather after a long hot summer.

USC implements water bottle ref lling system The University of the Sunshine Coast will soon introduce an innovative water bottle refilling system that is expected to dramatically reduce the amount of plastic waste across campus. As part of the initiative students and staff can buy chilled and f ltered water ref lls at a lower cost than bottled water. Vice-Chancellor professor Greg Hill says the move stemmed from a student’s suggestion, presented to the Sustainable Management Committee last year. “Each year we implement new initiatives and, whether it is biodegradable coffee cups, bike stations, nesting boxes for campus wildlife, a community garden project, our on-campus composting facility or our other sophisticated recycling systems, the new ideas often come from the USC community,” Hill says.

BOOZE VIDEO MISLEADING

H

ealth experts have called time on a slick booze industry video they say promotes binge drinking instead of discouraging it. The industry body DrinkWise says the video is designed to appeal to young people and has had positive results. But the experts say it is more likely to boost sales than encourage moderation. What’s worse, it’s online and is likely to be watched by children, they write in a letter in the Medical Journal of Australia. The video, titled How to Drink Properly, urges teenagers and young adults to f nd their “realm of drinking excellence, but warns that only amateurs lose control. It’s clever, but it’s duplicitous, says Professor Simone Pettigrew, who wrote the letter with public health campaigner Professor Mike Daube. “What DrinkWise is touting as being helpful is just reinforcing their sales, Pettigrew says. A small study by Pettigrew and her team at Curtin University shows some young people feel an urge to drink after seeing the video. Around two-thirds of the 40 people in the study liked the cartoon format, humour and swearing, according to Pettigrew. “They get the message that they should not drink too much, but they don’t know what too much means, she says. “The video fails to tell them

more than four drinks is binge drinking. They think 10 beers is OK. DrinkWise CEO John Scott says the video is achieving its aims. “We are weeks into a three-year campaign, but we are conf dent we have hit the right mark, he says. He says a DrinkWise study of more than 750 young people had changed their behaviour after seeing the video. “It shows the campaign is doing the right things, he says. “We are speaking to young people for the f rst time in a language in which they can start to understand the moderation message. “A sample of 40 people in comparison to the DrinkWise sample of 750 is not a way to refute the early success of our campaign. AAP

Republican spirit alive Australia’s republican movement is in a lull, but supporters of the cause should not become complacent, says shadow attorney-general Mark Dreyfus. In his address to an Australian Republican Movement forum, Dreyfus says Prime Minister Tony Abbott’s resurrection of knights and dames is absurd. “Times are dark for republicans, Dreyfus said in his speech earlier this week. “Tony Abbott’s full-blooded monarchism might be half a century out of date, but we must not be lulled into complacency. How could any Australian in 2014 honestly argue for the place of the British monarchy in our modern society? Dreyfus says Britishness is no

Mark Dreyfus longer the def ning feature of the Australian national identity, adding that waves of migrants from different cultures and closer economic and cultural ties with our region had fundamentally changed the nation. However, a push for a republic was not about discarding the British aspect of Australia’s identity, but forging a new identity all Australians could engage in. AAP

Baby boomers fall short on superannuation The majority of Australian baby boomers don’t have enough superannuation for a comfortable retirement and believe they will have to rely on the age pension, a new study says. An even greater number of over-50s have no idea how much money they will need post-work, according to the research paper released on Monday by REST Industry Super. A couple needs a combined superannuation balance of $510,000 and an individual needs $430,000, says the Association of Superannuation Funds of Australia Ltd. The REST study of workers aged over 50 found 64 per cent of respondents thought they would need the age pension to supplement their superannuation. “This group who started their working lives before the advent of compulsory superannuation are trapped between a rock and a hard place, REST boss Damian Hill says. Almost half (45 per cent) of respondents said they are concerned by constant changes to superannuation laws. AAP

BLONDE SWITCH FOUND

Comic book seller set to make a super sum

hether you are born blonde or brunette depends on a single letter of the genetic code, scientists have learned. The DNA switch f ne-tunes the activity of a gene known to be linked to hair colour. Changing just one of its chemical components – a single genetic code element – is enough to generate blonde hair. “This particular genetic variation in humans is associated with blonde hair, but it isn’t associated with eye colour or other pigmentation traits,” says lead researcher Professor David Kingsley, from Stanford University in the US. “The specif city of the switch shows exactly how independent colour changes can be encoded to produce specif c traits in humans.” Experiments with mice showed that the ‘blonde’ switch caused animals to be born with light, golden-brown fur. The switch alters activity of a gene called Kit ligand, that was already known to

A rare collection of first-edition comic books featuring iconic heroes Superman, Batman and Flash are to be auctioned in the US. Kentucky insurance executive John Wise decided it was time to sell the collection he’s been accumulating over three decades, revisiting a childhood pastime that he picked up again in the 1980s after he became established in his career. “I think it’s a good timing for the market, and good timing for me at age 62,” says Wise. “It’s not like I’m not going to take them with me.” The comic books sold for as little as 10 cents when they were published, many in the late 1930s and 1940s. Wise is auctioning about 175 comics individually, and online bidders have already committed about a half-million dollars to the auction, which ends Tuesday. Among the offerings is a pristine issue of Flash Comics No. 1 from

be associated with hair colour. “This is a good example of how f ne-tuned regulatory differences may be to produce different traits,” says Kingsley, whose research appears in the journal Nature Genetics. “The genetic mechanism that controls blonde hair doesn’t alter the biology of any other part of the body. It’s a good example of a trait that’s skin deep – and only skin deep.”

1940, which tells the story of how college student Jay Garrick gained super-human speed by inhaling fumes in a lab accident. “This copy is in incredible high-grade condition and is the second-best copy known to exist,” comic book expert Vincent Zurzolo said in an email message. Zurzulo is co-owner of New York-based ComicConnect.com, the online auction house that is selling Wise’s collection. Wise f rst started collecting comics at age 12, and sold his f rst collection to buy a car as a teenager. He picked up the hobby again later in life, and started frequenting Comic-Con in San Diego, where he eventually bought a second home. Wise is also selling a copy of Action Comics No. 1, which is the debut of Superman and is considered the birth of the comic book super hero. A well-preserved copy of the 1938 comic sold for a record $US2.1 million in 2011.

THE WEEK THAT WAS TOP BULLS

EQUITIES STRATEGY – HOLDING STEADY

Troy Derwin is from Ord Minnett in Buderim

M

ost perplexing and challenging for market participants this year have been the tight trading ranges and reduced volatility in bond and equity markets. Low volatility is, in principle, good for markets and economies as it boosts conf dence and investment. All policy makers have an objective to reduce uncertainty, and to maximise transparency and predictability. Low volatility, however, has some pitfalls. Most importantly, it creates moral hazard as it eliminates caution and thus creates excess risk-taking and leverage. In addition, low volatility amid directionless markets

STAGE 2 NOW SELLING

impact trading and liquidity. Most pertinent to markets is that low volatility should not be mistaken for low risk. Markets can move in tight trading ranges if the shocks hitting them neatly offset each other, and that is probably what has happened this year. The continued depressed yield on cash remains a powerful stimulant for f nancial assets, but economic activity has generally disappointed so far this year. By our estimates, March-quarter global economic growth will be around two per cent, well down on the three per cent expected at the start of the year. We have kept our growth projections for the rest of the year largely unchanged, balancing two propositions. The f rst is the possibility that March-quarter weakness was attributable to temporary factors, which suggests upside from the current quarter onwards. Alternatively, there is the possibility that something is more fundamentally wrong in the world

economy. We support the f rst proposition, but acknowledge economic risks exist. Similarly, on the monetary policy side, the lack of any change in the low interest rate policy of major developed markets has depressed volatility in global bond markets and currencies. This low policy volatility is not the same as low policy risk. A return of volatility, resulting from a change in the current balance between bearish and bullish forces, is not automatically a negative for investment markets. Our preferred scenario remains an end to economic growth downgrades and reduced geopolitical risk, which would boost equity prices and push up bond yields. It should be noted, however, that volatility rarely stays this low for long. Troy Derwin is an authorised representative (no 435773) of Ord Minnett Ltd, AFS licence 237121. be prepared SAVE TIME AND MONEY, AND GET THE MOST OUT OF YOUR NEXT HOLIDAY, WITH THESE TOP TRAVEL TIPS. Upgrade me Some airlines have unusual ways that allow you to snare an upgrade. Virgin Australia, for instance, has a request system where you can make an offer for the chance to upgrade to premium economy or business class. Go to the UpgradeMe Premium Bid section of the site and check if your f ight is eligible by entering your booking reference. If it is, put in the amount you’re willing to pay to upgrade, enter your payment card details to allow payment if your offer is successful and you will be emailed about the success of your offer before your departure.

Take the flexible fare It may be worth paying more for the f exible fare if you think your f ight plans might change. If you’re going for the cheapest fare, check the f ne detail when you book so you know how much a change of date or cancellation will cost you.

Don’t lose your bed

Many credit cards offer free travel insurance, so before taking out insurance make sure that you don’t already have it for free.

If you’re in a country where you don’t know the language, make sure you pick up the hotel’s business card before stepping out. Showing the card to a taxi driver can also avoid confusion when communicating your hotel’s address.

Nab the best seat

Get a free upgrade

Before you choose your seat on the plane check out seatguru.com. On the site you put in your f ight

If you book your hotel through certain booking websites, such as luxury hotel booking site

kiwicollection.com, you might score yourself a free upgrade. Kiwicollection.com has a collection of hotels that carry a ‘free perk symbol’, which means that you’re likely to receive extras, such as free upgrades (when available), free Wi-Fi, welcome gifts or early check-in and late check-out. But before you book a hotel on a booking website make sure you check the hotel’s website and do a price comparison.

Pick the free Wi-Fi If you are undecided between two hotels go for the one with free internet access, this can save you a wad of money over several days.

Eat like a king (early) Many f ne dining restaurants throughout the world have an early bird menu, which offer excellent value. The Rockpool in Sydney, for instance, currently has an early offer where diners arrive between 6pm and 6.30pm and stay for two hours. Two courses cost $95 per person, compared to the usual $145. AAP

BOOMING BUILDING HIRE

Business takes to new heights East Coast Shades owners Cathy and David Morrison have a new spring in their step, as they plan to open the Coast’s first trampoline park. The Big Boing Indoor Trampoline Park is set to open its doors in September, and the Morrisons hope it will prove popular with locals and visitors to the region. The indoor park will be air-conditioned and will feature more than 1000 square metres of interconnecting trampolines. It will also host dodgeball competitions, basketball slam dunking, martial arts and group f tness classes, parties and work bonding sessions. The Morrisons say the park will also provide work for around 30 locals.

It’s hard to comprehend, however, just imagine the opportunities for this hire business with billions of $$ in construction underway within walking distance of their central location. Kawana Equipment Hire has been established for 21 yrs, they are renowned for exceptional service and a diverse range of quality, commercial grade equipment. They have it all including toilets, dingoes, scaffolding, scissor lifts, fencing, generators and much more. With loyal staff in place this 5½ ½ day p/wk business enjoys a fantastic cashflow whilst showing enviable profits. Price includes impressive inventory and vehicles.

James Love was recently given only six months to live after he was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour. James’ parents Deborah and Paul, found hope when world-renowned neurosurgeon Charlie Teo performed an 8 hour operation removing 90-95% of the tumour. Paul and Deborah’s last advice from Dr Charles Teo was ‘go to Germany’. The reason being is James can continue his primary care to follow on from the seven weeks of chemotherapy and radiation he has just completed. Germany uses newer treatments like immunotherapy together with complementary therapies which can be very effective and importantly non-toxic.All these advanced therapies have the approval of Germany’s health ministry, which unfortunately are not yet available in Australia. WHAT’S ON Grab a gin mojito

Friday June 6 The classic gin and tonic is enjoying a resurgence in Australia, according to research by Roy Morgan. The number of Aussies who had consumed gin in a four-week period increased by 50 per cent from 2009 to 2013, with women and young socials the most likely to opt for a gin-based beverage. If you feel like something more adventurous than the traditional G&T, swap the usual rum for a clean, crisp gin mojito. To make one, smash a mint sprig, and place it and 15ml each of lemon juice and sugar syrup in a mixing glass. Splash in 50ml of gin, give it a stir and then pour into a highball with crushed ice. Top up with good-quality soda water and garnish with lime and more mint.

Automatic attraction WORDS Peter Atkinson

T

he irony of this review is the people most interested in the car are probably the ones least interested in reading about it. Such is the cult following of Subaru’s WRX, its army of admirers know all about this new model – and knew about it long before the car arrived in Australia. When one WRX devotee learned I was driving the latest version of this all-wheel-drive hot-rod, he quoted the engine’s upgraded power output, the changes the car had undergone and most importantly, that the WRX is being offered with an automatic transmission for the f rst time in a decade. Few cars engender such fanatical loyalty among those who own them, as well as those who wish they did. So let’s forget about preaching to the converted. For the rest of the Australian population, the new Subaru WRX is, in a word, terrif c. It’s always been a fast car – and one with an intoxicating blend of

punishing acceleration, dogged all-wheel-drive grip and enough equipment to justify its reasonably accessible price tag. This fourth-generation ‘Rex’ is all of those things. And more. But less. More power. More handling. And more equipment. But less thirsty. And, amazingly, less expensive. In fact, Subaru claims its $38,990 entry-level price is less than when the car was f rst launched 20 years ago – and $1000 cheaper than the model it replaces. It is the fourth all-new version of the WRX (roughly translated it stands for the World Rally Championship where the car f rst

HONDA

made its reputation) – although there have been countless updates, tweaks and f ne-tunes on a virtually annual basis since the car was unveiled in 1994. Each successive model has, almost without exception, been more impressive in one way or another than the one it replaced. But it’s fair to say no WRX has impressed me more than this one. Why? Well, there’s that automatic transmission. While the die-hard devotees might be sceptical it does in fact enhance rather than impede the car’s legendary performance. It uses a version of Subaru’s seamless, Lineartronic constantlyvariable (CVT) gearbox, although one that seems to have been perfectly tailored to the WRX’s turbo-charged powerplant. It takes full advantage of the new engine’s low-down torque, yet still allows you to access that high-rev range when fully motoring – a more ref ned, more cultured driving

experience than previous models. Transmission response can be adjusted via the Si-Drive system, while paddle-shifters allow even greater driver involvement. We drove the CVT and manual versions of the ‘Rex’ and came away slightly more impressed with the car. It’s probably not quite as quick or explosive as the manual, but its ease of driving far outweighs any performance sacrif ce and it’s substantially more fuel eff cient. The manual, mind you, enjoys the six-speed short-throw gearbox previously found in the Sti version – although a particularly heavy clutch pedal detracts slightly from the driving experience. It is lethally quick, though, particularly in the mid-range where the engine’s torque is seen to full advantage. What the new WRX doesn’t have is a hatchback version. That’s the opposite of a few years ago, when a softer, cuddlier WRX was continued over>

launched in hatchback-only form, angering loyal supporters for whom a boot and massive rear spoiler is as much a part of this car as the chugchug note of the famous Boxer engine. The spoiler, incidentally, is much smaller than we’re used to.

You’ll need the STI to get the full rear-wing treatment. Not to worry, though, because that four-cylinder Boxer engine remains and is substantially better than ever. It returns to a 2-litre capacity (the previous model was 2.5-litres) but delivers marginally more power while reducing fuel consumption by 11 per cent and emissions by 14 per cent.

It’s interesting to note that the WRX-STi – the Subaru Technica International tweaked version of the Rex – created a stir when it edged over the 200 kilowatt power mark a few years back. This latest garden variety Rex almost does the same at 197 kilowatts, complemented by 350 Newton metres of torque. But it’s more the way it delivers its performance that impresses. The engine isn’t nearly as peaky as models past. Its acceleration is still exhilarating but in a more controlled, linear way. The punch from the 2-litre four is brutal, almost regardless of when it’s applied. At low revs the torque kicks in to hurl the car forward then, as the revs rise and that engine note begins to inf ltrate the cabin, it’s an entirely different, more violent sensation. It’s quieter than ever – almost disappointingly so for fans of that familiar exhaust burble. But it’s by far the most plush and ref ned WRX we’ve driven – quieter, more comprehensively equipped (impressive soft-touch surfaces, Fujitsu audio, centre-mounted multi-function display, more legroom and boot space).

We tested the basic WRX and Premium models. We had few quibbles, although we found the Bluetooth connectivity for mobile devices tricky to activate and, in our case, it had to be re-connected every time you got back in the car. The symmetrical all-wheel-drive has been substantially tweaked, with torque vectoring enhancing power delivery to the wheels with the most grip. Brakes have been upgraded as well, and seven airbags contribute to its f ve-star safety rating. Clearly, this new WRX is making its mark. Last month, it achieved an all-time sales record for the model in Australia. Some variants are on a threemonth waiting list. Presumably the army of WRX disciples approve. As for the WRX-loving devotee? Well, after I gave him a quick burst in the CVT automatic version, he delivered an overwhelmingly positive verdict: “Awesome.” “You’d have to seriously think about buying that ahead of the manual.” Mind you, he probably knew that already.

SUBARU WRX Details: Four-door, f ve-seat compact sports sedan with four-cylinder turbo-charged engine and choice of six-speed manual or constantly variable automatic transmission. Tech stuff: 2-litre, four-cylinder horizontally-opposed ‘Boxer’ engine with twin-scroll turbocharger, double overhead camshaft and direct injection produces 197kW at 5600rpm, 350Nm at 2400-5200rpm; six-speed manual or Lineartronic constantly variable transmission with wheel-mounted paddle shifters; permanent symmetrica all-wheel-drive with Limited Slip Centre Differential or Variable Torque Distribution (CVT model). Features: Airbags, Vehicle Dynamics Control, ABS, electric windows and mirrors, premium audio with Bluetooth connectivity; sports seats and multifunction steering wheel, 4.3-inch LCD multi-information display, automatic headlights. Performance: 0-100km/h in six seconds. THIRST: 9.2L/100km (manual model); 8.6L/100km (CVT). Verdict: Bound to win over a whole new group of WRX devotees. Bottom line: From $38,990; Lineartronic (as tested) $40,990; Premium models add $5000.

GOOGLE GETS INTO CAR MAKING

G

oogle has designed a self-driving car and plans to build up to 100 prototypes to begin testing this year. The California-based technology company has been testing self-driving vehicles for some time, but this announcement is signif cant as it conf rms that Google will build its own cars as opposed to f tting technology to existing models. In previous trials, sensors and computers were used in existing car models, but Google has now unveiled its own vehicle prototype. Chris Urmson, director of the self-driving car project, says, “We’re now exploring what fully self-driving vehicles would look like by building some prototypes; they’ll be designed to operate safely and autonomously without requiring human intervention. They won’t have a steering wheel, accelerator pedal or brake pedal … because they don’t need them. Our software and sensors do all the work. “The vehicles will be very basic – we want to learn from them and adapt them as quickly as possible – but they will take you where you want to go at the push of a button. And that’s an important step towards improving road safety and transforming mobility for millions of people.”

This announcement is signif cant as it conf rms that Google will build its own cars as opposed to f tting technology to existing models AAP

A recent update on the company’s off cial blog announced that more than 1,126,300 kilometres had been driven in initial testing using vehicles from other manufacturers such as Toyota, with the cars now on the streets of California. It is one of a

series of notable projects the company has in development, including installing Wi-Fi in weather balloons to provide internet access to all parts of the world, and a build-it-yourself smartphone known as Project Ara.

[ Google has said the car prototypes will be basic to begin with, “designed for learning, not luxury”, containing just two seats, storage space and stop and go buttons. Google also conf rmed the car would be limited to 40 kilometres per hour, and would feature a screen to display the route you travel. Google co-founder Sergey Brin says, “The project is about changing the world for people who are not well-served by transportation today. The main reason we wanted to develop this prototype vehicle is that we can do a better job than we can do with an existing vehicle. “The experience feels different. You’re just sitting there, no steering wheel, no pedals – for me it was very relaxing. In about 10 seconds after getting in, I forgot I was there. It reminded me of catching a chairlift by yourself, a bit of solitude I found really enjoyable. But the big one is really in safety.” Brin is also keen to point out that while Google believes it can innovate in the transport industry, it is not looking to kill off normal cars. “I’m not advocating we get rid of all cars that don’t drive themselves, though some features we’ve developed may be useful for those cars,” he says. “There is a mix of what people want. I expect people will use a mix – some will want their own car to drive, and sometimes they’ll choose to use a self-driving car.”

The wider motoring industry is intrigued by what Google has to offer, but others are also keen to see better infrastructure put in place to ensure that the technology has every chance to succeed. A spokesman for the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders says, “Moving to fully autonomous vehicles is technologically possible thanks to the signif cant investments made by vehicle manufacturers. “Clearly, legislation and consumer acceptance will determine the scale and speed of these innovations appearing on our roads. Ultimately, semi- or fully-autonomous vehicles could lead to safer, more fuel eff cient driving as cars, vans and trucks interact with each other and the road environment to keep traff c f owing at safe and appropriate speeds. “However, there needs to be a joined-up approach between vehicle manufacturers, road planners, regulators and road users before this will become widespread. Regulators should look to implement a global framework that supports an integrated approach where driver behaviour and vehicle technology play an important role together.” Google has said it will now spend the “next couple of years” developing the car, with a fullscale pilot scheme planned for California at some point in the future. Mr Bean’s on the scene British actor Rowan Atkinson rushed to the aid of a car crash victim following a nasty accident in Italy. The Mr Bean star, who was involved in a car crash himself in 2011, was f rst on the scene last week after a US businessman lost control of his vehicle and smashed into a tree on a steep grassy bank. They had both been driving in a convoy with other motoring enthusiasts in sports cars when the accident occurred. Atkinson rushed to help the driver as Italian police and f ref ghters arrived on the scene. The comedian was later pictured helping the clean-up effort by picking up wreckage from the slope. The victim was f own to a hospital in Pisa with non-lifethreatening injuries. Atkinson was hospitalised with minor injuries in 2011 after he lost control of his sports car and smashed into a tree and a lamp post in England. AAP

LOOK WHO’S TALKING

Ford’s new V2V technology is being showcased at Computex this week

L

ike mobile phones, cars are getting smarter. Soon, it seems they will be able talk to each other. Not in the conversational way we communicate, but in a sci-f , high-tech messaging system that will help prevent accidents. Ford is showcasing two specially equipped Ford Kugas at Computex Taipei in Taiwan this week featuring its experimental vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) technology for the f rst time in Asia Pacif c. It marks Ford’s ongoing commitment to intelligent cars.

Anniversary edition Fiat rockets into Australia

“The V2V technology we will be showing at Computex is just one of the many ways Ford is leading high-tech automotive research and development,” says Trevor Worthington, vice president, product development, Ford Asia Pacif c. “At Computex, we are pleased to be showcasing technologies which are available today, as well as our innovative, forward-thinking technologies still in the development phase.” In addition to the live V2V demonstration, Ford will also unveil the all-new Mustang for the f rst time in Taiwan, along with its line-up of cutting-edge technologies, including demo stations for its SYNC and Ford AppLink in-car connectivity systems. Featuring a sleek new design, the new Mustang will be the smartest ever, coming fully equipped with a range of Ford’s smart technologies, including SYNC, MyKey and Intelligent Access.

Fiat Australia’s 50th Anniversary model – the Abarth 595 – is coming to Australia. But numbers are limited. Just 50 examples of the car, which Fiat claims is the fastest and most powerful 595 so far, have been secured for Australia with prices to start at $45,000. “Without doubt the Abarth 595 is an inspirational car for enthusiasts and we’re delighted to have secured 56 ‘50th Anniversary’ models for Australian customers,” says Veronica Johns, president and CEO of Fiat Chrysler Australia. “We’re sure some will be snapped up by collectors but equally, those with a passion for iconic highperformance Italian cars will f nd the Abarth 595 ‘50th Anniversary’ comprehensively equipped and a delight to drive every day.” Power comes from Fiat’s turbocharged, four-cylinder 1.4-litre T-Jet which has been boosted to 132 kilowatts and 250 Newton metres. Drive is to the front wheels via an electronically actuated ‘Abarth Competizione’ f ve-speed mechanical

gearbox with steering wheel paddles to enhance the engine. With a top speed of 225 kilometres per hour and sprinting from zero to 100 kilometres per hour in less than seven seconds, the Abarth 595 ‘50th Anniversary’ is the fastest and most powerful 595 ever. Red leather sports seats with white inserts and red stitching, combined with the dashboard, are a modern reinterpretation of the original car. The historical logo adorns both the black leather (with red inserts) steering wheel and kick plates, giving the Abarth 595 ‘50th Anniversary’ a timeless modernity. There’s a lot to celebrate in this anniversary edition.

THE RIGHT MIX Located just a short distance to the largest medical precinct in Australia, Forest Views is a boutique development of 25 contemporary architect-designed two- and three-bedroom townhouses with a resort-style pool and barbecue area plus a boutique retail complex with five commercial outlets, which are to be leased. The development combines high rental demand, excellent rental returns, a rental guarantee from the developer, a six-year builder’s guarantee and low body corporate fee. More than 60 per cent of this boutique townhouse development has already been sold, and the marketers believe interest will be high. Display units are now available for viewing. Luxuriously appointed throughout, these spacious townhouses feature inclusions such as stone benchtops, air-conditioning, gas cooktop, Omega appliances and blinds throughout. The three-bedroom homes feature a double car garage and spacious courtyard area, while the two-bedroom homes come with single car garaging, two separate living areas and a dedicated study alcove. The townhouses are marketed by Russel Dell from Buderim’s One Agency. Prices start at $389,000, which make great entrylevel buying for investors and owner-occupiers.

LOOKING GOOD Property expert Michael Matusik took to his Matusik Missive blog last week to talk about what’s ahead for the Sunshine Coast property market. Read his summary below, and for more in-depth property outlook and analysis go to matusikmissive.com.au.

I

t has been a long time coming. The Sunshine Coast, unlike other markets across south-east Queensland during the previous market upturn, didn’t necessarily overheat property value-wise; but instead, it was more hit by a collapse in tourism and retail spending, plus new residential development. These three industry types were, historically, some of the major employers on the Sunshine Coast. The Sunshine Coast, up until recent years, has suffered from a lack of ‘employment depth’.

mortgage rates rise over seven per cent. Another big plus to the Sunshine Coast property cycle this time around is the undersupply of new stock; and also the very tight local rental market. The supply of property for rent is extremely tight. The Sunshine Coast now has – and this might surprise many – a relatively young demographic prof le. Whilst it does have a growing retirement and age-care related market, these two buying

segments are quite small when compared to the size and growth expected in the young renter and f rst home buyer markets. Furthermore, the downsizing market is expected to contract in size and impact over the next 10 years. These demographic shifts will see the need for more affordable property and more accommodation for a young rental market. This will fuel the need for more one- and two-bedroom apartments.

GAME CHANGER

However, the new infrastructure being delivered around the Kawana area – namely the hospital and associated uses – is a ‘game changer’ adding employment strength to the Sunshine Coast, whilst also helping to reduce the cyclical nature of its employment. Today, close to 165,000 people are employed on the Sunshine Coast. Over the past 12 months, 14,000 new jobs were created. A total of 32,000 new jobs are expected in the Kawana area on infrastructure and housing build-out. In 2001, unemployment on the Sunshine Coast was more than 11 per cent. Today, it is less than the Queensland average. The Sunshine Coast, in short, is creating new jobs. And with this essential change comes an increase in population growth, a rise in dwelling starts, more sales, a lift in rents and a return to price growth.

PRICE GROWTH & DEMAND

Our borrowing capacity analysis suggest once interest rates normalise (increase) in coming years, dwelling appreciation on the Coast will slow down, but end prices are unlikely to drop unless variable [ 40 ] MY W EEKLY P RE VIE W \ J UN E 6, 2014

PRICE POINTS

The key thing here is affordability. Investors should look to buy property priced largely under $400,000 for second-hand stock; under $500,000 for new apartments and the like; and under $600,000 for new house and land. At these price points, property should be met with consistent rental demand and attract owner-resident buyers on resale. The Sunshine Coast property play moving forward is more about jobs and buying what I call “capital city stock”, rather than lifestyle coastal property. So beachfront, top-end, luxury homes might not make the best investment on the Sunshine Coast for the next cycle or two – the underlying demographics don’t really support such. Our modelling suggests a

growing need for more residential construction on the Sunshine Coast; this will further help increase employment. Yet in contrast, given the polarisation of the demographics – young markets and older ones – our Property Pulse reading suggests that the Sunshine Coast’s net housing demand will settle back (at a high level) in coming years. This suggests that after this recovery and upturn, dwelling price growth is likely to be more subdued.

THE FINAL WORD

So, now looks like a good time to buy a Sunshine Coast investment. Prices should increase over the next 12 to 24 months. Rents are rising. Investors need to buy affordable, mainstream rental property, not lifestyle-orientated stock.

THE LOWDOWN

For more in-depth analysis of the local market you can purchase Michael Matusik’s full Matusik Market Outlook Report for the Sunshine Coast from his website. The report also features Matusik’s tips on how to assess a residential market: what to buy, what to pay and what to expect. It’s $50 plus GST.

ARIES [March 21-April 20] Attached Aries – prepare to be at your sexy best, as Mars charges through your partnership zone. So it’s time to up the sizzle factor and make your spouse feel extra special. Single rams – don’t sit around passively waiting for your soul mate to magically appear.

TAURUS [April 21-May 21] Have you been running around like a busy bull on steroids? It’s time to slow down, as you throw yourself into creative projects that make your heart sing. But with Mercury going retrograde on the weekend, make sure you check and double-check all social events and travel plans.

GEMINI [May 22-June 21] Twins are terriďŹ c talkers. But, when it comes to a friendship, edgling romance, hobby or sporting activity, stop talking about what you want and instead start doing. Being proactive will put a pep in your step and a smile on your dial.

CANCER [June 22-July 23] Don’t let nebulous self-doubts drag you down. Stressing about something that may happen in the future is not the sensible way to go. Use your common sense to work on practical projects so you can move forwards in a positive new direction.

LEO [July 24-Aug 23] With Venus vamping through your career zone, your professional life is about to become extremely interesting. Some lucky lions can expect a promotion, while others will just be very busy. Single cats – love and work could also combine in unexpected ways.

VIRGO [Aug 24-Sep 23] Virgos are usually thrifty shoppers and very good savers. But, with Mars and Uranus both moving through your money zones and Mercury [your ruling planet] about to go retrograde, your impulsive side could take over. So steer clear of internet sales and dodgy deals.

LIBRA [Sep 24-Oct 23] Mighty Mars is moving through your sign so strive to get the balance right between cool independence and cozy togetherness. Pooling individual ideas leads to exciting joint ventures, as you dare to be different and break a few rules.

SCORPIO [Oct 24-Nov 22] With peacemaker Venus visiting your relationship zone, you’re in a generous mood as you offer emotional support to those around you. Scorpios are serious planners and master strategists but it’s a wonderful week to step outside your usual routine.

SAGITTARIUS [Nov 23-Dec 21] This week’s stars encourage being impulsive in love. Amorous archers are experts at falling in and out of love very quickly, and are notorious for hasty hookups, shotgun weddings and dramatic divorces. A little less haste will lead to less long-term regrets.

CAPRICORN [Dec 22-Jan 20] Wednesday’s all about love and romance, as you cuddle up close with your partner. Friday’s unpredictable, so keep your adaptability muscles wellexed. If you’re a clever goat, you’ll handle fractious family members with kid gloves on the weekend.

AQUARIUS [Jan 21-Feb 19] Wednesday’s stars highlight your creative and humanitarian side. Friday’s sun/Uranus hook-up is all about shaking up your usual routine, taking some adventurous risks, and expressing your individuality in innovative and unexpected ways.

PISCES [Feb 20-March 20] With Venus and Saturn in your neighbourhood and international zones, there are long-term, far-reaching beneďŹ ts to be gained through nurturing contacts within your local community. So your current motto is ‘Think global, act local’.

SURF REPORT with MWP’s man in the water

Word of advice if I may! Never place your iPod in the back pocket when going to the toilet – just sayin’! Or make sure you have rubber gloves handy! A few waves will be around on the weekend but I’d get in early as winds are tending SSE. In Sumatra at the moment at A-frame it will be f ve- to eight-foot – let me tell you it would be absolutely insane! A perfect, and I mean perfect, right-hander that allows you in early and just gives and gives you love until you hit the shore break. So get on a plane and hit it!

FISHING REPORT with Wayne Nilsson from Maroochydore Fishing World

ESTUARY: Bream are the go, with quality f sh at the Maroochy Bar using fowl gut and prawns. Catch whiting and f athead on yabbies, along the northern bank of the Maroochy near Twin Waters. Jew and estuary cod will be at the Motorway Bridge with live herring the preferred bait. SURF: Tarwhine and sea bream are at Stumers Creek mouth (Coolum) and at the coffee rocks at Mudjimba. Find dart and whiting along North Shore Maroochy using pippies. Tailor will be on the night high tide at Pincushion with pillies best. OFFSHORE: Pearl perch, squire and red emperor are at the Gneerings using squid and cut f esh baits. Check the Barwon Banks for snapper, pearlies, Venus tuskf sh and parrot. FRESHWATER: The bigger impoundments like Somerset and Boondooma are still working okay for bass and golden perch using live shrimps and deep divers with smaller dams like Lake Macdonald, Ewen Maddock and Borumba returning f sh on shallow divers and earthworms.

You will never look back...
