HOLDING ONTO HOPE Dr. Tiffany Tyler-Garner’s courageous life journey that led her to sit as the Director of the Children’s Advocacy Alliance (CAA) began many years ago as a young teenager who survived a brutal and traumatizing event.

hile in the 10th grade of high school she was raped at gun point, a terrifying and horrific act that would traumatize anyone. Following this violent attack, fear surrounded her life. She was frightened to go the school’s bus stop, eventually dropped out of school and at age 19, Tiffany became a young mother to a beautiful son. With serious responsibility facing her, Tiffany was determined to give her son the very best in life possible and committed to the challenge of making the necessary changes to achieve her goal. After a failed marriage, she continued to reach. She began by completing her GED adding additional credits to earn her high school diploma. “While these experiences felt like a breaking in some sense, I am equally mindful that they were the making of the woman I would become.” On the advice of a counselor, she attended community college, eventually transferring to the University of Southern California, graduating Cum Laude with two bachelor’s degrees, continuing on to complete a Master’s program and a Doctorate Degree at UNLV. Tiffany’s professional journey began in K-12 education where she provided instructional support to children and families fleeing domestic violence. She con-

tinued this journey, later assisting first generation college students with the transition to doctoral studies under the auspices of the McNair Scholars Program. Tiffany was most impacted by need to ensure safety nets for children and families during her tenure with the Alliance Program, a special partnership between a school district and municipality affording students critical case management and wraparound services as they navigated the challenges of urban learning and education. Recognizing the systemic nature of generational poverty, Tiffany relocated to Las Vegas in hopes of furthering her education to change the trajectory for youth and families in need. Eventually, Tiffany was introduced to Steven Horsford, where she was offered and accepted a position with Nevada Partners, a 10-year journey partnering with Nevadans in education, employment, housing, and civic engagement. Tiffany was promoted to the Chief Operating Officer (COO) overseeing the agency’s program operations; becoming a champion in workforce development. The organization was recognized as one of 30 model workforce development programs by the Obama Administration during Tiffany’s tenure as COO. Continuing on with her commitment to a leadership path that afforded her oppor-

tunities to help others, she accepted an invitation from (Congresswoman) Susie Lee to apply for a position with Communities & Schools of Nevada, an affiliate of the nation’s largest dropout prevention organization. She served as CEO ensuring the provision of case management and wraparound services to over 67,000 Nevada children during her tenure. Later, she was asked by Governor Sisolak to be a Cabinet Member as the Director of the Department of Employment Training and Rehabilitation. Tiffany has performed remarkably well despite heartbreaking experiences along the way. Her hard work and achievements are commendable for the most committed individuals; however, she acknowledges the necessity of creating a community of services to encompass immediate survival needs to achieve these goals for herself and her children. Tiffany is now the Executive Director of the Children’s Advocacy Alliance (CAA) where children’s issues can be heard and acted upon. “I was honored to join CAA. It’s trajectory-changing work!” The Children’s Advocacy Alliance is committed to ensuing children’s safety, education and health, and a legacy of progress for their future. While children may only be a quarter of the population, they are 100 percent of our future. “I learned that changing myself was an inside job but changing the difficult conditions that had impacted me was one that would require others too. While I could lament the loss of my innocence or the heartbreak of divorce, ensuring things like housing stability, food security and mental health requires change across -and within systems, institutions and paradigms. I can’t do it alone. So, now I strive to bring others together around these issues. Every child should be able to live in a safe and nurturing environment that is free from abuse, neglect, and violence. My journey has taught me that change is possible, particularly when we embrace our agency, link arms with others and hold onto hope.” MV By: Dawn Gibbons

MEET THE WOMAN BEHIND SIKARA Aisha is the dedicated founder and co-owner of Sikara Medspa. She also serves as the president. Her husband, Dr. Sheikh, is co-owner and serves as the on-site medical director. They created Sikara Medspa out of a desire to provide a luxury, high-end medspa where people’s needs are not only met, but also understood.

ogether they have two children, ages 11 and 8. Aisha left the world of finance to become a mother to her two boys. As they have grown up, she elected to venture back into the business world, where she strives to make a difference by bringing out the best in people in many ways.

How do you find the time to balance being a mother and being the president of a company? Truly, it is all about the people you surround yourself with. My husband is incredibly supportive, and we share a lot of the responsibilities of raising our sons. Sikara may be a new business, but our team is phenomenal, and each of them are experienced and highly skilled at their respective crafts. I may be “President,” but it really is a team effort. I am so proud of our team and all that they bring to the table.

What made you choose to open a medspa? As a teenager, I had acne. I would say that I have spent the better part of my adult years trying to improve those scars. In my early twenties, I went to see a dermatologist in the LA area. After evaluating my skin, he said “you could be pretty, if you didn’t have these scars.” As the owner of an aesthetics practice, I will never allow any of our clients to be made to feel that way. Beauty, to me, is about much more than your physical appearance; it is about confidence and feeling good about ourselves. Unfortunately, many of us find that our confidence is hindered by what we see as ‘flaws.’ Sikara is about so much more than superficial beauty to me. It is about helping people address their concerns so that they can feel beautiful and confident. They can go out into the world and do everything they want to do without feeling held back by their insecurities. I believe addressing those things allows people to change their lives. It has been tricky learning to navigate through a pandemic; how have you and your company learned to navigate through those challenges to not only sustain, but to thrive? Opening in the middle of a pandemic meant we had to reevaluate how we do things and be strict about our cleaning procedures. We do our absolute best to ensure the safety of our guests and our team. Furthermore, having an on-site medical director not only helps to affirm our commitment to the safety of our guests, but also allows us to provide all aspects of their experience in a safe and effective manner. We do this while still meeting the rigorous standards that are set forth during this historical time.

If you are going to do something, do it properly.” 10

How do we thrive? It is about having the utmost faith in our business and our mission. It is about our team, the services we offer, and the results we help achieve that make Sikara what it is. Any challenges we face do not change who we are. What advice would you give to anyone facing the same challenges you may face? Be adaptable. Surround yourself with people who are willing to work through a challenge and find a feasible solution. Whether it be a pandemic or any other challenge, just be open-minded and think of the big picture. I believe in every area of our lives we must be adaptable and fluid. Things do not always go according to plan, but we must do the best we can in any situation. When I envisioned opening our doors, it was quite different in my head. The pandemic changed things. We made the decision to proceed with our opening and focus on our vision, our philosophy — and allow that to speak for itself. How would you describe your vision for Sikara? Sikara is unique. We are results driven, and our business is transformational, not transactional. You can feel safe and understood; we can help our clients achieve medical-grade results, but in a luxury, high-end, spa-like environment. Medical grade does not have to feel sterile! Sikara is an experience, and I cannot wait for all our guests to enjoy every moment of that experience. What words do you live by? “If you are going to do something, do it properly.” My mother instilled these values in me from a young age and to this day, I firmly believe in that philosophy. I try to incorporate that mantra in every area of my life. It is something I teach my kids as well. I believe that if you take the time to do something, you owe it to yourself to give whatever it is 100% of your effort, otherwise it is just a waste of time. LET’S TALK FOOD Have you ever struggled with your relationship with food?

onstantly obsessing, counting or binging? I have had every struggle you could ever imagine when it comes to food.

A recent example…You can be walking through the store and some bag of cookies randomly jumps in your cart and you can’t put them back because clearly, they want to come home with you and that’s where the struggle begins… Have you ever noticed when you go to the store hungry, you buy a lot of food? Tip 1: Do Not Go to The Store Hungry! Seems so basic but it’s shocking how often people make this mistake. The store is where we set ourselves up for success or failure. I always tell my clients, get your list based on your healthy, yummy recipes this week, eat and then go so you aren’t tempted with random crap. Stay in your whole foods area, such as fruits, veggies, meats and dairy/eggs area. That’s the food you want to be fu-

eled with. Avoid the inner isles unless you have to get something. That’s where the food hides that we shouldn’t overdo it with. Tip 2: Stay Hydrated Our bodies get so out of whack when we don’t have enough water so this is another huge factor that will play apart in our craving world. I buy the gallons of water from the store so I can actually track what I have drank in the day. I feel this is the easiest way to track and yes, people make fun of me for doing it but oh well, I’m more hydrated and feel great. Tip 3: Not Turning A Cheat Meal into A Cheat Week This is my favorite part… CHEAT DAY! Getting my cheat meal… I used to buy mass amounts of food for my cheat day until I realized my eyes are bigger than my stomach by far so my one innocent cheat meal would demolish my entire week or 2.

So instead of buying 8 donuts, 12 sugar cookies, half a gallon of ice cream I now buy maybe a slice of cake from the bakery or a pint of ice cream. I know if I have extra junk food in my house, I will eat it. So biggest part about this is know your limits, be honest with yourself and don’t bring extra junk in the house! The most important part is keeping food that fuels your goals in the house. This is another reason why I recommend keeping a balanced diet. This will help keep your body balanced and cravings down so when you get your cheat treat, you won’t want to overdo it. Quick bonus tip! Try to figure out when you binge most and what is actually triggering it. I found I would binge when I was bored so I would get up and make myself do something productive so I wouldn’t sit around and stuff my face. I found this, and stress, to be the main reason why people binge and it is totally normal but if you want to accomplish your dream body, it is time we figure this out and get things handled for you. Writers always have a deep inspiration. Whether it be what they’ve been through in their life or something new that lights a fire underneath them. In the case of Denise Dixon, it is how she was thinking. More so, her mindset.

enise Dixon is a local Las Vegas author with the passion and commitment to do much more than just writing. How did you get started?

This whole journey started from a blog, when my husband and I started infertility treatments. It was such an emotionally, spiritually, and physically taxing experience. I have always used my creativity as an emotional outlet, so I began writing everything from how I was feeling to the medications I was taking, what I was eating, where we were traveling to, and the shopping trips I was taking to make myself feel better. I had this little online community who were all going through the same triumphs and trials as we were, and it definitely provided some comfort. I was cheered on through every win and comforted through every loss. There was not a single moment in that three-year journey when I felt as if I was the only woman struggling. I knew as our time with IVF was coming to a close that I wanted to pivot this thing I had built. I considered all of the ways I could bring women some Therapie and the boutique space seemed like a no brainer. I wanted to serve women who might otherwise struggle to find unique pieces that fit well. I started online in 2017 while we continued treatments and signed for my first physical space at the end of 2019.

Where did the name Therapie Boutique come from?

My blog was very much my own personal form of Therapie and I continue to write there occasionally to this day. Every time a person asks about our name I am given the opportunity to share little pieces of my story and the issues that brought me here. There is power behind our individual stories and I just happened to turn mine into a brand. I still have a form of the original Blog Therapie, shoptherapie.com online, Therapie Boutique here in Las Vegas, and even a Group Therapie on Facebook.

What can customers expect when walking into your boutique for the first time?

What do you find exciting about your job every day?

I love playing in all the clothes and discovering the fabrics or patterns that make me happy, but I find the most joy in styling women for all of life’s new chapters. I’ve had women come to me after losing a significant amount of weight and needing a new wardrobe, women who need encouragement after a relationship change, and even women who once thought a certain style would never fit

How do you enjoy getting involved in the community?

We all need a little Therapie and it is my prayer every single day that I can spread some of it here in Las Vegas. I am a proud member of Women United. One of my favorite events is our annual suit drive in November where we collect professional wear for local return-to-work programs. I also sit on the Board of Directors for the Las Vegas Fashion Council. Not only do we strive to expand the Las Vegas economy through the fashion industry, but we also provide financial assistance to students and emerging artists through LVFC grants. Here’s what I love about this (another little secret for you)…It’s never as hard as you thought it would be when you look back. It’s the initial uphill climb that is new and uncomfortable that is the reason people quit too soon. Once you realize this and put consistency into practice you can achieve results in anything you choose. While commitment to creating a better you and a better life takes effort and getting temporarily uncomfortable, the opposite of that is even more uncomfortable. Choose your hard. Plastic Surgery is one of the hottest topics and fastest growing segments of the economy. We decided to check In with Dr. Lane Smith and the Smith plastic Surgery Institute to see how Covid-19 has affected this segment of the economy.

Unlike many other businesses, Plastic surgery has been booming in the era covid-19, but like many other businesses, they have had to make several changes in their practice to ensure patient safety and compliance with government regulations. Patient Coordinator with Smith Plastic Surgery, Desiree Collins, said, “We have had to make changes to our policies in order to stay compliant with COVID regulations… We ask that only the patient come to the office visits, all patients must wear a mask, have temperature checks, as well as filling out a COVID questionnairemaking sure that no one entering has had recent exposure. We try to take every precaution to do our part in keeping the number of cases down.” Although they did have to postpone all surgeries in March and April of last year, since then, Smith Plastic Surgery has noticed an increase in consultations and surgeries scheduled. Noting that one of the most common reasons to put off scheduling your surgery is getting the time off for recovery, people having more time off from work or being able to work from home has made it a great time for patients to schedule cosmetic surgery. How to Choose the Best Injector Nevada is often referred to as the “Wild West” but this isn’t something you want when looking for an injector. Injectable treatments like neuromodulators (of which Botox Cosmetic is the most common) and dermal fillers (of which Juvéderm products still lead the pack) are often downplayed as being less serious procedures since they don’t require anesthesia, a hospital setting, or cutting. But the risks with these can be high should you not choose an experienced injector. The point of this article is not to drive you away from doing injectables but to help lead you to a qualified injector. In the right hands, there are very few complications and quick, positive results. However, in the wrong hands, you could be injected with a material that is not approved by the FDA or be injected incorrectly which has led to permanent deformities, blindness, and necrosis (tissue death) in some instances. Choosing the right injector is the most important decision you will make about injectable beauty treatments of any kind. Here are some tips: • Ask about accreditation. This varies by state, but In Nevada, you don’t have to be a nurse, PA, or physician to inject. You simply need to be “in training” in some official capacity. Many people skirt this law by constantly taking one authorized class but never graduate. You don’t want an injector who took a weekend course and has now set up a shop on the corner. • Don’t shop by price. If you wanted a great handbag or special outfit, you wouldn’t start by searching the clearance rack. Don’t do that with your face either. When you call to ask questions, don’t start with, “How much does this cost?” Instead, start with “How is this injector qualified?” • Ask if a physician is involved. Since injectables are seen as simple procedures, many people don’t think they need to be concerned about a physician. But should something go wrong, many times you need a physician involved. Certain injectors in Nevada aren’t allowed to inject hyaluronidase – a substance that can dissolve hyaluronic acid fillers – especially in cases of arterial blockage. And some injectors can’t call in prescriptions, which you may need if there’s an infection. • Have your procedure done at an office. Don’t get injectables done at parties, nail salons, or people’s homes. Cosmetic injectables are medical procedures and any injector who is downplaying the responsibility with these really is downplaying the care for you. • Make sure you feel comfortable. Most injectors will offer consultations. Use this to your advantage. See how the staff is - ask if the staff has been injected! Make sure the office is clean and comfortable. Ask all the questions you have, and don’t feel like you are wasting the injectors’ or staff’s time. Ask to see a consent and make sure the risks are outlined on it. • Realize that these procedures will need to be redone periodically. While it isn’t comfortable to talk budgets, you need to be realistic about what you can afford. If your injector says you need three things for the best result, realize that by only doing one, you aren’t going to be meeting your expectations. Neuromodulators need to be done 3-4 times per year, and fillers need to be done at least yearly in most areas of the face.

American US Federal Magistrate Judge, Stavros Anthony the Mayor Pro Tem, and Donch’e King, State of Nevada Office of the Attorney General (who also sits on the Board at the Richard Steele Foundation). There were also 10 chaplains in attendance who walked with white candles to an acoustic version of “Dream On” to pay tribute to the thousands of youths lives that have been unnecessarily lost in the system. Dr. Feneck also presented each chaplain a certificate of appreciation. Following a night filled with heartwarming stories and our community paying it forward, Dr. Feneck is excited to share that the 3rd Annual Juvenile Justice Impact Gala will be held on October 16th, 2021. Dr. Feneck is also assembling a task force to implement preventative measures and programs that can help prevent children from being dragged into the system, rather than damage control later. Dr. Feneck is determined about holding the galas each year, not to dazzle and wear dresses, but to create an outcome and affect change in a system that accepts status quo. How long have you lived in Las Vegas and how did your career begin in Luxury Real Estate?

I have lived in Las Vegas for 41 years. In 2005 I joined the Shapiro and Sher Team, which was the Premier Luxury Real Estate team headed by the late Florence Shapiro. Florence was Las Vegas’ leading Luxury Specialist and I was incredibly blessed to be afforded her wealth of knowledge coupled with her intuitive understanding of her client’s needs. She possessed awe-inspiring grace and her smile lit up a room! She could also be quite firm when she needed to be, which worked to her and her clients’ advantage. We often referred to her as “The Iron Fist in a Velvet Glove.” They just don’t make ‘em like that anymore. How do you prepare a home to go to market?

After touring the home and deciding to take on the listing, I ask my clients to make sure ALL lighting, inside and out, is in proper working order, including pool and landscaping lighting, as lighting is KEY! I also ask that any fountains be in working order, remove clutter from counter tops and shelving. We want to have the potential buyers imagine their items in the home. I provide my clients with tips for creating an inviting space, as first impressions are EVERYTHING!

What do you recommend to buyers who are looking to relocate to Las Vegas?

First off I would say, “Welcome!” Secondarily, I’d ask them if they prefer city life, rural or suburban living. Then I would drive them through the areas that may be suited to their lifestyle. I would also share with them the many wonderful things Las Vegas has to offer including hiking in the gorgeous Red Rock mountains and if they would like to

see snow, but not live in it, there’s our beautiful Mt. Charleston! Having lived in Las Vegas for over 40 years, I feel I have a wealth of information to share with folks looking to relocate to Las Vegas and I am always excited to show them!

How is the current Luxury market standing with the pandemic slowdown?

Funny enough, the Luxury market has done quite well during this crazy time! We are getting many buyers from California and other states with cost of living increases. Vegas offers much more bang for the buck, even in Luxury, as opposed to California and other states with high tax rates. Affluent buyers are seeing the benefits of changing their address to Nevada and we welcome them to our GREAT city, however, please leave the taxes behind you! ;-)

Any exciting business or personal ventures coming in 2021?

Like everyone, I am excited for the future!! I am looking forward to putting this virus in the rearview! MARKET UPDATE: CLOSING ESCROW ON 2020 Economic recession as a result of the global COVID-19 pandemic has affected over 188 countries and territories.

his current health crisis ultimately evolved into an economic crisis, with the highest unemployment rates since the Great Recession. With COVID-19 the stock market crashed, and housing markets froze, choking the economy. To support this lagging economy, economic stimulus plans, homebuilder sentiments, record low interest rates, and many other programs were implemented. Through the CARES Act, we saw a stimulus package totaling $2.3 trillion, the largest stimulus package in the past 50 years. The recession in 2001 saw the airline industry receive a $15 billion stimulus package, the Great Recession saw two stimulus packages totaling $1.5 trillion. Currently, we are seeing the economy and other traditional economic indicators begin to return to pre-pandemic levels, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average even reaching a new record high of 30,000 points. With this current market rally, we’re facing the end of 2020 with a new perspective on the distribution of wealth around the globe. In the United States, CoreLogic has reported that the housing market is back on track and has even outperformed last year records. This positive trend is even expected to continue. Record low mortgage rates remain low, further enticing new homebuyers and stimulating demand. This coupled with low inventory rates ensures that home prices not only stay strong but also strengthen. CoreLogic also forecasts a continued growth in nationwide home prices, maintaining an overall positive trend through the next year. In Las Vegas, we’ve seen an increase in median prices for single-family homes increase by 10.8% and an increase of 8.9% for condominiums and townhomes compared to October 2019. October sales were up by 11.2% for homes and up 9.5% for condos and townhomes

as well. The number of homes available for sale however has decreased by 45.3% compared to last year. In October, Las Vegas had roughly a 1.5-month supply of homes available for sale, a sign of a local housing shortage. It is also important to note that of all the properties sold in October, 19.2% of purchases were made with cash, near the nationwide average of 18%. The Great Recession saw a cash sale rate of 59.5% in February of 2013, indicating a strong involvement of investors. Distressed sales continue to remain low as well, with Las Vegas REALTORS© (LVR) reporting that short sales and foreclosures were just 0.9% in October. Three years ago, those figures were closer to 2.4% and 5.2%. NAR (National Association of Realtors) also reports that nationwide distressed sales make up only 1% of all sales. btain Your Real Estate Salesperson License: State of Nevada requires 90 hours of Nevada Real Estate Division-approved education courses. These courses can be taken in person or online. It is recommended to find a school that offers test preparation assistance to help you study for the exam.

After you register for schooling, you should immediately start your background check and fingerprinting process (visit red.nv.gov for details), this step can be time consuming, so starting it right away can help assure it will arrive by the time your schooling is complete. You will also need to find a broker prior to having your license issued. Research

brokerages, and remember that training is essential, make sure that you are choosing a brokerage that offers a lot of support to help guide you in the right direction. Look for Giants: Your office may have a mentor or coaching program available. Don’t overlook this, Real Estate is a tough business, finding someone to lead you down the right path is INVALUABLE and can set you up for success in the future. Many top producing agents are swamped these days, and would be happy to allow you to host an open house on their listings, assist with buyer showings, or even shadow to help with basic organizing and paperwork. Meanwhile, you get to watch and learn from the best!

Take as many training classes as you can cram in, especially if they are agent taught. There are also numerous podcasts such as “Real Estate Rockstars” that offer strategies, tips, and marketing tools for free. Don’t Be a Secret Agent: When I started my career, I would not go home each day until I had handed out a minimum of 10 business cards. Set a daily contact goal. Tell everyone about your new career. HOW TO LEGALIZE YOUR UNDOCUMENTED HOUSEMAID

ou’d be surprised how often someone asks me that question in my practice. More remarkable is the tone of enthusiasm and altruism in which most of them do. It’s as if they take for granted that, as their employers, they can spare their housemaids from living in the shadows. That doesn’t surprise me. After all, besides employing an undocumented immigrant, most are successful, hard-working, law abiding US citizens who see their housemaids as part of their family. They know her story and why she had no choice but to cross the border in search for a better future for her and her children. She brings nothing but joy and support into their homes. The kids love her and she loves them back as if her own. She knows what makes them argue with their spouses and what brings them back together. They simply can’t imagine their lives without her. Some have confessed to live terrified about the day they may have to tell the kids that they took her away and there was nothing they could do about it. No one likes to be the bearer of bad news, but unfortunately, there’s almost nothing they can do to legalize her status. At least not as their employer. “But there must be something we could do,”

they say with a broken heart. “There are many ways and options to legalize, employ and help immigrant friends and workers of all levels”, I say, “but just as with our health, the best medicine is prevention. However, even when prevention is no longer possible, consulting with an immigration attorney is the key. I’ll do my best to help you.” Whether you are reading this because you have that exact situation or not, I’m glad I have your attention. It is time to talk openly about immigration in Las Vegas. Not just from a social point of view, but also as the economic and business opportunity immigrants represent in our beloved city and across the United States. Did you know that one in five Nevada residents is an immigrant? The top country of origin is Mexico, with thirty nine percent. Followed by Philippines with fifteen percent, El Salvador with four, Cuba and China with three percent each. That’s a lot of people! Don’t you think? Now let me ask you this: What was the first thing that came to your mind when you read the last paragraph? Did you see a problem, or did you see an opportunity?

It is time to talk openly about immigration in Las Vegas.” No worries, no one will ever know your answer, but if you run a business, provide a service, or simply believe that diversity enriches our community of Las Vegas, I’m certain that your answer is the latter. You are right! Immigrants are our friends, neighbors, business owners, professionals, workers and of course, consumers. Now, you may be asking yourself: How can I take advantage of this gigantic opportunity? Well, my dear reader, that answer can take a whole evening of exciting conversation! I’m running out of page here but let me at least give you a glimpse into the wonderful world of family and business legal immigration to the US: Adjustment of Status – Even if an immigrant has been living or working illegally in the US for years, if she entered the US legally and is the immediate relative of a US citizen, she could apply to adjust (legalize) her status as a US permanent resident. (continued on next page)

Unlawful Presence Waiver – A person who entered the US illegally or overstayed the time allowed by a visa for more than a year, worked without authorization in the US but is not the immediate relative of US citizen, will become inadmissible to the US for a period of ten years after she departs the US. However, if that person is married to, or is the son or daughter of a Legal Permanent Resident, she can apply for a waiver of inadmissibility. That will allow her to avoid the ten years penalty and apply for US permanent residence.

That’s just a handful of examples of the many options available to legalize or otherwise petition a foreign family member, employee or business partner to live and work legally in the US.

Just remember, get the right advise from your Las Vegas immigration attorney before making any decision that might affect the outcome of your case.

TN (NAFTA) Visa – Allows US employers to hire Mexican and Canadian national professionals to work as employees in their US businesses. Because of the North American Trade Agreement (NAFTA), US consulates use a simplified process to evaluate and approve TN visas, so that you may fill your businesses` vacant positions fairly quickly. EB3 Permanent Worker Visa – Employers in the US can petition foreign workers when there is a shortage of qualified US candidates to fill the business’ vacancies. This visa is available for professionals, skilled and unskilled laborers. L-1 (Intra-Company Transfer) Visa allows a foreign executive, supervisor, manager or employee with specialized knowledge, to transfer from a subsidiary enterprise abroad to work in the US parent business. E-2 Investors Visa – This visa allows you to form partnerships with entrepreneurs of certain countries who invest in a new or existing US business. This visa allows the foreign business co-owner and her family, to move into the US to direct and grow the business. It may be used with traditional businesses, franchises and technology start-ups.

COVID,WHERE DOES LIABILITY FALL? As we continue to ride the train of COVID, we still have many questions about the virus and the impact on every aspect of our daily lives. Of course we are continuing to social distance, stay home and mask up, but there is still the chance of contracting the virus. One questions that arises is, what are the legal repercussions of giving someone COVID?

he potential spread of COVID isn’t likely going to land you a well standing lawsuit. You may be fully convinced this person has passed the virus to you, but unfortunately, it’s almost impossible to confirm without full proof that the defendant did something wrong and a provable link between the misconduct and the plaintiff’s injury. As the virus affects a very large amount of the population and is so easily spread, it is extremely hard to pinpoint one specific infectious person. While you’re not likely to be participating in a lawsuit for merely contributing to the spread of COVID, that does not excuse the possibility of facing legal trouble by not following set COVID guidelines. As an example, Nevada OSHA has issued citations and penalties for many establishments in August of 2020 for not following face covering orders, totaling about $229,661 in proposed penalties.

At the end of August 2020, government officials conducted about 360 initial visits at a range of business sectors finding 92% compliance rate in northern Nevada and a 90% compliance rate in southern Nevada. Sparks at 86%, Las Vegas at 87%, and Fallon at 87% fall below the state average, while Fernley, Gardnerville, Henderson, Lovelock, Mound House, New Washoe City, North Las Vegas, Stateline and Virginia City all fall at 100%. You may find yourself in a situation where you would need to report a business for violating COVID guidelines. Nevada has established hotlines for people to file complaints with businesses that are not following new guidelines. You may call these violations in at (702)486-9020 and (775)688-3700. Julia Peek, deputy administrator for Nevada’s Community Health Services comments on the plan, stating that “traditional public health outreach and targeted interventions with strong enforcement strategies to ensure compliance.”

Along with COVID violations leading into legal trouble, let’s take a look at some other lawsuits. Many workers’ compensation claims are being filed by workers who have contracted COVID while on the job. There have also been some lawsuits filed against the Chinese government alleging that China’s response to the virus outbreak damaged many Americans. Many insurance companies have been filed against for not clearly defining protection against losses by COVID. In some special situations, there have been some lawsuits filed against federal, local and state governments. Some of these cases claimed that the governments were negligent in how they handled the outbreak, while some claimed that quarantine and closures of non-essential businesses are illegal or unconstitutional. There were also many lawsuits filed against companies like cruise lines, airlines, nursing homes, assisted living facilities, healthcare facilities, hotels and daycares. MV By Lexi Sims

some lease terms and locations that it needs to close and vacate, allowing the business to terminate leases for undesirable locations and to restructure lease terms for locations that it wants to keep. Under this process, the business owner can retain ownership and control over the business and restructure all debt through plan payments from disposable income over a 3 to 5 year period. Mortgage liens can be reduced to the property’s fair market value, and any loan balance in excess of the value is treated as unsecured debt. Also, the process is much quicker than a Chapter 11 bankruptcy, which could take years due to infighting. For example, when a prominent Las Vegas casino filed for bankruptcy protection, the corporation had $11 million in working capital. Since it took years, by the time a plan was approved for reorganization, the $11 million had been spent on legal fees for all of the parties. Subchapter 5 only requires that the debtor pay their own legal costs and Subchapter 5 requires an expedited plan to be implemented within three to six months of the filing. This new protection by the law can save many businesses, especially those operated by families with several generations. Many multigenerational businesses employ parents, adult children, and possibly grandchildren. EL IMPACTO ECONÓMICO LATINO

Los latinos hacen una enorme contribución a la economía de Las Vegas. El impacto de la contribución es fácil de ver. Los latinos representan el 32% de la población del condado de Clark y ese número probablemente aumentará una vez que se informen los resultados del último Censo.

VEGAS HIT MAN FRANKIE MORENO

I would like to take a moment to thank my friend Mark Shaffer for giving me an opportunity to share with you a look into the lives and careers of some of my friends in the entertainment industry, from a fellow entertainer’s perspective. I am very happy and proud to be a new member of the MYVEGAS family as the new Entertainment Editor!

020 was the year in which those of us in our industry essentially said goodbye to each other for longer than any of us could have imagined. While some of us took this break to simply stop everything for the first time in decades to recharge, others got busy making the best of this unique and eventless set of circumstances. My friend and well-known local favorite singer/songwriter Frankie Moreno has done just that. Famous for his electrifying live concerts all over the world, wide ranging musical abilities and devilishly charismatic on-stage charm, Frankie has become something of a phenomenon in the music industry. Over the past several years, we have seen Frankie Moreno go from the intimate lounge setting to headlining major Vegas strip casino Showrooms, to selling out Carnegie Hall, The Kennedy Center and The Hollywood Bowl just to name a few. He has been nominated for an Emmy for his national television appearances and has been voted “Headliner of the Year” here in Las Vegas

5 times. Then along came 2020, and like for so many of us, the stage lights went out. In this past year, while many of us in our business sat on the couch eating too much and licking our wounds, Frankie had decided to make the best of this new “distant” existence. When asked in mid-December what this past year meant to him and his loyal addicted fan base, he shared with me something rather remarkable to say the least. “I suppose once I saw that all the live shows and tours were getting cancelled, I knew I had to do something to stay sane. I rely on the energy and connection with a crowd, so I figured releasing music could keep us all connected. I’ve literally been blown away with the amount of support coming in for us. Two years ago, we started making a whole string of albums, 11 total, in fact. Each would far outsell the last. A few gold records and seeing ourselves in billboard magazine every month pushed us to keep going. Four of the albums reached the number one spot

in Billboard. Out of the 31 singles we’ve released this year, 28 have hit the number one spot. I’m told we are first to ever have that many in one year. I believe we are third in line for the most ever in history. I thought we would do a couple singles and get back to touring… but here we are. Now that we have 28 (in mid-December), I suppose why not go for 100! The record is 60 held by George Strait.” I certainly wish my friend continued success either back on stage or continuing this unprecedented string of hit releases that are enjoyed by fans from around the globe thanks to iTunes. A global pandemic has just shut down the city of Las Vegas. This is an unprecedented historic moment where everyone is having the same reactions. Beyond the fear of the virus itself, of which there are so many unknowns, is the question of resources.

ur basic needs are (mostly) met, but what about this, that and…. oh YES. How could you forget – Cannabis!

“People absolutely needed cannabis more than ever during those crucial stressful weeks,” says Apothecary Shoppe Manager, Gina Watson. “First there was a mad rush of customers trying to make it in before midnight on the night of the Governor’s order. Then the phone started ringing off the hook and hasn’t stopped since.” Luckily, cannabis, and not just medical cannabis, was declared essential by the governor’s order. The only stipulation was that it must be delivery only. The team went right to work putting together a plan. “We didn’t have a delivery service going at the time of the shutdown because it was only allowed to private residences, and due to the nature and location of our business, the majority of inquiries we had was for tourists at local hotels,” says Libby Hornschemeier, Senior Director of Operations and Financial Controls. “But we had a staff full of dedicated employees who were willing to pivot and become drivers, call center operators, whatever it took.”

“I think the thing I am most proud of is that we never skipped a beat,” says Watson. “Every day I would go in and put in 12, 13, 14 hours… I did if for the staff. I wanted to get as many people I could back to work as soon as possible. We had targets to reach to do that.” Getting product in the hands of the customer was the most important goal. Although Las Vegas has seen recreational cannabis thrive since 2017, The Apothecary Shoppe does have medical roots that they are proud of. “People are seeking the cannabis plant’s effects for basic alleviations, such as stress relief, sleep aid, and appetite stimulant. I find this to be the case whether they have a medical card or not. And during this time of crisis, it made me feel good to be able to bring this small relief, quickly to the doors of stressed Las Vegans,” says Watson. “I really liked getting to know the city,” says The Apothecary Shoppe veteran Greg Golonka. “I’ve lived here over 25 years and there were still streets I didn’t know about, or neighborhoods I hadn’t seen. And the people were good to us. I’m glad I was able to do it.”

“I think I can say I have worn every hat possible around here now,” says Casey Silvas, although a hat would hide her signature red mohawk. Casey is the Cultivation facility’s Operations Coordinator but spent weeks during the shutdown delivering to local homes, picking up phones, and putting in orders. She is one of the shop’s longest standing employees, along with Anthony Tenorio, who turned from being budtender to mobile “guide”. “All of the employees stepped up and have never hesitated to do what it takes. And I am proud of them for that,” says Hornschemeier. Through all recent strategic efforts, The Apothecary Shoppe has garnered some notable successes as of-late, with September deliveries averaging about 13% of their overall business; having completed over 1130+ deliveries in total. Additionally, the store has been able to offer patients over 100 new products, since this past March. And in this case, it comes in a small, but mighty package. a big part in connecting people to these life changing resources. Wendy shares the story of a homeless, blind female veteran with a sight dog who was rescued by Henderson Police. Wendy connected her with Arnold Stalk with Veteran’s Village, who was able to provide her a small apartment 5 steps away from a dog park for her fur buddy. It really shows how valuable connecting with the right people can truly make the difference in someone’s life, jumping in at exactly the right time.

Kathryn Hooper, the Director with the City of Henderson Resource Resiliency Center, is the caring resource that runs out to help people who have nowhere else to turn. Denise Marshall, with The Trauma Recovery Center, plays a big part in helping to connect those in need as well. Denise says, “When working to find resources for veterans, the homeless, those with mental illness or facing a catastrophic loss, Wendy is the beacon of light for those in their darkest hour. Her compassion and level of patient care is exactly what our community needs right now.”

An incredibly caring individual, her empathetic habits flow into her personal life as well. Not only did she raise her family as a single mother, she also opened her home to 7 foster children. Wendy saw foster children who needed a safe, loving home to heal from their trauma. In staying with biblical principles, she spends her time taking care of elderly and foster children. “One person can help change a life, even save a life just with one phone call,” avows Wendy, a firm believer in her faith and her purpose.
