Ask a Top Doc: Why Medical Marijuana for Cancer Treatments?

By Dawn Gibbons

W

hy would a group of outstanding and well-respected physicians decide to open a medical marijuana dispensary? I asked that question to a gynecologic oncologist that heads the group, which includes Drs. Rachakonda Prabhu, Geoffrey Hsieh, Sean Dempsey and Nick Thanos. The team had good reasons for making the plunge into medical marijuana and it was all based on the well-being and health of their patients. Nick M. Spirtos, M.D. leads a group of physicians that treat ovarian, colon, uterine, breast and cervical cancer. In addition, he serves as a clinical professor at Touro University College of Osteopathic Medicine and adjunct clinical professor at the University Of Nevada School Of Medicine. Other physicians in the ownership group treat patients with a variety of conditions including many that were not responding to conventional medical treatment, in particular a variety of chronic pain conditions. Dr. Spirtos’ passion is treating women with cancer. The words, “you have cancer” are just the beginning of a difficult journey that this compassionate doctor must share with a patient. He knows far too well that their treatment will likely include all or a combination of surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation of which each alone carries side effects. The biggest obstacle for the patients is their ability to complete treatment because of the side effects associated with these therapies. Dr. Spirtos states that, “90% of chemo patients have problems with nausea and vomiting despite all the advances in anti-emetics. Sixty percent of chemo patients do not complete their treatments because of side effects. Patients use standard anti-emetics for nausea and vomiting or opiates for pain control, but frequently these efforts were unsuccessful. Some of Dr. Nick’s success stories arose from patients that were self-medicating by smoking marijuana or ingesting ‘pot brownies’.

Unfortunately, these patients were forced to break the law just to make their medical treatment more tolerable! Patients undergoing additional surgery or chemotherapy had the most difficult time controlling pain, nausea and vomiting. According to Dr. Spirtos, “not only could cannabis potentially reduce the side effects related to pain and nausea and vomiting but reducing opiate intake in particular, could decrease potential liver toxicity in both cancer patients and those with chronic pain.” He then added “however, it all had to be done legally.” And, that is the reason this doctor that hails from a family lineage of 27 outstanding physicians decided that he could help patients by getting involved in medical cannabis. The Apothecary Shoppe opened in December 2015 and is a medical marijuana dispensary tailored specifically to the patients. It offers medical marijuana in a variety of pleasant forms that are easily palatable like chocolates, syrups, cookies, and other edible delights. And, there is always a physician available to answer any questions. There are also clinical studies open to patients undergoing chemotherapy or with chronic pain using a syrup developed by the physicians that has been shown in preliminary work to be quite effective. The syrup is absorbed rapidly and has a more predictable absorption than baked goods.

However, there are some challenges when deciding on utilizing any of the medical marijuana treatments. One must apply for a card through the Nevada Medical Marijuana Program (NMMP). The patient must have a physician’s approval and deal with other red tape like notary, etc. To make it easier for someone reading this I have included the state site for registering. https://mmportal.nv.gov/PatientRegistryOnline/ PatientRegistryOLCreateLogin Nevadans go through the process of a background check. I understand approval takes about 8 weeks. Upon authorization the patient must go to DMV to get their medical marijuana card. Most of us know what a trip to the DMV is like! How about standing in a long line while you are sick, nauseated and vomiting from your treatments? That’s some tough medicine for someone going through cancer treatment! Apparently the state is making some progress in this regard. The bottom line is if a cancer patient gets a diagnosis they probably are going to need treatment right away as most cannot wait two months for government approval. Since this is the political season, many legislative candidates will be knocking on the door asking for your vote and this may be an issue you will want to discuss with them. MV

Sleep Your Way to the Top

Escape into a world of total comfort, relaxation, and rejuvenation. Treat

Violeta’s Organic Spa

By Marie Mortera KSNV Anchor Facebook: mariemortera Twitter: mariemortera

T

he “sleep your way to the top” advice comes from media icon Arianna Huffington, who believes sleep is pivotal to success. I agree. I usually get 7.5 hours of sleep every night, PLUS I carve out time for a long siesta on Saturday and Sunday. If I don’t, I will undoubtedly feel lethargic, unfocused and unhappy. Bottom line: I need my restoration! In April, UNLV students experienced the power of the nap as part of a traveling social experience called The Sleep Revolution College Tour. On social media there is a #sleeprevolution hashtag. MetroNaps, a company that makes nap pods, brought naptime to the students with the belief that taking a mind and body pause will pay off in class with increased alertness. That performance upgrade can be seen when we get physical too. MetroNap’s CEO Christopher Lindholst tells me napping has been shown to prevent injuries in athletes. Getting less than a 30-minute snooze can aid “memory consolidation,” which he says helps you remember a new muscle movement, like a golf swing. As for when you should take that brief nap, it comes down to when you exercise: a morning routine should be followed by an afternoon snooze. An afternoon workout should be led by a pre-workout nap. As for how you get started, Lindholst says “Eliminate distractions, put your feet up to relax your cardiac system and aid circulation and use a napping cue like listening to the same music every time. This will help you relax faster.” With that, I wish you sweet dreams, a sweet workout and success! MV

f you’re older than 30, chances are you’ve started to see little trails of aging present as you find strands on your pillow and right after a shower your tub looks like a Chewbacca washing scene. Imagining a bald scalp, sets in mental panic, even more so if you’re female. Although hair loss and thinning can be disturbing for both genders, its societal link with beauty can be more devastating for women. Thankfully, the beauty industry has perfected ways of thickening and lengthening with faux hair. In Vegas, the popularity of this is even greater due to the entertainment sector. According to Anna Nichols, owner of Bomb Hair, “because this is an image based city most of my clients are in night life whether it be dancing, performing, basically service industry women. Those girls rely on the way they look to make their money. They’ll pay me to do their hair before they pay their rent.” It’s no surprise that women will shell out big bucks to maintain their beauty, which is also a large factor in self-esteem. However, the cost of this physical and mental benefit can range $400 and up, plus maintenance. Hair extensions are the forte of Bomb Hair which opened its doors about four years ago. At this locale, Anna and her stylists utilize “virgin hair,” non-treated human hair, considered best quality for extensions. Placement methods vary per customer such as; small attachment beads, tape, braiding, clips, or glue. They last 2-6 months depending on type and care. In order to minimize the risk of hair loss

10

called traction alopecia, or damage, its best to find an extension specialist like Anna. However, it’s prudent to give your hair a break and have periods of time styling natural locks. Faux hair that doesn’t attach directly to natural hair provides a great breather alternative. With 48 years of experience, Jane Wilson, of Wigs on the Move, offers a variety of such. Jane became interested in wigs in the 60’s while doing research to help her mother-in-law with hair loss. Yet, her expertise in wig fit, placement, styling, and cut became solidified by chance circumstances. “In 2005 I had a salon where I was selling wigs and I was also a volunteer for the American Cancer Society. I saw these women had a need for wigs, but often they were not healthy enough to get out and about, so I started a mobile wig service,” said Jane. Since then, Jane’s services have graced hospitals, senior centers, funeral homes, and salons. As with extensions, wig prices can range anywhere from $40-$4,000, depending on the type of hair used and the quality of the cap. Synthetic hair pieces will be cheaper, but often fray and tangle, thus lasting only 6-months to a year. Real hair pieces may last 4-5 years and give the versatility of using heat and hair products. Yet, for patients who have medically induced hair loss, wigs may be covered by insurance if a clinician’s note advises of the need for a “prosthetic device.”

e all love to travel. But when making your travel plans, what do you look for in a great hotel? Personally, I like hotels that offer great amenities not just in their public areas but in their rooms too. Chances are you haven’t given much thought to those little shampoos, lotions and soaps in your room, but thanks to popular demand individual properties as well as major hotel chains are starting to pay attention to customer requests and are now focusing their efforts on brand-name products rather than settling for a generic brand. Here are just a few major hotel chains and what they offer: Renaissance Hotels: Aveda - One ounce bottles of Aveda’s highlights including their scalp-tingling Rosemary Mint Shampoo and Conditioner, Energizing Body Cleanser, and their rich All Sensitive Moisturizer cream

Tammy Kincaid

Hilton Hotels & Resorts: Peter Thomas Roth - Vitamin-packed Mega-Rich collection of shampoo, conditioner, body lotion, and body wash, as well as the brand’s Moisture Infusion Facial Bar and Massage Body Bar Peninsula Hotels: Oscar de la Renta - Citrus and floral musk unisex fragrance with notes of mandarin, bergamot, freesia, and cedar, developed with Firmenich, and produced in association with Gilchrist & Soames Just remember wherever your travels take you, don’t feel shy about enjoying these amenities long after your stay. Do Fasted Cardio - When you wake up you are already in a fasted state so if you do your cardio on an empty stomach your body has no other choice but to go to your fat reserves as your energy source. Cut out the Sugar and Diet Sodas - Sugar is one of the most widely abused drugs out there. Sugar and diet sodas stimulate your insulin response causing you to store more fat. Water should be your main source of hydration. Many think that because it says the word “Diet” that it is better for you but you might as well have the real thing. Lift more Weights - You won’t look “Bulky” or get too big. Especially Women, it just doesn’t work that way. The only thing you WILL DO is get stronger. As Dr. Oz says, “Frailty is what KILLS us.” So, pick up those weights. Start out at a weight you are comfortable with and increase it by 5-10 pounds each week or two. Meditate - Your mind is part of your body too. We have to keep it healthy. I have never met anyone that said, “I don’t have a lot of stress in my life.” Stress can cause many health problems and is even linked to Cancer. Go on Youtube and search “Guided meditation” for different videos to help you learn how to meditate. MV

MY BEAUTY & HEALTH

You Make Me Feel So Young

W

hen people look in the mirror they want to be happy with what they see. If they are not happy, they want to know what they could do to change it. That’s where Dr. Edward Zimmerman at Las Vegas Laser & Lipo comes in. At Las Vegas Laser and Lipo, they specialize in procedures that make you feel good when you look in the mirror. Things like liposuction, natural breast & buttocks augmentation with fat transfer, laser blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery), facelifts, skin rejuvenation, non-surgical body sculpting, liquid facelifts with various fillers, Botox and Dysport just to name a few. Las Vegas is the epicenter for looking good and many people don’t just want to, but also have to. Many jobs in various industries today rely on appearance. It is imperative they look their best as their income depends on it. Practice Administrator, Marilyn Zimmerman elaborated on a few procedures. “Liposuction is not limited to just tummies. “Liposuction is not limited to just tummies. All body areas can be treated, including the fat under the chin. For the fat transfer procedure it is common for women to transfer from belly to breast and buttocks. For Mommy makeovers we take the fat from the

tummy or thighs and put it in the top portion of the deflated breast, re-creating cleavage. They get their body shape back with a little bonus.” “Liquid FaceLifts are the treatment of choice for volume correction in the face. Clients will come in with pictures of when they were younger and Dr. Zimmerman can recreate their youthful image.” MYVEGAS Magazine publisher, Mark Shaffer wanted a procedure like this for ten years. Marilyn noticed immediately that Mark had a lot of energy and was full of life. He expressed to her there was so much in life he still wanted to do and as a musician, as well as performing on stage in front of audiences, he felt he needed to look better. Each year that passed his exterior did not match his youthful spirit and heart. Eight years after the wrong marriage, Mark was free to make himself happy. Thanks to a billboard that got Mark’s attention, he decided to schedule a consultation. “I was extremely impressed with the office and the professionalism of the entire staff. Marilyn made a presentation that explained the entire process from pre-op, surgery and recovery.” After seeking credentials and with more than enough

positive reviews Mark still had trepidation. “My biggest fear was wondering if the surgery would really work and remove the bags from under my eyes,” Mark said. Today, he is more than happy about the procedure he underwent and the recovery was so quick, he was even able to perform at Blue Martini the following week. “Not only did it give me the results I wanted, everyone around me noticed as well. Within the first year all my friends told me ‘You look younger every time I see you.’ I received more compliments in that first year than I had in the last ten years on my appearance. It gave me more confidence, it made me feel better about myself and I knew I did the right thing.” Clinical psychologists say people do better in life when they look better which in turn makes people feel better. People are often in tears after they see their results. It’s like taking away the past 20 years. The common statement is ‘you make me feel so young!’ as they are hugging Dr. Zimmerman. When you help someone achieve a goal they naturally feel good about themselves. It improves how they see the world and how people see them. MV

every experience I have had. Knowing and understanding yourself is the greatest gift you can invest in. YOU are worth more than any object you are willing to buy at any store.”

“The doctor sounded like I was never going to live my dreams as a professional dancer,” Gina said. He expressed the severity of the situation. “I felt like I was not good enough, I was in a lot of pain, and I had to wear a back brace to school every day.”

MISSION Gina’s mission is to share her story and obstacles with the world. She is committed to coaching others going through similar experiences to help them persevere through them. Gina quotes, “Standing in your presence leads your passion into purpose.” She says that knowing yourself fully is the foundation for you to find what lights you up (your passion), and as you are trusting in your passion to lead you, your purpose (serving others) shows up.

“There was a lot of physical and emotional pain during the ages of 12-19. In my mind, my selftalk defeated me, ‘Gina you will never have what you want.’ “Gina, you will be in pain forever.” She thought pain was normal, she thought she would never be happy with the way she looked. Her thoughts were wrong! She was able to persevere through her faith and dance. She asked God to show her life’s plan and kept a positive attitude and outlook on life that to this day she holds onto. Dance was her saving grace and the only time Gina was able to take her back brace off and self-express her feelings, emotions, and freedom. This is was her medicine.

BECOMING PERFORMANCE COACH … Gina was a Radio City Rockette from 2008-2010 and many people looked at her including herself, as she was at the top of her game. In 2009, Gina was knocked out backstage and given an unconscious concussion and spinal injury. “I thought I was ok, until I was unable to text a sentence on the way to the ER.” Gina discovered through her recovery that there was more to life than a kick-line. “Learning is something I value in my life and I have always been on a journey of finding purpose in everything I do. I knew I had a bigger game to play in this lifetime. I knew I was here to inspire and educate others,” she said. “I knew I was here to turn my pain into purpose.” Gina took brain courses to recover and this led her path to finding a free intro to coaching class. She immediately got certified as a professional coach and then paralleled that with a certification in Simonson dance technique. This technique is used to help people understand their individual alignment in mind, body, and spirit. “Waking up each day living in my passion and purpose at the age of 36 is worth

Haydee Docasar MD is not your typical OB GYN practice. Her priority, explains Dr. Docasar, “is to provide personalized, knowledgeable health care services to women throughout every stage of their lives with compassion and respect for each individual throughout their changes”. In support of this mission, her practice offers all customary OB GYN services but also includes hormone balancing & therapy; bladder problems, ovarian cysts, infertility and other concerns as we reach every stage of our lives including medically supervised weight loss; cosmetic & antiaging treatments and IV Therapy because “customary” wasn’t meeting her patients’ needs. As a trained surgeon and medical doctor, Dr. Docasar has pursued another set of ailments attributed to aging that few doctors have specialty in treating in a non-surgical manner. Dr. Haydee Docasar is the first in Las Vegas to be trained in the advanced techniques of the THERmi “O” specific for bladder dysfunction and sexual enhancement and the only OB-GYN Surgeon performing the top non surgical treatment of 2016- THERMIva for vaginal rejuvenation. There are countless annoying female problems which result from aging, childbirth, and gravity including vaginal laxity, sagging labia, painful intercourse due to lack of vaginal moisture or lubrication, reduced nerve sensation resulting in less sexual satisfaction, urinary incontinence or the need to urinate frequently. While not life threatening, these can be life altering. Her search for effective, safe and non-surgical methods of treatment for these disorders brought Dr. Docasar to the ThermiVa®. ThermiVa produces results which are immediately apparent, with little risk, no pain, and no recovery downtime. The ThermiVa treatment is non-surgical and is performed in office. To help patients them look their best, Dr. Docasar has added ThermiSmooth®, a non-invasive treatment to smooth skin and reduce wrinkles and fine lines. M

YVEGAS Magazine is proud to bring you an all new special feature section, where each issue we ask readers to submit questions to our Top Lawyers for their opinions and input on topics you want answered.

Accident Q: I rear ended someone, and they sued my insurance company. My coverage was 100,000 but they are going for more. What exactly happens after that? Do they take my personal property? A: Before pursuing an “excess judgment” (a recovery in excess of an at-fault driver’s liability policy limit), personal injury attorneys will typically advise their clients to offer to settle

Steve Dimopoulos of Steve Dimopoulos Law

Child Support Q: My ex is over 20,000 dollars in arrears in child support payments, and claims he does not work to avoid his child support obligation. My child is 17 now, is there any advice on what steps to take?

Samira Knight of Tarkanian & Knight Law Group

A: Unfortunately, these questions cannot be simply answered without knowing all the facts. The first question would be whether you have opened a claim with the Child Support Division. If so, you would then go through them and they would continue to investigate. You can also provide them any additional information that you may obtain. Also, when you open a claim with the child support division they will have the ability to garnish from his bank account, refuse to let him get a passport, and even revoke in driver’s license. If you have not filed with the child support division, I recommend that you do. There are other approaches, but this would be the first step I would recommend.

* Please be advised that you should still seek legal advice to further elaborate, this is a general summary and proper legal advice cannot be given in such a forum.

their bodily injury claims for an amount equal to the at-fault drivers’ liability limit (there are a number of reasons for this which I will not address here). Thus, it is likely your insurance company has already declined an opportunity to settle the adverse driver’s claim for your $100,000 liability limit. Although you may be personally responsible for the amount by which a future verdict exceeds your insurance coverage, you might have a claim for “bad faith” against your insurance company in the event that were to happen. The theory of liability would be that your insurance company unreasonably declined an opportunity to settle your claim for your liability limit, thereby exposing you to an unnecessary excess judgment. Please feel free to contact my office for a consult to further discuss as the legal advice I can give here is limited based on the information, and every case is unique.

Child Support Q: My wife and I recently separated. We both make the same amount yearly, and split time evenly with the children. She now claims I need to start paying her child support. However we do not have a court decree in place. She says if she files for child support she will be awarded. Is this possible, and should I retain an attorney? A: If you both share joint physical custody, child support would be determined under a Nevada Supreme Court case called Wright v. Osburn, 114 Nev. 1367, 970 P.2d 1071 (1998), which states specifically when custody is shared equally, child support is determined as follows: “Calculate the appropriate percentage of gross income for each parent; subtract the difference between the two and require the parent with the higher income to pay the parent with the lower income that difference. .Id at 1368-1369.” In short, stating that child support will be paid based on the difference in income. If there is no difference in income, then there is no child support.

Harnessing the Power of Social Networks for Business By now you probably know that social media is not going away. You know you have to use it for your business and yet you are still confused about HOW to use it effectively. Social media marketing can be overwhelming and is ever evolving. I encourage my clients to start slow, take baby steps and progress as they get into a rhythm with a couple of initial platforms. Begin by focusing on those sites that cater to your primary customer. Think about age, sex and whether you are promoting a consumer or business to business product or service. Let’s look at the most relevant social media platforms today: • LinkedIn – this is your Business to Business platform. Its users are highly educated, professional and have a relatively high income. Professionals must have a complete optimized profile and there is a great chance you will get business if you use LinkedIn properly.

Facebook – this is your “home base” for almost everyone demographic. Approximately 50% of 65+ are using this platform and while teenagers have moved away from it, they tend to come back as they reach college age and beyond. Twitter – a great social platform for branding, exposure and connecting. Use hashtags (#) to search for conversations and join in conversations. Crosses a lot of demographics and is often where people get their news, weather, traffic, entertainment and sports updates. Instagram – this is now a very important photo and video platform. It is particularly key for the 35 and younger audience. Snapchat – this platform has matured and is a must if you are reaching a teenage audience. Pinterest - this is a billboard visual site

By Debbie Harris

that women are addicted to. Its audience is almost 80% women so if your product can be portrayed visually and appeals to women, don’t neglect this one. YouTube – video has continued to be essential in social media marketing and you should have a YouTube channel for your videos. Periscope and Facebook Live (YouTube Connect soon) – these are live streaming video apps and they are becoming extremely popular. We all seem to be fascinated by “in the moment” short videos. If you are reaching the teenage audience, Periscope is the one you want to be using.

Pick two of these and start there. Post 2-3 times per week and don’t stress, have fun. Next time we will explore WHAT to post. MV

Choosing a Vet By Stacy Rombach lvpetscene.com 702.367.4997 stacy@lvpetscene.com

Y

our veterinarian is one of your pet’s best friends. They need to be able to meet the needs of your pet and also be someone that you trust. You’ll also be dealing with staff and technicians. Selecting the “right” vet is extremely important. A good starting point is asking for recommendations from people who feel the same about pet care as you do. It could be a friend or neighbor, dog trainer, or groomer, etc. Create a list of veterinarians to consider. Next create a list of questions to ask. A few suggestions are:

Tayler & Maddy

Amanda & Bentley

Is it conveniently located? What are the regular office hours and do they fit with your schedule? Is parking available close by? What about fees – payment plans? How are emergency calls handled and what emergency services are available?

For more information: American Animal Hospital Association – www.aahanet.org MV Brought to you by Las Vegas Pet Scene Magazine www.LVPetScene.com

Fawnia & Leo

Jayde & Shadow

A visit is recommended to observe the following: Is the facility clean, well-organized, and does the equipment look up-to-date? Does the staff seem caring, courteous and competent? How do they interact with the pets and people in the waiting room? Your confidence in a vet is essential in helping your pet stay calm when they visit one of their best friends – the vet!

Dogs and Diet: Not Just About Physical Health By Cathy Brooks Chief Human Officer Hydrant Club 702.721.WOOF (9663) Cathy@HydrantClub.com

W

hen people think about their dog’s diet generally they’re considering physical health – nutrients, allergens, caring for fur/coat and the like. That is important. However, what a dog eats plays an equally prominent role in its behavior.

Kati, Crowley & Rufio

Trenton, Max Wellington & Gracie Wolfina

Markie & Kona

Steve & Scarlett Morea & Kyle

Think about it. When you eat something that doesn’t quite agree with you or that isn’t of good quality, you don’t feel well. The result of that may be that you don’t sleep properly and thus, are tired. As a result of being tired, you’re cranky and may have a hard time focusing. Bad food or just “off” ingredients can impact your gastrointestinal tract – and we all know how cruddy that makes one feel. Then there are those foods that just amp you up – sugar, fried food, and things stuffed with preservatives – making you jittery, anxious and a bit off center. Now imagine you’re a dog. You don’t control your food. You eat what you’re given. You have no way to communicate you don’t feel right. Instead, you act out – dismantling bathroom trashcans, shredding newspaper, marking in the house and being generally anxious or agitated.

Shelby & Wrigley

Murray, Chloe, Ella, Kahlua & Abby

Shawn & Josiah

Much like with humans, simply cleaning up your dog’s diet can go a long way towards giving them better physical health and giving you a clearer baseline of their actual behavior so you can address training more effectively. MV

here are many tips for summer beauty, summer fashion, summer fun, but I’m no expert on any of these topics. However, I wanted to share my top 10 picks that I focus on every day with my first cup of coffee. It sets the tone for my day and reminds me of what is most important – feeling good! 1.

Smile! Be happy – right here, right now. Having thoughts that feel good improve your overall well-being. 2. Thinking thoughts that make you feel good instead of thoughts that make you feel bad is a choice you make. It is that simple. 3. What you are feeling, thinking and talking about has everything to do with what is showing up in your life. 4. Why is having gratitude so good for us? Because it makes us feel good. 5. Focusing on what you want instead of feeling bad that you do not have it yet, opens doors to deliver what you are asking for. 6. Live in the present moment. When you are not thinking about the past or worrying about the future, you are safe, all is well. 7. Surrendering does not mean giving up, it just means letting go of fighting what is. 8. Resistance to change is the ego’s way of falsely trying to stay in control. There is no peace in this place. 9. Go with the flow – release resistance to what is, and feel the relief. 10. There is great love in this world. Choose to look for it. Choose to think about it. It is everywhere. MV

MY CAREER

Reviving your Love for your Position

M

any working professionals get to a point where they question their job statusand consider pursuing other opportunities. As the Student Affairs Program Manager for The International School of Hospitality, I am often asked by our students about the appropriate time to move on to a different position or career. Reasons for wanting a change can range from the usual stress related issues to simple boredom, even in good jobs. If you’re thinking about making a career change, but aren’t sure about your rationale, it may be worthwhile to consider rejuvenating your position—or even the way you think about it--rather than moving on. Consider the following: Are you bored with your job? Your day-to-day routines can be repetitive and even tiresome. Instead of waiting for your boss to give you an exciting project, or deciding that it’s time to seek life elsewhere, take the opportunity to make changes within the scope of your duties. Next time you arrive to work, vary your routine; work on projects and duties in different order, if possible, and focus on those things you enjoy. It will motivate you and get you out of that state of boredom. Am I envious of my colleague’s achievements? When friends move up the corporate ladder, they often provide an occasion for us to evaluate our own career progress. Sometimes this leads to a bit of jealousy, and even resentment, that can cause the best of us to start thinking about a change. However, it’s important to realize that remaining in the same position can also have significant benefits. There is the saying that “the grass is always greener on the other side.” Job seekers may not realize that with every new job comes with a set of new challenges and a different group of personalities to engage with… the comfort of growing in a familiar position within the same organization can be rewarding in and of itself.

56

I’m stuck at where I’m at and there is no growth. Have you exhausted all options and realized that you reach your maximum potential within your organization? Explore the possibilities within your current job and be open-minded to changes that may occur. A narrow view of the work that you do now will stop you from your developing and possibly prevent future opportunities for advancement. I fear that I may lose my job due to budget cuts. Prove that your job is valuable and is crucial to the success of your organization. If you truly feel that’s not the case, then demonstrateto the entire team that your skills and expertise can be applied inother positions with less tenuous value.

By Anthony Lai

I love my job, just not the people that work here. There will always be people you don’t like regardless of where you work. Not everyone has to get along, but don’t quit without trying to remedy the situation. Moving on to another company will also have its version of workplace drama. In closing, while quitting and moving on may seem easy, and perhaps exciting, remember that it is always hard to establish any work connection, or to develop an appreciation for a position, if you are hopping from job to job. In the end, you should always evaluate what you have first, and the potential consequences of moving on, before you make the decision to purse those greener pastures. MV

Kitchen Table Chef Antonio Nunez, and Chef Javier Chavez have brought a whole new meaning to serving up fantastic food at the “kitchen table.” Both Chefs attribute their strong feelings for the concept of Kitchen Table to their family upbringing. “The name was not an idea, but more of a feeling.” We want our table to be a place where you can start and finish your day. Meet new people in the neighborhood, socialize in person, get to know one another - something that seems quite rare these days. 1716 W Horizon Ridge Pkwy #100, Henderson, NV 89012 702.478.4782 kitchentablelv.com

Lucky Foo’s Lucky Foo’s opened its doors in the suburbs of Vegas to critical acclaim. It featured a unique cuisine fusing American style with heavy Asian influences. The menu was very large in scope ranging from dim sum to ramen, sushi, burgers, tacos, and more. Very ambitious to say the least. The venue was built out with care featuring dark wood walls adorned with Chinese influenced lattice work, cork covering gold foil wallpaper, large scale Kimmi Dolls that only we possess in all of Vegas, extensive art installations and much more making it a place that can be visited time and time again without getting bored. 8955 S Eastern Ave, Las Vegas, NV 89123 702.650.0669 luckyfoos.com

Restaurant Review Crew Pancho’s Authentic Mexican Cuisine

I

Pancho’s also has live entertainment throughout the week and on Fridays and Saturdays. The performances are enjoyed by local patrons with dancing later into the night. If you are hosting a special event, celebrating a special occasion, or looking for a more intimate experience, Pancho’s has private rooms and other restaurant space that can be reserved for anything from birthday parties, corporate events, to wedding dinner rehearsals, or wedding receptions. For these private parties, Pancho’s offers special menus and customized buffets.

The history of Pancho’s is as unique as the restaurant itself. It is one of the best known landmarks in Southern California. Mr. Richard Hunt Sampson and his family owned Pancho’s and the adjacent properties from 1945 until May of 1976, when they sold the properties to Ab Lawrence.

f you are looking for an experience and not just a place to eat, you have to check out Pancho’s in Summerlin! Owner Abbot Lawrence has created a restaurant to be proud of. This is the second Pancho’s location, as Abbot also has a Pancho’s in Manhattan Beach that is the oldest Mexican restaurant in the South Bay and has a loyal following of customers who have been dinging there for 30 plus years. The Manhattan Beach location has been voted “Best Mexican Restaurant” in the South Bay for 37 years! But the all new Pancho’s in Downtown Summerlin or DTS as most of us locals’ refer to it, definitely delivers. From the top notch quality of the food, the friendly staff, incredible ambiance, and delicious libations, Ab has created another slam dunk of an establishment that highlights so many cultural elements including historical antiquities, furniture, paintings, stained glass windows and Tiffany style hanging chandeliers. The plant life and floral décor create the feeling as if you are in a beautiful, authentic and rustic Mexican Hacienda.

By Candice Shaffer

The Pancho’s Owner has always been a sports fan and was even a football player at Princeton. His passion for sports transformed to his business ownership of Sports Sales Specialists and holding the exclusive rights to the L.A. Kings and Lakers for a period of time. The expansive and authentic Mexican menu coupled with delicious hand-made margaritas is one of the many reasons this Mexican Restaurant is quickly becoming a Vegas staple, and locals’ new favorite. MY RESTAURANTS

Sake Rok

W

ith a name like Sake Rok, we were not sure what to expect. One of us is not a fan of sushi or sake and one us grew up in Los Angeles and had the opportunity to regularly eat at Matushisa and Nobu’s first restaurant, before his days as a celebrity chef. With all of the buzz about this new restaurant we both couldn’t wait to try it out. Located in the Park, adjacent to the T-Mobile arena, Sake Rok is one of the few new restaurant offerings in the area. Prior to entering, a walk up bar located outside the restaurant caught our eye. Barstools were available during the day but in the evening, they were moved inside. We noticed a lot of people enjoying the perfect spring weather. Overlooking the bar is a 16x9 projection glass. Sake Rok is the first in Las Vegas to have anything of its kind. Standard images scroll through but we were advised that custom images can be displayed on the glass as well. It’s incredible! Walking in, we first focused on the restaurant décor - it’s amazing! Sensory overload, in fact. Rock and Roll Geishas inspired by the underground graffiti scene adorn the walls. There are two dining areas. The first floor encompassed a large seating area anchored by the sushi bar on one side and beverage bar on the other. The mezzanine overlooks the main dining room and has the best view of Park and the restaurants state-of-the-art video system with the sushi station directly below. We came in for an early dinner but after 6:00 p.m., the restaurant transforms into “dinner… and a show”. The MCs schmooze with diners and coordinate restaurant wide sake bombs. Our server was actually part of the show! There are sporadic vignettes and service staff breaks into lip sync serenades and small theatrical vignettes. However, service doesn’t skip a beat because other servers step in to assist and make sure everyone’s needs are attended to. Our server promptly brought out menus, they were 2x3 feet… no reading glasses were needed.

THAT’S WHAT SHE SAID By Michele Polci, CPCE, CMP and Shauna B. Lederman, CPCE, CHE

We were in a green mood and had to try a number of the vegetable dishes. They pretty much sold the show for one of us. Edamame Rok is out of this world with a little Asian Garlic Butter and chili thread on top, this was hands-down the best edamame! The grilled Shishito peppers were also perfectly executed, with the skin of the peppers expertly charred and topped with crispy garlic, sea salt and lime and served with a charred lime. We also ordered the Brussels Sprouts with Bacon Streusel. We both love Brussels and these did not disappoint. They were crispy and the Asian Pears and honey fish sauce that the Brussels are tossed in was quite the complement to the subtle saltiness of the bacon. They go in one of our books as one of the best things we have ever eaten. In addition to the starters, small plates, rolls, and sushi there was a solid offering of entrees ranging from Miso Marinated Black Cod to a 42 oz. Wagyu Tomahawk Steak. We knew we ordered a lot of food and shared a Hanger Steak entree. It was the perfect accompaniment to the other items we had enjoyed. It was presented with lovely Chanterelle Mushrooms and AKA Miso. How about the sushi? The table next to us ordered the Godzilla Platter. It paraded past us with a 2’ tall Godzilla blowing “smoke” out of his mouth and was complimented by five different specialty rolls and eight pieces of Sashimi and Nigiri served on a huge red platter. Before we left we went to check out a third floor private event space, aptly named Sakura Terrace, paying homage to the Japanese Cherry Blossom. Like its name, the third floor is sophisticated and the décor is contemporary. Featuring floor to ceiling glass, the space is something quite unique to Las Vegas. The glass opens up completely to the Terrace and you have a complete indoor/outdoor venue. On our next visit you can expect one of us will be having her share of sake bombs… and that’s what she said. Chef’s Corner: Paymon’s Mediterranean Café

Chef Paymon Raouf Paymon Raouf Paymon Raouf of the famed Paymon’s Mediterranean Café has always had a love for mixing herbs and spices to get the perfect synergy of flavors. His Moussaka recipe is a perfect example of his affection for his favorite part of the body-the taste bud. He also sells his spice blends at LVSPICE.com. MV

®

FREE RECIPE! Moussaka (mu-sa-ka) Moussaka is commonly referred to as a Greek Lasagna. First, prepare Béchamel Sauce then prepare the rest of the recipe. Ingredients for Béchamel Sauce 4 oz. Unsalted Butter 8 oz. All-Purpose Flour 1/4 Teaspoon Ground Nutmeg 1/2 Sea Salt 1/2 qt. Chicken Stock 1 qt. Whole Milk 3 Large Eggs Place milk, chicken stock and all spices in a pot on the stove and cook on medium-high heat until hot then turn down to medium heat to keep hot. In a small pot, melt butter on medium heat then stir in flour while cooking the roux until golden brown. Add hot milk, chicken stock mixture to the roux; stir completely until roux is completely dissolved. Cook for 10 min. Stir constantly (it burns very easily). Whip in the eggs until completely mixed then remove from the stove.

66

Ingredients for Meat Mix 85/15 Ground beef -3 lb. Potatoes, skinned, 6 medium size Eggplant, skinned, 5 medium size Tomatoes, fresh, finely diced -1 lb. Red Onion (Finely diced) -1lb. Parsley, chopped -2.5 oz. Garlic, chopped -1oz. Mint, fresh, chopped -1 oz. Dill Weed -1/2 tablespoon Cloves, ground, 1/2 teaspoon Cinnamon, ground, 1.25 teaspoon Sea Salt, 1.5 teaspoon Olive Oil -2 oz. Chicken Stock -10 oz. Tomato Paste -6 oz. Parmesan cheese, grated, 1/2 lb. Béchamel Sauce -2 qts.

Prepare Meat Mix In large pot, sauté onions and garlic in olive oil on medium-high heat until onions soften, add ground beef and continue to sauté until beef begins to turn lightly brown. Be careful not to overcook the beef! Add seasonings, herbs and tomato paste and continue to sauté for 2-3 minutes until completely blended. Add diced tomatoes and chicken stock and let it cook for 45 min. on low heat. Divide into 2 equal portions.

Slice skinless potatoes to 1/4 inch thick and slice skinless eggplants to 1/3 thickness. Coat sliced eggplant & sliced potatoes with olive oil, place on sheet pan and put in the oven until soft. For the first layer, in a large baking pan place one layer of eggplant, add one layer of half of the Meat Mix, one layer of one-third of the béchamel sauce and sprinkle with cheese. Use a soft rubber spatula to smooth the layers. For the second tier add one layer of potatoes, one layer of the remaining Meat Mix, one layer of one third of the béchamel and sprinkle with cheese. Add a layer of eggplant, top off with remaining béchamel sauce and sprinkle with cheese. Place in oven and bake for 60 min at 350 degrees, then place under broiler on low heat until the béchamel sauce is a light golden color. Take out of oven and let cool for 15 minutes. Cut into 12 triangular or square portions.

By: Shawn Tempesta Co-Host, “The Morning Blend” KTNV-TV Las Vegas www.thedish.tv T-Mobile Arena & The Park Between Monte Carlo & New York New York on The Strip hen you live in a city that offers so much, it is rare to “wow” people. Yet somehow, with the latest developments near The Strip and Tropicana, this city has once again found a way to surprise. T-Mobile Arena and The Park offer so much – it earned its own article! The mainstays to either side of The Park offer a fantastic gateway – Tom’s Urban, Diablo’s Cantina, SNF Shake Shack. However, there is more to explore once you walk amongst the trees.

W

Beerhaus offers an awesome bar environment with screens all around, a huge selection of beers (hence the name) and an excellent menu featuring hormone-free meat and locally sourced produce – a little more highbrow than your normal bar fare. Bruxie offers sandwiches on waffles. It may sound weird and trendy – and it is – but it is delicious and at a great price point for the strip. Bruxie makes Chicken & Waffles incredibly portable. Sake Rok is tucked further within The Park, with an entertaining staff and spontaneous Sake bombs, it goes hand and hand with their incredible sushi – it’s earned them rave reviews in such a short time being open. The biggest surprise at The Park may be California Pizza Kitchen! They’ve stepped it up several notches with this location – with many online 4-star reviews, claiming it is unlike any other CPK experience they’ve had. The ambiance alone will have you saying the same thing. Once inside T-Mobile Arena, betwixt the normal concessions fare, you’ll find incredible dining options! There’s a Shake Shack (yes, feet from the New York New York location) as well as Pizza Forte (from the kitchen that brought you the well-loved Ferraro’s). The only knock on the property is they hide these deep within the concourse, so do a loop around the building for the best bites. All and all, we are far too spoiled in Sin City – and that is fine by me. MV

Keeping Our Children Safe:

Bishop Gorman High School Implements Cutting-Edge Visitor Management Technology

H

aving a teenage daughter that attends Bishop Gorman High School, periodically I receive email alerts from the Assistant Principal. Juggling a busy career, I always do my best to stay on top of these email notifications by skimming through the information that is sent. A few months ago I received one email alert in particular that I read and re-read to ensure I understood thoroughly just what the email was stating. To my pleasant surprise, this was one of the best email notifications I have received this year. It was something that is of the utmost importance and tugged on my personal heartstrings. Living in this uncertain day and age that we do, it’s imperative as parents that we do our best to protect our children from the craziness of lurking predators both registered, and non-registered, that reside alongside us in the community in which we love.

of our children on the forefront of important matters. Voted one of the top 100 products of 2014 by District Administration Magazine, we are proud to welcome Raptor to Las Vegas schools and looking forward to more facilities implementing this incredible technology. We applaud Bishop

I found it seemingly difficult to believe that this program was founded in 2003, as until it was brought to my attention that it was being implemented at Bishop Gorman, I had no idea this type of technology even existed on the market. The Raptor System leads the nation with more than 15,000 community facilities and schools (K-12) currently using the system, including the YMCA. This is most definitely a key component and Bishop Gorman has once again set the bar when it comes to keeping safety

Bishop Gorman High School has implemented one of the most cutting-edge visitor management technologies on the market, the Raptor System. This new technology is dedicated to school safety and protecting our children. The Raptor System is responsible for identifying more than 15,000 registered sex offenders attempting to enter their clients’ campuses within the past decade. Credited with the arrests of many wanted offenders attempting to cross state lines, it plays a vital role in depicting sex offenders who have failed to register as offenders when they relocate to another state. The program performs an instant sex offender background check against the national registered sex offender database for every single visitor upon each visit to their clients’ respective campuses.

Heart Chef 2016, Vic Vegas, (local Executive Chef featured on Bar Rescue) recounts his personal story relating to childhood obesity; “My 22 year old son struggled with his weight in high school. He’s proof that making better choices with diet and becoming more active works.” Despite the alarming statistics we face here in the Silver State, Flavors of the Heart is committed to encouraging better health within local communities.

Flavors of the Heart is designed to teach teens that flavor, presentation and texture does not have to be compromised to achieve heart healthy dishes. By Lori Nelson Station Casinos

H

appy Birthday to us! July 1st marks our 40th birthday and we’re throwing a huge month-long bash to celebrate, so please RSVP “YES” to be part of the fun. Our humble beginnings started with a 5,000 square-foot casino simply named “The Casino” (today Palace Station) that opened off Sahara Ave. with 100 slot machines and a snack bar exclusively designed for the locals. Our founder, Frank Fertitta Jr., began his gaming career as a bellman at the Tropicana. He had a novel idea that locals wanted an entertainment and gaming experience… just not surrounded by tourists. His idea was simple: provide locals with great entertainment, customer service and value for their dollar. It was an absolute hit with the locals, especially the hospitality workers who enjoyed having a place to relax after their shift. This solidified the Fertitta Family as one of the early pioneers in locals gaming. As the town grew, so did Station Casinos. From 1976-1993, Palace Station grew and expanded with more amenities. Mr. Fertitta brought his two sons, Frank III and Lorenzo into the business working a variety of jobs to learn the gaming business inside and out. In the early 90’s, they recognized the town was growing and had a vision for replicating Palace Station in new communities that were being developed. An incredible expansion began with the arrival of Boulder Station in 1994, Texas Station in 1995 and Sunset Station in 1997. Each casino was better than the last with the addition of more restaurants, entertainment such as bowling alleys, movie theatres and concert venues and expanded gaming offerings all while staying true to offering locals a terrific value for their dollar. Today, Station Casinos offers 19 entertainment destinations and has proudly grown from 90 to 12,000 employees. We hope you will join us throughout July to celebrate our big birthday. We’ll kick it off with a bang by hosting a fireworks extravaganza on Friday, July 1 where it all began. MV

Local Spotlight: Meet Carissa Rainwater

C

arissa Rainwater started dancing at the Summerlin Dance Academy 2002 when it had just opened their doors. And like the Dance Academy, Carissa has blossomed successfully and with the community. Her passion grew from her young age and now dancing is not just something she does it’s her life.

It’s a gift that she accomplishes this when Carissa typical dance week is working six days, nine hours a day committed to her passion. All this while being a student. She says have a great support from family is a huge catalyst to her success and motivation. Both her mother Lisa and 9-year-old brother encourage Carissa every day to do her best.

In 2010, she entered the world of competitive dancing. A master at all types of dance including modern dance and ballet, her favorite is contemporary dance. With long hours dedicated to perfecting her craft she has built a family with teachers and choreographers. Notable teachers in the dance industry like, Kylie Bronk with the Innovation Dance Company. Bronk was on the TV show “So You Think You Can Dance?”

She attends Spring Valley High School and is the co-facilitator for her school company. Carissa has been with Innovation Dance since 2008 competing as an elite dancer and has won a National Title at the Start Power Competition 2015. Other accolades include an award from Julliard for the best technique in footwork and the best feet in the world. That award earned her a scholarship for the summer at the esteemed school. Recently, Carissa was award by UNLV as a prestigious dancer in Nevada.

This is not Carissa’s only philanthropic endeavor. She is actively involved in the community through other organizations like Opportunity Village. There she teaches youth dance. And attends the breast cancer awareness walk every year.

At such a young age, she is mature beyond her years. One of the adages she lives by is a reflection of how developed her mindset is. “As a dancer instead of worrying about everything else, just focus on yourself because if you don’t than you can’t grow.” She wants to make sure she teaches this to others. MV

Carissa’s aspires to be a dance teacher one day and bring all the positivity to children that dance has infused into her life.

Life is Beautiful Festival

T

he appropriately named and highly anticipated festival that is held annually right in the heart of downtown Las Vegas is already creating buzz with the release of its musical artist line-up. The event in its fourth year is slated for three days this year, September 23rd-25th. The music, culinary, art and learning extravaganza has been featuring leaders in each industry since its first festival in 2014. For the culinary events, LIB incorporates interactive cooking showcases, demonstrations and food stands while featuring celebrity chefs from The Food Network, Bravo, TLC and more. The festival also has speakers in tech and inspiration to

educate and enlighten. Speakers like Bill Nye the Science Guy, who’s iconic American live action science program that originally aired in 1993 and ran from 1998. Other speakers were Rosario Dawson and founders of amazing non-profit organizations and foundations. The festival’s inspiration Lizzie Velaquez was a speaker. She is a national anti-bullying activist. Tony Hsieh has also taken the LIB stage. With the education from the speakers, the hundreds of food options and a focus on musical performances that bring big name artists to the city, it’s no wonder that organizers are expecting more than 100,000 attendees this year. The 2016 edition marks the second year under the co-ownership of Wendoh Media. The shift last year coincided with the festival’s move from October to September. Headliners for this year’s festival are Mumford and Sons, J.Cole, Major Lazer, The Lumineers, Young the Giant and Jane’s Addiction just to name a few. Tickets are currently on sale with a three-day general admission pass starting at $225 while a VIP pass will sell for at least $575.

Tickets are on sale at lifeisbeautiful.com. Life is Beautiful says: “Experience the stages, dance to the music, hear stories, try the food, hug a new friend, explore the art and meet people who will change your life. These are the best days of our lives.” If you have ever been to the Life Is Beautiful Festival, you will know that this rings true. The energy and vivacity of the crowd is like no other music festival. The streets are filled with familiar local faces and the energy is eclectic. We asked a true Las Vegas local in attendance at the last LIB Festival to describe their experience and they stated “this event truly brought out the best vibes of a diversified community and was definitely a one-of-a-kind experience. We will certainly go again each year and embrace the togetherness the event provides as well as the various musical talents that LIB brings to the table”. MV

Invest in Sports Betting By: Richard Pawlasek

W

hether you are new to Las Vegas or a lifelong resident, we all love to bet on sports to give the game a little more meaning. However, betting on sports should be looked at from an investment perspective and not as gambling. Betting and investing have many parallels that can help you win money in the long run! When you invest in stocks or bonds, you let your money grow over time. One bad day for a stock does not force you to get a second job to invest even more. One great day does not allow you to cash out and retire. The same goes with betting on sports. Common mistakes from bettors are to bet big after a win and bet even bigger after a loss. The cardinal sins for bettors are chasing, doubling down after a win, and placing parlay bets. If you invest your money with a financial advisor, you should see a profit. If you can go the whole year and make money while betting on games, that is fun and rewarding! Looking at betting as a long-term gain will help you make money and enjoy the games even more.

Las Vegas casinos stay in business because people lose money. However, with sports betting there are plenty of ways to make money! The key is to know how much you can afford to wager and use that as your “sports betting investment. If that is $100/month or $10,000/month, it should be used like you are investing this money instead of using it to gamble. One of the main things average bettors struggle with is maximizing their wins and limiting their losses. Patience is key when it comes to the betting window. At SportsAdvising.com, we provide winning picks, money management advice and a proven track record of beating the books! Invest with the SA team and we will show you a better way to bet on sports and make money doing so! MV Contact Richard directly for FREE PICKS! range of musical entertainment – from local talent to international sensations – for limited engagements. The venue showcases leaders in jazz and blues, as well as musicians of other genres, including top artists from across the state. Kenny G, Earl Klugh, Chaka Kahn, Christopher Cross and Jake Shimabukuro have each played to a packed house that manages to feel spacious and intimate at the same time. Multi-level individual tables, comfortable booths and an inviting bar area offer seating choices, each with excellent views of the stage. The completely renovated, 9,000 square-foot venue underwent an extensive, multi-million dollar revitalization, creating the first entirely new music venue in Waikiki. From the day the doors opened in early 2016, Blue Note Hawaii has become the hottest club in Honolulu. The former home of the SOS, Society of Seven, the venue has been well known for many years by Hawaiian music lovers and frequent visitors. Barbara Campbell, Outrigger’s vice president of retail leasing and property management for Outrigger Enterprises Group, says “the new club, Blue Note, changes the music landscape in Waikiki. without any discomfort to the ears. One guest commented, “At Blue Note you don’t listen to the music, you are actually ‘in’ the music.” Hawaii’s Grammy and Na Hoku Hanohano award winning musicians are effervescent in their comments about the new venue. Singers Henry Kapono on guitar, Robert Cazimero on piano, and Willie K, bassist John Kolivas, and songstress Melveen Leed say the club offers the opportunity to “show our chops” in the jazz format. Priced in three levels, fans can enjoy dinner and the show or omit the dinner that is packaged and served with enough time to savor the menu before the music begins. Crab Cake Sliders and Caprese Salad can be followed by French Onion Soup under a thick layer of cheese. Top pick for entrees may well be the Braised Harris Ranch Beef Short Ribs. Desserts unique to Hawaii, Banana Lumpia and Alii Poi Batter Andagi with Coconut Haupia Custard and Kona Chocolate Sauce. If those ingredients aren’t familiar, ask the server and they will explain. The drink menu offers fine wines by the bottle or glass, award winning scotch and both Junmai and Junmai Gingo sake. The selection of after dinner drinks rivals a jazz club menu from the speakeasy days, perpetuated by late-night, black and white films.

Summer is all about Summer Love!

S

By Tami Finseth

parks, Chemistry & Love at First Sight: Summer Luvin’

Love: everybody wants it, yet why does it seem to elude so many of us? Should love be considered the eighth Wonder of the World? Is it really up there with The Great Pyramid of Giza or the Hanging Gardens of Babylon? Or is it that we as people have been brainwashed by all the romantic movies, the Disney princesses, and the visions of Cupid’s bow hitting our hearts when our eyes lock with our beloveds? Have all of these perfect fantasies of love closed off our minds and in turn our hearts to the potential of love that is sitting right in front of us? I believe love, attraction, chemistry... all of that is something that builds over time. In our early 20’s attraction is the ultimate captivator, it’s what draws us together romantically, so go after it! Experience what love throws your way! But, as we get older, learn more about life and the challenges that come with it, our list of what is important in a partner changes. Don’t get me wrong, we all want to meet our soul mate, but the package that person arrives in is wrapped differently as time goes on. At some point we realize that looks grow with a great personality, that we’ll gladly accept a half an inch shorter vs. lack of integrity, and that being able to engage in an intelligent conversation versus being knocked off our feet upon “first sight” trumps everything. Isn’t our vision of a true soul mate somebody who loves us unconditionally at our best, yet, still sees the best in us at our worst? Don’t we all want that somebody who makes us laugh just a little too hard, who makes us smile just at the sound of their text ‘pinging’ our phone? Isn’t our soul mate the person we can’t live without, and not just the one we can see ourselves living with? I think your true love, your soul mate, your happily ever after, is that person you see yourself sitting next to in a rocking chair on your front porch when you’re 90 years old looking at each other with a little twinkle in your eyes as you reminisce about life saying, “Oh yes, darling, I remember when.”

looking for Cupid to show up or fireworks to burst into color above their head, because in doing so, you may be letting your soul mate walk away as well as setting yourself up for constant disappointment. Relax, enjoy, exhale and if you find yourself laughing, enjoying conversation and not realizing that two hours have passed by, along with a great meal, go ahead and see that person again. Attraction grows, chemistry builds and desire is best slowly stirred. A relationship doesn’t happen overnight. Remember, if it starts with fireworks where does it have to go? Get to know someone, learn about them and give love a chance. Summer is a great time to expose you to new situations, new people and have fun. True love is found in the small steps, and it’s not as elusive as you may think. So, come on, get out there this summer! You won’t be sorry. MV ~Tami Like me on Facebook at Tami Finseth Email me at: Tamifinseth@gmail.com

See, summer love isn’t about your “happily ever afters.” They’re about getting to know someone, enjoying a meal, a laugh, and making a human connection. Stop sabotaging and

However, although there might be some challenges unique to living in Las Vegas, it is definitely possible to begin and maintain an enduring relationship in this town. The key to any relationship is trust, and you have to especially be trusting living in a place where sex sells. It’s not unusual for the locals to hit up the local gentlemen’s bars or hotel pool parties, where everyone is scantily clad and alcohol is freely flowing. Bars and nightclubs are open until the sun comes up, so there’s definitely more potential to get into trouble, if you’re the party type. It’s definitely important to be respectful or your partner on your boys’ or girls’ nights on The Strip, and it’s equally as important to give your partner his or her space to have fun with friends. One of the wonderful things about Las Vegas is that it happens to be a city with a great deal of job opportunities for young women. Your girlfriend might be paid to be a high roller’s arm

candy while he’s playing blackjack or to simply to sit and look beautiful at someone’s table at a nightclub. This might be hard for any boyfriend or husband to accept, but in Vegas, you can’t be jealous. You have to let your girl make her money. Many women in this city are promo models who get hit on literally hundreds of times a day. And it’s not only the women who are objectified here. Men are expected to be eye candy as well—there are countless male models, dancers and shirtless bartenders around town. That being said, it’s not only the models who work odd jobs; many Vegas locals work in the casinos, which often require employees to work the graveyard shift. Your significant other could be a lounge singer, a bottle-service girl, a card dealer, or even a cast member of a Vegas show. What happens if you work a 9-to-5? Obviously it’s better if both partners are on the same schedule, but if that’s not possible, it is crucial set aside some quality time for each other. Arranging a date night once a week is equally as vital as getting your hustle on, if you want your relationship to last. There definitely are some advantages to settling

down in Las Vegas. There is always so much to see and do in this city that you will never run out of date ideas. Vegas is a city of luxury and extravagance, so you can really go above and beyond when courting your significant other. And if you’re more of a hole-in-the-wall, down to Earth type, there are plenty of places for you off The Strip. Additionally, the cost of real estate is much cheaper in Vegas than in most other major cities. So, you and your loved ones can live in a much more spacious and beautiful home than you could, in say, Los Angeles. Las Vegas is a very special place, and it might not seem like a place for sustaining true love, but not only can you create an exciting relationship here, you can create a lasting one. It’s imperative to keep a sense of normalcy in this crazy town. And above all, love each other, support each other, and have each other’s back like no other. The truth of the matter is, love is a gamble anywhere, not just Las Vegas. MV Amy is a life and relationship coach. For more information please visit www.lovesexandmiracles.

“Who Knew” with Ishe Smith AKA Sugar Shay 1.

First thing I do in the morning is…. The first thing I like to do in the morning is to thank God for waking up to see another day, I also like to sip on some green tea and watch First Take on ESPN.

2.

One thing I like to do after work is... One thing I love to do after a hard day of work is lounge back, watching movies with my children; I love to eat at my favorite restaurants, and heading down to Town Square to catch a movie at AMC.

3.

One of my favorite Las Vegas restaurants is…. Well I actually have two spots here in town I love to visit, I love Babystacks, they have about 5 locations throughout town, best known for their Red Velvet Pancakes, and they also have a killer lunch menu as well. I also love to dine at Marrakech, very lovely environment; they have some of the best Mediterranean food I have ever tasted.

4.

One of my favorite Las Vegas shows is…

7.

When I leave Las Vegas, I would love to retire in the country, somewhere secluded, not another house for miles, some where I could fish all day and just enjoy the outdoors, a place that is really green.

The Michael Jackson Cirque Du Soleil is the best show on the strip, I absolutely love it.

5.

I wish I knew how to…. I wish I knew how to sing, I think that is one of the greatest gifts God gives to humans.

6.

96

8.

9.

10.

On my day off I like to…. My day off consists of me getting a massage, watching movies, or going hiking.

One thing I wish I were better at…. I wish I was better at playing golf; I would love to have a handicap in the low 80’s.

11.

One thing I can’t live without is… One thing I can’t leave without is WiFi, it seems to control everything now a days, it’s impossible to conduct business without it.

I wish I could quit... I wish I could quit being so addicted to taking care of my teeth, good teeth and breath is a major concern that I’m always worried about.

A person who inspires me the most is… A person who inspires me the most is Floyd Mayweather, his work ethic, the way he treats people, his humbleness, he inspires me to be the best I can be in my profession.

When I leave Las Vegas I like to go to…

12.

My one strange habit is… I wear my socks inside out, it really feels better on my feet, I hate the way socks feel when worn the proper way, and I feel socks are poorly made.
