This summary was written by the reporters and editors who worked on this story.
Illinois joined 24 other states and the District of Columbia in suing the Trump administration over plans to stop funding the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program on Saturday as the federal government shutdown continues.
About 1.9 million people in Illinois, and about 42 million people across the country, depend on SNAP benefits, otherwise known as food stamps, each month. The state administers $350 million in SNAP benefits each month to lowincome or other qualifying individuals, according to the Illinois Department of Human Services. Forty-five percent of SNAP households include children, and 44% include a person with a disability.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced earlier this month that it will not have money to pay SNAP benefits in November if the government remains shut down on Nov. 1. The U.S. House is not scheduled to be in session this week, meaning SNAP funding is certain to run out at the end of the month.
The government shutdown began on Oct. 1.
The lawsuit argues the USDA does have money to continue paying benefits in November. It claims Congress has appropriated contingency funds for emergencies such as a government shutdown that USDA can tap into now to continue funding SNAP.
“At a time of increased costs for families, the Trump administration is making a deliberate, illegal and cruel decision to cut off access to food for nearly 2 million Illinoisans,” Attorney General Kwame Raoul said in a statement.

Gov. JB Pritzker said last week the state is looking at ways to help people affected by the program’s pause, but options are limited because the federal government pays all the benefits for the program.
President Donald Trump’s decision to continue paying certain groups of federal works while programs like SNAP have been stopped has angered many Democrats. The president said a mystery donor — later revealed to be Timothy Mellon, an heir to the influential Mellon family — is giving $130 million to pay the military during the shutdown.
It’s not clear when Congress will be back in session as the parties remain at odds over health care funding. The shutdown will become the longest in U.S. history if it extends beyond Nov. 4, breaking the record of another shutdown that began in 2018 during Trump’s first term.

Recently, we laid to rest a church member who loved to restore old, classic cars. He would find one, parked in the weeds of a farmyard, abandoned, rusting out. Most would only see a hopeless hunk of junk.
But this man would not. When he looked at that car, he saw two things: (1) its former glory and (2) its future glory. He decided its future glory would exceed its former glory. The restoration project would cost him a great deal. But he would look at that car and say, “This car is worth it!” He would tow it home, work his magic, and in the end – voila! A transformed classic that was even more stunning in its upgraded form than in its original form. Now he and others could enjoy his finished masterpiece.
This illustrates the gospel of Jesus Christ. God created our parents, Adam and Eve, dazzlingly perfect –like classic cars when they roll off the

In the world of investing, we’ve all heard the phrase, “Don’t put all your eggs in one basket.” It’s solid advice that emphasizes the importance of diversifying your investments. Unfortunately, some people misinterpret this wisdom to mean they should avoid consolidating their investment accounts and keep their money spread across multiple financial institutions, often working with several different financial advisors.
However, when financial professionals talk about diversification, they’re referring to diversifying your investment assets, not your accounts. There’s a big difference between the two, and confusing them could hurt your financial future.
Scattered accounts may affect costs, paperwork and advice. When your assets are spread among multiple financial institutions, you could face several drawbacks. First, you’re likely paying more in fees than necessary. Multiple providers often mean multiple account fees, transaction costs and mutual fund expenses that can add up quickly. Generally, the more assets you have with one financial provider, the more opportunities you have for reducing or eliminating these costs.
Managing scattered accounts also could create a paperwork nightmare. You’ll receive multiple monthly statements and numerous tax forms, making it much harder to see the big picture of your financial health. This complexity can lead to missed opportunities and poor decision-making.
Perhaps most important, working with multiple financial advisors may result in conflicting advice and duplicated investment strategies. Without a comprehensive view of your entire portfolio, each financial advisor may recommend investments that don’t work well together, potentially delaying your progress toward reaching financial goals.
There’s strength in consolidation. Consolidating your accounts with a single financial advisor offers numerous benefits. You’ll have opportunities to develop a closer, more comprehensive relationship with someone who understands your complete financial picture. This financial advisor can provide informed guidance and help eliminate the conflicting advice that
may come from working with multiple professionals.
Consolidation also makes it easier to implement a well-diversified portfolio that fits your level of risk tolerance. When all your investments are in one place, you can see exactly how your assets are allocated and make strategic adjustments as needed. It becomes simpler to gauge aggregate investment returns, assess your portfolio assets and rebalance when necessary.
For retirement planning, consolidation can be especially valuable. IRAs at different providers can be consolidated at any time without tax consequences when assets are transferred directly between providers. When you retire, your 401(k) can typically be rolled over into an IRA, streamlining your retirement income strategy.
True diversification still matters. While consolidating accounts makes sense, diversifying your actual investments remains crucial. A good financial advisor will help you carefully build a balanced mix of stocks and bonds appropriate for your age and goals. As you approach r etirement, this typically means shifting toward a more balanced portfolio that still provides growth to combat inflation while offering stability and income.
Diversification goes beyond just stocks and bonds. Take bonds, for instance: You can diversify by bond type (municipal, corporate and government), bond maturity (through a strategy called “laddering”) and bond sector to spread risk across different parts of the economy. How to get started. If your retirement savings and investment accounts are scattered among various financial institutions, consider consolidating everything with one trusted financial advisor. The streamlined recordkeeping, potential for reduced fees and comprehensive financial guidance can help improve your wealth-building potential while making your financial life simpler to manage.

assembly line. They, however, rebelled against God and ended up like broken down, rough-running, rusting castoffs, parked in the tall grass. All of us have inherited their rebellious, “my will be done” condition. We, too, are like classic cars, broken down and rusting, because of sin. Guilty sinners, slated for the junkyard.
But Jesus showed up, set his sights on a vast number of disintegrating cars, past, present, and future, (all who belong to him by faith), and said, “I want to restore these cars. Their future glory will be greater than their former glory. They are worth the cost.” He then paid for us on the cross, not with gold or silver, but with his precious blood. He bought us to restore us to stunning glory, to glorify and enjoy him forever.

Veterans Day on November 11th honors military veterans who served in the United States Armed Forces. The federal holiday coincides with Armistice Day and Remembrance Day, which marks World War I. These observances reflect the end of significant hostilities at the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918 when the Armistice with Germany took effect. Initially, the United States observed Armistice Day as well. However, it evolved into the current Veterans Day in 1954. Source: nationaldaycalendar.com

If your family wasn’t from Roseland, chances are you know someone whose family was from the south side Chicago neighborhood.
Dan Bovino has assembled an impressive array of photographs and memories of Roseland and the next stop on his busy speaking schedule will be in Homewood.
The Homewood Historical Society welcomes Bovino for its monthly program on Wednesday, Nov. 12 at the Homewood Public Library, 17917 S. Dixie Highway. Following the society’s brief business meeting at 6:00 p.m., Bovino will take his deep dive into Roseland’s history beginning at 6:30 p.m. Admission is free and light refreshments will be served.
Bovino, a resident of Lansing, has shared his “Nostalgic Roseland” presentation in many forums. The appeal of the topic is not surprising. Many residents of towns throughout the suburbs have a shared experience. Their parents or grandparents at one time lived, and likely worked, in Roseland but began moving to suburban Cook County and Northwest Indiana starting over a half-century ago. The reasons for the migration were economic, including the ripple effect of lost jobs caused by closed steel mills. Another factor was the unethical fear-mongering practices of some realtors, rapidly changing Roseland from a majority white to Black neighborhood.
Bovino has built a collection of several hundred vintage Roseland photographs and stories. He has a significant online presence about Roseland. Bovino is also president of the Lansing Historical Society.
The Homewood Historical Society is celebrating its 45th anniversary in 2025-26. The society operates the DorbandHowe House Museum at 2035 183rd St., Homewood. Museum hours are Saturdays, 1:00 – 3:00 p.m.
Patrick Zamkin, a local Edward Jones financial advisor, is supporting the Cook/Will County Toys for Tots program by using his office as a drop-off location for this year’s toy drive.
Local residents may help make a difference for children in the area by bringing in a new, unwrapped toy to the office, at 18735 Dixie Hwy in Homewood, during regular business hours beginning November 3rd through December 12th, 2925. Monetary gifts, including gift cards, cannot be accepted.
“Toys for Tots is an extraordinary program that can make a real difference for children in our community,” said Zamkin . “We’re proud to be a part of it again this holiday season.”
Online shoppers may have the items delivered to Edward Jones/Patrick Zamkin, 18735 Dixie Hwy, Homewood, IL 60430 through December 12th. Any contribution - no matter how big or small - is greatly appreciated.

Question: We just accepted an offer on our home where the buyer is getting FHA financing. Our agent said it’s no big deal, but we have heard horror stories. What can we expect?
Answer: FHA’s biggest repair concerns are health and safety issues, protecting the security of the property, and structural soundness of the property. Here are most of the items that will require repair BEFORE you can close an FHA loan: Peeling paint in homes built before 1978. Unpainted downspouts and broken rain gutters. Ground fault interrupters in the proper locations. Rotting outbuilding in need of demolition. Exterior doors that do not properly close and open. Exposed wiring and uncovered junction boxes. Major plumbing issues and leaks. Inoperable HVAC systems. Leaky or defective roofs. Roofs with a life expectancy of less than 3 years. Active and visible pest infestation. Rotting wood such as window sills, eaves, and support columns on a porch. Missing appliances that usually are sold with a home such as a stove. Bedrooms
