The M Resorts New Raider’s Tavern & Grill - April 1st of 2021 marked the first day our very own Raider’s themed bar and grill became open to the public. en Vereen is one of those entertainers who continues to delight, dazzle, and deliver remarkable performances, whether singing, acting, or dancing. His 45-year career spans Broadway, film, television, and streaming programming, along with being inducted into both the National Dance Hall of Fame and Theater Hall of Fame. He’s won the Tony Award winner, Golden Globe and Emmy nominee, Prism award, and multiple NAACP AWARDS to name a few. The beloved icon is now sharing his knowledge and experience instructing the next generation on all aspects of the entertainment industry. preparing new talent about what to expect in the entertainment industry and life in general. Virtually produced via the Bay Street Theater in The Hamptons, New York, Ben was approached by Scott Schwartz, Artistic Director of the theater, as well as a director for regional theaters, off-Broadway, and Broadway shows. Scott is the son of American musical theater lyricist and composer Stephen Schwartz and understands show business. Ben created the blueprint for the concept when everyone leaves their homes and is together again, pursuing careers and living their lives. “I am giving people all that I didn’t have when I was starting,” Ben explains.

He has lawyers teach how to read a contract, accountants teach how to manage their own money, and physical therapists on how to maintain good healthy bodies. Producers and directors from both the stage and film talk with the students about what to expect when first beginning and then working in the entertainment industry. Agents discuss with students what casting directors and others are looking for when new talent is seeking work in the industry. Recently Ben’s longtime and dear friend, Broadway legend Chita Rivera joined in on a session. He has partnered with a representative of the Actors Fund, who explains how its program enables actors and dancers to discover career possibilities and de-

He also urges everyone to understand that the pandemic has taken away so much and now, more than ever, is the time for everyone to love completely and give service to everyone.

Ben was 18 years old; he made his New York stage off-off-Broadway appearance in The Prodigal Son, where he met the writer of the show, Langston Hughes . Ben soon ended up in LasVegas, performing in Bob Fosse’s production of Sweet Charity starring Juliet Prowse , but would leave Southern Nevada to tour with the show. He last performed in Las Vegas prior to the pandemic starring in Steppin’ Out with Ben Vereen to a sold out audience at The Smith Center.

As for his very extensive career, Ben admits that “I am appreciative of everything I have been allowed to do because it has introduced me to wonderful people in show business who have inspired me to do what I can do today.”

In April, Ben will be filming a virtual show and admits that he held off since nothing compares to a live performance. But he wants everyone to know that he loves them and wants to entertain, looking forward to the time when he can perform

pring has officially sprung, and the flowers aren’t the only things blooming. We are officially relaunching MYNASHVILLE Magazine and are preparing for the launch of MYTAMPA BAY this year. How exciting! I recently took my first trip to Nashville, or Nash-Vegas like many locals call it, and it was simply beautiful. My favorite part was the food of course, who doesn’t love southern cookin’? It was a business trip but who says you can’t have a little fun? I got to experience the strip on Broadway, went bar hopping, and listened to some awesome local talent…I even knew a song! Although country isn’t exactly my favorite, I truly enjoy music and couldn’t help but throw on some flare jeans and boots and enjoy the Music City lifestyle. Overall, I had a great time and am looking forward to visiting again- when the weather is a little warmer. Next up is my favorite, the beach in the sunny Tampa Bay. I have been there before and would go back any day of the week! We are so excited to begin our journey in Florida, details on our first release will be coming soon! As the world is seeing progress and starting to reopen, Vegas is expected to come back better than ever! Here at MYVEGAS, we strive on highlighting the people and businesses in our community that keep us going. In this issue, we have featured Las Vegas’ Top 100 Men of Success. These remarkable men play a vital role in our city and I applaud each and every one of them for being the leaders that they are. Las Vegas has always been known for offering some of the finest, most exciting entertainment the world has to offer.


ver the decades, our showrooms and concert venues have been home to some of the most iconic names and shows in pop culture. Where some of these acts and performers may come and go, the truly engaging, popular and genuine talents seem to continue to reemerge time and time again over the years with endless appeal. They possess a special intangible magic in their music, charm and presence that keeps the otherwise fickle Vegas ticket buyer ready to support them time and time again over the decades. There are very few, if any acts that still grace the billboards and marques from that golden era of the 60s and 70s more than our American treasure known as The Righteous Brothers. The music made famous by these two men, Bill Medley and singing partner Bobby Hatfield, were not just extremely popular songs loved by multiple generations, but literally a musical photo album of our lives. Iconic songs such as “You’ve Lost that Lovin’ Feeling” and “Unchained Melody” are just a couple examples of how music can do more than simply touch the heart, but become the soundtrack to our personal emotions, relationships, and experiences. From the early years opening for the Beatles and being introduced to the Las Vegas stage in 1965 by none other than Frank Sinatra himself, the duo became friends very quickly and with bigtime success. This was followed by some ups and downs as the two singing powerhouses found themself going from being a duo to separating into solo careers to putting it back together all during the first decade. However, it was the movie “Ghost” released in 1990 which re-introduced “Unchained Melody” followed their hit songs in “Top Gun” and of course “Time of My Life” in the movie “Dirty Dancing” that began the resurgence of popularity with a younger generation of listeners that helped send them into legendary status. Unfortunately, as with many great things in life the Righteous Brothers came to what seemed like the end with the passing of Bobby Hetfield in 2003. Years passed as Bill Medley contemplated how

He felt it might not be possible to find someone who not only possessed Bobby’s incredible sound and range, but even more importantly could capture the energy and chemistry they shared together throughout their career on stage. to perform if he would be interested in finding a new replacement for Bobby. One of those offers was from one of his good friends, Jerry Perenchio of Caesars Entertainment Worldwide. He said “Bill… if you can find a partner, we have a showroom waiting for you.” Medley contacted Bucky and invited him to lunch and as they say… “the rest is history.” The time had come for Bill to make the “magic” happen again. A sort of Righteous Brothers 2, so to speak. Now emerging beside Bill Medley in the spotlight at the front of the stage, is someone else: younger, looser, a definite contrast to the staid, elegant Medley. His hair is long, his voice powerful and he is most definitely not Bobby Hatfield. His name is Bucky Heard.

changed the day Bill attended a wedding in Branson MO in 2015 and happen to strike up a conversation with a good friend Bucky Heard. Medley had known Bucky for several years and watched him perform in “Legends in Concert” alongside Andy Williams, Tony Orlando and many more. He also even sat in with Bucky’s late night party band called “The Horn Dawgs.” While talking at the party, Bucky mentioned he was now teaching and currently performing in a Journey tribute band there in town at the Tribute Theater and invited Bill to come on down. Intrigued by hearing this and not believing Bucky could possibly pull off something so vocally demanding as singing Steve Perry, he decided to take Bucky up on his invitation. “I was curious how bad this would be… I expected him to bomb,” Medley laughs. “As I sat there and listened to him hit those notes, I was simply amazed by just how talented Bucky was. It just dawned on me, I said Man, that’s the Righteous Brother. If I was ever going to do the show again, that’s the guy!” They both strengthened their friendship with each other during this time, as Medley had been receiving numerous offers

Weldon Howard Heard from Dadeville, Alabama was an “All American Kid” raised on Elvis and Chuck Berry records he heard during his parent’s parties. In 1974, he bought the Righteous Brothers single “Rock and Roll Heaven.” “That’s

probably my favorite RB song,” says Heard. “I played that 45 over and over, trying to sing just like Bobby. I literally wore the record out.” Influenced by bands like The Eagles, Prince, Chicago, and Journey, Bucky admits, “One of the ways I learned how to sing was by listening and singing along with KISS singer Paul Stanley, so often in fact that as a punishment, my parents would confiscate my records.” Heard’s appreciation for the nuances of

both soulful crooning and all things that rock would prepare him for the biggest gig of his life. After spending years in various musical productions at Auburn University, Branson MI and on Royal Caribbean Cruise lines, Bucky was ready to take on the Entertainment Capital of the World standing next to one of the most beloved legends ever to hold a microphone. It was March 2016, and all eyes and ears were on Harrah’s Casino showroom right here is Las Vegas. Too much fanfare and excitement, The Righteous Brothers were back in action, ready to thrill audiences with a new killer band, a new fresh, enthusiastic, blue eyed singer hungry to prove his worth and a man that needs no introduction. Once again, after almost 50 years, Bill Medley and his capable new partner Bucky Heard were set to take appreciative audiences on not just an amazing 2 hour show of great music and entertainment, but to take them on an emotional roller coaster ride. The new show opens with some standards before performing their first hit, “Little Latin Lupe Lu,” then during a brief interlude, Heard formally introduces himself. He says, “Ladies and gentlemen, this is a wonderful opportunity for me, I am a huge Righteous Brothers fan just like you; even more so, I’m a huge Bobby Hatfield fan, and I’m honored and privileged to keep this music alive.” Since this opening date they have now performed countless sold out shows at Harrah’s and concerts all around the country, but still call Las Vegas home. “Performing with Bucky has been great. He is a great singer and a wonderful guy. I could not have asked for a better partner. He’s a hard worker and he has a beautiful family” states Medley. I, Zowie Bowie personally met Bucky soon after he came to town and immediately found not just a new friend, but also someone that gave me more of a feeling of being my brother. I would guess that most people that meet Bucky or are in his presence would tell you the exact the same thing. He makes you feel like family the instant you meet him. I can say from personal experience with doing over 6500 shows, that if you can establish that type of “family style” relationship with your audience, you not only make fans, but friends for life. Bucky and his talented dancer wife, AJ have been married now for 26 years after meeting while performing together on the Royal Caribbean Cruise line. Bucky recalls “It was truly Love at first sight”. As a result, they

are very proud of their fifteen-year-old daughter, Cydney who is an incredibly talented competitive dancer at the Rock Center for Dance in Henderson. As with all shows around the world, the curtain was closed in March of last year. Bill Medley now had his first break of this length in over 50 years. I personally had not had a single week off from performing and all that sensory overload in over 26 years… then March hit and the months went by during which time I simply say to myself “Now What?” I asked Bucky if he had been doing anything to keep himself busy. “I was the vocal, acting, and musical theatre instructor for Dance Branson School of the Arts, in Branson, MO where we moved from, and when the Covid19 outbreak shut the shows down, I got back into teaching. My method of vocal training that I created is called, PREP, which is an acronym for the 4 areas a vocalist must be proficient in if they are to reach their full potential as a vocalist: Pitch – Range – Endurance – Power. I work diligently with my students from all over the world via Zoom and Facebook to dramatically improve these areas through carefully designed vocal exercises and breathing techniques”. The Vegas Room and The Tuscany. He is excited to have written (along with R.B. musical director, Timothy Lee) the entire score for a musical that is set to make its “Off Broadway” debut at the Player’s Theatre sometime in the fall. The show is called “Mike and Mindy’s Wild Weekend Jam.” When asked of the iconic singer what success has meant to him… Medley defined the word success as “Freedom”. “Freedom to have a certain amount of success means that you are doing something right.” Doing something right is exactly what he did by bringing the Righteous Brothers back to his fans right here in Las Vegas and choosing the only man for the job, Mr. Bucky Heard. I know I speak for all of us here in town as well as fans and friends around the world when I say we can’t wait for the Vegas return of The Righteous Brothers!!!! MV


THREE SQUARE INTERVIEW ON FOOD INSECURITY Food insecurity has affected close to half a million people in southern Nevada since the COVID-19 pandemic devasted so many of our citizens in 2020 and 2021.


ortunately, Three Square Food Bank, led by its President and CEO Brian Burton, was able to provide a quick and easy way to ensure families have food. With the help of amazing community partners, Three Square has continued its mission to provide wholesome food to hungry people, while passionately pursuing a hunger-free community. In late February of last year, many still had their jobs and kids were in their classrooms at school. Within a month, people were searching for toilet paper, paper towels, Lysol spray, hand sanitizers and masks at the stores. Food wasn’t seen as a problem, except for the hoarders who managed to purchase all the meats, eggs, milk, and butter. Soon, businesses were laying off workers. At the peak, Las Vegas had the highest unemployment rate in the nation with 33% of hard-working employees out of work. For the first time, it wasn’t just the poor affected. Middle class was also negatively impacted. The bit of money they had saved for a rainy day was gone. The kids

were no longer in school. For a brief time, pride kept the middle class from heading over to Three Square for food. Some never believed they would be in a situation of food insecurity, yet that was exactly where many found themselves, down and out with empty stomachs. The greatness of Three Square is not asking to see their client’s driver’s license or having to fill out a long form. For families dealing with hunger, little else matters. All Three Square requested was a name, address, and age. In other words, no one had to be embarrassed about receiving free food. Brian Burton has been in the business of combating food insecurity and taking care of those in need for more than 20 years. In addition to two master’s degrees – a Master of Divinity and Master of Business Administration – Burton knows how to forge ahead when faced with challenges like the COVID -19 pandemic. He knows what it is like for people struggling with extreme hunger and food insecurity as he sees this all the time at Three Square. Brian dedicated his life to keeping vulnerable families safe and healthy and under his supervision, management and leadership, Three Square grew to become one of the largest food banks in the country. Brian understood the painful look in the faces of people that needed what Three Square could provide, free groceries for them and their families. “It was incredibly heartbreaking to see middle class families – some who had even volunteered with us – now coming to Three Square for food. It was, and still is, a difficult time for so many – we understand just how important anonymity is for our neighbors in need. Today, we continue to distribute food at dozens of drive-thru sites and walk-in pantries across the valley. The drive-thru sites have proven to be very helpful as people can just drive up, open their trunk and drive away with food for their family.” Prior to the pandemic, 12.9% or one in eight valley residents were struggling with hunger – now approximately 19.5% or one in five are food-insecure. wide shutdown last March resulted in a tremendous loss of jobs overnight. The life-saving role of Three Square and food banks across the country has been on full display since then. Nevada was one of five states with the highest projected percent change for food insecurity as it jumped 57% this past year. People waited in lines that stretched for miles at food distribution sites. Food scarcity could have easily been a problem due to the sharp increase in need. However, Three Square and its partners stepped up to the plate providing lean protein, fresh produce, and other nutritious foods one needs for a balanced meal. “The pandemic changed us all,” says, Brian. “We saw neighbors lose loved ones and jobs, businesses close, children struggle with online learning and mental health issues as a result. Food insecurity was a very real issue before the arrival of COVID-19, but now, more than 440,000 people don’t know where their next meal is coming from. This experience has served as a sobering reminder that not having money to buy food is terrifying, and it can happen to anyone, anywhere, and at any time.” Las Vegans are survivors. The community stayed strong after a gunman on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay killed 58 people and injured hundreds of others at a country music festival on October 1, 2017. Las Vegans stayed strong providing help during the pandemic with executives sharing private planes to provide PPE’s to Nevada and other states. The pandemic has been tough on our tourist industry, yet there is no doubt that together, the city will remain strong as Las Vegas will not only survive, Las Vegas will thrive and be bigger and better. MEET THE WOMAN BEHIND SIKARA Aisha is the dedicated founder and co-owner of Sikara Medspa. She also serves as the president. Her husband, Dr. Sheikh, is co-owner and serves as the on-site medical director. They created Sikara Medspa out of a desire to provide a luxury, high-end medspa where people’s needs are not only met, but also understood.


ogether they have two children, ages 11 and 8. Aisha left the world of finance to become a mother to her two boys. As they have grown up, she elected to venture back into the business world, where she strives to make a difference by bringing out the best in people in many ways.

How do you find the time to balance being a mother and being the president of a company? Truly, it is all about the people you surround yourself with. My husband is incredibly supportive, and we share a lot of the responsibilities of raising our sons. Sikara may be a new business, but our team is phenomenal, and each of them are experienced and highly skilled at their respective crafts. I may be “President,” but it really is a team effort. I am so proud of our team and all that they bring to the table.

What made you choose to open a medspa? As a teenager, I had acne. I would say that I have spent the better part of my adult years trying to improve those scars. In my early twenties, I went to see a dermatologist in the LA area. After evaluating my skin, he said “you could be pretty, if you didn’t have these scars.” As the owner of an aesthetics practice, I will never allow any of our clients to be made to feel that way. Beauty, to me, is about much more than your physical appearance; it is about confidence and feeling good about ourselves. Unfortunately, many of us find that our confidence is hindered by what we see as ‘flaws.’ Sikara is about so much more than superficial beauty to me. It is about helping people address their concerns so that they can feel beautiful and confident. They can go out into the world and do everything they want to do without feeling held back by their insecurities. I believe addressing those things allows people to change their lives. It has been tricky learning to navigate through a pandemic; how have you and your company learned to navigate through those challenges to not only sustain, but to thrive? Opening in the middle of a pandemic meant we had to reevaluate how we do things and be strict about our cleaning procedures. We do our absolute best to ensure the safety of our guests and our team. Furthermore, having an on-site medical director not only helps to affirm our commitment to the safety of our guests, but also allows us to provide all aspects of their experience in a safe and effective manner. We do this while still meeting the rigorous standards that are set forth during this historical time.

How do we thrive? It is about having the utmost faith in our business and our mission. It is about our team, the services we offer, and the results we help achieve that make Sikara what it is. Any challenges we face do not change who we are. What advice would you give to anyone facing the same challenges you may face? Be adaptable. Surround yourself with people who are willing to work through a challenge and find a feasible solution. Whether it be a pandemic or any other challenge, just be open-minded and think of the big picture. I believe in every area of our lives we must be adaptable and fluid. Things do not always go according to plan, but we must do the best we can in any situation. When I envisioned opening our doors, it was quite different in my head. The pandemic changed things. We made the decision to proceed with our opening and focus on our vision, our philosophy — and allow that to speak for itself. How would you describe your vision for Sikara? Sikara is unique. We are results driven, and our business is transformational, not transactional. You can feel safe and understood; we can help our clients achieve medical-grade results, but in a luxury, high-end, spa-like environment. Medical grade does not have to feel sterile! Sikara is an experience, and I cannot wait for all our guests to enjoy every moment of that experience. What words do you live by? “If you are going to do something, do it properly.” My mother instilled these values in me from a young age and to this day, I firmly believe in that philosophy. I try to incorporate that mantra in every area of my life. It is something I teach my kids as well. Time to talk about something we all hate, cellulite. One of the most frustrating things a woman can deal with. It seems to appear out of nowhere.


ight? Like one day, you are rocking the booty shorts feeling cute next thing, you are trying to make an extra large men’s t shirt look cute at the pool to cover our cellulite areas.

From my personal experience, if I don’t drink enough water then I end up with cellulite on my triceps and under my buttocks which is two very common areas for women, because women tend to store fat in triceps (back of the arm), low belly, hamstrings (back of legs) as well as our hips. No matter how much cardio you do and how much spinach you eat.. it still sticks with you. Has that ever happen to you? That’s because you need to switch to these tips. So what is cellulite!? It is when the fat cells congregate under the skin and create a dimple-like appearance above the skin. Some cellulite is just in our genes but most of it can be treated by these following tips.



Having bad eating habits will never do us any good. Its ok to have your cheat meal or cheat day but on a normal basis try getting at least 3 good meals of good, clean whole foods. I recommend a lot of greens, fruits, whole grains and lean proteins to keep your body good on the inside and out.



When you lift, your muscles will grow and help tighten the skin, which will help diminished the appearance of cellulite. Don’t be scared to go heavy, the heavier the better but always remember good form over all! I do recommend to mix of isolation and compound movements to really get all areas and push yourself.


STAY HYDRATED: If you don’t drink enough water, you will end up holding more water which can make your cellulite look worse. Staying hydrated will keep things flowing and will be able to help the appearance of cellulite. So try to drink at least 8 glasses of water daily. I personally try drinking a full gallon a day, especially if I eat bad.



Working on breaking down that hard tissue and flushing your system with water right after will help get the toxins out so you will get your smooth appearance back. I recommend to foam roll after your workout and massage cellulite areas in the shower with warm water. Be sure to drink water after this to flush out the toxins.



This is something I actually just decided to try out. I got sick of buying all the creams that have a bunch of chemicals in them. So I took the natural route and decided to order grapefruit, rosemary, fennel and lemongrass. I mix them together with a little coconut oil and massage in, where it is needed.

Try these tips for at least 2 weeks and let me see those before and after pictures.

How did you get started?

This whole journey started from a blog, when my husband and I started infertility treatments. It was such an emotionally, spiritually, and physically taxing experience. I have always used my creativity as an emotional outlet, so I began writing everything from how I was feeling to the medications I was taking, what I was eating, where we were traveling to, and the shopping trips I was taking to make myself feel better. I had this little online community who were all going through the same triumphs and trials as we were, and it definitely provided some comfort. I was cheered on through every win and comforted through every loss. There was not a single moment in that three-year journey when I felt as if I was the only woman struggling. I knew as our time with IVF was coming to a close that I wanted to pivot this thing I had built. I considered all of the ways I could bring women some Therapie and the boutique space seemed like a no brainer. I wanted to serve women who might otherwise struggle to find unique pieces that fit well. I started online in 2017 while we continued treatments and signed for my first physical space at the end of 2019.


Where did the name Therapie Boutique come from?

My blog was very much my own personal form of Therapie and I continue to write there occasionally to this day. Every time a person asks about our name I am given the opportunity to share little pieces of my story and the issues that brought me here. There is power behind our individual stories and I just happened to turn mine into a brand. I still have a form of the original Blog Therapie, online, Therapie Boutique here in Las Vegas, and even a Group Therapie on Facebook.



What can customers expect when walking into your boutique for the first time?

What do you find exciting about your job every day?

I love playing in all the clothes and discovering the fabrics or patterns that make me happy, but I find the most joy in styling women for all of life’s new chapters. I’ve had women come to me after losing a significant amount of weight and needing a new wardrobe, women who need encouragement after a relationship change, and even women who once thought a certain style would never fit

How do you enjoy getting involved in the community?


We all need a little Therapie and it is my prayer every single day that I can spread some of it here in Las Vegas. I am a proud member of Women United. One of my favorite events is our annual suit drive in November where we collect professional wear for local return-to-work programs. I also sit on the Board of Directors for the Las Vegas Fashion Council. Not only do we strive to expand the Las Vegas economy through the fashion industry, but we also provide financial assistance to students and emerging artists through LVFC grants. Putting the body under pressure can help those places with closed blood vessels recover and grow. Hyperbaric chambers are beneficial for many different procedures in the medical field. It can be utilized as a stand-alone treatment or a procedure that can boost the action of the medicine, like antibiotics. For example, when you get a facelift, the pressure decreases bruising and accelerates the healing process. Patients who incorporate the chamber as part of their surgical process experience reduced swelling and pain, increased collagen production, minimization of scars, and accelerated healing allowing them to return to their normal activities sooner. Sometimes, the hyperbaric chamber can aid with infections, especially with implant infections. These are very difficult


infections to heal without removing the implant and treating the infection. By using the chamber, you’re able to utilize pressure oxygen which can heal the infection and spare the patient of further surgery. The chamber also helps with breast lifts and reductions, extensive liposuction, and bigger procedures, like mommy makeovers. How did you find your way into real estate? My family had real estate brokerages when I was a kid, about 8 years old, and my step-dad was one of the developers and Real Estate brokers of Indian Wells in Palm Desert, Ca. In addition, he also taught real estate law at night in Newport Beach, CA. I spent a lot of time in the desert heat and more time in Newport Beach at his classroom as free help. I always said to myself I would never get into the real estate business after seeing the ups and down of what my parents went through with real estate transactions. Sometimes you just fall into what you excel at and that’s how I found my way to where I’m at today with real estate as being the backbone of everything I do. I really enjoy helping people and can spend hours talking about real estate transactions and real estate finance.


Have you always been in real estate? No, actually I had to make a plan to pay for college and followed in the footsteps of some close actor friends that were on prime time television shows and one major film actor (Corky Pigeon, Ricky Schroder, Alfonso Ribeiro, and Adrien Brody). Between the advice and direction of these friends I was able to get a talent agent. Shortly thereafter I was cast in a co-starring role of the original “Skull” character on the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers back in

the early 90’s. After I finished my contract on the show, I completed my degree in Film and Television Producing then worked behind the camera as a co-producer and script development executive for Mutual Film Company helmed by Mark Gordon and Gary Levinsohn at Paramount Pictures. Following that I was offered a team talent management position by Benny Medina to be on the management team for Jennifer Lopez, Sean Combs, Selma Blair, Scott Foley, Dalton James, Elijah Wood, and Christine Taylor. My final role in the film & television industry was as a talent agent with Agency for the Performing Arts and then I took some time off to go back to college at UCLA and obtain a Mergers & Acquisitions specialty degree. I then opened a mortgage and real estate company in Las Vegas and Southern California. This is my calling in life and I guess you could say I’ve been in real estate since I was 8 years old. Since a young age, John Holland, Executive Chef and Owner of Rollin Smoke Barbeque, knew that cooking was in his bones. Growing up, John would ask his mother to prepare the Thanksgiving desserts, and even grilled for his friends and co-workers after long days in the Arkansas oil fields.

n a normal residential real estate market, Las Vegas has an average of 5,500 homes for sale. These days, the number of homes on the market is barely a third of that. That means homes are no longer on the market for a month or two before getting under contract. “The average listing time is one day right now,” said Leza Heed, a Las Vegas native who works with her son, Alex, to help both buyers and sellers get what they’re looking for. “We have a huge shortage of single-family homes on the market, and people are bidding way over list price.”

As a result, both sellers and buyers need to work with an experienced real estate expert who knows how to negotiate and has successful strategies for getting offers accepted. Leza said her in-depth knowledge of communities like Summerlin supports people who are ready to move. She explained that there are several reasons why the housing market is so hot in Las Vegas now. First, the stay-at-home mandates of the coronavirus pandemic had forced people to get realistic about their housing needs. Sasha Good, the owner of this award-winning interior design firm, is known to take on big, challenging projects, and this last one proves it yet again-- there is nothing Sasha can’t do!

The finished product was definitely worth the effort and is perfectly fit for a large family and friends gathering, with a King and Queen chair on each end and 40 additional chairs. Topped off with 3 huge crystal chandeliers that shine and reflect the black and white slabs, this space is award worthy. Not too many of us have a 30 ft. x 10ft shower with 4 huge rain shower heads


and 24 body sprayers, but Sasha and her team raise the ante on just your typical bathroom. Modern shapes and colors round out this bathroom as a space you wouldn’t mind spending hours in. In the design process, it can sometimes be difficult to come to a decision on one individual style. The clients of this remodel could not come together for the style of the house- the husband’s style being ultra-modern, and the wife’s being Hollywood glam. What started out as a southwestern home with heavy traditional finishes in brown and warm tones, turned into an incredible combination of styles. HIDDEN LAWS OF SIN CITY The city of Las Vegas is primarily known for many things including gambling, top notch entertainment, extreme heat, exciting nightlife and even more! After many years of fun, the city has needed to implement new laws to keep things in order. Most of us Las Vegas locals know many of our most basic laws that set us apart from other cities.


hese include, 21 being the drinking and gambling age, open containers of alcohol being legal on the strip and downtown, and even being able to legally elope with no waiting period. Now let’s dive into some of the more intriguing and merely unusual laws in the valley. Who doesn’t love feeding the birds? Well, the Clark County Commission isn’t the fondest of feeding the wild pigeons. As of November 2017, Clark County has made it illegal to feed the pigeons. The law states under Chapter 7.38.055 “(A) Except as otherwise provided in Subsection (B), it is unlawful and a public nuisance for any person to encourage the lingering, roosting or congregating of wild pigeons, whether on public property or private residential property.” Violation of this law would qualify as a misdemeanor and can result in a $1000 fine and six months behind bars.


We can all admit that we sometimes let those curse words slip at times. If you’re planning on going out on the town and cursing up a storm, you may want to rethink that decision. The City of Las Vegas Municipal Code 10.40.030 states that “the use of profane, vile or obscene language or words upon the public streets, alleys, or highway of the City is prohibited.” This can be considered indecent or immoral behavior. There is a number of things that the City has attempted to ban over the years as well. Although, Fremont Street is full of fun and quirky stores, street performers and attractions. Officials won’t allow a couple of things into the downtown attraction, some of those including hula-hoops and megaphones. These were mainly implemented as an attempt to scare away unlicensed vendors from preforming on Fremont Street. Also included

in the list of proposed bans is jugglers and Tasers, after an unfortunate altercation between a performer and tourist. Fortunately, this is still a battle being fought in the courts, as it may result in a violation of freedom of speech. After all, the fight resulted in slight bans toward oversized hula-hoops and some megaphone use. All in all, you will definitely want to stay away from feeding the wild pigeons and cursing on public streets, but you have some flexibility when it comes to the size of your hula-hoop on Fremont Street. I have been through the good, the bad, and the ugly times out here. But it is just one of those things that makes me appreciate this city even more.

For me, it is all about client interaction. I give my cell phone number to all my clients, so they can easily reach me if they have any questions or concerns. I encourage my clients to text me, so I can respond even if I am in a situation where I cannot answer the phone, for instance, if I am waiting for my case to be called in court. My clients having instant access to their attorney seems to be very comforting for them.


It sounds like you are embracing technology. What else are you doing to keep your office in the 21st century?



Well, for one, I try to maintain a paperless office environment. I am not the type of attorney whose desk is covered in so much paper that you cannot see over it. I cannot stand clutter so cutting out unnecessary paper is a nobrainer. Beyond keeping me organized, I have access to all the information that I need from anywhere that has an internet connection due to “cloud” access.


With so many exciting hobbies at your disposal, do you still enjoy being an attorney?

Absolutely. People always ask me how I am good at so many different activities and I guess it boils down to the way my brain works. If I am interested in something, I dive in, headfirst, becoming borderline obsessed with it, spending days, weeks, even months, researching and learning about all the small details until I have it mastered. I truly enjoy challenging myself. Law is one of the most challenging things to master because there is no black and white. A LIFELINE FOR SMALL BUSINESSES SURVIVING THE STRAIN OF COVID-19 As COVID-19 continues to loom, many business owners are contemplating shutting their doors rather than declare bankruptcy. Shauna Brennan, founder, and principle of the Brennan Legal Counsel Group, PLLC, offers this advice. “Do not go out of business. This is not like the 2008 recession, and while I believe things may get worse before they get better, there is a new remedy to keep your business going until the resurgence of Las Vegas.” A graduate of Notre Dame Law School and licensed to practice in four states, Shauna has over 30 years of experience. some lease terms and locations that it needs to close and vacate, allowing the business to terminate leases for undesirable locations and to restructure lease terms for locations that it wants to keep. Under this process, the business owner can retain ownership and control over the business and restructure all debt through plan payments from disposable income over a 3 to 5 year period. Mortgage liens can be reduced to the property’s fair market value, and any loan balance in excess of the value is treated as unsecured debt. Also, the process is much quicker than a Chapter 11 bankruptcy, which could take years due to infighting. For example, when a prominent Las Vegas casino filed for bankruptcy protection, the corporation had $11 million in working capital. Since it took years, by the time a plan was approved for reorganization, the $11 million had been spent on legal fees for all of the parties. Subchapter 5 only requires that the debtor pay their own legal costs and Subchapter 5 requires an expedited plan to be implemented within three to six months of the filing. This new protection by the law can save many businesses, especially those operated by families with several generations. Many multigenerational businesses employ parents, adult children, and possibly grandchildren. AFFORDABLE STRIPING & SEALING WHY IS PAVEMENT MAINTENANCE IMPORTANT? Well-constructed asphalt pavement has a luxurious dark color that is aesthetically pleasing and a smooth, even surface that provides excellent safety features. If the pavement is engineered correctly and receives the maintenance needed, an asphalt parking lot can last for up to 30 years before it needs a significant repair or reconstruction. A LIFE AMONGST CELEBRITIES GIVES ROOT TO A VEGAS BORN PRODUCTION COMPANY “I came to visit and never left. Now I am rooted here, and so is my business.”


rom rubbing elbows with some of the biggest names in the music business to pulling off technical production feats behind the scenes, corporate event and concert producer Michelle Johnson has made a name for herself in Las Vegas as the go-to person for one-of-a-kind experiences in entertainment. Her company, Diva Las Vegas Productions, produces outstanding, meaningful entertainment for television, conventions, corporate events, headliner concerts, and events all across the Las Vegas Strip. She is proud to be one of the few African American event producers to have high profile visibility in Las Vegas, and she is a proud winner of the National Association of Women Business Owners “Woman of Distinction” Award for her achievements in entertainment. Michelle is also an award-winning Las Vegas entertainer known as “Las Vegas’ First Lady of Jazz.” Her self-produced, sold out shows have been seen at The Smith Center in Myron’s Cabaret Jazz, The Space, and The Vegas Room. She is the 2020 Las Vegas Black Music Awards recipient of the Lena Horne Award for Musical Excellence. Her original song “I’m All In” has more than 24,000 views on YouTube. She came to Las Vegas on a whim after tiring of east coast winters and a life spent on the road as a backup singer to celebrities. By the time she arrived in Vegas, she had racked up a considerable resume as a premiere New York City recording session singer and performer. She had appeared in a Broadway play, become a popular singer on the jazz circuit, toured the world with the popular nineties group P.M. Dawn, sung on records by Elton John, Boy


George, and many others, and shared a stage with Paul McCartney, Slash, Kenny Loggins, Natalie Merchant, Don Henley, and several other artists. All of this from a young lady who graduated from Yale University with a degree in English Literature and kept a paralegal day job in Midtown Manhattan to get her through the lean months in a feast or famine business. It was a glamorous, fast paced life with some wonderful highlights, but after one too many winters spent hoping for a call to tour somewhere warm and affordable for a while, Michelle let her musical partner and boyfriend at the time convince her to check out the Las Vegas music scene “for a few weeks.” That was in 1995. What started as a brief trip turned into a new life, and what started as an entertainer’s life turned into a full event production company career. So how does that happen? As Michelle explains it, “Everyone knows that creatives are right-brained, and creating has always come easily to me. But my time studying at Yale, working at law firms, and then becoming a vocal section leader, tour manager, or whatever organizing role was needed to do all the business things that come with making art made me a natural for the left-brained side of the entertainment industry. My obses-

sion with “how things get done” is as strong as my passion for actually making art, and I have never been afraid to get my hands dirty. Early on, I was very interested in what the crew was doing, how the lights worked, how the sound gear was loaded, how video was created and cued in real time, how hydraulics worked on stage, how producers and directors made things happen, and so on. I think the best leaders understand all of the mechanics that go into their business (not just the flashy CEO stuff ), and if they can learn to delegate, they will do well.” So … what makes Las Vegas the perfect place to find that synergy? “In Las Vegas, I found a way to use both sides of my brain, and I managed to stay off of the road because many shows and artists come here and hire local talent. I did do some steady house gigs or touring work

with Gladys Knight, Sheena Easton and the late David Cassidy, but most of my interactions with artists are on a oneoff basis when they are on tour. I love that I can provide a 40-person gospel choir for a huge name like Barbra Streisand at the MGM Grand Garden (talk about bucket list!) and still go to bed in my own house that same night. Winwin! Memories like that are only made in a city like Las Vegas, where televised award shows and mega concerts keep producers and musicians steadily employed. One day I am recording tracks for a headliner, wearing a gown at a gala concert, or doing the National Anthem at a Vegas Golden Knights game, and the next day I am helping my husband to pack up backline and sound gear for a concert or writing a script for a company’s national sales meeting. It is never boring, and I like the mix of glamour and grit.” Michelle and her staff split their time between producing concerts, fundraising galas, and large scale business events. On the event side, Diva Las Vegas Productions provides talent, show gear, sets, scripting, graphics, video, and more to companies like Bayer, Mercedes, Microsoft, Google, Toyota, IBM, AT&T, HBO, MTV, the NBA, the CMA Awards, Comic Relief, and so many more. On the concert side, Michelle provides support talent for headliner tours and residencies, and her own Smith Center shows have ranged from “A Tribute to Ella”, a big band concert costarring Grammy-nominated jazz singer Jane Monheit, and “Forever Purple”, which celebrated the life of Prince and included a 30-person all-star cast of top Las Vegas singers and musicians,

Since the pandemic, she has done shows in small supper clubs like the new and very popular venue The Vegas Room, which managed to stay open during the pandemic lockdown while the rest of the city was shut down, due to its small size and ability to comply with Covid safety restrictions. She also performed several times at The Space, which thrived during the pandemic with outstanding live streamed shows and limited seating. Now that Vegas is opening back up, Michelle has plans to produce a new show at The Space in the near future. She will also be in concert at the Italian American Club in July and is on tap to return to the Smith Center once is reopens. “Hopefully this fall! … I can’t wait!”

MML Physical Therapy owner and president, Karen Crawford, PT, MS has always had a passion for health and fitness, and a purpose for Medicine. fter graduating in 1974, Karen started working per diem in different clinics in Houston. In 1987, Karen was asked to go to Afghanistan with a medical team during the war with Russia to help refugees on the Pakistan border. This incredibly humbling experience had a profound impact on her desire to work with injured people. After returning to the United States, Karen started working with a world renowned pain management physician, Dr. Prithvi Raj, who mentored her in the treatment of chronic pain patients. Dr. Raj had told Karen one day, “You have a gift with these types of patients and should work on this population.” As Dr. Raj and Karen worked together, they became published in the treatment of CRPS (Chronic Regional Pain Syndrome). She then went on to receive her master’s in mental health counseling, as the psychological component of her work was just as important as the technical. MML Physical Therapy, named after Karen’s three boys, Matthew, Mark and Luke, began in a surgical closet in a pain management clinic in 1992, utilizing only one employee and less than 300 square feet. Karen’s mission stood clear. She worked day in and day out over the past 10 years to promote her practice. As the practice evolved, she moved to a bigger office to accommodate her growing patient population. MML physical therapy now employs two other physical therapists and two physical therapy assistants. They continue to see chronic pain patients, but the practice has expanded to provide services to acute care, post-op rehabilitation and general orthopedic patients as well. Karen and her team offer individualized therapeutic exercise programs to help manage pain, improve strength and muscle endurance, improve posture, and improve function. The office also provides post-surgical orthopedic rehabilitation to help patients reach their maximum rehabilitation potential. Karen specializes in


CRPS, coupled with a variety of modern modalities, including Myofascial Cupping and Dry Needling, Mirror therapy and manipulations including Myofascial Release, Manual traction, the Graston technique, Gentle passive joint mobilization and stretching. A large part of her practice includes performing Functional Capacity Evaluations for workman’s compensation patients, social security disability, and patients requiring a functional status following an accident and need life plans or a returnto-work status. ‘NO ONE COOKS LIKE MAMA!’ It all started in England in 1964 when Francis Salamone showed Antonino Cimino a photograph of a beautiful young woman, her sister, Domenica, who was living at the time in Sicily.


e instantly fell in love, and even though it was a time when most marriages were still arranged, he flew to Sicily and the families met for the first time. Domenica fell in love at once as well and on November 6th, 1966, they were married.

Soon after the newlyweds relocated to England, they gave birth to three children: Nicolo, Salvatore, and Vincenzo. In 1973 they moved to America, and Rockford, IL. became their new home where they gave birth to their fourth boy, Pietro. At the time, the brothers worked at a Rockford Factory called Gunnite. The Cimino brothers would frequently bring pizzas and other Italian dishes to work, and it wasn’t long before the other workers caught wind of how great their food was. They asked if he could start bringing in food for them. Before long, Domenica and her sister-in laws, Christine and Angela, were catering lunch to the workers and word traveled fast around the city. Vincenzo “Vince” opened the first Cimino’s Pizza in 1975, located in Loves Park, the ristorante was the first of many to come.

Francesco “Frank” Cimino moved to Pecatonica and Antonino “Tony” to Freeport. It was in 1977 that the first Cimino’s in Freeport opened. During this time, Antonino taught his boys what he believed to be the most important things about running a restaurant, perfecting the product and the service. Lessons that his sons say they will never forget to this day. In the tragic year of 1985, Antonino passed away. Nicolo “Nick”, Salvatore “Sal”, Vincenzo “Vince” and Pietro “Peter” promised to keep their father’s spirit alive. BRINGING THE SMOKE & FIRE Let’s talk good barbecue, shall we? And it all starts in the smoker.


moke & Fire, located near Eastern Ave in Henderson, is about to be your new favorite lunch or dinner spot. Boasting smoked meats and delectable combinations of flavors, dining in for a review here was an absolute gift to say the least. My partner in crime and I headed into the restaurant on a bustling Thursday afternoon with empty bellies and full appetites. We were greeted by the Owner of the restaurant, David Mangual, who is a renowned culinary expert with experience from incredible Strip restaurants including the Bellagio’s Osteria del Circo as well as the Mirage’s Chef de Partie. He is known for making the most interesting and delicious blends of sweet and savory. His newest food adventure has been opening his own restaurant with former NBA player investors, Alan Anderson and D’or Fischer, in April 2020, yes- during the midst of the pandemic. With great success ever since, they have slowly grown their menu to the stature it sits today with savory concoctions that will make you wish you got two plates of

food. The restaurant is filled with Vegas related things, and hours could be spent on their outdoor patio, set with a puttputt area and ping pong table. We started out with blueberries. First and foremost, their Blueberry Lemonade -which can have alcohol added if that’s what you’re into- was like summertime in a drink, refreshing and definitely something you’d want to sip on at the pool. We then tried one of their most raved about dishes, the World Famous Blueberry Chicken Sliders, which features buttermilk fried chicken sliders, pepper jack cheese, delicious housemade blueberry jam – that I would eat straight out of the jar – topped with a jalapeno on a sweet Hawaiian roll. Who would think that blueberries and chicken would be the perfect match? Well, I know I did and the balance of sweet and spicy was out of this world. They certainly brought the fire. Now, to the smoke. For the main course, they made sure we had a full profile of their heaviest kickers. The platter included their smoked St. Louis style ribs, crispy smoked chicken wings, pulled chicken

and pulled pork. The ribs were tender, smokey and slide-off-the-bone delicious and their homemade BBQ sauces really topped off each meat. The wings were crispy and full of flavor, and the pulled chicken and pulled pork had us both obsessed. Especially on the Hawaiian roll with some of their homemade mustard BBQ! And it wouldn’t be complete without their signature sides: seasoned up potato salad, coleslaw, double-cheesed mac n cheese, and their dreamy baked beans. It is very clear that time, energy, and taste tests were put into each dish to get them to perfection. They bring the smoke, and the food is fire!
