hen it comes to community, local businesses in Caloundra know just how important that is. Caloundra is a region of natural beauty, with stunning beaches, parks and attractions – making it an even more special place to live and work.

Many businesses have chosen to call the beachside town home for decades for such reasons, and Shop Caloundra is taking a trip down memory lane, celebrating key businesses that have been integral to shaping the area’s retail footprint.

We speak with some of the business owners who share what they love about operating in Caloundra and what being a part of the local business community means to them.

Caloundra Chamber of Commerce CEO Olivia Sainsbury complements the local businesses and their commitment to great customer service.

“There are currently 550 businesses with the Caloundra Chamber of Commerce with 40 per cent of them in the 4551 postcode. “There are some amazing businesses in the Caloundra region that have stayed extremely strong over the past 20 years. “I believe that the local community has supported these businesses with a buy-local approach. Their success also reflects repeat business from their customers, meaning that customer service is a priority for them,� Ms Sainsbury says.

Selina Smith, owner of Cozie Boutique Swimwear, has been in business for 23 years.

She is also an active member and the secretary of the Caloundra Business Alliance.

She is well known for her tireless behind-thescenes efforts. “The success of so many long-standing businesses is attributed to the amazing community spirit we have in Caloundra,� she says.

the mix of long-standing businesses committed to the region with good old-fashioned service combined with its burgeoning street art scene, plans for a major new hotel complex, and exciting new bars and restaurants opening on a monthly basis that continue to ensure its success. “It’s no surprise top tourism performers Caloundra Holiday Centre and the Queensland Air Museum are amongst the top 20 businesses to celebrate 20 years of business in the area,� Mr Latchford adds.

Benefiting from the area’s consistent tourism trade is Tracey Harris, director of Caloundra Holiday Centre. Her boutique holiday letting company has been helping holidaymakers find their perfect Sunshine Coast getaway for more than 30 years. The Bulcock Street address has remained the same for all of that time and people return to her for their holiday bookings as they know they will be looked after. “We provide generally low-cost holiday accommodation, and a database of over 2000 repeat customers every year, who know and trust us to look after them.�

Ms Harris has lived on the Coast for 50 years and her family has a vast history of business in the town. “When we first moved here, Mum and Dad purchased a block of six holiday units with a jetty and a boat shed where they built trawlers on Maloja Avenue. We also managed Tripcony Caravan Park for the Caloundra Council. “With helping my parents out with their business, I’ve been helping tourists who visit the area for the past half a century now.�

Judy Smith, the director/owner of K Smith & Son Jewellers, and her husband David saw an opportunity to open a jewellery store in the 1980s. “We opened November 1989 at 24 Bulcock Street just in time for Christmas,�

Ms Smith recalls. “In 2012 we moved K S & S to 40 Bulcock Street where we trade today, having our retail shop and workshop at this address. Our daughter Samantha had worked with us on and off since she was 15 years old.

You might say jewellery is in our veins.�

Ms Smith says they are active members or the community and support local charities and groups, with many becoming customers. “Through our association with the Sunshine Coast Turf Club we have also been able to design and make speciality pieces, which we donated to raise funds for charity’s like The Wishlist foundation and The Compass Institute. “We have a lot of local customers, but we also have many customers from interstate and overseas who holiday here; they may own an apartment and come and see us on a yearly basis.�

Caloundra to become the Place2Play You didn’t need another reason to love Caloundra but we have one anyway – Place2Play, where visitors and locals can get up close to artistic activations.

P

layful, artistic activations will soon be popping up on the streets, parks and laneways of Caloundra as a part of Sunshine Coast Council’s Place2Play project.

Council called for expressions of interest from artists to participate in Place2Play earlier this year and an exciting program of thought-provoking and contemporary interaction, art installation and playful participatory activations is emerging.

The 10 Place2Play artists who will be embellishing the streets of Caloundra between February and May are:

• Ashleigh Musk and Michael Smith, emerging choreographers, artists and provocateurs; • Corrie Wright, a transdisciplinary visual artist passionate about visual communication; • New collaborators Mia Hollingworth, a dancer and dance-maker, and Fiona Bryant, choreographer, performer and movement educator; • Kevin McMahon, an artist focused on multidisciplinary investigation; • Penny Gale, interior architect, mother, textile designer and graphic artist; • Samantha Taylor, award-winning architect, exhibition designer, mother and thinker; • Jake Moss, a visual artist, filmmaker, poet, playwright, novelist and stand-up comic; • Kellie O’Dempsey, whose works incorporate projection, video, collage, architectural space, gestural line and digital drawing.

Additionally, visitors can discover a series of small-scale works produced in collaboration with artists Simone Eisler and Russell Anderson. These works will be popping up throughout the CBD area and will provide points of joyful discovery.

Divisional councillor Tim Dwyer says art and creativity are key to Caloundra’s cultural identity.

“Caloundra is emerging as a dynamic creative hub and a place that celebrates, supports and nurtures creative and cultural activities,” Cr Dwyer says.

“I’m excited to see Place2Play coming together and encourage everyone to get out and about in Downtown Caloundra over the coming months to check out the playful activations.”

hispers Cocktail Bar & Lounge opened in mid-January, following what director Lisa Walsh describes as “five months of extensive renovations of the old bank building, over two levels”.

Sophistication meets a relaxed, coastal vibe, with taste bud-tantalising drinks and food offerings. “It’s the type of venue where you can take your time to eat and drink, and experience quality entertainment,” Ms Walsh says.

The venue is home to a baby grand piano, and local pianists and vocalists perform regularly. “Friday and Saturday nights are most popular, with live entertainment, which sees most of the venue singing along to pop and rock classics on the piano,” adds Ms Walsh.

“Wednesdays are our jazz nights, while Sunday afternoons will shortly become a hub for jazz and sax lovers with a lunch/ drink special. People can also enjoy blind whisky tastings and whisky masterclasses.

“The former bank vault was ideal to provide a private room for blind tastings, whisky experiences and whisky flights. The

whisky vault still has its original door and fittings, and has since been fitted with a custom table and lighting, repurposed fence palings on the walls to provide a vintage atmosphere, and a range of pictures showcasing distilleries and whisky-related images from the early 1900s, including a copy of the US patent for the bourbon barrel.”

Functions are a speciality for the team, with booths a popular option. “Several booths accommodate eight to 10 persons at a time, while each of our VIP lounges accommodate 14 to 16 persons each, and can be consolidated to provide a dedicated function area for up to 50 people,” Ms Walsh adds.

The BookShop at Caloundra celebrates 32 years Graeme Bowden and his dedicated team have been sharing their love of the written word with Calounda locals and visitors alike for decades.

G Meet you at the fair The much-loved Caloundra Street Fair continues to grow and expand, and visitors can expect more offerings in the months to come.

ou haven’t visited Caloundra until you’ve strolled through its vibrant markets.

The pristine coastal town is centred around the iconic Caloundra Street Fair, which has brought fun, happiness and a sense of community to locals and out-oftown adventurers since early 2002.

From humble beginnings with just 20 stalls contained in a single block, the Bulcock Street markets have grown significantly over the past 16 years and have entered a positive new era of Sunday trading.

Undergoing an evolution, the Caloundra Street Fair is deservedly earning itself a reputation as the place to be for free family-oriented weekend entertainment on the Sunshine Coast.

Distinct zones have emerged in the market that allow visitors to explore a great range of options with ease as they meander along Caloundra’s high street shopping precinct. From a dedicated kids’

zone, areas filled with new-age artisan items, handmade apparel, food and music found under the tree, and a designated area for new and exciting rotating themed activations, there is plenty to see and do each Sunday in Caloundra.

On top of this emphasis on free family entertainment and themed activations, the Caloundra Street Fair has also invested in new furniture, which allow visitors to more comfortably enjoy the morning, rest sore legs and dig into the tantalising range of street-food options that are available.

Over the next several months, market-goers can expect all sorts of fun and entertaining activities, plus there will be plenty of opportunities for the Sunshine Coast’s creative and quirky to show off their talents.

raeme Bowden is passionate about books. But it’s not just his enthusiasm for books that has made him a respected member of Caloundra's business community. It’s also his desire to support local authors and suggest non-mainstream publications to connect the community to an exciting world of writers and the written word.

It’s been just over three decades since Mr Bowden and his wife Chris purchased the Angus and Robertson franchise in Caloundra. People from all walks of life have visited the Caloundra bookstore. Mr Bowden says one thing everyone has in common is their passion for books and their love for reading, which gets people excited when they step through the door. He’s a big believer in supporting local authors and says that is one of the best parts of his job.

“It was 32 years ago we decided to holiday in Caloundra and it was then that we decided we wanted to stay and make our lives here,” he says.

The BookShop has experienced many challenges over the years but the support of the customers has kept it alive. “It was a big decision for us when Angus and Robertson decided to close their retail outlets to become an independent bookstore, but we are glad that we did,” Mr Bowden says.

He says that one thing he loves is recommending little-known names that become best sellers. “Not much tops it when we recommend a book by an unknown

Graeme Bowden author and it becomes a best seller or other people start asking for it.

“In July/August, we expect to see Caloundra local and now international author Jessica Townsend’s next book come out for middle-grade readers. We are honoured to have had Jessica do two book signings in store so far and look forward to welcoming her back again in the future.”
