Don’t move... Renovate Where it all comes together easily

Keep busy these Easter holidays with these three DIY project ideas. You’ll be surprised how small changes can make a big difference around the home.

1. Home entrance What better place to start than with the entryway to your home? It is, after all, the place visitors will form their first impressions.

Clean and scrub tiled entrance ways, or consider laying timber decking for a unique look. Add some potted plants to inject colour into the area. You can also plant low-lying grass plants and greenery to create a welcoming environment. Re-stain, paint or even replace your front door if it has started to age. Finally, hang some artwork in the front hall or add an eye-catching hutch, table or décor accessory.

2. Wonderwalls Wallpaper is now one of the most popular ways to create an interior feature. From calming neutrals to muted floral and bold patterns, the choices are endless. There are no rules when it comes to hanging wallpaper – everywhere from the bathroom and the laundry to the bedroom can be papered. Keep in mind you’ll need a couple of extra hands when hanging wallpaper. It can be tricky but with patience, you’ll achieve the desired effect.

TIP: Use a paint brush to apply paste to the corners and edges of the wall.

However, use a roller for the rest of the wall.

3. Closet makeover Renovating to sell or simply updating for your own family? Either way, a walk-in-closet is a great addition. Sometimes, it’s these smaller spaces in our homes that get forgotten.

Devote some time to updating and improving the functionality of your closet. Head to your local hardware store and purchase wire racks or shelving. They are easy to install and will create more storage space. Shoe racks are also a great idea as are storage baskets.

On the Sunshine Coast, decks are a large part of our outdoor lifestyle. But, with a deck comes hard work and maintenance. This includes regularly re-nailing your decking timber or re-tightening the screws to ensure there are no loose ones that can pop above the boards and become a tripping hazard.

Of course the biggest maintenance job associated with a deck is re-staining, which needs to be done regularly.

It’s important to stain outdoor decks at least once a year to protect the wood from sun damage. To do this, thoroughly clean the timber using a wood cleaning product. Once you have selected the right stain for your deck, apply with a natural bristle brush. Work with the grain and apply an even coat. It’s best to stain in the afternoons as the less heat, the better. Allow about 24 hours for the deck to dry.

2. LACK OF PLANNING APPROVAL This one is a no-brainer. If you don’t know if you’re allowed to knock down a wall, don’t knock down a wall. It’s better to be safe than sorry because it’s really hard to un-knock down a wall. And being ‘sorry’ involves stop work orders and fines. Check with your local council first unless you like funding government revenue.

There are many ways to bring the price down, just invest the time looking around, researching and sourcing various quotes.

5. WRONG STYLE Your kitchen needs to last at least 20 years.

Trends and fads don’t need to last and rarely ever do. Industrial kitchens used to be cool and the thing to do, but nowadays are only appropriate in lofts, city dwellings and real industrial buildings. Predict the future if you can to ensure your kitchen style will last the test of time.

6. LACK OF COHESION Think of your kitchen like a well-designed outfit. Every fixture and fitting within it needs to make sense. The layout, materials and colours within this room need to fashionably blend together, especially with other rooms in your home.

7. GETTING YOUR LAYOUT WRONG Kitchens have demands. Cupboard doors prefer to not hit feature lights when they’re opened.

Drawers have a real problem knocking into each other. Fridges hate being forced to live out their days right next to their arch enemy, the stove. An easy way to not make your kitchen mad? Learn good kitchen design by memorising the ‘working triangle.’

8. RE-WORK This is what real nightmares are made of. Buying something that you “love and must-have”, paying for it and then having to rip it out because it’s the wrong dimensions, material, colour. Familiarise yourself with the correct sequence of construction before you start. Make sure your layout is correct and your measurements are accurate. If possible, borrow another set of eyes to double check both.

9. UNPLANNED SURPRISES Surprise birthday party? So fun. Surprise promotion? Yes please. Surprise water rot under your floorboards with no money in the kitty to deal with it? Worst thing ever. You might be naive to think this won’t happen to you, but it will. You know why? Because you can’t see what you can’t see. In order to deal with the unknown risks of

renovating your kitchen, plan 10 per cent contingency for surprises along the way.

10. OVERCAPITALISING If the cost of your kitchen renovation is starting to exceed the value this update adds to your

property, then you’re knee deep in overcapitalising. This is a big no-no. Have a budget and stick to it. A renovated kitchen should cost no more than three per cent of your current property value. Not anymore.

PAINT MATCH I have just moved into a house that needs renovating. We have quite a unique paint colour on the walls and we don’t know what it is. How do we work out what colour it is if we want to match it in other rooms?

CASSANDRA SAYS Matching paint colours can be really tricky. If the house is a little bit older the colours could have changed quite a bit over time. Oil-based paints can go yellow, and oils from cooking or indoor smoking can also change the colour of internal wall and ceiling paints.

If you are going to do a full refresh the best option is to get some swatches or a fandeck from your local paint or hardware store that you think are close to the colour. Hold them up against the wall to find a current match instead of trying to work out what the original colour was. Then you can simply paint a close colour over all of the walls.

If you don’t intend on repainting all the walls it is a little trickier, although the technology is here now meaning you have other options:

The spectrophotometer In an inconspicuous location try to lift off a layer of paint no smaller than a 10-cent piece with a stanley knife. Take this sample into your local paint or hardware store and check if they have a spectrophotometer. The staff will electronically measure the colour of the surface of your sample and you can ask them to make up a test pot of paint for you to trial when you get back home. Make sure that your sample is taken from a part of the wall that is clean and smooth.

Once you think you have a close match one important thing to remember is not to change the brand of paint that you use. Each brand of paint has a slightly different white base colour which means that if you specify a certain colour of paint but use two different brands the colours can actually be quite different.

Dulux snapshot This cool little gadget may cost just under $200 but can make life easy when matching colours! Once you have purchased your Snapshot, you simply download the app to calibrate your phone.

Then you just hold the Snapshot against the wall or object you are trying to match, press the button and when the three lights illuminate it has captured the colour. Then the Dulux colour that is closest to the colour you are trying to match will show on your phone, it will also include two other close matches.

I’d still recommend a sample pot, and don’t forget to keep the same brand of paint throughout.

RIGHT CHOICE Preparing to paint? But, do you know the difference between sheen levels and their uses? Here are some great tips from Haymes Paint.

Haymes recommends using high-gloss paints for high-contact surfaces such as doors and trims. They are also ideal for kitchens as they can disguise the build-up of cooking oils and residues.

SEMI-GLOSS Any low-ventilation rooms that promote mould growth, such as bathrooms and laundries, is where you want to use semi-gloss paint. The team at Haymes says that semi-gloss paints are less porous than other sheen levels, making them more resistant to moisture and also easier to clean. When choosing a paint, it is also important to choose a product that provides protection against mould and mildew growth.

LOW-SHEEN The benefit of a low-sheen finish is its ability to hide imperfections, unlike gloss paints that will highlight any surface damage due to their reflective properties.

Matte paint has this same benefit, but low-sheen has better washability. This makes low-sheen paints suitable for high traffic areas like living rooms and bedrooms.
