Festive REFRESH Ah, Christmas. That time of year to eat, drink and be merry. A day at the beach never goes astray either. That said, it can also be a hectic time with the kids on school holidays and guests calling around to celebrate the season. My Renovation has some great ideas on how to get house ready before the holiday season really takes off.

“on the sunshine coast decks are a large part of our outdoor lifestyle”

SWIM SAFETY Pools are great fun during summer but it’s important to think of safety first. Don’t forget to check pool fencing to make sure it isn’t in need of repair. Remove any nearby furniture or prune back vegetation that could be used by young children to climb into the area. Check the pool gate to make sure it is latching correctly.

DECKING REVIVAL With summer comes lazy afternoons, long lunches and sunset drinks. And, what better place to enjoy these moments than on your outdoor deck? On the Sunshine Coast decks are a large part of our outdoor lifestyle. But, a deck requires maintenance. This includes regularly re-nailing your decking timber or re-tightening the screws to ensure there are no loose ones that can pop above the boards and become a tripping hazard.

The experts from Narellan Pools also recommend reviewing the lighting around the pool and entertainment areas: • Low-level lighting around the seating areas creates a relaxed atmosphere, however around barbecue and pool areas you may want to have brighter lighting to prevent accidents. • Adjustable LED lighting can be a perfect compromise. Most good quality kits will allow you to adjust the lighting levels on-the-fly, and some will even allow you to pick and choose the colours; white around the barbecue, blue around the pool, and a relaxing purple in the seating area, for instance.

tip

The Queensland Swimming Pool and Spa Association recommend the following tips for keeping on top of pool maintenance. • Maintain a chlorine residual of 1.0 to 2.0 milligrams per litre • Choose products that suit your needs • If you can smell chlorine it generally means you are not using enough.

Re-staining the timber is also an annual job to ensure protection from sun damage. To do this, thoroughly clean the platform using a wood cleaning product. Once you have selected the right stain for your deck, apply with a natural bristle brush. Work with the grain and apply an even coat. It’s best to stain in the afternoons as the less heat, the better. Allow about 24 hours for the deck to dry.

SUMMER CHORES

• Awnings • Louvres • Shutters • Fencing & Gates • Insect & Security Screens All screens and gates are custom designed to suit your needs.

• Make your house sparkle – clean it from top to bottom and don’t forget to clean fans and air conditioning units that will be getting a good work out through the hotter months. • Declutter spare rooms and prepare guest rooms. Clean out the kids’ rooms or toy room and donate any unused or unwanted toys and books. Look for a quick tidy-up fix and invest in some storage. We like stylish baskets and wall shelves. • Remove debris from roof gutters to prevent water damage during the storm season. • Check outdoor and indoor lighting, replacing any old bulbs • Prune the trees and tidy the gardens.

TIP If a summer storm hits, make sure you keep an eye on the water level in your potted plants. Leaving pot saucers full can cause waterlogging and rotting as well as providing a breeding ground for mosquitos. If rain is persistent, remove the saucer completely until it stops.

WELCOME CHANGE

SUMMER PLANTING

One of our favourite renovation experts, Cherie Barber, says homeowners should never underestimate the power of a fabulous façade. “Even just decluttering, tidying, cleaning, repairing and generally giving the front of your place some intensive TLC will achieve miracles,” she says. “A good going over with a high-pressure hose strips decades off most old surfaces. And if you’ve got ugly, bare concrete paths or a driveway, then think about paving paint.

If you are searching for the ideal plants for a low-maintenance garden, the key is to plant hardy, drought-tolerant varieties, including natives. Here are some of our favourite options:

You can tint it to any colour so it blends with your facade. New garden beds, updated letter box, some smart stainless steel house numerals, a few solar lights… it’s all those little touches that add up to a big impact.” For more great tips from Cherie, visit renovatingforprofit.com.au.

Petunias, portulaca, salvia, dianthus, zinnias, vinca and marigolds provide some great summer colour because they love the heat and will flower for months.

CREATING NEW LIFE TO YOUR FLOOR! An uncoated floor is dirt’s best friend! An epoxy coated floor provides a hard-wearing surface that looks great and works great in many applications such as gyms, rumpus rooms, kitchen benches and workshops. BENEFITS OF AN EPOXY FLOOR: • Adds safety by incorporating a slip resistant finish • Increases property value • Extends the usable square meterage of your home • Provides another safe area for children or pets to play during inclement weather • Makes your space much easier to keep clean

FEATURE PLANTS

design dream With Cassandra Fenaughty Cassandra Fenaughty is a landscape architect with more than 20 years’ experience. She’s the founder and owner of an innovative new renovation design consultancy, creating photo-real renovation concepts for clients looking to visualise their dream renovation before it begins. For more visit cassandrafenaughty.com.

My Renovation reader Nieva asks the following question, “My husband has jazzed up our backyard with lawn and new plants. We painted the back of the house but we took a timber screen off the bathroom window (pictured) as it was too much work to paint or update. Now the back of the house looks plain and boring. Can you please recommend a plant feature or something we could add to the wall between the bathroom window and the door? We are looking for something low maintenance and low cost.”

CASSANDRA SAYS The photo of your house looks really cute, packed with character and potential! Regarding the back of your home, I think some feature plants are a great idea. The plant you choose really depends on aspect, sun and your personal taste. One option, if you are hoping to achieve a formal look, would be a lilly pilly hedge – Syzygium resilience is a great choice that fends off pests well. You can trim it to whatever height you like and it can provide

privacy to your bathroom window. It does not have invasive roots, which is important if you are planting close to the building. Another option is a ginger or heliconia specie. The tropical look is in vogue right now and these are very hardy too. Many of these spread vigorously so if you would like to contain the growth it is recommended to install a root barrier in the ground (600 millimetres deep should be fine) of the perimeter you would like the plant to spread. Heliconia will grow tall enough to provide some privacy to the bathroom and it grows in both sun and shade. I would also recommend to have a smaller feature plant to the left to balance the design, something like a cycad or a group of Philodendron xanadus would work well. I’ve included a photo-real mock up so you can see the Heliconia Hot Rio Nights with the Philodendron xanadus. Thank you for your inquiry. Happy gardening!

DIY tree

In today’s clean and green world, it’s no surprise that some homeowners are looking for an alternative to the traditional Aussie Christmas tree. Here are three ideas to consider.

1

GROW IT Australia is blessed with many native plants so why not invest in one that will continue to thrive into the new year? We like the woolly bush with its branches that imitate that of the traditional pine. Other varieties to try include the lilly pilly and wollemi pine. Of course, once the festive season is over, pop the plant in a pot and reuse the following Christmas.

3

2

STACK IT Book lovers will appreciate this idea! Simply stack and shape a collection of books into a Christmas tree. Drape with sustainable LED or solar lights and you are good to go.

MAKE IT Take the kids on a hunt and gather up fallen branches to create a tree with a difference. Cut the branches into varying lengths. We recommend starting at around 75 centimetres and dropping in size from there – 70-, 60-, 55-, 40-, 30-, 20- and 10-centimetre lengths. String together at equal intervals with thin rope or twine. Hang from the wall and decorate with shells, handmade and wooden ornaments, and eco-friendly lights.

HOUSE STYLES home talk with Emilia Johnston Emilia Johnston is a former magazine stylist who began investing in, building and renovating properties when she was 23. She is the founder and owner of Coast Store, a local lifestyle and homewares business. Coast Store, 67 The Esplanade, Cotton Tree, @coast_store

When undertaking renovations it pays to know what style of home you have. This way your renovations will enhance the existing style of your home. Sticking with the original design of a house typically makes more sense unless you are planning a complete overhaul. While there are hundreds of types of dwelling styles, there are a range of house styles that renovators commonly reference. Knowing and clearly understanding what house style you would like your home to be, will help you make your renovation design decisions. Once you know what style you are going for, research you renovation plans and ensure your design, materials and construction will complement the home style you have chosen.

CONTEMPORARY

QUEENSLANDER

This is a broad term used to define styles of our time. These houses, usually built with simple form and geometric lines, are constructed from rendered concrete, brick or sheeting.

Built on stilts above the ground, they are constructed from timber slats and feature a timber frame and corrugated roof with window hoods, verandahs and doors opening up onto the deck.

CAPE COD

PLANTATION

Growing in popularity this traditional style is a variation on the ubiquitous Hamptons style, in a more symmetrical coast style.

Built in warmer climates, these homes features medium-pitched roofs, elaborate friezes, sometimes shutters and breezy balconies.

FEDERATION MODERN Typified by geometric forms with a flat roof using steel, concrete and glass architecturally modern homes are simple but stylish.

During the early days of white settlement within Australia, buildings based on English styles were introduced and adapted to use more readily available building materials such as timber. This style of housing is observed more in the larger cities of Australia.

BALI FARMHOUSE Cottages and farmhouses typically originated in rural areas and are smaller in size with gabled roof and chimney made of stone or old bricks.

This open-plan pavilion style house features thatched pitched roofs that allow for tropical living. As a result of the Queensland heat, this design has become increasingly popular.

OUTDOORS //

The increased summer temperatures always bring a spike in residential pool sales. Who doesn’t want a backyard pool to cool down in? But first, there are a number of regulations to understand before the project starts.

IMAGE: NARELLAN POOLS

dive in

FENCING A minimum height from the finished ground level to the top of the fence needs to be 1200 millimetres, allowing less than a 100 millimetre gap from the ground to the bottom of the fence. Horizontal rails must be at least 900 millimetres apart if they are on the outside of the pool, or placed inside the pool area if they are less, to prevent children from climbing them to get in. OTHER STRUCTURES If there are existing structures, plants or furniture in the area around where

you wish to locate the pool, you must ensure they do not unintentionally provide an access point for the pool if they were to be climbed. Remember that anything you place near the pool fence effectively reduces the height requirement of that fence. ACCESS You cannot allow access through a door from the house or other building into the pool area. Also, any surrounding windows must not open more than 100 millimetres, or have a security screen fitted.

TIPS //

Our five

top tips Bring a fresh vibe to your home with these ideas.

1 Decorate outdoor lanterns or masonry jars with battery-operated wire lights. It’s an inexpensive and pretty way to bring some Christmas spirit to your table setting or garden.

2

Who says you should only hang one Christmas wreath at a time? Get creative and decorate your door or walls with two or three to create a festive pattern.

Pressed for time but hoping to have the outdoor area shining for Christmas visitors? Mix one-part chlorine with one-part water and pour over the concrete. Allow to sit for 20 minutes and then use a gurney to spray clean. Obviously, there are safety precautions to abide by when using the product so be sure to read your product label carefully and wear closed-in shoes.

Hosting Christmas dinner? Pull out the vinegar and soak that tarnished cutlery. Mix one-part vinegar with eight parts hot water and soak for 10 minutes. Rinse and dry with a lint-free cloth.

Timber furniture in need of a polish? This is our trick for cleaning a solid dining room table: start by giving it a wipe over with a microfibre cloth. Next, use a vinegar and water blend to clean the furniture. Use a clean microfibre cloth to dry.

PAINT //

Old to new The exterior of your home sets the tone for the property. It can also aid in increasing your home’s value and ability to sell. The experts at Dulux believe you don’t have to spend a fortune to boost your home’s curb appeal and bring a less-than-fabulous façade right up to date. All you need to get started are the right tools and a couple of free weekends, depending on the size of your façade and how much prep work is required. PROJECT: front door The team at Dulux share their tips for bringing new life to your front door. 1. Gather your painting supplies as well as Dulux Aquanamel in your chosen colour and Dulux 1Step Prep. 2. After sanding down the surface, apply one coat of Dulux 1Step Prep. 3. Start painting by cutting in around the edges of the door using Aquanamel. 4. Apply to the surface using short, horizontal brush strokes. 5. Once you’ve completed an area, while the paint is still wet, lightly

smooth over the painted section with long brush strokes – but, don’t overdo or reload the brush – a few brush strokes will smooth the surface.

tip For a finish that’s easy to apply and lasts for years, choose a quality paint. We love Dulux Weathershield because it goes on smoothly, dries fast and as it’s self-priming on most surfaces, you won’t need an undercoat.

\\ FINISHING TOUCHES Christmas is the perfect time to indulge a little, which is why we like to scatter bowls of lollies, chocolates, fruit and nuts around the living areas. This threepiece Lago bowl set by Salt&Pepper is great. Each textured bowl is 12x15 centimetres. For local stockists visit saltandpepper.com.au.

Stylish If you can get away with it (ie. You don’t have too many young hands foraging through the tree), glass ornaments really are special. They add a sense of sophistication to your tree and other decorating elements. The Diamond Side glass ornament is from Domayne.

Complement the non-traditional Christmas colour of blue with accents of silver, white or gold.

Add a little sparkle into your Christmas arrangements and table centrepieces with this glittering blue twig from David Jones.
