The year 2021 was challenging. COVID-19 restrictions continued and, even as vaccines became available, communities were faced with third and fourth waves of the pandemic.

Unmarked graves discovered on former Residential School sites and stories of people excluded from or hurt by the church because of their sexuality, culture or skin colour reminded us that while God is perfect, the church sometimes falls short of what it is called to be.

In times like these, it can be difficult to know the best ways to share the good news of Christ’s grace and reconciling love. And yet, even in these uncertain times—especially in uncertain and difficult times—God is at work. We’ve been rediscovering the importance of being together, even while physically apart. Through virtual

meals, online worship, porch visits and outdoor activities, we’ve shared in the love and healing presence of God. Programs have been adapted to ensure care is still being provided to the vulnerable.

And God is with us.

As we look forward to 2022, we do not know exactly what we will face or where we will most be needed, but we know that God goes with us, and so we will continue to minister together, with glad and generous hearts.

MINUTES OF THE ANNUAL CONGREGATIONAL MEETING OF 2020 Held on Sunday, January 24th, 2021 Opening: The Annual Congregational Meeting of 2020 for Trinity Presbyterian Church York Mills was held via video call on Sunday, January 24th, 2021.

Acknowledgement of the Chair: The Rev. Kirk T. Summers accepted the role of the Chair.

A hymn was played by Director of Music Michael Gomiega.

Opening devotions and a prayer was provided by the Chair.

Purpose of the Meeting: The Chair reviewed the purpose of the meeting.

Those who may vote: The Chair reviewed those who may vote.

Procedures for discussion and voting, with a voting test run: Executive Assistant to the Minister and Church Manager, Melvin Suwarno reviewed the Zoom procedures for discussion and voting.

Secretary: On a motion from Marlene Arifin, seconded by Mary Wilson, it was agreed that Linda Herron be appointed recording secretary for the meeting. Carried.

Section 1: Prior to her recommendation, Linda Herron offered condolences on behalf of the congregation to the Rev. Kirk T. Summers on the passing of his dear mother, Dorothyann, on January 20th.

Minutes: On a motion from Linda Herron, seconded by Mark Boucher, the minutes of the 2019 Annual Congregational Meeting were adopted as printed. Carried.

Motion to Adopt the Agenda: On a motion from Rania Moghabghab, seconded by Esther Rupnarain, the Agenda was adopted as printed. Carried.

Kirk Session Report: A motion to receive the Reports of the Kirk Session, Congregational Statistics, Ministry and Group Reports, with the exception of the 2019 Financial Statements and Envelope Secretary’s Report; and Report of the Trustees, was made by Rania Moghabghab, seconded by Tim Herron. Carried. The Chair expressed appreciation to all those who do the work and diligently report on it.

Section 2: On a motion by Susan Van Greuning, seconded by Teressa Weiler, the report of the Finance and Stewardship Ministry was received for information, with thanks. Carried.

Robin Campbell, Convener of the Finance and Stewardship Ministry, took the opportunity to say how proud he was of the Trinity congregation, which he felt had surpassed what could have been expected of the congregation this year during the pandemic. Robin expressed his thanks to the team of Kirk Summers, Michael Gomiega, and Melvin Suwarno along with the Ministry Team of Randal Phillips, Scott Worthington, Steve Roche, Beth Hemstad, and Mark Boucher. They, along with the conveners of the other ministries, helped greatly to develop the Financial Statements for 2020 and the budget for 2021.

On a motion by Scott Worthington, seconded by Robin Campbell, the Envelope Secretary’s report was adopted as printed. Carried.

On a motion by Randal Phillips, seconded by Mary Malcolm, the 2020 Financial Statements were received and considered. Carried.

Randal Phillips proceeded to review the highlights of the 2020 Financial Statements. Prior to that however, he thanked the congregation. During an extremely turbulent time in our lives and our church and all the challenges to deal with, we found our way through it together and one way was the tremendous support from the congregation. It was heartwarming to see the support of our congregation and it made an enormous difference in how we made out financially. The grace of God was also key in our managing, along with the support of the government.

Trinity ended the year very positively. Looking at the General Fund, our offerings were above what we budgeted and there were three reasons for that: We had the continuing support of our congregation; the entire Anniversary offering of $20,000 went to the General Fund; and the very generous gift from the McKay family, who decided that Trinity could use some planned giving funds now.

Our rentals were a different story though. Our rentals had been going up year after year, such that we had budgeted for $255,000 in rental income. Then, the pandemic hit, and our church had to close. As a result, we only took in $95,000 for the year. Government subsidies helped greatly with $115,776 amazingly received both through wage subsidies and rental subsidies. As a result of this, our total income was close to what we had budgeted for the year. This was through some very difficult decisions made by the Minister and the Human Resources Ministry. We now have only three full time employees. These steps were taken to reduce our expenses. We also reduced our donation to Presbyterians Sharing by half, after a vote by the congregation.

We ended the year with a slight surplus of $43,672. As a result, we did not have to take the $80,000 budgeted from the Growth Fund. We were able to avoid that and conserve the Fund. We also received a very good investment return on our Growth Fund.

On a motion by Randal Phillips, seconded by Susan Van Greuning, the Financial Statements as received for the year ending December 31st, 2020, were approved. Carried with thanks.

On a motion by Randal Phillips, seconded by Bob Bray, the 2021 Budget was received and considered. Carried.

Randal pointed out that many people were involved in preparing this Finance and Stewardship Ministry presentation. He offered thanks for Beth Hemstad (Envelope Secretary), Mark Boucher (Assistant Treasurer), and for the advice of Scott Worthington, Steve Roche, and Robin Campbell for all their forward-thinking conversations. The process started in September when all the various ministries were asked for their plans for 2021. The budget was then drafted for Session to review in October. After further adjustments, a revised budget was presented to Session in November for approval.

While no one has a crystal ball, 2021 is shaping up to be a difficult year. There is much uncertainty about the pandemic and the vaccination process. It is possible that we will not be back to a more normal situation until the end of the summer. These assumptions run though the budget. We are gratefully assuming that we will have good support from the congregation, but the rentals will still not meet the levels we hope for, and the government subsidies will be significantly lower than we received in 2020. We hope to keep expenses slightly below the 2020 levels for the various requirements. We are budgeting for a $80,000 deficit for 2021 and we would transfer that sum from our Growth Fund. We have run the numbers to ensure the Growth Fund is sustainable for the next 5 years based on estimated withdrawals and rates of return.

On a motion by Mark Boucher, seconded by Russ McKay, the sum of $18,654 will be included in the 2021 Budget as Trinity’s allocation to Presbyterians Sharing. Carried.

On a motion by Don Seal, seconded by John McCord, the 2021 Budget was approved. Carried.

Motion to Adopt the Trustee Report: On a motion by Tim Herron, seconded by Scott Worthington, the report of the Trustees was adopted as printed. Carried.

Appointment of the Trustees: On a motion by Teressa Weiler, seconded by Hiba Michael, Trustees Tim Herron and Mary Wilson were reappointed. Carried. The Chair expressed gratitude and appreciation to Russ, Tim, and Mary for their work as Trustees.

On a motion by Tim Herron, seconded by Beth Hemstad, Adeel Michael was appointed as a Trustee for the coming year. Tim thanked Russ for his outstanding service as a Trustee over the years. Tim also welcomed Adeel as a wonderful appointment as a new trustee to work with him and Mary. Carried.

Appointment of the Treasurer: On a motion from Robin Campbell, seconded by Russ McKay, Randal Phillips was appointed as Treasurer. Robin thanked Randal for his wonderful work as Trinity’s Treasurer. We are grateful for his extraordinary efforts during this very difficult time. The Chair also offered that the demands put on the Treasurer this year were unrelenting. It was so difficult to say goodbye to several beloved staff. The whole congregation offers sincere thanks for a remarkable job in remarkable times. Carried with thanks.

Appointment of the Envelope Secretary: On a motion from Scott Worthington, seconded by Cinda Chua, Beth Hemstad was reappointed as Envelope Secretary. Scott said that he looked back at the 2010 Annual Report and noted that there was appreciation given to Beth upon her succeeding Elizabeth Beaton as Envelope Secretary.

Beth has continued to do an amazing job every week for the past ten years, and even before that, she worked on the Board of Managers. The Chair added that Beth is a remarkable servant of the Lord and thanked Beth for her constant hard work. Carried with thanks.

Section 3: Words from the Minister: The Chair acknowledged again the amazing Annual Report that had been prepared

by Melvin Suwarno, with the help of all the contributors.

The Chair then shared four Bible readings, some of which he has read in a different light since the recent death of his mother.

At 1 Timothy 6:12, “Fight the good fight of the faith; take hold of the eternal life, to which you were called and for which you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses”.

Then, at 2 Timothy 1:13, “Hold to the standard of sound teaching that you have heard from me; in the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus”. I think about my mom and who she wanted me to be, and who we at Trinity are and want to be.

From today’s Ministry Moment, “Yes Please Steward This”, which was dedicated to my mother, it was also to be dedicated to Trinity. 2 Timothy 1:14, “Guard the good treasure entrusted to you, with the help of the Holy Spirit living in us”.

And at 1 Peter 4:8-11, “Above all, maintain constant love for one another, for love covers a multitude of sins. Be hospitable to one another without complaining. Like good stewards of the manifold grace of God, serve one another with whatever gift each of you has received. Whoever speaks must do so as one speaking the very words of God; whoever serves must do so with the strength that God supplies, so that God may be glorified in all things through Jesus Christ. To Him belong the glory and power forever and ever”.

It is not easy in a pandemic, but we have done it and will continue to do it. The Chair has been astounded by the giftedness of the members of Trinity. He, as one with Melvin, Michael, and Maria, offer this: “God Bless Your Church with Strength”. Above all things, maintain constant love for one another. Stewardship is the grateful giving of time, talent, energy, and resources. To Barb and Russ McKay, thank you for the leadership you have provided. You gave Trinity a great year. Your gifts to Trinity came at a remarkable time.

It has been such a privilege to reflect on the life and times of Trinity in the year 2020 and to offer, as a representative of everyone at Trinity Presbyterian Church York Mills, our sincere gratitude to all that made this 8 2021 Annual Report

year a success. In preparing for today, I was guided to the letter of Paul to the Colossians 3, which reminds us of God’s love and the virtues we should live by. Paul continues to remind us that God sends peace to guide us in decisions we make. God calls us together in one body. To be thankful. To sing songs. To give thanks.

Giving thanks for the tangible and the intangible that we receive helps us connect to something larger than ourselves. It fosters positive feelings which contribute to one’s well-being. As we count our blessings today, we are strengthening Trinity’s well-being as we turn the page on the calendar and venture into the future of 2021.

We acknowledge and recognize those who have made huge sacrifices so Trinity could have a very purposeful year.

There has been a mantra that emerged this year: “It’s OK to be not OK”. I understand the underlying message, that this year has been filled with disruptions to our usual ways. Yet, Trinity rose to those disruptions and said – let’s do better.

We are here today to thank those who said, “let’s do better”.

In closing, I would like to share one of Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.’s quotes. “We must accept finite disappointment, but we must never lose infinite Hope”. I have infinite hope for Trinity’s future and the deepest gratitude to all that contributed to the successful purpose of Trinity during 2020. May God’s love and peace guide you in the coming year.

Minister’s Letter Dear People of Trinity, “The Church is Jesus Christ together with His people called both to worship and to serve him in all of life”. Living Faith: 7.1.1

The reading below from 1 Corinthians Chapter One, is a reading that always, and especially during this awful pandemic, makes me think of us. It is essentially a letter from a minister to a congregation, Paul to Corinthians. It is a reading that tells of the diligence and care of a Christcentered community of faith no matter what, and of how wonderful that is! It also is a reading that tells of God’s steadfast love and faithfulness no matter what, and of how wonderful that is too!

“1 Paul, called to be an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and our brother Sosthenes, 2 To the church of God that is in Corinth, to those who are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, together with all those who in every place call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, both their Lord and ours: 3 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 4 I give thanks to my God always for you because of the grace of God that has been given you in Christ Jesus, 5 for in every way you have been enriched in him, in speech and knowledge of every kind— 6 just as the testimony of Christ has been strengthened among you— 7 so that you are not lacking in any spiritual gift as you wait for the revealing of our Lord Jesus Christ. 8 He will also strengthen you to the end, so that you may be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 God is faithful; by him you were called into the fellowship of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.”

In-person and virtually, together and apart, with a caring spirit, we have shared 2021 not knowing so much of the time what would and could happen, when, and how. Regardless, we have shared this turbulent and troublesome, yet creative and compassionate year. Faithfully, lovingly, generously, hopefully, we shared it – all of it – with God and each other. Faithfully, lovingly, generously, hopefully, we shared it – for God and for each other. What a year! Thanks be to you and to God for all your sharing and caring no matter what!

Part 2: Kirk Session and Ministry Reports Kirk Session

Here we are at the end of another ‘Pandemic’ year. Such a strange time in the life of the church and our Kirk Session. Fortunately, we were able to safely reopen to in person worship on July 11th, 2021, after closing our doors for worship on November 22nd, 2020, following ten Sundays back in our Sanctuary. Our Session has closely followed the public health requirements and, of course, the recommendations of the COVID-19 Response Task Force over the past year.

The year began with our Annual Congregational Meeting on January 24th, 2021. It was held by Zoom and went very well for a first-time technical endeavour. We must thank our Minister Kirk T. Summers and Melvin Suwarno, Church Manager, and Executive Assistant to the Minister, for the tremendous effort put into making the meeting proceed so smoothly.

During the year Session continued its work virtually rather than in person. We held our monthly meetings over Zoom and were able to see each other and share the agenda, documents, and financial presentations as we met. These meetings were a great way for the work of Session and its Ministries to continue, and yet we all look forward to being able to meet again in person some time in 2022.

The COVID-19 Response Task Force, a Session committee lead by Diane Wells, who took over when Linda Herron was appointed Clerk in June 2021 upon the retirement of Randal Philips, continued to keep Session well informed following their monthly meetings. This helped Session stay on top of the latest and ever-changing government health and safety regulations during the year. It was a recommendation of the Task Force that Trinity could safely return to in person worship on July 11th, 2021. After due consideration it was determined that the protocols put in place when we resumed worship in September 2020 were still viable and with great thanksgiving, we reopened for in person worship.

2021 looked to be a challenging year financially for the church. Our tenant rental income continued to be greatly reduced and Session monitored the situation closely all year. Fortunately, through the diligent work of our Treasurer Randal Phillips, continued government subsidies put in place for COVID-19 assistance, some new rental opportunities, and the very generous support of our members we managed to end the year on good financial footing.

The amazing virtual communication with the congregation that began in 2020 continued throughout 2021. Ministry Moment, produced by our Minister, and his team of Michael Gomiega, Director of Music, and Melvin, continued to keep us connected and feeling God’s love with reflections, Bible verses and wonderful music from Michael and the choir and sometimes, even the Trinity House Band.

The final Ministry Moment, Episode 107! was released on July 4th. It was a wonderful look back on this virtual ministry that was born from necessity, with ingenuity and love on March 18th, 2020. It was so popular with the congregation that it was felt there needed to be something to continue the

legacy and thus a shortened version; Good Sunday Morning! arrived in our email beginning on Sunday, July 11th, 2021, at 6:00 a.m. By year’s end there will be 27 episodes created by Kirk, Michael, and Melvin to help keep us connected with a short reflection and lovely music along with the choir on occasion. It’s a wonderful devotional to begin your day and your week. The library of Ministry Moment and Good Sunday Morning! Episodes can be found on the Trinity website. To compliment these video offerings, Trinity News continues to keep the congregation informed, reflective and entertained each Friday afternoon.

Our new Elders: Marlene Arifin, John Clarke, Rania Moghabghab, Don Seal and Susan Van Greuning, were selected just before the first lock down in March 2020. We held a virtual induction service for them on March 29th, 2020 and invited them to join our Session meetings as guests. On October 17th, 2021, we were pleased to be able to complete their induction with the congregation present during worship. It was a moving service to finally, formally, induct these willing and able servants of the Lord. During the summer we also reorganized the Elder Districts into four districts to help facilitate personal contact with our members. Through phone calls, emails, cards, and the occasional in person visit Elders help keep the congregation connected and learn of any individual needs of our members.

The Pastoral Care Team, led by Joan Kitchen, has complemented these efforts for those in need of special care and attention.

It was with deep gratitude that Session received a notice of retirement from Barbara McKay as the congregation’s long and faithful serving archivist. Barbara’s remarkable collection in so many forms of Trinity’s life, work, and witness is a gift to us now and to generations yet to come. Together with Barbara, the Session was pleased that Rania Moghabghab accepted the invitation to serve as our new archivist.

Our Church School, after a summer of online activities, resumed virtually in the fall lead by Liz Albrecht-Bisset and Kirk Summers with Zoom to Church School on Wednesdays! Each child received an activity kit with materials needed for crafts as well as an age-appropriate Spark Bible. They gather online each week and after a short Bible-based video there is time for a chat, songs, and activities.

Great plans are also in the works for when in person Church School can resume.

Also, this Fall, we received four new members into our Trinity family. Diane McKenzie, Sandy Allder, Bill Herridge and Teressa Weiler were received on Sunday November 21st, 2021. Please welcome them when you have an opportunity. It is so wonderful for Trinity to continue to grow and share the good news.

Throughout this challenging year, Trinity continued to show its generous heart. Donations have been made to St. Stephen’s Food Bank, the Arise Ministry, the Winnipeg Inner City Mission, and several other organizations. As for our Annual Christmas Project, we again raised money for the Francisco Coll School in Guatemala to help send disadvantaged children to school.

The enduring witness and faithful, creative work of the late Colin Campbell, continued to be realized through his congregational history text, From There to Here, as more people learned of the deep roots Trinity possesses and upon which its present life is grounded in Christ.

Our ministries have been hard at work this year as they have been able to keep their mandates moving ahead, even in these difficult times. Their reports are included on the following pages and tell the story of our life and work at Trinity.

COVID-19 Response Task Force For the first five months of 2021, the people of Ontario continued to be in a province-wide lockdown. Eventually, restrictions were lifted, and in-person worship was once again permitted as of June 11th, 2021. The Task Force met and decided that we, at Trinity, would resume services on July 11th, 2021. As there was a 25% capacity limit (100 people), we felt there was no need for pre-registration but, all the earlier protocols from our first return to in-person worship would remain in place, which include: • • • • • •

Wear a mask, Enter through the Arcade Doors, Sanitize hands, Give your name and phone number at the registration desk, Enter the Sanctuary through the side door in the Doig Hallway, and; Sit six feet (two meters) apart.

Additional safety measures implemented: • • •

Plexiglass dividers were put on the chancel to separate the Minister, Choir, and Band Members.

The length of worship services was reduced to 45 minutes.

All the Sanctuary doors were left open for good ventilation.

During the summer and most of the fall, we were able to enjoy fellowship with pre-packaged refreshments on the front patio after worship. In November, the Task Force decided that if we remained masked and had no refreshments, we could gather in the North Hall to chat after the service, though we soon discovered that most people preferred to remain in the Sanctuary to socialize after worship.

Melvin ensured that all of our tenants were once again apprised of our protocols.

As Christmas approached, the COVID-19 cases started to drastically rise due to the Omicron variant. The Task Force discussed the situation and decided that because of the size of our Sanctuary, which has excellent ventilation, we could safely continue to have in-person services, including Christmas Eve worship. Out of an abundance of caution, however, we decided to mark the seats in the Sanctuary with tape to ensure six feet of distancing.

Throughout the new year, the Task Force will continue to monitor the COVID-19 situation carefully, week by week, and apprise the congregation promptly of any changes.

Congregational Life Ministry “Feed my lambs … Take care of my sheep” John 21:15b, 16b 2021 continued to be a challenge for our Trinity family. It’s difficult to offer the type of Congregational Life events everyone has come to enjoy when we cannot physically gather at table, however, that did not stop us totally from having some fun and connecting!

We began the year with a wonderful Robbie Burns Night Virtual Celebration on January 30th. The Burns Supper is always a favourite event at Trinity, and we didn’t want to miss out on it totally. We began the event with a half hour of conversation. It was delightful to catch up with folks. Then we had wonderful music played by Michael in the Sanctuary and all the Zoom guests sang along. As a special treat Peggy Mitchell and James Waddell both shared a Burns reading from across the pond in Scotland! The choir also treated everyone to a few Scottish pieces. The evening ended with the traditional Auld Lang Syne.

Sadly, we were unable to hold our annual Curling Night at Thornhill Golf and Country Club nor enjoy our many other times we would normally gather at table. We did have a fun night of Bingo on May 1st to usher in our Trinity Anniversary weekend. It was virtual bingo, and many played along and were excited to call “Bingo!” when they won a round.

It was wonderful to be able to worship together in-person starting in July 2021 even though we were unable to gather socially. Calls, cards, emails, and a few socially distanced visits still happened to help everyone feel connected. We also had some virtual teas organized by Joan Kitchen, which were well received.

We look forward to planning other events in the new year and hopefully we will be able to physically meet again for the many events and celebrations that help make our church home full of fun and fellowship.

Women of Purpose The Women of Purpose Group kept in touch with each other by phone during Winter 2021. From October to December, meetings were held in a member’s house, with six to eight members present at each. A special luncheon was organized in the December meeting, which we all enjoyed.

As always, the ladies have been faithful in sending their offerings to our Treasurer, Mary Malcolm.

Internationally, we sent a total of $1,045 to PWS&D for Afghanistan & Lebanon. In Canada, the charities we supported were Evangel Hall and Arise Ministry for a total contribution of $950.

The total amount of giving this year is $1,995. I wish to thank the ladies for their support of Women of Purpose.

Pastoral Care “Kind words are like honey-sweet to the taste and good for your health” Proverbs 16:24 The Trinity Presbyterian Church community is brought together by our faith in all stages of life. The Pastoral Care Team aims to support members and friends during times of illness, grief, or change in order to provide nourishment and strength to fortify those in need to endure their pains, heal their wounds, and continue on with life.

The Pastoral Care Team reached out to those in need through phone calls, flowers, cards, and face to face visits when COVID-19 protocols allowed.

Trinity Social Teas continued throughout the year using Zoom meetings to bring people together. Melvin and Michael shared their musical talents at all of the Teas.

1. Love is in the Air – Thursday, March 4th, 2021. This was an afternoon of sing along to love songs.

Inspirational readings and words of God’s love completed the event.

2. Blooming – Thursday, May 6th, 2021. We discussed ways we are keeping our spirits blooming. Three of Trinity’s healthcare providers shared their experiences and changes they are seeing during the COVID19 pandemic. They shared how they find peace in their daily lives.

3. Packed with Love – Thursday, September 30th, 2021. We shared prayers of healing on this National Day of Truth and Reconciliation as Maggie Albrecht-Bisset shared her knowledge of this time in Canada’s history. Our other guest, Christine Beek, spoke of the Food Sharing Programme at St. Stephen’s Presbyterian Church.

In June, we hosted a Garden Party to honour and thank Terry Kelly for her many contributions to Trinity and the Pastoral Care Team. We miss her calm and caring presence at all Trinity events.

Prayer Chain: Silently Serving The Trinity Prayer Chain has continued to be actively involved in the life of Trinity Church again, throughout this very challenging 2021. Our team received 85 prayer requests during the year. Many of those who have requested prayers have expressed their gratitude for the support they felt knowing that Trinity was remembering them in prayer daily.

It is a privilege for me to serve as Coordinator and to be associated with the 20 dedicated members, who pray faithfully for the crises and other requests that come their way. The Prayer Team responds to emails, phone calls, and personal requests from Trinity members, adherents, and those beyond our immediate community.

Anyone can ask for supportive prayer anytime and experience its comfort. Our team can uplift their life, their families, friends, and all those who need hope and healing through prayer.

Connections Ministry “So we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually we are members one of another.”

Romans 12:5 The Connections Ministry was created to support church growth by inviting our community to visit Trinity, welcoming and nurturing those who do, getting our members and adherents involved in the life and work of our church, and connecting with those who have drifted away, to invite them back.

This has been a second difficult year for our Ministry because of the lockdowns, and restrictions on gathering even when we are open. Our major activity this year was a series of virtual English Conversational Classes. Peggy Hume led this initiative very successfully, and we are very grateful for her contribution in helping Trinity to help others.

We will be restarting other activities once we can reopen more fully.

Education Ministry “Great are the works of the Lord, studied by all who delight in them.”

Psalm 111:2 The Education Ministry provides education programs for children, youth, and adults of every age which encourage and equip growth in faith, participation in Christian community, and active witness to Christ in our world.

2021 was a year of great challenge and sadness in the world of education as opportunities to be together to “grow in grace and knowledge” (2 Peter 3:18) were dramatically thwarted and dampened by the pandemic, not only within church life but in society at large. All involved in student teaching and learning in 2021 are commended for their resolve, creativity, determination, flexibility, and cooperation.

Church School: Church School was a mere fraction of what it once was and what we hope it soon will be again.

It got up and running in an interactive form in October when Liz Albrecht-Bisset and Kirk Summers commenced a Wednesday evening Zoom to Church School!, held from 6:30 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. each week. Solid virtual attendance between four to seven children was recorded throughout. The Session approved SPARK curriculum was adapted and used along with the specialized Whirl Kids program from Sparkhouse. Whirl Kids features a short Bible-based video each week, followed by time to chat, crafts, activities, songs, stories, and more. A craft was conducted at each class. Often a photo of a participant’s craft was shown within Trinity News on Friday. A craft bag full of supplies was prepared and delivered to each student in advance.

Prior to the above coming to life, Liz continued, as she had in the pandemic laden months of 2020, to reach out to our church school community in a virtual way by posting in each Trinity News on Friday extensive educational resources, inclusive of activities and links based on a variety of themed based sources, most often the Minister’s message within Ministry Moment and then Good Sunday Morning!, and eventually actual in person worship.

Participants were invited to join the class at a time of their choice – either Sunday or during the week.

Instructions on how to do so and the classes themselves were accessible through Trinity News and the church website at mytrinity.ca. Again, throughout the season of Advent Liz presented the Advent Classroom resource prepared by Dr. Tori Smit, the Regional Minister for Faith Formation for the Synod of Central, Northeastern Ontario and Bermuda (CNOB) of The Presbyterian Church in Canada. Trinity was delighted to note the involvement of Robert Bisset singing “Mary, did you know?” in one of the Advent segments.

Youth and Young Adult Ministries continued in the care of Michael Gomiega, serving as Trinity’s Coordinator of Youth and Young Adult Ministries: Michael reports: At the beginning of the year, we tackled the difficult topic of mental health. Listening and sharing our thoughts and concerns proved to be a significant time for all of us. It was an emotional subject to start but the outcome was well worth it.

Our meetings continued to be by Zoom but that didn’t prevent us from enjoying virtual board games and dinners. One of the highlights was our Youth Conversation Series where the guest speakers were our very own band members; George Szep, Robbie Macatangay, Robert Bisset, Monica Soriano and Luck Rasoanilana. We got 2021 Annual Report 23

to know them all a little better with an in-depth look into their personal lives, skills, and professions. They are a unique group of people; realtor, culinary expert, musician, financial analyst, and paramedic, and each one spoke beautifully.

I would like to thank Maggie Albrecht-Bisset for passionately sharing her knowledge of the Winnipeg Inner City Mission. Maggie is an inspiration to all of us as she continues to use her voice to find justice for the indigenous peoples of Canada.

We were cautiously optimistic and grateful when COVID-19 restrictions lifted in June, and we were able to get together once again for our weekly badminton games. We were also thrilled to be able to hold our very first Youth Picnic at Morningside Park. Then in October, on a cool autumn day, we enjoyed apple picking at Carl Laidlaw Orchards. That excursion also included a corn maze, salmon run, pumpkin patch, sunflower fields, and apple cider. What a great day!

The opportunity to once again gather at Trinity to decorate for advent was a wonderful evening for all of us.

That, along with the advent and Christmas services, where Dakota read the Call to Worship and lit the advent candles, reminded us that even when we are walking through the darkness of a pandemic, there is a Light to overcome it.

Our journey through 2021 had us all looking for different ways to connect with each other. Amidst the everchanging restrictions and protocols, I thank God for our good health and for his protection. We continue to pray and remain hopeful that this pandemic will end soon.

Cheers to all of the Trinity Youth and Young Adults! Your presence continues to make Trinity an extra special church. Your faithful commitment, and just being who you are, are making a great impact.

Cairn says of its ministry: Living within an inclusive, accepting Christian community provides campers the feeling of safety and support that allows them to try something new, express their opinions, and learn from each other. YOUTH & YOUNG ADULT Learn and explore together

Missions Ministry “Whatever you did for one of the least of these … You did for me.”

Matthew 25:40 Despite the ongoing disruption of Church and family life, as a result of Trinity members' continuing generosity towards our various Mission Outreach Programs, we have been able to continue to support those programs throughout 2021 in a purposeful way.

Toronto City Mission The Ministry continued to support the efforts of TCM, and their various programs directed for single mothers and children of low-income families.

Although TCM was not able to carry out their Summer Camp Program this year, their administrative expenses continued, as did most of their other outreach programs. We provided $1,500 to TCM to support their efforts.

OASIS Addiction Recovery The Ministry continues to believe strongly in the ongoing efforts of OASIS to assist those recovering from alcohol and drug addiction in the Toronto area. OASIS continues to be one of the most successful organizations in not only rehabilitating individuals, but also in finding them future employment. We provided $1,000 to OASIS this year in support of their outstanding work.

St. Stephen’s Food Bank Trinity has continued to support the ongoing food bank operations of St. Stephen's Presbyterian Church located at Lawrence Avenue East and Markham Road in Scarborough. Although we were not able to continue with our Easter food drive because of the impact of COVID-19, we sent $1,000 to St. Stephen’s Food Bank. We also undertook a successful Thanksgiving food drive and raised an additional $4,500 towards St. Stephen's ongoing needs. The number of families supported has increased to more than 70 families, and St. Stephen's is deeply appreciative of Trinity's support.

Kids to Camp As a result of the ongoing COVID-19 restrictions, Cairn Camp substituted a family camp program for their regular summer camp operations with a view on supporting more than just the campers during this difficult time. We contributed a total of $3,500 to the Cairn Camp program to assist them in their continuing operations.

The Arise Ministry Members of the ministry felt that this program required our ongoing support in 2021 given all of the issues that so many young women are forced to deal with on the streets in Toronto. We provided the sum of $1,000 to the Arise Outreach Mission this year on behalf of the congregation.

Exousia Media Group Unfortunately, Exousia Media Group was unable to continue its in-person programs involving the Toronto District School Board throughout 2021. Their operations were substantially restricted given the ongoing impact of COVID-19.

With the rising mental health issues from the pandemic plus their impact on Toronto's Black Community, we expect to support Exousia in 2022 to sustain their mission and commitment to Toronto youth in crisis.

The Peace Tree Due to the ongoing leadership of Joan Kitchen, Trinity once again supported this Christmas Outreach Program and many members contributed through monetary donations and physical Christmas gifts to this valuable cause. To support these three important Presbyterian Church programs, we have additionally forwarded a cheque in the amount of $1,000 to each of Evangel Hall, Fernie House, and Armagh House.

Congregational Christmas Project Having reviewed and discussed several potential projects to support for 2021, we decided the needs of the Francisco Coll Primary School in Guatemala City was an important charity requiring Trinity's support.

The families of the children attending the school make their living going through the largest landfill in Central America. Our support continues to have an important impact on the lives of the 225 students there as education is a significant opportunity to escape poverty that surrounds them. We have successfully raised and donated $16,328.63 to Francisco Coll School.

Ministry Update The year 2021 began much the same as the year 2020 ended, with COVID-19 keeping us all safely worshipping at home. Ministry Moment on Wednesdays and Sundays, along with Trinity News on Fridays continued to keep us connected to each other, the church, and most especially to our Lord, for six months. For a second year we celebrated communion, Holy Week, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Trinity’s Anniversary, and Canada Day, virtually.

Then, after several weeks of fewer and fewer COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations, our COVID-19 Response Task Force recommended we reopen for in-person worship on July 11th. What glorious news! In keeping with Toronto Health Guidelines, we shortened our service to 45 minutes and had fellowship on the front patio instead of in the North Hall. No one seemed to mind! It was just wonderful to be worshipping together again. As we returned to in-person worship, Ministry Moment ended, having recorded 107 episodes. In September the congregation showed its appreciation to our minister, the Rev. Kirk T. Summers, our Church Manager, Melvin Suwarno and our Director of Music, Michael Gomiega for these wonderful presentations that had comforted us, inspired us, taught us, and made us laugh during a very difficult time. As soon as Ministry Moment ended, Good Sunday Morning!, a short video time of scripture, reflection, and music was recorded for those people who did not wish to return to in-person worship just yet. The first episode of Good Sunday Morning! came out on July 11th, and it continues to come to us by email every Sunday morning at 6:00 a.m.

Celebrating the Closing of Ministry Moment What are some of your favourite Moments?

TRINITY CHOIR & BAND Zoom rehearsals and in-person practices!

After a few months of ‘Simple Summer’ and then ‘Simple Fall’ Worship, the Worship Ministry decided to add a second short service on Sunday mornings at 9:30 a.m. This would be a time of story and praise for all ages with Kirk, Michael and members of the choir and band. Thus, the Glorious Gospel Half Hour was born. For eight weeks, starting on Thanksgiving Sunday, October 10th, a small but very appreciative group of people enjoyed 30 minutes of Songs and Stories to Stir Your Soul. Glorious Gospel Half Hour will return on the last Sunday of every month with the band, starting January 30th, 2022.

It was with immense thanksgiving and admiration that Trinity was gifted with the 34th Annual Christmas Pageant in the care of Mark and Karen Boucher, who have provided leadership in this wonderful event for 24 consecutive years. Because of the constant uncertainty of the pandemic, and the time required for preparation, it seemed prudent to once again have a virtual Children’s Christmas Pageant in 2021. Mark and Karen started planning the pageant in the summer and came up with the wonderful idea of using last year’s recording as a base and asking those who were not available for that recording, to be the narrators. As well, they invited former participants, now all grown up, to also participate. Some of those people are parents themselves now, with their own children in the pageant. The pageant was virtually presented to the congregation, and to the world, within Good Sunday Morning! on December 10th. Thank you so much to Mark, Karen and family for another wonderful presentation.

Once more ‘God’s Plan’ and ‘God’s Good News’ touched the lives of all who participated in, and watched, this faithful work of the late Dorothy Hunter.

The choir, under the leadership of our Director of Music, Michael Gomiega, began rehearsing for the cantata, Invitation to a Miracle in October. As the cantata was also being presented virtually, Michael set it up so that we could either come to the church for an in-person rehearsal or rehearse at home by Zoom. This seemed to work really well, and almost everyone had all six recordings submitted to Michael by December 8th.

Michael’s editing expertise was once again in evidence when the final recording went out on December 19th. It was truly a beautiful way to experience the miracle of Christmas. As well as the pageant and cantata coming to us by email, they were also shown on a screen in Founder’s Hall, both before and after the 10:30 a.m. service of worship that same day. It was a lovely way for family and friends to enjoy these two presentations together.

As mentioned previously, in-person choir practice resumed in October but due to distancing requirements, only a few members could sing each Sunday. Our sincere appreciation goes out to John McCord and Wings Lem for being at every Wednesday practice, and of course, every Sunday morning service, to enhance our sound by setting-up our microphones and monitoring the audio system.

We did not have many opportunities for floral arrangements this past year, but I would like to acknowledge the lovely Thanksgiving decorations by Elizabeth Wu and the beautiful poinsettia display by our Director of Music, Michael Gomiega. Both were exceptional!

A special thank-you to our greeters this past year. In spite of all the COVID-19 restrictions and protocols, they did, and continue to do, a wonderful job of looking after our congregation; making sure people are registered when they arrive, seated and distanced in the correct pews, safely ushered out after the service, and generally 32 2021 Annual Report

very well cared for. Thank you so very much to Jeanne Maitland, Peggy Hume, Mark Boucher, and all of our Sunday morning greeters who have made our return to in-person worship flow so seamlessly.

There was not much opportunity for others to participate in our services this past year but for all of you who did give an announcement, read scripture, play an instrument, sing, or address the congregation for a purpose, thank you!

Also, special appreciation is extended to the Rev. Kirk T. Summers, Melvin Suwarno and Michael Gomiega for all that they have done these past two years to keep us connected to each other and to God’s love; Ministry Moment, Trinity News, Good Sunday Morning! and in-person worship, not to mention the hundreds of texts, emails, phone calls and, when possible, visits.

Director of Music As I look back on 2021, yet another challenging year, I feel that every piece of music recorded or played, struck a chord in our hearts. The music was dynamic, artistic, full of life and hopefully, a source of healing, and comfort.

At its very base, this is what music should be all about: to inspire us, to stir our hearts, and to move our hands, and perhaps even our whole bodies, in praise, and proclamation.

The year before, in 2020, we had remarkable success when we launched our first virtual format with Zoom rehearsals and meetings. Just a year into the pandemic and all of our skills were challenged in a way that we could never have imagined. It was a unique time, coping with new technology and learning new skills. Now, here we are two years into the pandemic and how very proud I am of our achievements. God has been so faithful!

This past year continued to be an incredible journey. As well as Sunday worship with Ministry Moment, we virtually celebrated Robbie Burns Day, Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, Easter Sunday, Mother’s Day, and Father’s Day. Even though we returned to in-person worship in July, we also virtually presented our lovely Fall Tea, wonderful Children’s Christmas Pageant and the breathtaking Christmas Cantata.

For several weeks in the fall, at 9:30 a.m., we had a second worship service entitled The Glorious Gospel Half Hour. In 2022 this 30-minute time of ‘praise and story to stir the soul’ will return on the last Sunday of each month with the band.

We are a living music ministry with our presentations reaching far beyond Bayview Avenue and Highway 401. I am humbled by the kind words expressed by other churches, including: St. Mark’s United Church, Scarborough; 2021 Annual Report 33

Scarborough Bluffs United Church; Congregational United Church of Christ, Humboldt, Iowa; First Moravian Church of Greensboro, North Carolina; and First United Methodist Church of Lafayette, Colorado.

Also, I was blown away one day, when I received an email from the well-known composer, Mr. Don Besig who expressed his warm appreciation for our choir’s recording of his song, “Flying Free”.

My sincere thanks to the choir, band, and our many guests for their dedication, patience, and commitment. And thank you Trinity! Your emails, notes and cards filled with messages of support and appreciation have been my source of strength. They have given me direction, inspiration, and the vision to continue to join our hearts, minds, and spirits through music.

Operations Ministry The Operations ministry has two primary divisions: Human Resources and Facilities and Grounds.

Human Resources “…To equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ.” Ephesians 4:121 Mandate and Membership This Ministry is responsible for employment matters of all church staff and, as directed by the Presbytery of East Toronto, for the Minister, to act as a liaison to the Minister as Head of Staff, and the recommendation of candidates to serve the Church in volunteer capacities. It is also responsible for ensuring the well-being and equipping of people who serve the Church in volunteer capacities and for compliance and adherence to the Leading with Care policy of the Presbyterian Church in Canada The Ministry members in 2021 were: Terrie-Lee Hamilton, Rania Moghabghab and James Waddell. The Rev. Kirk T. Summers, as Minister, attended all meetings.

The Minister Given that the position of Minister reports to the Presbytery of East Toronto, the Minister is not a member of the Trinity staff. The Minister does, however, report due diligence on their six distinct responsibilities at all Human Resources Ministry and Session meetings: • • • • • •

Minister of Word and Sacrament Moderator of Session Teaching Elder Pastor Executive of Presbytery Head of Staff

Staff Complement We are indebted to our diligent, dedicated staff who have shown great versatility, flexibility, and cooperation in these difficult times. They have continued to provide excellent service, support, and solutions, servicing the congregation, our tenants, our space users, and our community at large.

As reported last year, our staff complement, so significantly enhanced in 2019 with the addition of our Coordinator of Youth and Young Adult Ministries and the Coordinator of Children and Families Ministries, was decimated in 2020 because of COVID-19.

We began 2021 with a staff of three at work: • • •

Michael Gomiega, Director of Music and Coordinator: Youth and Young Adult Ministries (full time) Maria Rocha, Cleaner (11-15 hours per week) Melvin Suwarno, Executive Assistant to the Minister and Church Manager (full time)

We began 2021 as we ended 2020 with our Custodian, Juan Arellano, on emergency COVID-19 leave.

Unfortunately, as the year unfolded, we remained unable to support the custodian role. Healthy communication with Juan continued throughout. In the Fall, Juan indicated his desire to retire from Trinity. On November 24th, in worship, Trinity recognised and thanked Juan for his tremendous contribution toward the well being and maintenance of its church home. Juan’s legacy of excellent care, from 2015 to 2021, will endure for many years.

On account of the growing demands on the workload of the Executive Assistant to the Minister and Church Manager, especially as the Human Resources Ministry positioned the staff and congregation to welcome back an increased number of tenants and space users, inclusive of weddings, we welcomed, on October 4th, Bonnie Chan to the part time, two-day a week, contractual position of Operations and Administration Associate.

Church Office Volunteers The realities of the pandemic continued to thwart a multitude of volunteer service contributions at Trinity. The Human Resources Ministry remains grateful for and encouraged by the willingness to serve expressed by many people, and the desire to be ‘back at it’ when the time is right to do so. Mark and Beth Boucher were able to be present at the church most Wednesdays in 2021 to especially ensure all fire safety protocols were met and maintained. Also, Mark contributes weekly at the church to the integrity of operations in many other dimensions. The congregation expresses its deep thanks to him for his faithful ministry.

Leading with Care Human Resources is entrusted with the implementation and compliance of the Presbyterian Church in Canada’s Leading with Care policy, which is designed especially to ensure a climate of safety for children, youth, and vulnerable adults. We report diligence with respect to ensuring compliance with the policy, especially in relation to incident reporting, police checks, proof of insurance, fire prevention/evacuation awareness and response, and volunteer, staff and space-users education, training, and awareness.

Facilities and Grounds “They acquired property there and were fruitful and increased greatly in number."

Genesis 47:27 Mandate and Membership With the support of the Church Manager, the Operations Ministry is responsible for the maintenance and enhancement of all church property, including all facilities and grounds, and for maximizing the rental revenue from the property at times when Trinity does not require it. Members of the Ministry are: Bill Herridge, Cathy Lemieux, Stephen Kitchen, Terrie-Lee Hamilton, Rania Moghabghab and James Waddell (Convener). Melvin Suwarno (Church Manager) and the Rev. Kirk T. Summers (Minister) attended all meetings.

Church Manager Trinity is indebted to Melvin Suwarno, Church Manager, for his outstanding care of our church home, when we were there and when we were not. Melvin oversaw a multitude of tasks, including attending to the care of all the equipment, utilities, space users, service contracts, insurance status and service provider relationships.

Even though empty, the facilities and grounds still needed consistent attention and support. Extended periods of minimal use imposed particular demands in relation to security, heating, venting and air conditioning, and pest control.

The prolonged dramatic drop and decline in rental income, combined with the COVID-19 protocols, continued to demand exceptional diligence and care to ensure compliance, safety, and efficient operations in all aspects of facilities and grounds management.

It is important to note that Michael Gomiega, Director of Music and Coordinator of Youth and Young Adult Ministries, continued in 2021 to provide help to our Church Manager and Cleaner whenever, and wherever he could, especially in the areas of: building security, garbage and recycling, plant care, crop harvesting, and general maintenance.

Melvin's initiative and leadership in both streamlining and modernising Trinity’s technologies and infrastructure, which are so vital for our extensive virtual programming, continued throughout 2021. In addition, 2021 saw significant enhancement in the development of our IT strategies to reduce our exposure to ever-present and malicious cyber risks.

Tenants and Other Space Users Regulatory restrictions and requirements once again impacted the use of the facility by both our one-time and recurring space users. Trinity is very grateful for the financial support, to the best of their ability, of our tenants 38 2021 Annual Report

throughout the pandemic. The Montessori School and the three worshipping congregations have been a mainstay throughout the year, making payments despite many variations in their own income stream.

Additional rental income was generated from other recurring users when regulations permitted, and from onetime users, including eight weddings conducted in the sanctuary and live streamed to families and friends around the world.

Trusted Vendors/Excellent Service Providers In addition to thanking our tireless staff, ministry members and congregants, we extend a vote of thanks to our group of trusted vendors/excellent service providers assembled primarily by the Church Manager. On an ongoing basis, Melvin monitors this competent, qualified, and cooperative group, who have earned our trust and allegiance, based on their value-for-money, and the quality of the services and solutions they provide.

Building Condition Assessment As previously reported, the engineering survey, now known as the Building Condition Assessment and the Reserve Fund Study, indicates that our facility will naturally require significant care and attention over time. To prepare for the major repairs indicated in the assessment and study, Trinity continues to be very fortunate to be able to not only have, but also build up, the newly established Major Repairs Fund. We are diligent in ensuring that all of the smaller, and often emergent or urgent repairs, that are made on an ongoing basis, have a lasting value to Trinity.

A ‘BCA’ Review Committee was struck to provide greater insight into the financial requirements going forward, and within an approximate 30-year window. This Committee is made up of members from the Operations Ministry as well as from the Finance & Stewardship Ministry.

Roof Replacement/Property Improvements – Narthex Sanctuary As evidenced by the leaking roof at the back of the sanctuary (narthex area/west side) it was concluded that a portion of the roof had reached the end of its service life and required immediate repair. We ensured that the repair upgraded the quality of materials in the roof so that it can withstand the harsh elements of Canadian weather and to increase its lifespan.

North Hall Study Given the realities of the pandemic, the North Hall study was postponed. Matters of appearance and use, heating, cooling, airflow, sound, audio and visual equipment and restrooms will hopefully be considered in the near future. The study is intended to help us improve the Hall for the benefit of Trinity, and for the benefit of existing and prospective tenants and space users.

Grounds Keeping Crew Exterior beautification of the property, especially the ‘Transformer Corner’, was undertaken enthusiastically and creatively by Trinity’s wonderful volunteer groundskeeping crew, with the ready and able leadership and support of Michael Gomiega.

Their excellent efforts enabled the congregation to continue to ‘speak so well’ to the community at large of who Trinity is and that we care for our neighbourhood and ourselves. Thank you to the whole Crew for all your time and effort– the property looked beautiful in every way.

Overall Plan The Operations Ministry holds fast to the overall plan, in line with the objectives of Session, to continue to enhance the facilities and grounds for our congregation, and our tenants and space users, as funds allow, in order to ensure successful daily operations and to further increase rental income for the benefit of Trinity and its programs. As people of hope, we trust that the huge pandemic set-back we continued to experience in 2021 will in time be put behind us and brighter days will dawn.

Thank You The Facilities and Grounds division of the Operations Ministry is pleased to report that 2737 Bayview Avenue is in excellent shape. Overall, it is a properly maintained, rightly functioning, clean, and well-run facility of which we can be very proud. We are so fortunate to have it entrusted to our care by all who went before us, even as we are always mindful of those to whom it will be entrusted in years yet to come. Thank you for caring about and for our Church Home. Thank you for being good stewards of our beautiful building and grounds.

Finance and Stewardship Ministry “Like good stewards of the manifold grace of God, serve one another with whatever gift each of you has received.”

1 Peter 4:10-11 On behalf of the Finance and Stewardship Ministry members: Mark Boucher, Robin Campbell, Beth Hemstad, Randal Phillips, Steve Roche, and Scott Worthington, we wish to thank our constituents for their continued financial support of Trinity. Despite the continued challenges of COVID-19, we have much to be thankful for. We have been able to meet in person on Sundays with limited capacity and can thank Kirk, Melvin, Michael, and so many volunteers for communicating with us virtually with Good Sunday Morning! and Trinity News. We are so blessed to have such talent among our congregation.

We are pleased to report that we finished 2021 in a strong financial position, meaning that we did not need to draw down any of the projected $80,000 from the Growth Fund to balance revenue against expenses. In short, with donations above anticipated at $288,805, greater than expected rental income of $129,594, additional government support of $48,433 and a good job of keeping expenses below budget accounted for the positive results. Please see the financial statements for details.

Early in the year, our staff discovered leaks in the ceiling of the narthex just above the main doors to the sanctuary in February. Facilities and Grounds Ministry members and Melvin sprang into action and got the repairs to the flat roof completed by May. We therefore decided to request that donations to the 68th Anniversary celebration envelope be earmarked for the roof repairs. We are pleased to report that $12,460 was raised towards the cost of just over $60,000. Fortunately, we had sufficient funds available in the Major Repairs Fund to cover the difference.

The congregation was again generous in supporting our Missions Ministry with contributions of $36,930, thanks to John Clarke and the members of the Missions Ministry. At the time of writing, we do not have a final tally on the Congregational Christmas Project. Please read the Missions Report for the details on the amounts we’ve given to other charities, for 2021. We were also fortunate to receive $30,000 in a bequest that was directed to the Bartlet and Growth Funds respectively, as requested by the donor.

In the fall, our Finance and Stewardship Ministry members reviewed the Macintosh Perry Building Assessment Condition Report that was prepared for our Operations Ministry, in July 2020. The major take-away for our group was the consideration that we may need to spend as much as $1.26 million, over the next 30 years, to cover non-discretionary major repairs on the church building. The appropriate amount that should be reserved on an annual basis will be discussed at a Finance and Stewardship meeting early in the new year and reported back to Session in April. In the meantime, Finance and Stewardship members recommended to Session that we increase the annual appropriation of net rental income of 5% ($6,480) in 2021 to 10% ($17,500) in our 2022 budget to be reserved for future major repairs.

During the COVID-19 lockdown, many donors converted to PAR or made donations using e-transfers or Tithe.ly.

We currently have 30 members who make their regular donations by PAR and about 25 members (varies each month) who make their donations by e-transfer.

Tax Receipts I am the authorized signatory for official tax receipts. A tax receipt is issued when the following conditions are met: • • •

Annual donations exceed $20.00.

The amount of the donation and the name of the donor are known.

The donor did not receive any benefit as a result of their donation.

For 2021, I will issue official tax receipts totalling $354K for donations through envelopes, e-transfers, Tithe.ly, and PAR. The trustees are governed by a formal Declaration of Trust under the direction of The Presbytery of East Toronto.

Notes to Financial Statements 1. Fund accounting - we keep financial records for ten separate funds that recognize their unique purposes and the wishes of donors. They are: a. Our General Fund for church operations. This is our most active fund, and most of our receipts and expenses flow through it. b. Four Session Funds that are managed by Session for the overall needs of our church. i. Growth Fund – established in 2011 as part of our planned giving program to support growth and other significant needs of Trinity for the longer term. This Fund receives bequests, gifts of shares, and other planned gifts, and keeps them separate from our normal operating activities until they are needed. The Fund is spent under supervision of Session. ii. Memorial Fund – established in 1981 to receive gifts in memory of a person’s passing or other memorable occasions. The fund is spent under supervision of Session to acquire items of enduring benefit to Trinity. iii. Major Repairs Fund – established in 2018 to accumulate funds to cover future major expenses such as roof replacements. It is funded by an allocation of rental income, along with designated donations from the congregation. It is not intended to be used for regular repairs and maintenance, nor for enhancements to our facilities and grounds. The Fund is spent under supervision of Session. iv. Trinity Tune-up Fund – established in 2017 as part of our Trinity Tune-up appeal to support our music program, sound systems and signs to help Trinity’s outreach. The funds are spent under supervision of Session for Tune-up items. c. Five Designated Funds that are managed for specific purposes by our Ministries or other groups. i. Missions Fund – established to receive donations that are designated to support Trinity’s mission activity in our community. In November each year, the Missions Ministry submits a budget for the following year to Session for approval. Subject to working within this budget, the Missions Ministry determines the food banks and other community organizations that will receive funds based on their needs. ii. Benevolent Fund – established to provide funds that are disbursed at the Minister's discretion to individuals or families in need. Offerings from our Christmas Eve services every year are dedicated exclusively to this Fund, and members also make designated donations to it throughout the year.

iii. Paul Bartlet Music Fund – established by Mr. & Mrs. James Bartlet in 1988, in memory of their son Paul, to enhance the music program at Trinity. Donations that are designated to support our music program are added to this Fund. The Fund is spent under supervision of our Worship Ministry. iv. Flower Fund – established to pay for floral arrangements placed in the sanctuary or decorations purchased appropriate to the seasons of the Christian calendar. It is funded through designated donations from the congregation. The Fund is spent under supervision of our Flower Committee. v. Women of Purpose Fund – established by our Women of Purpose group to support charitable activities in the community. It is funded by their donations and spent under supervision of the Women of Purpose group.

For the purpose of calculating our dollar base for assessments by our national church, we include all income that is received in our General Fund, and any income that is spent on Trinity activities from our other Funds.

2. Expenses Related to Rental Income – based on staff time and expenses involved in our rentals, part of our rental income is allocated to cover costs of supporting rental activity. For the purpose of calculating our dollar base for assessments by our national church, we use net rental income, and this will be reported in a separate schedule to the PCC. 3. Major Repairs Fund – this fund was established in 2018 by Session to build a fund over time to cover major repairs that will occur on a cyclical time schedule, like the roof and HVAC equipment. In accordance with a policy established by Session, 5% of rental income was allocated to the Major Repair Fund in 2021.

4. Investment in PCC Consolidated Fund – this investment fund is supervised by the Trustee Board of the PCC. The fund has assets under management exceeding $230 million and is professionally managed and invested in marketable securities. As of September 30th, the fund has earned an annualized rate of return of 9.5%, measured over a five-year period. Our financial statements reflect investment income and unrealized gains due to market appreciation reported by the PCC at the end of the third quarter each year. This is the most up-to-date information available when our statements are prepared. Investment income and market appreciation is allocated to our various funds in proportion to their holdings in the PCC Consolidated Fund at the end of the third quarter. In reporting income in our financial statements, we only include realized Investment Income. We do not include Market Appreciation in our income as this represents unrealized gains or losses due to fluctuations in the value of our investments.

5. Land, Buildings and Equipment: a. Land – the landsite was purchased in 1952 by the PCC through the Home Mission Board and granted to Trinity. It is recorded at a nominal value of $1 in our financial statements.

b. Buildings and Equipment – includes only the capital cost of the current sanctuary completed in 1992. Since then, all costs relating to property acquisitions have been regarded as a current year expense and not capitalized. The 1992 capital cost of $2,338,492 is being amortized at the rate of $58,462.30 annually over 40 years and will be fully amortized by 2031. The annual amortization is deducted from the General Fund.
