W
hen I stop and think about the times I’ve felt completely at ease and relaxed, I’m reminded of holidays spent exploring the forests of the Atherton Tablelands. That cool, clean, tree-scented air; the lush green plants home to an endless number of calling birds; water trickling through moss-covered rock streams. I love walks through the Sunshine Coast’s own Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve, the dappled sunlight shining across the dirt path. These experiences leave me feeling serene, and it seems I’m not alone. According to ample research, nature has many positive effects on our mental health. This is the basis of the biophilic design method, which we highlight in this month’s edition. This design centres on shaping the built environment to aid our physical and mental health. It’s about creating a natural connection with environmental elements. I’m sure you will love the theory as much as we do!

Project description: As an operational farm house, built within the confines of a 100-metrelong shed, this project had to take account of many pragmatic factors while still delivering some life-enhancing charm. “One of the great challenges of our time is to bring the beneficial experience of nature into the design of contemporary buildings, landscapes, communities, and cities,” wrote Stephen R Kellert in his book, Nature by Design: The Practice of Biophilic Design. With Australia in the midst of record population growth, high-density living has become the norm. And although these developments often include communal green spaces, there is no avoiding the fact that it encroaches on the natural environment. Backyards are smaller – or non-existent – and many people are time poor, which affects their connection with the world. The biophilic design concept is based on the rediscovery that this connection is a fundamental need for humans. It differs substantially to sustainable design by taking architecture and living beyond environmental impact to a deeper level. Biophilic design aims to lift spirits; it’s about not only relating to, but having contact with the environment. The key is to seamlessly integrate nature into the built environment. It shouldn’t feel forced, or be limited to a few potted plants or open windows. Instead, a successful biophilic design should capture the ‘wholeness’ of a site and feel like a natural progression of space – the two become one. This architectural movement has been proven to have positive effects on mental and physical health.

THE LANDSCAPING Biophilia-inspired homes have to be designed with both the interior and exterior in mind. These two design elements cannot be treated as separate bodies as the built environment should look as though it is a genuine part of the natural environment. The outdoor spaces should aim to reduce stress and mental fatigue, and boost the mood. Water features, natural materials and both annual and perennial plants are well suited. Incorporate native plants that grow at varying heights to create good coverage and a visually appealing effect.
TIP Banksias, bottlebrushes, wattle – there are many Australian native plants to choose from. We suggest talking to your local nursery expert for advice.

Description: This firm was awarded the Emerging Architecture Practice at the 2019 Houses Awards for its suite of projects, including Hawthorn House. The house is defined by two concrete shrouds which provide the framework for how the interior spaces relate to each other and to the external environment. In defiance of its strong formal language, the spatial relationships and experiences of the home arise from a sensitivity to site and context. The Houses judges said, “The work has a strong sculptural quality and boldness, and the purity of the deep design thinking is often illustrated in expressive modelmaking. The poetry of the finished spaces is impressive. Projects, such as Hawthorn House, demonstrate a layering of screens and courtyards to connect inhabitants to the

HIGH STANDARDS Award-winning fashion and interior design guru Adrian Ramsay had humble beginnings, growing up on a farm outside Wellington in New Zealand. Although he lived in a rural town, he developed a passion for fashion and architecture at a young age, sketching the buildings he imagined from scenes in the Wild West novels that captivated him as a 10-year-old. This passion took him one step further when he started designing custom-made formal trousers for his school friends. He didn’t stop here. One thing led to another and the Buderim-based designer is now recognised nationally for his talent, having worked on more than 100 home design projects throughout Australia, England, France, New Zealand and India. Through such diversity, Adrian has developed a deep understanding of design and how it forms an emotional connection between its occupants and the world around them. In August, Adrian Ramsay Design House was named as a national finalist in the Building Designer Association
Australia national awards. It is the first time in the studio’s 20-year history that he has put himself forward for consideration. “The weight of responsibility of delivering a dream to a client that they will live in is always present,” Mr Ramsay says. “No two projects are alike, as are no two clients.” The homes entered into the BDAA Awards are both on the Sunshine Coast – one is nestled on the top of Buderim, the other on the side of the hill at Sunrise Beach.
BUDERIM Brief: To create an ample studio space for exercise, wellness and games, including an indoor flow pool. The building had to fit into the site in front of the home and reflect the architectural style of the existing structures on the property. This was achieved with a unique structure that delivers high function and aesthetics while blending into the environment and delivering on the brief.

Before Designing a teenager’s bedroom is no easy feat – by this age, they have developed their own sense of style and need a room that multitasks as a sleep, study and entertaining space. But with a little imagination and effort, creating a room that ticks all the boxes is possible. Interior stylist Julia Green shows us how. “Colour is your first step,” she says. “It’s the quickest and easiest way to breathe life into a room and will give you the foundation for a space your teen will love.” The original bedroom here was functional but uninspiring, with a green feature wall and very little colour elsewhere. “I loved the room’s architectural features

and wanted to highlight them with paint. I also wanted to ramp up the fun factor with some surprise colour hits and introduce texture and softness for a cosy, welcoming feel.” For inspiration, Ms Green looked to Dulux’s striking Identity palette images (one of four palettes in the 2019 Dulux Colour Forecast). “Filled with bold, saturated brights and clashing patterns, these images are all about confidence and fun, making them perfect for a teen space. “My starting point was a playful, modern artwork in a riot of blue, orange, yellow and black. I hung it above the desk to create a focal point in the room and used the colours to

“Mismatched bedding is all the rage right now” inform the rest of the scheme. “As this is a bedroom and needs to work for quiet times too, I opted for a soft shade for the feature wall – Dulux Wash&Wear in Apricot Fool – and kept the adjoining walls and trims that were already painted in a Dulux Wash&Wear Lexicon Quarter for contrast. “I then introduced louder brights through smaller accents in the bedding, accessories and furniture.” As any parent knows, redecorating a child’s room can be expensive. “Keep the budget in check by upcycling existing pieces where you can – it only takes a few minutes to repaint old furniture and accessories in a fresh colour to give them a whole new look. Here, I’ve painted the top of a plain timber desk with Dulux
Aquanamel in Italian Clay and the drawer in Red Clown. “The bed is the centrepiece in a bedroom, so it was important to get it right. “I added funky, retro-patterned bedding and a dramatic denim bedhead to frame the bed. “Mismatched bedding is all the rage right now – and works brilliantly with this playful look – so I laid the bed with sheets in contrasting colours and piled it high with cushions in different colours, shapes and textures. This also gives it a lounge-like feel, providing a spot for friends to sit when they come over. “When starting a project like this, my top tip is to get your teen involved from the start. Teens have strong ideas about colour and trends and you’ll want their new room to be a space they’ll love. “And be prepared to try something new – a child’s room, which is separated from the main living areas of the home, is the perfect spot to be a little adventurous with colour.”
JULIA’S STYLING TIPS • Use the colours in an artwork as inspiration for your palette. And remember, statement bedding, or a rug, can act as artwork in a bedroom too. • For a fashionable, tonal effect, use the main wall colour in a different strength on one, two or three other elements in the room, such as a desk chair, shelves or bedside table. • If you’re cautious about using a bold colour on the wall, paint a smaller patch first and live with it for a few days. If you change your mind, you can simply paint over it and choose something more low-key. • A teen’s room needs to multitask – include a comfortable bed, sturdy desk and chair for study, somewhere to relax with friends and adequate storage. • Give the bed an on-trend ‘undone’ look; layer it with a doona, sheets and pillow slips from different sets, and finish off with a medley of comfy cushions in a variety of colours and fabrics. • Add a floor rug to anchor the scheme and provide softness underfoot. Dimensions are key; it should be big enough to connect with one or two pieces of furniture in the room, and not so small that it gets lost in the space. Look for a style that picks up on the key colours in the scheme. • Include greenery; a beautiful trailing plant or two on the desk or shelves will bring nature into the room and freshen the air.

CASSANDRA SAYS This is a great one that relates to most people considering a renovation. There are a few key things you can do before you start to give yourselves the best chance for a low-stress renovation. Always get three quotes for your work. You will be amazed at what different quotes can come in at. Often you get what you pay for so if one of the quotes is extremely low, make sure you check what they have or haven’t included. Check out the builders’ work and testimonials. If you can, it’s a great idea to go and have a look at a project recently completed by a shortlisted builder. It is also good to look for testimonials and comments on review pages, Facebook pages and websites.
Ensure you enter into a proper contract with your builder. A registered builder should supply you with a contract that outlines the scope of works and price (for example, a HIA or Master Builders contract). It may also include items such as liquidated damages, which means if the job runs over time you may be able to claim deductions on prices for inconvenience caused or financial losses resulting from the job taking too long. Make sure your builder has the appropriate insurances. You will often need to pay a small fee to cover the insurance for the project. This is worth it for peace of mind. Have plans and or specifications as part of your contract. Plans, concepts and specifications included in your contract help

define the exact scope of works more clearly. Most builder disputes happen with simple misunderstandings of the deliverables expected from the builder. Make sure you know what you want before you start. So many of my clients call me once they have already had a builder start work. Many people think they have an idea of what they want and then due to price or a change of heart they decide to do a redesign once the builder has already started. This adds costs to the project and stress. It is always a good idea to have well-resolved ideas for your renovation before you get quotes. Talking to a renovation design professional will ensure you explore options you may not have considered yourself, and resolve possible problems that may arise. Have a good relationship with your builder and an open mind. Most renovations reveal the odd surprise during the build process. If you have a good relationship with your builder, you can have the discussion to make sure you make well-informed decisions on-the-go. Your tradies are not your enemies; set ground rules before works start. The worst way to start a contract is to criticise and complain to a builder when they’ve only just set foot in your house. Have a budget contingency. Always have a contingency allowance, especially for
renovation work. Fifteen per cent for a residential renovation is a good amount to allow for unexpected expenses. Treat your builder and tradies as you would expect to be treated yourself. If you have precious things you want to protect, you are best to pack them away before work starts or explaining kindly that there are a few things that you feel strongly about. If you have a tree you want to protect in your front yard or a patch of grass that you don’t want tradespeople to park on, pop some barrier mesh around the area and explain to the builder at the start of the contract that you are not trying to be difficult, you just want to protect your grass or tree. Be prepared for a bit of mess and inconvenience. Most renovations are noisy, messy and inconvenient at times. If you are prepared for this it will be far less stressful. Have realistic expectations that this is the way it might be for a few weeks or months. You can always talk to your builder and ask if there are going to be times when it may be better for you to reside elsewhere temporarily. Keep your eye on the goal. Throughout the process, remind yourself and your family that it will be worth it in the end. Tell your builder and tradespeople when you are happy with parts they have completed. Positivity and a few cups of coffee for your builder and tradies will go a long way!

If your pavement is slimy or slippery and moss or algae is evident, treat it first with a suitable outdoor surface cleaner to prevent regrowth.
