love the water. I love walking by it in winter and diving into it on a hot summer’s day. I love sitting on the headland or the beach and watching the ocean. I love paddling on my SUP and playing with my son in the waves. But don’t ask me to get onto a boat. A day on a tinnie – oh, I think I have to wash my hair. A week on a cruise ship – no thanks, I have a dentist’s appointment. I’ll just sit on the rock wall at Mooloolaba and watch you head out. So it was with much admiration, and a little bewilderment, that I chatted to a couple of people who seem to have salt air and diesel fuel in their veins. Their working lives are all about ships, and big ones. I was lucky enough to catch up with two men from Brisbane Marine Pilots, that organisation that provides pilot boats every day of the week.

] It’s a pilot’s job to guide those mammoth vessels into port, and for the job you need to possess a fair amount of physical f tness, lots of marine skills and, to me, a large dose of courage. But these are humble men doing a job they love, a job that is so incredibly important to our region, and something most of us don’t even really think about. So climb on board, over the page. Our property cover story also comes with a nautical theme, as we visit a lighthouse in Sweden. Like it? You can buy it. Head over to page 40 to f nd out more We’ve been busy shopping again this week, with three pages of fashion, starting on page 32, and two pages of health and beauty, on page 30. We have your plans for the weekend sorted in our my time section starting on page 27, and plenty of news, star style, motoring and more. Ahoy!

A safe place to land When the big ships head into and out of port, it is up to a handful of skilled mariners to make sure it all runs smoothly, writes Jemma Pearson.

F

or seaside-dwelling Sunshine Coasters, and even for those who live a little further inland, there is something indescribably magical about the ocean. Of course, it provides a playground for surfers and swimmers, a backdrop for a family barbecue and a shoreline on which to walk the dog. But you don’t really notice the magnif cence of the ocean until you’re not doing anything at all. On any given day along the coast, hundreds, even thousands of us can be found simply watching the sea. That huge stretch of water to our east is constantly changing, depending on the weather, the tides and time of day. For those sitting on the rock wall at Mooloolaba, checking out the surf at Kawana or watching over the kids at play on Moffat Beach, that vista usually includes a ship or two, or even a dozen, waiting to be shepherded into the Port of Brisbane. Most of us know they are lined up to head into our capital, but once we’ve lost sight of them, how much thought do we give to what they get up to in the bay, when they have left the expanse of ocean to squeeze into a narrow, busy port? For a group of important mariners, those ships are very much front of mind.

HELPING HAND

Brenton Winn is the managing director of Brisbane Marine Pilots (BMP), which provides a piloting service on behalf of Maritime Safety Queensland. It’s Winn’s job and that of his team to fulf l the legal requirement that any ship of 50 metres or longer has a pilot to navigate it in and out of the port. And it’s a big load. According to the latest Maritime Safety Queensland shipping movement report, from September 2013, pilots were required to help out on more than 500 movements – that’s passenger liners, tankers, container ships and more that come and go. And that’s a fairly typical month. It falls on the shoulders of BMP’s 36 pilots to ensure those ships are berthed eff ciently and safely, without damage to the ship, the environment or other water craft. “We are on board to provide local knowledge of the port when the ships come in,” Winn says, adding that not only do the pilots need to navigate Brisbane’s channels and reduced depths while keeping an eye on everyone else on the water, but they also offer advice to the ships’ crews on things like tides and weather and co-ordinate berths. All ports around the world require pilots that

SAFETY FIRST

Pilot Nicolas Fischer loves his job, but “you can’t hide from the fact that [we are responsible for] the safety of life at sea.” He points to the number of recreational boat users that use the ocean, but are not familiar with the shipping channels. “A really important message is small boat users should monitor VHF channel 12” which keeps them up to date on the ships using our waters. “Some ships are close to 300 metres long and some are over 14 metres deep so their ability to manoeuvre is restricted. It also takes a long time to stop them.”

have a thorough understanding of the local area, but Brisbane can be tricky. Winn says it is a 45-mile trip from the meeting point off Kawana, where the pilots climb on board to navigate safely into port and then into the available berth. “Our pilot station is at Mooloolaba and we meet the vessels two miles south-east of Point Cartwright. You might see ships at anchor waiting for berth space.” He says the massive passenger ships can be challenging, though to watch the movements from a Sunshine Coast beach, you would never know. All pilots are experienced and highly qualif ed mariners and with so many ships coming and going, and doing so despite the time of day or weather, there are a lot of logistical ducks Winn and his team need to line up. “We have to manage it fairly closely. As far as shipping goes the pilot does a plan before he gets on board and that is to consider the actual vessel and determine which channels to take across the bay.” He tells MWP it takes about four hours from the time the pilot gets on board to berthing, “though that depends on terminals and cargo”.

LOCAL KNOWLEDGE

Sunshine Coast-based Nicolas Fischer has been a pilot since 1997 and has been with BMP for 10 years. He talks about his job with an enthusiasm that is enviable. Before becoming a pilot “I was 15 years at sea as a master mariner. You have to work your way through the ranks. When you go to sea there are aspects that are really nice [but the remoteness can be an issue]. The really rewarding thing about ship handling is meeting people from other [countries].” He says the exposure to other cultures makes the job incredibly rewarding. “Every day is different,” he adds. “If you like travel you will love piloting. You meet people from different [countries] every day. It is like going to a different cafe every day – there is a smorgasbord of people.” But it is a serious job. “We provide a service; we are appointed by the ship to guide them in. And we have a legal responsibility.” M Y W EEK LY PREVIEW.C OM .A U

While the “nuts and bolts of ship handling” is a pilot’s main concern, when Fischer talks about his job it’s the exquisite backdrop and the fascinating coming together of cultures that he most ref ects on. He talks of the joy of introducing the ship’s crew to the Glass House Mountains. “Around Caloundra head it is really beautiful to see the sun come up and the closing of the day is beautiful; it is full of drama.”

GET ON BOARD

Pilots waiting for a ship to arrive, or disembarking from one that has left the bay, leave from and arrive at Mooloolaba’s pilot station. But how does a man, from a relatively small launch boat, climb aboard a huge vessel? With a lot of skill and trust in those around him. Pilots usually board a ship via a rope ladder. It’s one of the f rst tricky stages in as procedure that has many carefully calculated moments. In calm seas, under a blue sky, it sounds like

a relatively simple operation. But in driving rain and heavy winds, and in punishing seas, surely it’s a little more challenging? “[Boarding] sounds hairy but it is all about using the experience of many years and really good equipment,” Fischer tells MWP. “It looks hairy but it’s not if not done properly.” On top of the years of maritime training and experience, and local knowledge, a pilot needs a certain level of general f tness. “AMSA, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority, has us

do biannual checks and we have health and safety policy,” Fischer says. “Then there is also common sense – being a shift worker you have to look after yourself.” Once on board the pilots have to quickly make friends with a ship full of strangers. Not something that would appeal to everyone, but it’s a part of the job Fischer seems to relish. “Because you are a master mariner and qualif ed pilot you are met with a mutual respect. If you show respect it bounces back,” he says, adding the Australian

WANT TO BE A PILOT?

All pilots need a commercial shipping background and sea-going masters certif cate. Brisbane Marine Pilots’ managing director Brenton Winn says the pilot launches often welcome trainees and those on work experience aboard. “There is a lot of training to do on the port. It is a very dynamic area for shipping and an interesting job. You meet fantastic people from all over the world as there is opportunity for conversation and getting to know other ships.” And the job could use a few more women. Winn tells MWP there are just three or four female pilots in Australia, though none are working in Brisbane.

The pilots’ launch boat pilots are well regarded around the world. But it’s the funny stories of life on the seas that we want to hear about. “There are a pile of funny things you see and hear,” Fischer says. “The old seadog captain is to some degree a thing of the past” but he insists he has met many characters and has plenty of stories, though not many he can share with an MWP readership. “Any cultural norm that I have formed in my mind has been shattered. You occasionally see things that just astound,” he teases. “Brisbane is a beautiful place,” Fischer adds, and as the f rst Australian many of the ships’ crews come into contact with, he sees his role to some degree as an advocate of the nation. We probably couldn’t ask for a better group of men to represent us around the world.

Our pilot station is at Mooloolaba and we meet the vessels two miles south-east of Point Cartwright

GINGER FESTIVAL ADDS SOME SPICE

A

bout 10,000 people are expected to walk through the gates of the Ginger Factory this weekend to celebrate the 18th Ginger Flower and Food Festival. It started as a way to raise awareness about an ornamental and exotic plant few people had seen and has grown to include food and gardening demonstrations attracting visitors from all over south-east Queensland. The Ginger Factory’s general manager Corinne Mikkelsen says visitors will be in for a treat when they see the extraordinary range of plants brought in for the festival. “Of the 120 different species on show – from delicate costas and curcumas to bold beehive

50%

gingers – visitors will be in for a visual feast,” Mikkelsen says. This year’s program includes an extensive list of local food and gardening experts, who will be giving demonstrations across the three days. Gardening experts include the Ginger Factory’s head gardener John Pegg, who will be giving daily guided walks through the gardens. “There’s not much John doesn’t know about gardening with gingers and heliconias and the festival is the ideal format for some one-on-one advice from John,” Mikkelsen says. Also on hand to talk about plants will be Isabell Shipard from Shipard’s Herb Farm and permaculture educator and designer Morag Gamble from SEED International. Visitors will also be in for a treat with some of the Coast’s high prof le chefs and food experts sharing tips and recipes. They include Tania Hubbard from the Gluten Free Grain Free Company, Spirit House executive chef, Kelly Lord and Laurent Vancam, who is passionate about real food in school canteens. It is Vancam’s f rst festival and he is looking forward to sharing simple easy-to-cook meals with families. “It’s exciting, it’s good,” he says. “It’s real food and that’s what I like.” He will be demonstrating how to cook a couscous salad, a chicken tagine (with a wok) and a pear tarte tatin. “It’s not top shelf,” he explains. But that’s what makes it do-able for the average family. Carolyn Exelby, the assistant to the Ginger Factory’s general manager has been there for all 18 festivals and has seen it evolve. She says one of the key success stories with the festival is that as far as possible it features local experts and sources plants from local growers. The Ginger Flower and Food Festival kicks off today at the Ginger Factory on Pioneer Road at Yandina and will run until Sunday. Admission and parking are free. The gates are open from 9am to 5pm. For the full program visit: gingerfactory.com.au.

FAST FACTS • The origins of ginger are uncertain. • It has been grown in tropical Asia since ancient times. • Its use as a f avouring pre-dates history. • Ginger was one of the most commonly traded spices in the 13th and 14th centuries.

SURFERS FIGHT CRUISE SHIP TERMINAL

T

hree-time world surf ng champion Mick Fanning has joined a campaign to save his “favourite wave in the world” from a cruise ship terminal. Leda Holdings plans to build $2 billion cruise ship port, Ocean Terminal Project, near Kirra Beach at the southern end of the Gold Coast.

The Australian company says it already has Commonwealth approval for the project. But thousands of locals have signed an online petition against it, saying it will destroy local beaches and their lifestyle. Fanning, who spent his grommet years surf ng at AFP Kirra, spoke out against the terminal last week. “My favourite wave in the world is Kirra and I’m not the only surfer that feels that way,” he says. “So when I heard about the proposed cruise ship terminal, my f rst thought was we’re going to lose one of the greatest surf destinations on earth.”

Google transport woes

Fanning says cruise ships will bring pollution, which will affect water quality and marine life. He also says public beach and coastal land will be taken away from future generations to make room for the project. “The more I looked into the proposed development, though, I realised we are at risk of losing so much more than the wave,” Fanning says. “This development is wrong on so many levels and I hope people that share my view make their voices heard and join the resistance.” Fanning and fellow Australian surf ng champion Joel Parkinson will take part in a “Paddle-Out” protest at North Kirra on January 19. Fanning won the world championship in Hawaii last month following up titles he won in 2007 and 2009. He is one of only four Australians to have won three world championships. AAP

Google workers commuting from San Francisco to the company’s Silicon Valley campus can make part of the trek on an 83-foot, Wi-Fi-equipped catamaran. The free ferry service runs twice each morning and evening from San Francisco’s ferry terminal to the Port of Redwood City, about 42 kilometres away, where employees can then hop on a private bus to work. Google is hoping to defuse a growing controversy as the boat service started on the same day San Francisco city off cials said Google and other tech companies, including Apple and Genentech, that use public bus stops to pick up thousands of employees on private shuttles, must pay roughly $US1 per stop per day as part of an 18-month pilot program. But critics of Google’s buses are not thrilled by news of the boat, citing concerns that catamarans are worse for the environment than shuttle buses. AAP

BUDERIM BUSINESS SUCCESS

usiness is booming for a Buderim networking group, which generated nearly $2.4 million in referrals for its members in 2013. A collective of 38 business people are members of BNI Australia’s Team Momentum chapter, an international networking organisation specialising in the exchange of qualif ed business referrals among its members. “This really is an awesome achievement for a local business network,” says Ben Amos, vice president of the Buderim Team Momentum chapter. “We are a motivated group of business people who understand the value that personal relationships and face-to-face networking can bring and this has been validated over the last 12 months, which saw us smash our $2.1 million target.” Only one person per profession is permitted to join the network, which eliminates competition. “The BNI style of networking is

based on the philosophy of Givers Gain – if I help you, then you’ll help me and we will all do more business,” Amos says. “And 2014 is looking to be an even stronger year for our local economy with our chapter aiming to close even more business from referrals than we did last year.” The chapter meets for breakfast at the Buderim Tavern every Thursday morning and professional openings are available for businesses interested in joining. To learn more or to join the guest list for the next meeting contact Ben Amos on 0434 399 027 or email ben@innovatemedia.com.au.

O

rd Minnett has released its 2014 Resources Outlook and revised iron ore, base metals, gold and silver price forecasts, and updated estimates for mining stocks. Iron ore is especially important as it is one of Australia’s biggest exports and by far the biggest earnings contributor to one of our preferred stocks, Rio Tinto. Chinese crude steel output is expected to continue to surprise on the upside, underpinning demand for iron ore. We forecast steel output in China of 775 million tonnes over 2014, which means forecast growth in steel output of f ve per cent and 2.5 per cent over the next two years should support iron ore prices in the range of US$110-130 a tonne. As a result, we have lifted our iron ore forecasts to US$125 a tonne and US$110 a tonne for 2014 and 2015, respectively. These forecasts are nine per cent and f ve per cent higher than previous forecasts, and will see some of Australia’s low-cost producers maintain very healthy operating margins. The outlook for copper is less bullish and it is expected expansions to Chinese smelters in the second quarter of 2014 will lead to an oversupply situation. The secondhalf copper prices are expected to

drop to US$3.11 a pound, which is well below the current price of US$3.34 pound. Gold was very topical during 2013 for all the wrong reasons. The price plummeted 25 per cent to lead gold stocks signif cantly lower over the year, with several down by more than 60 per cent. Unfortunately, there seems to be little respite for the gold price – with forecasts of US$1263 an ounce in 2014 and US$1275 an ounce in 2015, which is only a modest improvement from spot prices of US$1225 an ounce. Nevertheless, an upside is in sight in a handful of gold stocks from their depressed levels. The overall best picks in the mining sector continue to be Rio Tinto and Fortescue Metals Group. Rio Tinto should continue to get rerated by the market as expansion projects are delivered ahead of plan and as free cash f ow improves, which should provide the opportunity for increased returns to shareholders. Fortescue has been a strong performer, climbing 27 per cent in 2013, but a recent 10 per cent pullback has created an attractive entry point. Risk is reducing in Fortescue with the balance sheet improving, thanks to internally generated cash f ow, and ramp-up risks are diminishing as projects get closer to completion. The problem with the post

T

The philatelist’s hobby is going to get harder, but it’s not just the stamps that are suffering in an increasingly letter-less world.

he British may have created the world’s f rst postage stamp, but it was one of its Australian colonies that initiated its use for pre-paying the delivery of letters. In 1838 NSW announced letters aff xed with a 1.5-penny stamp would be delivered free. A few months later, British postal authorities issued the famous Penny Black for off cial use there. Despite the technological advances in the 175 years since, we’re still sticking postage stamps on letters. But we are doing it less and less. Digital technology has reduced the demand for letters, placing signif cant f nancial pressure on these services. Letter volumes in Australia reached a peak in 2007-2008 with 4.6 billion items, but in the f ve years since they have fallen by more than a billion. The parcel business, on the other hand, is going through the roof on the back of online spending. But unlike the letter business, Royal Mail and Australia Post run their parcel operations in a competitive marketplace. And unlike the letter business, parcel delivery is very prof table – provided you keep up with the competition. Parcels generated $355 million prof t in the last f nancial year for Australia Post, compared with its regulated mail business which reported losses of $218.4 million. To remain competitive in parcels, postal services need capital to invest in new technology and on delivery logistics such as parcel lockers. The Cameron Government’s reluctance to provide Royal Mail

with capital led to its partial privatisation late last year. And in Australia, there are renewed calls to consider a similar path. Graeme Samuel, former chair of the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission, has no doubts about what should be done with Australia Post. “Of course it should be privatised, and of course it will be subject to the mother of all scare campaigns,” he said recently. Former Australia Post chair David Mortimer concedes the postal service’s letter business will suffer increasing losses unless radical change is accepted by the community. Analysts estimate Australia Post could return the government as much as $4 billion in a sell-off. But Treasury would also lose the annual income stream that comes from owning it. The decline in letter volumes, combined with the rising cost of maintaining a huge network of post off ces and agencies, threatens to inhibit Australia Post’s ability to increase the prof table parts of its business. To offset losses in its letters business, it wants the government to allow the cost of a basic stamp to increase from 60 cents to 70 cents in 2014. It also wants approval to offer a wider range of trusted services – especially Centrelink transactions – and for an easing of limits on its commercial freedoms. It’s not hard to see why Australia Post needs more revenue for its letter service. While volumes are declining, it has to fund a statutory universal obligation that requires it to be reasonably accessible to all Australians

on an equitable basis, wherever they reside or carry on business. It also needs to ensure that performance standards reasonably meet the social, industrial and commercial needs of the community. In metropolitan areas, that means a daily weekday delivery service to every home and business; in remote rural areas, it means a weekly roadside delivery at the least. To do that it needs 4400 retail outlets, including about 2500 in rural and remote areas, and 2446 roadside contractors. Australia Post argues that the cost of postage has not kept pace with inf ation, creating a 20-cent gap between the price of a stamp and the consumer price index. It believes that various interpretations of its enabling legislation have caused the shelving of potential commercial opportunities complementary to its core business. At the same time, other international postal organisations, freed from government-imposed limitations and obligations, have been able to grow substantial commercial businesses. Graeme Samuel concedes that privatising Australia Post is not something that can be “thrust down the electorate’s throat”. “We will hear about how it will remove services from the bush, but if people look at the arguments rationally, they just don’t stack up.” Another former ACCC commissioner, Stephen King, believes that the national broadband network eventually will make letters redundant. And presumably the postage stamp as well. AAP

Singers Mariah Carey and Beyoncé Knowles apparently love it but the lemon detox diet has struck a particularly sour note for Australian nutritionists. They have voted the two-week water, lemon juice, cayenne pepper and maple syrup fad as the worst diet for the third year in a row. The SkinnyMe tea, and the Ashy Bines Clean Eating Guidelines are the next worst, according to a Dietitians Association of Australia survey of 200 members. There’s no one-size-f ts-all solution to losing weight, says association spokesperson Melanie McGrice, a practising dietician. “The problem with fad diets is they’re all about restrictive eating patterns that you can’t stick to over the long haul,” she says. “They may even undermine your health. What you lose on detox diets, like the lemon detox diet and SkinnyMe tea, is usually f uid, healthy gut bacteria and electrolytes.” She says people don’t need to go on severe detox diets because the lungs, liver, and kidneys provide the function “every minute of the day”. People who want to detox should cut down on fatty, highly processed foods and alcohol and caffeine. AAP

BRIGHT IDEA The lip trend for 2014? Wild colours. Look out for Australis’ new range of lip colour called NEON Crush. The good news is that a range of NEON Crush eyeshadows, bronzers and blushes are also being released to go with your new pout.

The alphabet beauty craze has moved on from DD creams, and is entering into EE territory with Previse Skincare’s EE MarineGranules product launching in March. Differing slightly from its AA (anti-ageing), BB (beauty balm), CC (colour corrector) and DD (daily defence) cream predecessors, EE stands for ‘extra exfoliation’ and works as a mousse that can be added to a traditional cleanser for further exfoliating benef ts. While the EE MarineGranules is the f rst product in the EE category, it is predicted to extend and add category dimension to the alphabet cream trend. Harrington plans to expand the Previse brand to Australia by 2015.

CACAO V COCOA

You might have heard of raw cacao, found in plenty of recipes for healthy treats. But surely you can use some of the cocoa powder you have in the pantry? Probably not a good idea. So what’s the difference? Cacao is the raw form of chocolate, made from cold-pressing unroasted cocoa beans. Cocoa powder is cacao that has been roasted, which changes its structure and nutritional value. Cocoa powder might also have sweeteners and cocoa butter added, so no, it’s not a healthy product. And remember, all those studies that tell you chocolate is good for you are referring to the health benef ts of unprocessed raw cacao, which can help shield nerve cells from damage, lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of disease. It is a powerful antioxidant and is high in minerals such as iron, magnesium, calcium and zinc.

Sounds of Hope... It is often said that youth is wasted on the young, and rightly so. Young people have many of the advantages in life, but little of the wisdom needed to use it wisely. Aging is part of life that simply cannot be avoided, even for the most motivated of people and unfortunately many people begin to experience hearing loss as they age. Hearing loss can be one of the most frustrating side effects of aging and can cause diff culty in communicating, a loss of independence and can even harm social relationships, which are vital as you enter the later years of life. Thankfully, technology has advanced to the point where there is no need to suffer in silence. The newest generation of hearing aids are revolutionary. Many of them f t securely into the ear and are nearly invisible. The newest advancements in hearing aids offer nearly natural sound amplif cation without frustrating background noise and feedback. This generation of hearing devices has greatly reduced the stigma of seeking assistance with hearing loss.

More and more people are choosing to fully take advantage of their retirement years and correct the hearing loss caused by age and exposure during their youth. The new micro-sized hearing devices are easy to care for and offer rechargability, allowing you to be active and stay active. ine hundred cubic centimetres. It’s not much of anything, really. A bit more than a bottle of wine. A bit less than a bottle of Coke. Enough of an engine to power a decent-sized motorcycle. But hardly enough to push around a car. Or so you’d think. Yet that’s the engine capacity of

Renault’s latest economy machine – its baby Clio hatchback that’s just arrived in Australia. The downsizing trend has f rmly taken hold in Europe, with the new Clio just the latest to do more with less. Of course, the Europeans, with their tight city streets and clogged traff c, are entirely comfortable with

the notion of tiny, fuel-eff cient and low-emission engines. But it’s not a recipe that has historically won many fans in this wide brown land. The Clio might change those perceptions. With just three cylinders and a modest power output of just 66 kilowatts, the Clio TCe90 delivers surprising performance and driving Continued over >

] the little engine was found wanting at all was climbing hills without a decent dose of revs – revealing its sheer lack of capacity. Otherwise, you’d swear it was a much bigger and more powerful engine. We also tested the more powerful, bigger-engined version of the Clio – the TCe120, boasting a relatively brawny 1.2-litre, fourcylinder turbo with a useful 88 kilowatt. It’s necessary to buy the larger engine if you want the benef t of an EDC (Eff cient Dual Clutch) automatic transmission, available only in mid-spec Expression and top-spec Dynamique trim. Common to both Clio models is the excellent presentation in terms of styling and f nish. All cars feel classy and upmarket – particularly impressive given the juicy $16,790 opening price for the base model Authentique TCe90. The cabin is beautifully presented – reminiscent of its Italian rival, the Fiat 500, with its brightly coloured, glossy enamel fascias

throughout and its funky dials and gauges. It’s retro yet modern. Particularly with the base model, but right up to the top-spec Dynamique TCe120, at a tick over $23,000, the Clio looks an excellent value proposition. The instrument cluster is particularly clever, with speed centrally displayed in digital format and analogue dials for tachometer and fuel levels to either side. The Clio is also impressively spacious. We had no trouble accommodating four full-sized occupants, and cargo space is also relatively generous. The Clio is the latest weapon in a reinvigorated Renault push into Australia after a couple of half-hearted previous attempts to establish the brand on our shores. The brand has earned a huge

prof le as the engine supplier to Aussie Formula One ace Mark Webber’s Red Bull team. The tiny 900cc powerplant of the Clio seems a bit at odds with that image – at least until you drive it – but with cars this good, it’s no wonder Renault is starting to build

some momentum. Even so, you probably won’t f nd many marketing campaigns boasting about having the smallest engine in its class. Or having less power than previous models. This new Clio has both, but it’s much more than you might expect.

<from previous page satisfaction in a car with such a modest carbon footprint. It’s impressively zippy around town and cruises comfortably on the highway speed limit. Our test machine had a f ve-speed manual rather than the six-speeder found in most machines these days but it gave the little hatch a surprising spread of performance. At 100km/h, it’s ticking over at less than 3000rpm and sipping about 2.5L/100km in the process. At that rate it would travel the best part of 1500 kilometres before emptying its petite 45-litre tank. Its off cial combined cityhighway thirst is just 4.5L/100km – although our test, conducted mostly in urban conditions, produced less than f attering f gures. In a week of city-based driving we struggled to average much below 9L/100km, not a disaster but a far from the off cial urban number of 5.6L/100km. Perhaps I have a heavy foot – and to be honest it’s sometimes tempting to let the little three-cylinder engine rev a bit with its strangely rewarding exhaust note. In fact, the only time

LIMOUSINES IN DEMAND

A

chauffeur-driven car represents the pinnacle of motoring pomp and manufacturers are seeing an upsurge in demand for them from high-earning individuals and corporate customers. A growing number of carmakers are listing a stretched high-end model in the catalogue in a bid to attract customers who want to be driven in comfort and style. Only a few years ago, bespoke limousines were built solely to special order. German manufacturers, along with British makers, have always been at the forefront of long-wheelbase luxury. Audi’s range-topping A8, the Mercedes S-Class, BMW’s 7 Series and the Jaguar XJ are all available from the factory in stretched form. Top managers and oligarchs appreciate the advantages of a chauffeur-driven car with plenty of back-seat legroom. It enables them to put their feet up after a stressful

day at the off ce or simply carry on working in a relaxed atmosphere. Audi, Mercedes-Benz and Jaguar are happy to extend their f agship models by 13 centimetres for a fee between $5000 and $10,000. BMW charges a minimum of $6,235 for adding 14 centimetres. The biggest king-size limo on offer comes from Rolls-Royce. The XL version of the Phantom costs about $755,000 and measures 6.09 metres. Demand is being driven by the preferences of highly placed customers in China and the United States. At the same time, manufacturers who previously had no elongated limousine in their standard program are offering longer models. Porsche is an example. It hails its Panamera Executive as the f rst longwheelbase Gran Turismo car. Not to be outdone, Land Rover has weighed into this market and its long-wheelbase model will enter European showrooms this year. The

Range Rover’s bodywork has been enlarged by 20 centimetres to give a full 18 centimetres more legroom. The few centimetres of extra metal that go into making chauffeur-driven cars offer enlarged scope for creature comforts. The array of goodies ranges from monitors with online access through to seats which recline fully. The Mercedes-Benz S-Class even offers automatic massage programs for stressed-out passengers and there are mini-bars in various

shapes and sizes. Celebrities, aristocrats and other high-rollers who prefer to be driven around by chauffeur enjoy sinking into the upholstery. The aim is to make them feel at home right away, says Malte Bahr, co-owner of the Hamburg-based courtesy car company M+M Mobility. In his view, such cars are not just a method of getting from A to B, but a way of further cosseting travellers already used to a high level of luxury. AAP

Tired of the suburban lifestyle? Here’s a home where you can literally get away from it all.

he Dämman’s Lighthouse is perched on a tiny rocky islet at Kalmarsund, a strait between the Swedish mainland and the island of Öland. The unique residence has been created by carefully renovating and modernising an old open-water lighthouse, which was built in 1873 and was in service until 1968. Until the end of 2012 it operated as a luxury hotel and

conference centre, but could easily be transformed into a family holiday home offering the ultimate peaceful escape. The hotel can host 24 guests across 11 rooms, including an impressive wedding suite, and there is a restaurant that seats up to 48 people. On a secluded pier to the east is a non-denominational chapel for weddings or quiet relaxation. To ensure easy access, the sale

also includes a mainland property with a small dock, an off ce and a separate living space. The lighthouse property (called Dämmans Fur) is offered for sale by Vladi Private Islands, an international boutique real estate company specialising in island properties. A Pennsylvania resident has made headlines with a unique property listing advising potential buyers that his home is “slightly haunted”. Gregory Leeson’s 1901 Victorian home is at 1217 Marion Street, Dunmore and features four bedrooms, an open stairwell with stained glass windows, original hardwood f oors, a walk-up attic with an eye-catching turret and – according to the prof le he posted in late December on popular US real estate website zillow.com – a ghost. “Nothing serious, though,” the prof le reads. “The sounds of phantom footsteps. A strange knocking sound followed by a very quiet (hardly noticeable, even) scream at 3.13am, maybe once a week. Twice a week, tops. “And the occasional ghostly visage lurking behind you in the bathroom mirror. “Even still, this occurs very rarely and only in the second f oor bathroom.” Leeson is asking $US144,000 (around $162,000) for the home, which seems like good value, ghost and all.

ARIES Mar 21-Apr 20 The stars favour intense emotional connections with others. But don’t be too blunt about saying what’s on your mind. Words can wound, so think things through before you speak.

TAURUS Apr 21-May 21 With Venus reversing through your aspirations zone, your goals may seem to be unattainable. But with persistence and a lot of hard work, you will soon realise your dreams.

GEMINI May 22-Jun 21 You have a strong need to communicate your emotions this weekend – but can anyone decipher what you’re saying? Take your time, as your feelings are in a state of flux.

CANCER Jun 22-Jul 23 Saturday is super for socialising. But some crabs will be cranky on Sunday, when there may be cross words with a child or friend. You won’t like everything you hear.

LEO Jul 24-Aug 23 Close relationships look tricky, as you say what’s on your mind and then step back and watch the sparks fly. Less “honesty” and more tact will make the weekend less dramatic.

VIRGO Aug 24-Sep 23 Your head and heart are at odds this weekend, as you try to balance thinking and feeling. So leave making big decisions for a more suitable time. Strive to communicate clearly.

LIBRA Sep 24-Oct 23 Family functions are favoured on Saturday. But expect some frustration regarding a financial situation or friendship on Sunday, as reality brings you down to earth with a thud.

SCORPIO Oct 24-Nov 22 The moon’s in your sign for most of the weekend. But don’t spoil things by being sulky and moody, especially with family members. Direct your energy into projects around the house.

SAGITTARIUS Nov 23-Dec 21 You’re keen to communicate on Saturday, but in quieter and more personal ways than usual. Activities like journal writing are suitable – put down in words what’s really on your mind.

CAPRICORN Dec 22-Jan 20 This weekend is the time to differentiate between things you want and things you really need. In the current economic climate, there’s no room for being careless with cash or credit.

AQUARIUS Jan 21-Feb 19 The moon lights up your career zone on Saturday so the focus is on professional matters, as you communicate your ideas. Be tactful though, because a colleague may not like what you say.

PISCES Feb 20-Mar 20 Pisceans don’t like facing harsh realities. But resist the urge to stay too long in fantasy land. Be inspired by birthday great Virginia Woolf: “You cannot find peace by avoiding life.”

SURF REPORT with MWP’s man in the water

They say the wait will be worthwhile, but seriously? This is getting crazy! Looks like more ESE winds turning to south-east and small waves. Woohoo. So my prediction is for some great fun swell on Australia Day weekend. Why, you ask? Because there is nothing more Australian then grabbing a wave with some friends, having a barbecue then going back out for a sunset session. Okay, Jamie Mitchell’s wipe-out last week did not look like a lot of fun. That wave looked 60-foot plus – check it out when you get the chance, it will have you shaking your head! Enjoy the water and when the swell eventually arrives, don’t be greedy and share. Unless of course you f nd your own sandbank perfection – then all bets are off, and catch as many as you can!

FISHING REPORT with Wayne Nilsson from Maroochydore Fishing World

ESTUARY: An incredible number of boats and anglers from the Maroochy Bar to Bli Bli with mixed results. Best catches have been taken at night or early mornings with whiting, bream and f athead being taken throughout the river system. Trevally in the mouth area up to the wharf complex of the Mooloolah River. SURF: Tailor have been a surprise packet at dawn and dusk from Maroochy Bar to Mooloolah Rock Walls. Whiting, bream and dart from North Shore Mudjimba using pipis and beach worms. OFFSHORE: Conditions have not been favourable for offshore f shing and those brave enough to venture out have encountered large bait schools, with school mackerel and a few Spanish mackerel feeding on the bait not far off the shark nets. FRESHWATER: Borumba Dam is returning saratoga on f y, though the dam has had blue green algae, so check before heading there. Somerset Dam is a haven for anglers with deep divers, live worms and shrimp all returning bass and yellowbelly.
