Side-opening (folding) knives: The side-opening switchblades have an opening mechanism that is almost similar to the regular folding knives with the blade pivoting from one side of the handle. Out-of the-front switchblades: In OTF switchblades, the blade comes out from the tip of the handle rather than the size. Although OTF and side-opening knives have a similar internal mechanism, the area where they differ is that an OTF switchblade is sharp on both the sides. Single action OTF: The working mechanism of the single action OTF switchblade does not allow the blade to retract on the press of a button. One needs to manually compress the spring to retract the blade. The switchblades have stronger springs and hence the blades open more vigorously than double action OTFs. Double action OTF: The blade in the double action OTF switchblade knives for sale expands when the button on the handle is pressed. Again pushing the button also retracts the blade. Upon pressing the button, spring tension occurs that moves the blade back to its position. These knives are safer to carry around as they are unlikely to open accidentally.

Fixed blade knives: In fixed blade knives the blades are attached to the handle and cannot get folded.

Spring assisted knives: These types of folding knife flips open with a little assistance from the user. They have a bar or spring inside that that puts tension on the blade so when the user opens the blade to about 30 degrees; it flips the rest of the way open. They often get open with a thumb stud or flipper.
