#
METOO is an all too serious movement currently making headlines to avoid making mention of. Many strong and powerful women have been subjugated to inequality or a misogynistic leader and/or boss, or significant other at one point in time in their life. It’s often times been said that “it’s not about what happens to you, but it is about how you react to the situation that matters”. This movement spread virally in October of 2017 on an international level. As some say, where there’s one cockroach found crawling, there’s more than likely a ton of others behind that one. This is true for women across the country who have had enough, living in a time where we have continually accepted negative behavior by allowing it and not coming together to support one another and take a stand for what is right. This issue is dedicated to female survivors. Women who have survived any significant amount of abuse typically go one of two ways. They traditionally either take a stance of: whatever doesn’t kill me, makes me stronger, or they revert into a victim mentality blaming what’s happened to them for their circumstances. The ladies reflected in the pages of the 2018 Top 100 Women of the Year truly are the epitome of success and survival skills are a foundational and fundamental concept of their levels of achievement. The goal of the Top 100 Women issue is always to inspire support among other likeminded and successful women. Although, we wish we could include many more of the phenomenal nominees, this year’s Top 100 list is spot on! And we hope you enjoy learning about local entrepreneurial female leaders as much as we have. The entire #METOO campaign aligns one common vision: “empowerment through empathy,” indicating that survivors of abuse are not alone when they go through challenging times and if we can share that same message of strength, courage and empathy in our own local community, we can all help heal and shape our city and support those who have tremendous potential to help make Las Vegas increasingly the best city to live in. Both women and men alike. Although the current movement and initiative is indicative of women who have endured abuse, men are not exempt from suffering and enduring hardships, at least in my opinion. Not from a feminist standpoint, but from a humanitarian standpoint, feminism never did much for me,

except for ensure that when raising my daughters as a single mother, I surely got to bring home the bacon, cook it up in the frying pan, and a special thank you to feminism; I was now able to clean up after it was served as well, then wake up and do it all over again. Not to say that I disagree with positive societal changes for women’s rights, but having strong, supportive male roles that back the positive changes is key.

This November Vote YES on Question 1 Marsy’s Law for the Victim’s of Crime By Dawn Gibbons
N
ational Crime Victims’ Week is coming up soon the week of April 8th through the 14th. Victims of crime have little or no rights. Nevada has the opportunity to change that wrong to a right this year. Nevada voters will head to the polls this fall to vote for their choice of candidates in this election cycle. In addition to candidates, voters will also have the power to vote for THEMSELVES. The Nevada Secretary of State’s office has assigned Question 1 to Marsy’s Law for Nevada on the November ballot. This proposed constitutional amendment would guarantee enforceable rights for victims of crime. Working to spread the word about this impactful measure is Lynda Tache. Lynda is the Political Director for the Marsy’s Law for Nevada campaign and spends her time reaching out to lawmakers, advocacy groups, victims and citizens to answer questions about the measure and secure their support.
Lynda knew there was more to be done in Nevada. Now, Tache is focused on serving victims of crime by advocating for Question 1 Marsy’s Law for Nevada. Certain rights protected under Question 1 would ensure victims or surviving relatives to have a guaranteed voice, consideration, and information that every victim deserves to have when undergoing the judicial process and having to face their perpetrator. The accused should have important, protected rights. Marsy’s Law which is Question 1 on this November’s ballot levels the playing field by providing specific guarantees to the victims, enforceable by law, including certain rights such as the following specific rights • The right to receive information about the services available to crime victims • Right to be treated with fairness and respect throughout the criminal justice process • Right to be protected from the defendant • Right to notice of all public proceedings in the case

This national effort is named after Marsalee “Marsy” Nicholas who was murdered by her ex-boyfriend in California in 1983. A week later he was released pending his court proceedings and confronted the victim’s family, who had no idea he was out of jail. Today her brother, Dr. Henry T. Nicholas, is working to secure a voice of protection for victims and their families, in every state. Marsy’s Law has already passed in California, Illinois, North Dakota, South Dakota and Ohio. This year, we are hopeful Nevadans will pass this initiative with their support and their vote. Lynda Tache and a growing list of victims, advocacy groups, legal experts, law enforcement, as well as politicians, and city, county and state leaders are uniting on behalf of victims of crime. Lynda’s passion for doing what is right for the good of others shines through again - especially for those victims that have suffered further abuse by the criminals that victimized them. Now is the time to weed away pimples and dark spots, stimulate smooth skin, and reap the rewards of a clarifying skin routine. Follow these tips to ensure your spring selfies don’t require a filter. 1.
Weed: Weed out clogged pores, shed dead skin, and prevent stubborn black and white-heads with the magic of Retinol. This ingredient can be found OTC but lower in concentration than the powerhouse RX Retinoids. Nonetheless, a good brand will label a percentage with the form of retinol

e are taught growing up that we have five senses: taste, sight, smell, touch and hearing. It was originally believed that we could identify around 10,000 different smells with our nose. However, today scientists believe that we have the capability of smelling, although possibly not identifying, approximately a trillion! Of the five basic senses smell is the most powerful. Think about it. How many times has a particular aroma transformed you back to a memory? For instance, the power of aroma plays a very important role in wine tasting. Wine sensory kits are a fun way to test your sense of smell and aromas can range from “new mown hay” to “violets”. My husband often comments when first smelling a particular wine that it reminds him of the violets his grandmother use to grow on her window sill. Your sense of smell plays an important role in food as well. For chefs, creating an appealing aroma for what they are preparing is a key factor on how well the food will taste. Generally speaking if it smells good you are already committed to it tasting good.

That’s why I always recommend visiting a store that will let you take home a sample to try in your environment. Trying them in the store can be fun but after smelling a couple of those fragrance strips your nose is overwhelmed and confused. Whether we realize it or not the power of scent does influence everything we purchase and consume from household to beauty products. MYVEGAS Magazine polled over 100,000 of our readers to find the 2018 Top 100 Women in Las Vegas. These women come highly recommended by our readers and our community! There’s no shortage of fabulous females in the Las Vegas Valley, so ranking among the Top 100 Women of the Year is an extraordinary honor and a sought-after accolade. These women truly give their all - sacrificing time, energy and resources - to positively impact our community each and every day. Here at MYVEGAS, we are blessed with the privilege of providing our readers with fun and inspiring content, and the ability to recognize some stand-out women in this special feature issue. The leading ladies honored in this Top 100 Women of the Year issue make up a mere fraction of the incredible women in our city and, although we wish we could honor all of them, there are exponentially more than we had room to print. With that said, we are privileged to be able to credit these 100, very deserving, women.
Look inside some of the best companies in the world and you’ll find a single individual whose energetic personality emanates outward to the rest of the team. GreenONE Holdings is no exception. The Las Vegas based company that makes idrink beverages, has a “David slays Goliath” attitude spawned from years of scrapping with store owners to gain shelf space in an industry dominated by Coke, Pepsi and Dr. Pepper. This determined attitude from a next generation beverage company competing in a “pay to play” industry, stems from the passionate mentality of its leader, Mariah Fineman. Having come from the bomb shelters of Lebanon to Las Vegas at age 6, Mariah learned English as her third language from a “speak and spell” toy, while helping her mother care for her 3 brothers. From an early age, Mariah learned a work ethic born out of necessity and a sense of giving back, through the appreciation of her new life. That background was the perfect platform for her current day pairing with idrink. When GreenONE Holdings attained the rights to a totally new technology that would enable nutrients and minerals to quickly absorb inside the human body without any taste; the company realized it had a dilemma. How do you explain to a jaded consumer, that sugar was no longer needed to effectively deliver nutrients into a beverage? This predicament dictated the hiring of someone that was not only smart enough to understand this delivery system, but was also able to humanize it, and convince a skeptical marketplace to embrace its benefits. No small task in a field full of beverages that only insinuated health; with their messages meant to mislead an unsuspecting consumer.

Mariah used this momentum behind the brand to then convince Ken Wrathall and the team at Nevada Beverage, (the local Budweiser distributor) to take idrink to the rest of the Las Vegas community. Now, as the company’s full time President, Mariah has rewarded local investors by expanding idrink’s footprint to John Lenore & Co. in San Diego and Haralambos Beverage Company in LA, The OC and 5 other counties. Both of these elite distributors were inspired by Mariah’s passion for the brand and the product’s unique ability to hydrate consumers. Their motivated staffs were inspired to triple idrink’s store count over the last 6 months. All this while Mariah has focused on the family culture of the company and duplicating her mentality of compassion and hard work. When there were hurricanes last year in both Texas and Florida, idrink’s team sent care packages of pallets to the families in need and said it was from Las Vegas “with love”. When the attacks on our own city occurred, they stopped everything for three days and company trucks delivered both food and idrink to the workers and rescue units. They also rushed to the blood banks and helped pass out food that they had purchased with their own money. They instinctively knew the right things to do.
An intelligent steward with a “never say die” attitude who could inspire and lead by example, was ultimately far more important in tackling this task, than someone with beverage experience and pedigree.

Successful Sisters: Determination and Drive
T
hose two words have always stuck with me throughout my entire life. Sure to most people determination means setting a purpose and drive means to move something by force, but to myself and my sister it means much more than that. See to truly understand what motivates us you have to understand where we came from. We were raised by a single mother who on average made $10 an hour. We never had any child support, we never had health insurance and to shop at a secondhand store was our norm. By no means were we poor, we always had food on the table and she always got up and went to work everyday. She was teaching us. Our mother taught us how to work hard for what we wanted, to never rely on anyone else and I always go after what we wanted. And never accept failure as an option. But most importantly she taught us Independence. Independence to choose the life we wanted, the independence for what financial freedom would provide us and the to
be self-reliant. See she told us NEVER to accept a hand out and to give always and be gracious with our giving, even when we had very little of our own. There were many times I remember as a child, after all of the bills were paid my mom had $50 to live on to support three people for two weeks. $25 a week , and this wasn’t in the 1950s this was in the late 1990s. But even in those days we would donate, donate to women shelters, donate to animal charities, and donate to homeless people. Because we were always grateful for what we had. Fast forward to today, I look at my sister and she is a perfect shining example of what a strong woman can be. To say that I’m proud of my sister for leading a strong example of a strong woman, wife and mother would be an understatement. I learned from watching my sister and from the lessons that my mother was instilling in us. I purchased my first home at 18 years old and went onto own over 15 different homes and rental properties by the time I was 30. See I became a Realtor, I wanted to be in control of my own life and my own income. I always was an entrepreneur at heart. I wanted to Live a life by design, a life where my income will have no ceiling. I entered the real estate business at the very young age of 18 years old and rose to the top of my field by the time I was 21. At age 25 I was I was being interviewed by magazines and news outlets to go over my “secrets of the business”. Funny thing is, there was no secret. The only secret was a strong work ethic and the determination to be the very best. To date I’ve of been asked to speak in front of crowds of hundreds upon hundreds of people, I’ve sat on panels across the nation, I’ve mentored and trained hundreds of Realtors and helped structure entrepreneurs to become true business owners. I have been regarded as one of the top 25 women in real estate for the past decade and I’ve sat on over 20 board of director positions for various organizations and nonprofits. Currently Im so blessed to lead a young women’s youth group. Today i run and operate a team of nine real estate professionals all while having my three beautiful children and raising them in the industry. I’m blessed beyond measure. MY SINGLE MOM LIFE
Single “Moming” in Las Vegas
J
ust another manic Monday! Oh wait, what day is it? It’s Tuesday. I lost a day…again! This is typical due to my overworked, overstressed brain. I am single moming so hard! Mom by day headliner by night; this is my life. The morning after a show night is mostly organized chaos. If I’m lucky I’ll grab 4-5 hours of sleep, fit-full, restless sleep mind you. Who can shut their brain off after a full day? I lie awake in bed thinking about what I forgot to accomplish. I think about the thoughts that I think about then I think about the things that I thought about. Then I think about the thoughts that I’m thinking. If you cannot relate consider yourself lucky. 6:30AM Ok, I’m awake! The new puppy needs to pee and eat, the kids need to rise and shine, I need to make breakfast, make lunches, sign homework, and ensure no school necessities have been left at Dad’s house, which is usually the case. I hustle my 12 year old son off his phone and through our morning routine we’ve been doing for the past decade, which he seems to conveniently forget everyday! Clean clothes, brush teeth, brush hair, shoes, coat, backpack, lunch, and out the door by 7:45. Simultaneously my 14 ½ year old daughter cannot seem to get dressed because she’s chatting with the on line friends she’s made in Korea. Hopefully South Korea?! Thank you age of the internet! Now people reading this please empathize with me as I’ve been conveying to my children what priorities are and how to manage time since they were old enough to wipe their own bottoms. And yet this knowledge continues to elude them. Why is it so hard to remember the basics of hygiene? Parenting comes with lots of surprises along the way. Lots of mistakes, tears, some yelling, time-outs, needing a do-over, and a million hugs and kisses. It’s all worth it! Now back to my daughter a teenage girl! I know what you’re thinking…ornery, hormonal, eye rolling, foot-stomping, sassy teen, however I am blessed she does not fit the stereo-type. Thank you God! She is an angel, my Sabrina. But then I have a Nico too. Don’t judge! I love both my kids equally. I just find my impetuous, temperamental, passionate, ADHD, sometimes sweet, rambunctious son slightly more difficult to

deal with. But the “I love you’s” keep on coming and therefor keep me going day after day. Not only does single parenting pose several challenges such as flopping children back and forth between two homes, two sets of rules, two definitions of “healthy eating,” and both parents who free lance and have unpredictable schedules. Now let’s try throwing a date into the mix. “Fagetaboutit!” Just the thought of putting on make-up and heels to entertain a potential suitor is exhausting. It means I have to take time for me. I have forgotten this concept. That means a shower, get gussied up, and drive to God knows where in the valley to meet a stranger you may or may not even like. This is not high on my list of priorities. There are times I would like a male, grown-up companion, but I’m just too darn tired. My neighbor’s are my best friends so when I need wine and adult conversation I simply run across the street. Again, thank you God. When I became a Mom my priorities shifted. My wants, desires, and dreams were put on hold, willingly. I am now third in line to get my needs met. This is unconditional love; it’s what I signed up for. It’s what I love most about my life. That being said, I am constantly apologizing to friends and fellow entertainers for skipping out on their performances or having to blow off an event. Heaven forbid I try and schedule a coffee date with my bestie? Wouldn’t you know it the school calls and my son has a fever and needs to be picked up. This is my reality. My life is not my own. Now both children are home with the flu and I cannot afford to get sick otherwise the whole house will crumble. If I cannot sing, I cannot work. If I cannot work, I don’t get paid. If I don’t get paid, I cannot put food on the table! Who’s going to pay the mortgage this month? And on and on and on and on! Remember the Calgon commercial? Yes please, take me away. Now I have much to be grateful for and while I am appreciative of the Las Vegas entertainment community and their support throughout the years, I wish those who aren’t single moming could empathize with my daily dilemmas. It’s impossible to be in two places at once. Sorry I miss out on most red carpet appearances. But my desire will always be to care for my children.
I have been blessed with a career in Las Vegas spanning over two decades. I am blessed to be a “stay-at-home Mom” by day and a “Diva” by night. Being a single parent means I have to do the full-time job of two people. I am always compromising, defending, teaching, and learning. It’s truly exhausting and rewarding at the same time. Of all the shows I’ve had the pleasure of starring in parenting is by far the hardest role I’ve ever held. Thank God for my single Mom #girlgang besties. Vegas being the transitory city that it is can be hard to cultivate lengthy, meaningful friendships. I consider myself incredibly lucky. Not only do I have my 80 year old, amazingly spry father living in Vegas, but I’ve also developed my “chosen family.” These single mom’s have become my therapists, physicians, chef’s, baby sitters, and overall saviors of my sanity. Every crappy parenting misstep or rotten dating faux pas, they have my back and I have theirs. The saying “it takes a village” is so true! I’m so glad I’m single Moming in Vegas. It has taught me to go with the flow, be flexible, and forgive myself for my imperfections. Thank you to my family and friends who have gotten me through some very rough years, you know who you are and I love you. Now I gotta go. The kids gave me the flu! MV

Matzinger Institute of Healing
P
eople often ask me, “How did I come up with the idea of Matzinger Institute of Healing?” My response, “because of my son, we ran out of options with conventional medicine and I was not going to give up until he was healed.” My son, Harley, was born with a rare genetic condition called Angelman Syndrome. Angelman Syndrome is a condition in which there are deletions on chromosome 15; the result of this genetic mutation manifests as developmental delays in language and motor skills. There are significant neurological dysfunctions, which impact his health, normal daily functions, and seizures. At the age of 6.5 years, Harley was challenged with uncontrollable seizures. I followed the conventional medical standards for treatment and Harley was placed on multiple medications with no benefit of resolving the seizures. In addition, Harley suffered several adverse and detrimental reactions from the medications. Harley was significantly deteriorating, unable to function and dying in front of us. Desperate to save our son, I chose to step outside of the realm of conventional medicine for a treatment. Our searches lead us to Lipid therapies (PK Protocol)

developed to stabilize cell membranes and transform the outcomes of multiple medical conditions. Within 72 hours of using the Lipid therapies along with placing Harley on a specific eating plan and oral supplements, Harley seizures ceased and all medications were discontinued. As a result of my quest to save our son and circumvent the pitfalls of conventional treatments, the Matzinger Institute of Healing was born. Master Event Planner You have a very interesting backstory can you give us the highlights? When I was a baby I was left in a basket at a church in Seoul Korea and was found by a priest. I was raised in the Star of Sea Orphanage before I was eventually adopted by an Italian American family from Massachusetts. Last year I returned to Seoul on my birthday to visit the same church where I was abandoned and had the opportunity to spend the entire day with the children in the orphanage. It was such a monumental life experience. What do you love about event planning? I love creating something from nothing. I think that’s the essence of being a true entrepreneur. There’s something so intrinsically satisfying about the planning process, you get to see all of your creative ideas realized at each event. What would be a stand out event for FNOM Worldwide? We are very fortunate to work on events for so many incredible brands but I’d have to say our marquee event is the Corona Gameday Super Bowl Party. Over the last 4 years attendance has grown by more than 100%. Each year we have guests that fly in from across the country just for the party. This year Cypress Hill performed and Wayne Newton popped in as a surprise guest, it’s a lot of fun! You have a long track record of events but you’ve been doing a lot of speaking engagements, including Keynote Speaker for Mayweather Promotions Titans of the Trade. Do you see yourself doing more of this in the future? Definitely, I genuinely enjoy sharing my story because it was 7 years before I had my first successful event. I know there’s a very thin line between failure and success, so if my many failures can inspire just one person to stay in the game long enough to reach their break through then it would all be worth it. Las Vegas Entrepreneur Kema Ogden Wears Multiple Hats in Spearheading Community Projects As a long-time Las Vegas community-minded business entrepreneur, philanthropist and CEO Kema Ogden wakes up every morning refreshed and eager for the daily challenge of advancing remarkable community changes. Kema has the distinction of being Nevada’s first female minority owner of a

owntown Summerlin is quickly becoming a go to development destination for sports facilities. Come 2019, Downtown Summerlin will welcome The Las Vegas 51’s into their lively, award winning master planned community with a brand new State of the Art stadium. Downtown Summerlin is already home to the practice facility, City National Arena for the Hockey Team, Las Vegas Golden Knights. The new Stadium will be called “The Las Vegas Ball Park” and will have the capacity to seat 10,000 people. It is an overall win-win for the Minor League team, Fans, and Downtown Summerlin. Summerlin began its development in the
1990’s by the Howard Hughes Corporation. The community is “ranked in the country’s top 10 best-selling master-planned communities for nearly two decades”. Downtown Summerlin began its first development phase in 2014 and today offers retail shops, restaurants, and entertainment, all within a short walking distance. Clark County Commissioner Susan Brager stated, “This new stadium will be an incredible asset for our community”. HE MARKET IS HOT: The local Las Vegas real estate market is on fire! And it’s set to be cooking for the next few years! With the onset of our national sports teams, The Las Vegas Knights Hockey team, and the Las Vegas Raiders, this town is set to explode with real estate values. The under $300,000 home market is selling super-fast. 83% of homes in this rage are selling in 60 days. Some homes, if set to sell right, and move in ready, are selling as quick as same day. And in this market, some properties for sale are receiving multiple offers, as much as 20-25 offers on the same house, all at once. The median price in Vegas is now at $260,000, which is up 10% from last year, and these homes are flying off the shelf. In some cases, homes in this price range are selling “over appraisal” because of the shortage of homes for sale in today’s Las Vegas market. (Recent MLS count was only
5157 homes on the market). And 2017 Sales are outpacing last year 2016. Luxury homes, ($750,000 and higher), are also moving at a fast pace than usual. Average days on luxury market are around 120, and the selling prices are very close to the listing price, if not the same. For those in a pinch for the down payment, you might want to consider the HIP program! Home is Possible. Many lenders are offering this “Grant” program, to assist you in coming up with your entire down payment. Very attractive for those who thought they could not buy a home. Steps To Buying A Home In Today’s Market… It’s A Sellers Market Out There!
S
o you are ready to buy a home here in Vegas? Well before you begin that journey, take my advice to avoid some of these common mistakes and pitfalls…. that often lead to financial unrest and often emotional disheartenment. First be aware that it’s a “SELLER’S MARKET” which has adverse effects on the BUYER. The Seller has certain advantages in a Seller’s Market, that don’t usually occur in a balanced market. Homes that normally take 3-4 months to sell, are selling now in 3-4 days! And some with 10-20 offers on the same house, in ONE DAY! Buyers have to be READY! When they find that perfect home, they need to have all guns loaded and ready to seal the deal! Here are my personal steps I recommend for all my buyers in this Seller’s Market. PREQUAL LETTER: Get your prequel letter asap! First things first! A prequal letter is a Pre-Qualified Letter from a Mortgage Lender, stating that they have prequalified you for a certain amount of money to buy a house. To the Seller, that means you are strong, already qualified, and can close the home and move in quicker. You look like a much stronger buyer than everyone else. Don’t even go looking at homes, till you have that letter in your hand! That’s the Golden Ticket! OFFER OVER LIST: Be prepared to offer “Over List”, which means offering MORE than the Seller has the home listed (priced at). Time well spent to prepare you for this exciting chapter of your amazing life!! CHOOSE A GOOD REAL ESTATE AGENT: In my opinion, the most important decision you can make. Google and real estate websites are not up to the minute accurate, however your agent has instant and accurate access to the current status of any home. The home you see on your computer could already be sold. Outdated and old information. Your agent is also looking out for your best interest. Most people wouldn’t go to court without a lawyer, and I wouldn’t go looking at homes without a Professional Real Estate Agent. They know the questions to ask, how to negotiate a better deal, and they have the resources to protect you along the way. MAKE A LIST: Sit down and put some thought into your search. What area of town do you like? Do schools matter? Shopping? Parks? How many bedrooms? Baths? Pool? Fireplace? Garage?

Mordechai, how did you get started? In 1973 I was offered a management position for the fine jewelry store at the Las Vegas Hilton that was owned by an absentee owner. At the time, he felt that the store could perform better with a management change and that’s why he brought me in. When I got there I made major changes - the most constructive one was changing our hours to be open very late, given that we were in a casino, I felt like that was a no brainer. Sales improved drastically right away. While I was manager there, I had a chance to design and create special pieces of jewelry for Elvis Presley; I designed the piano ring for Liberace, and many other pieces for other celebrities. The owner later decided to retire and he offered me the store. I took over the store and after few months, I decided to open a small shop with 4 used showcases on Western Avenue. I chose to open in the industrial area; an area with lower rent so that I could pass on savings to the customer. My goal was to give the customer the very best price and service from the beginning. Through word of mouth and also catering to many entertainers, sports, and Hollywood figures; I built many friendships with them and many of them starred in my TV commercials which became very well-known at the time and soon people began to know me by my first name. Within a few years we continued to expand and open very highend stores in major hotels in Vegas. How does the customer service implement the positive impact on a customer’s experience? Since the birth of The Jewelers Inc., customer service has been the most important aspect of our company. We treat our customers like family and because of that, we have had customers that have shopped with us for over 40 years and multiple loyal generations shopping with us. Word of mouth has continued to spread and because of our exceptional customer service and extraordinary diamonds and jewelry, people come in from all over the world to shop with us and become part of The Jewelers family.

Patios was growing into the unquestioned #1 player in Las Vegas for backyard projects.
Four years into owning their first business, Matt and Jess Lane were flying high. They were 20 something year old business owners and had already gone from starting Proficient Patios in their home, to expanding to a small downtown office, to a 2000 sq. ft. showroom on Eastern, then to a 25,000-sq. ft. showroom. Business was great, their first child was growing up and everything was well. Then the shocking news hit them like a ton of bricks, their 4-year-old daughter Brianna, had been diagnosed with a rare childhood cancer called Neuroblastoma. The prognosis wasn’t good; about a 50/50 chance that she would survive her treatment plan and then a 50/50 chance that the cancer would not return within 5 years’ post treatment. Fast forward 5 long years; Brianna is 3 years clear of her last treatment and couldn’t be doing any better. They have since expanded their family to include daughters Karina and Catalina. The brisket is smoked for approximately 10 to 12 hours which makes it so tender and succulent, while maintaining the smoky charred crust. We ordered the BBQ spare ribs as a combo plate, with barbecue baked beans, sweet corn with smoked butter, zesty potato salad and the Vegas slaw. The ribs were rich in moisture with a divine, sweet flavor after being in the smoker for seven hours and the Vegas slaw was heavenly with a one of a kind ranch and mayonnaise-based slammin bamma white BBQ specialty sauce.

Laid Off Searching for a new job after getting laid off is a difficult and exhausting process. It can take a few months before someone reaches out to you. Instead of explaining to your future employer about why you left your previous job, talk about your successes and what you have accomplished in your last employment. Focus on your contributions and less about the circumstances that resulted in your termination.

The Reason I Got Married

ating was not easy! I was single for six years after my divorce. A friend of mine, Mark Shaffer, asked me to write an article on what Rachel, my wife, did right. Here is my answer: I felt damaged from a very toxic relationship. The woman I had been dating tried to change me as a person. In her efforts to “make me a better man” or “the kind of man she deserves,” in the process, severely hurt my self-esteem. I had begun to believe my ex-girlfriend, that she could easily do better than me, as could most women. I was not a good man. Some women I dated were more interested in my status or money than me. I had different values than most. Some I was incompatible with and others I did not have any chemistry.
best friend’s wives who had noticed what was happening told them that they had to take me on a trip to Columbia and not to bring me back until I knew I had to date and marry Rachel. I did go to Columbia, and on the second night, my best friend told me he wanted me with a nice girl. He said I was a family man and needed that. I told him how hard I had been looking for the right girl and how unsuccessful I was. He said, “She is right in front of you, date Rachel.” I told him I was not good enough for her. I told him she deserved a faithful, loyal, successful, good man who would sacrifice all for her, worship her and never hurt her.
Rachel was a good friend who became my best friend for six months. She third wheeled most of my dates. We laughed at many of my unique experiences on dates as well as hers. She had been recently divorced. We began spending more and more time together and talking more and more on the telephone. My friends and hers started to notice we would spend more time together than we would with our dates when we were out together. Both of us had been through rough breakups and did our best to pick the other up. We both worked hard to show the other their worth. All I, like any man, has ever wanted is to be loved for me, exactly as I am. As my best friend, Rachel loved me for me, exactly as I am. Please understand, I did not believe I was a good enough person to date Rachel. Rachel is sweet, gentle, virtuous, loyal, faithful, loving and gorgeous. My ex-girlfriend had me convinced I was unworthy of a decent woman such as Rachel. She was my best friend. She deserved better than me. As my best friend, Rachel made me feel great about myself. Like my friend, I put no guards up, so she got to know me precisely as I am. She knew me and made me feel awesome about me being me in every way. Unbeknownst to me, my friends began to notice the way I spent time with her, protected her, how cautious and caring I was with her. They saw that I was always looking for her at events to make sure she was okay and having fun.Two of my

He said “Wow, you must love her because that’s what you want for your daughter.” I responded, “of course, I love her, she is my best friend in the world.” He told me no matter how I felt; I was a good man. He reminded me I was very faithful and loyal to my ex-wife in my first marriage. He pointed out that I was successful and kind. I told him I could not date her because I cannot hurt her or lose her. He then said, “So you are willing to love her and suffer yourself by staying quiet, so you won’t hurt or lose her.” He continued, “That’s exactly the kind of guy we both want for our daughters, a man who would sacrifice themselves for them, could never hurt them and would even sacrifice himself to protect them. You are exactly what Rachel deserves my friend.” I woke up when he said that. I knew I was good enough for Rachel if I would treat her as I wanted my daughter treated.

So, two weeks after the trip I told Rachel I was in love with her and wanted to date, and she felt the same! She knew me as I was and loved me that way. She loved me for me. I fell so much more in love with her knowing that. Then we started dating, and I realized she was perfect. Here are the reasons why I feel she is so wonderful. She never makes me feel like she could do better. She makes me feel like the king of the world. She did not want to change me at all. She loves me just as I am. She makes me feel accepted and amazing about myself. She never asks me for trips, gifts or money, she only asks for my time. She wants only to be with me. She did not look at her phone on 25% of our dates. She was interested in me, not her phone. Today that says a lot! She is fiercely loyal and will not let others speak unkindly about me. She is faithful and respects herself and me. She made and still makes me feel like I can do anything. I know with her by my side, I honestly can do anything. I know in my heart whether I am wealthy or penniless, she will always be there, because she loves me for me. She makes me a better man. She is honest and kind to others! She supports my flaws and loves me with them. She makes me feel that to her I am the most handsome man in the world. She is the most beautiful woman in the world. I have always believed that you get what you give. For the first time in my life, I am with a woman who loves me, trusts me, and cares for me and my feelings, as much as I do hers. It is the best feeling I’ve ever had. I began dating Rachel on February 4th, 2017. I asked her to marry me on July 28th, 2017. I married her on August 4th, 2017, so we have been together as a couple for 13 months. My heart has found peace it had never known. The hardest part of my day is being away from her. The best part of my day is seeing her again. I love her more than ever before. For the first time in my life, I am with a wonderful woman who loves me for me exactly as I am. I sure hope she knows I love her exactly as she is because I do. I love Rachel. She never tried to change me. She is the most amazing and beautiful woman in the world to me, and that’s all that matters. I did not settle. I found my soulmate. I never dreamt I could know this kind of happiness, and I must thank her for that. I hope all the single people don’t settle and hold out for their soul mates so they can find that person who loves them for who they are, and they too can know true happiness. MV

hef Javier was raised in El Paso, Texas where his passion for cooking was undeniable. He studied Culinary Arts at the Art Institute in San Antonio. His determination and passion led him to relocate to Paris, France to broaden his skills. There, he graduated from Le Cordon Bleu with The Grande Diplôme for cooking and baking classical French cuisine. He quickly relocated to Las Vegas where he started working at Postrio with Wolfgang Puck. Chef Javier quickly advanced and landed his first Executive Chef position at Tremezzo at the young age of 25. He continued expanding his knowledge into other cuisines while working at Vic and Anthony’s at the Golden Nugget, Mi Casa at The Silverton, Mercadito at Red Rock Resort, Brooklyn Bowl at The Linq and Whist Stove at The District at Green Valley Ranch. In 2015, Chef Javier opened his first restaurant, Kitchen Table, carefully crafting his concept of “A Social Eatery” where customers could come together, converse and enjoy a style of cooking typically only found on the Las Vegas Strip. Ingredients ½ Chicken 1 cup Chile Arbol 1 cup Chile Guajillo 1 cup Sugar 1 cup Salt Cilantro Butter 1lb Plugra Butter 1 Shallots 2 Limes 3 bunches Cilantro Chicken Preparation Roast and blend the Chile Arbol and Guajillo with the sugar and salt for 10 minutes Cut the chicken into quarters and dust the chicken with the chile blend Roast the chicken in the oven for 20 minutes at 350 degrees Cilantro Butter Preparation Blend the Plugra butter, shallots, lime juice, cilantro and shallots at room temperature Place over the Chicken immediately after removing from the oven so that it melts onto the chicken.

Pia’s Perfect Life!

I
had the pleasure of enjoying a wonderful kitchen chat with the amazing Pia Zadora, and getting to know this amazing woman up close and personal has been the highlight of my year during 2017! We became friends as co-judges on the Miss America Pageant that year. Sequestered for three days with 5 other amazing peers, we had breakfast, lunch, dinner and drinks together, and never, did I think I would be sooooo delighted, as I was! Talented, fun, humorous, classic, charitable, hostess with the mostess, and just adorable, are only a few of the words I have for her. But it wasn’t always easy, as Pia tells… Proud, Polish and born in Hoboken, NJ, Pia started in showbiz at the early age of seven on Broadway as the youngest daughter in Fiddler on the Roof. (Which she celebrated the 50th reunion, with Josh Grovin on the violin, back in 2016). Pia was a shy kid and her mom thought it was best to put her in a parochial school. Her mother was very protective of Pia, and although Pia loved her mother, Pia felt way out of place at her school. She “thought the nuns were penguins,” lol. It was very hard for her and began to overwhelm her with anxiety. So through some caring advice, Pia wound up at the American Academy of Performing Arts, where she can be herself, and express herself as she likes. Then one day, Burgess Meredith was scouting for a new young actress. He invited her mom to have Pia audition for a new show he was directing. Against 100 other kids, Pia won the audition and got the part… for the leading role! She spent a few years after that on Broadway in different roles and plays, and remembers one day, at about 9 years old, sitting on the back steps with a then 17-year-old Bette Midler, sharing stories and dreams of this business. Two of her proud plays included, “We Take the Town” with Robert Preston, and “Henry Sweet Henry” among others on Broadway. Breaking out of her shy life was still a challenge, however it was one particular friend she met during a performance in Midgie Purvis, named Tallulah Bankhead, who taught Pia a big life lesson… “You do what you want to do!” Tallulah told Pia… and those words alone, got Pia to start learning how to be her own person! Pia’s personal breakthrough from shy to confident, and then things began to change for her career. Pia also starred in some commercials for Skippy, Kool Aid among a few others. her first movie offer was at the age of 9 or 10, called “Santa Clause Conquers the Martians” as she fondly mentioned she played Germore, the Green Martian princess! Pia’s childhood career continued and evolved into the age of 17, where she signed with a manager named Arthur. Her new manager took her to many auditions, and one in particular, “To Kill a Mockingbird” where she met a gentleman named Meshulam Riklis, aka Rick, who four years later, became her husband, for a period of 18 years. Rick, who Pia claims gave her independence from her stage mom, was fond of both Pia and her career as well. They had two children, who now live in LA. After a few years of restlessness, she created a new show for herself… as a nightclub singer… and broke in the show on Carnival Cruise Lines, which lead to opening for Neil Sedaka in Vegas. Pia hit Vegas in 1977 at the Riviera and married Rick, who owned the Riviera at that time, and with her new showroom act, her singing career blossomed, which took her to the stages of the Frontier, Caesars Palace, and many others. As a staple of our Las Vegas history, Pia, the captivating entertainer she is, opened on the Strip for many artists in days gone by, including Wayne Newton, Tony Bennett, Neil Sedaka, David Brenner, Don Rickles, Norm Crosby, Rich Little, Joan Rivers, and even toured the US opening for Frank Sinatra himself. At this point, her husband Rick recommended she star in a movie, to raise awareness of her name and build her brand so she could eventually headline her own shows. Then came “Butterfly”, to which she won the Golden Globe for, with Orson Wells, Stacy Keach, Edward Albert Jr. and Ed McMan, this epic film was shot here in Vegas, near Good Springs, Nevada. Pia’s list of proud films went on to include FakeOut, Lonely Lady, Hair Spray, and Naked Gun 33 1/3. Through the years, the marriage to Rick eventually came to a close in 1993. About that time, a well-known Director, Producer and Writer, named Gavin Grazer was doing a documentary film and reached out to Pia to star in his film. She agreed and at the launch party in LA for the new show, she met a fellow named Jonathan Kaufer who happen to be at the party. They hit it off as a couple, and and married in 1995. They were together for six years, all in Los Angeles, and had an amazing son named Jordan. During those six years, Pia raised Jordan and spent time with her new family putting her career on hold. However around 2001, the marriage to Jonathan came to a close. She got the bug for the stage again, and Pia went back to New York in
1995 for a short run as the star in the Broadway musical, “Crazy for You”. During Pia’s second divorce, she met her new husband, (a great guy I might add), named Michael, a former LV Metro Officer, who used to drive up and down the strip, and wonder “Who would name their kid Pia Zadora?” Michael and Pia talked for two years, and that lead to an engagement, that is still on fire today!! Michael moved to LA, to be with Pia, and the kids loved him. However, after a while Michael wanted to go back to Vegas, missing the excitement of his career. Pia agreed and so they packed up and settled back here in Vegas in 2011. One day, Pia tried on the old gowns, and said “Hey… maybe I could just do a little show here and there.” Pia started thinking about her career again, but didn’t want the three-month gig here, and the two-month gig there… she wanted her own place, some stability… with her own band. Pia loved going out with Michael, and they started to frequent Piero’s for dinner. That was where they met and invited Freddy from Piero’s to come see her show at Suncoast. Freddy loved the show, but pulled Pia aside afterwards and said, “You need your own room”… Piero’s! The Monkey Bar… the Perfect Spot for Pia! And now, for the last five years, Pia has been showcasing her talents at the famous Piero’s Italian Cuisine in the heart of Las Vegas, with a standing room only audience every weekend! I’ve had the pleasure of catching her show twice since we met, and ladies and gentlemen, I’ve got to tell you, it’s a night out of classic Vegas, pure fun, and one amazing gal and her talented band, the Joe Lano Trio. Watch for Pia’s new CD coming out soon, with more of a “Smooth Jazz” new vibe for Pia... the old songs, in a smooth jazz way. Pia shared with me her excitement and enthusiasm for another important part of her life… her charitable side She was very proud to of the honors, as the 2017 Recipient for the Ambassador for Autism Award from the Grant a Gift Foundation. Pia is a passionate and dedicated mother to her amazing 20 year old son Jordan, (who I might say, is my new bff ), to whom is on the spectrum. She guided Jordan himself to launch The Focus Program at UNLV, which serves kids with special needs in Las Vegas. Pia was able to influence her friends such as Carrot Top, Jerry Lewis, Rich Little, Frank Moreno, Marty Allen and others, to raise awareness for the fundraiser of 2016. The Focus Program mentors the kids with volunteers to help those who have hearing or reading issues, enabling them to advance through life and reach their career dreams. Pia
lit up as we talked about how she fosters these programs, showing the caring and giving side of Pia, off stage, that only a few get to know. Pia’s “Award Season” also bestowed her the prestigious Silver State Woman’s Award for 2017, which does not come easy. Today, Pia says everything is finally coming to culmination. Jordan’s struggles were long and hard, and “my struggles were doing things I didn’t want to do”… But that’s all changed now… and finally, she has so many good things to be happy for. The family core, the continuity she always wanted and consistency she was always looking for, an amazing man who is always there for her, the show that allows Pia to be Pia… and Jordan. Pia says, “People love Jordan at my show, they ask for him when he’s not there”… he and Michael are there in the audience just about every night, it’s family, it’s calm, it’s good, and it’s perfect, Pia’s Perfect Life! omen’s health is not a topic that gets as much attention as it deserves – especially when it comes to periods. Beyond understanding why and how menstruation happens and developing birth control methods, it’s something that doctors, and scientists don’t spend much time researching – which is unfortunate as there is still a lot that is not understood. Conditions like Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (or PMDD) are less common and effect around three to eight percent of women of child-bearing age – but still, little is known about it and few treatments are available for those who need it. Yet, some women have finally found relief to their debilitating PMS and PMDD through cannabis. In 2017, several cannabis products aimed at menstrual relief hit the market – and no surprise to some and a shocking surprise to many, they worked. Even those women who do not suffer from PMDD may still suffer from mild to severe cramping, that for some, is entirely debilitating. Menstrual cramps, or dysmenorrhea, is generally isolated to the lower abdomen and lower back, and occurs a few days prior to the start of the menstrual cycle – and can continue through the cycle. This and migraine headaches are often the most painful and debilitating part of a period, but there is little available for treatment aside from OTC and prescription pain medications, and using hormonal birth control to hopefully reduce the severity. Symptoms that may follow the cramping include nausea, dizziness, and lightheadedness. While both the menstrual cycle and the cannabis plant are extremely under-researched compared to other conditions and medications, what little is available makes it clear how and why cannabis can relief this pain. Cramps are caused by contractions in the uterus – and studies have determined that there are CB1 and CB2 receptors located in cells throughout the uterus.

These receptors are designed to receive endocannabinoids, which are produced within our body, as well as cannabinoids (THC and CBD for example) which are naturally occurring in the cannabis plant. It is because of these receptors that cannabis can provide the fact acting relief that many experience when using the herb for any ailment – but their specific location in the uterus makes them especially beneficial for menstrual cycle related pain. Cannabis is also known for it’s ability to relieve nausea, one of the reasons it is favored by cancer patients, but is also another reason that it is useful for women suffering from severe PMS and PMDD symptoms. Though topical creams, and cannabis edibles (usually chocolates) were the go-to for period pain before, this discovery has led to a new method of medicating – the cannabis suppository, or cannabis tampon. Some companies offer suppositories made of cannabis oil and coconut oil that are inserted into the vagina or rectum and melt away. Other companies created tampons that are pre-dosed with cannabis oil to help women find relief on their worst days. However, for some women these may be too strong, causing an almost “numb” feeling “down there” as described in reviews. Pekes, Paws & Tails Q&A: Founder of Pekes, Paws & Tails Rescue Tanya talks about her non-profit animal rescue and how you can help her cause. The founder also talked about how one rescue in particular helped her cope after experiencing the mass shooting at Route 91 & helping the injured on that tragic day.
Q: Have you always been an animal lover? A: I’ve always been an animal lover, but what got me, really, into starting a non-profit dog rescue was a pit bull [named Kia] that was found in Chicago. She was given away on Craigslist, [under the ad] “Free to a Good Home”. Two years later, she was found brutally tortured, every limb was ripped out of her body, [and] she was stabbed in her face. Everything imaginable...They called her Puppy Doe, they didn’t know her name at the time…they tracked down where she came from and [found] her name was Kia. When I saw that, I started reaching out to people on Craigslist and started warning them about the dangers of offering their animals, “Free, to a Good Home”, on Craigslist. Q: When was your rescue open? A: I started rescuing around seven years ago. The last three years, my rescue took off and I’ve been working with other states. I’m not just in Nevada. I also work with other countries. I’ve rescued in Mexico, I’ve worked with Canada. I’ve worked with other countries. The last three years, we’ve gotten very busy and then I finally filed for my non-profit status in 2016 so I can help get “PPT” government funding. Right now, I’m in the process of looking for a grant writer but right now, I still rely on fundraisers and public donations, stuff like that, to run my rescue. Q: Is there a particular rescue story that stands out to you the most? A: Yeah, there is. I recently rescued Haystack, he is an eight pound Pekingese that was on the kill list at Animal Foundation, which is our local kill shelter. He couldn’t walk. He had the worst heart condition. They took him to a cardiologist, worst heart condition. He had seizures, he had an anal tumor, [and] he had dental disease so he couldn’t be put under. They told me that Haystack would live, maybe, a week. Maybe four weeks tops. And Haystack ended up living 18 weeks. And, ended up running. You know, I got him a wheel chair, because he couldn’t walk. And, he ended up running. So, it was really, really great to see that. And, I rescued Haystack two days before I was in the mass

shooting at Route 91. That was October 1st and I didn’t go see Haystack October 2. I went to see him on the third, and every day it seemed like he was getting a little stronger. And, he was actually giving me hope that I needed to get stronger. And so, it was a really, really difficult time for me, October. And to watch Haystack, he motivated me. He gave me a reason to get out of bed and keep going. Q: I see, he helped with your emotional healing? A: Yeah, he played a huge role in that. And he just left us this month, but he had the most amazing 18 weeks of his life… Q: What kinds of volunteers does your rescue group need at the moment? A: We need fosters. Really bad. Q: Can you explain what a “Foster” can expect to do? A: Fosters provide the animal with a safe loving environment. While the rescue pays for the medical expenses. We ask that fosters take the animal to the vet when they have [an] appointment. If they have an adoption event, if they could take them to the event that would be great. Not all fosters can do that, which is fine. Then we can find transporters to pick up the animal. It would be ideal for fosters to be able to transport them where they need to go, while the rescue pays all of the bill. We pay medical supplies. [We] make sure the foster doesn’t have to pay anything other than open up their home and their heart, like we say. And really work with the animal. We rescued some animals with behavioral issues or medical conditions and some of them really need socialization. So, once they start working with animals, one-on-one, they either come out of their shell and really it’s a whole other personality than what they were in the shelter. Q: If Nevada residents are unable to volunteer being a Foster, how else can they help? A: We always want people that will network our events. Basically, get the word out there on fundraisers. Let people know that we have AmazonSmile. We are connected with iGive. So, even shopping on a daily basis. So, it will help the charity, which costs them nothing. Just a little pretense to get the companies to give back to us. Even with dog food, dog supplies. We are always willing to take items that aren’t being used.

The overpopulation problem is pretty out of control, especially here in Vegas, on the West Coast in general, California. So, considering adopting and saving a life, would be awesome. About 10 thousand animals a day get put down in the U.S. So, it’s an alarming rate…you can find any breed that would need rescuing. So, if they’re willing to wait ... Some breeds are harder to find than others, especially puppies… are hard to find in rescue. But, I see two, three year olds Pekingese, English bulldog. I mean, you name it, if you’re willing to wait and talk to different rescues about it, you’ll be able to find it. MV
